All Under One Roof FOLLOWING the success of Noosa Food and Wine 2016, Tourism Noosa has announced a new partner who will deliver the 2017 Noosa Food and Wine Festival.

On Tuesday (6 September) Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said that after a comprehensive selection process creative services and events business Under One Roof has been awarded the licence to operate the 2017 Noosa Food and Wine Festival.

“Under One Roof will become the strategic and operational partner with Tourism Noosa to deliver the 2017 Noosa Food and Wine Festival which will be held from 18-21 May,“ he siad.

“We are excited to be working with the team from Under One Roof who have a diverse range of experience across national and international festivals including Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Grampians Grape Escape and Flavour Exchange Victoria.“ Under One Roof general manager Nick Burgess said the team was thrilled at the prospect of re-imagining and running the

Noosa Food and Wine Festival.

“It’s a great privilege to be awarded one of the nation’s most exciting and high-profile food and wine festivals,“ he siad.

“We will be working with Tourism Noosa and local hospitality operators to develop further partnerships for hosting chefs, creating events and providing a festival hub.

“We are excited about developing and delivering a sustainable future for the festival.

“Noosa is well recognised both nationally and internationally as a stunning food destination and we understand the significance of ensuring the festival grows in a way that complements the overall Noosa brand.”

Mr Burgess said the festival would expand in 2017 to a fourday event and would continue to showcase some of Australia’s best chefs and Queensland produce across a diverse program of events showcasing the Noosa region.

IT WAS a great day to be a dog on Saturday (3 September) at the annual Poochies at Peregian family fun day. Each year the front oval at St Andrew’s Anglican College becomes a haven for pups as they join their owners to help raise funds for Smart Pups, assistance dogs specially trained to aid autistic children. Stalemate over hospice

By Jolene Ogle THE Sunshine Hospice Board announced on Friday afternoon that they will vacate the former Katie Rose Cottage site in Doonan, sparking outrage in the community.

The announcement has shocked locals with many Facebook followers venting their frustration online at the uncertain future of a hospice for the Noosa region.

“This is a travesty; rampant bureaucracy,” Annie Cory said.

“Just wish the board would step down. We now don’t have a hospice and if we ever get another one, it won’t be as good as the original Katie Rose Cottage and will probably be down the coast somewhere. Disgraceful,” Anne McGovern wrote.

Earlier this year, hospice volunteers walked off the job to protest a lack of information about the fate of the hospice from the board after the facility closed in December 2015 due to financial difficulties.

The former volunteers then formed the Katie Rose Cottage Committee (KRCC) with plans to force the board to step down and reinstate the palliative care facility at the Doonan site.

The two groups have since been locked in a stalemate, with neither side agreeing to step down, culminating in Friday’s announcement that Sunshine Hospice, who previously operated the facility, would permanently vacate the Doonan site ahead of the sale of the property by the owner.

In a statement to the media, Sun-

shine Hospice chairman Frank Lewins said he understood this was a “challenging time of transition for some members of the community”.

“Change is difficult. For many of us who have been involved with the charity and the Doonan site for many years, it is a time of mixed emotions,” he said.

“It is hard to leave the past behind ... but we are working to ensure a financially sustainable communitybased hospice is available on the Sunshine Coast for everyone who needs it into the future and that is a very worthwhile and positive endeavour.”

KRCC spokesperson Carol Raye said the board might have “devastated” the community, but the committee had vowed to reopen the Katie Rose Cottage and its palliative care services.

“We believe the current site in Doonan was, and still is, suitable for an appropriately accredited and more cost effective palliative care facility that has earned the love, commitment and support of the community,” she said.

“A group of financial members has written to the board and is seeking a special meeting to present a resolution to have the current board of directors removed.

“It is our hope this meeting will take place as soon as the process allows, and if successful, a newly installed board will work towards negotiating to purchase the property and re-open as a first priority.”

“The community has an overwhelming desire to keep the original Katie Rose (operating) model. With over 2300 signatures on a petition and with significantly more than a

‘minority group’ of volunteers and many of the organisation’s financial members choosing not to continue to support their decision, it is clear the board has lost significant, widespread support,” she said.

“This committee can and will continue to work to reopen the hospice for the Sunshine Coast Community. It will bring back palliative care services to those in the community who wish to choose an alternative

to hospital-style care; exactly the essence and ethos that Katie Rose Cottage offered and gained a great deal of respect for.”

Mr Lewins said the board was continuing discussions with allied health organisations to secure a purpose-built facility for the Sunshine Coast and all equipment from the Doonan site would be stored until the facility was built.

MP is best mate of koalas MEMBER for Noosa, Glen Elmes, called upon the Labor Government in Parliament last week to make use of the land purchased for koala habitat by the previous LNP Government.

“The LNP committed more than $26.5 million to the protection of koalas when in power, including the purchase of 57 hectares of prime koala habitat at Lake Macdonald.

“In a Private Member's Statement to Parliament, I called upon the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef Dr Steven Miles to at least keep up with community expectation for koala conservation and deliver policies that actually invest in the environment and deliver outcomes.

“I worked very hard with my colleague the then Minister for En-

vironment and Heritage Protection, Andrew Powell, to reinstate a trial to translocate koalas into the Noosa National Park. The trial was very close to approval and the Minister should give it the tick of approval right now.

Mr Elmes said there was also land at Lake Macdonald, and in other south east corner locations where female koalas that had been sterilised or koalas that had been displaced by development could be translocated.

Preliminary estimates in the new South East Queensland Regional Plan, he said, suggested that an additional two million people would be living in the south east by 2041.

"Where will the koalas fit in? The current government needs to take action before it is too late," Mr Elmes said.

“Friday 30 September is national Save the Koala Day, and I will be attending a fund-raising lunch at Noosa’s Makepeace Island, which is owned by Sir Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey. The Makepeace Island project is intended to be a base for treatment not to become a new home, so it is vital that the government utilise the suitable habitats they already have available to them.

“I commend the Richard Branson Koala Conservancy and all of the dedicated local koala campaigners for the work they are doing in this space. If as a community we lose the battle to maintain healthy koala populations in South East Queensland, then we have lost the war to maintain the environment in which these wonderful creatures live,” Mr Elmes said.

Stroke safety is a numbers game

By Hollie Harris HUMBLE family man Chris Kay has fought his way back from a massive two-year battle piecing together his life after a stroke changed it all in 2014.

In the run-up to National Stroke Week 12-18 September, Chris has just won the national award for Improving Life After Stroke Award by the Stroke Foundation.

One in six people are affected by a stroke and as an avid surfer and traveller who was healthy and fit, Chris and his family were shocked when it happened to him.

He was told by the Head Cardiologist in Nambour that no one who had survived such a severe stroke.

“It shook me to the core. It really sunk in then how lucky I was,” Chris said.

Chris was discharged from the hospital without the motor skills and functionality he once had and he couldn’t find any information about what to do next.

“My brain was like a filing cabinet which has been tipped upside down and emptied on the floor and I had to figure out how to put it all back together somehow,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe there was no help or support for people like me to rebuild their lives or deal with something like this.

“I wanted to make a group where stroke survivors could come together and support each other.”

Chris began a stroke support group called Young Queensland Stroke Support Group which meets once a month

which attract people from as far away as Brisbane.

He has tirelessly committed his time to creating awareness in the community about stroke and how vital it is to be aware of the signs.

“I just couldn’t believe there wasn’t any support groups or information for me about what to do next.

“I want to get the word out about how common strokes are and I want people to know there are others who have survived and rebuilt their lives,” he said.

Know Your Numbers is a program offered in pharmacies to provide a quick risk assessment.

Chris said few people know about this program but it can save lives.

“I want to encourage people to get into their pharmacy and check their numbers. Every minute counts with stroke.

“If I can save just one person’s life by telling to them to get into their pharmacy and check out their numbers, then I’ll be a happy man.

“My life has changed completely.

I feel like it’s my duty to make a difference now and I don’t want anyone falling through the cracks.”

Chris will be hosting an awareness campaign at Bunnings Noosaville on October from 10-2pm.

Festival in cinema country THE Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) released its much anticipated program for the inaugural festival at The J on Tuesday 6 September with a special appearance from executive producer Annette Sym. The festival will run from 3-6 November and will showcase local, Australian and international talent on the big screen, as well as present a diverse program including more than 140 short and feature length films, a classic silent film, an environmental documentary and an industry guest event at locations across Noosa, Eumundi, Pomona and Cooroy.

At the media launch on Tuesday, festival organisers announced an all-premiere line-up of new release feature films as part of its World Cinema program, including five Australian premieres, one world and one Queensland premiere–- from Australia, USA, France, Italy, Belgium and Lebanon.

Included in the bill is the world premiere of Ryder Country, a psychological thriller that was filmed and produced on the Sunshine

Ryder Country will have its world premiere at NIFF. Coast and will screen for the first time at the BCC Cinemas as part of the festival.

Organisers said the quality of the inaugural Noosa International Film Festival program has surpassed expectations for the festival’s first year.

Festival director Peter Chenoweth said the announcement of the festival program is an exciting opportunity to place Noosa and the Sunshine Coast on the global film festival circuit.

“We are confident that the quality and diversity of the festival program will entertain and delight film-goers,” he said.

Lady golfers line up on AVEO

By Jolene Ogle A GROUP of former Peregian Springs golfers have banded together to call on AVEO to re-open the once prestigious golf course.

The group of female golfers have a list of questions for the developer and while they await answers they are “valiantly trying to keep their club spirit alive.”

In a statement to media, the group said they were now getting angry the longer the course remained closed and wanted answers to questions such as when would the course re-open and why would AVEO build retirement communities but seem “unmoved by the social and lifestyle destruction they have caused at Peregian Springs”.

“These ladies are not to be messed with. They are sticking together and they want action and

answers,” the statement said.

Group representative Elizabeth Henley said since the club’s closure the ladies had kept in touch by email, arranging golfing excursions to other golf clubs and arranging social gatherings.

“The golf course has now been closed for more than a month and all members who played golf and whose social life was centred at the clubhouse are now sorely missing those happy days,” she said.

According to the group, scepticism is mounting about AVEO’s intentions for the golf course and Ms Henley said the group believed they deserved answers from the developer about the future of the club.

“We have invested heavily in Peregian Springs. This is our lifestyle and for many of us, our retirement,” she said.

“We have paid a considerable

amount of money for the right to play golf on our doorstep and enjoy a golfing, social life.

“Aveo/FKP sold us that dream and now it has been taken away.

They have not fulfilled their promise and they still have a responsibility to deliver while there is still land to sell here from which they profit handsomely. And they have a responsibility to ensure it is a suitable golf course when they exit.”

Ms Henley said the group had concerns over the maintenance of the golf course with weeds appearing on the course and people using the course as a thoroughfare, despite promises the course would be maintained until a resolution was found.

AVEO’s media team was contacted for comment but no reply was received by the time of going to print.

Former Peregian Springs golfers have banded together to call on AVEO to re-open the club and course.

Visitors can’t resist Noosa’s natural charms strong appeal to international visitors, combined with targeted activity meant that the destination was reaping significant benefits from international markets.

“This is Noosa’s seventh consecutive quarter of growth and travellers from overseas are increasingly being drawn to Noosa’s natural beauty and the incredible range of visitor experiences on our doorstep,” he said.

According to the data, the record international spend was up 47.4 per cent on the previous year, with expenditure by New Zealanders up by

48 per cent to $29.5 million, the UK up 16 per cent to $15.8 million and Germany up 24 per cent to $6.1 million.

Mr Massingham said it was particularly pleasing to see solid growth from New Zealand after a number of softer years from this market.

“Noosa’s New Zealand numbers are the highest they have been since 2010, and importantly our nights increased by 53 per cent to 19,000, the strongest result since 2008,” he said.

“Tourism Noosa’s proactive and consistent work in the international

markets, partnered with a commitment from local operators and strong support from the travel trade, is reaping rewards for the destination.

These positive results highlight the need to plan for continued growth and the Noosa Global Market Strategy, which we launched late 2015, is the roadmap to our international activity over the coming years.

“This increase in spend by international tourists in our region is vitally important for our economy as it helps local jobs to be retained and created.”

The Noosa tourism industry is booming according to the latest data.

THE latest international visitor survey (IVS) data for the year ending June 2016 reveals good news for Noosa, with international numbers reaching an all time high and spend reaching over $100 million.

International visitor numbers to the Noosa region increased by 7.4 per cent in the year ending June 2016 – to reach a record 146,000 – while, importantly, international spend increased 47 per cent to reach $100.5 million.

Top writers turning page

By Hollie Harris THREE of Papua New Guinea's leading writers visited Noosa on Monday night, meeting with local writers to prepare for an appearance at the Brisbane Writers Festival.

Paraplegic author Francis Nii is from the New Guinea highlands, and is forced to write on a mobile phone when he his bedridden.

Mr Nii was accompanied by veteran journalist Daniel Kumbon and top political commentator Martyn Namo-

rong and Brisbane-based PNG writer Rashmii Bell.

Collectively, the writers represent a splendid crosssection of contemporary PNG writing, ranging across the spectrum from novels to poetry, commentary and journalism.

The group met with Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, and mayor Tony Wellington, who said it was an honour to host the welcome ceremony.

“Thanks to Keith Jackson for introducing three awardwinning writers from PNG

to our many local writers in Noosa.

“It was an honour to host a welcome ceremony for them last night together with mayor Tony Wellington where we were presented with a Highland cap and a painting,” Mr Elmes said.

“Welcome to Noosa one and all,” he said.

The writers will next attend the Brisbane Writers Festival and then go on to Sydney to meet with the Australian Society of Authors.

MEMBERS, stakeholders and the Tourism Noosa Board held their four yearly conference on Tuesday to discuss the Noosa Sustainable Destination Action Plan, and the future is looking bright for the region.

Members had their say on directions for the industry over the next five years with a purpose to guide sustainable tourist development and destination management in Noosa.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said statistics showed there was a steady increase.

“We are really looking at four key areas. Marketing and Events, Industrial Develop-

ment and Sustainability,” Mr Massingham said.

The current SDAP which has guided our vision from 2013-2016 has aimed to develop tourism in Noosa that is both sustainable and profitable for the industry.

The plan has been successfully delivered, as tourism dollars are increasing across the region.

“We receive $716 million a year from tourists visiting Noosa, and we want to make sure we continue to target the right markets,” Mr Massingham said.

Push for legalising abortion

By Jolene Ogle PRO-CHOICE supporters gathered in Noosa on Monday night (5 September) to urge residents to call on their local member to make abortion legal in Queensland.

The public meeting was an information session for anyone interested in the two bills presented to state Parliament by Cairns MP Rob Pyne that aim to remove abortion from the criminal code by deleting three sections of the current legislation.

Sections 224, 225 and 226 mean that doctors performing abortions could face up to 14 years jail, women who seek a termination could face up to 7 years jail and anyone who supports them faces up to 3 years jail.

Mr Pyne’s private member’s bill, the Abortion Law Reform (Woman’s Right to Choose) Amendment Bill 2016, was presented to a bi-partisan committee who handed down their recommendation on 26 August to not support the bill.

Committee chair Nudgee MP Leanne Linard said the committee was unable to support the bill as it “failed to address a number of important policy issues and to achieve a number of its own stated objectives�.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said Mr Pyne’s bill was the “shortest, laziest piece of legislation� he had ever seen claiming Mr Pyne put the bill to a committee hoping they would “do all the hard work�.

While the committee were considering the first bill, holding public forums and receiving over 1400 submissions, Mr Pyne presented a second amendment bill that hopes

A recommendation is yet to be handed down on the second bill, but pro-choice group Children by Choice and the Australian Sex Party wanted to gain support for their campaign to legalise abortion in Queensland by holding public meetings throughout the region.

and unfair to women, saying the original laws from 1899 were introduced before women could vote. “It’s time for change� she said.

Ms Doherty said it was time to remove the shame associated with abortion and remove the procedure from the criminal code.

Ms Doherty called on residents to lobby their local member to support the bills and push for abortion to be legalised in Queensland, but the committee’s recommendation to not support the bill means it is highly

unlikely state MPs will even vote on the first Bill and it is not yet known if the second Bill will be presented for a vote.

Mr Elmes said if there was a vote in regards to decriminalising abortion, his party would allow a conscious vote and he would vote to his conscious.

He said over the years the rate of abortions in Queensland had fallen, thanks to better sex education in schools and the availability of contraception.

Mr Elmes said he understood there were circumstances such as sexual assault that led to a woman needing an abortion but it shouldn’t be a “free for all� and should be “safe, legal and rare�.

WHEN 48-year-old mother of two Carolyn Lansdown received notice that she had been awarded the National Medal for outstanding service to the communities in which she lived, she was indeed very surprised.

Regarding the award she said: “I am proud to be acknowledged, but I didn’t go expecting medals. You do these things because you enjoy it and you become involved in your community. You also get the opportunity to meet great people.”

The warrant for this award, which was struck in 1975, states that the National Medal is awarded for diligent long service to the community in hazardous circumstances, including in times of emergency and national disaster, in direct protection of life and property.

Originally the award was only available to members of police, fire and ambulance. In 1987, SES members, correction officers and St John Ambulance members were included.

Then, in October 2000, surf life saving was also included. Service in this branch could be backdated to 1986.

However Carolyn was not the first in the Lansdown family to be so acknowledged, as four other family members have also received this recognition. The family involvement in firefighting started back in 1939 when two members were involved in major fires.

Born in Croydon, Victoria, Carolyn was educated at the Wanganui State High School and on graduation she enrolled in the university at

Bendigo where she undertook a three-year fulltime course in outdoor education. During this time she did part-time work at school camps and National Parks. In 1989, at age 20, her career in voluntary community work really got under way when she joined the CFA (Country Fire Authority) as a volunteer with the Launching Place Rural Fire Brigade.

“I originally joined the CFA because I thought it would help my job prospects. The first thing they asked me was can you drive a truck? I answered no - then they asked, do you want to learn? I was trapped.”

Twelve months later Carolyn shifted to Shepparton, where she became the first female to join the local brigade. However after just six months she shifted to Pakenham where she again joined the local service; and this was also followed by a time in the Nar Nar Goon Brigade “I think one of the best things about being a brigade member with the CFA, was learning new skills and teaching others. I received training in general firefighting, as well as accredited training in road accidents and trench rescue.

Along with this I also taught a CFA Youth Crew and participating in various events.”

It was as a result of her Youth Training (Youth Development Program) that Carolyn received a Commendation from the Chief Officer of the CFA With regard to her training in firefighting and road accidents: "I found attending to road accidents more rewarding as we were dealing with people”.

Her full-time employment saw her work for some years for National Parks, based in Treasury Place, Melbourne, and also as a training officer for the SES. Then to further her educa-

During her time at Bendigo, Carolyn in 1987 met Trevor Lansdown, the young man who was to become her husband. They married in 1991 and not long after this they took a leave of absence from their jobs and went backpacking through Europe for six months.

On returning to her normal duties, Carolyn in 2003 obtained her community bronze medallion thus giving her the necessary qualifications to enable her to teach students surf safety.

Then, in 2006, the family which now included two children, a son Lachlan and daughter Emily, arrived in Noosa. Immediately on arrival they joined the Noosa Nippers and after a short time mum and dad joined the senior club and quickly obtained their bronze medallion.

Soon as their children reached bronze age they too joined the senior club and obtained their medallion - thus making the Lansdown clan a fully committed surf club family.

“Yes, Carolyn and I started patrolling in April 2007,” Trevor said. “Now with the kids also doing patrols, three of us have become patrol captains, something of which we are very proud.”

Another mark of pride has been the achievements of their son Lachlan, who on the international level has been winning gold and silver medals as a stock board paddler in both Hawaii and California.

This is no mean achievement as this lad is up against the best in the world.

“To say that we are proud of him is a definite understatement," said his very proud mum.

“He has not only won medals overseas, but also at our state and national level.”

During her time in the Nippers, Carolyn served as a JAC age manager for three years, member of the life saving committee representing the patrol captains, two years on the surf sports committee, during which time she also worked as beach captain.

For the family their home base is Pomona.

Carolyn, who now works out in Imbil, continues her career by conducting classes teaching outdoor education for students from the Brisbane Girls Grammar School.

THE Sunshine Coast needs a community hospice where people who are rapidly approaching the end of life can find relief from pain through excellent palliative care, and where families, friends and carers are also supported through the bereavement.

The setting should be uplifting as its purpose is to prepare the patient for death. Experience is that hospices assuage the fear of dying and evoke contentment. The buildings are of a human scale that enables people to enter unafraid and to find within them a sense of calm supportive order.

The first, St Christopher’s Hospice in London opened in 1967, the first in the USA opened in 1974 and in South Australia in 1988.

The descriptor, hospice, is generally used in the facility’s name.

The modern hospice movement argues that there is a place for a sensitively designed facility providing specialist palliative nursing care where the terminally ill can spend the last days of their lives with the attendance of family and friends.

Our acute hospitals may have specialist palliative care wards; but hospitals are large impersonal institutions whose aim is to cure patients. Death is considered to be failure.

Experience shows that an economically viable hospice would have six to eight in-patient beds in individual suites and cater for respite and out-patient care. As a community hospice it would embrace charity cases and would rely on volunteers to provide support in all areas of operation as well as seeking funding from many sources including from all levels of government, the Department of Veterans Affairs and health insurance organisations primarily on a daily cost reimbursement basis.

In order to be eligible for government, DVA and health insurance funding a hospice has to meet the Queensland Health Department construction code for private hospitals which specifies the facility’s physical aspects such as the provision of clean and dirty utility rooms, etc.

The hospice must also be certified to standards for patient care and facility management such as those published by: Palliative Care Australia; the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards; the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care; and the International Standards Organisation (ISO9001 Quality Management). It is not necessary or desirable for a hospice to be a private hospital or to be a large bureaucratic institution.

I look forward to Sunshine Hospice Limited realising its aim to urgently re-open operations (previously at Katie Rose Cottage, Doonan) as soon as practicable and to achieve accreditation in order to become eligible for government funding.

I HAVE nothing but praise for our athletes and how they performed in Rio. But I've been reading some of the newspapers and some TV reporters' opinions who feel we were let down because of their medal tally.

So really nothing has changed much in the attitude shown to our athletes since we arrived here in 1968. The late Lionel Rose had just become World Champion in his weight division beating Japan's Fighting Harada and was a national hero and the first Aboriginal to hold a world title.

In 1969 he lost the fight and the title to Ruben Olivares. The next day I had to have it explained what the headlines in the papers were referring to with “Lionel Rose goes walkabout." To my thinking a suggestion he walked away from his commitment.

How degrading for any person who within twelve months went from hero to a villain. I repeat nothing changes for the “armchair athletes" which we still have an abundance of.

New boss for chamber FORMER council candidate and lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast Steven Boyd has been announced as the new president of CCIQ Noosa.

Dr Boyd is the program co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Property Economics and Development and a lecturer within the Faculty of Arts, Business and Law at USC and is also a member of the Australian Property Institute and a leader in surf life-saving on the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Beach resident, who was also a Noosa Council candidate at the recent local government elections, is a business owner and takes over from CCIQ Noosa president Peter Chenoweth, who stepped down from the busy role after he took over from local businesswoman Sarah Fisher in 2015.

Dr Boyd said he was keen to “ensure the Noosa experience for generations to come and inspire residents to learn, create and ultimately enable our new economy”.

Mr Chenoweth has been instrumental in putting CCIQ Noosa in the spotlight and leading the drive for fast, alternative broadband connections for local small businesses; pushing council for new convention and cultural centres; and establishing the inaugural

Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF).

“It has been a privilege to serve CCIQ Noosa and particularly with help from more than 60 volunteers, without whom the substantial progress achieved by the chamber would not have been possible. I welcome incoming president Steven Boyd,” Mr Chenoweth said.

“I’d like to thank CCIQ for all its support, including jointly initiating with us on the Chamber Best Practice Forum, through which leading chambers can learn from each other, lift their performance and better serve their members.”

Dr Boyd said he looked forward to working with small business to build on the solid foundation created by Mr Chenoweth and CCIQ Noosa.

“In particular, I commend the chamber and mentoring team for their roles in improving internet connectivity and upskilling our business community.

Further attention in these areas will see the Noosa business community better prepared for new ventures.”

The CCIQ Noosa AGM will be held on Tuesday 13 September from 6pm at the Noosa Convention and Exhibition Centre, 3 Hilton Terrace, Tewantin.

Alarm bells over smoke alarms

By Jolene Ogle MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes has slammed the Government’s new legislation that will see all Queensland homes fitted with interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms.

The legislation, which will roll out over 10 years, requires every QLD home to have the alarms fitted in every bedroom and hallway so no matter where the fire starts, an alarm will sound in the bedrooms to wake the occupants.

The legislation follows recommendations handed down after the 2011 Slacks Creek fatal house fire where 11 people died.

Mr Elmes said the Labor Government’s legislation was costly, cumbersome and “will do nothing to reduce the loss of lives and property from house fires for another decade”.

“It concerns me that under Labor, life-saving legislation comes with a huge price tag which for many people in the Noosa electorate is unaffordable,” he said.

“It is overly complex and will not come into full effect for another 10 years - which achieves only one thing and that is to put people off from making important changes to protect themselves from the devastating impact of fire.”

Mr Elmes said his party’s plan that required residents to swap existing ionised alarms with the recommended photoelectric alarms was better because it would “be implemented in three years, protect residents sooner and was more affordable”.

Mr Elmes said many people in Noosa don’t have “that kind of money to spare” and doubted many residents would make the change-over a

priority due to the 10-year compliance roll out.

“There is a domestic house fire in Queensland every 4.7 hours. By the time Labor’s ambitious plan has been achieved, it is estimated that 20,000 houses will be destroyed by the fire and 200 lives will have been lost,”

Mr Elmes said. “A 10-year buy-in and a convoluted list of over-the-top requirements is nonsense.”

When announcing the new legislation, Fire and emergency Services minister Bill Byrne said Queensland households would be the safest in the country.

“By having the alarms interconnected, it won’t matter which part of a house a fire might start in, the alarm closest to you will sound and if you are asleep, an alarm will sound in your room, even if the area is closed off to the rest of the house,” he said.

“Research shows photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms are the most effective on the market for alerting people to fires early.

“I am proud Queensland is now the national leader on this issue making sure we are doing all we can to keep residents safe.”

Smoke Alarm Legislation - How does it affect you?

There will be a 10-year phased rollout of the legislation to allow ample time for residents to have the alarms installed correctly.

The hardwired interconnected alarms will need to be installed by a qualified electrician.

For rural residents who may have difficulty finding an electrician, there is an option to install photoelectric alarms with a 10-year lithium battery that has the capability to connect with other alarms wirelessly.

All houses being built or significantly renovated will need to comply with the new legislation upon completion after 1 January 2017.

All houses leased or sold will need to comply with the legislation within five years.

All owner-occupied private dwellings will need to comply within 10 years.

Any smoke alarm being replaced after 1 January 2017 must be a photoelectric alarm.

Noosa is low on old favourites top 50 list and only three regions from WA are listed.

CORELOGIC RP Data has released the latest statistics looking at council regions with the highest population of retirees and, surprisingly, neither Noosa nor the Sunshine Coast makes the list.

Victor Harbor, located about 80km south of Adelaide, had the highest proportion of residents aged 65 years of age or older. More than one in three local residents in Victor Harbor (37.9 per cent) were at least 65 years of age.

According to the data, none of the top 50 council regions with the highest proportion of persons aged 65 and older was situated within a capital city area.

Queenscliffe, adjacent to Geelong in Victoria, has the nation’s second highest proportion of residents aged 65 years of age or older at 35.3 per cent.

CoreLogic RP Data’s Cameron Kusher said given this, the regions listed are typically either coastal or regional townships.

Mr Kusher said the insight highlighted within the data is valuable, particularly for local governments.

“Interestingly, very few of these council areas have a large overall population; only seven of the 50 listed council areas had a total population of more than 20,000 persons,” he said.

“Areas that many people think of as retirement hotspots such as the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Cairns and the Surf Coast of Victoria do not appear on the list indicating that these areas have become much more than just locations for retirees.”

Green homes open day for tips THIS Sunday is Sustainable House Day with locals opening their homes to the community to share their tips for a greener home.

Amber and Brett Grimley’s Eumundi home has been listed as one of the top five homes to visit in Queensland on the day.

Designed and partly built by the couple, the home has always had a strong focus on sustainability and affordability.

“Where possible, we’ve used second hand doors and windows, locally milled timbers and eco-friendly products such as Rockcote’s non-toxic paints from Yandina,” Brett said.

“By doing a lot of the work ourselves, it’s taken longer but our mortgage is probably only half of what it could have been otherwise.”

Brett said they would open their house for inspection to show people that some design thought, effort and a change in modern expectations of housing could make housing affordable and reduce the impact that the construction had on the environment.

The house (listed as Maybeoneday) at 26 William Road, Eumundi, will be open for inspection on Sunday 11 September from 10am to 4pm as part of the Sustainable House Day event across Australia.

Focus on wellness

Musician Lee Hardisty will perform as part of Wellness Month at the Original Eumundi Markets this September.

FOR the month of September, the Original Eumundi Markets will focus on health and well-being as they host Wellness Month.

Market operations manager Jan Ammitzboll said the popular event had been running for the last nine years, and offered free wellness activities and entertainment for market visitors every Saturday in September.

“Wellness Month is an opportunity to focus on your mind, body and soul, with a spotlight on nourishing foods, natural products, therapies and active lifestyle choices,” Jan said.

The 2016 event will take place in the Wellness Hub on the second terrace of the Original Eumundi Markets, with musician hosts Lee Hardisty, Andrea Kirwin and Kate Barzdo sharing their good vibes and soothing sounds.

Visitors are invited to take part in free one-hour yoga class at 8am each Saturday morning. The program in-

cludes Zen Thai Yoga Flow with Kari Martin, Traditional Yoga Flow with Rashida Cottrell, and Vinyasa Yoga with Donna Thordarson. Participants are encouraged to wear something comfortable and bring along a yoga mat or towel and water.

The program includes health talks and live cooking demonstrations by naturopath and herbalist Dominique Liv Kamal; Jay Mulder of Ayurvedic Lifestyle Choices; the ‘Two Old Ducks’ Annette Long and Jennifer Hill); local organic producer Michael Joyce; Bernie Duffy; Eric Jaffres; astrologer Chirone Shakti and healer Diana Hunter.

Bush dance TAG show honours founder for animals THE Eumundi Rotary Club will hold a bush dance on Saturday 17 September at the House With No Steps to raise much-needed funds for animal welfare groups.

Funds raised from the dance will go to the RSPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Eumundi, the RSPCA animal care centre in Noosa and the Friends of the Hounds greyhound adoption group.

Everyone is welcome to attend the dance that is sure to be a great night out for the whole family.

There will be supper and sweets, plus a bonfire, damper competition,an animal dressup parade, lots of raffles and lucky door prizes donated by local sponsors.

Entry to the bush dance is $35 per person or $80 for a family of four, children under 12 are $20 and children under two are free.

THE annual Tinbeerwah Art Group show is back for another year, with members busy preparing their works for the two-day exhibition.

The annual art show is dedicated to the memory of the late Gwen Blair who founded the Tinbeerwah Art Group (TAG) in 1997, making it one of the longest running art groups on the Sunshine Coast.

TAG Art Show co-ordinator Jan Cooke said the group had been fortunate to have award-winning artists Noreen Flood, Bob Silver and Kerry Wilson as guest tutors throughout the year.

“They have encouraged us to explore new techniques as well as develop our own individual ideas,” she said.

“This is certainly reflected in the variety of work that will be on display this year. There is something for everyone. Paintings framed and unframed ranging from traditional to contemporary styles in watercolours, acrylics, oils, pastels, charcoal and mixed media all for sale at reasonable prices.”

The Tinbeerwah Art Group (TAG) show official opens on Friday 16 September at 5.30pm, and is a great chance for art enthusiasts to meet artists and discuss their works.

The opening will be held at the Tinbeerwah Hall, on the corner of Sunrise and Cooroy- Noosa Road, Tinbeerwah, on Friday 16 September from 5.30pm, and the show will run from Saturday 17 September from 9am-4pm and again on Sunday 18 September from 10am-3.30pm.

Astounding colours and perfumes

By John Green President Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society THE Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society will hold its spring show at the CWA Hall, Maple Street in Cooroy on 16 and 17 September.

There will be a large array of plants on show and lots more for sale whose colours and perfume will astound. Entry to the fair is $2 per person.

One of the orchids on display is the soft cane Dendrobium. These are one of the easiest orchids to grow in this area.

The plants originate from northern India and grow on deciduous trees. The area has a similar rainfall pattern as the Sunshine Coast; wet summers and dry winters. The plants can be grown in a pot or grown very successfully on a suitable host tree.

They should be watered heavily from November through to the end of March then tional Seniors will be held on Thursday 15 September at 9.15am for a 9.30am start at the Tewantin Noosa RSL. It was a beautiful day at the Noosa Botanic Gardens on Father's Day.

Dads’ fair a growing success IF THE huge attendance at the Father’s Day Plant Fair at the Noosa Botanic Gardens is anything to go by, there is going to be a whole lot of gardening going on in the region this week.

The beautiful spring sunshine brought the families out in huge numbers to enjoy Father’s Day in the picturesque Botanic Gardens on the banks of Lake Macdonald.

Visitors didn’t go home empty handed either with the back seat and boots of cars filled with plants.

Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens’ Plant Fair event manager Jill Brownlee said the support from the local community and the wider region was amazing.

“We estimate the attendance has doubled on last year’s inaugural event,” she said.

Cherry Pip coffee’s Russell agreed.

“This year we doubled our supplies of coffee and milk to last year and we still ran out by lunchtime,” Russell said.

“It’s been a huge success. We’ll have to triple our supplies and staffing next year.”

Attendees didn’t go hungry with food being available from a number of community groups including Cooroy Rotary which had billy tea, damper and a bush poet to keep everyone entertained.

Plant Fair attendees took advantage of the gardening information sessions with seats full of those interested in growing their own edible crops or keeping those pesky insects at bay.

Over at the Shade House, John Green from the Orchid Society fielded lots of questions on how to be successful orchid growers.

Noosa Beach Classic Car Club captured many dads’ attention with itsr display of classic and unique cars.

Net proceeds from the plant fair are redirected back to supporting the Noosa Botanic Gardens.

U.G.L.Y. stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You and describes the entrants in this year Bartender awards which fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Richard Hannay is a young gentleman bored with life who meets a mysterious woman claiming to be a secret agent.

Before long, Hannay is the target of a cross-country manhunt with a shadowy organisation called The 39 Steps on his trail.

For the next 90 minutes this 1930s spy thriller turns into a madcap tour-de-force of situational comedy hijinks complete with runaway spies, keystone cops, speeding trains and search planes, all in a havoc pursuit of alleged murderer Richard Hannay.

Proof that “less is more” this cleverly conceived production also relies on expert directing by Jane Rivers and a strong team of behind the curtain volunteers involved in every aspect of this wonderful production.

The high cost of staying still EVERYONE should ask themselves when was the last time they were active for 60 minutes.

If it was today, well done.

If it was last week, there’s work to be done. If they can’t remember, then they should take this as a wakeup call!

A world-first study released by the University of Sydney last month revealed the true cost of physical inactivity.

In 2013 the total cost burden of physical inactivity on the Australian economy was $805 million, including $640 million in direct costs and $165 million in productivity losses.

Lifestyle diseases and premature death related to physical inactivity not only harm the economy but harm individuals, their friends and family.

A sedentary lifestyle can result in chronic diseases, including some cancers, and also reduce productivity and make people feel sluggish.

It is time to shape up, slim down and get moving for a healthier, happier lifestyle.

1. Stand up for health.

One in three Queensland adults spend their weekdays being sedentary.

It’s important to schedule in time to be active.

At work, implement simple strategies to break up prolonged periods of sitting by taking micro walks or conduct meetings standing up.

After work, go for a walk or run, or take part in a fitness class.

It is recommended that adults aim for 60 minutes of moderate intensity activity every day and children aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.

2. Friends that sweat together, stay together.

When it comes to getting active, research shows that people who have a friend or partner to exercise with find it easier to stay motivated and accountable.

They should find someone they can trust and team up for a healthier future.

Support from a peer can offer positive reinforcement and works to push each other to

achieve their goals. Whether they walk together, run together, lift weights or do yoga together, every bit counts.

3. Switch it up.

For healthy exercise routines, it’s important to diversify workouts.

Include aerobic exercises such as running and cycling to increase heart rate, anaerobic exercises like weight training and muscle strengthening, and exercises that increase flexibility.

Get creative and plan a workout schedule in advance to keep it varied and exciting to maintain interest.

The price of physical inactivity is far weightier than people may realise and can severely affect health in the short and long term.

In addition to that, it is adding a significant burden to the economy.

Make a pledge this week to take small steps towards a healthier, happier future.

Dolphins head in to grand final NOOSA DOLPHINS THE last time the Dowling and Neylan Noosa Dolphins managed to remain undefeated in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union Competition was in 2010, and they’re hoping to do it again this year with the grand final at home this weekend.

Following the do-or-die clash between Caloundra and Maroochydore last weekend where Caloundra Lighthouse smashed Maroochydore 41-3 on their home turf, it could be a closer game than anticipated.

Coach Brett Timms said Caloundra have some impressive forwards who possess

amazing athleticism and agility, but history will show the Dolphins’ high level of fitness and clever play-making has secured the wins over Caloundra.

“However this late into the season, both sides will have a reasonable level of match fitness and may have some players carrying injuries, so really the 2016 grand final could be anyone’s,” he said.

“Our team is well prepared, but to underestimate Caloundra would be foolish. We’ve come this far undefeated so we definitely want to put the silverware on the mantle and are desperate to win it.”

With an estimated atten-

dance of over 4000 people, Noosa supporters are encouraged to don the maroon, white and blue and put their game face on this Saturday to cheer on the Noosa Dolphins at their home ground.

Prizes will be awarded for best game faces and supporter signs and there’s loads of entertainment for the entire family with gates open from noon.

Reserve Grade kick off is at 1.15pm and A Grade is at 3.15pm. A live band will commence post the A Grade game so people are encouraged to stay on and hopefully take part in Noosa’s celebrations.

Admission is Adults $5 at the gate, and children are free.

The Dowling and Neylan Noosa Dolphins are hoping to remain undefeated this season.

By Jules Rosenkranz NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER ROUND 9 of this season saw the Under 11 Noosa Gold team play against Caloundra Green in a loss of 1-3.

Coach Terry Martin said “these two teams will be the final two for the grand final“ and sure enough, seven weeks later Noosa Gold meet Caloundra Green for the grand final at Maroochydore this weekend.

After rain the evening before, a beautiful sunny morning followed and all the families, friends and spectators were prepared with their black and gold colours and the players had a mixture of feelings between joy, excitement and nerves.

Both teams came out playing a very fast and intense game. Hunter Baistow, Hayden Martin, Jude Youens and Tyler Brokamp took control of the midfield, applying extreme pressure on the opposition.

This resulted in Jude Youens scoring a brilliant goal leading into the half time break. Going into the second half saw the force of our forward line, Innocent Sibanda,

Both teams continued to attack, but Noosa was the stronger team resulting in another goal being scored by Jude Youens. At the full time whistle, Noosa Gold had the grand final trophy in their hands – winning 2-0.

Coach Terry Martin said he was extremely proud of the team as they have worked so hard this season and deserved the win.

A big thank you to Noosa Eagles players, familes and friends for their support and looking forward to seeing you in 2017.

It was a great way to end the Noosa Eagles Soccer season on such a high with a grand final win.

This weekend the club will enjoy a morning of presentations, fun and acknowledgments.

And I do mean old. The baby of our group, Karen, was turning 60, while the patriarch, Craig, is entering his middle 80s.

There’s nothing you can do about getting old, and it sure beats the alternative! On this little drive down memory lane, I was delighted to find that the old mates are still sharp as tacks, funny as ever, even if some aren’t paddling out as often as they would like.

John Witzig, who was our first port of call, hasn’t surfed for more than 30 years, but I can still recall his beautiful positioning and graceful style from sessions we shared at Whale Beach, Avalon and The Point at Angourie all those years ago. And even in retirement at his beautiful bush hideaway, the spirit of surfing is still very much a part of him through his incredible archive of photographs that document a wonderful and unique period in Australian surfing history.

Although we communicate regularly, I’d seen John only fleetingly since we celebrated the opening of his exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra two years ago.

I’m happy to report to his many Noosa friends that the old bugger looks two years younger, not older.

Next we headed back up the coast to Byron for a memorable lunch with another mentor of mine, a man I hadn’t seen for almost a decade.

I first met Craig McGregor in the back bar of the old Hotel Canberra in 1972, before it had a facelift and became a Hyatt, when it was always pulsing with pollies and journos.

A well-known writer who also happened to be a surfer, Craig had ghosted This Surfing Life for Midget Farrelly in 1965, and then gone on to write critically acclaimed social criticism and political essays, as well as paeans to his hero, Bob Dylan. Craig was about the closest thing we had in Australia to Tom Wolfe or Hunter Thompson, so naturally he became my role model.

Richard Neville. of our North Coast runs in the late 1970s, and over dinner I was whining that I really wanted to write a good book but working always got in the way. Craig put his wine glass down on the table and looked at me almost angrily. He said: “Stop making excuses. Quit work and write the book.

If you’ve got any talent, the money will come.”

It took a while for the message to sink in, but I think it was the best professional advice I was ever given.

When I flew off to London for the obligatory rites of passage a few months after meeting Craig in Canberra, I had a copy of his Up Against The Wall America in my bag, and I don’t think I’ve missed a book of his since. Over lunch last weekend we traded our latest, and I’ve just started

dipping into his, a novella about love and lust in the Byron hills called Motel, and it looks like a beauty.

Craig doesn’t get about so well since he had a stroke a few years ago, but I was delighted to find at the bottom of an extract from the book published in Rusty Miller’s Byron Guide that he still describes himself as “a writer and a surfer”. Long may he ride ... and write.

The caravan moved on to the southern Gold Coast where friends had gathered from far and near to celebrate the 60th birthday of Karen Neilsen. Seems like only yesterday that Big K had just been crowned Miss Teen International in Japan and become the new squeeze of my buddy and pro surfer Paul Neilsen.

Well, it was 1976, and 40 years later,

they’re still happily married and K still looks like Miss Teen.

It was a great party among good friends, and Paul, Rod Brooks and I managed to survive a recovery surf the next morning, so we must have been well behaved.

Vale Richard Neville A frequent subject of conversation at the lunch and dinner tables during our trip was the sad decline of our friend Richard Neville, suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s at a care facility near Byron.

We’d had dinner with Richard in Byron, along with Rusty and Tricia Miller a few years ago, not long after he’d been diagnosed, and found him in good spirits and as wickedly amusing as he’d always been.

rible of publishing in Byron not long after the London Oz trials, where he’d been represented by the young silk Geoffrey Robertson, had turned him into an international celebrity.

We were all spending Christmas at a friend’s property and were given jobs to do to pay the rent, as it were. That was how I found myself digging a latrine in the hot sun with the avant garde filmmaker Albie Thoms and the protest porn superstar Richard Neville.

We became friends and although I saw him infrequently, Richard had such warmth and wit that you could always pick up where you’d left off.

But not anymore. We were driving home on Monday morning when we heard the news that he’d died on Sunday, aged 74. Another tragic loss.

Clubs in good hands Between the

WITH the commencement of the 2016/17 season of volunteer patrols on our Queensland beaches, all clubs will be under the watchful eye of new state president Mark Fife, OAM. Mark’s appointment to office comes as a result of the retirement of serving President Ralph Devlin AM, QC. Ralph, who also holds the distinction of being Life Member of Queensland Surf Life Saving, gave the state five years of good dedicated service; and for this we thank him most sincerely. He was one of the driving forces behind the recent, very successful Australian Surf Life Saving Titles hosted by his club Maroochydore.

Add to this, Ralph was last season awarded the highest honour in his club – Life Governor. So high is this award that the nomination can only be forwarded by club Life Members; for his years of dedication plus his Life Governorship, all the best in retirement.

Regarding Ralph’s successor, Mark started his career in 1975 when he joined and received his bronze medallion in Batemans Bay NSW. Then in 1986 he saw the light and moved with his family to Queensland where he joined Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

Like all new leaders he has set himself several goals. One in particular is good to hear, and that is, “to lead the SLSQ board and Council into a new era of Surf Life Saving.”

Regarding members, “Be yourself, be vigilant, keep up your fitness; and my door is always open.

One of the highlights of his career is being the only person to have ever won the Australian Lifesaver of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. To win one award is a great effort but to win both is indeed exceptional.

Spring fishing fires up river

Saturday 3 September saw the start of yet another season for the Noosa Seahorse Nippers. This organisation, set up to help Nippers with special needs, is now in its fourth year and the concept goes from strength to strength. Thirty-four children were in attendance with 50 supporters in the work team.

This season, representatives from Bundaberg, Elliott Heads, Bribie, Palm Beach and Tallebudgera were on Main Beach. To organisers Steve and Nicole Mawby - you have made us proud to belong to Noosa.

Two flags for Tigers

By Julian ’Pittsy’ Pitts THE Rococo Bistro and Bar Noosa Tigers have brought home two flags with the under-19 colts and under 13s both winning their respective division two titles.

A Keenan James goal in the final 10 seconds was enough to grant David ‘Tinman’ Carrol and his charges the 2016 premiership cup.

It was a fantastic effort from all concerned, considering at the start of the season player numbers were not looking flash.

The celebrations went into the beginning of this week (as they should) - great stuff boys, you are a massive part of the senior club.

A big congratulations to Damian ’Butch’ Smith’s under -13s who completely dominated their grand final against Nambour at Maroochydore last Saturday.

This was another big, and the improvement among these kids

throughout the season has just been outstanding.

I also must mention the efforts of two of our under 13-girls, Maggie Harmer and Bella Smith, who were a vital part of the premiership win and finished second and third in the league medal respectively.

Well done to all involved - the celebrations were pretty lively at the surf club last Sunday arvo.

Commiserations to our Reserves, under -17s and under -13 girls who all put up fantastic performances only to narrowly fall short at the final hurdle.

To make five grand finals was a huge effort by the Noosa Tigers as we already look to recruit and replenish player stocks for season 2016.

Remember to look at the website for all junior and senior presentation dates which are always a great way to celebrate the season just completed.

WITH the start of spring upon us, fishing has really fired up in the river, off the beach and, of course, offshore.

Good numbers of pan-sized flathead have been caught around the first lake area trolling 60-100mm deep diving lures, give the River2sea live minnow a go, these have a great action perfect for attracting a large lizard. If you are fishing soft plastics, pink is one of the flatheads favourite colours.

Some nice whiting have been on the prowl in the lower reaches of the river on small surface lures like the River2Sea Skinny Dog and baits like live worms, peeled prawns and Yabbies.

Bream are also in good numbers with the bigger fish holding around structure. Greatsized flathead have been caught at the river mouth drifting pilchard baits and live baits on a run out tide and the change of the tide. Make sure you use a good- sized sinker to stir up the sand which flathead love. There has been some good- sized trevally and tailor herding up bait in Woods Bays early morning and late afternoon.

They have been responding well to surface lures like the Lucky Craft Gsplash in the 65mm size. If we see the forecast rain this week, the crabs will be up and walking, fresh mullet has to be one of the top baits. Don’t forget your size, bag limits and mark your pots as fisheries are keeping a close eye on crabbing.

If the weather starts playing the game, angler in smaller craft will be heading for Sunshine Reef where there have been some nice coral trout, sweetlip, squire, and cod. We should start hearing some reports of mackerel around North Reef and Coffees over the next couple of weeks, some rouge fish have already been boated. Tuna are also starting to make a comeback with a couple of cracker fish taken off Little Halls Reef.

NOOSA CROQUET THE Queensland Croquet Association clearly recognises the quality of the Noosa Croquet Club’s lawns as it regularly chooses Noosa for its various championships – the latest being the Ricochet Division 1 Championship over 6 and 7 August. Noosa hosted and managed the event. Sharon O’Toole, assisted by former member Helen Philpott vacationing from Tasmania, did the work.

The greens and surrounds were immaculate thanks to greens keepers Peter Smith and John Olsen.

The championship was won by Gordon Giles of Wynnum.

This past week the club's golf pennant team travelled to Headland-Buderim and handily defeated the league leaders 6 games to 4. The result was close as Noosa scored 61 hoops to Headland’s 56. noosatoday.com.au

Brothers swing high sport today

By Ron Lane APART from returning home with a record breaking nine wins in the recent National Golden Glove Championships, the Impact Boxing Academy has now achieved yet another record that is somewhat unique.

Two brothers, 17-year-old Sam and 16-year-old Ben Cameron-Hands of Pomona, have come home as Golden Glove champions in their respective divisions for three years in a row.

However, their overall total is four championships.

It all started in 2012 when, for the first time, they both won their titles. Then after a break in 2014 they started their three year reign winning in 2014/15/16.

“As far as we know,” said a very proud coach Mark Evans, “this has never been achieved before in the history of Australian amateur boxing.

“It is something that the Noosa Shire should take pride in.”

Sam’s record stands at 68 fights with some 55 victories and for Ben it is 50 plus with 45 wins.

Both are students at the Noosa District High School.

For the boys their career in boxing started when the family settled in the district after migrating from Manchester, England, in 2007.

“It was Ben who started it all,” said the parents.

“Since the age of four he has been obsessed with the sport so after settling here we enrolled him with Mark at the Impact Boxing Academy and, of course, Sam had to be in it too.

“Mark and our family have a great relationship and this is the major factor in the boys’ success - all one big happy family.”

Add to their incredible record as athletes, their personalities outside the ring.

This is a credit to not only their coach but also their parents for in these brothers we have two very quiet, well-spoken and well-mannered young men.

Later this month the Queensland team, of which Sam is a member, will leave for Ireland where they will not only contest international tournaments but also attend high performance training camps.

Among the five from the Impact club who have made the team, will be a young lady Taylah Robinson. Her achievements in the ring are also outstanding.

At the recent National Golden Gloves she won her division.

In part her record now stands at three Golden Glove titles, two Australian, three state, two gold medals from the Poland International

Tournaments and the Black Diamond Gold Medal also in Poland.

The Polish tournaments were contested by fighters from all over Europe.

Regarding the Irish tour, coach Mark Evans said: “Taylah and the team will compete in two international tournaments, one in the city of Clonmel one in Cork, then the team will move to Munster where they will take part in a three day high performance camp.

“Then following this they will fight over three days for the Celtic Cup.” The other Impact fighters who also made the team along with Sam and Taylah are Brock

When we consider the media space that is given to stories of street violence, the taking of ice and the coward’s punch, the achievements of our well-disciplined and successful Noosa Shire athletes should not go unnoticed.

Therefore, it is only right that we should not only take pride in but also celebrate the achievements of all our young athletes, regardless of their sport.

Undefeated junior girls win flag THE under-14 Noosa Dolphins Rugby 7s team have taken out the inaugural season women’s season with a thrilling win over Caloundra.

The team ran undefeated through the season racking up an impressive 16 wins in a row before taking to the field in the grand final on Friday 2 September, and walking away champions with a score of 24 to 12.

Coach Brent Mitchell said the team played exceptionally well throughout the first ever junior women’s competition for the region.

“The best part is each team got better each week,” he said.

“It was great to see, and the

girls really put in the effort coming to training every Sunday.”

Brent said the key to remaining undefeated for the season came down to making the sport fun and enjoyable for the players.

“There’s a saying that girls have to be happy in order to win and that’s something we focused on every week; making sure it was fun,” he said.

Brent said he hoped the players, who secured an average score rate of 25.9 points per game, would return for the 2017 season.

The remaining junior teams also had a great week-

end on the field.

The under-12 Noosa Fins also played at Caloundra this weekend, defeating Matthew Flinders 36-7 taking them into the grand final next weekend against Sunshine Coast Grammar.

The under-14 Dolphins defeated Caloundra with a 22-5 point win, which also puts them into the grand final against Sunshine Coast Grammar.

For the under-16 team, they secured their spot in the grand final after defeating University 31-nil. The grand finals will be held at Stockland Park Stadium on Sunday 11 September.

Congratulations to the rugby 7s Noosa girls team who went undefeated for 16 games this season. The team, who played their first season this year, won the grand final against Caloundra on the weekend, beating them with an amazing score of 24 - 12.

SPIRITS were high as swimmers from Good Shepherd Aquatics Swim Club competed at the Queensland Short Course Championships in Brisbane last weekend and won 16 medals between the 14 of them.

Although not all the swimmers placed in their events, everyone single one of them swam personal best times with several top 10 finishes and other clubs are really starting to take notice of the growing club that’s based at the pool at Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

The youngest member of

the team, 10-year-old Jamison Morgan excelled winning three golds, one silver and one bronze making him the most successful swimmer from the club and one of the most successful swimmers at the championships.

Other highlights were national medallist Arna Couper, aged 17, taking home gold in 200m backstroke, silver in 100m backstroke and bronze in 50m backstroke, 13-yearold Lauren Maguire winning bronze in the 400m freestyle in a huge 10 second PB and Jyah Poad aged 17 winning bronze in the 50m fly.

Dahlas Rogers, 21, who won gold in the 800m and

400m freestyle events and silver in the 200m freestyle, has been selected in the 2020 Towards Tokyo Squad meaning that she has been earmarked

by Swimming Australia as a potential future Olympian.

Coaches Brian Stehr and Peter Diamond have many years coaching experience between them and it is largely due to their dedication that GS Aquatics is starting to see so much success.

The club meets every Tuesday from 5pm from October through to April and welcomes new members.
