EAST Warburton’s mobile base station won’t be constructed until 2018, leaving residents without mobile phone coverage through two coming bushfire seasons.

Dixons Creek, Steels Creek and surrounds will have coverage by the end of the year, with the tower’s switch-on date delayed until the final quarter of the year.

Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child raised the matter of the towers at the end of a council meeting on Tuesday, 11 October and said he was concerned about phone coverage during a catastrophic event.

Cr Child said that NBN services connected to the Warburton area meant that phone lines on connected properties would not work if the internet was not working, such as in a power outage.

For areas in East Warburton, where no mobile phone coverage exists, this would mean properties without power would also not be able to phone for help in the case of a fire, or receive warnings except for those coming over the radio.

“We have storms that can isolate us and we have bushfires that can isolate us,” he said.

“We have to have the digital platform out there, so people can receive the warnings.”

The Mail reported earlier in the year that the East Warburton base station was scheduled for construction in 2017, while the Dixons Creek tower would be switched on in the third quarter of 2016.

The Telstra rollout map now cites the East Warburton base station as scheduled for construction in 2018, and the Dixons Creek tower is expected to be switched on sometime in the last quarter of 2016.

Cr Child said another phone tower, this one based in Millgrove, had been approved by council in January 2015 and was scheduled to be running at the end of October, but had yet to be constructed.

“When you think of it, East Warburton and Millgrove are critical for our digital platform."

He said a worst-case scenario in the fire season would be a fire travelling from Healesville through Don Valley to Launching Place, then heading through to Warburton with a wind change.

“That’s what happened in 1939. It’s primed to happen again (and) our com-

munity has to be prepared,” Cr Child said.

Asked why the tower construction was delayed, a Telstra spokesperson said “many factors” affected the rollout, which was run under the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program.

“The logistics of deploying construction parties and delivering materials across regional Australia, and specifics around each site, such as obtaining land access approvals, and the presence and proximity of existing infrastructure including road access, power and transmission, all have an impact on the timing of the roll-out and the dates by when individual sites can be completed,” the spokesperson said.

“Significant work occurs behind the scenes, including design planning, community consultations, the formulation and development of planning applications and working with local councils to get the best outcome for everybody.”

During the last bushfire season, Telstra provided a ‘cell on wheels’ portable mobile phone tower to the East Warburton area, to temporarily address the area’s black spot during high fire danger days.

When asked if Telstra would deploy the portable tower in the coming two bushfire seasons, the spokesperson said they would be used “when needed”.

“In the event of an outage of our infrastructure, we consider a number of factors, such as the impact to the community and the time to restore, in determining the appropriate response,” they said.

NBNCo’s Victorian Corporate Affairs Manager Michael Moore said that in an emergency, telecommunications were likely to not work, even if the NBN stayed connected.

“Where the NBN is affected, NBN will prioritise reconnecting essential services, such as hospitals, fire, police, emergency services as well as community infrastructure such as traffic management, sewerage, power and water utilities,” he said.

“While battery back-up is available, it does not guarantee service availability during a power outage.”

Mr Moore said people who may be affected by the loss of telecommunication services during an outage, “particularly those with medical alarms, fire alarms or lift emergency phones”, to visit www. nbnco.com.au for information on preparing for emergencies and outages.

PRIMARY school students across the country are busy practicing for the Music: Count Us In initiative.

Created in 2006 by Music Australia, the Count Us In initiative is celebrating its 10th year and is Australia’s biggest schools program.

The program encourages young people to become passionate about music and music education and has students from across the country singing the same song, on the same day.

Last year over half a million students from over 2100 schools joined the program to be a part of a united ensemble.

One of the many schools taking part in the initiative will be the Yarra Valleys own Yering Primary School.

The school has been involved with the initiative since its inception and in past years

percussion instruments and actions have been included in to accompany the singing.

Yering Primary School will come together as a whole to sing this year’s song ‘Let It Play’; a song which the students say is their favourite and demonstrates the importance of music.

“When I listen to music or play it, it feels like a different place to me, it’s somewhere where I can be myself,” said student Shannyn.

All the students involved are excited to be part of the Count Us In program and have been enthusiastically practicing in preparation for celebration day on 3 November, music teacher Deanna Cole said.

“It’s a fantastic program which is done for the kids by the kids, they write the songs, they sing the song and then they also play it,” Ms Cole said.

“We really enjoy being a part

of it, and the students love it,” Each year students from all across the country are chosen to write next year’s song, this year’s ‘Let it play’ was written by four student songwriters Stella Kelly, Tom Meadows, Bonnie Staude and Breanna Truscott.

Working directly with schools and teachers, Music: Count Us In exists to assist teachers in providing quality music education and to address the gap in specialist music education provision in many Australian schools.

Students from all across Australia will be singing their hearts out in November and the students at Yering Primary School will be among them.

Although celebration day is just around the corner, schools can still lend their voices to the call for quality music education by registering for free at the Music Australia website.

MILLWARRA Primary School students were excited to be involved in a day full of platypus education.

Belgrave-based Platypus Education Group attended the school on Wednesday 12 October, and students from both East Warburton and Millwarra were given the chance to meet a giant platypus, learn about conservation and other activities.

The school's Millgrove campus co-ordinator Ros Walters said the day was a great success.

“It was a wonderful day,” Ms Walters said. “The kids played games, there was a stuffed platypus, they made posters and a collage.

“They loved it- it was great for the students to learn about conservation.”

As part of the platypus day, Platypus Education Group encouraged Millwarra Primary School to participate in Spot it-Snip it-Bin it, an elastic band challenge.

The challenge involves students collecting as many elastic bands, plastic rings and loom bands. It encourages students to snip the bands before binning them, to avoid them entering waterways and harming platypus’.

School’s four award areas

By Jesse Graham BADGER Creek Primary School is poised to sweep an awards night next month, receiving four nominations for the 2016 ResourceSmart School Awards.

The awards, which are organised

by Sustainability Victoria, recognise work by schools, early childhood services, students and teachers to reduce their environmental impact.

The school is a finalist in the Water School of the Year, Biodiversity School of the Year, Community Leadership School of the Year and ResourceSmart School of the Year categories.

Principal Scott Crawford said he was “extremely excited” about the nominations, and said that sustainability and environmental awareness were a focus at the school.

“It’s great recognition for the hard work and focus we’ve put on sustainability over the last few years,” he said.

He paid tribute to sustainability teacher Erin Murphy who oversees much of the sustainability program, including a project where Healesville High School VCAL students constructed a hen house for the school.

VCAL co-ordinator Gabby Plunkett said the students had constructed a vegie patch at the school last year, and that this was “the next step” in a long-term partnership between the schools.

She said the VCAL and primary school students drew up designs for the hen house and then collaborated with each other, before the final

construction began.

The project was also a task for the VCAL students, who are required to undertake a community project and prove that the need for the project exists.

“That was their need – they wanted the house and we needed to do a community project,” Ms Plunkett said.

“It was a nice marriage, a nice pairing ... for the whole community, it’s just a great project.

“I think this is one of the better projects and it just worked really well – and it happened, as opposed to just talking about it.”

Healesville High School teachers Aidan Hogg and Nic Skewes also oversaw the project, with 14 students taking part.

The hen house is listed as part of the school’s citation for the Community Leadership award.

Mr Crawford said he would be attending the awards ceremony on 11 November at the Melbourne Museum, and hoped the school would come away successful.

“If we could come home with one, that’d be great,” he said.

For those wanting to take action in sustainability in their area, Mr Crawford said that acting locally was key, as was bringing about small changes.

“The Wipe for Wildlife campaign is one thing, so changing to recycled toilet paper – and from there, big things can grow out of it,” he said.

Birthday goes down in history HEALESVILLE Primary School families and students past and present will be able to see the history of their alma mater on Saturday, 22 October, with the school celebrating its 150th birthday.

The day will see a fair running throughout the school, with rides, stalls, historical displays and performances from students, marking 150 years since the school began.

Assistant Principal Barbara Darling said that preparations for the day had been going all year, and that the day would feature attractions for kids and parents alike.

“We’ve got Devonshire tea, we’ve got a barbecue, we’ve got plants and cake stalls ... raffles, and a silent auction; we’ve got craft activities for the kids, all sorts of stalls and things,” she said.

Rides on the day will include a Cup and Saucer, a Chair-o-Plane, a Circotron, Iron Man and The Edge, and school students will present musical performances around the school grounds.

Photographs and stories from the school’s history will also be presented, documenting the different faces – and buildings – that have come through the school since 1866.

Principal Cameron Heath told the Mail earlier in the year that the day would be a carnival for those who had a history with the school and those after a fun day out.

“It’ll be like a big carnival feel, the majority based around that heritage, and the performances from each class,” he said.

Ms Darling said a reunion dinner would also be held on the Saturday evening, and that anyone after more information should call the school on 5962 4053.

Thief stopped in tracks POLICE are searching for witnesses after an attempted burglary at Tokar Estate Winery in Coldstream over the weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Acting Sergeant Rod Newbery said the burglar entered the Maddens Lane property about 9.30pm on Saturday 15 October.

He said the occupants of the property were home at the time, and disturbed the would-be thief, who then fled in a white four-wheel-drive towards Healesville.

Anyone who witnessed someone acting suspiciously in the area at the time, or who has more information, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

On Friday 14 October, police recovered bone china cups and saucers and a print of Rembrandt’s The Polish Rider.

HERE in our local community, we respect and revere our CFA volunteers who give of their time and risk their lives for us.

That’s why when the State Labor Government chose to back the United Firefighters Union’s hostile takeover of the CFA and sack its own Emergency Services Minister and the entire Board of the CFA, our community was aghast.

When this reached crisis point during the recent federal election campaign, we in the Federal Coalition pledged we would act to protect the CFA. The week before the resumption of parliament, I was pleased to take the Prime Minister and the Minister for Employment to the Coldstream CFA to meet with volunteer firefighters from right across our local Casey electorate.

Here, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Employment Minister Michaelia Cash met the people who not only fight the fires, attend the car accidents and help clean up after a storm, but also support so many other volunteer and fund-raising efforts at school fetes and community events.

They heard from the local volunteers who know the fire dangers in our community and how to respond to them better than anyone.

And they heard why the Andrews Government’s union takeover would sideline them and threaten the very future of the CFA. The Prime Minister released the draft legislation to protect the CFA, and announced it would be introduced into the House of Representatives in the very first week.

It passed the House of Representatives after a vigorous debate.

And on Monday night this week it passed the senate, and became law on Thursday.

But it only passed thanks to the support of independents Bob Day and David Leyonhjelm and minor parties, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, the Nick Xenophon Team and Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, who all supported the government to pass this important new law.

Labor senators voted against the legislation, and in doing so voted against our CFA volunteers.

In choosing between caving in to the Andrews Government and the United Firefighters Union or standing up for our firefighting volunteers, Federal Labor abandoned the CFA volunteers in the parliament.

Now the legislation has passed, the United Firefighters Union can no longer bully the CFA into handing the union control of the management of its volunteers, and volunteers will always have a voice if it tries.

These are historic changes that will protect our firefighting volunteers and the vital work they perform.

By Jodie Symonds A TEAM of mules and horses has assisted VicForests in a replanting operation in Marysville’s Acheron Forest.

To accompany VicForests’ contractors, Timberwolf, the equine team was engaged to help carry the thousands of seedlings required to regrow an area of forest that had recently been harvested for timber earlier this year.

With the help of mules and horses, VicForests were able to access hard-to-reach areas that had previously been inaccessible, due to heavy rainfall and steep terrain. VicForests general manager, Planning, Nathan Trushell, said the replanting operation had been a great success, thanks to the help of the pack mules.

“We generally regrow more than 1000 hectares every year in the North East of Victoria,” Mr Trushell said.

“Some of these areas can be very challenging to access, particularly following a wetter-than-normal winter.”

The equine team was accompanied by their owners, Joanne and John Kasch, to help with the operation.

“They are not only trained and skilled in carrying heavy loads and navigating difficult terrain, but they are also a much more environmentally friendly option,” Mrs Kasch said.

Storm to end all storms IT WAS the biggest storm to hit the valley in years, and clean-up efforts continued through most of the week after winds of up to 120km/h hit the region on 9 October.

The storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of properties in the Yarra Ranges, with winds toppling trees onto houses and powerlines through the Sunday.

But many residents were left without power for days, with some set to be re-connected by 5pm on Friday, 14 October.

An AusNet Services release on 13 October said that, as of 4.30pm on Thursday, 2200 properties were still without power, with most of these being based in the Dandenong Ranges and Upper Yarra Valley. “By this evening we expect this number to fall below 1000,� the release read. “It remains difficult to provide accurate forecasts of when individual customers will have their electricity supply restored.�

The release said that more than 250 lineworkers had been in the field each day since the storms, though some faults were harder to repair with trees having fallen across small roads and bush tracks.

As of 1.50pm on Friday, 915 properties remained without power.On Monday, 10 October, corporate relations representative Hugo Armstrong said that the Valley and Dandenongs were the worst-affected regions by the storm.

Healesville SES spokesperson, Maria Lastra, said the unit had 90 callouts over Sunday 9 and Monday 10 October, for trees blocking roads and driveways and damaging properties.

Controller, Geoff Stott, said one incident saw a tree fall across two houses’ roofs, and many roads were blocked off, including the Maroondah Highway through the Black Spur, which re-opened on Monday evening. “You sort of get one of these (storms), probably every about four, maybe five years,� he said. “It’s not unknown, but we don’t get it every year, thank goodness.�

Ms Lastra and Mr Stott urged residents to stay well clear of fallen powerlines, and to always treat them as if they were live with electricity, even if the power company has switched them off. “I was at a job where powerlines were on the floor and a lot of people walked right up to it to have a look,�

Ms Lastra said.

She said that residents should also be aware of animals on their property that may be frightened or injured, or could possibly escape, and to put dogs or pets inside during stormy weather and when emergency services are on the property.

Mr Stott said that, as with bushfires, if a major storm was forecast and trees had the possibility of falling on a house, it was best to leave early. “If they’ve got threatening trees, particularly if you’ve got kids in the house, the best thing is to get down to Eastland and do a bit of shopping or go see some friends in a safe area - just leave and go,� he said. “You can’t stop a tree from falling over - just get out of the area.�

Mr Stott said the unit was supported by the CFA, including Badger Creek CFA, during the storm clean-up.

Letters WHILE we cannot criticise anyone for extraordinary weather, we have had 40plus outages this year.

This means no communication outside many areas of this side of the Yarra Valley; no radio without internet, or no phone and no mobile coverage.

Perhaps the Victorian Government, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and AusNet could use common sense and develop a plan to systematically remove trees from near powerlines, homes and single-access roads.

Maybe the council applicants could focus on a permanent fix to radio coverage, not just during fire season and the same for a tower for mobile coverage and not just a temporary summer one which did nothing for those not living close to it.

Tree removal could create jobs.

The timber and mulch could be sold to pay for the tree removals.

I don’t think that any of us want to denude the valley of trees, but people’s safety and a reliable power source isn’t asking a great deal when we are all paying much higher accounts to fix the problems.

Over the past few years, the service has been worse, not better.

Power struggle THE power outages caused by breezes and mild showers seem to be accepted as facts of life at Healesville.

Let’s say it straight: the outages are the result of poor preventative activity!

Trees close to the powerlines need to be regularly pruned, especially those trees that are obvious to fall during the next gust of wind.

In the long run, and in the interest of power outages (and bushfires) reduction, trees along powerlines should be replaced by non-falling and fire-resisting varieties.

The trees along powerlines must be selected so that they do not grow taller than the powerlines.

As to the showers, well, find where

the water is getting inside your equipment and plug it!

Banging the appropriate heads together should be your first priority, Fiona, after you are (hopefully) re-elected.

Sound best medicine AS A community member on the Healesville Hospital Redevelopment Liaison Group, I was delighted to MC the Australian Doctors Orchestra on behalf of Eastern Health recently.

The concert, held at the Healesville Memorial Hall last Sunday, was truly fabulous.

Despite the adverse weather conditions and power outage all over Healesville, common sense and community spirit prevailed and the “show must go on” attitude won.

The 300-plus, sold-out audience was treated to an exquisite performance from the 60-plus orchestra which included violins, cello, double bass, flute, viola, piccolo, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, percussion, bassoon and harpsichord.

Led by Concertmaster Sonia Baldock, with the mood and performance directed by Conductor Warwick Stengards, one of the many highlights of the day was Caroline Hopson as soloist in ‘The Lark Ascending’.

Orchestra members travel from all over Australia and donate their time and all their expenses.

The Australian Doctors Orchestra is a group of classically trained medical professionals who have a passion for music and their instruments.

We - the Healesville and broader community - were so fortunate to be the beneficiaries of this passion.

Two doctors with local links, Dr Bronwyn Francis and Dr Barbara Manovel, who play in the orchestra were instrumental in getting the Australian Doctors Orchestra to Healesville.

It was a memorable and ethereal experience as this truly remarkable orchestra performed The Lark - pieces from Beethoven, Bach, Schubert and more.

All proceeds from the day and raffles were donated to the Healesville Hospital redevelopment to purchase equipment and items to enhance patient well-being - this could be anything from new coffee cups for dialysis patients to monitoring equipment for surgery.

All those usually small things you don’t think of when moving house or renovating!

Over $12,000 was raised from this event.

Great job and well done to all involved especially the Australian Doctors Orchestra, Eastern Health Foundation and Jenny and her team at the Memorial Hall.

Tech time

By Peter Douglas WORK on the new Yarra Ranges Tech School began in earnest on Friday, 14 October.

Minister for Education, James Merlino, and Member for Eastern Victoria, Daniel Mulino, visited the location of the new school, Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside campus, to mark the start of construction.

The launch represents another step towards the region’s students gaining access to a high-tech innovation hub.

Once complete, students from 18 local secondary schools will learn science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at the school, while the locations will house a high-tech robotics lab, virtual reality rooms and fabrication labs.

The school’s focus will be on precision manufacturing, medical robotics, sustainability and renewables, bio-technology, food and fibre.

The aim is to equip students with the skills they need for high-tech jobs, both today and into the future.

Mr Merlino said this would represent great opportunity for students.

“A tech school is not a traditional school - it’s a shared campus for local secondary schools that is equipped with leading-edge technology to provide students a new type of learning environment as part of their enrolment at their local secondary school,” he said.

The campus has strong ties to industry and employers, giving students crucial insight into employment skills and pathways into education, training and employment.

Classes will be delivered in partnership with Deakin University and William Angliss Institute, with work expected to be completed by January next year.

Facebook onslaught hits

By Jesse Graham A YARRA Ranges Council election candidate will be pressing charges against a Facebook poster, after violent and abusive messages were posted about her online.

Chelsea McNab, who is running in the O’Shannassy Ward against incumbent councillor Jim Child, was notified by friends that a photo of her had been posted on an anti-Greens Facebook page.

The caption begins “Is this Victoria’s worst local council candidate?”, and goes on to criticise Ms McNab for her support of the Great Forest National Park (GFNP) campaign.

The topic has been divisive between timber industry and environment group representatives, who often clash over concerns for industry jobs against the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum in the Toolangi State Forest.

However, commenters on the post quickly started posting personal abuse towards Ms McNab, with two commenters saying she should be kicked and sent to the Middle East and decapitated.

One commenter also posted details of where Ms McNab lives.

Speaking to the Mail, Ms McNab, who is not a Greens-endorsed candidate, said it was confronting to read the posts, and that they made her worried for her safety and that of her children.

She said she reported the post to Facebook, but was told the post did not breach the website’s community standards, and would be pressing charges through police.

“I feel like I don’t want to be in this situation,” Ms McNab said.

“When I signed up to be a councillor, the intention was genuinely for the good of the community and it wasn’t

Cr Child told the Mail that the commentary on the page was “absolutely outrageous”, and that he did not condone the comments against Ms McNab. “I believe that local government elections should be about local government issues, and that’s all it should be about,” he said.

“It shouldn’t be about criticising fellow candidates - that should never happen, I would never engage in it.

“I just could not condone that behaviour at all - it’s just absolutely outrageous that people should be making those comments.”

“I will not respond to that, and I never will,” he said.

Tributes in the timber EACH year the Timber Memorial Service is held to reflect, remember and pay tribute to the hard-working men and women from the timber industry who have lost their lives.

Robbie Heritage, of Heritage and Heritage Funerals, is busy preparing for the 2016 Timber Memorial Service to be held at the Heritage

Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock at 11am on Saturday, 22 October.

Since its inception in 2009, the memorial service has steadily grown and is now an annual October event within the Yarra Valley.

Truck drivers, log carters, sawmillers, fallers and all who have contributed to the timber industry are

remembered.

This year, among others, the service will pay special tribute to the McConachie, Humphreys and Lynch families.

Mr Heritage said the Heritage Pioneers Chapel was built to care for families in the Valley.

“It was dedicated to the timber

workers of Victoria as a place of honour to the industry and its workers to ensure the memories of those hard, risky days are not forgotten,” he said.

As such, a huge redgum log stump stands as the lectern in the chapel.

Timber industry ‘not’ council business FRIENDS of Forestry member Jacqui Commans has provided the following response over the story of candidate Chelsea McNab facing online abuse in a political environment: I’ll start with saying that no-one we know has written these supposed threats to Chelsea McNab, nor have we seen these threats. I speak for only the people we know in the timber industry, and we do not condone threats of violence, especially toward women.

If these threats are real, then the correct channel of course is the police.

Over the course of the past few days, many comments have been posted on the various social media sites regarding the upcoming local government elections. Some very

positive comments, especially where the discussed issues have been all about the local government /council agenda; (but) some very negative comments where the topics being discussed have been focused on closing down a sustainable and vibrant timber industry by pushing for a GFNP (Great Forest National Park).

Our timber industry is a state and federally run industry; it employs thousands throughout its production processes, and is ‘not’ local government business. In Victoria alone, there are in excess of 200,000 bush users. All will be affected; most of them negatively should our remaining state forests get turned into a GFNP. That tells me that on a public page such as Chelsea McNab’s Facebook page and the other social media out-

lets that Chelsea McNab is using to send her messages that she supports the closure of our timber industry by supporting a GFNP she is going to upset many people. Especially the people who work in the industry, support the industry and also those who are just sick and tired of their council elect pushing the ideals of the Greens.

Many of the comments that have been made about Chelsea have been vulgar, personal and pretty awful.

No-one deserves that. There are social media trolls on every page; I have read all of the comments that I could and very few indeed are even from the area or Victoria.

They are trolls posting. If you are going to be out there and contentious with ideas, then unfortunately you run the risk of being one of their vic-

tims. Our workers have faeces flung at their trucks, urine thrown at their trucks, spat on, blockades so that they can’t get through to work and we get death threats, too. All because we work in an industry that a minority do not support. We don’t need another council elect trying to close it down through a platform that is there for local government issues. We hope you get some answers from the police, Chelsea McNab, regarding the supposed threats to you. IMAGINE getting a message out of the blue from a friend, with a link to a Facebook page.

Imagine that link took you to a crudely edited photo of yourself, with rabid abuse from people in your community, including threats of violence, slurs and information about where you live.

That was reality for Yarra Ranges Council election candidate Chelsea McNab on Wednesday, 12 October, when friends notified her about numerous comments directed at her, because of her election bid.

Speaking to me about the experience, Ms McNab said she was frightened by the comments, particularly the idea that information about where she and her children live was on the internet, in the hands of people who in the same thread were talking about having her killed.

The post was on an anti-Greens Facebook page, despite the fact that Ms McNab, though ideologically aligned to the party, is not a party-endorsed candidate.

But none of the comments were articulate deconstructions of her political beliefs or an honest, thought-out rebuttal – they were calls to have her kicked in the face, shot, or sent to the Middle East and beheaded.

This isn’t about politics – this is about a group of people posting abuse and threats towards a woman online, including details of where she lives, because they disagree with what she thinks. This is unacceptable, regardless of who is the recipient. This isn’t about freedom of speech – you’re welcome to say what you want, but freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of speech.

If you approached someone on the street and called them a “hippie slut”, said their face was perfect for kicking, that they should be sent to the Middle East to have their “head chopped off”, that they should be shot and that they are a “piece of s***”, and said you knew where they lived, you’d have charges slapped on you so quickly it’d make your misogynistic, idiotic head spin.

If you had these things said to you, you’d hopefully understand the worry and the fear that it causes, and realise that nobody deserves to feel that way, regardless of their political belief.

These sort of comments should never be posted, but it’s also the responsibility of bystanders to call out the behaviour where they see it – if you see your friend posting misogynistic, abusive or threatening messages to or about anyone, explain to them why what they’re doing is wrong.

It’s never easy to take a friend or a family member to task for their behaviour, but it’s the only way to generate change, and sometimes it takes the words of someone close to make you realise you’ve done the wrong thing.

Before spouting abuse online, try to remember that those on the receiving end are people, and not just a name on a screen.

Cookie child goes extra mile

By Jodie Symonds SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Yarra Junction girl Alyssa Walker baked over 650 cookies during the football season to raise $600 for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

It all started when the Walker family attended the Anzac Day clash at Warburton, and allowed Alyssa to bake Anzac cookies with her friend to col-

lect donations.

“She had a wonderful response, and wanted to keep raising money on other games,” Mum Lauren said.

Alyssa then attended games throughout the season to raise more money.

Lauren said Alyssa’s inspiration for collecting money came from her cousin spending a lot of time in RCH.

“I think it’s wonderful – she is always looking for a way to help and loves helping at school fund-raisers,” Lauren said.

“Everyone has been fantastic - with purchasing the cookies and may even donate extra as it goes to a good cause.”

Lauren said Alyssa had finished baking due to the football season ending, but was thinking of ideas to raise money ahead of the cricket season.

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford announced on Tuesday 11 October that the Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farm and Pet Shops) Bill 2016 was to be introduced into the Victorian Parliament.

Ms Pulford said the Bill would mean that breeders can only keep up to 10 fertile female dogs, down from 350, with a deadline of April 2020 for breeders to reduce their numbers through breeding out.

The amendment will also mean that any Victorian with a fertile female dog who sells her puppies, or who has three or more fertile female cats and sells her kittens will have to register as a domestic animal business with their local council.

Pet shops will only be able to sell puppies and kittens if they have come from a registered pound, shelter or foster carer under the proposed change.

“Victorians love their pets, and we all want to know our furry family members have come from safe and caring homes, not from illegal and cruel puppy farms,” Ms Pulford said.

Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said the organisation “fully supports” the government’s amendments.

“Time and time again, shelters such as Animal Aid are left to deal with the butterfly effect puppy farm and backyard breeders cause,” he said “The Victorian Government has recently requested submissions for further animal welfare reform and we look forward to additional positive action

around compliance and enforcement of breaches in animal protection laws.”

Foster carers looking after relinquished pets will be able to care for up to five animals without registering as a domestic animal business and will have reduced registration fees through council if the proposed changes pass Parliament.

A central registry of domestic animal businesses will also be created by the Victorian Government, which Ms Pulford said will assist councils with registering breeders and policing the new law.

Storm help for citizens

By Peter Douglas WITH many residents in the Yarra Ranges still enduring power outages and the effects of storm damage, Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging citizens to make use of available assistance.

Winds of up to 120km/h lashed the region on Sunday, 9 October, causing major damage and destruction throughout the region.

According to council, its trees crew has received around 500 tree-related calls from Yarra Ranges residents since Sunday, requiring their support to clean up and remove fallen trees on roads and inspect trees that might be dangerous.

They have received reports of 36 homes that have suffered significant damage due to fallen trees.

According to council, when reports come in, properties are inspected and residents are referred to DHHS for hardship assistance.

An Emergency Relief Centre (ERC) was established on Sunday evening at 9pm for residents who may have required temporary accommodation because of damage to their homes.

The ERC was closed at 12 midnight due to lack of demand, which indicated that residents may have been able to access shelter through family and friends.

Council is currently co-ordinating relief and recovery efforts with other community agencies to provide support for impacted residents, including accommodation options, shower and laundry access, links to emergency food providers and information regarding food and water safety, food disposal and septic tank management.

Yarra Ranges Council has prepared the following fact sheet for those still affected: Where can I go if I need accommodation tonight?

Before and after a power failure: Once cold or frozen food is no longer cold to touch, it can be kept and eaten for up to four hours and then it must be thrown away; If it is raw meat, it should be cooked and eaten; Eat hot food within four hours of it being heated; and If power is restored when frozen food is still frozen solid, the food is safe.

Can I drink the tank water if my power is still out?

The quality of your tank water may be compromised if your pump has not been working due to the power outage.

Bottled water may be your best option in the meantime.

For concerns regarding the safety of your tank water, please contact council's public health officers on 1300 368 333.

Wastewater and septic systems: If you rely on power for your septic system to function, and your property is without power, the system may be affected.

Sewage contains harmful bacteria and viruses, and diseases can be transmitted if appropriate measures are not taken.

Indications that your septic system may require attention include: A pungent odour around the tank and land application area; Blocked fixtures and wastewater overflowing from the relief point; High sludge levels within the primary tank; and Sewage flowing up through the toilet and sinks.

If your tank is full or overflowing, contact your service agent and/or licenced septic tank clearing service.

If your tank or effluent lines are damaged, contact a licensed plumber or drainer for emergency works.

New venue for jazz

MUSIC will fill the grounds of the Yarra Valley Racecourse on Sunday 23 October, with the annual Cuban Jazz Festival returning for its 13th year.

The festival, which has been run at Coldstream’s Rochford Wines in previous years, will be held at the racecourse in Yarra Glen for the first time, running from 11am to 6pm.

Festival director Alex Mitchelson told the Mail that the weather was looking fine after the valley’s recent storms, and that he hoped this year’s event would mark 13 straight years of good weather for the festival.

“Everyone loves some sunny weather - we’re all just waiting for that sun to come through, and it’s perfect,” he said.

Mr Mitchelson said the move to the racecourse meant that more food and wine providers would be at the festival, with local providers Zonzo Estate, De Bortoli, Hargreaves Hill, St Ronans Cider and Coldstream Brewery, among others, offering refreshments for festival goers.

“This really has opened up a new demographic and offer a better product and find that common thread that everyone loves,” he said.

STORMY weather won’t be enough to dampen the spirits of passionate poets, with the C.J. Dennis Poetry Competition and Festival going ahead on the weekend.

The festival will run on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 October, bringing poets from around the country to the Singing Gardens of C.J. Dennis in Toolangi to perform.

C.J. Dennis Society secretary Jim Brown said that poet Geoffrey Graham would bring Dennis’s words to life in an “unforgettable" way during his performance at the festival.

He said the gardens had been badly impacted by the storms on Sunday, 9 October, but that preparations were still underway for the event to go ahead.

The festival also marks a significant anniversary, the centenary of the publication of Dennis’s The Moods of Ginger Mick.

Mr Brown said Ginger Mick was a character often in trouble with the law, but was one of The Sentimental Bloke’s best friends in Dennis’s work; in the stories, Mick goes to Gallipoli in World War I, writing letters back home to family and friends before being killed in the war.

Mr Brown said the weekend’s theme would be about Ginger Mick, and that winners of the poetry competition would be announced on the Saturday.

Interesting train of thought The Girl on the Train (MA15+) Starring: Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson and Haley Bennett THE Girl on the Train is an enthralling psychological thriller adapted from the novel by Paula Hawkins.

Rachel (Emily Blunt) is a depressed alcoholic who spends every day on the train to New York, fantasising about a happy couple she passes, while also obsessing over her ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux).

When the girl she observes, Megan (Haley Ben-

nett), goes missing, Rachel is convinced she saw something, and resolves to find her.

In an exemplary cast, Blunt delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as Rachel.

Her numb despair and helplessness are palpable, and you find yourself deeply invested in her search for Megan, as it finally gives her a longcraved sense of purpose.

The dialogue is detailed and deeply insightful but never feels like a novel-esque info-dump, and the slowburning narrative gradually unravels a fascinating mystery.

The Girl on the Train is

also a prime example of the 'unreliable narrator’ trope.

Rachel’s (and our) assumptions about the people around her and even her own memories are constantly questioned and broken down, and this alone is immensely suspenseful.

Unfortunately, the flashbacks can be disorienting, and the film does a poor job of establishing its characters in the introduction.

While not as cohesive as Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train is still an engrossing, intimately bleak and superbly acted thriller.

Off to a great start

By Chris Anderson AFTER a rain-affected Round 1, cricket action in the Yarra Valley kicked off in earnest for the 2016-'17 season on Saturday.

After a close-fought season last year, Round 2 results suggest another may be on the way.

With last season’s finalists pitted against each other, this round always shaped as a crucial start to the season.

Woori Yallock started their search for a third consecutive premiership with a polished performance against Warburton at home.

The Tigers batted first in fantastic conditions and openers Ryan Smith (46) and Mick Dwyer (35) continued where they left off, setting the tone for the innings.

The pair’s partnership was a key factor in Woori Yallock’s success last season.

With consistent contributions at the top of the order, they allowed the attacking flair of their impressive middle-order to shine.

Saturday was no different as the pair laid an excellent foundation on which to build.

Both would have been bitterly disappointed to not cash in on impressive starts, while their wickets allowed the Burras to remain in the contest.

The Lever brothers, Daniel (4/34) and David (2/34), did their best to stem the flow as they always do.

But the home side managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over and, with Simon Young contributing a brisk 33 late, they were able to post a strong total of 7/169.

Warburton-Millgrove boasts a deep and powerful batting line-up.

So although the total was going to be tough one to chase, they gave themselves every chance.

David Lever (47) did his best to get the ball rolling with his unmistakable cavalier approach.

But his efforts were stunted by the work of Tigers speed merchants, Jackson Wright (4/23) and Simon Young (3/32).

Their wickets, at both ends of the innings, proved crucial in keeping the Burras in check.

The visitors kept the score ticking over, but the fall of regular wickets slowed the momentum of the innings.

Mick Walker (41) did his best to keep his beloved Burras in the game; but in the end, the reigning premiers proved too strong, dismissing the visitors for 140.

Healesville impressed with their postChristmas form last season and they hosted Mount Evelyn in a key contest.

The home side elected to bat and were quickly put under pressure with early wickets.

Scott Hamer joined Bryan Scanlon (60) at the crease and built a useful partnership to regain momentum.

Unfortunately, Hamer was unable to capitalise.

With the quick fall of Ash Hamer, the Bloods again found themselves in a precarious position at 4/47.

Scanlon continued his considered approach to his innings, patiently waiting for errant deliveries and dispatching them when necessary.

His wicket with the score on 100 proved crucial in the visitors slowing the innings and despite a bright fin-

Chad Witherdin (3/28) was the pick of the bowlers, crucial in restricting the score with late wickets, while Kane Jones (2/14) topped the rest of the bowlers with an economical spell.

The visitors made an impressive start with young stars Daniel Giblin (45) and Jon Williams putting together a brisk start.

Despite Williams’ exit, Gareth Fraser (32) joined Giblin at the wicket and after a 61-run partnership, the Rovers were well poised at 1/82.

Giblin’s stroke-play ended within sight of a much-deserved half century.

But with Kane Jones maintaining the momentum with Fraser, this contest looked all but done at 2/108 with plenty of overs in the bank.

Mount Evelyn has a habit of getting the wobbles; and when Fraser and Jones fell in consecutive overs, the wobbles soon became uncontrollable shakes.

The Rovers proceeded to lose 5/17, which breathed new life into the contest.

Unfortunately for the Bloods, it wasn’t enough to steal an unlikely victory as Luke Jones cooly guided the tail to the victory target with two wickets in hand.

The final game of the round proved that low scores don’t deter from the excitement of the game.

Seville hosted Yarra Junction in a game where both sides were keen to get the season started on a positive note after missing finals last season.

Seville batted first, though found the going tough against a disciplined attack and a slow outfield.

Mostly, the Blues matched the Eagles with a disciplined approach with the bat.

Tom Page (30) and Andy Di Pietro (26) did their best to beef up the score.

But despite batting out the overs, the home side found it difficult to find some free flowing scoring which ultimately restricted their score to 7/92.

Captain Quinton Hodgkinson (2/12) led a miserly Eagles bowling line-up that didn’t give an inch for 40 overs.

At the break, most would’ve pencilled this in as a comfortable victory for the Eagles as all they was one of their attacking stars to get off the leash for a short time to wrap this up.

The Seville bowlers weren’t having any of it.

Wickets up front to Mark Sandfort (3/27) immediately quelled the attacking threat, and enabled the young home side to get into the contest.

Like Seville, Yarra Junction found it difficult to score freely, and with regular wickets an engrossing tussle ensued.

Andy Kay’s (3/28) miserly spin dried up the score with regular wickets and with the ninth wicket falling with still runs to get, little separated the teams.

In the end, Seville’s total proved too small as the Eagles squeaked home with just one wicket in hand.

So with just one round completed, next weekend proves crucial for all teams as Saturday action sees the start of two day matches, while Sunday sees the teams compete in crucial one day fixtures.

Years of waiting for ball

By Peter Douglas FORMER Healesville High School student Sarah D’Arcy is set to make her AFL women’s league debut next year.

The highly touted tall forward had been on recruiters’ radars for some time, while her hard work was rewarded on Wednesday 12 October, when Collingwood called her name out with pick number 22 during the 2016 AFL women’s draft.

The announcement represented years of hard work for D’Arcy, 25, who has held ambitions of competing

at the elite level for many years.

D’Arcy originally played with the Yarra Valley Cougars, before plying her trade in recent years with the Eastern Devils in the VFL state league.

D’Arcy spoke with the ‘Mail’ just moments after her drafting.

“It’s just unbelievable, I can’t believe it’s finally happened,” she said.

“I’ve had great support from friends, team-mates and my work place (Australian Traffic Control) and I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates.”

D’Arcy said she was to head into the Magpies’ Holden Centre to meet

her new team-mates, before starting training on 21 November.

One of the club’s marquee recruits is renowned goal-kicker Moana Hope, with whom D’Arcy will be aiming to form a formidable forward combination.

Her drafting was also welcome news for her Richmond-fanatic Dad, Brian D’Arcy.

Mr D’Arcy, a former Healesville High School teacher, said he was rapt with the news.

Although, being a Richmond fan, he said it would take a while to get used to watching his daughter wear

black and white stripes.

“I’ve been practising ‘go Pies’ all day, but it just doesn’t feel right,” he said.

Though, he was confident his daughter would thrive in a professional environment like Collingwood.

“Up until two years ago, she really couldn’t do too much with her football,” he said.

“But now she trains every day, she’s right into the diet and just loves it.

“I think she’ll do really well at Collingwood.”

Mr D’Arcy expects Sarah will play

a pivotal role, given the 16-a-side, fastpaced nature of the game.

“I think she’ll play a (St Kilda star) Nick Riewoldt type of role ... she’ll push up the ground and be fairly mobile,” he said.

“Her job will be to get it to Mo (Hope).”

Mr D’Arcy, who is now an assistant principal at Yea High School, said his family was extremely proud of her efforts.

He always believed she would get drafted, but said there was never any guarantee.

Motorsport fans entertained at return to racing

By Dean Thompson ALEXANDRA and District Speedway Club began the 2016/’17 season with club category drivers battling for club points as they chase the possibility of being the class champion at the end of the season.

Alexandra local resident Luke Fallon was among the winners, along with Courtney Meakins for her first feature win in the National Junior Category and Nick Chrystie taking a hard-fought win in the Standard Saloon division.

Fallon had been a standout driver all evening.

After securing pole position, he was able to out drive the number two ranked driver in Victoria, Andrew Jordan, in the final.

There was lots going on behind the lead duo with Steve Kershaw, Dale Smith and, for a while, Shane Kruger in the top half of the field.

Kruger was deemed to have been tapped and spun in the final and trying to wash off speed Lisa McPherson had nowhere to go and crunched into Kruger, ending both their attack on the top five.

Rookie driver Matt Stampfli showed great skill as he stayed out of trouble and worked his way forward in the changing conditions of the race track.

However, as he made his way into the top five, Fallon stretched his lead over Jordan, eventually crossing the finish line three seconds ahead of Jordan then Kershaw a further 5 seconds from Healesville back, Stampfli, Smith, Danny Eastham, Matt Chiminello and Paul Allen.

With the Standard Saloon Victorian title at Alexandra in March when 60 cars are expected to fill the pit enclosure, local young gun Nick Chrystie was able to survive the challenges for the win.

A great stoush between Brendon Eames and Scott Angus soon ended, as

Angus at full speed lost traction of the rear of the car and slammed into the concrete.

Amazingly, he continued on with a damaged car that later his father said will be a write-off.

Chrystie took the win over Poole, while Wangaratta club members Andrew Robl and Trevor Evans were next.

Darryl Joosten from the Corowa-based club, and Angus and Kenneth Mankey were another competitor from Wangaratta.

Pole position driver in the Junior Sedans, Kasey Garlick, led at the drop of the green in the final with Tim Gorski and a quick moving Courtney Meakins battling behind.

Meakins started at the back of the field and was in third in the first couple of laps while Garlick led the trio up to the back markers in the field in the first couple of laps.

Meakins passed Gorski and soon set about catching up to Garlick.

As the 10-lap heat ran down Meakins ran a high line and started to get closer to the leader.

On the very last lap, Garlick had to make a split second decision on how to deal with a backmarker and she hesitated and Meakins pounced and had the great speed out of turn four and clawed past Garlick at the line to win by .122 of a second.

In third place behind Meakins and Garlick in the Juniors was Tim Gorski, then the second of the Garlick sisters Jessel; then the second of the Gorski brothers Jeremy, Nick Cherry, was next ahead of Rhys Meakins and Sharlotte McPherson.

Lenny Bates was too good in the Street Stocks, winning all three heats and the final with Debbie Jones ad Lee Beach sharing the podium and the Ladies top three on points was Lisa McPherson, Alex Smith and Tegan Bullard.

Great racing from the juniors with four races from five going the distance without a stoppage, the same to for the Sports Sedans and three out of four races for the Standard Saloons.

Fastest drivers in each class for the day include Luke Fallon 20.019 in heat two, Allan Poole 23.104 in heat three, Lisa

McPherson in the Ladies at 22.370 in heat two, Bates in Street Stocks 22.344 during heat two and Kasey Garlick in heat four of the Junior Sedans with a one lap time of 22.810.

Alexandra returns on 19 November, with the visiting Production Sedans slated in for a feature race.

WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY 4BBB Stableford: In this paired competition, Bill Dunn and Lorenzo-Erle combined beautifully to rack up 44 points to be winners on the day. Noel Hyndman and Ken Barratt were runners-up, just one point behind. The balls went down to 42. NTPs: Andrew McMath (9th), C.H.B. (15th).

TWILIGHT The first winner for this 2016/'17 twilight season was Ash Hall, who scored 19 points. Steuart Hawke was runner-up on 18. Balls extended to 15.

NTPs: Ms Nursey (1st), John Hall (3rd), ‘Happy’ Gilmore (9th).

THURSDAY This week’s winner was Dave Wappitt, with a whopping 22 points (he obviously didn’t play with his usual ‘distracting’ group!). Runner-up, on a countback with an equally impressive 20 points, was Ossie McClay. The rundown of balls only extended to 18. NTP: Steve Noonan (10th), Ash Hall (12th), Geoff Fall (15th).

Meredith had 10 ‘magnificent’ points to clearly win the NARGA award.

SATURDAY Stableford: The day’s theme was for current members to invite past members back to the club. It was great to see a dozen familiar faces playing; names like Tim Rait, Dave Cockroft, Arthur Senior, ‘Garthy’, Sue Barker, the Frenches and even John Papworth (a member from the '70s, who went off to live down at beautiful Yarram). John ended up being the guest winner with an impressive 37 points (impressive because he kept marvelling at how much the course had changed in 40 years!).

The guest runner-up was Dave Cockroft with 31 points. The member winner was Lorenzo Erle on 42 points, proving he is on a hot streak. The member runner-up was Alan Johnston with 39 points. The ball rundown extended to 33. NTPs: Lorenzo (3rd), Dave Cockroft (5th), Ron Hottes (9th), Barry Maltman (12th), Mr Kempton (15th).

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics is only two weeks into the track and field season and club records are already being broken.

This includes both at Saturday morning Little Athletics and at the afternoon AV Shield where our senior team competes.

A fantastic turnout of the younger athletes on Saturday morning took advantage of some very healthy tail winds to record some excellent results in many events.

It was fantastic to see some great numbers in each age group making the competitive and social side of athletics so much more enjoyable.

A big thanks to all the helpers, team leaders and others helping when asked.

Without your help and support, the club would not be able to produce the fun event and atmosphere that they do.

The senior team competed in very windy conditions at Nunawading on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the wind, the club had another strong showing of athletes across the various age groups compete.

Well done to everyone who competed and welcome to the new athletes, Martin, Daniel and Olivia.

Results are not yet available, but after a strong showing in Round 1, the club is hopeful of continuing this week.

YARRA JUNCTION BOWLS YARRA Junction Bowling Club’s midweek and Saturday pennant teams struggled against skilled opponents and the elements this week.

The midweek match against Healesville on their home ground saw Healesville win by 41 points.

The closest score was Ray Ring’s team scoring 19 against Healesville’s 26, but Healesville were just too good on the day.

The Saturday match against Montmorency, which was also on their home ground, was a battle against strong winds for both teams.

Rodney Barber’s team were the best performers for Yarra Junction with a 20 to 15 win over their Montmorency opponents.

Montmorency’s other teams made the most of their home green advantage, scoring 77 to Yarra Junction’s 69.

Turbo Toyota TOYOTA’S new C-HR premium SUV will be the first vehicle in the company’s Australian range to be equipped with a powerful yet efficient 1.2-litre turbo engine.

Direct injection, a watercooled turbo and an expanded intelligent variable valve-timing system offer performance levels equivalent to a significantly larger engine, but with lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The compact and lightweight turbo petrol engine generates maximum power of 85kW and

an impressive 185Nm of torque from just 1500rpm all the way to 4000rpm.

It adopts a multi-pronged approach to deliver engaging responsiveness and acceleration while incorporating fuel-saving technology previously reserved for hybrid engines, including the ability to switch to the fuelsaving Atkinson cycle.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said the new engine is a direct benefit of the global company’s new productdevelopment strategy TNGA,

Toyota New Global Architecture.

The C-HR’s turbo petrol engine alternates between the conventional Otto cycle in normal driving and the highly efficient Atkinson cycle under low engine loads.

It achieves this with a range of advanced technologies, including a new limited-volume intake system that ensures more rapid combustion for immediate response and a high compression ratio to improve power and efficiency.
