By CASEY NEILL Gary Castricum has either lived or worked in Dandenong for his entire life – almost 60 years.

“Between my mother and my wife, I’ve shopped at Dandenong Market for all of my life,” he said.

“My mother always shopped there on a Tuesday and now my wife shops there on Tuesdays.

“I’ve only ever eaten for all of my life fresh produce from Dandenong Market.

“It’s a terrific place to shop for fresh goods.

“It’s an exciting place because of the cultural mix.

“I like just walking around there.

You feel like you’re anywhere in the world.

“The market is a real attraction I think, to the city.”

Mr Castricum lives in Berwick but travels to Dandenong to eat out, from Afghani to Indian, Asian and more.

“That’s where I prefer to go.

It’s ridiculously cheap as well,” he said.

“It has great cafes so when I meet people these days, I meet them in Dandenong.

“When they come along they go ‘wow!’.”

He lists Young Uncles, Ginger Jones, Beletti and Melissa’s among his favourite meeting points.

“Dandenong is a great place to meet people and catch up with people,” he said.

“It’s the capital of the southeast, it’s really the centre of the south-east.

“It has fantastic transport connections.

“The employment prospects are pretty good.

“Job opportunities in Dandenong are better than almost anywhere in the south-east.”

Mr Castricum said Dandenong’s people were very enthusiastic about their suburb and surrounds.

“The great thing about Dandenong is the cultural mix,” he said.

“That’s really its highlight.”

He said Dandenong was the place to shop for furniture and had all the services he needed, from lawyers to accountants and beyond.

“Dandenong’s really, really convenient from that point of view. It’s all there,” he said.

He said the CBD was becoming busier - in a positive fashion.

“The city’s been so significantly revitalised,” he said.

“We’re seeing so much life coming back to the centre of the city.”

OFFICER OPENS UP The once sleepy suburb of Officer is being transformed into a vibrant, commercial and residential hub attracting first, second and third home buyers who are looking for their slice of real estate heaven.
