Cup that stops a town AHEAD of the ‘race that stops the nation’ Emirates Melbourne Cup on 1 November - the iconic Melbourne Cup is touring 34 towns across Australia and New Zealand and Wodonga was lucky enough to be one of them. Wodonga residents got to lay their eyes and hands on the spectacular cup over the weekend when it visited the area on its 14th annual international tour.

On Friday it attended the annual Caulfield Calcutta Cup before making an appearance at a local nursing home, parading down High Street and attending Wodonga Races at the local turf club.

Mosquito flood

By Monique Kuzeff THERE will no doubt be an increased number of mosquitoes as temperatures rise across the Border and surrounding region, according to Charles Sturt University lecturer and entomologist Dr Paul Weston.

With abundant stagnant water lying around in the area due to recent flooding, Dr Weston said as long as the water continued to stay around, mosquitoes would continue to breed more in coming weeks. “Mosquitoes are totally dependent

on water for breeding, they lay their eggs in the water and develop them in the water,� he said. “This summer there will no doubt be additional mosquitoes and we are already seeing that.�

According to Dr Weston, mosquitoes lay their eggs on submerged vegetation in stagnant water including ponds, flood plains and bird baths.

While many people believe that mosquitoes feed on blood, it is only the females that bite, he said. “They are looking for protein to as-

sist in the development of their larvae because for the female to get enough protein it has to take in blood. “That could be from any warm blooded animal as it is attracted to the warmth but also carbon dioxide produced when the animal is breathing, as well as other compounds exuded by the skin.�

While mosquitoes can also act as transmitters of viruses, Dr Weston expected it not be of a major concern in the area even with an increased number of mosquitoes breeding in the area.

“It depends entirely on the native population of animals infected, and obviously if there is an increased number of potential infected, the chances could be higher. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean we are going to get an outbreak. “Viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes because they will feed on one marsupial and other wild animals that may carry that virus in the blood and then inject in into the animal or person they feed on.�

Dr Weston advised people to wear

loose-fitting clothes, avoid going out at dusk and dawn and wear insect repellent when possible to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. “If you are going to be out at dusk or dawn, it’s good to wear an insect repellent and it’s also recommended to wear loose-fitted clothing because they can pierce tight-fitted clothing. “A natural deterrent such as citral which has a citrusy odour that is found in a number of organic insect repellents does a fairly good job in warding off mosquitoes.�

Funding fillip

Cup does its rounds

THE Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) will deliver more programs to the local community in 2017 after it received further funding from the NSW Government.

MAMA will receive $40,000 program funding as part of the Arts and Cultural Development Program (ACDP), Albury MP Greg Aplin announced on Monday.

“The funding being provided will help organisations to deliver innovative arts and cultural programs in the community throughout 2017,” Mr Aplin said.

MAMA will present a multifaceted exhibition and education program, activating all parts of the newly renovated regional arts centre.

Its program will engage and build audiences regionally and beyond through innovative educational approaches and digital technologies.

MINOR flooding is occurring along the Murray River at Corowa and Tocumwal. The Murray River at Echuca peaked near 93.4 metres above sea level on Monday morning, which is slightly below the minor flood level.

The flood peak is now approaching Torrumbarry, where the river was 7.81m and close to its peak Tuesday morning, with major flooding.

Moderate flooding is current along the Murray River at Barham and along the Edward River at Deniliquin, Stevens Weir and Moulamein.

THE Emirates ‘Loving Cup’ made its way in to Wodonga over the weekend as part of its annual Australia and New Zealand tour.

The $175,000 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup has been participating in an international tour for 14 years showcasing its sheer beauty and enabling those connected with it to share their triumphant stories.

On Saturday morning, the 3.2 kilogram cup visited Huon Hill for an iconic photo overlooking Wodonga and its racing ground before visiting Westmont Nursing Home and then parading down High Street.

Cup Tour manager and keep of the Cup Joe McGrath said the Tour was a celebration of the history and culture of the ‘race that stops a nation’.

“The cup has been here since 1861, and is coming in to its 156 consecutive year of running and has been one constant throughout the development of the Australian personality,” Mr McGrath said.

“It’s the people’s cup and the people’s race and people across Australia should have that opportunity to see the trophy that’s connected with Australia’s greatest horse race.”

This year there were 25 personalities on Tour including champion Jockey Jim Cassidy and Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mick Robins, who trained his first winner in his third month as a licensed trainer.

The Tour will travel to 34 towns and cities across the two countries before it returns to Flemington ahead of the iconic race.

Mr McGrath said this year Wodonga was selected to be on of 34 destinations to which the Cup would visit because of its strong application.

A group of biodiversity experts, academics, and organisations met on Thursday to discuss current projects that have been undertaken in the past year to protect threatened species in the region.

It was an opportunity for those who have worked on the projects to share ideas and discuss future priorities and plans.

Some of the projects discussed included community engagement, genetic sampling and population monitoring to nest box placement, species translocation and habitat reconstruction.

DEWLP program manager biodiversity Jane Roots said the meeting was important for organisations including Landcare groups, universities and government organisations to present their project findings.

“Each of the regions put up projects around protecting threatened species, engaging in learning more about such species and doing work around limiting the threats to them,” Ms Roots said.

Ms Roots said “community engagement” was a critical aspect in protecting the species and that simple measures could help limit threats.

“It could be something as simple as the removal of barbed wire because squirrel gliders, bats and a number of other species actually get caught in the wire and die.

“Controlling cats is another thing because they eat a lot of the smaller creatures such as frogs and birds so keeping them inside at night is important.

“We need to be more aware of the impacts we have and instead we find it easier to do the incentives than the disincentives so that’s what we focus on.”

Ms Roots said the DELWP is currently seeking more State Government funding to further assist with future projects.

“We are after whatever we can get for a multi-year funding arrangement,” she said.

“We know that one-off projects don’t work that well because it takes a lot of time to get the community involved, to do the project, to monitor it and to figure out how to do it better.”

INDI MP Cathy McGowan has called on the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) to explain the outflow of water from the Lake Hume catchment after landholders affected by recent flooding brought up concerns about “communication”.

Ms McGowan said there would be a round table meeting held in Wodonga next month between the MDBA and landholders to negotiate what needed to be done for improved communication.

“The land owners came and saw me and said, ‘we’ve got massive problems with communicating, can we sort the communication out because if we had advance notice we could’ve made a whole lot of different decisions’,” Ms McGowan said.

“I had a meeting with members of the Murray River Action Group last week, and they had a list of complaints which I then took to the MDBA. “The MDBA has on its website a live river data section, but it is retrospective and has been criticised by the Murray River Action Group’s president Richard Sargood, who represents the low-lying property owners.”

Ms McGowan said it was important to address the issue now, particularly with the chance that more water could be released from Lake Hume in coming weeks.

“The weir is chocker, and if we get another big event, when the snow starts melting.

“I think it’s really timely, and also it’s going to happen again as we know that there’s going to be wet years ahead of us.

By Monique Kuzeff THE local and iconic Beechworth Bakery was selected as one of 10 small businesses across the country to take part in the new Shop Small campaign which aims to encourage Australians to shop local and support small businesses.

Australia's 2 million small businesses are an integral part of the economy.

In recognising the role small businesses play and their value to Australia, Shop Small, which will be launched on 31 October, will run throughout November to remind consumers to buy local.

Beechworth Bakery managing director Marty Matasonni was joined by bakery founder Tom O’Toole and photographer and cultural archivist Eamon Donnelly on Friday to document the business through photographs.

To Mr Donnelly, who took the photographs of the business, the bakery seemed like a “powerhouse in a tiny town”.

“It quite grand overlooking the main street with such a beautiful street facade and the heritage overlay and that colour palette.”

He said he wanted to capture “every aspect” of the business so people could get a real sense of what it would be like to visit.

“The building, the interior, the staff working, the owner and details of the product they sell and famous pies.

“Then I got behind the counter to take photos from their point of view.”

“It’s pretty awesome, really, and we got on board straight away when we were asked to be involved,” Mr Matasonni said.

“To be selected as one of the businesses is amazing because Australia is a bloody big place.”

Mr Matasonni said the campaign was important for small regional communities because it promoted the area and businesses to tourists.

“Everything we do we are always promoting Beechworth as a town

because it has so much to offer and we have a rich history,” he said.

“We need our local business. If we didn’t have local support for our small businesses we wouldn’t survive because tourists aren’t around all the time.”

Having been operating for 33 years, Beechworth Bakery is perceived by the locals as being an important feature of the historic town in which it was founded.

“It’s a big part of our local community and not just within Beechworth but we are recognised in our

whole region we are a big employer and we have shops spread across Victoria and NSW,” Mr Matasonni said.

Time to step up on rural crime ALBURY MP Greg Aplin is encouraging the local community to report instances of rural crime to the police in light of Rural Crime Week.

Mr Aplin said a key component of tackling crime was ensuring that regional communities got the targeted policing they required through the re-engineering of the NSW Police Force and the introduction of a Regional Deputy Commissioner.

“The introduction of a deputy commissioner for Regional NSW will mean that the emerging crime trends in regional NSW, which differ so much to those in our cities, are recognised and properly addressed,” Mr Aplin said.

“There is no doubt that some of the kinds of crime we see in this region are not seen in the city.

“This Rural Crime Week, local residents should know that the NSW Government is working closely with the NSW Police Force to adequately respond to rural crime, not just through the introduction of a Regional Deputy Commissioner, but also through the recommendations of the Bradshaw Review into rural crime.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Gran said rural crime, including theft of livestock, produce and equipment, illegal shooting and trespassing costs communities millions of dollars each year and has significant impacts on the livelihood of farmers.

“The NSW Government is taking practical steps to reduce rates of rural crime, and Rural Crime Week serves as a timely reminder to people across regional NSW that all crimes in the bush should be reported to police,” he said.

“Even the smallest piece of information can help.”

Centre on point

By Monique Kuzeff STAGE one of the longawaited Children’s Centre development at Wodonga West Primary School is officially complete with staff and students having recently moved in to their new open learning spaces.

The $4.5 million development provides staff, students and parents with a range of allied health services and an early learning centre with a pre-school for three and fouryear-olds, offering a “birth to 12 year old” learning approach.

The open learning spaces have been embellished with multi-purpose room dividers, architecturally designed on casters and a range of timber furniture and equipment.

Wodonga West Primary School principal Jocelyn Owen is still “pinching” herself after staff moved in to the new development two weeks ago.

“It’s just so uplifting coming in to work every day,” she said.

“During my entire career so far I’ve never had the pleasure of working in a brand new school, even though I’ve been teaching for close to 40 years and this is just so beautifully designed.

“It’s so bright, airy, fresh and modern and everyone is feeling very valued having such a beautiful space to work and learn in.”

spacious and vibrant learning areas for all grades.

“It brings the whole school together, even the classrooms

are so much nicer now than what we had before,” Ms Shepherdson said.

“They are not closed in and are a lot more open planned which makes it more inclusive for everyone.”

Tammi Price, mum to Foundation student Macey, believes that the new complex makes it much easier for families who have a number of young children to be in the one spot.

“If you have other kids in various grades, you can drop them off to kinder and to school in the same place.

“It’s great with all the windows, colour and funky little nooks,” she said.

“My kids are very outdoorsy so to have the gardens and big play spaces it’s just a perfect environment for them.”

Stage two of the project is currently underway with demolition occurring to the old existing building that runs parallel to Lawrence Street.

With an extra $30,000 for a ‘mass garden concept’, Ms Owen said once the demolition was finished the area would be landscaped and a new playground established.

“Our art room will also be refurbished which will have an outdoor pottery kiln and space with shelving for the clay to dry.

“A huge sign will also go up at the front and general gardening and landscaping will be done to beautify the area.”

VicRoads is talking safety

By Monique Kuzeff THE community will remain in conversation with VicRoads regarding road safety improvements on the section of road between Beechworth and Yackandandah Road.

The community has made over 30 submissions to VicRoads on the is-

sue since they were asked to provide feedback on the safety in July for the Beechworth-Wodonga Road Safety Infrastructure Project.

VicRoads Regional director Ms Nicki Kyriakou said the response from the community was “fantastic” with some of the suggestions included shoulder sealing, overtaking lanes, and

reducing speed in various locations.

She said that VicRoads would like to continue the conversation with the community, and staff would be visiting Beechworth and Yackandandah this coming Friday 21 October.

“We appreciate the community’s involvement in this project. This section of road has a crash history that puts too

many people at risk,” she said.

The visits will give community members the opportunity to share their thoughts and talk with VicRoads staff about the best solutions to keep all road users safe on this road.

“Every person had a role to play in road safety, and working with the community and stakeholders on this proj-

ect will contribute to its success,” Ms Kyriakou said.

VicRoads staff will be available on Friday 21 October at 10am to 12.30pm at Yackandandah Bakery, 20 High Street, Yackandandah, and 2pm to 4.30pm at Beechworth Bakery, 27 Camp Street, Beechworth.

Industry exposure for solar wheels

By Monique Kuzeff STUDENTS across the region got together for the Wilson Transformers Solar Car Challenge practice day to test their cars ahead of the big race in Wodonga on 28 October.

It was all happening outside of MAMA on Friday where a practice course was set-up in QEII Square where students from nine of 13 participating schools launched their new wheels for the first time.

NELLEN structured workplace learning co-ordinator Angela Pesavento said the practice day gave the students the opportunity to see how their solar car might perform on race day.

“It’s all about practising, tweaking their cars, sharing some information with each other and seeing how their car might perform on the day,” Ms Pesavento said.

“It’s interesting that while each team built their own solar car with expert assistance of local industry mentors, the students have decided whether it’ll be heavy or light for ex-

ample - each solar car is unique to its own team.”

Wilson Transformers provided the material and a guide to assist them with building the cars which have been the result of five months’ work for the students, Ms Pesavento said.

“Our local businesses donate their time to each of the schools and then the schools and their industry mentor work from May to October on building the solar car.

“The main purpose of the whole program is the alignment between industries and schools.

“It helps create those pathways for students to be able to access, transition and make decisions about their vocations post-secondary school and provide them with the awareness of local businesses and industries available to them as well.”

Initiated in 2003, the Solar Car Challenge was designed as a practical way of building student awareness about and interest in the local manufacturing industry.

“It’s been really fun, and I reckon they should definitely continue doing it in years’ time,” Thomas said.

“Our team didn’t have a very good

car to start with because the steering was probably not the sharpest of steering, but now it’s getting there.

“Through this, I’ve learnt teamwork and how to make things better and I think this experience will help some of my friends because they want to be

tradies and what not.”

The Wilson Transformers Solar Car Challenge race day will be held between 11am to 11.30am on 28 October at Transformers Park, 19 Maloney Drive, Wodonga, for anyone interested in attending.

Buskers raise cash

By Larissa Kuzeff CROWDS gathered to see local music talent busk their way to a breakthrough at La Trobe University Albury Wodonga campus in early October to raise funds to fight domestic violence.

Local music artists took to the stage and put their voices to the important cause aimed at creating awareness of domestic violence in the local community.

This year’s artists were ready to showcase their talent which included “outstanding” performances from Northern Folk, Myself Tonight and KC Irony.

The event raised a total of $816 with all funds going to the Centre Against Violence which offers a large range of services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims across the Border and North East Victoria.

The $700 in funds raised from last year’s Busking for a Breakthrough event was directed to HeadSpace to assist with mental health issues in the community.

family event including face painting and an animal farm and a whole range of delightful food options including paella, a barbecue, fairy floss and slushies.

Busking for a Breakthrough organiser Erin McCallum said it was good to see such a large turnout of children at the weekend event and added it was important to raise awareness for domestic violence which had been widely reported this year and had a major impact on the community.

“It was fantastic to see the amount of children who came along and got involved - I was painting faces on the day - my first time doing face painting and they all loved it,” Ms McCallum said.

“I think the community can become a little bit blind to it, but they pass it every day and don’t see it as much - that’s what humans do it’s a natural thing,” Ms McCallum said.

“It’s important we think about how it’s affecting others in the community because it’s not exclusive - it can happen to anyone,” she said.

Good advice from guiding hand

By Monique Kuzeff ONE in four people with vision loss wait more than 10 years before seeking assistance which in turn increases their risk of trips, falls, isolation and depression.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT launched a new campaign ‘Don’t Delay, Seek Help Today’ last week in celebration of International White Cane Day with the help of vision-impaired Albury resident Adam Smith.

The campaign aims to encourage people who are experiencing issues with their vision to seek assistance from Guide Dogs earlier rather than later.

When a head injury caused Adam to lose his sight some 12 years ago, he began living each day dependent on his friends and family.

He felt he had to build his life again having had to re-learn certain things such as shaving and eating.

One day Adam decided to pick up his long cane that was left untouched for six years while he had been enduring declining vision.

While at the hospital Adam had been given the long cane so that he could learn how to navigate his surroundings safely.

“As soon as I got home from hospital I threw it away. The big thing for me was the stigma attached to having it - I didn’t want to admit I was blind,” Adam said.

“If I had sought help sooner it would have helped me out a lot.”

Today, Adam is encouraging those experiencing issues with their vision to “come to terms with their vision loss” and “seek help”.

“Some 26 per cent waited more than 10 years before seeking help from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

“They’re isolated, depressed or anxious because when they first get that diagnosis many go through a lot of grief.”

He said each year Guide Dogs NSW/ACT identifies issues faced by its clients and aims to educate the community on the findings.

“The community is very supportive of us and all the services we provide and once we identify a new issue experience by our clients we want the public to know.

“That’s why each year we run these campaigns to help the public become more educated about the vision impaired.”

THE history of a small country town hall located down a road between Chiltern and Howlong is one that hasn’t been voiced for a while.

In light of the hall once used as an accommodation for Bonegilla migrants before being transported to Gooramadda in the late '60s, the Gooramadda Hall committee has welcomed a new monthly social to the scene.

Summer Sundays Tea Dance will commence from Sunday 20 November from 2pm to 5pm offering the local community and dancers the opportunity to get back in to the swing of the old school social times.

It will host the event every third Sunday of each month, running on into the New Year until the warm evenings begin to grow tired.

The unique thing about the event is that it will once again breathe life into a hall that was once the centre piece to the small community that surrounds it.

Gooramadda Hall committee member Graeme Fisher said that over the years the hall had been kept in good condition and it was good to see the floor refurbished for keen dancers next month.

A recent study ‘Has the graduate job market been swamped’ released by the National Institute of Labour Studies showed job opportunities for graduates decreasing which prompted the push.

“We know that graduate employment numbers have been steadily declining since 2009,

so the question now is what do those graduates have the others don’t?” Ms Hayes said.

She said CDAA members who work with university students have identified that graduates who start gaining experience while studying seem more likely to get jobs.

“This experience could include work on real-life projects, as well as internships and placements, or part-time work to demonstrate an ability to take direction and work as a team.

“Involvement in extracurricular activities also helps to show your interests beyond study and an ability to create work life balance.”

Posture backed up with exercise IT IS estimated that one in six Australians (3.7 million) had chronic back problems in 2014-15, according to an August 2016 report released by the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW).

Walking is a low impact exercise that assists in improving flexibility and mobility.

Accompanied by a regimen of stretching, walking can improve flexibility and develop a better range of motion.

Walking strengthens the body and helps position the spine in its upright natural shape and causes walkers to naturally adopt proper posture.

Stretching can improve mobility and provide a better range of motion.

Heads up for good mental health SOMETIMES for people acknowledging that they need help and reaching out is the hardest part but on Headspace Day young Australians around the country are being reminded that mental health is important and help is always available.

National Headspace Day is on 11 October –- a national day of awareness aimed at ensuring that every young Australian knows how to get help for mental health issues if they need it, regardless of where they live.

Minister for Health Sussan Ley said intervention at the early stages of a mental illness can reduce its duration and impact.

“Approximately one-in-four young people aged between 16-24 years may experience a mental illness at some

point in their young lives,” Ms Ley said.

“Our job is to ensure that young people know that help and support is available.

“Headspace has been a vital part of the Australian Government’s preventative health services for the last 10 years, providing teenagers and young adults with affordable, youth-friendly mental health services through the Headspace network.

“During that time, Headspace and the free confidential online and phone service eheadspace have provided support and advice to more than 260,000 young people.

“This annual day provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of the

importance of early intervention in our mental health, and I congratulate headspace for its new initiative.”

To mark National headspace Day, Australians were encouraged to wear an ‘access all areas’ wristband and show their support on social media, using the hashtag #headspace.

Headspace centres across the country will also be hosting community events and open days.

Headspace, as well as providing mental health services, also offers a range of additional advice and support services to young people on physical health, work and study support, and alcohol and substance abuse.

“The Australian Government, during the recent election campaign, com-

mitted to investing $20 million for an additional 10 Headspace centres with the aim to increase services in rural and regional areas,” Ms Ley said.

This continued investment will bring the total number of Headspace centres to 110 around the country by 2019.

Guards’ drums warm up CAPTAIN Alexander Stewart is enjoying the warm weather in Australia - hardly surprising for someone from Scotland.

However while he’s doing a little sight-seeing, his first trip to Australia is a bit of a busman’s holiday.

Captain Stewart is the host of the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards tour around Australia.

Direct from Edinburgh, Scotland, the world famous Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is touring Australia throughout October and November.

The star military band, as featured on the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, started its tour in Queensland and will play at the Albury Entertainment Centre on 26 November - one of its last dates on the tour.

Captain Stewart said the concert includes 25 musicians, dancers and singers in full ceremonial uniform live on-stage.

“It’s a lot warmer than in Scotland,” Captain Stewart said from the venue in Brisbane.

In the background there were the sounds of pipes coming through faintly - not that Captain Stewart will be playing.

“I was actually a piper at school,” he said and admitted that he wasn’t very good.

Instead he joined the regiment

almost four years ago and was asked if he would be like to be part of the band.

Like all the other band members he is a soldier first but said he loves travelling the world as part of the group.

It’s a big tour - 26 on the road, including one woman vocalist from New Zealand, for two months - 42 venues and 50 shows.

The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has achieved some major success in the music industry.

In 1972 it garnered number one in the music charts for five weeks with Amazing Grace selling more than 7 million copies worldwide.

This was followed by major hits such as The Last of The Mohicans, Highland Cathedral, Dances With Wolves, Soldier, Soldier, The Braveheart Trilogy and Going Home as recorded with songwriter/guitarist Mark Knopfler.

Every year the band is featured in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which is televised worldwide to 45 million people, and is constantly in demand for international competitions, concerts and parades.

The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is playing at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Saturday 26 November.

Skewed view from train The Girl on the Train (MA15+) Starring: Emily Blunt, Justin Thoreaux DAYS after seeing this film, I still don’t know what to make of it.

It’s a mystery, wrapped in a riddle, covered in secret sauce.

First things first: Emily Blunt is brilliant, with another world-beating performance.

Her character is a scorned woman, a hopeless alcoholic who peers at the life she used to have through the window of a train she idly rides each day.

Her former husband is there with a new wife and a new baby, while Blunt’s character blearily sips vodka from a water bottle.

She’s a bitter harridan, a drunken shrew who drove her husband away.

Or is she?

And did she witness a murder … or did she do it?

Much of this film centres around perspective, and the lead character’s battle with the bottle colours our view of her, and her reliability as a witness.

Justin Thoreaux is great as

the ex-husband, as are the other central female characters - the new wife, a nanny, and a hardbitten detective.

It’s hard to escape the thought that this film was written with a female audience in mind. To say more would involve plot spoilers I simply cannot divulge.

It will take you somewhere else. You will love it and you will hate it.

And I still don’t know what to think.

Dusty and Stapleton

Wendy Stapleton stars as Dusty Springfield.

WENDY Stapleton is has had a long and impressive career and so has Britain’s Dusty Springfield.

Both have distinctive voices and big personalities so it almost seems like a natural progression that Stapleton would be drawn to the music of Springfield - considered Britain’s great female popstar.

Stapleton will bring her show The Dusty Springfield Story to The Cube today (Wednesday).

The show is a tribute to the songs and career of the amazing Dusty Springfield.

Born in West Hampstead, Springfield learned to sing at home.

In 1958 she joined her first professional group, The Lana Sisters, and two years later formed a pop-folk vocal trio, The Springfields, with her brother Tom. Her solo career began in 1963 with the upbeat pop hit I Only Want to Be With You. Among the hits that fol-

lowed were Wishin’ and Hopin’ (1964), I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself (1964), You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me (1966), and Son of a Preacher Man (1968).

Trained as a youngster in classical ballet, tap, acting and singing, Stapleton made her first professional appearance at the age of nine at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Noel Coward’s Sail Away.

She then performed regularly with J. C. Williamson’s for many years combining this with weekly performances on GTV9’s Tarax Show.

At 16 she became a professional vocalist and has performed with the best of Australian talent among them John Farnham, Glen Shorrock, Jon English and Joe Camilleri.

In 1979 she signed with Mushroom Records and formed Wendy and the Rocketts, touring Australia and overseas with acts including Brian Adams, Z.Z.

Top, and Hall and Oates.

Her self-penned single Play the Game went to number two on the national charts.

Her singing career has also embraced theatre performances such as Bad Boy Johnny, The Magic Show, The Sentimental Bloke, What’s Goin’ On, I Only Wanna Be With You - The Dusty Springfield Story, both here and in the UK. Two Up with Glen Shorrock, Dusty Doris and Me and Screen Gems with Dean Lotherington; the title role of the singing voice of Li’ll Elvis in the ABC cartoon of the same title and the acclaimed all girl show Girls Girls Girls starring Wendy, Debra Byrne and Nikki Nicholls.

Local Sport Summer track and crits

By Paul Ingwersen SUMMER cycling in Australia is traditionally track and criteriums (known as crits) with many of the longer road races left for the cooler months.

The Albury Wodonga Panthers Cycling Club have a smorgasbord of racing organised this summer for both new, and accomplished riders keen to sit above their threshold and test their maximum heart rate.

Motorsports Training Australia have generously allowed the cycling club access to their training facility near the Barnawartha Logic centre, providing a 1.6 km, closed, hot mix circuit, and the fundamentals for great crit racing.

one of the summer series, and the combined A and B grade mixed raw strength, masters aged cunning and a few riders learning how to keep maximum speed on a curvy circuit for 35 minutes.

Lachlan Hutchins took out the A grade, outsprinting the evergreen Greg Featonby, and Craig McMillan who showed yet again he knows how to hurt at the critical point of a race.

The strong sprinters almost missed the win, with Under 23 rider, Charly McMillan taking a flier with a few laps to go. Lachlan Hutchins went with him, but either couldn’t hold the wheel or astutely decided to save his energy for the sprint and dropped back to the bunch. It was the young McMillan time trialling against the bunch for

more than 4km, and the question was who would pick up the chase.

The experienced Simon Ross sacrificed his chances, moving to the front, and managed to just bring Charly McMillan back, with only hundreds of metres to the finish line. Around the final corner, brute strength and cornering experience saw the top three glide clear of the field and take the podium places.

In the C grade It was Justin Godfrey in top spot, followed by Sam Dutton with under -19 rider Tom Sharp third, in his first crit race, giving everyone something to think about as it won’t be long before he is pushing the limits in the upper grades.

Special mention in A grade to Maddie Wright who lined up, just days

before competing in the 277km Melbourne to Warrnambool. On a circuit too flat for her strengths, she made a few attacks and showed the crowd how to ride a crit.

With racing scheduled fortnightly and the next event on Wednesday 26 October, new riders are welcome to try a race. Day licences available and training for juniors and newcomers on how to ride a crit from 5.30 pm.

Track racing at the Lavington velodrome starts at 5.30 pm on Monday 7 November with juniors and new riders welcome. The track has been the starting ground for the successful careers of local riders like Melbourne to Warrnambool winner Rhys Pollock, Dave McPartland, Jess Featonby and Olympic gold medallist Scott McGory.

The club will provide access to track bikes to try it out. The nights are open to young ones aged eight to 18 that would like to try cycling as a sport and is definitely suited to youngsters who feel they don’t fit in with team sports. Turn up with a helmet, sleeved shirt (no singlets) and sports shorts to start with. Everything else the club can assist with. If you have your own cycling shoes and pedals feel free to bring them.

The first weeks will be introduction nights fitting bikes, teaching track skills, then progressing to learning to ride in a group. Advanced riders can join in the racing after taking out a licence. For more information, contact Greg Featonby on 0439 694 732, or www.awpcc.com.

Fields of glory THE hockey eights competition is well under way now at the Albury Hockey Centre.

The three-week competition involves eight teams of eight players all sponsored by local businesses battling it out in a roundrobin event.

United asks NPL hopefuls to step up MURRAY United Football Club’s newly-appointed technical director Nick Mammone wants to see as many Border soccer players as possible at next month’s trials as he looks to build on the club’s rise in the National Premier League.

In only its second year in the elite competition, the club’s sides improved three spots on average from their inaugural season across all age divisions.

Mammone said Murray United was the only regional club to improve and the second biggest improver across the entire competition.

He said there was no downside to trialling.

“The trials start in a little less than a month and from my perspective I want to see every player in the region who would like to test themselves at NPL level and beyond,” he said.

“I’m coming to Murray United with a fresh set of eyes and no preconceptions.

“The trials over four weeks, which have been scaled back from last year after some feedback, will include simulated games and sessions where we can gauge technical skills.

“There is no downside to trial-

ling - it is a chance to identify players who are ready for NPL and those that are on the fringe, who may need another year but are clearly on the path to playing at a higher level.”

Mammone said changes to next year’s draw that will greatly reduce the number of away games was “a huge bonus”.

“I know from personal experience that travelling to Melbourne every second week and sometimes in consecutive weekends is a real challenge for regional clubs,” he said.

“So to play two-thirds of our games at home next year, only travel to Melbourne nine times is a major coup.

“Part of the attraction at Murray United was the strength of the club on and off the field.

“They have been able to lobby FFV to get these changes, have great respect from the federation and long established clubs, have developed community football clinics and not only look to compete at this level but are looking to be one of the competition leaders.”
