By Luke Voogt Geelong’s crime rate has lept by 20 per cent in a year, according to data released on Thursday.

Offences jumped from 8460 to 10,190 per 100,000 residents in the last financial year, the state Crime Statistics Agency figures showed.

Geelong crime rose by almost double the state increase of 11.2 per cent, the data revealed.

Geelong burglaries and thefts were up by 37 per cent but assault and sex offences were down by one and 10 per cent respectively.

Surf Coast crime was up by 9 per cent.

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos blamed the State Government and called for more police. The Geelong increase was the biggest in five years, he said.

“It’s the crimes against property and person which are quite alarming. People are living in fear at times in their own homes.”

Ms Katos slammed Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville.

“Lisa Neville is not even investing resources in her own home town let alone the rest of the state.”

A 24 per cent increase in justice-procedure offences, such as breaching court orders and bail conditions, showed the government was “soft” on offenders, particularly juveniles, Mr Katos said.

“A lot of these offenders don’t have respect for the law.

“I think that’s the one that really disgusts the community, when people are granted bail and they commit another offence,” he said.

Users slam plans to boot buses out of main street

By Luke Voogt Planning authorities have wrongly blamed bus passengers for declining trade on Moorabool Street, according to a Geelong public transport advocate.

Passengers were fed up with being treated like second-class citizens, said Geelong Public Transport Users Association convenor Paul Wescott.

“Far from being detrimental to central Geelong, bus passengers are beneficial because they shop in the city but don’t create traffic jams or add to parking problems,” he said.

Mr Westcott made the statement following Geelong Authority and council discussions about moving the location of Moorabool Street’s bus stops.

Between 2005 and 2010 council moved stops out of Moorabool Street in an attempt to boost trade, he said.

Mr Westcott described the five-year experi-

ment as a failure.

“It proved conclusively that the presence of bus stops in Moorabool Street was not responsible for the decline in the retail trade in the area,” he said.

“While bus travellers were banished from Moorabool Street and forced to search for their bus stops at nine scattered and disconnected city locations, shops continued to close.”

Public Transport Victoria figures showed 1.2 million boardings at the Moorabool Street bus stops in 2015, Mr Westcott said.

“While passengers think that although the setup of the current bus stops might be improved, they are far better than any alternative.”

The Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) and the council floated moving the Moorabool Street stops as part of a plan to revitalise Geelong.

The Revitalise Central Geelong Action Plan, which aims to create functional and vibrant city centre, would review bus routes, a DELWP

spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said any proposal to move the bus stops would involve “comprehensive community engagement”.

Chief Administrator Kathy Alexander discussed the idea of moving the bus interchange from the street, which has 15 vacant shopfronts in 800 metres.

“We see the potential to move it as a huge opportunity for Moorabool Street to be transformed into a thriving main street environment, full of alfresco activity and an interesting mix of shops,” she said.

But Dr Alexander stressed the idea was in “its early days” and that the council was exploring alternative solutions.

“We would only move the interchange if our consultation with all stakeholders revealed a much better location,” she said.

In Brief Saleyards ‘withdrawal’ Geelong’s historic saleyards are set to close permanently as City Hall pursues a “staged withdrawal of operations”.

Council administrators decided this week to follow their sacked councillor predecessors’ resolution on the saleyards, which partly closed earlier this year amid safety issues.

Teen robbed Thieves punched and kicked a teenage boy before robbing him at Torquay, police have alleged.

The 17-year-old suffered minor injuries but lost his wallet, phone and backpack during the attack as he walked home along Inshore Drive on Saturday night, investigators said.

Project power Geelong’s council administrators have given their chief executive officer power to accept or reject tenders for Corio’s $5.4 million Hendy Street Child and Family Centre.

A “reduced council meeting cycle later this year” was behind the handover, which would keep the centre on track to open in early 2018, City Hall said.

Ill communication Bellarine MP Lisa Neville has apologised for claiming that Metropolitan Fire Brigade chief Peter Rau resigned because he was “gravely ill”.

Ms Neville, Victoria’s Police Minister, backed away from her claim after Mr Rau’s wife blamed bullying for his resignation.

Readers might have missed the alarm sirens but yet another ‘tsunami’ has washed over Geelong.

Luckily, gigantic waves were absent in the latest rhetorical misuse of a word with somewhat darker meaning in many other parts of the world.

Yesterday’s onslaught was a “tsunami of crime”, according to state coalition MP Simon Ramsay as he turned up his hyperbole to 11 against the Andrews government.

It was just the latest in a series of reported ‘tsunamis’ to strike the region in recent years.

Other local incidents have reportedly involved tsunamis of manufacturing job losses, chronic disease, high-scoring AFL opponents and even dumped cats at the local pound.

Truly, it’s a tsunami of tsunamis for Geelong, according to hackneyed local reporting.

CORRELATION: A new survey shows Geelong residents are losing weight while smoking less.

While crime, cats and unemployment et al are on the rise, at least Geelong’s tsunami of obesity is receding.

In fact, the city’s obesity rate has fallen almost 7 per cent on 2011 levels, a Victorian Population Health Survey has reported.

Geelong residents now rate 49.1 per cent obese compared to the state average of 50, the survey revealed.

Great news, especially for strained local health services. Not to mention local pants.

Interestingly, the figures also cast doubt on a well-worn excuse for smokers that their habit keeps them slimmer - the survey in fact recorded an 8.6 per cent decrease in local smoking rates.

So, we’re growing thinner and smoking less.

Sounds like a handy new argument to encourage family and friends off the lung-busters.

North Geelong residents might like to keep an eye on a car park at 1-5 Ballarat Road, which appears - at this stage - destined for a new use that most would support.

City Hall announced this week that developers of the now-defunct Geelong Golf Club had “indicated their intention” to redevelop the site for a “multi-storey aged care facility”.

Unsurprisingly, the feel-good proposal attracted no objections.

And it must also have delighted Geelong’s council administrators, who requested a residential rezoning to allow the aged care facility.

As an added caveat, the project would only go ahead “subject to a future planning permit application”, of course.

Trouble is, proposed “multi-storey” aged care facilities have been known to revert to plain old multi-storey apartment developments after troublesome rezoning processes have been cleverly negotiated.

Just sayin’…

By Luke Voogt Tour guide Deb Robinson will join a live, worldwide hunt for “paranormal evidence” at Geelong Gaol this Sunday.

Ms Robinson is part of the only Victorian team in the international ghost hunt, streaming live on Facebook from Scarefest in Lexington, Kentucky.

“We’re always after evidence of spirits and we definitely have some that interact with tour guides at the gaol,” she said.

Ms Robinson, two “ghost investigators” and a local medium will join 70 teams from North and South America, Europe and New Zealand that will be live-streaming during the event.

Geelong Gaol was long-rumoured to be one of Australia’s most haunted gaols, Ms Robinson said.

As Victoria’s prison hospital since 1849, the gaol had the highest death rate of convicts in the state.

Ms Robinson said her team would record inaudible sound in the search for electronic voice phenomena (EVP) - sounds interpreted as “spirit voices”.

The event organisers would “debunk” explainable sound to derive paranormal noises, she said.

Mr Robinson welcomed sceptics of ghosts to attend the event.

“We love sceptics coming along - we love to prove them wrong.”

Ms Robinson said proceeds from ticket sales at twistedhistory.net.au would go to Geelong Animal Welfare Society.

A green bent emerged among Geelong’s council administrators during a series of decisions this week.

Slashing “carbon” emissions and protecting Bellarine Peninsula yellow gums were among initiatives at their monthly meeting on Tuesday night.

They also knocked back a proposed Portarlington development partly on town character grounds despite its “local job opportunities”.

The administrators - Dr Kathy Alexander, Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling - endorsed a strategy to cut the council’s carbon dioxide emissions by 50 per cent while increasing investments in renewable energy.

City Hall described the council’s draft greenhouse strategy as the “next step” in making it “carbon-free”.

“As one of the leading employers in the region, and with one of the largest environmental footprints, it’s important that the City leads the way in reducing greenhouse emissions and ensuring our environment remains clean and is sustainable for

future generations,” said city services acting general manager Vicki Shelton.

The City was seeking public comment on the greenhouse strategy, she said.

The administrators also adopted an Ocean Grove Significant Tree Project, which focussed on the endangered Bellarine yellow gum.

City planning and development acting general manager Joanne Van Slageren said the project sought to “balance the unique character and feel of Ocean Grove with the tendency to subdivide and remove trees to fit large houses on small lots”.

Ms Van Slageren said planning scheme changes to allow for the project would “not preclude all future development” but ensure it “reflected the special character of Ocean Grove and its remnant vegetation”.

The administrators also refused a rezoning application for a “small” commercial precinct with four-storey accommodation and shops at Portarlington but acknowledged the proposal’s benefits, including urban renewal, quality tourist accommodation and local job opportunities.

Without his “major impact” Geelong’s rate would be closer to 15 per cent, Ms Neville said.

Geelong police had also been making more arrests due to stronger enforcement and targeted operations, she said. “We have a six-year trend of

increasing crime rates, which is why we’ve funded additional police.”

“The overwhelming majority of thefts of and from motor vehicles were the result of keys being left in cars or cars being left unlocked,” she said.

Mavis thrilled to re-live history

By Luke Voogt Grovedale’s Mavis Govan hopes to again see her beloved Western Bulldogs win a Grand Final, 62 years after watching the club’s only premiership live.

Mavis saw Footscray thrash Melbourne at the MCG in 1954, back when “anyone could get a ticket” and the stadium still had standing room.

“It was absolutely packed,” she said.

“It wasn’t really close, but it was good for us.”

Mavis still remembers the lead-up to the big day.

Her husband decorated the couple’s ute in blue, red and white ribbons, although he didn’t go as far as some modern-day fans by repainting it.

“You didn’t do that sort of thing back then,” Mavis said.

The 89-year-old can’t wait to see her ‘Doggies’ play a Grand Final again when they take on the Sydney Swans on Saturday.

She and her cousin watched the club’s thrilling one-goal preliminary final win over GWS from her lounge room last weekend.

“We made that much noise you could hear us from everywhere,” she said.

“I think we had two glasses of wine - when you’re my age you don’t drink much.”

But without fans like Mavis the Bulldogs may not have even been around to make the Grand Final.

When Footscray was facing bankruptcy and considering merging with Fitzroy in 1989, she volunteered at the ‘Bulldogs Shop’ to help keep the club alive.

“We did what we could,” she said.

“It was a lot more than just me that worked hard to save the club, though.”

Mavis has been a fan for life and a club member for 66 years.

Her husband would be down at the ‘pie shed’ at Western Oval (now Whitten Oval) every Tuesday and Thursday to watch the club’s training sessions in the ’50s.

Mavis lived in and around Footscray most of her life, moving to Geelong in 1999 after the death of her husband.

She was at the MCG when Footscray lost to Hawthorn in the 1961 Grand Final and again during its cruel preliminary final loss to Adelaide in 1997.

With the Bulldogs leading by 22 halfway through the last quarter some fans had already left to buy Grand Final tickets, she said.

Mavis watched from behind the posts as Tony Liberatore kicked what appeared to be a matchending goal.

“It was definitely a goal,” she said.

But the umpire ruled it a point and the dogs squandered the lead, losing to the eventual premiers by just two points.

Supporting the Dogs has become tradition for the Govan family.

“From the time my grandsons could sit up in the pram my husband had a Bulldogs jumper on them and a football in their hands,” Mavis said.

She has already “signed up” her five and threeyear-old great grandchildren.

By Luke Voogt TV personality Catriona Rowntree has refused to respond to a developer's claim she led a “fake campaign” against a proposed quarry in the You Yangs.

Bisinella spokesperson David Withington criticised Ms Rowntree as the company decided against appealing a council rejection of the quarry plan.

Ms Rowntree ignored the comments, instead praising the work of Lara residents who opposed the project.

“I’m proud of both myself and our beautiful community that we stood up to this developer,” she told the Indy from Thailand on Tuesday.

“It is an awful situation that you're unwillingly thrown into.”

The Getaway host, who lives near the proposed quarry site, welcomed Bisinella’s choice not to appeal council’s decision at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“The community will be a safer place for this decision,” she said.

“We'll be forever grateful to the (council) administrators for being reasonable and protecting this area.”

Earlier this week Mr Withington attacked Ms Rowntree’s opposition to the project as a case of NIMBY - not in my backyard - syndrome.

Ms Rowntree made a submission to council against the quarry and opposed it on social media.

“Catriona Rowntree has told TV shows and magazines that she enjoys a peaceful lifestyle with her family at Wooloomanata yet she contradicts herself by saying in a submission to council that her life is already ‘hell’ because of the noise and

dangers of quarry trucks going to and from existing quarries," Mr Withington said.

However Lara Care Group, one of several community organisations opposing the quarry, leapt to Ms Rowntree’s defence.

“To drag her name through the dirt like this is just outrageous,” said group president Barry White.

“She presented some very good arguments and she does a hell of a lot for the Geelong community.”

Ms Rowntree was reluctant to give Mr Withington's attack “too much air”, Mr White said.

“She recognises she was just one player among many.”

Mr Withington also slammed the administrators’ “hasty and ill-considered” refusal, saying Bisinella would not invest further funds in legal proceedings.

The administrators' rejection of the quarry squandered 65 jobs and jeopardised growth, he said.

Bisinella had gone “to great lengths” responding to concerned local farmers and activists, Mr Withington said.

He refuted locals' submissions stating the quarry would harm the environment and tourism, saying few You Yangs visitors came near its “extractive industries zone”.

Mr Withington said the administrators' panel to hear objectors’ submissions produced “a mistake-riddled and fundamentally flawed report”.

But Mr White described the claim as a “total distortion”, saying more than 3000 people petitioned against the quarry and the council received more than 260 objections.

“These covered everything from damage to the landscape, the impact on wildlife, road safety, family visits and cycling.”

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives are hunting for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Geelong on 13 September.

The 41-year-old woman told police she was at a bus stop on Moorabool Street about 9am when an unknown man approached her.

The pair struck up a conversation and the woman got into his car parked opposite the bus exchange.

The man, believed to be aged in his late sixties or seventies, drove to an unknown location where he reportedly sexually assaulted her.

He then drove the woman back to Geelong and dropped her off near James Street about 1pm.

The man is Caucasian in appearance with grey hair and a solid build.

He was wearing a dark coloured jumper and pants, and was carrying a blue and white umbrella, police said.

Investigators have released an image of the man who may be able to assist with their inquiries, along with an image of a dark Holden wagon.

WANTED: The man police want to question.

Pipe turned off Authorities will turn off Geelong’s $80 million water pipeline from Melbourne less than six months after turning it on for the first time.

The Melbourne supply was now unnecessary after Geelong begin tapping Moorabool system reservoirs again on Monday, Barwon Water said.

The switch follows recent heavy rains that have lifted the Barwon and Moorabool systems to 75 and 81 per cent capacity respectively.

Barwon Water said the pipeline would remain “an insurance policy against future drought”.

The Brumby Labor State Government announced in 2008 it would build the pipeline so Geelong could take water from Melbourne after Wonthaggi’s $4 billion desalination plant was operational.

The opposition warned at the time that the pipeline would increase Geelong water bills to cover the higher cost of desalination even when it was not needed.

The pipeline was finished in 2012 and first turned on in April this year, with Water Minister Lisa Neville citing dry conditions.

“By turning on the pipeline, this means water

restrictions are now a last resort and Geelong can still maintain its liveability even as drying conditions continue,” she said in March.

Barwon Water said the switch to the Moorabool system for Geelong’s northern suburbs was “normal practice at this time of year”.

“During the warmer months, we balance the surface water storages across our network,” said Barwon Water’s Paul Northey.

“This means some areas rely more on water from catchments in the Moorabool system, north of Geelong, rather than catchments in the Otways, to the west and, this year, the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline.

“Barwon Water has access to multiple water sources, providing greater security of supply.

“Switching between water sources may occur at any time to optimise use and maintain supplies.”

Mr Northey warned that customers might notice “a change in the taste of their water” but it was “100 per cent safe” and compliant with official guidelines.

Saab, unfortunately, became bankrupt due to its unrelenting quest for quality and excellence but Volvo has continued to excel and manufactures the safest cars available today.

Volvo invented the driver, passenger, side and curtain airbag systems, front and rear crumple zones, and side intrusion bars.

These innovations alone have saved millions of lives after adoption by the world’s auto manufacturers.

Volvo’s latest models feature enhanced safety technologies such as ABS brakes, WHOPS antiwhiplash technology, back and headrest systems, blind-spot detection, BLIS city-safety auto braking, collision warning systems, driver-alert control, dynamic stability and traction control, lane departure warnings, park assist, remote-control opening, starting and locking, and rollover protection.

In a recent episode of Top Gear USA, a ’90s model Volvo wagon was raised 10 metres from the ground and dropped on its tailgate. The passenger compartment was undamaged and the engine started flawlessly.

If Volvo is experimenting with driverless technology we can rest assured the results will be beneficial to future driving safety and comfort. Driver error will be eliminated, so I would expect accident reductions as a result.

New technologies aren’t infallible but they’re certainly the future - think autopilot on aeroplanes.

Wet, dry - it’s climate change I congratulate Mik Aidt (Letters, 16 September) for moving past the debate on global warming and urging us to get on with it.

The whole world is now moving on, with both China and the US ratifying the Paris climate agreement and a new Galaxy poll showing that 65 per cent of Australians want Australia to lead in finding solutions.

I was then bemused by Alan Baron’s reply the following week which was based on semantics and his choice of timescales to argue there is no climate emergency.

He instead cited floods in India and starvation in Africa as genuine emergencies.

Anyone who knows anything about global warming knows it predicts more-frequent floods and famine-causing droughts, both of which will be more intense.

This is what we already see.

Unless there is a change multiple generations to come will have to pay for the sins of those driven by the obsessive greed of the almighty dollar.

Few people know that oncology massage is a therapy being offered to cancer patients and their families in and around the Geelong region and that there are many benefits that oncology massage provides during and after diagnosis and treatment.

The Geelong community now has a group of health professionals specifically trained in oncology massage therapy who are ready to assist and support those diagnosed with cancer.

Squaring up for political intrigue Upcoming musical Chess is “more than black and white” for Geelong actor Jules Hart.

“Although the story is around chess, the game is used more as a metaphor for political intrigue,” he said.

“All the characters try to play each other.”

Featuring music by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, and lyrics by musical theatre legend Tim Rice, Chess is the allegorical tale of a Cold War-era chess tournament.

Hart, 32, plays the American grandmaster Fredrick Trumper, who is battling not only to win the World Championship but the heart of fellow player Florence.

“He’s a very arrogant showman - he’s sort of an amplified version of me,” he said.

“I’ve been in theatre for a while, so I like being a bit of a showman, although I probably don’t have Trumper’s a**hole side.”

Geelong Society of Dramatic Arts (GSODA) will transform Geelong’s Playhouse Theatre into a giant chess board for the play.

Performers will become the story’s pawns, in a tale of love and East-West intrigue, featuring players, politicians, the CIA and KGB. “Old-hat” actor Hart said Chess was one the most challenging plays of his 19-year career, thanks to some “unique technical aspects”.

However, he would not expand on these.

“People will just have to come along to find out,” he said.

Political intrigue, romance and a crowd-pleasing soundtrack combine to produce a match-winning night of theatre, said GSODA’s Carolanne Glynne.

“Be sure to make your move before it’s too late.”

Matthew Bradford, Sally-Anne Cowdell and David Mackay will join Hart on the cast.

Anglesea Beachfront’s 20th birthday will be one of the biggest parties this year, according to the caravan park’s manager Justin Morris.

“Enjoy some excellent local talent, food and drink without the worry of having to drive home,” Justin said.

“Cabins and sites are filling fast, so we urge people to book early so they can experience what is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend.”

After two decades in Anglesea, Justin said that the Morris family wanted to celebrate and say thank you with some of the “Surf Coast’s most popular performers”.

The free family fun day on 15 October will feature entertainment for all ages, he said.

Torquay-based children’s group Willow Star and Geelong magician Dazzling Dan the Magic Man will entertain the youngsters throughout the afternoon.

In the evening, Anglesea acoustic guitarist Tristan J Ross will perform songs from the 50s to

now, followed by the classic rock of the Scream’n Eagles.

The day will include face painting, a mobile animal petting farm, sumo-suit wrestling, a mechanical bull, a giant inflatable twister, laser strike and “the amazing race game”.

Guests can enjoy a sausage or two, and local craft beer and wine on tap including the Rogue Wave Brewing Company’s new ales “Salt” and “Moby”.

“The support from the local Anglesea business community has been outstanding,” Justin said.

“We put the call out, and within the day we had most of the entertainment and catering sorted, which just shows how involved and helpful our local community is.”

“Accommodation bookings have been tremendous with many of our annuals and regulars coming to stay for the weekend.”

Founder of the festival Noah, 8, picked the Sun Bear as his totem animal.

“I want all kids to learn about protecting endangered animals,” he said.

While the sun bear is not an Australian animal it represents the relationships with all the creatures that live on Earth, Ms Nedoluha said.

Sun Bear Children’s Festival is the playground where nature and culture meet, according to director Katja Nedoluha.

“Put together a bunch of kids, their love of wildlife and the support of their parents, and voila - that’s the Sun Bear Children’s Festival,” she said The festival, now in its third year, begins two days before World Animal Day to highlight the plight of endangered species.

It makes a unique connection to how indigenous people have created balance between nature and humanity, Ms Nedoluha said.

“It’s a great introduction to sustainability and culture in a playful way.”

At their workshops, Norm Stanley and Aunty Bronwyn will introduce the kids to their totem animals and together they will perform a ceremony.

WHEN I left school I began working in factories amid loud machinery and, for fun, I played piano in bands three nights weekly without considering the damage to my ears.

Eventually I started havingtrouble understanding conversations and noticing high notes on the piano were disappearing.

I started lip-reading, trying to piece stories together from the words I could recognise.

I eventually had a series oftests and stopped playing

in bands to avoid any further damage. Now I have to wear hearing protection any time I’m around loud noises.

Then I was advised to wearhearing devices, which I’ve worn for seven years with great success.

New digital hearing aids canbe programmed by welltrained professionals to suit individual needs.

Many digital aids on the market, nearly all with bluetooth connectivity to mobile phones or TVs. I recently contacted Hearing Aid Specialists, at 77 Yarra St, Geelong, which was offering trials of new products.

The clinic’s Marcel Timmers and I had a long chat about my hearing history and he tested me to determine the best outcome for my hearing loss.

A pair of Oticon Alta Pro hearing devices was programmed for me to try.

I immediately noticed howclear everything sounded. The Alta Pro’s noise compression allowed me to focus on speech around me while quietening traffic noise.

It is very noticeable how

well the noise compression works. I was out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and was able to understand multiple conversations, which I think was due to the directional microphones following where I was looking and the computer doing all the background noise-cancelling to make my dinner out a very enjoyable experience.

My previous hearing aids could cancel out background noise but were less clear and accurate.

I’ve also noticed a big change when listening to radio in my car. The Alta Pro devices seem to pick out the announcer’s voice from the mix of car engine and road noise.

Marcel has tailored a specific music program for my Alta Pros, allowing me to hear high notes on the piano again.

I can now enjoy conversations with family and friends, watch movies, TV, listen to music and enjoy life again.

The 34th Victorian Seniors Festival takes place throughout October.

Free and low-cost events and activities will be presented across the Geelong region and the rest of Victoria, including concerts, dances, theatre shows, celebratory morning teas, tours, a host of indoor and outdoor recreation activities and much more.

The State Government will provide eight days of free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders in metropolitan and regional Victoria from Sunday until 9 October.

Five days of free V/Line travel will be available for Seniors Card holders on 3 to 6 October and 8 October.

Geelong will host its own seniors festival as part of the state-wide activities.

The Geelong Seniors Festival is the largest community celebration for seniors in regional Victoria.

As well as being a great opportunity to get out and about for little or no cost, the festival will also provide a rare insight into what is on in Geelong for the rest of the year, with most of the events staged by local clubs and interest groups.

Seniors’ companion cards are welcome at all Geelong Seniors Festival events.

As part of the celebration, Geelong Seniors Card holders will also enjoy a free shuttle bus in the central city area from 3 to 6 October and again the following weekend.

For Belmont Grange’s Leon Derby, aged care should go “beyond the normal walks and bingo”.

“I think the thing that sets us apart is the lifestyle program that we offer here,” he said.

Leon is the administrative officer at the home, one of three that are run by Homestyle Aged Care in Geelong.

Earlier this year, the residents co-authored a book with award-winning author Lee Fox and youngsters from Breakwater Kindergarten.

The home is also starting pilot program next month called Music for the Mind which involves designing specific music playlists for each resident.

“The playlists include songs that they’re familiar with from a major life event – like wedding, anniversary and birthday.

“It’s designed to invoke memories of the past.”

The staff will examine the resident’s cultural assessment to make the playlist, as well as consulting with them and their family.

He said ABC’s Catalyst explored the benefits of familiar music for the elderly.

“It’s amazing to see the transformation someone can have just listening to the music they’re familiar with from 50 to 60 years ago,” he said.

For Leon the best part of the job is making residents happy.

“They come here a bit concerned about what their future might hold.

“Then they make some new friends and get involved the activities here – a lot of people make a 180-degree turn around,” he said.

Support honours the spirit An award-winning program aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people with dementia at one of Geelong’s most respected not-for-profit aged care providers.

With more people developing dementia as they age, creating tailored care and support is critical.

Uniting AgeWell Kalkee Community Nangatta in Belmont is introducing an innovative program that provides care aimed specifically at supporting people with dementia in residential aged care.

The UA Namaste program - meaning to honour the spirit within - uses the five main senses to connect with people who may no longer be able to communicate and so reduce their stress and anxiety.

Specially designed Namaste rooms promote an environment that instils feelings of wellbeing, allowing the person to focus on sensory components through massage, aromatherapy, natural light, visuals of calming elements and familiar music from the resident’s era.

Palliative care specialist and UA Namaste program leader Kerry Whitlock said residents on the program are more responsive, less anxious and maintaining weight.

“The Namaste care model works to decrease a client’s stress and anxiety and, consequently, their family’s,” she said.

Kalkee Nangatta Care Manager Glenda Harvey said television screens had been turned into fish tanks and artificial fires had been installed in sitting rooms where residents can sit calmly, reducing anxiety.

Walls have been decorated with memorabilia to promote reminiscence, a sensory room has been established and activities are based on a person’s preferences.

Funeral plan’s tax relief From 1 January 2017, new rules will apply for the Centrelink Age Pension Assets test that will affect thousands of current pension holders.

For people eligible for a part pension, the pension rate currently reduces by $1.50 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets owned over the full pension limit.

From 1 January 2017, the pension will be reduced by $3 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets over the limit.

One strategy to reduce assets is to invest in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan which can both be organised by Kings Funerals.

Under this scheme all funds are invested with a friendly society.

Currently retirees can invest up to $12,250 in a funeral bond and this investment it is not deemed to be part of their assets.

With a fixed price funeral plan there is no limit on the amount they can invest.

This ability to reduce assets by investing in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan is a benefit that is not available with funeral insurance products.

People ask this question all the time.

Lots of people don’t need to think about their ears because they never block up but others have regular problems with blockage.

Ears are supposed to be self-cleaning. The earwax is gently pushed out by the skin moving like a conveyor belt.

Ears should only be cleaned with a face cloth or tissue if wax can be seen on the outside of the ear.

Cotton buds should never be used because the wax can be pushed further in, the ear may be scratched or become itchy.

Some people just have ears that block up regularly.

They may have narrow canals or a family history of earwax trouble.

SPORT Taylor gets set for Hawaii

ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Clifton Springs hosted plenty of attention from anglers seeking snapper over the past week, although the fish were particularly selective on their bite times.

Simon D’Antino managed to boat three snappers of 6.5kg at anchor on the mud near Wilson Spit.

Gummy sharks to 6kg were a common but welcome by-catch, while anglers fishing the spoil grounds caught pinkies and pike on soft plastics.

Whiting captures increased at St Leonards where fish to 40cm were taken around tide changes. Tenderised squid seemed to entice the most bites.

The mouth of Swan Bay produced squid to 1kg on size 3 jigs drifted over the grass patches on the incoming tide.

The Barwon River estuary was a hot spot for the kids with small King George whiting, Australian salmon and mullet devouring cut up pieces of prawns and pippies. Bream anglers fared well with fresh baits such as shrimp and Bass yabbies.

The Surf Coast estuaries continued to produce bream. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt spent an afternoon walking the banks to catch numerous bream to 36cm again on Z-Man grubs.

Portland was a standout destination for barrel southern Bluefin tuna to over 100kg, which were taken almost daily. Anglers hooked into tuna in as little as 60m while trolling skirted lures.

On Sunday I fished Lake Elingamite, near Cobden, where the recent rain allowed the use of boats to 4.5m. While trolling a clown-pattern Tassie Devil rigged with twin-assist hooks on sunset I boated a rainbow trout of 57cm.

Other anglers fishing the lake boated some impressive redfin either by trolling or casting lures.

Lake Purrumbete continued firing, with anglers fishing at first and last light along the east shore, boating numerous brown trout to over 5kg. Casting soft plastics to bait schools, fishing minnow under a float and trolling Tassie Devils worked well.

Squads shows Geelong scores many a soccer goal

By Josip Zilic The Geelong region is enjoying a terrific growth period in football/soccer participation at all levels and the fruits of that labour has been evident in representative squads over the years.

This year is no different with squads being announced during the week ahead of the National Championships coming up in Coffs Harbour this weekend.

The Victorian Country squad has no less than 13 Geelong-born players representing the state, of which 12 are competing with the region’s NPL club North Geelong Warriors.

The result is a great example of how the pathway program is working for players, coaches and clubs alike, bringing together the region's players from a wide range of community clubs, who perform their best under the guidance of the NPL system to draw the attention of selectors.

The players are used to going through selection trials as they go through it to join the North Geelong in the NPL system which puts them in

Torquay’s Nathan Taylor has battled through heartache to qualify for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii next Saturday.

The surf instructor and father-of-two was euphoric to qualify during his first-ever Ironmanlength triathlon in Port Macquarie, placing fifth in the 40-44 age group.

“To go to Hawaii wasn’t even on the radar,” the 43-year-old said.

“Many athletes try their very best to get to Kona, but miss out in qualifying. I was one of the lucky ones.”

Taylor was thrilled just to finish the race after recovering from a leg fracture which saw him miss the Melbourne Ironman Triathlon in March 2015.

“I want to continue to enjoy this incredible journey and enjoy it as much as I have over the past few years,” he said.

“This opportunity is not one that everyone gets.”

Taylor sustained his injury through over-training. When he first felt pain in his hip he tried to run through it.

“I trained for almost 12 months for that event, and I was under the mindset that you can never do enough,” he said.

Soon, he couldn’t walk and he later discovered he had a stress fracture in top of his femur (thigh bone).

“That was pretty much game over,” he said.

Taylor would spend six month on crutches, before learning to run again.

And if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, he missed the event again this year, after organisers cancelled it to make way for the Melbourne Grand Prix.

But pain turned to joy when he transferred his ticket to the Port Macquarie event.

“I was pretty proud to see my family at the finish line,” he said. “I rode that high for a few weeks afterwards.”

Taylor finished the gruelling event, only his third triathlon, in nine hours and 43 minutes.

He had built up to it by competing in an Olympic-length triathlon in November 2015 and the Geelong Half Ironman Triathlon this February.

An Ironman Triathlon involves a 3.8km swim, a 180km ride and a 42km run - the last leg alone is the length of a marathon.

Taylor also has to contend with lava fields and tropical heat in next Saturday’s event.

Over the year he has increased his training to 12km swimming, 60km running and 300km riding a week.

“I’m the fittest and lightest I’ve been in my life,” he said.

“I think I’m a really good role model for my kids. I feel proud showing them how to live a healthy life.”

Taylor’s coach Adam Beckworth said he was “exceptionally proud to have been part Nathan’s journey, and watch him grow as an athlete and person”.
