Singers ready to raise their voices Harmony Square will light up on Friday 16 December when the city’s annual Carols by Candlelight take full voice.

It is the second year the carols have been held in Harmony Square.

MC Justin Peters is a classically trained tenor who regularly sings at weddings and churches across Victoria.

He is a regular at Carols by Candlelight and has also performed many times at Dandenong’s Australia Day festivities, the mayoral ball and during Seniors’ Week.

Justin is excited to once again be the MC for this year’s carols and will share the hosting duties with children’s entertainers The Workers.

Classically trained Celtic soprano Emma-Kate Tobia, who moved to Melbourne from Ireland, melds her pure lyrical voice with the timeless melodies of her Irish heritage.

She is a multiple award-winning artist whose career includes three years touring the USA with her show An Irish Dream.

She has featured on NBC-New York and performed for thousands of people outside the New York Stock Exchange and at the 250th St Patrick’s Day Parade Gala Ball alongside the Chieftains, The High Kings and Michael Flatley of Lord of the Dance and Riverdance.

US President Barak Obama gave her a kiss after she sang the US National Anthem for him in Dublin in May 2011.

With One Voice Greater Dandenong, led by the extraordinary Nicki Johnson, is one of Creativity Australia’s With One Voice choir programs that brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles through song.

With One Voice is all about the joy of song, the freedom of expression and the inspiration to change the world for the better.

The choir starts in the first week of February.

Market moves towards connection

By Jenna Hutton-Murdoch Dandenong’s Harmony Square will host a free family festival to foster community enrichment and connection on 8 December from 4pm until 9pm.

Organised by one of Avocare Community Connect’s Work for the Dole programs, the Christmas Twilight Market will feature a variety of entertaining activities to engage market goers.

With live bands, acoustic singers and interactive attractions including mechanical pony rides, face painting, balloon animals and a jumping castle, the event aims to offer an enjoyable experience to all.

“We hope the community love the market as much as we loved working on it,” said project supervisor Alvina Singh.

As an organisation dedicated to empowering people, feeding and supporting the community, Avocare’s Twilight Market, as well as showcasing market stalls, will also incorporate support stalls offering assistive information to the public.

An unmanned community table will provide references for support services within the City of Greater Dandenong and include various brochures from charitable associations addressing prevalent community and social issues. Market stalls will exhibit a spectrum of homemade goods encouraging smaller independent businesses.

Jewellery, indigenous art and handmade candle stalls will be a prominent element with all stall proceeds being used to maintain the provision of vital food relief and material aid currently offered

by Avocare. Multicultural food trucks, a traditional sausage sizzle and Christmas cookies will showcase delicious local food.

Vendors will be offering a selection of dumplings, Mexican cuisine, Greek doughnuts, gluten free selections, nut free options and a wealth of other tasty treats.

Gifts handed on to those in need Dandenong based group NGA Taonga I Tukuiho believes that charity begins at home.

Its name means “the gift handed down” in Maori, according to group organiser Olive Sarich, and that’s just what members will be doing this week.

Olive said they will be giving away new and pre-loved items to concession, pensioner or health care card holders this weekend from 11am to 4pm at The Dock, 176 Stud Road, Dandenong.

“There’ll be clothing, linen, shoes, toys, kitchenware, video games, blankets, books and more,” she said.

Most of the items have been donated by friends and family as well as members of the local community and for weeks Olive has been contacting local support services to pass the message on to their clients as well as advertising it at relevant locations.

She said they tried to run it annual and some-

times twice a year after starting the event five years ago.

“We have been collecting all year,” she said.

“We will be having a barbecue and as well as food and drink and this time we are going to have Father Christmas.”

She said the event started when her children left home and she was looking to downsize.

Rather than sell her unwanted belongings she passed them on to people who needed them as

“treasures handed down”.

As well as the private contributions there were also donations from local retailers and she said these would be used as door prizes throughout the day.

Olive said participants would be given shopping bags and would be allowed in to the building in groups of 10 to 12 during the day to make things easier on the volunteers manning the tables.

Dandenong shoppers can show their support for families affected by cancer National cancer charity Redkite predicts financial assistance for children and young people affected by cancer will be in higher demand than ever before as families feel the pressure with growing travel costs and living expenses during the holiday season.

Redkite has launched a five-week Christmas campaign with Coles at Noble Park, Dandenong Plaza, Dandenong and Keysborough.

From now until 27 December, Dandenong shoppers can buy a $2 Redkite donation card at Coles to provide financial and emotional support to children and young people with cancer and their families.

Redkite spokeswoman Monique Keighery predicted a surge in demand for support compared to last December.

“We’re seeing unprecedented demand for assistance from families facing their child’s cancer and we predict it will be over 20 per cent higher this Christmas compared to the same period last year,” she said.

“For many families, the Christmas period can be a really challenging time.

“Some families will get the devastating news

that their child has cancer and hundreds of children will be undergoing treatment or facing cancer’s impacts.

“We know from previous years that demand for Redkite’s support, including financial help and counselling sessions, is likely to increase.

“By buying a $2 donation card at Coles supermarket counters this festive season, shoppers can help children and young people with cancer and their families when they need it most.”

Victorian mother Simone Clements, whose six-year-old son Hayden Clements was diagnosed with a brain tumour, said the support from Redkite was invaluable in helping families such as her own.

“Redkite provides huge relief. Without them we couldn’t have got through this year. We received food and petrol vouchers and that assisted us so much,” she said.

“We were travelling into the hospital four to five days a week and the petrol bill, parking, medications and spending on food at the hospital just accumulated very quickly, and that didn’t even include babysitters or feeding extra family members who came to help.”

Bigger than your average elves Bouncing elves on stilts will spread Christmas cheer around Greater Dandenong.

Santa’s helpers Horace and Boris and baubles on roller skates will also visit Douglas Street in Noble Park, Harmony Square and Lonsdale Street in Dandenong and Multicultural Place in Springvale from Tuesday 20 to Friday 23 December.

Performers will be in Dandenong from 9.30am to 11.30am on Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 December.

They’ll spread season’s greetings in Noble Park from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Tuesday 20 and Thursday 22 December, and in Springvale from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Wednesday 21 and Friday 23 December.

Christmas decorations are also fostering festive spirit in Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale.

This year there’ll be a new illuminated installation at Lonsdale and Clow streets, on the O’Brien Real Estate awning, to welcome people into central Dandenong.

The nine-metre tall reindeer and Santa will return to Harmony Square and decorated trees will pop up across the city.

Festive steps now lead into Harmony Square from Lonsdale Street, doves of peace adorn Douglas Street, there’s giant holly and presents in Palm Plaza in Dandenong, and a nativity scene in the library windows in Harmony Square.

A selfie with the decorations or entertainers will win one lucky snapper a $100 Dandenong Market voucher to spend on their Christmas feast.

Facebook entrants need to post a photo to www.facebook.com/greaterdandenong and encourage their friends to like the image.

Anchors aweigh for pirate party Somerfield residents are gearing up to celebrate a great year of community events with the last in the calendar - a Christmas party at Pirate Park on Sunday 11 December from 2pm to 4pm.

Expanded nativity paints a picture

By Casey Neill An ever-growing nativity scene has been drawing crowds to Dandenong North for 13 years.

Creator Wilson Fernandez is spurred on by sharing the true meaning of Christmas and spends hours maintaining and expanding the scenes.

He uses soils, clay, straw, plants and barks to give the nativity scene the most traditional and authentic impression of being in Christ-era Bethlehem.

The scenes feature handmade huts, stables, buildings, bridges, palaces, houses and temples surrounded by mountains, rocks, lakes and rivers.

They cover Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem and settling in a stable, the birth of Jesus Christ, an angel announcing the news, shepherds and wise men visiting, and more.

The nativity scene will be on display at St Elizabeth’s Parish Church, 107 Bakers Road, Dandenong North, from Monday 12 December to Friday 13 January.

It will be open from 9.45am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 7.30pm to 8pm Saturdays, and 9.30am to 10am, 11.30am to noon and 6.30pm to 7pm on Sundays.

Pinnacle of Christmas cheer here Club Noble handed out 940 presents to spread Christmas cheer to kids.

The annual event took place at the Moodemere Street reserve on Sunday 27 November and gifts went to children aged one to 12 years.

More than 1100 children attended alongside parents, grandparents and friends, filling the oval.

The day included rides and activities for all age groups from face painting to jumping castles, mini golf, a train ride, spinning cha-cha, bungierides, and the Pinnace of Terror.

Running races and egg tossing contests also kept the kids busy.

Santa arrived with help from Noble Park Fire Brigade and was immediately swamped by kids of all ages.

There were hamburgers and sausages, Devonshire tea, and free icy poles and drinks.

Club Noble is a not-for-profit community club with seven affiliated sporting clubs plus relationships with schools and other community groups.

Hundreds of people surround Santa.

The Dandenong South laundry took home the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Award from a cocktail awards night at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale on Wednesday 30 November.

Judges Phil Allen, Tom Flintoff, Lyndon Joss and Sandra George also deemed CLS worthy of the Large Business Award.

Chamber president Paul Broom said all 10 nominees, announced and celebrated at break-

Skin in the game Greencare Developments’ Iain Chaney made “a rare thank-you to a bank” during his acceptance speech at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

The Dandenong South business took home the Corporate Social Responsibility/Innovation Award from the Wednesday 30 November event at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale thanks to a nomination from the National Australia Bank.

“We’re really passionate about natural, environmentally-friendly products,” Mr Chaney said.

“For the past four years now we’ve really focused on skin care products and we’ve really developed a lot.”

Greencare Developments is a 26-year partnership between Mr Chaney, Bill Daft, Andrew

Chaney and Graham Smith.

They put their success down to knowing each other’s key strengths, meeting regularly to discuss the business and not proceeding unless everyone agrees.

They originally had a licence to manufacture sunscreen and developed the first sprayable version of the product.

They sold that arm in 2004 and developed Orange Power and other products that were “genuinely natural, not just claiming to be natural”.

Brands include Orange Power, Aware, Actzme and Organic Choice, plus contract manufacturing for companies including the Thank You group.

Company growth in the past two years has been as high as 35 per cent. Greencare employs 45 people, 20 of whom started in the past 18 months.

Charly makes the most of his work Youth Enterprise Award winner Charly Scott thanked his teachers, the chamber “and, of course, my mum, just for being mum”.

“A little bit of recognition goes very far,” the 21-year-old fabrication apprentice said when accepting the honour.

He took home the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce award ahead of fellow nominees Kyle Hillbrich and Brooke Fernandez at the Wednesday 30 November cocktail event at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale.

Charly is currently studying a certificate three and four in engineering, and attempting a welding certification most boilermakers wouldn’t achieve.

“There’s nothing better than being able to build or make something you can be proud of,” he said.

“In five years I see myself being well on my way to being a good tradesman that’s respected and wanted in my field.”

Charly said he saw a bright future for his career path because there were many different areas he could work and develop skills in.

Team is pressed into service

By Casey Neill “I’m supported by a fantastic team. The team makes the effort and I’m the one that gets the pic taken, so I love it.”

Cabrini Linen Service (CLS) managing director Ralf Pelz also told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards that he was proud to stand among the night’s other nominees.

He took home the Employment Award and the overall Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Award from the Wednesday 30 November cocktail event, held at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale.

He said everyone was a winner and “making this community stronger and stronger”.

“Employment is very important to us,” he said.

The business has doubled in size in three years, since moving to Dandenong South.

“We will continue to grow,” he said.

The not-for-profit provides specialist linen and laundry services to the Victorian healthcare, aged care and hospitality industries.

“We originally started our business in Melbourne in the basement of Cabrini Hospital,” he said.

The business moved to East Hawthorn but outgrew the space.

It relocated to Dandenong South with a mission to help the area’s long-term unemployed, atrisk youths, homeless and new migrants.

“I’m happy for people to work with us for a short time and move on to bigger and better pastures,” Mr Pelz said.

It now handles 200 tonnes of linen each week and employs more than 130 people.

“We’ve gone from strength to strength,” Mr Pelz said.

He attributed the success to maintaining the balance between mission and margin while respecting the environment.

“We’d expanded the bakery to a maximum. It was time to move onto something bigger,” Tian said.

They initially worked 9am to 5pm marketing their products, but moved their hours to a 1am so they could more effectively access the decision makers at bakeries.

They kept that up for 12 months, building foundations for the success that’s followed.

His accounting firm RJ Sanderson received the Large Business Award at a cocktail event at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale on Wednesday 30 November.

“Honestly, I thought ‘that can’t be us’ because we

only just started a mere ... 25 years ago,” he said.

“I’m a bit speechless.”

In 1993, Mr Sanderson was working in construction and doing tax returns from home.

His wife was pregnant with their third child and told him to sell his 300 or so clients or open a practice.

They mortgaged their house to the limit and he opened the first public accountants in Australia to offer on-the-spot refunds.

Within three months Mr Sanderson had doubled his ‘what if ’ business plan target and about 10 years in decided to open five more offices in three months.

There are now nine RJ Sanderson offices around Victoria - in Albury, Berwick, Cran-

bourne, Dandenong, Epping, Frankston, Pakenham, Wangaratta and Werribee.

Mr Sanderson believes that if he looks after his staff with money, relationships and training they will look after the clients.

Mr Sanderson said accountants were generally poor at marketing and prides himself on bucking that trend.

Dandenong-based south-east metropolitan region community work program manager Beverley Garratt has been involved with the justice department for almost 30 years and in community work for more than eight.

“Community work is the way that an offender gives restitution back to the community,” she said.

“However, if we can link it in, where they’re learning new skills ... it means we’ve got a better chance of reducing their risk of re-offending.

“We couldn’t do our job if we didn’t see that it had positive outcomes for the offenders and the community.

“We do our job because we understand that people can change and sometimes people just need to be given that opportunity to increase their self-esteem.

“Often people think they can’t learn and they’ve had a very negative experience with education.

“For a lot of people, this is a huge step.”

Ms Garratt said some had significant mental health and substance abuse issues.

“What we need to do is get them to engage with their community in a positive manner,” she said.

Three Dandenong Community Correctional Services projects were recognised at the Community Work Partnership Awards, held at the MCG on Thursday 17 November.

Community correction order recipient AnneMarie - not her real name - spoke at the event about how community work changed her life.

“How many people can get up and talk in front of 400 strangers at the MCG at an official event?”

Ms Garratt said.

“She brought people to tears.

“This was real life evidence of the benefits of community work.”

Water 2 All won the Educational Institution/ Educational Programs award, the Parks Victoria Green Team won the Environmental Sustainability Projects honour, and Healthy Pears - Healthy Body, Healthy Mind was named the best project in the south-east metropolitan region.

“It’s got realistic employment outcomes for offenders,” Ms Garratt said.

“We can’t be skilling them up in an area where they go to apply for the job, they do a criminal record check ... ” The Parks Victoria Green Team has been running since 2010 and involves pruning, litter pickup, painting and other maintenance.

“The offenders have been involved in so many tree planting projects,” Ms Garratt said.

“They’ve helped to create a forest out at Cardinia Creek parklands.

“They do tree planting work at Lysterfield.

We’ve done tree planting at Dandenong Police Paddocks.”

During this program we attended Fitted for Work which provided suitable clothing and included a make-up class for the ladies to prepare for their presentation at the launch of the recipe book.

This program encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and reflect on my achievements, the major one being able to speak publicly to a large group of people.

While it was nerve-wracking for me I gained the confidence to do this and it also gave me a new-found sense of “I can” and increased my selfesteem on a personal level, through believing in my own abilities.

Man’s threat to kill wife with knife A Burmese asylum seeker had no memory of threatening to kill his wife and mother of three while holding a kitchen knife to her throat, a court has heard.

The Noble Park man was drunk when he had arrived home on 18 November and aggressively banged on the door and window, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

When his wife let him inside, he banged a 30-centimetre hole in the wall.

When she told him she’d call the police, he threatened her with the knife.

She trembled with fear as he left the home with the knife in hand.

Later in the night he repeated his threat to his wife and was overheard by an interpreter.

“If you call the police, when I come back from the police station, I’ll cut your throat,” he allegedly said.

The accused’s lawyer told the court on 28 November that the man had a “limited memory” due to his extreme drunkenness that evening, but was very upset when he heard the allegations.

The man pleaded guilty to the assaults.

“He doesn’t usually consume alcohol,” the lawyer said.

“It was one of the rare occasions he drank.”

Since arriving in Australia in 2013, the man and his family had been under stress due to their uncertain future on a bridging visa, the lawyer said.

He was without known mental health issues or drug and alcohol dependencies.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen ordered the man’s exclusion from the family home as part of an interim intervention order - despite his wife’s wishes for him to live there.

“You really need to prove over time you’re not an ongoing risk to your family.”

The man was jailed for 10 days - which was already served in remand - and put on a 12 month community corrections order with conviction and judicial monitoring.

The husband and father of two died in the early hours of Tuesday 22 November after suffering an asthma attack caused by the freak weather event - that doubled emergency patient numbers at hospitals across Melbourne.

His brother Warren Leo established a Go Fund Me page online to raise $35,000 “to fill the shortfall of what the insurance doesn’t cover so that his loved ones can focus on remembering Samoan Gravy for the life he lived”.

“Our brother Clarence was a father, husband, son, and friend to many,” he wrote.

“We are overwhelmed with everyone’s love, support and offers of assistance.

“This is the easiest way in which you can provide your support.

“It is so sad that his life was lost and taken too soon.

“It has been such an amazing feeling to know that Samoan Gravy was loved so much and that he touched the hearts of so many people.”

More than 230 people have donated more than $28,000 so far.

Mr Leo was laid to rest at Springvale Botanical Cemetery on Monday 28 November following a service at Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Chapel in Narre Warren North.

Avocare fears Dandenong North’s needy could go hungry if the charity can’t find a new kitchen for its weekly meal.

A Christmas dinner on Wednesday 21 December will be its final at the Menzies Avenue kitchen due to a faulty grease trap.

Greater Dandenong Council’s community services director Mark Doubleday said Avocare was granted temporary use of the kitchen in 2013 to hold training programs for local residents and the programs had been very successful.

“Unfortunately the kitchen is no longer suitable for Avocare due to a regulatory issue,” he said.

“The council is working with Avocare to find a suitable alternative location to enable the training programs to continue.”

Avocare director Trish Keilty said that the council was decommissioning the kitchen because the grease trap was inadequate and the price tag to fix it was $60,000.

“They’ve been trying to work with me to find another kitchen,” she said.

“I haven’t found a solution yet.

“But I’d like to keep feeding those who’ve been loyal to Avocare over the last four years.

“They depend on it.”

Ms Keilty said that each Wednesday people started lining at 2pm for the 4pm meal and to collect a bag of groceries worth about $30 - all for a $1 coin.

Up to 130 people attend each week.

“Senior citizens are going to miss out on meals,” she said.

“Some of them take enough meals to keep them going for a few days during the week so they don’t have to cook.”

On other days of the week, the kitchen crew has cooked free meals for the seniors clubs, rooming house and emergency accommodation boarders and more.

The produce is “rescued” from Avocare’s warehouse, which supplies charities and soup kitchens across Melbourne’s south-east.

Afghan fare’s nod to the West

By Cam Lucadou-Wells What would you choose - the chicken parma or the traditional Afghan lamb shank qabuli?

Such is the bold menu that confronts diners at Samadi’z in Noble Park with traditional Afghan kebabs served with chips and green salad.

Or pits diametrically-opposed options such as mantu dumplings or bruchetta.

Interestingly, Assma Samadi says it’s the traditional food cooked by her father - known simply as ‘Mr Samadi’ - which is getting the most takers.

She says a lot of diners from the non-Afghan community are giving Mr Samadi’s offerings a go because it’s served in such a Western manner.

For 20 years, Mr Samadi has gathered a lofty reputation, catering for weddings and celebrations of up to 1000 people.

The recently-opened cafe-restaurant is the first time he shares with the masses his exquisite skills such as his beautifully crafted dumplings sauced

A third reincarnation of the famous sign, which dominated Dandenong’s skyline and greeted visitors to the town from Gippsland for 50 years, was officially unveiled at the Dandenong Market on Friday.

The neon sign was restored to Dandenong because of community demand.

“The sign carries great historic significance being one of the first animated advertising signs in Victoria,” Mr Cathie said.

“But it also reflected much more than this.

It symbolised a time of growth, of a company that helped keep Dandenong together during difficult times.”

Present at the unveiling were three-times mayor of Dandenong Mr Maurie Jarvis, who worked at the Gippsland Bacon Curing Company, official name of Dandy Bacon for 49 years.

The first sign was erected before WWII. It was replaced with the animated version which became so popular in the 1950s.

Meters’ time running out

By Casey Neill The fate of Springvale’s much-debated parking meters will be decided on 27 February.

When Greater Dandenong councillor Youhorn Chea was re-elected he vowed to ask his colleagues to remove the on-street and Warwick Avenue car park meters at their first official meeting.

“The residents don’t want the ticket machines in Springvale,” he said.

“I always put residents first.”

At the Monday 28 November meeting, he moved a motion requesting a report come to the Monday 27 February meeting for debate and a decision.

Cr Chea said that under Meeting Procedure Local Law he couldn’t move a motion directly seeking the meters’ removal.

“Given the financial costs and implications of the proposal it would require an officer report against which council could ultimately take a de-

cision,” he said.

“The parking ticket machines have been in place for some time and at the end of November 2016 a full year assessment will have been made on all aspects of the parking ticket machines.

“Sometime after that, a comprehensive report will be available.”

So Cr Chea requested that this report come to the 27 February meeting for debate and a decision on whether to continue with the meters.

The council endorsed the meters in April last year and Cr Chea unsuccessfully mounted several attempts to reverse the decision.

Cr Roz Blades told the meeting that the meters would drive shoppers out of ‘Sensational Springvale’.

“Twelve months later, you will be able to walk up the street and there will be no-one there because you’ve destroyed it,” she said.

A man armed with a knife threatened staff and stole cash from a Dandenong petrol station.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said the thief entered the Liberty Service Station about 12.10am on Tuesday 29 November.

Brandishing a knife, he demanded money from the staff member behind the counter.

The 21-year-old victim opened the till and the thief removed cash and fled on foot.

He was wearing a black-coloured balaclava and black hooded jumper.

Police officers and Canine Unit members attended shortly after but were unable to locate the thief.

Councillors gather for agreement Springvale South now has an official cultural and worship precinct.

At their Monday 28 November meeting, Greater Dandenong councillors supported adopting a trial policy for the western side of Springvale Road, between Clarke Road and Hume Road.

It means the council will consider the area a preferred location for places of assembly or worship when assessing planning permit applications.

Officers recommended a 36-month trial and an assessment on whether the policy should be officially incorporated into the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme.

Cr Sean O’Reilly said it was “great to see the idea that I had and council supported in October 2013 come along to this policy that we have in front of us today”.

“This precinct has been growing organically and sometimes in leaps and bounds,” he said.

“This formalises council’s acknowledgement that this area has a specific type of use.

“Is there anywhere else in the world where you will see Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese places of faith existing side by side, operating harmoniously in a multicultural community?”

The precinct is already home to several places of worship and assembly, and council officers said it could become home to several existing groups elsewhere in the city that have outgrown their premises.

It could also become a cultural destination like Little India and the Afghan Bazaar in Dandenong, although poor public transport would need to be addressed.

Paramedic tells of confronting scenes at bank fire

“I hadn’t seen that before, myself,” she said.

The 29-year-old has been a paramedic for the past eight years.

“This would be the largest scene that I’ve attended in my career so far,” she said.

“All scenes like that with many people around can be quite confronting, and knowing where to start is difficult sometimes when there are so many people looking for your help.

“You can’t immediately help everybody. There’s a part of you that’s a bit disappointed.”

Rohingya asylum seeker Nur Islam, 21, allegedly set the Springvale Road Commonwealth Bank and himself alight about 11.30am, injuring more than 20 people.

“It’s not good to see people who are suffering and in pain as a result of the burns they’ve received,” she said.

“It’s a distressing scene.

“It was really great to see how much involvement all the other services had, as well as the community response.

“The CFA were doing what they needed to do in order to get everyone out.

“The police were doing everything they could to keep people in an area we could look after them.

“Everyone’s working to try to achieve the same result.”

She said paramedics received training in handling such high-casualty incidents.

“I think that the patients had all left the scene somewhere between one hour and 30 minutes and one hour and 40 minutes.

“The people who were waiting to go to hospital, I could see towards the end that they were doing a really good job of supporting one another.

“They’ve experienced the whole incident.

“I personally didn’t have to go through being exposed to a fire in the way that that happened for them.

“They’ve got one another. You can’t entirely understand anything that they’ve been through.”

They intercepted the 19-year-old travelling west on the Dingley Bypass about 5pm on Sunday 27 November.

Moorabbin Highway Patrol members allegedly clocked the driver at 147km/h in an 80km zone.

An unlicensed 23-year-old woman was also in the car.

Police impounded the driver’s Ford sedan and expect to charge him on summons with travelling at a dangerous speed, exceeding the speed limit and being an unaccompanied learner.

Lifestyle ends up behind bars

By Aneeka Simonis A Longwarry accounts worker who embezzled $299,000 from her Dandenong construction company to fund a lifestyle she thought she was entitled to has been sentenced to jail.

Kerrie Michelle Van der Heyden, 38, spent two-and-a-half years falsifying invoices paid by her employer, Hartcon Australia Pty Ltd, to a personal bank account until she was caught redhanded in April last year.

The County Court of Victoria heard Heyden forged 19 invoices, totalling $299,000, between 19 October 2012 and 17 March 2015, up until she was caught in April trying to sneak through two invoices totalling $18,000.

Heyden was sentenced to two years and seven months jail on Friday 18 November after pleading to three charges of obtaining a financial advantage by deception and one charge of attempting to obtain a financial advantage by deception.

The court heard Heyden was employed by Hartcon Australia Pty Ltd in May 2011, and was promoted two months later to a position which required her to authorise invoice payments.

All falsified documents appeared to have been lodged by a regular supplier, Starjan Pty Ltd, and were paid into a personal bank account operated

by Heyden.

His Honour Judge Dean said Heyden was in a

“significant position of trust”, and that her offending only came to light by chance.

In an affidavit, Heyden told her employer-embezzled funds had been spent on home renovations, wedding and honeymoon costs and general living expenses.

The court heard no money has been returned to the Dandenong company, with all costs borne by its insurer.

“In my opinion, your offending was motivated by a desire to fund in part a lifestyle that you believed that you were entitled to and, accordingly, your moral culpability must be regarded as significant,” Judge Dean said.

Heyden’s counsel suggested a community corrections order would be suitable for Heyden’s offending.

However, Judge Dean said the offending required serious sentencing, and questioned if Heyden understood the seriousness of her ongoing offending.

“I do not believe that you truly understand the seriousness of your crimes and the extent of your persistent criminal dishonesty.”

Heyden grew up on a Longwarry farm, and spent many years actively involved in the community.

She was employed by a Bendigo construction company at the time of sentencing.

Heyden will be eligible for parole 12 months into her sentence.

Seat stands as a tribute to founders A bench seat will serve as a useful tribute to Shalimar Park Pre-School’s founders.

The Dandenong North centre unveiled the chair at 40th birthday celebrations on Saturday 26 November.

Original committee members and today’s leaders shared the bench for several photographs on the day.

A plaque on the bench reads “Dedicated to the original founders of Shalimar Park Pre-School”.

Jan and Terry Flynn were founding committee members who campaigned for the kindergarten, and attended the celebrations.

“Two blokes knocked on our door” to enlist help to establish Shalimar Park, Ms Flynn said.

“There were five of us to start with,” she said.

“I was the first enrolments officer. I was working full-time back then.”

She said the kinder doors opened during the last term of 1976.

“I didn’t have children but we were planning to have a family in the next few years,” she said.

“My husband used to write the newsletter and I used to type it, and there was a bloke around the corner who had a printer who used to print it for us and we’d put it in letterboxes.”

Also at the event were kinder teacher and former student Jessica Battershill, and her teacher Lena Saracino.

“I have fun memories of playing outside and the teachers always being very positive and helping,” Ms Battershill said.

“I always felt very welcomed. I had a really good sense of belonging.

“There are parents I went to kinder with who are bringing their kids in.”

Ms Saracino left the centre about two years ago to help look after her grandkids.

“The centre’s certainly come a long way,” she said.

“We’ve always had some really amazing committee members who’ve been very dedicated to keeping the kindergarten running and on track.”

Rammed cop’s shock

By Casey Neill Leading Senior Constable Darren Barnard had one foot on solid ground when a driver rammed a stolen SUV into his police car in Dandenong North.

“It was a bit of a shock. I didn’t really know what to think at the time,” he said.

“It was the first time I’d been rammed - I’d had some close calls but never been hit like that.”

The Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol member has worked the road policing beat for 24 years.

He was lucky to escape injury in the Wednesday 26 October incident, which occurred about 11.20pm on Brady Road.

“It was a fair impact. I thought they weren’t going to be able to repair the car but they did,” Leading Sen Const Barnard said.

“The front of the vehicle suffered an impact of about 50 centimetres.

“It didn’t activate the airbags which I suspect was his intention to start off with.”

Police believe the man who was behind the wheel stole the gold-coloured Mercedes SUV from T and A Auto Repairs in Park Road, Cheltenham, on Saturday 22 October.

The Mercedes was in for a service when raiders drove another car through the garage’s roller door to free it.

Police believe the same man used the vehicle to steal petrol from a Skye service station on Monday 24 October.

Leading Sen Const Barnard and his partner spotted the car on Stud Road and noted its front and back number plates didn’t match each other or the vehicle.

“Initially we pulled up alongside the driver to see if we could identify him before we intercepted him, half expecting that he would drive off,” he said.

“We weren’t able to get a real good look at him due to the nature of his vehicle being a much larger four-wheel drive and us sitting in a sedan.

“We attempted to intercept the vehicle. It looked like it was going to pull over.

“We had to activate our lights because he stopped in the middle of an intersection.

“We moved to the side of the road, and I had one foot out the door and he engaged reverse gear before I could get back in the car and he rammed us.

“I was knocked into the seat but I didn’t sustain any injuries.”

The impact put the car out of action so Leading Sen Const Barnard could do little but watch the driver flee the scene.

He said the man had shown a “blatant disregard for police and members of the public”, and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

Police found the Mercedes abandoned at Parkmore Shopping Centre in Keysborough on Friday 28 October.

CCTV footage showed the alleged rammer driving it into the car park at speed about 10am and then loading up a shopping trolley with belongings from the car.

The driver was perceived to be of European appearance and aged in his late twenties or early thirties, and he was wearing a black baseball cap.

Investigators released a facial composite of a man who might be able to assist with their inquiries.

They also released a likeness of a tattoo and an armband similar to the driver’s.

Car thieves hit a driver in the face with a bat and dragged a woman from the passenger seat by her hair in a Springvale carjacking.

The victims, a 28-year-old man from Parkdale and a 29-year-old woman from Elsternwick, were in their parked Subaru in a side street off Police Road - either Balfour or Galos place about 10.30pm on Saturday 19 November.

They’d been there about 30 minutes when at least two people approached, one opening the driver’s door and the other the front passenger door.

The man in the driver’s seat told police that a man hit him in the face with a bat or similar then dragged him from the car and further assaulted him.

The attacker then demanded the victim hand over his keys, and he complied.

Meanwhile, a second man dragged the passenger from the car by her hair.

She ran to a 7-Eleven across the road to seek assistance, and the male victim soon followed.

There they called an ambulance.

Their attackers, described as Asian or Indian in appearance, left the scene in the Subaru.

The male victim told police there was a second vehicle at the scene, but only saw its headlights.

Stripped car in flames A suspicious fire completely destroyed what was left of a stripped Holden sedan in Dandenong South.

Fire crews were called to Glasscocks Road about 10.15pm on Friday 25 November and extinguished the fire.

Police urged anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Charity cheque for hospital from Keysborough kids Haileybury’s head of early learning Lisa Christopher said the school was exceptionally proud of the children and their families’ interest, commitment and support to the fund-raising project.

“We chose Monash Children’s Hospital as one of the children in pre-prep has a sister who attended the hospital last year for treatment for cancer,” she said.

“The children have asked questions, offered ideas and worked diligently on their artwork in support of the ELC fundraising effort.

Keysborough students raised more than $5000 for the Monash Children’s Hospital.

To raise the cash, Haileybury’s Early Learning Centre (ELC) donated gold coins when attending events and created artworks that were auctioned to parents.

The 88 students, aged three to five years, also created a large canvas that they gifted to the hospital.

Monash Children’s Hospital’s head of paediatrics Dr Cathy McAdams visited the children on Wednesday 23 November to accept the cheque and art canvas.

Next year the hospital will move into a new, dedicated site in Clayton so the $5047.95 donation was much-appreciated.

A leader in establishing services for Dandenong’s Aboriginal community has been added to the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll.

Barbara Walker, who died in 2012, was among 10 inductees at a ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday 30 November.

The Honour Roll celebrates the wide ranging achievements of Aboriginal people, past and present, has been running for six years and is on permanent display in the Victorian Parliament.

Mrs Walker’s involvement with welfare and education services, including promoting early childhood education, contributed significantly to the lives of those in her community.

The Wemba Wemba Elder was born in 1927 in Barham, New South Wales.

She was one of 10 children, finished her education at Grade 3 and at 13 started work as a domestic hand on a sheep station.

She married Kevin Walker at age 18, started married life in Echuca, but soon moved to a home at Moonahcullah.

They had five boys and five girls. Mrs Walker gave birth to most on the Deniliquin maternity hospital verandah due to a segregation policy.

The family moved to Doveton in 1961, when Moonahcullah closed, seeking greater opportunities for work and education.

Mr Walker soon secured a position with the Gas and Fuel Corporation in Dandenong, but Mrs Walker found the adjustment to urban life difficult.

She recalled that she would sit in her house looking out at the nearby hills and “yearn to be back in a place where I could go for walks and get mushrooms”.

In the early 1970s, in Dandenong the Walkers and other Aboriginal families held meetings in their home, including the Terrick, Harrison, Blow and Charles families.

They were concerned that the growing Koori community needed better support and access to services in their area.

They formed the Dandenong and District Aborigines Association with the Victorian Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs.

In 1975 the organisation was incorporated and

The group received government funding to help develop programs that would address unemployment and life skills in the Koori community in Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam, Noble Park, a developing Endeavour Hills, and as far afield as Healesville.

Mrs Walker was the first voluntary secretary of the co-operative and regularly hosted committee meetings in her home.

DDACSL formed a close association was with the Gunai Lodge hostel, later renamed the Roy Harrison hostel.

The hostel was established to meet the needs of young Aboriginal men coming to Dandenong from Gippsland for apprenticeships, job training and educational purposes.

From the mid-1970s the Walkers were members of the hostel’s Special Purpose Committee Mr Walker as president and Mrs Walker as executive secretary.

In the early 1970s, the Victorian Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs employed Mrs Walker as a field officer - the first woman in the state to take on the role.

She dealt with finance and housing and worked alongside Wayne Atkinson and Alick Jackomos in Melbourne’s south-west to improve the lives of Aboriginal families through access to services.

From 1973 until the late 1980s when she retired, Mrs Walker worked for the Doveton Uniting Church as a kindergarten assistant.

She encouraged Aboriginal children in the Doveton area to attend the kindergarten and worked to promote the importance of early childhood education.

Mrs Walker was a mother to 10 children, 35 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren (and counting) and was described as a warm and generous person.

She spent her retirement years back near Moonahcullah at Elimdale in New South Wales.

RESIDENTS SEARCHING FOR ANOTHER SLICE THREE years ago Virginie and Fabrice Jacquin and their two daughters Angelina and Tiffany became some of the first residents of Berwick Waters, a development by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia.

“We were only the second house on the estate so we pretty much saw it grow,” Virginie said.

Biscuit booster

By Casey Neill A Noble Park manufacturer will create 12 new full-time jobs thanks to a $300,000 boost.

Premier Daniel Andrews visited Kez’s Kitchen on Thursday 1 December to announce the funding.

“We’re investing in the south-east to help businesses diversify into new markets, to help workers transition into new jobs and to help our local communities survive and grow,” he said.

The cash will allow the family-owned manufacturer to invest $1.5 million in new equipment.

It will help the company to increase its production of premium biscuits, cereals and snack bars, reduce waste and grow internationally.

As well as taking on 12 new full-time workers, Kez’s will up-skill its existing team.

The business started in 1991 with Kez Ludski and her mother baking biscuits in the family home and selling them to local cafes.

Today managing director and Kez’s brother Michael Carp owns and runs the business after

walking away from his job as a lawyer to hop on board in 1994.

The kitchen moved to its 45,000 square foot purpose-built bakery on Princes Highway in 1999 and today employs more than 100 people.

The cash came from the State Government’s Manufacturing Program.

Companies can apply for up to $500,000 under the program to invest in new technologies and processes that will create jobs and increase productivity.

The Journal has previously spoken to Kez’s Kitchen about its Free and Naked bars which meet lofty, guilt-free standards - a four-star health rating, cold-pressed, and nude of added sugar, gluten, wheat, GMO ingredients, sulfite, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

Mr Carp said the company doubled its output when it started making gluten-free foods such as cereals in 2007.

He said the company completed extensive research with domestic consumers and emerging overseas trends to find points of difference.

Dandenong resident Amelia got sucked in by a scammer and is warning others to watch out for a door-to-door fraudster.

She alleged that a woman knocked at her front door, told her she lived in the next street and needed a loan of money for medication because her asthmatic child had just been taken away in an ambulance.

“I’m a social worker so I’m usually pretty onto these things, but I got scammed,” she said.

A suspicious Amelia followed the woman to several other addresses, including a retirement village, and called police but the woman was gone by the time officers arrived.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite get that,” was iPhone guide Siri’s response to a question from councillor Maria Sampey at the Monday 28 November Greater Dandenong Council meeting.

Another councillor hurriedly silenced the device as laughs broke out in the chamber.

A Dandenong man claimed he was drink-driving to escape racist abuse during a night out in Geelong.

The man, who blew 0.167 and had never held a driving licence, claimed his passenger was more drunk than him and unable to drive, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

After pulling the man’s car over, police observed the accused climbing out of the drivers’ seat into the back of the vehicle - but the passenger stayed in their seat.

The man had been disqualified from driving after a high-reading drink-driving conviction in 2015.

The judge noted the man’s excuses would be no comfort if he had killed someone while driving so drunk.

The man was put on a six-month community corrections order including 50 hours of unpaid work and alcohol counselling, as well as a road trauma awareness program.

He was disqualified from driving for 32 months.

International help’s extra mile

By Casey Neill Keysborough students are going the extra mile to support their community with help from Rotary.

Springvale 14-year-old Caitlyn Naitoko is the inaugural Interact Club of Keysborough president.

The Keysborough College student and 20 of her peers will work on local and international projects with support from the Rotary Club of Noble Park-Keysborough.

“It gives an opportunity for us to work within the community and get involved in the community more and be an example to those around us,” she said.

“It really puts some of my personal values, such as service, into action.”

Teacher and community partnerships co-ordinator David Pfeiffer said the school wanted to improve the opportunities for its students.

Committee members will complete a leadership training day to enable them to run the club without teacher assistance.

He said Interact was about tapping into the energy and talent of young people and helping them to develop their own potential as leaders.

Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan, on behalf of Mayor Jim Memeti, told the students that he’d attended the predecessor to the college’s acacia campus, Chandler High School.

He also has an 18-year association with Noble Park Rotary that included time with Rotaract, an offshoot for members aged 18 to 30.

“I know how much Interact is going to do for you,” he said.

Cr Kirwan said taking part helped him to develop the leadership skills and community connections that led to his election in 2012 and reelection in October.

“I never would have had those skills were it not for Rotaract,” he said.

Rotary Club of Noble Park-Keysborough president Ron Damon said he, too, started out with Rotaract. He joined in 1975, aged 21.

“I had such wonderful times in that organisation for young people,” he said.

“You’ll love it and you’ll make lifetime friends.”

Mr Damon presented badges and certificates to the members and welcomed them “to the worldwide fellowship of Interact”.

ter joining Rotary about six years ago.

He assists Interact groups throughout the region, and explained that the name stemmed from international action.

Interact involves 460,000 students in 208 countries, and he can help the Keysborough group to connect with any one of them.

Keysborough College principal John Baston said the students would do the school proud.

“They’ve got such sensible heads on their shoulders,” he said.

“Sometimes they want to do things in the community but don’t know how to go about it.”

Mr Baston said this was one way to give them the opportunity.

“One of the things that we really have on our books is a priority to get our students to engage more with the community,” he said.

By Nicholas Creely After being overlooked in Friday 25 November’s AFL draft, Dandenong Stingrays utility Mitch McCarthy has been taken by Collingwood in the rookie draft held on 28 November.

It was initially speculated that the youngster would have been taken in the third-round of the draft but due to the depth of the draftees was unable to gain a senior spot.

The former 19-year-old basketballer, who is a late bloomer to football, was taken with pick seven after an injury riddled but promising season at TAC Cup level.

McCarthy only returned to Australia at Christmas 2015 and was invited to attend the Dandenong Stingrays program.

The Mt Eliza product was nominated by St Kilda as a Category B rookie if overlooked, but will now head over to the Holden Centre to begin his journey as a Pie. After injury plagued him in his comeback year to the game, AFL recruiters saw enough attributes they liked.

In his 2016 season, McCarthy represented Vic Country and the Dandenong Stingrays, showcasing athleticism and genuine upside.

He is expected to be developed in his first couple of seasons at AFL level, and from there is seen as an exciting prospect ready to explode in the ruck.

Collingwood recruiter Dominic Milesi explained the selection of the Stingray to fans on the club’s website.

“Mitch is a 195cm, 19-year-old who missed the second half of the year through injury,” he said.

“He’s a very versatile player who was used in the ruck, but we believe he has scope to play as a key defender or key forward going forward.

By Nicholas Creely It’s not surprising that 12-year-old Ayden Johnston idolises Australian golfing legend Jason Day. In fact, the two have quite a few similarities - they both started playing golf at the same age, and they are both driven athletes determined to get to the top of the golfing world.

And for Ayden, just three weeks ago, on Sunday 13 November, his golfing star shone once again.

Not only did the Rowville student head across to South Australia for the School Sport Victoria Gold 12 years and under state championships, but he was also part of a successful team that on the Craig Parry Shield for two years running.

Over Ayden’s four day championship he finished with an impressive nett total of 150.

Ayden, who lives in Mitcham with his family, began his golfing journey at around the age of six and loved the putting side of the game before getting into mainstream golf.

He said the influence of Day and his family has been a driving factor.

“I like golf because there is always a new challenge or problem that you are being faced with or put yourself into or find yourself in, and you need to find the best or easiest way out with the reward a low cost of shots if it doesn’t work,” Ayden said.

“I like Jason Day because he is Australian and he only started play golf at a young age and he is one of the best golfers in the world at the moment and I started earlier than him and if I do what he did, who knows how good I could be.

“My Dad and family supported me and would drive me to training, to the golf courses, to gym before school and after.

“In the long run, if I become a pro I will remember what they did for me and thank them and give them some of my winnings and get them each one thing they have always wanted.”

They will both now join the club that is aligned to Casey, after the Demons closely monitored the pair throughout the VFL season.

It is expected that the duo will push their way onto the senior list at some stage in 2017.

McInerney was one of few VFL players invited to the combine, where clubs were drawn to his impressive natural athleticism.

He has only been playing VFL for a short amount of time, after missing out on his draft year, went to play local football before being taken by the Scorpions.

Smith, 25, is a particularly heart-warming story. Despite being overlooked time and time again, the man nicknamed ‘The Bull’, for his strong character and competitiveness, kept pushing himself, and has finally got some reward for years of great form.

It’s no rest for the wicked for these young men, who will be thrown straight into the deep end, ready to begin fulfilling their lifelong dreams.

It comes after other Stingrays pair Josh Battle (St Kilda) and Myles Poholke (Adelaide) were picked up in the draft three days prior.

Unfortunately for the Stingrays, a raft of youngsters, including Bailey Morrish, Sam Fowler and Mason De Witt, were unable to secure a spot at an AFL club.

It is expected that the trio will transition into VFL football next season, in a bid to keep their name in the spotlight for AFL clubs.

Elliott striking up for change The Melbourne Renegades have lost the services of Dandenong legend Sarah Elliott who has signed with the Adelaide Strikers in the second season of the WBBL. The 34-year-old former international, who plays her cricket with Dandenong in the Women’s Premier competition, is set to add vital experience to the Strikers’ line-up, with her off-spin and aggressive batting strongly suited to Twenty20 cricket.

She captained the Melbourne Renegades in the inaugural season of the WBBL last year, but the club and Elliot were unable to reach terms, allowing the Strikers to swoop on the valuable veteran.

Elliot has had a strong start to the season for the Vic Spirit this season, making a fantastic century against ACT not long ago.

Andrea McCauley, the Adelaide Strikers’ coach, said the signing of Elliott was about depth, and is pleased about what she can add to the exciting squad they have compiled.

The WBBL opening weekend takes place on 9 and 10 December at North Sydney Oval in a carnival-style format, in which all eight WBBL teams will be present.

The Adelaide Strikers’ first game will be against the Melbourne Renegades at 1.45pm at North Sydney Oval 1 on Saturday 10 December.

The match will be broadcast live on Ten, while every WBBL match will be live streamed on cricket.com.au and Facebook.

No beauty pageant but Bears bank the points

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW It’s beginning to enter that period before Christmas, where wins are pivotal, and losses......well they are really costly.

Day two of the round’s Turf 1 action was thrilling, as reigning premiers Cranbourne continue to assert their dominance once again.

The Eagles are flying, and their outright victory was simply brutal.

Narre Warren’s horrendous season continues, while North Dandenong have hit back, after a sparkling century from Caleb Millman, who played his first match in Turf 1 this season.

And then there is Springvale South, who continue to win and put pressure on the top. It’s beginning to shape as anyone’s flag for the taking, in what is one of the most hotly contested Turf 1 seasons in memory.

BERWICK v DINGLEY It wasn’t pretty, and sometimes it doesn’t need to be, but Berwick (181) finally toppled Dingley (163 and 0/16) on day two of their clash at Arch Brown Reserve.

After the Dingoes set the Bears 164 to win, they resumed the day’s play precariously three wickets down with over 90 runs to win.

And the contest was hard fought, as Jasenthuliyana Chathuranga (6/44) threatened to tear the game apart with a brutal and unflinching spell of bowling.

Chathuranga claimed vital wickets throughout, including reigning club champion Ryan Crawford, who was starting to get going after a slow and steady 20.

In what was a glorious introduction to summer, the Bears struggled scoring in general, and with each passing over it seemed that a stunning upset was on the cards.

And that’s just exactly what the Dingoes have been able to do in Turf 1 this season - squeezing the life out of batting sides and being competitive and spirited.

The Dingoes have been a surprise packet this season, after coming up through the Turf 2 ranks, with their grit and endeavor noticeable in every performance this season.

But the Bears late-order quartet of Crawford (20), Ryan Williamson (15), Jarrod Goodes (27) and James Wilcock (14) slowly but surely saw them home in what could be pivotal come the pointy end of the season.

At one point in the run-chase, the Bears sat uncomfortably at 6/101, with Nathan Pilon (0), Adam Watson (28) and century machine Jarrod Armitage (5) back in the sheds.

Opening batsman Darren de Souza (38) was impressive once again and played with composure beyond his years, while skipper Goodes followed on from his explosive half-century the week previous to guide his side home.

Goodes is once again enjoying a productive season, and his batting has been a real feature of the Bears new-look side.

Dingoes bowler Calvin Barlow was impressive once again. 162712 ers, Andrew Dalby, Calvin Barlow and Matthew Hague were all solid despite the loss and can take much confidence in pushing a premiership fancy.

In what is going to be a closely fought out top four on the Turf 1 ladder, the Bears simply lifted when it mattered, and will take great confidence in knowing that when their stars fail to cash in, there are others waiting in the wings.

Forty gives bang for Buck The Jason Thompson-trained Buck Forty delivered one of his more impressive performances when taking out his heat of the Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Whelped in January 2014, the black dog out of Buck Fever-Fancy Jaffa was slow to begin then motored through the field and took control approaching the home turn, before accelerating away to win by an increasing eight lengths in 34.08 - the fastest heat win of the night.

Handler on the night, and wife of Thompson, Seona, was ecstatic with the run.

“I was worried after he was slow to begin but in hindsight it was probably the best thing for him as he was able to drop to the fence,” Seona said.

“To power to the line the way he did and to run that time coming from last was unbelievable. Honestly, we think that was one of the best win he’s ever had.”

If Buck Forty is to win next week’s Sir John Dillon Memorial final, he will reach $370,000 in prize money - a substantial amount with only two group race wins next to his name.

“He’s worked hard to earn the prize money he has - he hasn’t won a heap of big races, he’s raced so consistently for a long time. We’re super proud of him,” Seona said.

The kennel will also have Aeroplane Tommy engaged in Thursday night’s final after running third in his heat behind two of the outsiders of the field in Dash of Rose ($18.50) and Mepunga Rosie ($19.20).

“Tommy does need things to go his way but I thought he was a bit stiff on Thursday night,” Seona said.

“He doesn’t have the same traits as Buck Forty but it was still a super run and he has earned his spot in the final.”

Aeroplane Tommy and Buck Forty have drawn well in next Thursday’s final in boxes two and three respectively.

“We’re happy with where they’re drawn - all the speed is on their outside so they should be able to find the rail,” she said.

“We couldn’t be happier, though you can’t go into group races with too much confidence -you always need a bit of luck.”

Rangers rebound to eventually snuff out the Flames

By Nick Creely The Dandenong Jayco Rangers are well and truly secure at the top of the WNBL ladder after securing a tense and dramatic victory over Sydney Uni Flames at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night.

It was a horrific start for the Rangers, who were down by as much as 13 points in the first half, before the crowd lifted and their fluent game style began to creep back in.

The Rangers were down 11-22 after just five minutes of court action, but eventually regained the offensive side of their game, wrestling back control to narrow down the deficit by the last quarter.

Despite the Flames coming hard at the Rangers in the last quarter, the home crowd saw them take away the game in one fell swoop.

Eventually, the Rangers were able to put together a strong and dominant final term 23-13, to elevate themselves as the competition’s heavyweights.

With 7:01 remaining on the clock, star import

Ally Malott rose, and from there, the Rangers never relinquished their lead.

It was truly an all-round effort from the Rangers, with four players scoring in double-digits, with Mallott’s 22 points a major highlight. Sara Blicavs, Steph Cumming and Amelia Todhunter were all strong, with the latter pulling down an incredible 11 rebounds in a best on court display, after starting off the bench.

For the Flames, Belinda Snell was dominant with 27 points.

The Rangers won the rebound battle once again 40-33, and also outscored the Flames on the paint, 38-26. But it was their major boost off the bench that proved the winner, with 23 points coming from the second unit.

Todhunter spoke about the challenge of Sydney, but was just happy to get away with the win.

“Sydney brought their A game, but we chipped away at it,” she said.

Assistant coach John White said that the issue was obvious in the first half, and was impressed with the team’s response to the poor start.

“It was pretty obvious that our defense was probably lacking in the first half, and we challenged them in the half-time break - we changed up a few things and it seemed to work for us I guess,” he said.

The impressive win leaves the Rangers with an 8-3 win-loss ledger, and a decent platform to launch into the second half of the season.

Sydney have now fallen to 5-4 for the season.

Andrew’s love bowled them over

By Nicholas Creely “What happens on the field stays on the field” is a simple yet touching saying.

It means to be competitive in the heat of battle - but when the day has ended and the umpires flick off the bails to signal stumps, it is truly about being kind to others and putting life into perspective.

In the life of the late Andrew Pellissier, a Lynbrook Cricket Club champion, who passed away on 8 November 2016, at the age of just 47, this saying, truly defines a life that impacted on a lot of people.

‘Pellis’, as he was affectionately known by at his beloved Lakers, joined the club in 2007/08 and immediately became one of the most likeable and respected figures around the traps of the Dandenong District Cricket Association.

He went on to play 95 games at the club, captaining numerous sides over the journey, including the club’s E Grade team this season.

But there was more to the left-handed batsman and highly regarded wicket-keeper than met the eye.

He was apparently a star bowler - but only in his eyes!

The four wickets he once claimed in a match truly proved the adage that “cricket is a funny game” because his mates say he “couldn’t bowl”.

Sure he made over 1300 runs for the club, and claimed more than 50 dismissals with the gloves, but his teammates spoke about his loyalty, his passion and his general loveable nature.

He was described as the kind of bloke that would nurture the young players coming into the club and was quick to give them advice and welcome them.

He was often late to training, not because he avoided the cricket, but because he loved nothing more than getting to the rooms to enjoy the banter that cricket clubs are famous for.

Lakers club-president Jason Bishop spoke glowingly about his impact on the club, citing his

“prankster” nature, in which he would often take selfies on people’s mobiles, or hide empty cans around someone’s house - but also his incredible passion for music was well-noted.

Bishop said that Andrew was one of the first blokes to offer a greeting with a handshake and a “how you going mate?”, but on the field, he was the master of the understated one-liner, but his sledges were often directed at his teammates,

not the opposition.

He described Andrew as a loving father to Cam, Tan and Josh and husband to Kim, and this loving nature transgressed through every individual he encountered.

So much so, that in the week after Andrew’s passing, all the clubs that played Lynbrook allowed the club to farewell him on the field, prompting DDCA secretary Ray Nicholls to say

“it shows that this great game of ours can still bring people together during a time of grieving and the respect shown is gratifying”.

Amazingly, his son Cameron is now the captain of the E Grade side, in what is a touching sentiment in his father’s honour.

For Pellis, the bails have been flicked off and it is now stumps, but the legacy left will live on forever.

Highly regarded Rangers assistant coach John White has signed on as the 2017 Dandenong Basketball SEABL Women’s Head Coach.

White, who is currently entrenched within the Rangers program in the WNBL, under the tutelage of Larissa Anderson, steps up in his bid to further advance the development of some of Dandenong’s most talented female basketballers.

White told Dandenong Basketball that he is over the moon and ready to take the opportunity as he looks to lead the Rangers to their sixth championship in eight years.

“Dandenong has been renowned for its successful player development pathway from the junior programs through to our WNBL Jayco Rangers and I am grateful to the organisation for allowing me to take on this role to continue to provide opportunities for women’s sport,” he said.

“I’d like to thank Larissa Anderson, Trish Fallon and Graeme Allen for their support and I am looking forward to building on the success of past

White’s coaching experience has been extensive. Before coming to join the Rangers he was

an assistant at the Melbourne Tigers in the NBL, he had a stint at Knox Basketball, was Director of Coaching at the Camberwell Dragons, an assistant coach of the Sandringham Sabres SEABL team, and has also been heavily involved at Vic Metro level with the Under 15 Girls.

He has also coached Caulfield Grammar Senior Boys to the Australian Schools National Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

Elite Teams Administrator for Dandenong Basketball Trish Fallon is confident White can continue to build success and continue the legacy left by championship winning coach Jeremi Moule, who has stepped aside for work and family reasons.

“The DBA are looking forward to having John White on board as our newly appointed SEABL Women’s Head Coach.

“John is a well-respected coach who brings an abundance of passion, enthusiasm and knowledge, and we look forward to working with John in continuing a very successful SEABL Women’s program into 2017 and beyond,” Fallon said.

By Ewan Kennedy The Infiniti Q70 has refreshed styling front and rear as well as in the cabin as well as improved NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) features that add to the upmarket feel.

The Infiniti Q70 S Premium grade we have just tested also has suspension changes which not only make it smoother and quieter but also add to the sporty feeling.

This latest model continues to be low slung and attractive, with large guards, particularly at the rear that give it the sort of look that it’s ready to leap at the road.

For 2017 the double-arch grille has a more three-dimensional look with what the designers call a ‘waved-mesh finish’, made to stand out even more by having chrome surround. The front bumper has been redone, with integrated foglights.

The bootlid has been flattened and the rear bumper slimmed down to make the rear of the Q70 look wider and lower.

Our S Premium model had its rear bumper finished in high-gloss black paint.

Large 20-inch alloy wheels in a double-spoke design certainly add to the sporty look.

Inside, the big Infiniti continues to have a high-quality look with wood accents and leather trim. The front seats are heated and have 10-way power adjustment, including two-way lumbar support.

Power goes to the rear wheels through a sevenspeed automatic transmission with manual overrides. Solid magnesium paddle shifters are a feature of the Q70 S Premium.

The Infiniti Drive Mode Selector provides four modes - Standard, Eco, Sport or Snow.

In Sport the Infiniti has measured the 0-100km/h time a 6.2 seconds so this big sports

The front seats are large and comfortable and the aforementioned multiple adjustments make for secure travel.

The rear seat is good for legroom and can carry three adults without too much trouble. Two, with a child is a better way of doing it, though.

The Q70 S Premium has the Active Noise Control feature, which monitors cabin noise levels and generates ‘cancelling waves’ to make travel almost eerily quiet on smooth roads.
