Unholy rates row By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Turning Point Church in Cranbourne South is leading the charge against a rate hike for places of worship in the City of Casey. Churches and other places of worship were, until recently, considered community organisations and had a rates bill compared to businesses or residential premises. Pastor Phil Cayzer of Turning Point church said that changed in June when Casey Council passed a change to their rates policy that has seen rates for places of worship increase threefold. “For many years, churches have been identified by council as part of the community,” he said. “Council has changed the policy to say the church is not part of community anymore.” Pastor Cayzer said he was very disappointed in the view council had taken with this change, and the lack of consultation with the churches in the area. “Churches or other places of worship not being viewed as community places by council really disappoints us,” he said. “At least six or eight churches have called me because they are all affected and this is just ones in Cranbourne that have contacted me. The Casey Pastors Network and the Cranbourne Christian Ministers Association were not given any notice of the change in policy until a letter was sent out on Friday 23 September. “None of the people in those groups had any prior knowledge and both groups have written letters to council as all of us have been taken by shock,” Pastor Cayzer said. The Turning Point Church currently hires three halls from the council and with the rate increase, the cost of that hire will increase as well. The church has been forced to reconsider the level of community sup-

more for rent or close programs or lower the amount of money we can put towards events.” Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon said she tried to change this decision before the council entered caretaker mode for the upcoming elections. “We were to continue to have community rates for churches - I did identify a discrepancy in what the officers put forward but the policy went
Picture: GARY SISSONS forward without that change,” she said. “It’s wrong and we are trying to fix it.” Cr Stapledon said the policy was never intended to change the community rates status of places of worship in the City of Casey and is confident it will be rectified by the new council. “It has gone through without the change and we want to put that back to where it needs to be,” she said.
“It all depends on who is elected at this stage but no-one in their right mind would say no to changing it back. “Churches and places of worship should not be expected meet those rates.” While the council is in caretaker mode, Cr Stapledon confirmed council officers were working with the churches to have the issue sorted out by the end of November.

Spammed MPs hit back with a block By Cam Lucadou-Wells STATE and federal MP’s email inboxes have been sent more than 411,000 electronic petitions as part of Casey council’s law-and-order campaign. The figure far exceeds Casey’s population of more than 290,000 residents. On 20 September, Casey council voted to shut down the online petition as it entered into its caretaker mode in the run-up to the council elections. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the speed of the “overwhelming” public response caused the State and Federal Governments’ spam filters to “block the bulk of the emails”.
As a result the council will follow up with a letter and copy of the completed petition to each state and federal MP in November. Cr Aziz said he was disappointed by Police Minister Lisa Neville’s suggestion that the council was “playing politics with community safety” ahead of the October council elections. He cited a highly publicised home invasion in Cranbourne East that spawned a police pursuit of teenage offenders in stolen cars. “For the Minister to suggest this is a political stunt is ludicrous and is an insult to Casey residents who have been a victim of crime or who currently feel unsafe in their neighbourhoods.
“It is clear that the State Government is providing inadequate police resources in Victoria as crime is dramatically increasing and particularly so in growth areas like Casey where resources simply do not increase to match population growth. “The Minister needs to get serious about this issue - not issue platitudes.” The petition calls for more police resources in Casey, tougher penalties and sentencing for aggravated burglaries, a joint state-federal taskforce against violent street gangs and deportation of dual citizens who are jailed for violent gang crime. Though the petition has been shut down, the Casey flag will remain at half-mast until the State Govern-

Cr Aziz told the council meeting that residents remained “under siege” by violent crime. “I’m being political in raising an issue that needs political action.” Commentators on Star News’s Facebook and website pages have been sceptical about the symbolic flag move. Some posted that the council should spend more on “pro-active” measures such as CCTV around Casey and ‘ambassadors’ to patrol and report on “areas of interest”. “Flying a flag at half-mast is sure to scare off the bad guys,” wrote another.
Council divided over half-mast flag By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY councillors have raised dissenting views to the council’s flag being flown at half-mast as part of its law-and-order campaign. The flag at Casey Civic Centre has been lowered since 8 September as part of a motion introduced by mayor Sam Aziz and unanimously approved by sitting councillors. However, in a Star News election survey, councillors Susan Serey and Rafal Kaplon opposed the move, while Wayne Smith called it “drastic” and Garry Rowe labelled it an “unnecessary political stunt”. Cr Serey, of Edrington Ward, said community safety concerns could be expressed in other ways “rather than flying a half-mast flag which should be reserved for expressions of honour, grief or respect”. Four Oaks’ Cr Kaplon said political advocacy for more police resources - which was also part of the motion - could have been made without “resorting to such tactics”. “Attempts were made to suggest alternatives to the flag at half-mast but having (been) rejected, ensuring improved community safety was the priority.” The council won’t raise the flag until it gets its desired action from police and governments such as more Casey-based police, tougher sentencing and a taskforce on violent street gangs. The Australian flag, which is governed by a set of protocols, continues to fly at full mast. In the survey, Cr Aziz described
Cars burgled with ease A CLYDE North woman almost caught a couple of burglars in the act when the sound of two cars being stolen from her property woke her past midnight. About 1.30am on Wednesday 21 September, the 27-year-old woman was woken to the sound of car engines outside her house. Upon going to investigate the noise, she saw the family’s red BMW sedan and Black VM Amarok being reversed down the driveway. Police believe the keys to both cars were stolen from inside the property while the homeowners slept. Investigators were told a third vehicle, a silver Holden ute similar to a VE model, was seen speeding away from the scene of the burglary. The red BMW was located late on Thursday 22 September on Booth Crescent in Dandenong North but the VW Amarok remains missing.
Futile armed cash grab IN an attempted armed robbery, a man rolled into a take-away food store in Cranbourne West on a razor scooter and produced a blade. The unknown man left empty handed after demanding cash from the two staff members present. The incident occurred around 8.45pm on Thursday 8 September at a store on Cranbourne-Frankston Road in Cranbourne West. The male entered the store on a razor scooter and produced a small bladed weapon. He left the store on the scooter.

Lobbying for a train station for Cranbourne East
A NARRE Warren South P-plater has had his car impounded after being allegedly detected speeding at 197 km/h on Clyde Road, Berwick. The car, with an 18-year-old driver and three teenage passengers, was detected by police travelling at more than double the 80 km/h speed limit about 1.30am on 28 September. The car stopped at a red light at the intersection of Greaves Road and was pulled over by Cardinia Highway Patrol officers. The Narre Warren South driver is expected to be charged on summons with speeding offences, driving an overloaded vehicle and not displaying P-plates. His car has also been impounded for 30 days.

A CAR fire on Pound Road in Clyde North has taken police a step closer to solving a ram raid on the Mornington Peninsular. A silver or blue Nissan Patrol was found burnt out on Pound Road about 200 metres north of Thompsons Road at 3.35am on Saturday 24 September. Police believe the car, which had stolen or false number plates, was used in a ram raid where an ATM was stolen earlier the same day. Library over the decades By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Casey Cardinia Library Corporation is celebrating its 20th year of operation this year, but the employees have a history with the library that predates its incorporation. The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation was gazetted on 26 September 1996 and the first day of operation was 1 October that same year. Many of the staff members have stayed on during the different incarnations of the region's libraries and they shared some wisdom and stories to celebrate the library’s birthday. Vasu has been employed by the library in one form or another for 40 years and says she wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. “I really like my workmates, they have always been companionable to work with, and I like being with books and reading books,” she said. “You can’t read all of them unfortunately.” Meredith started working at the library 25 years ago when it was located next to the old shire offices, and says the new building is a vast improvement over how it used to be. “Our air-con was overhead fans and open windows,” she said. “Cranbourne was just a county town then, and it was very much a small community library at the centre of the country town.” The library staff said there was a special way you became a real part of the community when you worked at the library. “I knew people from back then and still know the same people so had the continuity of the public and be part of their lives which I really enjoy,” she said. “You get very attached, and it’s a lovely part of our work is that we become an extension of people’s families.” Members of the community also get attached to the library and find themselves more a part of it as they age Patricia said. “One of our current staff members used to come into story times at the Cranbourne library,” she said, “Staff there all knew her and she got to know the staff; she grew up and became a shelver and a junior library officer and is now a home library

“Every introduction of technology has been time saving for us,” Patricia said. “It’s improved the quality of service we can provide. When I started, we were still stamping dates in the front of the books and I would go home covered in ink.” As technology develops and communities change, the staff at The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation believe that they and the books will be around for a long while yet. “Personally, I like to read a real book, it gives
me more pleasure rather than looking at a small screen, I would be very sad if the print book went away,” Vasu said. Pam said that libraries would continue to evolve and be part of the community. “Even the role of the library has changed and evolved into a space where people want to meet,” she said. “It has become more a space and community environment.”

While all of the candidates that did attend the forum had specific issues they stood for, there were consistent themes many of the candidates would like to address, if elected to council. The most consistent theme spoken about by the candidates on the night was the need for council to engage disillusioned youth back into the community. Other issues that candidates agreed needed to be addressed are financial management, early intervention crime prevention, and community infrastructure.

THE Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) recently hosted a candidate’s forum for the upcoming council elections, but were disappointed with the turnout. The meeting was held at the Cranbourne Public Hall on Monday 26 September, and while 11 candidates and one incumbent from three wards attended, only 15 residents came along. In a statement following the meeting, Jim Duthie of the CRRA said the low attendance was a sad indictment on the quality of the candidates. “Once again it has proven that many
of the candidates had not wanted to take advantage of an opportunity to meet the citizens of Casey that they claimed they want to represent,” he said. “It can only be concluded that these were the 'dummies' or arrogant people who were above talking with residents.” Cr Louise Berkelmans was the only incumbent to attend the forum, and complimented the candidates running in her ward. “I’ve got some very strong competition out there, but I’m staying positive,” she said. “My main focus has been and remains community safety, I have no competition in my passion for that.”

POLICE have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a pursuit in Cranbourne North in the early hours of Thursday morning, 22 September. Cranbourne police intercepted a stolen white Ford BA ute near the intersection of the South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road. The driver, a 44-year-old Hampton Park man, was arrested at the scene on outstanding warrants. During the arrest his 22-year-old passenger drove off and fled police. Operations Response Unit police later sighted the ute on the South Gippsland Highway and engaged in a short low-speed pursuit before arresting the Cranbourne man at 4.20am near the intersection of Clyde Road and Five Ways Road. A large amount of cash and drugs were found in the vehicle. Investigators have appealed for a witness, believed to have been riding a large brown motorcycle, to come forward. MUCH discussion continues about Pauline Hanson’s recent speech in the Senate. There has been an on-going debate about who said: “Immigrants, not Australians, must adapt. Take it or leave it.” Whoever said it, like Pauline Hanson, that person is politically right. I migrated to Australia with my family because I considered Australia to be a better place. Here, I can still enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, freedom of movement that don’t exist in many of the countries from which migrants and refugees are coming. But, if I made a mistake and don’t like to stay I’m free to leave. I have no right to impose my language, my culture and my own personal law on all other Australians. So, it is very unfair to label Pauline Hanson racist or Islamophobic. Unlike many other Australian politicians she doesn’t hesitate to call a spade a spade. The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull touched the right chord when he addressed the United Nations Assembly on the issue of immigration. The number one priority for all Western civilizations remains national security and border protection. This reminds us of the statement he had made some time ago: “European authorities have lost control of their own security” and there is “an inability to know who is within its borders”. What many political leaders, including Angela Merkel, François Hollande and the EU President Jean-Claude Junker tend to forget is that the world is changing fast. “The Schengen Agreement that allows the EU’s 400 million residents and other nonEU nationals to freely cross Europe without showing an ID or waiting to be screened” should be reviewed or redrafted. Otherwise, it will prove Tony Abbott 100 per cent right. “This awesome instinct is leading Europe into catastrophic error.” Eliezer Francois, Endeavour Hills.

WITH reference to an article in your esteemed paper of Thursday 22 September. What really caught our eyes is the second last paragraph. “Mr Phillips told Star News he was surprised the figures were revealed after being confidentially provide to the council.” This is a very dirty tactic by the council. Many questions asked by ratepayers of the council and their response to these questions, they come under commercial confidentiality and cannot be disclosed. They just do not care about anyone. When some residents approached their councillors for help they were informed “I can’t comment because it’s an insurance matter” A Casey Parks and Gardens employee suggested the London plane trees must be OK because there had only ever been two complaints about them and because Casey had planted fewer of them than the City of Melbourne. Inquiries on behalf of the Barnsley Drive residents were meet with the reply that the complainants had failed to follow “correct procedure” by lodging the appropriate form for their complaint about the impact of London plane trees. Following a complaint from me, I was assured the residents would be mailed out the “correct compensation form”. Two days later an empty envelop arrived at their home containing nothing more than a

I'm paying for police I WRITE to put the point and question why, as a tax payer in the state of Victoria, am I being asked by my family about reports of increases recently in serious crimes around Casey. And today it’s all over the radio about Casey and Cardinia - car thefts from garages, break and enters etc. Why do I have to spend $4000 for CCTV, alarms, floodlights and gates. Business South East. THERE was no disputing who the expert on drug pill weights was during a recent Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing. A magistrate who thought an ecstasy pill might weigh three grams was swiftly corrected by the accused. The man in the dock who was charged with possessing more than 700 tablets told the court the pills actually weighed 0.3 grams. “Well there you go,” the judge said - with a wry smile - to the man’s lawyer. AN ACCUSED facing a raft of theft charges made a valiant attempt to cover his tracks when questioned by police. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told the accused man’s fingerprints were linked to
the theft of three pairs of glasses and sunglasses valued at $1000 from a parked car. He allegedly told police at the time that another person with the “same fingerprints as mine” must have been the offender. After pleading guilty in court, he was convicted, placed on an 80-hour community work order and ordered to reimburse the victim. A FORMER Casey councillor Bob Halsall has resurfaced for council elections - in the City of Kingston. In an ad in one of the local papers, Mr Halsall introduces himself as an owner of a mattress shop at Chelsea Market. The councillor, who once infamously dropped the C-bomb twice during a Casey council meeting, promised voters he’d give them “a voice on council”.
Spitting over dummy deal By Cam Lucadou-Wells A STATED independent local election candidate has slammed the use of preference deals - and apparent dummy candidates despite a ban on how-to-vote cards in Casey council elections. Many candidates have advised voters to preference other candidates - in de facto how-tovote card fashion - in the text of their election statements. These statements will be mailed out with ballot papers to voters from 4 October. Sitting and former councillors are the chief beneficiaries of the preference deals, with many stated independents unallied in such a manner. An exasperated James Williams, standing as an independent without preferences in Edrington Ward, said the dummy-candidate practice was a “devious act”. “They are effectively saying they cannot win on their own merits, therefore they need someone to put them second so they get that vote as well. “If the person is willing to attempt to deceive constituents to get votes, then what are they prepared to do once they are voted in. “The question has to be asked what the people who are dummies are getting out of it? It
shows very poor judgment and a complete lack of integrity.” On the face of it, some ward ballot papers are dominated by dummy candidates - people standing with no intention to represent ratepayers but just to garner and pass on votes to a contender. Most of these suspects have failed to return Star News election surveys, though some were unable to be contacted due to not providing an email address to the Victorian Electoral Commission. In Balla Balla Ward, three of the five candidates direct preferences to sitting councillor Geoff Ablett. None of the three provided email contact information to the VEC. The remaining candidate Tom Rennick, endorsed by Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA), does not state preferences. Edrington Ward councillors and Liberal members Susan Serey and Mick Morland preference one another - and benefit from preferences from three others. CRRA endorsed candidate Timothy Jackson, who states he is independent, is preferenced by one candidate. Four Oaks councillor Rafal Kaplon exchanges preferences

with councillor Rosalie Crestani, and receives preferences from four other candidates. He is seemingly not as popular as former mayor Shar Balmes, who is re-contesting Four Oaks and attracted six candidates’ preferences. One of Cr Kaplon’s supporters didn’t provide any contact details to the VEC, and one of Ms Balmes’s allies didn’t provide an email address. In Mayfield, sitting councillor Amanda Stapledon and Neighbourhood Watch Casey head Rob Ward have preferenced one another. They are also preferenced by another six candidates. Liberal councillor Garry Rowe has one such ally candidate. River Gum ward councillors Damien Rosario and Wayne Smith (ALP) combine for seven stated supporting candidates though not sharing all of them in common. Mayor Sam Aziz said his seven supporting Springfield ward candidates, including sitting councillor Louise Berkelmans, were all worthy candidates in their own right. CRRA president Rex Flannery and former councillor Paul Richardson have swapped preferences, with Mr Flannery also gaining support from others.

Pride soars TO MARK its 15th anniversary, Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park opened its new 20 aviary orange-bellied parrot breeding facility on Thursday 22 September. The orange-bellied parrot is one of the world’s rarest and most endangered animals. With less than 50 of the parrot species left in the world, the new aviary gives a significant boost to the captive breeding program with the facility able to house 40 birds and breed up to 100 birds each year. The specialised off-theground aviaries are designed as a quarantine facility to prevent the spread of beak and feather disease, which can affect these parrots in the wild, and feature two 12 metre long free-flight aviaries for non-breeding seasons. Zoos Victoria has contributed almost $100,000 towards the development of the new aviary with the privately owned Moonlit Sanctuary also financially supporting the construction and ongoing maintenance of the facility. Moonlit Sanctuary director Michael Johnson said the facility “helps us take a huge step towards growing the captive population of orange-bellied parrots for release into the wild”. “We are thankful to the funding provided by Zoos Victoria - this contribution and partnerships between governments, community groups, zoos, and the orange-bellied parrot recovery team is key to the survival

Moonlit Sanctuary has been a key partner in the orange-bellied parrot program since 2013 and is committed to spending $500,000 over the next 10 years to run the new breeding facility. Zoos Victoria’s Acting General Manager of Threatened Species Dr Michael Magrath said the new aviaries provided a significant boost to the captive breeding program. “Saving species is very
much a team effort and it is terrific to have Moonlit Sanctuary substantially expanding on their involvement and commit to saving this iconic bird from extinction,” Dr Magrath said. This spring, Moonlit Sanctuary will release three orange-bellied parrots from its captive-bred population at their breeding site in Melaleuca on the south coast of Tasmania. The new breeding facility features a viewing platform for visitors, an educational space to learn about the species, and a nest cam to observe the breeding behaviours of orange-bellied parrots. Moonlit Sanctuary also contributes to other threatened species recovery and breeding programs including regent honeyeaters, bush-stone curlews and spot-tailed quolls.

A YOUNG woman has organised her first community event to raise money for a family in need, and has succeeded in reaching her fund-raising goal. Brooke Skews lost her best friend in a horror car smash in Lynbrook seven years ago, and has maintained close ties with the family since. Since the shock death of 16-year-old Riyani Lowen, mother Emma Lowen has had a rough time coming to terms with the loss. Ms Skews held a family fun day in Hampton Park to raise money to assist the Lowen family, and she says it was a huge success. “It went really well,” Ms Skews said. “The local CFA came down and that was big hit with the kids, everyone loved the music performers, Jarrod James and KidwithaKalling, they really got the crowd up and moving. “All the volunteers on the day also helped out so much.” Ms Skews said Emma Lowen was overwhelmed by the amount of community support that was shown through all the people attending and helping organise the family fun day. “Emma was really overwhelmed with the support,” she said. “It has been a long time she has been on her own dealing with it, and she hasn’t left the house in a while, but she came

The Cranbourne Training Complex is set to get a state-of-the-art veterinary centre.
Training vet THE Cranbourne Training Complex is set to get even bigger, with the inclusion of a veterinary centre. The complex is the state’s largest thoroughbred training centre, and has joined with Robertson-Smith Partners to develop a state-of-the-art veterinary centre. The complex has called the centre an important addition to
the south east of Melbourne, adding that 50 per cent of the state’s thoroughbred population is based in the region. Chief executive officer Neil Bainbridge said: “The timing of the veterinary centre is very important; it will not only service the on course stabled horses, but all horses currently training in Cranbourne and those horses throughout the south east of Victoria.”
The training complex will soon be home to 246 thoroughbreds based at the new $6.5M on course stabling facility as part of stage one of the upgrades. The centre will release a further 250 boxes on course in 2017 in stage two. Construction of the new veterinary centre is expected to commence in late 2016.

Train assault case fought By Cam Lucadou-Wells A CRANBOURNE West man will fight charges after allegedly punching then pushing another man off a railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks in Noble Park. Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, faces charges including assault, recklessly causing serious injury and reckless conduct over the incident at Yarraman station about 5.53pm on 8 April. Police told Dandenong Mag-
istrates’ Court on 26 September that the victim had suffered a permanent limp as a result of the incident but were awaiting further medical records. Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson said Tangatapoto claimed he acted in self-defence after the victim allegedly threatened to stab him with a hypodermic needle. “There’ll be an argument if what my client says is correct does that justify his response? “Was that reasonable and appropriate to what my client
says confronted him.” Tangatapoto’s claim however could not be substantiated by police - who did not search the victim’s bag at the time, Mr Eidelson said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Mr Eidelson that police at the time “wouldn’t have a reason” to search the victim’s bag. Noting police did not object to the matter being tried summarily, Mr Vandersteen booked the hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Balla Balla Community Centre is again holding its Celebrate Diversity and Culture in Cranbourne Photography Competition. The competition is open to all members of the community and aims to celebrate the diversity and culture that makes Cranbourne unique. Balla Balla Community Centre manager Maree Cullinan said the aim of the competition is to bring the community of Cranbourne together. “The competition is about diversity within a community and culture,” she said. “This means any kind of cul-
ture from sport to school and everything in between - that’s what a culture is, it’s not about race or nationality.” The competition requires the entered photos to be accompanied by a small explanation of what they mean and the creative process behind it. The exhibition of the photographs will coincide with the week of World Hello Day and share many of the same themes of peace and unity within community. “We want people to celebrate their community and for them to determine what their photo is going to be,” Ms Cullinan said. “People who may not have
a chance to communicate normally will come together that night to talk about their pictures and story behind them.” The photos from the competition will be used to cover all the walls of the foyer of the Balla Balla Centre and will remain on display until after Australia Day 2017. The competition is open to entrants of all ages with four categories for people to enter photos including junior, intermediate, open, and senior with a separate prize for best in competition overall. Cop cuppa By Victoria Stone-Meadows POLICE officers in the City of Casey area have been getting to know residents over a hot cup of coffee as part of the Coffee with a Cop program. The program aims to bring police and the communities they protect closer together by making police officers more accessible. Members of the community are able to access their local police officers in non-crisis situations and in the relaxed atmosphere of a cafe or shopping centre. Thursday 22 September saw police officers from Cranbourne and Narre Warren police stations at a cafe in the Fountain Gate shopping centre speaking
to community members. Acting Sergeant at Narre Warren police station Geoff Howe said the experience was very worthwhile and he was keen to do it again. “It was a really good experience and I would do it again for sure.� he said. “I was a bit hesitant beforehand, wondering if it was going to be a waste of time but it was great. He said many residents raised concerns with him regarding the number of burglaries that have occurred in the Casey area, but added that he assured people they were actually quite rare. “It is very rare these incidents actually occur and mem-
bers of the public should feel safe,� he said. “They only get attention and small incidents seem big because of the type of incident.� “I have worked for Victoria Police for 12 years and Casey is pretty safe and nice place to live; it hasn’t really changed just got busier.� Sgt Howe said his favourite part of the day was the kids on school holidays who came to meet their local police officers. “Lots of kids were dressed up as police which was just great,� he said. Now’s the time to plan the party IT IS never too early to book a work Christmas party. Christmas is a busy time with a lot of commitments, the last minute rush at work, finishing up school and other events for the year, planning holiday breaks or for those in retail - dealing with the Christmas rush. Diaries fill up fast with functions - not only for those attending but also for the venues. So the earlier a booking is made the more likely the client is going to get exactly what they want and where they want it. Some organisations have a standard booking each year and some get in as early as six months ahead. However, for most organisations this is either over-kill or not possible and so late September and earlier October is the prime time to make bookings and start booking those Christmas celebrations. First things first, it’s important to establish the type of Christmas party wanted - relaxed, formal, small, large or something out of the ordinary and
look for options. Budget and timing are also key factors in deciding which venue will be perfect. Doing a bit of research is essential, check out the advertisements newspapers for any good deals that might be around for favourite venues. This is the time of year when venues will be looking for bookings too and will have announced any special packages that they have going. Talk to friends and colleagues about previous parties - word of mouth is always good but remember some venues may have changed hands or management teams and what was boring last year might be the place to be now. Compile a list of favourite options to be circulated around the workplace, making sure the venue chosen has dietary options for all those attending and that there are public transport or other options available for getting home safely.

With plenty for seniors to enjoy ALL across Australia, state governments hold weeks and festivals honouring the older members of our community. While NSW has theirs in April and Queensland in August, the Victorian Seniors Week is held in glorious October weather. The event includes the Victorian Seniors Festival, an event to honour seniors in Victoria - held in October every year at various locations around the Melbourne CBD. The week-long festival includes an array of events, activities and entertainment for all seniors. The festival is organised by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services to encourage seniors to get out there and participate in and enjoy a wide range of more than 1300 activities; all generally free or low-cost. Free and low-cost events and activities are presented across Victoria, including concerts, dances, theatre shows, celebratory morning teas, tours, a host of indoor and outdoor recreation activities and much more. The State Government provides eight days of free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders in metropolitan and regional Victoria for the period 2-9 October 2016 and five days of free V/Line travel between 3-6 October and on Saturday 8 October. But this festival is not contained just to the city, events can also be found all over Victoria with local councils and community groups running hundreds of events. The City of Casey’s Ageing Positively Festival runs throughout October, offering more than 100 events and activities to inspire, connect and involve residents aged 55 and over. Held each year in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival, the festival is a celebration of Casey’s older residents and their ongoing contribution to the municipality.
City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler said the program will feature a great variety events, activities and information sessions throughout the month of October. “The Ageing Positively Festival provides opportunities across Casey for older residents to get

Fresh take on food needs By Victoria Stone-Meadows FOOD glorious food was the overall theme of the latest Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast held at Cranbourne Racecourse on Wednesday 28 September. Australian culinary legend Stephanie Alexander espoused the virtues of real food and the importance of engaging young people in every step of the food process. Alexander was one of two speakers at the breakfast who spoke of the importance of engaging young people in the food and agriculture business. Business representatives from across the Casey and Cardinia regions were treated to a presentation by Jan Vydra, managing director of the Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs that won the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year title. Mr Vydra told of his experiences travelling overseas while researching different forms of agriculture and how his early childhood had formed the way he runs his business. “I remember Mum asked my teachers in kinder why I wasn’t learning anything, and the teachers told her to just let me play, that’s how I act and motivate my staff in agriculture,” he said. “We are trying to take strides in innovation and show farming can be a choice. While Mr Vydra was travelling overseas as part of the Nuffield 2016 Scholar Program, he discovered the average age of farmers in many places around the world is 60+ years. “Farmers are ageing, and it is a common problem,” he said. “We can solve some of these problems with technology, but we need to engage young people in agriculture.” Stephanie Alexander echoed Mr Vydra’s sentiments about engaging young people in food and spoke of the value she has seen in the kitchen garden project that has been adopted by schools across the nation. What started as a pilot program at Collingwood College in 2001, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation now helps 830 schools Australia wide. “The kitchen garden is more than just a way to fight against obesity,” Ms Alexander said during her presentation. “Rather than rally students to a cause, it convinces them to move away from junk food with a fun and engaging program. “There is an important differentiation there, students work in teams, their confidence and self-esteem soars, and they gain a cultural understanding based on food.”

Fitness club ready for long haul By Victoria Stone-Meadows FERNWOOD Women’s Fitness Club in Narre Warren celebrated 21 years of operation on Wednesday 21 September with special guest Lisa Curry. The fitness club celebrated with a pop up market from local businesses, special fitness classes led by Lisa Curry, showcases of their programs, a barbecue and of course a birthday cake. Fernwood Narre Warren assistant manager Paula De Graaf said everyone who attended had a great day. “We had a full house most of the day, with current and prospective members coming and going all day,” she said. “It was just fabulous.” Ms De Graaf said although the day was very busy, it was a
great opportunity to showcase all the programs and classes the club has to offer. “We had half hour versions of our classes, showcasing our timetable from tummy-hipsthigh classes to body pump and step and ended up with Lisa Curry doing a Curry Coach Workout and presentation about exercise and wellbeing,” she said. “We even had time to sneak in a bit of a Zumba party.” The pop up market was a big hit with the club members and was completely supported by local businesses. “We had lot of different things us girls enjoy,” Ms De Graaf said. “There was envy jewellery, body shop, and different things
like hire a hubby and mobile massage.” Lisa Curry was able to give specialist advice about women’s fitness and striking a balance between staying fit and loving life. “Lisa spoke about being her age and staying fit after having been at a level of elite athlete and now talking about balance of life but still being very fit and healthy and the implementation of that as we age,” Ms De Graaf said. Ms De Graaf said 21 years of operation shows how well Fernwood Narre Warren operates in the community and hopes for more great years to come. “We have a really strong base in the area; we have been here a long time and plan to stay a long time,” she said.

Art’s flow of admiration A PAINTING of black cockatoos took out the top prize at this month’s Great Art Show. Provenance Art staged the show at Nossal High School, Berwick. Paintings, drawings and sculptures were enjoyed by a steady flow of people over the weekend of 18 and 19 September. The show was opened on Friday night by Sir Gustav Nossal. The judges this year were Geoff Sargeant, a renowned local artist specialising in coloured pencil, and Sam Michelle, a Berwick painter, both award winners in their own right. The Best Painting in Show award went to Deborah Polman for her Carnaby Cockatoos which the judges praised as a “wonderfully thought out and well executed contemporary painting”. Best Oil Painting award went to Zoe Panagiotopoulos for The Guarded Heart and Best Oil for an emerging artist went to Jenni Miller for Beyond. Best Acrylic award went to Brad Trembath for Kookaburra and Best Acrylic by an Emerging Artist went to Trevor Plane for Rose N Shine. Ironman in a steely effort By Russell Bennett CRANBOURNE triathlete Levi Maxwell has made a brilliant start to life in the professional ranks - finishing second at the prestigious Challenge Vietnam. Maxwell, who is now predominantly based in Geelong, swam 1.9 kilometres, did a 90-kilometre bike leg, and also ran a gruelling 21.2 kilometres in an outstanding feat of mind over matter - finishing second behind Mitch Robins, a seasoned multiple ironman. Carlos Quinchara Forero, who finished third, competed at the 2012 London Olympics. “I didn’t have a great swim, it’s something I have been working hard on to improve but this didn’t reflect in my performance as it was just one of those days where things just didn’t feel good,” Maxwell explained.
“I kept getting caught up in the rope that followed the course which slowed me down a few times.” He was sixth out of the water and well and truly had his work cut out to catch those in front of him. “Being an out, then four laps, and back course allowed me the opportunity to see how I was going and ride accordingly,” Maxwell said. “I managed to pull back the lead group during the third lap of the bike and go into the lead. “This resulted in me producing the fastest bike split for the day thanks to the help of my Giant Trinity. “Out of T2 I was leading with Mitch hot on my heels. “I was feeling good but knew Mitch was a strong athlete and it was going to be a tough battle.
We played cat and mouse for 18 kilometres, running shoulderto-shoulder, or just in front of one another when Mitch made a surge up the final rise and I just couldn’t pull him back.” There was only 36 seconds in it from first to second place. “Overall I am very pleased but of course would’ve loved to have gone one better,” Maxwell said. “It was an invaluable experience and a confidence boost leading into my first ironman in three weeks in Taiwan. “As always, thank you so much to the people close to me who have supported me from the start and stayed by my side during this transitional period (into the professional ranks).” Maxwell was the youngest and most inexperienced professional to compete at Challenge Vietnam.

DDCA’s comings and goings By Nick Creely THE Dandenong District Cricket Association is set for another massive season, as all clubs start afresh and begin their quest to take out one of the hardest premierships to win in Victoria, Turf 1. All clubs are raring to go and have each got their own claim to this year’s title. If we thought last year’s signings were impressive, this year’s talent is going to make for some interesting reading. Former domestic cricketers will feature once again, as will former Premier cricketers. But what is so intriguing and exciting about this year’s DDCA competition is the array of international signings. Steven Mullaney, Luke Fletcher, Iraq Thomas and Jurgan Anderson are just some of the impressive list of names we will see strutting their stuff this season. Here is a team by team preview of this year’s competition, which will begin on 8 October: BERWICK Coach: The Cricket Operations Group will manage the coaching department. Dogs devoured Scorpions By Nick Creely FOOTSCRAY have upstaged the Casey Scorpions to win their second VFL premiership in three seasons after a stunning eight-goal third quarter in Sunday’s grand final at Etihad Stadium. The 31-point loss flattered the losing side, who were hapless in trying to stop a rampaging Bulldogs side which ran hard all day and provided the crowd of 17,348 with an exciting brand of football. The Etihad curse for Casey, who are the affiliate of Melbourne in the AFL continued, with 14 AFL-listed players again feeling the agony of another loss at the ground. In fact, Melbourne or Casey has not won a match since 2007 on Etihad Stadium, and it wasn’t even called that at the time. Casey, the minor premiers after the home-and-away season, were heavy favourites to claim their first flag since 1999, but will now have to lick their wounds and move on to 2017. The game was hot early as both sides struggled to get through the defensive zones of their opposition, and it seemed both sides were up for a fierce contest. Going into the half-time break, the Scorpions held a narrow lead and were starting to control the game on their terms. In what was a Jekyll and Hyde kind of performance, Casey just simply dropped their bundle and was unable to recover. The eight-goal blitz was breathtaking by the Dogs, who moved the ball with skill and pace and then defensively were ruthless going the other way. The Scorpions were just simply unable to stop the momentum and were under pressure and making mistakes which have not been sighted in their impressive season. Scorpions coach Justin Plapp spoke to the media after the game, and was deflated and shattered for his players. “Look we’re disappointed but we spoke to the players saying they need to be able to play 120 minutes and we weren’t able to do that today. “I can’t question the player’s commitment for 90 minutes of the game, the other half-hour they checked out.
Clayton Oliver bursts away with the ball. “We felt that we had the game in pretty good shape at half-time, and we probably didn’t see what happened in the third quarter coming. “They’ll learn from it, our younger kids and older blokes, it’s going to sit in their guts for a fair while, I know it is with me. “When you get 40 or 50 points down like that, you’ve got to make sure every opportunity counts and you know we missed a few. “It’s just such a hollow feeling,” a disappointed Plapp said. Plapp was also quick to praise the Bulldogs performance, citing their impressive style of football and hunger for the contest. “They were better around the contest; they were able to do it for longer. “Their ability to win and get the ball to the outside was something we had to be aware of and they were able to do that and they made all their opportunities count in that third-quarter,” Plapp said. Lin Jong was outstanding for the Bulldogs, and was duly awarded the Norm Goss Medal as best-on-ground. Jong finished with 29 disposals, nine marks and six inside-50s, while captain Jordan Russell was instrumental down back, amassing 24 disposals, nine marks and seven rebounds. For the Scorpions, inside-midfielder Clayton Oliver couldn’t have done more and was Casey’s best, while Matt

New courts ace By Russell Bennett THE Harkaway Tennis Club has brand new courts at a conveniently central location, but not many in the Casey or Cardinia area would even know where it is. Located at Dalton Reserve just off King Road - opposite the hall after turning right at the main roundabout in town - the club is just five minutes from Berwick. That’s it. And yet new club coach Alex Hogan started with just 25 youngsters in his coaching program. That number has since nearly doubled, but he’s hoping for between 60 and 80 before too long so he can dedicate four solid nights a week to coaching. The club has a highly-successful recent competition history - winning four premiership titles - but the previous state of the courts turned some away. “I don’t think membership was a big thing previously - a lot of players just played for the club and the club made no money and was running itself into
the ground,” Hogan admitted. “We got the four brand new courts so they did the fencing, the synthetic, and the two hard courts they’ve painted down the bottom. “At the end of last year, teams were coming to the club and they’d refuse to play because kids were falling over and you could pick up parts of the court. It wasn’t in a great state.” Hogan has tripled the coaching hours at the club and aims to field seven competition teams from Harkaway. The club is growing, but slowly - particularly in comparison to some clubs in and around Berwick with upwards of 25 teams. “I’ve had a few kids come across from Berwick and half of them don’t know that the tennis club is here,” he said. “They go to the roundabout, they turn and they drive past. At the moment I’m just trying to get it on the map - I’ve started a website and a Facebook page. I’m just getting the club out there a little bit.”

It’s gaining momentum though, which is good.”
Hogan said one of the club’s biggest strengths was its diehard committee - including Michael, Heidi and Sian - which takes a tremendous amount of pride in seeing the club succeed. Medium Peugeot writ large By Alistair Kennedy THE jostling continues among imported car makers to occupy the void that’s about to be created when local production of large passenger cars ceases over the next 12 months or so. Previously ‘medium’ cars will in future carry the mantle of large cars and are likely to attract increasing buyer interest when, or if, the current SUV bubble ever bursts and traditional passenger cars come back into fashion. Among the jostlers is Peugeot with the largest model in its range, the 508. It’s sold in sedan and station wagon format, the latter a large spacious vehicle that will suit many buyers’ needs. Indeed the wagon fits perfectly into the idea known as the ‘grand touring’ segment. Peugeot 508 has been on sale here since mid-2011 where it effectively replaced two previous models, the smaller 407 and the larger 607. It was given a mid-life update in September 2015 including some styling tweaks that have given it a bolder look although it remains conservative enough to suit its target market. Three variants are available, in increasing levels of equipment named Active, Allure and GT. The entry-level active is powered by a 1.6-litre turbopetrol while Allure and GT each have 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines but with different levels of tune.
Model range
Peugeot 508 GT is a comfortable and energy efficient long-distance cruiser. Potential buyers should note that the GT models are only available on special order. The front of the 508 has a tall, flat bonnet above an almost vertical ‘Peugeot corporate’ grille that’s highlighted by the iconic Peugeot Lion badge. The headlamps incorporate LED elements and daytime running lights. The large rear bumper also adds to the angular appearance and the rear lights have a square, imposing look. Overall it’s a neat, unfussy design that is likely to appeal to the conservative buyer. There’s plenty of interior room
with front-wheel drive freeing up extra space in both the rear centre seat and the boot - space that’s stolen by the layout of the RWD Commodore and Falcon. The Peugeot sedan has 497 litres of boot space, expandable to 1533 litres with the rear seatbacks folded while the wagon has 612 and 1817 litres respectively. The seats are comfortable and supportive although we found them a little lower than we prefer, even when at their highest position. The GT models get leather sports seats with contrasting red stitching

Peugeot is progressively upgrading its engines to meet Euro 6 requirements and the 508 GT is the latest model to get the improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions benefits of these standards. Power and torque are 133 kW (at 3750 rpm) and 400 Nm (at 2000 revs)
respectively. The new 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine has factory-tested fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle with emissions at 114 grams per 100 kilometres. With its 72-litre fuel tank this equates to a possible 1636 km trip without refuelling. The 1.6-litre e-THP turbo-petrol is also a Euro 6 unit with outputs of 121 kW and 240 Nm, consumption of 5.6 L/100 km and emissions of 130 g/km. The 508 Allure has an older, less efficient, Euro 5 engine with less performance (120 kW and 340 Nm), higher fuel usage (5.7 L/100km) and more emissions (149 g/km). All models use a new lightweight design of Aisin six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Standard safety in both models include six airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; stability and traction control; LED daytime running lights and foglamps; blind-spot monitoring; available parallel parking space measurement and hill start assist. We did several inter-city trips in the now superseded 407 Touring diesel and would have no hesitation in doing the same in the new 508 GT, especially with the claimed ability to travel, for example, from Sydney to Adelaide without refuelling.
