20 per cent increase in Geelong’s overall crime, including a 37 per cent rise in theft and burglary.

Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville promised Geelong would receive its share of 406 new frontline officers that the government funded this year.

“These officers are being fasttracked through the Victoria Police

Academy, so they’re sworn in ahead of schedule and out in the community sooner,” she said.

“Geelong will continue to receive additional resources as our new officers are recruited and trained.”

But Ms Neville said Geelong police numbers were actually up on 2014.

Police numbers have decreased in Geelong during the past year despite the Andrews government spruiking statewide increases, an Indy investigation has revealed.

The paper this week obtained data showing that greater Geelong had 196.79 full-time-equivalent (FTE) po-

lice in September 2016, down from 198.32 at the same time in 2015.

The Geelong figures contrast with a State Government announcement late last month of a 155 state-wide increase since June 2015.

The decrease in Geelong police staffing coincided with a crime surge in the city during the past year.

State gives in to federal ‘pressure’ for GOR $25m

By Luke Voogt State Government will finally commit $25 million to the Great Ocean Road following six months of pressure from Canberra.

Transport Minister Luke Donnellan’s office confirmed to the Indy this week that the Andrews Government would match the Commonwealth’s latest $25 million committment to upgrading and repairing the iconic road.

“We welcome the Commonwealth Government’s announcement and look forward to finalising these discussions as soon as possible,” Mr Donnellan said.

Federal and state governments made a dual funding commitment of $50 million for the road in 2014.

The Commonwealth announced a further $25

million in this year’s budget. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has since called on Victoria for a matching contribution.

“It’s unbelievable that the Andrews Government refuses to recognise the economic value of this road,” Ms Henderson told the Indy earlier this year.

“After the Christmas Day bushfires and the recent floods which caused around 150 landslides along the road, local traders are under increasing financial pressure.”

Mr Donnellan confirmed Victoria would also match the Commonwealth’s recently-announced $1.5 billion infrastructure package for Victoria.

The commitment would include half of a joint $690 million Rural and Regional Roads package, he said.

Along with the Great Ocean Road the package

will provide funds for safety upgrades along the Hamilton Highway between Geelong’s ring road and Cressy. It will also provide funds to plan the duplication of Grubb Road in Ocean Grove and the Midland Highway between Geelong and Bannockburn.

Mr Donnellan welcomed the package but said the Commonwealth was still short-changing Victorians.

“We’ve said all along that this money belongs to Victorians - and it’s pleasing that Malcolm Turnbull finally recognises this,” he said.

“The funding is nothing more than what our state deserves.”

“Victorians are still not receiving their fair share of national infrastructure spending, with less than 10 per cent of funding - this is simply not good enough.”

Hub set to grow into food forest as supporters dig in “It’s all about inclusiveness,” she said.

Karingal BacLinks Foundation manager Joanne Forssman said employees would use the garden to cook meals.

“Supported employees will nurture the garden and watch the plants grow before bringing the produce to the kitchen to create amazing dishes,” she said.

“The garden will also be available for members of the local community to enjoy as well, adding to

School children have painted council-supplied plywood Christmas trees to imbue central Geelong with extra festive spirit, according to City Hall.

The City had planned to install 30 of the trees in Lt Malop Street but ended up erecting 48 with the help of students and teachers, said investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford.

Double Take Geelong netball star Maddi Robinson (pictured) must have been miffed to find herself the unwitting face, and voice, of a local media outfit’s self-promotion this week.

Maddi had been led to believe she would be promoting Run Geelong when she arrived at a local primary school for the prearranged media coverage.

Imagine Maddi's surprise the next Maddi Robinson day to discover herself pictured and quoted in a story talking up the paper - without any mention of Run Geelong.

To add insult to injury, she was also described as a “Melbourne Vixens star”. That's Maddi Robinson, who left the Vixens in September to play for Collingwood’s new team in 2017.

Apparently she was quickly on the blower to express major dismay about the coverage.

Doubtless it was a big spray but that’s what happens when you foul a straight-shooter!

Speaking of Collingwood, maybe Eddie and the boys should consider recruiting Geelong’s council administrators for the Pies’ AFL team.

After all, they certainly showed deft handball technique this week when dealing with the vexed issue of Geelong’s saleyards.

Readers might be aware the yards have been controversially closed to stock sales in recent months amid safety concerns, much to the consternation of local farmers.

The roads authority this week put out a statement warning motorists of further pothole menace to come in the wake of “Victoria’s soggiest September in 100 years”.

And didn’t the culprit cop a name-and-shaming, lest anyone blame those responsible for our roads.

that repairs could cost $1 million - right as the admins try to pay off many millions more in council debt.

The saleyards' future looked dicey, especially with the previous council putting a $5 million sell-off value on the site. Handy moolah indeed for paying off big borrowings.

However, the consultations revealed extensive and strong support for retaining yards, which must have swayed the administrators because this week they announced a $400,000 “interim” fix to reopen the site.

A strategy for the saleyards' long term-future would still have to be developed, they said, but it would take “at least” a few years.

Which means the ultimate, difficult decision will rest with Geelong’s next council, not the administrators, whose term finishes late next year.

The death of a cyclist in Geelong on Wednesday was a fatal reminder to follow the road laws, Highway Patrol Sergeant Darren Murphy has warned.

Sgt Murphy said the 42-year-old cyclist was riding west in the eastbound lanes of Ryrie Street about 8am before crossing the road.

He became caught on the trailer of truck, which dragged him 50 metres down the road before coming to a halt.

The Newtown man suffered horrific injuries.

He died on arrival at University Hospital Geelong.

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old Portarlington man, stopped immediately to render assistance.

Police blocked off Ryrie Street from Moorabool to Yarra Streets as they investigated the crash site.

Witnesses reported the man riding in the wrong direction and talking to motorists before the crash.

Sgt Murphy said police had caught “a few” cyclists cutting off traffic, riding outside bike lanes or in the wrong direction.

“Occasionally we see bike riders riding through red lights and things like that. But that goes for all road users, unfortunately.

“The majority of cyclists are doing the right thing but we just want to make sure everybody is aware of what they should and shouldn’t be doing.”

Sgt Murphy has co-ordinated police operations in the CBD targeting pedestrians, riders and drivers.

“There is a whole mix of people breaking the road rules which is putting others in the area in danger,” he said.

“If there’s a heavy amount of metal driving toward you and you’re not doing the right thing you could place yourself in serious danger.”

Sgt Murphy said police were investigating the collision.

He urged any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Trump in army jobs hope

The Trump presidency could boost Geelong’s defence industry, according to Corio MP Richard Marles.

The shadow defence minister’s comments followed President-elect Donald Trump’s commitment to a massive expansion of the US military.

“There is the possibility to benefit from a growing export market in US,” Mr Marles said.

“It’s incumbent on the (federal) government to work with Geelong companies to help develop their export potential.”

Mr Marles cited Lara-based Chemring and Marand, which has a site at Geelong’s former Ford manufacturing plant, as two local companies that could benefit.

Chemring manufactures anti-missile flares, designed for the US-built Joint Strike Fighter, while Marand engineers items with military applications.

“They’re great examples of Geelong businesses competing on the global space,” Mr Marles said.

“These are examples of how quite-niche players can have export opportunities around defence industries.”

In a Canberra speech this week, Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said Mr Trump’s planned expansion would create “remarkable opportunities” for Australia’s defence industry.

“Australia is well-positioned to grasp those opportunities,” Mr Pyne told the Submarine Institute of Australia.

The US hopes came as Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson promoted a recent Geelong workshop on opportunities to supply an Australian LAND 400 project to build military vehicles.

“This was a great chance for suppliers across the Geelong region to get a slice of the action,” she said.

The Department of Defence recently announced that BAE Systems and Rheinmetall had been shortlisted to participate in the next stage of the $20 billion project.

The Andrews government’s first budget “funded” 15 additional police for Geelong, with 20 arriving since the 2014 election, she said.

Police statistics obtained under Freedom of Information show that FTE numbers increased by 13 on November 2014.

The Government had also funded 17 new police custody officers for Geelong, which had “freed up hundreds of police shifts”, Ms Neville said.

Police numbers had increased state-wide but had decreased per capita, Mr O’Donohue said.

Earlier this year Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard said the new custody officers were making a significant difference.

They freed up detectives and officers, allowing Geelong Police Station to create a new highvolume crime team, he said.

Supt Gillard welcomed any extra police commitments.

“Give us more police and we’ll detect more crimes and arrest more people.”

The police employee data showed three additional officers on the Surf Coast between September 2015 and 2016.

Epworth’s ‘like Hilton’, says Turnbull Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Geelong on Wednesday for the official opening of Waurn Pond’s Epworth Hospital.

The not-for-profit private hospital has been open since 2 July but other commitments had prevented Mr Turnbull from attending until this week.

“I know I’m a little late in the opening,” he said.

“My government believes that all Australians must have access to affordable, quality health care.”

The hospital would employ Geelong’s first regional neurosurgeon who would begin operating next year, Mr Turnbull said.

“That means critical care can be done here

and, importantly, patients requiring surgery can have their operation and care closer to home and their families.”

Mr Turnbull compared the hospital to a luxury hotel.

“I think the Hilton Hotel chain has got quite a few hotels that aren’t as good looking as this.”

A patient felt that staying in the hospital was like winning the lottery, Mr Turnbull said.

“I’m amazed by what you’ve created.”

Mr Turnbull praised the work of local MPs in promoting the hospital and its medical staff.

“What Epworth has done is given you the environment and the technology to exceed in the care you give like you never have before.”

A long-lost Geelong premiership medal of the 1931 team’s longest-surviving member has reappeared - inside a screw top jar in Northern Ireland.

The jar had held Milton Lamb’s medal after Billy Mc Areavey, now 74, found it somewhere in central Belfast around two decades ago.

His brother, Seamus, 72, told the Indy from Ireland that he rediscovered the medal while talking to Billy two months ago.

“I told him my wife and I were going to visit her cousin in Werribee this Christmas,” Seamus said.

He was then showing Werribee on a map when Billy pointed out Geelong.

“I asked him what he knew about Geelong and it was then he told me about the medal.”

Billy was unsure exactly when or where he found the medal.

The only clue to its origin was an inscription: ‘Geelong F.C. 1931 M. Lamb’.

Seamus took the medal to a police station where a disinterested officer took Billy’s details, Seamus said.

“I think the policeman probably had more important things on his mind then.”

Fascinated by the find, Seamus began researching Milton Lamb.

“I found out that Milton trained as an engineer and was a navigator during the World War II. He then worked for Coles in a management position until retirement.”

William Milton Lamb played four years with Geelong. He died in 2006 aged 96, the last surviving member of the 1931 premiership side.

An illegal catch of 184 silver whiting from Cunningham Pier has cost three men almost $1500 in fines, according to Victoria’s fisheries department.

Their combined catch was more than three times the daily limit of 20 each, fisheries said.

Fisheries officers busted the trio on Sunday morning after a tipoff on 24-hour hotline 13FISH. “The officers began monitoring the men and shortly after 11am one of the trio returned to a car carrying a large white bucket.

“All three men then continued to fish for another 40 minutes and were watched as they caught more fish,” a Fisheries statement said.

“When they packed up and returned to their vehicle with their fishing rods and a blue bucket they were intercepted by the fisheries officers as they began to drive away.”

A search of the car found 90 whiting in one bucket and 94 in the other, Fisheries said.

Each angler would be fined $466 each.

Fisheries officer Ashley Virgona said large number of families and groups were catching fish on the pier.

“I’ve found out so much about Milton that I feel that I know him. He must have been a remarkable man.”

Seamus contacted the Indy for help after a fruitless search for Lamb’s relatives.

The Indy tracked down daughter Vivienne Reed, who was flabbergasted the medal had been found.

“He always wondered where that had gone,” she said from Melbourne.

The 71-year-old recalled her father speaking of the flag with pride.

“He’ll never forget going back by train in 1931 and all of Geelong was there to greet them. That was one of his most amazing memories.”

Vivienne was stumped how the medal ended up in Belfast, saying she had no memory of her father travelling to Ireland.

“He always thought he just lost it along the way somewhere but he was a bit vague about it.

It was something he was very proud of but then life moves on.”

Seamus said he would give the medal to Vivienne when he travelled to Australia.

“But it was also disappointing to see some anglers becoming greedy and exceeding the catch limit,” Mr Virgona said.

“Anglers are reminded that, although there appears a large aggregation of silver whiting in the area, they must be aware of the catch limit of 20 silver whiting per person per day.”

A ‘slimy threat’ to rowers replaced

By Luke Voogt An $850,000 landing ramp will prevent rowers falling into the Barwon River or destroying their expensive boats, according to a club president.

The previous algae-ridden ramp was a risk of serious injury for rowers, said Barwon River Rowing Club’s Laura Green.

“This is about getting both our athletes and our fleet onto the water safely.”

Ms Green said local rowers had spent up to 15 hours a week cleaning slime from the nowdemolished ramp.

Ms Green and other rowing officials joined Water Minister Lisa Neville to inspect construction of the new ramp this week.

“It’s moving pretty quickly as you can see,” Ms Neville said.

“It’s going to be a really great facility.”

State Government committed $700,000 for the

new ramp. Neville said it would secure Geelong “as one of the state’s premier rowing destinations”.

Rowing was worth more than $2.7 million to Geelong’s economy annually, she said.

“This ramp is for every event down here to ensure that rowing can continue safely.”

Rowing Geelong president Phil Ryan said more than 1000 rowers and eight clubs would benefit from the new ramp.

“We’re really pleased this is finally happening.”

The previous ramp was demolished in October, with its replacement due for completion by the end of December.

Geelong council and Rowing Geelong contributed the remainder of the funding for the ramp.

A number of elite rowers began their careers on the Barwon River, including Rio Olympian Jennifer Cleary.

Established in 1870, Barwon River Rowing Club is one of the oldest sport clubs in Victoria.

The grotesque brainchild of Geelong's TAC head office has won international acclaim at a regional media awards summit.

The TAC's Graham sculpture won the AsiaPacific Communications Award’s top prize for Campaign by a Governmental Institution during a presentation night in Singapore.

TAC senior manager road safety Samantha Cockfield was thrilled with the win.

“Like many of our projects there were so many people involved,” she said.

“Graham was hard work and a brilliant idea well executed. It’s a great credit to the team based in Geelong that we’ve got this internationally renowned work.”

The summit award followed widespread media coverage of Graham's launch earlier this year, including news reports around the world and extensive posts on social media.

The TAC commissioned sculptor Patricia Piccinini to work with road trauma experts on a design for Graham.

She gave him the ideal physique for surviving crashes.

Graham’s enlarged helmet-like head and a rib cage with air-bag-type structures helped point out human vulnerabilities in a unique way, Ms Cockfield said.

“Talking to people about why and how you get injured can be so difficult.”

TAC boss Joe Calafiore said the science of human vulnerability underpinned Victoria’s new Towards Zero approach to road trauma reduction.

“Cars have evolved a lot faster than humans and Graham helps us understand why we need to improve every aspect of our roads system to protect ourselves from our own mistakes.”

Quick fix to reopen old saleyards Geelong Saleyards will reopen in January after $400,000 of repairs, City Hall has announced.

But the yards’ long-term future remains in doubt, with council administrators calling the fix an “interim” solution.

The decision to reopen follows a public outcry over the future of the saleyards, which the previous council had slated for a $5 million sell-off.

City Hall closed the 150-year-old yards earlier this year amid concerns that deteriorating overhead walkways could collapse.

Council administrators held public consulta-

tions after a City Hall report said repairs could cost $1 million.

But this week the administrators announced the facility would return to “acceptable health and safety standards over the next few months” for less than half the cost.

The decision followed “extensive community engagement” including a “workshop” with farmers last Friday, administrators’ chair Dr Kathy Alexander said.

The talks indicated the saleyards provided a niche service that helped meet “the social and

learning needs” of farmers who would pay higher costs to use other yards, she said.

Dr Alexander highlighted feedback from “small stockholders” whose numbers were rising with a trend toward “peri-urban farming”.

The yards should remain open until a “suitable long-term option” was established, she said.

“We’re waiting for an independent report from the workshop’s facilitator and would also like to hear more from G21 and relevant partners in G21 councils before making a decision on the longterm options for stock sales for the region.

Sheep out to pasture as businesses look to re-brand Geelong Chamber of Commerce unveiled a new brand on Thursday, replacing the iconic logo that represented the organisation for 162 years.

Chamber CEO Bernadette Uzelac said that the brand signified a new chapter in the organisation’s history.

“As a city we are constantly evolving,” Ms Uzelac said.

“Our businesses are vibrant, entrepreneurial and resilient - and the chamber has a responsibility to accurately reflect our constituents.”

Ms Uzelac said the old logo, which features the images of a sheep and a stalk of wheat, no longer represented the “vibrant and diverse 21st city” of Geelong.

“We are no longer surviving off the sheep’s back.”

“These industries played a crucial role in shaping the Geelong we know today but after 162 years it seemed like the right time for a change.”

The chamber will roll out the logo - two years in the making - over the coming months.

“But we will never forget the history of the chamber,” Ms Uzelac said, “it forms an important part of the story of Geelong.”

Man disappears Police have appealed for public assistance to locate an elderly man who has been missing from Geelong for almost a fortnight.

Seventy-four-year-old James Polizos of Geelong West disappeared on 7 November, police said.

He was last seen in Autumn Street in his home suburb.

Police said Mr Polizos was known to frequent a nearby social club on Yuille Street and a supermarket on Shannon Avenue, both MISSING: Elderly Geelong also in Geelong West. West man James Pozilos.

Police released an image of Mr Polizos this week in the hope that someone would recognise him or could provide information on his whereabouts.

Police urged anyone with information to phone the Geelong station on 5225 3100.

Social media users expressed concern for Mr Polizos on a Facebook post about his disappearance.

Some said they had seen him in the past week.

Others indicated he was well-known and “wanders sometimes and then reappears”.

Freemasons have gathered at Belmont to celebrate one of their most famous brethren, "Lodge Member 252” - also known as Charles Brownlow.

Geelong Lodge of Unity and Prudence exhibited its new replica Brownlow Medal in honour of the football legend who joined the mysterious order in 1885.

Victorian grand master Don Reynolds said the replica would commemorate Brownlow’s contribution to Geelong and Freemasons.

“He played a significant role in the Geelong community in this period, being the secretary of the Geelong Cricket and Football Club in 1888,” he said.

“He was previously the captain of the Geelong Football Team and was still a member of the team when they played their first VFL match in May 1897.”

Mr Reynolds said lodges across the Bellarine

and Otways had donated more than $100,000 to local charities in the past 12 months.

The figure included $37,000 for Hope Suicide Bereavement Service in Geelong and $10,000 for a blood storage refrigerator at Andrew Love Cancer Centre.

The Freemasons also exhibited an engraved ceremonial trowel, which laid the foundation stone at the Geelong Hospital and Benevolent Asylum - now the Geelong Hospital - in 1850.

Geelong Lodge of Unity and Prudence held its first meeting in 1948 at the Royal Hotel, now the office of Federal MP and shadow defence minister Richard Marles.

Other noteworthy local members include publisher and politician James Harrison and pioneer Thomas Austin, infamous for introducing rabbits to Australia.

MP ‘back from the dead’

By Luke Voogt Lara MP John Eren has returned to work two months after a heart attack left him clinically dead for three minutes.

Mr Eren said he was “feeling healthier than ever” after doctors implanted a stent in an artery shortly after resuscitating him in Geelong’s public hospital.

“I never knew I was operating on one less artery,“ he said.

“Here I was thinking I needed a coffee to pep me up when actually one of my arteries was blocked.”

Mr Eren considered himself extremely lucky to be alive.

Only 9 per cent of Australia’s 30,000 annual cardiac arrest victims survive, according to Take Heart Australia.

The incident made Mr Eren value everything more, from his family to the sound of “birds in the morning”, he said.

“There’s nothing like dying for three minutes to bring you back to Earth.”

With Mr Eren’s mother and uncles suffering heart problems in their fifties, he was always at risk.

“When people look at me, they see a fit young man and wonder how it happened to me,” the 52-year-old said.

“But if you’ve got family history you can’t dodge it.”

Mr Eren suffered the arrest on Father’s Day 4 September when he and his wife were driving to see his dad in Melbourne.

“It’s like something heavy sitting in your chest and something wanting to break out,” he said.

“You realise there’s a struggle of life and death going on inside you - and you’re a bystander.”

His wife turned the car around and drove to Univeristy Hosital Geelong.

“I got to the hospital and within four or five minutes, I collapsed on floor of the emergency ward,” he said.

High-speed pains Police have caught a driver travelling almost twice the speed limit west of Geelong.

The motorist was one of two busted significantly over the limit at Moriac in two days.

Geelong Highway Patrol officers patrolling Barrabool Road detected the first car travelling at 188km/h in a 100km/h zone late last week.

Police said the car was impounded for at least 30 days, costing the driver $1110 for its release.

The officers charged the 28-year-old Winchelsea man with exceeding the speed limit and driving at a dangerous speed.

He would appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court at a later date, police said.

Police caught a 20-year-old Inverleigh man driving 44km/h over the limit while on a VicRoads-imposed good behaviour bond at Moriac two days earlier.

Geelong Highway Patrol officers detected him travelling 144km/h in a 100km/h zone in the middle of the afternoon on the Princes Hwy. Police suspended the man’s licence, issued him with a $661 on-the-spot fine and added six demerit points to his licence.

That cost the man his licence for 12 months.

Mr Eren remembered waking up in ICU and was later amazed to watch a video feed on screen as doctors inserted a stent.

“I followed it through all the way from my groin to heart. Twenty years ago that would not be possible.”

With 80 per cent of cardiac arrests taking place

outside hospital, Mr Eren urged people not to take chances with severe chest pain.

“Luckily for me, it actually happened on the premises at Geelong Hospital.

“Just go straight into hospital and get checked up.”

Barwon Health’s chairman is now also a board member of Geelong’s leading business group.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce announced this week that Dr John Stekelenberg had joined the board, replacing one of two directors who retired earlier this year.

Dr Stekelenburg, a GP who manages a clinic with 50 staff, said that as business owner he understood “the challenges that brings”.

“I also bring to the table a deep understanding of contemporary governance practices, strategic planning, stakeholder management and government relations.”

Chamber president Kylie Warne said Dr Stekelenburg would also ensure the organisation was “engaging strategically” with the burgeoning local health sector.

Letters People trumping socialists In last week’s Indy, Geelong MP Christine Couzens said she would find it hard to welcome Donald Trump to Geelong because of his sexist attitudes.

You could bet your house that if sexual deviate ex-president Bill Clinton came to Geelong she would welcome him with open arms because he’s of the same tribe: the socialist left.

Well, it’s president-elect Trump now and many are asking who actually voted for him.

A clue can be found from the Brexit referendum a couple of months ago when the Brits collectively defied the left and voted to leave the increasingly bureaucratic and controlling European Union.

Two main groups voted for Trump: the workers who were laid off in the fossil fuel, construction and manufacturing industries who saw their jobs go to China or highly subsidised windmills; and marginalised whites who felt increasingly under siege from arrogant socialist moral superiority dictating on issues such as asylum seekers, open borders, marriage, gay and lesbian rights, immigration, women’s rights, Islam and Muslims, Israel and Jews, indigenous rights, global warming, free speech, capitalism and democracy.

Anyone daring to express a contrary opinion was labelled racist, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, Islamophobic, deniers et cetera.

Across the Western democracies, voters are just starting to realise this destructive socialist cancer on our civilization and are starting to fight back.

GOR needs vision, not red tape Hopefully Polwarth MP Richard Riordan will stick to his guns in seeing through the establishment of a single centralised authority to manage The Great Ocean Road (Geelong Indy, 11 November).

The world’s largest war memorial, at 243km, and a proven jobs provider with an annual hospitality and tourism turnover exceeding $1 billion, requires sustained advocacy, streamlined, aggressive management and realistic levels of funding.

Whether it’s funded with first-call federal funds, ancillary state assistance, a toll or a dedicated lottery, a serious maintenance makeover, including elevations to negate coastal erosion, are required to provide job surety and to grow the brand.

That’s where a GOR authority, as advocated by the Member for Polwarth, could become the key facilitator.

As it stands, the challenge for the proposed authority would be to get the Turnbull coalition government to redress the fact that it’s purportedly allocating a paltry nine-cents-in-the-infrastructure-dollar into Victorian projects.

Given ad hoc and inadequate levels of funding, credit should go to VicRoads which has done some good work netting-wise, but sporadic and superficial media coverage hasn’t helped as the road has continued to crumble, causing closures impacting business.

Also, the underwhelming advocacy of G21 has come back to bite simultaneously the five regional members on their behinds, hence advancing another reason for a GOR authority to trump “endless bureaucracy”, as Mr Riordan noted.

Oranges have an extra fine appeal Horse trainers have long fed vitamin C to their steeds to keep them healthy, says veteran Bendigo horseman Michael Coulter.

But Michael says his Cejuvenate orange peel powder can treat the symptoms of both high cholesterol and diabetes - in humans.

For the last six years his 81-year-old father Fred has been a walking, breathing experiment for the powder.

Doc and patient share same stage

By Luke Voogt Leanne Treloar is alive to sing and dance today thanks to the care and treatment of Geelong nurses and oncologists.

“There are a lot of people in Geelong who could say the same thing,” she said this week ahead of her first-ever Medimime.

The Grovedale mother-of-two will play Fairy Daisy in the ageless classic Sleeping Beauty for the fund-raising pantomime series, which starts on Friday 18 November.

Leanne, now a nurse herself, survived ovarian cancer in 1996 - midway through Year 12.

Highton GP Liz Lester, who coincidentally will play Queen Rosemary, referred the then 17-yearold Leanne to specialists.

“If it wasn’t for Liz and all the staff, I wouldn’t be here to have my lovely family,” Leanne said.

At first, surgeons suspected she had appendicitis but during the operation they found a tumour on each of Leanne’s ovaries.

“They took out what they could there and then and I had chemo after that,” she said.

“At that age, the first thing I thought was I was going to die. But I ended up graduating, and getting a scholarship because of the hardship.”

Leanne already knew Liz through amateur theatre prior to the referral and she acted as a teenager for GSODA. “The only talent I have is a bit of singing,” she said.

“I’ve been aware of Medimime for a while, but never decided to try it until now.”

For Leanne, pantomime was her way of giving back to the doctors and nurses who helped her.

“They are so passionate about giving to the community,” she said.

“I don’t have the money to give them, but at least I can donate my time and what little talent I have.”

Leanne said the interactive play would get young princesses dancing, singing and shouting, but there would be plenty for boys, too, including thrilling sword-fights.

“The kids will love it, but the adults will get just as many laughs - if not more - because of the double entendres.”

Multi Golden Guitar winning songstress Sara Storer will visit Geelong this weekend after a lengthy absence from the touring circuit.

The Albury mother is hitting the road with her new album, Silos, as her four boys grow a little older.

“I’m at a stage where I can do a little bit - so it’s really good to be back,” she said.

The veteran singer-songwriter has become “more and more of a perfectionist” as her career has progressed.

“I think back to my early stuff and I was pretty much of the attitude of ‘she’ll be right’,” she said.

“Every album is my best work yet. The more I do it the better I become.”

Storer had a relatively quiet period between 2010 and 2015 while bringing four boys into the world.

“It’s been a bit hard to get away with the kids,” she said.

But she hasn’t been idle.

In 2014 she won three Golden Guitars at the Country Music Awards Tamworth - bringing her tally to 19 - before the birth of her fourth son in early 2015.

Storer has lived all over Australia and her music is a colourful “personal dairy” of her travels.

“I’ve always been in love with the country and country people,” she said.

“There are so many beautiful characters to see out there and beautiful things to see in this country, which I can paint through music and song.”

In 2000 the then 26-year-old school teacher burst onto the Australian country music scene with a performance in her hometown of Katherine.

Quartet’s sound hits the heavens The sounds of Geelong and Melbourne’s top organists will echo through St Mary’s Basilica in a free four-week concert series starting later this month.

Bellarine resident, emeritus professor and Orchestra Geelong conductor Mel Waters will kick off the series.

Prof Waters has played the organ and harpsichord for the Australian Chamber Orchestra and capital city orchestras around the country.

His conducting posts have included the Australian Youth Orchestra and he has played and conducted in the UK, US and Europe.

Currently, he plays for St Mary’s Star of the Sea Sorrento, St Francis’ Church Melbourne and Scotch College.

Melbourne organist Rhys Boak will squeeze in a recital amidst a packed schedule.

Boak is one of Australia’s busiest organists and a veteran of several concert tours in Europe and Asia, promoters said.

In 2011 he toured Germany, Denmark and

France, performing on historic instruments like the Great Silbermann Organ of Freiberg Cathedral.

Welsh-born Ken George, the organist at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Newtown, will play at the basilica on 12 December.

George completed an honours degree in music at Cardiff University and taught at a number of local schools.

St Mary’s very own Frank De Rosso will play the final concert of the series.

The basilica’s long-time organist and artistic director has music running through his veins.

Nearly two decades ago he succeeded his father as director of St Mary’s Choir, who founded the group in 1953.

De Rosso won the Austin-Healey award for Meritorious Service to the Parish in 2013.

The lunchtime recital series starts at 12.30pm on 28 November at The Basilica of St Mary of the Angels.

Groucho and pianist at Potato Shed An award-winning American actor will bring his Groucho Marx tribute show to Drysdale’s Potato Shed this weekend.

Frank Ferrante has put on his Marx show for America’s Public Broadcasting Services as well as at top venues in New York and London.

The New York Times has described Ferrante as “the greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx’s material”.

The show’s promoters said Marx’s son Arthur “discovered” Ferrante while still a drama student in California.

The pair put together Ferrante’s Groucho: A Life in Revue which won a Theatre World Award in 1987.

Ferrante’s “fast-paced 90 minutes of hilarity” featured him on stage as the legendary comedian alongside a pianist.

“The two-act comedy consists of the best Groucho one-liners, anecdotes and songs including Hooray for Captain Spalding, and Lydia, the Tattooed Lady,” the promoters said.

The Potato Shed audience would “literally become part of the show” as Ferrante ad-libbed his way throughout the performance in “grand Groucho style”.

Despite that fact that at least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70, a new study has found half of the population still aren’t using sun protection every day during summer.

Victorians know the dangers of sunburn and tanning and while most know the SunSmart message by heart, too many are still failing to actually put this knowledge into practice.

“Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to be vigilant in the sun,” leading Geelong plastic surgeon Mr Ian Holten said.

“Over 40,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually but over 95 per cent of skin cancers can be successfully treated if detected early,” he said.

Skin cancer and mole checks, talking to an expert about the level of skin cancer risk and determining how much sun exposure is really needed to provide enough vitamin D is a good idea.

Skin cancer detection can be difficult, with skin cancers rarely felt and sometimes occurring on parts of the body that are not usually exposed to the sun, such as between the toes.

Not all skin cancers start out as moles so it is important for people to have a trained eye look over their skin on an annual basis.

“A skin check is easy and simple and takes 20 minutes. It’s just one of those things you need to do.”

Mr Holten has trained Australian Skin Face Body’s team of doctors to carry out comprehensive skin checks.

GEELONG Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree will return on Friday 11 November when the City of Greater Geelong hosts Light Up Geelong, our biggest night of Christmas celebrations.

Light Up Geelong will feature an impressive line-up of entertainment from 7.30pm, followed by the lighting of Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree, a short fireworks show, and projections on City Hall.

Talented Geelong artists Sophia Katos and Imogen Brough will headline Light Up Geelong, performing popular Christmas carols from 8.30pm before the Christmas tree lights up at 9.00pm.

Artists performing at Light Up Geelong include the Rachel Brennan Duo, Uptown Brown and Steve Thew.

Kids will love the face painting, balloon artist, stilt walkers and of course Santa.

Geelong’s Floating Christma s Tree will light up daily from 8.30pm to midnight.

Get into Central Geelong early to enjoy shopping and dinner before the festive entertainment begins.

The light shows will run for approxim ately six minutes with a nine minute break.

Watching Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree light up in November has become a tradition for many local families.

Geelong’s Floating Christma s Tree will be in place for Orthodox Christma s, with disassembly on 7 January.

Now in it’s third year there will be new music and lighting shows to look forward as the crowd counts down for the Christmas tree reveal.

Holden’s latest, brightest Spark Model range HOLDEN Spark replaces the company’s previous Barina Spark - and is significantly better thanks to having a considerable amount of Australian input.

The new Spark is built on an all-new, stronger platform.

Engine size has increased from 1.2 to 1.4 litres; an efficient CVT automatic sits beside it, though there’s also a manual should you want one.

The Holden Lang Lang proving ground southeast of Melbourne was used extensively during Spark’s design and testing stages.

GM-Holden is keen to point out this facility will remain in operation as a key part of the GM global empire long after Holden’s Australian factories close late next year.

Holden Spark comes in two equipment levels, the base model LS which is priced at $13,990 with a five-speed manual gearbox or $15,690 with a CVT automatic.

The higher-specced, CVT-only, LT has a recommended retail of $18,990.

The LS comes with 14-inch steel wheels, the LT gets 15-inch alloys. Spark LT also has a smart key with push-button starting, cruise control, and a leather wrapped steering wheel.

Holden Spark has a sleeker, more stylish appearance than the superseded Barina Spark.

There’s a bold front grille and relatively narrow A-pillars.

The Spark has ‘hidden’ door handles at the top of the rear doors in an attempt to give the appearance of a three-door hatch.

New Spark is lower and slightly longer and sits on an extended wheelbase.

It retains the tall stance as that’s necessary to give reasonable interior room in any very small car.

The double-stack GM grille works particularly well because of the tall front of the Spark.

Boot capacity is always a compromise in cars in this class in order to give reasonable legroom in the back seat. There’s a luggage volume of 185 litres in the Spark, but it can expand to 985 litres with the 60/40 rear seatbacks folded.

The new 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine generates up to 73 kW of power at 6200 rpm and torque of 128 Nm (CVT auto) and 124 (five-speed manual gearbox), both when revving at a pretty high 4400 rpm.

SPORT McDonald fires up in Cats’ attack LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club bounced back to form last Saturday with a commanding first day performance against Casey-South Melbourne.

After being asked to bowl first, the Cats started brightly with Jake Reed snaring an early wicket, before a series of solid partnerships ensued, at one stage Casey South Melbourne reaching a threatening 4/178.

However, the leg spin of Brenton McDonald slowly wore them down, as they were eventually dismissed for 244 in 81 overs.

McDonald finished with the outstanding figures of 6/75 from 30 overs, the gun all-rounder has been a great recruit for the Cats this year, and is really leading the way with his skill and experience.

To finish the day's play, Geelong had to face 15 overs, a task they have found difficult to complete without the loss of a wicket in recent weeks, but with two openers in form, including one that has played for Australia padded up, the team would have felt a bit more at ease.

And so it proved as Aaron Finch with 39 not

out and James McDonald with 37 not out saw the side cruise to 0/85 at stumps.

While they won’t be counting their chickens, the Cats will see this as a golden opportunity to grab some much needed points and lift the spirits around the place.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the surprise packet of the season thus far has been Newtown & Chilwell. After a number of seasons battling down the bottom of the ladder, the club has regrouped nicely to be undefeated after four rounds, and with a very winnable game coming up this round against Lara.

While the Two Blues have many players in good form, the addition of Jordan Clark has been the icing on the cake. He made 57 in Round 3 in their epic win over St Josephs, but that was just a sign of things to come.

Last game against Murgheboluc, the gun allrounder made 142 batting at number five, before enjoying success with the ball, taking 3/48 from his 20 overs.

He hasn’t had to do it all himself though, George Chisolm did his bit, making 30 opening the batting, before claiming 4/44 as the side romped to a 50 run win.

While Lara has managed just one win so far, they were far from disgraced last game, pushing East Belmont all the way, making 258 in reply to the Lions 333.

Danny Hughes top scored with 80, while his brother Andy was out injured, a fact that may well have been crucial as he had made a scintillating century the game before to see the side claim the points over Geelong City.

The Two Blues will go in rightful favourites as winning form is good form, but Lara boast plenty of match winners, and if they can get a more even spread of contributors, they will ensure whoever wins will have earned it.

ON A ROLL: Geelong paralympian Richard Colman sprints for the line in Run Ballarat ahead of its sister event in Geelong this weekend.

Colman said he was looking forward to a “roll around the streets” for Run Geelong on Sunday.

Poor lead-up but Robertson squashes the opposition Lara’s Corey Robertson has won the state’s 2016 Division 1 squash title despite losing in his final event last weekend.

The 47-year-old lost to Bendigo’s Cameron Penna in the deciding play-off for the event 11/13, 11/5, 11/6, 11/6.

“Cameron was just a bit too quick for me on the day - he’s about 12 years younger,” Robertson said.

“He played well. We have a good rivalry with Bendigo. I used to be their junior champion - it’s about time they started beating me.”

But his consistent season saw him win 7500 points and claim the 2016 Victorian Squash Grand Prix Circuit Championship for the second year running.

“It’s been a really good circuit,” he said, “it’s been lots of fun.”

It’s been a good year for other members of the Corio Squash Club.

Fellow Corio player Ben Jackamovich finished his GP Circuit season in the best way possible, topping the standings in Division 6.

4 and 15-year-old Taylah Dyer won the women’s Division 6.

“We’ve had a very successful year as a club on that circuit,” Robertson said.

More than 90 players from 13 divisions converged on Melton for the 2016 Squash Logic Open.

The tournament gave competitors their final opportunity to secure points in the race for the 2016 Grand Prix Squash Circuit title in their respective grades.

Winners and runners-up will now be presented with their trophies at the Squash and Racquetball Victoria AGM and Awards Night early next year.

Melton also hosted an open grade event (separate from the Victorian Squash Grand Prix Circuit), which Victoria’s number one ranked male player, Rex Hedrick, won in emphatic fashion.

The world number 55 went through his three matches without dropping a game against Luke Simms in his 11/4, 11/5, 11/6/ victory.

Corio Squash Club expects to host 150 players at a Geelong open on 25 and 26 of February.

CHAMPION: Corey Robertson won back-to-back titles in the state Division 1 circuit last weekend.

Snapper season kicked into gear last week with a much-needed break in the weather.

Venturing onto Corio Bay’s outer harbour last Friday night, Tackleworld Geelong’s Kevin Hunter had his sights firmly set on finding a snapper.

After anchoring up and waiting for some time, Kevin’s rod finally loaded up with a 3.82kg fish that devoured a pilchard bait.

Anglers again encountered excellent numbers of pinkie snapper from Western Beach’s moorings through to the grammar school lagoon.

Soft plastics were an effective choice of lure, with anglers fishing from a boat benefitting from correctly marking schools on their fish finders.

Adam Van Der Lugt fitted in a quick half-hour land-based session after work to casting Gulp Nemesis 4-inch soft plastics from the rocks near St Helens’ boat ramp where he hooked up in the first few seconds.

After watching his spool quickly empty of line, Adam had 15 tense minutes of fighting and scrambling down the rocks before banking an 84cm snapper.

Clifton Springs delighted anglers with quality whiting right along the Curlewis Bank.

Fish to 40cm and bag limit captures were reported, with pippie the standout bait when rigged on a light running sinker rig.

Snapper were also boated along the channel and further out at Wilson Spit.

With the water temperature rising noticeably, it’s worth trolling lures for snapper while trying to locate schools on sounders.

Swan Bay continued producing large numbers of Australian salmon of varying size on lures or baits fished in berley trails.

Gummy sharks frequented the channel during the evenings, with Joseph Walsh boating a 1.2m specimen while fishing with whiting as bait.

Queenscliff held some impressive squid on the grass beds. Anglers drifting or casting large artificial squid jigs reported baglimit captures.
