Against convention

By Peter Douglas A GRASSROOTS group of concerned residents is preparing to challenge at VCAT a Yarra Ranges Council decision that paves the way for an expansion of the Belgrave Heights Convention Centre.

The eight-hectare site has been used as a Christian convention centre for more than 50 years, with facilities including a 1650-seat auditorium, reception centre, kiosk, halls, kitchens and numerous caravan and campsites.

Many groups from around Australia use the site annually for conferences, retreats and church camps.

In March this year, council decided, with a five to four vote, to pass a recommendation that would see an extension to the existing place of assembly, tree removal and car park.

The plan also includes a 220-bed accommodation facility and a 374-person dining facility.

However, the plan earned the ire of a group of nearby residents, many of whom were present at the 22 March, 2016, council meeting.

From the group of 21 original objectors to that planning request, a group of about eight formed a committee and are now driving the VCAT challenge, which is due to be heard later next month.

Group representative Sharon McNeil said the group hoped to have the decision overturned, after what the group sees as a failure to achieve any meaningful compromise at mediation.

“I moved to the area 23 years ago, when they (the centre) held about two to three big events a year, which was OK,” she said.

“But over the past five to 10 years, there has been increased activity to an unacceptable level.

“Instead of just at the auditorium, they now have activities on the western side.”

Ms McNeil said the group just wanted to achieve an acceptable outcome for the residents.

“We’re not against the convention centre, or anti-development, but it’s too much activity on a weekly basis,” she said.

“We may not win, they’re a big body with lots of cash behind them.

“But if we do this (challenge), at least we won’t be sitting in our houses wondering what we could’ve done.”

Ms McNeil said about 100 residents attended a public meeting on Wednesday, 21 September, to hear from local

community groups and politicians over the development.

She said land has already been cleared and major earthworks had already started, in preparation for the developments.

In addition to noise and road safety concerns, the group are fearful of the number of people evacuating in the event of a fire, with only one exit road available.

Belgrave local Frank Reid, who is a member of the committee driving the VCAT challenge, said action needed to be taken.

“It’s already gone too far and there is no telling where it will stop,” he said.

“There’ll be even more traffic congestion, noise and lighting, but no benefits at all for the local area.”

Meanwhile, Ms McNeil said the

group was looking for donations to help cover the costs of the VCAT challenge.

Earlier this year, then Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Gawler, defended the application, including concerns around bushfire awareness.

“We’re very aware of these issues, we mow regularly and take measures to prepare accordingly,” he said.

“We completely shut down all events on a code-red day.

“We can’t always remove guests on these days, but there are no events, so there is no incentive for them to stay.”

Mr Gawler said they were responsible citizens, when it came to the noise and the environment.

THE Kids Fun Run with Thomas Engine event has been postponed due to flooding around the Gembrook Station.

Event co-ordinators have said, sadly, Thomas doesn’t have any flippers or a snorkel and he doesn’t want any of his friends to fall over, get wet or muddy.

They have assured those who have already registered that their registration will be automatically transferred to a new date once it is known.

The event had been scheduled to be held on Sunday, 9 October, where children aged between 3 and 12 could have raced the iconic locomotive.

A new date is expected to be announced shortly.

The fun will include the run for kids, showbags for runners, train rides on Thomas, market stalls, a petting zoo, jumping castles, a Thomas hunt, food and more.

As well as being a great day, the event is also an annual fundraiser organised by the Rotary Club of Emerald and District.

This year, registration fees go towards helping to support the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC), which is the only centre of its kind in Australia that specialises in supporting children with cerebral palsy.

Meanwhile, Victoria SES is reminding residents in the Yarra Ranges to remain vigilant as minor flooding continues to hit the region, warning river levels may reach the tops of banks or flow over into low-lying areas.

They also warn local roads may be closed and low bridges may be underwater.

Pilgrimage nearing end

By Peter Douglas THREE Dandenong Ranges friends have reached the closing stages of their epic Spanish pilgrimage, which aims to raise awareness about the impacts of mental illness.

With a 13 October finish now within reach, Cheryl McInness of Belgrave, Kym Murphy of Kalorama and Tony Whyte of Monbulk recently reached the Santiago, Spain, stage of their participation in this year’s El Camino de Santiago.

The recent milestone marks a major achievement in their 884km journey from the French Pyrenees to the north-west of Spain.

During their adventure, the trio have encountered sweltering autumn days, occasional strong winds and rain, weary and blistered feet, and early morning starts.

Walking at a pace of four kilometres per hour, with a few rest stops for coffee and tapas, Cheryl, Kym and Tony cover anywhere from 20km to 30km per day.

In her blog about the adventure, Kym told of the challenges they had encountered.

“The Camino has a way of

bringing people and situations when you least expect it,” she said.

“Often, they are to answer a request, no matter how long ago it was made, or to hold up the mirror, to teach you something.

“There may be a synchronicity, a random act of kindness from a stranger, or something that addresses a fear or activates you in some way.”

Though, she said it was the special experiences that made it all worthwhile.

“When we were in Torres del Rio, an elderly Spanish lady sat next to me at a cafe and sang while tapping her walking stick on the ground to create the beat,” she said.

“My heart filled with so much gratitude and joy, I almost cried.

“It is these things that make the Camino so special.”

Cheryl, Kym and Tony plan to finish the Camino Santiago de Compostela on or near 13 October, during Mental Health Week.

Their efforts are also on behalf of Wellways Australia, a not-for-profit mental health and disability support organisation, and the ‘1 Million Steps for

Mental Health’ event.

Tony met Cheryl and Kym on the Camino in 2014, when they were embarking on their first one.

They became good friends, having a common love of the Dandenong Ranges.

For the trio, the desire to walk the Camino again is about promoting a better understanding of mental illness.

Ms McInness said the trio felt extremely motivated to complete the journey.

“We each know, from personal experience in our own family, about the impacts of mental illness,” she said.

“We also know what a difference the right kinds of support can make.”

Ms McInness has two adult sons, one of whom has a mental illness.

“I am grateful for the quality of life he has, and for the intelligent and beautiful human being that he is,” she said.

Shop closed by fear

Police called after man’s erratic run

MOOROOLBARK police located a disorientated man, aged 23, running through the main street of Lilydale, about 5.30pm on Wednesday 5 October.

Police observed the man, who they believe is of no fixed address, running down John Street in Lilydale, towards Anderson Street.

About five calls were made to police regarding the actions of the man after he was seen near Lilydale Lake, Maroondah Highway, John Street and Anderson Street.

Mooroolbark police told the Mail they believed the man may have been drug-affected and was in “some sort of state of psychosis”.

An ambulance was called, with the man taken to Maroondah Hospital.

Police investigations will continue, though no charges have been laid.

TERRIFIED owners of a Ferntree Gully convenience store have closed their business indefinitely due to safety fears, after an attempted armed robbery just after 9am on Saturday 24 September.

A man entered the Forest Road convenience store, armed with a knife, and demanded goods and cash, investigators have been told.

The owner of the store, who only wanted to be identified as Yang, told the Mail the man who entered the shop was angry and agitated.

“He had a big, big knife,” Yang said.

“He said, ‘money, give me money’.

“My husband was behind counter but I hear from in the shop.”

Police said the man left emptyhanded and fled on foot in a northerly direction.

No-one was injured during the incident.

As a result of the incident, Yang and her husband said they have reluctantly closed the store.

The Forest Road Convenience Store is now closed indefinitely.

SES fields storm of calls EMERALD SES has been busy as a result of the recent harsh weather conditions.

Unit Controller Ben Owen said Emerald SES had received more than 50 calls since severe storms struck on Tuesday 4 October.

However, that figure is likely much higher after strong winds hit on Sunday 9 October.

“It’s higher than our everyday calls, but definitely not uncommon for this time of year,” Mr Owen said.

Five members from Emerald SES assisted in Macclesfield at 12.20pm on Wednesday 5 October, where a horse was unable to get up after laying down as

it sought refuge from a waterlogged and slippery paddock.

Mr Owen said he and the other members attended to help Macclesfield CFA rescue the horse.

“The CFA had already slid a board under the horse by the time we got there - which was a fair bit of work,” he said.

“About 10 minutes later, the horse was up on all fours.”

The horse is now happily in an open paddock eating grass.

Police have put out photographs of Jasmine, a 16-year-old Bayswater girl, after she was reported missing by her family.

She was last seen in early September, and has not made contact with her family since then.

Victoria Police issued a statement on Tuesday, 4 October, appealing for information about the girl, with her family and police concerned for her welfare due to her age and who she may be associating with.

Jasmine is described as about 160 centimetres tall with a slim to medium build and hazel eyes.

STICKERS have been distributed throughout the Yarra Ranges to encourage those going through tough times, to seek help instead of feeling isolated.

The Need to Chat sticker campaign was developed as part of Mental Health Week on 9 to 15 October, by Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Reference Group.

The campaign aims to tackle, and raise awareness for depression and anxiety, two of the top issues facing young people across Australia today.

Stickers will appear in various locations including: Mooroolbark, Yarra Junction, Healesville, Belgrave and in languages such as English, Chin Haka, Chin Zomi and Karen.

Reference group member Tiffany Kuiper, of Lilydale, said the campaign also let people know that if they were feeling down, not to be ashamed.

“There is a lot of stigma around mental illness, and we hope these stickers will help people feel more at ease,” Ms Kuiper said.

Crime is up 24 per cent

THE Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is delighted to be presenting four of its most exciting films at the Cameo Theatre in Belgrave on Friday, 14 October.

In a first for the region, MIFF has included the popular Belgrave attraction as part of its regional tour, with the MIFF Travelling Showcase aiming to support both international and Australian-made works.

MIFF Artistic Director, Michelle Carey, told the ‘Mail’ she expected the films would generate plenty of interest locally.

“You can go to a multiplex at any time, but to see this at a historic site such as the Cameo is a unique experience,” she said.

“Two out of the four films are documentaries ... most are uplifting in their own way.”

Included at the Belgrave tour are ‘The Death and Life of Otto Bloom’, ‘Ella’ and ‘Long Way North’.

But one which will be of particular interest includes a film that brings to life a dark passage in the history of Ferny Creek.

The documentary ‘The Family’ turned the heads of film critics after its debut at the MIFF and will feature at Belgrave.

SEVERAL alarming incidents over the past week have occurred as crime statistics in the Yarra Ranges showed an overall increase of 24 per cent over the 2016 financial year.

Over this period, Crime Statistics Victoria revealed there had been 8803 offences in the Yarra Ranges local government area, up from 7089 in the 2015 financial year, with increases in all major offence divisions.

This included drug offences (up 28.7 per cent), property and deception offences (+ 15.4 per cent), and public order and security offences (plus 33.3 per cent).

One of the more alarming individual trends was an increase in offences of arson, with 135 cases, an increase of 77.6 per cent.

The statistics were released after a spate of disturbing cases in the Yarra Ranges.

These included a Lilydale man, 23, and a woman, 22, who were charged at midnight on Wednesday, 5 October, over the possession of drugs and knives.

Also, a Lilydale man, 42, was arrested shortly after 12am on Tuesday, 4 October, for causing damage to students’ cars parked outside of Mount Lilydale Mercy College.

Meanwhile, Mooroolbark police located a disorientated man, 23, running naked through the main street of Lilydale, about 5.30pm, on Wednesday 5 October.

State Member for Eastern Victoria Region, and Shadow Victoria Police Minister, Ed O’Donohue, said there were not enough first-response police officers available.

“The Yarra Ranges has seen a 24 per cent jump in crime, while police numbers have been slashed by almost five per cent,” Mr O’Donohue said. “(Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews needs to give police the resources needed to re-open all the police stations that have been forced to cut their hours and put more police on the streets.

“That means fewer police to attend urgent call-outs for home invasions, carjackings and family violence.”

Meanwhile, State Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish, said Victorians were getting sick and tired of waking to yet another story about criminals running rampant in their towns, due to police cuts.

“Make no mistake, these crime statistics are the result of Daniel Andrews’ cuts to police, closing of police stations, and weakening of bail laws,” she said.

Ms Carey said there were international representatives in the industry who were taking real notice of this film.

“We weren’t sure how it was going to be received, but it’s being talked about,” she said.

“It’s moving and emotional, but is also a story of resilience.

“Many of those affected, including one of the lead investigators, were present at the film, in what was a truly moving moment.

“The first screening was incredible.

“There was a standing ovation and it was a real drop-dead moving moment.”

Walk wait is over

By Peter Douglas AFTER more than two years in the making, the Mount Dandenong and District Historical Society is set to launch the anticipated Olinda Heritage Walk on Saturday, 15 October.

Designed to offer a snapshot of village life in the early 1900s, the walk features 13 plaques and a large information board, which aim to highlight sites of historical significance.

The project focuses on the Olinda Village settlement pre-1915 and has received enormous support from local businesses and organisations.

Historical Society member Wendy Britt said the work to get the project to launch stage was well worth the effort.

“What we’re trying to communicate to people is there were early pioneers here, but it was in the early 1900s, before the Great Depression, the character really started to develop,” she said.

“The government opened up 10acre blocks to try to get life happening in Olinda.

“Not all those settlers were successful in growing things, but many stores took hold.

“Olinda became a hub ... with butchers and blacksmiths.”

The Historical Society says the actual township of Olinda had its beginnings in 1895, when the first lots in the Olinda Township Reserve were offered for auction.

In a short space of time, the Olinda township grew to include a variety of businesses and services supporting the community.

There were coach services introduced to the township; firstly, horse and buggy, then motorised, which provided transport for locals and visitors.

Ms Britt said the project aimed to help people reflect.

“The plaques are set in close proximity to where these historical sites were believed to be - to give a sense of what the Olinda village would’ve looked like,” she said.

To aid in the experience, Neil Johnson, president of the society, said a booklet to complement the walk had been produced, with support from several local traders.

“We believe that both locals and visitors alike will enjoy learning about the story of the historic Olinda Village,” he said.

One of the major supporters of the heritage walk has been Yarra Ranges councillor, Noel Cliff, who helped to secure funding for the project.

Cr Cliff owned a shop in Olinda for more than 20 years and has a strong affinity with the region.

He said it was important to recognise the township’s past.

“Things change in towns and people always say, ‘We’ll keep in with the scheme of things’, but it’s rubbish, it’s never exactly the same,” he said.

“This is a great idea, marking out and reflecting on what has been here before.”

Cr Cliff paid tribute to the behind-the-scenes work of Pat Hogan from the historical society, whom he said had a wealth of knowledge when it came to the area.

He said there had been a huge swell of support for this project and thanked all those who had contributed.

The Olinda Heritage Walk will be launched at the Olinda Hall on Saturday, 15 October.

Displays will be on show from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, with the official launch taking place at 2pm.

A daily ritual

By Jodie Symonds SASSAFRAS resident Colin Batt and his four-year-old Labrador Emma have been delighting Sassafras shop owners on their morning daily walks.

The pair walks through the town at about 10.30am during rain, hail or shine - and greets customers and shopkeepers along the main street.

Mr Batt has quite a following, with shopkeepers waiting out the front of their businesses to say hello to him and Emma.

He said walking through the town was a mix of socialising and exercise.

“I do like to keep fit, but we’re only doing a small walk today because of the weather,” Mr Batt said.

“It’s good for her (Emma) because she gets a walk and gets to say hello to everybody.

“She’s very spoilt though, some people feed her.”

He said he had always loved

Labradors, because they were kind and obedient.

“Emma is my sixth Labrador and she’s a very good dog,” Mr Batt said.

“She loves attention, though. I could be 50 feet away from someone and she’ll just plonk her bottom down and not move until she gets to say hello to that person and gets a pat.”

Manager at Creswick Natural Fibres in Sassafras, Lyn Gubbins said she loved seeing Mr Batt and Emma walk past her shop every day.

“He just makes me so happy,” Ms Gubbins said.

“I love to give Emma a pat every morning and it just brightens your day.

“Emma is such a gorgeous dog.”

Ms Gubbins said Mr Batt was a lovely man.

“He’s around the same age as my dad, and he is just so friendly and he really does make you smile every morning,” Ms Gubbins said.

THE residents of Cardinia have important decisions to make in the next few weeks about their representatives for the next four years.

Congratulations to the Upper Beaconsfield Association for conducting a Meet the Candidates for Ranges Ward.

It was enlightening and demonstrated the contrasts between candidates.

Seven of the nine candidates presented - two current councillors, three former councillors and two first-time candidates.

Ranges Ward has been very well served over the past four years by representatives who understand community consultation, listen and think before making decisions.

While Cr Baxter has decided not to recontest, Leticia Wilmot and Brett Owen deserve continued support.

One of the former councillors wants to separate from Cardinia, but has not undertaken the most elementary analysis of the viability of the idea, or if it would get the required State Government support.

A better approach would be to forget about running for council at this time and do the required work.

Building takes much more skill than demolishing and Cardinia needs people who want to build the future.

The other two former councillors want to return to the past.

How can we forget that they led the decision of previous council, without quality consultation, to buy the land of a private club for about $4 million and lease it back for 50 years at $1 per annum.

The benefits to ratepayers have been minimal, if any.

There are important differences between representation and good community consultation.

The first-time candidates who presented were David Phillips and Shoheli Sunjida.

They both presented well and demonstrated their capacity to listen and consult.

Neither has much experience of local government, but if elected are likely to develop their

knowledge of local government very quickly.

We all want good representation.

Now is our chance to set the direction for the next four years.

We can go forward with people who want to build the future, or go back to the past.

Give you a tip MY PARTNER and I were going for a jog in Sherbrooke forest on Friday, 30 September (AFL Grand Final day public holiday).

We don’t usually park at Grants Picnic Ground, due to it being busy on weekends and public holidays.

However, it wasn’t too busy when we drove past and decided to enter.

We were shocked as we drove in and the first thing you could see were rubbish bins overflowing, directly in front of the cafe.

The picnic ground had no less than four coaches and tourists walking around.

Being locals, we felt very embarrassed.

This is the first thing overseas visitors see when they arrive at our beautiful forest.

Surely a busy cafe and gift shop could use a dumpster-style bin and store it off to the side.

I really think more of an effort could be made.

Need more time WHILE I believe that Mr (Paul) O’Halloran’s assessment of the impact of the proposed C148 Amendment (‘Call for more time’, ‘Mail’, 4 October) is somewhat astray, I believe he is absolutely correct in arguing for more time.

The process and supporting ‘information’ pack for this amendment is confused and unclear and provides both incoherent and insufficient information on the nature of the change.

I am particularly concerned at the rather ‘siloed’ approach taken to the engagement of ‘Ecology Australia’ to undertake a native vegetation inventory (which is the basis of the changes proposed in the C148 Amendment) without any consideration of the bushfire modelling being undertaken by the Department of Environment, Land and Water and Planning, or the collective emergency services, nor any of the other complex strategic overlays necessary to ensure a sound and sustainable strategic planning approach to securing the economic, social and environmental fundamentals for the future of the communities of the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

The work of ‘Ecology Australia’ in mapping remnant and valuable native vegetation and habitat is invaluable, but not when it is considered in isolation.

I believe it is very telling that a review of the candidates for local government in my own ward of Stretton sees no candidate willing to speak against some of the more extreme environmental views which truly underpin the C148 agenda.

Intelligent, clear-thinking people with a commitment to a truly 'sustainable future’ for the Shire of Yarra Ranges have had neither the time nor the appropriate background information to be providing clear and considered input into the C148 process, but one suspects that that was

Stay on Watch I AM not happy with the (Victorian) Government’s cuts to the Neighbourhood Watch Program.

Neighbourhood Watch is a community-based crime prevention program that assists communities in the Yarra Ranges to work together and keep residents safe.

The timing is a blow for Neighbourhood Watch Week, which started 3 October.

Daniel Andrews and Police Minister Lisa Neville have slashed funding for Neighbourhood Watch, leaving it with only a part-time acting CEO and a part-time administration person.

The former full-time CEO, Gill Metz, was forced to resign after funding was withdrawn by the State Government recently.

Neighbourhood Watch aims to improve the quality of life within a neighbourhood by minimising preventable crime and promoting closer community ties.

The program relies on the community, volunteers and the police working together in a partnership to achieve these aims.

I have in the past chaired the AGM for the Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch and found them to be a great bunch of people who care about their community and others safety.

We need organisations like Neighbourhood Watch because they support our police efforts and promote a sense of community.

The police force needs this support to work effectively in protecting our safety at home and on the street.

We should not see Neighbourhood Watch as a past its day program but an integral part of our community safety and volunteer spirit.

It still burns HAVING been a CFA volunteer for 45 years, I share Rob Pitcher’s attachment to the CFA (‘Face fire facts’, ‘Mail’, 4 October, 2016).

However, I am greatly concerned that the VFBV (Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria) has been stirring up community concern for purely Liberal Party political purposes.

They have grossly misrepresented parts of the EBA. Firstly, it would be appropriate for Rob to quote from the latest, now agreed, version of the EBA. Note that seven are to be dispatched (only at integrated stations) and will be turned back if not required.

Many clauses (that affect paid firefighters only) require UFU (United Firefighters Union) consultation, but do ‘not’ give the UFU any power to veto.

A volunteer caller to talkback radio from a small brigade in the Otways said that "None of this EBA stuff affects us in anyway. We couldn’t care less. The VFBA does not represent our views".

I suggest that Gembrook brigade would be similar.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

The issues that are most important for me in this election is that the boundary lines have changed for Billanook. If I am successful at becoming re-elected, my issue will be to maintain and build my relationships with all the volunteer community groups and residents who now fall under Billanook Ward.

I will continue to focus on lowering costs and delivering services. I will effectively advocate addressing issues that are raised with me.

COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2016 - YARRA RANGES

MIKE CLARKE Lyster Ward Ferny Creek Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

I would like to continue to be involved with the whole community to help and resolve issues to make lives easier and better and continue the unfinished activities I have undertaken in the last 18 months that I’ve been on council.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

Improving road maintenance standards, getting Special Charge Schemes to be affordable and acceptable to residents wanting roads sealed, advocating for a new bus transport system throughout the Dandenongs and surrounds that supports public transport needs, tourist needs, promotes eco-tourism, supports an evacuation plan in emergency situations, with overall outcomes of reducing traffic congestion and parking pressures. A high priority is to protect our environment by removing weeds, replanting and restoring damaged areas, appropriate fuel reduction, encouraging energy saving technologies, renewable energy sources and dealing with climate change and emergency planning.

KRISTOPHER RECKE Tecoma Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

I’m running on three points - I want some more transparent councillors - we need to hold our councillors; Many people don’t know who our current councillor is, and that’s an issue they need resolved - they don’t know who to turn to and I want to change that; I also believe that the council needs to be held more accountable for some of our major planning decisions.

I think we need to promote sustainable development in the Dandenong Ranges, especially around the townships of Belgrave and Tecoma. It brings money in and has a flow on effect.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

One thing that I’ve found when speaking to a lot of people is that we’ve got a brilliant musical community that’s received next to no support from local council. One of the things I’d be pushing for us to get a council-sponsored platform for local artists, to sort-of get exposure and provide contact details and help them get that first step out there, in the style of Triple J Unearthed - why not have a Yarra Ranges Unearthed.

CATHERINE KEIL Olinda Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

I am running for council elect because I’m passionate about our community and protecting our unique environment.

I will bring a strong focus on biodiversity, community networking, accountable rates expenditure and I will pursue solutions and outcomes to address local concerns, for example, air quality and safety on our local roads.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

There are many answers that come to mind regarding important issues in this election, however a couple stand out, the quality of community living and the environment around us. I believe we have a precious and delicate hills environment.

The need to protect our wildlife and address the invasive weeds issue. It’s time to give the community a stronger voice.

DAVID FRANCIS Streeton Ward Olinda Why are you running to be a Councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

It’s time the community has someone with energy who will listen to their issues and followup on solutions. I am ethical and honest and I have experience as an environmental engineer giving high level advice to councils and water and energy authorities to increase their efficiency. I will hold the council accountable to deliver the services our community needs.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

I love living in the Yarra Ranges and I want to see more of the services expected in the city to be available here too.

More council rates need to go toward supporting: action on homelessness, senior citizens, footpaths, parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities, waterways, weed management and protecting our unique environment, local tourism businesses, bike tracks, sealing high usage gravel roads, lobbying the State Government for better public transport services, and solar and other renewables.

NOEL CLIFF Macclesfield Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

Because I feel I’ve got the skills, now, that I can contribute to what people want. It’s about people for me - providing for what people need in their dayto-day lives.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

It’s trying to keep costs down for the average person.

Things are a bit tough in the economy and I think the trick is to make sure we won’t put any more stress on their lives through finances and charges.

And keeping the services they want, keep them up to date, so they don’t have that extra stress during this time of their lives.

Why should your ward’s residents vote for you?

I’d like to think that my past track record, I hope, represents some examples of how good I’ve done and admittedly, there’ve been some spots where I could improve, but overall I think I’ve done a pretty damn good job of looking after people during my time with council.

BILL BRINDLE Tecoma Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council?

I am running because I feel that our side of the mountain is neglected by what is patently a Lilydale centric local government. This has been the case since the old Shire of Sherbrooke disappeared.

What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?

Strengthening community through the active support of our volunteers, targeting wasteful spending and the hubris which allows $28 million to be spent on new council buildings whilst our services are reduced.

Reinforcing the fact that council is meant to serve the community. A fact they seem to have forgotten.

Agro products and services UNDER the enthusiastic guidance of newly appointed president, William Anker, the organising committee of the Wandin-Silvan Field Days is busily planning and preparing this year’s event, in anticipation of building upon past successes.

Now in its 47th year, they look forward to welcoming exhibitors and visitors from across the country to this significant local community event.

The Wandin-Silvan Field Days continues as a not-for-profit organisation, operated and run by a committee of local volunteers, some of whom have a history of involvement, dating back to the first event.

The Field Days foster community involvement, with local schools and community groups providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity.

The 2016 Wandin-Silvan Field Days will again provide an opportunity for exhibitors to present a diverse range of horticultural, agricultural and lifestyle products and services; as well as information and demonstrations, directly to patrons.

They actively encourage the participation of relevant exhibitors who are able to support our theme.

From general farm machinery, light industrial equipment, motor vehicles and motor bikes through to irrigation equipment, water tanks, pest and weed control, fertilisers, chemicals, and fruit packaging and labelling ... the opportunities are endless!

Mad Max has grunt to burn MAD Max, the twin supercharged burn-out machine, will make a rare appearance at the Wandin Silvan Field Days this year.

The V12 Detroit engine was taken out of a massive tugboat and used initially as a dynotester.

Mad Max’s creator, Peter Humphris, decided the beast of a machine would make a formidable burn-out vehicle.

So, inspired by the 1980s movie with Mel Gibson, Peter designed a simple, yet incredibly tough machine that would withstand any conditions and do one of the biggest burn-outs known to mankind.

Mad Max will be part of the 600 Engineering display at the Field Days and kids can have their photo taken while sitting on the death-defying machine.

They can experience the excitement when its earth-shaking V-12 engine starts revving.

Pictured is the Mad Max burn-out vehicle, which was inspired by the film of the same name.

OUTDOORS lovers are being encouraged this month to get out and explore ‘The Secret Gardens of the Dandenong Ranges’.

A limited number of guests can explore some of the most beautiful privately owned gardens in the region.

Exclusive, expert guided tours will run from Monday 17 to Friday, 21 October, with only 50 places offered per day.

Also, the tours offer ‘backstage access’ to secret statues, workshops and more at renowned public gardens.

Among the gardens included

at this year’s event are Beechmont (Olinda), Mernda Heights (Olinda), The Crescent Gardens (Sassafras), Hillangully Homestead (Olinda), Nobelius (Emerald) and Shirley Carn’s Native Australian Garden (Monbulk).

Private presentations will be given by well-known sustainability pioneer Joost Bakker, Phil Johnson, Norma Berry and others in their own gardens.

The only major problems with Miss Peregrine’s are how flat Butterfield is as a lead actor, and how woefully muddled the rules regarding the school timeloops and the Hollow monsters are.

Overall, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is an engaging, visually stunning and highly entertaining comeback for Tim Burton.

Stonefield - which includes sisters Amy (vocals, drums), Hannah (guitar), Sarah (keyboard) and Holly (bass) - have just released their second album and will perform at Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge, on Sunday 16 October.

Despite ‘“jamming” together since their early teens, and

developing into a renowned allsister act, Findlay says it simply feels natural for the siblings to play music together.

Hannah told the Mail they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It sounds lame but we’re still each other’s best friend,” she said.

Rain delays start to season

By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION for cricketers FRUSTRATIONS around the Yarra Valley as significant early spring rains put a halt to ground preparations for the upcoming cricket season.

The large amount of unprepared grounds across the Yarra Ranges Council forced an early cancellation of the first round of cricket for the Yarra Valley Cricket Association and their neighbouring associations.

The 2016-'17 season shapes as an intriguing one in the YVCA’s top two grades, DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy, after both competitions experienced an extremely competitive and close fought season in 2015-'16.

Woori Yallock will be the team to chase in DJ Strachan Shield as they seek a hat-trick of premierships in the top grade.

The loss of reigning THR Drummond Medallist, and the competition’s leading batsman and bowler, Daniel Mock, will leave a considerable hole within their line-up.

But the form of the likes of Ryan Smith, Simon Young, Jackson Wright and Ben Hayes at the peak of their powers, and a side full of consistent performers, still puts them at the head of the pack.

Hot on their heels will be the teams they conquered in the past two seasons, Healesville and Warburton-Millgrove.

The Bloods rode a wave of great form post Christmas last season, which led them to a competitive showing in the grand final.

The Bloods will be hoping they’ll be led well by Ash Hamer, whose form late last season drove the Bloods’ charge.

Healesville have recruited some disciplined, experienced cricketers over recent seasons and, in addition to their developing youngsters, there is no reason why they won’t be around the mark this season.

Warburton-Millgrove probably boast the most experienced team in the top flight and they will rely on this experience to expose their opposition, particularly in the challenging two-day format.

Led by the talented Lever brothers - David, Daniel and Ben - the trio will be well supported by the likes of Liam Barnard in their quest to reach the pinnacle once again.

Mount Evelyn and Yarra Junction fought it out to make finals last season and both teams will be keen to take the next step.

Mount Evelyn regains the services of Kane Jones.

His partnership with Gareth Fraser

will be crucial for both middle-order runs and match-winning wickets.

The Rovers have a raft of talented teens searching for consistency.

If a few of these can back up the efforts of Jones and Fraser, then they could surprise.

Yarra Junction could prove to be the big movers in 2016-'17 as last season would’ve stung the Eagles.

With Quinton Hodgkinson and Cam Spaulding atop their batting order, the Eagles can boast an explosive force early in their innings.

Marcus Hottes proved a valuable foil for the pair last season as he rarely failed in keeping things together early.

The keys for the Eagles are getting enough wickets and some late order runs to complement their stars.

Rounding out the field of starters for DJ Strachan Shield are Seville and Yarra Glen.

Seville were exposed last year with the loss of many key premiership heroes, but the young side weren’t disgraced as they put vital time into their youngsters.

Matt Hadlum is a force with the ball.

With several handy players with the ball, the Blues were able to restrict their opponents to chaseable totals, but their biggest challenge came with

making enough runs.

All eyes will be on Yarra Glen as they rise back to the premier competition after over a decade in the lower grades.

They have been quietly going about their business developing and building an impressive array of young talent and may surprise a few if they are underestimated.

With former Victorian Bushranger Brendan Ricci at the helm, and with the experience of John Orren with the ball, then anything could happen with the competition’s ‘New Kids on the Block’.

With a late finish to the football season, cricket has struggled to find some front page space.

All clubs across the Yarra Valley are looking for keen cricketers of all ages and abilities.

Season 2016-17 saw the introduction of Under 10s cricket, which proved quite popular on a Friday evening, while most clubs are looking to fill their ranks in the Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s ranks.

Several clubs within the Yarra Valley also offer the entry-level program for beginning cricketers, Milo ‘In2Cricket’, which is aimed out our 5-8 year old cricketers which most clubs kick off in early November.

There are many options for the se-

nior cricketers of all ages and abilities also; from the top grades to the social friendly lower grades and one-day grades to suit most cricketers.

What better way to spend some father-son time, than to share a game of cricket on a Saturday afternoon.

To keep everyone catered for, the Yarra Valley have established teams in the Over 40s, Over 50s and Over 60s, which opens the possibility for cricketers to return to the game they love, or an opportunity to start a childhood dream of playing cricket.

Mount Evelyn Cricket Club also offers Over 40s and Over 60s teams.

If playing isn’t your scene, there are plenty of other options including umpiring.

The YVCA Umpires Association is always looking for more members to help assist in the running of the games on a Saturday.

A win to Steve in the sun

By Dennis Fuller EMERALD GOLF THE first round of the three-round championship was played at Emerald Golf Club with the ‘big shiny’ warming the cockles of the golfers’ hearts.

With his chipper singing beautiful music, it was Steve Town (13) who showed the way to those lagging behind with his 81 off the beater, which translated into a leading nett score of 68.

Unfortunately for his championship aspirations, he will be away basking in northern sun next week and will be unable to push for his first win.

Of those in his wake, it was left to Allan Ecclestone (24) to show the way for gross 93 and a nett 69.

This put him at the head of the B Grade crew and looking a whole lot like a winner.

In A Grade, Peter Glasscock (13) was next with a gross 84, while Ross

Martin (13) ever the challenger with 85 and a swish of golfer on 87 including Ken Hill, Dean Shannon and Peter Clowes.

In B Grade, Ben Balfour and Philip Crossley both had a gross 98 Broc Reynolds, returning from a break, scored poorly but dominated the nearest the pins.

He was nearest on the 12th, 13th and the pro pin 18th.

Glasscock was nearest on the 4th

Moto-vated Mason brings it home Mason said he was overjoyed by his two victories.

“I’m very happy winning both titles,” he said.

“I was just happy winning one title, but winning two titles just tops it off.

“In the 250cc 13-u15 class, I won the first three finals and in the fourth final I had a bit of a crash, which knocked me around a bit, but I got back to fourth place in that one.

“My Motorex KTM Factory Junior Racing team-mate Rhys Budd and I were just two points apart.

“I was in the lead going into the last race.

“I knew I had to win so I went out, tried my best and I won the championship in that class.

“In the 125dd 13-u15 class, we had over 40 riders, and I qualified third in

the two heats.

“In the first final, I just tried to ride my best and I got third in that one. I knew I had to win the last two to win the championship so I just went out and tried to do my best and I did and got the championship.”

The Riverland Motorcycle Club hosted hundreds of riders and their families during seven days of competition and had to contend with tumultuous weather conditions which halted the competition when a massive storm hit South Australia on Wednesday, 28 September.

“On Wednesday night, we got a lot of rain so the track got too wet and we had Thursday off,” he said.

“On Friday, we got to ride again, and the more riding we did the better the track got.

“The track was awesome all week really, as was the competition.

“Both Budd and Duffy were flying.”

HODDLES Creek champion Mason Semmens impressively claimed two national titles at last week’s 2016 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championships in Renmark, South Australia, from 24 September to 1 October.

During a week of intense and exciting competition, Mason not only claimed one but two national championships in the 100-125cc 13-u15 years class and the 128-150cc/200-250cc 13u15 years class.

The 15-year-old won the hotly-contested 125cc 13-u15 year class by five points over Rhys Budd from NSW and Regan Duffy from Western Australia.

The results were mirrored in the 250cc 13-u15 year class, with Mason winning by five points again over Budd in second place and Duffy in third place.

There, race fans will watch fast and furious dirt track action at the venue that will this season hold two of the biggest Victorian titles of the season: the Street Stocks and the Standard Saloons on the speedway proper, plus the popular and entertaining Crash and Bash Victorian title through the dirt circuit dog leg section of the track.

Early entries for the first event of the season suggest a couple of Standard Saloon competitors from the states North East are heading into the venue to get early runs into their engines and some track time at the title venue, while some new competitors to Street Stocks have entered in order to get laps under the belt early in the season.

Alexandra Club members Nick Chrystie, Jason Meakins, Allan Poole and Tegan Bullard will need to bring their best form to compete with Corowa racer Brendan Eames, who last season had a great qualifying run at the Victorian title and Wangaratta’s Andrew Robl who can win against strong competition and is searching for consistency this season and a strong title result at Alexandra later in the year.

Lenny Bates and Debbie Jones lead the local members in the Street Stocks with Bates a serious contender for a number of big race results this season fresh off a trip to Western Australia where he started his season.

The ever-popular national division Junior Sedans for 10-year-olds up to 17 years of age once again looks set to have a large field on most occasions this season. Beveridge youngster Caleb Lincoln, Ricky Cornwall, Tim Gorski from Epping, Kilmore racer Courtney Meakins and Kasey Garlick are among the strong contenders.

Competition begins at 4pm on Saturday 15 October at Gordon Street Alexandra with adult tickets for this meeting costing $20, aged and invalid pensioners $15.

Children between the ages of 10 and 16 are $10 with a family ticket of two adults and three children above the age of 10 and 16 can enter for $60.

Corolla blooms true to name TOYOTA’S Corolla will achieve a major milestone this month as the world’s most popular car celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Introduced to Japan in October 1966 as the ‘people’s car’, cumulative global sales of Corolla have grown to more than 44 million.

The global sales tally equates to about 100 cars being built and sold every hour throughout the past half a century, or one every 36 seconds.

Australia has featured prominently in Corolla’s history since local sales began in 1967 - the destination for the first Corolla exports, the site of the first factory outside Japan to build this popular model, and the scene of its earliest international motorsport success at Bathurst.

Corolla has been Australia’s bestselling car in each of the past three years and cumulative local sales have now reached more than 1.35 million cars.

Corolla, which became the world’s best-selling automotive nameplate in 1997, accounts for one in five vehicles sold in Toyota’s 79-year history and a slightly higher proportion in Australia.

Currently produced at 16 plants worldwide, more than one million units have been sold each year since 2002.

Last year, a total of 3670 Corollas were sold every day across more than 150 countries and regions.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said local motorists had made Corolla the company’s top-selling model in this country.

“Australians have always loved Corolla because it has continually captured their imagination by being affordable, fuel-efficient, dependable and fun to drive through each of its 11 generations,“ Mr Cramb said.

One month after Corolla’s debut, the first export shipment of 15 cars left

Japan bound for Australia in November 1966 and went on sale here the following year.

From 1968 until 1999, more than 666,000 Corolla cars were built in Toyota factories at Port Melbourne, Dandenong and Altona in Melbourne.

Corolla has a long and successful motorsport record in Australia, helping to forge the car’s reputation as durable, reliable and fun to drive.

Class victories at the Bathurst 500 enduro in 1968 and 1969 effectively put Corolla on the motorsport map.

It won a further eight consecutive class victories at Bathurst from 1985'92 and compiled a string of touringcar victories and success in rallying.

Corolla’s sales have grown from strength to strength in Australia.

It took more than eight years for the first 100,000 Corollas to be sold after its introduction in 1967.

The most recent 100,000 sales took just over two years and four months.

Annual sales reached 20,000 for the first time in 1975, climbed through the 30,000 mark in 2000 and topped the 40,000 milestone in 2005.

Corolla became a ‘millionaire’ in Australia in September 2007 with total sales moving into seven figures four months after the model’s 40th anniversary in Australia.

Originating from the Latin term for “crown of flowers“, the name Corolla was chosen in the hope the vehicle would bloom in the automotive market.

And that’s exactly what it did: within three years the first-generation Corolla became the top-selling vehicle in Japan, and sales quickly spread around the world.

In-depth analysis and the incorporation of customer feedback have been integral to the development of each new generation of Corolla.

As a result, Toyota has built on the philosophy behind the creation of the

first Corolla - a car of superior quality, durability and reliability (QDR) - with a determination to exceed customer expectations in every key area highlighted by their feedback.

The result is that today’s Corolla hatch and sedan inherit 50 years of Corolla DNA in always evolving and being designed to meet the diverse needs of a global customer base.

Drivers need excise advice A NEW study by Transurban which tested consumer reactions to different road charging options has reinforced the need for the Australian Government to advise motorists how much excise they pay on every tank of fuel.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) chief executive Michael Bradley said: “This important study by Transurban shows Australians are more open to considering changes to the way we pay for the transport we all need, once they know how much they currently pay in Australian Government motoring taxes.

“The Transurban study again demonstrates that the majority of Australian motorists are unaware they pay around 40 cents in excise on every litre of fuel.

That’s why the AAA is calling for the Australian Government to disclose the amount of excise paid on fuel dockets in the same way GST is currently displayed.”

The Transurban study also highlights the fact that so little of what motorists pay goes into building transport infrastructure, and that over time, the amount

of money available to the government from fuel excise will fall.

In 2013-'14, road-related taxes and charges reached almost $28 billion. Despite this, motorists are getting a very poor return on their investment.

Over recent decades, only 47 per cent of the tax paid by motorists at the bowser has found its way into the federal land transport infrastructure budget.

By 2020, this figure will be down to 27 per cent.

“We already have a massive shortfall in transport infrastructure funding and this will only worsen as the amount of fuel excise collected drops due to improved vehicle efficiency and the increased use of electric vehicles,” Mr Bradley said.

“The AAA’s Transport Affordability Index shows the average Australian household is already paying around $17,000 a year for transport. It’s important therefore that governments find new and fairer ways to ensure we can fund the transport systems Australia will need for the 21st century. A great place to start is by ensuring Australians understand

exactly how much they already pay in fuel excise.”

The AAA believes a two-stage funding reform approach is required that would first secure a dedicated and stable source of revenue to be directed to land transport projects and second, to examine, develop and implement options for broader land transport market reform.

On this basis, the AAA calls for the Australian Government to: Set up a transport infrastructure fund, with a guaranteed minimum of 50 per cent of net fuel excise paid into the fund to be spent on land transport infrastructure. This policy is supported by around 90 per cent of Australians surveyed by the AAA. Implement Infrastructure Australia’s recommendation for a public inquiry into transport market reform and how it moves in the long term to a system that replaces current taxes with a fairer road user pricing mechanism. This inquiry is the critical next step in developing a funding model capable of building the transport system Australia needs for the 21st century.
