Motorist sees red

By Casey Neill A Keysborough minister is calling for just one extra second.

Lighthouse Christian Church and College senior minister and president Richard Warner is urging other Springvale and Cheltenham roads red light camera victims to join him in challenging the Keysborough “revenue-raiser”.

“I’ve got caught about five times in the past two years or so,” he said.

“There isn’t enough time to turn right.

“One more second on the right hand green light is all that is needed to make things reasonable.”

The offence attracts a $389 fine and three demerit points.

Mr Warner said the intersection was among the highest revenue earners in Victoria.

“The reason is obvious. About two to three years ago the lights were re-calibrated to make the right hand turn much faster, thus causing quite a dangerous situation,” he said.

He wrote to Civic Compliance Victoria after receiving his latest fine, but the authority said it was satisfied that the alleged offence was committed and confirmed that the infringement notice was justified.

“I was standing in line on Springvale Road facing north to turn right into Cheltenham Road,” Mr Warner said.

“It is usually a long wait for the right hand lane green light to come on.

“I was third car in the row.

“The first car was extremely slow in moving.

“As I was moving forward and turning I noticed the right hand red light came on - far too late for me to stop or do anything.

“I knew I was technically guilty... ” But Mr Warner said there was not enough time for a third vehicle to turn right when the first one or two were slow to move off.

“It’s quite ridiculous,” he said.

“I use this intersection every day.

“I drive carefully and am a law-abiding citizen.

“There is no common sense variation as to the timing of the right hand light depending on traffic flow.

“It is an example of senseless legislation penalising innocent drivers while hoons and blatant law-breakers get away scot-free.”

VicRoads Metro East signal services manager Anthony Fitts said state-of-the-art traffic signal equipment controlled the turning arrows at the intersection “and are in accordance with Austroads and VicRoads guidelines”.

“The timing of the yellow turning arrow is three seconds which is designed for a lower approach speed rather than the posted speed limit,” he said.

“Road users should be driving to the prevailing traffic and weather conditions whilst also considering their own ability in terms of reaction times.”

Victim left on train track

In Brief Man faces one count of murder

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne West man accused of pushing another man off Yarraman railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks has argued he was acting in self-defence.

Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, indicated to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 September that he’d contest the charges including assault, recklessly causing serious injury and reckless conduct.

The court heard Tangatapoto, who was with two associates, was accused of punching the man in the head several times and then deliberately pushing the man onto the railway tracks at Yarraman station about 5.53pm on 8 April.

Police alleged the accused told his victim, who lay on the tracks with a broken leg as a result of the fall: “Did you learn your lesson?”

Tangatapoto then left with his associates. A witness on another platform came to the victim’s rescue, hauling him off the tracks 60 seconds before a 6.03pm express train hurtled past.

The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital and required orthopaedic surgery to the complex fracture.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage.

Tangatapoto - who had no prior history - surrendered himself to police the next day, after the incident was shown on TV news. He told police “it was the right thing to do”.

His lawyer told the court that the victim had conceded in his statement to having “just shot up” on heroin prior to the altercation.

The swearing victim had shown off a bag full of hypodermic needles, then approached Tangatapoto holding a needle in one hand while the other hand was outstretched, the lawyer said. “(The victim) was not in a right state of mind and could have stabbed him.”

The lawyer said Tangatapoto responded to the threat by punching and pushing the victim “to get him away from him”.

“My client says ... he didn’t deliberately push him off the platform. He expected him to get up and climb off the tracks.

“There was no train in the vicinity.”

The lawyer said that the lead-up to the assault was not captured on CCTV footage or described by witnesses.

“I’d be interested to know if the informant examined the bag. If he did, maybe he could confirm there was a large number of hypodermic needles,” he said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the case may need to be heard by a higher court if Tangatapoto pleaded not guilty due to the extent of the victim’s injury.

“What I’m uncertain of is whether the (magistrates’) court has enough sentencing options ... (and that) two years’ (jail) is sufficient.”

Mr Vandersteen, however, noted the charge of intentionally causing serious injury could not be “made out on the facts”.

Tangatapoto is due to reappear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 September.

Refitted caravans help Salvos work on the streets

By Casey Neill The Salvation Army in Doveton and Dandenong is now more mobile thanks to the donation of a tech-equipped caravan.

Work for the Dole agency Envision Employment Services has been working on refitting caravans to support Salvation Army work across the area.

Dandenong corps officer Captain Stuart McGifford received the van at the Doveton Salvos site on Friday 23 September.

It’s complete with computers and a barbecue.

“It will be an ideal tool for engaging with and supporting our community and referrals to the many services in our area,” Capt McGifford said.

“The Salvos are at their best when they hit the streets and this will be a great way to do just that.

“We also see the van as great tool to build community, draw people together, celebrate and have fun.

“We look forward to working with councils and stakeholders to imagine new ways the Salvation Army can be of service.”

Capt McGifford thanked Envision Employment’s Stephen Murphy, his staff and Work for the Dole participants.

“This is a great outcome for us and the community and the skills acquired by the participants will be invaluable,” he said.

The Journal reported in August that Envision donated a refitted van to the Victorian Men’s Shed Association in Dandenong.

The refurbishment took six months and was completed with funding from the Salvation Army Employment Plus through the Federal Department of Employment.

In July, Envision donated six arcade game units to Dandenong’s Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS).

The Federal Department of Employment funded the project through SkillsPlus.

Capt McGifford recently learned he would be moving to the Salvation Army’s Alice Springs headquarters.

Armed cash robbery A thief made off with $200 after threatening two Dandenong workers with a pair of scissors.

Police said the man entered a Lonsdale Street business at 5.18am on Saturday 17 September.

“He would have had to access a laneway behind the shop and jump a locked metal gate to be able to gain access to the rear door of this business, which was open,” Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Marisa Owens said.

“He then entered and produced a pair of scissors, and held them to the throat of the victim."

She said the thief forced the 22-year-old Dandenong man into the shopfront, where he stole $185 from the cash register.

He then threatened a second victim, a 55-yearold Dandenong woman, by pointing the pair of scissors at her. She handed over $15 cash and the thief left via the rear door.

Register grab bungle A would-be thief armed with a socket wrench failed in his bid to remove a cash register from a Dandenong store.

He entered the David Street food business about 5.10pm on Friday 16 September, pulled a jacket hood over his head, approached the counter and browsed the shop.

He reached into his coat and produced the silver socket wrench to the 54-year-old Endeavour Hills woman behind the counter, demanding she open the till.

He then reached for the cash register on the counter and tried unsuccessfully to remove it.

Police said the man left the store, and another employee gave chase.

The failed thief again produced the socket wrench and made a verbal threat before walking away on James Street.

He’s described as Caucasian and aged in his forties or fifties.

A thief armed with a knife and a sense of irony stole a CCTV system from a Dandenong business.

He entered the Gladstone Road premises about 3.10pm on Thursday 15 September and selected the surveillance system.

Police said the man walked past a staff member on his way out of the store, produced a knife and continued walking to the exit.

Another staff member spoke to him and he again produced the knife, had a brief exchange with the employee and left the store.

He was seen getting into a blue or black Holden driven by a second person.

A body found in Upper Ferntree Gully was identified as 39-year-old Noble Park man Cameron Harris.

Homicide Squad detectives charged 56-yearold Vermont man Danny Volpe with one count of murder in relation to the incident, after attending an address in Vermont about 9pm on Monday 19 September.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 20 September, where he was further remanded to return to court in February.

Looking Back 100 years ago 28 September 1916 The late Sergt JP Walker Dear Mr Walker, You have doubtless heard the sad news of your son’s death, but I had promised to let you know if anything happened as he and I were great friends.

He was shot by a bullet in the right shoulder on 24 July about 4pm in the afternoon.

It penetrated his heart and he died instantaneously.

He was in charge of a section in my platoon but had been detailed to move along the line and take charge of the platoon.

He had only moved about ten yards when he was shot.

I rushed out immediately to him and pulled him into a shell hole, but he was already dead.

I can assure you that he was looked up to

5 years ago 26 September 2011 Tribute’s future not so rosy Almost $20,000 needs to be raised by Friday to ensure a tribute to Springvale’s Enterprise Migrant Hostel can be built at the site of the former institution.

More than 30,000 migrants and refugees stayed at the Springvale hostel between 1970 and 1992, when it closed.

Many of them stayed in the Greater Dandenong area.

A community project is paying tribute to the hostel and the people who lived there.

It has so far included an exhibition at the Melbourne Immigration Museum, establishing the website enterprisehostel.org and developing a new rose to be launched at the 2012 Melbourne Flower and Garden Show.

20 years ago 30 September 1996 Traders opposed to 24hr rule: MP The most vocal of Dandenong’s small traders do not want 24-hour trading, says the state Labor PM for Dandenong North, Mrs Jan Wilson.

Mrs Wilson says that early responses to a questionnaire which she circulated last week suggest Dandenong’s small traders overwhelmingly oppose the Victorian Government’s plans to introduce 24-hour trading.

War veteran lends name to road What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at Hutton Road in Keysborough, named after a war veteran and shire president.

Colonel Thomas Bruce Hutton was born in India, educated in England and in January 1855 joined the British Army.

He accompanied his regiment to the Crimea, was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol and took part in the expedition to Kinbourn.

He received a medal and clasp from the Queen for his services, and a Turkish medal.

Col Hutton then served with the 61st regiment in India and was present at the siege, assault, and capture of Delhi during the mutiny in 1857.

For these services he received a medal and clasp and was subsequently appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on the city’s capture.

NAME ton was promoted to lieutenant-colonel for his services in the field in 1872, retired from the army that same year and moved to Australia.

He’s said to have arrived in Noble Park in 1873 where he bought a property named Cumberoona, bordered by Corrigan Road, the railway line, Heatherton Road, Chandler Road and Princes Highway.

Newspapers in February 1872 reported that the Australian Government had sent word to England for an experienced military officer to take charge of the country’s volunteer force, and placed Col Hutton in temporary command.

The Argus in April 1879 reported that Col Hutton had resigned from the position on the grounds that he was “dissatisfied with the manner in which the Victorian volunteer force is administered”.

The Journal’s previous incarnation, the South Bourke and Mornington Journal, in October 1892 reported that Dandenong Council president Jas Greaves made a presentation to his predecessor, Col Hutton. Col Hutton had been a councillor for 16 years, during 12 of which he “creditably filled the presidential chair”.

“It showed that both the ratepayers and the council thought very highly of him,” the report said. “He was also at present president of the Dandenong Agricultural Society and, in fact took a leading part in all local affairs.”

The Journal reported at the time that in response, Col Hutton said he’d always tried to act conscientiously and impartially and did not think he had a single enemy in the district.

“He had travelled a great deal and had served in the Imperial Army,” the Journal said.

“And he had also had the honour of being presented to Her Majesty the Queen, but he had never spent such a peaceful and happy time as he had passed since his residence in Dandenong.”

The Berwick Shire News and Pakenham and Cranbourne Gazette reported on 18 November 1914 that city coroner Dr Cole “held an inquiry at the morgue on Saturday last touching the death of Colonel Thomas Bruce Hutton, who met his death at Dandenong on the 10th of last month”.

He was aged 80.

“Evidence was given that the deceased was subject to fits, and it was believed that he had accidentally overturned a lamp, thereby setting his room on fire,” the paper reported. “The medical evidence showed that death had resulted from suffocation by smoke, the burns on the body having occurred subsequently. A verdict of accidental death from suffocation was recorded.”

Election draws wide field

Voters have to turn up to poll

By Casey Neill Forty-three hopefuls have thrown their hats into the ring to represent Greater Dandenong ahead of the Saturday 22 October local government elections.

Nominations closed at noon on Tuesday 20 September.

Ten of the 11 serving councillors have re-nominated across the municipality’s four wards, as have several previous candidates and councillors.

Cr John Kelly is stepping aside, 25 years after he was first elected.

“I think it’s probably someone else’s turn now,” he said.

“I feel comfortable with it. It’s time to move on and do something else.

“I’ve met some absolutely wonderful people.

“I’ve been privileged to represent the people of Dandenong.”

Cr Kelly said he had a couple of things in the pipeline regarding how he’d spend his free time.

“I’ll let the dust settle and see what happens,” he said.

He said working on the Dandenong Market redevelopment and a campaign to stop drug injecting rooms in the city were among his biggest achievements.

“We’ve got a great council,” he said.

His ward, Silverleaf, will be the most hotly contested with 13 candidates vying for two seats.

At the 2012 election, incumbent Maria Sampey received 23.36 per cent of the vote.

Zaynoun Melhem, who received 14.75 per cent, has again put up his hand.

Other candidates include Rhonda Tannous, who runs Why Not? Wooden Bakery at Dandenong Market; former social worker Saied Rezawi; repeat nominee and environment campaigner Geraldine Gonsalvez; Rajab Jafari; Justice of the Peace and former City of Casey councillor Sam Afra; former Greater Dandenong councillor Sue Walton; Luz Escobar Munoz; Naile Cicekdag; Greater Dandenong Disability Advisory Committee member Pradeep Hewavitharana; Suresh Shanmugam; and Alfred

Greater Dandenong Council is sticking with attendance voting for the Saturday 22 October election.

But voters can apply for a postal vote until Thursday 20 October, or attend the early voting centre.

The municipality’s early voting centre is at the Dandenong Civic Centre, 225 Lonsdale Street, and will be open 9am to 5pm weekdays from 21 September to 19 October, 9am to 8pm on Thursday 20 October and 9am to 6pm on Friday 21 October.

In-person voting on election day will be open from 8am to 6pm, and is compulsory for anyone who pays rates on a property in the city and is on the electoral roll.

Silverleaf takes in Noble Park North and Dandenong North, and has voting centres at Carwatha College, Oakwood School, and the Rosewood Downs, Silverton and Wooranna Park primary schools.

Lightwood Ward includes Springvale and Springvale South and its voting centres are the Athol Road Primary School west campus, Edinburgh Road Hall, the Heatherhill and Keysborough primary schools, Keysborough College’s banksia campus, Spring Parks Primary’s valley campus, the Springvale Customer Service Centre, Springvale Rise Primary’s heights campus, and Whitworth Avenue Pre-School.

Red Gum Ward includes Dandenong, Dandenong South and Bangholme.

Voting centres include Dandenong High School, Dandenong North Senior Citizens Centre, and the Dandenong, Dandenong South and Dandenong West primary schools.

Paperbark Ward covers Noble Park and Keysborough, and voting centres include the Chandler Park, Harrisfield, Noble Park, Resurrection, Wallarano and Yarraman Oaks primary schools.

Voting is compulsory and enrolled voters will be fined if they do not participate in the poll, including property owners and tenants.

Seven candidates will contest the three-seat Lightwood Ward.

Sean O’Reilly collected 28.54 per cent of the vote at the last election, Youhorn Chea 27.57 per cent and Loi Truong 18.92 per cent.

Dang Quach received 11.2 per cent of the vote last time around and will stand again.

New to the seat are Noble Park resident Gagandeep Singh; Nathan Niven, who has union and ALP ties; and Linda Pompeia.

Roz Blades won 28.08 per cent of the Paperbark Ward at the 2012 polls, followed by Peter Brown on 19.21 per cent and current Mayor Heang Tak with 17.85 per cent.

Three unsuccessful candidates from that contest are running again - Brad Woodford (2.62 per cent), Huy Tran (3.64 per cent) and Minh Van Tran (6.82 per cent).

The other Paperbark candidates include Albanian Islamic Centre member Alam Bhuiyan; Sophie Tan; Ramy El-Sukkari; Sajjad Shamsi; Emine Gok; and real estate agent Tim Dark.

In Red Gum Ward there are three vacancies and 11 candidates.

At the last election, Jim Memeti received 22.73 per cent of the vote, followed by Matthew Kirwan with 13.75 per cent and Angela Long with 11.47 per cent.

Murugan Nagarajan won 1.12 per cent of the vote as a 2012 candidate and has nominated again.

Another repeat candidate is disability advocate and former councillor Sharon King Harris.

A second Gagandeep Singh is vying for Red Gum Ward alongside Hayatullah Rahimi, 35, who received the council’s Leadership Award on Australia Day for his advocacy on refugee and asylum seeker issues, and support for the Hazara community.

The other Red Gum candidates include Dandenong North Primary School council member Minwen Wu; David Daniel Ball; Lions Club member Lidia Paul; and Van Lanh Dang.

“Every bit of the dollar goes back into the community.

“The problem is much greater than most people realise.”

Mr Rechichi said the group serviced 725 families and individuals last financial year, almost 60 per cent from Noble Park and 15 per cent from Springvale.

The community has rallied around the Dandenong and Springvale benevolent societies, helping them to help Greater Dandenong’s most vulnerable.

City of Greater Dandenong Living Treasure and Medal of the Order of Australia recipient Peter Jabbour donated $500 to each group on Wednesday 21 September.

Dandenong and District Benevolent Society manager Margaret Ladner said the generous offer was one of many.

On 20 July this year the Journal reported her call for blankets to warm those who were shivering through winter.

The community responded with hundreds of donations.

“I even got a parcel from Brisbane with new blankets,” Ms Ladner said.

“It was unbelievable.

“I should hope that nobody in Dandenong is going cold.”

She said Mr Jabbour’s assistance “means more food for somebody”.

“I’m just listening to the news all the time and they’re saying they’re cutting the welfare,” she said.

“The people coming in, I don’t know how they manage these big rents.”

The Lions Club of Dandenong followed Mr Jabbour’s visit with a food hamper delivery.

Lion Alan Pinder read about the society in the Journal and said it prompted the club to do its bit to support Ms Ladner and her team.

“We used to help many years ago,” he said.

“Now we want to start again. From this month, every three months we want to give them lots of groceries donated by our members - in September, December, March, June.

“We’re bringing two boxes of toys in as well.

“We want to help Margaret help the community.”

For the first time in decades the two benevolent societies last year missed out on a Federal Government Department of Social Services (DSS) emergency funding grant, leaving their budgets tens of thousands of dollars short.

Counting up the homeless cost

Gifts bring smiles across the miles

By Casey Neill Dandenong Letters Centre spread smiles to street kids in Africa through 40 kilograms of stickers, pens and 3D glasses.

In March, the Journal reported that staff collected more than US$1000 through their Christmas raffle to buy a leg for Sedrick, then aged 8.

Logistics team member Ravinder Bhal’s daughter Saira, 25, spent a month volunteering in Kigali, Rwanda, through her university and met Sedrick at non-profit education and rehabilitation centre Les Enfants de Dieu (EDD).

The Dandenong Letters Centre (DLC) team has now sent about 40 kilograms of stationery to the 120 boys who call EDD home.

Sedrick is no longer one of them.

“He’s actually integrated back into society and back into the normal system,” Ms Bhal said.

“We sent them a couple of hundred pens for writing, a few different writing sets and activity sets, stickers - we sent them probably 150 sheets

of stickers - and some Australia Post recycling bags, because in Kigali you can’t use plastic bags.

“My daughter went back to volunteer at the centre for a month.

“She sent back photos of the boys with the stuff that we’d sent.

“Some put the stickers on their faces.

“One of the activity sets actually had 3D glasses.

“Apparently it had to be put in the library because everyone was fighting over them!”

Ms Bhal said the hall also included some draw by numbers activity sets.

“They kept them in the library for the boys so they could have special activities,” she said.

She said the DLC team would continue to raise funds for EDD, and thanked manager Mick Doyle and fund-raising co-ordinator Donna Slivarich for supporting the cause.

Ms Bhal also thanked Dandenong Plaza post office manager Darren Bennett and Australia Post retail department’s Con Fitos and Laura Gorton.

Theft and burglary man given bail

By Casey Neill A Dandenong man facing 65 theft and burglary charges is out on bail.

Greater Dandenong CIU members executed two search warrants on Tuesday 13 September, in Cambridge Close, Berwick, and Glynda Street, Dandenong.

The searches followed a three-month investigation into burglaries and thefts on business premises throughout the south-east, targeting

cash and electrical goods.

Police arrested a 25-year-old Dandenong man and charged him with 65 offences relating to burglary and theft.

He was presented directly to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court where the magistrate released him on bail to reappear on Thursday 6 October.

Police expect to lay further charges.

They also arrested and interviewed a 28-yearold Dandenong man and released him pending summons.

Ms Yeomans said that intervening early to help young people stay in school, engage in training or find work, set them up for a better future and reduced their risk of homelessness.

The State and Federal governments commit $57.5 million a year to Victorian homelessness services through the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH).

But this agreement is due to expire in June next year, with no replacement funding in sight.

Ms Yeomans urged the governments to ensure vulnerable people had the support they needed so homelessness was reduced rather than increased.

“Not only does it cause trauma for the individuals and families impacted, but it is also a major drain on governments’ budgets,” she said.

“If we can intervene early to stop people becoming homeless in the first place, governments save money on health, justice and crisis services and vulnerable people are not left without a home.”

More than 1600 people and counting are homeless in Dandenong.

Mission Australia CEO Catherine Yeomans visited the charity’s Dandenong office on Tuesday 13 September to call for help to halve homelessness by 2025.

She also called for funding through the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH) to continue past its current expiry date of next June.

The last census recorded 22,727 homeless men, women and children going without a safe, permanent place to call home every night in Victoria, including 1635 in Dandenong.

“We know homelessness is a big issue here in Victoria and in Dandenong and we expect since the most recent Census, that these numbers are on the rise,” Ms Yeomans said.

“There are no silver bullets but we know what works.

“We need to prevent people in high-risk groups from becoming homeless, fund evidencebased programs for people who are already homeless and ensure enough homes for people on low incomes.”

She said the Dandenong Mission Australia office ran intervention services including Transition To Work, the Navigator program and Communities for Children.

Residents’ safety fear over new bus routes

By Casey Neill The new Keysborough South bus route has some residents scared for their safety.

Dhani, who did not want her surname published, lives just off Keylana Drive and is worried about buses on the 709 route using the road between Lake View Boulevard and Chapel Road.

“It’s a very narrow road, even for two cars to pass through,” she said.

“There are three pretty curvy turns as well.

“The one near my house almost goes at 90 degrees.”

Dhani said that since the route started on Sunday 28 August, neighbours had reported getting stuck behind buses during peak hour and impa-

tient drivers entering the wrong side of the road to pass them.

“Speeding’s always been an issue in Keylana,” she said.

“People come down to avoid Cheltenham Road traffic.”

Dhani said that on the other end of the spectrum, she’d seen some bus drivers travelling too fast along Keylana.

“I almost got taken out by a bus travelling in the opposite direction and I had to brake,” she said.

She suggested the route could use Lake View Boulevard to bypass Keylana’s most narrow section.

“I’m on the side closer to Chapel Road, that’s where the curves mainly are,” she said.

“The other side, there are two roundabouts but they’re not as narrow and they’re not as curvy.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said changing the route to avoid Keylana could also enable the bus to serve the new shopping centre, proposed school and community hub.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) spokesman John Lindsay said the new 709 bus route was chosen following extensive consultation with the local community, the council and the operator.

“Keylana Drive was identified as the most logical road for a route that could be accessed by the most people, while maintaining the most direct alignment as possible,” he said.

Court credit for attacker who tended to stab victim

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man gained some credits from a magistrate for not fleeing but giving first-aid to a person he stabbed during an afternoon argument at a Dandenong boarding house.

Shalendra Singh had been shut out of the victim’s room twice as Singh sought the return of an item on 19 June, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

Singh returned with a silver hunting knife, picked the room’s lock and got in a scuffle with the victim in the hallway.

Singh, who pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury and aggravated burglary, claimed he accidentally stabbed the victim’s elbow during the fight.

He then tried to stem the copious bleeding from the victim’s wound. The victim was treated by paramedics and underwent surgery at Dandenong Hospital.

Singh was found at the scene by police. He

carried a small amount of ice and cannabis, and a second knife down the back of his pants.

He told police he had planned to intimidate the victim to return his property, and stabbed the victim in an attempt to push the victim away from him.

Singh’s lawyer told the court there was a wide range of things Singh could have done after the stabbing.

The accused could have fled, knowing that police and paramedics were on their way, the lawyer said.

Singh was using up to two grams of cannabis a week, and just started taking ice prior to the stabbing, the court was told.

“He’s found (remand) custody extremely difficult. He’s much smaller than the inmates and he’s been physically assaulted on a number of occasions.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was significant that Singh rendered assistance to his victim but noted it was “unbelievably stupid and danger-

ous” to bring a knife in the first place.

“Many people don’t stop but go on to commit something very serious.”

Singh would have faced a “double-figures” jail term had the victim been seriously injured or killed, Mr Vandersteen said.

He noted Singh’s offending was different to when jailed by the County Court for being an after-the-fact accessory to murder in 2008.

The magistrate noted in that case Singh had been threatened with assault by his associates in the earlier case, and that drug use had also played a role.

Any repeat violent offending was likely to attract a significant jail term, he said.

Singh was sentenced to 93 days jail - which had already been served in remand.

He was also placed on a 12-month supervised corrections order with drug testing and treatment as well as judicial monitoring.

In Brief Pedestrian seriously injured A 31-year-old Springvale South pedestrian was injured after colliding with a car in Springvale South.

Police said that a Mazda hatchback being driven by a 50-year-old Springvale South woman was travelling west on Paterson Road when it collided with the man just east of Springvale Road about 4.30am on Thursday 22 September.

He sustained significant injuries and was taken to hospital.

The Mazda driver stopped at the scene and assisted police with their inquiries.

Detectives are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Paterson Road was closed for some time while Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives processed the scene.

No injuries in train crash A car collided with a train in Noble Park on Saturday 17 September.

Police believe a white Nissan Dualis turned left from Railway Parade and was travelling south on Chandler Road about 7.35am.

They’ve been told that the car went under the boom gates as they were closing and collided with an outbound train.

The 33-year-old Cranbourne West man behind the wheel was not injured in the incident, and neither were any train passengers.

Investigations into the collision are ongoing.

Acting Sergeant Kylie Baulch from Springvale police station said the incident was a timely reminder.

“We just want to remind people they shouldn’t try to cross when gates or booms are operating or when red lights are flashing,” she said.

“Don’t take the risk and try to beat the train at a level crossing as this can too often end in tragedy.”

Fire unearths cannabis cultivation A fire in a Noble Park house uncovered a hydroponic cannabis set-up.

Divisional Response Unit Senior Constable Blake Gilbert said the CFA received reports that a rear bedroom was on fire in a Verbena Crescent home about 4.30pm on Monday 19 September.

“Upon extinguishing that, the CFA members observed what they believed were cannabis plants growing in pots,” he said.

Police attended and confirmed that the six plants in question were cannabis, seized them and

Sen Const Gilbert said the occupant then returned home unaware of the fire, caused by an electrical overheating problem.

“It was a crime scene that he’s walked into,” he said.

Police charged the 41-year-old with cultivating cannabis. He was bailed to reappear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 2 November.

More than 25,000 people dined, danced and delighted in Chinese culture at this year’s Full Moon Festival at Dandenong Market.

The Sunday 18 September event featured song and dance performances, displays, lantern-making, a moon cake eating competition, traditional street food and more.

Dandenong health professionals are teaming up with Afghan community leaders to tackle health issues.

Enliven Victoria, in Robinson Street, received $40,000 from the State Government’s Capacity Building and Participation (CBP) Program.

It will use the cash to implement the Afghan Community Strengthening to Improve Health and Well-being project.

Enliven refugee health program manager Dr I-Hao Cheng said the funding was for two years.

“Without it we would only be able to do a small piece of work, I think,” he said.

“It’s helped us to leverage additional funds.

“Importantly, we’re going to apply a sustainability lens over the entire two years so that hopefully by the end of two years we’ll have a sustainable model that’s delivered beyond that.”

Dr Cheng said the project would tackle access to health services, mental health issues and child health.

“The Afghan community doesn’t necessarily understand the best way of accessing appropriate health services for their needs,” he said.

“There’s a need to work with them, so they understand how to do that.”

He said many former refugees or asylum seekers suffered mental health issues relating to their

experiences, including depression and anxiety.

In relation to child health, Dr Cheng said the project would focus on helping Afghan people to understand immunisations and the importance of child development.

“We’re working with a number of Afghan community leaders and community volunteers, and together we’re going to refine a curriculum and health-related messages and together deliver that to the Afghan community in Afghan community languages,” he said.

“I want to thank the Afghan community and a large number of stakeholder organisations for supporting this work, and of course the Victorian Multicultural Commission.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said seven groups were successful in their bids for funding grants under the new CBP Program.

She said it provided grants ranging from $5000 to $230,000 for between one to four years, and that 250 successful applications from across the state would share $16 million.

“These grants will support our local projects and groups who work so hard to support our proudly multicultural community,” Ms Williams said.

“It will help us create a more inclusive and integrated community and build relationships between local government, service providers and the wider community.”

Residents fume at slow internet

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong Council is seeking answers on slow internet service for frustrated residents in Keysborough South and Dandenong South.

At the Monday 12 September Greater Dandenong Council meeting, Councillor Matthew Kirwan moved a notice of motion regarding internet and mobile telecommunications problems.

Councillors agreed to write to the Federal Government, relevant telecommunication authorities and relevant telecommunication providers asking for action on the issues of internet choice and performance and mobile reception.

Keysborough South’s Emmanuel Vella said he’d spoken to Telstra about his internet issues on many occasions over the past 18 months.

“What happens in the Keysborough South area is we’re locked in with a Telstra Velocity smart community hub,” he said.

“With that there is no other provider that you can go with.

“You can’t get cable, you can’t get ADSL because it’s all fibre.

“The only other thing you can get is satellite and satellite is really expensive.”

Mr Vella said he was paying for 100 megabit speeds but was only able to access 25 megabits “on the best day”. He said the exchange was too congested.

“The estate’s not even finished yet. Can you imagine in another six months’ time how bad it’s going to be?” he said.

He said Telstra has been unable to tell him when the issue will be fixed.

“They offered me a credit. I told them I wasn’t after just cash, I was after a resolution,” he said.

“I want the service that I’m paying for.

“I want to know when we’re getting the service happening, and I can’t get an answer.”

Cr Kirwan said residents in the Meridian Estate in Dandenong South and the new estates in Keysborough were frequently reporting problems.

He that in the case of the new estates of Keysborough, “this at least partly due to Telstra not upgrading the local exchange to cater for population growth”.

“Many operate businesses from home which are impacted by this,” he said.

“In terms of mobile reception, since the implementation of the sound barriers on the Dandenong Bypass, residents in the new estates of Keysborough are frequently reporting they have little to no mobile coverage inside their homes.

“One provider has confirmed that a tower upgrade at Parkmore is not due for at least 18 months.”

A Telstra spokesman said he had no comment on the issue.

Learning how to keep training local Keysborough Learning Centre’s Marj Sjostrom has won a state prize.

She took home the Learn Local Award for outstanding practitioner at a ceremony on Thursday 8 September. Ms Sjostrom was among five winners who were recognised on the night.

Dandenong Neighbourhood House’s Naryphol Thach was a finalist for the Pre-Accredited Learner Excellence award.

The awards night recognised the contribution Victoria’s more than 300 Learn Locals make to training.

“These are great stories of training success, of people lifting themselves up through training, of commitment by teachers and of wonderful programs that transform lives,” Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said.

“All Victorians, no matter their background, should be able to access training."

About 70 people donned their best eye patches, peg legs and parrots for a Keysborough event with ‘arr’.

The Somerfield estate’s one-acre pirate playground hosted its third annual Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration on Sunday 18 September.

A Somerfield spokeswoman said bad weather kept numbers down, but “they had lots of fun despite the threat of rain”.

“We were lucky it was a bit cold but dry!”

Kids dressed up to pay tribute to the world’s Peg Legs, Blackbeards and Long John Silvers.

The day featured a treasure hunt, competitions, bouncy castle, pirate, balloon-making, face painting and more.

Andrea Christoforou received a special award at the Gateway Industries AGM - a certificate for putting up with her husband.

She’d notched up 36 years of marriage to Gateway board member Conn Christoforou the previous day, Tuesday 20 September.

Cheers and laughs erupted from the Dandenong Club function room when Gateway CEO Alan Warwick presented the award.

The Journal can reveal a serious security breach occurred at a local police station last Thursday - a Star journalist left his satchel behind following a behind-the-scenes tour.

The red-faced reporter spent a humbling 20 minutes at the front counter, waiting his turn for an officer to come to his aid.

He successfully retrieved the bag and the many notepads scrawled with stories within.

A Greater Dandenong dance for seniors could be making a comeback.

At the Monday 12 September council meeting, councillor Maria Sampey asked for the International Multicultural Senior Citizens’ Dance to return.

“It was a much loved function supported by council over many years,” she said.

“Older residents have been telling me it was a highlight of their year.

Cr Sampey successfully asked that costing options to re-establish the dance next year be prepared for consideration in the 2016-17 mid-year budget.

Cr Sean O’Reilly said a recent report identified dancing as one of the best exercises for elderly people.

The 12th annual Doveton Show had around 8000 families zipping around Myuna Farm on Sunday 18 September from stall to ride - but the numbers were still down on last year.

Show committee member, Joanne Hann, admitted it would be a hard task to beat the epic walk-in rate of 27,000 last year.

“Numbers were certainly down on 2015, but families missed out because there was only one short burst of rain,” she said.

“We encourage everyone to give $2 per person at the gates because that’s the money we use to put on next year’s show,” Ms Hann said.

“But those that did come, had smiles on their faces and our new online feedback forms have all been really positive.”

But in true farm yard style, it was the animals that stole the show. Two lambs were born on the morning of the show and placed in the nursery, for everyone to get a glimpse at.

By Casey Neill Dandenong North primary students are challenging their teachers with complex questions and turning to NASA for answers.

“We did have a little boy who was studying Einstein’s general theory of relativity,” Wooranna Park principal Ray Trotter said.

“The mentors for that project were all from NASA.” He explained that students took on ‘enigma missions’ in which they explored one of life’s mysteries.

“They can range anywhere from three months to one year to two years,” he said.

“They tend to study things that are outside the normal curriculum.”

They present their findings to their peers and “go through a pretty rigorous process of questioning”.

Assistant principal Jennie Vine said they’d even stood up to questioning from physicists.

“They realised these kids were actually serious,” she said.

“They actually understood these complex concepts.”

She said the projects helped students to establish career pathway options from a young age and taught them lifelong research and analytical skills.

Mr Trotter said the school had the youngest CISCO class in the world, with students from Grades 3 to 6 completing the Certificate III course in networking.

Ms Vine said Grade 6 student Logan Nicholson was completing a Year 10 physics course online.

“He’s part of an observatory on a Friday night,” she said.

“He studies the solar system and brings in all his findings.”

Mr Trotter said: “I’ve got no idea what he’s talking about, to be honest.”

Logan, 12, said he’d been interested in space since he was young and had progressed to photographing stars.

“I want to be an aerospace engineer, so a person that makes rocket ships and planes,” he said.

He’s involved with a program known as the Genesis Centre, where students visit the Springvale Harvey Norman store each Wednesday to experience new technology, from robotics to 3D printing and holoportation.

1. What is something people don’t know about you?

I like to tap dance.

2. What was your most memorable moment?

Absconding from my school, Dandenong High, at lunchtime on 20 July 1969 with my friend, Lesley. We ran home to watch Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon on our black and white television. Afterwards, my dad drove us back to school only to find staff and students looking at the same thing on a television in the school assembly hall.

Roast lamb and vegetables with chocolate mousse for dessert.

4. What event, past, present or future event would you like to witness?

Recently, while driving on a road in Tasmania I saw a sign that should have read ‘Form One Lane’. It had been changed to ‘Form One Planet’. I’d like to live long enough to witness a world without wars where we could all live together in peace and harmony.

5. What is your favourite television show?

Any comedy, particularly British comedy.

My favourite show at the moment is Yes Minister re-runs on Foxtel.

6. What is your favourite book?

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.

A young Mitch re-engages with his old professor of philosophy, Morrie Sshwartz who is dying of ALS. It is through his discussions with Morrie on various topics of life and death each Tuesday that Mitch understands the true meaning of life.

7. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

Well that would depend on whether I am cooking it as well! If I am doing the cooking I’d invite my three sons and their partners as they are used to my poor cooking skills. But if I was only hosting and someone else was doing the cooking, I would invite Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Gough Whitlam, Dave Allen, Adele and Rohan Atkinson.

8. What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Getting my Herald Swim Certificate doing the dog-paddle in Year 10 at the Noble Park Baths. My class mates were still in primary school.

9. What era would you like to live in?

I like the fashion of the 1920s but I strongly believe that all men and women were created equal so I’d have to say that I am glad that I live in this century.

10. What was your first or best concert?

My first concert was Gary Glitter at Festival Hall in 1973 but probably the less said about that concert, the better.

The best concert I have ever attended was the Canadian poet, songwriter and singer Leonard Cohen. His performance was uplifting and profound.

Breaking barriers A men’s group is just one way that Valley Village Mews is making its residents feel at home.

“We were finding that when they came to functions, the guys on their own didn’t mix with the ones with partners,” the retirement village’s manager Cynthia Mack said.

“We started up this men’s group once a month.

“They cook a sausage sizzle and have a chat. At least 20 of them come, they really enjoy it.”

A residents committee of about 20 members organises excursions and events.

“Recently they went down to Gippsland for the day,” Ms Mack said.

“Friday night they had a chicken and chips night.”

Residents can regularly take part in exercise, carpet bowls, line dancing, adult colouring classes and even bocce on a court that the village installed last year.

Ms Mack said there were also “magnificent

parklands” on-site to explore.

A podiatrist visits every six weeks and Robyn from the office runs craft sessions.

“She’s an artist, so she and her mother run the craft group,” Ms Mack said.

“Sylvia Catic, our hairdresser, she’s been here longer than me.

“She’s here two days a week and she’s fantastic with our residents.”

Workers covered Springvale personal injury lawyer Naomi Riggs said that every employee is entitled to the protection of a WorkCover claim.

This includes ordinary employees, contractors, couriers and even volunteers.

She warns that it is not uncommon for an employer to try and dissuade an employee from making a WorkCover claim.

“The making of a WorkCover claim increases the insurance premiums paid by the employer to their WorkCover insurer.

“WorkCover exists for the benefit of employees.

“If an employee is injured in the course of their employment, it is very difficult for an employer to lawfully deny a WorkCover claim.

“It is also often thought that you cannot make a WorkCover claim if your employment has been terminated and this is incorrect,” she said.

Ms Riggs, a Senior Associate at Adviceline Injury Lawyers, said that according to law, an employer cannot terminate an employee’s employment because of the making of a WorkCover claim.

“If an employer terminates a worker’s employment because of the making of a WorkCover claim, there are various legal avenues which can be pursued.

“In fact, a separate claim can be made for payment of compensation for the fact of employment termination,” she said.

“The only legal basis on which an employer can terminate an employee’s employment when on WorkCover is when after 12 months of having been injured, the employer no longer has any suitable duties for the employee.”

Tributes flow for artist

By Casey Neill Life-long Noble Park resident and artist Fred Woodman has died, aged 88.

The Noble Park Community Art Show founding member passed away on Friday 16 September.

His watercolour exhibition Local Heathland Flora that features 95 plant portraits has been on exhibition throughout the city over the years.

The portraits are of plants that still exist in the Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve and Coomoora Woodland and some took three years to complete.

In an online tribute, the Noble Park Community Art Show committee and Noble Park Community Centre management committee said Fred

was “a fixture within the local community, not just the art community” and would be deeply missed.

“His genuine interest and passion for art and other artists could get anyone excited about creating their own masterpiece.”

Community centre manager Brian Woodman said the art show, to be held from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October this year, would feature a tribute to Fred.

“There will be not only a tribute this year, but there’ll be an ongoing tribute to Fred,” he said.

“At the art show we’ll have a number of his works displayed in a special display board, which will honour his work with us but also in the art field and the wider community.

“The community centre will be taking one of his pieces of work and it will be placed on recognition at the centre as an ongoing piece of work.

“He was there from the very beginning.”

In 2013, Fred’s art show submission was an acrylic rendition of the amorphophallus titanum flower, commonly known as the corpse flower.

Fred received the Foundation Award at the 2013 Noble Park Community Awards, which recognised the suburb’s top contributors.

When Fred was told he was the fifth person to be awarded this recognition, he reportedly replied that he would from then be known as Frederick the Fifth.

Rail bridge announced

By Casey Neill A rail bridge will carry trains over Abbotts Road from 2019.

On Thursday 23 September Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the design choice and that construction to remove the level crossing would start next year.

“This is a fantastic outcome for the local community and I look forward to work starting next year on the removal of this deadly, congested crossing,” she said.

She said the solution followed extensive consultation on a range of options with local business owners and operators, commuters and landowners.

Ms Williams said local industry indicated a clear preference for a rail bridge over Abbotts Road during the consultation.

“We’ve listened closely to local feedback and found a solution that keep Abbotts Road open and connected to the industrial precinct,” she said.

She said that removing the crossing would reduce congestion and make the area safer.

More than 23,000 vehicles use the intersection every day.

A train derailed after hitting a truck at the intersection in 2012, resulting in one death and several serious injuries.

The incident followed another death at the intersection five years earlier.

The State Government announced last November that the crossing would be gone by 2019.

Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum welcomed the news, which followed years of campaigning from the group.

He said it would continue to advocate for a road link over the Cranbourne rail line connecting Remington Drive to Pound Road.

But in February this year, the Journal reported

Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) did not initially put forward any other plans.

But Ms Williams said there were always other options on the table, and two weeks later the LXRA released four additional prospective projects for public consultation.

On 1 April she asked LXRA to prioritise investigations into ‘the Remington Drive option’.

“If it doesn’t stack up, it’s better they take it off the table sooner rather than later so businesses have certainty and so we clear the air for feedback on the other four options,” she said.

On 23 May Ms Williams announced that the option had been taken off the table.

Work is underway to remove the level crossings at Corrigan, Heatherton and Chandler roads in Noble Park.

The South Gippsland Highway crossing is also on the list of 50 to be removed by 2022.

Disability enterprise offers gateway to opportunities

By Casey Neill Gateway Industries’ workers couldn’t speak more highly of the disability enterprise.

“Everyone is treated with love and respect,” Krystal Bradshaw told the Gateway AGM at Dandenong Club on Wednesday 21 September.

The 30-year-old Berwick resident has worked at Gateway for two and a half years.

“I have made new friends and met my partner Mark there, too,” she said.

She said her supervisor listened to her needs and helped everyone come out of their shells.

Ms Bradshaw spent some time working in a “mainstream job”.

“I felt uncomfortable and I struggled in the maths,” she said.

She said her co-workers gave her sideways glances.

“It made me feel intimidated and uncomfortable,” she said.

Ms Bradshaw said she was bullied at school and in other workplaces, but that wasn’t the case at Gateway.

The registered charity offers employment, training and support for adults with disabilities in Greater Dandenong and Casey, and started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative.

The Australian Disability Enterprise, through 55 workers, offers processing and packaging, woodwork, litter pick-up, garden maintenance, and more.

Gateway Industries has provided street furniture cleaning and litter pick-up services to Greater Dandenong Council for 25 years, and garden maintenance to Greenways Retirement Village in Seaford for 15 years.

CEO Alan Warwick said he hadn’t been well during the past 18 months and Gateway founding CEO Margaret Cleary had been a huge help.

He said a break-in and robbery in April left staff and employees stressed and physically shaken but they had rallied to support each other and bounced back.

President Russell Smith also commented on the break-in.

“Everyone just put their shoulder to the wheel,” he said.

“We had insurance, of course, but insurance doesn’t cover everything.”

In Brief Footy Friday hurting business The Grand Final Friday public holiday will hurt the competitiveness of south-east manufacturers, a peak body says.

Friday 30 September will be the second time the annual holiday takes place.

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said that given recent State Government decisions “this can only have a greater impact to the manufacturer in the south-east”.

“Maximising productivity is essential to all of these businesses and it’s essential to maintaining the manufacturing base in Victoria,” he said.

“Therefore, the effects of this public holiday, regardless of how insignificant it may seem to others, has a profound impact on many of these businesses and impedes on their ability to be competitive.”

South Eastern Metropolitan Region Liberal MP Inga Peulich has a petition calling on the State Government to reverse the public holiday.

She said the holiday imposed a major new cost that would cause many businesses to close their doors for the day and cost employees shifts.

Ms Peulich said that the State Government last year found that the holiday would cost Victoria as much as $898 million per year.

“I ask the people of Greater Dandenong to join me in again asking Daniel Andrews to listen to our small business owners and their employees and to reverse this job-destroying decision,” she said.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said feedback from the electorate had been overwhelmingly positive, with people using Grand Final Friday to spend time with friends and family and visit local business.

“Businesses have been trading with public holiday and weekend arrangements in place for decades and whether businesses open or close is entirely a matter for them,” she said.

High flier for Bombardier Dandenong-based Bombardier Transportation Australia has a new managing director.

Andrew Dudgeon takes the reins from Rene Lalande who had been with BTA for 11 years and led the business for almost three years.

Mr Dudgeon joined Bombardier in July from an international consultancy that specialises in leadership, strategy and business culture.

Prior to that he held several CEO roles globally and in Australia, and held a number of senior command appointments within the Australian Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier.

During his military career he held key appointments within the Defence Materiel Organisation, saw international operational service and flew fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for exceptional service to Australian Defence Force Aviation.

A Bombardier spokeswoman said Mr Dudgeon had already hit the ground running and looked forward to leading the Bombardier team across Australia, with a strong focus on securing additional orders for Bombardier in Victoria and New South Wales.

Mr Lalande is now the new CEO of Transdev’s Australasian operations.

Transdev is the largest multi-modal public transport service operator across Australia and New Zealand.

It covers bus, light rail, heavy rail, ferries and coach services.

Advice rolls into town

Krystal Bradshaw shared her Gateway employment story.

Mr Smith attended a National Disability Services (NDS) conference in Canberra, which largely focused on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and its effect on service providers.

“It was characterised by one of the speakers as a bit like an aeroplane flying in the air and someone’s trying to work out whether the wings are on properly,” he said.

“For many people with a disability, funding from the NDIS scheme will be allocated on a personal basis, in that they will be able to choose what support services they require and what facility will best suit their needs, rather than the fund-

ing going direct to a service or facility.

“This will also be the case for people at Gateway in the future.”

Mr Smith said Gateway had a very good year financially.

“The supervisors have engaged in further professional development during the year and the employees have continued their education with the new Skills Program,” he said.

Treasurer Geoff Johnson said Gateway had turned a loss last year into a profit this year, and that the current financial year was progressing in line with the budget.

A small bus filled with big ideas will roll into Dandenong next month to support small businesses.

The Small Business Bus will park at Palm Plaza in Walker Street from 10am to 4pm on Monday 17 October.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said it would offer small business operators free mentoring, support and government business services.

Mentors have skills in marketing, finance, human resources and sales in small business.

“The Small Business Bus is a great service for local businesses to have access to expert face-to-face advice anywhere in Victoria,” Ms Williams said.

Lifetime with the show

By Casey Neill Sue Glenn has fond childhood memories of attending the Dandy Show with her mum.

She never imagined she’d one day be organising the event as the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society president.

She took on the role in March following years of involvement with the two-day show, to be held on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November this year.

“I was coming in and helping out for quite a number of years on the scout display,” Ms Glenn said.

“Then I stated helping out in the exhibition building.

Her husband became a show committee member and a few years later encouraged her to join him.

“I enjoy it, it’s the relationships,” Ms Glenn said.

“I’m a community-minded person, I always have been.”

She’s lived in Greater Dandenong all her life and been a regular show attendee.

“When I was a kid it was probably all about the rides and show bags and the animals,” she said.

“Now I think it’s probably the friendships and seeing the kids’ faces when they look at things.

“Personally I have to see the animals in the animal nursery. I just love baby animals.”

Ms Glenn hopes to encourage more young people to join the show team during her term.

“We need to have some of the older people be prepared to mentor them,” she said.

“Having something like that on their CV would have to be a good thing when it’s a volunteer position.”

Ms Glenn said this year’s event schedule was now available at the revamped dandyshow.com. au site.

“Our Facebook page is up and running. We’ll have a competition later this year, so people should find and like the page for a chance to win some free tickets,” she said.

“We’ve also got an Instagram account that we’ll be posting to as well this year.”

Show highlight of arts talent

New Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society president Sue Glenn says the animal nursery is a must-see.

The 11th Noble Park Community Centre Art Show will highlight hundreds of paintings and sculptures from artists from all walks of life.

“We’re pretty excited,” one of the organisers Shelly Kemp said.

“We’ve had plenty of entries through. It’s up to about 250 entries - that’s not including all the schools and aged care and all abilities groups.

“We’re hoping to have about eight schools this year.

“It’s always interesting because there’s a vast array of age groups involved as well.”

Ms Kemp said some students had challenged themselves with sculptures.

“There’s a massive array of different types of artwork which is really great to see,” she said.

Artist Heather Duggan said the show reflected Greater Dandenong’s multicultural community, through its entrants in the open section and from local schools, in particular Noble Park English Language School.

This year’s judge will be Phin Murphy from Sinatra Murphy who has worked in landscape architecture, remote community planning, public art and publication over the past 25 years.

Community development and engagement underpins his work and he’s received numerous awards in recognition.

Organisers launched the event at Noble Park Community Centre at Ross Reserve, Memorial Drive, Noble Park, on Thursday 28 July.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak will officially open the three-day show at 7pm on Friday 14 October.

Hundreds of dollars in prizes will be awarded to open and junior winners.

Entry to opening night is free of charge.

The art show will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October.

By Nick Creely There’s something special brewing for the Dandenong Jayco Rangers this season.

Whether it’s the exciting new recruits, or the continued development of their squad, or the incredible work done by the sponsors and the board, The Rangers are building a winning culture.

The entire squad was unveiled at the season launch on Wednesday 21 September at the Well in Dandenong South, and the club is buzzing with excitement.

The packed restaurant was full of energy and enthusiasm with the supporters, sponsors, players and coaches all supremely confident that the squad was primed to be the best.

Speaking at the official launch, Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was buoyant about the upcoming season and spoke glowingly about what the club is capable of.

“Once again, I am extremely proud of how the group has come together in the lead up to the upcoming season.

“Our pre-season is quite different to most since so many of our players participate in the SEABL competition during the off season.

“It is important we just stay focussed on what we need to do so that we are both fresh but also ready for the start of the WNBL season.

“We’re in a good place; we’ve got a lot of work to do step-by-step but I think that we have built a really good core group.

“A couple of the girls were saying last night that they feel a little bit more advanced than this time last year so that is a good sign.

“As a coach you always like more time to prepare for such a big season but there is nothing you can do when seasons are so close to each other.

“You are looking at a very special group of

Anderson was excited about the upcoming pre-season matches, saying that the group were eager to get the season started.

“These quality matches are exactly what we need a couple of weeks out from the opening round.

“We’ve got one more session tomorrow night and then I am very much looking forward to seeing where we are at,” Anderson said.

Co-captain Aimie Clydesdale is also eagerly anticipating the arrival of the season saying she has overcome her injuries from last season and worked on certain areas of her own game.

“I want to have more of an impact as last sea-

son was really disappointing getting injured and it was quite tough to get myself back in.

“I’ve really worked on my outside shot and my pull-up jump-shot for this season as I’ve always been seen as a driver and teams kind of play me that way.

“I just want to have more of a scoring threat and distribute the ball, get other players shots.”

Clydesdale is also extremely confident about the team’s hopes going into the season, saying the squad has its eyes on the major prize.

“I genuinely think that we have the team that can do it and bringing back so many girls from last season means we aren’t starting from scratch.

The Rangers kick-off their season against UC Capitals at Southern Cross Stadium on 8 October

with tip-off at 5pm.

“Canberra’s not that far so if anyone feels like a weekend away, we would love some Ranger fans to make the trip with us on 8 October.”

The first Dandenong home match will be against Perth Lynx on 16 October with tip-off at 5pm and the club is hoping for a full-house at Dandenong Stadium to lift the team.

Panthers claw their way up and look set to leap

Finishing near the bottom in the club championship will be something the boys at Shepley Oval will be hoping never happens again.

The club has brought in some fantastic youth, has recruited well and its front-line players are still getting the job done.

With a rejuvenation of some quality youngsters, the Panthers look fresh and ready to go.

What to expect: The club has added to its depth through the signings of Lincoln Edwards, a solid middle-order batsman from Melbourne and Jacques Augustin from Fitzroy Doncaster.

Noble Park champion Stewart Kemperman will take on his first full-time senior coaching role - appointed coach of Berwick for the 2017 South East Football Netball League season.

The former Berwick junior replaces Rhys Nisbet who stood down after four years in the role after Saturday’s grand final loss to Cranbourne.

The appointment is the result of a careful and well-orchestrated plan from Berwick which had a commitment from Kemperman roughly 10 weeks ago.

In an unusual move, Berwick president Glenn Gambetta informed the club’s committee that a coaching selection panel had selected a new coach for next year but he was unable to provide the committee with the name of the successful candidate.

“We wanted the transition to be as smooth as possible and I think the club has handled the whole process in a very professional manner,” Gambetta said.

Kemperman’s playing credentials are impeccable.

After his junior days at Berwick he played with the Dandenong Stingrays, played in a senior premiership with Beaconsfield in 2003, before spending four years with Frankston in the VFL. He moved from Kars Street to Noble Park in 2007 and became a club legend.

The now 32-year-old used his raking left-foot to full effect, playing a key role in multiple premiership victories for the Bulls.

“First and foremost, I’m privileged and honoured to take on the senior job at Berwick,” Kemperman said.

“It’s a massive role, one I definitely don’t take for granted, and I can’t wait to get involved heavily both on and off the field. "

MOTORING It’s superb by name and nature

By Derek Ogden Rarely does a vehicle go anywhere near living up to its title but the Skoda’s Superb goes mighty close.

The new model offers increased interior space for occupants and luggage and more driver assistance derived from upper-class vehicles.

Skoda had the confidence in its product to give me the entry-level Superb 2.0 162TSI sedan with a price tag of $39,990, plus on-road costs.
