Curse is beaten By Alana Mitchelson OVER the past 20 years, no outgoing mayor has been re-elected to Cardinia Shire Council for back-to-back terms. History was made on Saturday when the election results were finalised and former mayor Jodie Owen retained her seat on Central Ward with more than 16 per cent of first preference votes. Ms Owen captured the attention and respect from members of the community early in her year as mayor after her courageous and highly personal speech against family violence at the Together We Can campaign launch. “A huge thankyou to everyone for their support and faith in re-electing me to another four years,” she said. “One of the highlights for me was being mayor during the federal election and working with candidates regardless of what political party they represented. “I am also proud to say that Cardinia Shire has now been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an age-friendly city.” Ms Owen said the new additions of Michael Schilling and Carol Ryan were a “real win” for Central Ward. She said that, moving forward, one of her focuses would be to ensure more support for children with autism as the population of the region continued to grow. Cardinia Shire’s most popular councillor Collin Ross was again reelected by a landslide vote, receiving 7200 first preference votes; an increase of more than 1500 in comparison to the previous election. “It’s a real honour. People get to know you after a while and I think I’m trusted as a councillor because I’m true to my word,” Mr Ross said. “I’ve promised the community I’d support them on rate increases and I’ve honoured that every year on council even though that hasn’t made me popu-

Central Ward has been graced by two fresh faces: Michael Schilling and Carol Ryan.

Mr Schilling said he felt his successful election campaign came down to extensive face-to-face contact with members of the community. “I used opportunities to meet with people,” he said. “I think all of us (Central Ward councillors) are community-minded and share a similar direction. I think we’ll have a good working relationship and will together achieve great things. “I congratulate Kate who has served on the council for a long time and has been a passionate advocate for the community. between us so it was very slim.” With his affiliation with the Australian Greens Party, Mr Schilling will focus on social inclusion, disability advocacy and local literacy. Another newbie Carol Ryan said she was surprised by the election results. “I was a bit numb to find out that I was voted in. It makes you realise all the people who are behind you,” Ms Ryan said. “I hope to give seniors a voice and am already working on a project to
help interaction between youth and seniors.” Ms Ryan also planned to advocate for improved roads, footpaths and bus services. Former Central Ward councillor Kate Lempriere and Port Ward councillor David Young were unsuccessful in being re-elected. Ms Lempriere wished the new Cardinia council success. “The innuendo and negative front page article based on hearsay and rumours or disaffected people by the Gazette did all it could to paint a suggested negative picture of me one week out from the election,” she said. “I have never had or continue to have any intention or interest in creating a negative picture of the CEO or staff because I love Pakenham and Cardinia and have fought to create all that is beneficial for the advancement of a creative, happy life in an environment we are proud to call home. “I lost and must accept that on the chin.” David Young thanked residents for their support over the past four years. “It has been a pleasure getting to know many more of the Port Ward residents during my term. I would wish them all well as the shire undergoes an ever-increasing pace of change,” he said. “I would also like to congratulate the two successful candidates for Port Ward, Graeme Moore and Ray Brown. I know that they will have the best interests of the ward and of Cardinia Shire at heart.” Brett Owen, Leticia Wilmot and Graeme Moore also retained their seats, with the addition of Ray Brown and Jeff Springfield representing Port Ward and Ranges Ward respectively. Police seek car vandal By Victoria Stone-Meadows POLICE are seeking public assistance to find a man who vandalised a car at the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in Narre Warren on Wednesday 26 October. It is believed an unknown man walked up to the victim’s car in the car park of the shopping centre about 10am and used some implement to scratch the front and sides of the car. Police have released an image of a man they wish to speak to in regard to the vandalism incident, hoping someone in the community may recognise him. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

New school named By Alana Mitchelson THE shire’s rich history has inspired the renaming of Pakenham’s newest primary school. Previously referred to as Pakenham South West Primary School, the Henry Road school has now been officially renamed the John Henry Primary School after a prominent community figure. School principal Tanya Roberts said the build was on track for classes to commence in term one next year for Prep to Grade 6 and that the school uniforms were ready. She said that the majority of the 330 children who had enrolled lived within walking distance of the school, or would be able to ride their bikes and scooters. “We’re thrilled to have a school name that reflects a local figure known for his generosity and deep involvement and connection with his community. This same spirit will be embodied by our school,” Ms Roberts said. “We’ve been running a transition program every Wednesday this term from 4.30pm with our 23 teaching staff, parents and students to talk about our school values. “We’ve also had fun activities for the kids to get to know each other - a teddy bear picnic, reading time and we have a disco coming up.” The Henry Road Primary School
will have an early learning centre, a multi-purpose space, an expanded gymnasium, embedded environmental sustainability education and meeting rooms for community use. Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino visited the construction site on Friday 21 October. “John Henry Primary School will be more than just a great local school, it will provide a thriving hub that brings families and community groups together,” he said. “We are proud to unveil this exciting new school’s name, a name that acknowledges Pakenham’s history as part of a school that will help build its future.” John Henry was a local land and station owner who was renowned for his community spirit, along with his wife Lavinia. The couple were described as “untiring workers for every worthwhile movement in the district” and many charitable organisations benefited greatly from their active help and generosity. The Henry family gave the school permission to use their ancestor’s name. THE outstanding community spirit of the Pakenham Bowls Club will once again come to the fore at Saturday’s charity day to raise funds for a great cause - Very Special Kids. Very Special Kids cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional family support services. VSK helps more than 900 families across Victoria with ongoing support from diagnosis all the way through to recovery or bereavement. Mr Wells said doctors put Ms Toner into hypothermia for 24 hours, keeping her body temperature at 36 degrees. “That’s a new treatment they’re doing on patients who have a cardiac arrest,” he said. “It reduces brain damage.

STRESS sent Kathryne Toner’s heart into cardiac arrest. Her partner’s CPR training saved her life. “I had a lot of stress, a lot of financial problems and family problems,” the Doveton 45-year-old said. “I thought I could sort everything out, I thought I could fix everything. “My heart was exhausted. “I had a stress-induced cardio myopathy.” Ms Toner’s “hero” Simon Wells said there was a Japanese word for the condition that translated as broken heart syndrome. “She basically worried herself into a cardiac arrest,” he said. Her eyes were open, her pupils were fixed and dilated and she was gasping for breath. He called an ambulance and turned to his CPR training. “The first compression I heard a huge crack, and I thought ‘oh my goodness’,” he said. Ms Toner said: “I’d rather have a crack in my chest than be dead.” Mr Wells continued the chest compressions and breaths for 10 to 15 minutes, until four ambulances, a fire engine and an intensive care paramedic arrived. “They watched me for a few minutes while they were setting their gear up and assessing the situation,” he said. “They tapped me on the shoulder and said ’you’re right mate’ and they took me off and took over. “It took them another 15 minutes to revive her, just to get a heartbeat. “It was very loud, the defibrillator. I could hear it working and she wasn’t responding to it.

It’s turned my life around, basically,” she said. “I’ve been a long-time sufferer of depression. “I always thought there was someone worse off than me. “My aim is to let people know that if you’re highly stressed and got a lot on your plate to seek help. “I’m getting the help I need.” Ms Toner couldn’t speak highly enough of Mr Wells’ actions, and was thankful he was home. “Normally, he would have been at work, I would have been home alone,” she said. “If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be sitting here today. “He’s a hero in my eyes.” But Mr Wells shrugged off the label. “Anyone in the same situation would have done the same thing,” he said. He instead directed the praise to his CPR training and defibrillators. “I think it’s hugely important for people to get CPR training,” he said. “If there’s not a defibrillator in your office, there should be one. “They should be everywhere. “All CPR does is supply your brain and your organs with oxygen until you can be revived. “Kathryne went into a fatal heart arrhythmia. “Without a defibrillator she wouldn’t have survived. “CPR would never have revived her.” Call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for 24hour support.

School hopes to regain its capsule of memories
AN IMPRESSIVE bevy of budding reporters are creating a splash at Berwick Fields Primary School. Year 5 students Biya, Leah, Jett, Alicia, Summer, Grace and Isabella, with Live Out Loud’s Sue Nelson and Steve Bruskill, invited a Star News journalist to judge a newspaper reporting competition. The cadet newshounds impressed with their catchy headlines, snappy photographs and well-constructed reports all punchily presented on Powerpoint to a packed theatre of 200 of their peers. They had written reports on their own laud-worthy projects such as after-school sport programs, saving ocean animals from nations of plastic, homelessness care packages and stopping deforestation. Live Out Loud member and former principal Sue Nelson said the competition was designed to get students out of their comfort zones as well as encouraging them to write and work as a team. CRANBOURNE Secondary College will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next month but assistant principal George Massouris is hoping someone can help find the time capsule before then. The time capsule was buried somewhere on the school grounds in 1979 but was not given a marker and all records of its location have been lost over time. “We want to locate it and put a marker there so we can dig it up when it’s time,� Mr Massouris said. “At this point we are trying to locate it and it is a mystery where it is or what is buried inside it.� The school is asking anyone who may have some information about the whereabouts of the time capsule to get in touch with the school before the 40-year anniversary. As well as information about the capsule, the school is asking anyone with interesting mementos from the last 40 years to lend them out for the anniversary celebration. “We are looking for anything people have relating to the history of Cranbourne Secondary College to be brought to the front office for photographing or we can look after it for the event,� Mr Massouris said. “We want to bring back stuff for the show to bring back memories for people.� The anniversary celebration will have these items on display in the gym as well as movies and photos from the past 40 years and current and past students performing songs from their eras.

Climb for a cause A NARRE Warren North fire-fighter will be tackling 88 storeys of stairs in full fire-fighting gear later this month when he takes on the Eureka Climb challenge. Andrew Norman, 26, from Endeavour Hills will be raising money and representing the Narre Warren North CFA when he climbs the stairs of Eureka Tower to raise money for charity. Mr Norman will be carrying 23 kilograms of fire-fighting equip-
ment from the base of the tower up 300 metres of vertical staircase to the Eureka Skydeck for the fourth year in a row. The first year I did it, I thought the cause was really good and the two foundations do really great work,” Mr Norman said. “Along the way I’ve found it is still a good thing to do.” Mr Norman said he didn’t just do the stair climb for himself, but to help other people who were participating as well. “I often help people with self-
motivation - if they are struggling up the stairs I encourage them to keep going; I’m there to help others as well.” Participants in the Eureka Climb challenge raise money through sponsorship and entry fees that go towards the charities Interplast and Whitelion. Interplast sends medical teams to developing countries to provide life-saving treatment to some of the world’s most desperate people. Whitelion works with disadvantaged young people to break cycles
of physical and drug abuse to improve their futures. Mr Norman will be taking on the challage of a timed climb and is hoping to beat his personal best time of 11.5 minutes and is quietly confident he could be the fastest climber on the day. “I think I’m in with a chance but there are some quick people out there,” he said. The Eureka Climb Challenge will take place on Sunday 13 November, with staggered starts throughout the day.

Festive cheer with cheese mix THERE’S nothing more reliable, easy and crowdpleasing than cheese when entertaining and Australia is home to some of the best producers in the world. With the festive season on the doorstep and the inevitable increase in cocktail parties, long lunches and Sunday afternoon drinks, The Dairy Kitchen has put together a guide with everything you need to know to impress your guests with cheese from our own dairy regions these holidays. 1. Variety is key: Serving up the perfect cheese platter is all about nailing the texture and flavour combinations. Three cheeses on a platter is a good rule of thumb. Choose something soft, something strong and something hard like brie, blue and cheddar. Likewise with the accompaniments, go for something crunchy, something sweet and something tangy to refresh the palate. Try like nuts, fruit and pickles or apple for the perfect balanced cheese board. 2. Buy Australian: Show support for Australian producers and choose Australian cheese this Christmas. Whether at a farmers market, from a cheesemonger or at the supermarket, there is a locally produced cheese out there to suit every palate. 3. Ripe cheese: Cheese is a bit like fruit in that it changes with the season and should be consumed when ‘ripe’ for optimal flavour and texture. Ask a cheesemonger for their recommendation on what’s ripe and ready for eating. Make sure to ask to taste it too! If at the supermarket, look for cheeses within a week or so of their best before date because this is usually when they’re at their peak. When choosing whole wheels of soft ripened cheeses like brie or camembert, test it like an avocado – if it feels slightly soft, it’s probably going to be ripe and oozy when it is served. If it’s hard, then it probably needs a little longer to mature.
4. Pantry prep: Interesting accompaniments don’t require too much effort and most pantries are usually packed full of the perfect things to jazz up a cheese board. Think honey on blue cheese or balsamic glaze on a wedge of parmesan. Walnuts go well with almost all cheeses, and add a flourish with fresh or dried fruit, pickled vegetables or a sprinkling of dukkah. 5. Keep it in the fridge! It’s handy to have some cheese on hand for the inevitable and spontaneous drop-ins throughout the festive season. Cheese is the perfect ‘go to’ when unprepared
as it takes minimal effort for maximum impact and flavour. Hard varieties such as parmesan and cheddar can be stored in the fridge for long periods and they match with just about everything in a pantry. 6. The room temperature rule: The cardinal rule of serving cheese is to always serve it at room temperature so take it out of the fridge about an hour before serving, or 20 to 30 minutes if it’s hot. You can arrange the cheese board and cover it with a barely damp tea towel to keep the cheese from drying out.
Fresh cheeses such as mozzarella, burrata, ricotta and labne should be served cool. 7. Don’t waste! So long as it’s not sweating away in the sun, there’s no reason to waste any leftover cheese. There are plenty of things that can be done with that little nugget leftover at the end. Ricotta can be sprinkled on spaghetti, cheddar can be grated for sandwiches, and camembert can be served over chicken. All this, of course, assumes that there are leftovers to be saved.

A flat dark pigmented lesion on the crown of a woman in her fifties. 160082 A LENTIGO maligna (literally a ‘malignant freckle’) is a very slow growing but insidious type of melanoma occurring on the sun damaged skin of people from their forties onwards. They are particularly common on the head and neck. They are sometimes so slow growing that the person will ‘get used to them’ and not recognise them as a problem even when they occur in very visible sites such as the face. Furthermore the person’s friends, relatives or even doctor may not recognise a lentigo maligna from other benign freckles and pigmentations. Untreated however lentigo maligna will expand and invade and eventually become as dangerous as any other melanoma. The treatment is complete surgical excision so early diagnosis is very important to try to avoid large excision or graft repair scars. Dermoscopy (examination of the skin under bright light and 20x magnification) can be very

Ex-cop swaps law for lens By Cam Lucadou-Wells DAMIEN Howard has swapped his police badge for the camera lens as he seeks to make a TAC-style “shock� commercial against family violence. He covered the Casey beat for seven years as a cop and said more needs to be done to stop the scourge. “There are a lot of organisations doing great work for victims but I feel it’s not enough - especially considering the number of people affected. “It’s a wonder the campaign’s not seen everywhere - on bus shelters and in school curriculums.� Shockingly, a woman is killed every week in Australia at the hands of her current or former partner. Mr Howard has seen hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. He said no other issue took up so much police time. “It’s always the stuff to do with kids that gets to me,� Mr Howard said. “It’s also when you see a dog neglected. It’s more the innocent victims that shakes me up.� He said one in four children experience family violence and then copy their parents’ tortured dynamics. They copy those “little things� that go under the radar and as a result they are three times more likely to be perpetrators or victims of family violence as adults. In his advertisement Mr Howard intends to show not only the impact on the partner but also the damage to her children. “It will show there are many victims of domestic violence and how it destroys lives. “It’s designed to educate and shock.� Mr Howard has seen brutal relationships maintained without complaint

10-year limit on his time on the police force. He had enjoyed the job, its variety and working in the community. It was busy and it got busier as Casey’s population exponentially grew. He then walked out to pursue his long-held dream to be a film-maker. They’re timeless. “I watch them with my own kids and I can see myself watching them with my grandkids.� His long-held goal was to work in the US as a director. When he won a scholarship to LA, it further whetted his appetite. It opened his eyes to the creative deluge of film and TV produced in Hollywood where film students inspired him with their proactivity, passion and hard work. “In any job, I thought I’d retire at 60. But I don’t think I’ll retire as a film-maker. “It’s not about the money. It’s about when you go to a movie and you feel moved - that feels amazing.� Mr Howard’s works don’t shy from difficult subjects. He has produced works on depression and on cagefighting’s positive influence on disaffected youth. Bollywood blast By Cam Lucadou-Wells ENDEAVOUR Hills couple Deo and Kusum Narayan have laid it on the line to make their first featurelength Bollywood movie, WOH. Inspired by Deo’s long-held movie-making dream, the pair selffunded the Hindi film’s $120,000 production and marketing budget. With little experience but with a long line of loyal friends and a compelling storyline, they managed a cast of 130 actors shooting in homes and locations in Hallam, Cranbourne, Endeavour Hills and Dandenong. WOH, a Hindi word for ‘that’, is about heartbroken girl Costina who returns from London after the breakdown of her marriage. She then gets involved with a troubled man accused of murdering his mother-in-law and described as “deeper than the ocean”. Deo said the couple tried to highlight the challenges for some migrants settling in Australia. “I personally feel that the most challenging issue people throughout the world are facing is integration. “Bollywood’s recent trend towards very commercialised films with a limited number of subjects .... had failed to provide much education to the people.” During the film’s making, Melbourne actors of many backgrounds were integrated, resulting in a rewrite of the Hindi language

Council looks to cut out golf day CASEY council is considering dumping its sponsorship of a charity golf day which is named after its mayor. The council resolved to review its $4000 sponsorship of Narre Warren Rotary Club’s Mayoral Shield Golf Day after Casey officers recommended halving support for the 18 November event. Officers described the sponsorship benefits to Casey as “limited” and that the golf day’s $12,600 “surplus” in 2015 made its sponsorship redundant. “This (halved) funding recognises council’s historical arrangement... and ensures ongoing provision of the planned golf day event,” the report stated. At an 18 October council meeting, councillor Wayne Smith moved for retaining a one-off full sponsorship of next month’s golf day. He argued it was unwise to announce a review and pre-emptively halve the golf day’s funding. “I’d hate to think the club would pick up the
paper or read the council agenda, and see we’re halving it.” The officers’ report said the event had limited community appeal. “The Rotary Golf Day meets few of the objectives of the (council’s) event sponsorship program,” the report stated. “Council’s opportunity to promote its services and key messages are limited at this event.” It attracted a “relatively low” 100 participants and not many visitors to Casey, the officers’ report stated. The golf day was smaller than other council-sponsored events such as the Berwick Show and the Tricodes Night at Cranbourne Racecourse, according to the report. Casey had sponsored the annual Rotary fundraiser for several years. The 18-round golf day funds mainly local Rotary projects as well as some international initiatives. The Rotary Club of Narre Warren was unable to comment prior to deadline.

Ready to Battle the draft of the day, I couldn’t be more grateful to that person for saying that to me. “It was such a driving force for me throughout pre-season and it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get fitter and work a lot harder. “That same club has spoken to me this year so I’d be grateful if given the chance with them. “I’ve really worked hard on a lot of things; being that third tall forward you have to add a few more strings to your bow and I wasn’t great with my endurance. “I did a lot of extra work and extra sessions and now I strongly believe that is one of my strengths now. “I pride myself on running my opponents ragged and I just try to isolate myself in dangerous positions,” Battle said. Battle, who will have his name read out at next month’s AFL National Draft, was also a talented junior cricketer, and had to make a tough decision a
few years ago on which sport to pursue. “It was a pretty hard decision, but Dad sort of – after a long day of cricket – noticed it was all too much, and then having footy practice the next day, I was pretty tired and I was too sore for the next game anyway. “Dad said it just wasn’t possible to play both and it’s up to you – we sat down and had probably a half-hour chat and decided I enjoyed footy more so I chose that,” Battle said. It’s a decision that has paid off for the young man, who always dreamt about playing AFL football. “As a little kid I always loved footy and being a Hawks fan I loved watching Buddy Franklin play, and I guess it’s something I’ve always aspired to do. “When I go to bed and put my head on the pillow, it’s something I just constantly think about.” But it’s a current Hawk

Get set for Oaks Day at Pakenham By David Nagel THE focus of the racing world will no doubt be on fabulous Flemington on Thursday for the running of the $1 million Crown Oaks, but the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day at Racing. com Park will have a unique and special charm of its own. Oaks Day at the Pakenham Racing Club is one of the two biggest days on the calendar, sitting proudly alongside the Pakenham Cup as two of the great social events in the district. And while the day will lack nothing in comparison to Flemington when it comes to the glitz and glamour - with the fillies decked out in their finest – on track it provides local owners, trainers and jockeys with the chance to strike on one
of the big days of the spring carnival. There will be no sign of the royal blue of the rich and powerful Godolphin stable, leaving the rich end of the purse for the trainers off Broadway. The eight-race card will be split down the middle, with four maidens the entree to 0-58 handicaps run over the 1000, 1200, 1400 and 1600-metre journeys. Local trainers Daryl Timms, Gareth Andrews, Todd Balfour and Michael Ryan all saluted at Tynong on Oaks Day last year and plenty more locals will be keen to put their stamp on the meeting. SOMETIMES the tough conversations in life are the ones that truly make a difference. That’s certainly the case for draft prospect Josh Battle, who in November 2015, walked into an AFL club for a routine draft interview. The 18-year-old key-forward, who had been a success in the TAC Cup program for the Dandenong Stingrays, was blindsided by a series of stinging hard truths about his game. “It was actually my first ever interview with an AFL club so I didn’t know what to expect. “They asked me “how do you think you’d go at the top level?” and we got into a pretty in-depth conversation and they blatantly just told me that my endurance wasn’t good enough and that I’m only a one position player and almost undraftable. “Thinking back to that moment, it did hurt but at the end

Upper-Beaconsfield continues to go from strength-to-strength with another commanding performance against top of the ladder Pakenham. The early season blockbuster saw the Maroons sent in to bat at Upper Beaconsfield Reserve, where they posted an ominous 257 off 74.4 overs. Jonathon Caderamanpulle (85) and Scott Pitcher (55) both made half-centuries, while skipper Bathiya Perera (37) chimed in with a solid knock in the middle order.
