Gifts to warm the heart BY JUSTIN FLYNN SOMETIMES the most simple of gestures can evoke the biggest response. And that’s why Encompass Community Services on Pakington Street has helped launch a drop-off point for good quality warm clothing for people in need during the colder months. The initiative is named ‘Clothing the Community’. The idea was the brainchild of Bellarine police’s Leading Senior Constable Laurie Taylor. “We probably see more disadvantaged people than most in our job,” he says. “It’s an area that we can push them in the right direction.” People in need often require adequate clothing during winter and spring. The idea is for Geelong West and Newtown people to donate a good quality jacket or other item of warm clothing to a drop-off box at Encompass Community Services. Encompass is a not-for-profit organisation committed to promoting equality and opportunity for people. It offers support to people with physical, intellectual, sensory and psychological disabilities, young people who are disengaged, long-term unemployed and those facing financial, social or learning barriers.

Encompass marketing and communications manager Kiane McKinlay says that people with a disadvantage or disability were often in need of help. “Our goal is that anyone who walks through our door with a problem can be helped and listened to,” she says. In a normal month, the Encompass head office in Pakington Street receives 100 bags of clothing. Last year, after running a similar program during July, it recieved 600 bags and this year it jumped to 1500 bags. “The clothing goes to our op shop called Ready Start and it’s used for people who want to get clothing so they can attend job interviews for example,” Kiane says. Encompass’s aim is to help people in need. “We get to know our customers and their circumstances,“ Kiane says. “We recently helped a grandmother who has taken care of her three grandchildren after their mother was suffering from substance abuse.” Encompass, based at 400 Pakington Street, Geelong West, has been operating for 30 years and was right behind the initiative. Those wanting to donate can drop off pre-loved warm clothing at 400 Pakington Street.

ZAKIS Fish and Grill offers its customers traditional fish and chips with a modern spin. Located at Pako’s river end, the contemporary fish and chip shop has been operating since January 2015. And business owner Chris Topouzakis is no stranger to a good fish and chip shop. “My family have had fish and chip shops in the past, my grandparents owned a Geelongbased fish and chip shop – it runs in the family,” he says. Chris says having his first fish and chip business on Pako is “a dream come true”. “It’s a little community down here – we really enjoy the friendly atmosphere.” The well-thought-out space features bench seating, modern industrial lights and bright yellow chairs for a pop of colour. “We get such a great response from customers – they often say ‘this doesn’t look like a fish and chip shop, it’s too clean and modern’,” Chris laughs. “We wanted something vibrant and clean, so we created a place for our customers to

Flower power takes over f lorist BY EMILY ROBINSON TASMANIA’S renowned floral designer Grant Collins is taking over one of Geelong’s oldest florists. And he has big plans in store. The building now occupied by Mr Collins Florist, formerly known as West City Florist, has been on Pako for over 42 years in the same location. “I purchased the business in March and have just relocated here from Tasmania, where I previously had three florists,” Mr Collins said. “I was having lunch at Rushbrooks’ Cafe across the road and noticed this was for sale.” Mr Collins will start transforming the space over the next six months. “We are going to restyle the space and give it a luxe look.” Marble, dark wood, panelled counters, heavy crystal vases, hardwood floors, hanging plants from the ceiling and a touch of gold will see the florist become the best dressed in Geelong. “We’ll also have seasonal ranges of indoor plants, vases, simple gift lines and select cards that complement our quality designs,” Mr Collins added as he raced off to create a generous bouquet for a client. Asked why he loves being a florist, Mr Collins said it gives him “an opportunity to be creative” and to use his “business mind”.

“I sit on the board of directors at Interflora – it’s a worldwide company of about 60,000 florists. “I was the 2015 Victorian and Tasmanian Interflorist of the year and have won the competition four times. “The competition involves competing against other florists in both states, sort of like a MasterChef competition where you have surprise boxes and scheduled items.” Mr Collins has more than

30 years’ experience in weddings, events and creating family tributes. “I hate it when people say ‘flowers for all occasions’ – it’s not 1982. “We were the preferred supplier in Northern Tasmania to the premium heritage estates and vineyards and two of Launceston’s funeral homes.” Mr Collins has built a reputation among his suppliers as their “fussiest customer”. “My wholesalers in Launceston were probably

pleased to see the back of me,” he said, laughing. “I won’t take any damaged or inferior stock.” The renowned Tasmanian florist said it was “interesting going back to being a newbie” and having to prove his ability. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of building exciting, new business relationships in Geelong. “We want this place to become a little oasis – a place you need to come to visit on Pako.”

A fresh look on the landscape AWARD-WINNING landscape designer Christian Jenkins has brought life to Pakington Street with new business Garden Works Australia Garden Concept Studio. The business owner transformed the previous “daggy car park” into a garden wonderland with a vineyard inspired courtyard and iconic pod shaped outdoor room. The space also features a Balinese hut, Japanese garden, outdoor kitchen, water features, sculptures and decorative pots. Starting out as a gardener 20 years ago, Christian has gone on to win eight awards at Melbourne’s International Flower and Garden shows for

his design and creativity. “Last year we won the people’s choice award. This year we got a bronze medal and last year I got silver,” Christian explains. He’s also spent the previous two years creating gardens for non-for-profit organisation Beyond Blue. “We’ve made a connection between anxiety and depression and the benefits gardens bring in terms of tranquillity and calmness.” But lately his energy has been focused on new venture with business partner Steven Easton who owns Dalton Building & Garden Supplies in Melbourne.

Christian, owner of the renowned Landscape Design Group says it made sense for the two to create the concept garden studio. “I came up with the idea of creating mini garden showrooms - I’ve created five different style gardens in Garden Works Australia. “In Victoria I’ve never seen anything like this - it’s such a unique business model.” Christian also describes the new space as a nursery, adding that people are encouraged to visit the business to get the right advice on plants. “We can also source any plant - we’re not a traditional nursery.

“People can come in and choose a particular style garden and look through the work I’ve done previously. It all starts with an onsite consultation. “People get to see the latest landscaping services that are available on the market. We have a really wide range of natural stone pavers, including bluestone, granite and travertine. “We also have the most diverse range of wall claddings. Vertical gardens, water features and designer pots are also available,” he says. Asked what’s on trend for those designing their backyard, Christian says without a doubt “seated fire pit areas, decks, winding river streams and

Cruise gives a chance to chill Cruiseabout Pakington Street team leader Dave Ellis shares his voyage to the bottom of the world with Voice On Pako. ANTARCTICA is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America and South America. Some 98 per cent of Antarctic is covered by ice, which averages at least 1.6 kilometres in thickness. It was mid-February and I travelled to the coldest, driest, and windiest continent where there are no permanent human residents or any evidence of any pre-historic indigenous population. It lies in darkness at the bottom of the world. It’s a vast unknown like an afterthought of creation. Antarctica would prove to be an adventure that makes life worth living. GETTING THERE We travelled by air to our departure port at the very bottom of South America, a little town called Ushuaia blink and you miss it. We boarded what was going to be home for the next 21 days, she was called the Akademik Sergey Vavilov and we were excited to say the least. Our cruise was taking us to the South Shetland Islands, Faulkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctica Peninsula. The Vavilov was built in Finland in the late 1980s for the

Russian Academy of Science and was recognised as one of the finest expedition ships to ever sail the polar seas. THE DRAKE PASSAGE – THE ROUGHEST STRETCH OF WATER IN THE WORLD Getting to the Antarctica is no mean feat. This is the body of water between the southern tip of South America at Cape Horn and Antarctica. It’s called the Southern Ocean and is the ocean that circumnavigates the Antarctic. It’s the fourth largest ocean in the world. This passage held up to its reputation as the roughest stretch in the world. On the big sea days people tend to retreat to their cabins, so pack the seasick tablets! On the return journey it was more like the Drake pond – very calm.

OTHER SHIP-BOARD AMENITIES On warm days, (think we had about one hour over the whole trip) I swam in the top side pool then warmed up in the sauna. There’s something surreal about relaxing in a sauna in the middle of the Southern Ocean at the end of the world. During the day I attended the odd lecture about the animals and global warming.

ZODIAC CRUISING, PENGUINS, ICEBERGS, SEALS AND SUN I was mesmerised from the first moment I set eyes on the continent. It was a place that expanded my senses of time. It was gracefully peaceful. I listened to the silence outside my porthole. The skies were flawless blue with marshmallow clouds. The sun was shining for 17 hours a day and the temperature about 0 degrees Celsius. It was truly another world. When weather permitted, as it did for most of this cruise, I

took shore excursions (zodiac cruising) among icebergs to the continent itself. And it was Saturday at 1pm that I first stepped foot on Half Moon Island, part of the seventh continent of the world, Antarctica. I became one of the approximate 35,000 people to do so each year. There was a sizable rookery of Chinstrap and Adelie penguins and an abundant bird population of terns, petrels, cormorants, wandering albatross and whales. I saw stunning views of surrounding volcanic

mountains. The highlight by far was the South Georgia stops - it’s an absolute wonderland for wildlife. Words cannot describe the amazing scenery that I came across, from a colony of breading King Penguins (about 300,000plus) to meeting around 95 per cent of the world’s fur seals on the one place! Geelong West resident and business owner Karen Liu says she offers an “oriental experience in the heart of Pako”. “We have spices, pickles, sauces, cooking meats, frozen products and more,” she says. “We also cater for restaurants and cafes as well as retail customers.” Now operating for three years on Pako, the Asian grocery store has become renowned for its dumplings and excellent customer service. “Normally the Asian groceries are very narrow, but my shop has more room for families to come in, they can push their prams and trollies around easily. “We’re different from other Asian grocery stores – all of my staff have good English communication skills and are able to answer questions.”

On-trend and feeling fab ON-TREND, comfortable and affordable fashion – yes ladies, it’s here. Business owner Seona Mooney has found the perfect place to open Jaggers Closet. Now in business for three months, the wife of former Geelong Cats player Cameron Mooney says the fashion boutique is “thriving” in Newtown. The store, named after her eldest son Jagger, originally opened as a boutique kids’ wear collection in Melbourne. “I designed baby-wear for two years and sold it online which led me to opening a children’s wear boutique in Port Melbourne where we operated for five years,” Seona says. “Half way in I added some women’s wear as I found a lack thereof in the area – that every-day, on-trend yet affordable casual wear.” But opening a shopfront in Geelong wasn’t always a part of the plan. “Cam and I had basically just welcomed our fourth baby and opening another business wasn’t exactly on the plans just yet – but the opportunity came our way and we were in such a perfect position that we took the chance.” The boutique is a breath of fresh air, with crisp white walls, touches of black hardware and lots of greenery. “In another life I’ll get into interior design or personal styling,” Seona says. But for now she’s enjoying being the

one-stop shop for women’s affordable, yet fashionable and on-trend style. Motivating labels have appeal PAKO’S new activewear boutique Balance Geelong is offering women premium local and international activewear labels, taking women to and from the gym, yoga, Pilates, the track and anywhere else they want to go. Business owner Katy Irwin says it was always a dream to own a business of her own. “Fashion and retail has been my background. Being in the industry you see all these people succeed and you always want to do something of your own,” Katy says. “I didn’t think I’d be doing it this early in my career though,” she laughs.

Asked why she chose activewear, Katy says exercise and healthy living is a “massive passion” of hers. “It’s also a growing market. There are lots of online stores that offer it, but not many bricks and mortar businesses. “I wanted to offer people that point of difference.” Having her business on Pako was a no-brainer. “I definitely wanted to be on Pakington Street. I had sat on my idea for a year until I found the right location. I love being within that boutique environment.” Now open for five months, Katy says that the response so far

has been “really positive”. “I think it’s been a good thing for Geelong – people are really excited that there’s something new to the area.” Shoppers can purchase a pair of leggings for $60, but Katy also stocks brands ranging up to $170. I want everyone who comes into Balance to feel motivated in their activewear to live a healthier, balanced, lifestyle. “I have a mix of labels and products that cater for a wide demographic and age group. “With so many amazing new labels entering the market, there is no need to wear our daggy old gym clothes anymore.” Katy says many of her buyers are university students and mums. “I have some uni students who tell me they wear their

activewear to classes. “I also have lots of mums in here, and they often say just how easy it is to chuck activewear in the wash. “It’s kid friendly and it’s comfortable. Mums are always bending down, picking up babies and activewear moves with their bodies.” Katy also stocks accessories, gym bags, socks, gym towels, water bottles, yoga mats, arm bands, street sneakers and more. The best way to help prevent osteoporosis is living a healthy lifestyle, not smoking, plenty of exercise and a healthy diet. The sweet potato smash I was honestly - a little hesitant to order, but I had heard such great things from other people.

The mash was spiced with cumin, paprika and coriander which gave it such a beautiful flavour, I was left wanting more. The smoked salmon avocado with greens, hollandaise and horseradish cream blew my mind - it was so fresh and tasty. We think you should head on into Box Office to see what is on offer. Mark and the team are doing wonderful things and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for Box Office. PS: Did we mention every Tuesday is donut day ... Unless you live in Japan and are able to get your hands on Natto (fermented soy beans) regularly then it would be very hard to include this in your diet.ii So a good bone supplement will contain all of vitamin D3, magnesium, vitamin K2, calcium (in multiple forms) and ideally a few other trace elements such as silicon and copper. It’s been a while since we have done a little foodie review on somewhere delicious, so I started scrolling my Instagram feed for somewhere to eat/ review ... BAM there it was, Box Office Cafe. If you haven’t heard of Box Office, don’t worry I am about to unleash part of its glory here and now. Box Office is hidden just off Pakington Street in a funky recycled shipping container with even more recycled goodies hidden around the area. They serve speciality coffee (Axil speciality coffee) and thrive on supplying a lot of local businesses, one of them being my favourite, The Sweetest Thing Geelong, serving delicious raw and nonraw treats. We got to have a brief chat with business owner Mark Stawicki, who has built a name for himself working within the industry for many years, having had previous businesses prior to Box Office. He explained to us the importance of sourcing locally and how Box Office came about.You can truly see the passion someone has for their business when

We knew we wanted it to happen in Geelong, so our business was a year in the making. When did you open your business? Jake Munday and I opened our business two weeks ago on Saturday, so this is just a start for us. We are located just off Pakington Street, at 75 Preston Street. How many different juices do you make? We make eight different types of cold pressed juice, using our state-of-the-art cold press juice machine. For example, we sell two types of green juice called the Rolls Royce and the Everyday Green.
