TOOLANGI’S Forest Discovery Centre is being brought back up to scratch and will re-open after four years next month, with DELWP handing over the keys to a group of community members.

On Wednesday 7 September, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s Regional Manager for the Hume region James Stewart handed over the keys to the Forest Discovery Centre to a management committee which is working to reopen the centre.

The centre was closed down in 2012 due to the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE, now DELWP)’s building compliance costs.

Interim management committee member Steve Meacher said that despite being unoccupied for four years, the building was in “excellent” condition.

“Most of the necessary bits and pieces for running it are in place, or at least still in the building, and just need sorting out and putting back in the appropriate place and so on,” he said.

“It’s ready for us to start work and make preparations to get it open.

“Of course, there are no displays or anything there at this stage - that’s something else we need to work on - but we’ll soon be there.”

The handover came after a meeting in February between DELWP and about 70 Toolangi residents to discuss the future of the centre.

At the time a business case was to be developed by community members liaising with DELWP before any decisions were made about management of the building.

Mr Meacher said the committee would be working on cleaning and preparing the building with volunteers aiming to have it open by the time of the CJ Dennis Festival on 22 October.

He said the building would host educational programs and operate as a tourist information centre and an arts and cultural centre, with a gallery space and the potential for a small cinema and coffee shop to be housed there.

“We need to make sure that it is financially viable - it’s got to pay its own way and so on, but we’ll be calling for community volunteers to help out with things like meeting tourists during the week and explaining what goes on,” he said.

“It’s been a long four years and there’s actually huge excitement throughout Toolangi - people keep approaching us and saying ‘is that real?’.”

Mr Meacher said the centre would be used to “educate people about the forests” but in a way that “respected government policy”.

“So, for instance, we won’t be using it for a campaign centre for the Great Forest National Park,” he said.

“But, once the Great Forest National Park is adopted by the government, then, of course, it will be an information centre for the park.

“Currently, it will be an information centre for Kinglake National Park and the Toolangi State Forest - it will have that role in the community.”

Mr Stewart said DELWP was “impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm” of the community members in preparing for the project.

“We look forward with confidence to continuing work with the committee to ensure the centre has a bright future and a strong role in the community for years to come.”

Love and respect the key

By Jodie Symonds IT WAS winter of 1954 at a dance in Warburton, where Launching Place lovers Bill and Mary Cook crossed paths and, before they knew it, they had created their own love story.

The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday 4 August.

Mary caught the eye of Bill, and at the end of the night he asked her if he could take her home.

“I wasn’t after anything I just wanted a bit of a dance, but I said alright,” Mary said.

Bill also invited about four other people to join them, and a miscommunication of directions led him to roll the car at the end of Mary’s road.

“We all got out because he had rolled it - and then he asked me if I still wanted a lift and there was no chance of that,” Mary said.

Bill’s charm worked - two years later the couple exchanged vows at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warburton in 1956.

“I did think he was a rather nice chap,” Mary said.

They spent their honeymoon in Warrnambool and 12 months later they brought a baby girl named Jenny into the world.

Mary and Bill had four more children, Sue, Kerry, Vicki and Julie, and moved to Morwell.

In 1970, the couple moved back

to the Yarra Valley and settled in Launching Place, with plans to be closer to Mary’s parents.

Bill said the secret to a happy marriage is respecting each other.

“I like her sense of humour and she’s very caring - she also has a great strength of character,” Bill said.

Mary said Bill has a wicked sense of humour but can be stubborn.

“Speak for yourself,” she said.

The couple exercise every day using their home gym equipment, and said keeping fit is the key to living a long and healthy life.

“We’re always active, we go to the movies and we’re always having outings,” Mary said.

“I mean if you sit at home and don’t do anything it’s just not good for you,” she said.

In 1999 devastation shocked the Cook family, when cancer took the life of their grandson Richard, at age seven.

“It really was the biggest blow,” Mary said.

“Richie was two when he was diagnosed then passed five years later.”

The couple agreed overcoming adversity had made them appreciate the happy times in life.

Mary and Bill are grandparents to 11 and great-grandparents to four.

HEALESVILLE kids will have plenty of time to learn literacy and numeracy skills before heading to school, with Rotary donating $1000 worth of resources to Queens Park Kindergarten.

Earlier this year, the Rotary Club of Healesville donated more than $1000 to the kindergarten for literacy and numeracy resources for students.

Teacher Kelly Weller told the Mail that the money had purchased puzzles, magnetic numbers and counters, a clock and a world globe, among other items.

She said two parents had approached Rotary earlier in the year about potential funds, with the kindergarten raising money for a new outdoor playground and unable to spare money for the resources.

Earlier in the term, the club came through and offered to help by providing funds.

Ms Weller said the kindergarten’s 61 students, who range from three to five-year-olds, were enjoying the new items and learning more about the world around them.

“They’re really interested in maths and things,” she said.

“At the moment, we’re talking about space and earth ... so they’re really into the globe - some of them have got relatives overseas, so we look at that.”

Cash is going green

By Jesse Graham THE Rotary Club of Healesville is calling for donations to help rejuvenate the grounds of the Maroondah Reservoir Park, funding a group of passionate environmentalists.

Rotary is donating $500 to the Maroondah Reservoir Friends Group, set up by former Green Army members, to assist with their works in beautifying and maintaining the areas around the reservoir park.

The club is also seeking donations from the public to complement their own and Rotarian Dr Ian Tinney said the club’s donation followed a letter in the Mail from Healesville’s Judy Macdonald on 30 August.

The letter outlined the work of the group in clearing paths and drains and maintaining the garden after “so many years of neglect”.

“As there are so many clubs in Healesville, I wonder if they could all make a one-off donation of say $50, around the same time, to enable purchase of large numbers of plants,” the letter read.

“Come on Healesville, let’s get behind them!”

Dr Tinney said the money will go towards buying plants for the group to place around the area and that he hoped residents and other community groups would donate to keep the work going.

“I think it’s excellent ... you can see the work that they have put in,” he said.

“It would be brilliant if we could get it (the reservoir park) approaching what it used to be like.”

Thieves ransack clinics POLICE are calling for witnesses to come forward, after a car theft and a series of burglaries in Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Mount Evelyn last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between 2.30-7am on Friday 16 September, unknown persons broke into a medical clinic on Alfred Road, Lilydale.

The clinic was searched, but nothing was taken.

A second clinic on Swansea Road in Lilydale was then broken into, with nothing stolen from the premises, before a commercial property on Station Street, Mount Evelyn, was broken into.

About $500 was taken from the Station Street property, and Det Sgt Berardi said police believed the thief or thieves were linked to a red Holden station wagon, stolen from Bimbi Court in Mooroolbark on the same night.

The car was later found dumped on the corner of Turella Court and Meadowlark Lane in Mooroolbark.

Spider drop-in puts branch in car

By Jesse Graham A KINGLAKE driver was lucky to survive a crash after flipping and rolling her car several times in Dixons Creek last week.

On Thursday, 8 September, the 21-year-old Kinglake woman was driving along the Melba Highway in Dixons Creek when she lost control of her car.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said the car subsequently rolled several times and a large tree limb smashed through her windscreen and into the centre console of the car.

He said the driver was “extremely lucky" not to be impaled by the limb, and that the driver said she lost control after a large spider landed in her lap.

THREE men will face court after allegedly burgling a commercial property in Wandin North, only to be caught by police a short time later.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that in the early hours of Sunday 18 September, three men allegedly forced entry to a commercial premises on Warburton Highway in Wandin North.

The men are then believed to have stolen $500 in cash, but were located later that morning in Woori Yallock by police.

A 29-year-old Croydon man, a 39-year-old Bayswater man and a 35-year-old Mornington man were arrested, charged with burglary and theft, and remanded to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Golf bag, buggy stolen A GOLF bag and buggy were stolen from a Lilydale property last week, and police are asking anyone with information - or whose friends suddenly have a new golf bag - to come forward.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between Friday 9 and Friday 16 September, thieves entered a shed at a property on Edinburgh Road, Lilydale.

The thieves then made off with a golf bag and buggy, worth a total of $600.

POLICE are hunting for a thief who made off with $4000 worth of tools from a Healesville property last week, and are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that overnight between Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September, unknown persons broke into a shed at a Chum Creek Road property in Healesville.

Det Sgt Berardi said a padlock was removed from the shed and two chainsaws and a demolition saw, worth $4000, were stolen from the shed.

Conservation area appeal

Jess stays an oldie but a goodie HEALESVILLE Sanctuary’s oldest resident has marked another milestone, with Jess the wedge-tailed eagle celebrating his 46th birthday on Friday 16 September.

The eagle became a resident in 1974, after being rescued four years earlier by Graham Carkeek in the Warburton Ranges.

Jess’ nest had fallen out of a tree and he was too young to fend for himself, so Mr Carkeek, who worked at the sanctuary in the 1940s, built a nest in

his Lilydale garage to care for the animal.

When laws changed in 1974 to require rehabilitators to have permits to care for native wildlife, Jess was brought to the sanctuary.

Since then, Jess has become one of the most iconic residents at the venue, featuring on Australia Post’s 60 cent stamp and on Wolf Blass’ wine labels, as well as having a cameo in the film Healing.

Jess is now flown by keeper James Goodridge, who said it was a “privilege” to work with the eagle.

“It really is a privilege to work with these amazing birds, knowing that they are making the choice to work with you,” he said.

“It’s these kinds of interactions that make me feel like I have a mutual bond with him.”

Jess flies often during the sanctuary’s midday Spirits of the Sky presentation, alongside other Australian birds, including a barking owl and sulphurcrested cockatoo.

It is estimated by keepers that Jess has flown more than 160,000 fly-bys while at the sanctuary.

significance of what bringing back those licences did, I would never have signed it.”

DELWP Regional Director of the Port Phillip area Kelly Crosthwaite said the department had received feedback from landholders and had endeavored to improve their communication regarding the conservation area.

“DELWP has since received feedback that the communication to date has not adequately engaged affected landholders.

We have since held two community drop-in sessions in Yarra Junction and Woori Yallock, and are providing the opportunity for one-on-one site visits with each affected landholder.

“In addition, there will be extensive community engagement in the development of plans for the long-term management of the park, including bushfire risk management, biodiversity and water quality, weed and pest animal management, and recreational use.”

Cr Child has called on the Yarra Ranges Council to come to the aid of these landholders and write to the minister to downsize the conservation investigation area.

The motion was passed unanimously by council and relevant authorities including DELWP have been made aware of it.

Full & partial road closures will be occurring along Healesville Yarra Glen Road, Yarra Glen Bypass and River Street.

Public Transport Diversions will also be in place.

Local access will be maintained during the event. Delays expected.

THE development and implementation of the proposed increase to the Yellingbo Conservation Area has been stalled after Yarra Ranges Council responded to the outcry of distressed Upper Yarra residents.

At a council meeting on Tuesday 13 September, Councillor Jim Child put forward a motion to request that the State Environment Minister downsize the conservation investigation area.

The original investigation area for the development of a new plant and wildlife preservation area, headed by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC), was expanded in 2013 to include farming land in the Upper Yarra Valley.

The land covered by the expanded investigation area would see landholders who currently hold grazing licences have their licences phased out and the land used for nature conservation.

Landholders in the Upper Yarra area say they were only informed of this plan recently via a letter from DELWP. Don Valley Farmer Rick Houlihan said it was unfair to phase out grazing licences in the current investigation area and farmers in the area were not properly consulted on the plans to do so.

“We’ve had our licence since the early '60s and we are one of the properties that fall in the investigation area and would be affected by the licence phaseout,” he said.

“What happened with the investigation was one small ad in the paper - some of us saw it, but most didn’t.

“We are used to seeing stories in the paper about the conservation area and we support it but none of us took notice of it as licence holders because none of us were officially told it would involve us.”

In his council meeting speech, Cr Child said the lack of communication from the VEAC and other statutory bodies has left the community disenfranchised.

“What has brought this to a head is the way a particular part of our valley has been disenfranchised,” he said.

Cr Child addressed part of his speech directly to landholders and members of the Yarra Waterways Group - made up of members of the Upper Yarra Community.

“You were left out and that has now been cemented in my mind,” he said “When I signed off in February 2013 supporting the implementation of the conservation area recommendations, if I had known about the letter increasing the area, if I had known the

Wedged MAY I suggest that by supporting Amendment C148, councillors of Yarra Ranges may have inadvertently gone against the best interests of ratepayers of Green Wedge Zoned farmlands?

This C148 may, in many cases, result in a reduction in the value of properties.

This reduction in equity may result in a breach of mortgage agreements with bankers.

The two environmental overlays (ESO and SLO) effectively introduce two more charges on all farmland property.

This essentially takes away more freehold property rights, ultra vires, without compensation and may lead property owners into breaching their mortgage, overdraft and mortgage insurance loan agreements with banks and lessors, too.

Not many people read the fine print; anyone voting with council may be breaching their own agreements.

Have these property owners checked with their lenders?

I will be seeking to raise these issues with the big four banks to see if they might have a view to protecting mortgagor’s interests and may require some further representations to the Royal Commission into banks and the banking ombudsman.

Opinion may also be needed to protect home buyers if they inadvertently breach their loan agreements.

I suggest that these property owners hold off their support until the banks clarify this equity issue.

With lower equities, borrowers may be pushed into higher interest rates at best, loss of property at worst.

Costs farmed out I RECENTLY received my (Yarra Ranges) 2016'17 valuation and rate notice and discovered that our rates had been charged at the residential rate, but our fire services property levy had been charged at the primary production rate.

When I asked how our property could be both residential and primary production, I was informed that, because we are not running any form of agricultural enterprise, our property is classed as residential but, because we have the potential for an agricultural enterprise, the fire services levy is charged at the primary production rate.

No prizes for guessing which rate is the higher in each case.

HEALESVILLE’S former chamber of commerce president will avoid a jail term and serve 200 hours of community work for 48 counts of fraud, after a County Court appeal on Monday.

Graham Taylor, 60, appeared at the County Court of Victoria on Monday, 12 September, to appeal a nine-month jail sentence handed down in May. The sentence came after he pleaded guilty in April to 48 charges of fraud and deception, where he stole money from people’s credit cards; stole money and wine from Rochford Wines, where he worked; used credit cards falsely to purchase concert tickets and stole money from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce, where he was president until his arrest in 2015.

The Mail reported that Taylor used credit cards 33 times for cash advances, and on one occasion stole wine from Rochford for a victim, to maintain the guise of having used their credit card legitimately.

After being sentenced to jail in May, Taylor lodged an appeal with the County Court, and Judge Lisa Hannan set aside the nine-month sentence, in favour of a Community Corrections Order.

Under the order, Taylor must complete 200 hours of unpaid community work in the next 18 months, undergo testing and rehabilitation for mental health issues and have a DNA sample taken to be placed on a police database.

Judge Hannan said she had to give consideration to whether the sentence would deter others considering doing the same crime, as well

Hospital facelift

By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE Hospital’s redevelopment is coming together ahead of its re-opening early next year, with patient rooms and a new operating theatre being finished off.

The hospital site on Maroondah Highway is currently abuzz with tradies and construction workers, putting together the $8.8 million redevelopment of the building ahead of its opening next year.

On Friday 2 September, the Mail toured the hospital site with Eastern Health representatives and manager of Capital Projects, Mark Hoffman.

The patient rooms, which now feature their own ensuites, are structurally finished, with the final touches yet to be added, and the core of the building coming together.

Mr Hoffman said the ensuites were a welcome addition to the hospital, with the former building having only communal bathroom areas for patients.

Patients will also have a dining and lounge space outside of their rooms with a brick feature wall from the original structure and a view out towards the mountains.

The new operating theatre, which includes its own waiting and recovery area, also looks almost ready to host patients - a stark contrast to the Mail’s last visit in March, where the theatre was just a wooden frame in concrete.

Much of the building’s interior has a simple colour palate and a more modern design than the old hospital, something Mr Hoffman said was a “focus” the whole way

through the development.

He said natural light was utilised as much as possible, with wide windows in the gym area, the patient lounge and the dialysis area - with several chairs looking out to the front gardens at the hospital.

Mr Hoffman said the relaxing view would be important for dialysis patients some of whom can spend five hours a day, three days a week, undergoing treatment.

Though about 30 builders and staff are on site at the hospital, Mr Hoffman said local tradies were being utilised throughout the project.

The hospital is will open early next year, and Eastern Health is expected to make an announcement soon regarding a potential name change for the hospital.

YARRA Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister has called on her fellow councillors and the council’s governance team to decrease the number of confidential items considered by council.

Cr McAllister made an impassioned plea at a council meeting held on Tuesday 13 September regarding the transparency of council dealings.

“This is a topic we have discussed on many occasions in the last four years in different ways, and I put before you a step forward in dealing with information that comes to council,” she said.

“People have greater confidence in decisions that are made in the open, and the perception is that decisions made behind closed doors is something is being hidden.”

Cr McAllister spoke about the benefits of increasing council transparency as well as the trends of other local governments.

She suggested a method called twinned reports, where two copies of a single report are made, and one version is released to the public with only the sensitive information removed.

This would reduce the overall number of items that are considered by council during the confidential portion of the meetings, and give the public more understanding of council processes.

“Taking information back to the public domain and implementing twinned reports would be positive,” Cr McAllister said.

“The trend is heading that way in the sector, is common overseas, stand us in good stead with our community relationships, and brings information out with a gallery present.”

Cr McAllister also said after the council meeting that ratepayers in the Yarra Ranges Sire had a right to know more details about how public money was spent and managed.

“I’m a big believer in public money - in ratepayers money - that we are making decisions on how to spend, that those decisions be made out in the open,” she said.

The recommendation Cr McAllister put forward at the recent council meeting would see less confidential items at future meetings through closer inspection of the items being considered as confidential.

The recommendation was supported by councillors Jim Child and Len Cox who both spoke in favour of Cr McAllister’s motion.

“I appreciate section 89.2 of the [local government] act, and we have to abide by that but there is flexibility there,” Cr Child said.

“We can have these debates in public and motions can bring bodies of work in the public domain then bring back for out approval.

“It is a step in the right direction and while we practice good governance and are clear and transparent, this is a good step.”

The recommendation was passed unanimously, and Cr McAllister said it was now up to the governance team at the council to work on improving council’s transparency.

Girls will go all out

By Jesse Graham A WOMEN’S day out will be held next month to raise money for breast cancer research, with food, wine and speakers at Wandin’s Sir Paz Estate.

The lunch event, to be held on Thursday 13 October, is being organised by The Valley Collective, an event planning service run by Kate Fraraccio and Reannah Stevens.

Ms Stevens said the day would be the second year they had run a fund-raising event, and that a portion of the ticket price and funds from a raffle would go to the Cancer Council of Victoria.

“We all know someone who is either going through the battle, been through the battle or has lost someone,” she said.

“It’s something everyone can relate to, whether it’s firsthand or they know someone. (And) We like any excuse for women, especially local women, to go out and sit and enjoy themselves for a good cause.”

She said the event was a “fantastic” opportunity for women to network, and that 2015’s event had seen women from around the valley talk about their work with one another - and raise almost $2000 from a raffle.

By Jodie Symonds WARBURTON Arts Centre will welcome the wacky and eccentric Loose Ends for a workshop and performance on 1-2 October.

It will comprise of puppetry, circus, shadow projection, music and transformed objects.

The Loose Ends Performance will be held on Sunday 2 October, about theatrical adventures where gadgets are poetic, puppets are naughty and machines untamed.

The performance is about a story of a man who believed he could organise all of his life in boxes, but was into mischief.

Held on Saturday 1 October, the Wacky Lolly Shooting Machine Workshop will allow participants to form small teams and partake in a roomsized chain-reaction installation out of recycled components.

Throughout the workshop, each team is responsible for one section of the whole installation.

One assembled, the participants will learn to present their part and explain the mistakes and functioning of their section before leading up to the Wacky Lolly Shooting Machine.

The workshop tickets cost $12 and will run between 12pm-1pm; and the Loose Ends Performance tickets cost $18, starting at 3pm.

By Cameron Hutchison DIVISION 2 SENIORS GEMBROOK-COCKATOO has reigned supreme and is Division 2 senior premiers for 2016 after an impressive 39-point victory over Kinglake on Saturday at Yarra Glen.

The conditions were perfect, except for a breeze that was swirly but favoured the river end of the ground.

Gembrook stunned Kinglake in the first quarter, kicking 4.2 while holding Kinglake to six behinds.

Kinglake had plenty of the ball, but the pressure applied by Gembrook from the outset was intense.

Kinglake made a small comeback in the second quarter with the aid of the wind, but Gembrook still managed to kick three goals.

Gembrook’s forward Paul Gramc was the biggest headache for Kinglake, kicking five goals, while Kinglake’s spearheads of Nixon, Mallison and Hibberd were well-held, only kicking two goals between them.

Gembrook added another four goals to two in the premiership quarter, and its lead for the run home was 37 points.

The fat lady certainly had not sung, but she was warming up her vocal cords.

Kinglake could not find the big sticks, kicking 3.6 to 4.1 in the last.

Gembrook-Cockatoo has now earned promotion back to Division 1, after a proud year for the club.

Seville got a slight jump in the first quarter and took a five-point lead into the second quarter.

Yarra Glen had the aid of the wind in the second quarter and kicked 3.4 to three goals to reduce the margin to one-point at half-time.

It was game on.

Seville had the breeze in the third quarter, but failed to capitalise while Yarra Glen managed to kick three goals into the wind.

Seville held onto a three-point lead going into the last.

Yarra Glen had a sniff and this was going to be the one.

It really came down to the last couple of minutes before they could start celebrating, but a solid 2.4 to Seville’s 1 behind was enough to secure the win.

Seville A Grade’s big win

By Cameron Hutchison NETBALL - DIVISION 2 GRAND FINALS A GRADE SEVILLE is the 2016 premiers after comprehensively beating Yarra Glen for the first time this season in the Division 2 A Grade netball final at Yarra Glen.

Seville got the early lead by four goals at quarter time and was never really challenged. They extended the lead to eight goals at half-time.

Seville shot six goals in the third quarter, but kept Yarra Glen to only three.

A huge 10-goal last quarter to five finally gave Seville the flag they were after and the title.

Seville 34 def Yarra Glen 18 Seville Best: Tania Hoare (AFL Yarra Ranges Jade Hottes Best on Court Medallist), Zoe Abbruzzese (7 goals), Riley Gentle.

B GRADE Seville have been crowned Premiers for 2016 after a strong eight goal win over Yea. In a tight first quarter, Yea were able to hold a slim two-point lead. The tigers were able to extend their lead to three goals at half time.

Seville was able to control the ball when it was their centre and get some turnovers in the third and the score was all tied up at 25 at three quarter time.

Seville looked the better of the two teams in the last despite their inaccuracy, shooting 15 goals in the last seven minutes to come away with a well deserved eight goal win.

The scoring was a close affair in the second and their lead was reduced by one at half-time.

Yarra Glen extended their lead by nine goals at three quarter-time.

Shannae Melis and Amy Dennett shot four goals each while the defence held Seville to only three goals.

Seville hit back in the last and outscored Yarra Glen, but the margin was too big to chase down.

Yea hit their straps in the third quarter, shooting seven goals to two to take a five goal lead at three-quarter time.

The visitors continued the ascendancy in the last quarter shooting eight goals to four to secure the victory.

Healesville handled the conditions better pushing the ball forward at all costs.

Jason Savage was proving to be a goal sneak in front of goal and certainly seemed to relish the conditions.

A four-goal-to-two second quarter and Healesville had a lead of nine points at the main break.

Healesville peppered the goals in the third quarter, kicking 2.7 to three straight and the game could have been all but over at three quarter time, but they had given Wandin a sniff and held a slim lead by only 10 points.

Brendon Murphy was playing an inspiring game of football and was unstoppable around the ground.

Wandin were outclassed in the last as Healesville played with a desperation and commitment that if they bring that next week could surprise Olinda.

A four-goal-to-one last quarter put the end to Wandin’s hope for back-toback flags.

The reserves seemed to get the worse of the conditions and scoring was hard for either side.

The ball travelled back and forth between the backlines with little opportunity to score.

Mount Evelyn got an early lead and went into quarter-time after only managing to kick two goals, but they held Healesville to one.

Healesville kicked only one goal in the second quarter, but Mount Evelyn failed to score at all and Healesville had a lead of two points at the main break.

The lead changed again in the third quarter with Mount Evelyn kicking two goals and Healesville only one goal.

The lead was four points at threequarter time and the game was anybodies.

Neither side could manage a major in the last.

Mount Evelyn had the ball in their forward line but could only add fve behinds and get away with a scrappy win by seven points.

to 22 points at three-quarter time.

Another 2.2 to 1.4 in the last and Upwey’s season was all over.

Wandin were struggling in the conditions in the second quarter kicking 1.2, while Emerald kicked three goals straight to go to a 13-point lead at halftime.

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair, however, Emerald managed to maintain the lead.

The last quarter was goal for goal, but Emerald came away with a 15-point win in the end.

Good game for brave dozen

YARRA VALLEY ATHLETICS THE final round of the XCR16 season was held at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens on Saturday morning.

Excellent weather conditions greeted 14 Yarra Ranges Athletics teams to the Tan Relays, held around the wellknown Tan Track in Melbourne.

With many grade premierships still undecided, the quantity and quality of the teams entered was high.

Yarra Ranges Athletics were well placed in many division with very good hopes in Women’s Division 3, Women’s Division 5 and Men’s Under 14.

Over 320 teams entered the most competitive event on the XCR calendar.

Standout performances came from our younger teams with the Under 16 women winning, the Under 14 Boys finishing third and Under 14 girls finishing fourth.

It is always great to see our up and coming stars performing on the big stage.

The absolute highlight of the day was the debut performances from several ‘new’ members.

Great to see Kate Van Duuren, Graeme Woolridge, Maddie Button, Maddie Laven and Indigo Linde made to feel so comfortable and enjoy their first experience of running at an Av event. Well done and welcome.

WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD: In a week when the Yarra Valley had copious rainfall, 12 committed golfers braved the wet conditions to get their mid-week fix! The weather was better than expected during their round, which allowed that evergreen Ossie McClay to score 38 points for a win. An excellent effort, Ossie! Runner-up was ‘Mr Consistent’, Allan Hubbard, with 37 points. The balls extended to 36. The NTPs went to Neil Leckerby (3rd), Allan Hubbard (10th) and to John Hall (15th). Well done to all 12 starters for perservering when more than half the field cancelled!

SATURDAY Stableford: With the weather gods allowing for much friendlier conditions, scoring improved markedly. New member, Ben Lord, playing off an impressive handicap of 5, accumulated 41 very impressive points to win A Grade (and the day). This means Ben shot par (69) off the stick on the day. Motoring Fuel price inquir y call STATE Liberal Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP is backing calls by the Victorian Coalition to establish a parliamentary inquiry into fuel prices in regional Victoria.

Ms McLeish said the inquiry would help answer questions about the methodology of pricing and the divide between metropolitan and rural communities.

“It is no surprise that people living in the country must pay higher prices for petrol. But just how much more should we pay compared to people in the city?” Ms McLeish said.

The inquiry would also consider the impact of fuel prices on families, businesses and industry and assess the influence of regulations and legislation.

The latest fuel report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) shows although petrol prices are falling, these dips are not being passed on to consumers in shrinking retail margins.

“We must clear up the lack of explanation on price discrepancies, especially between metropolitan and regional, and even regional and regional areas,” Ms McLeish said.

Ms McLeish said fuel prices were just one of the cost of living pressures Victorians could share with the Coalition’s CostWatch website: www.costwatch.com.au.

“The CostWatch campaign is committed to driving down costs and making your dollar stretch further,” Ms McLeish said.

Toyota plays it safe

RAV4 features Toyota’s advanced AWD technology, Dynamic Torque Control AWD. It uses information from speed, steering-angle and yaw-rate sensors to control torque transfer between the front and rear wheels.

The range includes three four-cylinder engines, starting with a 107kW 2.0-litre petrol for 2WD variants.

AWD versions can be specified with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that develops 340Nm of torque, or a 2.5-litre petrol engine that develops 132kW. The 2WD 2.0-litre GX is offered with a sixspeed manual gearbox or the option of Toyota’s Multidrive S continuously variable transmission (CVT).

This automatic transmission, which is standard on the 2WD GXL, also provides a sporty, sequential seven-speed mode.

Petrol AWD variants are all fitted with a sixspeed multi-mode sequential-shift automatic transmission.

Diesel AWD RAV4 is offered with manual or automatic transmissions for the GX and is automatic-only for GXL and Cruiser.

Toyota has deleted two low-volume manual GXL grades, retaining the six-speed manual solely for the 2.0-litre petrol two-wheel drive (2WD) and the 2.2-litre diesel AWD. Every new RAV4 is covered by Toyota Service Advantage capped-price servicing at a maximum of $180 per service.

TOYOTA has expanded the availability of advanced safety features, including autonomous braking, to eight of its 10 RAV4 models.

Mid-range GXL variants have also been upgraded with the addition of satellite navigation as standard, along with Toyota Link connected mobility and digital (DAB+) radio.

The safety technology is available as an option for the first time on automatic GX variants while remaining optional on GXL and standard on topof-the-line Cruiser.

Buyers of automatic petrol GXL variants who select the safety pack can also specify dual-tone paint that adds a contrasting silver accent to the bumpers, wheel arches, door sills and side mirrors.

As part of the RAV4 changes, Cruiser allwheel-drive (AWD) petrol and diesel variants gain the convenience of ambient lighting in the foot well and a two-position memory function for the leather-accented driver’s seat.

RAV4’s latest changes follow a substantial update late last year that included sleeker and more dynamic exterior styling, refreshed interiors, Euro 5 engines and the adoption of trailer sway control.

The suite of high-tech safety features includes a forward collision warning system that can automatically apply the car’s brakes, even if the driver takes no action.

It also comes with active cruise control, automatic high beam, lane departure alert with steering assist, rain-sensing wipers, front parking sensors and a sway warning system to aid when towing.

When applied to automatic GX variants, the safety equipment is combined with upmarket features from the GXL. These include satellite navigation, 4.2-inch colour multi-information display, upgraded instrument cluster, digital (DAB+) radio, dusk-sensing headlights, fog lights and revised front bumper.

The option price is $3800 for the GX. For GXL grades, standard fitment of satellite navigation results in an option price of $2500, which also includes blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

The contrasting silver paint, available on petrol variants from $1000, is accompanied by black trim for the headliner and pillars.
