Access ramped on up THE Upper Yarra Museum has ramped up its access with the launch on Wednesday, 30 November of its $40,000-plus access ramp.

The ramp echoes one featured in a 1964 photograph of the railway station that now houses the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society’s museum in Yarra Junction and will enable much greater access to the entire museum collection via the railway platform.

Ambulance leak claims made in the letter that the policy will affect the ability of Yarra Junction to respond to incidents in the response area which runs from Seville to Cambarville and out to Yellingbo.

An email from the Senior Team Manager at Yarra Junction seen by the Mail states the ‘move up’ policy aims to “assist with increasing resource availability across the (Metropolitan East) region”.

Ms Anderson said Ambulance Victoria said their communications and dispatch system provided an accurate picture of what each ambulance in Victoria was doing at any particular time and as a result they could move ambulances around the wider community to ensure they were well-placed to respond to the next triple-zero call.

A TRIAL ‘move up’ of a Yarra Junction-based ambulance from Friday through to Sunday will rob the response area of a vital resource.

The claim was made last week in an anonymous letter to the Mail.

The trial which started in October has paramedics in the ambulance (code name Millgrove) operating from 1pm to 10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, heading down the line to await instructions on where they need to go and stay for the day.

A Healesville-based ambulance (code name Coldstream) will also be part of the trial from Monday to Thursday.

Jena,10, on world stage

By Kath Gannaway A 10-YEAR-OLD Woori Yallock girl with stars in her eyes is about to experience her own piece of Fantasyland, with a glimpse of Tomorrowland, Adventureland and Frontierland as well.

Jena Schaak flew out of Melbourne on Monday, 5 December, to take part in an acting and modelling seminar at Disney World in Orlando, America.

It’s a dream come true for Jena, who was one of 20 young people selected at an audition of over 1000 contestants at Crown Casino earlier this year.

Jena told the Mail on Friday that she was tremendously excited after a lifetime (eight years) of not only dreaming, but working towards a career under the bright lights.

Asked what sparked her dream, Jena said it was something she had wanted since she

was just a toddler.

“I think it was all the glam and glitter of the dresses I would see, and I love public speaking and being in the spotlight,” she said.

Acting, modelling and singing classes have been a big part of her life, and she is a member of the Yarra Valley Youth Theatre.

Upon completion of the week-long seminar, Jena will perform in a showcase before industry experts, talent scouts and acting and modelling agents with the hope of impressing and being signed on to continue to hone her dream career.

Jena will have lots of love, support ... and fun with her parents, grandparents and sisters, Echo and Dixi, sharing the big adventure which has been stretched to include Hollywood, driving Route 66, New York for Christmas and Niagara Falls.

Museum access made easy

By Kath Gannaway WHEN members of the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society decided to ramp things up with an ambitious project at their Yarra Junctionbased museum, they signed on for a lengthy process.

The launch of a $40,000-plus access ramp to the museum on Wednesday, 30 November, was very much a tribute to former member and initiator of the project, Rhonda Simmonds, and to the unrelenting determination of UYVHS president Tom O’Meara and other members who saw it through.

Mr O’Meara said it was four years since they first decided a ramp was needed.

“After many instances of watching the aged, the disabled, the infirm, the injured struggle up the steps to the station platform, the need for an access ramp was glaringly evident,” Mr O’Meara said.

He said the aspiration was to construct a ramp based on 90 per cent heritage, recreating a previous ramp, and 10 per cent access formula.

“That did not eventuate, and, in fact, the proportions were pretty much reversed to achieve the final design you see here today,” he said proceeding to thank the volunteers and others involved in the preliminary excavation works and the agencies and companies who came

Mr O’Meara said it was the longterm goal to make the ramp the new entrance, recreating the layout of the 1960s and to campaign to promote the new accessibility of the museum to groups outside the shire.

He said future projects included restoration of the goods shed and railway cottage, to run three exhibitions in the ticket room and to participate in at least six events in 2017.

DISASTER was narrowly averted on Sunday morning, when an elderly driver wrote off two cars at Healesville’s BP service station.

Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson said that a 32-year-old Fitzroy North man was filling his car with fuel at the service station about 11am on Sunday, 4 December.

At that time, a 70-year-old Healesville driver entering the station put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and hit the car, causing it to spin.

Sgt Coulson said it was likely that both cars would be written off in the crash, and that the 70-year-old narrowly avoided hitting a petrol bowser, instead hitting bollards surrounding it.

He said the crash was a case of the driver hitting the wrong pedal, then putting their foot down “in that panic”.

“It’s one of those situations that sometimes, they’ve accidentally hit the accelerator, they keep pushing harder,” he said.

The 70-year-old driver will undergo a licence review as a result of the crash.

$3000 cash stolen DETECTIVES are looking for thieves who made off with $3000 in cash after breaking into a Yarra Glen retail premises last week.

Overnight between Wednesday, 30 November and Thursday, 1 December, unknown persons smashed the front door of a retail premises on Bell Street, Yarra Glen.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said the thieves made off with $3000.

He urged anyone who might have seen suspicious behaviour, or vehicles parked nearby, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Mix of chronic pain and fear FEAR-AVOIDANCE behaviour is a theory that evolved in the 1980s that continues to both gain momentum and create debate about the nature of musculoskeletal pain.

We all experience acute pain at some stage or other.

Yet, while most will recover from a painful episode once the initial symptoms settle, some will spiral into a chronic pain pattern that negatively influences not just their physical health but also eventually their emotional, psychological and even their economic well-being.

The fear-avoidance behaviour model states it is overly fearful people who go on to develop chronic pain.

It is thought that these fears arise from an initial injury or painful episode involving actual soft tissue damage, yet once the injury has healed the person continue to associate those movements with the pain.

This can lead to disengagement

with a range of meaningful activities such as sport, hobbies, social contact and work - leading to disability and depression.

And more pain: a vicious cycle, indeed.

Opponents of the model have long decried its simplicity, yet new evidence appears to be emerging that places this model in a more modern setting.

Professor Lorimer Mosely from the University of South Australia is leading the charge.

Most notably he hypothesised recently that those who perceive expected musculoskeletal pain to be uncontrollable are most likely to develop

chronic pain, such as people with fibromylagia.

And those who perceive it to be controllable, yet still avoid the behaviour, are likely to develop avoidance behaviours that are specific to that particular task or movement only.

This provides some interesting cues to practitioners on how to both identify at risk people at an early stage of injury and treat those who are suffering from chronic pain.

It underlines the need for early intervention for spinal pain and injuries from science-based practitioners, and the restoration and reinforcement of normal movement patterns to avoid the chronic pain spiral.

Police appeal for help with big $200,000 vehicle heist

By Jesse Graham YARRA Ranges detectives are renewing their appeal for witnesses, after a truck and two tractors worth $200,000 were stolen from a Coldstream property.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi told the Mail that a white 2008 Isuzu 950 tray truck with two Kubota L5740 tractors loaded on the back were stolen on Sunday 20 November.

It is believed that thieves broke in to a compound on Station Street, near Coldstream West Road, about 1pm on the

Sunday and stole the truck, driving it through a locked gate to escape.

On Tuesday 29 November, Victoria Police issued photos of the stolen vehicles, and said that detectives believe a second truck was involved in the theft.

The second truck, a white flat-bedded tow truck, was seen on CCTV, entering a paddock opposite the compound at the time of the theft.

The tractors were fitted with slashers at the time of the theft, and the three stolen vehicles were worth about $200,000.

By Kath Gannaway IN 2015 Lilydale and District Historical Society embarked on what they recognised themselves was an ‘ambitious’ project to commemorate the centenary of World War I. ‘They Answered the Call’ was officially launched by Casey MP Tony Smith on Saturday, 26 November, with descendants of a number of the featured WWI soldiers joining society members and invited guests, including Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Noel Cliff.

Society president Sue Thompson said the project aim was to compile a list of all the men and women who served in WWI from the society’s collections area of Lilydale,

Coldstream, Gruyere, Killara, Seville, Silvan, Montrose and Kilsyth, and make them available digitally and in hard copy.

Three members of Lilydale’s Goodall family were among the ‘locals’ who answered the call.

Joseph Francis Goodall used the alias Cyril Fish when he enlisted at 17 years of age in 1917. He was following in the footsteps of his cousins Thomas Henry Goodall, 25, William Henry Goodall, 28, who had enlisted in 1915.

Joseph’s alias didn’t hold up, and he was returned to Australia in 1918, William also returned home in 1918 having served in Egypt and France before being repatriated to England with gunshot wounds.

Society president Sue Thompson said the story was ongoing.

Kids have firey answers ‘CHECK Your Chances’ is a winning catch-phrase, and excellent advice, coming out of the inaugural Hillcrest CFA schools colouring competition.

The competition was run through the Woori Yallock, Don Valley and Launching Place primary schools in the lead-up to the brigade’s Open Day on Sunday, 27 November.

Organiser, Hillcrest volunteer, Fourth Lieutenant Andrew Smith, said the aim was to raise fire awareness through activities that suited the different age groups.

The 69 entries were spread over three age-groups with Preps to Grade 2 focusing on Captain Koala and Friends

while Grades 3 and 4 were asked to think about what qualities a Superhero Firefighter might have.

Grades 5 and 6 were set the task of designing a fire season logo based on checking the fire danger ratings.

Lt Smith said the responses were inspiring.

“The best way to fight fire is to understand it and the idea behind the project was to approach each age group at a level they could engage with,” he said.

“A deeper level of investigation and understanding was required of the older kids and we got some really great entries from those kids.

close die in a disaster was a risk factor for poorer mental health outcomes, but noted that “very few” survey respondents were people who lost immediate family members.

“When they provided information about that relationship, it tended to be sort of extended family, or neighbours or friends or community members - and that level of bereavement was still associated with poorer mental health outcomes,” she said.

“I would suggest our figures are likely to be an understatement of what’s out there, because we didn’t have as much involvement from those who lost someone from their immediate family.

The report lists advice for residents to keep in mind for future disasters, and includes 12 recommendations for government and service providers, to improve responses to disasters.

One recommendation was for a “communication register”, so people who leave affected communities, such as Marysville, or who are affected by the disaster while not a resident can be notified of support services in the aftermath.

A STUDY into the long-term effects of 2009’s Black Saturday bushfires has been released, compiling six years of interviews and surveys from affected communities and more than 1000 residents.

On 29 November, the University of Melbourne released the Beyond Bushfires study, looking into how relationships, in family and community, affect people’s long-term health after natural disasters, such as the Black Saturday fires.

Associate Professor Lisa Gibbs was one of 20 researchers on the team creating the study, and said information gathering and consultations began in affected communities as early as 2010.

From 2011-’13, 1056 people living in affected communities at the time of the fires took part in online and phone surveys, with 736 completing another survey in 2014. Some 35 people aged from 4-66 also took part in in-depth interviews.

The report stated that, though there was a majority of people who were “resilient” to the disaster, 26 per cent of respondents in highly-impacted communities reported symptoms of mental health problems that could require professional support in the three to four-year

period after the fires.

This number dropped to 21.9 per cent when surveyed five years after the fires.

“People do have natural resilience, and there is a process where people work through those issues,” Dr Gibbs said.

“But what we found was one of the factors that led to longerterm impacts was a lot of the stuff that happens after the fires - the stressors of loss of accommodation, change in income, impact on relationships.

“It’s the sort of thing that really commonly happens after a natural disaster, and that’s where it undermines people’s ability to ... get back on track.”

The report noted that Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) tended to be higher among people with fractured social networks, and Dr Gibbs said children also showed signs of anxiety years after the fires.

“People have put small children in the too-hard basket in the hope that they’re too young to take it all in, but we found that’s far from true,” Dr Gibbs said.

“Many kids had anxiety and their school learning suffered.

Even those who were babies on Black Saturday were sometimes profoundly affected.”

Sue's still making histor y

By Jesse Graham NEARLY three decades of commitment to documenting the region’s history has been recognised, with a historical society president receiving a state-wide honour for her service.

At a meeting on 5 November, Lilydale and District Historical Society president Sue Thompson received an award from the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, “in recognition of distinguished service to history in Victoria�.

Ms Thompson said the Award of Merit, handed over by RSHV president Don Garden, came on her 29th year in the society, after joining up in 1987. “It’s recognition of my contribution, not only locally, but to history in general,� she said. “And I think it’s a credit to all the people ... my family, in particular, because my husband, Wally, has put up with a lot over the years - and my two boys. “Over the years, mum’s been off doing this, that, or the other, or writing books or on deadline ... so they’ve been terrific, too.�

Ms Thompson’s start at the society came when she was a journalist at the Lilydale Express, working on an edition for the centenary of the paper and gathering stories from the past. “I contacted the Historical Society and met with the then-president Leigh Blackburn and Sandy Ross, who was the archivist at the time - he had photographs, so we got our heads together and selected a whole bunch of photos from the society’s collection to go with the stories in the 100-page newspaper edition we were putting out,� she said. “That linked my great interests in family history and journalism and local history. “They convinced me to join the society and I joined and I’ve been

She said the society had been a welcoming group, and that members are able to follow their own passions when it comes to history, whether it be research, writing or another avenue. “I think the society has been fantastic, because they’ve allowed everyone to develop and grow their own interests in the society - my forte was writing books, so they’d write the stories

and I’d knock them into shape,� Ms Thompson said.

She said some of her favourite work at the society was in promoting Dame Nellie Melba’s life, as well as times when the council and land owners have sought help to find the history of old houses in the area.

SANTA receives thousands of letters from children all over Australia with requests for all sorts of things, including toys, pets and even world peace.

Australia Post works with Santa, and his elves, at Christmas to make sure you receive a reply to your letter (you must live in Australia though).

Ron, at 88, still comes in most mornings and does deliveries.

Along with Andrew and the team, including Jacob and Lauri from third generation, this is truly a family business.

Changing the face of art

LANDSCAPE paintings inspired by scenes in Australia and around the world will hang on the walls of Yering Station’s cellar door until mid-January, after a new exhibition opened last Friday.

On Friday, 2 December, Melbourne artist Karen Hopkins opened her latest exhibition, Impermanence, at Yering Station near Yarra Glen.

Featuring about 50 works, from landscape paintings to small sculptures, Ms Hopkins said the works explored the idea of change being a part of life, and not a concept to be feared.

“I suppose, in thinking about life and how we try to hold onto stability, we try to keep things the same - we’re kind-of afraid of the unknown, and I wanted to make a link between nature and who we are as humans,” she said.

“I was kind-of using the landscape as a metaphor for change, and a constant reminder that life is changing all of the time.”

Impermanence is Ms Hopkins’ 17th exhibition since beginning as a professional painter in 1991 - it is her second at Yering Station, after holding an exhibition there in 2013.

“I’m really thrilled to be invited back,” she said.

She said she had worked primarily in painting landscapes since starting out, after a former life as a teacher - though she said she also painted cityscapes with people, the works in Impermanence are based around nature.

Ms Hopkins said the works were based on areas she had seen in her travels, both around Europe and the world and in Australia, and that she takes photos on her travels that she uses to inspire her paintings.

The works will be accompanied by poetry works, also written by Ms Hopkins.

She said she wanted her works to be “uplifting”, and hoped that visitors to the cellar door would take on the idea of accepting change.

“I suppose, if anyone had a glimpse and was inspired to think, “Yeah, no, I need to embrace impermanence, or not be afraid of the unknown” - if anyone was to come away with that idea, that’d be awesome.”

Impermanence will be on display until 17 January, 2017.

Dukes call it a day AFTER seven years of playing to crowds around the valley and in Melbourne, the dukes behind the Dukes of Despair have decided to call it a day, with one final show to finish up.

On Sunday, 11 December, the Dukes of Despair will play their final show at the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel, performing with Luke Austen from 4-7pm.

The band’s drummer, David Johnston, said the decision to wind up was not the result of a feud or falling out among members, but a realisation that they’d done their dash.

“I’m feeling quite philosophical about it - and we all are, really - because we gave it a fly, we did it for seven years, we played a bit down in Melbourne and we sort of hoped we would step up to a higher level, maybe get into some bigger festivals ... but that didn’t happen,” he said.

“It’s a pretty competitive world for musos of our age - it’s not easy, so we just accepted, ultimately, that we’d done everything that we really could and it was time to call it a day.”

During their stint, the dukes put out three albums, performed live on radio and performed at numerous venues around the valley.

Mr Johnston said one of his favourite shows with the band was when they performed with popular 70s band Dingoes at Stones of the Yarra Valley winery.

“We were really pleased to be able to support them,” he said.

“Apart from that ... we’ve always thoroughly enjoyed festivals.

“We always have a lot of fun when we play, and the way we line up ... standing along the front, there’s a lot for people to see when they watch us it’s very lively and we have a lot of fun and jokes in between songs.”

Each band member has other projects running, with Kim Farrell and Jeff Jenkins performing in DYLANesque and Mr Johnston in the Soulsville choir; bassist Tony McKay will return to playing jazz.

But Mr Johnston said there was a “John Farnham principle” in place, in that he would not rule out a reformation down the track.

“In no way do any of the band

members hate each other - we’re all really good friends, we all love each other ... we love everything about the Dukes, and when we’re not in the Dukes, we’re all really good friends.

“It’s never say die, basically.”

Nelson becomes the king

By Dean Thompson RACING at Alexandra Speedway on Saturday, 3 December saw competitive fields in the Sports Sedans and Standard Saloons.

In particular, there was a great night’s racing with the King of the Valley for Sports Sedans won by Matt Nelson, prelude to the title for Standard Saloons won by Russell Hill and the Junior Sedans won by Kasey Garlick all in very close finishes.

The Sports Sedans were competing in a state point’s event with a busy season ahead for them.

Victorian champion Damien Miller and last season’s runner up Andrew Jordan were among the line-up with nine heats preceding the feature race.

Wins went to Damien Miller, Brendan Miller, Jack Van Bremen - brothers Damien Miller and Brendan Miller again - Matt Nelson with two in a row, Samuel Williams and Matt Stampfli.

An intended 25 lap ‘Alexandra and Yea Premix’ supported King of the Valley feature event due to track conditions was reduced down to 20 laps.

Nelson, in his six-cylinder powered Commodore, was determined to get one over the Miller brothers Damien and Brendan.

In early stages Nelson had the wood over Damien Miller who soon slipped back into the Brendan’s clutches and Brendan then set about passing Damien and chasing Nelson.

Nelson was stronger through traffic while the Miller boys were slightly faster on the timing monitor.

When the chequered flag was held aloft due to the dust, Brendan Miller was trying to close in on Nelson, Nelson the winner by one second with Brendan Miller, Damien Miller then Stampfli and Dale Morrison who started way back in the feature field.

With the next race meeting at Alexandra for Standard Saloons being their Victorian State Title in March, many drivers from Gippsland, South East Melbourne, Eastern Suburbs Melbourne, North East Victoria, and Bendigo and Swan Hill, entered the last

Numerous racers who had won events this season were in the field with Nick Chrystie the top Alexandra driver this season among the field and the current Victoria two ranked driver Cameron Dike; the number three ranked Bradley Hill and number four ranked Mark Miles were also competing.

Russell Hill started strongly on one of his favourite tracks winning the first heat and his nephew Brad Hill the next.

Russell Hill backed up with another heat win in the second round with Allan Poole also taking a win and Dike then Aaron Marshall rounding out the qualifying with wins also.

Like the Sports Sedans the final was reduced in the Standard Saloon final.

However, the Hill boys, Russell and Brad, were never troubled by any of the others as they gapped the field early.

Out of 18 starters, only two didn’t finish the race and starting from position 14 Chrystie was the driver everybody was watching.

Russell Hill at the fall of the chequered flag was a 0.797 second winner

ahead of Bradley Hill and fastest on the time sheets.

Then, almost seven seconds back, Chrystie finished third with Dike and Mark Miles closing out the top five.

The Junior Sedan racing once again was sensational and they too also had a close finish in the final.

Ricky Cornwall, Tyler Barton, Jesse Garlick, Cornwall again twice more and Jeremy Gorski were the six heat race winners.

When the final began, Cornwall got the best start and immediately set about getting away from Kasey Garlick.

Back in the pack there was a sensational battle between Barton, Courtney Meakins and Tim Gorski.

Kasey Garlick then made her move and she went flying past Cornwall down the back end of the race track and assumed the lead with Cornwall from there throwing everything at her to retake the position Garlick arrived at the finish line 0.673 of a second ahead of Cornwall with Tim Gorski, Barton and Courtney Meakins round out the top five just over nine second further back.

Other racing on the night included the Ladies Open Sedans where Sonia

Kasey Garlick the Junior Sedan winner. 162821 Nelson won the first two heats on a watered down track before McPherson won the last on a dry track and the final by over ten seconds.

Nelson was second then rookie driver Jodie Finnegan finishing in third place with Alex Smith then Tegan Bullard rounding out the top five.

Finally, Street Stocks racing was dominated by Shane Roycroft and Troy Polley.

Polley won two heats and Roycroft the other before they both went at it hammer and tong in the final. Roycroft

crossed the feature race finish line 0.468 of a second in front of Polley, Debbie Jones back in third then Belinda McCoubrie and Felicity Roycroft.

The Vern and Jackie Parker Photography best presented Street Stock award went by the way of Belinda McCoubrie while the Vern and Jackie Parker Photography Drive of the final in Sports Sedans went to Matt Stampfli.

Alexandra & District Speedway Club return to racing in March for the Standard Saloon Victorian title.

By John Wood AT the Woods Point Gun Club, the penultimate competition for 2016 was the President’s Championships and Trophy.

This was the 44th year of these events at the club.

The obligatory starting event on a warm and sunny day was the 10 target points decision Eye Opener.

Mick Ward and Phillip Desmond took the AA Grade sash, 30/30, Trevor Ewert A Grade, 29/30, Peter West, Geoff Hill and Richard Brown successful in B Grade, 25/30, and Steven Bedggood the sole winner in C Grade, 29/30.

The first of the Championships was 25 targets Double Barrel.

Darren Clark, Trevor Ewert, Phillip Woods and Phillip Desmond all returned perfect scores to proceed into an enthralling shoot off for the overall sash.

Ewert missed an early target and

Woods shortly thereafter, with Clark and Desmond continuing on.

Eventually Desmond missed his 18th target to give Clark the Championship win with a final score of 43/43.

The Grade winners and place getters were: AA - Darren Clark, 43/43, Desmond, 42/43; A - Woods 27/27, Ewert 26/27; B - Richard Brown, 24/25, Peter West, 23/25; Frank Balcombe’s 23/25 was enough for C Grade, from Bedggood, 22/25.

The main event was the 25 target Handicap President’s Trophy with an engraved glass trophy for the lucky winner.

Was it nerves?

Who knows, but no shooter managed the perfect 25/25.

The best scores were 24/25 from Trevor Newman, Daniel Chinn and Steven Bedggood with Chinn taking the trophy, 37/38 from Bedggood, 36/38 and Newman 31/33.

Tony Armstrong, Jim West, Ken Skinner, John Wood, Geoff Hill and Desmond with 23/25 each - shot off for the 4th prize; West the winner, 31/33.

The President’s 25 target Tower Championship finished the day with Rob Bevis, Mick Ward and Trevor Ewert managing the full 25/25.

After a relatively short shoot-off, Bevis took the sash 33/33 from Ward 32/33 and Ewert 26/27.

John Winters, Jim West, Newman and Hill fought for the 4th place prize with Hill the eventual winner 30/31.

The overall High Gun was a close result with Newman winning the vicepresident’s sash, 72/75, with Bevis and Bedggood right on his heels, 71/75.

The overall Yearly High Gun is a close affair with Bevis and Desmond in contention, but we will find out after the full year’s results are tallied.

The day’s sponsors were John and Annette Wood and Peter and Ellen West.

Rovers set to chase big score

By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION WHAT a treat spectators of Yarra Valley cricket had on Saturday afternoon.

Brilliant conditions were complemented with a tight battle between bat and ball on the field, in the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, as teams fight for crucial wins as we close in on the Christmas break.

The biggest game of the round is being played at Mount Evelyn, where the Rovers are hosting Warburton-Millgrove in a top-of-the-table clash.

The visitors won the toss and didn’t hesitate in batting on a ground that has seen significant totals posted by the team batting first in recent weeks.

Openers Ben and David Lever made the most of the early going as they managed to not only navigate through a tight spell from the opening bowlers, but ensured the scoreboard was ticking over from the beginning.

Youngster Darcy Fraser was brought into the attack and had immediate success, removing the dangerous David Lever in his first over.

The wicket saw recruit Jason King join Ben Lever at the wicket, and the pair proceeded to put the Burras in a strong position.

With Lever assuming the attacking role, and King playing the supporting role, the pair put together an impressive 54-run partnership in good time to put together the foundations of a good team score.

With King’s dismissal, Tim McKail (25) enjoyed continuing the momentum of the innings.

The Burras were able to hold firm as Kane Jones and Chad Witherdin applied the screws leading up to tea, but at 2/110 at the main break, the visitors had themselves well set for an onslaught.

That’s exactly what transpired, as the next 12 overs saw 68 runs scored as the pressure was heaped on the Rovers’ bowlers.

Lever’s innings continued to grow, and, although impatient, his stroke-play was brilliant.

Brutal drives and thundering pull shots saw the inform opener race to 89, before a mistimed drive saw his departure with the score on 4/177.

With more than 20 overs in the bank and plenty of batting force in the sheds, the visitors were still entitled to believe a score in excess of 300 was on the cards.

Brett Winzer (46) showcased a wide variety of shots on both sides of the wicket, and his contribution was significant in the context of the innings.

Unfortunately his wicket just short of a half century gave the home side an opportunity to work its way back into the contest.

An excellent partnership of bowling between brothers Darcy (4/38) and Gareth (2/77) Fraser ensured that the reins would be kept tight on the batsmen over the closing overs, while Chad Witherdin (3/14) continued to chip in with tight bowling and wickets.

Warburton-Millgrove were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

However, with regular wickets, this meant that the innings didn’t quite have the explosive finish to push the score towards 300.

In the end, a score of 255 is an excellent one, and at the start of most games, if you were to tell a team they would post a score beyond 250, they would gladly take it.

The focus is now on the home side’s batting as they have proven their worth over recent rounds.

This will be no easy task against an experienced bowling line up that will ensure runs are hard to come by, so a successful run chase would be a significant feather in the Rovers’ cap.

Seville hosted Woori Yallock, and after posting their first win of the season last round, the Blues were keen to keep themselves in the finals mix.

Woori Yallock on the other hand had their first bitter taste of defeat last round, and their minds were solely on correcting an unusual blip on the radar.

Upon winning the toss, Seville were keen to post a score, and co-captains Matt Hadlum and Jake McInness put their hands up to fight against the competition’s best.

The pair was able to navigate through some brilliant bowling from the Tigers, particularly from Simon Young who began with five successive maiden overs, giving their young line up some confidence that they could absorb anything the visitors threw at them.

That came in the form of Hayden Smith, who was able to break the stubborn partnership, removing Hadlum with the score on 1/33.

With the fall of the first wicket, Young was brought back into the attack and had immediate success removing Harrison Byrne.

The Tigers sensed a shift in momentum, but Liam McGookin (40) joined McInness at the wicket, and the pair continued to take up the fight to the reigning premiers.

With some patience against the skill of Young, interspersed with boundaries from the spinners, the pair was able to navigate their way through the tea interval, to have their team well set at 2/113 after 45 overs.

Tigers captain Ryan Smith took it upon himself to change the course of the innings, with the vital wicket of McInness for a well made 65, followed shortly after by the wicket of McGookin.

In the space of a handful of overs Woori Yallock had their noses back in front.

With a couple of more wickets to Young, the innings began to teeter at 6/128, and the champs could sense a quick kill.

Tom Page (31) and Matthew Johnson put together a useful partnership, with Page adding some enterprising runs.

But once that partnership was broken, so too was the Blues’ resistance as their innings was wrapped up for 169 with some six overs still in the bank.

Simon Young was the pick of the bowlers with amazing figures of 4/30 off 23 overs, while he was ably supported by the rest of the bowlers, in particular the spin of Ryan Smith (3/28).

Seville would’ve been proud of their resistance against an excellent attack, and their ability to put value on their wicket has seen marked improvements in results in recent weeks.

With that said, their bowling will need to be at its absolute best if they are to keep Woori Yallock under the target.

Bowling has been Seville’s strength this season, so they will enter day two with much confidence of regular wickets to take it up to the Tigers.

In the final game of the round, Yarra Glen hosted Healesville in a crucial match where Yarra Glen are searching for their first win of the season, while the visitors are aiming to capitalise on recent form to keep themselves in the finals picture.

As was the trend on this beautiful day, Yarra Glen gladly accepted the opportunity to bat upon winning the toss.

They made the most of this opportunity with a brisk start to the innings.

The opening partnership was eventually broken by Dermott Fry, with the score on 34, but the momentum didn’t wane as Brendan Ricci joined David Brambilla at the crease.

The pair was able to construct an excellent partnership through some useful stroke-play.

Although not littered with boundaries the score continually grew with well placed ones and twos.

The Bloods became increasingly urgent in their search for not only wickets, but someone to stem the runs, as they tried their full repertoire of bowlers.

Nothing was successful as Brambilla and Ricci continued to heap on the pressure leading their team to a commanding position of 1/156 at tea.

After the tea adjournment, the ball was thrown to Matthew Peck and he had immediate success

removing Ricci for a well constructed 63 in the first over after the break.

This immediately changed the momentum of the innings.

Peck (4/32) produced an excellent spell of bowling which netted him four wickets and heaped the pressure back on Yarra Glen to capitalise on their entertaining start.

Yarra Glen has proven they have the quality in the top order to establish starts, but they quickly fall away when the resistance is broken.

Unfortunately for the home side, this was again the case.

When Brambilla was dismissed for an excellent 73, with the score on 5/183, the end came fairly quickly from there.

Veteran Richard Ellisdon added some valuable runs, but Bloods’ spinner Scott Hamer (4/46) continued his good form with the ball, and he wrapped up the innings before the total got out of hand.

The final total of 213 will still take some chasing for the Bloods who have their trials and tribulations with the bat this season, but after looking down the barrel of a score beyond 250 they would be relatively pleased with the end result from day one.

If Yarra Glen can expose the flaws Healesville are experiencing with their top order, then they will give themselves a chance of a first win.

Healesville on the other hand will sense this is an excellent opportunity to iron out their problems, and a successful chase beyond 200 will give them some much needed batting confidence.

McDonald’s team takes it HEALESVILLE BOWLS WEDNESDAY night saw the final night of the Corporate Challenge for 2016 in a very keenly fought battle to the finish.

The proud owners of the title as winners of the Challenge this time around were McDonald Maintenance, followed closely

by Stevenson Builders in second place and the Healesville Hospital coming from fifth place to grab third spot.

It was a successful night of bowling, followed by the presentation along with nibbles and refreshments while awaiting the result.

All 24 teams are already eagerly looking forward to the next challenge, which will begin in February 2017, hopefully with some better weather.

A good night was had by all.

Lateisha to lead

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics had four athletes competing for Victoria at this weekend’s Australian All Schools Championships.

An event that is easily the biggest single event on the Australian sporting calendar, it brings together the best secondary school athletes from around Australia.

The championships are also widely regarded as a stepping stone to further athletics honours, including Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes Lateisha Willis, Tayleb Willis and Georgia Laven competed on the Saturday, day two of the championships, Georgia and Sam Norton also compete on day three.

Lateisha stole the show with a dominant win in her 100m hurdles final, retaining the title she has held for the past two years.

Brother Tayleb was not to be outdone with a hard-fought bronze medal in his 90m hurdles.

Lateisha finished an excellent fifth in her 100m behind sprint sensation Riley Day and Georgia Laven finished tenth in a tough 1500m final.

The weekend before, the club had two athletes, Kiara Flavel and Maddie laven, competing at the Australian Primary School Championships in Sydney.

Both Kiara and Maddie ran personal bests in their 800m heats to qualify for the final.

Kiara ran a brave race to finish second and Maddie not far behind in eighth place.

Eldridge in stable effort WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD - The daily winner was Mick Eldridge, with a great 41 points. Neil Leckerby was ‘pipped’, with 40 points. Balls went to 37.

The NTP winners were Andy Lockey (9th), Andrew McMath (11th) and Ron Hottes (15th).

TWILIGHT This week’s winner was Paul Munro scoring 22 points for the front nine. He only just won, on a countback, as Malcolm Dickson

also accumulated 22 points. The rundown only extended to 17. The NTPs were won by Andy Sweet (3rd), Mr Kempton (7th) and ‘Goose’ Munro (9th).

SATURDAY Stableford - A Grade: Ben Lord with 37 points, a fine effort off the ‘back-tees’. B Grade: Alan Johnston (36). The balls went down to 33.

The club hosted another round of the AV Shield at Morrison Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Sensational weather, warm and calm, provided perfect conditions for some excellent perfomances from athletes visiting fromthroughout the eastern suburbs of Mebourne.

The little athletes enjoyed great morning conditions for their round of athletics.

Awards were handed out to athletes who had recorded four or more PBs in the previous round.

Motoring Hovering on law’s edge THE RACV is calling for an overhaul of the legislation covering motorised and non-motorised recreational devices, such as hover boards and unicycles, labelling the current rules confusing and potentially unsafe.

A report by the RACV has found a string of inconsistencies in Victorian regulations covering Segways, hover boards, motorised unicycles, electric roller skates and skateboards, motorised eskies and chilldren’s toys and golf carts.

RACV Manager Roads and Traffic, Dave Jones, said the current regulations were flawed to the point they could compromise safety.

“Aside from the confusing component of the law, we also found that with some of the devices, weight limits were often not specified, age restrictions were rarely given and most devices did not provide safety information or even mention the safety gear required or recommended.

“Currently, most motorised recreational devices are defined as vehicles; however, they can’t be fitted with a number plate or registered.

“This means it is illegal for them to be used on public roads, nature strips, parks and footpaths.”

Mr Jones said the evidence was that motorised recreational devices were growing in popularity.

“With Christmas just around the corner, many of these devices will again be seen as the must-have item under the tree this year.

“Therefore, it is pressing that we have clear guidance and regulations that ensure the safety of the user and other road users sooner rather than later.

“We must also consider that these emerging transport devices could one day provide an alternative to short car trips, so it is imperative the legislation is rock solid.”

Mr Jones said a fall or impact with a car while on a recreational device could be as serious as one from a bicycle.

“Anyone who uses these recreational devices should not underestimate the safety issues,” he said.

“If parents are buying them for their kids, we recommend they buy the safety equipment at the same time.

“Always purchase approved helmet, knee and elbow pads, and a good tip is to store the safety equipment with the device to make it easy for children to

Mr Jones said it was important for riders and parents to know where they

“Any device with a motor over 200 watts or that can go faster than 10km/h

The grippy 45-series rubber combines with a faster steering-gear ratio to heighten driver engagement and deliver even greater agility.

The dual exhaust lifts the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine’s outputs to 135kW of power (+2kW) and 235Nm of torque (+4Nm), while maintaining Euro 5 emissions compliance and 7.9-litres/100km fuel economy.

On the outside, the sports-mesh radiator grille, halogen headlamp inserts, exterior mirror casings, boot-lip spoiler and rear-bumper diffuser are finished in gloss-black to match the sports alloy rims.

Front and rear corner parking sensors are also standard, while specific RZ decals on the lower rear door and boot lid enhance the car’s sporty personality.

Like every new Camry, the RZ is covered by Toyota Service Advantage with up to five standard scheduled services at $140 each during the first four years or 75,000km (whichever occurs first).

TOYOTA has launched an upgraded Camry RZ Special Edition, with satellite navigation now added to the standard equipment list.

Last offered in the middle of this year, the Camry RZ was an almost immediate sell-out, with all 1100 examples finding homes within weeks of the limited-build model going on sale.

The new Camry RZ Special Edition is restricted to just 700 units, this time featuring satellite navigation with SUNA real time traffic updates, a seven-inch touch-screen interface, six-speaker Digital Audio (DAB+) and voice recognition.

These upgrades come on top of the extra equipment already added to the Camry RZ, representing total additional value approaching $5000, while this Special Edition model is priced just $2700 above the Camry Altise on which it is based.
