Club growing with the times WHEN Albury’s Commercial Club was established in 1902, the city didn’t even have a population exceeding 6000. Today the city’s population sits at about 45,600.

The Club was founded by 11 men on 7 May, 1902, who sought to form a new club to replace the Border City Club.

Situated in the heart of Albury, it quickly became recognised as a “professional business gentlemen’s only club” with the price of membership costing a mere one guinea, that’s $2.10, at the time.

But while the Club saw about 800 men join as members over the first 70 years since its inception, today there are now almost 30,000 members, both male and female.

Similarly in that time frame, while there were only about 24 employees, now the Club has almost 300 employees.

Between 1935 and 1978, the Club was affiliated with the Wool Exchange which was part of the premises and this assisted the Club through regular wool sales helping it survive the Depression.

Up until 1916, the building was lit by gas chandeliers and hurricane lamps before council became an electricity supplier to which the Club was among its first customers.

A new manager was appointed in 1972, breathing a new era into the Club. The manager’s name was Bruce Duck, who saw a succession of presidents and boards with vision for a promising future for the Club.

The Club was also well recognised for fitting Albury’s first poker machine, constructing two elevated

Albury’s Commercial Club - then and now. bowling greens, and building a the first multi-level car park on the Border.

For 68 years the Club had 10 poker machines on site - now it has about 630!

The Commercial Club today offers a variety of different activities and de-

livers its customers top quality, affordable and modern dining areas.

It provides a bistro open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and cafe open seven days from 8am for breakfast.

The Club isn’t short of live music,

dance and jazz either, providing free entertainment every Wednesday to Sunday.

Fantastic upbeat stage shows are featured monthly and conference and banquet facilities consist of 14 rooms.

There are function rooms that can

cater to up to 500 guests if an event or occasion calls for it with supporting facilities to ensure it runs perfectly.

Five Ways to win

Sourced: ALBURYCITY Range was renamed ‘Lavington’ with the intention that the name was more “identifiable”, as there were many regions called Black Range within Australia at that time.

“It wasn’t the only Black Range in the area, in fact there were quite a few, but you couldn’t distinguish one from the other as there were no postcodes and so it was then renamed to Lavington,” Ms McGrath said.

“But also, they used to be able to look up at the hills from the five-ways and saw that they were dark, that’s why they called it the Black Range.”

The Five Ways in Lavington has been an integral part of the community since the 1950s, and has seen many changes.

This main intersection came about with the invention of the motor car, according to Bruce Pennay, Heritage and History consultant and Charles Sturt University professor.

“Prior to that, to get from Lavington to Albury was via the old Sydney Road, which came through Borella Road,” Prof Pennay said.

“When the Hume Dam was built in the 1930s, it meant they had to do away with the old Sydney Road which we now know as Wagga Road and Mate Street.”

In 1961, the roundabout at the Five Ways was completed, and 1962 then saw the amalgamation of Lavington with Albury when Hume Shire handed Lavington over.

Mr Pennay said it was the pub that helped establish the corner of the Five Ways with other businesses having eventually established around it.

The iconic Five Ways at Lavington became Albury’s centre of gravity as evidently shown in the 2011 Census.

The data showed that the percentage of Albury residents in relation to the Five Ways was equivalent to north (49.3 per cent), south (51.6 per cent), east (50.1 per cent) and west (48.9 per cent).

“The Five Ways is the centre point of Albury,” Mr Pennay said.

“It is little wonder that Woolworths and Coles anchor a major shopping centre close by.”

WHEN the Lavington township began to form in the 1850s, it was originally known as the ‘Black Range’ due to the dark colour of the hills that surrounded it.

It was first established as a precinct for mining gold, which was then followed by orchards and silk worm farming, until it was realised that the insufficient supply of water in the area caused the industries to constantly struggle.

Lavington and District Family History Society president Lillian McGrath said water was a “major” issue in the area in the 19th century up until the middle of the 20th century.

“There were so many orchards established in the Black Range, but unfortunately they were dependent on water and water was very erratic back then,” Ms McGrath said.

“Water had to be brought out from Albury or the river if it was needed, so it was always going to be a problem before the Hume Dam was built.”

The prospect of water connection in the area wasn’t requested until 1949, so the orchards gradually diminished. It was in 1952 that the connection was introduced and water was freely available.

According to Ms McGrath, many colourful pioneers were known to live in the area including those by the names of Buchhorn, Schneider, Zerbst and Collins who were among the few who owned orchards full of peaches and apples.

In 1906, Hume Shire Council had formed, encompassing the Black Range precinct which had at the time increased its population to 1300.

Slow start for a boom town

Wodonga in a wired world WODONGA’S business community is in the midst of change as local businesspeople and entrepreneurs look towards the shifting dynamics of the exciting business world.

Wodonga Chamber of Commerce business manager Bernie Squire said Wodonga was seeing a growing number of “digital” businesses popping up as entrepreneurs and businesspeople began to understand the opportunities offered online.

“We are seeing quite an increase in forwardlooking, tech-savvy type businesses around,” Mr Squire said.

“Wodonga’s business community is beginning to realise that the world is moving more and more towards the digital era and is much more connected to the internet now - which is a completely different model.”

Mr Squire said businesspeople had become more adventurous with trying out new business concepts.

“It’s a worldwide trend where people are coming up with new innovative ideas and are much more prepared to fail and then try something else.

“They are willing to test their model and find out whether within three to six months it’s promising or not, and if it isn’t they’ll move on and try something new.

He said that the types of ‘brick and mortar’ businesses that were popping up in the precinct had remained ‘service orientated’.

“What I’ve noticed happening in Wodonga is that the kind of businesses currently in town are the service orientated businesses.

“They provide things like food and beverages such as cafes and restaurants, that kind of one-onone service you can’t get online.”

WODONGA had its first settlement in 1839 but the township began to really flourish from 1854 onwards.

In the year 1860, Wodonga saw the opening of the first bridge across the Murray River to its twin city Albury, which eventually led to further growth and development in the area.

The Wodonga Shire was formed in 1876 when the Colonial Government agreed to ratepayers’ petitions to have their area severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality - the Shire of Wodonga.

It wasn’t until 1994 that the Wodonga Rural City Council was established.

According to Heritage and Historian and CSU professor Bruce Pennay, both the army quarters in Bandiana and Bonegilla were what lead to the exponential growth of the population of Wodonga in the earlier days.

“Wodonga really grew as an army depot and benefitted most from the establishment of army bases in Bandiana and Bonegilla,” he said.

“In the early days they really poured a lot of money into the area and had many army people living there.

“This fuelled the growth in Wodonga and then following that, part of the army camp was turned into a migrant camp.”

Wodonga was initially regarded as the smaller and less prosperous of the two cities but while it was still a smaller city than Albury, economic

growth in both of the cities over time diminished such distinctions.

In 1973, a meeting between the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and the NSW and Victoria premiers saw both Albury and Wodonga being established as a growth centre with a plan to develop the area quickly in accordance with modern planning principles.

The growth centre was an ambitious attempt to create another ‘Canberra’ between Sydney and Melbourne and an experiment in ‘selective decentralisation’ to influence a pattern of urban settlement.

Mr Pennay said the governments directed much funding into the Albury-Wodonga growth centre between 1973 and 1989.

“The state governments poured

“The river was important to the growth of the area as it was a junction point for both the states and also the rail that crossed the two states.

“The railway came to Wodonga in 1873 and this connected Albury to Melbourne and made it orientate the spirit of progress through its contact with Melbourne.”

Currently Wodonga’s population sits at around 37,500 people and by 2013 together with Albury the Border formed an area with approximately 90,000 people.

Wodonga is currently the fastest growing regional city in Victoria, with the population forecasted to increase to around 58,000 by 2036.

“It’s rather amazing the blending together of the two cities that came about through the development of industrial and commercial corporations.”

By Monique Kuzeff WRITE Around the Murray brought to the Border many well-known authors, journalists and illustrators as part of the festival this year - and awardwinning children’s author Jackie French was no exception.

Jackie attended various workshops, discussions and lunches throughout the week between 7 and 11 September, including reading her book ‘Diary of a Wombat’ to a room full of primary school students.

“I always feel terror before I speak to an audience,” Ms French said.

“I suppose I should say that it’s exciting and thrilling and what have you, but it is one of terror of feeling an incredibly deep sense of responsibility in giving the kids what they want and what they need.”

But last Friday was also an eventful day for Jackie, who received an honorary membership from the NSW Murray Group Country Women’s Association (CWA) who dropped by the LibraryMuseum to hand her the award.

The award comes as part of CWA’s annual awareness week, which conveniently coincided with the WAM festival in Albury that Jackie attended.

“I’m incredibly honoured to have received this membership as I truly admire the CWA,” Jackie told NewsWeekly.

“The CWA has always been a deep lobbying group for the welfare of Australian regional families,” Jackie said.

“It’s extraordinary to be given this honorary membership.”

CWA NSW Murray Group president Genevieve Knobel said Jackie was a “prominent person” who was interested in engaging more with regional and rural areas that might have limited internet access, which impacted on educational opportunities for children.

“Jackie has done so much with her work with children’s books and we believe she was worthy of receiving this award,” Ms Knobel said.

“Being a high-profile author we hoped that she would carry some weight with our organisation as well.”

On the topic of the NBN rollout, Jackie said that if Australia was to gain stronger economic benefits a “faster” and “better” rollout of the NBN was needed.

“If we are ever going to become a clever country, if we are going to have the innovation that we need for a new economy, we need decent Wi-Fi,” she said.

“These days ... a regional child can dream of any profession they want to, but only if there is the connectivity.

“Having a faster and better rollout is not only going to be cheaper, but within a five to 20year period the economic benefit to Australia will be so massive.”

The children’s author was pleased to have had the opportunity to be involved in Write Around the Murray, saying it had been “complete and utter magic”.

“The diversity of this festival is so impressive and one of the advantages of events like this is that everyone can get to them and get involved.”

10 years of kid protection

By Monique Kuzeff ALBURY celebrated its 10th annual White Balloon Day in QEII Square last Friday as a crowd gathered in the city park to raise awareness and take a stand against child sexual abuse on the Border.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of White Balloon Day nationwide, which aims to help educate, protect and raise awareness on the serious and detrimental issue of child sexual abuse that occurs in communities right across the country.

Henk van de Ven said.

“It’s been a subject for a long time and what we are trying to say to the victims is that it is okay to speak up.

“There’s support agencies that can help you deal with the repercussions of having been sexually abused as a child.”

AlburyCity Youth and Development officer Amanda Wilson said White Ribbon Day in Albury brings local support service together to provide support and information to the community.

According to the Australian Children Foundation one in three women and one in six men have experienced some form of sexual abuse by the age of 18.

Shockingly, in 95 per cent of the cases the abuse was perpetrated by someone known to the child.

Over 500 balloons were tied up throughout Albury CBD to further highlight that symbol and message of the White Balloon Day. “If this has been going on for a long time, there are a lot of people out there who have been victims,” Albury mayor

“AlburyCity will continue to support the event because it brings service providers together and not only that but it provides vital information around the issues,” Ms Wilson said.

Those who participated in the celebration were encouraged to wear white and released white balloons which symbolised the support for the victims who have been impacted by child sexual abuse.

“We want to bring young people to be part of the event as well,” she said.

“While they may not have been impacted themselves they might have

a friend who they can support and encourage them to utilise the services available.

“It helps to break down the barriers that surround the very real issue of child sexual abuse.”

Alongside promoting the available support agencies, artist Josh Quinn put on a live acoustic performance.

Local support agencies that attended the event included the Aboriginal Health Service, Mission Australia and Family and Community Services NSW.

Crime is on the way down, and that’s official

By Monique Kuzeff FIFTEEN of the 17 major state-wide crime offences have either remained constant or dropped in trend, the recently released quarterly crime statistics show.

Nine crime categories show a downward trend, those being murder (down 32.1 per cent), robbery without weapon (down 25.9 per cent), robbery with a firearm (down 41.7 per cent), robbery with a weapon not a firearm (down 22.2 per cent), break and enter dwelling (down 7.2 per cent), motor vehicle theft (down 12.6 per cent),

Albury MP Greg Aplin said the good results across the state were in large part due to pro-active police work.

“Similarly police in the Albury community work tirelessly to detect and prevent crime,” Mr Aplin said.

“I’m pleased to see the overall results and thank the community for doing their bit by reporting crime and remaining vigilant - it is so helpful for our police.”

Locally, major crime categories recorded downward trends, with one upward.

Jetgo is all go

By Monique Kuzeff WHEN Jetgo launched its jet service from Albury to Brisbane on 20 June it had planned to increase its sevice from four to six days a week, if the demand called for it.

In the first 12 weeks Albury Airport’s new airline saw over 3000 people fly in the 36-seat aircraft that takes under two hours to get to and from Brisbane.

Such “overwhelming� response pushed the airline to announce it would now fly the jet service on Tuesdays and Thursdays along with the existing Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday flights from 1 November.

Jetgo’s managing director Paul Bredereck said the Albury market had proven to be “stronger� than the airline expected. “We always expected the service would be popular, however the uptake has far exceeded our expectations,� Mr Bredereck said. “It turned out to achieve its potential quicker than what we originally forecasted so we absolutely believe the route warrants the extra services."

Mr Bredereck said business and family connectivity had been one of the major drivers for the demand of the service in recent months. “A lot of people that may have only done the trek to Brisbane once or twice a year are now taking advantage of the service and are now travelling to and fro more frequently. “I think the market has been hanging out for the service for quite some time as the community was strongly conveying that message to the Albury City Council."

Death after fall at school

By Monique Kuzeff A YOUNG boy’s life ended sadly in the week when he suffered a fatal head injury after an accident at his primary school in Wodonga.

The five-year-old fell down the external stairs at Wodonga South Primary School, part of the Southern Rise Education Centre, about 4.30pm on Tuesday 6 September.

The boy was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Albury Hospital where he reportedly died shortly after, having suffered a cardiac arrest.

Wodonga South Primary School principal Clint Eckhardt released a statement on Wednesday morning saying his thoughts were with the student’s family, friends and classmates. “I’m deeply saddened to confirm that we lost one of our youngest students this week in a tragic accident,� he said. “This news has had a profound

impact on many students, staff and families, and I know that our community will band together and support each other throughout this time.�

Mr Eckhardt said there was support available for anyone at the school needing it which would continue throughout the week.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer told the NewsWeekly that police would undertake a further investigation into the accident and prepare a report for the coroner. “At this point we don’t believe the accident to be suspicious,� he said. “(The boy’s family is) still in a lot of grief but are getting the support they need at best we can. “These investigations are tough especially when it involves kids, but it certainly has had an impact on emergency services.�

The Victorian Department of Education will also investigate.

People power is shown in silence

By Monique Kuzeff A SMALL group of Border locals hope to bring together 100 people in QEII Square on 21 September to celebrate World Peace Day through Gathering for Peace a 20-minute “silent peace meditation”.

The group of about 16 participants has been doing monthly peace mediations in the early morning on the 21st day of each month throughout winter while the atmosphere is quiet and tranquil.

The meditation sessions are free to anyone who is interested in joining and requires no prior knowledge or skill of meditation practices.

Hypnotherapist and group meditation participant Karen Seinor said World Peace Day was important because it enabled people to stop for a moment in their busy lives and use the silence as a “point of focus”.

“We are all busy fumbling along doing our daily things, but it’s important to have a moment in silence,” Ms Seinor said.

“It can have a huge impact on physiology, psychology, mentality and emotional wellbeing.

“On World Peace Day people are joining their consciousness together beyond the community and changing

a mindset in the world.”

In addition to the mental wellbeing benefits of the “group peace meditations”, Ms Seinor said research also shows that meditation may reduce violent crime levels in communities where it has been held.

According to researchers from Harvard University as reported by Makiko Kitamura in Bloomberg, meditation causes changes at a “cellular level”.

After just one session of particular meditation in the study they found genes that produce insulin were stimulated, while those that were attributed to stress and inflammation were weakened.

Ms Seinor said meditation also puts people in a position of “power” where they then feel empowered within themselves.

“When we actively do something to create what we want, it puts us in a position of power,” she said.

“We are literally making a change within us and we begin to feel more peaceful and relaxed.”

Rotarians are kind on the palate

ROTARY Clubs across the Border and district don’t just stop at helping one project but are always trying to find new projects to get involved in to help raise awareness and money for.

Operation Cleft was added to the list this year to Rotary Clubs on the Border with Peter Lee, Rotary Club of Albury Hume member, asked to step up as regional ambassador for the project.

Since hopping on board in June, Mr Lee has already spoken to 10 clubs and receiving a supportive response from the clubs who have all made a donation towards Operation Cleft.

“I’ve been going around to the clubs upon their invitation and talking to them about the project - what it’s about, how it started, what it does, where it originated,” Mr Lee said.

“We’ve had an absolutely fantastic response from them all who have put some money towards it.”

Operation Cleft began in 2005 as a club project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central after a presentation by Colin Macfarlane AM got the Box Hill Central club to sponsor 60 cleft repair operations confined to Bangladesh.

The first operation was done to a young girl, Lija, and the difference of the before and after image of her lips inspired the club to take on board the project for the long run.

With one operation costing $300 and almost one-third of the population in Bangla-

desh living below the poverty line, a child born with a cleft lip or palate is not likely to get the surgery they need.

Mr Lee said that children with cleft palates would often experience malnutrition, speech difficulties and bullying.

“The real problem there is that the children can become seriously malnourished as a result of the cleft palate,” he said.

“Often you get the cleft palate which is the roof of the mouth open, exposing the nasal passages so when they try to eat and drink the food comes back down through the nose again.”

Upon the inception of Operation Cleft, Rotary Club of Box Hill Central brought over a group of eight Bangladeshi surgeons to Australia where they then undertook training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to perform cleft palate operations to satisfactory Australian accreditation before returning to Bangladesh.

Mr Lee said together with the Rotary Clubs the project had already brought in about $5000 which was well on its way to reaching the year target of $6000.

“Being involved in this project has been absolutely rewarding.

“To see a face that was deformed to seeing how the operation finishes up, you can hardly even see the scar marks.”

Over the 10 years Operation Cleft has been running, the eight surgeons have performed over 10,000 cleft repair operations in Bangladesh.

“We are always after carers whether it be for short-term, long-term or emergency,” she said.

“We may have 106 but some of those carers only do respite, some of them already do longterm fostering, some of those are sick or on holiday or on hold for a certain reason - we always welcome more carers.”

By Monique Kuzeff VOLUNTEER foster carers from across the Border and surrounding region were acknowledged and celebrated by Upper Murray Family Care (UMFC) on Monday at an afternoon tea at Art Space Wodonga.

UMFC acknowledged its 106 carers for the amazing work they do as part of Foster Carer Week, which runs from 11-17 September.

A video presentation was also put on showcasing the stories of some of the UMFC’s carers and their experience volunteering for the not-for-profit organisation.

UMFC Foster Carer recruitment officer Jeanine Aughey said the 106 volunteer carers were spread throughout the region including Corryong, Yarrawonga, Mansfield and Benella.

“We want to acknowledge that the carers really do make a difference to these kids' lives,” Ms Aughey said.

“They can provide them with stability, love and the opportunity to meet their potential.

“These people do it because they want to do it, so it’s a great way to celebrate their kindness.”

While the organisation currently has 106 active foster carers, they are receiving about 41 referrals for carers every month.

“Requirements include police checks, working with children checks and you have to attend training and do an assessment but we work people through that, it can take as long as it needs to.

“Some people might care on one weekend a month, others might do emergency placements and others might do longer-term.”

UMFC has a partnership with the Australian Childhood Foundation which provides carers with support and further information on foster caring.

Sun shines on kids’ fun KINROSS Woolshed hosted the Sunshine Family Fun Day on Sunday 11 September to celebrate Sunshine Week on the Border.

Families gathered at the iconic pub for an afternoon of kids’ entertainment including jumping castles, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, balloon sculpting, art and craft activities and also a performance from Steve Bowen.

The afternoon also featured live music from Danny Phegan and Longreach, and former Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton.

But that wasn’t all. A captivating fireworks

display was put on at the end of the show.

The event was made possible through Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) Trust Fund Committee.

All of the money raised on the day will stay locally and will go towards supporting the AWRCC. The cash will go towards purchasing lifesaving cancer equipment, supporting cancer research, assisting expert medical personnel with training in the latest cancer technologies and funding the dedicated children’s treatment space and Wellness Centre at the AWRCC.

Kicking the nicotine habit MOST smokers are experts at how to stop smoking because they have done it so many times.

Despite their best intentions and sincere efforts, the pull of cigarettes and nicotine is just too strong. Eventually, they go back to smoking cigarettes and the cycle of addiction begins all over again.

Cigarettes contain nicotine which is proven to be an addictive drug. The body becomes dependent on nicotine, and when it doesn’t get enough it experiences unpleasant symptoms of withdrawal. In addition to the physical addiction, there is also a powerful mental component to cigarette addiction as well.

The mind associates smoking cigarettes with pleasant feelings such as relaxation, reward or stress relief. There is also a strong social pull with cigarette addiction because many people associate smoking with the social situations in which they typically like to smoke. - Most smokers who quit have to try at least two or three times before being successful. Only 6 per cent of people who try to quit using willpower alone will succeed; Using a nicotine patch or gum increases the success rate to 12 per cent; Overall, only 2.5 per cent of all smokers are successful at quitting each year; Studies show that hypnotherapy is one of the most suc-

cessful tools for quitting smoking.

That last fact is important because there are some very good reasons why advanced hypnotherapy, especially when used in combination with NLP, has an excellent success rate at helping people to quit smoking, high as 95 per cent.

NLP and hypnotherapy work with the mind to help overcome the physical and mental aspects of cigarette addiction. NLP works with the conscious mind to teach patterns of thought that lead to new patterns of more desirable behaviour. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, works with the unconscious mind to resolve deeper issues such as

stress and the desire for reward.

Another interesting thing to consider is that people who use NLP and hypnotherapy tend to experience fewer, and sometimes even none, of the typical nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

While nobody can say for sure why this is the case, it has been observed in our clients many, many times. There is no doubt that when used together, these techniques are the most powerful way to attack cigarette addiction and get rid of it for good.

OUR local Carevan Foundation hosted its first major fundraiser of the year in August, The Corporate Sleepout, and is now challenging itself to its second major fund-raiser the “Carevan Community Challenge” to be held on 25 September.

The Carevan Community Challenge will be held in memory of volunteer Marg Fisher who sadly passed away in 2012.

She was a committed mother of three who had volunteered with the charity since its inception, and was always a great supporter of Carevan’s annual ride.

This will go forth as the inaugural fun run/walk fundraiser event for Carevan, which

hopes to see the involvement of over 200 participants to help raise a minimum of $5000 to go one hundred per cent back in to the initiative.

The event encompasses a choice of a 5km ($30) or 10km ($35) walk or run, with a fee of $15 for entrants 15 years and younger.

A professional sports event organiser will be hosting the event to ensure that the day runs smoothly and that all professional and non-professional participants are able to be manually timed at their attempt.

Not only is this event about raising funds for a great cause and challenging yourself, but it also aims to raise social awareness of homelessness in our community.

Carevan founder John Brabant said the Carevan Community Challenge came as a “social awareness” and “inclusion” fund-raiser to help prompt “social change”.

He also said the event tied in well with one of the “key messages” of the initiative.

“Carevan highly encourages good nutrition and health, teaching those on the street and in the schools about how to sustain that,” Dr Brabant said.

“An activity event such as the Carevan Community Challenge ties in with our general health concept.”

Mighty Motown DIRECT from the US comes the encore Australian tour by “Songs in the Key of Motown", a live concert production that takes you on a journey through Motown.

Having spent seven stellar years re-creating the sound and style of The Four Tops in Las Vegas’s multi-million dollar production shows “American Superstars" and “Legends in Concert", the group has developed the versatility to credibly cover the music of groups from The Platters to The Temptations to Boys 2 Men. Local Sport Four decades in the making THE Magpies division one men’s hockey team has broken one of the longest droughts in Albury Wodonga sport taking out the premiership in a hard-fought game in the weekend.

The win over United 3-2 is the first Albury Wodonga Hockey men’s division one title for the club in 37 years.

Jeremy Maggs lead the way for the Magpies as they finally broke their grand final hoodoo.

The women’s A grade title went to Norths which out-played United to take the title 3-0 with Nan Latta taking out best on ground.

The division two men’s title went to United 4-1 over the Falcons while the division two women’s title went to Norths 4-2 over United.

United claimed the division three women’s title beating Beechworth 8-0 while division three men was won by Norths which also defeated Beechworth, 3-1.

Hockey co-ordinator Cayte Campbell said the Magpies’ victory was one of the highlights of an exciting weekend of hockey which saw three clubs dominate winning four titles each while the Magpies took one - but it was the one they had been chasing.

She said United had made it through to the grand final weekend in nine out of the 13 finals but it was the Wombats who had come up with the most impressive statistic of the weekend.

The club only had four teams make it into the finals this year across the grades but all four made and then won their titles, taking out the 15 boys, 16 girls, 14 boys and 12-years boys titles in most cases, quite decisively.

Cayte said the weekend, the culmination of a good season despite having less teams than last year, went off well after a soggy start.

“We had considered calling it off after Friday night but we kept checking the BOM,” she said.

And while it was overcast for the rest of the weekend, it was nothing like Friday’s rain allowing games to go ahead with good crowds on-hand to watch the action.

However she said the weekend ran smoothly with no melees or dramas thanks to a high standard of umpiring across the four days of the finals.

The hockey focus now turns to representative teams in the next week and then to the three-week eights competition over the final three weeks in October.

Marathon cash prize running with Soldier On bravery THERE will be a large cash purse for the 2016 Tallangatta Half Marathon which comes as part of the Tallangatta Running Festival held on Sunday 18 Septemeber.

The Tallangatta Half Marathon with unprecedented $3000 cash on the line for the course records.

A total of $2000 is up for grabs in the male division as the course record still stands from 2014, with $1000 for the female course record which was reset in 2015.

If unbroken the course records climb by $1000 each year.

The Tallangatta Running Festival will again provide a number of running events for the whole family from 2km to half marathon 21.1km as well as the fantastic spectacle of the Tallangatta Strong Man/Woman event to be held in the town centre on the day.

Along with market stalls, the town is predicting a festival atmosphere.

This year also saw the Tallangatta Running Festival, sponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Branch of the Bendigo Bank, supporting its nominated charity Soldier On. Soldier On provides services and support for returned military personnel.

With such a large population of military personnel in the region, all current serving members of the Australian Defence Force that register and participate in the Tallangatta Half Marathon will have their entry fee donated directly to Soldier On. Organisers are proud to be providing this type of support to the members of military and hope to see a large contingent trying the half marathon distance.
