Sharon Weir, from Pakenham, admits she and her son Tony Wiseman, 13, go out ‘Pokemoning’ at least once a day.

The gaming mum said they even took the train into the city to “spend the day and half the night chasing Pokemon”.

“Mainly because it spawns rarer Pokemon, and there are a lot more stops,” she said.

Tony, an Officer Secondary College student, said he didn’t know any other parent who played Pokemon Go with their kids, and that sometimes his mates would join them on their city exploration.

“Mum is interested in the game and wants to play. It’s the only reason I was allowed a phone,” Tony said.

Sharon currently has 122 Pokemon, and Tony has 125.

Locally, the pair’s favourite hot spot is at the old quarry in Cardinia Waters estate.

“It’s a good spot. We put lures down and try attract Pokemon,” Sharon said.

She recalled a time she and Tony were walking home in the dark after a Pokemon Go session, and she fell into the lake.

“I wasn’t playing. I was trying to find my phone torch.

I took a few steps and sure enough, I fell into the lake,” Sharon said.

She said the game was a great way to get her son out of the house and seeing some of what the city has to offer.

“You meet a lot of people that are out there doing the same thing ... you stop and talk,” she said.

Snakes slide into shopping centre PAKENHAM children had the rare chance to get up close and personal with the world’s five deadliest snakes at a show in Cardinia Lakes shopping centre last week.

Raymond Hoser, known as the ‘Snake Man’, said the most common snakes in Cardinia shire were the copperhead and that tiger snakes - among the world’s deadliest - were also prevalent.

Mr Hoser, who lives with about 100 snakes, 12 frogs and 30 freshwater crocodiles, brought some of his most prized reptiles to Pakenham on Thursday 29 September.

Among them were the world’s top five most venomous snakes - the fierce, taipan, brown, tiger and death adder snakes.

“I’ve been into reptiles since I was dropped as a baby and I’ve been catching snakes since I was four years old,” Mr Hoser said.

“At this time of year, you have one summery day and all the snakes come out to sun bake.

“Every sunny day we’ve had, the phones go crazy and we’re called to catch snakes. Grand Final Day last year was one of the worst - we caught 32 snakes in the one day.

“It’s important that if you see a snake to ignore it. Nine times out of 10 it will run away. If it doesn’t, then call a snake catcher.”

Mr Hoser said snake hotspots that residents should be wary of include near golf courses, railway lines, creeks and scrub.

By Alana Mitchelson SHOPPERS were surprised to stumble across greyhounds in the centre of a Pakenham shopping centre.

Owner of three retired greyhounds Julie Dixon has volunteered for the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) for the past five years to try to shake the stigma associated with retired greyhounds.

“You only ever hear the nasty stories,“ the Pakenham resident said.

“There’s such a stigma attached to them but the reality is that they make the most loyal and affectionate pets. They are placid and easy going dogs by nature.

“I also volunteer at an aged car home and I take my greyhounds in for pet therapy. The dogs bring out a lot of emotions in the residents.

“All dogs that go through GAP undertake transition training for four to six weeks to introduce the exracing dog to all kinds of different environments.

“The welfare of the greyhounds through the whole process is paramount.”

greyhounds that had been through the transition program to Arena Shopping Centre on Thursday 29 September to show shoppers who docile they were.

She said the program matches would-be owners to dogs that suit their needs, for example, matching a smaller greyhound with a family that has a young child.

“They become part of the family,” she said.

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Rose Streatfeild said that before being involved with the organisation, she had been a greyhound foster carer.

“I’ve recently just signed up again,” Ms Streatfeild said.

“Foster caring for a greyhound is really flexible and works well for those who might go away on work trips and are unable to have their own long-term dog.

“You also get to meet all different kinds of dogs with their own personalities.”

Retired racing greyhounds vary in age from about two to six.

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy was punched to the head and robbed by a group of African youths in Pakenham, police said.

The young teen was walking home from Lakeside Primary School when he was approached by the group of about 12 male African youths about 5.45pm on Monday 26 September.

One of the youths demanded the teen’s phone.

When the teen didn’t hand it over, the offender punched him to the side of the head.

The offender took the phone and ran off with the group.

The assault and robbery occurred in Banksia Grove, Pakenham. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A PAKENHAM teen who has been missing for about a week is feared to be associating with unknown people.

Police have issued urgent advice for anyone who sees 15-year-old Malak Uglo Chol to come forward.

Malak was last seen in Pakenham on 27 September and has not made contact with family or friends since that time.

She has no access to money.

Police and Malak’s family hold concerns for her welfare due to the length of time that she has been missing, her age, and the possibility that she may be associating with unknown people.

Malak is known to frequent the Pakenham, Melbourne and Williamstown areas.

Malak was last known to be wearing a black top with a khaki cardigan over the top, black jeans and red Nike runners.

Anyone who sees Malak is urged to contact the Pakenham police station on 5945 2500.

Islam forum takes on a low-key tone

By Cam Lucadou-Wells ORGANISERS of a forum to combat Islamophobia in Melbourne’s south-east are pulling away publicity due to security fears.

Casey-based teacher Inaz Janif said she organised the forum ‘The Right to Remain Muslim’ due to several reports of young Muslim women being assaulted in public.

Among the victims was a woman whose hijab was snatched off her head by a male in a Hallam supermarket.

Ms Janif was also aware of a group of girls wearing hijabs who were shoved into a wall by an attacker in a Melbourne shopping centre and another nearly forced off the road by a hate-speaking fellow driver.

“These are people who I know and care about.

Should these girls lose their lives over this?”

Ms Janif said after initial reluctance by police to prosecute the supermarket attacker, he was handed a 12-month good-behaviour bond.

However, she said many victims – vulnerable, young and from refugee backgrounds – were not comfortable to report such attacks.

“That’s why it’s so disturbing to see people in the national political sphere giving oxygen to people who say Muslims are not welcome.

“It’s one thing to verbally attack people, another thing to put our hands on other people.”

Posts on a south-east based Facebook pages that incited violence against Muslims and mosques was also disturbing, Ms Janif said.

She requested the date and place of this month’s forum not be publicised due to “hate mail” she’s already received as well as security concerns by police.

Ms Janif said the forum was a first of its kind in the south-east.

Ms Janif recalls after the September 11 attacks how she was shunned by fellow university students at the time.

“I’d sit down and people would get up and sit on the other side of the lecture room.

“I built up strength and resilience by thinking about where I come from and where I want to be.

I thought about other strong role-models who are female and Muslim.”

“With population growth comes the good and the bad. It means we’re going to have to focus more on engaging with youth and building connections with youth agencies in our network to ensure we can make the appropriate referrals.

“But youth agencies have been active in helping ID offenders. CCTV is also becoming more prevalent in private houses and we’re able to use that to assist investigations.”

While young Cardinia offenders were found to be committing more assaults and property damage offences, drug offences dropped 41 per cent since last year among teenagers aged 15 to 19.

“I think education has played a large part in reducing the number of youth drug offences,” Sen Sgt Stanley said.

“People are more aware of the vulnerabilities and consequences of drug use and the importance not only on their health but in reducing opportunities for them to be employed.”

Ed hits the mean streets THE Shadow Minister for Police, Community Safety and Corrections got out on the frontline with Cranbourne Police on the night of Thursday 29 September.

Edward O’Donohue spent the night with Acting Sergeant Ross Stewart of Cranbourne as he worked his night shift in the divisional van.

“I started at 10pm at finished at about 3.30am or 3.45am,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“I was really impressed by the professionalism and compassion and concern to act for the community’s interest.

“It is it obvious they are on the frontline and the people in the community look to them to fix things.”

Mr O’Donohue said the night out with the police gave him a better understanding of the nature of the job.

“Things can change dramatically as a result of a triple-zero phone call and resources can be diverted at the drop of a hat,” he said.

“To watch the police in action and the range of call-outs they have to respond to, from missing persons to late night parties to an aggravated burglary, to suspicious vehicles and people.

“The calls and requests were constant and never-ending.”

Acting Sergeant Ross Stewart said there was a lot for Mr O’Donohue to see on that night and the ride along was a good experience for everyone.

“We had quite a diverse night,” he said.

“We went to suspicious vehicles, noise complaints, an aggravated burglary, people being drunk - a pretty varied night.

“It was good he could see what we do and go through things from our perspective and also quite good in the way he could see the different things we go through and he was interested the whole night and asked a lot of questions.”

Sgt Stewart said it he would be happy to do something similar again.

“I am more than happy to show people what it is like so they get an understanding of what we do,” he said.

Mr O’Donohue said it was eye-opening to see how understaffed and over-worked the police officers in the Casey are.

“There is an enormous police resourcing problem in the southeast,” he said.

“In my conversations with police units since the change of government, it’s clear more police are needed in the Casey and Cardinia regions in particular.

“Not just for community safety and the growing population but it is unrealistic to ask the first responders to work themselves to exhaustion.”

Current Minister for Police Lisa Neville, who has been on a tour of police stations in the south-east recently, said meeting with police on the frontline was an important part of her job.

“I intend to continue my visits and discussions with police personnel across the region and state,” she said.

“I have immense respect for the work being done by those in specialist teams who are arresting young offenders and patrolling known crime hotspots.

“As well as those officers who are in divvy vans responding to other crimes like family violence.”

Ms Neville said she had a great understanding of what police in the south-east were facing and said she was committed to delivering more boots on the ground.

“Since we came to government, police numbers have increased in the Casey and Cardinia regions and we believe more resources are needed in these growth communities,” she said.

“That’s why we have funded an additional 406 police, and the roll-out of 400 Police Custody Officers continues statewide.”

“The Chief Commissioner who is responsible for staff allocation - has indicated that growth communities like Casey will be receiving additional police.”

The latest crime statistics show that overall criminal offences have increased by 18 per cent in Casey over a 12-month period between June 2015 and June 2016.

The largest jump in offences was seen in abduction and related crimes with a 70 per cent increase over 2015 from 27 offences up to 46 offences.

Other crimes that saw a jump in the number of offences in Casey were burglaries and breaking and entering offences, as well as theft by deception offences.

WITH the council elections drawing near, it makes us wonder that in the City of Casey 81 candidates have been nominated for just 11 seats.

The question on everyone’s lips must be why so many candidates for such a meagre number of seats.

Apart from the old and new councillors, are the rest just dummy candidates or are they specifically qualified for a council role and what must be infused by them in the council. Council must not be used as a stepping stone to foster further into state politics.

Once elected, councillors must sign an agreement to complete their full tenure of service as a councillor without being influenced by council hierarchy, be honest, transparent and accountable and always remember that it is the ratepayer who is paying your salaries.

I WRITE to you in response to claims by Mayor Aziz that he is not running any 'dummy’ candidates. If that is the case, then why are seven candidates who quite clearly have opposing views to his own, preferencing him either second or third?

I AM writing in follow-up to a story in last week’s edition in relation to the disastrous alliance between Rex Flannery and Paul Richardson.

Mr Flannery states that I must be worried.

He is right, I am worried - not by him as any sort of credible competition, but by his reckless behaviour!

Firstly, Mr Flannery has already demonstrated gross irresponsibility by advising Mr Richardson (who is continuously in dispute with the City of Casey for reasons that reside only in his imagination) to stop paying rates!

I have a record of this in an email.

Is this the responsible attitude we expect from someone running for council?

If I had a dispute with VicRoads, real or imagined, do I stop paying my car registration? If I had a dispute with my bank, real or imagined, do I stop paying my mortgage?

What would be the consequences for such reckless actions?

Is this the level of maturity and responsibility Mr Flannery intends to display should he get elected?

Moreover, how could Mr Flannery state that he cares about our residents and Casey, and then preference a disaster like Mr Richardson second?

This is the same Mr Richardson who was arrested and convicted in the Magistrates Court for trespassing and resisting arrest.

The same Mr Richardson who made a vexatious claim to VCAT against council, and had the case thrown out, but only after costing the

A MAN who has been jailed 30 times in the past 20 years has been spared a further stint in jail.

The 40-year-old had done every form of sentence in his numerous court appearances, including drug treatment orders and suspended sentences, but had appeared to have turned the corner, his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October.

The man faced a disqualified driving charge but argued he had assumed at the time his licence had been reinstated upon his release from jail.

He had since been out of trouble with the law for seven months - his longest stint without arrest for a long time, his lawyer said.

The judge commented there was no point jailing the man again: “You would do it on my ear.”

The man was ordered to perform 50 hours of community work.

DANDENONG MP Gabrielle Williams has taken a keen interest in Casey Council electioneering, especially that of former ALP member and newly turned Liberal Rafal Kaplon.

Ms Williams told Star News she had taken issue with her image being used in Cr Kaplon’s mailout.

“Although I bear Rafal no ill will and have worked with him on a number of local matters, I want to make it clear, my permission was not sought and the use of my image is unauthorised for the purpose of election material.”

Recently Ms Williams urged Cr Kaplon to modify his Facebook post about a shortage of police numbers in Casey.

THE Lynbrook Lake Lantern Festival is back, and brighter than ever.

A CLYDE man charged with assaulting an emergency worker after police were called out to his property by RSPCA inspectors in April has told a court he will apply to the Supreme Court to subpoena material from the police.

During the failed subpoena bid in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Tony Bruce Cottle told Magistrate Jack Vandersteen that he didn’t accept the decision - nor an earlier rejection by Magistrate Barry Schulz.

“I have no confidence in your decisions. I will be appealing your decision.

During the supboena hearing, Mr Cottle expressed doubt over whether the police officer was legitimately defined as an emergency worker.

Mr Cottle’s 16-item subpoena bid included a copy of a police manual for use of police officers and emergency workers - an item that police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Gary van der Poel said didn’t exist.

He also requested a document proving the police officer was a competent emergency worker signed by the relevant State minister, or that she had been appointed by the minister as an emergency worker.

details for the authority that declared the 1 April incident an emergency, a victim impact statement for the police officer as well as recordings of conversations in the police car before and during Mr Cottle’s transfer to Narre Warren police station that day.

Mr Vandersteen said he rejected Mr Cottle’s request because it served no legitimate forensic purpose, and was broad, irrelevant and oppressive.

At this point, Mr Cottle walked away from the bar table and sat in the gallery.

Mr Cottle had been provided with a police record-of-interview and all material required under the Criminal Procedures Act, Mr Vandersteen said.

The magistrate then asked Mr Cottle if he consented to the Magistrates’ Court – or a higher court – hearing the charges.

Mr Cottle said he had not finished with the Magistrates’ Court, and would immediately apply for a review of Mr Vandersteen and Mr Schulz’s decisions.

Mr Vandersteen said Mr Cottle would be greatly assisted if he was represented at the next court hearing.

“A lot of the worry and concern you feel may be abated if you consult with a criminal practitioner.”

The case was adjourned to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November.

Thief put behind bars

A MAN has been jailed after being discovered with four bags filled with $2420 of cigarette lighters, cigarettes, phone chargers and assorted goods inside a Hampton Park shop after closing hours.

Aaron Raymond Greenwood, 31, pleaded guilty to 54 charges including a litany of theft and deceptions at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October.

Greenwood - who the court was told “had a serious drug habit” - had allegedly hid in an Uncle Buck’s store as it was locked up on 21 August.

The court was told the accused allegedly collected $2420 of goods after staff had left the store.

Greenwood then allegedly triggered a silent alarm when he broke into a next-door bottle shop through an adjoining roller door, Sgt Staples said.

In the Bottle-O Splash Liquor store, Greenwood allegedly added $155 of cigarettes and a can of Red Bull to his haul.

A bottle-shop staff member, alerted by the

alarm, arrived at the store and confronted Greenwood - who then hid in Uncle Buck’s before his arrest by police.

Greenwood, who said he used ice and GHB, was on bail at the time over other theft matters in June and July.

Some of those charges related to him allegedly using a stolen driver’s licence to test drive - and not return - two vehicles from separate car yards.

He was also accused of using the stolen licence to attempt to take out a $5000 bank loan in Frankston, and to buy several iPhone 6S phones at various outlets.

Greenwood also racked up about $2000 of sub-$100 purchases from stolen credit cards in a pre-dawn spending spree at servos and supermarkets in May. There was also an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on 16 August on charges of disqualified driving and using an unregistered vehicle.

Greenwood’s lawyer conceded the accused’s offending had spiralled out of control while using

GHB, prescription drugs and ice.

However, his 43-day stint in remand custody his first time in jail - was “sobering”, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Greenwood’s “volume” of offending, all after being put on a community corrections order in late April.

“You could see the wheels were falling off.”

Mr Vandersteen said it was a shame Greenwood was only appreciating the opportunity of the community corrections order after a drug-free stint in jail.

Greenwood was sentenced to a further 47 days in jail and disqualified from driving for six months.

His CCO was varied to a further 12 months after release, with drug, mental health and judicial monitoring.

“There will be unfortunately no excuses if you don’t comply with the corrections order and reoffend,” Mr Vandersteen said.

“You will face a significant term of imprisonment.”

Postie candidate taken off the beat

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A CASEY Council election candidate has been stood down from his postie duties after being caught delivering his election campaign material in his Australia Post uniform on the Grand Final Eve public holiday in Berwick.

Russell Larkins, who is employed by Australia Post, was photographed by rival Edrington Ward candidate James Williams during the how-to-vote card mailout on 30 September.

Mr Larkins - who said his manager told him to give no comment - said he was “disappointed” that Mr Williams had taken issue with his deliveries “I was just using a bit of nouse,” Mr Larkins said.

“It was on my own time. There was nothing in expenses passed on to Australia Post.

“My manager said I’d done nothing wrong.

It’s a beat up.”

Mr Larkins said since the delivery he, his wife and kids had been posting his flyers by foot.

“There’s other people who can afford to have them delivered by a distribution company. I can’t afford it.”

He said he’d rung up Mr Williams after the incident, but his rival “got angry and hung up on me”.

An Australia Post spokeswoman said a staff member had contravened strict protocols regarding Australia Post’s role in election campaigns.

“We take this incident extremely seriously.

“The employee has been removed from all delivery duties for the duration of the local government election period.

“We have commenced a formal inquiry into the incident and appropriate disciplinary action will be applied.”

He said he asked Mr Larkins at the time if he was allowed to be in an Australia Post uniform and driving on the footpath, but received no answer.

“As an investigator, I think transparency and integrity are essential attributes for those serving our community.”

Reversal ends behind bars

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A DISQUALIFIED driver with two suspended sentences hanging over his head has been jailed for three months after drunkenly reversing his friend’s car from the middle of a residential street.

Elia Pakwan, of Eumemmerring, blew 0.26 – more than five times the legal blood-alcohol limit – shortly after police watched him drive six metres on course to hit another parked vehicle on McNabb Court, Dandenong North,

on 14 December 2014, a court heard.

At the time, Pakwan had been recently disqualified from driving for four years, and was subject to suspended jail terms – eight months for recklessly causing injury and three months for an early count of disqualified driving.

He conceded to police that he had drank three beers but had only sought to move his drunken friend’s car from the middle of the street.

Prior to his Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 3 October, Pakwan

had allegedly failed to appear at court three times over the matter.

Pakwan’s lawyer argued there were exceptional circumstances to justify not invoking the suspended sentence, such as no further offending since late 2014.

The accused – who had a lengthy history of drink-driving – had made “significant strides” in curbing his alcohol and cannabis abuse through the help of family and church members, the lawyer said.

“He stopped using cannabis a year

ago and never drinks to excess.

“He was previously drinking large amounts of spirits and beer on a daily basis.”

Pakwan was also due to become a father in five months, the court heard.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there were exceptional circumstances only for the eight-month suspended jail term for recklessly causing injury.

Mr Vandersteen took into account the nature of the offending, Pakwan’s lack of recent offending, remission

from drugs and alcohol, stable accommodation and his impending fatherhood.

An eight-month jail term would be disproportionate but not a three-month term, Mr Vandersteen said.

“You’ve taken very positive steps.

It’s a pity you didn’t bring (the matter) to court earlier. Maybe you weren’t as stable as it was put to me.”

Pakwan will be released from prison before Christmas and the expected birth of his child. His driver’s licence was cancelled for a further four years.

Thompsons Road a goer

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Victorian Government has announced BMD Constructions has been awarded the contact to upgrade Thompsons Road between the Western Port Highway and the Cranbourne Berwick Road.

The contract is to begin stage one of the $175 million project, with commencement expected by the end of the year.

BMD has managed many large road infrastructure projects in Victoria and its urban development branch is developing the Clydevale Residential Estate in North Clyde.

BMD’s road projects include the M80 Ring Road Upgrade near Sunshine North, the Buangor Bypass project, the Bendigo Airport redevelopment and the Princess Highway East Duplication.

The first stage of upgrades to Thompsons Road will be the removal of the level train crossing near Merinda Park Train Station and some road duplication.

This stage will see a six-lane bridge built over the train line between Evans Road and the South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road duplicated between Marriott Boulevard and the South Gippsland Highway.

Stage one will also provide new paths and street lighting for cyclists and pedestrians to improve the connection to Merinda Park train station.

The following stages of the project will see major changes made to the road and pedestrian infrastructure of the Thompsons Road.

Subsequent stages of the project will see further duplication of Thompsons Road from the Frankston Dandenong Road to Marriot Boulevard and from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to the Berwick Cranbourne Road.

There will also be a total of 10 kilometres of new shared path along Thompsons Road for cyclist and pedestrian use.

Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the upgrades to Thompsons Road would be a big win for the expanding local community.

“The Thompsons Road upgrade will reduce traffic and travel time, make the drive safer and support our growing population,” he said.

“We want Victorians to spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home with their families.”

The Victorian Government has predicted a completion date for the entire project of early to mid-2019.

Victorians beating gas threats VICTORIANS are kicking goals when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with more than 180 Victorianbased organisations partnering with the Andrews Labor Government in its climate change pledge initiative TAKE2.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio launched Pledge Action Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) earlier last month. The MCG is one of the TAKE2 Founding Partners.

Effective climate change action needs a team approach.

All sectors of the community can play a vital role in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to ensure Victoria makes a meaningful contribution to keeping the temperature rise to under two degrees.

“Collective action is the only way to achieve real change in reducing our emissions and reaching net zero emissions by 2050,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Like other Founding Partners, the MCG is helping bring Victoria closer to its net zero emissions target when the siren sounds in 2050.

Thanks to 12,500 new light fittings and a cloud monitoring system, the MCG is now a world leader, recycling 75 per cent of its waste and reducing water use by 45 per cent.

The Labor Government has made it mandatory for all government departments to pledge actions to reduce emissions from their operations and move towards low carbon technologies and practices.

Some of Victoria’s most innovative businesses and community organisations have signed up as TAKE2 Founding Partners: Zoos Victoria is the world’s first certified carbon neutral zoo, using sustainable lighting, heating and cooling, small scale solar installations and best practice environmental management Qantas Group has lifted the fuel efficiency of its fleet and aims for an annual improvement of 1.5 per cent, along with a target of halving its emissions by 2050 compared with 2005 levels.

Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy with advanced electric vehicles the development of renewable electricity generation through electric energy storage systems.

So, just what is a lentigo maligna?

A LENTIGO maligna (literally a ‘malignant freckle’) is a very slow growing but insidious type of melanoma occurring on the sun damaged skin of people from their forties onwards.

They are particularly common on the head and neck.

They are sometimes so slow growing that the

person will ‘get used to them’ and not recognise them as a problem even when they occur in very visible sites such as the face.

Furthermore the person’s friends, relatives or even doctor may not recognise a lentigo maligna from other benign freckles and pigmentations.

Untreated however lentigo maligna will ex-

pand and invade and eventually become as dangerous as any other melanoma.

The treatment is complete surgical excision so early diagnosis is very important to try to avoid large excision or graft repair scars.

Dermoscopy (examination of the skin under bright light and 20x magnification) can be very

helpful in picking up early lentigo maligna lesions.

Last round of human power

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Casey Fields Criterium track in Cranbourne will host a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) endurance event this month which is open to all to experience this unique sport.

The event is being hosted by the Casey-Cardinia HPV and Cycling Club, and is the last round of the 2016 Jet Couriers Vic HPV Series.

Participants in the event will be riding a recumbent bicycle, similar to a regular bicycle but with the rider lying down rather than sitting on the bike.

The endurance event will see teams of six to eight people from schools and community groups in the Cranbourne area, as well as many who have travelled long distances, riding for eight hours.

At any given time, the teams

will have one rider on the track, putting all their training and practice to work.

With free entry for spectators and many catering options, everyone in the community is encouraged to come along and check out the action.

The HPV endurance event will begin at 10am on Saturday 8 October and will finish up at 6pm the same day.

FRIDAY was for Chopper.

Harley Hulme was just 19 when he was killed after being hit by a train following a night out with friends back in June.

The passing of the youngster affectionately known as ‘Chopper’ sent shockwaves through the local sporting community triggering an outpouring of emotion by those who knew him.

On Friday’s public holiday, some of his closest mates gathered at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve to hold the first annual cricket match between the Lions and Jindivick - who Harley was set to play for under former Lions premiership player and great friend Steven Dillon this season.

The Pakenham side was made up of a combination of Harley’s mates, teammates, and Lions youngsters who looked up to him.

It was led by one of his closest friends Zac Chaplin - and Zac’s father Neil.

Steven thought of the concept of the game, which is set to become an annual event, and led the Jindivick side out.

Zac was overwhelmed by the turnout of those to celebrate Harley’s life, given Friday’s dreary weather forecast.

But there was no way they were going to miss the opportunity to celebrate the life of someone so well loved.

The two sides played for a perpetual shield, presented by Harley’s pa - Beau.

“Stevie and Zac organised this between the two of them - they were both great friends of Harley’s,” he said.

“They come around all the time to see me, those boys, and made sure I was in agreement with anything before it went ahead.

“We’ve got the shield, and it’ll be an annual thing between Jindivick and Pakenham.

“I’m really looking forward to that.

“This is a celebration of Harley and he’d be so chuffed. There were so many of his mates there, and it was a great turnout from other sporting clubs as well.

“We have to celebrate his life and the guys coming up with the Twenty-20 game is just fantastic.”

Harley was a particularly talented cricketer - scoring a superb unbeaten 128 for Pakenham as a 15-year-old before later going on to play for Casey-South Melbourne - and also played footy for the Lions.

Belting their way to finals

By Russell Bennett THE equations are simple. Five into four, and even six into four simply don’t go.

The brutal nature of the supercompetitive upper-echelon of the West Gippsland Cricket Association will be on show for all to see right from the start of the new season this weekend with at least five sides, and potentially as many as seven, fighting tooth and nail to secure a Premier finals berth.

Pakenham was clearly the class of the competition throughout the home and away season in 2015/16 and thoroughly deserved its crown, but the Lions know that their semi-final against Merinda Park could so easily have gone the other way. In a battle between first and fourth, practically nothing separated them.

It’s likely to be a similar story this season with Tooradin and last year’s vanquished grand finalists Kooweerup having taken huge steps forward. The Lions will absolutely still be there when the whips are cracking and now have the certain knowledge that their best is good enough - that they can take on, and beat, any side in the competition right when it matters most.

Poor pennant start CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS THE Cardinia Waters Bowls Club Pennant year got off to a bad start on Tuesday’s opening day. Not one point was scored over six rinks, but things can only get better.

The division 1 side were at home to Berwick in cool conditions. The closest score was on Jim Smith’s rink - rookie Alan Copely was leading, Dennis Patmore second and John Hutchinson third. They were down early but fought back to be only three down on the 19th end but lost a close one, 15 to 18. There was another close game on David Blake’s rink. With Bill Tippelt leading, Mick Knight as second and Bill Hite third they were very close all day and a five on the sixth end got them level.

But the visitors wouldn’t give in and went on to win 20 to 16. Skipper John Van Vugt, a very happy Bulldog fan, played with a bowling arm due to a knee injury, he had Brian Wright leading, Gunter Baumbach second and Simon Koning playing third. At lunch they were down one to 25 but played better to hold their own on the run home but lost 11 to 30. The overall score was 42 to 68.

The Division 2 side went to Cranbourne RSL and were beaten 49 to 76. Skipper John Carr with Brian Byrne, first gamer Michelle Bonfield and Jenny Edmonds had the best chance of a win, they were leading 12 to 11 on the 14th end but fell away badly to lose 13 to 20. One win for Lions PAKENHAM BOWLS THERE may have been jubilant celebrations at the Western Oval on Saturday after the Dogs broke their long drought, but there was far less cause to rejoice at the Lions Den last Tuesday with only one of the three sides tasting success in Round One of Midweek Pennant.

As a result of last year’s great results, Pakenham One were promoted to First Division this year and underwent their baptism of fire on rain-affected grass at Clayton where they struggled in the heavy conditions, eventually going down overall by 17 shots. The only winning rink, in front from the word go and holding on to finish 21 to 19, was skipped by impressive new member Ned Courtin, with returning member Charles Harris (3), another welcome new member Brian Norton (2) and the ever reliable David Laird at (L). The One’s will be at home to Cranbourne for Round Two. Pakenham Two (Third Div) were the only side to play at Pakenham on Tuesday where they kicked off the season with a satisfying and relatively comfortable 67 to 46 win against Vermont South. Best winning rink with a massive 26 to 7 score was Bryan Biasci (S), Ave Jones (3), Garry Salomons (2) and Faye Ritchie (L). The Two’s face a long trek to North Balwyn for Round Two. Recent reports had Bryan in hospital unfortunately - get well soon Biach!

Pakenham Three (promoted this season) had an introduction to Third Division they would rather forget, losing on all three rinks at Noble Park in a comprehensive 39 to 72 defeat. Only John Moore’s rink put up much in the way of resistance, although they still went down 12 shots to 18. John was supported by Ray Leggett (3), Ray Pigdon (2) and another welcome new member Lavinia Moss (L).

Having banked zero points, the Three’s sit at the bottom of the ladder but the good news is that there is only one way forward from here and that is up. Round Two will see the Three’s at home to The Dandenong Club.

Last Saturday Pakenham held its Monthly Medal. The club would normally not run the event on Grand Final day, but is due to core its greens this Thursday, which would have meant running the medal on freshly cored greens, not ideal

for anyone. Pakenham Golf Club Monthly Medal specialist Bryan Clydesdale (9) once again showed why he’s got this tag. Bryan won three Monthly Medals in 2015 and added another one to the trophy cabinet on Saturday. Playing in the first group, his score was not headed all day - shooting a great score of 39 points in drizzly cold conditions. Nick McQualter (6) was runner-up in A grade with 37 points. B Grade was won by Rob Christie (19), Rob’s lessons with Kevin must be starting to pay off, returning a score of 37 points to beat Wayne Knudsen (14) on countback. Josh Ralston (30) won C grade and was very close to tying for the Monthly Medal, shooting 38 points, putting a gap between himself and second place-getter, the super consistent, Tom McDermott (24) with 32 points.

PAKENHAM GOLF THE Pakenham Golf Club held a stableford event on Monday of last week with Geoff Percival (12) holding off Tom McDermott (24) on a countback, with both players scoring 36 points, while Tom Reid came in third with 35 points. Ball went down to: 31 points.

After weeks of poor weather, the club finally had a nice enough day on Wednesday to run its Midweek Medal. Frankie Chiu (15) played a particularly solid round in tough conditions, finishing with 36 points to take out the September Midweek Medal. Stan Gilbert (13), fresh from a few weeks off, shot 34 points to be runner-up to Frankie in B Grade. A Grade was won by visitor Stewart Allen (1) with 34 points, holding off fellow low-marker Michael Bainbridge (2) on 32 points.

Balls went down to: 28 points On Friday the club held its 2016 Holden Scramble event with a full field of 108 players enjoying the public holiday.

Against all odds of the weather forecast, the entire round was played in sunshine with very little wind. The Holden Scramble is one of the club’s major events held every year and with the field size of 108, two separate teams qualified for the regional final to be held at Sandhurst on 26 October. Both teams will have the opportunity to qualify for the national final, held on the Golf Coast in November.

Honda’s long Civic service

By Derek Ogden HONDA and Civic go together like fish and chips - have done since 1973.

Ten generations later, the latest Civic landed in Australia this year with almost 200 pre-orders on the books.

Already voted the 2016 North American Car of the Year, Honda’s best-selling car globally comes Down Under in five grades - VTi, VTi-S, VTiL, RS and VTi-LX. Initial interest is centred on the RS at $31,790 and VTi-LX, $33,590, plus on-road costs. The line-up kicks off with the VTi at $22,390.

Aimed to appeal to a wide range of customers the new sedan sets the bar high in the small-car class with the addition of the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assist technologies, available on the halo model VTi-LX (the test vehicle).

For those who would like a splash of extra colour in their driving experience Honda has introduced the optional Black Pack, which fitted to the VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-LX for $2998 includes black 17-inch alloys, black front under spoiler, black side skirt set, black door mirror covers, black ducktail spoiler and black sports grille.

The new sedan leads a threepronged launch program for the model with the Civic hatch arriving in the first half of 2017, followed by the high-performance Type R hatch.

The new Civic front is more forceful than that of its predecessor, with its full-width, deep horizontal chromeplated band cutting the radiator grille from the air intake below and ending in LED headlamps on the outer edges.

The Honda ‘H’ is writ large on the central grille.

A long bonnet links with sweptback, slim A-pillars announcing a profile given over to aerodynamic efficiency which is complemented by underbody panelling which also improves fuel-efficiency and delivers the bonus of cabin quietness.

A coupe-style roof line connects seamlessly with C-pillars that carry the curvature to the outside rear corners of the long boot, where they intersect with Honda’s signature C-shaped ‘light-pipe’ LED taillights.

The interior attains new levels of quality, refinement and spaciousness for the Civic.
