Nguyen later claimed he had forgotten the knife was in his hand when he started punching the victim. During the scuffle, Nguyen’s cap and sunglasses were dislodged which enabled his face to be identified on CCTV. Nguyen was arrested at Monash Medical Centre on 4 April where he was being treated for a drug overdose. His counsel had told the County Court that he’d tried to kill himself with sleeping pills and a large dose of heroin because he thought he had killed the attendant. Nguyen had “gone off the rails” after his mother died from cancer more than a decade ago. He descended to heroin use, and committed drug and dishonesty offences.

At one stage he briefly moved to Queensland to escape the drug scene and went on a methadone program. Several weeks before the armed robbery, Nguyen was unemployed, with little income and had relapsed into heroin use. The robbery was fuelled by Nguyen’s drug habit. Judge Quin said Nguyen’s rehabilitation prospects were good, given his family support and his reasonable work history. “Hopefully, your viewing of the CCTV footage and your remorse will dissuade you from heroin use in the future.” Nguyen’s parole period was set at three years. A man who stabbed an elderly shop-keeper during a robbery at a Noble Park milk bar in March has been jailed for up to five years. Tony Van Nguyen, 31, of Springvale, had pleaded guilty to armed robbery and intentionally causing injury over the attack on the 63-year-old victim on 28 March. Judge Claire Quin noted during sentencing at the Victorian County Court on 7 October the “gratuitous” and “vicious” attack had a significant impact on the victim. The shop-keeper had stated in his victim impact statement that he felt the attack was not over and would never end. “My body aches, my mind is a mess, my

finances are zero and no longer trust. “Life without trust and security is a very dark place.” During the attack, which was captured on CCTV, Nguyen, wearing a cap, dark hoodie and sunglasses, asked the victim for cigarettes. When the attendant turned to unlock the cigarette cabinet, Nguyen pulled out a 30-centimetre knife, put his arm around the man’s neck and held a knife to the man’s throat. During a struggle, the victim was stabbed in the legs, hands and ear about 10 times. He was pushed to the floor by Nguyen, who demanded his wallet and then stole $200 from the cash register. He was later hospitalised for multiple puncture wounds.

Video link to stab attack By Casey Neill Detectives hope video from a Noble Park fight will identify the man who inflicted life-threatening stab wounds on a Berwick man. “He’s very lucky to be alive,” Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Kim Alp said. On Thursday 13 October, she released CCTV footage that shows a fight breaking out, vehicles she wants to identify and people who could assist with inquiries. She said the 24-year-old victim and four friends arrived at a surprise 22nd birthday party on Ian Street about 4am on Saturday 1 October. “The party had finished and there was a lot of people out in the street, gathered around,” Sen Const Alp said. Police allege they threatened the victim and his friend, who tried to reason with them before running back towards the party. “The victim tripped on the edge of a gutter. He’s fallen to the ground where he’s been assaulted by punches and kicks,” Sen Const Alp said. “He’s been stabbed on 11 occasions to his stomach and abdomen area, as well as his chest and upper leg. “There were a number of people who stepped in between the victim and offender to stop the victim being further attacked. “The victim has been bundled into a mate’s

vehicle and they have conveyed him to the Dandenong Hospital.” He endured several hours of surgery “but surgeons were able to stem the bleeding”. “His injuries included a punctured lung and arterial damage to the top of his leg,” Sen Const Alp said. “He’s recovering well. He’s very positive and he’s been of great assistance to us.” The alleged attackers fled on foot along Mons Parade before driving off in the Commodore and were described as African in appearance and aged in their early 20s. “The information that we’ve got suggests it is an unprovoked attack,” she said. Investigators would like to speak to two men who spoke with the Commodore driver shortly after the stabbing and the occupants of a lightcoloured SUV seen on Ian Street. Police are hunting a man who allegedly stalked an 18-year-old schoolgirl in Springvale. Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) investigators are appealing for public help to identify him. They’ve been told a man approached the teen as she walked to school multiple times over a three-week period between August and September. She first encountered him on a weekday morning in late August, about 8.20am, while walking along Mile Creek path into Oakdale Court. On this occasion the suspect was wearing shorts with his socks pulled up around his calves and a fluoro yellow polo shirt, and was walking his golden brown coloured dog, possibly a Staffy named Honey. Police allege that over the following weeks the man approached the teenager on several occasions between 8am and 9am around Mile Creek Path, Oakdale Court, Avondale Street and Glendale Road. About 8.25am on Tuesday 15 September the teenager was waiting for a friend on Mile Creek path, again near Oakdale Court, when he approached her. It’s alleged he put his arm around her and pulled her against his chest and She tried to recoil away but the man pulled her in tighter and kissed the top of her head numerous times. Police said the teenager struggled and the man let her go.

Police pile up charges A Dandenong man who was bailed on 65 theft and burglary charges will now answer an extra 19 charges. On Tuesday 11 October, a Dandenong magistrate remanded 25-year-old Adem Tezeli to reappear on Tuesday 15 November. The 19 new charges related to theft, burglary, driving while his licence was suspended, contravening bail conditions and failing to answer bail, all of which occurred following his release on bail on Tuesday 13 September. Following the searches officers arrested Tezeli and charged him with 65 offences relating to burglary and theft. He was presented directly to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court where the magistrate released him on bail to reappear on Thursday 6 October. He failed to appear.

One of Greater Dandenong’s most wanted criminals is now behind bars. The Journal reported on 14 September that the new Dandenong-based Divisional Response Unit (DRU) was searching for 18-year-old Adam Scherwinski. He was arrested on Monday 10 October over 11 outstanding warrants, relating to failing to appear at court, criminal damage, theft and aggravated burglary. It’s alleged he committed offences across the south-east, and charges stem from eight different police units. He was remanded at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 11 October to reappear on Tuesday 25 October.

Noble Park Secondary College is the country’s 19th most improved high school, latest NAPLAN results show. Principal Pam Dyson couldn’t be prouder. “That’s including all secondary schools - government and independent and Catholic schools,” she said. “There was only one other Victorian school ahead of us. “I’m very proud of our staff, who I believe to be very passionate and committed. “I don’t believe it’s coincidence. “I believe it’s recognition of the hard work that’s been put into the individualisation.” The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. Latest figures showed Noble Park’s Year 7 results had improved from 1469 in 2013 to 1560 last year. The Year 9 results improved from 1598 in 2013 to 1658 last year. Ms Dyson said the school’s mission was to help students to grow. “We have a consistent teaching and learning framework that the staff have and also that the students have,” she said. “Our emphasis has been getting to know the students, understanding where they’re at, then developing a program that is individualised to their needs and making sure they grow. “For us to get recognition of being one of the most improved schools is really great because it’s our mantra, to get them to grow. “Our staff have done a lot of work in relation to their curriculum planning and also in the way they understand the individual needs of students. “We’re personalising the learning of our students, yet we’re doing that under the umbrella of a consistent framework.” Ms Dyson said having a smaller school, of about 455 students did help teachers to get to know their students. 100 years ago 12 October 1916 Patriotic Mrs A W Pearson has been appointed to take charge of a section in Collins Street, Melbourne, on Friday 20th - “Hospital Button Day” - and donations of flowers, jams, pickles, and any kind of saleable goods to help stock the kiosk will be thankfully received. 50 years ago 11 October 1966 Telephone numbers to change Plans for an automatic telephone exchange at Berwick progressed a further stage when a new building in Gloucester Avenue was officially handed over to the PMG recently. The building will use modern switching equipment, which has been adopted for all future automatic exchanges in Australia. It is designed to enable the telephone

network to develop towards the ultimate of nation-wide dialling for all subscribers. The existing telephone numbers of Berwick subscribers will have to be changed and new numbers consisting of seven digits in the number range 797 1000 upwards will be allotted. The Berwick exchange is part of the large Dandenong local network and is within local call distance of the Melbourne metropolitan network. Conversion to automatic working will result in almost all local calls being subscriberdialled. Those calls which will require the assistance of an operator will be handled at the Dandenong exchange. 20 years ago 21 October 1996 Cathie blasts our ‘raw deal’ Times have been tough for the City of Greater

Dandenong council, but after the state and federal budgets there could be tougher times to come. The city’s commissioners believe the Federal Government has given the council a raw deal. At last Monday’s meeting, chief commission Mr Ian Cathie criticised the Federal Government for not giving help to areas such as Dandenong and Springvale. He said the city had high unemployment and a number of people for whom English was a second language but still did not receive the federal support they deserved. At the same time other councils were supposedly getting “huge” payouts through the grants system. Mr Cathie said the city’s ability to provide services for a growing community increasingly depended on government funds since the state had imposed a 20 per cent reduction in rates and the capping of rate levels at the

1995-’96 levels. “The rates now supply less than half of our budget, so we are more and more dependent on government handouts. The last few kilometres were a bit of a strain, to the point that I was just shuffling my feet,” he said.

but l don’t see them going away any time soon. In the UK they don’t have state governments and it works quite well from what l have seen. So with elections coming up this Saturday, it’s important to have your say on who will represent you. Sadly politics plays a big part in council now and is a far cry from when l started back in 1991. Don’t waste your vote. Talk to your candidates and ask them the hard questions. After 25 years l feel it’s time to move on and to see what the next challenge in life is for me. I feel very privileged to have been able to represent the people of this great city for so long. I hope my contribution to our city has helped in some small way. Not only do we operate rubbish collections, but we also provide street cleaning, stormwater drain clearing, footpath maintenance in retail areas, garden and park cleansing, as well as picking up dumped rubbish and hard waste. I could not imagine any other form of government doing what councils do. l’m not saying we get it right all the time, but l know we generally do a good job. It’s easy for shock jocks to criticize councils but they know little of the service we provide. This council is a $200 million business and has about 1000 people working full-time and parttime. We are one of the biggest employers in the city offering about 140 business units to our ratepayers. Can you imagine any state government trying to do what this council does? The easiest thing to do is be critical of councils

I took an interest in local council back in 1989 after I attended many council meetings in Dandenong. I might say, a lot of people do not care about any form of government let alone councils, but in what other form of government can you get hold of your representative and sit down and have a chat with relative ease? I have always found the best part of my role as a city councillor has been the people l have met and the opportunities I’ve had. I consider myself to be very privileged to represent the city l was born in. Of course, the meetings have also been important as we are probably one of the biggest businesses in the city. We do so much – l don’t think a lot of the community would understand what a large part councils play in our daily life. We offer so many services from aged services to recreation facilities for the young to the old.

A man – described as the “perfect trafficker” – has been granted bail for trafficking after nearly $100,000 of drugs were seized during a police raid of his home in Latimer Street, Noble Park. So Aung, 33, runs his business Perfect Lawn Care Services and lives with his wife and three children in the home, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 10 October. It had been guarded inside and out by CCTV and stashed with deal bags and foils of drugs in a multitude of spots, informant Senior Constable Joshua Tatton told the court. During the 7 October raid, Aung was found with more than $4000 in cash on him as well as more than $1000 in $5 notes seized from his bedroom. Police seized 396.5 grams of cannabis, 68.5 grams of methamphetamine, 38.6 grams of heroin, three grams of cocaine and 2.2 grams of hashish from his home, Sen Const Tatton said. The drugs had an estimated street value of $98,221. When asked to identify each stash of drugs Aung referred to them in “dollar amounts”, Sen Const Tatton told the court. The front of the house was “family-oriented” with children’s bedrooms, Sen Const Tatton told the court. The rear – including Aung’s bedroom – was riddled with drugs found in several chests of drawers, a bum bag, a biscuit tin, guttering and two angle-grinder containers. Eleven prohibited and controlled weapons – such as Samurai swords, daggers in sheathes and home-made knuckle dusters – were allegedly seized from the bedroom and inside the ceiling space. Other seized paraphernalia were sets of digital scales, and notebooks and diaries in Burmese script and with lists of numbers.

Two non-residing males were arrested during the raid and charged with drug possession. Denise Abadee, a private forensic drug and alcohol clinician in Prahran, told the court that Aung claimed he was using half-a-gram of heroin, up to three points of ice and up to three grams of cannabis daily. Under cross-examination, Ms Abadee said Aung wasn’t on medication for his substance use, nor “presenting with the symptoms of someone in the midst of heroin withdrawal”. Aung’s lawyer said there was no strong evidence of Aung using drugs – apart from a bowl of loose cannabis in his bedroom. The lawyer argued there were not yet witness statements, video footage nor undercover surveillance to confirm the extent of trafficking or Aung’s role. Aung’s risk of re-offending would be reduced by the now-looming threat of jail hanging over his head, she said. Dandenong magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Aung – who had a clean criminal record – was perhaps the “perfect trafficker” with a “perfect set-up”. Mr Vandersteen described Aung’s CCTV network surveying the front door and inside the house as “like a bank”. The prosecution presented a strong direct case and that “on the face of it” Aung didn’t seem to be using drugs, he said. He granted bail because of Aung’s age, his ties to the jurisdiction, delays for forensic analysis, lack of priors, family support and available treatment. Bail conditions included Aung living at home on a night curfew, reporting daily to police, surrendering his passport and being subject to the directions of Ms Abadee. Aung was ordered to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for a CREDIT bail assessment on 24 October.

Residents’ plea to end hooning Noble Park North residents fear speeding and hooning drivers are putting families in danger. At the Monday 10 October Greater Dandenong Council meeting, councillors tabled a joint letter from nine Timberglade Drive residents asking for speed humps, traffic islands or another traffic calming measure to improve safety in the street. The letter was forwarded to the relevant council business unit for consideration. Isabel Padilla has lived in Timberglade for 34 years. “It’s been a very quiet street, but now it’s getting really bad,” she said. Drivers speed through and perform burnouts, she said, and she feels particularly vulnerable because her home is on a corner. Her daughter Danielle Jacobs lives with her and has two children, aged two and four. “You can tell the speed people are going,” she said. “You can tell they’re flying. “I used to run around in the street as a kid but I’m afraid to let my kids outside.” Ms Jacobs said the issues occurred day and night. Jasna, who lives across the street, said most speeding took place on Friday and Saturday nights. “It’s a family street here,” she said.

“We need speed humps. They just come out of nowhere and do hooning and burnouts.” Jasna also called for police come and see the behaviour, which also occurred in neighbouring industrial precinct Overseas Drive and on Princes Highway. “The police know about it,” she said. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts urged residents to contact his team or Crime Stoppers with any issues like these. “Once we’re aware of it we will definitely take some action,” he said. “We’re only too happy to hear about these things.” The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid said all requests for traffic calming devices were assessed within the council’s Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) program. “The LATM program is used by council to prioritise road safety matters raised by the public,” she said. “Each street in the program is assessed based on a variety of factors including vehicle speeds, traffic volumes, crash statistics, road geometry, as well as sociological needs.” Ms Reid said this method of ranking and prioritisation ensured the streets experiencing the most severe traffic conditions were allocated the highest priority for the installation of traffic calming devices when funds became available.

School shocked by sensory boost By Casey Neill A $70,000 multi-sensory room is starting to take shape at Wallarano Primary School. Principal Gail Doney said this was largely thanks to $10,000 donations from Club Noble and Dingley Village Bendigo Bank. From discussions, she was expecting about $5000 from each and was blown away by the $20,000 total presented on Friday 7 October. “Noble Park children deserve as much, if not more, than children in more affluent areas,” she said. “I like to see them get something. It just warms my heart. “I was absolutely thrilled to bits and delighted and so grateful. “We do our best to save for it, but that just tips it over the edge.” Ms Doney said a builder would renovate the classroom during the Christmas holidays and she hoped to finish fitting out the space by the end of term one. It will feature tubes filled with bubbles, multisensory lights and different textures.

“The educational advantages of it are huge,” Ms Doney said. “It’s not going to be something that’s just a playroom.” The school has more than 40 children with disabilities, about 10 per cent of its student body. She said a multi-sensory room would provide a calming background to their learning. Research shows that time spent in a multisensory environment increases concentration, focuses attention, improves alertness, awakens memories, and improves creativity, social relations and communications. The research also shows such rooms encourage thought, intelligence and social skill development. Ms Doney said tactile learners and children with anxiety could also benefit. “We work very much on children self-regulating their behaviour,” she said. “We have a saying here that Wallarano children do the right thing whether they’re being watched or not. “This will help with monitoring themselves and regulating their responses.”

Serenity setting By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unkempt outdoors area at Hallam Senior College has been transformed into a garden of serenity by Dandenong South East Rotary Club and a former student. The area, previously avoided by students, will now be a sanctuary for art activity as well as being the ideal place to chill out, arts leading teacher Amanda Muxworthy said at the garden opening on 6 October. “It’s been amazing to see. For the past 18 months I’ve wanted to tackle this space,” Ms Muxworthy said. “The students are loving it.” Ms Muxworthy oversaw the project while the design was conceived by landscaper Aaron Betts, who only graduated from the college several years ago. Up to a dozen Rotarian volunteers, including John Peck, Neil Fullard and president Athol Bailey, gave creation to Mr Betts’ vision over several weekends.

They constructed benches and raised beds, which are filled with succulents, other droughttolerant plants, fruits, vegetables and students’ artwork. They gave a lick of paint to the grapevine-entangled pergola and enclosure walls, and poured down crushed rock in between the beds. Mr Peck said the Rotarians loved plying their handiwork and showing students what Rotary Clubs were all about. “We were looking around for good projects to do,” he told Star News. During the opening, there was talk of the college’s VCAL students working with Rotary to assembly wooden hands for war victims. Principal Anne Martin said the area which abuts the college’s arts studios was traditionally overgrown and unloved. Nearby “before” photos show the muddied, barren area in the early throes of transformation. Now with a bit of a love, it will be a great space for students and staff, she said.

Quarter of a century of service By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie placed a box of tissues at retiring councillor John Kelly’s seat before his final council meeting got underway. The 25-year local government veteran spoke with plenty of emotion but managed to get through his goodbyes without shedding a tear. He even managed a few laughs as he reflected on his decision to not recontest his Silverleaf Ward seat at the Saturday 22 October council elections. Cr Kelly’s youngest son Matt was just two weeks old when he attended his first meeting in 1991. “Matt’s about six-foot-three now,” he said. “That’s what happens when you feed them.” Matt and siblings Josh, Sarah and Tim “used to wreak a bit of havoc” on a chair lift on the staircase at the old Dandenong council chambers, Cr Kelly recalled. He thanked his wife Liz and his parents, aged 91 and 93. “I have no regrets,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed the journey and I thank you.” Cr Kelly did acknowledge that the role wasn’t easy, and said he’d been criticised more often than he’d received a pat on the back. “My motto has always been ‘I don’t care what your race is, I don’t care what your politics are, I don’t care what your religion is - if I can help you, I’ll try’,” he said. He even contested a motion of no confidence. “That’s life in a big city,” he said. “You’ve got to take those things on the chin. “I’ve had a chance to reflect and move on, although I’ve mentioned it so perhaps I haven’t moved on.” He served as mayor in 2008 and on several boards and committees, with waste collection and Dandenong Market his passions. “I’ve been involved at the market since I first got elected,” he said. “There’s not many cities in Australia that have a market so old and with such diverse businesses in there. “What a great asset.

Cr Memeti said his colleague urged him to

advice when you were first elected. “It’s going to be a strange place without you being there.” In a public question, resident Colin Riddiford wished Cr Kelly all the best “on behalf of thousands of ratepayers he’s helped”. “Let us hope that it is a short retirement,” he said.

Instant park proposed as unit project rejected By Casey Neill Councillors have knocked back a 39-unit project in Noble Park and tied the developer to including public open space in any future site designs. Councillor Roz Blades moved to refuse the application for 41-43, 47 and 49-51 Callander Road at the Monday 10 October Greater Dandenong Council meeting, saying the proposal “would result in an unacceptable overdevelopment of the site which will cause traffic chaos”. The council received 20 objections relating to parking and amenity. Cr Peter Brown said the project was out of character with the area and did not respect the

amenity, and that each home would be on less than 300 square metres. He said the 12,122 square metre site was an infill area, meaning the council could claim 5 per cent for its open space fund. Cr Brown then moved a subsequent motion that the developer be required to make that contribution as 606 square metres of land and not cash in lieu. “This is one way to ensure that we keep an area of parkland open,” he said. “If we take cash in lieu we’re losing significant trees on that site.” He said an intelligently designed site could retain 30 to 40-year-old trees on the periphery and create an instant park.

Cr Blades said it was an unusual motion “but it’s also unique and it’s also do-able”. “I think it’s a good idea,” she said. “We have had, in other circumstances, cash in lieu for parking. “That hasn’t always been that successful, I don’t think.” Cr Sean O’Reilly was the sole objector to the motion. “There’s nothing wrong with the outcomes that are being sought by this motion,” he said. “What is wrong is how the outcomes are looking to be achieved. “We’re deciding on one element of a hypothetical application.”

Kidnapper and home invader jailed for eight years By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed for up to eight-and-a-half years over a “terrifying” armed home invasion in Narre Warren South, as well as two kidnappings and a car-jacking in March and April this year. Henry Toatoalei, 29, of Noble Park, pleaded guilty to 15 charges at the County Court of Victoria on 7 October including charges of possessing a sawn-off shotgun and a sawn-off rifle as a prohibited person. Toatoalei made full admissions, including kidnapping a man under the pretence of supplying him methamphetamine in Fountain Gate shopping centre car park about 5am on 18 March. Once lured into the back seat of a Mercedes Benz four-wheel drive, the victim was put in a choke-hold by Toatoalei while another passenger punched the victim to the head and face. The victim was stripped of his shoes and shorts, and robbed of $1400 cash, mobile phone, cigarettes and 0.5 grams of ice – as well as the keys

of the victim’s father’s Statesman parked at Fountain Gate. Toatoalei admitted to then stealing the Statesman. About 5.30am on 2 April, Toatoalei pulled a shotgun on a man parked in a hotel car park in Cranbourne and forced the victim to climb into their own vehicle’s boot as part of a debt-collection operation. The accused held the weapon to the man’s face and told him he’d shoot the victim in the leg if he didn’t comply. Toatoalei drove the victim’s Calais, with the victim in the boot, and co-offenders following in another car. During the journey, the victim has managed to escape the boot into the front seat, and pleaded for Toatoalei to desist. Toatoalei punched and then slammed the shotgun’s butt into the victim’s face several times. The accused attempted to blackmail the victim to sign over his car, but the victim was able to pop the boot during the journey and escape.

At 8am, Toatoalei - while armed with a shotgun - and an unidentified male broke into the victim’s home in Narre Warren South. The intruders forced three occupants out of their bedrooms, ordered them to lay on their stomachs in the lounge room and demanded the whereabouts of the victim. Toatoalei held a shotgun to the head of the victim’s brother and told him that the victim would be “dead”. The house was then looted of wallets, phones, a TV, X-Box and video games. On 7 April, a man and woman were forced out of a car at gunpoint by Toatoalei as well as other armed offenders in Springvale South. Judge Gavan Marshall said Toatoalei was Samoan-born and subject to a dysfunctional background. There was still a chance of rehabilitation for the accused provided he overcame his long-standing alcohol and ice abuse, the judge said. Toatoalei’s non-parole period was set at five years.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly was too busy with his re-election campaign to look at a Springvale planning application. He successfully moved to defer the proposal for seven double-storey dwellings at 63 Royal Avenue at the Monday 10 October Greater Dandenong Council meeting. The item will now return to council after the Saturday 22 October local government elections. Lightwood Ward representative Cr O’Reilly said he was too busy “due to other pressures” and wanted more time to examine the application. Cr Youhorn Chea seconded the motion and indicated he’d also been short on time. The motion passed unanimously but Cr Peter Brown said he only reserved his opposition because he respected spending more time on the application. “I do not endorse the reason O’Reilly gave for deferral,” he said. He said they’d both had one and a half weeks to read the council report on the item. “I had plenty of time to read it,” he said. “I don’t accept running a political campaign as a reason.” The application received five objections, relating to increased noise, additional traffic, inadequate car parking, a small front setback, overcrowding and amenity. The council report on the application found it was consistent with the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme and a permit should be granted. An existing single-storey house and garage would be demolished. All seven new dwellings would be double storey. Two would have three bedrooms and a double-garage, and the others would each have two bedrooms and single garages.

Dandenong students are giving six people a lifechanging hand. Dandenong High School raised more than $2800 for Rotary Club of Dandenong’s Building Hands for Landmine Victims project. The cash bought six prosthetic hands, which Rotarians helped VCAL students to assemble at the school on Tuesday 4 October. Rotarian Don Cantwell said the club had now provided 40 hands thanks to sponsorship from businesses and community groups, and that Doveton College had also contributed one hand. “There are estimated to be 384,000 people who have lost one or both hands to landmines and these are mostly children,” he said. “There are 120 million landmines still set in the world, mostly in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and there are being cleared at a rate of only 100,000 per year. “At this rate it will take 1200 years to clear all the mines! “If you lose your hands you lose your independence. “By fitting these hands, although not perfect, we restore some independence and hope.”

Laundry set to clean up

Industry has its say on crossing

An industry forum will help to shape the new Abbotts Road rail bridge. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) invited local business representatives and landowners, residents, commuters and employees from the Dandenong South area to help it prepare for construction and delivery of the project. It’s seeking feedback on potential designs and construction impacts. The forum will run from noon to 2pm on Friday 21 October at Punthill, 157-163 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. The Journal reported on 23 September that there would be a rail bridge over Abbotts Road from 2019. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced that construction would start next year. She said the solution followed extensive consultation on a range of options with local business owners and operators, commuters and landowners. More than 23,000 vehicles use the intersection every day. A train derailed after hitting a truck at the intersection in 2012, resulting in one death and several serious injuries. The incident followed another death at the intersection five years earlier. The State Government announced last November that the crossing would be gone by 2019. In February this year, the Journal reported that businesses were fuming over plans to cut Abbotts Road in half at the railway crossing - to instead build the Remington Drive overpass. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) did not initially put forward any other plans. But Ms Williams said there were always other options on the table, and two weeks later the LXRA released four additional prospective projects for public consultation. On 23 May Ms Williams announced that the option had been taken off the table.

A laundry, a farm machinery manufacturer and an electronics recycler were the final three nominees for the new Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. President Paul Broom applauded the Cabrini Linen Service, Hugh Murray and Sons and Quantum Recycling Solutions at the final chamber breakfast for the year at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale on Wednesday 12 October. “From here we go onto our gala night to celebrate and acknowledge our winners,” he said. That evening will take place on Wednesday 30 November. Cabrini Linen Service (CLS) managing director Ralf Pelz said the not-for-profit provided specialist linen and laundry services to Victorian healthcare, aged care and hospitality industries. “We originally started our business in Melbourne in the basement of Cabrini Hospital,” he said. The business moved to East Hawthorn but outgrew the space. It relocated to Dandenong South three years ago with a mission to help the area’s high unemployment, at-risk youths and new migrants. “I’m happy for people to work with us for a short time and move on to bigger and better pastures,” Mr Pelz said. It’s more than doubled its turnover since the move, now handles 200 tonnes of linen each week and employs more than 130 people. “We’ve gone from strength to strength,” Mr Pelz said. “There’s certainly room for more growth for us.” Hugh Murray and Sons operations manager Adrian Norton-Jones said Hugh Murray started the company in Buln Buln in 1903.

Dandenong was on the rail line, enabling transport into New South Wales, and the manufacturer has been in the suburb since 1915. The company specialises in harrows. “We make one thing and we make it well,” Mr Norton-Jones said. “A lot of the Chinese imports, the farmers will think they’re getting a good deal. “But they drag it round the paddock and there’s only half left.” Managing director Lokesh Baskaran estab-

By Casey Neill Dandenong North’s Kyle Hillbrich is juggling caring for his dad with studies and part-time work - and he’s only 16. Chisholm Institute teacher Janis Mitchell announced her “lovely ex-student” as the Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Awards breakfast in Springvale on Wednesday 12 October. She first met Kyle in September last year in her foundation VCAL class. “He got through a 20-week course in 10 weeks,” she said. “Kyle did exactly the same thing with certificate two in general education. He slowed down in certificate three because he got a part-time job.” Kyle had applied for dozens of jobs with no luck but after help from Chisholm to write a resume and cover letter, he applied for a job at Hollier Dicksons in Dandenong South. “Twenty minutes after I applied for that job I got a call asking when could I start,” he said. Ms Mitchell said Kyle had a lot of domestic responsibilities on top of study and work as he was the carer for his dad. “He has got his learner’s so he can drive his dad to appointments in his own car, which he has saved up for,” she said. Kyle will start VCE next year and plans to study early childhood education. “In six years hopefully I’ll be in a school teaching Grade 3s,” he said. “Teachers helped me to get where I am. “Apparently in England they’ve got a fair few jobs for male teachers so, hopefully, I can travel.”

range of engines and components. HM Gem general manager Dean Taylor said he’d prefer applicants to have a Year 12 certificate and “a passion for engineering perfection”. Mr Taylor has been with the company for 20 years after starting as an apprentice automotive machinist and fitter and turner. “Like most young guys I was interested in engines and cars,” he said. HM Gem started in a small garage in 1969 and has taken on about 460 apprentices over the years.

The company has received the Prime Minister’s Employer of the Year award four times and was acknowledged as the Best Engine Reconditioner in this year’s VACC Awards to Industry. Founder Bruce Parker was inducted into the Greater Dandenong Hall of Fame at the Premier Regional Business Awards in April. HM GEM Engines also made the top four in the guest-voted Premier Regional Business Award.

“People are using the internet to get their first impression of you.” Nathanial Bibby also told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Wednesday 12 October that the “digital disruption” already affecting most businesses would continue until 2050. The guest speaker asked attendees at Springvale’s Greyhounds Entertainment for a show of hands from those who used LinkedIn, and found 95 per cent had a presence on the social media tool. They’re among 7.5 million users in Australia and 450 million world-wide. Mr Bibby said their LinkedIn page should be their personal website, they should put keywords in their headline, and recommendations helped a profile to stand out. He urged LinkedIn users to join relevant groups to find new contacts and said there was “no harm” in accepting connection requests from people they didn’t know. “Would you be selective about who can visit your website?” he said. Mr Bibby suggested using the advanced search feature, and sending personalised connection requests and follow-up messages. He said that on average, 50 per cent accepted the request and 10 to 20 per cent replied to the follow-up, and compared that to a 1 per cent average return on cold calls. Mr Bibby urged people to avoid explaining what they did in the message. “You can’t push information on people,” he said. And he said they should talk about what they can do for the person they’re writing to, not vice-versa.

Grant to guide girl leadership By Casey Neill Afghan women and girls can gain confidence and leadership skills through a new Girl Guides group. On the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl Child, the State Government announced a grant to Girl Guides Victoria to deliver the project in Greater Dandenong and Casey. CEO Jennifer Fleming said Guides would work with Dandenong’s Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) on the two-year project. “Our intention is to train young Afghan women to be Girl Guide leaders,” she said. “They’ll do that by starting a couple of new units from their community. “They’ll be doing apprenticeship-style training with girls. “The unit’s a really great program from our perspective because we get to train new leaders and involve girls for whom girl guides would probably normally be out of reach.” Ms Fleming said SMRC would help Guides connect with interested women and girls in the community through its relationships. Guides will then speak to the women about where they’d like the unit to be run. “It’ll be at a place where they’ll feel comfortable,” she said. “We’ll start training the new leaders in the new year, after summer holidays are over.” Ms Fleming hopes the unit will be up and run-

ning by the start of Term 2. “We’re looking for any women from the community interested in being leaders,” she said. “We’re keen to train and support them.” She said the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship was sponsoring the grant with a view to young women in the community gaining leadership skills, self-confidence and self-esteem and decreasing their chances of becoming family violence victims. The project is one of 17 family violence and gender equality projects funded through the State Government’s new $16 million Capacity Building and Participation Program. It’s designed to encourage greater participation and inclusiveness within culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence Fiona Richardson said International Day of the Girl Child shone a spotlight on why supporting young girls was so critical to breaking the cycle of disadvantage. “When we support girls to reach their full potential, we see community-wide benefits,” she said. Love blooms from the ashes of war After 70 years of marriage, Alfred and Jennigje ‘Jenny’ Maslin still spend hours holding hands. The couple celebrated their platinum anniversary on Wednesday 28 September at Noble Manor Aged Care in Noble Park, where they’ve lived for the past three years. They immigrated to Australia from England in 1977 and have three sons, who all live locally. Alf and Jenny met during the final months of World War II. Alf was serving with the British Army and his unit was stationed in Holland, where Jenny lived and worked. Alf brought Jenny back to Slough, Buckinghamshire, after the war and they married in a registry office on 28 September 1946. The following year they had a second ceremony in a church in Jenny’s home town, Hengelo, in the Netherlands. Their son Les and daughter-in-law Sue said Alf and Jenny were in good health for their ages, 94 and 93 respectively. “They live happily together at Noble Manor and still spend many hours sitting side by side holding hands,” they said. “It’s a real long-lasting love affair for a couple that could not understand each other the very first time they met.”

Cricket coup snares batting star By Nick Creely Buckley Ridges has pulled off a major recruiting coup by signing former Australian and Victorian batsman David Hussey for the DDCA T20 tournament. The 39-year-old is the current captain of the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, boasting an immense record that has taken him all over the globe. In a first-class record lasting 15 years, Hussey represented Australia in 69 ODIs and 39 T20Is, and has made an international century. The all-rounders most famous knock was a mind-boggling 88 not out off 44 balls against South Africa in 2009 in a pace-attack featuring the legendary Dale Steyn and pace duo Albie Morkel and Wayne Parnell. Hussey is one of the most distinguished T20 players in the history of the game, and has played more than 250 matches in this format in a range of competitions such as the IPL, English T20 and BBL. The man known as Huss will now take his game to Pultney Street where he is expected to play a major part in Buckley’s pursuit of the T20 title. DDCA Secretary Ray Nicholls said that the signing of Hussey is going to do wonders for the T20 competition. “It’s going to be exciting for our local competition. “Huss won’t muck around, I wouldn’t have thought.

“We actually had Dave as our speaker at last year’s Alan Wookey Medal Night and he was quite well received. “Buckley Ridges have had some massive signings this year and Dave just adds star-power to that. “I’m sure that alone will attract a lot of people to the games – and they actually play Springvale South first up so I hope Hussey is available because it’s going to be exciting,” Cooper said. In other DDCA recruiting news, Dandenong opening batsman Brett Forsyth will also once again play with Springvale South in this year’s T20 competition as its marquee player. Springvale South will be looking for a threepeat in the Twenty20 competition, after winning the title for the last two years. The 27-year-old opening batsman, who is a former junior player at Springvale South, as well as a Victorian second XI representative, is a massive signing for the Bloods, and will ensure they remain the heavy favourites to win it again. Forsyth has played 19 Twenty20 games as the Blood’s marquee signing, averaging 59.35 since first featuring in the competition in 2011/12. Forsyth has played 139 games for Dandenong in the Victorian Premier competition, amassing 11 centuries, including a brilliant 100 not-out during the 2008/09 T20 series semi-final. During the champion batsman’s junior days, he won a club champion award with the Bloods. Springvale South secretary Tony Cooper is ex-

cited by the prospect of the star batsman returning to the club. “Brett brings great experience and leadership for our developing players. “His class with the bat is a key reason that we have had success in this format. “We expect to again be hard to beat with Brett’s leadership,” Cooper said. Narre South has also signed Casey-South Melbourne captain Lachlan Sperling as its marquee player this year. The middle-order batsman, who is a clean striker of the ball, will be available for every match this T20 tournament. The Annual DDCA Twenty20 competition is set to kick off on 19 October, with 20 clubs across four divisions set to battle it out. Other clubs participating in this year’s competition are busy behind the scenes, looking for marquee players to sign and draw big crowds. There is speculation that Bradley Hodge, who has played in the tournament before, may feature at a club at some stage in this year’s T20 series, while there is another rumour that a former West Indian cricketer may take part. Prize money in this year’s competition will be $2000, which includes $1000 for the winner, $600 for the runners-up and $200 for third and fourth. A development tour is now being organised to provide the opportunity for any young aspiring cricketer under the age of 18 to travel to Sri Lanka and experience the island paradise. There was an information night held at Shepley Oval last Tuesday in which organizers answered any questions or concerns regarding the tour.

The tour, which will run from 29 March to 13 April 2017 will combine both cricket and culture in a unique and exciting way. The Sri Lankan experience will include return airfares, accommodation, transportation by airconditioned bus, an opportunity to play on worldclass cricket venues, daily breakfast and dinners, sightseeing tours, travel and playing shirts, tour photographs plus other experiences. Dandenong Cricket Club admin manager Elizabeth Williamson said the tour is a great opportunity for aspiring cricketers to gain valuable cultural and cricket experiences. “We're looking at taking a group of 12 players 18 years and under and they will play approximately six to eight on international and

college grounds. They will get a taste of where the test cricketers play in Kandy, Colombo and Galle,” Williamson said. Adding to the fantastic opportunity to play in some of the world’s best cricketing venues, the tour squad will also spend time volunteering in some tsunami struck zones. “We hope to arrange a day of volunteering at the Foundation of Goodness, and that's situated down in Galle where a lot of the tsunami victims are. “Basically, it’s a cricket and cultural experience tour as well, and will be very rewarding for the individuals lucky enough to go,” Williamson said. The Foundation of Goodness is a not-for-profit organisation set up in 1999 and provides essen-

tial services to the ancestral village of Seenigama, Galle. Sri Lankan cricket legend Kumar Sangakarra is a major part of the organisation. First class spinner in the mix for coming season By Nicholas Creely Dandenong UK import Callum Parkinson is set for a big season at the Premier club, and is excited about the prospects for the season ahead. The talented 19-year-old left arm spinner is the major signing for Dandenong this season having made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in last season’s County Championship. Highly rated back in the UK, Parkinson featured in four matches for Derbyshire, taking 14 wickets at 37.92, with a solid 4/90 and 48 not-out in his debut match. “It was a big surprise, really, I wasn’t really expecting to break into the first team in Derby but I went really well and luckily played a few games towards the end of the season which was really good for my experience and development,” Parkinson said. “It’s a massive step up obviously from the county second’s team, but I took everything in my stride and will keep learning. But the young star is back in Australia for the summer of cricket, and can’t be any happier. “I landed on the 26 September, actually, and it’s good to be back here. “I played at Mount Waverly last year and we won the subbies flag so I had a good time last year – it was good. Parkinson, who the Panthers will be hoping can help lift the club back into the First XI finals mix, believes the standard of cricket in Victoria is as good as anything he has experienced back home. “The standard is very high and there is just such a difference to back home. “The training also is very intense and there are a lot of blokes down on a Tuesday and Thursday night competing for places in the top side, which is obviously very healthy at clubs. “But what I’ve also noticed is the depth of the teams; blokes that are coming in at 8, 9 and 10 are of a good standard and that’s really healthy. “The grounds are definitely a lot bigger over here as well – as a spinner it can be tricky bowling on smaller grounds at home but over here it works to my advantage that the grounds are big,” Parkinson said. “In terms of the wicket, they are actually quite similar, and when I got here last year I assumed the pitches would be rock hard, bouncy and fast, but they’re not too dissimilar to back home.” Parkinson is known as a spinner with excellent control, turn and bounce, but views in-game battles as his biggest strength. “I’m a very competitive cricketer and I like to be in a battle with the opposition, as well as being aggressive in what I do and not try and focus on what they’re doing, really. Speaking on the Panthers season so far heading into round five, Parkinson is confident the group has what it takes. “I think as a group we’re really confident of doing well in all grades. “The first XI, there are at least 15 or 16 guys competing for a place in the team and there’s a good blend of experienced guys like Forsyth and Butterfield, and guys like myself and Edwards,

Warm-up for Spain circuit By Nicholas Creely BRDC rising star Thomas Randle enjoyed a two-day test driving a Comtec Racing Formula V8 3.5 at Spain’s Curcuit de Valencia last week. Randle, from Narre Warren North, drove the car in preparation for his debut in the high-speed open wheel championship, which will commence on the weekend of 28-30 October at Jerez Circuit. During the course of the two-day test, Randle completed more than 100 laps, performed practice starts and completed pit stop simulations, lapping the 4.070k circuit over six seconds faster than he did while driving a FIA European Formula Three car at the same venue last year.

Randle said the experience of driving the car was invaluable, and believes he is primed to perform at the Jerez Circuit later in the month. “Driving the car was just phenomenal and the power was incredible, it just keeps on accelerating. “It was very similar to the feeling I got from the SAAB sports sedan, as my head was getting lifted up from the wind I was going that fast; around 280km/h on the approach to turn one. “The grip on new tyres was unbelievable and I was reaching 215km/h minimum speed through the first corner which felt incredible, and pulling almost three Gs laterally. “I did take some time getting used to how quickly I could apply the throttle and had a few wheel-spin moments here and there. “The main thing I worked on was trying to slow everything down in my brain when everything was actually happening so quickly. “The carbon brakes were another area I had to get used to as the first two laps you have virtually no brakes at all until they warm up, but once they have heat in them they’re very aggressive and the braking distances very short. “It was great to be back at Valencia, a track which I already have the knowledge of, and I was running six seconds a lap faster than the times I did in there in Formula Three. “I feel very fortunate to have been given this amazing opportunity by Comtec Racing. “It is easily the fastest and best race car I have ever driven with cornering speeds way in excess of anything I’ve ever experienced. “I’m really looking forward to Jerez and hoping to continue learning more and more about the car and its capabilities, and also establishing just how close we really are to the pace of the competition,” Randle said.

Lisa recognised for stepping up to keep club ticking By Nicholas Creely HSBC and the Australian Rugby Union have announced the finalists for the 2016 HSBC Volunteer of the Year, and Endeavour Hills Rugby Club’s very own Lisa Campbell is one of them. With more than 400 entries overall, Lisa has made it down to the last five with her impressive work as a hard-working volunteer at her club this season not going unnoticed. The award aims to recognise those individuals who volunteer their time and make a significant contribution to community rugby across Australia. Lisa has been heavily involved with the Endeavour Hills Rugby Club since moving from New Zealand four years ago. Over the past four years, Lisa has served on the committee, helping the struggling club in a variety of time-consuming jobs. If Lisa wins the award, she will receive a grant of $10,000 to improve the facilities and services of her registered club, Endeavour Hill Rugby Club.

Talent bubbles up for selection By Russell Bennett They’ve come from all walks of sporting life to join as one – the first crop of players to stride out onto the field in the AFL Women’s competition. The south-east has long been known as a footy hotbed and Wednesday’s inaugural women’s draft only provided more proof of that with 11 players from the south-east selected. Cranbourne was the big winner with seven of its players finding homes in the AFL while Keysborough’s Jaimee Lambert and former Dandenong WNBL player Alison Downie will also be playing footy on the big stage next year. Lambert was selected with the fifth overall pick in the draft and the first for the Western Bulldogs. She won the Susan Alberti award recently for her performance in this year’s AFL Women’s Exhibition Series and was one of 19 players added to the Bulldogs’ list for the inaugural AFLW season. Speaking to the Western Bulldogs’ website, Lambert said it was a dream come true to be drafted to the Whitten Oval. “I couldn’t be happier than to be at the Bulldogs,” she said. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said it wasn’t just the 22-year-old’s toughness that made her stand out from the pack. “In the all-star game she had nine or 10 tackles but she’s got tricks, she can take a hanger and loves to kick a goal as well so I think we’ve drafted the complete package,” he said. Downie, meanwhile, was selected by the Blues with the 129th overall selection. She is from Diamond Creek and has been playing top-flight football for the past five years.

She was also a VFL Women’s Team of the Year selection in the ruck and all of this is made even more remarkable by the fact that the 32-year-old is also a 326-game veteran of the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL. Meanwhile, Cranbourne VWFL coach Kris Smith could hardly contain his excitement, telling the Journal soon after seven of his players were drafted: “Anything is possible – that’s the attitude we have to instil into these girls. One big year, and anything is possible for them.” The draft started with a bang with Eagles alum Bianca Jakobsson taken with the third overall pick by Carlton. She was later followed into the new competition by former Eagles team mates Kirsten McLeod (pick 28), Danielle Hardiman (35), Hayley Wildes (44), Breann Moody (67), Courtney Clarkson (124) and Jas Grierson (135). “She had her heart set on either Carlton or the Bulldogs so for her to get to Carlton – she was rapt,” Smith said of lifelong Blues fan Jakobsson. “I call her the ultimate professional – she does all the work, and more. “I get to training and she’s been there half an hour before me running laps. “She’ll stick around after training and have shots at goal if she’s got time. “She’s a really hard worker, she’s a great kid, and I said at presentation night she’ll be a future leader of a club. “She’s that excited about it and I know she’ll definitely go really well. “She’ll be able to run up and down those wings and just kill her opponents like she does at VFL level.” Endeavour Hills local Ellie Blackburn is now one of the faces of the AFL after her marquee signing with the Western Bulldogs last week.
