The torn blue line Greater Dandenong’s police taskforce boom is either cutting crime or encouraging criminals - depending on who is asked.

The Police Association called for the specialised teams to be cut after the Crime Statistics Agency revealed a 19 per cent jump in crime in the police service area (PSA) in the year to 30 June.

“We’ve heard far too much spin about special taskforces,” assistant secretary Inspector Bruce McKenzie said.

“The crime stats emphatically show they’re not working.

“The time for indulgent experimentation and pet projects are over when it comes to police resources.”

But Southern Metro Region Superintendent Paul Hollowood said the Frontline Tactical Unit, Divisional Response Unit, Taskforce Regarder and Operation Cosmas were helping to drive down crime.

Police Minister Lisa Neville raved about the taskforces during a visit to the Dandenong Police Station on Wednesday 28 September, the day before the statistics were released.

She also said Dandenong would receive more officers fresh from the academy as soon as April.

Ms Neville said 20-plus police custody officers had freed up an extra 10 police a day to patrol the streets.

Insp Hollowood said these police were fed into Frontline Tactical Unit, which started operating from Dandenong in late August.

“The 30-member unit is responsible for targeting street crime, public order and community

reassurance,” he said.

“At the same time the Divisional Response Unit commenced operation, bringing together specialist detectives to proactively target serious and organised crime offending in this area.

“It has come about from amalgamating a number of smaller tasking groups that we had operating into one larger group.

“We are confident that these new initiatives, aimed at putting more police into frontline operations, will bring about a reduction of crime.”

Ms Neville said the Frontline Tactical Unit officers “really expressed a love of their job and being in the unit because it’s been very much about making a difference”.

She said they had arrested nearly 60 people and charged them with more than 100 offences.

“I also talked to the people involved in the Cosmas youth offending side as well,” she said.

The unit investigates aggravated burglaries and carjackings and has made more than 180 arrests since May. “They’ve had significant inroads,” Ms Neville said.

But Insp McKenzie said taskforces robbed police stations of the ability to provide a proper visible police presence, which was proven to prevent crime.

“There should be a substantial injection of police in Victoria and they should be on the frontline,” he said.

“It’s an indictment on the state of police numbers that we now have fewer patrol vans on each shift in Greater Dandenong than we did 20 years ago.”

Family violence crime rise

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong has the fifth highest crime rate in the state, latest Crime Statistics Agency figures show.

The Police Service Area (PSA) registered a 19 per cent jump in offences in the year to 30 June compared with the previous 12 months, from 17,414 to 20,728.

The figures, released on Thursday 29 September, showed a 13.4 per cent increase in crimes across the state.

The increase per 100,000 people in Greater Dandenong was 16.6 per cent, compared to 11.2 per cent for Victoria.

The highest increase was in Dandenong, at 28.2 per cent, and Noble Park recorded the lowest, at 0.7 per cent.

Springvale South was perhaps the most surprising, recording a 19.8 per cent increase, while Springvale registered a 6.7 per cent jump, and Keysborough 11 per cent.

Southern Metro Region Superintendent Paul Hollowood said any increase in crime was concerning, but it was important to put it in context.

“The rise in assaults and related offences is primarily as a result of an increase in the reporting of family violence incidents,” he said.

“Likewise, family violence has also influenced the rise in stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour offences.”

Figures showed a 64.4 per cent jump in those crimes, from 390 to 641 instances.

Insp Hollowood attributed the 98.3 per cent jump in justice procedures, from 347 to 688, to enforcing family violence breaches “and also the contravention of bail conditions”.

“We continue to encourage an increased reporting of family violence as our area already experiences some of the highest level of family violence in the state,” he said.

Insp Hollowood said thefts of and from cars drove the 42 per cent increase in theft and 19.4 per cent jump in robbery.

He said this was associated with “the youthnetworked offending phenomenon that has been impacting all of metropolitan Melbourne”.

“The Southern Metro Region Crime Team continues to focus upon youth-networked offending, having made over 160 arrests since May,” he said.

He said the 53.3 per cent increase in dangerous and negligent acts endangering people, from 159 to 244, resulted from efforts to tackle hoon driving.

“The Regarder Task Force was very successful in identifying and prosecuting the main organisers and participants in this activity that used to occur regularly in Dandenong South,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp also praised Regarder, during a media conference on Thursday 29 September.

He said it led to 54 arrests and the seizure of several vehicles.

Capt McGifford was tasked with laying the groundwork for a new Salvos Dandenong headquarters.

“That meant bringing our services together and getting them on the same page,” he said.

“It’s increased our capacity to respond to people in need.

Claire Emmerton will take on Capt McGifford’s role from 1 March.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said the fire caused substantial damage to the vehicle, which was towed.

She said there was no evidence of an accelerant and the investigation was ongoing.

Assault charge push-back A Cranbourne West man will fight charges after allegedly punching then pushing another man off a railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks in Noble Park.

Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, faces charges including assault, recklessly causing serious injury and reckless conduct over the incident at Yarraman station about 5.53pm on 8 April.

Police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 September that the victim had suffered a permanent limp as a result of the incident but were awaiting further medical records.

Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson said Tangatapoto claimed he acted in self-defence after the victim allegedly threatened to stab him with a hypodermic needle.

“There’ll be an argument if what my client says is correct - does that justify his response?

“Was that reasonable and appropriate to what my client says confronted him.”

Tangatapoto’s claim however could not be substantiated by police - who did not search the victim’s bag at the time, Mr Eidelson said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Mr Eidelson that police at the time “wouldn’t have a reason” to search the victim’s bag.

The next hearing is at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.

Police are going back to basics to tackle a spike in pedestrian injuries in Dandenong.

They’re appealing for people travelling on foot to look left and right before crossing the road, following a 30 per cent jump in serious injuries to pedestrians in the Southern Metro Region in the 12 months to August.

Dandenong, Frankston and St Kilda accounted for most of the increase, from 133 to 173 incidents.

Inspector Alison Crombie said all of the injuries could have been avoided.

“Despite this knowledge, it appears that complacency and distraction are the main causes of the injuries,“ she said.

“Don’t ever cross the road, even at a crossing, without checking to see that oncoming traffic is actually going to stop for you.

“You may have right of way at a crossing, but you should never assume the driver has seen you.”

Insp Crombie said it was also important for motorists to ensure they were driving within the speed limit and looking out for pedestrians.

“As much as this is a city with a lot of need, this is a city with a lot of capacity. People just need a hand sometimes, and a bit of hope.”

Dandenong Salvation Army Corps Officer Captain Stuart McGifford has delivered that hand and hope to Greater Dandenong for the past four years.

In January he’ll make his way to Alice Springs with his wife Nari and two children, aged 7 and 5, to start a new challenge with the Salvos.

“The Salvation Army has an appointmentsbased system,” he said.

It brought him to Dandenong in January 2013.

“I grew up in the northern suburbs and I worked around the north and western suburbs,” he said.

“I could barely find my way to Dandenong.

“My mother was worried about me moving here.

“She had nothing to worry about.”

Capt McGifford enjoyed great neighbours and being able to walk his children to school.

“The kids have thrived at school, and had amazing friends of all different backgrounds and cultural understandings,” he said.

“My kids are richer for the multiculturalism they’ve experienced here.

“We’re a bit anxious about the move because it’s the first one they’ll remember.

“They don’t remember moving to Dandenong, but they will remember leaving here because it’s a great place.”

Capt McGifford will hold his last church service on Christmas Day and a farewell barbecue on Tuesday 27 December.

“Then I’ll hook the caravan up and drive 2500 kilometres over two weeks,” he said.

“It’s certainly a big challenge.”

But one Dandenong has prepared him to handle. Asylum seeker arrivals were at their peak when he arrived.

“We were continually seeing people being released into the community with nothing,” he said.

“We just scrounged furniture and supplies.

“We threw open our welfare doors to asylum seekers and spent every last cent we could find.

Persons liable are hereby required to report at 9am on 5 October 1916 at shire halls in the district of Flinders. Any person who

The entire areas of Berwick and Cranbourne shires could be included in the Melbourne Metropolitan Planning Area within 25 years.

Portions of these shires and all of Knox and Sherbrooke shires could be included within a few years.

This has been suggested in a report by the Town and Country Planning Association to the Minister for Local Government, Mr Hamer.

The report said: “The metropolitan planning area should be such that the planning authority has effective control and will not

have to face a repetition of the problem of being unable to cope with development outside the boundaries of the planning area, as is now the case.”

20 years ago 7 October 1996 Watch Out: Fines Hike Motorists who fail to heed parking laws will be slugged with fatter fines.

Greater Dandenong Council last Wednesday began issuing the new fines which have been increased by up to 66 per cent.

The council’s residential amenity supervisor, Mr Peter Halliday, said level one restrictions, which come under local laws, would be increased from $25 to $35.

This category includes parking at an expired meter, parking illegally in permit zones, not paying the fee and parking for a period longer than fixed.

Motorists will be hit even more for parking fines which fall under state laws. Fines for parking in no standing and clearway zones have jumped to $100, up from $40.

5 years ago 3 October 2011 Rain reigns Greater Dandenong experienced its wettest September day since 1984 last Wednesday when 37 millimetres of rain dumped on the city in 24 hours, causing minor flooding as drains struggled to cope with the downpour.

Greater Dandenong has already well exceeded its average monthly rainfall of 66 millimetres for September, with 80 millimetres recorded up until 9am last Friday.

Bush spread out for miles around The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

We explored almost to their source the pristine Eumemmerring and Dandenong creeks.

We wandered the almost virgin bush of the Police Paddocks and the foothills of the Dandenongs as if they were our own back yard.

We roamed for miles through bush-covered hills and gullies filled with tree ferns. We encountered acres of tall gun-barrel straight ti-tree, so thick we could not squeeze between it.

We explored swamps filled with paperbarks and bulrushes and through vast areas of wattle and scrub and areas thick with gum saplings

BACK JACK JOHNSON which still grew thickly in many areas even right in central Dandenong.

We roamed the moss and maidenhair fern covered areas and the native grasses and heath and where bracken fern grew nearly six feet tall.

There were still many grasstrees throughout the areas, with their black trunks and green fronds and long straight flowers that looked like a kangaroo or wallaby tail.

We picked the broad blue-green eucalyptus leaves and made whistles, or crushed them be-

tween our hands and rubbed the fragrant oil on our faces.

We chewed the clear amber gum which oozed from the branches and trunks of the wattles and picked the brightly-coloured fruit from the many kangaroo-apple bushes.

We stared in amazement at the brilliant colours of the flocks of rosellas, mountain lowrys and grass parrots.

But when we roamed out to Narre Warren North, Hallam and Harkaway through the grasslands and bush that would become Doveton, Eumemmerring and Endeavour Hills the extent of the bird varieties became even more numerous.

If we weren’t at school we spent most of our time out in the bush or around the creeks.

We got lost for hours in the thick bush until we reached a clear spot where we could see a familiar landmark like the power line towers which were still being worked on at that time, or the open

wooden water channel from the Lysterfield Reservoir, which was still in use and had not yet been piped, from which we drank.

One of our biggest fears was that we would not reach our destination before it got dark, for in those days the darkness of the bush and timelessness of the land were total.

We spent almost all our daylight hours outdoors and a lot of the night-time as well.

We wandered our little market town of central Dandenong, and a favourite playground was the empty produce and stock markets.

We chased each other through the calf and sheep pens and up and down the loading ramps on the roadway which ran from Clow to King streets alongside the high corrugated iron fence of the showgrounds.

But if we jumped over the low fences of the sheep pens and landed on a sleeping drunk, we got out of there as fast as we could go.

Man is jailed for scalding partner

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 59-year-old Doveton pensioner has been jailed for deliberately scalding his de facto partner with boiling coffee, smothering her with a pillow and threatening to kill her in a sustained regime of family violence.

Gordon Austin was jailed for 18 months - followed by a two year community corrections order - after pleading guilty to four assault charges, threat to kill, intentionally causing injury and cannabis possession at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 26 September.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Austin’s consistent assaults - including two strikes to the partner’s face in the past year - was at the “higher end” of family violence.

With a previous conviction for injuring the partner in 2010, it added up to six years of “abuse - verbal and physical”, Mr Vandersteen said.

“If you assaulted (your partner) once (like this) you’d be looking at a term of jail.

“At what point would it stop?”

of re-offending due to his lack of insight, Mr Vandersteen noted.

“You’re a clear risk of re-offending if you don’t engage in treatment and rehabilitation.”

However, Austin’s remorseless views on the incidents had tempered in recent weeks.

The court had heard that in June, Austin had microwaved a cup of coffee to a hot temperature and screamed that he’d hurl it on the victim’s face.

Austin then threw it on her leg, burning and blistering her through her pants.

On 7 July, Austin accused the victim of seeing another man. He grabbed her by the hair, threw her against a wall, and spat in her face.

“You haven’t seen anything yet. I’ll kill you,” he told her.

On his arrest, he was found with 45 grams of cannabis in zip-lock bags. He showed no remorse, and was aggressive towards police, the court was told.

Mr Vandersteen had earlier handed down a four-year full intervention order protecting the partner.

Austin is due for release on 11 January, 2018.

His corrections order includes drug and mental health treatment, and judicial monitoring.

A Dandenong church will be blessing pets on Sunday 9 October.

Dandenong Fire Station supported its Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade colleagues during a time of need.

South-east region brigade administrative support officer (BASO) Lisa Hicks said the Nar Nar Goon crew attended the funeral of Captain Geoff Bramley’s wife Debra on Monday 19 September.

“Although it was a sad day for everyone, the volunteers were still mindful of keeping the community safe,” she said.

So the evening before the funeral, Capt Bramley called Dandenong’s Paul Carrigg to ask whether staff could step up to Nar Nar Goon for the day.

“It didn’t take long to organise a crew willing to accommodate the request,” Ms Hicks said.

“It proved that we can all still count on each other to the end.”

Three O’Reillys are eyeing seats on southeast councils ahead of the Saturday 22 October local government elections.

Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly is running for re-election, as is his Frankston City councillor brother Michael.

Their mum Barbara has nominated for the first time, in Mornington Peninsula Shire.

She said she’d heard enough of her two sons arguing about council issues at family barbecues and decided she could do better.

“Mum’s always given me good advice, to make sure I make fair decisions, and don’t get involved in deal making or tricky business,” Sean said.

“She’s been a support to me and I’m happy to help out with letterboxing her leaflets.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly delivered a pre-emptive farewell for colleague John Kelly at the Monday 26 September council meeting.

European cheeses bring big smiles

By Casey Neill Amalia Europe Cheese looks a little different these days, but still has cheese and smallgoods at its heart.

Mina Dawood’s mum Amalia set up the business in Hemmings Street, Dandenong, about 10 years ago.

“Mum passed away, so I ended up taking over the business. That was eight months ago,” he said.

“So now me and my sister Mirna run this shop.

“It was very much a traditional-style business.

Now we’ve funked it right up.

“What I’ve introduced is new products, in terms of our grocery, cold meats, frozen pastries, and the coffee and the sandwich bar.

“We do toasties, bagels and American hotdogs.

“The cheese that we use in our deli we use in our food that we serve.

“And our cold meats as well, our smallgoods, we incorporate those in our sandwiches.

“It gives our customers the opportunity to try what our products are like.”

The cheeses range in origin from France, Italy, Greece and Holland to Australia.

The smallgoods and grocery ranges also feature imported and locally made products.

“The San Daniele prosciutto comes in from Italy,” he said.

“The coffee is roasted here in Melbourne, but it’s a combination of Columbian and African beans.”

Mina said customers were “spinning out”.

“The couple that were here when you walked in, they’ve been our customers for the past 10 years,” he said.

“I’m really grateful that we’ve still been able to retain those people.”

New faces are coming through the doors, too.

“What we’re noticing is a lot of people who work in the area are coming in, purely just by seeing this retro looking-coffee machine,” he said,

“Once they try it they just keep coming back.

“It’s challenging, being on Hemmings Street, but I think we’ve got the right mindset.

“We’ve got 150 spaces across the road and ample parking in front of the shop.”

“The same with our American hot dogs, we’ll probably add some exciting flavours or have one different hot dog every week.

“In the near future, we’d be looking at doing breakfast.

“Our next phase is setting up our platter com-

ponent better to cater for the vast range of customers.”

Mina’s favourite product is the prosciutto, with grilled halloumi not far behind.

“That is like heaven. That first bite into halloumi is like ’wow’,” he said.

“Also, we’ve got saganaki. What I’ve been doing lately is throwing that in some flour and sprinkling chopped oregano on top.

“We’ve got nine different options in our chilli sauce range, which range from mild to burns you twice. They’re also available for tasting.

“They’re an all-natural, hand-crafted sauce.

There’s no preservatives or additives or anything like that in them.

“With our hotdogs, we’re doing a mad chilli dog so I’ve blended the chilli sauces and each sauce does a different thing.

“I’ve seen customers sweating profusely. They come back for more.”

Customers Helen and Bruno live a short walk away and popped in for some feta for a salad during the Journal’s visit.

Mina asked them what they were looking for in a cheese and what they enjoyed, before recommending a product.

They used to buy cheese from Amalia, and described the shop today as warm and welcoming.

“He’s put his mark on it. He’s made it more upmarket,” Helen said.

“You feel like you’re stepping into one of those gourmet shops in one of the trendy places of Melbourne.”

The husband and wife sat down for a coffee and added a filo pie and parmesan to their shopping.

“He knows his product,” Helen said.

“It’s great quality.”

Armed bandits raid two milk bars in 10 minutes

By Casey Neill Armed raiders struck two Greater Dandenong milk bars in the space of 10 minutes, police suspect.

The Coolavin Road milk bar owner emerged from his home, at the same Noble Park address, about 7.20am on Sunday 25 September to open for the day.

As he was putting out a sandwich board he noticed two men running toward the store’s front door.

“Both looked to be in their teens with slim builds and tall,” Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said.

One was wearing black pants, a black T-shirt, a black cap that he pulled a hood over, and a balaclava covering his face.

He was carrying a long, silver kitchen knife and a backpack.

Det Sen Const Jarvis said the other wore black pants, a hoodie pulled up over his head, and a balaclava on his face.

“The victim saw this and locked the front door, but remained outside,” she said.

The burglars tried to push the front door open, were surprised when it was locked and ran away.

About 7.30am, a similar incident occurred at a milk bar in Dunearn Road, Dandenong North less than two kilometres away on foot.

“It’s a possibility that they’re linked,” Det Sen Const Jarvis said.

A 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were in a home at the rear of the store when they heard what they thought was a customer.

The man went into the milk bar and found two men wearing face coverings armed with knives.

“One jumped the counter. On seeing the knives, the victim retreated back into his residence and locked the door,” Det Sen Const Jarvis said.

The burglars tried to kick in the door before returning to the counter, grabbing cash and cigarettes and leaving.

Open basement car park is risk to council building

By Casey Neill Critical infrastructure is at risk while the Dandenong Civic Centre car park remains open, according to Councillor Peter Brown.

He told the Monday 26 September Greater Dandenong Council meeting that he’d dropped off documents to the neighbouring government services building.

Cr Brown encountered a security door, concierge, restricted lift access, CCTV, a request for identification, and document inspection.

“Here, we’ve taken unnecessary risk by not closing the car park,” he said.

“Some of our critical infrastructure is down there.”

The Journal reported in August that an irate Cr Brown stormed out of the 8 August council meeting after losing his motion to close the free basement car park to the public.

He argued there were 38 spaces available but two were set aside for people with disabilities, seven were allocated to library staff, and four to councillors.

He said that the CEO and directors attended meetings that ran into the night and should have spaces.

He said civic centre tenants should be allocated a fair share of the parking and that only four spaces would be left after his proposed distribution.

Corporate services director Mick Jaensch confirmed claims from Cr Brown that parking had been a key sticking point in lease negotiations for vacant spaces on levels four and five.

At the 12 September council meeting, councillors agreed to tie three spots to an office space lease on level five.

“A month ago we decided to leave the basement car park open to the public during the week,” Cr Matthew Kirwan said at the time.

“The underground car park was designed as a public park for those visiting the library, customer service, council meeting rooms and council chamber.

“We are in the process of coming up with better arrangements during the day to maximise usage.

“That was why we voted to keep it open - now we shouldn’t be whittling the number of car parks away.”

Cr Kirwan said the civic centre should have public car parking because it was a public building.

The car park reopened on 1 July last year, after closing for a security review about six months earlier.

Security risks identified included “many instances” of unauthorised public access to the building via the car park and potential sexual assaults, thefts from cars and assaults.

There was also potential access to the council’s essential services generator with a “large capacity fuel supply”, major services such as power, communications and water, and underground storage and sensitive facilities and services, a report stated.

Security boosts are to include a digital visitoraccess system, restriction on library lift access, improved CCTV coverage, firm sanctions against disorderly behaviour and an in-house security service.

Museums Australia and the State Government are delivering the training program to five organisations across Victoria.

“We have a really proud wartime legacy in Dandenong, and it’s our duty to preserve these memories for younger generations,” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said.

“The War Heritage Collections Training Program will give the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL subbranch the skills it needs to safeguard the important treasures that mean so much to so many locals.”

Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL will receive intensive museological support from Museums Australia; a tailored report identifying conservation, significance and oral history priorities; up to $5000 to work with a conservation professional to stabilise, repair or rehouse at-risk memorabilia; and support to identify significant memorabilia and catalogue it on the Victorian Collections website.

The program is part of the $1 million Veterans Heritage and History Strategy and will run until 2018.

Machete threat to step-brother

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A convicted family violence offender accused of threatening a step-brother with a machete in Noble Park has been refused bail.

The 31-year-old Noble Park man indicated he would fight charges including breaching an intervention order, unlawful assault and heroin possession at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 26 September.

According to a police summary, the man armed himself with a machete and told the complainant not to call the police.

He was then allegedly found in possession of heroin, according to the charge sheet.

Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell told the court a police summary described the accused swinging the machete in the complainant’s direction at home on 20 September but “there’s no indication of any verbal threats directly”.

Ms Strugnell said it was unclear whether the weapon was a machete or a kitchen knife. “It’s not located on him later.”

She submitted that the man - who had an intellectual disability and severe epilepsy - could be bailed to live with his Springvale South godmother.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the godmother, while under cross-examination, had “no idea” why the applicant was in custody.

Mr Vandersteen said he was concerned the applicant had been previously found guilty of family

violence involving either a machete or a knife.

“He has assaulted nearly every family member since 2008.”

Mr Vandersteen described a 2008 incident in which the man punched his mother in the face, took hold of a knife and threatened her.

In 2012, the man threw a coffee cup against a TV screen and punched another relative to the face.

The man, while serving a community corrections order, has also previously threatened the step-brother with a knife in December.

For that offence, he was put on a good behaviour bond.

The applicant’s compliance with the re-confirmed community corrections order was described as “mixed”.

Mr Vandersteen said he refused bail because of the seriousness of the charges, and no proper supports to manage the man’s mental health, disability and drug use.

He said the “supports” on the applicant’s community corrections order were not working.

“Without that structure or support in place, you would be a risk of re-offending.

“It is a concern that each family violence incident includes an allegation of you being in possession of either a knife or a machete.”

A full intervention order protecting the stepbrother was extended to 26 September 2017.

The accused will next appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 October.

“We have a limited description because she only saw him run away, not his face,” Sen Const Jarvis said.

Expert help with diabetes Diabetes Victoria is reaching out to the Greater Dandenong community by hosting a Living Well with Diabetes event at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong on Saturday 15 October.

Living Well with Diabetes Dandenong will provide two separate seminars for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes to help them live active and healthy lives.

Selected experts will share their knowledge on how to manage diabetes by providing many practical tips. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with local diabetes services, peer support groups and product suppliers.

The type 2 session will focus on emotional health and healthy eating, blood glucose monitoring, gut health, physical activity and planning well balanced meals.

The type 1 session will focus on islet cell transplantation, gut health and motivation for people living with type 1 diabetes. The session will also include an introduction to carbohydrate counting in a variety of settings and a discussion around the emotional health aspects of living with type 1 diabetes.

Making community better Berwick Integrated Care (BIC) has been established by a team of well-respected surgeons, originally from Casey Surgical Group, who have worked in the region since 1980.

What is a nodular melanoma?

This is a type of melanoma that appears as a nodule or lump on the skin surface. Some 15 per cent of all melanomas are of the nodular variety.

It is very important to diagnose them early as they are the most rapidly growing of the melanoma types, and can become dangerously thick within a matter of weeks.

They are often non pigmented and present as pink or bleeding lumps on the skin which can make them more difficult to diagnose.

To try to avoid missing a nodular melanoma it is useful to apply the EFG rule. Any skin lesion that is elevated, firm and growing should be promptly removed and sent for biopsy to exclude a nodular melanoma.

Factory fined for liquid acid waste dumping A Dandenong South factory received a $7500 fine for dumping acid waste at the rear of its premises.

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) issued the fine after investigating a report from a community member about a factory in the process of being sold.

EPA southern metro manager Leigh Bryant said EPA officers inspected the Entraprop Investments Pty. Ltd. site.

“Witnesses observed a container containing green liquid being drained onto land at the rear of the premises,” he said.

“A running fire hose was also observed in the area, likely being used to try and dilute the acid.”

Mr Bryant said EPA officers took samples from the containers during the investigation.

“The results of EPA sampling indicated low pH levels and elevated levels of fluoride, consistent with what we would expect to find in this type of acid waste,” he said.

Mr Bryant said acid waste should always be disposed appropriately, and companies needed to ensure it was taken to a licensed facility.

“In this case, the company engaged two people to assist in cleaning up the premises and is now paying for their actions,” he said.

“This fine is also a warning to businesses that

they are responsible for the action of the people that they engage to work on their behalf.”

He said the acid waste, which had since been removed, was generated from the site’s previous tenant, a solar water heater system manufacturer.

“Site owners should know what activities are occurring on their premises as clean-up could be at their expense,” he said.

“Owners have a responsibility for their property.”

Growing nursery gives retrenched auto workers a lift A Keysborough company is creating jobs for up to 12 retrenched auto industry workers.

Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan and Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny visited Ball Australia’s 5.25 hectare Greens Road site on Wednesday 28 September.

They announced a $350,000 Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) grant to help the horticulture business to build a new national head office in Skye.

As part of the project, Ball Australia will take on 19 new workers over five years, including up to 12 retrenched automotive workers.

“Half of the automotive supply chain is located in Melbourne’s south east,” Mr Noonan said.

“This funding will help bring in new investment and create new jobs for former auto workers in the area.”

Established in 2001, Ball Australia is a wholesale plant nursery that produces seeds and small plants for distribution to commercial growers and plant retailers nationally.

It’s part of a global family of breeders and researchers and aims to provide the Australian horticultural industry with the most commercially viable and innovative plants from around the world.

Its Keysborough site has environmentally controlled glasshouses, an automated production facility and state-of-the art despatch systems.

Ball built a trial garden on part of its nursery grounds and each year hosts a week of viewing, this year from Tuesday 6 December to Friday 9 December.

Hundreds of plant varieties will be displayed in actual growing conditions in garden beds, containers and hanging baskets.

The LIFT program is part of the Towards Future Industries: Victoria’s Automotive Transition Plan.

The $33 million LIFT program provides grants to businesses to generate new investment and create jobs for retrenched workers in Melbourne’s south-east, North, West and Geelong - the communities most affected by the closure of the automotive manufacturing companies.

Ex-player and money manager helps raise funds

By Casey Neill More than 200 guests from south-east businesses talked footy in the name of charity.

The Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce hoped its 15th Grand Final Charity Lunch, which was held at Sandhurst Golf Club in Skye on Wednesday 28 September, would emulate last year’s $10,000 fund-raising result.

The proceeds from the sold-out event will support Make-A-Wish Australia and Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.

Lawrie Leeman from Make-A-Wish said the lunch had raised $74,000 for the foundation over the past seven years.

The money grants wishes to children aged three to 18 who have a life-threatening medical condition.

A video of cystic fibrosis sufferer Kai, 9, receiving his wish of being part of the Carlton Football Club for the day brought tears to eyes around the room.

Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation chairwoman Virginia Simmons said the charity helped people experiencing hardship to access education, often with just $1000.

She said recipients often said it was the first time anybody had showed faith in them, and that it gave them a reason to live.

West Coast and Carlton champion midfielder Chris Judd was the day’s guest speaker and provided an insight to his transition from a 14-year AFL career to the “real world” where he took on a funds management job.

His clothes didn’t fit, he was flooded with emails, and he struggled with office lingo.

“The other thing that surprised me was how bloody long a work day was,” he said.

He left the corporate world and for the past six months has been working in the media and on his private businesses.

The media role allowed him back inside the footy world he’d aspired to join since he was a kid.

“I was really surprised at how much I did miss

Water skiing is on the way

By Casey Neill Bangholme’s cable water-ski centre could be open by Christmas.

An update on the Facebook page for the $5 million project said opening dates had not yet been set, but mid-December was the best case scenario.

“Worst case is late April - most likely somewhere in between,” the post said.

The Journal revealed plans for the park on Riverend Road, adjacent to the National Watersports Centre (NWSC) on Patterson River, in February last year.

The company developing the park, Activ, leased a grassed area the State Government declared surplus to its needs.

Activ managing director Ian Clark said the site would become home to lakes for water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

They’ll feature skate park-like obstacles and tracks to tow users in the same way a boat would.

Greater Dandenong Council approved the project in August last year, and endorsed plans for a building permit in May. Construction started in July and the site is now cleared, ready for heavy earth moving equipment to arrive and lake construction to start in the first week of October.

“The site is now completely fenced and nearly all of the trees have been removed,” a Melbourne Cable Park Facebook page post said on Tuesday 27 September.

“The lake construction will happen pretty quickly using a combination of scrapers and excavators.

“The cable systems ship from Germany this week, and if things stay on track we should have the cables up this side of Christmas. The obstacles are due to arrive early December.”

The underlying water table challenged the Melbourne Cable Park’s progress.

“The site was built from imported material in the 1980s for Melbourne’s bid for the 1996 Olympic Games, and there is very little documentation around the underlying condition of the clay beneath the surface,” the post said.

“The geotechnical testing showed positive results and the geotechnical guys are optimistic, but until they start the dig they will not know for sure.”

Next will be an upgrade to the power in the street feeding the site, followed by new connections to the site for power, water and sewerage.

“All of these will be happening while the earthworks are happening,” the post said.

“While we have questioned our sanity many times during this project, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting much closer, and we are doing everything possible to get everyone on the water as soon as possible.

“Good things come to those who wait and the wait will be worth it.”

The Journal reported in February last year that the park could attract 90,000 people to Bangholme each year.

Mr Clark said solar panels would power the cable systems, which each used as much electricity as two washing machines.

He said it was an environmentally sustainable way to water-ski and would open the sport to people who had previously been excluded by the need for a boat.

Mr Clark said the park would average about 250 visitors per day, and the council had restricted numbers on the site to 370 at any one time. He said the centre would be open seven days a week and would also feature a high ropes adventure challenge, cafe and inflatable aqua fun park.

A council officer’s report said the site design respected the surrounding environment and amenity.

“The proposed facility is envisaged to host local, national and international water sports events, providing a significant direct and indirect contribution to the local economy,” it said.

By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association is set for another massive season, as all clubs start afresh and begin their quest to take out one of the hardest premierships to win in Victoria, Turf 1.

All clubs are raring to go, and have each got their own claim to this year’s title.

If we thought last year’s signings were impressive, this year’s talent is going to make for some interesting reading.

Former domestic cricketers will feature once again, as will former Premier cricketers. But what is so intriguing and exciting about this year’s DDCA competition is the array of international signings.

Steven Mullaney, Luke Fletcher, Iraq Thomas and Jurgan Anderson are just some of the impressive names we will see strutting their stuff this season.

Here is a team by team preview of this year’s competition, which will begin on 8 October: BERWICK Coach: The Cricket Operations Group will manage the coaching department.

MOTORING Female apprentices drive change Berwick Mazda is proud of the faces behind its hard-working team.

One of these is second year apprentice, Marita Dennis, who has single-handedly felt the benefits of the Mazda Apprentice Program.

Marita has been a part of the Berwick Mazda team for two years, and has been training with Mazda’s Technical Training initiative which provides a range of training to support the skills of dealership technicians.

“This program helps to create all-round Service and Diagnostic technicians with a career path towards becoming a Master Technician,” Dealer Principal Grant Handley said.
