“It’s something you wouldn’t wish on anyone, and he was doing a hell of a good job,” Cr Cliff said, adding that he and the council wished Mr Callanan a speedy recovery.

STREETON Ward councillor Noel Cliff has been elected as Yarra Ranges Council’s mayor for the coming year, with Walling Ward councillor Len Cox as his deputy.

The pair were elected to the top roles on Tuesday 8 November, one week after the formal announcement of the council election results.

Cr Cliff received six votes from his fellow councillors for the role, running against Lyster Ward councillor Mike Clarke.

Cr Cox nominated Cr Cliff for the role, and said he had “the integrity that’s needed” for the job.

“Certainly, Cr Cliff is full of that, and he actually works so well with the community,” he said.

“I think that, when he walks into a room ... people are just happy to see him come in, and that’s such a good sight to see with a potential mayor.”

Cr Cliff said it would be “really cool” to be elected as mayor, that he would represent the nine councillors and speak on their behalf.

Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister nominated Cr Clarke as a mayoral candidate and said he had the “commitment and presence” and a “whole of municipality and community focus”, among other qualities.

“I’ve seen and I know there will be many who share those views,” she said.

“We’ve got two great candidates tonight to choose from, and it really is a decision about your leader among leaders, who will lead us for the next 12 months.”

Cr Clarke said that, if elected, he would act with “leadership, teamwork, fairness and respect, negotiation and good governance” during the one-year term.

“I believe leadership is empowering other leaders around me,” he said.

“It’s certainly my aspiration to help you councillors get the best you can, out of your needs and your community.”

When it came to the vote, councillors Cliff, Cox, Terry Avery, Richard Higgins, Jim Child and Tim Heenan voted for Cr Cliff, while councillors Clarke, McAllister and Tony Stevenson voted for Cr Clarke, with Cr

Mail bags new award THE Mail hosted dozens of dignitaries from around the country last week at Healesville’s RACV Country Club, with the Victorian Country Press Association holding its annual conference in town.

On Thursday 10 and Friday 11 November, representatives of media outlets, newspapers, politicians, celebrities and VCPA members gathered at the country club for the

annual conference, with presenters speaking on the valley, wine, wildlife, and the future of journalism.

Wine critic James Halliday, acting director of Healesville Sanctuary Dr Rupert Baker and former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons were some of the speakers at the conference, which was hosted by the Mail News Group.

On Friday night, the conference officially ended with the VCPA’s annual awards night, where the Mountain Views Mail received the inaugural Road Safety Award, sponsored by the TAC. The award recognises excellence in road safety reporting that contributes towards the TAC’s Towards Zero campaign, which aims to reduce road fatalities and serious

injuries to zero.

Mail journalist Kath Gannaway’s article about the Healesville Community Bank’s Greenlight Drivers Program, which was held with Healesville High School VCAL students, made up the award-winning entry.

Last days for energy input

RENEWABLE energy in Yarra Glen will be up for debate until Tuesday night, following through on the recommendations of the recent Yarra Glen People’s Panel.

The council held a renewable energy community forum on Monday night at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall, discussing where 10 per cent of the proceeds of the sale of 39-41 Bell Street should be spent.

The panel, made up of community members, stated that the money should go into renewable energy projects, and the council has three proposed options and consultation open until midnight on Tuesday, 15 November.

The three options include solar panels placed on community facilities, to offset daytime power needs; a revolving fund for residents to install solar panels, where businesses and households pay back the cost over time; and a community-owned enterprise to manage a solar electricity plant, with power available to residents and businesses, and profits used to fund community projects.

The remainder of the proceeds from the sale will go towards the Yarra Glen Circuit River Walk, with the council endorsing the panel’s recommendations in June.

A FATHER and son team from Toolangi will drive 3800 kilometres in a clapped-out car in memory of Healesville’s Bryce Crow, as part of next year’s Shitbox Rally.

Paul and Bradley Van De Ven will drive a 20-year-old Ford Falcon from Adelaide to Cairns in 2017 as part of the rally, raising money for the Cancer Council along the way.

Mr Van De Ven told the Mail that the drive will be held in the memory of Healesville’s Bryce Crow, who died in November 2014 from melanoma.

“Bryce and I actually registered to do the Shitbox Rally for the Cancer Council in 2012,” he said.

“It took me four years to get in it’s restricted to 200 cars per year, and you’re only allowed two people per vehicle.”

In Bryce’s place, Mr Van De Ven’s 18-year-old son Bradley will be riding shotgun as the pair drive 3800km in a car worth less than $1000.

He said he picked up the car for $300, but it was not in working condition - after finding replacement parts and putting in some elbow grease with Bradley, the car is roadworthy, registered and ready to go.

To pay tribute to their friend, the car has a sticker of Bryce and “cruising for Crowy” along the side, along with Shitbox Rally and Cancer Council stickers.

Ahead of the rally, the pair is holding a fund-raising evening at the Toolangi Tavern on Friday, 18 November from 6.30pm.

Entry to the event is $40 per person, which covers a two-course meal, finger food and tea and coffee, with door prizes, raffles and games to be

Club on pre-war footing

By Jesse Graham A GROWING collection of pre-war Healesville Football Club memorabilia and history will be on display at Healesville Library until the end of the year, and the club is calling for donations.

The display cabinet at the Healesville Library at the Community Link on River Street is currently laden with historical notes, photographs, books and trophies from before 1945, which will be on display until the end of December.

Club historian Robert Nolan, who organised and set up the display, said the club had recently received information about players in the club before World War II, where records are scarce.

From notes to donated trophies, Mr Nolan has put up the display to try and document more of the club’s his-

tory, and to call for anyone who might have information or old memorabilia to come forward.

“In the 60s, the club decided we better start putting up some old records - a few of the old blokes said ‘Let’s start from ’45 onward,’ ... and that’s what they did, but there’s nothing pre,” Mr Nolan said.

“It’s going to take a lifetime to do.”

He said he had scoured history website Trove and items donated to the club to find out more about the club’s pre-war past, and had discovered one of the players had amassed five Best and Fairest medals - a record for the club.

He also discovered that two players, Len Phillips and George Potter, were life members of the old league - but has no details on whether they were life members of the Healesville club, and wants descendants or family members

“I have an inkling that they might be,” Mr Nolan said.

“If someone’s a life member of the club or something like that, it’s generally pretty well-known in the family -

it’s a great honour, and it’s something that you just don’t forget.”

Hefty fines for bin fire BEHAVIOUR that may be dismissed as a prank could have much bigger implications for the community and perpetrators, according to police and CFA. Healesville police are investigating incidents where wheelie bins were set alight behind the IGA supermarket at Coldstream last week.

A number of bins were set alight on Thursday night, 10 November, in two separate incidents, and again on Saturday night, 12 November when three bins were targeted.

Coldstream CFA Captain Sean Bethell said while the bins were not close to a building, they were close to paddocks which border the residential area and hundreds of houses.

“If this sort of thing continued into summer, it has the potential to cause considerable problems,” Captain Bethell said.

“Grass fires are very fast moving and can develop extremely quickly, compared to a scrub or bushfire, and they can cause a lot of damage,” he said.

“I would say that police would be taking this type of offence to the full length of the law, and if this happens during the fire danger period, there are quite hefty fines, and the prison sentences that are quite severe as well.”

At Wandin Yallock, Mount Evelyn RSL Vice-President, Jim Hurley, spoke saying Remembrance Day was not about the supposed ‘glories’ of war but about honouring the ideals of those who fought, and fight for, Australia and their determination to uphold them.

Newly-elected Yarra Ranges’ Cr Tony Stevenson, also spoke noting that many of those who went to war were fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and uncles.

Locally, he said they included farmers, blacksmiths and labourers.

“The loss of so many was felt deeply in our community and, sadly, some families and farms never recovered from their loss,” he said.

He observed that so many were only six or seven years older than some of the schoolchildren attending the service.

At Healesville, the service finished with the Healesville High School band performing a classic rendition of “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, colloquially regarded as ‘the song that won the war’.

A MIX of young and old came together at Remembrance Day services across the Yarra Valley on Friday, November 11, to recognise the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers in World War I and those who have served and are still serving in the Australian Defence Force.

Friday marked the 98th year since the guns fell silent along the Western Front, marking the end of World War I. At 11am on November 11, those gathered at memorials from Healesville to Yarra Glen, Marysville to Warburton and beyond to Wandin Yallock, fell silent too with a minute’s silence to remember and honour Australia’s fallen soldiers.

At Healesville, guest speakers included Glenn Mitchell, a captain in the Australian Army, and wellknown Wandin poet Jim Brown who delivered a moving poem by C.J. Dennis titled “A Gallant Gentleman.”

Trapping boxes for tagging

By Jesse Graham THE work of Yellingbo’s Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater will be able to continue with ease, with the men at Badger Creek’s Men Shed donating their time to repair and create equipment.

The team at the Men’s Shed, including president John Layton and vice-president Mario Herodotus worked with the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FOHH) to repair trapping boxes and create new carry boxes, to help their work with the critically endangered animal.

Mr Layton and Mr Herodotus gave the 12 trapping boxes and six carry boxes to FOHH members Sue Tardif and Bob Anderson on Wednesday 9 November.

Ms Tardif said the trapping and carry boxes were essential for the group’s work, in tagging birds and taking them to receive veterinary care.

“We had two birds with injuries out in the wild, and these are our breeding birds and there’s only 23 to 25 breeding pairs at the moment, and those two birds ... needed to be taken to the vet really quickly,” she said.

“If we don’t have these trapping boxes and transport boxes, we can’t do it and if we didn’t get them to the vet quickly, they would have died.

“It’s that critical.”

Mr Herodotus said the six carry boxes were made by hand at the shed, with the first box taking about 30 hours of work to perfect.

“By the time I made the sixth box, they were being made in about two days.

“It got better as I went along.”

The carry boxes stack onto one another and feature Velcro straps and rubber linings, to help protect the birds as they are being transported.

The men at the shed also repaired 12 trapping boxes, which

are used with food to capture Helmeted Honeyeaters so they can be tagged, checked or transported.

“It’s brilliant,” Ms Tardif said.

“Seriously, we couldn’t do it without the help.”

FOHH president Bob Anderson said the boxes were an important part of the group’s maintenance works, and that they were delivered just in time for breeding season.

“The men’s shed was just the answer to our prayer,” he said.

The co-operative on Mt Toolebewong between Healesville and Don Valley, is off-thegrid, embracing solar and wind energy along with alternative building methods.

The installation of the Thinair 102 by New Zealand company Powerhouse Wind is a first for Australia.

One of the team of engineers behind the turbine, Powerhouse engineer Bill Currie, teamed up with Eltham renewable energy

electrician and installer, Trevor Robotham to make it happen on ‘the big island’.

Moora Moora pioneer Peter Cock said the turbine was a celebration of 40 years of living off the grid, and alternative living innovation on the mountain.

“This system provides power for five houses in this cluster,” he explained, obviously excited to be breaking new ground.

“We’ve been experimenting since we first set up the co-op up here and there’s no doubt that renewable energy is much more reliable than the grid.

“When all of Healesville is out, as seems to be happening more and more, we still have power up here,” he said.

Mr Currie said the Thinair was specifically designed for domestic use, and based on research was asking wind turbine owners what would stop them buying a new one.

“Noise was top of the list, so the single blade makes the rotor very quiet,” he said.

He said good performance, reliability, aesthetics and, because of proximity to houses, survival in high winds, were other criteria.

Mr Cock said the new wind turbine complemented the cluster’s solar system enabling them to make the most of the elements year-round, day and night.

THE CFA and therefore public safety have sadly been marginalised by the Andrews Government in the ongoing union dispute; their positions ignored.

After all, in time, the public will be the judge of your credibility.

Your status in society will be diminished if your comments lack that credibility.

ANOTHER State Government bizarre decision relating to the Yellingbo Conservation Area along the Yarra River and its tributaries.

This time, Haining Farm in Don Valley is to be included and ‘revegetated’ for wildlife.

This 69-hectare farm was gifted to the government as an educational working farm to give groups, especially school children, the opportunity to experience a working farm, in particular dairy farming.

DELWP has now earmarked the site and it will become covered in native bushland wilderness and a huge fire risk as the original site in Yellingbo is now.

In short, the children of Victoria will lose the chance to experience a unique Australian farming culture and the families of the Don Valley will be subjected to an even higher bushfire potential.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP - will you come to the Yarra Valley to see what you are about to create?

Will you come and protect our children and defend our homes if this revegetation of 69 hectares catches fire as the north/west summer winds take hold, or will you still be working on your bushfire management plan?

Over 230 families live in Don Valley and all those families, together with a primary school, would be impacted on if a wild fire started in Haining Farm.

My family is one of those.

Fire nightmare THE extension of the Yellingbo Conservation Area with the planting of forests along the Yarra River and its tributaries is shaping up to be a potential nightmare of increased bushfire risk for the residents of the Upper Yarra Valley.

Many towns and settlements, with schools, businesses and sporting clubs, exist close to these rivers.

They, too, will be threatened.

The potential for devastation is frightening.

Minister D’Ambrosio has stated that “bushfire safety and preparedness is at the forefront of her government’s mind”, yet she intends to subject innocent families to further fire threat with these forested river banks.

Her department had not even implemented a fire risk assessment until the Yarra Waterways Group became involved and forced their hand.

Have Premier Andrews and Minister D’Ambrosio forgotten the lives lost during the Black Saturday and Ash Wednesday fires?

Lens Fusion

By Kath Gannaway YARRA Valley photographers Kim Wormald, Greg Carrick and Joy Phillips, come at their craft from very different perspectives, but fuse them together and you have a collection of works that are not only stunningly beautiful, but innovative, creative and exciting.

‘Fusion - Nature Through the Lens’ opened at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead in Wandin on Saturday, 12 November.

The artists have taken inspiration from the natural world around them.

Kim is an award-winning, ethical bird photographer, producing pure images of birds in their natural habitat that highlight the detail of their plumage

and personalities.

Listed in the International Who’s Who of Nature Photographers, her images have received multiple national and international awards.

“I love the fine detail that can be savoured in high definition images,” Kim said. That detail is exemplified not only in the intricate feather patterns, but in details as fine as a glint in the eye or tiny hairs and a thread of saliva, gleaming in the light, between open beak of an eagle.

Greg’s works are about transforming life photos into evocative memories.

Many have found their genesis in the 2009 bushfires, others draw their inspiration from childhood experiences, such as bathing boxes along the beach.

“It’s about capturing memories, looking back and creating a more one-dimensional work that reflects your memory of a place in time,” Greg said of those particular works.

Joy combines both natural photography and manipulated pieces to create artworks with a story.

A number of the works in the Fusion exhibition are from her Kaleidescope series, creating an abstract image of colour and shape, often the unexpected and delightful product of happenstance.

ON Sunday, 20 November, residents from around the valley will come together for a remembrance event, riding the Warburton Trail to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

The fourth annual Ride to Remember will be held from 10.30am on Sunday, 20 November, bringing people together to ride or walk the Warburton to Lilydale Rail Trail for a fundraiser in remembrance of Anne Jones.

Anne’s daughter, Kylie Jones, said the weather forecast was looking good for Sunday’s ride, which she hoped would put the grand fund-raising total to more than $20,000 over the four years.

All the money raised during the ride, from registration fees and donations, will go to Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria in memory of Anne, who passed away in 2012 from Lewy body disease.

“After Mum passed away ... of course, we were extremely devastated and sad, but wanted to turn it into a positive experience, to remember Mum and also to do something positive to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Australia,” Kylie said.

Those after the full ride can start at Wandin at 10.30am for a 55 kilometre ride, with a 34km ride starting from Woori Yallock at 11.15am, a 17km ride starting at Yarra Junction at 11.45am and a 6km ride starting at 12.15pm in Millgrove.

The barbecue lunch, sponsored by Eric Insurance, will be

held from 12.30pm at the Warburton Recreation Reserve, and riders are asked to be at their starting point 15 minutes before the start of the ride.

“Even if they don’t ride a bike, they can walk,” Kylie said.

“It’s relaxed, it’s not competitive, kids are there and families are there.”

A fit mark of respect for Anne

The art of the equine AN EXHIBITION of detailed horse paintings was opened on the weekend at Healesville’s Art Framed Gallery, with detailed works hanging on the walls until the end of the month.

The Horse Collective, launched on Saturday, 12 November, has works by Amanda Lithgow, Di King, Julie Ricketts and Lynette Orzlowski adorning the walls of the Art Framed Gallery at Level 2, 252 A Maroondah Highway.

About 30 works, each depicting horses in different mediums and paints, are being exhibited on the gallery walls until 27 November.

Ms Orzlowski said the idea for an exhibition came up between the four artists in years past, before being organised earlier in the year.

“At the start of this year, Di and Julie rocked up and started talking about it again, and we said ‘Let’s see what we’ve got available’,” she said.

The works vary from closeups to scenic paintings and racing scenes, with mediums such as pastel, acrylic, charcoal and airbrushing.

THE Accountant is an engaging but very messily-written thriller.

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is an accountant with high-functioning autism who makes a living correcting the finances of crime organisations, and must go on the run after exposing some shady dealings in a robotics company.

The Accountant excels in its acting and action, but the plot is ridiculous.

As someone who has had personal experience with autism, I was impressed by the

film’s accurate portrayal of this condition.

The film never relies on stereotypes of autistics as naive, childlike or robotic.

Wolff may be socially withdrawn and direct to the point of occasional tactlessness, but he’s still stable, genuinely emotional and competent - deadly, in fact.

Affleck delivers a compelling performance of subtle, precise intensity, and really nails the behavioural traits of autism: obsessive focus, affinity for order, certain compulsive acts and vocal rhythms.

Wolff develops a moving bond with accountant Dana Cummings, played by the ever-

perky Anna Kendrick, and the film contains poignant flashbacks to Wolff’s strict upbringing. The action is also visceral and well-choreographed.

But the pacing is limp, and the twists are a mixed bag that nearly sink the film.

There is one surprising, effective twist about Wolff’s connection to a certain secondary antagonist, but the twist involving the US Agents hunting Wolff serves to render that entire sub-plot irrelevant.

The Accountant has some satisfying parts, but it’s ultimately a weak, convoluted whole.

Bloods made to work hard

By Chris Anderson ROUND 5 of cricket action around the Yarra Valley concluded on the weekend under steamy conditions.

But the players weren’t getting hot under the collar as a host of great team and individual performances highlighted a great day of cricket across all grades.

In the competition’s top grade, most will look at the final scores and knowingly nod their head as results fell as expected, but that would gloss over the fact that the contest between bat and ball was at its best on day two.

After finishing the first day in a heap, Seville look destined to have its hands full in holding off an outright assault from Healesville.

Chasing the Bloods’ 192, the home side was looking down the barrel after day one, collapsing to 5/17.

Right from ball one, Seville had brought a steely resolve to day two action, while its lower-order wasn’t about to let their side down.

Despite some early resistance from Tom Page and Matt Hadlum, which allowed Seville to get through the dangers of an early collapse, the visitors were able to eek the pair out in relatively good time.

At 7/47, the game was still open for Healesville to chase an outright result.

Enter Andy Di Pietro.

The ‘go to’ man for Seville to fill any hole, in any grade, found himself the right man to lift Seville out of the hole its top-order had dug.

Partnering with Michael Stevenson (24), the pair added some much-needed resolve to the innings over the next 22 overs.

Firstly, the pair added some muchneeded runs to the score; then, they were able to weather a testing spell of bowling from the slow bowling combination of Dylan Moore and Scott Hamer.

With the safety of avoiding the outright chase within Seville’s grasp, Stevenson lost his wicket.

With the game still to reach the tea interval, and the home side still over 100 runs from the target, a quick dismissal of the final two wickets would leave the door ajar for the outright result.

Di Pietro and Mark Sandfort navigated their way to the tea adjournment and, more importantly, lifted Seville’s total beyond the follow-on figure.

This important milestone seemingly changed the direction of the contest as Healesville struggled to maintain their intensity as the outright result was almost definitely out of the grasp, yet with only two wicket still to get, their chances of losing the game were still remote.

Despite his dogged resistance, Sandfort fell with the score on 118,

while the prospects of an early beverage looked the likely outcome.

With the end nigh, Di Pietro threw some caution to the wind.

With some attacking stroke play, he suddenly gave this innings some scoring momentum to match the tail’s dogged resistance.

After a 33-run dash, there would’ve been some nervous moments for the Bloods as their total emerged on the horizon.

But that glorious moment was short-lived for the home team as Di Pietro’s cameo came to an end on 67, leaving his team still 41 runs short of the target on 151.

Scott Hamer was the mainstay of the day two bowlers, with a steadying spell netting 3/43.

While wicket-less on day two, Dylan Moore added valuable support and still finished with an economical 3/15.

After securing first innings points on day one, all eyes were on Warburton-Millgrove and its approach to forging itself into a position for an outright result against a disappointing Yarra Junction.

The Burras elected to bat on.

On the back of a brilliant unbeaten century from Ben Lever, and well supported by Tim McKail (43), the Burras were able to extend the lead to 111 with the loss of only one more wicket.

This gave themselves enough time to chase quick wickets in a dash to secure the vital extra points that an outright victory rewards.

As so often is the case when facing outright defeat with the bat, after succumbing meekly in the first innings, a team finds some internal fortitude and are able to muster enough self pride to put some more value on their wickets.

And this was no different on this occasion for the embattled Eagles.

Anchored by a valuable unbeaten half-century from Pat Ford, the outright result was never in the frame.

Yarra Junction’s top-order was able to spend some valuable time in the middle as the game was closed with the score on 2/74.

The best contest of the round came at Mount Evelyn, as the home side had their work cut-out, holding out a patient, yet enthusiastic Yarra Glen.

After posting a considerable score of 266, Mount Evelyn struggled to make early impressions on the Yarra Glen line-up, who had set themselves for a long day at the wicket in pursuit of the runs.

David Brambrilla (25) and captain Brendan Ricci resumed where they left off on day one and expertly navigated through a tight opening spell from Mount Evelyn.

After an excellent partnership of 67, the pair looked well poised to capital-

ise on a lacklustre home team.

The introduction of Jed Thompson changed the speed of the game as he was able to remove Brambrilla, but a loose spell of bowling allowed the visitors to start building their score and arrest control of the contest.

With the game slipping, captain Kane Jones injected himself back into the attack.

This had immediate results as he was able to remove Mark Clare and end Ricci’s excellent innings three shy of a much-deserved half century.

Yarra Glen would, however, be unperturbed by the events and in quick time; the pairing of Richard Ellisdon and Lachlan Crawford was able to see the visitors to 4/146 at tea break.

Struggling to find spark and some disciplined bowling from his troops, Kane Jones looked to Chad Witherdin for some spark and enthusiasm and Chris Anderson for some steadying influence.

The pair delivered.

In the space of the 11 overs that followed the break, the pair were able to expertly remove the remaining six wickets for 11 runs to secure a 109-run victory which totally contradicted the flow of the game, especially on day two.

Anderson showed his experience with well-earned figures of 5/30, while Witherdin is proving himself to be a valuable finisher with 2/8, and the value of Jones’ extended spell with the ball can’t be underestimated as he netted 2/53.

Round 6 now offers a tasty trio of matches, with all games pitting evenly matched teams which have differing rewards up for grabs.

The contest between Yarra Junction and Healesville looks the most important in the overall scheme of the season.

With more than a third of the season now travelled, the match now becomes vitally important in the pecking order for finals positions.

Both teams have failed to live up to expectations so far, and a loss in this game would leave them with some considerable work to keep themselves in the finals picture.

Woori Yallock hosts Mount Evelyn in a top-of-the-table clash between undefeated teams.

Woori Yallock has started its assault on a third premiership in a row in impressive fashion, while Mount Evelyn has done what it had to against lowly opposition.

This contest will give a fairly accurate picture as to where both teams stand.

A Woori Yallock win would further enhance their reputation as the best team having encountered for the big challengers early in the season, while a win to Mount Evelyn would deliver

them some self-belief and confidence that they are a legitimate challenger this season.

In the final game of the round, the young brigades of Yarra Glen and Seville face off in an interesting matchup.

Both teams have proven to have plenty of upside over the opening stages of the season, but their inability to capitalise on key moments in games has left both teams winless to this stage.

A win in this game would not only bring some much-needed confidence and reward for either team, but it would also leave them within touching distance of the top four.

Relay girls blitz the field

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS MORRISON Reserve was a busy track and field venue on Saturday as the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club held their regular Little Athletics program on Saturday morning, before hosting Round 5 of the Athletics Victoria AV Shield competition.

The Little Athletics athletes made the most of the calm Saturday morning conditions to record some outstanding results.

They again improved on the skills, technique and fitness developed through the athletics programs at Yarra Ranges.

Plenty of smiling faces was ample evidence that children and parents alike are enjoying the morning.

The senior club then competed on

their home track against athletes from other clubs in the eastern suburbs, including powerhouse clubs such as Box Hill, Nunawading, Ringwood and many private school old boys clubs.

Home ground advantage was evident with lots of Yarra Ranges singlets visible in many events.

There were many highlights on the day, with one impressive performance coming from the Open Women’s 4x400 relay team blitzing the field to win. What made it impressive was all members were Under 17. Well done Olivia, Lily P, Lily T and Georgia.

Thanks to Dom, Laura, Kate, Darren, Andrew, Michael, Rob, Jamie and all the other helpers for the hard work to make the day well run and enjoyable to compete in.

Young Tom plays like a veteran WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD: The daily winner was Steuart Hawke (40 points), with the runner-up Roger Mataele (39). The balls went down to 34. The NTP winners were A.J (3rd), and Steuart Hawke, on both the 12th and the 17th, completing a most satisfactory day for him!

TWILIGHT Tom Jolly, 12, has been playing golf for little more than a year. His performances over the last week have been staggering! Last week, at the start of the Club Championships, Tom won C Grade on the Saturday, and then followed it up with a B Grade win on Sunday, both with impressive net

to go before a winner will be declared.

The winner’s cup is eagerly sought after by each participant; the Challenge has been a great success and a great way for the different businesses in town to meet each other.

The Open Championship is being led by seven-time champion, Paul Mason. He has a 10-stroke lead over six-time winner, Andrew Williams. In B Grade, Dave Wappit has led after each round. He has a threeshot lead over Ken White, with one round to go. The wily old veteran, Kevin Kane, has a sixshot lead in C Grade, with Tim Blanche doing the chasing. The women’s title is being led by the incomparable Meredith Nursey.

Meredith has a stranglehold on that competition. No surprises that Tom Jolly is leading the Junior Nett Champs, but not the open event. Harrison Baxter has a 13-shot lead in that. All details will be revealed next week.

Yarra Junction holds on to Shield YARRA JUNCTION BOWLS YARRA Junction Bowling Club’s midweek Pennant team had a bye, but the club still played two matches in the week.

There was a friendly match on Friday against the Outer Eastern Rangers, a bowling group comprising mainly younger bowlers with intellectual disability.

The annual match is hosted by Yarra Junction and club members were very impressed by the way the Rangers have improved their bowling over the past year.

Players are up for it all THE Healesville Bowling Club has been jumping the past three Wednesday nights with the Corporate Challenge event.

Between 24 local businesses, with three players in each team, have been battling to outdo one another and beat each other into submission.

the rink, or even being blown out of bounds.

Yarra Junction held the overall lead until the last few ends, when Ringwood just managed to get in front, winning 78 to 72 overall.

On 15 November, Yarra Junction plays Upwey-Tecoma at Upwey from 10am; and on Saturday, 19 November, Yarra Junction plays Mooroolbark from 1pm at home.

THE hearts of Healesville motor enthusiasts skipped a beat on Thursday, 10 November, when 42 muscle cars from the 1963 to 1978 Bathurst era took a cafe pit-stop in the town.

The Leukaemia Foundation 2016 Aussie Muscle Car Run had smashed their $300,000 as they made their way back to South Australia after a full day of excitement on the famous Phillip Island track.

Actor and motor enthusiast, Shane Jacobson, said the run was a perfect match teaming wonderful people with wonderful cars with a fantastic cause.

“Knowing that every day 35 people around Australia are told they have blood cancer of some sort, and that the Leukaemia Foundation do such a fantastic job of assisting them, it’s just an amazing thing to support,” he said. Healesville resident,

Lee Martin, was impressed with both the cars and the cause.

“These cars are really special,” he said, looking over the a classic 1974 HQ Monaro.

“I know people who have passed on from cancer, so this is a good cause,” he added.
