NEARLY $1 million of a state community safety and crime prevention grants program will be targeted in Casey. The State Government announced $700,000 in Youth Crime Prevention Grants over two years, as well as $250,000 to improve safety in Narre Warren Village. The youth crime prevention program will be devised with the help of a workshop with community leaders, Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said. Victoria Police and Casey Council are among the invitees to help devise local, evidence-based programs to break the spate of home invasions and serious crime by young offenders. The grant was targeted in eight “priority” municipalities, including Greater Dandenong and Casey. It comes on top of a concerted series of law-and-order announcements from the State Government in recent days, including 2729 extra police in the next four years.

A universal struggle By Victoria Stone-Meadows A HAMPTON Park woman has been crowned Ms Universal, but is facing an uphill battle to muster support for her charity work because beauty pageants in Australia are not taken seriously. Nathalie Nicole travelled to the United States in July where she competed in the Ms Universal pageant - one of the few beauty pageants for divorced women and/ or single mothers. Ms Nicole had never competed in a beauty pageant before she became Ms Australia Universal because they weren't usually open to divorced women or single mothers, and was surprised to place highly in the contest. Ms Nicole was first runner-up at the pageant, but as the winner from Russia soon had her title stripped for not meeting her obligations, Ms Nicole was crowned Ms Universal, by default. She was awarded first runner-up with a very small margin between her and the original winner though she was awarded best interview, Miss Congeniality and best charity platform. A survivor of abuse, violence, and suicide attempts, Ms Nicole’s charity work sees her working with other women who may be survivors of or currently in similar situations surrounding family violence. “I spend my time speaking to women who have survived this as well because I want to be a role model and someone to look up to and someone who understands,” she said. “That’s been my whole tag line; not a victim but a survivor.” However, in attempting to continue her charitable work and create a network for women who are survivors of abuse, she has found the negative take on beauty pageants in Australia has been a hindrance. “Beauty pageants are not well known in Australia, and where they are known, they
don’t have a great reputation,” she said. “I have contacted councils and community organisations to speak at events, but people assume the lifestyle is all about beautiful dresses and heels and assume I’m stupid.” “More and more I’m finding an uphill battle against the reputation of being a beauty queen, but I am community focused and want to work with women who have been through a hard time who don’t have a support network.” Ms Nicole said she would like to see more opportunities extended to women who didn't fit traditional female societal roles, both in the beauty pageant world and everyday life. “There are not many pageants that allow single mums or divorced women or women over 26, and there are not many opportunities for us overall,” she said. “We are an untapped market and want to have the same opportunities as other women. Ms Nicole said through her time at the Ms Universal pageant she had met amazing women who weren't afforded the benefit of the doubt as other women received. “I have met really intelligent women with histories like myself who are looked down upon because they are single mums,” she said. “I am a single mum and people assume I’m needy or don’t have anything to offer, and it is a constant battle of stigmas I have accrued through my life experiences.” Ms Nicole wants to use her position to fight the stigmas surrounding women who take on non-traditional roles within society. “I know a lot of other single mums that can’t get dates or don’t get hired for jobs because people assume we need to take time off to look after our kids and so on. “What a lot of people don’t realise is we have thought about all that before, and we are more than capable of managing the same as anyone else.”

CASEY Criminal Investigation Unit Detectives executed a warrant on a property on Rosebank Drive in Cranbourne North last week, and found drug lab equipment in place. Police raided the property on Wednesday 16 November and found glassware, recipes, and nearly $8000 worth of prescription tablets as well as other unidentified chemicals. A 33-year-old Cranbourne man was taken into custody and charged with possession of articles to manufacture a drug of dependence. Police also located a Kia Rio in the garage of the property that had been reported stolen from Dandenong in July and used in a number of burglaries in the northern suburb of Roxburgh Park. He was also found to be in possession of illegal ammunition and other drugs such as MDMA, speed, and ice. Known to police from past criminal activity involving drugs, the man has been remanded in custody, and is facing more than 35 separate charges. He will face the Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 7 December for a bail application hearing.

More cops, tougher laws By Victoria Stone-Meadows MORE police recruits and tougher laws have been announced by the State Government to target youth crime, despite crime committed by offenders less than 18 years of age declining in frequency. On Monday 5 December, Premier Daniel Andrews announced a number of new criminal justice directions to curb youth offending, which is considered particularly high in the south-east area. These new laws and penalties include an increase to the maximum period of detention that can be imposed by the Children’s Court, a new offence for adults who lure young people to commit crimes for them, a new Youth Control Order (YCO) to give the Children’s Court the power to issue a more
intensive and targeted supervision sentence for young offenders, and many more. The announcement of the new youth crime targeting systems comes on the back of the government plans to recruit 2729 new police cadets over the next four years. At the announcement on 4 December Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton specifically noted that police numbers had been stretched in the south east suburbs due to youth crime. “Young people feel shut out of society, they are feeling frustrated and getting into crime and forming the groups and gangs out there committing crimes,” he said. “Young people are feeling disconnected and we need to work in that issue by providing accountable law
enforcement, and work on prevention and turn these young people around.” “Victoria Police has to focus on that and this announcement allows us to maintain a commitment to that.” Police Minister Lisa Neville specifically flagged growth corridors in the state as areas needing more police and youth workers to tackle youth crime. The government has also announced $10 million worth of Youth Crime Prevention grants to specifically target and prevent youth offending. “We will be funding 42 police youth recourse works across the state to work with youth at both ends; working with youth offenders and working on prevention,” she said. “Youth offending overall is down but we have this group offending at extraordinary rates and committing
crimes and none of the traditional interventions have worked.” “We are and have been talking to police and other youth workers about what we need to do to turn this around because they are causing too much harm, it is unacceptable and will not continue.” However, while youth offending has remained steady across the state in the period from July 2015 to June 2016 with a one per cent increase in the number of offenders aged 10 to 17, in Casey, that statistic has fallen. According to the Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria, total crime incidents committed by people aged 10 to 17 years in the City of Casey have dropped. In the period from July 2015 to June 2016, the incidents of youth crime in
Casey has fallen 15.5 percent across all but one crime categories compared to the same period in 2014 to 2015. The only crime category where youth offending has increased in Casey is Justice Procedures offences such as breaches of court orders. At a council meeting on Tuesday 6 December, Casey Mayor Sam Aziz proposed the council contact the Victoria Police Command to request an allocation of new officers to the area. Mayor Sam Aziz said he was happy that the State Government had “finally come to the party“ after the council had lobbied under a five-plank community safety plan - including extra police. The next wave of frontline police officers is expected to hit the streets of Casey in April next year.
Children’s safety at risk - a sign of the times By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE debate surrounding flashing 40km/h signs on the Baxter-Tooradin Road near Pearcedale Primary School has heated up, with the Shadow Education Minister lending his voice to the cause. Shadow Minister for Education Nick Wakeling and MP for Hastings Neale Burgess met with parents of students from the school to call on the State Government to install the flashing signs. The school community, with the support of Mr Burgess, has requested a number of times for the State Government to install the variable speed limit signs at the school. On his last visit to the school, Mr Burgess was presented with a 500-signature petition from parents requesting the signs be installed. On Friday 2 December, Mr Burgess and Mr Wakeling visited the school to further lend their support to the campaign for the signs. “The Pearcedale Primary School is directly opposite the Pearcedale Shopping Centre, and the two facilities are separated by the very busy BaxterTooradin Road,” Mr Burgess said. “The installation of flashing electronic signs will help ensure motorists are aware of the presence of school children and that the speed limit is 40 km/h.” Mr Wakeling also called on the State Government to find the installation of the signs, citing safety along the BaxterTooradin Road as a major concern. “The Andrews Labor Government has rejected repeated requests by local schools to install flashing variable speed limit signs,” he said. “This initiative will save lives, and should not be ignored by Daniel Andrews. We need to make schools the safest place possible for students and teachers.” Mr Burgess also claimed the State Government has stopped funding the installation of the flashing 40km/h signs.

“However, we will continue to monitor Baxter-Tooradin Road and work with their community around any future improvements.” Mr Donnellan’s office also pointed out the Baxter-Tooradin Road carries about 8000 vehicles a day, and there have been no pedestrian-related crashes between Middle Road and Pearcedale Road in the latest five-year period, ending 31 December 2015. Case(y) on China trade By Cam Lucadou-Wells GENERATIONS to come will be thankful for Casey’s planned trade mission to China at the cost of up to $25,000, says Casey mayor Sam Aziz. Cr Aziz was keen to dispel talk at a council meeting on 6 December that the delegation to Chengdu in southwest China in early 2017 was a “junket”. “Casey is by no means alone to pursue economic investment in China. “This is not an unusual step to make - to spend a very small amount of money to deliver very significant investment returns,” he said. According to a council report, Chengdu has a high level of Australian representation and was seeking international co-operation to break its geographic isolation.
Its districts include hubs of research, universities, car manufacture, agriculture, solar and tourism. Cr Aziz argued that the mission was a necessary, strategic step for Casey’s economic and jobs development. Fast-growing Casey would be a likely target for a “formidable” number of wealthy Chinese looking to invest abroad. Cr Aziz said Casey’s previous mission to China in 2013 was not a holiday, but full of meetings and flights to five cities in four days. For example, there was no time for him to even get a glimpse of The Great Wall of China in Beijing during the hectic schedule. For the cost of up to $6000, the trip led to three Casey companies landed more than $22 million in property deals with Chinese counterparts, lead-
ing to local jobs, Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz said the council didn’t need to offer incentives, such as rates relief, to investors. “We think the investment story alone is an attractive story.” The trip was approved by a majority of councillors, but not without some debate. Cr Rosalie Crestani, though supporting the trip, expressed a reservation that no land in Casey should be sold overseas as a result. The mayor said that the sale of land was outside Casey’s control. Dissenting councillor Steve Beardon said the arguments stacked up, but trade missions shouldn’t be the province of local governments, especially given Victoria and Australia’s vast representation in China.
“I think it’s way out of our neck of the woods.” Cr Beardon was also concerned about China’s impact on local manufacturers and its human rights record. Cr Aziz replied that Casey’s planned advanced manufacturing hub - its own ‘Silicon Valley’ in Berwick - would not be in direct competition with Chinese-made products. He said Victoria’s trade advocacy on its own would not necessarily direct investment into Casey. Human rights issues were the theme of Federal Government diplomacy. “I’m very comfortable about this,” Cr Aziz said. “The returns on investment will be so significant that generations to come will thank us for making that investment.”
Councillors Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson, who like Cr Beardon were recently elected on minimising financial waste, also dissented until there was more detail on the financial benefits. The delegation of Cr Aziz, councillor Wayne Smith and two council officers is expected to be joined by representatives from two Casey businesses that already trade in China. The business people, who will join the trip at their own expense, were past winners of Casey-Cardinia business of the year awards, but not named by Cr Aziz. Cr Smith said he would contribute to making partnerships in the arts and student exchanges. He cited the opportunity to help facilitate Cranbourne Chorale’s upcoming trip to China. Cardinia Council will be invited to join the delegation.

Jake thanked all the people who had supported his cause along the way by donating to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and keeping him supported through his journey. He thanked his partner Jess for organising the accommodation along the way, his family members for visiting his during his journey, Jess’s father for the donations and fund-raising and other community businesses and organisations that helped him raise money. There was one person in particular Jake felt deserved a special mention and that was his mate and support car driver Luke ‘Twiggy’ Balcombe. “I have got to thank Twiggy,” Jake said. “I’m forever grateful for what Twiggy has done and we called him the silent partner because he doesn’t like being noticed.
“Without him it couldn’t have been done, he kept me safe on the road and kept me from magpies and snakes, he would get out of the car and launch rocks, he was amazing. "I was frustrating him the whole time but the guy just kept going and he never gave up on me. “He was even more than happy to drink beers along the way for me when I couldn’t - that’s a real great friend and I cannot speak more highly of him.” Jess said she was so proud of her partner and was feeling so many emotions after his arrival home and the surprise proposal. “I’m feeling amazing for more than one reason,” she said. “I wouldn’t never have guessed in a million years he would do that; I thought that today is his day and should have been all about him at the finish line but trust Jake, modest Jake. “I’m so proud of him I have been crying for last hour for a mixture of emotions. I missed him more than I knew possible.” Jake’s mum Christine Ward said she knew her son would make it to the finish line of his epic journey no matter what. “I know what’s he’s like, he would crawl if he had to,” she said. “I’ve been so worried about him and he is such a great guy and does everything for others.” Over the course of his run from Queensland to Victoria, Jake raised $47,500 for breast cancer research.

The Parks Changing Australia exhibition will be on display in the Circa Corridor of the National Museum of Australia, Canberra, until April 2017.
It’s been a busy 12 months building up Bunjil Place and we’re topping off a big year of construction with works well underway on the iconic winged roof! IT IS concerning that less than a few months into the new term, the new council is considering applying for a variance to the rate cap after being rejected the first time. When was the community consultation to further spend thousands of ratepayer dollars to apply for this variation? It may only be a ’marginal variation’ to the yearly rates but has the council considered the pensioners and young families who might still struggle with the increase? The residents of the Berwick Springs estate are dealing with the aftermath of there being no community consultation to the reconstruction of their entrance, it would be a shame for the council to continue on with its theme of a lack of accountability and transparency so early into its term. AFTER returning home from his 1500 kilometre fundraising run, Jake Ward proposed to his girlfriend Jess Brown in front of family and friends but admitted he was nervous about popping the question. “I’m glad she said yes, it’s been nervewracking for so long because I didn’t think there was going to be this many people but imagine if she said no,” he said. “I’ve been planning to propose since our first date and always thought I would propose at the finish line but it was always a matter of finding the time.” After running for 30 days straight on his epic journey, Jake had let his beard grow and Jess said she could hardly recognise him. “He has changed with his beard growing out, that was very different in real life and I kept wondering if it was him under there,” she said. Jake, however, said he wasn’t a fan of the beard and he wouldn’t be holding onto it for very long. “The beard will stick around until tomorrow,” he said when he finally got a chance to sit down at home. “I can’t wait to get rid of it, especially since I realised I’ve got grey hairs. It’s gone.” A DANDENONG man has claimed he was drink-driving to escape racist abuse during a night out in Geelong. The man, who blew 0.167 and had never held a driving licence, claimed his passenger
was more drunk than him and unable to drive, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. After pulling the man’s car over, police observed the accused climbing out of the drivers’ seat into the back of the vehicle - however the passenger stayed in their seat. The man had been disqualified from driving after a high-reading drink-driving conviction in 2015. The judge noted the man’s excuses would be no comfort if he had killed someone while driving while he was so drunk. The man was put on a six-month community corrections order including 50 hours of unpaid work and alcohol counselling, as well as a road trauma awareness program. He was disqualified from driving for 32 months. A WOMAN has failed in her bid for a personal safety order against a Victoria Police officer who had evicted her from her home under a Sheriff’s warrant. The woman argued at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that she had never seen the warrant and was now unable to get in her house due to police changing the locks without her permission. In seeking to institute proceedings against the arresting officer, she accused him of acting out a “home invasion”. The magistrate noted a trust - of which the woman was a beneficiary - was the home’s true owner.
“In my view your application is vexatious, without substance, made in bad faith, without reasonable prospects of success and, on the face of it, an abuse of process.” A MAN has been freed from jail after languishing there for five and a half months for defaulting on tollway fine payments. The man was arrested by Sheriff’s officers and jailed when he got behind on his $1000-a-month payment plan, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. His lawyer said it was a concerning case, given the man had sat in jail for 155 days without appearing in court. “I don’t know how he went through (such a long time in jail) without getting any legal advice,” his lawyer said. “I believe there have been legislative changes so the Sheriffs now bring them out to a court first.” The judge expressed surprise the man spent so long in jail on “these type of matters”. He discharged the man from two-thirds of more than $60,000 owed to tollway companies. The man was also fully cleared of more than $30,000 in fines owed to Civic Compliance Victoria. “If there’s a (financial) crisis again you can always approach the court and vary the amount you can pay (on the payment plan),” the judge told him.

TWENTY-SIX of the 29 dogs that were seized from a property in Blind Bight on Tuesday 26 July have found new homes or are in loving foster families. The dogs were seized from the property after an animal rights group Oscar’s Law exposed the conditions the dogs were kept in. City of Casey Council prosecuted the owner of the property, Troy Scoble, for keeping excess animals on his property in June this year. Twenty-nine of the 33 dogs were removed from the property under the Domestic Animals Act in July, and since then almost all the dogs have found new loving homes. Sadly, two of the dogs removed from the property had to be euthanised due to extreme behavioural issues and one has been sent to NSW for behavioural rehabilitation. Anna Balakas from Team Tigger Inc. was one of the people who were instrumental in finding new homes for the dogs by liaising with other animal support groups and rescue shelters. “One of the dogs from Blind Bight was one of our own called Bruce,” Ms Balakas said. “We fought hard to get him back when we found out he was on that property.” Ms Balakas said Team Tigger Inc. were recommended to house Bruce at the Blind Bight property through another agency. “He was the first dog released from Blind Bight, and we sought legal advice and had every intention to get him back as soon as we
A CRANBOURNE man faces charges over more than 200 offences after a crime spree throughout the southeast suburbs of Melbourne. The 24-year-old man clocked up the extraordinary number of criminal offences in just a few months. He is facing charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that range from burglary, and traffic offences to drug related and reckless conduct charges. The accused was a person of interest across three different police service areas for roughly four months and has been implicated in over 80 burglaries or attempted burglaries. He has been charged by a number of police officers in the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Frankston police service areas. He was arrested and taken into police custody after detectives from the Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit executed a warrant on an address in Stawell Street in Cranbourne on the morning of Wednesday 9 November. Arresting Detective Senior Constable Christine Johnstone said the accused was found with many items, believed to be proceeds of crime, but would not give details of what those items were. “A search warrant was executed at this address and a large number of items were seized,” she said. A 39-year-old female and a 36-year-old male were also arrested at the property as a result of the search warrant. Detective Senior Constable Brad Coller from Casey Crime Investigation Unit has pinned the accused with 90 charges across several suburbs including Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham. He said he hoped justice would be done quickly but the sheer volume of charges meant the case might be in court for a while. “I’m hoping but I doubt it will be dealt with swiftly,” he said. However, Det Sen Const Coller said the police officers across Frankston, Casey and Greater Dandenong were confident their charges would stick. “(His) defence may not agree with a majority of the charges, but we’ve got a strong case on all our accounts and that is why we charged him.” He first appeared at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 30 November but his matter was adjourned, and he has been remanded in custody until Tuesday 20 December.

dition; a lot of the dogs had skin allergies, stuffed paws from the hard surface, and some had mast cell tumour cancer.” City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said he was proud of the way council officers and employees had helped to resolve the animal welfare issues surrounding this case. “This was one of the largest animal welfare cases council has been involved in, and the first time we were actively involved in coordinating dogs into new homes, rescue or foster care,” he said. “Council is not only committed
to delivering for our residents, but we’re also dedicated to ensuring our four-legged friends are cared for and safe.” Ms Balakas said the change she had seen in the dogs she had helped re-home after coming from the Blind Bight property had been extraordinary. “It’s really good to see the dogs becoming normal dogs again,” she said. “We are going to give it a good go and make sure they have a good future; we won’t walk away from these dogs.”

Sweet street By Victoria Stone-Meadows UPGRADES to Sladen Street in Cranbourne have officially been completed, with MP for Cranbourne Jude Perera visiting the new-look street on Monday 05 December. The works were undertaken to end the bottlenecks that have been a feature of Sladen Street between Codrington and Cameron streets. The $10.1 million improvement works have seen the building of two lanes either side of a new median strip, new bicycle
lanes, as well as new footpaths and pedestrian crossings. As part of the upgrades, street lighting was improved along the stretch of road and landscaping and drainage works were also included. Existing bus stops at Cameron and Codrington streets have been relocated and aligned with the new pedestrian crossing and traffic lights. The widening and restructure of the road started in November 2015 and have taken just over 12 months to complete.
Mr Perera said the improvements to Sladen Street would mean members of Casey’s booming population would spend less time stuck in traffic. “Cyclists and pedestrians will benefit through upgraded pedestrian ramps on Codrington Street and new cycling lanes. “Cranbourne is one Victoria’s fastest growing areas and that’s why we widened Sladen Street and improved facilities for pedestrian and cyclists,” he said.

OUSTED Casey City councillor Gary Rowe has launched legal proceedings against the Victorian Electoral Commission following his loss in the recent elections. Mr Rowe claims he lost his seat representing Mayfield ward to Steve Beardon by less than 100 votes but was denied a recount. “When I went out, the difference between myself and next person was 96 votes, a very small margin,” he said. “I requested a recount on the grounds I had heard anecdotally there were inconsistencies in which manner in which the returning office handled ballot papers at the Berwick counting office.” Mr Rowe also says he received statutory declarations from vote counters that there were failures at the Berwick counting office to properly handle votes that may have been informal. However, Mr Rowe says when he requested a recount of the votes before the declaration of the polls he was told the VEC would not grant him one. Mr Rowe said his legal action is not about winning or losing the election but about the due process of vote counting. “I have nothing against the City of Casey, my complaint is with the VEC and the VEC’s process and failure to listen,” he said. “It’s a process issue.” The man declared the winner of the seat in Mayfield, Steve Beardon, has hit back at Mr Rowe’s legal action. “Gary Rowe you are wasting your time,” Cr Beardon said. “We took on the might of the Liberal Party, the might of all their money, billboards, direct mailouts, their army of volunteers, and beat off everything that Rowe, Stapledon and their Lib-

Little angels are heavenly THE children of Rangebank Pre-School have been rehearsing for their upcoming Christmas nativity play, The 10 Little Angels and the Drummer. Playing Mary and Joseph, the Three Wise Men, 10 angels, a drummer, shepherds and a variety of animals ranging from cows to chickens, the kids have all been very busy practising their parts. The children have learned various Christmas and other action songs to entertain their families and friends at their end-of-year Christmas concert.
All their hard work and dedication will pay off on Thursday 8 December as parents, families and friends will see the play in full costume. The night will also consist of the children receiving their certificates for completing four-year-old pre-school, a big step in their school journey. TIS the season to be jolly and Alkira Secondary College is spreading Christmas joy with the creation of hampers to be distributed through the Salvation Army to less fortunate families. Organised by the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC), the hampers consist of generous pupil and teacher donations including an array of food and gifts. Held annually in December, the Alkira Secondary College community has always been beneficent with hampers often overflowing. However, this year SRC member Cael proposed a festive clothes day where students were encouraged to dress festively on the proviso that they donated to the hampers. This initiative significantly increased donations with hampers so abundantly full that in addition to the wrapped and prepared gift baskets, the school will donate supplementary items separately. “These hampers are a fantastic way for students to get involved in community service,� said teacher Nicole Bruerton. Students are actively involved in making these hampers and soliciting donations. SRC member Bailey, who has been involved with creating the hampers for the last two years, said he looked forward to wrapping the hampers and described it as a highlight of his year.

Students deck their school halls STUDENTS at Tooradin Primary School have bought Christmas cheer to their school in style by decking their classroom with holiday happiness. The year 5N students under teacher Sarah Nolan have embraced the Christmas experience by decorating their classroom and joining in Christmas lessons. The students have hung tinsel, set up trees of all different sizes, and even had a life sized Santa Claus sitting in on classes with them. Ms Nolan said the Christmas spirit in her classroom has made her students excited to come to school again. “I promised them all year I would be bringing my Christmas decoration in and the children have made some decorations
for the classroom as well,” she said. “They have mini Christmas trees for their tables, they’ve made paper chains and so much more.” Ms Nolan also said the themed room has a deeper message than just decorating the room for the holidays. “The message we try and put forward here is that Christmas is about giving and thinking of others,” she said. “We have discussed celebrations across the world and talked about what it means for the children to enjoy the holiday season.” Star photographer Stewart Chambers visited Tooradin Primary School to photograph the Christmas room and found some very happy little elves.

Such is the bold menu that confronts diners at Samadi’z in Noble Park with traditional Afghan kebabs served with chips and green salad. Or pits diametrically-opposed options such as mantu dumplings or bruchetta. Interestingly, Assma Samadi says it’s the traditional food cooked by her father - known simply as ‘Mr Samadi’ - which is getting the most takers. She says a lot of diners from the non-Afghan community are giving Mr Samadi’s offerings a go because it’s served in such a Western manner. For 20 years, Mr Samadi has gathered a lofty reputation, catering for weddings and celebrations of up to 1000 people. The recently-opened cafe-restaurant is the first time he shares with the masses his exquisite skills

Stitch up a course THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church has commenced three new community programs. Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group, and affordable cooking. Stitch and Chat is a weekly practical workshop for sewing crafts - knitting, embroidery, quilting, crochet - led by a guest facilitator. The disadvantaged toddlers’ group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities. It is particularly aimed at children suffering from conditions that require 24-hour supervision. The affordable healthy cooking class teaches participants to prepare healthy home cooked meals. By Russell Bennett THE Lang Lang faithful will stop at nothing to watch their proud football club roar again. The Tigers are entering into an exciting new era under new senior coach and returning favourite son Clint Evans, new president Norm Lansdown, and a host of new coaches at Under 16, Under 18, and reserves level. Brad ‘Pumper’ Palmer has returned as the Tigers’ Under 18s coach and he’s being assisted by two senior players Sam Kendell and Ben Boulton. The Under 16s, meanwhile, will be under the tutelage of co-coaches Mark Anderson and Tim Elmes. The structure is in place, now all Lang Lang needs is junior players ready to step up to the plate and join the Tiger army. Pre-season training is already underway for the senior sides and the club is urging young players of all levels of experience - from 15 to 18-yearsold - to come down and one of the junior teams. The Tigers’ junior coaches are also attending senior pre-season training and are encouraging any junior play-
ers to come along and join them for the chance to improve their fitness and skillset heading into the new season. At this stage training times at the Lang Lang Showgrounds are Monday and Wednesday nights from 6pm to 7pm. “Our main priority is to get a group of kids, and to work with them,” Palmer said. The Tigers are buoyed by the prospect of their new facility coming online in the not-too-distant future, and have a clear direction from the president down to their youngest players. “If you’re not prepared to put in the hard work as a club, you’re going to get nowhere,” Lansdown said. “All you can do is give it your best shot. “We all love the game of footy and we love seeing the young blokes coming through, and they’re what you need to survive. “This is my first year in the job I only came down here a year-and-ahalf ago from Rosebud - but I love the place. “It’s got a terrific bunch of people, so I’ll be putting everything I can into it and everyone else will be to.” All of the Tigers’ junior coaches are

After the Hawks ground out 8/176 last week, another tough day of batting ensued, as the Cobras lost 5/39 early in the day, courtesy of some stunning pace bowling by the Hawks. But more wickets tumbled, as the Cobras fell to 9/108, before Lee Brown (29) hit three sixes to almost steal away a stunning victory, finishing on 153 before skipper Steven Gilmour (3/49) rattled the stumps of Chadwick Van Estrop (13). A total of 565 runs were blasted over two days at Park Oval, with Buckley Ridges holding off a persistent Parkfield side at home.
With the Bucks seemingly in the clear after a stunning 9/338 batting effort last week, the Bears battled hard with the blade. All but one batsman, who was the last name on the batting card, managed to make double-digit scores, but worryingly no batsman was able to cash in and make a century. Manisha Daberera (41), Hasindu Waduge (56) and Matthew Aslett (47) were strong contributors in the middle-order. For the Bucks, Susantha Pradeep (5/44) stunned the Bears, after having not taken a wicket in the season so far. Whether it’s more of a case of Cranbourne’s dominance or Narre Warren’s woes is an interesting discussion point after the Eagles brutal effort on Saturday at Casey Fields. After claiming first-innings points last week, the
Eagles continued on their merry way, and had the Magpies teetering in embarrassment at 8/45 early on. But a little surging partnership between Shane Simpson (38) and Mitchell Shirt (50) lifted the Magpies up to 148. Within 24.5 overs, the Eagles chased down the 141 runs required for outright victory, as Matthew Chasemore (49no) and Steven Spoljaric (34) once again tormented the opposition. From 3/4 to a stunning win, North Dandenong sure had every reason to smile on Saturday. After Mordialloc tore the Maroons apart on day one, the visitors resumed play with just seven wickets and 215-runs in arrears. But a stunning century from young gun Caleb Millman (112), playing his first game of Turf 1 for the season, turned the screws on the hungry Bloodhounds bowlers, as the Maroons reached the target with two wickets still left in the shed. TURF 2 Beaconsfield has lost outright on day two of their clash with Narre South at Perc Allison Oval. Following last week’s disappointing performance, the Tigers fell for 87 in their second innings, as Scott Phillips (6/37 and 6/28) once again proved to be a nightmare for the batsmen. South then chased down 51 runs with very little fuss to claim a crucial victory.

Overthrows clinch result By Nick Creely PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUNDS 10 and 11 (T20s) TWO runs, one ball, and a memorable victory - the equation may sound simple enough, but no one biting their nails in the final moments at Casey Fields on Saturday could have imagined a finish so thrilling. After six straight losses, the Swans hosted a highly-touted St Kilda lineup, featuring state representatives Michael Beer, Rob Quiney and James Muirhead. Swans skipper Lachlan Sperling sent the Saints in to bat, and after removing the dangerous Rob Quiney (22), the Swans had their tails up, as Nathan Lambden (2/25), Leigh Diston (1/30), Jackson Fry (1/21) and Dylan Hadfield (2/25) took control, restricting the Saints to just 6/134. With the blade in hand, the Swans started with intent, as Luke Manders (50) and Devin Pollock (34) put on 77 for the first wicket, all inside the first half of the innings. It seemed that the total wasn’t too hard of an ask. It all came down to the final over, and with ten runs to win, the Swans simply had to take some risks. But tight bowling from Saints seamer Jak Jowett (2/24) saw the game go down to the very last ball. As Jowett steamed in and delivered the ball, Dylan Hadfield poked the delivery to Rob Quiney in the ring, who assessed the situation, before firing the ball at the stumps. But for some unknown reason, no fielder was backing up, and the ball trickled past the stumps, through an
unaware fielder’s legs, straight to the boundary for four overthrows. With Quiney in utter disbelief, the Swans players streamed onto the field, hugging and shouting as the excitement took over. Developing quick Jackson Fry said it was an amazing feeling, and has given the group some much needed joy in a tough month for the club, but concedes that they really shouldn’t have walked away with the points. “It was just great to get the win and it was a great run chase - to get the win against a side that we haven’t beaten for 20 years, as South Melbourne was great,” he said. “I believe he (Quiney) could have walked the ball to the stumps - Dylan was long gone, at least half a pitch out, so it would have been a tie - he didn’t hit luckily for us. “We were a bit relieved; we obviously had lost six in a row, so it was more relief then anything to be honest. “We were pumped to win that game against a highly quality opposition.” The Swans followed on their stunning effort with another victory against Footscray Edgewater at Mervyn Hughes Oval the following day. After restricting the Dogs to just 8/121, the Swans started disastrously with the bat, sitting at 5/54. Enter the self-proclaimed “finisher” Dylan Hadfield, who played a matchwinning knock, smashing two sixes on his way to 48 not-out off just 23 balls. The Swans surpassed the Dogs with one over left in the game, capping off a memorable weekend for the club. Fry said that the fielding was a key factor in the victory, but lauded Had-

be the go to man with either bat or ball. The nickname came about after a couple of games last year - Nath Lambden started it as a bit of a laugh but it seems to have stuck, and the boys don’t mind stitching me up with it,” he said. “But when the game is on the line I want to be the bloke the team can turn to, to play the innings to give us the ascendancy in the game or take the important wicket or get that run out that can change the course of the match. “I enjoy the challenge of performing during the important moments in matches when the game is evenly poised and trying to get the win for the team. “Winning games of cricket is what we are here for and hopefully we can have a strong finish to the season."

HE has been proclaimed ‘The Finisher’ for at least twelve months now, but Casey-South Melbourne’s Dylan Hadfield can finally lay claim to the tag, after a stunning performance in Sunday’s Twenty20 win against Footscray. The rising all-rounder, who also hit the winning runs in the heart-stopping win the previous day against St Kilda, was named Round 11 Premier Cricket’s player of the round on Sunday, after smacking 48 not-out off just 23 balls, to guide the Swans home after a disastrous start. Coming in to bat at 5/54, chasing the Dogs total of 121, Hadfield rose to the occasion, spanking two sixes and five boundaries in the whirlwind knock. “Walking out to bat on Sunday against Footscray with the score at 5/50 we needed 9 or 10 an over, so I was looking for one or two boundaries an over,” Hadfield explained. “Having watched the beginning of our innings I had an idea of which bowlers I was aiming to target and I had to take some calculated risks and thankfully they paid off. “It was a fantastic weekend of cricket for us, getting a couple of wins on the board against some quality opposition." Earlier in the match, Hadfield also bowled a disciplined spell of bowling, going at just five runs per over, claiming a direct hit run-out and getting a vital wicket.

Dogs go to the carnival! THE Warragul and Cranbourne tracks will form the heart of an exciting new series launched last week by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV). Four regional clubs will make history with the new carnival, which is set to take Gippsland by storm. In an Australian regional first, the Gippsland Carnival will incorporate and connect four country cups - Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon - with more than $800,000 prizemoney across the series. Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy, who was born and bred in Warragul, is the ambassador for the carnival and helped launch it in Seaspray last Thursday. A sprint and distance series has been created to link all four legs with a Gippsland Champion Sprinter, and Gippsland Champion Stayer, crowned at the end of the carnival. The Sale Cup will kick off the excitement with its traditional race meeting on Boxing Day, while Traralgon will wrap it up with a grand finale in March. The middle legs will be the Warragul Cup on 28 January and the Cranbourne
Cup on 9 February. GRV chief executive officer Alan Clayton said he was excited to continue supporting clubs, their fans and their communities. “The economic benefits of greyhound racing to the Gippsland economy is around $40 million and the sport will become even more prominent in the area as greyhound racing comes to the forefront this summer,” Mr Clayton said. “We are pleased to be able to give back to local communities and work with the Latrobe, Wellington, Baw Baw and Casey councils to support local business and increase visitation. “The greyhound racing industry makes a substantial contribution of more than $300 million to the Victorian economy annually - both as a recreational pursuit and as an industry that employs more than 3000 people and generates $1.8 billion in wagering.” Mr Clayton said the carnival was a huge boost for greyhound racing and for the people of Gippsland. “This promises to be a series of colourful greyhounds, colourful characters and colourful fun,” he said.

Bosky led the way to a 16 shot win on his rink which went a long way to set up the continued successful combination of Peter Elgar and skip Barry Thomas. However, the rinks of Doug Boggie and Fritz Helle had a day that they would prefer to forget as they were badly defeated giving Clayton victory in the end by 34 shots in Division 2. HUGE centuries to an Emerald allrounder and Gembrook’s marquee player were the highlights of the opening round of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup. Heinz Southern Districts allrounder Michael Davies was simply devastating for the Brookers as their marquee player against the Marygoons at Nar Nar Goon. He blasted an unbeaten 104 as the visitors reached 2/169 in their 20 overs, before then finishing with 4/4 as the Marygoons were rolled for 65. Emerald, meanwhile, was just as emphatic in their Round 1 - thumping Aura Vale at Chandler Reserve. After winning the toss and batting, the Bombers reached 3/234 from their 20 overs with Geordie Scott the star of the show with a superb 110 not out and skipper AJ Walker adding 72 from the top of the order. In reply, Aura Vale could only muster 8/71, with Trent Rolfs the main destroyer with an incredible 6/5 from his four overs. In some of the other Round 1 results, Pakenham (6/156) proved too strong for fellow Premier outfit Merinda Park (7/108); Cardinia (7/136) outlasted Clyde (7/134) in a thriller at E. Ben Maroney in fine form By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW ROUND 7 (DAY 1) A GLORIOUS century in the Premier Division by Cardinia’s Ben Maroney (114) has put his side into an ominous position in their clash with Pakenham/Upper Toomuc. The Bulls champ was in fine touch, combining with Neil Barfuss (42) and Ricky Campbell (55no), to post 6/269 before deciding to have a crack at the Yabbies batsmen before stumps. Yabbies quick Ben McLeod (5/85) was a star, toiling hard all day for his team and bowling a whopping 25 overs. Then disaster struck, as the Yabbies lost two early wickets in the form of Daniel Strahan and Nick Kyval, who both fell without troubling the scorers. At stumps, the Yabbies are 2/26, with victory looking unlikely, but not impossible. An even day of cricket between Emerald and Merinda Park has set up an intriguing contest at Chandler Reserve. Bombers skipper AJ Walker elected to bat, and despite some fantastic new ball bowling by Daniel Diwell (6/43), the Bombers amassed a highly competitive and tricky total of 187. Andrew Alenson (46) top-scored for the Bombers, while Geordie Scott (39) and Clinton Marsh (35) played solid supporting knocks. With the ball, Cobras star Diwell was electric, while Leigh Paterson (3/64) got amongst the wickets. The Cobras are currently 1/33 off 17 overs, with Clinton Marsh taking the early scalp of Daniel McCalman (2). An upset is potentially brewing, with Upper Beaconsfield taking it right up to Kooweerup in their clash at Kooweerup Reserve. The Maroons elected to bat, and despite a few early wickets, were able to steady through the reliable Jonathon Caderamanpulle (77) and Matt Curtain (27). They ended on 179 off 59.1 overs, as Jess Mathers (4/71) starred for the Demons and newcomer Jack Bacon (2/11) showed promising signs. With a tense 17 overs to play out, the Demons struggled, but despite the Maroons bowling with great intensity, walked off the ground relatively unscathed at 1/43. Skipper Mark Cooper (22no) is looming as a big wicket for the Maroons next week. And finally, the round’s blockbuster clash between Tooradin and Pakenham is set to go down to the wire, with very little separating the two sides. The Seagulls elected to bat at home, as Russ Lehman (62) played strongly at the top of the order, to guide his side to a trick 178. Tom Hussey (25) and Aaron Avery (25) were also strong contributors with the bat. Lions bowler Chris Savage (4/22) was on song, while Tom Tyrrell (2/46) was also amongst the wickets. The Lions then lost an early wicket, courtesy of Cal O’Hare (1/5) to be sitting at an uncomfortable 1/10 at stumps. With a top spot up for grabs, next weekend’s run chase is set to be intense, in what is perhaps an entree for things to come later in the season. In this week’s action of the District division, Devon Meadows have punished a disappointing Tooradin side, banking first-innings points at Glover Recreation Reserve. Fighting for the top spot By Alistair Kennedy MAZDA has been enjoying steady growth over the past decade on the Australian new vehicle market overtaking both Holden and Ford on its way to currently sitting second in the overall sales hierarchy behind Toyota. The star performer throughout this period has been the Mazda3 small hatch and sedan which has been having a ding-gong battle with Toyota Corolla for top spot, initially in its category but in the past few years as Australia’s overall biggest-seller. Now into its third generation, launched here in January 2014, the Mazda3 first went on sale in Australia in April 2004, replacing the popular Mazda 323. In a very clever marketing move this new simplified naming format ensures that the word ‘Mazda’ is effectively used in every reference to the car. Mazda3 was given a refresher in July 2016 including a mild facelift together with changes to the steering and suspension systems and additional safety equipment. The exterior changes include a redesigned grille and wing with slimmer headlights that are either halogen or LED headlamps depending on the model. LED foglamps are standard on all models above the entry level Neo. Inside, there are changes to the decorative areas of the trim while the side ‘wings’ on the touchscreen display panel are a larger and easier to read. There’s good interior space front and rear. Boot capacity is 408 litres. There are six Mazda3 variants, each available in either five-door hatchback or four-door sedan bodies. In ascend-
ing price order they are Neo, Maxx, Touring, SP25; SP25 GT and SP25 Astina. Prices start at $20,490 for a manual Neo and run through to $35,490 for a SP25 Astina automatic. There is no price differential between hatch and sedan. There are two engine options. Neo, Maxx and Touring grades are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque; the sportier SP25, SP25 GT and SP25 use a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 138kW and 250Nm. Lack of demand saw the previous 2.2-litre turbo-diesel dropped from the range in January 2014. All models offer the choice of sixspeed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda3 has a long list of standard safety equipment. In addition to the usual multiple airbags, enhanced ABS braking and stability/ traction control all models have rear parking sensors; whiplash-minimising front seats; hill start assist; and IsoFix child seat anchor points. Also standard in all models are GVectoring Control (GVC) and Smart City Brake Support-Forward (SCBS). The G-Vectoring Control system improves chassis balance by sensing movements of the steering wheel and modifying the amount of torque to each of the front wheels and changing the amount of grip that’s required. Systems that uses sensors and/or cameras to either prevent or reduce the impact of forward collisions are becoming more common. Each car company uses a different name and Mazda has chosen Smart

The big, open grille dominates the front of the popular Mazda3. City Brake Support-Forward (SCBSF) for its camera-based system. Fortunately the generic name of automatic emergency braking is now gaining popularity. All Mazda3 variants above the base Neo also get a similar system that acts in the same way to reduce damage while reversing (SCBS-R), as well as a reversing camera. These models also get the very useful Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) that identifies approaching cars when reversing out of parking spots and Blind Spot Monitoring.
The highest-spec models also add features such as Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR); Smart Brake Support (SBS); Lane-Keep Assist (LAS); Driver Attention Alert (DAA); adaptive headlights; and radar cruise control. Our Mazda3 test car was the manual mid-spec Maxx. Despite its sleek styling entry and exit doesn’t require too much bending and scraping. The front seats are firm but comfortable with good lateral support. Although most commuters will no doubt opt for the convenience of an automatic transmission we enjoyed
the extra control of the car’s six-speed manual. It has a nice short shift pattern and the clutch is light enough for the numerous changes required around the urban jungle. The car cruised smoothly and comfortably on the motorway segment of our test. On the rural back roads we had great fun moving through the gears over some undulating and winding terrain. The steering is well-weighted and responsive. The extra stability from the new G-Vectoring Control system means that there’s less movement of the steering wheel needed to turn-in. Fuel consumption from the manual hatch is listed at 5.9 litres on the combined urban/highway cycle. We averaged in the low sevens during our week-long test. Mazda3 combines great looks both inside and out with capable performance, comfort and very good value for money. Add a large array of safety equipment and it’s no surprise that it has been selling its socks off for more than a decade.
