UPWEY’S Sarah Wilson is this week set to meet the man she believes is her long-lost half-brother.

Using the power of Facebook, Miss Wilson believes she has found her halfbrother, whom she has never met, and hopes the meeting will deliver confirmation of a new sibling.

When Miss Wilson was aged eight, she found out she had a half-brother from her father’s past relationship. “My Mum told me and I confronted Dad when I was very young - he told me about him and had a photo of him,� she said. “After that ... (when) I asked my Dad for more information, he said he ‘didn’t know anything’. “None of my family knows (her brother) exists.�

Miss Wilson is getting married in November next year and would like her brother to help her celebrate the special day.

Her upcoming wedding became the motivation for her to use social media to attempt to find and contact him, because she no longer speaks to her father.

Social media worked in her favour.

Miss Wilson posted on various Facebook noticeboards, which are used to buy, swap and sell items, and it resulted in a whirlwind of responses.

She was given various details by people who knew him, including his age, mother’s name and location.

This, she believes, has led her to find the right person. “People who saw my post contacted me and said they went to school with his mum and knew where she lives and bit by bit I got a piece of the puzzle,�

Miss Wilson said. “Then someone messaged me saying they know who my brother was as they knew his name and his mum’s name and said that he grew up without his dad.

By Peter Douglas THE Burnham Beeches Preservation Group is encouraging residents to learn more about the historic site’s redevelopment at a public meeting on Thursday, 10 November.

Due to be held at 7.30pm at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve, the meeting aims to educate citizens concerned over the revised planning permit, which celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and development partner Adam Garrison have put forward.

Presently, Yarra Ranges Shire ratepayers have the chance to provide feedback on planning scheme amendment C143, and a concurrent planning permit, which will enable the development of a hotel and resort at the site.

The Burnham Beeches Preservation Group was set up after the initial plan called for the construction of dozens of villas on-site.

Though a revised permit has now been submitted, group member Rick Wall said there still were concerns over increased usage.

“While the amended plan has dropped the villas, there are still concerns about traffic flows with the new facility expected to attract hundreds of vehicles,” he said.

“The timing of the mansion works and other issues, such as the impact of a private development on the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, (are a concern).”

which, if the plans go ahead, will also boast a brewery, restaurant, provedore and an area for music concerts and markets.

“The ‘jewel in the crown’ is the complete refurbishment of the historic Burnham Beeches mansion which will become a six-star hotel.”

Residents with planning queries are urged to submit them via the Burnham Beeches Preservation Group website at www.burnhambeechespreservationgroup.wordpress.com.

The questions will then be forwarded to Yarra Ranges Shire, with the answers to be discussed in detail at the community meeting.

Meanwhile, submissions for the amendment to Yarra Ranges Shire close at 5pm on Tuesday, 22 November.

In solemn remembrance

By Peter Douglas DANDENONG Ranges’ RSL sub-branches and communities are preparing to remember Australia’s Diggers who died while serving their country.

On Friday, 11 November, services will be held throughout the region, including at the Emerald Cenotaph in Main Street at 10.45am.

Afterwards, those present will be encouraged to participate in the Anzac Walk, which celebrates 32 young men from the township who lost their lives in World War I. To complement this year’s

services, 12 students from Emerald Secondary College will present a talk that showcases their experiences while tackling the Kokoda Track.

The students will address the community and RSL members at the Emerald RSL at 6pm on Thursday, 10 November.

The students completed the track in September last year, thanks to their own fund-raising activities and assistance from the Emerald RSL. Vice-principal at Emerald Secondary College, Mike Jaremczuk, said the Emer-

ald RSL and president Peter Maloney were instrumental in helping the students to achieve their goal.

Meanwhile, Dandenong Ranges RSL will be conducting a service at 10.40am at the Village Green (corner of Mountain Highway and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Sassafras).

Sassafras Primary School students will be in attendance, with a guest speaker from HMAS Cerberus.

Later that evening, the sub-branch will host an event to celebrate the renovations of its premises.

Police are yet to arrest anyone over the aggravated burglary and theft at Mr Wood’s home.

He’s convinced his home was locked the night it was invaded, but has since spent approximately $10,000 upgrading his home security including changing the locks, installing alarms and surveillance cameras.

“Our home security has gone up tenfold. It’s like Fort Knox,” he said.

Mr Wood’s electoral building on Langmore Lane, Berwick was broken into weeks before his home was burgled.

Offenders did not manage to get into his office.

He said his personal experience had further highlighted the need for harsher penalties.

In August, the State Government introduced new pro-remand home invasion and carjacking legislation.

Those convicted of either crime would face longer jail terms, and would need to justify why they should not be remanded.

Mr Wood is chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration and is expected to soon make a major announcement on migrant offenders.

By Aneeka Simonis A FEDERAL politician tough on youth gang crime says he’s had to turn his house into “Fort Knox” after his family was targeted in a brazen aggravated burglary.

La Trobe MP and former national security police officer Jason Wood was home asleep with his wife and two and a half year old daughter when offenders raided his home, stealing the house keys and his wife’s Audi.

His electoral building in Berwick was also targeted.

Mr Wood believes whoever broke into his family home had been outside watching and waiting for the right time, as he and his wife Judy Cheung were up all night trying to soothe their sick daughter, Jasmine.

“We believe they were watching in the house,” he said.

Mr Wood, who was a senior sergeant in the Counter Terrorism Co-ordination Unit from 2003-’04, said his crime enforcement career had trained him to react in threatening situations, and whoever was in his house was lucky not to have awoken the former policeman.

“If I bumped into them in the middle of the night, it would have been on for young and old. There was no way that person would be leaving the house,” he said.

“I’ve been trained to react.”

He did not wish to disclose the date of the aggravated burglary, or the location of his home for fear of reprisals.

“The scary thing is, I’m away from home in parliament a lot so it’s just my wife and Jasmin in the house,” Mr Wood said.

His destroyed car was found five days later in the eastern suburbs of

Melbourne, and was thought to have been involved in a number of other burglaries and break-ins.

His house keys were not located.

Mr Wood has taken a strong, public stance on cracking down on youth gang-related crimes in Victoria as rates of home invasion and carjackings increase.

He called for the National Anti-Gang Squad to be deployed to Victoria to home in on youth offenders, as well as advocating for a national gang database to be developed to help track movement and growth of violent street gangs, including the notorious Apex gang.

MEMBERS of Monbulk Emergency Group are inviting Monbulk residents to attend a discussion on the Monbulk Bushfire Management Plan on Tuesday 15 November.

The plan aims to provide guidance for land owners on how to manage vegetation for the protection of the Monbulk Township, and includes protection for high value ecological sites.

Monbulk Emergency Group is a sub-committee of Monbulk and District Community Opportunities Working Group (MADCOW), and has been working on developing the plan to protect lives and community assets.

Chair of the Monbulk Project, Barry Megee, said the discussion would explain to residents how the plan was established and if it had worked.

“There will also be small discussion from Monbulk CFA, Yarra Ranges Shire Council and DELWP (Department of Environment, Land,

Water and Planning),” Mr Megee said.

“We need to show where the biggest problem is.

“It’s one of those things, that if we can little by little get bits and pieces done, we can eventually reduce the risks of bushfires in Monbulk.”

The community-focused plan is aiming to maximise bushfire safety in towns and settlements at high risk during the bushfire season.

The approach provides a methodology for planning the management of bushfire fuels including vegetation.

Alongside Monbulk Emergency Group, CFA, Yarra Ranges Council, Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria have assisted in the development of the plan.

The event will be held at Monbulk Living and Learning Centre on 21 Main Road, Monbulk from 7.30pm-9pm.

Prepare for heat IT’S a timely reminder that the hot weather and the fire season are just around the corner; and not to be fooled by the recent unseasonal rain and mild conditions.

Like humans, pets can suffer from a range of problems after exposure to the sun or high temperatures.

Dehydration can result from prolonged exposure to the sun, especially if access to water is limited.

In extreme heat, animals can also suffer from heat stress; while for fairer pets, sunburn can also be a painful aftermath of too much sun.

Older pets fare better, for the change in temperature as the colder months can be tough on those with arthritis or aching joints.

However, as the barometer climbs, we must plan for the hotter months ahead.

Pets are very prone to heat stress.

They rely instead on panting to help them cool down, but this isn’t a particularly effective method.

The most common cause of heat stress in dogs is being shut in cars.

Even when the windows are open slightly, on a mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly.

On hot days, temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes, and many dogs have died from being shut in hot cars even for short periods of time.

Other contributing factors of heat stress on hot days occur, where an animal has limited or no access to shade and water.

Excessive exercise on hot days can also contribute to heat stress.

Early signs of heat stress include anxiety, panting, and excessive salivation.

As the problem worsens, the animal may become disorientated, and vomiting can occur.

Severe heat stress can cause seizures, collapse, and death.

Finally, remember to include your pets as part of your bushfire plan.

Job-seekers are put to work

The youth garden was an initiative offered by Employment Services Group, where job-seekers undertake community work to be eligible for the government’s dole payments.

Leisure Program and Volunteer Program Coordinator at Mountain District Learning Centre, Rachel Bast said a group of 25 job-seekers worked on the project to re-create a safe place where students could relax, chat or study.

The program has now finished, but a new program will start on Monday 7 November.

Cars keep dropping in

By Peter Douglas BELGRAVE resident Lola Diaz is fearful a car may ‘missile’ into her kitchen after three near misses in recent times.

In a third incident, and the second in just over a year, a car has slipped over an embankment along the Belgrave-Hallam Road in wet conditions and tumbled with great force down Ms Diaz’s front garden.

Thankfully, tree stumps stopped the momentum and no-one was seriously injured.

However, the frequency of these incidents has left Ms Diaz extremely fearful and anxious, which has previously prompted her to call on VicRoads to install barriers along that particular stretch of road.

But no action has been taken.

“I would normally be gardening out the front on that day, but I’m glad that I didn’t,” she said.

“If that stump hadn’t have stopped the car, it would’ve come through like a missile into our house.

“When I saw the car, it was absolutely terrifying - I didn’t know whether the driver was in the car or even alive.”

The road in question is a section of Belgrave-Hallam Road, just up from Kaola Street heading towards Belgrave South.

The road runs above her property, which is situated in a gully with a steep incline that leads into her house.

The incline is effectively her front garden and she enjoys maintaining the area.

Although there have been barriers installed along a nearby sharp bend, there is nothing along the stretch that runs above several properties.

Ms Diaz said she was not alone in expressing fears over the dangerous roads

She feels she has a duty of care to both her neighbours and drivers on the road, because she believes one day they won’t be so lucky.

“VicRoads has told me there have not been any deaths on that road and they won’t be installing barriers,” she said.

“But, I’m wondering what it will take for them to take notice.

“It’s a dangerous road, particularly in the wet.

“We need to consider the benefits for the drivers, if there were barriers.

“They wouldn’t plunge with huge force over an embankment, then encounter barriers such as trees before landing.”

The 'Mail’ has sought comment from VicRoads and will endeavour to publish a response.

MELBOURNE’S fitness fanatics are set for a shock as the ever-popular 1000 Steps gets set to close in the next few weeks.

The Ferntree Gully Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is to close for upgrading and maintenance works for three weeks from Monday 14 November, though some access will be available.

Walkers will still be able to access the summit of One Tree Hill from the Ferntree Gully picnic ground via Lyrebird Track and return to the picnic ground via Link Track, Belview Terrace and School Track.

Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranges Matt Hoogland said the works will improve the condition of the walk. “(This will) ensure the 1000 Steps ... continues to be safe and accessible for the half a million plus visitors who tackle the track each year,” he said.

“The temporary closure of the 1000 Steps track provides a great opportunity for walkers to try something new and explore the many other walking tracks in the Dandenong Ranges National Park and other parks they may not be aware of.”

Mr Hoogland said some of the great parks include the National Rhododendron Gardens, Silvan Reservoir, George Tindale Gardens, RJ Hamer Arboretum and the Pirianda Gardens.

“These parks not only offer a change of scenery but they are also quite spectacular at this time of year, as the gardens transition into their spring colours,” he said.

The works are expected to be completed by Friday 2 December, pending favourable conditions.

By Kath Gannaway FANS of The Sunny Cowgirls can expect some classic ‘Cowgirls’, and more, when the popular duo make their way back to the York on Lilydale on 3 December.

Sisters, Sophie and Celeste Clabburn, are mainstays of the Australian country music scene having released their eighth studio album “Here We Go”, in September.

The album kicked off another Australian tour and Sophie told the Mail they couldn’t wait to get back to the Yarra Valley.

“Every time we’ve played The York it’s been a crazy night,” Sophie said.

“We’ve played there three or four times and we just love it.

“We’re looking forward to it.”

Sophie said growing up on the farm in Dunkeld in Western Victoria was where it all began, influenced by their guitar-playing dad who wrote his own songs about working on the farm and the different characters he met.

The girls, eight-time Golden Guitar nominees, followed suit immortalising their experiences working as roustabouts and farmhands, in their debut album ‘Little Bit Rusty’.

While the new album takes them back to their roots in terms of music, Sophie says it also reflects their ‘growing up’.

“Our songs are drawn from real life experience ... just from growing up and different life experiences,” she said.

“Celeste did a stint in the Territory and has done a few songs out of that, and I’m recently married, so there are a couple of songs out of that.

“Life is always changing, always growing, so there are always new songs on the horizon.”

Country music new-comer, Jemma Beech will open the show who, like the Cowgirls, sings about country people, the land and the lifestyle.

Be warned, the girls are travelling with a full band and Sophie says they will be expecting their audience to do more than just a bit of foot-tapping.

“We’ll be expecting everyone to get up, have a dance, enjoy the music and just have a fun night out,” she said.

THE Marvel Cinematic Universe goes full fantasy in Doctor Strange.

Talented neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the use of his hands in a car accident, and begins studying magic at a Nepalese academy. Meanwhile, a corrupted master threatens to bring an ancient evil to Earth.

Doctor Strange is the best Marvel film since the first Avengers movie.

Though the second act feels somewhat rushed, Doctor Strange does an outstanding job of balancing Strange’s personal journey, in which he sets aside his ego to embrace a greater cause, with the looming mystical threat.

As such, the film is consistently compelling, but also has witty humour, excellent character development all around and a refreshing note of moral ambiguity.

The MCU has long been derided for its weak villains – with the exception of Loki – and veteran Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is now a new exception as Caecilius.

This wayward student of the mystical arts is sinister and gleefully cruel yet soft-spoken, dignified and charismatic.

The action is dazzlingly vibrant and energetic, warping both space and time in beautiful ways, and the climax contains a brilliant act of temporal trickery that must be seen to be believed.

Taking a tried-andtrue formula and infusing it with endless visual imagination and fantastic character writing, Doctor Strange is another triumph for the MCU. – Seth Lukas Hynes

One of his staff said she had once spent half a day cleaning up comments on the MP’s Facebook page and that it was not unusual for her to sit up at night and monitor posts.

Mr Battin said the negative comments have little real effect on decision-making, suggesting detailed communications and advocacy are much better options.

IN RECOGNITION of the hard work the Emerald SES does for the community, the Emerald Lions Club presented a $20,000 cheque to go toward a new truck.

The cheque was given to Emerald SES at the Grow It Bake It Make It community market in Emerald on Sunday 6 November.

Emerald Lions Club Membership chairman Ray Spencer said the SES was chosen to be

the recipient of the cheque in recognition of their hard and constant work throughout the Dandenong Ranges.

“They’re really instrumental to our community with the work they do,” Mr Spencer said.

“Fallen trees, road rescues, and trauma - they really see it all.

“They’re also a really lovely bunch of people.”

The $20,000 came from a trust the Emerald Lions Club had, which mainly goes toward youth rescue.

“It’s really a pleasure to be working with people like those in the SES.” Mr Spencer said the Grow It Bake It Make It market had a great turnout, and Emerald SES sold a record number of sausages at their sausage sizzle.

“They were flat out,” he said.

The market is run by the Emerald Lions Club, and is held on the first Sunday of every month, except January.

GEMBROOK MP Brad Battin has said that online abuse in a political environment is becoming a major problem in the community, with its effects increasingly impacting on his office over the past two years.

Mr Battin’s comments come after a series of incidents during which posters targeted politicians and businesses to further their own agenda.

Last month South Belgrave Home and Hardware and an Upwey hair salon were targeted through a Facebook page that encouraged supporters to boycott their business because they supported CFA volunteers over the ongoing enterprise bargaining dispute.

Yarra Ranges Council election candidate Chelsea McNab was also targeted in two vicious comments on an anti-Greens page saying she should be kicked, sent to the Middle East and decapitated.

Ms McNab’s O’Shannassy Ward rival at the time, Jim Child, described the attack as “absolutely outrageous”, and also said that he had been the victim of comments.

Mr Battin said while mostly he ignored the comments, some could be upsetting.

Tigers salute in full

By Steve Brown FTGDCA THE Belgrave and Upwey-Tecoma cricket clubs paid tribute to the significance of Armistice Day when they clashed in Round 4 of the Reeves Shield at the weekend.

The brainchild of both clubs, in conjunction with the Upwey/Belgrave RSL, a traditional ceremony was held and commemorative stumps were used and will be presented to the RSL upon completion of the game.

A nice touch was the red poppy worn by both teams on specially made uniforms.

Belgrave President, Johnathon Levell, said it was a fantastic initiative.

“Both clubs decided that we would honour Remembrance Day and requested an annual fixture between the clubs during that particular weekend,” he said.

“The clubs assembled last Thursday at the RSL where we announced the teams and we have invited RSL members to an afternoon tea during the game next week, with a special dinner at Upwey following the match.

“This is more than just a game of cricket.”

The Upwey Tigers batted first and lost a wicket second ball of the day before in-form batsman Chris Jewell (87) and Quentin Wells combined for a 139-run partnership.

Wells was extremely brutal on anything pitched short and on one occasion blasted a ball onto the roof of the Upwey Bowling Club.

The former Lysterfield batsman

was dismissed in the first over after the tea break for 53.

Darren Spence also contributed 64 as the Tigers pushed on to 9/299 at stumps in what should be a winning score.

Off-spinner Ben Carnell had the ball coming out nicely to take 3/40 for the Magpies.

Healesville to host first greyhound day THE wider Victorian community of greyhound owners and their pets are invited to Healesville on Saturday, 12 November, for the first ever Greyhound Family Fun Day. The day will celebrate all things greyhound with dog-friendly activities including dog washing, vet checks and educational talks as well as a walk around the stunning Healesville Greyhound Racing Track property.

Families are also catered for with a free barbecue, ice-creams, giveaways and an endless amount of activities for the kids.

The Greyhound Family Fun Day isn’t just for Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) pets, as all breeds are welcome.

In 2015-’16, a record 895 greyhound adoptions were made through Greyhound Racing Victoria’s GAP. With more and more people choosing to take on greyhounds as pets, a burgeoning community has evolved.

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics' attention was split this weekend with many of the athletes competing at the Victoria All Schools Championships held at a cold, wind-swept, Lakeside Stadium.

After day two of the three-day championship club members had won 11 medals including two gold to Lateisha Willis and Georgia Laven.

The windy conditions meant sprinters and jumpers recorded personal bests, however, the middle distance events were very tactical races with fast times hard to come by.

By Dennis Fuller EMERALD GOLF ALL members who have won a Monthly Medal at Emerald Golf Club turned up to vie for the title of ‘Medallist of Medallists’.

A fine array of golfers fronted with expectations, and abilities not always in accord.

When all the cards came in, there was a good amount of scratching and rumination with countbacks and forward somersaults all taken into account.

These activities decided that it was Mark Starick (13) who was the winner and walked away with that coveted title.

This also means that he will represent the club when he takes on all other winners of the same gong in early December.

The November VGL medal was also there for the taking.

There were four players who all managed a nett score of 67.

The cool, windy conditions did not deter the sea of smiling faces from running, jumping and throwing. The club looks forward to seeing everyone - athletes and parents - all back again next Saturday.

It will be a big day for the club next weekend as it hosts a round of AV Shield immediately after the conclusion of the Saturday morning athletics.

The club will be grateful for any members and parents who can help with set up

and pack up during the day, anytime from 8am for littlies set-up to 6pm for pack up and all times in between.

Thankfully, everyone will get to relax afterwards as Sophie and the events team hold the trivia and karaoke night from 7.30pm.

If you have not booked a table yet, get your friends and neighbours together for a fun social night out and support the club's major fundraising event of the year. There will also be plenty of seats at tables if you are flying solo.

Wednesday’s Onerously Foppish Golf (OFG) was a stroke event which suited Moss Fuller down to earth as he won in a canter with a nett score of 67 with his nearest rival Seppy Krummenacher three strokes back on 70.
