Water everywhere By Monique Kuzeff THE Murray River is expected to remain high as residents are being warned to prepare for a possible flood peak higher than that of recent weeks. A twelfth gateway at Hume Dam was opened on Monday, currently releasing 76,000 megalitres (ML) per day. Areas that may be affected by further rainfall, inflow from the Kiewa River and increased releases from the Hume Dam, which currently sits at 97.58 per cent capacity, include the Murray River Valley downstream of Lake Hume. On Sunday afternoon the SES crews and volunteers door-knocked residents at Doctor’s Point, Waterview Road, lower Atkins Street and Kensal Green Drive to let them know about the potential occurrence. Various flood precautions such as sandbags are also being put into place at certain locations downstream from Lake Hume. Region controller NSW SES Murray Region Bernard Kates said that there hadn’t been a weather pattern like that of recent weeks for some years. “Last time the weather was like this would have been in 2012 and it was subtly different to what we’ve been experiencing,” Mr Kates said. “It’s not totally unusual but more often occurs much further downstream from Albury so it’s quite strange for us with one weather event after another.” According to the Bureau of Metereology (BoM), the Border region can anticipate about 25 to 50 millimetres of rainfall over the next eight days and is predicting the Albury gauge to be at 5.28 metres with moderate flooding. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s acting head of river management Andrew Reynolds flooding in the area continues to increase.

Another gateway was opened at the Hume Dam, which is now releasing 76,000 megalitres per day. 160180 “Water continues to flow in to the dam from last week’s rain and the BoM has forecast significant rainfall in the catchment (on Monday and Tuesday),” he said. “Higher releases are possible in

coming days in anticipation of higher inflows.” He said the rate of release will depend on how much rain falls over the next week. “Given the dam is almost full, we

expect rain upstream to pass downstream through the dam quite quickly.” Mr Reynolds encouraged those being affected by risks of flooding to regularly monitor the BoM website for the latest flood warnings and information.

RETAIL professional Danny Lowe believes that a council which consists of diverse backgrounds is important when it comes to shaping and planning the future of Wodonga City. He also believes that his nonaffiliation with any political party or activist group allows him to have a neutral and unbiased perspective on council prioritising. Having resided in the area for 30 years, Mr Lowe currently manages a small business operation on the Border, which he has been doing for about 20 years. As a single parent to a child with special needs, Mr Lowe has a particular focus to improve the services and facilities offered to the disabled within the community. His agenda would also be in support of attracting new businesses and investment to the area, monitoring and managing debt and ensuring the community are well-informed of council plans. He would like to ensure that community feedback is reflected in all aspects of council decision-making processes and planning.

22-year-old Geoffory Butt wishes to join council to offer a youth voice and input into the Wodonga Council’s decision-making process. Inspired to run for council by former councilor Eric Kerr, Mr Butt believes there is a lack of youth input in local government and so he would like to “bring a young perspective to council”. “We are the future of the world and I see that it’s important that young people have a voice on council. “While I see there is a lot of chat around policy, I also see that there’s currently not a single young person on the table.” Having witnessed the changes in the Albury Wodonga communities while growing up, Mr Butt became passionate about the environment including walking trails, parks, and gardens in the area. While he would like to see a more sustainable budget, he would also like more of the money spent on new infrastructure including roads, footpaths and community and civic organisations.

CO-FOUNDER of the Northeast East Young Professionals Network Ben Clifton understands the importance of listening to people before making plans for them. Mr Clifton moved to Wodonga after serving in the Army for seven years to work in his family business. He believes Wodonga is at a “crucial junction”, and that the right team of people are needed to “steer the ship in the right direction”. “We need leadership, vision and willingness to govern openly,” Mr Clifton said. As a lover of the outdoors and a frequent user of the Federation Hill and Hunchback tracks, he believes that all current works should cease until the council has consulted with the majority of the community to avoid the destruction of the “unique resource.” If elected onto council, Mr Clifton would like to focus on financial responsibility, prioritising spending, and the active completion of projects with the help of future planning and strategic focus.

BORDER resident Ant Packer believes she has the “can do” attitude to make a real impact in ensuring the growth of Wodonga is inclusive of all. Ms Packer said Wodonga’s challenge was to focus on youth unemployment. Ms Packer hopes to bring a diverse set of skills and qualifications in business, community development and public land management. She has nearly three decades of experience in working with non-government organisations, community groups and a working knowledge of how all tiers of government operate. Ms Packer is passionate about achieving effective listening and respectful collaborations between council and the community, turning around youth employment through leadership and collaborating with business and community organisations, diversification of Wodonga’s business hub through diverse new business and prioritising of council spending on projects. Sustainability will also be a priority for Ms Packer, who would like to see costs reduced in the delivery of services through investing in renewables, reducing waste and smarter infrastructure programs.

HOPEFUL for a positive change for Wodonga, 27-year-old Galvin Dunlop believes that a selection of new councillors would bring fresh ideas and a “positive” outlook for the future of Wodonga. Mr Dunlop immigrated from Northern Ireland to Wodonga with his family in 1997, seeking not only a change of scenery, but also more opportunities and a better lifestyle. He spent the latter part of his primary school and high school years in Wodonga and completed a degree in Bachelor of Arts majoring in history and politics. Mr Dunlop currently manages a local business and his experience has helped him to recognise opportunities to invest in local businesses and help them grow. He believes Wodonga Council has made some “bad” decision over the years including bad investments and unsustainable spending. If elected onto council, Mr Dunlop would like to see the reduction of rates, help bring more investment into the area through new businesses and tourism, and the promotion of a cleaner environment. COMMUNITY consultation as part of the decision-making process by council is one of the many goals of Veronique Janel if she were to be elected on to Wodonga Council. The mother of two has lived in the region for 15 years pursuing a better lifestyle to escape the congestion of the city. With over 26 years of extensive management and financial experience, Ms Janel currently works in the private sector in both state and local government, focusing on research management and budget management. Prospectively, Ms Janel would like to ensure the community gets the benefits they deserve by monitoring budget spending. “I would like to contribute to budget management oversight to make sure they are investing in community priorities so that there is no wastage and the community has a say as to where the money is allocated,’ she said. “If we involve the community right from the start, then the final outcome will make more sense to the majority of the community.”

AWARD-WINNING senior journalist and first-time candidate David Johnston knows all too well about being a voice for the community. Having been a Border Mail journalist for 21 years, Mr Johnston has covered sport, general news and local government news throughout Wodonga and its region. Mr Johnston has held volunteer positions in local sport and radio including Wodonga Junior Football League, Ovens and Murray Football League Hall of Fame and the O&M swimming association. Over the years Mr Johnston has become “critical” of the Wodonga council which he believes has become a case of “put up or shut up”, which partly led to his interest to run for councillor. If elected, Mr Johnston promises to be “approachable” and “accountable” to ratepayers. His priorities will include the reviewing and monitoring of charges and council expenditure, keeping rates at CPI, business growth and investment to the Wodonga CBD and the stage one progress of the Baranduda Fields sporting complex.

PETER Smith has had his sights set on joining cancel for the past three years and wants to see the city grow and prosper by attracting new businesses and families to the area. Mr Smith has resided in Wodonga for over 30 years now with his wife Pia and three daughters moving here as an already qualified auto-mechanic of over 35 years, specialising in agricultural and construction equipment. Having taken on the responsibility of leading a $30 million business with a multi-national machinery company, Mr Smith believes he has acquired exceptional business and leadership skills. “I’ve certainly got the interest in the business aspect of it,” he said. “I learned a lot about business, what could go wrong and problem solving. “But I’m not a one-issue person and I’ve got a common sense approach to everything put in front of me.” Mr Smith believes the challenges Wodonga currently faced included increasing costs of living and the current level of council debt.

BRIAN Mitchell has “big plans” to try and help rid Wodonga’s debt brought on by council and make it in to one of the most sought after lifestyle locations in Australia, if he is to be elected onto council. Mr Mitchell and his wife moved from Albury to Wodonga in 1988 to settle in to their newly built home on the outskirts of Wodonga. Coming from an extensive farming background and having owned a small business franchise as well as working as a local computer industry pioneer, Mr Brian knows all too well about living in the regional city and the diversity of the people in it. Mr Mitchell’s connection and familiarity to the community is demonstrated through his participation at the Wodonga Tennis Centre, serving a number of years with Wodonga Rotary and as a lifelong member of Wodonga Apex Club. He said he would like to “contribute to the community” by being involved in a strategic plan to help move Wodonga forward in to the future.

I.T. SPECIALIST and former teacher at TAFE NSW Lubosh Hanuska believes that Wodonga can become a ‘Smart City’ and more visible as a destination for students, new businesses and tourists alike. In 2000, Mr Hanuska moved to Wodonga with his wife and children and obtained a job as an IT teacher at Tafe NSW and today remains passionate about youth education, employment, and sporting opportunities. “I believe that local government must look at opportunity for young people and how education is being supported here.” Mr Hanuska is also involved in a range of not-for-profit organisations supporting community groups and sporting clubs. He said having now retired from TAFE NSW, he was free to pursue another career. As a Wodonga councillor he believes he would offer independence and equal representation to all ratepayers and he would strongly support Council’s Digital Strategy to ensure growth in jobs as the city becomes connected to the NBN.

MICHAEL Fraser is a current Wodonga councillor and resident of 30 years who hopes to further contribute to the rapidly growing city of Wodonga. He aims to do so by helping provide “real living” and assist with the growth of employment opportunities for future generations. He was successful in joining council in 2012 and has since contributed to the growth of the city over the past four years. While he believes that Wodonga Council has achieved a significant amount in recent years, he also recognises that there is still a lot more work to be done and hopes to get the opportunity to continue his work on transforming the CBD and creating a place where children would enjoy living, working and raising a family into the future. WODONGA resident of 26 years, Libby Hall, is motivated to become an advocate and an independent voice for the residents of Wodonga if elected on to council. Mrs Hall and her husband have raised two children and now own and operate a local building business. Through her experience in running a business, she believes she has the adequate business skills to offer on council. Mrs Hall said that while Wodonga was a ‘rapidly growing city’, it needed to have an accountable and transparent strategic plan as the growth continued. Having been a member of the Wodonga Rate Payers Association (WRPA) for 15 years, Mr Hall has always had a keen interest in the city’s governance, prosperity and direction. Her concern with Wodonga’s unaffordable and unsustainable increasing rates has made her determined to take action to try and help those who are least able to afford the rising rates including pensioners, renters and those on fixed incomes. YOUNG solicitor Adam Koster believes that the highest priority of council must be to support local businesses and jobs. As a member of Ratepayer Association Wodonga, Mr Koster has recognised concern in the community about rates and the level of local government debt. “I will commit to resisting any further spending commitments, until such time as the debt is repaid and rates are kept in line with the present cap of CPI,” he said. Youth engagement and employment, community safety and support for veterans are also issues that Mr Koster would engage with if he were to be elected. He would also seek to arrange a business advisory committee to be in conjunction with Wodonga Chamber of Commerce to ensure that Wodonga maintains its competitive edge in attracting investment to the area. Mr Koster is committed to an open, accountable and transparent local government and one that seeks to fully engage the community in the decisionmaking process.

QUALIFIED carpenter Ron Mildren’s platform is to improve senior management accountability, responsibility and transparency on council. Mr Mildren has a bachelor degree in town and regional planning and a background in construction, economic development, consultancy and senior management in local government. If elected as a councillor, Mr Mildren would like to focus on improving council decision-making processes and procedures as one of his priorities. He believes there is a need for an “efficiency review” to remove unnecessary expenditure. Mr Mildren said he did not hold “personal and political ambition” beyond Wodonga Council and had a specialised interest in business attraction and facilitation. His presence in the local music, social and local sporting communities also drives his intentions to make the council more pro-active in maintaining roads, public parks, and the improvements of sporting and community facilities.

ALISON Reed’s love for the Wodonga community has helped with her decision to run for councillor She hopes to work towards providing strong leadership through collaboration, respecting and listening to community needs, and advocating for residents about issues that impact them. Her experience in the role as an executive officer at the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce, and also in advocating for Hovel Street to remain open back in 2013, shows her commitment to working closely with the business community and her interest to help it thrive. During her time working with UnitingCare Wodonga and participating on a number of boards and leadership teams in Wodonga, Ms Reed developed strong relationships in retail, manufacturing and the notfor-profit and community sectors. If elected onto council, she hopes to work with a team who will work constructively and form a healthy leadership that can successfully guide the City of Wodonga over the next four years, and build stronger connections between the business community and Wodonga Council.

HAVING lived in the local area for 22 years, Trevor White hopes to see Wodonga become more sport-friendly and utilise the open space for sporting development. Mr White, 48, currently works as a reliability engineer at the local paper mill and is heavily involved in sport in the region. For the past six years, he has been the president of the Wodonga Wolves Basketball Association and involved in many aspects of football, from AusKick to his involvement in the Ovens and Murray League. His involvement with sporting clubs has given him a unique insight into the issue Wodonga sport clubs currently face with trying to get more support from council. He believes that sports development is being “neglected”, and would like to see further improvements in sport facilities, recreational spaces and spaces for children to play and be active in, which would also create opportunity to attract tourism in to the region.

CURRENT Wodonga councillor of 10 years, John Watson, is determined to be on council another term to help continue to shape the future of Wodonga through planning of the Baranduda Fields, building strong partnerships with all levels of government and developing greater interaction and communication with community. With an extensive background in rural farming, Mr Watson also has experience in operating a small business franchise. His current role as a youth case manager demonstrates his passion to continue to support the growth of business to help bring employment opportunities for youth, investment for new industry and jobs and promoting a strong and vibrant community service sector. Mr Watson also wishes to focus on creating a senior friendly environment for the future and meet the needs of the ageing population. As an independent community-focused councillor, Mr Watson is “open” and “respectful” of everyone’s opinions and wishes to continue driving strong leadership with a “great” team behind him.

FAMILY man Ray Snell is “tired” and “frustrated” with the negativity imprinted on the current council and believes that he could help improve community involvement in the decision-making process of council. Mr Snell has extensive experience in a range of roles requiring high responsibility including in the financial sector, disability and aged care services. Mr Snell moved to Wodonga with his family in 1977 to commence his employment at National Mutual before moving to Wodonga as manager for the North East region. Mr Snell believes that his financial leadership skills which he acquired through his involvement in various positions of high responsibility would make him a suitable councillor for Wodonga. If elected onto council, he would work towards improving consultation between the community and council in the decision-making process, monitor budget outcomes, support not-for-profit organisations, improve and grow youth education and employment opportunities, and support the environment and agriculture sectors. “I stand for positivity, integrity and prosperity for our council,” he said.

EXPERIENCED community health advocate Kat Bennett would like to see improvement on the communication between the council and the community as part of decision-making. The 28-year-old early years health promotion portfolio co-ordinator at Gateway Health Wodonga believes her seven years of experience in local government and her knowledge of how the councils operate will help her better reach out to the community to promote a positive change. “My volunteer work in governance level roles in local organisations, such as YES Youth and Family Services, has given me skills and training in strategic planning and high-level financial accountability,” she said. Ms Bennett believes that her extensive involvement in the community has helped her to understand people on a “personal level” and enabled her to understand what Wodonga community’s need are. She hopes to engage the community on important issues such as Hill Top Activation Strategy, High Street revitalisation and the three-bin system to assist with decision-making and planning by Wodonga Council.

SMALL business owner Dawn George would like to see communication, consultation and action between council and traders strengthened if elected onto council. With a background in banking, real estate and retail, including owning and operating several small businesses, Ms George aims to bring her expertise to the council. Ms George has lived in the region for 44 years, running a business in the central business area for the last 25 years, which eventually led to her interest in running as a council candidate. She worked closely with council as part of the High Street Revitalisation Reference Group. Ms George wants to focus on the survival of small business during the anticipated upgrades to road infrastructure and directing traffic off the freeway to promote tourism and spending in Wodonga CBA. In addition, Ms George has been an active member of various sporting groups and a life member of Wodonga Hockey Club and would like to further support the sporting community by helping to improve sporting facilities and participation.

LIBERAL Democrat Tim Quilty is running for council to help cut waste and cap rate rises. Mr Quilty believes that Wodonga Council in the past has spent ratepayers’ money on non-priority projects due to the high rates and promises to “work to keep rate rises below inflation.” As a former qualified account, Mr Quilty has worked in both the public and private sectors, and has experience in auditing and local councils. Mr Quilty would also like to improve council transparency and openness to make sure that all decisions of council match the decisions of the majority in the community. “We need an end to secret meetings, and we need to stamp down on commercial-inconfidence contracts that hide what is going on,” Mr Quilty said. “We need to live-stream and podcast council meetings - nothing should be hidden.” He is also prepared to say “no” to activist groups and council staff who may intend to fund irrelevant projects and promote wasteful spending.

CURRENT Mayor Anna Speedie is passionate about seeing Wodonga move forward and believes a strong and innovative leadership can ensure Wodonga continues to deliver greater opportunities, jobs and growth. Mrs Speedie has served on the Wodonga Council for 11 years and during her time has seen the delivery of major projects and redevelopment of the city. She has a background in international banking and finance, marketing and has owned her own business. As a mother, Mrs Speedie would like to ensure that Wodonga will continue to become a “safe, family friendly and progressive city.” Mrs Speedie would like to see a stronger vision for the future of Wodonga which is at a pivotal point in its history. Assisting this vision will be the continued support and growth of businesses to create jobs, the careful planning of infrastructure and upgrades to the CBA precinct, the improvements and support for the sport group facilities with the lobbying with state and federal governments to maximise funding opportunities.

TRUE blue local Richard Shannon aims to increase support for local businesses through the adoption of a ‘buy local’ campaign, as part of the council’s purchasing policy. Mr Shannon has lived in the area his whole life and bought a house at the age of 19 while undertaking his apprenticeship as a fitter machinist. A bad motorbike accident saw him pursue a career in drafting, before owning and operating a small business maintaining lawns and gardens. If selected as councillor, the father of three hopes to see the improvement of safety around road crossings for children and pedestrians and would like to establish a strong consultation process between the community and the council on major projects to secure the best outcome for the community through respecting their wishes. Mr Shannon believes he is in a unique position to help create change in Wodonga as he communicates with residents daily as part of his business.

Senior celebrations take off IT WAS all music and dancing at The Cube on Monday morning for the opening of Senior Celebrations festival, with Australian music artist Grace Knight there to kick off the month-long Senior Celebrations in 2016. Grace Knight, a well-established entertainer, with a career spanning 40 years was “thrilled” to be a part of the opening of the Seniors Festival in Wodonga this year. She performed various songs from her album saying it was important for seniors to

be able to connect with music and to get out of the house and socialise. “It’s very exciting, it’s a lot of fun, I think it’s a marvellous thing the government is doing putting on seniors week as it gets people out from their houses and gets them celebrating with their friends,” Ms Knight said. “I think music and songs and the stories that are within the songs are a lot easier to remember when there is a tune attached to them.

“As we get older we tend to forget and I think tunes help you to remember the songs and that helps you to remember your own story and whatever you were doing at the time your learnt that song.” Over 150 events across Wodonga will be held throughout October as part of the Senior Celebrations 2016, which will include bus tours, carpet bowls, bingo, dancing lessons and much more. Time to lift the lid on suicide THE single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 is suicide. To help out where they can, the Rotary Club of West Wodonga will be hosting an evening event on 15 October. ‘Lift the Lid’ is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for mental health illnesses and issues. This particular evening will be based on mental health issues experienced by current and medically discharged military personnel, with all proceeds being donated to Rotary Health and the Dogs 4 Diggers Program. It will encompass two keynote speakers, Lieutenant-General Brian Ashley Power and Young Diggers president John Jarrett, who will be speaking on forms and treatments of PTSD within the military services as well as a Q&A at the end of the session. Rotary Club of West Wodonga administration officer Clive Faul says men don’t often talk about how they’re feeling and through the Lift the Lid event they hope to help lift the stigma around men suffering with mental health problems. “This event aims to lift the lid on mental illness in order that people are prepared to talk about their issues and I’m hoping it will reduce the amount of suicides,” he said. “I’m concerned about my fellow man as in there are so many people suffering from mental illnesses who aren’t prepared to talk at all.” Lt-Gen Power was deployed to Bougainville in 1998 on Operation Belisi as Chief of Staff and in 1999 he was deployed as the Colonel Operations for INTERFET in East Timor. In 2014 he retired from the Army and became Senior Mentor in De-

fence at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies (CDSS). Mr Faul said Lt-Gen Power considered himself responsible for military personnel returning from their service and was interested in being involved in the event to help raise awareness. “Lieutenant-General Ash Power has been with the army for over 40-odd years and was involved in mentoring these men and sending them in to battle in Afghanistan so he considers himself responsible for their well-being afterwards,” Mr Faul said. MC on the night will be Dale Skinner, who has previously suffered from severe mental illness. Mr Faul said Mr Skinner now looked at what his situation was “whole-heartedly” and brings the fun out of it while reflecting on his challenges. Mental health issues including anxiety and post-traumatic stress are something that ex-military personnel often experience as a repercussion of their high-stress jobs. The companionship and assistance of dogs has been proven to help combat stress and mental illness and that’s where Dogs 4 Diggers comes in. As part of its continued involvement with Rotary Health, the Rotary Club of West Wodonga wanted to put on this event to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health while raising proceeds that will help individual’s suffering with PTSD with costs of looking after their new canine. FARMERS were left feeling relieved after the Federal Government scrapped the 32.5 per cent working visa backpacker tax announced in the 2015 Budget, and instead settled for a 19 per cent rate last week. The new tax will be implemented at the start of January 2017, which comes as good news to farmers who feared a higher tax rate would deter working holiday makers from working at Australian farms. But the new tax rate was one change among a few that were recently announced by the Treasurer Scott Morrison. The time backpackers are able to spend with one employer was extended to a period of 12 months and the visa application charge was reduced by $50 from $440 to $390, to lower the cost for working holidaymakers. Indi MP Cathy McGowan responded to the decision by government to scrap the pending tax rate, saying the government should learn from its mistake. Her reference was to the proposed childcare changes that she holds close to her heart, saying: “It is another example of this ‘act first and think later’ mentality”. She called the government to commit to conducting extensive research before making decisions that would impact on regional and rural Australia. “The outcome was good, but rural and regional people should not have been put through the rigmarole, expense and stress of having a tax that was clearly damaging hanging over their heads for so long,” Ms McGowan said.

Wool warriors in right click By Larissa Kuzeff LOCAL knitters turned their needles to a good cause last week to give hope to those who need it most. A small knitting group known as the ‘Guardian Angels’, got together for morning tea at Wodonga Guardian Pharmacy on Thursday to appreciate their efforts of contributing their skills to help out struggling families in the community. Each year the group gets together with their knitted items and present them to a nominated charity. This year their donation was passed on to Uniting Care Wodonga, who will distribute the unique knits to local families they believe will not only keep a struggling family warm, but can also provide a sentimental gift to those going through hard times. Uniting Care Wodonga Agency Manager Naomi Jansen said that the unique knits would bring hope to families in the community who were suffering and struggling to keep up with rising living costs. “With all the knitwear that we are receiving we are seeing smiles on people’s faces when they come in,” Mrs Jansen said. “We see new bubs coming in, where the mums are doing it really tough, and for us to be able to give them hand-knitted

Hundreds of items are produced in the Wodonga community and range from baby bonnets to scarves, booties, toys and jumpers for children. Local knitter Beryl Taylor has been a Guardian Angel since 2003 and said that she enjoyed knitting for those in need and for her to knit these items gave her a bit of hope too.

“I love my knitting and I love being able to help someone out because I don’t have anyone else to knit for so I have somewhere to place it,” Mrs Taylor said. I get the satisfaction of knowing I’m doing something good for someone else and I enjoy coming down here to the Guardian Angels morning tea.” The Guardian Angel Knitting Program is a program held annually throughout Australia and during its 18 years running, has donated over two million knitted garments for families in need.

Hard Yacka on mountain bikes By Larissa Kuzeff YACKANDANDAH locals will be pedalling into spring at the opening of the new 50-kilometre Stanley State Forest mountain bike trail on 9 October. The five-year project was an initiative started by local bike enthusiasts who had previously created unofficial bike trails through the Yackandandah forest and saw the need for more official trails in the local area. While there are other bike trail options in the local area, president of Yack Tracks James Lacey said the trails were mainly limited to roads. “There’s been biking in the Stanley State Forest for quite a long time but they were restricted to roads and not in the forest,” he said. “It was also a safety concept to keep bikes off the road and they are all single tracks wide enough for the mountain bikes.” The bike trail starts three kilometres out of Yackandandah and consists of challenging, cross-country style single tracks with signs that have been created in an ecologically sustainable way in order to protect the environment. It is also expected that the trail will attract both cyclists and bushwalkers who will be able to enjoy the surrounding of the forest in a safe and sustainable environment, with access being limited only to such users. Mr Lacey said the new bike trail didn’t just benefit the local biking community, but was also beneficial to the whole community to help bring in economic value to Yackandandah. “For the biking community

With the year coming to a near end, the event is also one that will enable Riverwood to reflect on a successful year, welcoming new residents, and continuing to enhance its quality lifestyle village. While older persons are sometimes overlooked for employment, restricted from social services and stereotyped, at Riverwood residents are able to live a comfortable, vibrant, social and active lifestyle. Surgeon puts best feet forward ORTHOPEADIC surgeon Gordan Slater of Specialist Foot and Ankle Surgery in Lavington will be chairperson for the Hallux valgus (bunion) part of the Global Foot and Ankle Congress held in China in May 2017. The second annual meeting of the Global Foot and Ankle Congress aims to bring together international foot and ankle experts and leaders to exchange knowledge and experience in their field. It involves sessions based on forefoot, midfoot, hindfoot, ankle surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopy and also offers participants the opportunity to interact and interchange through posters, open discussions and program projects. Dr Slater has a keen interest in ‘minimally invasive foot surgery’ which uses a tiny titanium cannulated screw to operate on bunions, ankles and feet, speeding up what could otherwise be a prolonged recovery phase. He has also performed minimally invasive surgery on his patients for over the past three years and in that time has also contributed various research articles to medical journals. Dr Slater said he was eager to talk on the technique which can be applied to anywhere in the foot and also the subcutaneous bone in the lower leg. “Minimally invasive surgery is one of those things that’s been initially developed in the UK and France and has been going a couple years in Australia now,” Dr Slater said. “The technique means I can do a bunion procedure without stitching and I only have to use steristrips. “It’s a modification of a dental instrument you can divide the bone with the instrument and then you can shift around it to get the correction. It’s been really popular in this region and Sydney,” he said. The conference will also include a cocurrent exhibition showcasing the latest products and technologies. Dr Slater said the conference was important because its experts, leaders and innovators in foot and ankle technology and research share knowledge and ideas. “It’s important to transfer knowledge between nations in terms of what leading technologies are available particularly from countries like Australia because typically we are leaders in many areas.” The feet are a vital part of the body containing one quarter of the body’s bones and are what enables a person to get from point “A to point B”, Dr Slater said. “Your feet are your foundation, that’s where it all starts,” he said. “Even the humble bunion, which is often dismissed, can cause alterations that have ramifications right up through your whole body - from ankle and knee problems to back pain. “It’s important to look after your feet particularly if you suffer from diabetes, arthritis, strains, bunions and chronic pains.”

Sugarplum Fairy drops in LOCAL ballet students are set to join the Imperial Russian Ballet Company on stage in The Nutcracker at Albury Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 18 October. The Nutcracker performance comes hot on the heels of the Imperial Russian Ballet’s sell-out performances last year of Swan Lake and it tells a Christmas story of children who travel to the land of sweets, featuring Tchaikovsky’s recognisable music score including the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy. In August, students aged between six and 11 from the Regional Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) had tuition from the Imperial Russian Ballet Company dancers. The ballet company makes a point of recruiting children from local ballet schools in the cities that it performs in around the world. The Imperial Russian Ballet Company was formed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist Gediminas Taranda. Tale of how the west was dumb

The Magnificent Seven (MA 15+) Starring: Chris Pratt, Matt Bomer, Denzel Washington A STAR cast and a moustache twirling bad guy are the highlights of this re-telling of the classic Western, or the brilliant Seven Samurai - but if you are looking for something deep, meaningful or even something destined to be a classic, then don’t look here. This is a popcorn movie with a basic plot and most of the usual Western tropes. With a body count Shakespeare would be proud of (or perhaps would find excessive) director Antoine Fuqua's “modern vision” of the classic story has more in common with the misfit ensemble group movies Avengers and Suicide Squad than the original source material. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven

Local Sport Cycling style comes home By Paul Ingwersen LOCAL pro cyclist Neil van der Ploeg has returned from a four month stint racing overseas with his Avanti IsoWhey Sports team and is looking forward to bringing that new experience into the Australian summer season. The team raced in Korea then spent the European summer months in the Wallonne part of Belgium before competing in two tours in China on the way home. While van der Ploeg’s best individual result was a third in the second stage of the Tour of Korea, cycling is a team sport and his team picked up results including second overall in China. “The European racing is really different to the Australian scene,” van der Ploeg said. “We were racing many one-day races while in Australia other than Grafton and Warrnambool the National

Road Series are multi stage tours.” The Belgium racing was either kermesse style or UCI ranked 1.1 or 1.2 category races over 150-200 km. Kermesse translates to fair or carnival and the racing is generally laps of a 10-20 km circuit, including the main street in a town filled with people enjoying the cycling, entertainment and beers. “The longer one-day races included pro tour teams such as Etixx Quickstep and Lotto Soudal, giving us the chance to race against former world champion Tom Boonen and Paris Roubaix winner Nicki Terpstra,” he said. “This included on their preferred terrain of cobbles in northern France and some of the famous cobble climbs in Flanders such as the Muur van Geraardsbergen.” Van der Ploeg was assisted in his preparation with advice from former pro local cyclist Rhys Pollock who spent many years in Europe.

“Another big difference in the racing in Europe is the depth of every field. “In Australia there is a small number of riders normally capable of winning a race. In the European racing there is incredible depth with many possible winners.” His best moment overseas was the UCI category 1.1 GP Cerami which raced through the town that the Avanti IsoWhey sports team had made home. Van der Ploeg finished 14th and was attacking in the final lap but unable to make the podium. On that day it almost came together, avoiding the punctures, crashes and mechanicals. In Europe the team also enjoyed only having to travel 60-90 minutes to race, rather than the customary three to five hours’ drive in Australia plus possible air travel. This luxury of a small country disappeared once they arrived in China

where organisers ran two tours, with little geographic logic on linking the routes as it travelled across the country. This meant long transfers between stages and some rest days spent travelling by bus and plane. “China is an adventure and chaotic. The racing is great and you just have to go with the adventure.” was how van der Ploeg described it. “There are things you can’t understand. For example, after one stage we had a 700 km transfer by bus towards Mongolia. “Our team manager had to drive our team car in a convoy and the other teams’ cars left without him. “He didn’t know the route and had no mobile phone connection so was emailing the race organisers. “One hour into the bus transfer they turned us all around and went back for him, meaning the whole convoy got there hours later.”

Neil van der Ploeg has competed overseas in cross country skiing and mountain biking. This summer season of European racing was another level. “In cross country skiing us Australians were always at a disadvantage as we have so few months on the snow here. “With the road racing we were able to compete and mix it with the best.” Van der Ploeg rated racing on the cobbles as one of the best experiences. “I’m a bigger rider so am suited for the cobbles,” he said. For him it was special to race on sectors used in the cycling monument races of Paris Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders. Van der Ploeg is taking a few weeks off the bike and plans to enjoy some walks in the Victorian alps before applying his international experience to his next race in January.

Knock’Hems drive through THE Knock’Hems will play off for third and fourth place in the State Wide Stampede Roller Derby following an impressive win at home at the weekend. All the fun, colour and action of one of Australia’s fastest growing sports came to the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre at the weekend with round five of the Stampede coming to town. Eight teams from around Victoria took part in the weekend event, the penultimate round of the competition. The Knock’Hems - a joint venture between the Albury-Wodonga and Wangaratta clubs, Murray River Derby Dames and North East Roller Derby (Nerds) - beat the Otway Growlers in a dominant performance 192-85. The win was enough to elevate them from the fifth-sixth play-off to the battle for third and fourth, sneaking in by just 1 per cent. The final round will be held on 26 November and will cap off a busy and successful season final season for The Knock’Hems. With both its feeder clubs growing quickly they will be able to field stand-alone teams next season which will mean more local derbies.
