Youths make it an event

Craig Rennie has helped to plan a FReeZA event at the Dandenong Show.

“The event promises to be vibrant and dynamic and provides a platform for young people to showcase their talent both on and off stage.”

Craig said young people who wanted to get involved could pick up a flyer at the show or visit YStop at 39 Clow Street, Dandenong.

The 145th annual Dandenong Show is packed with free activities for families.

The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society event opens at 9am on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November.

Gates close to entries at 9pm on the Saturday but the carnival kicks on until 10.30pm. Gates close at 4pm on the Sunday.

Talented young locals will shine at the Dandenong Show in a music extravaganza planned and hosted by young people.

The Greater Dandenong FReeZA committee has enlisted dancers, DJs, and singers in various genres to perform from 4.30pm on Saturday 12 November.

Committee member Craig Rennie said the group gave 12 to 25-year-olds the opportunity to learn sound, lighting, stage management and more, and achieve qualifications in areas such as food handling.

The Doveton 21-year-old has been involved for four years.

“It’s more trying to show the younger people that you can actually make your own events,” he said.

“We’re always promoting for more people to join.

“It’s really good that you’re doing something for the community.

“Because I’m in my final years I’m able to teach the younger people that come in what I learnt when I first joined.”

The group meets once a fortnight generally and weekly leading up to an event.

Council community services director Mark Doubleday said this was the first time young people had actively been engaged to co-ordinate a youth event at the Dandenong Show.

“Involvement in the event will provide young people with the opportunity to hone their event and stage management skills, as well as a chance to gain first-hand experience with the technical skills required to bring an event of this nature to fruition,” he said.

“The youth stage will promote new and emerging musical talent from across Greater Dandenong, including dancers, rap artists and musicians.

These two are no show ponies Kim Bilton and Jane Mitchell with horse Rosie.

Kim’s been involved with horses since she was a kid and got her first horse at age 14.

“My parents bought a children’s holiday farm which enabled me to have a horse,” she said.

“A few years later I started breeding horses and I’ve been doing that ever since.”

She now has seven Australian ponies and riding ponies on her Upper Beaconsfield property.

Her horse Autograph gave birth just hours before the Journal met her and Jane there.

“I can’t remember how I really started with them,” she said.

“Years ago they were very popular.

“Once you start you just keep going.

“It gets in our blood, I think.”

Jane said she mostly had thoroughbreds on her Narre Warren North property. She came from “a very non-horsey family”.

“I begged, borrowed and stole rides as a kid, and made friends with people with horses and rode their hoses when I was allowed,” she said.

“I didn’t get my first horse until I was 20.

“Horses are my thing, they’re my life.”

She shows them and both her daughters have

done some show jumping.

“For the kids we always said it was a really good, outdoor, healthy obsession,” she said.

“Our kids were pretty good. They did their own horses, they did their stables. They grew up outside.”

Kim said her daughter rode as well.

“Our daughters are good friends so they went to pony club together,” she said.

“We were like a big family when we’d go to the shows.”

Kim Bilton and Jane Mitchell have notched up 10 years on the Dandenong Show horse committee.

“We were showing. We were sitting waiting for our children to finish and we were watching these elderly gentlemen trying to pack up, pulling out star pickets,” Kim said.

Jane continued: “We were lying on the grass, it was a beautiful day, and I said to Kim ‘look at those poor old blokes’.

“Jack Rae tapped us on the shoulder,” she said.

The now near 70-year show veteran asked them to come to a committee meeting.

“What they really meant was ‘would you join the committee?’,” Kim laughed.

“That was 10 years ago.

“We do the program, we organise judges and stewards, we have to organise all the ribbons, setting up all the rings – that’s a big job – and we need more people on board.

“We really need more people on the committee.

“They are all elderly. There’s no young ones coming through.”

Jane said: “It’s us that pulls the star pickets out now.”

Kim said that loyalty to the show was behind their commitment.

“If we don’t do it, how else is going to do it?” she said.

Jane said that in a normal workplace, someone always stepped into the empty shoes.

“No one steps up to do these things,” she said.

“Like sporting clubs, people are keen to participate but don’t want to help.

“Everyone wants to exhibit and there’s less and less shows.

“We both decided it was time to put back.

“So many communities now have lost their agricultural shows through various reasons.

“It’s part of the heritage of the area.”

The horse section receives about 1500 to 2000 entries over the two days, most from the South Gippsland area but some from as far afield as the other side of Melbourne.

Artist Anne Ross was excited to see her colourful, playful sculpture “where it belongs, where it’s been made for” in Dandenong Market’s Market Square.

The unveiling of the abstract, life-sized bronze figure on Friday 4 November closed three months of celebrations for Dandenong Market’s 150th birthday.

“Market Square receives over 100,000 visitors every week and was the perfect site for a bold and iconic artwork to celebrate our 150th birthday,” market chairwoman Julie Busch said.

Ms Ross’s concept was among three shortlisted for the statue, commissioned by the market with support from Creative Victoria and the City of Greater Dandenong.

“The panel connected with the idea of having a work that honours our history as a market, without being too literal,” Ms Busch said.

“Anne’s concept stood out for its playfulness.

“We’re anticipating that it will engage a very broad demographic of market visitors, regardless of age, race and religion.”

Ms Ross said she grew up knowing the Queen Victoria Market very well.

“Dandenong Market has a very similar feeling,” she said.

“With my public sculptures, I work in a representational way.

“I always want my work not to be read ... there’s not a definitive narrative with them so they can be read on different levels.”

She said it was important to her to select an asexual figure for the piece so that men, women and children could all relate to it.

Ms Ross said the figure’s mask and animal feet were about bringing childhood imagination back into everyday living.

“The animal mask was a reference to it being a market, and also deeper than that is how we all

mask ourselves, but more playful than that,” she said.

Larger than life, shiny, brightly-coloured apples accompany the figure at ground level, ready for visitors to touch and explore.

Ms Ross also introduced the glossy, colourful automotive paint to the figure itself.

“I wanted it to be colourful and fun,” she said.

“I want children to be engaged with the sculpture.”

She said viewers would take “whatever they want” from viewing the statue and it was designed to start discussion.

“There are bits of discovery,” she said.

The market kicked off its 150th birthday festivities on 13 September by launching the Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book and opening Rosling Lane, a 20-metre historical mural.

The book and the wall – named after early market auctioneer Thomas Rosling - document significant moments in the market’s history using photographs and records.

Author Michael Schmith had just six weeks to prepare the 128-page hardcover book to capture the market’s evolution through original photographs and historical records.

“The best thing was to come to the market and talk to the people who matter the most, and the people who matter the most in the market are the traders and the customers,” he said.

“You see how it works and you see this whole spirit of community which, like its produce, is fresh daily.

“It depends on people. It’s not a supermarket.

It’s not a shopping mall.

“It’s got give and take and a community spirit that’s unquenchable.”

The book is available from the Dandenong Market management office for $30.

Ms Ross will host an artist talk in Market Square at 10am on Tuesday 8 November.

Parking back on agenda

By Casey Neill Re-elected Greater Dandenong councillor Youhorn Chea will ask his colleagues to remove Springvale’s parking meters at their first official meeting.

The Victorian Electoral Commission’s (VEC) returning officer for the municipality Bill Irvine declared the results of the 22 October local government election at Dandenong Civic Centre on Wednesday 2 November.

Cr Chea told the event that after 19 years on the council to date and seven elections, this fouryear term would likely be his last.

He then revealed a ‘no ticket machines’ sign and vowed to introduce at the first council meeting a motion to remove them from Springvale.

“The residents don’t want the ticket machines in Springvale,” he said.

“I always put residents first.”

Cr Chea was among nine councillors returned, including fellow Lightwood Ward representatives Loi Truong and Sean O’Reilly.

Tim Dark unseated Paperbark Ward councillor Peter Brown and Zaynoun Melhem replaced Silverleaf Ward retiree John Kelly.

Red Gum Ward voters re-elected Matthew Kirwan, Jim Memeti and Angela Long, and Silverleaf ’s Maria Sampey and Paperbark’s Roz Blades and Heang Tak are all back for another term.

The 11 successful candidates are now councillors elect and will be officially sworn in at a statutory meeting of council on Thursday 10 November, where they’ll also select a mayor.

Cr Kirwan said the councillors had diverse skills and would complement each other and Cr O’Reilly said the council now had a good mix of old and new, and younger and older.

“It was a gruelling campaign with the additional week of pre-poll,” he said, as did many other councillors elect.

They also consistently raised the issue of the cold and windy conditions that plagued them and their volunteers on election day.

“A lot of people got colds out of it,” Cr Long said.

“We even got wind-burnt it was so bad.”

Cr Sampey lost her voice due to illness after ironically pledging in her campaign brochure to be a strong voice for the ward.

Cr Memeti urged unsuccessful candidates to keep their heads high and hold those who had been elected to account.

Cr Melhem said his parents worked full-time on his campaign and his wife helped him to doorknock every weekend.

He grew up in Dandenong and his dad was a councillor during the ’90s.

“It was one of the best places to grow up,” Cr Melhem said.

“I want it to be as good for my kids.”

Out of the tent, ousted councillor predicts dark future

By Casey Neill “The new council may be in for some interesting times,” ousted councillor Peter Brown has declared.

And the former Paperbark Ward representative seems determined to ensure that’s the case.

He fired off a series of inflammatory emails after the Victorian Electoral Commission announced the final results for Greater Dandenong on Saturday 29 October following the 22 October local government election.

Tim Dark will take the long-serving councillor’s place. He was more than 5 per cent ahead on first preference votes and 1000 votes clear when preferences were distributed.

Mr Brown said Cr Dark’s “youthful looks” concealed a plan for him to discredit the State Government and fellow councillors.

He brought up homophobic and sexist comments Cr Dark made back in 2013 that led to him resigning from the Swinburne University Liberal Club in 2014.

“I have previously apologised for any offence that may have been caused by remarks made as a first-year university student on social media and reiterate that those views do not reflect the views I currently hold,” Cr Dark said.

“Muck-raking is not going to change a democratic outcome and I look forward to smoothing things over with Mr Brown in the future.”

Mr Brown also alleged that Cr Dark set up a fake email account in Cr Roz Blades’ name to forward an email to himself that Mr Brown had sent to fellow Paperbark candidate Brad Woodford.

Confused? So was Cr Dark.

“That’s the first I even know anything remotely about that,” he said.

Cr Dark confirmed he received the email but added: “I had no reason to believe it was fraudulent.”

Cr Blades confirmed that the address was not hers, and Mr Woodford confirmed he did receive Mr Brown’s email and that he spoke to Cr Dark about the “unfortunate comments”.

“As a gay man myself, I felt it vital to clear the air on this matter,” he said.

“I decided to direct my preferences to him on the basis that he otherwise shared some similar objectives to me.

Joint drug bust operation Police raided a Springvale factory in a joint operation targeting drug activity.

North West Metro Region Crime Squad officers backed by the Australian Crime Intelligence Commission’s National Taskforce Eligo seized firearms, drugs and cash on Sunday 30 October.

They intercepted a vehicle on the Hume Highway in Wallan about 5am and arrested two men.

During a subsequent vehicle search, police found a substance believed to be the drug ice, a firearm, silencer and cash.

They then executed warrants about 10am at a factory in Springvale and residential properties in Deer Park, Sunshine and Glen Waverley.

At the Springvale address, police allegedly found 13 firearms and what they believe are pre-cursor chemicals used in manufacturing drugs.

They found four further firearms and a significant quantity of cash at the Deer Park property.

Police charged a 45-year-old Deer Park man and a 32-year-old Glen Waverley man with drug and firearms offences, as well as knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

They faced an out-of-sessions court hearing on Sunday afternoon and were remanded in custody to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Two women aged 22 and 34, both Korean nationals, assisted police with their inquiries.

The arrests and seizures were part of an ongoing joint operation between Victoria Police and Taskforce Eligo.

Crime off the streets Thirty-six arrests and 17 search warrants - it’s all in a month’s work for the Division Response Unit.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin said the search warrants related to drugs and were conducted throughout Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia during October.

He said about 18 of the 36 arrests were wanted fugitives.

Det Sen Sgt Bergin established the 20-member unit at Dandenong police station in late August to tackle drug crime and fugitives across Southern Metro Region Division Three.

He’s pleased with how it’s operated so far.

“We’ve had some information coming in from the public as well,” he said.

‘Trifecta’ drive was bad bet

“Tim Dark has my full support.

“Peter Brown is simply displaying a good show of sour grapes at being defeated.

“He clearly saw our alliance as a threat to his re-election hopes.”

Mr Brown also blamed a state Liberal Party campaign for his loss, claiming he spent $32,000 on his own tilt with no party support.

He’s stirring up trouble in Silverleaf Ward, too, perpetuating the rumour that candidate Rhonda Tannous did not meet the criteria for a candidate,

in that she didn’t pay rates in the municipality.

She denied the allegation.

“She sold and vacated her Dandenong property in June this year,” Mr Brown said.

“As Zeynoun Melham was elected on the preferences of Rhonda Tannous, his position as councillor elect must also be called into question,” he said.

However her preferences had not been distributed when Cr Melhem passed the threshold required for election.

Police allege an Officer driver was going for a trifecta in Keysborough.

They said the 34-year-old driver was detected speeding, drug and drink driving as part of Operation Furlong, about 5.30pm on Monday 31 December.

State Highway Patrol central officers pulled over a car after allegedly clocking it travelling at 111km/h in an 80km/h zone on Greens Road.

They allege the driver returned a reading of .111 on a breath test and tested positive to ice.

Police impounded the man’s vehicle for 30 days and immediately suspended his licence.

He is expected to be charged on summons with a range of traffic offences.

1 November 1966 Another title for Pauline Pauline Verey of Dandenong was chosen the winner of the Miss Victoria title in the Miss Australia Quest on Saturday and she will go on to contest the Miss Australia title with other states’ finalists.

Pauline is no novice in the beauty strakes.

She was Miss Moomba Queen two years ago and she was also a strongly favoured entrant in a Miss Universe quest.

Three other girls from the Dandenong district were in the running - Ingrid Poeschmann of Dandenong, Lyn Steel of Springvale, and Ann Unsworth of Frankston.

The Referendum The latest returns in regard to the compulsory service referendum are “No” 1,110,176, “Yes” 1,042,506. “No” majority 67,610.

Training Camp at Dandenong At the last meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council it was decided to approach the Defence Department with a view to establishment of a military camp in the Police Paddocks at Dandenong - a site eminently suited for the purpose.

In view of the fact that the Warragul camp is now in such a state that the men in training have been despatched to their homes until Thursday, it would be interesting to know how far the negotiations have proceeded in the interest of Dandenong.

20 years ago 4 November 1996 Arts Awakening Plans for a multi-million dollar cultural centre

in Dandenong have raised hopes the heart of the city will be given a new lease of life.

The committee for the City of Greater Dandenong has launched a proposal to build major regional performing arts, entertainment and function facility in the central activities district within the next two years.

“It would be great,” said the city’s economic, social and cultural planning manager, Mr Graeme Douglas, who estimated the cost of the project at “more than $40 million”.

Two architects have submitted designs for the centre.

Bill Williams Architect’s bid includes: · A theatre with 800 seats on three levels; · An intimate theatre to accommodate 300; and · A recital hall to cater for 1500 and a jazz bar, cafe/restaurant and other ancillary activities and community storage facilities.

Genser and Associates propose a centre with: · Retail area;

· An amphitheatre; · Two theatres with 500 and 1500 seats; and · The existing town hall to be used as a change room area. · The committee estimates 50 per cent of the funding would come from income generated from hall hiring.

5 years ago 7 November 2011 It’s all a matter of time at this reunion Friendships made through the now-defunct Keysborough Primary School will be renewed at a community reunion later this month.

A time capsule will be opened and historical items will be on display to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the school.

The celebration has been organised by a group of parents who had children at Keysborough Primary School before it closed in 1993.

A not so sweet taste of success

Afghan-born Ajmal Armani called for more CCTV and powers for police to randomly search vehicles for weapons in the same way they test drivers for drugs and alcohol.

“If I’m not a carpenter why would I have screwdriver or a hammer?” he said.

Armani dropped off a customer on Springfield Road, Box Hill North, about 10.30pm on Thursday 27 October.

He turned into Middleborough Road, received another ride request and pulled into Dixon Grove, Blackburn, to check it.

“As soon as I parked at the side, the silver car moved from the back and drove fast and did a Uturn and parked in front of me,” Mr Armani said.

“Two men got out.

“As soon I saw them I was freezed.

“I thought I was dead in a second.”

He put his car into reverse and drove onto the nature strip.

“The guy tried to break my window with a machete,” he said.

“I drove off from them and they chased me down Middleborough.

“I started beeping.”

The silver Hyundai turned off into Ashley Street and Mr Armani called police.

“At that time I was shocked, I was dead,” he said.

“I don’t know how I escaped.”

Mr Armani has installed a dash cam in his car and a security system in his home, and has returned to Uber driving for only “one or two trips”.

“When I see any silver cars I think they’re going to attack me,” he said.

“I’m very lucky my three kids were not in the car.”

Mr Armani urged drivers to look out for each other on the road.

“We need to help each other,” he said.

“If anyone sees something happening to someone, please stop and help them.

“Call the cops, start beeping.”

Cake and tea for CWA milestone

By Casey Neill Jean Taylor has been a Country Women’s Association member since she was 22 years old.

The 70-year-old joined the Campaspe branch when she lived in Rochester, in country Victoria.

“My mother always belonged,” she said.

“I was asked to join and I was really quite delighted.

“I first looked at joining the choir, but I was really interested in joining the other activities as well.

“That was before my daughter was born.

“When we moved down here 34 years ago I joined up with Noble Park.”

The Springvale South resident and fellow branch members Penny Oorloff and Margaret ‘Peggy’ Cox were recognised for their long service at a lunch at Berwick’s Sage at Parkhill on Monday 31 October.

Ms Taylor said she enjoyed the companionship, friendship and working for the community.

“I really like joining in everything, but I do like the craft work,” she said.

“We do assist the local special schools with blankets and knitting and painting smocks – anything that we can help them with.

“That’s all made by us, we don’t just go out and buy them.”

The group meets twice a month and has just over 30 members, ranging in age from 57 to 90 years.

“I have learnt so much craft work and become confident about doing lots of things,” Ms Taylor said.

“It is a big part of my life.

“There’s something in the diary at least every week.

“I was group president a couple of years ago.

“I attended head office three or four times a year as well, so I extended friendships across the state.”

Ms Oorloff, 68, lives in Springvale and joined because her neighbour refused to share her linen craft skills.

“She said ‘no, come along to the CWA and they’ll teach you!’,” she laughed.

That was in 1968.

“I’m still working on sponge cake.”

Ms Cox, 84, came to Australia as a 10-poundPom from England.

“It took three weeks. I rowed all the way here!” she joked.

“When I first got here by boat I went to Noble Park, looked over my back fence and it was market gardens,” she said.

“Parkmore Shopping Centre wasn’t there.

“I had a dunny in the back yard. It was an unmade road.”

She found friendship in her new home through the CWA. “It’s for company and friends,” she said.

Ms Cox, who now lives at Park Glen Retirement Village in Keysborough, has used the knitting skills she learnt through CWA to make clothing for her children and 10 grandsons.

The group welcomes new members and donations of craft materials.

Emergency service crews have been on a tour of Greater Dandenong temples and mosques to improve their multicultural understanding.

The Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network hosted the event on Monday 24 October.

CFA, MFB, SES and police started the day with an address from Victoria Police officer Maha Sukkar on understanding Islam and Muslims in Australia.

The tour included the Shri Shiva Vishnu Hindu temple in Carrum Downs, the Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre and Mosque in Keysborough, Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Keysborough and the Sri Lankan Dhamma Sarana Buddhist Temple in Keysborough.

CFA community education co-ordinator Steven Corrigan said the day was an opportunity to see the diversity within Greater Dandenong, particularly the religion and faith dimension of multiculturalism.

He said faith leaders welcomed tour participants and explained their beliefs, practices and community in Australia.

Mr Corrigan said the day was very worthwhile and educational.

“The comments that I have received back so far talk about it being very interesting to actually enter these places of worship and not just look at pictures of them or look from the outside,” he said.

“Having the opportunity to speak to the various religious leaders gave us a better understanding of the individual faiths/culture and customs.

“These leaders went the extra mile to make the tour very enjoyable and interesting and also great hospitality.

“The day also gave us as emergency services the opportunity to interact, liaise and discuss what each other are doing in the realm of multiculturalism and where we can work better together going into the future.”

Mr Corrigan said that because of the success of the day, the CFA was looking at running more tours in the future and targeting brigades across the region.

A Noble Park school has won an Australian film prize.

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School’s short film Amazing Mums won it the Junior Live Action category in the Screen It competition.

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) runs the annual competition, Australia’s largest moving image competition for schoolaged filmmakers, animators and game makers.

It announced the winners on Thursday 3 November, judged from a pool of more than 580 entries from across the country.

Winners will receive trophies and prizes at a red carpet awards ceremony at ACMI in Melbourne on Friday 18 November.

Winning entries will be exhibited in the kids’ space in ACMI’s free and permanent exhibition Screen Worlds. They’ll also appear on the ACMI website alongside all finalists, which included The Mystery of the Missing Bunnies from Wooranna Park Primary School in Dandenong North.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells “Lock ’em up and throw away the key” won’t quell the spate of Apex Gang-style young offenders, former state Attorney-General Rob Hulls has told a south-east Melbourne community legal centre’s audience.

Mr Hulls told the Springvale Monash Legal Service AGM on 26 October that education was an “absolute key” to stopping the region’s recidivist car-jackers and home invaders.

“Why don’t we think as a community – instead of sending a kid to a youth detention centre for two or three weeks – that we send them to youth detention until they complete year 11 or year 12?”

With an audience including two Dandenongbased magistrates, Mr Hulls said a holistic approach was much cheaper in the long-run.

Under such a regime, offenders’ underlying problems such as drug and alcohol abuse and skipping school would be treated.

This improved the chances of stemming the cycle of re-offending when they were released.

Just locking up offenders for longer and building more prisons didn’t make the community safer and was a “nonsense”, Mr Hulls said.

He warned that governments were moving down a costly road of spending more on prison beds than hospitals or schools.

Aside from some “bad buggers that just need to be locked up”, prisoners commonly grew up in family violence, had mental health or drug issues, or acquired brain injuries.

Those issues weren’t being treated within prisons which were the 21st century’s “asylums”, Mr Hulls said.

He urged community legal centres to spruik for the long-term savings of a “therapeutic” approach while arming themselves with State Ombudsman Deborah Glass’s 2015 report on the costliness of prisons.

“I’d be grabbing that (report) and using it on a daily basis.”

Mr Hulls served as state Attorney General in the Bracks and Brumby governments from 19992010.

He said it was a fight to maintain legal aid and

Now the director at the RMIT Universitybased Centre for Innovative Justice, Mr Hulls said the centre teamed law and social work students with professionals to help Dame Phyllis Frost Centre prisoners.

The students followed up with prisoners six months later to clear stressful real-world problems such as family law disputes, housing, and finances that could de-rail them into re-offending.

Mr Hulls said the combined social work and legal degree offered by RMIT was “where the future lies” in legal practice.

It gave students a practical feel for what the legal process looks like, he said.

The centre has called for new models of justice – such as restorative conferencing between

victims and perpetrators – for sexual offences and culpable driving.

Mr Hulls stated that just 1 per cent of sexual assault victims reported the crime, were followed up by police, went to trial and secured a conviction against the offender.

“Are we saying an adversarial system is all we have to offer to victims of sexual assault?”

In culpable driving offences, usually it involves a “mate killing a mate” smashing into a tree.

Mr Hulls wondered if jail was the best outcome for the driver who had to live with killing his mate or the victim’s family, who was searching for answers.

He noted the UK’s moves towards cyber courts and said Australian courts “designed by lawyers for lawyers” had to be more user-friendly.

“We should be putting the user at the centre of designing a legal system.”

Catholic school training probe

By Casey Neill A Dandenong school is under investigation over training it provided to mature-aged students.

The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) confirmed to the Journal that it was looking into training that St John’s Regional College has delivered.

VRQA director Lynn Glover said the Department of Education and Training (DET) and Catholic Education Commission Victoria (CECV) were involved in the joint investigation, which started earlier this year.

“However, I can confirm the VRQA investigation into St John’s has not questioned the quality of training delivered to school students which was not intermingled with training provided to mature aged students.

“All school-based qualifications are satisfactory.

“We are investigating training qualifications issued to post-school students.”

Ms Glover encouraged any students with information that could help the investigation to call 9032 1516.

St John’s is a Catholic secondary school plus a registered training organisation, registered with the VRQA. It has held contracts to deliver State Govern-

ment funded training since 2011 but was unsuccessful in its application for a 2016 VET Funding Contract.

The My School website revealed the college’s income from “other private sources“ had increased from $525,347 in 2009 to $5.1 million in 2014.

College principal Andrew Walsh stepped down “suddenly for a range of reasons including family health issues”, according to the school’s 15 September newsletter. Brendan Watson has stepped into the role.

A DET spokeswoman said the department did not currently contract with the college to deliver vocational education and training through the Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG).

“Whilst the VRQA is investigating the college, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” she said.

CECV executive director Stephen Elder said the body referred allegations regarding St John’s to the relevant authorities, confirmed the joint investigation and echoed calls for evidence.

A St John’s spokesperson declined the Journal’s request for comment.

“The college is focusing on the Year 12 exams and end of year classes,” they said.

Art drive shows Budding artists got a taste for showcasing their talent at the Silverton Primary School’s Art Show.

The Noble Park North school turned its gym into an art gallery late last month and displayed paintings, cakes, woodwork and more.

Teacher Di Phillipson said the experience inspired the kids to think of themselves as artists.

“The quality and the way the students are applying themselves has just been amazing,” she said.

The show also featured creative writing, jewellery and photography.

Artist Gavin Byrt spent a day in the school working with students, and artists from Dandenong’s Connection Gallery worked with students over six weeks on a variety of activities.

“We’re building up connections to have not just in the school, but make it more communitybased,” Ms Phillipson said.

Walking the sunny side of the street Walking to school is a sunny, funny way to start the day, Greater Dandenong kids say.

Students from Dandenong West Primary and Noble Park’s St Anthony’s Catholic Primary joined forces to write and illustrate a book about their morning strolls to the classroom.

They launched My Sunny Funny Walk to School at Dandenong Library on Thursday 27 October.

Greater Dandenong Council successfully applied for a $10,000 VicHealth grant to produce the book with help from Kids’ Own Publishing.

Anna Dollard from Kids’ Own Publishing said the students worked on text for the book in their own classrooms, then came together at a threehour workshop to create images.

Ms Dollard hoped this book would “inspire

Dandenong West Grade 5 student Akash, 10, said he made a Pokemon picture with a St Anthony’s buddy.

Classmate Meenu, 9, said the best part about walking to school was she could “sing everything” and chat with her mum and kinder-aged sister.

“You get to exercise instead of being in a car."

Wind at their back for Smith Family

By Casey Neill Dandenong High School students battled 120kmh wind gusts during their 50km bike ride to support The Smith Family.

Student Sahar and 19 peers from her youth development class took part in the Around the Bay – Ride for a Child in Need event on Sunday 9 October to contribute to the service component of their Duke of Edinburgh Award tilt.

“We are aiming to raise at least $3000 for The Smith Family,” she said.

“We are running different activities within school in order to raise money.

“Raising money isn’t easy but thinking about the children in need for education motivates me all the way.

“Every step I take I think about the children.”

Student Lora said crossing the finish line was “the best feeling ever”.

“It was a hard and long day riding due to the windy conditions,” she said.

“When the wind was with us it only took us an hour to get there and when the wind was against us it took us five hours to get back to the city.”

Bicycle Network runs the event, which is Australia’s largest one-day bike ride as a major fundraiser for The Smith Family.

The Smith Family’s Victorian general manager Anton Leschen said the support from Dandenong High School would provide disadvantaged children with tools, resources and extra support to thrive at school through Learning for Life.

“More than one in 10 children are living in disadvantage in Australia today and this limits their choices, opportunities and outcomes in life,” he said.

He said Learning for Life provided disadvantaged students with mentoring programs and other support to help them fit in at school and keep up with their peers.

Greater Dandenong has two finalists in this year’s VicHealth Awards.

The Dandenong-based Alcohol Diversion Program is in the running for the Preventing Harm from Alcohol category, it was revealed on Wednesday 2 November.

The council’s All Nations Cricket for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Migrants event is vying for the Building Health Through Sport award.

Finalists will join international and Victorian dignitaries in government and health promotion at an awards ceremony on Thursday 1 December where the winners will be announced.

The Journal reported on 7 October that the Alcohol Diversion Program earned Divisional Commendations for Spearheads Senior Sergeant Frank Bodor, now Acting Inspector, and Senior Constable Elyse Mason at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony on 4 October.

The program has engaged about 40 people,

accounted for $600,000 in unpaid fines and cut drunk and disorderly offences by about 30 per cent.

“It started two and a half years ago when I was on the road at Dandenong and we experienced the same clients for offences of drunk and drunk and disorderly,” Act Insp Bodor said.

“We had no other alternative or options available to us other than infringement notices.”

The officer contacts the Sheriff ’s department to identify outstanding fines and has those warrants listed at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

“They would be assessed by the treatment providers and have a treatment program modelled to their needs,” Act Insp Bodor said.

A return court date is set, where the treatment provider details the client’s progress.

“The magistrate would determine how long they would be on the program for, and wave fines,” he said. “We’ve seen some remarkable health improvements.”

Health drive embeds early wellbeing Keysborough Community Children’s Centre (KCCC) is only the fourth early childhood service in Victoria to receive a health award.

It’s the first in the region to be officially recognised as a Healthy Early Childhood Service under the State Government and Cancer Council Victoria achievement program.

The centre has embedded healthy eating and oral health, physical activity, sun protection, safe environments, tobacco control and mental health and wellbeing into its service.

KCCC grows fruit, vegetables and herbs to supplement kitchen menus, cares for chickens and enjoys their fresh eggs, adds extra exercise programs to its curriculum, and more.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST Office workers set for taxing times on Eureka climb

By Casey Neill Noble Park’s Martin Kowalczyk and his Australian Tax Office colleagues are gearing up for the climb of their lives.

The 34-year-old will take 1642 stairs and his 11 Uncanny Taxmen teammates in this year’s Eureka Climb on Sunday 13 November.

It’s the first time Mr Kowalczyk has entered the race to the top of Melbourne’s tallest building.

He’ll have to conquer 88 levels and 300 metres of elevation to reach the finish line at the highest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere.

“We’ve all been in training to complete the event to raise funds for Interplast and Whitelion charities, so that they may continue their great work rebuilding young lives,” Mr Kowalczyk said.

“Interplast works to improve lives of people in developing countries who are disabled as a result of congenital medical conditions.”

The non-profit particularly focuses on cleft lips and palates, burns and scars.

“Whitelion works with disadvantaged members of our community who come from abusive families, and are affected by sexual, drug and/or alcohol abuse,” Mr Kowalczyk said.

Mr Kowalczyk is running a raffle in his office and seeking sponsorship, with $400 his goal.

There will be a timed stairwell for climbers who want to race against the clock and an untimed stairwell for those who’d prefer a more leisurely pace.

Last year’s event raised more than $260,000 and this year’s target is even higher.

Unsafe lighters burn importer In one of their biggest ever hauls, product safety inspectors seized 34,000 unsafe cigarette lighters from a Dandenong importer.

The Consumer Affairs Victoria team said the lighters did not meet mandatory Australian product safety standards.

The 33,767 disposable lighters without safety warnings and 628 banned novelty lighters that young children could mistake for toys had a total retail value of $100,000.

Consumer Affairs Victoria director Simon Cohen said the seizure also included 68 pairs of sunglasses that did not have the required safety labelling.

Inspectors traced the products to the Dandenong-based importer last month after they were found on sale at a store in Epping.

Mr Cohen said potentially dangerous goods were subject to mandatory product safety standards in Australia.

Disposable lighters must be permanently marked with the name of the manufacturer or distributor and ‘Keep away from children’ or ‘Keep out of reach of children’.

Toy-like novelty lighters are subject to an outright permanent ban.

Sunglasses must be clearly marked or labelled with the name of the manufacturer or supplier, the lens category number and a description of the category.

Those who supply goods that do not meet mandatory standards or are subject to a permanent ban, including importers, can face fines of up to $1.1 million for body corporates and $220,000 for individuals.

“Lighters can be extremely dangerous, especially in the hands of young children,” Mr Cohen said.

“Consumer Affairs Victoria takes a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to product safety breaches in order to keep Victorians safe from harm.”

Jack says show is in the blood

By Cam Lucadou-Wells ‘Stalwart’ doesn’t do justice to Jack Rae - who has helped organise Dandenong Show for the past 70 years.

Mr Rae, 88, joined the agricultural show society’s committee as an 18-year-old following in the footsteps of his father, George.

“There’s quite a bit of show blood in us,” Mr Rae said.

“I’ve moved around the show world a bit ... it does seem to get in the system.”

The Narre Warren North cattle farmer is a former show president and remains the show’s chief steward. He’s on the committee that spends the best part of a year organising each annual show.

Remarkably Mr Rae’s involvement still spans less than half of the show’s 145-year history.

Mr Rae said the show format has not changed much but there remains no better entertainment for families.

“Why do we still run a show now? It’s an opportunity for people to come now and mingle, but there’s also a value in learning how to look after animals.

“Without the shows, people wouldn’t have the same access to things like the animal nursery or the children exhibiting their schoolwork or the equestrian riding.

“I see it as a community benefit, I might say.

That’s the pleasure of being involved.”

Mr Rae can remember times when farmers used to herd their cattle and ride their horses from their pastures to the showgrounds.

As kids, he and his brother Bert and sister Thelma drove their cows to Berwick Showgrounds.

He recalls that 70 years ago, the Dandenong showgrounds were set in the middle of town, at the current Dandenong Market site.

The site was home to the stock market and a football ground ringed by a cycle-racing track.

During World War II, the show moved to the Berwick showgrounds while the Australian Army camped at the Dandenong site.

After “a fair bit of reluctance”, the show made a permanent move to its more spacious 60-acre

Mr Rae said the Greaves family - noted pastoralists in Lang Lang and Dandenong - had donated 22 of those acres to the show society in the 1900s.

That land was augmented by a donated parcel from the City of Dandenong to form an offer too good to refuse.

The original showgrounds were exchanged to become part of the council’s former Clow Street offices.

Mr Rae marvels at the foresight of councillors and the Greaves.

The future of the show looks assured to Mr Rae, though Dandenong has long since been over-run by suburbia.

committee has a healthy injection of young blood.

“At every town and city that has an agricultural show, it is recognised as something of value to the community.

“There are not many agricultural shows that have had to close. And the shows, in the main, have been going 100-plus years.

“It’s about sharing your knowledge - that’s why shows were started.”

SPORT Draft grilling put Battle straight

By Nick Creely Sometimes the tough conversations in life are the ones that truly make a difference.

That’s certainly the case for draft prospect Josh Battle who in November 2015 walked into an AFL club for a routine draft interview.

The 18-year-old key-forward, who had been a success in the TAC Cup program for the Dandenong Stingrays, was blindsided by a series of stinging hard truths about his game.

“It was actually my first ever interview with an AFL club so I didn’t know what to expect.

“They asked me “how do you think you’d go at the top level?” and we got into a pretty in-depth conversation and they blatantly just told me that my endurance wasn’t good enough and that I’m only a one position player and almost undraftable,” he said.

“Thinking back to that moment, it did hurt but at the end of the day I couldn’t be more grateful to that person for saying that to me.

“It was such a driving force for me throughout pre-season and it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get fitter and work a lot harder.

“That same club has spoken to me this year so I’d be grateful if given the chance with them.

“I’ve really worked hard on a lot of things; being that third tall forward you have to add a few more strings to your bow and I wasn’t great with my endurance.

“I did a lot of extra work and extra sessions and now I strongly believe that is one of my strengths now.

“I pride myself on running my opponents ragged and I just try to isolate myself in dangerous positions.”

Hu hits his stride after overcoming pits of failure

By Nicholas Creely When hopes are high but the dream falls into a heap, the pain can either bring a downfall or turn into a silver lining for change.

For Noble Park table-tennis star Heming Hu, who recently represented Australia at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the journey has been agonizing but well worth it.

“When I was about 15 or 16, I had my first youth Olympic trials,” he said.

“I unfortunately missed out on making the Australian team by just one spot, essentially one point, and I really struggled to deal with that failure.

“At the time, I viewed it more as a failure than a potential stepping stone because it was always a childhood dream to play in the Olympics in some form of sport.

“I eventually came back when I was around 17, 18 and I just kept going and pushing myself and I was able to represent Australia.

“I fell in love with the game because there are so many different elements about it - what made you a good player was through so many different ways,” he said.

“The feeling of winning in this sport is very good and much different than any other sport.”

But Hu doesn’t plan on stopping and is currently overseas continuing to improve his game and make it professionally.

“I am currently here in Germany playing fulltime table tennis for a club called SV Union Velbert,” he said.

“I came here straight from the Rio Olympic Games to try and improve my standard.

“Here in Germany, it is around four to five hours of training a day, two sessions, on most days.”

While Hu concedes that table-tennis in Australia is just a hobby sport and that has made his journey a little bit more difficult, he strongly believes the future is truly bright.

“The future in Australia is good - there is a lot of young players coming through which is good but for me it all depends on how much time we can spend overseas because here is where most of the improvement and exposure is,” he said.

day, I was pretty tired and I was too sore for the next game anyway,” he said.

“Dad said it just wasn’t possible to play both and it’s up to you – we sat down and had probably a half-hour chat and decided I enjoyed footy more so I chose that.”

It’s a decision that has paid off for the young man, who always dreamt about playing AFL football.

“As a little kid I always loved footy and being a Hawks fan I loved watching Buddy Franklin play, and I guess it’s something I’ve always aspired to do.

“When I go to bed and put my head on the pillow, it’s something I just constantly think about.”

But it’s a current Hawk champion that Battle models his game on.

“Being a Hawks fan and going to most games, I really love watching Jack Gunston and he is someone I look up to and someone I model my game on,” he said.

Looking ahead to next month’s AFL draft, Battle admits it is on his mind a lot, and knows that it’s almost out of his hands where he ends up next.

“I guess it’s an exciting time for all draft prospects, but I try not to think about it but it’s always in the back of my mind,” he said.

But the National Draft is a lottery, and Battle fully understands the possibility of having to relocate interstate.

“It would obviously be hard to move away from home and family,” he said.

“I’m really close to my brother Nick and he’s, basically, my best mate but, in saying that, I’ve wanted this for so long and if the opportunity arises, I’d be happy to go anywhere.”

Noble Park table-tennis star Heming Hu is currently in Germany.

Cricket Victoria has announced its final 13-man squads for both the Country and Metro sides competing at this year’s National Championships in Adelaide.

Dandenong duo Ryan Quirk and Edward Newman are part of the squad which will play 5-15 December against some of the best young talent in the country.

Those who have been selected will prepare for the carnival throughout November through their regular club cricket fixtures, skills sessions, as well as a three-day camp in Geelong.

State Talent Manager Andrew Lynch is pleased with the squad he has assembled and can’t wait to see what the young cricketers can produce.

“It was tough to narrow it down to 13 for both Country and Metro, but we’re thrilled with the make-up of the squads this year,” he said.

“I know the boys are all excited, too.

They’ve been training hard and cannot wait to get on the park in Adelaide.”

Quirk, a young all-rounder from Narre Warren South, is developing nicely in Dandenong’s second XI, and recently struck 51 in Dandenong’s match against FitzroyDoncaster.

Newman, hailing from Black Rock, is a talented top-order batsman, who has cracked into the Panthers first XI, and made a brilliant 71 not-out in Round 4.

In addition to the Under 19 squads, a Cricket Australia Under-17 XI will also compete at the championships.

“It’s also great to see four of our younger guys picked to play for the CA Under-17 XI, which is reward for all their hard work and consistent performances,” Lynch said.

Coup in the city as Munro signs

By Nicholas Creely Dandenong City has secured a major coup signing Stuart Munro as its coach for next season.

The NPL2 club is now the third south-east club Munro has coached, having previously had stints as coach of the Dandenong Thunder and Oakleigh Cannons.

These two stints were highly successful with Munro leading the Thunder to the 2009 VPL minor premiership and the Cannons to the 2006 VPL minor premiership.

The 54-year-old is a former Scottish professional footballer and a highly rated manager.

After his stunning career spanning almost two decades, Munro left to live in Australia and has gone down the coaching path ever since.

During 2011-13, Munro was an assistant coach at A-League club Perth Glory before he returned to the Thunder as its technical director in the newly formed NPL. Munro then left the Thunder and took on the senior coaching position at newly formed women’s club Southern United.

The signing of Munro is going to lift City into a strong position to push for promotion from NPL 2 into the top tier of Victorian football.

The club has also announced Tommy Pondeljak as Munro’s right-hand man.

Poneljak has played at a very high level, featuring both in the A-League and NSL throughout his playing career.

In other NPL 2 news, the Thunder has lost Huss Skendevoric to the A-League club Adelaide United, where he will head up the youth development and women’s football programs.

This leaves the Thunder in search of a new senior coach for the 2017 NPL2 season.

However, the Thunder continues to bring good news in terms of player signings.

Former Socceroo/Bundesliga/English Premier League and A-League veteran Simon Colosimo has put pen to paper for a second season.

Andersen’s antics crush Magpies

By Nicholas Creely DDCA ROUND 3 - DAY TWO REVIEW IT was an incredible day of Turf 1 cricket on Saturday, with contenders such as North Dandenong announcing themselves, a thrilling tie between HSD and Buckley Ridges and an inspiring come from behind victory by Dingley just one of many stories to come out of the weekend.

North Dandenong skipper Jergen Andersen deserves a special mention for his astonishing 9/79 with the ball, leading his side to a crucial victory over struggling Narre Warren.

Cranbourne has followed on from its day one dominance, crushing Dandenong West to the tune of 169 runs in their clash at Greaves Reserve.

The reigning premiers were destructive, brutalizing the Bulls with the bat and out-classing them with the ball.

After the Eagles posted a whopping 7/343 last week, off the back of a mammoth century by skipper Steven Spoljaric, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Bulls to chase down the total against the champs.

However, weather threatened to be the winner early in the contest, after a bout of heavy rain swept the ground only 30 minutes into the first session, forcing the players off the ground before play resumed and the Eagles swooped.

And the Bulls never recovered from a shaky first session, languishing at 5/72, a daunting 271 runs shy of victory.

But a solid partnership between Adam Mason (47) and Sam Weir (25) ensured the Bulls would reach a respectable 174 at the close of play.

Despite the heavy loss, the Bulls had some solid performers, such as skipper Greg Siwes (39) and Ethan French (30), who battled hard at the start of the innings despite wickets tumbling at an alarming rate.

The Eagles spread the load with the ball, with Tim Fathers taking three, skipper Spoljaric, Josh Dinger and Nivin Sathyajith taking two and Cameron Kelly taking one.

Cranbourne face North Dandenong next Saturday in what will be their first home game of the season, while Dandenong West tackles Mordialloc away from home.

VIC PREMIER - ROUND 6 REVIEW DANDENONG has put last week’s debacle behind it, defeating Kingston Hawthorn by three wickets in a tight clash at Walter Galt Reserve on Saturday.

After day one was washed out due to a burst water pipe on a perfect Melbourne day, the Panthers were a team on a mission, knowing all too well the importance of maintaining their momentum in the early parts of the season.

As the game was a two-dayer, the Panthers knew they had to pull a rabbit out of the hat to walk away with the points.

The Hawks opted to bat in overcast conditions, looking to bat the Panthers out of the game.

But despite a sparkling century from Hawks opener Ben Slater (105), the Panthers dominated with the ball, ramping up the pressure in the fiery innings, leaving the Hawks with just 193 in total.

The spearhead was well backed up by the reliable Peter Cassidy (3/31), James Nanopoulos (1/41) and UK spinner Callum Parkinson (1/42), who all troubled the Hawks in contrasting ways.

The Hawks would of have been counting their lucky stars that James Pattinson did not bowl,

with the tall Victorian quick still reduced to being a batsman as he progresses in his return from injury.

With only around 45 overs left in the day to chase down 194, the Panthers destructive opening pair of Brett Forsyth (20) and Tom Donnell (32) got them off to a perfect start, reaching 47 quite quickly.

But both openers fell 11 runs apart to the bowling of Matt Worsnop, leaving the Panthers in a precarious 2/58.

Lincoln Edwards then stepped up for his new club, clipping an elegant and entertaining 83 not out, combining with Nanopolous (16), Pattinson (15) and Parkinson (19) for a series of vital partnerships.

This is not the first time Edwards has played a match-winning knock - back in round two the left-handed recruit made 70 not out in the Panthers win over Monash Tigers.

The Panthers reached the total seven wickets down and 38.1 overs into their innings, keeping their unbeaten start to the season going.
