Ford’s doors close

By Luke Voogt ABOUT 200 people are set to lose their jobs today (Friday) as Geelong’s Ford factory grinds to a close after 90 years in operation.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) Victorian Secretary Paul Difelice said the employees would need all the assistance they could get.

“It’s a very, very sad day that such an icon is going.”

“Ford is probably one of the very few companies that built from the ground up in Australia - all that technology and expertise is going to be lost.”

Mr Difelice said Ford had done its utmost to help workers transition to new jobs since announcing the closure in May 2013 He praised the previous Federal Government for establishing the $5.25 million Auto Skills Australia project.

The current Federal Govern-

ment has also allocated millions of dollars to Geelong in job creation programs.

Mr Difelice said AMWU had developed an outreach centre for former workers which will open next Monday.

Since Ford announced the Geelong and Broadmeadows closures it has or will re-employ 160 workers, a company spokesperson said.

Bell Park’s Brendan Sexton will continue working for the company at its Lara proving ground.

Mr Sexton joined Ford after it posted record sales in 1985. “I was working at the Pancake Kitchen, I think,” he said.

“If someone had told me when I was 20 I’d be at Ford for 32 years, I’d have looked at them as if they were stupid.”

For Mr Sexton the highlights of working at the plant were meeting new mates and “learning something new every day”.

JP slams system: there’s little justice and no peace

By Luke Voogt The “revolving door” Victorian legal system is letting down local officers a Geelong Police Station insider has said following a recent crime surge.

Mick Robinson, who has worked behind the counter as a JP at Geelong Police Station since 2006, said lenient sentencing was letting criminals off.

“The amount of people you see coming in each day to write in the book - oh my goodness!

“You look at their list of crimes and you think how do they let them back out on the street again?”

Mr Robinson was shocked to read last Friday that overall crime had increased in Geelong by 20 per cent in the past financial year.

“When you have people talking about setting up squads to police the streets themselves, we have a very bad problem, don’t we,” he said.

Mr Robinson said he had the greatest respect for police but said the legal system did not support them.

“I can’t speak for the police but this must just break their hearts. From where I’ve been sitting I’ve seen them do everything right.”

Mr Robinson said repeat criminals - especially youth - were increasingly defying police.

“Anyone under 16 the police will take them on, nothing will happen, they will keep repeating and go on to become hardened criminals.”

Mr Robinson recalled seeing a group of young men in his street in Newcomb, whose supervisor said were meant to be working on a communitybased order.

He said the supervisor told him he had no power to make the group work.

In Brief Bellarine fire A Clifton Springs mother and her newborn narrowly avoided injury during a house fire on Tuesday.

The woman ran from the house clutching the baby after hearing an explosion in the garage while her partner ran back into the house to salvage some of their possessions.

Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard would not comment on the judicial system, saying it was a matter for community discussion not the police.

However he conceded Geelong had seen a significant rise in crime in the past financial year.

Supt Gillard said police had made significant gains since 30 June, the end recording date for Crime Statistics Agency’s most recent crime data.

He said Geelong Police Station had focussed on burglary and theft, which recorded 37 per cent increases in the last financial year.

The station established a new high volume crime team after receiving 17 new custody officers in the past few months, Supt Gillard said.

The custody officers were making a huge difference by freeing up uniform police and detectives, he said.

“They are incredibly active in doing their job.”

However Supt Gillard stressed the community also could help.

For example, he said, 51 per cent of local car thefts had occurred because of people leaving doors unlocked.

“It’s not victim blaming - it’s making people far less likely to be victims.”

Supt Gillard welcomed Police Minister Lisa Neville’s announcement of 15 police for Geelong and the Bellarine earlier this year.

“Give us more police and we’ll detect more crimes and arrest more people,” he said.

However Supt Gillard said he had not received formal advice on when Geelong would receive new officers.

Roadwork urgent The State Government urgently needs to duplicate Barwon Heads Road with funds from the Port of Melbourne lease, a local Opposition MP says.

South Barwon MP Andrew said that the roadworks for the Warralily town centre highlighted the “urgent need”.

“Traffic was reduced to one lane over the previous weekend which caused significant delays of up to 15 to 20 minutes. From this Wednesday the Barwon Heads Road at Warralily will be closed entirely for five days in both directions.”

Mr Katos welcomed the government’s announcement on Tuesday that it would commit $970m from the Port of Melbourne lease to rural infrastructure.

“Armstrong Creek is one the largest growth areas in Victoria with 55,000 people and 22,000 homes,” he said.

A spokesperson for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the government had always intended to allocate 10 per cent of the money from the lease to regional projects. He said the government would consider projects carefully rather than rushing to spend the windfall.

City Hall is again giving one local child the chance to light up Geelong’s Floating Tree this Christmas.

The council will open a colouring competition this weekend as part of the launch of its Light Up Geelong campaign.

General manager of Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford said this year’s activities will be the most spectacular so far.

Improvements to the tree include 3D LED tubes that can create shapes and patterns in the sky, he said.

Victoria Police Academy will run at capacity as the State Government strives to recruit frontline police by June 2017, Police Minister Lisa Neville has said.

“We aren’t wasting a second in making sure Victoria Police has the resources it needs to cope with growing demand for police,” she said.

Administrators’ report The City’s administrators spruiked their performance to the Victorian Government in their latest quarterly report on Tuesday.

Chief Administrator Chairwoman Dr Kathy Alexander said that “strengthening an ongoing two-way conversation with the community” had been a major priority.

State grant to jump start electric vehicle hub plan

About 400 workers continued their blockade of Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery on Thursday afternoon despite the company obtaining an injunction.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and Australian Workers Union (AWU) supported the blockade, which started on Wednesday morning due to safety concerns.

Refinery general manager Thys Heyns described the blockade as illegal and “related to terms and conditions” not safety.

“Reporting safety incidents is encouraged at the refinery and a demonstration of a robust safety culture.”

Mr Heyns said action was delaying a major maintenance project ensuring the refinery could operate in the future and “support hundreds of manufacturing jobs in Geelong”.

“You can’t run a successful business without being a safe business so it just doesn’t add up that we would jeopardise this important outcome,” he said.

However AWU Victorian secretary Ben Davis said Viva had failed to engage “genuinely” with the workforce and the unions about safety concerns.

“Hopefully that attitude will change,” he said.

“Courts don’t fix disputes, workplace negotiations fix disputes.”

Mr Davis said the unions would seek legal advice over continuing the blockade and would discuss it with the employees onsite.

“We’re proud to be rebuilding much needed confidence in the renewable energy industry while providing jobs for automotive assembly workers,” she said.

“There is now a future for manufacturing in Geelong.”

Ms D’Ambrosio said the company would use the facility to create electric power pack systems to convert existing trucks from diesel to electric.

She said the long-term aim of the project was to develop an innovative range of electric powered commercial vehicles.

“This remarkable project will cement Victoria as an electric vehicle powerhouse.”

The company was one of the first grant recipients of the Andrews government’s $20 million New Energy Jobs Fund.

In 1926, Ford finished construction on its now iconic Geelong plant.

The company went on to make history in 1934 when it produced the world’s first ute.

The ground-breaking design followed a letter from a farmer who wanted a vehicle “I can take my pigs to market in during the week and my wife to church on Sunday”.

The plant would go on to build tens of thousands of different models, and was pivotal in supplying Australia’s armed services during World War II. The company has sponsored the Geelong Cats for 91 years and will continue to do so until at least 2020.

While Ford has found work for some, others will struggle, he said.

“In some ways they’ve done a good job trying to accommodate everybody. (Ford employees) have a lot of knowledge and skills, but often they don’t have a bit of paper to reflect it.”

However Mr Difelice said Ford had striven in the plant’s final weeks to ensure workers received qualifications.

“There are a lot of incentives out there for companies to hire Ford workers and a lot of them have been snapped up,” he said.

Ford began manufacturing in Geelong when its first Australian-built car rolled off a makeshift, 12-metre assembly line on 1 July 1925.

Geelong could become a hub for commercial electric vehicles with a State Government grant securing a new factory.

Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced the $516,720 grant for SEA Automotive to build the first stage of the facility on Wednesday.

SEA managing director Glenn Baird said there would “great potential” for the company to work with local suppliers and existing automotive firms in Geelong.

“This grant provides tremendous support in terms of establishing our assembly operations.”

Mr Baird said advances in technology had made commercial electric vehicles economically

viable compared to their fuel-driven rivals.

“Batteries are now 30 per cent cheaper than what they were five years ago,” he said.

Mr Baird also promoted the environmental benefits, saying electric vehicles produced zero carbon emissions and noise.

The firm would closely work with Deakin University to improve its technology, he added.

He declined to say where or when SEA planned to construct the facility but did say that the company expected to expand the facility beyond the first stage.

The government announcement coincided with the closure of Geelong Ford manufacturing plant this week after 90 years of operation.

Ms D’Ambrosio said the government expected the SEA project to create 80 jobs in Geelong over the next four years.

Geelong businesswoman Diana Taylor has made the finals of the Telstra Business Woman of the Year awards in the private and corporate category.

The lawyer and executive director of a local consultancy firm was honoured to make the finals.

“I’m so proud to represent Geelong to the rest of Australia,” she said.

Move secures school’s future

By Luke Voogt Oberon High School will relocate to the growth area of Armstrong Creek by 2018 following a State Government announcement this week.

Education Minister James Merlino and Geelong MP Christine Couzens visited the proposed site on Wednesday.

Mr Merlino said the move would help the government “meet the growing demand for local secondary schools in the area.”

He said the government would keep families informed and support them during the relocation.

Ms Couzens said the new school would replace the existing high school’s “out-dated 1960s” classrooms.

“Parents can now confidently enrol their kids at Oberon High School knowing its long-term future is secure,” she said.

The announcement came after a review into secondary school provision in Geelong’s south, which the Victorian School Building Authority released the same day.

It investigated enrolment demand for existing local government secondary schools in Geelong’s south, including Belmont High School, Oberon High School and Grovedale College.

According to the review, Armstrong Creek will boom over the next 20 years with an extra 7000 school-age residents living in the area by 2036.

The site will become home to a new P-6 primary school and P-12 special school, which will open in 2018.

However South Barwon MP Andrew Katos questioned the government’s decision to close Oberon High School.

“You could probably build a new school on the existing site for much less cost,” he said While Armstrong Creek had a definite need for a school, closing Oberon would put pressure on surrounding schools, the Liberal MP said.

He said Belmont High School, which was close to capacity, would need further investment to keep up with demand as a result of the move.

Mr Merlino and Ms Couzens also visited Roslyn Primary School as work began on a $2.186 million redevelopment of its facilities.

The redevelopment will include a new

main classroom wing, administration facilities and a multipurpose space.

“This is an exciting day for the Belmont community,” Ms Couzens said.

“It’s exciting to see work get underway on a new learning and administrative facility for the school.”

However Mr Katos said the government was taking credit for Coalition funding.

The previous government had made funding available for the project in its 2014/15 budget, he said.

“The students at Roslyn primary have had to wait two and a half years for James Merlino and Christine Couzens to do something with that money.”

A paedophile who taught at Geelong Grammar has evaded a new investigation after an inter-agency bungle let him return to Ireland, Fairfax has reported.

Victoria Police failed to flag its investigation to the Immigration Department before it deported him after serving a sentence in Queensland for child abuse. The new investigation centred on alleged incidents from the late 1960s to 1980.

The Irish citizen was accused in last year’s federal child abuse Royal Commission of fondling a preteen Geelong Grammar student while performing a sex act in church, stroking a six-year-old’s genitals in bed, and instructing senior students to perform sexual acts in underground rooms.

Victims now fear it could take years before the man, whose identity has been suppressed by the Royal Commission, faces justice. An extradition bid could also fail if the 74-year-old is deemed mentally or physically unfit to face trial in Australia.

CITY OF GREATER GEELONG SPECIAL CHARGE SCHEME THOMPSON ROAD NORTH GEELONG The Council of the City of Greater Geelong gives notice it is proposing to declare special charges at its meeting on Tuesday 22 November 2016 or subsequent meeting for the purposes of defraying expenses relating to the construction of a footpath along Thompson Road between Morgan Street and Cowies Creek, North Geelong The total estimated cost of the works is $198,395 and the special charge to be levied by Council is estimated at $64,295. The details of the proposed declaration and cost estimate may be inspected at the City of Greater Geelong, 100 Brougham Street Geelong, during office hours.

The distribution of charges between property owners is based on an access charge and amenity charge which is based on the frontage of the property to the works. The estimated amounts are shown in the following table.

Doggies’ victory makes fan’s day

Grovedale’s Mavis Govan was “still up on a cloud” Monday morning after her beloved “doggies” lifted the Premiership Cup this weekend.

“I couldn’t sleep all night,” she said.

The 89-year-old has followed Bulldogs her whole life, and was at the MCG for their first premiership in 1954.

Mavis was euphoric after the club broke its 62year drought.

“I only wish my husband and my son were here to see it,” she said.

Last Tuesday Mavis told the Indy about the heartbreak of Footscray’s 1962 premiership loss to Hawthorn and numerous preliminary final losses.

She was yelling at her TV with family and friends during the thrilling grand final Saturday afternoon.

“My heart was throbbing I can tell you,” she said.

Mavis watched in awe as Liam Picken took one of the marks of the year in the last quarter.

She was on the edge of her seat as the video umpire overturned Johannisen’s apparent matchwinning goal and Buddy Franklin got Sydney

to within a point. But after a goal from Picken, a 60-metre bomb from Tom Boyd and Picken’s match-sealer, Mavis could finally give her heart a rest.

“That’s when I thought we’ve got it won now,” she said.

Like many Bulldogs fans, Mavis shed a tear when Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge gave his medal to injured captain Bob Murphy.

“That was wonderful gesture,” she said.

While a few falls have prevented Mavis from making games this year, the 66-year club member hopes to again see her team live this next season.

In her yearly tradition, the great-grandmother will try to get to the club’s season launch, which she missed this year.

“Hopefully, my health is better next year,” she said.

The grand final left Mavis a little too exhausted to join more than 30,000 Bulldogs supporters at Whitten Oval as they welcomed the cup home.

“I didn’t think the ground could hold that many people,” she said.

“I think we’ll have a bigger following from now on.”

Jiu jitsu classes fight for self-respect A team of Geelong volunteers has been working to transform the lives of impoverished Balinese youth – through martial arts.

Geelong Brazilian jiu jitsu purple-belt Woon Ooi and Tasmanian co-founder Geoff Collins have been teaching martial arts in a makeshift Balinese gym for the past year.

Geoff said the classes helped children living in Balinese slums, who had a “lack of role models”.

“A lot of men in the community drink cheap moonshine and the kids lack opportunities,” he said.

“To be loved, respected and appreciated in a society that says you are the lowest of low... that must have a far deeper impact than even we can see.”

The pair came up with the idea after meeting in Bali in 2012.

At the time Woon was running the Red Frogs charity in Bali while Geoff was teaching boxing under a tree in a local slum.

Inspired by Geoff ’s example, Woon set up Geelong-based charity Akademi Kristus and started raising money for a gym. “(The charity’s) aim is to love and empower

each person... so that they can discover their confidence to rise up from their situation,” Woon said.

The charity completed the gym last year and since then has provided free classes in martial arts, creative arts and specialist disability education.

Geoff left behind his career to run classes with his Balinese wife Erma and their young family. He said Akademi Kristus was now his life.

His proudest moment was helping a nearby family whose sons had cerebral palsy, he said.

“When we told their parents that we wanted to start a specialist disability education class for them, their mother replied ‘why, all they do is laugh and cry’.

“By their second class they could count. These classes are now the highlight of their week and the attitude their family had towards them has completely changed,” he said.

Akademi Kristus will hold an official launch at North Geelong’s Mule Coffee Shed from 7pm on 15 October.

Letters Their own agenda Why have the administrators of Geelong Council made reducing our carbon emissions a priority?

(Indy 30/9).

Chief Administrator Dr Kathy Alexander wants to reduce the council’s emissions by 50 per cent.

Let me get this straight. The old council under flamboyant major Darren Lyons gets sacked for being allegedly dysfunctional yet no one in Geelong has voted in the administrators or given them a mandate to implement their green agenda.

I, for one, object to ratepayers’ money being squandered on expensive green policies which will, in the overall scheme of things, have no impact on the environment whatsoever.

Is this not being dysfunctional? How on earth can the administrators make council ‘carbon free’?

To do that they would have to divest themselves of all technology, vehicles and garbage trucks as all manufactured goods require the use of power intensive industries, especially solar panels and wind turbines which are usually manufactured in China.

All the administrators are doing is transferring their carbon emissions to another part of the globe.

And one last thing. Going ‘carbon free’ would require all employers, and administrators, to hold their breath as every breath exhaled means 40,000 ppm of carbon dioxide being emitted.

We deserve better than this. There must surely be other more pressing issues which should be engaging the administrators’ attention?

Stop this cop-out The Geelong community has been under siege in recent months with aggravated burglaries, ram raids and carjackings as police struggle to keep up with a rise in crime.

For two years Daniel Andrews has neglected to invest in police resources and we are now experiencing the fallout from his inactivity.

Weaseling out of responsibility Police Minister Lisa Neville has been consulting her book of placating expressions and weasel words again (Indy, 30 September). The six-year trend of increasing crime rates is, in fact, at least 11 years old.

In 2005 a community meeting was called in Torquay to discuss the fears of police and citizens that the town’s newly built police station would be inadequately staffed. Their fears proved well-founded.

Ms Neville and state counterpart Michael Crutchfield didn’t even bother turning up. Three of their Labor colleagues attended but one left part way through and the others are no longer in parliament.

In typical fashion, the leaders of the Liberal-National Federal Government blamed renewable energy for the problems caused by the unprecedented storm that blacked out Adelaide. Experts on the situation and even the South Australian Premier said the claims were absolute rubbish.

The federal Energy Minister also had the gall to suggest that state targets for renewable energy were too ambitious and must be more moderate so as not to risk energy security.

The greatest risk is continuing the pathetic renewable energy targets put forward by our current government.

Australian states are putting forward more-ambitious targets because they are utterly frustrated with the Federal Government lagging on this issue.

The South Australian storms, which included two tornadoes, were made worse by climate change.

The only logical reason the Turnbull Government has for taking it slow on alternative energy is that it’s supported by the fossil fuel industry, which is beginning to see its once-taken-for-granted profits under threat.

Although I doubt it, I think it’s a pity she didn’t attend the meeting because she just might have been made aware of the community’s fears. Now these fears have escalated to the extent that people can’t be sure of their safety in their homes, much less on the roads or even walking familiar streets.

The assurance of more police is a hollow promise. There have been no new recruits for some time.

The new ones to which Ms Neville referred to will need at least two years of recruiting and training before joining the ranks of our thin blue line, hopefully before it gets even thinner because of officers taking stress leave due to lack of real support.

By my estimates of the parliamentary system, these new officers will be paraded before us just in time to be used in the campaign for the next state election. How clever.

Work cycle’s road hurdle

By Luke Voogt Geelong has a “long way to go” to make its streets cycle-friendly, Bike Safe founder Barton van Laar has said this week.

Mr van Laar made the comments as City Hall promoted next Wednesday’s Ride2Work Day. “I fully support the day but if you want people to ride their bikes to work build the infrastructure to make it safer,” he said Mr van Laar said the council and VicRoads had done “some really good work” to improve infrastructure.

However he said the State Government had “hamstrung” council with its “Melbourne-centric” approach to cycle funding.

“Our region is about five per cent of the state’s population but we don’t get appropriate funding.”

Only 1.6 per cent of people ride to Geelong each morning, well below the national average of five per cent, Mr van Laar said.

“We’re still so far behind places Canberra, Noosa, Adelaide and Melbourne.”

Mr van Laar called for separated two-way bike paths in Moorabool and Malop streets, as well as better connections to the northern suburbs.

“The plans are already in place but there’s just not enough funding,” he said.

According to a US study, Mr van Laar said, “physical separation” would greatly increase cyclist numbers. This would less car traffic and road wear, he said.

The council’s acting general manager city services Vicki Shelton focused on the health benefits of riding, such as reducing obesity.

“We would like to see the number of cyclists grow and Ride2Work Day is a great motivator,” Ms Shelton said.

Ms Shelton said 61 per cent of people in a 2014 Ride2Work survey said they would continue to ride to work at least once a week.

She said 201km of shared paths in Greater Geelong made cycling a good choice in the municipality.

Cyclists were safer riding in groups and in areas where others cycle regularly, he said.

“If we have a familiarity with motorists they are more likely to see us regardless of what we are wearing.”

The 64-year-old Ocean Grove resident, who cycles 400km each week, said safety had improved dramatically in Geelong thanks to Bike Safe campaigning.

“Geelong has come quite far from being quite a threatening place to ride in terms of heavy vehicles and motorists who are hostile to cyclists.”

Mr Burtt praised the council and VicRoads for standardising approaches to roundabouts and sealing shoulders on some roads.

However he said there was more work to do on popular bike routes like Horseshoe Bend Road and the Portarlington-Queenscliff Road.

New estates meant more traffic on roads traditionally used by cyclists as “quieter” routes home, Mr Burtt said.

“If we’re expanding the urban footprint we need to have a think about the effect it’s having on some of the ‘feeder’ roads.”

Geelong was about .5C warmer in September than the latest 30-year average for the month.

Nights were 1.1C warmer but the maximum daily temperatures were fractionally cooler.

Minimums averaged 8.3C, 1.1C above the average, while maximums were 16.9C, .2C below.

The warmest day of the month reached 23.5C on 8 September.

Most of the region received above to well-above average rain, in some cases more than double the latest 30-year average.

Geelong’s southern suburbs were particularly wet, Breakwater recording 125mm and southern Grovedale 150mm. Some of the measurements represented almost all the suburbs’ normal spring rainfall.

Geelong’s northern suburbs were comparatively drier, but still well-above the monthly average.

Overall, it was Geelong’s third wettest September since records began in 1871.

The soaking left the region’s water storages three quarters full at the end of the month in a dramatic rise since August when levels were below 33 per cent.

The downpours produced minor flooding of the Barwon River in Geelong from 14 September which forced closure of the old Breakwater for several days - thank you, VicRoads, for the new bridge!

The heaviest rain was recorded on 14 and 16 September with 35mm and 23mm respectively.

Also notable for the month was a very low pressure system that plunged to 987hPa on 28 September and which stayed low for several days.

At this year’s Geelong Stamp and Coin Fair that story will be the centenary of the city’s iconic Gala Day, he said.

Tony will display his rare collection of medals from the festival for the first time this Saturday in celebration of its anniversary next month.

“There are probably only four different types and I’ve got three of them,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone else in the (coin) club has them.”

The Geelong Gala Day began in 1916, to raise money for the Red Cross and returned soldiers.

From 1927 until recent years it raised money for the Geelong hospital.

Staying fit for life Marj Aldis feels fitter today than she did 30 years ago.

The Geelong pensioner received medical advice to take up regular exercise following a major health scare in her late 40s.

Her determination and commitment to following it means she feels fit and full of energy, even in her mid-60s.

Mrs Aldis suffered a brain aneurism and a minor stroke when she was 48.

She spent six weeks in hospital before learning to walk again.

“I’m a very determined person – to the point that my occupational therapist told me to pull back in rehab as I was pushing myself so hard,” Mrs Aldis said.

Thanks to the rehabilitation, massage, physiotherapy, Bowen therapy and a fitness program, she slowly regained her strength.

Now as a long-term Splashdown member, Mrs Aldis attends two LiveWell gym sessions and one water aerobics class every week.

Consistent exercise had improved her strength and balance markedly, she said.

“The doctors have told me that I will have ongoing balance and spatial issues as a result of my illness, so I need to work on these for the rest of my life.”

“If I have a break from exercising for any reason, I notice that lose my balance really quickly.”

Thankfully that suits her beautifully as she doesn’t want to sit still and loves staying active, she said.

“I feel so wonderful and I truly enjoy all the benefits of exercising.”

Splashdown is running two come and try sessions on Monday 10 October as part of the Geelong Seniors Festival.

As self-declared stalwarts of the Geelong Seniors Festival, Colin Mockett and Shirley Power have been a regular feature of the program for more than a decade.

Since the late ’90s, the couple behind Drop of a Hat Productions have performed concerts and tours.

They were also the driving force behind the Concert of the Decade series that opened the festival for nine years, concluding in 2011.

“There was a huge amount of work involved, but bringing together the best performers in Geelong at the region’s premier venue was definitely a highlight,” Mr Mockett said.

Featuring in four festival events in 2016, including a new tour of the ‘best and worst’ of Geelong, the couple have also been reworking their Geelong mural tour material.

Covering the history of the 32-metre long mu-

ral and the significance of its images, Drop of a Hat will deliver the 90-minute performance with its signature style of history and fun.

According to Mr Mockett, the mural is a significant Geelong artwork which is largely unknown to the general public.

“We felt it was our duty to bring it out from the shadows and in doing so, tell the story of Geelong,” he said.

Walking Tour: Colin Mockett’s Best and Worst of Geelong is on 12 October from 11.30am-1pm.

Chopper’s comedy rules

By Luke Voogt Chopper will be in Geelong to cement his rule over new superpower Anzakistan – New Zealand and Australia combined without the “s**t bits”.

“Chopper is just the bloke to run it,” said comedian Heath Franklin who has portrayed the underworld figure for a decade.

“He may not have any experience, but at least you know where he stands – right behind a moustache.”

With five prime ministers in the last five years it’s time for the notorious enforcer to step in, Franklin said.

“If everybody’s having a go at being Prime Minister why can’t Chopper?”

Since his debut on Network 10’s The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, Chopper has sold more than 450,000 tickets in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Franklin created Chopper after watching Eric Banner’s film portrayal in 2000. The contrast between Chopper’s “charming” and “murderous, hyper-violent” sides fascinated him.

“I have to admit I didn’t read too much of Chopper’s books,” he said.

“As Chopper himself said ‘don’t let the truth get in the way with a good yarn’.”

Soon Chopper had a regular segment on the Ronnie Johns show where he took aim at everything from political correctness and “metrosexuals” to “dog psychiatrists” and soy milk.

“One of the good things about Chopper is he’s a mouthpiece for my opinions,” Franklin said.

“Chopper’s black and white – he either loves things or he hates things.”

The Potato Shed is inviting country music lovers to Drysdale for a national tribute to the legendary Patsy Cline this weekend.

Always ... Patsy Cline is the true-life story of country icon’s lifelong friendship with Louise Seger, who she met in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961.

The musical includes 27 Patsy Cline songs with hits like I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams, Crazy, Walkin’ After Midnight and She’s Got You. It will be a treat for Cline’s original fans and window into her life for a new generation of country music lovers, promoters said.

Denny Lawrence directs the musical which stars prolific Australian country artist Courtney Conway as Patsy Cline.

Conway graduated from the College of Country Music in Tamworth, and her 2014 album 21 days in Nashville reached the top 10 in the ARIA Country Albums Chart.

She received four nominations at the 2015 Country Music Channel Awards, including Oz Artist of the Year.

Stage actress Mandi Lodge, who featured in Just The Ticket, Menopause The Musical and Dumped! The Musical, plays Louise Seger.

TOURING: Brisbane reggae band Kingfisha will perform in Torquay this month.

Brisbane band Kingfisha will hit Torquay with its signature mix of weighty reggae and dub.

The band is touring the country after releasing its second album Offered it Up on 9 September.

Lead singer and guitarist Anthony Forrest is looking forward to getting down to the Surf Coast.

“Hopefully, we’ll have some time to get down to the beach,” he said.

“I’ve heard it’s really pretty.”

Forrest, 39, and his band mates grew up among the Fortitude Valley live-music scene, rocking to the likes of Australian alt-rock icons Regurgitator.

“Back then the valley had lots of good bands,” he said.

The six-piece band has crafted modern reggae music for five years by coupling its love of Jamaican rhythms with personal depth and style.

For Forrest the new album is a change of direction.

“This album is a lot more electronic and a lot more dubby,” he said.

“In that sense we’re creating our own style rather than just being a reggae roots band.”

What’sat on

Kingfisha’s singles have featured on Triple J and its first self-titled 10-track release landed album of the week at PBS FM, Radio Australia and East Side Radio.

The band won Triple J’s Unearthed Roots Winner in 2010 and toured Africa with shows in South Africa, Mozambique, Reunion Island and Swaziland.

Kingfisha recently inked deals with 123 Agency for bookings and ABC Music for the release of Offered it Up. Forrest described Kingfisha as a tight-knit “family band” and he has known some of the members since high school.

“The other fellas we just sort met along the way in the Brisbane music scene,” he said.

“We’ve all been friends for a fair while now and we have holidays with our families together.

“I love performing at festivals and touring with the band.”

Kingfisha will perform at the Torquay Hotel on Friday 7 October.

Sculptors showcase their handiwork Geelong sculptors will create Wonderland inspired by the city’s new library precinct at Deakin’s waterfront campus Friday.

“We wanted our sculptures to be inspired by the imagination and wonder of books,” said the group’s secretary Cinnamon Stephens.

The sculptors will display everything from plays on the word ‘wonderland’ to sculptures of Alice from Lewis Carroll’s classic, Ms Stephens said.

“We tell our members to be as literal or as lateral as they want - the theme is just a starting point.”

More than 30 sculptors from Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and the Golden Plains will display roughly 50 artworks at the exhibit.

“Most of the pieces are for sale,” Ms Stephens said. “A lot of us are professional sculptors and we normally sell quite a bit.”

The 46-year-old mother-of-two has been an avid metal worker her whole working life. She

discovered the art studying sculpture at Ballarat University in the early '90s.

“I fell in love with welding very early on mainly because of the challenge of it and because not very many women did it back then,” she said.

“I’ve been living off my art since. I love the fact that metal is so durable. You can create something that’s organic with beautiful flowing lines but is still strong and practical. And I love the alchemy of it. Watching different metals fuse together, it’s a very primitive and ancient art.”

For this year’s exhibit, Ms Stephens created a mirror framed by hearts, aptly titled the Queen of Hearts.

“I’m doing four screens that all depict native flora and fauna,” she said.

Ms Stephens urged locals to come to the group’s 14th exhibit to support local artists, like Ocean Grove ceramic sculptor Dani Salvo.

“She’s got an amazing style,” she said “The fanciful characters she comes up with are really striking and quite large for ceramics.”

SPORT Cats champion bows out Champion Geelong defender Corey Enright announced his retirement Wednesday after 332 games in the navy and white hoops.

“It has been a privilege to play for this great club and alongside so many champions,” Enright said.

“Obviously, the success we have enjoyed over the past 17 years has been a highlight, but the friendships and relationships that I have made over my time with the club will endure for the rest of my life.“ Enright earned his sixth All-Australian this season after yet another stellar campaign.

The 35-year-old broke the club record of 325 games previously held by Ian Nankervis in the Cats round 19 win over the Western Bulldogs.

“I would like to thank everyone from the Geelong Football Club, from teammates, to coaches and staff, for making it such a memorable time in my life,” he said.

“While football is a serious business, my time at the club has been very enjoyable and I have always looked forward to coming through the doors each day.”

Enright thanked the club’s “vocal and passionate” followers and his family for “the sacrifices they have made over the past 17 years”.

“Without their support, I could not have enjoyed the playing career that I have had,” he said.

“I will now take some time to assess what the future holds.”

Geelong coach Chris Scott paid tribute to one of the club’s greatest players.

“Corey leaves a legacy that will be impossible to replicate,” Scott said.

“He has played at a high level throughout his career, and that continued through this year.”

“Corey is not only a great player, but he has shown outstanding leadership both on and off the field during his time at the club.”

Scott described Enright as the “true embodiment of what we want our players to be”.

“The statistics and honours speak for themselves, but it’s the work that he has done with his teammates outside of the public view that sets him apart,” he said.

“Corey has always been willing to help other players, to pass on his knowledge and to do everything he can to make the team better.

“Boris will be difficult to replace on the field and around the club. We wish him well with whatever he takes on next, and I’m certain that if he was to pursue a coaching career he will be successful.”

Enright debuted in the second round of 2001 against St Kilda after being selected by the Cats with the 47th pick in the 1999 national draft.

He won the Cats best and fairest in 2009 and 2011, both premiership seasons, and played in three premiership sides. Enright appeared in 24 finals and helped the Cats reach the final series 11 times in 16 seasons. The Cats were victorious in 220 of Enright’s 332 games, a club record.

Soggy grounds force first-round cricket cancellations LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake With the AFL season done and dusted, cricket returns to local playing fields this weekend. However, with a record amount of rain in September, many clubs will struggle to get a wicket prepared in time.

The Geelong Cricket Club was scheduled to start their campaign last Friday at home against Monash Tigers, but the entire round was cancelled two days prior due to the soggy condition of most grounds.

While the First and Second XI’s will make up that round on 6 November, all four teams will look to start their season tomorrow against Melbourne University.

In terms of personnel, Eamonn Vines has once again been named captain. He will no doubt continue to grow into the role, but will still look to the likes of Liam Buchanan and Dom Mcglinchey for support.

With such a young and inexperienced squad, a good start tomorrow will be crucial to the Cats chances this season.

Snapping up the softer lure

In an attempt to cut division one from 12 teams to 10, Bell Post Hill were controversially dumped back in May. But on appeal, they successfully pleaded their case and were promptly reinstated.

That meant that with 12 teams still needed, Geelong West went down to division two after years of struggling to remain competitive in the top flight, with St Peters to come up to test themselves against the big boys.

With a host of player movements around town throughout winter, it’s hard to pick who the teams to beat are, although with Grovedale adding Glen Talarico to their premiership winning line-up, they will rightly go in favourites to win it again.

Murgheboluc v GEELONG CITY, ST JOSEPHS v Lara, Leopold v EAST BELMONT, BELL POST HILL v Newtown and Chilwell, NORTH GEELONG v St Peters, South Barwon v Grovedale.

Division two has seen Waurn Ponds relegated, while Guild St Marys come back up. The big talking point in division two has been the sheer number of talented players that clubs have managed to attract. Joel Davies will play for Torquay, Chris Bambury is at Manifold Heights, while Andrew

Fergusson head to St Albans Breakwater. Add to that the likes of Ben Knight, Michael Lymer, Sean Bogan, Ben Spencer and Simon Anderson, this season will be one of the best seen in division two for many years.

HIGHTON v Thomson, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v Modewarre, GEELONG West v Alexander Thomson, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Bell Park, TORQUAY v Marshall, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v Guild St Marys Division three looks slightly different, with eight teams chasing the premiership cup this year.

Waurn Ponds/Deakin will look to rebuild in the lower division after struggling in division two for the past few seasons. Shelford have somehow moved from the old division three, to the second division of the One Day competition, after losing a host of players. Meanwhile, Corio Bay drops back also, their First XI will compete in a mixed lower division.

It remains to be seen how all these changes will play out, but be that as it may, all teams start on zero points, and all will be eyeing off the trophy at the end of March.

Corio Bay allowed anglers a sheltered option from the weather with pinkie snapper devouring soft plastics.

The spoil grounds to the west of Limeburner’s boat saw schools of pinkie snapper averaging 35-40cm gather in large numbers.

Anglers made use of depth sounder to mark fish then presented soft plastics to schooled up pinkies and boated numerous fish.

Around the corner at Clifton Springs the Point Richards Channel was a chosen haunt for many snapper anglers.

The section of the channel known as The Turn produced snapper to 4kg for those fishing of a tide change.

Squid still remained a consistent capture for those drifting in close in 3-4 metres of water, they also make for a handy bait supply for the snapper too.

The Queenscliff boat harbour this time of year sees an influx of pinkie snapper along with a few larger specimens.

Fishing the main causeway with soft plastics on the end of the run-in tide saw anglers bank pinkie snapper up to 45cm with the odd silver trevally making its way into anglers’ bags.

Anglers fishing from a boat inside the harbour and making use of a liberal berley trail often encountered better numbers of both trevally and pinkies.

Over at the Barwon River estuary the entrance anglers had little difficulty in landing whiting, Australian salmon and mullet.

Again a lightly weighted piece of prawn got the job done with some impressive sized mullet showing up.

With the recent flush the Barwon River has received, anglers have their fingers crossed the mulloway and bream fishing will really fire up.

Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads those drifting in 40m of water boated gummy shark and snapper with large baits such as squid and salmon fillet the most effective.

Surf anglers walking the beaches such as Bancoora on an incoming tide and making lengthy cast with 25gram metal lures took Australian salmon to over 2kg.

The rock platforms around Lorne also fished well when the wind and swell allowed safe access.

On the freshwater front Michael Evans took a trip up to Newlyn Res where, casting Norries Metal Wasaby lures, Michael came up tight with a 62cm brown trout.

Michael noted that the water resembled the colour of chocolate.

Bradley Cox was at it again this time at Wurdee Boluc.

Making long casts over the deeper weed beds Brad hooked into a couple of well-conditioned redfin using Pontoon 21 Paco’s.

Fishers have also encountered the odd rainbow trout with some rainbows almost 1kg in weight.
