If you’re keen to get outdoors and soak up some Vitamin D, the picturesque Yarra River is the perfect spot to enjoy a splash. Located behind the main strip of Warburton, beneath the trees, the Yarra River is the place for some fun in the sun. Water spots can get busy during the summer months, so for a quieter experience, walk along the Yarra River away from the main street to find a more relaxing spot. Travelling up the Warburton Highway, a short drive to Seville will take you to the Seville Water Play Park. Located next to the Seville Recreation Reserve on Monbulk Road, the jets get turned on during the summer months for ultimate water play. The park is free to enter and has plenty of shaded areas, picnic tables and even a playground. Up in the hills, the recently renovated Olinda Pool is perfect for recreational swimming to cool down this summer. It’s much loved by locals and is an outdoor pool located on the Olinda-Monbulk Road. Entry costs just $4 for adults and $3 for children. The Dandenong Ranges is a naturally wonderful place to cool down because you are surrounded by beautiful trees and other greenery. In the heart of the Dandenong Ranges lives the Emerald Lake Park. Relax as you spend lazy summer days lying beneath the cool trees and blocking out the harsh sunlight. It is a destination for the Puffing Billy Railway and there are plenty of things to do, like picnics, walking trails, paddleboats and fishing. You can even enjoy a splash in the wading pool.

Belinda Kerr is Tourism and Business Development Officer at the Marysville Visitor Information Centre, so she knows a thing or two about the best places in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. We asked her to share some of her secret favourites with us so you can get the most out of your visit to the region.

What is Marysville’s best hidden treasure? Our best hidden treasure is something that is free and accessible to every single one of our visitors. We were thrilled to have been named as having the second best water, not only in Australia but the world, at this year’s Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition. Next time you find yourself in town, be sure to fill up a water bottle or two and enjoy our award-winning H2O. What is your ideal day out in the Yarra Ranges? One of the best days I have had out in the Yarra Ranges recently was
grabbing a couple of friends and heading out to Launching Place for an hour or two at the Archery Park, checking out the stalls at the Yarra Glen Racecourse Market; then, capping it all off with a lazy afternoon gin at Four Pillars Distillery in Healesville. What are the top five must-see attractions of the region? For myself, I would recommend visiting the following: 1. Stephenson’s Falls in Marysville; being one of the tallest falls in all of Victoria, with a 122m descent and a clear drop of 21m, it is a must see if you are visiting the Yarra Ranges. 2. The Yarra River at Warburton is one of my favourite places to visit for a picnic. The scenery is beautiful and the riverbank is a perfect place to spend a summer afternoon and cool off with a dip, or bring your lilo and float around for an hour or two.

3. The Pirianda Gardens in Olinda are beautiful all year round. You can easily fill in half a day walking the paths throughout the garden. Autumn is my favourite time to visit, with the colours of the trees turning to a spectacular orange.

4. Berry farms! Throughout the entire region during spring and summer, there is the opportunity to visit one of many berry farms and pick your own berries! Such a fun thing to do. You won’t ever have tasted a berry better than one you have picked yourself. 5. The Black Spur was recently listed as one of Victorias best drives. This is the road that links the Yarra Ranges to Marysville and the Murrindindi Region. Winding its way up the Great Dividing Range through a dense forest of tall mountain ash trees, the scenery is beautiful as you make your way through the Spur.

FROM the vineyard to the glass, the art and science of creating a spectacular wine takes more work than it may seem. Nestled in Coldstream, Tokar Estate brings a majestic and Mediterranean style to the Yarra Valley. Vineyard manager and winemaker Martin Siebert said the process of winemaking “starts with the grapes”. Winemaking at Tokar Estate can vary with each wine produced, but Mr Siebert said the grapes are picked and then put into a machine press to release the juices. He said the grapes then go through a fermenting process, where the addition of yeast helps develop the wine. After the yeast has developed, the wine is then put into oak wine barrels to develop the flavours of the wine. Vigneron and manager Daniel Tokar said the winery chose to use bigger barrels to create a fresher tasting wine. “The bigger barrels create a fresher taste, and less of an oak flavour,” Mr Tokar said. Once the wine is ready, it is then bottled and labelled. After being bottled, the wine is available to be enjoyed. Mr Siebert said the entire process can take up to 18 months. To alter the colour, flavour or other properties, Mr Siebert said this can be done out in the vineyard. “If the colour isn’t right, I can move the grapes around so they get more sunlight or less sunlight to develop the grapes in a different way,” Mr Siebert said. Mr Tokar said while older generations generally look for a full-bodied wine like a cabernet sauvignon, he said younger generations are now getting into tasting wine and look for a fresher taste.

By Peter Douglas ALTHOUGH Melbourne’s famed Spring Racing Carnival is starting to cool down, racing action in the Yarra Ranges is starting to heat up. The region offers some of the most picturesque, enjoyable race-meet opportunities, with the historic and incredible facilities at Yarra Glen and Healesville providing the ultimate backdrop for a great day out. And with the fantastic wines of the Yarra Valley flowing freely, why wouldn’t you take up the offer. Whatever type of day-out you’re after, you can be assured there will be something for everyone – be it securing a marquee or simply grabbing some friends and a picnic rug. Yarra Valley Racing will be hosting many fantastic meets over the summer months, including the Harness Christmas Race Day on 9 December, the Christmas Race Day on Friday 16 December, and the Kids Race Day on Thursday 29 December. Other top events over the warmer months include the Chill Out Race Day on Tuesday 10 January and the Mid Summer Race Day on Saturday 21 January. By Jodie Symonds LOCATIONS around Warburton with limited access for disabled people may be a thing of the past, with the help of a new motorised wheelchair. The TrailRider is a cross between a ricksaw and a wheelchair and allows people living with a disability to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Yarra Ranges – without limitations. Yarra Ranges Council and Parks Victoria purchased the first TrailRider earlier this year to be used in the Dandenong Ranges area, once picked up from Grant’s Picnic Ground in Sherbrooke.

Another TrailRider, recently purchased by Yarra Ranges Council and Parks Victoria, will available in Warburton, providing better access to the picturesque Yarra Ranges National Park.
With the help of the TrailRider, residents will be able to explore the beautiful parks and trails throughout the Upper Yarra region. According to Yarra Ranges Council, the wheelchair has the ability to handle tough terrain, allowing residents to experience steeper and longer trails. Yarra Ranges Council Disability Advisory Committee member Cliff Wise said he felt secure and comfortable in the chair. “It’s very well balanced and I feel safe in it,” Mr Wise said.

the perfect get-away By Jodie Symonds SUMMER is the perfect time for a weekend away. While Healesville is known for being one of Victoria’s largest wine regions, this busy town has more to offer than just exquisite wine. The many acres of farm land and rolling hills make it the ultimate tourist destination. Situated 52km east of Melbourne, Healesville on a weekend is jampacked with hungry foodies filling the many cafes, bars and restaurants along the main street. This beautiful township has many attractions, including the Yarra Valley Railway and the iconic Healesville Sanctuary. Take a step back in time as you board one of the historic 1950s steam trains at the Yarra Valley Railway, run solely by dedicated volunteers who make the experience like no other. If you love to appreciate Australian wildlife, a short drive will take you the Healesville Sanctuary on Badger Creek Road in Healesville. The Sanctuary is loaded with animals to see and things to do, including the chance to become a vet for a day, meet the keepers, and even get up close and personal with your favourite furry friends in a Magic Moment. Meet all of Healesville Sanctuary’s little creatures, including Australia’s iconic koala and kangaroo. You can visit the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, located within the Sanctuary – to meet vets and nurses and be able to watch the daily action of caring for ill wildlife. Touristnews
After all of that excitement, you may become a bit peckish. Luckily, Healesville has many places where you can grab a bite. Enjoy a locally made wine and a home-made pizza at the Innocent Bystander, located in the heart of town. For a good ol’ fashioned pub meal, head down to the main street to the Grand Hotel, where you can eat a fabulous ’parma’ to cure your hunger. If you are in need of something sweet to finish off, or to take home something delicious, Healesville’s Candy Emporium is a wonderland full of delicious treats and old favourites. closer to nature THERE’S nothing like Australian summer – the dry, hot weather and sunshine makes for a great time to visit the Yarra Valley. A well-travelled destination for visitors is the iconic Healesville Sanctuary, where Australian animals galore can be seen and admired in a bush setting, just a few minutes drive out of town. The sanctuary, which opened in 1934, hosts innumerable animals, from koalas and kangaroos to snakes, birds and Tasmanian Devils in its sprawling grounds – and you’ll need more than a day to see it all. There are keeper talks and presentations, such as the Spirits of the Sky event to be seen, and the chance to happen across dingoes going for a walk around the grounds with their keepers. For those who have visited in the past, there’ll be plenty of new sights, such as the recently-built Koala Forest exhibit, where visitors can travel on a new treetop boardwalk to see one of Australia’s most wellknown animals. Bird-watchers and those after a time-out can relax at the refurbished wetlands area at the sanctuary, with a specially-built bird-hide available to watch or photographs birds in their natural habitat. Visitors can also see behind the scenes at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, which cares for more than 1500 injured or orphaned animals every year – and children can bring in their teddies on school holidays for a free Teddy Vet Check. On school holidays, Victorian public holidays and weekends, children under 16 can visit the sanctuary free-of-charge. Teddies can also visit, as long as they have their carer with them. To get up close and personal with animals, the sanctuary also offers encounters with animals, for $12 per person. Visitors can also book to wade with platypuses in their tanks on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturday and Sunday from 11.15am for $175 per person. Bakery makes a true brew BAKERIES are not places renowned for their coffee, but Healesville Beechworth Bakery manager Kylie Bray said that, for them, it’s a priority. “It’s probably been the number-one focus for the business over the past 12 months,” she said. “We’re working very closely with Grinders and their training guys ... and the evidence is starting to show through now.” Ms Bray said staff members are trained extensively on how to make a good coffee before jumping on the machines, and between that training and a new Brazilian blend of beans, the results are speaking for themselves. “Return customers – customers who probably hadn’t been here before tried out coffee, thought it was awesome and come back,” she said. “The perception of bakeries is people don’t want to buy a coffee from a bakery, because they’re not that great – so I think people are quite surprised when they do actually come here and try our food and our coffee and it just sort of complements each other. “The great customer service brings them back every time.” She said those results were also seen when barista Jamie-Lee Paisley came second-place in a company-wide barista competition.
The baristas at each cafe faced-off, before a final tournament between the winners from each Beechworth Bakery franchise. Ms Bray said the new blend made for a better and sweeter coffee – without tasting like a sugar overload. “It’s not a hit in your face – it’s that smooth, sweet coffee,” she said. ART Framed Yarra Valley is marking its first year in Healesville, hosting exhibitions and creating frames for the works of artists from around the state. The gallery and art framing store was opened in late 2015, the brainchild of Healesville’s Richard Gommers, a bricklayer by trade. Creating great frames for people’s art, he said, was the goal that brought the store about. “It’s just a passion of mine to get something like this going - to get the pictures, to see the lights and the pictures behind lights, and just to bring all the artwork out,” he said. Adventure is virtually addictive By Jesse Graham IT was the game that sent thousands of people flocking to Lillydale Lake day and night to try and catch ‘em all. But there are plenty of places around the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to explore for budding Pokemon Hunters – or people just after a scenic day out. Pokemon Go was launched for smartphones and tablets earlier in the year. The game uses maps and GPS to allow players in any area to hunt and catch Pokemon, creatures from the famous Nintendo series that battle one another. The purpose of the game is to catch every Pokemon, train them and help them to evolve into stronger forms – then use them to battle other trainers at “gyms”. The gyms in the game are dotted around landmarks in towns, and the game requires players to move in the real world to move on the screen – Pokemon appear randomly in different areas, which must be explored by walking around. The Yarra Ranges made headlines because of the game, with the rare Pokemon Dratini found commonly around Lillydale Lake – though they are now less common, the spot is still ripe with rare creatures and is easy for people of all fitness types to wander in search of them. The game also uses landmarks and locations as “Pokestops”, where players can replenish supplies, such as Pokeballs, which are used to catch Pokemon. The kind of Pokemon found in the game varies by the areas visited – walking through the forests near Sherbrooke Falls, players might find more grass or bug-type Pokemon, while water-type Pokemon can be found at beaches and rivers. Though much as been written about unaware players coming to misfortune, players do not have to walk around gazing at their screen to play - as the character moves across the screen, the phone or device will vibrate when encountering Pokemon. Whether you’re a young player, starting out for the first time, or a nostalgic adult who played the original GameBoy games, Pokemon Go can add an extra layer of adventure to wandering the scenery of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

If you’re someone who isn’t into public displays of affection, then the Kyeema Track ‘The Secret’ lookout is the perfect location. It’s secret, because essentially it’s a hidden gem – and isn’t as well-known as places such as Sky High. There is a short 500-metre walk to get to the views, which is suitable for any level of fitness. Kyeema Track is worth the walk, as the breath-taking views are amazing at any time of the day – however, best at afternoon, sunset and night time. Mt Donna Buang Summit While Mt Donna Buang is widely known for being an ultimate snow destination, in summer it is the perfect place to explore, embrace romance and enjoy the view. It’s quite a scenic drive, as you work your way up to the summit. Once at the car park, there are picnic facilities, gas barbecues, toilets and picnic tables. It’s a nice picnic area and could easily be used to enjoy time with your loved one. For more of a view, head up the Mt Donna Buang Summit tower which will take you 21m above the picnic area, providing magnificent views of the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley, Melbourne and the alps. Unfortunately, access to the summit isn’t open in the evening. Malleson Lookout If you travel along Don Road, just out of the township of Healesville in a south-easterly direction for about 10 kilometres, on the right side you will come to Malleson lookout. It’s a quiet lookout, and is simply stunning as you can peak through the trees and view bushland, rolling hills and farms. 5 Ways, Kalorama A beautiful spot for a romantic picnic lunch or dinner is the 5 Ways in Kalorama. Take a walk and enjoy the incredible views, looking out across the Silvan Reservoir. It’s situated on the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, and is an easy viewpoint to access. Beautiful flowers often bloom and make the view more amazing. It’s a very romantic place at night. Touristnews

A delight to the senses By Peter Douglas AS one might expect when surrounded by such natural beauty, many Yarra Ranges residents are exceptionally passionate and proud about their gardens. And during many times of the year, there is an explosion of colour. Thankfully, for visitors and locals alike, there is an incredible array of gardens available to the public for viewing. Many residents open up their lovingly crafted gardens to the public once or twice a year, including Val Jackson of Monbulk (pictured). In addition, there are a great many inspiring places to where people gravitate over the warmer holiday months. Some of the options include Bruno’s Art and Sculpture Garden, which includes unique artworks from Bruno Torfs. Nestled among luscious rainforest, the garden features a collection of unforgettable hand-crafted characters. Or the Blue Lotus Water Garden, which covers more than 14 acres and features thousands of exotic and native flowering plants; including waterlilies, lotus and other rare plants. Perhaps check out the Alfred Nicholas Garden, which opens from 10am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day. Shady trees, a picturesque lake and the quaint boathouse are among some of the many wonderful sites to experience.

NO LONGER just the domain of grey nomads, caravanning in the Yarra Ranges is a great way to explore the region. Whether it’s creating life-long memories with the family, enjoying a relaxing getaway from the everyday hustle and bustle, or just soaking up the outdoors experience - there are plenty of options to consider. And why not start planning with many of the well-established caravan parks in the region within close distance to renowned attractions. Take, for example, the Marysville Caravan and Holiday Park which is located within walking distance to the amazing Steavenson Falls, which has to be seen to be believed. Just a short drive away is Lake Mountain which offers snow-play opportunities during snow season or trail-walking and beautiful views in the off-season. Alternatively there is the picturesque Doon Reserve which backs on to a particularly beautiful section of the Yarra River. In the background are the unforgettable mountain-scapes that are synonymous with the Upper Yarra region and which include the nearby Mount Donna Buang. Meanwhile, the Big4-branded holiday park just outside of Healesville represents a great way to escape to the region. Raise a glass (or two) to local wines By Peter Douglas IF you don’t already know about the thriving wine culture in the Yarra Ranges, then you probably will soon. But what many might not know is how many wonderful, awe-inspiring places there are in the region in which you can enjoy a wine. Be it with friends or family, there is something for everyone. Fruit at its berry best By Jodie Symonds THE aroma of fresh fruit picked straight from the tree is quite like no other. You can’t get fruit more fresh than when you pick it from the tree yourself. Crossings are key to rail-trail adventure By Kath Gannaway
IT MAY be a bridge too far to say that the many bridges along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail are a key feature of the trail experience. But, honestly, who doesn’t get a buzz from a bit of elevation! Impressive bridges book-end the 40 kilometre trail that follows the historical rail line, as the name suggests, starting at Lilydale railway station and finishing in the heart of Warburton. Surrounded by bushland at Seville.
Designed for walkers, cyclists and horseriders, it is recognised as one of Victoria’s great recreational trails. With an easy gradient for the majority of the trail, and with lots of townships along the way making it easy to plan the ride in stages, it has wide appeal for all ages and abilities. There’s a real sense of adventure as you approach the first bridge, towering over the Maroondah Highway at Lilydale. Opened in 2011, the 90-metre long, architecturally designed steel bridge incorporates elements of previous railway bridges and reflects its role as a gateway to the Yarra Valley and the rail trail. Importantly, it not only looks spectacular, it makes for a safe crossing of the busy highway. The next bridge is close by, but technically, it’s only a bridge if you are driving over the trail on Hereford Road in Mount Evelyn. For trail users, it’s actually a tunnel! Lined with corrugated iron in the style of the war-time Nissan huts, it’s popular with kids who find it hard to resist turning around to ride through it time and again. Just be careful not to tire the little tackers out too early! You’ll cross several bridges between Mount Evelyn and Seville before you get to the Woori Yallock Viaduct which stretches across the Woori Yallock Creek and the low-lying swamp that is a haven for birdlife. Following the trail through vineyards, farmlands and bushland the trail draws you to 38 SUMMER 2016
Walk or cycle over the Swing Bridge at Warburton, it's a real buzz. the magnificent mountain scenery that circles the Yarra Valley and on to Warburton. As you come into Warburton, the old railway bridge over Scotchman’s Creek Road is the introduction to the town as you make your way towards the official trail end. The bridge story doesn’t finish there however. Warburton is famous for its six bridges over the Yarra River and connecting the Yarra River walking tracks on either side of the iconic river. Starting at the Mayer Bridge you can weave your way over the Swing Bridge, on to the Brisbane Bridge, Bramich Footbridge to the Redwood Bridge and finally the Signs Bridge. For visitors the starting point of the trail at Lilydale railway station makes it a great option for those wanting to use public transport and with bike hire now available both in Lilydale and at Warburton, cycling the trail is even easier.
