Hooked for life By Russell Bennett MARK Ratchford and his sister Pakenham’s Leatrice Shipsides - sure know how to make one hell of a splash. Mark took off from the Melbourne Boat Show in June to circumnavigate Australia - more than 16,500 kilometres - and fish as he goes, raising muchneeded funds for the Cancer Council before returning later this year. His aim - through his organisation Fish For Life and its organising committee - is to raise between $500,000 and $1,000,000. Leatrice has a professional marketing background, which she has harnessed to lead a team of workers at Pakenham Living and Learning. Their role is to provide logistical and organisational support for the mission, which spans seven capital cities across the country. But she has cast her net far wider. A Pakenham Kids Fun Fishing Day will be held on 18 September at the Lakeside Lake from 10am to 4pm - run by Fish For Life, a not-for-profit organisation with a goal to educate and teach the next generations of Australians how to fish. “It’s important that our children are aware and understand all about the sustainability of fish and sea life in our waterways,” said Leatrice, the charity event manager, who with her offsider Nicole Brown has singlehandedly organised the local community event. Leatrice and Nicole have been working around the clock to make sure that the children have a fulfilled day. They have organised face painters, Rotary will be running a sausage sizzle, and spray-on tattoo artists will be stencilling fish themes.

Owner foils early morning robbery

THEY arrived with an empty trailer and left with one. Unknown male offenders entered a garage and rear yard in Barak Avenue, Berwick on Wednesday 31 August, about 6.30am, before they disrupted an occupant of the house. The offenders forced the garage roller door before forcing entry to an internal door to the house. The victim has disturbed two, possibly three unknown males and they left in a dark coloured Mazda 6 sedan towing a box trailer. Nothing appears to have been stolen and police were given no descriptions of the offenders. The first male is described as having an obese build, wearing a light blue coloured hooded ‘Adidas’ branded jumper with his face covered, and black shorts and gloves. The second male had an average build and height and was wearing a dark coloured jumper and cap. Images have been released from CCTV to assist in the police investigation.

Hot rod goes up in shed blaze

A HOT rod has been destroyed in a shed fire in Bridge Walk, Narre Warren North. Four Hallam and Narre Warren CFA, as well as police officers and paramedics, responded to the blaze, about 1.40am. It took more than 40 minutes to bring the nonsuspicious fire under control. It was contained to the shed, which was detached from the house. CFA District 8 Rostered Duty Officer Michel Hembrow said lithium ion batteries left charging in the shed were a fire risk. “Some lithium ion batteries are prone to overheating, so while we haven’t confirmed the cause of this incident yet, it’s possible the batteries contributed,” Mr Hembrow said. “We remind our community to be vigilant when charging and using these batteries because the cheaper ones in particular can be fire hazards. “We’re noticing fires started by these batteries are becoming more common.” CFA and Victoria Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

HAMPTON Park’s home of the wildly popular sensation ‘mega shakes’ could be set to explode into a national - and even international franchise, says its owner and director Steven Richard. In recent weeks, Sugar Buns bakery cafe has drawn long queues of customers from interstate and across town since it relaunched its menu with lavish and spectacular milk shakes. In response, the cafe - buzzing with 30 staff - now occupies the double-storey retail space next door, more than doubling its capacity, Mr Richard says. Despite trying to scale back on social media, the cafe’s Instagram followers total 13,000, its Facebook likes about 21,000. Sugar Buns has placed bollards outside its shop to herd the lines of waiting customers that have run 50 metres deep. Mr Richard, born and raised in Dandenong, is in no doubt the ‘mega shakes’ are the most popular of their kind in Australia. On average, Sugar Buns create a staggering 700 mega shakes a day, including the ‘chocoholic’, ‘candyland’, ‘salted caramel’ and ‘strawberry shortcake’. His closest national competition might make 20 in an hour.

I made the mega shakes so people feel they’re getting value for money and leaving here completely satisfied.” Mr Richard is now being chased by international franchises and national shopping centres. “The interest has been huge. They tell me the amount of traffic you bring to (Hampton Park) shopping centre, we need you here.” He says he’s ready for the next challenge - to maintain the standard

across a number of franchises. “I’m ready to spend the effort. I’m ready to go.” Mr Richard is loving his 90-hour week at the cafe, even savouring the long drive from Preston each day. Mr Richard had set up at Hampton Park shopping centre to be close to his parents Lucille and Burty’s 25-year-old business Lucy’s Divine Cakes and his brother Didier’s Heroes Burger Diner. When he launched the cafe three years ago, he was told it would never work. His prospective coffee supplier told him he’d be lucky to serve five

kilograms of coffee a week, and refused to stock their coffee at this cafe. The cafe now has its own specially roasted blend, and Mr Richard has vowed never to use that former coffee supplier again. “One person told me you’ve changed Hampton Park to Hampton On the Park,” Mr Richard said. Mr Richard insists it’s not just the food that’s drawing crowds - one family even flying in from Tasmania for the day after seeing a national TV news story. It’s the buzzy atmosphere, attention to detail and an enthusiastic staff that he teaches to “make a difference”. “Part of my journey is to inspire the uninspired.” He said the seemingly overnight success had been built on 12 years in the industry as a cafe developer and investor in about 50 different stores around Melbourne. Ambitiously, Mr Richard started as an 18 year old jointly involved in a cafe in Pakenham. It forced him to grow up quickly, he says. It’s helping him to handle his new-found fame, such as being stopped in a Queensland street for his autograph. “I’ve donated my life to hospitality, now my phone won’t stop ringing.” Dine Local Eat Global page 43.

A world away, a local lead turns up best man By Georgia Westgarth THE News solved a mystery months in the making and oceans apart. On 3 September, 1966, David Avakian married the love of his life, and recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. But one vital part of his anniversary celebration day was missing his best man. David, who now resides in Westminster, Maryland, in the US, contacted the News in hope of reconnecting with his best man, Steve Fansler. “As we age, it seems, we become wiser in that we can more clearly see the value of friendships - both new and old,” David told the News. “Our lives are enriched by our friends and losing track of old friends diminishes one’s life. “As we recall the significant times in our past - we really needed to reconnect with Steve and his wife Pat.” David had been searching for Steve on and off for a year. David googled Steve’s name which brought up a letter Steve had sent into the News. “I contacted you thinking that you might have a recent email or

Youth crime penalties By Aneeka Simonis NEW carjacking and home invasion legislation intends for more alleged offenders to be refused bail and, if convicted, serve longer jail terms as part of the state’s crackdown on scaling violent youth crimes. However, youths who are released on bail would still free to run amok under current legislation which fails to punish under-18s for breaching bail conditions. Anyone convicted of aggravated home invasion or aggravated carjacking will face at least three years in jail. Carjacking will carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and those convicted of aggravated carjacking face a maximum penalty of 25 years. Home invasion will have a maximum penalty of 25 years and aggravated home invasion. The legislation includes a ‘presumption against bail’, meaning those accused will need to justify why they should not be remanded.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said the legislation responded to growing community fear relating the young gang crimes, particularly in the south-east. “The community expects that police will have the powers and resources they need to target these criminals - and that’s exactly what we’re giving them,” she said. The legislation was introduced on Wednesday 31 August - the same day the Opposition debated its carjacking Bill introduced in June. Shadow Police and Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue said the government’s policy wasn’t tough enough. The Opposition's Bill sets out a minimum five-year jail term for aggravated carjacking offenders and three years for carjacking offenders. Mr O’Donohue said his party’s Bill didn’t make specifications on bail, but believed a crackdown on minimum sentencing will lead to an increase in remands. “Because of the strong statutory minimum, we believe it will send a strong

message to the court about the severity of the offence and that would reflect in the way the court (dealt with the matter),” he said. The State Government’s tough crackdown on youth-driven crimes flies in the face of lax bail laws introduced earlier this year. Minors who breach their bail conditions will now no longer attract further criminal charges. The laws were changed in May to address the increasing numbers of young people on remand in juvenile detention centres. The mum of a 16-year-old serious criminal offender from Pakenham blamed soft bail legislation for the quick unravelling of her son. She said her boy had stolen cars and invaded homes - and that was all after he was charged with robbery and released on strict bail conditions including a nightly curfew. “He says, ‘Why should I stay? Quackers dash to save ducklings By Alana Mitchelson A NEW Pakenham family has helped rescue 10 ducklings and a mother duck after a car scare dispersed the startled birds in all directions. Pakenham resident Bernie Fisher was sitting in his lounge room watching television on the afternoon of Tuesday 6 September when he caught sight of a car braking suddenly outside the front of his house. As it turned out, the car had stopped so as not to hit a duck and her ducklings walking across Duncan Drive from the B. J. Wallis Gardens. “I went out to have a look and straight away I was concerned because they took off and were headed in the wrong direction. “Instead of going towards the park, they were headed for the road and the railway line, and the mother duck was just frantic,” Mr Fisher said. “On top of that, the crows were circling and I couldn’t help but think that this mummy’s gotta say goodbye to her poor little ducklings. “But then they all came back onto my side of the road and got into the neighbours’ backyards. I straight away thought that I had to try to round them all up.” Meanwhile, the five Martin siblings - Jezreel, Mileke, Xenobia, Acacia and Saffron, who are aged between four and 15 - had been playing with friends at a nearby property and after seeing Mr Fisher struggling to catch the ducks, they took over the pursuit. They began herding them up and sought permission from neighbours to chase the ducklings through about four backyards.

The Martins were all smiles after they rescued the 10 ducklings. 158984 At one point, they were concerned for two of the ducklings’ safety as the birds had taken off into a property whose owners were not home and a dog could be heard barking in the property. But fortunately all ducklings, as well as the mother duck, were accounted for after the 20-minute ordeal was over. “At first I was concerned the kids would cause trouble but they were very

gentle. They stayed very calm and didn’t get too overexcited,” Mr Fisher said. “They caught them all without hurting any of them. There’s no way in the world I would have been able to catch all those ducklings because they were just too fast. It was so unbelievable how helpful these kids were, I really didn’t expect it.” The Martins and Mr Fisher collected the ducklings into a large plastic box and

They jumped into the pond and swam across to join up with their mummy,” he said. “It was a lot of excitement and it all happened quite quickly. At the end, everyone was happy and smiling. “I was very proud of how quickly and responsibly these kids reacted.”

Three-time speedster detected A PAKENHAM man’s car was impounded after being caught speeding three times up to 50km/h over the limit in the space of a few hours. Police intercepted a silver Ford XR8 ute after the 40-year-old driver was caught travelling at 114km/h in a 100km zone about 8.20am on Saturday 3 September along the Princes Freeway, Pakenham. He was issued an infringement notice for $311 and received three demerit points. But a short time later the same highway patrol members caught the man speeding at 119km/h in a 100km/h zone on Nar Nar Goon Longwarry Road, Garfield. The man was again issued an infringement notice for $311 and received a further three demerit points. While the police remained present at the scene, the Pakenham man sped off and was detected travelling 134km/h in an 80km zone near the Garfield township. Police pulled the man over for the third time that day, impounding the ute for 30 days at a cost of $1060 for its release. Cardinia Highway Patrol Sergeant Rob Atkinson said it was one of the worst cases of disregard for the speed limits he has seen in 18 years of policing. “Most people would have slowed down after receiving the first infringement notice but to be caught again less than three hours later is rarely heard of,” Sgt Atkinson said. “Travelling at speeds of 134km/h and heading into a 60km zone while still in police presence shows that he has no regard for his own safety or for the safety of other motorists travelling on the roads.” The man was expected to be charged on summons for driving at dangerous speeds and for driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit. It is also expected he would lose his licence for 12 months.

A FINANCIAL counsellor will soon be helping family violence victims and survivors in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. Recruitment and training is underway for 10 new, full-time counsellors specialising in financial abuse to be placed in agencies across Victoria, Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz announced on Tuesday 6 September. They’ll negotiate with creditors and debt collectors to help those in abusive relationships to protect assets from repossession and access financial hardship programs. Existing financial counsellors will also receive financial abuse training under the $1.75 million State Government project, and the cash will help utilities, telecommunications, finance companies and more to develop guidelines to respond to family violence and financial abuse. There will be the equivalent of one full-time specialist financial abuse counsellor working in the Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia region. All financial counsellors working at South East Community Links (SECL) in Springvale, which services the region, will have training in supporting victims of financial abuse. “Family violence takes many forms. These ground-breaking initiatives targeting financial abuse will go a long way to helping victims and those at risk,” Ms Kairouz said. “This is an Australian first. Financial counsellors specifically helping victims of family violence or financial abuse is a key response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission. “Specialised private and confidential counselling services will help financial abuse survivors and victims create a better life for themselves.”

SHAUN and Melinda Butler are two faces of what Casey council describes as an “on-going escalation” of home invasions in the municipality. The Berwick couple watched in the public gallery as the council voted unanimously at a special meeting on 1 September to continue lobbying for more police and other ramped-up law-and-order measures. The Butlers remain traumatised several months after burglars crept into their unlocked housing estate home early one morning as three children slept with open bedroom doors. The intruders stole phones, tablets, house and car keys - and then both cars. One of the recovered cars was crashed and written-off, the other attracted three red-light and speedcamera infringements. “We have lived there nine years. We never imagined this would be the last place this would happen,” Ms Butler said. “People say they sleep with keys under their pillow. I say don’t do it they’ll come find them.” Two weeks later, the burglars tried to break in again but were deterred by changed locks and a new security door. Two juveniles out of seven suspects were arrested. One of the teens - on bail at the time over charges of bashing an elderly couple - was then bailed again. His lawyer successfully argued for a more lenient night curfew so as to not interfere with the teen’s lovelife, Ms Butler bitterly recalls. The Butlers’ insurer refused to pay excess on the stolen vehicles because the offenders were juveniles. Mr Butler, medicated for a subsequent nervous breakdown, sleeps

Council fights gambling I AM writing in response to Mr Glazebrook’s letter (Deal With The Real Problem, Berwick and Cranbourne News, 1 September 2016) criticising council over electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in Casey. Through the City of Casey’s Electronic Gaming Machine Strategy 2015-2020, council has a long-term commitment to reducing the negative impacts of gambling from the operation of EGMs on the Casey community. Council frequently advocates to the State Government to reduce the incidence of problem gambling, including calling for a review of regional caps for EGMs and a Casey-wide cap to include our growth areas. We invite Mr Glazebrook to also advocate to the State Government. Councils have limited grounds to oppose applications for new or additional EGMs based on the social and economic Net Community Benefit test which is assessed by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) under the Gambling Regulation Act 2003. Council strongly discourages EGMs in suburbs where the EGM density is higher than the state average and does not support the operation of EGMs within or neighbouring a facility where the dominant activity focuses on children and young people. Council’s position is for no new machines in community areas of high social and economic disadvantage. Casey sits in the higher expenditure bracket of all Victorian LGAs due to its large adult population and the amount of EGMs per 1000 adults in Casey is actually lower than the state average. SQAUSHED, banged up and battered this Marriott Waters bird statue needs attention. A resident, who bought the block of land in Lyndhurst for one reason only - to look out her front window at these exact bird statues - is despairing at the sorry state of the statues. The woman, who asked the News not to publish her name, said the bird statues were designed and made by a Tasmanian artist as a focal point for the estate’s walking tracks and waterways. “The bird lay in the man-made waterways for about two and a half months, you could see half of it sticking out of the water,” she said. “After I made several complaints the bird was taken out of the water and dumped on the grassy embankment and stayed there for two weeks. “The same bird has fallen off its perch three times and it’s never been re-erected properly. “I have made countless calls to Marriott Waters who redirect me to Casey council, who

redirect me to South East Water and I’m sick of them passing the buck.” The bird now faces a different direction to what it did originally and its wings and body has collapsed inwards on itself. “It’s just a laughing stock. I bought this block of land and built this house because of the sculptures and now it looks like this.” LOCAL residents may not agree but VicRoads says that the $10.1m Sladen Street upgrade is progressing well with traffic scheduled to return to the westbound carriageway between the Cameron Street roundabout and High Street. VicRoads acting regional director Michael Barker said traffic will continue to operate in one lane each direction as works continue over the coming weeks. “Although we are in the final stages of the upgrade, the speed limit will continue to remain reduced as we complete the works,” Mr Barker said. “These works include finalising a new pedestrian crossing east of Codrington Street, installing new street lighting and completing landscaping. “Sladen Street between High Street and Cameron Street will also be resurfaced, including the roundabout and approaches at Cameron Street.” Weather permitting, the upgrade will be

complete in November. A CHILDREN’S Court was on red-alert after a 15-year-old boy was arrested for breaking his night curfew conditions while on bail. The magistrate told the court that the boy’s absconding coincided with the recent release of several Apex Gang-like associates from custody in the past two weeks. He then described his fears about the gang and the associated spate of violent carjackings, dangerous driving in stolen cars, and home invasions. “There is no Apex Gang, of course. It’s just a word thrown around but he’s associating with high-risk young people. “It’s referring to the type of offences they’re committing and the high volume of offences. “What sits behind it is if we don’t stop it, someone could be hurt (including) him.” THE bail application for a man coming down from marijuana use seemed to dissipate in haze. The man was asked by a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge why he should be released on bail. Representing himself, the man paused and said: “I can’t think at the minute.”

Pathways to work By Casey Neill FIND a passion and set goals were the top pieces of advice handed to Greater Dandenong and Casey students on Tuesday 6 September. The annual Lunch with the Winners at Sandown Racecourse featured Dr Jordan Nguyen as guest speaker, ‘winners’ Quintin Whitehead, Bianca Santos and Guillaume Nyakaboyi, and futurist Marcus Barber. SEBN manager Sandra George said the event’s aim was to show students the many pathways to employment. “We hope the guest speakers will inspire you, as next generation of leaders, to follow your dreams,” she said. The event was a partnership between SEBN and South East Local and Learning Employment Network (SELLEN). Ms George told students that key employability attributes included communication skills, getting along with others, a positive attitude, motivation, and being well-presented. “Leaving school with Year 12 or Certificate III gives you the best stepping stone to employment,” she said. “The employment market out here is very positive. “Manufacturing is still the largest employer, and it is growing out here. “Today, manufacturing is sophisticated, it requires you to take your brain to it and it requires diverse skills.” Dr Nguyen was “pretty lost through high school” and struggled through his first semester of electrical engineering studies at university.

Spending a day unable to move after hitting his head in a pool gave him a new direction. “I wondered what would have happened if I couldn’t walk,” he said. “Suddenly, I had purpose in my life.” Dr Nguyen decided to harness the power of the mind and created a wheelchair that tapped into electrical signals from the brain. Veterinary science inspired the chair’s horse-like vision that steers it around obstacles. He’s now delving into how virtual reality could help people with disabilities. “Do what inspires you,” he said. “If you don’t know where you’re wanting to go in life, how are you going to get there? “If I have a goal, I’ll constantly move towards it.” Mr Whitehead didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming the quality and improvement manager at AG Coombs. He didn’t know what he wanted to do when he was at school, but found a job and put his hand up for every opportunity offered to progress through the company. “Successful for me is having a family I’m proud of and a job that I enjoy going to every day,” he said. Ms Santos, 22, felt pressure from her parents to attend uni but found it wasn’t for her. She dropped out, got a tattoo apprenticeship and started volunteering for gaming events.

Mr Barber ran through the bare essentials all students in the room would need for their future career, regardless of the industry. He urged them to collaborate and create with someone they didn’t know each week, keep learning from anyone at any time on any subject, to manage their time and to believe in themselves. “If you’re worried about what other

people think of you, your friends are doing the exact same thing, which means no one’s thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves,” he said. Mr Barber said they would need to know how to analyse and adapt, to persist when things got hard or boring, to problem-solve, and to enact. “You must be able to DO. All of that makes no difference unless you do give yourself a target and do work towards it,” he said.

Terror teen’s 10 years

A HALLAM teenager has been jailed for up to 10 years over an Anzac Day terror plot to behead a police officer in 2015. Sevdet Ramadan Besim, 19, had pleaded guilty to preparing a terrorist attack involving running down and beheading a police officer with a knife at an Anzac Day service. Justice Michael Croucher, of the Victorian Supreme Court, ruled Besim will be eligible for parole in seven-and-a-half years. The offence carries a maximum life imprisonment. “To the vast majority of the community it is unfathomable that an 18-year-old boy would plan to kill a law enforcement of-

POLICE arrested and charged a man who allegedly rammed a police car in Berwick, forcing an officer to draw his weapon and fire several shots into the vehicle. Fugitive Taskforce and Southern Metropolitan Region Crime Team detectives arrested a 33-year-old Berwick man in a car park on Stud Road, Rowville, about 5.50pm on Friday 2 September. They charged him with four counts each of unlicensed driving and motor car theft, three counts of theft, two counts each of reckless conduct endangering life and reckless conduct endangering serious injury, plus robbery, indictable police assault, failing to stop a vehicle on request and driving in a dangerous manner. The charges followed a report to police of a stolen car in Elgin Street, Berwick, about 4.30pm on Thursday 1 September and a subsequent incident where a police car was allegedly rammed and an officer discharged a number of rounds from a police issue firearm. The driver allegedly fled the scene and police engaged in a short pursuit. The vehicle was later found dumped in Kelletts Road, Rowville, but the driver was gone.

He had a knife, a car and a Jihad flag and searched on the Internet for Anzac Day memorials. Justice Croucher said there were also

“perhaps faint” suggestions that Besim might have pulled out of the plot – but that was a small consideration even though no terrorist act occurred. The judge was not persuaded on the balance of probabilities that Besim had renounced his violent jihadist beliefs, but otherwise had good prospects for rehabilitation. He took into account the accused had showed contrition, was young, had a supportive family and pleaded guilty. Justice Croucher indicated that the jail term started from today (5 September) but would include Besim's period of pre-sentence detention.

Ram raid charges POLICE have charged two men over an alleged ram raid in Narre Warren on Friday 2 September. A member of the public called triple-zero and reported seeing a van crash through the doors of a camping store on Narre Warren North Road just after 4.30am. They allegedly saw the van’s occupants loading goods into the vehicle and called police. Officers pursued the van for a short time before it sped off. Another police unit came across the vehicle with its lights off near Belgrave-Hallam Road. Its driver turned onto the Monash Freeway, travelling inbound in the outbound lanes until it crashed into a railing on the centre median strip. One man allegedly ran from the van and into grassland,

where he was arrested by a canine unit member with assistance from the air wing. The other man allegedly carjacked a vehicle at the crash scene, reversed into another car, then side-swiped a police car before driving at police members who were getting out of the van. The stolen car then collided with a prime mover. Police sprayed the carjacker with capsicum spray and arrested him. Both were taken to hospital under police guard. Police charged a 26-year-old Plenty man and a 22-year-old Reservoir man with reckless conduct endangering life, robbery and burglary. They were been remanded to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 October.

High anxiety By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MAN has flown into a rage after discovering his ex-wife’s new partner in her Hampton Park home bedroom, causing one of his sons to vomit out of anxiety. The recently separated 41-year-old man had entered the home’s unlocked front door and discovered the new partner was in her bedroom in late July, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 5 September. The court heard he then went back outside and called his former wife, asking her if her partner was with her. When she opened the front door, the man barged in the house and found the new partner in hiding. The two men argued and pushed one another. During the scuffle, the ac-

cused fell and struck his head. His son, who was ordered by the accused to take photos of the other man, began shaking and vomiting out of anxiety. The accused left and shortly returned with two of his children to “look at what (their mother) was doing”. The man’s lawyer told the court the accused had an earlier agreement with his ex-wife that he’d move out of the matrimonial home if she didn’t have her new partner at the house. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the argument was “victim blaming”. “Your client doesn’t own his ex-wife and shouldn’t use his children in a way that’s against their mother.” He said it was “disgraceful” for the man to involve his own children in the argument, and

even worse given the son had a pre-disposition to vomiting when anxious. “Does he understand the impact adult behaviour has on children and their development?” The man, who had no prior offences, had been subject to a limited intervention order. His wife stood up from the gallery to plead Mr Vandersteen for “leniency” on behalf of her children. She said she’d find it hard to cope if the order was upgraded to a full contact ban between the man and his children. Mr Vandersteen however put the man on a full order, with a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction. The man was orderd to complete a men’s behaviour change program.

A TRAVELLING salesman who ripped off his employer’s fuel card for more than $8700 has been ordered to reimburse the proceeds and perform unpaid community work. Dimitrios Fotopoulos, 48, pleaded guilty to 35 offences relating to illegally using a Caltex Star Card 104 times at a number of service stations in greater Melbourne in 2013 and 2014, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. Invoices were sent from 34 Caltex stations including two each in Dandenong and Keys-

borough, as well as Doveton, Kooweerup, Narre Warren and Noble Park. Fotopoulos claimed he had not stolen the card. It had been provided by his employer Samsung Australia for driving his car for work purposes, defence lawyer Adam Maloney told the court on 29 August. Samsung had, however, told Mr Maloney it didn’t use that particular card, the court heard. According to a police summary, the card had been misplaced by a La Trobe Valley plumbing business.

Police alleged Fotopoulos knew the card’s PIN from working at the plumbing firm as a service delivery driver. Mr Maloney conceded Fotopoulos had used the card with “dishonest intentions”. Fotopoulos left Samsung in late 2014 - by his own choice - to be a full-time carer for his mother, Mr Maloney said. Fotopoulos was convicted and placed on a 12-month community order including 125 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay $8748.70 in compensation.

MEN’S parts are in the spotlight. It’s National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and all men are being encouraged to get their parts checked and head to the Hallam Truck Centre to donate to the cause. PACCAR Parts is on the prevention highway and hopes to donate $50,000 to prostate cancer research by the end of October. The Parts for Parts campaign wants truckies and all men in sedentary jobs to get to the Hallam Truck Centre to buy PACCAR Parts to help reach the goal. As part of the awareness month, a portion of the profits from selected PACCAR Parts products will go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) along with any donations made in store. At a council meeting on Tuesday 6 September, Casey councillor Geoff Ablett raised a notice of motion for the development of an equestrian centre and a learn to ride free program at Cranbourne’s training hub. OLIVIA Brown, like most twenty-somethings, likes to stay active and enjoy the outdoors, but her body doesn’t always keep up with her spirit. Olivia, from Clyde, has lived with cystic fibrosis (CF) for most of her life. “I am 24 years old, and was diagnosed with CF at six weeks old,” Olivia said. “CF limits my life a bit, being only capable of working short hours, getting exhausted quickly and feeling unwell regularly, and it being hard to breathe really limits how much I can do every day.” CF is one of the most common life-shortening genetic conditions affecting the lungs and the digestive systems of Australians. Those living with CF undergo a gruelling daily treatment regime to stay healthy, and Olivia, along with hundreds of others is helping to raise awareness and funds in ‘Great Strides’ during 65 Roses month. The awareness month dates back to 1965 when a young boy pronounced cystic fibrosis as “65 Roses”. Olivia will run or walk 4km around The Tan on Sunday 30 October despite her lung function being below 50 per cent for the past couple of years. “I want to be able to create as much awareness and funds for CF as possible, so we can have a cure in my lifetime,” Olivia said. “My daily routine includes up to 40 tablets a day including digestive enzymes, vitamins and antibiotics,” Olivia said. “Then I do number of nebulisers which can take up to three hours daily depending on how I feel. “Physical activity includes as much exercise as I can handle each day, as well as, breathing exercises and stretches to open my lungs up and of course resting an appropriate amount to make

Power player plugged in By Cam Lucadou-Wells HALLAM electrical contractor Powerplant Project Services is a “little guy" that is a growing force, having recently won a state contract to design lighting for the most recent upgrade of the M1 project. The Monash Freeway 30-kilometre upgrade runs from EastLink to Clyde Road, Berwick - with additional on-ramp signals out to Pakenham. Director Greg Plant says after the latest project, Powerplant’s staff would have designed lighting for the freeway from Pakenham to Tullamarine - except for the city tunnels. “For us it’s a real achievement as a relatively small company to be participating in these larger projects and to have contact with nearly the entire freeway. “We’re little guys who have got to do big things locally.” It ranks as one of Powerplant’s biggest jobs, alongside its lighting design for 300 light poles in the recent Tullamarine Freeway widening. Other major local projects include Peninsula Link, Sladen Street, Ernst Wanke Road, Northey Road, Casey Fields BMX centre, Bunjil Place and Casey Indoor Leisure Centre. Powerplant also lands electricity-line contracts for new housing estates, particularly in Casey, and is helping SP Ausnet put its powerlines

underground in bushfire prone areas. Powerplant promotes new, brighter and more energy-efficient LED lighting on their projects. The white lights use 30 per cent less power, have less “light spill” and improve visibility on the road at night, lighting design manager James Kerner said. In the past 12 months, the business has added more than 600 projects. Its customer base now totals more than 500. Its staff has grown five-fold to 40 in the past four years forcing a move into more spacious offices in Hallam. The company hopes to attract surveyors, development consultants and civil construction companies, to form a hub of services under the same roof. Mr Plant started the business as a solo venture at home in 1999, seeing an opening after the State Electricity Commission of Victoria was broken up. “Regulators wanted customers to have a choice but there was no-one to provide that.” Powerplant is still a unique business and has grown with its reputation. Mr Plant says the secret to Powerplant’s success comes from “serving our customers well”. “We develop the most economic idea and we deliver what our client needs from it,” he said.

A $15 million program is offering TAFE places to 3000 asylum seekers and refugees over the next two years. For the first time, refugees with temporary protection visas will also be eligible for the State Government’s Asylum Seeker VET Program. The government currently provides funding for about 300 eligible asylum seekers each year and exempts them from the usual citizenship criteria so they can undertake training. Under the new project, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) will refer asylum seekers and eligible refugees to do their training at Victorian TAFEs, private training providers and through the Learn Local network. The ASRC will also provide additional support and professional development to training providers working with asylum seekers and refugees. Customised language and literacy programs will be offered to participants to improve their reading and writing skills. An Integrated VET Learning Plan will help them to attain qualifications in the community where they live. Friends of Refugees spokeswoman Sri Samy said the initiative would assist people in limbo. “Other states should also follow suit,” she said. “This will give people seeking asylum and refugees on temporary visas to take part in the work force and lead an independent life rather than relying on charities and handouts to lead their day to day life.” Ms Samy said that in the past, Dandenong-based Friends of Refugees had found that most funded organisations only assisted people with an English level over four with preemployment and training. “However, based on the people that we assist every day we find that over 40 per cent of people seeking asylum have English skills less than level four,” she said.

“Friends of Refugees mainly fills in the service gaps that funded organisations are unable to do, so we have a small scale pre-employment training program for people with limited English.” On its Facebook page, the ASRC said that for the past five years it had been pioneering the only TAFE program for people seeking asylum in Australia. “We’ve placed 751 people into TAFE with a 92 per cent success rate,” the post said. “On the back of this success they (the State Government) are now investing in a state-wide response.” ASRC said the TAFE places would be in areas such as hospitality and aged care. “The ASRC will manage 1000 of these places and also take the lead in strengthening the capacity of the Victorian TAFE sector by sharing our ground-breaking model through training and running a help line,” the post said. “Victoria is the only state where people seeking asylum can access TAFE. “The challenge to other governments now is to follow Victoria’s lead and recognise that further education is a ticket to a better life and a stronger community.” Victoria is home to about 11,000 asylum seekers and refugees with temporary protection visas. Many of these people will soon transition to new visas that require them to work and study so that they can apply for further substantive visas. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said the training would help recipients to “get a proper job, to reach their ambitions and full potential so they can play a productive role in the Victorian workforce”. “People come here looking for a fair go - and we’ll do everything in our power to give it to them,” he said.

The much-photographed megashakes are indeed a feast for the eyes as well as an explosion of sweet flavour that wouldn’t be out of place in Willy Wonka’s imagination. On average, Sugar Buns create a staggering 700 mega shakes a day, including the ‘chocoholic’, ‘candyland’, ‘salted caramel’ and ‘strawberry shortcake’. Behind the scenes, staff meticulously construct the shakes like they’re an artwork. On top of the ‘chocoholic’ icecream mountain, the chefs lavish chocolate sauce and affix Tim Tams, wafers, fairyfloss - and then line the plate with mud cake. Owner and director Steven Richard says he aims to balance the flavours

enough for customers to finish the mountainous meals - but also feel they have had value for money. On Fathers Day, he unleashed a savoury variety comprising peanut butter and jelly. The mega shake was dreamt up by Mr Richard while making a milk shake at home. He added ice cream, then a caramel chocolate bar, chocolate sauce and “demolished” it. “I thought then why not add everything together?” Creativity also abounds on the rest of Sugar Buns’ long menu, such as a smashed avo rosti with compressed potato, poached eggs, goats cheese and dukkah. There’s also the burgers served in brioche buns made by Mr Richard’s dad Burty for the past 30 years, as well as an imaginative ‘eggs Benedict’ on brioche French toast with coffee, vanilla, banana and maple syrup. Other highlights are a lavish carbonara papadelle in a smoked hamhock jus with crispy bacon, mushroom, poached egg, fresh pasta and cream sauce. The calamari powdered with ground up fennel, oregano and rice-flour is another must-try.

Mykelti keeping a lid on it By Russell Bennett PAKENHAM teenager Mykelti Lefau takes everything in his stride - it’s plain to see with his happy-go-lucky attitude and calm demeanour. Perhaps it’s for that reason that he hasn’t made a huge deal about just what he accomplished on 27 August for the St Kilda City Under 19s against Carrum Patterson Lakes in their Southern Football League clash at Roy Dore Reserve. The Saints powered to a huge win - 28.10(178) to 2.2(14), but that’s just the start of the story because Mykelti, who was born and raised in Auckland and is in just his fourth year of footy, kicked 25 of those 28 goals. There were only five goals for the entire match that didn’t come from Mykelti’s boot, but if that feat wasn’t remarkable enough - he normally plays in the midfield. He’s got a hulking 6’4” frame that belies his speed and agility and his pure brute strength allows him to split packs and shrug off tackles with ease. Mykelti, a former Pakenham junior under Warren ‘Cowboy’ Cawcutt, is in his first year with the Saints alongside a group of his mates - Josiah Laakulu,

Leon Mateariki, Jeremy Dang, Fabricko and Febrick Addi, and Nathan Dawson - all local boys. Nathan Johns, another local, is their coach. Mykelti and his mates car pool to games right across the expansive Southern competition, but he then has to find his way to his rugby league games each Saturday afternoon. Yes, he plays Under 19 footy and Under 18 rugby league on the same day. Mykelti’s performance against Carrum Patterson Lakes is already the stuff of legend - he last week sat comfortably on top of the weekly goal kicking list on the SportsTG community of local footy websites. But he’ll leave it up to others to make a fuss about it. All he wants to do is keep improving in his footy enough to make scouts stand up and take notice. It’s safe to say they already have. Though not usually a stay-at-home forward, Mykelti was stationed inside the forward 50 against Carrum because his coach thought he had a shot at winning the league goal kicking award. How right he was. His 25-goal haul - plus his three on the weekend against Oakleigh District - takes his season tally to 72 through

they had to switch him. “The other team was cracking up they were laughing. “I don’t even think about the game but everyone else reminds me. I don’t make a big deal about it. I got fed pretty well. “Half of them were from really good delivery but the other half were just really weird. There was one where the ball went to ground and it was around the point post and obviously they were trying to rush it. There were two of them there - one was trying to shepherd me and when the other kid went to rush it behind I slipped around him and grabbed him. He was holding the ball and I picked him and the ball up together and he let it go and I just kicked it. Everyone was laughing - even their own team mates. I felt bad for them. “I just ripped the ball out of this guy’s hands. That was a really weird goal, that one, but what I hated was that I had to go and get it myself. “I had to do it 25 times! It was like I was doing fitness tests.” And the scariest thing - Mykelti is still rapidly improving, being so new to the game. Heaven help anyone trying to stop him in the years to come!

SO many people spend minute after minute, hour after hour, day after day suffering in silence through their mental health battles. Not on the Officer sporting community’s watch. Last Friday night at the Officer Recreation Reserve at Starling Road, the cricket club and the junior footy club came together to hold the inaugural ‘Not On My Watch’ all-star footy game, with all funds raised from the night going directly to Beyond Blue. The concept was the brainchild of Officer Cricket Club senior president Tim Smith, who also has an active involvement in the local footy scene. “My wife suffers from depression,” he said openly. “I’ve learned to live with the signs and be able to read the triggers of when she’s up and when she’s down. “I’ve coached a lot of junior football and I coached a team this year,” he said. “I could actually see the triggers in some of the players this year because I’d had that experience. I was able to reach out to those people and, in turn, a couple of them reached out to me when they really needed to. “I then thought that I was unlucky - or lucky - enough, however you look at it, to know the signs but a lot of other coaches in sporting clubs don’t, so it was really about trying to get coaches on board. “We’ve got a training pro-

The two flocks of Eagles, Cranbourne and Beaconsfield, are the two remaining nightmares in Berwick’s dream of back-to-back flags after both scored hard-fought victories. Cranbourne progressed to a remarkable sixth consecutive grand final with a three-point win over Berwick in Saturday’s second semifinal at Pakenham. Beaconsfield then set up a blockbuster Battle of the Creek against the Wickers with a gutsy 13-point victory over Narre in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. There was nothing between Cranbourne and Berwick on Saturday, a late a shot at goal from Wickers’ forward Tim Gunn slipped wide, leaving the Eagles with the first seat at the big dance. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said his side will enjoy the build-up despite losing the last four grand finals on the trot. “We will enjoy the next two weeks, not fear it, and the things we identified last year, clearly our mindset - I’m really confident we’ve addressed those issues now,” Goosey said. “Since we played Berwick the first time (Round 5) our attitude has been spot on, and winning today allows us the time to work on what we need to work on. Last year was last year, after half time you could see we were gone mentally, but this year we’re better prepared for what’s to come.” Cranbourne’s much-vaunted midfield was on fire with Shaun

With midcourt-maestro Leigh Taylor looking on from the sidelines, and quality bookends like defender Adele Clydesdale and goaler Chloe Phillips warming up on court two, the Magpies still found a way to dominate a high quality opponent in the first half. The Magpies’ progression to Starling Road on Saturday 17 September was built on a strong defensive effort in the first half, allowing the normally potent Redbacks outfit just 14 goals in the first two quarters. When the oomph counts By Ewan Kennedy FOR those drivers who feel that lots of performance isn’t quite enough BMW Australia is now importing the BMW M3 Competition sedan, and M4 Competition coupe and convertible. Our test week in the hottest BMW M3 sedan was an extremely enjoyable one. M3 Competition has even stronger engine performance, recalibrated steering, suspension and stability settings than the standard M3. Its springs are 15 per cent stiffer and the Adaptive M suspension has firmer damper settings across Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. Anti-roll bars and bushings are also changed to suit. The Active M Differential can lock the rear axle between a range of zero and 100 per cent. Forged, machine-polished starspoke 20-inch M light alloy wheels follow the design of the BMW M4 GTS competition car and carry Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres (265/30 R20 front, 285/30 R20 rear). Sourced from BMW Individual, the M3 Competition package has Shadow Line exterior trim. A black high-gloss finish highlights the BMW kidney grille, side gills, window trims and rear model badge. Hot looks, hot engine: BMW's M3 Competition, built for the revhead. arches and the long bonnet features a power dome in its centre. The bulge is there to make space for the large intercooler. We are all aware that today’s best automatic transmissions are better than humans at maximising acceleration with ultra-fast changes. But if you want to add your driving pleasure you can get, for no extra charge, a six-speed manual. Okay so it takes 0.2 seconds longer to get to 100, but who cares? Our review car had the automatic transmission, perhaps we will try for a manual next time. At low revs and speeds you do feel some turbo lag, but once that’s passed the M3 Competition is a stunner, with fast response. What BMW likes to call ‘trackhoned acoustics’ give the M3 all the right crackles and spits when driving in anything other than a very tame manner. We love it!

The dual-clutch gearbox can be a bit cranky at times at very low speeds in parking situations and the wide tyres can also add to the difficulty. If you can’t drive around problems like this you should not be buying a high-performance car… Handling is limpet-like thanks to the basic standard balance of the car and further aided by the excellent Competition features built into the suspension, steering and tyres. The feel through the steering is spot on, with just the right amount of power assistance. Comfort does suffer at times, which is hardly unexpected given the stiffer suspension items. Tyre noise is also a factor, but we’ve heard worse in other high-performance machines. Official fuel consumption of the BMW M3 is 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres. In real life we found ours using 10 to 12 litres per hundred kilometres under sensible daily driving, getting up into the high teens if you get properly stuck into it. Open road and motoring driving can bring it down to eight to nine litres range. BMW’s latest M3, the Competition variant will bring a smile to the faces of any keen driver, all the more so if they do decide to take it on track days and really put ‘competition’ into their lives in the true sense of the word.
