Flood of concern By Monique Kuzeff LANDHOLDERS seeking answers from the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) in regard to the management and outflow of the Hume Dam in recent weeks had their voices heard on Monday when their concerns were addressed at a meeting. The meeting enabled some 20 landholders, with properties downstream from the Hume Dam, to raise their concerns to MDBA river operations management and Farrer MP Sussan Ley over inadequate communication from the MDBA during outflows in recent weeks. Recent flooding has caused many landholders grief when they have had to move stock and equipment to other grounds without sufficient warning from the MDBA which resulted in many damaged properties. The meeting gave landholders the opportunity to discuss communication methods and understand better the dam operations and ways in which it could be improved. MDBA executive director River Management David Dreverman said he understood that landholders were seeking better communication from the department but not necessarily a change in communication methods. “I’m not sure it’s the communication methods. We’ve got a lot of technology that a lot of people haven’t kept up with and we do have a challenge between ourselves as the dam operator,” Mr Dreverman told media. “We are not responsible for the flood watches and flood warnings, they’re issued by the Bureau of Meteorology but people are looking for more information about what’s happening at the dam.

“We are not actually making the decisions other than to pass the inflow. We use what little airspace we have to take the top of the peak, so when the inflow is 110,000 (megalitres), we let 75,000 out.” Mr Dreverman said during the flooding period, the dam had been operated strictly within accordance with the rules the MDBA was required to operate by. “The flooding is a result of significant inflows, the dam does nothing but make the flood peak smaller than otherwise it would’ve been,” he said. “It’s been 20 years since we’ve had a flood of this magnitude even though we’ve had an inflow of events of similar magnitude in the meantime, but we’ve managed to capture those. “But when the dam is close to full it’s very hard not to have to pass most of the inflow downstream as it arrives.” Landholder Ann McHardy, who breeds thoroughbred horses and cattle on her 190 acres of land near the Albury Airport, suffered significant damage to her property which she believes will cost her several hundred thousand dollars. Having attended the meeting, Ms McHardy said it was good to voice her frustration over the poor communication from the MDBA. “The problem was that we didn’t get any prior warning to what they were going to do (such as) release the gates and it’s just not good enough,” she said. “I think if we are given notice at least 24 hours (before water is released) that gives us time to move all our stock in to safer positions or onto other property but we weren’t given that opportunity.” - Continued page 5

Party for a great cause By Monique Kuzeff FOR Wodogna Men’s Shed, Christmas has come very early, with generous donations streaming in to the not-for-profit group. The construction of a new Men’s Shed facility at Jamieson Court in Wodonga is looking more promising for members after they received a $20,000 donation from McRae Motors staff and management who gave up their Christmas party

The Men’s Shed offers men a place to get together socialise and share and develop skills and relate experiences. It also enables men to build on their health and well-being. “The most important thing we do is we talk to each other, and this is a very important aspect of the shed where we attract people who are in danger of being lonely and falling in to a state of depression,” Mr Farrar said. “In the shed, we are able to manufacture things, work on hobbies, and build things for other people and now we will be able to offer that to more people because we will have more space and time in the new shed.” October was a robust month for the Men’s Shed’s 12-month target which saw the group receive a further $60,000 grant from the Federal Government to assist them further. The shed will be built in a rectangular shape with space of about 30 X 15 metres, and is ex-

pected to accommodate up to three times as many people inside than the current shed can. The money will also go towards fitting the shed out with a number of internal rooms and also towards landscaping. McRae Motors sales manager Gary Dundas said Christmas parties could be a substantial cost to larger companies who employ a lot of people, and the McRae Motors team agreed to give up this year’s party amount and donate it to the Men’s Shed. “We decided to forgo one night of partying and make a difference to a worthy cause,” Mr Dundas said. “A lot of people know a man in the community who may be a little bit lost once circumstances change in their lives and they may not have a lot of people to associate with. “This is a charity that is close to our heart.”

Funding to help recovery BARNAWARTHA residents will receive a little extra support to recover from the bushfire that engulfed the area last summer. Recently the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino announced a further $60,000 to extend the role of

the Indigo Shire Council’s Recovery Support Officer up until December next year. “The 2015 bushfire had a devastating impact on the Barnawartha community and this extra funding will help with the recovery that is still under-

way,” Mr Merlino said. Over the past year, the Recovery Support Officer has played an integral role in helping the community recover from the bushfire, including helping residents with resettlement and involving the community in recovery plan-

ning and bushfire preparedness. Forecasts show potential for an above average fire season again this year, despite the recent heavy rain and flooding in many parts of the state. Victorians are being urged to talk

with family, friends and neighbours about fire risk and plan for what they will do on hot, dry, windy days in the upcoming fire season. The CFA and the MFB will also be out talking to the community about what they can do to be fire ready.

Costly taggers cop a spray from mayor By Monique Kuzeff THE cost of “ugly” graffiti in Albury is over $100,000 a year to clean up which is why AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack urged locals to roll-up their sleeves and help remove graffiti from around the community on Graffiti Removal Day that occurred on Sunday. The aim was to send a loud clear message to those vadalising local businesses, households and council buildings with their tagging that graffiti vandalism is not welcome. Groups of volunteers helped clean tags and other forms of graffiti off buildings in Albury, including at the heritage listed Albury Railway Station. “It’s pretty bad in Albury and exponentially grows every month,” Cr Mack said. “It’s a cost roughly around $120,000 a year to us to clean it off, and for the State it’s in the millions. “In terms of the look of our city, the attraction of our city is the water ways, is the beautiful landscapes but that is a blot on our landscape.” Cr Mack said the money used to remove graffiti from around the community could be invested in to roads, sporting facilities, schools and hospitals.

He said there was a strategy council would be initiating in the coming months which would also see a complete clean down. “We’ve done a lot of different graffiti strategies (such as) wrapped electricity boxes, wrapped the new zone down in behind the car park and its fantastic but it comes at a cost. “Hopefully we can start from scratch and start charging some offenders with this behavior because that’s the only way it’s going to stop.” Melbourne company Group Systems previously did an audit on the graffiti in Albury identifying areas that have been vandalised. Living to give By Monique Kuzeff WITHOUT volunteers the GIGS Art Gallery on Gateway Island would not be able to exist - and that’s why committee co-ordinator Fiona VanderWeyde is calling on new volunteers to join the shrinking team. Having been around for eight years, GIGS Art Gallery is a not-for-profit organisation that functions on grants and the tremendous support of volunteers who help with keeping the venue running. The gallery is a huge supporter of local emerging artists, offering a space where they are able to showcase and sell their works to the broader community, network with other artists and build their brand at an affordable cost. But currently there are only 15 volunteers and that has decreased from 30 over the past year due to people going away on school holidays and falling ill. Ms VanderWeyde said that as a notfor-profit organisation, the gallery re-

lied on volunteers as the support line to keep it functioning. “We are asking for fresh faces and fresh ideas on the committee and to keep the energy alive here. “It’s just nice to keep a larger pool which is something we’ve lost because we may get three or four volunteers but then we lose five, so it’s difficult to keep the base full.” Ms VanderWeyde said volunteers were only required to offer a small amount of their time and commitment, with all shifts being a three-hour timeframe. “A three-hour shift is all we ask them to do and if the most they can do is once a month, that’s all we ask for and appreciate that. “We have some volunteers who only do weekly, some who do fortnightly and others who just do it now and then - it’s also great to have emergency volunteers so if someone rings in sick they can come in.”

Volunteering involves opening up and closing the store, placing signs and flags out, ensuring everything is neat and tidy and other similar tasks. A team of three or more people is also required to assist in hanging new artworks in the consignment once a month. According to Ms VanderWeyde, Gig Art Gallery is the only gallery in the near vicinity that completely supports local artists, and that brings a richness to the community. “I don’t think there’s anywhere in the area that support local artists and allows them to have their works here on display for sale,” she said. “We support emerging artists, firsttime exhibitors and it's always really daunting for them if they’ve never had an exhibition.” If you would like to support your local art gallery and become a volunteer, you can email Ms VanderWeyde on admin@gigsgallery.com.au

IN 2015, over 3000 people took their own life which was more than double the road toll that year, according to Suicide Prevention Albury Wodonga (SPAW) chairperson Richard Brown. “On a national scale suicide is currently the leading cause of death of all people aged between 15 and 44 years of age,” Mr Brown said. “Suicide figures have been increasing for some years now, with the suicide toll on the Border sitting above the national average. “It’s a problem that’s actually very big and not many people realise that.” In a bid to raise awareness of suicide prevention and depression in the community, over 100 motorbike riders participating in the Victoria ‘Black Dog Ride’ joined together for breakfast at Junction Square on Sunday. The Black Dog Ride was initiated in 2009 and before the initiative developed into a national suicide prevention charity, it all started as one man’s ride to raise awareness of depression.

She also suggested the peak inflow be reduced to ensure a steadier outflow over a longer period of time. Together with the SES and other emergency services, Ms Ley said that she would work out a better protocol for communicating during emergency events. “The answer is to see how we can do better in managing what are inevitable outflows,” she said. “With the authority taking those steps, I think we will get a much better system in place and will make a much bigger difference next time.” Currently the Hume Dam sits at 99.2 per cent full, with the inflows falling and no significant rainfall expect in the forecast.

DRAPED in the theme of Halloween, a flock of scary Melrose Primary School students walked to Willow Park last week as part of the state-wide Walk to School campaign on Friday. Over 320 Melrose Primary School students participated in the campaign which aimed to promote healthy behaviors in kids in a way that is free, easy and fun. The school has been taking part in the Walk to School campaign for over three years and this year it saw several local sports associations get on board at the event to promote extracurricular activities including soccer, gymnastics, and dance. Melrose Primary School assistant principal Heidi McKay said the event was also a celebration of kids who had made the effort to scoot, ride or walk to school in recent months. “They’re practicing and they’re developing healthy life habits through physical exercise,” Ms McKay said. “We know that 60 minutes of activity a day is ideal for kids, if not more, and we are trying to promote that. “We also know that physical activity helps us mentally and mental health is a massive issue so as a school our focus is placed equally on academic intelligence and emotional intelligence.”

Ms McKay said while there were some concerns in the community around primary aged kids walking to school, they were also being educated around walking with others. “It is an issue but a lot of our kids are zoned and live close by so they do walk,” she said. “Walking to school is a community-minded thing and we encourage them to walk to school with other people they know and connect and share experiences to help develop social relationships. “For those kids that get dropped off we do encourage them to get dropped off only a block away and just walk that little bit to school.” She wanted to highlight the impact of walking to school not just on the kids' well-being but also their emotional and social wellbeing. “Exercise isn’t just about getting fit, but it’s also about helping your mind. “Being mindful in what you’re doing and connecting with other people and getting out there in to the community.” Rotary supported the event by putting on a barbecue, as did the Wodonga Council who gave away freebies to the students in support of the healthy habit. Over 55’s... Age and experience counts By Monique Kuzeff OCTOBER saw another successful 60+ Counts high tea at Riverwood that saw many residents join together to celebrate International Day of Older Persons. There were plenty of mouth-watering cakes, muffins, biscuits and slices to go around, generously donated by Commercial Club Albury and the SS&A Club. This year at the 60+ Counts high tea residents were charmed by guest speaker Member for Albury Greg Aplin, whose mother had previously resided at Riverwood herself. Mr Aplin spoke about state-wide strategies to help older people stay healthy and active, the importance of older people in the community, and the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, expected to be rolled out on the Border next year. While older persons are sometimes overlooked for employment, restricted from social services and stereotyped, at Riverwood residents are able to live a comfortable, vibrant, social and active lifestyle. International Day of Older Persons is a world-wide celebration that acknowledges the importance of building a community that is inclusive of people over the age of 60. It’s also a day that raises awareness about issues affecting older persons and to show appreciation for the contributions the elderly make to the community.

Riverwood sales manager Wayne Matsinos said that recently his grandson was playing with his Lego and asked his granddad whether he was too old to play with him, to which he answered: “I will never be too old to play with you.” “That should be everyone’s attitude to ageing,” Mr Matsinos said. He said ageism was an everyday challenge for older persons. “Ageism marginalises and excludes older people in their communities, at the very time of life where enjoyment should be paramount.”

Just a little bit out there Doctor Strange (MA15+) Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton THE world is superhero mad these days and so there seems to be a new “origin story” every week or so. However the latest offering from Marvel, Doctor Strange is like the character himself - just a little out there - and that’s not a bad thing. In the hands of a lesser director and actors this had “just another origin story” written all over it. And yet director Scott Derrickson (known more for writing and directing horror films) brings home an interesting, visually beautiful and well acted piece of film-making which is visually faithful to the original 1960s drawings by the legendary Steve Dittko (look him up, he’s a big deal in the comic world) while changing the origin story just enough to fit it into the bigger Marvel Cinematic World. “Doctor Strange“ follows the story of talented but arrogant neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch with a pretty impressive American accent) who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions before saving the world. It sounds like fairly familiar ground but with Cumberbatch (playing another genius - though not so haunted this time), Tilda Swinton (as the Ancient One - his teacher) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (as Mordo his mentor) it has an amazingly talented and convincing cast who wouldn’t be out of place performing Shakespeare on the West End

Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange. and yet here they are in a Marvel movie. My only criticism is that you never quite get to understand the full motivation behind the baddie of the piece played by Mads Mikkelsen - a line or two more of dialogue is probably all it needed. Favourite part? The music - for all it’s mindblowing visuals it was the trippy, progressive rock theme that really set the scene for me. Boy, something good’s brewing BOY and Bear are coming to the Cube and helping farmers along the way. The popular band head to the Cube on 12 November as part of a tour that will have plenty of surprises and also help out a very special rural charity. The band is collaborating with Akasha Brewing Company and have created a brew called All Australian Ale (AAA), which will be exclusively available at the upcoming shows on Boy and Bear's tour. All proceeds from the beer will go towards the charity Buy a Bale, helping to support rural Australian communities and farmers. Akasha Brewing Company, founded in 2015 by Dave Padden and Wesley White, is renowned for attention to detail, consistency, and passion for all things beer. Using 100 per cent Australian ingredients, Boy and Bear and Akasha have created the “brew for a cause”. Buy a Bale, a division of Rural Aid, provides assistance to rural communities through fodder supplies, hampers, volunteers, tradies, technology, and works with other rural non-profit groups to co-ordinate assistance. In the three years from 2013 to 2016, $3.5 million has been raised to support rural towns through drought and economic hardship. In addition, Parlour Gigs and Wonderlick are giving away the chance to win an all-expensespaid Parlour gig, performed by Boy and Bear themselves. Local Sport Hockey fast and furious By Tania Phillips FRIDAY night saw the final for the Hockey Eights’ Charity Tournament. The finals were the culmination of a month of hockey action. The competition has brought a modified fast and exciting hockey experience to the region as well as raising funds for Albury Wodonga Regional Foodshare and Junior Hockey Development. In its fifth year, Hockey Eights has already raised more than $60,000 for local charities and junior development including ‘Hilltop’ Carers Accommodation and Give Me Five for Kids. The action has been fast and exciting with many of Albury Wodonga's best fighting it out for the rights to the title, including Victorian AHL Viking goal keeper Ben Hooppell. McInerney doubles up at Mitta to Mt Beauty event By Paul Ingwersen ALBURY’S Kathryn McInerney and Murray Spinks of Melbourne took out their second Mitta to Mt Beauty wins on Sunday. Spinks, the former Australian representative, and national mountain bike (MTB) marathon champion, blitzed the field to finish in 1:49:03, more than two minutes ahead of Beechworth’s Matt Clarke who carried his strong Tour of Tasmania form into the race. The event is a 55km point-to-point mountain bike race from Mitta Mitta to Mt Beauty, via Scrubby Creek and Trappers Gap. It covers 37km of dirt, 18km of bitumen, 840 metres of climbing and an exhilarating 740 metres of descending. The beauty of the race is that it offers something for everyone. Former national champions, National Road Series road cyclists, riders hoping for an age category win, and many hoping to better their previous time or just finish. Looking around the start area the choice of equipment reflected the variety of riders and vagaries of the course. With a third of the race on bitumen, the standard mountain bike protocols are put on hold. Local Errol Fleming attached aero bars to his MTB, others debated be-

tween hard tail or dual suspension, weighing up comfort of descending corrugated roads, versus weight and power transmission on the climbs and sealed roads. One rider started with a single speed, and local cycling identity Neil Van Der Ploeg pulled out his 2005 Jamis, Dragon with Reynolds 853 tubing. Probably the only steel framed bike in the event. While some thought it more a museum piece he proved it is an effective ride. Murray Spinks holds the fastest time of 1:45:46, set in 2002, and as the hundred riders rolled out of the Mitta Caravan Park it appeared some had the record in their sights. Earlier in the day there had been some speculation about the etiquette of wearing a skin suit in a MTB race. Van Der Ploeg was kitted out in one and while normally used on the velodrome or in crits, it was not out of place for the first bitumen section. The lead motorbike escorted the bunch through the Mitta streets and onto the Omeo Highway. Matt Clarke, well known for his long and testing motorpace sessions, hugged the motorbike’s wheel and the pace lifted every few hundred metres as if it were a keirin race on the track

Turning left onto Scrubby Creek Road, the motorbike accelerated away and the elite riders attacked each other as if the finish line was just up the road. Some of the weaker riders, whose positioning had found them in the front group left gaps, creating more urgency at the back as a smaller selection formed. The sound of the 250cc engine

was replaced with the whirring of 30 knobbly wheels on asphalt, and the fragrance of rain on fresh dirt overpowered the smell of partly burnt engine oil. Matt Clarke attacked, then Neil Van Der Ploeg, then Matt Clarke, with Charly McMillan having a crack and then Matt Clarke a few more times. The accelerations unhitched one by one another ten riders including all the women except Kathryn McInerney who dug deep, and clung to the wheels. She made the final selection of just under 20 riders as the race hit the dirt. That effort paid dividends as she stayed away from a high quality

women’s field and took first female in 2:07:47 for the second consecutive year. On the climb it was Matt Clarke and Murray Spinks going head to head - a 26 inch wheel versus a 29 inch for the eventual winner. The first downhill proved decisive with the mountain biker out-descending the road racer, and carrying the advantage to the finish. Adrian Jackson, another former national champion, rode solidly to take third in 1:52:11. From the Under 19 riders, Max Heizer claimed first in 1:59:38, and in the 40 km Under 15 race, Jonah Cosgrove won in an impressive 1:46:04. On a sad note, the local cycling scene notes the passing of Laurie Burns, a former pro who rode with the Lavington club, coached locals and assisted with many events. Laurie won some major races, claiming the Nyngan to Dubbo and the Mt Gambier Wheel race. Local cyclists remember him as a man who was generous with his time, a great sense of humour and a top mechanic who worked at various bike shops. His last cycling activity was to watch the club crit last Wednesday night, again supporting a local event. Vale Laurie Burns.
