Send Santa a letter

THE Peregian Springs community can now look forward to teeing off following news the golf course is due to reopen mid-December.

A statement from Aveo announced Victorian company Golf Services Management Pty Ltd (GSM) had been granted a five-year lease to operate the Peregian Springs golf course with an option for a further five-year lease.

Aveo said the announcement follows an “urgent but thorough process” by the Board of Holdings to identify an experienced golf course operator and manager for the site.

The former Peregian Springs Golf Course was closed earlier this year after the club was forced into administration and liquidation.

The closure left residents outraged and hundreds gathered at a community meeting to voice their anger and form the Peregian Springs Residents Association (PSRA).

PSRA president Bob Joubert said the association was delighted to hear the club would re-open.

“This is fantastic news,” he said. “We are very excited by the news, which is pleasing to the whole community, whether golfers, home owners or residents, keen on seeing this wonderful facility being properly used again.”

Mr Joubert said the PSRA couldn’t take credit for the re-opening of the course but said it was great a great example of “people power”.

Boy stung by a stonefish

By Jolene Ogle A KEEN fisherman's close call with a venomous stonefish in the Noosa River is a timely reminder to be on the lookout for dangerous marinelife this summer.

Alex Bye, 13, and his friend Jai Housley spend most of their weekends on the banks of the Noosa River, but when Alex cast his net on Sunday 13 November, he didn’t make the catch he was hoping for.

He felt something brush against his leg, but didn’t think it was anything serious until he was gripped by pain.

When Alex’s friend and fishing companion tried to pick up the stonefish, Alex pushed him out of the way before falling down in agony.

A woman from Noosa Boathouse and a man from Noosa Charters rushed to help Alex before calling an ambulance.

Stonefish are highly ven-

omous and sting their victim through dorsal fin spines they erect when threatened or disturbed. They are found throughout shallow coastal waters of the northern half of Australia and are often camouflaged among coral, rocky reef, rubble and aquatic plants.

Alex’s mum Lea said she was shocked and didn’t realise stonefish were in the Noosa River.

“I’ll think of the river differently from now on,” she said.

Lea said Alex was lucky because he was only pierced by one of the stonefish’s spines.

“He’s OK now, recovering well,” she said. “But I wanted to let others know to be aware of stonefish in the river.”

Earlier this year, while walking along the foreshore, Lea was stung by stingray with the barb going through the top of her foot.

“I had to go to the hospi-

tal and I was on crutches for a long time. I couldn’t walk properly for four months.

That’s how long it took for my foot to return to normal,” she said.

Long-time Noosa Main Beach lifeguard Isaac said the best treatment for a marine sting or attack was hot water.

“Get a bucket of hot water and put your foot in it, because it’s usually the foot or the ankle,” he said.

“If the pain gets worse, call an ambulance.”

Isaac said the best advice was to be wary of marine life in local waterways, particularly stingrays in the Noosa River.

“There are lots of stingrays in the river. If you stand on the bridge on a calm day, you can even see them clearly. Stonefish are more uncommon. In my 14 years of service, I’ve seen one case,” he said.

“But the best thing to do is be wary.”

Could Noosa be the state’s eco scooter capital?

Could an increase in scooters mean a decrease in traffic throughout the shire?

NOOSA could soon be the “scooter capital of Queensland” with council expected to this week approve a new transport policy.

The policy has been designed to encourage alternative transport usage throughout the shire and reduce residents’ dependency on private cars.

The policy was first presented to the Services and Organisation Committee on Tuesday 8 November.

It said that if the Noosa way of life is to be protected into the future then the “ultimate aim would be for a culture to be developed where the Noosa community can be ... freed from car dependency”.

If approved at Thursday’s (17 November) ordinary meeting, the new transport policy will be used to guide all council transport and transportrelated planning, infrastructure and decision-making.

Speaking in the general committee meeting on Monday (14 November), Councillor Brian Stockwell

said scooters should be considered in future transport planning along with other eco methods of travel.

“There’s a congestion element to it,” he said.

“We know a lot of the workers who work down Hastings Street and other congested areas during peak times have converted to scooters because it’s a way to get to work without having to queue.”

Cr Stockwell said he believed a transport system more focused on environmentally-friendly options could become part of Noosa’s identity.

“My view is Noosa could be the scooter capital of Queensland,” he said.

“It could become part of the cultural identification when people come here. It could become natural; if you want to give the car a holiday and get around on a motorised vehicle, you hop on a scooter.”

Mayor Tony Wellington said the document acted as a guideline for future planning decisions and was not a detailed strategy.

“We began a process of consultation with the community on our transport strategy and determined that we needed to do this high-level work first before we could delve into the deep details of an actual strategy,” he said.

“So what we have now is a policy that provides the overarching principles we’re aiming for with regard to transport in the shire and the strategy components will come later.

“We’ve already started working those so we can develop some specific items that we can then run through a community consultation process.

We have had one consultation process via Your Say Noosa, but that is just the beginning.”

The policy states key outcomes such as aiming for a future where residents can go about everyday business without needing a private car, easy and safe access to schools by walking, cycling and public transport, cost effective alternative transport options instead of cars, and the incorporation of new technologies in transport solutions.

“Aveo saw that a lot of people feel protective of this (suburb) and won’t be happy if it is not preserved.

“The PSRA was formed because of this issue, but it’s not the sole issue and we will address other issues. But, this very clearly demonstrates that people do take where they live very seriously and will protect it. And, if they try to step out of line again, they know there will be hundreds of unhappy residents.”

Holdings chairman Geoff Grady said he was pleased to have secured GSM as the new manager and operator of Peregian Springs golf course.

“GSM is a first-class operator who we are confident will return Peregian Springs golf course and clubhouse to the high standard that they demand,” he said.

Mr Grady thanked the community for their patience during this “very upsetting time” and said he is confident residents and the public will again enjoy the golf course.

GSM company director Ian Denny said he was excited by the prospect of re-establishing the “wonderful” golf course and facility.

“GSM has been through a similar experience at St Andrews Beach, where it re-opened after a period of closure in 2009 and the course has been profitable and highly-ranked ever since,” he said.

“The maintenance team from Solid Ground have done a fantastic job in keeping the course up to a standard that will see plenty of smiling golfers hitting the fairways again very shortly.”

TOURISM Noosa has walked away from the 2016 Queensland Tourism Awards with a swag of honours for their innovative marketing campaigns.

The awards were held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Friday 11 November with Tourism Noosa winning silver in the Richard Power Award for Destination Marketing.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the awards were a positive opportunity to showcase not only the region but individual businesses from the region.

Jack blows 100 candles

By Hollie Harris ONE hundred years young, Jack Floyd strides down his hallway with all the vigour of a man many years his junior making it difficult to believe he celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday.

Day two of his birthday celebrations kicked off with Noosa Member Glen Elmes hand delivering a very special gift to an emotional Jack, who was flattered and overwhelmed by all of the attention.

His wife of 61 years, Johnnie sat by his side in front of the piles of happy birthday cards, letters and telegrams sent to Jack as they raised a glass of champagne.

The two met when they were young dancers in England and became a well-known duo called Floyd and B’nay who performed for several decades across many countries.

They performed alongside Mickey Rooney, Laurel and Hardy and Judy Garland before making a home together in Adelaide.

“I started tap dancing with my father. It was 1931, and I was just 15 years old,” Jack said.

When Jack sent out an advertisement looking for a dance partner, it was Johnnie who answered and the two were a perfect fit from the getgo.

“We found we danced very well together, and we’ve been doing that since 1947,” Johnnie said.

“We would start dancing at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and dance until 11 at night, six days a week.

We opened a ballet school in Adelaide which we ran for 30 years and we still get loads of Christmas cards from our old students,” she said.

Johnnie says her husband was still very healthy for his age.

“No sickness - nothing like that, and when he goes to the doctors,

So what does Jack think is his secret to maintaining such a healthy body and happy spirit after 100 years?

“Well, we are vegetarians, we don’t eat animals, I think that helps.

And I think the fact that we were dancers. We used to do a very difficult dancing act. By the time we got to the last act, we couldn’t feel our legs. And I drink a few gallons of beer!”

Lower speed is on the radar A NEW radar-activated message sign is helping put the brakes on speeding on local roads.

Council plans to deploy the variable message sign (VMS) at speeding hotspots across the shire to remind lead-footed drivers to slow down on council’s road network.

It’s an initiative funded by the Queensland Government Community Road Safety Grants Program.

Project officer Joanna Ferris said every kilometre over the speed limit increased the risk of tragedy, particularly in areas where children were out and about and crossing roads.

“The beauty of these signs is that they are mobile so we can move them around council’s road network at the request of police, or in response to calls from the community,” she said.

Speeding vehicles trigger the VMS to display the speed limit, the vehicle’s speed, and a message urging the driver to slow down.

“We know from other councils’ experience that they do help reduce speeding,” Ms Ferris said.

A recent evaluation by Brisbane City Council found that such signs were effective in slowing around 40 per cent of speeding vehicles.

“At Kauri Street, we’ve tailored the message to remind speeding drivers that they’re putting children’s lives at risk.”

Disco dance to celebrate disability A SPECIAL disco will be held on Saturday 3 December to celebrate World Disability Day with everyone invited to come along and enjoy a great night out.

Deferred by design

Event organiser Rob Flanagan is looking forward to the Disability Day Disco on Saturday 3 December at the House with No Steps.

A SHORTAGE of design staff has been blamed for a number of capital works programs being deferred to the 2017/'18 financial year.

The September Quarter Budget Review was presented to the General Committee meeting on Monday 14 November, and outlined a number of projects that were still in the design stage.

Mayor Tony Wellington asked director of planning and infrastructure and acting CEO Martin Drydale why projects such as the Moorindill Street intersection and Hilton Terrace intersection works were still only in the planning and design phase and had not progressed to the construction stage.

Mr Drydale said there was some delay in negotiating with utility providers such as Telstra to remove underground wiring for some intersection works, but added a lack of design staff was resulting in a backlog of work and therefore halting construction works on a number of other projects.

“In terms of the last six months ... we’ve had two resignations (of design staff) to deal with plus a long-term absence,” he said.

“That’s resulted in a design team that should be five to two designers, and a lot of pressure has been placed on those two individuals to get as much done as possible.”

Mr Drydale said a new manager for the design team had been recruited and had already started work, and two pilot programs had been run to find ways to prevent a backlog of work if critical employees left their position.

One of the projects that will have to wait due to the lack of resources is the Pomona Master Plan with the project now deferred until “more resources are available” and it will be reconsidered in the 2017/'18 capital program.

The $200,000 allocated to build a bus turnaround for Creek Street in Noosaville has also been pushed back to 2017/'18, but councillor Frank Pardon said council had fulfilled its obligations in regards to community consultation and was now waiting on Translink to release the results of their survey conducted earlier this year.

“I’m happy to push this one back.

I’ll cop the flack,” he said. “I feel for the residents. They’re sick of the buses beating up their road, but we’re stalled waiting for Translink.”

Despite the delay in capital works projects, according to the Budget Review report, a number of projects came in under budget and $28,000 will hopefully be allocated to replacing the currently condemned shade house at the Noosa Botanical Gardens, plus $10,000 for residents affected by local flying-fox colonies.

The September Budget Review is expected to be ratified at the Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 17 November.

Nudes just want solitude

The incident has also sparked outrage on Facebook with many users calling for authorities to leave the nudists alone.

AN EMAIL from a man who said he witnessed police hiding in the bushes on Thursday 3 November has sparked a furore as locals demand nudists be left alone at A-Bay. In an email to local activist Robin Bristow, the man who had recently moved to Noosa from Victoria said he went to A-Bay in the morning and about 11am saw two plainclothes officers issuing tickets to people.

“After the officers finished their business they were hiding under trees and waiting for newcomers to the beach,” the man said.

“After people stripped off and walked down to the water, and by the time they came back up, the officers approached them and (gave) them tickets.”

The man said the most “appalling and disgraceful” thing he saw was when an officer allegedly ran over to an elderly nudist couple and booked the man and not the woman.

“These officers behaved like hunters looking for prey on the beach,” he said.

“They are merciless, even booking the two peaceful pensioners.”

The man questioned whether the officers were upholding the law or raising revenue by not appearing to give warnings to any of the beachgoers who were fined.

Tree honour for McGraths THE second star on the Ricon Christmas Tree is for a local Cooroy family James and Sophie McGrath, and is sponsored by their descendant and well-known local, Kennedy McGrath. “The Sponsor a Star on the Ricon Christmas Tree is such a great way to honour someone special in your life. Our family felt that as we descended from two pioneering families in Cooroy it was a great way to recognise them,� Kennedy said.

James McGrath grew up in NSW and from his early boyhood, was closely connected with the breeding and improving of cattle, particularly AIS cattle and Ayrshire dairy cattle.

James won in all the leading shows in NSW including Sydney with his biggest success gained with the Ayrshire bull, Loftus.

James also went on to become a noted judge at Sydney and other main shows in NSW at different periods. He was also appointed Judge of the AIS and Ayrshire breeds at many Queensland shows. His advice, which was always freely given, was sought by many of the leading dairymen of the North Coast.

At age 35, he married Sophie Mary Badans, of Jamberoo NSW, with whom he went on to have a beautiful family. James and Sophie moved from Nowra NSW, to Bundaberg in 1906 as manager of the dairy cattle for ‘Buss Estate’ at Bundaberg with their children Myra, Rita Jane, James Clyde, William Mark, Percy Mervyn. In Bundaberg they had another child, Herbert Wesley.

The family moved to Cooroy in 1907, camping in the railway yards behind where the post office now stands. In 1908 the final addi-

tion to the family, Charles Phillip Crawford, arrived. The family then settled in the Happy Jack Creek area where they developed a dairy farm.

Of their seven children, two sons, James Clyde and William Mark, served in World War I. Sadly, James Clyde did not make it home. The Gympie Times reported that J. C. McGrath had been killed in action on Tuesday 22 October 1918 and the news was broken to his parents

by Reverend J Gaunders. James had been on the front for three years and was just shy of 21 when he died. In 1919 William Mark returned home to his family, hailed by the Gympie Times as a returned hero.

The grief Sophie endured at the loss of her child never left her and she passed away four years later in Cooroy on Saturday 29 July 1922, and is buried in the Cooroy Cemetery. At almost 80 years of age, on Friday 10 June 1938 James passed away in the Cooroy Private Hospital. The funeral took place at the Cooroy Cemetery and the Methodist Reverend W. Lawton officiated at the graveside.

The McGrath family is today remembered as a pioneer family of Cooroy and the incredible lives they lived are truly valued by those who live here.

Art show captures the moment NOOSA Residential Care has played host to an art exhibition exploring works through the theme of nature.

The display was held on Wednesday 2 November and included works produced by residents of Leigh wing, a high-care dementia unit within the centre.

Diversional therapist Leah Sullivan facilitated the art therapy workshops that were designed to encourage self-expression through the processes of art production.

Ms Sullivan said the benefits of using this particular method of art therapy, in combination with reminiscence, validated the residents and their stories within context to others.

“It is also a way of demonstrating to them that they are capable of adding beauty to the world for others to enjoy,” she said.

MULTI-AWARD-WINNING local songstress Katie Noonan is preparing to see her vision to create a School of Rock come to life as local school children prepare for the night of their lives.

Nineteen students, as young as eight, will perform on stage alongside Katie, Jack Carty and Band of Frequencies after more than three months of auditions, training, mentoring and performing as part of the inaugural Eumundi School of Rock program.

The brainchild of Katie, the school aims to preserve the region’s culture and local talent and develop the natural instinct within children for a love of music.

“The Eumundi School of Rock will assist in the development of the children’s self-esteem, musicianship, stagecraft and performance and help develop attitudes necessary to progress in the music industry,” Katie said.

“It has been developed with strong regard to Eumundi’s mission to nurture youth culture and reignite its musical roots and build that community capacity in the area.”

After launching in August, the audition process delivered 19 aspiring musicians across a range of musical disciplines from drums to bass, keys, brass, guitar and singing.

The students have been receiving free weekly tutoring and ongoing support from the award-winning songstress Katie, plus Darren Percival and School of Rock teachers from Band of Frequencies including guitarist/vocalist Shannon Sol Carroll, bassist/trumpeter Owen Newcomb, pianist Andrew Szumowski, drummer Alice Jones and National Jazz Awardwinning Saxophonist, Zac Hurren.

Katie said this has helped the students gain the confidence needed to perform in front of their peers, along with self-discipline and real life gig experience.

“The hard work will culminate in concert at the end of the project period each year and for our first year, we are very excited to have three student bands performing alongside myself, Jack Carty and The Band of Frequencies,” she said.

The project has been possible through the support of volunteers, local schools, businesses and professional organisations including Eumundi Combined Community Organisation

Capitals driving prices crazy THE number of homes selling for at least $2 million has trended substantially higher over recent years, largely driven by the Sydney and Melbourne housing markets.

While a home selling for or in excess of $1 million was once the domain of the wealthy and indicative of the luxury housing market, sales of or in excess of $1 million are fast becoming much more regular.

Over recent years there has also been a substantial rise in sales of homes at or above $2 million however, they remain a much smaller proportion of overall sales than sales between $1 million and $2 million.

CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said perhaps $2 million is the new $1 million?

According to CoreLogic’s latest data, over the 12 months to June 2016, there were 11,319 houses and units sold nationally for at

least $2 million.

Mr Kusher said statistics showed there had been some decline over recent months however, this could also be reflective of some transaction details having not yet come through.

Over the previous 12 months, there were 10,668 dwellings sold for at least $2 million, 10 years earlier there were 3254 sales and 20 year earlier there were just 236 sales.

“Sales of properties at a price point above $2 million are becoming a much more regular occurrence in Sydney and Melbourne while they are much rarer elsewhere in the country,” he said.

“This is just another example how the cost of housing in our two largest capital cities is detaching itself from the rest of the country.”

Great wall WHATEVER happened to the easy laid-back lifestyle that was once synonymous with Noosa? The few local residents, fishermen and farmers used to tolerate the surfers when they first came here, girls used to go topless on Noosa main beach, and there were nudists at Tea Tree bay.

People now complain about dogs, joggers, bicycles, parking, bats, nudists, piles of rocks, and the list goes on. One of the reasons for this change of attitude is probably from retirees from down south importing their conservative political and social ideas.

Let’s make Noosa great again! Let’s build a wall, a great wall. Then when people head north looking for some sun for a few years before they die, they can bypass Noosa, and take their love of aerial ping-pong and conservative agendas up to the true home of the nearly-dead, Hervey Bay. Lobb unproductive Mr JOHN Lobb’s published letters to Noosa Today, to the end of October 2016, on the continuing poor performance of Noosa Council, number 10 which is 50 per cent down on the previous year. This is way behind schedule and shows a complete lack of commitment from Mr Lobb to the woes of Noosa and Noosa Council.

A huge improvement is required in the last couple of months of 2016 for Mr Lobb to improve this poor performance. There is also a marked lack of support for Mr Lobb from Jeff (True Blue) Nuske whose performance in the letter writing department this year has been pitiful.

Maybe Jeff is staring to see the light and realise Noosa Council is actually doing a good job.

I have lived in Noosa for 12 years and I continue to be amazed that Noosa prospers and grows in spite of Messrs Lobb and Nuske’s ongoing doomsday predictions. Is there something I, and I am sure many others, are missing?

On another subject could you please wrap up the global warming debate from Steve Hall, Phillip Rutherford and others. This has been going on now for at least two years and from what I can see is no further advanced than when the first letter was written. One group says “we are right and you are wrong” and the other group says the same thing. I suggest that these people exchange their e-mail addresses and carry on this debate in private instead of boring the majority of readers with their so-called “scientific knowledge on global warming.”

Just the facts THANKYOU to Gary Cox (RN), (Noosa Today, 3 November), for some relevant information re the local palliative care residences, past and present. Two other letters in the same edition, were light-on for facts but very liberal with, in my reading, what bordered on abuse.

I have no connection with the former Katie Rose Cottage, other than being a friend of some former volunteers. My understanding is that it closed because it ran out of money!

“Illegal", means against the law; in this case, re the equipment in question, I would suggest company law. An establishment set up legally must be terminated legally. All assets would have to be disposed of formally, not handed over to the next interested party.

Dr Lewins as chairman would be responsible for this. And be seen to be acting within the law. His reward for this, is as he is also a volunteer, is snide innuendo and aspersion.

Different version AS SECRETARY of the former steering committee of the Noosa Community Biosphere Association and present adviser to the association, I need to correct some of Bob Jarvis’s surprising comments about NCBA (Noosa Today, 10 November). Let’s compare his comments with the facts.

Bob was not voted off the steering committee. In October 2015 the first general meeting was held and the whole steering committee relinquished their positions. Some, including Bob, sought re-election. There was a large field of candidates and the meeting was well attended.

In terms of Department of Justice rules regarding voting, a secret ballot was ethically conducted and the results audited before being announced.

Bob was not successful. Voting figures are available upon request.

Bob incorrectly comments on monies given to NCBA being, he says, an initial $10,000 establishment sum plus three grants amounting to $60,000 i.e. a total of $70,000 and asks where is it all. The actual total amount was $30,000 of which $10,000 from council was an arrangement to enable NCBA to not charge membership fees to help the community. Those funds were used for office and other set-up costs including insurance and some of that remains.

The other $20,000 was one grant from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, which funds are being used for production of an ef-

fective video, development of the website and facebook pages and for community education expenses. All details have been audited and the balance of the bank account as at 30.06.2016 was $7039.

Bob comments about “street parties” and says there have not been any. NCBA calls their successful educational programs, about the biosphere, engagement meetings. As at 31 October, 12 meetings had been completed throughout the shire with the engaged attendance totalling 413. Many of those persons commented on their new knowledge obtained about the Biosphere. Financial cost to NCBA was negligible.

A further 19 meetings within the shire are being planned into the New Year. The projected attendance from all these meetings is estimated at 1000.

Doonella House in Tewantin is fully operative, Bob, with both NCBA and NBRL holding their meetings there. Committees of both entities are functioning well. The working project part of NCBA has been going for only a little over a year. Much has been achieved; it all needs time to grow.

Bob again states concerns about the mythical $180k. I comment that answers concerning the principles of that have been given in writing in the media several times over the last 15 or so months by other people and also at two meetings I have attended when Bob was there. The question recurs from Bob, with different words used each time.

Who’s right on rights?

(MEMBER for Noosa) Glen (Elmes) has once again shown that he and his party care for our children and heterosexual marriage as being what is best for our society and children as Queensland Labor forces through the so-called “rights" of same-sex couples to adopt children, what a disgrace.

I see the usual suspect Robin Bristow now calling those that uphold family values as “teaming up with bigots and homophobes and actively promoting discrimination” demanding that Glen should resign.

Perhaps Mr Bristow should check the election results that show the LNP polled 1,084,000 votes in the last election whilst Labor gained just 983,000 votes. Labor is only in government because the independent speaker Wellington went for the speaker’s position to give Labor a minority government.

Mr Bristow I hold to Christian values and the values of heterosexual marriage and the nurturing of children in this relationship as being the most beneficial for our children and society.

I am yet to find how two women in a relationship or two men in a relationship can produce a child so they should not be able to “adopt" as the children should be supported by the state (government) in what is best for them.

The state should also support the glue of our society being heterosexual marriage but I see that the left, marxist, green ideology does not hold to this so has rejected the opportunity for the silent majority to vote in a plebiscite (the Labor Party and the Greens having rejected the opportunity for the general population to vote at a plebiscite in the Federal Parliament this week).

Perhaps I should invoke my rights under Section 18c of the discrimination act for being vilified by you but I won’t as I don’t believe in name calling and accept that free speech and the values of heterosexual marriage are what is best for a free and fair society. I look forward to the next election where I hope sanity will prevail.

DOGS of all colours, ages and sizes almost outnumbered actors on stage at a recent rehearsal for the forthcoming RSPCA charity performance - Under Milk Woods.

The actors and RSPCA volunteers brought their dogs to the Noosa Arts Theatre for a photoshoot to promote the performance of Under Milkwood next Wednesday 23 November to raise funds for the charity.

As an integral component of efforts by the Noosa Arts Theatre to support community causes, 50 per cent of the $40 tickets, which include a light supper at interval, will be donated to one of Australia’s pre-eminent animal welfare associations, the Noosa RSPCA. They will also run a raffle on the night where all monies will go to the RSPCA. The prizes are a bottle of Moet and a $50 voucher to Padstows at Noosa Junction or a $100 voucher for Bob Jane T-Mart.

LOCAL producers are ready to take on the world after returning from the world’s largest food fair in Italy last month.

Representatives from Cooloola Berries, Buchi Kombucha and Kin Kin’s Black Ant Gourmet were part of the Slow Food Australia contingent at the Terra Madre festival where more than half a million foodies from 160 countries explored six kilometres of food stalls, workshops, demonstrations and tasting areas in the streets, squares and parklands of one of Europe’s most stunning cities, Turin.

For Kim and Jason Lewis from Cooloola Berries it was an adventure of a lifetime and their first trip to Europe where they met, spoke and exchanged ideas with likeminded producers from all around the world. “I was in awe of the historical beauty and significance of the sights we were seeing. I was experiencing things that I only learnt about in school,� Kim said.

addle your own canoe NOOSA Outrigger Canoe Club is inviting the community, local gyms and sport clubs to ‘Come and Try’ outrigger canoeing this Sunday in Noosaville.

Outrigger canoeing is a growing sport, with more and more people recognising it as an exciting and action-packed water sport.

A sport for both women and men of all ages, The Noosa Outrigger Club is the second largest in Australia with competitive paddlers aged from their thirties to eighties.

Noosa competes in the South Queensland zone for both 0C1 and OC2 (one and two person canoes) and the separate OC6 racing series, as well as other races throughout the state and Internationally.

Racing is generally in the ocean, which provides thrilling conditions, and this year Noosa paddlers have also competed in World and National titles, as well as the recent Pan Pacific Masters.

The competitors have achieved excellent results and podium finishes throughout all the year's races.

If this sounds like a sport that you would like to try, then come along by yourself, with a friend or grab your clubmates and join in the ‘Come and Try’ session on Sunday 20 November.

Meet at Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club, Chaplin Park, Mill Street Noosaville (across the bridge from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club) bewtween10am-1pm for a great morning on the water.

Moving ceremony by young student leaders NEWLY appointed school leaders at Noosa District State High School have been praised for proudly representing the school at a moving Remembrance Day Ceremony in Cooroy on Friday 11 November.

The students joined a large group of community members and showed much respect and reverence for the

commemoration.

Principal Chris Roff and acting junior school deputy principal Murray Gordon also attended the laying of wreaths ceremony at the Cooroy cenotaph.

“Chris and I were very proud of these great kids,“ Mr Gordon said.

MANY years ago, when we lived in an apartment in the charming village of Guethary on the Basque coast of France, Brian Kennelly, a surfing buddy from Kauai, phoned me to ask if we could look after his young daughter who was having a crack at the women’s pro surfing tour and would be competing in Biarritz.

This was how we met Keala Kennelly, a spikey-haired grommet with boundless energy and a wicked sense of humour. She was outrageous and we loved her immediately. She took over the spare bedroom but was rarely in it, surfing all day and painting the town red by night. I thought she was too much of a party animal to be a committed surfer, until I went surfing with her.

When Guethary was firing, there was no shortage of good surfers in the water, but Keala blew them all away.

She was like Lisa Anderson, Layne Beachley and Pam Burridge wrapped up in one fiery little package. She ripped.

I was in awe of her that day, and I was in awe of her again last weekend when she and 11 other women made history competing in the World Surf League’s first ever women’s big wave

tour event in monstrous surf at Jaws (Peahi) on the island of Maui. Of course Keala has been renowned as a fearless big wave rider for several years now - having picked up the mantle from Layne Beachley who pioneered women’s big wave riding on the North Shore of Oahu back in the ‘90s - and her cavernous barrel at Tea’hupoo won the XXL Big Wave award earlier this year, but it still stunned me to see her and the other girls - including Australia’s Laura Enever and Felicity Palmateer - paddling out into a wind-whipped line-up with sets as high and thick as city office blocks.

Social media chit-chat between misogynist male surfers contended that the girls should not have been out there, and indeed, three of the finalists, including Keala and Laura, were unable to compete after copping such a thrashing in the heats.

But hey, there were out there, and they were riding giants. I’m not sure how big the experts were calling it, although I did hear the WSL commentators talking about 40 foot faces.

In my world, where double overhead is bloody big and triple is ridiculous, I’d call it sextuple overhead.

Home girl Paige Alms from Maui took out the title, making it down the face of two absolute bombs in the final, while WA’s Felicity Palmateer was the highest-finishing Aussie, showing the grits she learnt riding Cow Bommie in the wild west.

I confess I didn’t get much work done on Wednesday. I channel-flicked between CNN and Fox News like a ghoul watching a train wreck.

As soon as the vote count started, I suspected that the forces of reason and sanity in America were in trouble, and so it proved as Hillary’s blue wall came tumbling down and the least qualified person to ever run for the office became the leader of the free world.

Of course now that the reality show of running for president is over, Donald Trump will begin the reality show of governing, running a mile from all the stupid election promises he made but never meant to keep.

There will be no Mexican wall, he won’t touch trade with China and nor will he force Muslim Americans underground.

I doubt whether he’ll even go topless horseback riding with Putin, but he might.

As night turned into the early morning in New York City, I was reminded of a presidential election long ago, when we sat in a hot tub in a forest in Marin County, California, and drank champagne as the numbers came in for a boofheaded actor turned politician called Ronald Reagan.

The Americans in the tub were actually crying that night, but in fact Reagan turned out to be nowhere near as bad a president as was feared.

Silver medal for bowlers FIFTEEN Tewantin Noosa bowlers headed to Nerang for the Division 5 Pennant play-offs on Friday 5 November, returning with the silver medal.

The Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club faced off against teams including Burleigh Heads, Aspley Memorial, Glasshouse Country, Enoggera and Jindalee with play starting early on the Friday against Burleigh Heads on the synthetic greens.

Tewantin Noosa won 53/28 with the feature being a big win by the Gary Moss team. The second round against Aspley Memorial was on the grass with a green running at approximately 18 seconds (green keeper estimate) in hot and very windy conditions.

Although Tewantin Noosa won two rinks, the Daryl Birt team did

not handle the conditions and could not match some excellent bowling

by Aspley Memorial. The side lost 36/47.

The third game was back on the synthetic against Glasshouse Country. After a very close tussle all of the rinks were decided by two shots - unfortunately two of the rinks were losses. The end result was a loss 42/44.

The leading teams after the first day's play were Burleigh Heads, Aspley Memorial and Enoggera each with two wins.

Tewantin Noosa committed to winning both games on Sunday and with much kinder playing conditions the team came back from a +29 margin.

The draw for the final game was against Jindalee, a competitive side

with some very narrow losses in the earlier rounds.

In the end, Tewantin Noosa performed very well beating the top team by a handsome margin, but inexplicably losing to the bottom team by two shots at the end of day one.

Running second in a very strong field was just reward for some good bowls despite sore feet and aching muscles.

Player Daryl Birt said a “huge thanks” to the club who assisted with costs and to Kerry Donohue as side manager and David Hawksford as driver.

“A big thank you also to our reserves who were there when we needed them. It is not easy sitting on the bench and having only limited opportunities to play,” he said.

Dolphins will soon see the light FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, this week announced the Coalition Government will invest $20,000 towards the installation of new lighting at the Noosa District Rugby Club, home of the Noosa Dolphins.

“The new LED lighting will enable night training and competitions, and I’m pleased the Coalition Government is contributing to this project that will benefit Noosa communities,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The lighting, that will be cheaper to operate, will improve the amenity of the field, providing a safer, less hazardous playing environment and playing conditions at night.

“Better lighting will also increase the playing time so that training, matches and competitions can be played in cooler evening temperatures.

“The club also anticipates that the new lighting will attract other sports to use the oval and allow it to host other events and activities.

“The Noosa Dolphins is a great club in an idyllic setting and the new lighting will further enhance its reputation for excellence.”

HOT days, the threat of storms - and finally receiving one - has certainly kept the fish interested.

Starting at the lower reaches of the river has seen whiting taken on worms around Munna Point and the Dog beach stretching down to the current line at the start of Woods Bay. If you do like to top water fish then make sure you give this area a go as it is easily accessible on foot.

Trevally are being caught in Woods Bay on surface lures like the River2sea skinny dog 65mm. Try to create a pulsing action while retrieving, followed by a pause, has seen to be getting the better strike rate.

Up the river further, the stretch between the lakes has seen school jewfish averaging around the 65cm mark and mangrove jack still being caught on live poddy mullet and herring, and if wanting to toss a lure around be sure to use a suspended type of lure such as the Zerek Tango Shad 69mm. Flathead have been taken while drifting baby blues or white bait over the shallows in the Frying Pan area and down to Munna Point.

The windy weather has certainly kept the offshore fishing during the week to a minimum with a surprise on Saturday producing glassed out conditions. Those who did get out have seen nice size Moses perch, snapper and pearl perch on North Reef.

Further south - down to Sunshine Reef - has seen the coral trout starting to bite the usual additional species such as sweetlip and tusk fish.

If wanting a feed of jewfish, maori cod and good-sized squire head to Chardons where these fish have been taken on whole pilchards and squid. If heading to the banks make sure you try the middle section on the high spots around 30 to 40 metres, as these have started to produce the famous red spot emperor.

The beaches have seen a few tailor still showing their heads on the incoming tide.

The shallow water gutters have been the location where the whiting are been taken.

If chasing some pan size dart, the gutters on the incoming tide and the white water one the edge of the gutter have been where the fish are caught.

New program is launched Between the

WHEN an organisation such as our Noosa Seahorse Nippers is founded and becomes successful, that is only the start.

For once this goal is achieved, to maintain the standard requires even more work and above all new ideas; and this is exactly what the Noosa people and their support teams have done. Last Thursday at 6pm, Steve and Nicole Mawby, along with coach Tim Mandeville, met with some twenty parents at the Noosa club to brief them on a new concept that will be introduced into the Seahorse Nippers.

This is aimed at giving some of the more experienced and older members the opportunity to be integrated into the Noosa Nippers.

A highlight of the evening was when parents were handed photographic manuals that will play a major part in the visual training for the children.

When the personal coaching techniques were explained it showed that every aspect needed to make the integration a happy experience was indeed well covered.

To enable them to do so with confidence, at 6am on Friday, a swim and board clinic was held on Noosa's Main Beach for these Nippers.

Under the supervision of coach Tim all went well.

Two mothers who were in attendance, Jo Debnam and Jackie Guthrie, said they were both very happy with the program and the coaching.

“Both of us are here for the pilot program,” Jo said, “and what they are doing now gives them a great opportunity to move into the mainstream Nippers.”

Once again our surf club Water Safety Patrols were kept busy.

On Saturday morning Sunshine Beach and Noosa provided Rescue Board and IRB Patrols to cover the swimmers taking part in the World Series Swims. These were conducted at Noosa's Main Beach.

The roster saw Sunshine doing the Board and Noosa the IRB patrols.

The swims, of which there were four, were conducted over a distance of 1klm, 2klm, 3klm and 5klm. No incidents were reported by the patrols.

This is yet another example of the good working relationship between our two local clubs. Once again our clubs are working together to provide a community service.

Last weekend on Mooloolaba Beach, Round 2 of the Fastest Man on Sand was held and we saw a great performance from the Sunshine Beach competitors.

Their results are good news, for it has been many long seasons since Sunshine was strong on the beach. These results show signs of a real resurgence.

In the Girls Under 14s, Charlotte Crow won gold in the sprint; and the relay team consisting of Charlotte Crow, Megan Webber, Josie Webber and Audrey Holt won bronze.

In the Under 17 division, Kate Gleeson won two bronze medals, one in the sprint final and her second in the flags.

In the same division for Boys, Tom Baker won a bronze in the flags.

There were other great performances with team members finishing in fourth and fifth places. Well done to coach Pauline Gleeson; this is just the start.

Once again the silence of the evening for the Emergency Response Group has been shattered by a phone call. This time it was in response to a call out regarding a lost hang glider reported missing somewhere in the Rainbow Beach area.

Despite conducting search patterns from two rescue vehicles, along North Shore and into Rainbow areas from the early hours of Saturday evening through to 4am Sunday, there was no sign of the glider.

The search patterns were conducted by Chris Grandemange (team leader), Bryce and Keating Grandemange and Joe Cirillo.

Unfortunately, on Sunday morning, helicopter patrols found the person deceased, inland from the beach area.

Squad keeps up the medal haul

By Omar Bakhach LAST Saturday, 21 junior beach sprint competitors from Noosa SLSC beach squad travelled to Mooloolaba to compete against some of the best in Queensland for Round 2 of ‘The Fastest Man on Sand’ (FMOS) competition.

After a very successful Round 1 at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast two weeks earlier, the team stamped their authority on the competition at Mooloolaba coming away with seven gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronze medals.

Each of the competitors, who range in age from Under 11 to Under 14, put their training into practice in their respective individual and team

events to make a sound statement to other junior beach teams competing on the day.

Noosa Beach coach Omar Bakhach said: "All members of the squad performed outstandingly, and with such great results it is difficult to single out any individuals, however a special mention must go to Under 13 girl Amy Kibble and Under 14 boy Kai Thompson."

By the end of competition, Kibble had secured three gold medals - one each in the beach sprint, beach flags and Under 13 female relay, as well as a bronze in the All Age relay, while Thompson took two individual gold medals in flags and sprints and a bronze in the All Age relay.

Contenders step up sport today

For the fifth year in a row, Damien Smith, known affectionately to one and all as “Butch’’ will organise and promote the Contender of the Codes, a night of boxing; to be held at the Leisure Centre Noosaville Wallace Drive, this Saturday 19 November.

Tickets are available and the doors open at 6pm.

This is always a night with a difference, for the contestants are not drawn from world rankings, but from the various football codes around town; and is on occasions a case of Mate vs Mate. If last year's event is any indication then we can rest assured that it will be a sell-out.

One of the reasons for the tournament is to give our footballers an opportunity to move into a different world of training.

The tournament will be run like a round-robin type draw, with the fighters having the chance to have a couple of fights. It will be a winner vs winner, in some cases even a loser vs loser.

It will be another great night and each event will be properly matched and the fights will be under the control of referee, local boxing coach and former professional National Champion, Israel Kani.

For Israel, the referee's job will not be his only commitment, for some contestants have been using Israel's gym - known as the NBO (Noosa Box Office) - for their pre-

The feedback regarding The Young Guns Boxing Tournament at Cooroy, proudly hosted by the Impact Boxing Academy, has been good.

Local fans said they were very impressed and will continue to support the tournament, and most important of all, visiting coaches said they will definitely return.

CONTENDER OF THE CODES 2016

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the outstanding performance of Impact Academy's Tyler Blizzard.

Fighting in the 51kg division, Tyler stopped his much bigger opponent when he was unable to come out for the second round. Such was his display of body punching, speed and fitness that many at ring-side have tipped him for a place on the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games.

As a result of his display, Tyler

has been booked for a major fight in Sydney on 9 December against Josh English.

English, who carries good credentials winning Australian titles and boxing on the Australian team for the world championships in Doha 2015, will certainly be a tough opponent.

Tyler is fully aware of what he is up against when he said: “This fight will be my biggest test today.”
