Sun still shines on Warwick branch

Warwick Rodeo Queen Ashleigh Grant is keen for the Street Parade to return in 2017.

Parade looks likely SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie says there is a “99 per cent chance” the Rodeo Street Parade will return at the 2017 Warwick Rodeo.

Locals and visitors were devastated to learn the Street Parade and Mardi Gras were cancelled ahead of this year’s Rodeo due to changes in the structure and funding of tourism promotion in the region.

Cr Dobie told the Free Times on Wednesday that the council was in active discussions with local community organisations to find a way to revive the Street Parade at least, but was tight-lipped about the specific groups which have been approached.

She said while it was not council’s role to organise civic events such as the parade, it could play a role in facilitating them and had close to $10,000 in funding available to assist a 2017 Street Parade, but that the Mardi Gras was not seen as generating the same level of interest.

“The council is more than happy to work with interested community groups and the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society to see the Street Parade held again at next year’s Rodeo,” Cr Dobie said.

Main street business owner Lynn Bryson of Bryson’s Place said it was “sad” the Street Parade did not feature this year.

“We had quite of few out of town visitors who were really disappointed and hadn’t been aware the Street Parade wasn’t on,” she said.

“I don’t know there’s as much of a call for the Mardi Gras to come back as we still had the markets, but it would be great to see the Street Parade come back as part of the festival.

“I really hope we will see some local groups come together and get behind it for next year.”

While many local businesses would love to see the Saturday Street Parade revived, one person who missed out big time this year was Warwick Rodeo Queen Ashleigh Grant.

Ashleigh is the first Rodeo Queen not to have experienced the thrill and honour of riding down Palmerin Street in the parade and while she was philosophical about it she said it was “a bit disappointing”.

“We did incorporate some other things to provide some entertainment for the public, such as the fashion parade in Rose City Shoppingworld on Saturday,” she said.

“It would be terrific if the Street Parade could return next year, it’s a tradition and I think people would be very happy to see it come back.”

While Ashleigh has been back at work this week after a big weekend

of Rodeo activities she’s due to head off this Sunday 6 November to Canada for two weeks, representing Australian rodeo at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta.

Record crowds flooded through the gates of the 2016 Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals and Pryde’s EasiFeed Warwick Gold Cup over the weekend, with the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society saying crowds were up by a third during the seven day event.

Society spokeswoman Kate Christensen said the wet weather had very little effect on crowd numbers and instead made for more exciting viewing, particularly of the Warwick Rodeo National Finals, with barrel racers pushing their limits in the pouring rain on Friday night as well as the steer wrestlers battling it out in the mud “skiing” their way around the arena.

“Our newly-built shade covers over both the Portley and Cut-out stands proved to be of more benefit than just keeping spectators out of the sun, but protected them from the storms and allowed them to stay on to watch the great rodeo action,” Kate said.

“Thanks once again for supporting the construction of these two shade covers goes out to the Warwick Hack and Pony Club and Riding for the Disabled Warwick.

“Overall, crowds were very well behaved throughout the whole week, with only minor incidences occurring that were quickly dealt with by security and police.

“Live streaming numbers quadrupled this year with the inclusion of live streaming for the full seven days of the event from Monday, 24 October.

“Live streaming was viewed in all states across Australia as well as overseas.”

Warwick Show and Rodeo Society president Dr John Kiss said the crowd was so big this year that workers and ground facilities were under “extreme stress”.

“The volunteer workers should be congratulated, that under very difficult circumstances, they were able to keep the show running and produce a rodeo and campdraft spectacle of a world class quality,” Dr Kiss said.

“Given the dramatic increase in numbers the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society Management Committee has already started planning to cope with an even bigger crowd in 2017 and beyond.

“To the workers, volunteers, sponsors and those contracted to the event from the Warwick community who have done so much work to enable us to run this event, we sincerely thank you all.”

SUNCORP has issued a categorical assurance that it has no plans to close its Warwick branch following the announcement that its Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi branches will close.

As reported in the Free Times last week, the banking and insurance giant will shut the doors of its outlets in the two towns on 20 January next year.

The announcement prompted outrage from customers.

Suncorp said the closures reflected the growing trend of online banking and less of a need for a face-to-face customer service.

As concern mounted over the future of the Warwick branch and after an earlier, lukewarm response which left the option open, Suncorp issued a statement this week saying the Warwick branch on Palmerin Street was staying put.

“There are no plans to close the Warwick store,” a Suncorp spokeswoman said.

“We will continue to invest in regional communities across our many businesses and we will support customers to access the range of options they have for banking with us.”

As well as Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi, Suncorp will also ditch its branches in Miles and Kingaroy.

Manager of Stanthorpe’s Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Katy McKenzie said Suncorp’s decision was “sad for the town and the community as a whole”.

“I think people forget that it’s all about relationships and customer service,” she said.

“The larger banks are actively promoting online services - including home loans.

“Yes, we live in a world of Facebook and iPhones but most people here still love the oneon-one interaction, the conversations.

“You also want to know who you are entrusting your money to - our customers have direct access to myself, our assistant manager Cheryl Pearson and our tellers.

“Our door is always open.”

Suncorp has refused to give specific details about job losses at the Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi branches, saying they were “consulting” and “working closely” with the affected employees.

“Like all service providers, we regularly review our services, channels and locations and make changes based on customer and community behaviour and demands,” Suncorp said in an earlier statement.

“Over the last few years, we have seen a significant change in the way our customers in Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi, and surrounding regions, engage with us.

“Increasingly, customers are choosing to use technology to complete their everyday banking.

“The decision to close a physical store is never taken lightly, but we’re finding that fewer customers choose to do their banking at the store.”

Maranoa MP David Littleproud has labelled the move a “debacle” and said he had made “urgent representations” to Suncorp to access the customer visitation data that it had used when making its decision.

He has called on customers to “vote with their feet” and take their business elsewhere.

A spokeswoman for Mr Littleproud said he was still waiting on a response from Suncorp.

BUSINESS and how to attract it to our small towns will be the topic of a two-day conference at Killarney this weekend, 5 and 6 November.

Killarney Area Promotions Association (KAPA) will host the event, funded by a $4000 from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal program and the Silvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation.

KAPA president Paul Stumkat said the event was the brainchild of vice-president Judy Abernethy and was part of KAPA’s program of making Killarney “one of the best places to live and work on the Southern Downs”.

Ms Abernethy said the conference title was ‘Inspiration for Small Towns - Economic Development’ and will feature keynote speakers from other Australian regions giving presentations on their own economic development journeys and “the good, the bad and the ugly”.

“The conference is designed to inspire Southern Downs local communities on how to bring more business to our communities,” she said.

“It’s significant that it’s being held in Killarney where we already have significant current tourist visitation and very little infrastructure to continue to develop the tourism visits and associated business.

“Business people, tourist operators, individuals interested in economic futures and representatives of community groups throughout the Southern Downs Shire will be encouraged to attend.

“Each individual and each little community which engages with this ‘ideas fest’ for regional economic development will have their own creative responses to the stories and experiences that will be shared during the two days.

Power upgrades are pledged by minister QUEENSLAND’S energy minister Mark Bailey says upgrades to Warwick’s electricity network will ensure a reliable power supply for years to come on the Southern Downs.

A fortnight after the last major blackout to hit Warwick which left thousands of households without power for up to eight hours, Mr Bailey said a 10-year program to provide the Southern Downs community with “a modern, safe and reliable power supply” has now been completed.

Mr Bailey said the $33 million East Warwick substation project to replace the original substation meant the entire backbone of Ergon Energy’s network supplying the region had been upgraded in the past decade.

“The original East Warwick substation had served the community well since 1954, but a modern replacement was needed to meet the future requirements of residents and businesses,” Mr Bailey said.

“The substation, at the intersection of Percy and East streets, supplies power to about 5000 customers in the town and in rural areas to the east of Warwick.

“The project generated more than 40,000 hours of labour work for local tradies and contractors during the 2.5 year construction.”

Legal challenge to Bunnings island

By Jeremy Sollars A GROUP of objectors to the Bunnings development on Warwick’s Condamine River floodplain is a step closer to launching a legal bid to stop the project, following a meeting held in Warwick on Tuesday night.

The controversial plan was approved by councillors at the general meeting last Wednesday, 26 October, and objectors now have another fortnight to lodge an appeal with the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland.

Objector Helen Harm, whose real estate business is on Fitzroy Street, not far from the planned Bunnings site at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets, said she and other local business owners met on Tuesday night, 1 November, to further explore

their legal options and to allocate research and other tasks.

Mrs Harm has also called for residents in the floodplain to contact her to join “a united front” against the development.

“Obviously there will be a cost involved with an appeal and we may need to publicly raise funds,” she said.

“But there is a 99 per cent chance the appeal will go ahead.

“We are a group of affected business owners but this is just as much an issue for the residents who live around us.”

The council received nearly 70 objections against the Bunnings proposal, mainly citing fears that fill to be brought onto the site will worsen the flow of floodwaters.

The proposed fill has been described by objectors as “a 3.8 metre island over two acres”.

Council officers recommended approving the Bunnings plan, with engineers stating the new Bunnings will pose “no significant effect” on flooding in the vicinity.

Appeals against council development approvals are usually negotiated out of court between the parties, but a full-blown hearing in the Planning and Environment Court could easily cost the council a six-figure sum.

Many argued that the new building should be erected on pylons to allow for better and faster flows of floodwater but this was not considered as filling had already been approved in an earlier, separate plan for the site by a previous owner for a

bulky goods retail outlet such as Bunnings or Masters.

The council officers have approved the development and filling on the basis that flooding would not be worsened in a “1 in 100 year” flood scenario, which is the base model used to assess floodplain building across Australia.

The most recent floods in Warwick well exceeded the 1 in 100 model, as did the 1976 flood which recorded the highest flood mark in Warwick’s history.

If accepted by councillors, more than 60 proposed conditions on the development would include a requirement for Bunnings to seal Condamine Street and partially seal Canning Street along the frontages of the new store.

STANTHORPE police say traffic enforcement last weekend resulted in a number of persons being charged.

A routine traffic stop on the New England Highway at Applethorpe about 3am Saturday resulted in a 30-year-old man being charged with drug offences after police located cannabis and a smoking utensil in the vehicle.

A 22-year-old man received a fine of $1170 after being detected by police, utilising radar, travelling in excess of 40 kilometres over the speed limit in Bapaume Road, Bapaume. The incident occurred about 5pm Saturday.

Just after midnight Saturday two persons were intercepted driving vehicles while having excess amounts of alcohol in their system. At 1am Sunday a vehicle being driven by a 40-year-old woman was intercepted on the New England Highway at Applethorpe, the driver blowing .119 per cent. At 3am Saturday a vehicle was stopped in Lock Street, with the 30-yearold male driver recording .15 per cent, three times the legal limit.

Two traffic crashes occurred last week. The female passenger of a vehicle travelling in Folkestone Street was taken to hospital following a crash that occurred about 3pm last Tuesday 25 October when a vehicle leaving a business premises collided with a passing vehicle.

The 28-year-old male driver of a Mitsubishi utility was injured when he lost control of the vehicle, rolling and colliding with a tree on Old Warwick Road, Glen Niven, around 9pm last Wednesday 26 October.

Fr Winterton said the parish had planned to hold a fundraising restoration dinner inside the church on Friday 18 November after the current stage of renovations were due to be completed, but the event has been postponed indefinitely.

He’s also becoming increasingly concerned that the church may not be ready in time for Christmas but with services being held in the Parish Hall next door while the work continues the life of the parish will march on.

The 150th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St Mark’s rolls around in 2018.

Fr Winterton said the current work was “basically the soft stuff”, with major works required on the stonework of the church and its stained glass windows, with those in the nave regarded as the finest collection of work by renowned stained glass worker William Bustard.

While Fr Winterton said St Mark’s was “in no danger of falling down” the black soil beneath the building foundations had caused some sections of the stonework walls to shift over the decades.

As well as that, natural expansion of the lead oxides used in stained glass windows has caused some of them to “bow”, particularly those in the nave.

But repairing them is a project for another time.

UNLIKE St Mary’s Catholic Church in Warwick no historic graves have recently been unearthed at St Mark’s Anglican Church as yet but there’s plenty of work happening as internal renovations progress.

The sandstone church on the corner of Albion and Grafton streets, which dates from 1868, is the scene of the first stage of a major refurbishment, thanks partly to termites who’ve been chewing away at the timber flooring.

Pews have been moved aside as the carpeting in the historic church is gradually pulled up to allow the damaged flooring and electric wiring to be replaced.

As with most projects of its kind, the more the investigations proceed the more the need for additional work becomes evident.

Rector of St Mark’s Anglican Parish Father Rod Winterton said that it was “a bit like opening Pandora’s Box”.

“The more carpet we pull up, the more termite damage we find,” he told said.

“In the area just behind the pulpit the only thing saving me from going through the floor was the carpet itself.

“Eventually we plan to replace the entire floor, but at the moment we’re concentrating on the worst-affected areas.

“As well as re-wiring, the electrical work has also involved installing LED lighting through the church, which far better illuminates our stained glass windows.”

If you would like to get involved in youth concerts, youth week activities, leadership training, and other events, then the Southern Downs’ Young Leaders Program is for you.

Southern Downs Regional Council is committed to supporting the Young Leaders in 2017 in addressing the issues and needs of the young people within our region. This is a chance for young people to make a change to the often heard “there is nothing to do in this place”, by making something happen.

The Young Leaders Program is an opportunity for youth to use their initiative to identify exciting projects for the community.

With the support of the council and the youth workers, Young Leaders develop various skills which are perfect for professional development and great for a resume. The Young Leaders also have the opportunity to work in a fantastic team environment.

Southern Downs community services and major projects manager Michael Bell encouraged young people with a broad range of abilities and

backgrounds to apply.

“Through the Young Leaders program we want to build partnerships across the region, develop opportunities and encourage participation to ensure that our diverse range of young people have a voice and the support to become more independent and self-determining individuals.

“In previous years, Young Leaders have or-

ganised hike challenges, art competitions, engagement forums, concerts, workshops, expos, laser skirmish and festivals just to name a few.

“The Youth Disaster Games held as part of Youth Week, a Girls Empowerment Workshop, an inspirational lunch as part of Disability Action Week, the Young Entrepreneurs Seminar, and Rockin’ EDGEFest are some of the major highlights from the last few years.

“The program also addresses the more serious issues within our region, with Young Leaders tackling social issues that affect young people including homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse and violence”, Mr Bell said.

The Young Leaders support a variety of major community events and have had input into planning schemes, master plans and the youth policy within Southern Downs Regional Council.

Rodeo a winner, but the main street needs to share the love

By Jeremy Sollars THE 2016 Warwick Rodeo was a winner despite the absence of main street events.

Our CBD lacked atmosphere last week in the lead-up to the big weekend and the Free Times will be campaigning for the return of the Street Parade next year, but the main event itself at the Showgrounds was a clear success.

I was at the rodeo Saturday night as a punter and was back there on Sunday taking photos and the ro-

deo spirit was very clearly alive and well.

Crowd numbers were strong, particularly on Sunday with the rodeo National Finals running alongside the Warwick Gold Cup campdraft, giving spectators a good run for their money.

The Geraghty Bar area was pumping on Saturday night when the live entertainment got under way with the younger set letting their collective hair down, and overall the police were happy with behaviour across the weekend.

Sure the wet weather helped to make things interesting and the ponding in the arena added some extra visuals to the bronc and bull riders hitting the deck.

The dream of winning at Warwick - both for rodeo and campdraft competitors alike - still has plenty of allure and competition across all the disciplines was fierce.

We have a year ahead now to look forward to and plan for the 2017 event and it's clear that as a community as a whole we need to re-connect with the Rodeo. There

were all kinds of complicated reasons behind the cancellation of this year's street events and finger-pointing is not going to get us anywhere - we need to move forward. There is promising talk that community organisations may be coming forward to make the Street Parade happen in 2017 which is positive.

The Warwick Rodeo is our biggest event and the visitors and the economic input it brings to Warwick are significant. We undercooked it this year - let's not make the same mistake in 2017.

Letters Give 'em a chance NEW hardware store gets nod from council the first council thing they have made positive. I would like to express my thoughts about Mr Olsen and the real estate lady.

Both have been there in the previous floods and may I suggest to Mr Olsen it might be a good opportunity for him to pack up and move to the old Bunnings store and to the real estate lady there are plenty of empty shops in the main street that would suit your business.

I doubt very much whether any of the people who are complaining about the new store are going to employ as many as the new hardware will and right at this moment we can do with companies willing to spend money to construct businesses like Bunnings.

So to the objectors, think what you will be doing in 10-20 years' time. Please think before you speak on this wonderful development going

ahead, as you may even be working for this company in the future.

Plant has a sting in its tail Casey’s tips

FREE Times gardening columnist BEATRICE HAWKINS toured the town last week with the judges of the 2016 Warwick Horticultural Society’s Floral Windows Competition. She shares her photos from the competition along with her latest musings on all things gardening.

BEAUTIFUL weather, great rain, wonderful weather for gardening great weather for snakes!

Australia, as we all know, has nearly all of the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world and some of the most deadly spiders.

What is not so widely known is that we also have some of the most deadly native plants.

Most of these are in our rainforest areas and fortunately not seen by many people and certainly do not have a place in a domestic garden!

The most dangerous plant in the world is a member of the nettle family, the Dendrocnide moroides or commonly, Gympie Gympie or mulberry leaved stinger.

Its common name gives away its situation.

It is found from Gympie north to the Cape in rain forest areas.

It has an horrendous sting from the small hypodermic style needle hairs on its stems, leaves and fruit. Horses and other animals have been known to die or go insane from the pain of the sting after coming in contact with this horror.

The pain can return for many months after being stung.

Amazingly, the mulberry looking fruit is edible if you can remove the stinging hairs.

Just why you would want to or how you would go about doing this is beyond my imagination.

Seeds are spread by birds so they must be able to handle the stingers.

Valerian is an extremely versatile addition to any garden.

Also the leaves, once boiled, are a nutritious and palatable vegetable similar to the common stinging nettle.

On a nicer note is Valerian. It is a pretty, sweet smelling, usually pink or white flowered, easily-grown peren-

nial, commonly known as the ‘happy herb’ for its many medicinal uses in the treatment of sleep disorders.

Its ground root has a calming effect not only on humans but also on dogs so if Fido is hyperactive it may be useful!

The seeds are not so easy to germinate but once you have a plant it selfseeds and also spreads by runners that can be dug up and replanted to wherever you want them.

They look great in flower gardens

and as a backdrop in herb beds.

I have seen them growing in roadside bank plantings and the range of colours from deep purple through to bright pink and white was beautiful.

They are a good long-lasting cut flower and a great filler flower in an arrangement so are a really good addition to a garden.

It likes a sunny position and a humus rich slightly alkaline soil. On the down side it does like moisture. Seeds sown after the last frost will give a good show over spring and summer.

Colleen O’Brien had some lovely specimens in her second place festival garden during the competition.

Some beautiful window displays were judged on Friday with the Champion display in Rivers window and Reserve champion display in the foyer of the Condamine Accountants.

The winning commercial display was the Criterion Cellars window at the entrance to the Rose City Centre with YMCA at WIRAC and Ooh La La Beaute in Grafton Street receiving encouragement awards. Photos were a bit difficult because of reflections.

Tickets for the bus trip to Stanthorpe on Friday 18 November are available from Danny Lyons.

The tickets include bus fare and homemade morning tea with lunch at your expense at the RSL in Stanthorpe.

The Strawberry fields, Suttons Apple Farm for their famous apple pie and the Cheese factory are just some of the places to be visited. Join us for a fun filled day out.

Bail release for appeal denied A WARWICK man convicted of molesting a girl under 16 years old has been denied release from jail while awaiting the outcome of an appeal.

Following a trial at Toowoomba District Court last month, a jury found the 73-year-old man guilty of maintaining a sexual relationship with a girl under 16 years old and indecent treatment of a child under 16 in his care.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the complainant, molested her when they worked with horses together, including during equestrian events.

The man has appealed his conviction and applied for bail at Brisbane Supreme Court while awaiting the appeal outcome.

Justice Jean Dalton dismissed the bail release application because the man had not demonstrated extraordinary circumstances to justify his release.

Memorabilia bears witness REMEMBRANCE Day is coming up next Friday, 11 November, and the Stanthorpe and District Sub-Section of the Naval Association of Australia is raising funds for veterans through the sale of memorabilia.

Sub-section president Norm Gale said he and other volunteers will be at Soul Pattinson Chemist on Maryland Street and at Spano’s Stanthorpe IGA this week and next selling a range of

badges, figurines, medallions, caps and World War I ‘infantry bears’.

Money raised will go to support veteran organisations including Soldier On and Mates for Mates and local organisations.

The sub-section is also busy preparing for a major event in 2017 – the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The event will include a dinner on the evening of Saturday 6 May at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre and will be attended by the Deputy Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Michael Noonan with invitations also extended to Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Queensland State Governor Paul de Jersey AC. A contingent of US Coral Sea veterans will also be travelling to Stanthorpe

for the anniversary commemorations.

The Battle of the Coral Sea, which was fought from 4 to 8 May 1942, was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theatre of World War II between the Imperial Japanese Navy and naval and air forces of the United States and Australia.

THE Southern Downs Steam Railway will hold a market day this Saturday, 5 November, in the former goods shed at the Warwick Railway Station, on Lyons Street.

The markets will run from 8am to 2pm and all proceeds will go to the Southern Downs Steam Railway.

A jazz evening and barbecue at the goods shed will follow the markets from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday.

The group hopes the markets will become a regular event.

Warwick Chamber of Commerce president Lewis von Stieglitz said the chamber encourages locals to keep

“In particular now that springtime is here we have many local businesses re-stocking for gardening and summer activities so it’s a great time to shop for what you need for those springtime jobs around home.

“We’re also starting to get ready for the Christmas season and our local traders are hoping this will be a pros-

perous season for them.”

Mr von Stieglitz said the Rose City Shoppingworld redevelopment and expansion was a positive for the town.

“It’s good to see local contractors being employed and the contractors working on the project are in turn spending their money in our shops, which is great,” he said.

The Rose City Shoppingworld expansion is going full-steam ahead and owners the McConaghy Group still expect a mid-to-late 2017 opening.

Fitzroy Street has been re-opened to traffic with the section of the street be-

tween Palmerin and Guy streets having been closed off while the McConaghy Group completes works associated with the $40 million expansion of the centre.

“Completion of the Rose City redevelopment is expected in mid-tolate 2017 and will employ up to 300 construction workers,” a McConaghy Group spokesman said last month.

“Local trades are used wherever possible.

“The redevelopment is being staged to keep as much of the centre functioning as possible until full completion.

“The Coles re-opening will be completed in the final stages.

“Formal marketing and negotiations with possible new tenants is underway and announcements of new tenancies will be made at the appropriate time.”

Poppies into view FAY Helwig’s amazing Flanders poppies WWI Remembrance Fields at Glen Aplin on the Granite Belt is open free to the public in the lead-up to Remembrance Day, next Friday 11 November.

Fay says that she recognised in 1995 that the Granite Belt district was not only unique within Australia, but also in the Southern

Hemisphere and no other district possessed the historical battlefield placenames and a climate that allows the Flanders poppies to bloom for Remembrance Day. The poppy fields are at Fay’s property at 113 Mt Stirling Road, Glen Aplin.

ANOTHER chapter has been written into Aussie folklore after the running of the 2016 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. Lloyd Williams was turned out looking as dapper as his clutch of runners, resplendent in top hat as he picked up his record fifth win in the Cup, becoming the most successful owner in the history of the great race.

I hope you found the winner. Kerrin McEvoy who I believe is the form jockey of the carnival rode magnificently to get Almandin ($11) over the line only a short half head in front of International visitor Heartbreak City ($19) while his crazy owners went off. (Imagine what would have happened if they had won).

While last year’s winning jockey Michelle Payne looked on from the judge’s tower she too had plenty to celebrate this year. McEvoy is her brother-in-law and while she was there to cheer him on as her sister Cathy was at home this year only days away from the birth of the McEvoy’s fourth child.

Many form students, you know, the ones who actually study the nuts and bolts of the race rather than the names and colours (which I might add were a tad confusing this year with no fewer than seven runners in blue silks) were quietly confident Almandin was the weight special in the race. A clever preparation by team Williams looked to have the horse thrown into the race at the weights. It was certainly the telling point on the line.

On Saturday in the Derby history was also made when the James Cummings trained Prized Icon saluted. His young trainer proved it is all about breeding and pedigree, and I don’t mean the horses. He became the fourth generation Cummings to train a derby winner.

The Cummings Derby legend began way back in 1948 when great grandfather Jim trained winner Comic Court. Of course his grandfather Bart embellished the fairy-tale with five winners during the course of his stellar career.

James’ father Anthony put his name into the record books in 2012 when Fiveandahalfstar won the race.

It’s not a bad blood line, and I am certain this will not be the last winner this young man trains. Keen to see how long it takes the youngest Cummings to take centre stage on the first Tuesday in November. It really is all fairy-tale stuff to us mere mortals.

While I can’t boast finding the Cup winner, my one winged offsider was cock a hoop after backing the first two over the line backing up from collecting on the Derby winner last Saturday.

Of course now there is one undeniable fact that is hard to come to grips with. With the 2016 Melbourne Cup run and won and the Spring Carnival drawing to a close and the first cricket test of the summer about to get underway in Perth today readers should prepare themselves because Christmas is hurtling towards us like a freight train.

With that in mind, I hope after Tuesday your piggy bank is looking healthier than mine. Someone pass me the form guide for the Oaks please, I think I need to find a winner.

- Casey STORM NO REAL DISTRACTION STANTHORPE golfers were out in force on Saturday and enjoyed great conditions as they teed off in the ever popular M & D Auto Parts two ball Ambrose event.

A mid-afternoon however forced golfers to seek shelter from the rain and lightning which rolled across the course.

Fortunately, the storm passed quite quickly and after the enforced break, players were able to pick up where they left off and completed a full day of golf.

Eric McLellan partnered Shaneen McLellan who was playing in her first competition since joining the club and securing her ALGU handicap. The pair won the Newcomers prize for their performance.

The pin shots at three and 12 were picked up

by Darryl Boekholt while John Spiller showed his golfing skill winning the pin at 17, the pro-pin at 1/10 and also the men’s long drive.

Greg Fraser took the pro-pin at 5/14 and Matt Waterworth collected 9/18.

M and D Auto Parts have had a long association with the golf club and organisers are grateful for their continued support, Judy Spiller joined John presenting the prizes to the winners.

This Saturday is the first medal round of the new season, the November Monthly Medal and putting competition and will be sponsored by Poole’s Produce. The Medal of Medallists will also be decided. The winners of the past 12 monthly medals will play off for the Roy Carnell Memorial Trophy. The equivalent Ladies event is sponsored by Tom and Trish Fittock.

Saturday’s time sheet is on the board, and play will commence from 11.30am.

In other news, the club has scheduled the Christmas break up for 26 November. An invitation is extended to all members. The fun and frivolity will commence following play and the Awards for Men’s and Ladies Golfer of the Year will be presented.

Members are encouraged to indicate their intention to attend by adding their names to the sheet at the clubhouse as soon as possible to assist with catering preparations.

ALL QUIET BUT STILL BUSY IT was a quieter day at the Inglewood Range on Sunday - no shots rang out only the sounds of busy club members on a mission to extend the clubhouse. It was a very successful working bee with a great deal achieved. The work in progress continues, with three more walls to be completed in coming weeks..

This weekend, it is back to the business of shooting with the club hosting a clay target shoot.

SCHNOOR TURNS AROUND SLOW START PAT Schnoor and Val Richardson both suffered slow starts in their association croquet games last week, however when Pat Schnoor hit top gear she produced one break of five, and two breaks of three to score 24. It was a performance good enough to defeat the opposition who scored 20.

Main contributor to that score was Val Shephard who had a break of four.

Meanwhile, Effey Russell and Heather Widderick played singles. Effey pegged out with a score of 26, after two breaks of three, her opponent scored 22 which included one break of three.

IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR PLAYERS THE Golf Croquet group enjoyed ideal playing conditions on Wednesday. The group played two games of doubles.

The first group to hit off Teresa Pyne and Val Fancourt played Justin Liddy and Bev Sullivan and both had a strong game, defeating their opponents 13-11. Justin Liddy may have been on the losing team, however he played well to post a top score of nine. Teresa Pyne hit a hoop in one on the very last shot of the game.

The second group, Liz Ellway and Judy Lock played Pauline and Elaine Brown.

Ellway and Lock had a decisive 13-4 win.

During the game, Liz Ellway pulled off a remarkable shot targeting two of the opposition balls which were well placed to score. She managed to force both away as her own ball ricocheted off them and went through the hoop to score.

In the second round of games, Teresa Pyne and Val Shepherd had a narrow win in a tie break to score a 13-12 win over Elaine Brown and Bev Sullivan.

In this game, Shepherd hit a hoop in one and Payne and Brown shared a top score of seven.

Sally Rowen heads off this weekend on the RFDS Kokoda Challenge.

SUPER SAL TAKES ON TREK SALLY Rowen (Balch) flies out of Brisbane this morning heading for one of the biggest challenges of her life. In typical Sally style, she is heading off on the Kokoda Trail Challenge with plenty of grit and determination; a hefty dose of positive attitude and healthy respect for what awaits her and her fellow trekkers. The group is taking on the Kokoda Trail to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and when Sally left Stanthorpe she had a total of 100 local sponsors on board. When I spoke to Sally prior to heading off she said she was inspired to do the Challenge as a mark of respect to her grandfather and all the Aussie Diggers who fought at Kokoda. She also has a family connection with New Guinea. Of course the opportunity to inspire her two sons and fund-raise for the RFDS as she ticks of a major milestone on her bucket list was a huge incentive.

Sally has raised over $11,400 herself over past months and the team of 10 have to date raised a combined total of $133,089 for RFDS a substantial sum sure to make a difference to our areas more often than we realise.

Of course fund-raising has not closed, and if you wish to donate simply check out Sally’s Facebook page for details. In the meantime, after many months of training it will be one step after the other on the way to reaching a personal goal.

Good luck Super Sal. RED IN HOT FORM ON Friday, the gateballers were fortunate that the weather cleared allowing play to proceed. Andrea Denkewitz, Heather Widderick, Bill Golding, and Carol Verwey played as the White team. Val Fancourt, Les Williams, John Draper, Margaret Dickenson and Pat Schnoor formed the opposing Red team.

The Red team had an outstanding day, winning all four games. Scores were 16 - 6 in game one. Game two proved closer with scores 12-10.

Game three was 18-12 and the final game 14-10.

Pat Schnoor and Margaret Dickenson were most consistent on the day.

On Saturday, six players travelled to Toowoomba Mallet Sports Club. The group enjoyed a mix of games playing triples and team games providing an opportunity to test their skills against different opposition on different courts in a friendly atmosphere. It is in these games that players pick up helpful tips to improve their games.

The visiting group is looking forward to returning the hospitality they were shown when the Toowoomba Club visits Stanthorpe.

STEYN IGNITES SUMMER OF CRICKET BEFORE a ball has been bowled in the International Cricket series this summer, South African quick Dale Steyn has tried to ignite a fuse declaring “if you can cut off the head of the snake, the

Steyn was referring to the South Africans intentions to target Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain Dave Warner in the first test which gets underway later today in Perth. Hopefully, his quip will ignite some interest in the series as enthusiasm for cricket across the board appears to be waning.

With the game played in so many forms, at so many venues and so often cricket looks to be losing its appeal.

Of course the passion among players to wear the baggy green has not diminished as uncapped paceman Joe Mennie will no doubt attest to after his shock inclusion in the Aussie Test Team.

Mennie and veteran Peter Siddle will face off for the final berth in the XI for the first Test this year played at the WACA in a change from tradition.

The Gabba, normally the host for game one will play host to its first day night pink ball Test in December. Well before then, it will be interesting to see if Steyn should have heeded the well worn theory to never provoke a snake - especially if he’s wearing a baggy green and carrying a big bat.

SPORTERS BACK ON DECK AFTER a one week break because of the Stanthorpe, Sporters were back on deck on Sunday.

It was a win for Chook defeating runner-up Phil Zikan. John Walsh and Aaron Simmers figured in the run downs. Simmers also had the best gross of the round. New-comer Terry Roser had the pin shot on the third while Ray Thorn collected the pro pin. John Rawlings and Paul Byrnes each won a meat tray.

A reminder to all Sporters and prospective players tee-off time next Sunday is 7.30-8.30am.

STORM HAS CRICKETERS SCRAMBLING A SHARP heavy storm on Saturday afternoon had Stanthorpe cricketers scrambling to get the covers down on the wickets at the CF White and Sheahan Ovals. Although the covers went down on both wickets, the games were reduced as a result of the rain.

Valleys set their opponents Valleys a target of 119 at the CF White. Curtis Allen contributed the bulk of the Valleys total when he posted his first half century for the season.

In reply, Tenterfield had few answers against the sustained Valleys attack and crumbled to be all out for 74. Curtis Allen backed up his performance with the bat by taking three wickets. There were also tidy bowling performances from Brett Lacey who also claimed three wickets for 12 in his spell and Sandro Steffanon who took two

wickets for 12 runs. Young gun Kirby Morunga finished with the good figures of 1/17. A combination of good bowling and a sharp performance in the field saw Tenterfield dismissed in 22 overs and Valleys earned an early season bonus point.

On the adjacent Sheahan Oval the game between RSL and Wanderers was also affected by the storm. Wanderers in the shortened game posted a credible score of 183. Chris Williams topscored, finishing the innings not out 47. It was a good team performance from the RSL bowlers who all chipped in with wickets. In reply, RSL were dismissed for 140. Luke Brady topped the batting scorecard for RSL with 41 runs.

Bowling honours in the Wanderers line-up went to Andrew Winamp who bowled very tightly and finished with impressive figures of 2/5 to his credit.

We had a beautiful sunny day for the event, with a tricky little wind seeing a good number of members participating in this weekend's shoot.

Next weekend is the first weekend of the month. So we will be holding our scheduled 300-metre round and the club would like to extend an invitation to shooters wishing to join in with exmilitary .303, etc and iron sights rifle event.

We also welcome non-members to give it a go. Just bring your firearms licence, driver's licence - firearms up to .30 calibre, ammo, $20 and you're good to go.

The club also has a selection of scoped and iron sighted rifles and ammunition for use by non-members (fees apply) wishing to

experience a morning's shooting in our friendly club environment.
