Arts and crafts to go on show

By Monique Kuzeff OPEN Day at Kensington Gardens will involve much more than information sessions and a tour of the spectacular village.

Prospective residents are invited to come along and view the arts and crafts show that will be displayed on the day showcasing the diverse talent and activities that Kensington Gardens offers.

The arts and crafts committee is made up by the sundry and talented residents at the village.

With the arts and crafts show being such a success last year within the village, the committee thought it would be nice to show prospective residents the talent at Kensington Gardens and activities they could get involved in.

The show will display an array of art, craft, felting, woodwork, metal work, silk work, quilting and small pottery items that will also be for sale at reasonable prices.

Kensington Gardens residents Wendy Drummond and Trisha Bartling, who are involved with the arts and crafts, said the committee invited all “hands-on” residents to have an input into the arts and crafts show on Open Day. “We have extremely creative residents here, particularly ones who are great at painting and

crafts,” Ms Bartling said.

“Our show last year was only for the residents and that was extremely successful, but this year it is open to everyone, practically everyone came along and a lot of paintings were sold.”

Ms Drummond said Kensington Gardens is a “fantastic” place for retired people who are still looking to remain active and social.

“Our arts and crafts commit-

tee are always having so much fun and laughing,” she said.

“It’s something I look forward to and it’s social. A lot of people here get involved in all sorts of different things as there’s so much to do.”

Kensington Gardens will hold the Open Day on 15 October.

AT KENSINGTON Gardens a residents’ workshop is available to all residents so that they don’t have to give up their skills, hobbies or passions.

For those who enjoy woodwork, metal work, pottery or even glass making, this workshop welcomes residents to come down and utilise the equipment and machinery.

After undertaking an occupational health and safety induction, residents are able to use the workshop at any time between 9am and 4pm on Monday to Friday and 9am to noon on Saturdays.

Those involved in the workshop are also often involved in voluntary maintenance of the village itself.

Resident Darrell Richards said when he moved to Kensington Gardens from Newcastle with his wife in 2014, the resident workshop was something he was “pretty keen” to get up and running.

Over those two years, he and other residents involved with the workshop have completed various projects for themselves and for the village.

“We’ve made some bench sets with cast iron ends and wood slats,” Mr Richards said.

“Some of our projects included refurbishing the bus and park seats, benches and letter boxes.”

Mr Richards said when he first moved to the area he had to learn about the locals and other aspects. Through the resident workshop he was able to meet other residents and it quickly became a place where he could go to relax and enjoy himself.

“Woodwork is something I’ve always enjoyed doing and I also like meeting people,” he said.

“It’s not only for hands-on activity but also for companionship.

Every Monday morning, those involved in the workshop attend a “tool box talk” which runs from 10am to noon.

“Anyone who may not have the ability to work on or hasn’t worked on woodwork or metal work is definitely welcome to

It’s the centre for social events PETER and Sue Jack are two of Kensington Gardens’ newest residents and the first to move into stage six.

Both Peter and Sue have lived in Albury all their lives, with Sue’s family history stretching back six generations and Peter being a founding partner of an insurance brokerage firm in central Albury, a position he operated for 30 years.

A few years after retiring Peter began work at Kensington Gardens as a fortnight weekend host, a role he continues to enjoy after eight years. “As a weekend host, I’ve seen many functions and activities happening, one particular time that stands out was when the social committee was setting up for a Christmas function. “I recall thinking ‘gee, it looks like they are going to have a good time here’,� Peter said. “There have been a few times I came to the estate to socialise with residents at the bar, it was these times which got me thinking about moving here ... and look at us now!�

Both Peter and Sue said they have a much bigger social life at the estate. “As a new resident everyone is so welcoming and friendly, there’s a wide variety of functions and it’s great not to have to drive home afterwards,� Sue said. “We’re involved in a lot of activities like snooker, weekly craft, mahjong, monthly birthday dinners, ANZAC Day barbecues, the St Patrick’s Day activities and scheduled bus trips.�

Deal is denied

By Monique Kuzeff NEW Albury Mayor Kevin Mack has denied that he did a deal with his new deputy mayor councillor Amanda Cohn for them to back each other for their respective roles.

His response came after he was voted in to the two-year term in his former role as Albury mayor after winning a five to four vote at the council meeting on Monday night.

“I didn’t at any stage ask Amanda or offer a deal to Amanda to be the deputy mayor,” he told a media gathering after the vote.

“I thought David did a wonderful job, David didn’t want that support and essentially Amanda was the one I felt would best represent the group.”

The election reshuffle included Amanda Cohn being appointed deputy mayor after winning five votes to four that then saw both Cr Henk van de Ven and Cr David Thurley ousted from the top roles on the council.

Cr Mack, who previously served as mayor from 2013 to 2015, secured his position with the support of his ticket members Cr Darren Cameron, Cr Amanda Cohn, Cr John Stuchbery and Cr Murray King.

New South Wales Government changes means the positions are now held for two years instead of the pervious one year.

Addressing media, Cr Mack said he felt “privileged” to be elected again as mayor saying he had previously taken the role for “granted”.

“To have (the role) back is quite overwhelming,” he said.

“I took it for granted three years ago, I think.

“It’s certainly a privilege to lead this beautiful city and I thank my predecessor Cr van de Ven for leaving it in good shape.

“As a council group we will contin-

With the challenges that lie ahead for the city, Cr Mack said he was eager to get on with the job.

He flagged employment, tourism and events and the retention of the Lavington pool as being some of his main priorities heading in to

his new post.

“We need to work in a very soft employment market where not a lot of people are being employed,” he said.

“We need to encourage new businesses in to Albury and certainly encourage the offer we have in terms of tourism and events.

“Importantly, we need to get the

Lavington Sports precinct up and running, we need to get the Wagga Road stuff happening and we need to start creating business opportunities here in this city.”

After taking out Cr van de Ven’s role, Cr Mack said his friendship with the former mayor would not be “tarnished” because of “aspirational ideals”.

“Everyone has a democratic process that they must pursue.

“He enjoyed the job as much as I did previously and when people enjoy things they fight for it.

“This council has been a great council for the last four years. This new council will even be a greater council. As we improve our job becomes an easier job.”

A better childcare fit

By Monique Kuzeff WHEN it comes to childcare not all parts of Australia suit the “one size fits all” model, according to Indi MP Cathy McGowan who continues to lobby the government in regard to funding a childcare model suitable for rural and regional families.

The Indi MP said the streamlined Budget Based Funding and Family Assistance Legislation Amendments Bill 2015 failed to take into account the different circumstances of delivering services to rural and regional Australia.

She remained persistent in pressuring the government to consider a second stream of funding for mobile childcare services and successfully convinced the Senate to set up a committee to look at the legislation again, and launch an inquiry on 15 September.

Parts of the current legislation on childcare will “impact” the type of childcare operating in regional areas such as Albury and Wodonga, Ms McGowan told NewsWeekly.

“The government is looking to cut all the funding for mobile childcare,” she said.

Neighbourhood Barbecues

“I’m calling upon families to put submissions in to the inquiry, so hopefully the government will change its legislation as a result of that.”

If the new funding stream is approved it would save 45 mobile childcare services across the country, including the one that operates out of the Albury Wodonga Community College delivering services to families in north east Victoria and southern NSW rural locations.

“All children must be able to access essential childcare and educa-

tion services, including those living outside of metropolitan Australia,” Ms McGowan said.

“Without this strategy there is an expectation the transition from budget based funding would mean most mobile services would be unsustainable.”

THE fallout of methamphetamine (ice) and other drugs infecting local communities throughout regional Australia has become a priority issue for state governments.

Wodonga Council was one of five organisations that recently received funding towards local initiatives to educate the community on ice and other drug abuse in their local area.

The funding comes as part of the Victorian State Government’s Community Ice Action Plan (CIAP) which has more than $100 million invested for the purpose of tackling the issue across the state.

Wodonga Council acquired an $8700 injection as part of the CIAP grants that will be used to hold two Collective Impact forums in which key stakeholders are to speak on drug-related harm in the community.

City of Wodonga CEO Patience Harrington said the grant would enable the council and stakeholders to share their understanding of ice and other drug use in the community, and develop an action plan.

Ms Harrington said statistics from Wodonga police showed a rise in drug-related crime and injury in Wodonga.

She said family violence had become a significant issue in Wodonga with the city sitting in the top 10 per cent for incidence of family violence when compared to the rest of Victoria.

“Alcohol and drug use is involved in approximately half of all family violence incidents in Wodonga,” she said. ”As set out in the draft Wodonga No One Left Behind: Safety, Inclusion and Equity Strategy 2016-2017 to 2021-2022, Wodonga Council has a strong commitment to improving safety, inclusion and equity to enhance the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors.”

She added Wodonga Council would continue to advocate and lobby for further funding.

Other organisations that received funding were Greater Shepparton City Council ($10,000), Black Eagles Basketball Club ($10,000), Mitchell Shire Council ($9650) and Moira Shire Council ($10,000) who will use the money to educate the community through various workshops, forums, local campaigns, training, and engagement activities.

Deputy mayor has fresh perspective

ALBURY Tigers’ season win was shadowed by an unruly act by footballer Brayden O’Hara and other team-mates which took place at the Albury Base Hospital after grand final day on Monday, 18 September.

O’Hara was recorded via Snapchat urinating into the premiership cup while wearing his Tigers uniform and premiership medal.

At a press conference last Thursday, the footballer was joined by the Albury Tigers president Stuart Hodgson and other team-mates to offer an apology to all those affected by the conduct.

O’Hara voiced his apology to media accepting “full responsibility” for his actions.

“It was not acceptable and I do not condone what I did,” he said.

“I would like to apologise to the league, its sponsors, volunteers and supporters, the Albury Base Hospital, its staff, anyone present, the emergency department, the Ovens and Murray community,” he said.

O’Hara could not offer an explanation as to how he came to urinate in the cup, saying that while he could not completely “remember” what happened, he was ashamed of the behavior that took place.

“I can’t totally remember the night, I’d just like to apologise for what I’ve done.

ALBURY’S new deputy mayor Amanda Cohn is the youngest councillor the city has seen step up to the role.

The 26-year-old, who has been practising as a trainee doctor, was voted to her new post by her fellow councillors on Monday night.

The young deputy mayor confirmed that she would reduce her hours at the hospital by changing from full-time to part-time to make more hours available for her council work.

While Cr Cohn’s limited experience in local government has made her feel a “little bit nervous” she said that her anxiety would ensure that she gave the role its “merits”.

“I don’t think you necessarily need experience to be deputy mayor.

“I think there’s certainly a view from the community that we need some fresh ideas and some fresh perspective with some of the work from council.

“I’m certainly confident that I can work with Kevin Mack who is an experienced mayor and who will be able to provide me with the support that I need.”

She was confident about her priorities for council, saying she was “clear” on them before the election.

“Obviously, I’m passionate about environmental sustainability and action on climate change,” she said.

“Making sure our council’s programs include the diversity of our community whether that’s cultural or linguistic groups, people with disabilities, people from different genders or sexuality and the young people and elderly as well.”

Having stood as the Greens candidate for Farrer during the Federal Election in July, Cr Cohn said obtaining the deputy mayoral role on council was a “huge privilege and a huge opportunity”.

“I feel really honoured to not only have had the support of the community as a councillor, but also the support of my fellow councillors as deputy mayor.”

She thanked her volunteers, supporters and fellow councillors for their support with helping her obtain her post with AlburyCity.

Mr Hodgson said the club would also be implementing a fine on top of the consequences already imposed and it would be donated directly to the Albury Base Hospital.

As the club is an accredited club with Good Sports program run by Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Mr Hodgson admitted that the acts that took place had “tarnished” the club

and leagues reputation.

“Yeah it has tarnished, there’s no doubt - the onus is now on us as a club to repair that damage and make sure that we work hard on that,” Mr Hodgson said.

“We can’t be anymore remorseful about what’s happened than we are.

“I’m extremely disappointed.”

According to Mr Hodgson, the incidents were “out of character” of

the players involved.

“Our club has a proud history and these isolated incidents are out of character of the players,” he said.

“They are unfortunate and as a result we will be strengthening our player education policy to ensure incidents such as these will not happen again.”

Both the club and players involved will be further penalised, however the sanctions have not yet been confirmed.

SES finds livestock during airborne search

By Monique Kuzeff THE Murray Region SES recently discovered livestock stranded by the flooding on properties stretching from the Hume Dam down towards Corowa via the Murray River, when it scoped the area in helicopter.

Cattle and sheep were among the livestock stranded due to the rising floodwaters.

Albury SES local patrol officer Scott Richter said farmers were being informed of the isolated livestock.

“The farmers may well have been aware of the stock and had a way to access them, but otherwise they needed to be informed about it so they could make plans to resolve the issue,” he said.

He said there would likely be some “prolonged flooding” throughout October. “(There will be continued flooding) right along the Murray River and some level of flooding is likely to follow that down on the movement towards the catchment.”

Livestock owners are advised to move livestock and other assets early and ensure adequate supplies as rain continues to fall across the region.

“Those downstream need to be aware of what is coming from upstream and start now with planning," Richter said.

EAP co-ordinator Yvonne Hunter felt “privileged” to have received the money, saying: “I can’t thank the Lions Club enough.”

“This money will help me run the program for nine kids who are suffering a mental health condition so they can get involved with the program at no cost,” she said.

“While it won’t cover costs, it will still make a difference.”

The Lavington Lions Club representatives attended an EAP practical work session, run over eight weeks.

The program is facilitated by a mental health specialist and an equine specialist working collaboratively with a horse to enable the participants to “unpack behavior” needed to be addressed for improvement in health and well-being.

THE Lavington Lions Club was pleased to find out that one of their applicants received $1000 from the Lions International Centenary ‘Community 100’ program.

Winning entrant was Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) based in Mullengandra, a rural property situated between Albury and Holbrook.

EAP uses horses to assist the personal development and team bonding in youth suffering from mental health difficulties.

The Community 100 program was a decision of the Lions Australia to create a fund that would assist 100 worthy community projects nationwide.

By Monique Kuzeff A SMALL group of like-minded creative locals who enjoy creating crafty goods just for fun have turned their hobby to a broader purpose as they gather to produce useful items for people in need.

Once a month Crafters Connect 4A Cause meet at the Sustainable Activity Centre (SAC) on Lincoln Causeway transforming old pillowcases into childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dresses, doonas into cat hammocks and towels into sanitary items for young girls in third world countries.

All items are donated to charities in need on the Border including Wodonga Dog Rescue, volunteer animal rescue, and Restart, volunteer homeless youth and family service.

The group was formed in 2014 by SAC director Claire Greenhalgh and Shelley Robotham who were inspired by the idea of converting scrap material into useful items.

Ms Greenhalgh said while she had always enjoyed sewing, she wanted to apply her interest to assist worthwhile causes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to make stuff for people in need, to use my skills to help other people,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shelley and I kind of clicked and we got talking and through that we eventually came up with the idea of a craft group.â&#x20AC;?

AROUND 55,000 visitors from right across Australia passed through the gates at the Henty Machinery Field Days - held from 20-22 September - to inspect the 868 exhibitions showcased on the biggest area in the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history.

The event drew record crowd numbers on the Tuesday before the wet weather dampened the number for the remainder of the event.

A new 120 metre Country Lifestyle pavilion was filled with more than 100 exhibitors which appeared to be a drawcard for field day visitors, according to Henty Machinery Field Days chairman Ross Edwards.

Mr Edwards said the best sale items this year were sheep and cattle handling equipment, and chaser bins.

Planning for the 2017 event is already afoot with a vision to build on the agronomy display

Urgent need for drivers

By Monique Kuzeff A FLEET of just 30 cars and minibuses are providing elderly and the disabled access to their communities right across the Hume Region but they remain stationary without volunteer drivers.

Community-based organisation Community Accessibility Inc (CA Inc) is calling upon prospective volunteers to join the team of 34 volunteer drivers in Wodonga to cater to the growing demand for the CA service on the Border.

Volunteers are what underpin this essential service, enabling the disadvantaged in regional areas to not only be able to reach appointments of all sorts but also to stay social within their community.

CA Inc lead program support officer Gail Carter said the demand for the service was “definitely” growing as more people begin to recognise the viability of it.

“With the ageing community here, this service is practical and essential for the area,” she said.

“At this time of the year the dedication of our volunteers really shines through as the ranks thin out with some away on holidays and others struck down with the winter colds.”

Volunteers are able to provide their service for as many hours as they choose between Mondays and Fridays.

Over 40,000 trips to over 3000 clients were provided by CA Inc’s

Volunteer Lee Stokes, CA Inc lead program support officer Gail Carter, volunteer David Elson, and CA Inc volunteer liaison officer Rikki Raadsveld.

240 dedicated volunteers over the last 12 months.

The service is available to anyone who cannot access public or private transport for whatever reasons.

Ms Carter said without the volunteers the organisation would not be able to operate and provide that transport.

“The volunteers are the ones who drive the sedans and the eight and 10-seat buses.

“Without them we wouldn’t be able to provide this useful service to the communities.”

The feedback from the volunteers has been positive, Ms Carter said.

“They seem to get a lot back from the relationships they build with the clients and they feel good about themselves for providing assistance to other people in their community.

“It’s such an inspiring and rewarding role and we’ve seen plenty of smiles on the drivers' faces when they recount their stories back to us.”

Winner almost missed out IT WAS a close call for an Albury man who won Division One in the weekend’s TattsLotto draw and almost tossed away his winning ticket worth more than $684,000.

But, fortunately, he double checked his ticket and made the “dream-

come-true” discovery that he was $684,477.50 richer.

“It’s unbelievable! I nearly threw it away because I didn’t have my glasses on and I just zapped it in the selfchecker machine and I’m used to it saying on the screen ‘better luck next

time’,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous, said, laughing.

“But this time I thought I’d better double check it because I’d heard there was a Division One winner on the weekend and I couldn’t believe it when I turned out to be the lucky one!

“I’ve got a big family so I can’t wait to tell them the news! They’ll each get a fair bit. I’ll be ringing my wife first!

“This will be fantastic for us - my word! It’ll mean a lot to us, we love our travelling and it’ll be great!

“We’re just simple people, we don’t go overboard, we just have a good time and make the most of it!”

Bulldogs fans’ stop-off WONDONGA played a small part in AFL history at the weekend when the town hosted more than 400 supporters on eight buses on their way up to Sydney to watch their team play in Saturday’s big game.

Field days survive the big wet ‘PACK your gumboots’ was definitely the catchphrase for this year’s Henty Field Days being one of the wettest underfoot for many years, with cars having to be towed into the car park so people could go to the field days.

Having said that, the field days were still a great success with good numbers across the three days and almost all major motorcycle manufactures being there.

It was a great opportunity to see a large and diverse range of off road, road and agricultural motorcycles, ATV’s and side by side vehicles all in the one place.

The wet weather, sodden race tracks and flooding has also played

havoc with the racing scene with many local events having to be cancelled or postponed or being run under very trying conditions.

Unfortunately the rising water levels have closed of access to the Lincoln causeway complex as well. Let’s hope the water subsides soon as the local club has a busy time coming up.

Recently I was advised that the

Albury Wodonga motorcycle club has been selected to hold a round of the east coast side car round up at the speed way track at the causeway complex later this year. This promises to be a very exciting event so let’s hope the waters recede quickly so the club can prepare for this event. I will keep you updated on dates and times as it draws closer.

October heralds the countdown for the two largest events in the competition calender for motorcycling in Australia with the Australian round of the Moto GP at Phillip Island and the Australian round of the Solo world speedway championship being held at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on the Saturday night of the Moto GP weekend.

These events provide the opportunity to see the world best riders in action.

This time of the year is also very exciting in the motorcycle world as the Intermot motorcycle exhibition will be held in Cologne between 5 - 9 October.

With over 1000 exhibitors, this is where many of the major manufacturers choose to release their new models to the world.

Rumours abound so I personally can’t wait to see what exciting new models we will see over the next two years.

The leaders and organizing committees of these groups are valuable community champions who reduce isolation, depression and anxiety associated with living with muscle, bone and joint conditions.

Stephanie said MOVE is a great starting point for anyone who may need better support.

WHEN 24-year-old Stephanie Powell was studying abroad in 2013 she never thought that one of those days she would wake up and her life would take a significant turn.

For Stephanie it all began one morning when a sharp pain in her wrist quickly spread throughout her entire body over four months.

Stephanie lives with a musculoskeletal condition called fibromyalgia which is associated with widespread chronic pain, tenderness and fatigue.

Almost one in three Australians are affected by a muscle, bone and joint condition which can hit people of all ages including babies and children. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I literally woke up with this condition one day,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you wake up and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got extreme pain in your limbs and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what is wrong with you and neither does the doctor, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite scary.â&#x20AC;?

While her pathology tests came back clear, Stephanie said it took about a year before she was properly diagnosed with fibromyalgia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one believed me at first because while I have this chronic pain itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not something you necessarily notice on the outside. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I experience these invisible symptoms and I felt alone.â&#x20AC;?

Feeling isolated and unable to do the things young adults her age do including sports and other social activities due to the onset of pain and exhaustion, Stephanie became a member of MOVE muscle, bone and joint health. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know anyone with

their voices heard and raise awareness of arthritis, an often painful disease that affects millions of individuals across the globe.

Quinty-sential THE 46th Uranquinty Folk Festival will be held on the NSW Labour Day weekend of 30 September - 3 October 2016.

Located on the Olympic Way, Uranquinty is only 15 kilometres south from Wagga Wagga or 130 kilometres north of Albury.

The Festival starts with a meet and greet at the Uranquinty Hotel on Friday evening from 6pm, followed by a concert including “Dingoes Breakfast” from Western Australia and “Northern Folk” from Albury/Wodonga.

“The Uranquinty Folk Festival reminds us that there are still many decent people

around,” Festival patron, Danny Spooner said.

“Families and friends can enjoy a simple experience in a beautiful spot, where you make your own entertainment with like-minded folk.

“Relaxing and rejuvenating, ’Quinty’ can revive your soul and your faith in humanity.“ Festival President Heather Hunter said this year’s event would have an extra dimension.

“This year’s festival, the 46th, will feature the Inaugral Youth showcase concert of aspiring musicians between the ages of 16-25, on Saturday afternoon with prizes to be won,” Ms Hunter said.

“There will be many other concerts, workshops, poets’ breakfast featuring musicians and performers from near and far with a women’s concert on Saturday evening with a famous aunt of now Beechworth musician, Marissa Quigley.

“Sunday evening will feature a concert on the life of Louisa Lawson, mother of Henry Lawson with Mandy Connell and friends.”

The Festival will conclude on Monday 3 October with Vegie Bowls and the famous Chorus Cup at the Hotel.

Just two more rounds of competition are left in the season with round nine on 30 October and round 10 in November.

Heavy rain cancels sports festival ORGANISERS are meeting to reschedule the 2016 Bendigo Bank Tallangatta Sports and Running Festival, which was postponed by rain earlier this month.

Organiser Mark Jones said after wide-spread flooding throughout north-east Victoria, the organisers were left with the unfortunate decision of cancelling the event that was scheduled for Sunday 18 September.

With record numbers registered for the event and a significant cash prize purse of $3000 on the line for the Tallangatta IGA Half Marathon, everyone was disappointed that the decision had to be made.

“Earlier in the week the Tallangatta Central Park was inundated due to the consistent high rainfall.

“Subsequently the 2016 Tallangatta Strong Man/Woman event had to be cancelled as the park was not stable enough under foot for the event to be run

in a safe manner,” he said.

“With heavy weights being lifted above their heads, good solid footing is an integral part of the venue.

“The decision was made early so all competitors could be notified as we now have people travelling from interstate for both the strong man/woman and running events.”

He said the strong man/ woman, being a major part of the Tallangatta Sports and running festival, put pressure on the rest of the running events.

“Finally a decision was made to cancel the entire event on the basis that the SES was no longer available for road closures and on-course support due to their high workload demands dealing with rising flood waters and securing our communities,” he said.

“In the best interest of community and competitor safety, with over 40mm of rain forecast for race day, the entire event

was cancelled.

“All registered competitors were contacted directly through the on-line registration portal and a general notice was circulated through Facebook.

“The organisers have been heartened by the positive responses from all competitors that had registered for the event given they had secured notice detailing what had occurred.”

The event organisers are now in discussions to reschedule the 2016 Bendigo Bank Tallangatta Sports and Running Festival for a suitable date later in the year.

“There are a large number of requirements to co-ordinate such as road closures and access requests for the event,” he said.

“Organisers will notify everyone at the earliest possible time when a new date is secured.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience and support and we look forward to seeing you all when we announce the new date.”

On the lookout for talent

SPORT Albury Wodonga (SAW) is looking for local talented young athletes to nominate for the 2017 Norske Skog Young Achiever of the Year Award.

The award recognises young athletes aged 16 to 21 years who are achieving in sport in the local area.

Sport Albury Wodonga continues to see a high quality of athletes achieving in their chosen sport each year, SAW president Rob McDonald said.

Since the Sport Albury

Wodonga committee reviewed the award earlier this year, it has changed its approach on showcasing nominations each month from May until early next year.

The awards night is run by a community committee under the SAW banner, with vital sponsorship from Norske Skog which offers financial assistance to the overall winner who is judged on their sporting achievements over a 12-month period.

For a second year the North East and Border Academy of Sport is providing a free term

membership as part of the finalist’s prize package.

Finalists nominated to date are Lachlan Spinelli, softball; Tanisha Devlin, boxing; Stephanie Gorman, basketball.

The award night will be held on Friday 3 March in the Commercial Club Auditorium.
