Trapped by terror Their home is a prison - bars on windows and CCTV cameras guard the perimeter.

Yet it is the Noble Park woman and her mother that are the victims, waiting terrified of a violent ice-addicted ex-partner to be released back into the community.

The 20-year-old ‘Marilyn’, who did not wish to be identified, has accused the man of kidnapping her several times.

During the abductions, she said she was injected with ice, raped, stabbed and bashed multiple times by various men in a Broadmeadows unit in January and February.

In May, the 27-year-old perpetrator was jailed for 18 months - with a six-month non-parole period - for breaching an intervention order by calling and texting Marilyn 1646 times earlier this year.

He could be out on parole as soon as September.

In the meantime, he has been interviewed by Moorabbin Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team police over the most serious allegations.

They were unable to comment on the allegations or the investigations.

Marilyn’s mother ‘Cheryl’ has written to the Board of Corrections pleading for the man not to be released early.

Cheryl said the man would not adhere to parole conditions or a two-year full intervention order.

He had offended earlier this year despite being on bail and a community corrections order at the time.

He had also just been released from jail for family violence offences. “(Marilyn) said to me that as soon as he gets out, she’s leaving home. We are the victims and we are behind bars.

“What crime have we committed?

“I want him behind bars for a lifetime.”

The victim, who has an intellectual disability, was suffering nightmare flashbacks as she recuperated from her wounds.

She is receiving counselling, drug rehab and chiropractic treatment but it will take a long time to recover, her mother said.

“She has withdrawn from everyone, lost faith, lost trust, has no life whatsoever,” Cheryl stated to the Board of Corrections. “(The man) had practically claimed her life.

“I don’t wish for any mother to go through what I went through, or for any young girl to lose her life like my daughter has,” she told the Board of Corrections.

Cheyl has said the police let them down.

Broadmeadows police had claimed they were too busy to check on the unit in which Marilyn was imprisoned, Cheryl said.

Desperately, Cheryl tracked her down at the unit herself and then rang for police help.

Despite being on a corrections order, the man was released without charge and kidnapped Marilyn again in February, Cheryl said.

“I didn’t think I’d see her alive again. I’d put her clothes away.

“I was thinking I’ll have to identify her body, I didn’t think I’d find her.”

In the midst of the kidnappings, a Springvale police officer applied for an intervention order due to the man repeatedly calling Marilyn and Cheryl, as well as threatening to kill Marilyn and to release a sex tape of her.

The order accused the man of sitting outside her house for seven hours while calling and sending her messages. He threatened to drive the vehicle through the house, the application stated.

“Police have serious concerns for the safety and welfare of the (victim) due to the obsessive and escalating violence exhibited by the (man),” the intervention order application stated.

Cheryl said politicians’ “nice and beautiful words” as they talk against family violence was meaningless.

“You have to enforce it,” she said.

Safety on police radar A safety forum gave Springvale residents and businesspeople the chance to chat one-on-one with local police.

Sergeant David Sims is leading a community engagement focus at Springvale Police Station and spoke at the event, held at the Golden Leaf restaurant in Springvale, on Monday 29 August.

Community members, Greater Dandenong Council leaders and Springvale Asian Businessman’s Association (SABA) members attended.

“Everyone wanted to talk to the police,” Sgt Sims said.

“They don’t really get much of an opportunity to do that.

“Some were asking about what crime was like 10 years ago compared to now.

“They wanted to know what initiatives we are working on.

“They asked how we‘re going with resources.

“In the PSA (police service area) we’ve actually

increased the number of police.

“There’ve been several taskforces set up to tackle specific crime.

“We’re working towards more operations in the pubic area, having more police on the street doing proactive policing.”

Sgt Sims said the event was scheduled to run until 9pm but didn’t finish until 11pm.

“We’re looking at running another one early next year,” he said.

“I really like discussing with people one-onone.”

During his presentation, he told people that property could be replaced and urged them to “avoid injury to yourself or others by fighting off offenders”.

“Instead, hand over. Call police and provide them with as much a description as possible,” he said.

He advised businesses to ensure they had good locks, roller shutters and lighting.

“Lighting is very important both at the front

and rear,” he said.

“CCTV is an invaluable tool for police to not only follow up on your crime but also link any series of crimes together.

“If people are acting suspiciously in the store, approach them and ask if they need help.”

Sgt Sims said ATM users should avoid isolated or unlit areas at night, always conceal their PIN and consider using direct debits instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash.

Sgt Sims urged car owners not to leave valuables in plain sight and to choose parking spaces in lit areas.

At home, use window and sliding door locks, consider having a safe, and install security lights “Security doors are invaluable,” he said.

“Be careful who you invite into your home, and do not confirm you are alone.

“Do not allow people access to your home unless you are 100 per cent sure who they are.”

One year in the pool, and things are looking bright

By Casey Neill A Dandenong pool has celebrated one year of getting blind and visually impaired children into the water.

“These children came to us as nervous, raw beginners and after a very rewarding year they have transformed into independent swimmers,” North Lodge Swimming Academy’s Leanne Byron said.

“They are performing fantastic torpedos and are now developing freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke with very good technique.”

The head coach and managing director said the swimmers and instructors involved had plenty of fun, too.

“There are always smiles and laughter all around during our swimming sessions,” Ms Byron said.

“We have seen a huge boost in their self-confidence and vibrant personalities.

“Each and every one of us has formed a very special bond.”

The pool partnered with Rotary Club of Dandenong South East last August to deliver the weekly voluntary swimming lessons, individualised for each child.

Berwick school Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired and Blind Sports Victoria also support the project.

“Together we have achieved so much. It’s exciting to think about what we will achieve over next year,” Ms Byron said.

They celebrated the milestone at the pool on Saturday 27 August.

“Many thanks to the Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dandenong South East for putting on the barbecue, which was enjoyed by all the hungry swimmers and their families,” she said.

Ms Byron hopes to grow the program by introducing participants of all ages - including adults - to the aquatic environment who might not otherwise have the opportunity to take part in a swimming program.

After the program’s first session, Ms Byron said the children had other challenges in addition to their vision problems, including autism, fragile X syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

‘Welcome to Dandenong’ assault A 19-year-old man required surgery following a vicious unprovoked assault in Dandenong.

Dandenong CIU detectives said the victim was walking on Princes Highway on Wednesday 24 August and turned onto Scott Street about 7.30pm.

Five men jumped out of a parked car - believed to be a silver Honda Accord from 2000 or older - when he passed a vacant block.

They approached the victim and one said: “This is Dandenong, welcome to Dandenong” before punching him in the face.

The victim dropped to the ground and the men kicked and stomped on him until one said “stop”.

The teen required surgery to repair two breaks to his jaw. He had several teeth knocked out and received significant bruising to his forehead.

The attackers were perceived to be of Middle Eastern appearance and aged between 17 and 25 years with slim to medium builds, dark features and thick accents.

Empty handed clean getaway A sprung would-be clothes thief left his loot strewn across a Dandenong North lawn.

He entered a Janice Grove home through an unlocked front door just after 8pm on Sunday 28 August.

Police allege he picked up a plastic washing basket full of clean clothing and walked out of the house.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, saw the front door open and peered outside to find his washing in the hands of the intruder.

The would-be thief verbally abused and threatened the homeowner, threw the washing basket at the front door and walked away, leaving clothes scattered across the front lawn.

New route ride

By Casey Neill A new bus route is giving 10,000 people a chance to ride.

Keysborough South Action Group spokeswoman Nina Kelly said the Route 709 bus served residents who previously had no public transport access within four kilometres.

She was pleased to see eight passengers on the second bus heading west on the route’s first day, Sunday 28 August.

“Keysborough South Action Group encourages residents to hop on the bus to ensure that the route will be extended further down the track to the lower half of the new estates,” she said.

Ms Kelly said there were “still a few things to tweak”.

“The group is continuing to lobby the council to install bus shelters at both stops at the north end of Perry Road near Church Road,” she said.

“These two locations are extremely exposed, as high winds funnelling down the road from the

Dandenong Bypass and Melbourne Water land.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said he still had concerns over the coverage and frequency.

“The initial route does not link the new shopping centre and already-built bus stops in the south part of Perry Road and instead uses the narrow stretch of the eastern part of Keylana Drive.

“I have already had complaints!” he said.

“But the frequency was better than expected and better than many bus routes in Greater Dandenong.

“Hopefully it will whet the appetite of residents and provide a case for a re-routed or second bus route along the south end of Chapel Road, along Hutton Road and up Perry Road.

“A route along Hutton Road also has the potential to link to jobs in Dandenong South.”

The new Route 709 runs from Noble Park station to Mordialloc station via Keylana Drive, Westwood Boulevard and Perry Road in Keysborough South, and Bloomfield Road in Noble Park.

New police unit strikes drugs trade

Two alleged cannabis growers and five people wanted on warrants have fallen to a new southeast police taskforce in just one week.

The Journal reported last week that Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin had established a 20-strong divisional response unit to tackle drug crime in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

On Wednesday 31 August, he said that in the past week the fugitive team arrested five people wanted on outstanding arrest warrants in Noble Park, Berwick, Endeavour Hills and Pakenham.

Investigators executed a search warrant on Tuesday 30 September in Hay Court, Noble Park, where they found a clandestine hydroponic set-up.

Police arrested two men at the scene, Sen Sgt Bergin said, and seized a large quantity of cannabis.

The 26-year-old and 33-year-old were remanded Tuesday night to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Sen Sgt Bergin encouraged residents to keep

an eye out for signs of cannabis-producing hydroponic grow houses and clandestine laboratories, generally used to manufacture ice.

“We obviously rely on public information,” he said.

He said the usual signs of a lab included people entering and leaving a property at odd hours, strong chemical odours - often similar to cat’s urine - unusual noises, and dumped chemicals or chemical bottles.

Sen Sgt Bergin said usual signs of drug trafficking included people attending addresses for short periods of time, and people loitering in cars or on foot.

He said observed patterns of times, dates, descriptions of cars, registrations, suspects and addresses could help police.

“I think it’s fair to say that the whole division is impacted greatly by drug-related crime,” he said.

“We’re hell-bent on targeting that.”

100 years ago 31 August 1916 Medal awarded Our readers will be please to know that a Dandenong Boy has been awarded a medal for bravery on the battlefield, vis Lance Corporal Norman L Greaves.

His Mother, Mrs E A Greaves, who resides in Pultney Street, has received a letter from the nurse whose ward he is in at Kingswood Park Hospital, Kent, stating that he received a gunshot wound in the right arm, above the elbow. Although perhaps not serious, the wound is likely to take a long while to heal.

50 years ago 6 September 1966 Gay theme at football club ball Multi-hued balloons and a cool green garden stage setting created a festive backdrop for

Waverly Football Club’s gala Miss Football Quest wind up ball in Springvale Town Hall last week, and great interest was centred on the announcement of the attractive title winner. The Miss Football 1966 title went to petite, dark-haired Margaret Johnson of Ashburton.

Margaret was a youthful picture in a flowing, full-length aqua chiffon empire-line gown offset by a diaphanous front floating panel.

She wore complementing aqua-tinted gloves and carried a silver handbag to match her shimmering silver shoes.

As well as her main prize of a return trip to Surfers’ Paradise she received a swim suit and sunsuit by Cole of California, hosiery by Holeproof and hair styling by James Johnson of Glen Waverley.

20 years ago 2 September 1996 200 year project

The first stage of Bunurong Memorial Park has been officially opened by the Minister for Health Mr Knowles.

The 121 hectare site in Frankston-Dandenong Road, Bangholme, developed by the Cheltenham Cemetery Trustees, is expected to serve Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs for the next 200 years.

Mr Knowles unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 24-hectare first stage of the development. “The trustees, management and staff have turned a vision into reality with an outstanding example of sensitive cemetery design,� he said. “The trust has spent $10.6 million and intends to spend a further $5 million on building and landscape works.�

Bunurong will initially provide lawn burials, cremation, in-ground vaults, traditional monumental burials, wall niches and garden set-

tings for cremation memorials.

5 years ago 5 September 2011 Residents smarting over new meters Residents in the City of Greater Dandenong are ready to go to war with their electricity providers over the installation of the State Government’s new smart meters.

Four households in Caledonian Court, Keysborough, have put signs on their electricity boxes forbidding energy companies from upgrading their meters, under threat of legal action.

But one resident has gone even further and is fighting the installation tooth and nail.

Irene Tapais, 74, has padlocked her electricity box and put in a plastic window that will let electricians take a reading without having to open it.

Only one of the grand hotels left The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

THERE were four hotels on the west side of Lonsdale Street.

The open bluestone drains were so wide and deep along that side of the main street that the Dandenong Shire Council had to build single arched iron crossovers with wooden slats so that businesses could cart goods to and from their shops.

An access bridge was placed strategically outside each hotel along Lonsdale Street.

There were also those same crossovers in Cleeland Street to access the house driveways.

The wooden barrels of beer came to the Dandenong rail yards in large open rail trucks, sometimes with canvas covers over them.

The rail trucks were drawn by steam engines

BACK JACK JOHNSON owned by the Victorian Railways which serviced all of Victoria.

The barrels came from breweries in Melbourne and Ballarat and were picked up from the station and delivered to the four hotels in Lonsdale Street

by Mr Paydon and his horse-drawn wagon.

Mr Paydon’s first delivery was to the Bridge Hotel, down near Foster Street.

The only remaining hotel out of the four in Lonsdale Street in the time of our childhood will be the lovely old Albion Hotel minus its balcony.

Mr Paydon’s next delivery was to the Royal Hotel on the south-west corner of Lonsdale and Walker streets.

This was the third Royal Hotel and the last remaining one when we were kids.

It is now gone and on the site is the four-storey AMP building. This site is diagonally opposite the 1890s town hall.

Next was the modern style Club Hotel on the south-west corner of Lonsdale and Scott streets.

It was built on the site of the 1866 Shamrock Hotel.

This was later refurbished and renamed The Club and that name was re-used for the modern Club Hotel.

Today a four-storey building of pre-cast concrete construction stands on this site and is the National Bank building.

The Albion Hotel was a couple of doors along from Scott Street. It still stands today minus its verandah and balcony and is on the site of the original timber building called the Mornington Arms Hotel.

The two-storey handmade brick Albion was built in 1891 and named after the Albion Hotel in Bourke Street, Melbourne.

It was from here that the Cobb and Co coaches left for Dandenong and Gippsland.

Today when at the show or the races or watching TV, I see those beautiful Clydesdale horses pulling the Carlton Brewery wagonload of wooden beer barrels. It takes me back 75 years to when we, as boys, stood in Lonsdale Street and watched Mr Paydon driving his magnificent horses and wagon up to the front of the Albion Hotel.

He would roll the barrels of beer off the wagon, down a ramp, across the bridge and footpath to the open trapdoor and down another ramp into the underground cellar.

Mr Paydon ran his carrying business from his house in Clow Street.

His horse paddock was on the corner of Clow Street and the Melbourne Road hill.

Doctor Boileau (Sir Gilbert) would build his house and practice on that land after he moved from Westwood in Walker Street.

After the Boileau house was demolished, a modern furniture show room was built on that land and today it contains Hungry Jack’s.

Empty unit arson probe A suspicious fire destroyed a vacant weatherboard home in Dandenong and threatened neighbouring units.

Emergency services arrived at the scene in Benga Avenue about 10.25pm on Saturday 27 August.

CFA experts and Victoria Police arson chemists deemed the fire suspicious.

Neighbour Greg Norton was watching the football when he smelled smoke.

“Then our smoke detectors went off,” he said.

“I looked out the front. I knew it wasn’t coming from our place.

“I could see a lot of smoke out the front door.

“I could see the flickering of the flames.”

Mr Norton yelled out to his wife, who was upstairs, to get out of the house and to move her car from the garage that abutted the burning house.

He called triple-zero about 10.15pm.

“They were here very quickly. The new fire station is just around the corner,” he said.

His home is on a block with three other units.

“The way the wind was blowing was towards the front. We copped most of the smoke,” he said.

“The flames were heading towards our unit as well.

“We’ve got a young Vietnamese couple and they’ve got two very young kids.

“Unit three behind us have a young child, too.

“I went up and banged on the windows to make sure everybody else was out.”

The children got into Mr Norton’s wife’s car to keep warm.

“We watched the firefight take place. We couldn’t do anything else,” he said.

They returned inside their homes about 1am.

“The police remained there all night in the divvy van,” he said.

“They were relieved in the morning.

“The forensic team had been down. Whoever lit it used accelerant so they were coming down to check where it started.”

Mr Norton said the smell of smoke lingered inside his home days later.

“We were all safe and that was the main thing,” he said.

vised that the owner would need to demolish the home.

“It’s been vacant since we’ve been in there.

We’ve been in there since December,” he said.

Constable Tony Lavars said police believed squatters had been living in the house.

He urged anyone with information about the fire or who saw anyone in the area before or after the blaze to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Panel to reduce risk to victims

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s the nightmare situation almost impossible to protect victims.

It’s the man stewing in prison determined to kill or harm his partner as soon as he gets out, describes South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA) chief executive Carolyn Worth.

Ms Worth said just because offenders spend time in jail doesn’t mean they are rehabilitated.

“If they decide to come after someone when they leave jail they’ll offend again in three hours.

That’s when the partners and children are in serious risk.

“If someone is really determined to hurt you or kill you, if they’re disturbed and really violent ... you’re right to be worried.”

Ms Worth said most offenders, however, respond to intervention orders and respond to being talked to by police.

For the others, successful protection of victims relies on prompt reporting to police and quick reactions by police.

“The challenge is where the police don’t know there is a breach of parole because of the communication system (between agencies) but that has been tightened up.”

Part of the tightening up has been the statewide adoption of the RAMP (Risk Assessment and Management Panel) system.

It’s designed to help keep perpetrators at “the most pointy end” in view and accountable, and keeping safe the women and children under “serious and imminent” threat.

A panel in Melbourne’s south-east has been recently convened.

It includes police, corrections, child protection, specialist mens and women’s family violence services, housing, mental health, alcohol and drug services and Child FIRST. The monthly meetings chaired by a senior police officer and a senior family violence agency manager look at five new cases under a strict code of confidentiality.

No documents can leave the room, without being shredded - as an extra layer of protection for victims.

A comprehensive risk assessment and co-ordinated action plan between the agencies is drawn up to protect the partners and kids.

Pauline Wright, senior manager of Berry Street’s domestic violence service, was involved in the successful RAMP pilot two years ago.

She co-chairs a north east metropolitan panel.

Ms Wright said the pilots showed that a multiagency approach kept the perpetrator in view.

“That’s really important. If police can’t locate him, the risk remains very high for the women.”

The meetings work out effective safety measures, such who is keeping the perpetrator accountable and how they will be kept to account, Ms Wright said.

“Our partners in Child Protection and Victoria Police have the powers we don’t have.”

Other agencies are made accountable for ensuring women and children are kept safe.

The state government has committed to implementing 227 recommendations handed down by the recent Royal Commission into Family Violence.

In the 2016 budget, it committed $572 million to a family violence package delivering 62 of the measures.

A government spokesman said the family violence system was being overhauled “from the ground up”.

“We will put victims at the heart of our reforms and make perpetrators accountable for their behaviour change.”

One of the measures is a $152.5 million program to create 130 social housing homes for women and children fleeing from abusive relationships.

Specialist family violence services’ crisis support and counselling, as well as legal services for victims, more men’s behaviour change programs have also received a $100 million-plus funding boost.

Gates open into a safer place

By Casey Neill Dandenong Gatehouse has spent the past year building resilience and social connectedness in young women.

Since it opened its doors, through its Young Women’s Project the centre has helped about 70 Greater Dandenong women to reduce their risk of commercial sexual exploitation.

The women come from a range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and are aged 12 to 25.

Project manager Robynne Jeisman explained that commercial sexual exploitation referred to a commercial gain taking place out of a power imbalance.

“It’s commonly described as ‘sex for exchange’,” she said.

“They’re homeless, they need a place to stay.

They think they’re just staying at someone’s house.

“But the expectation is ‘I gave you somewhere to sleep, now you give me something’.”

She said another example was a ‘boyfriend’ shouting meals and gifts.

“The boundaries keep getting blurred,” she said.

“It’s really about power.”

Other service providers refer young women believed to be at risk to Dandenong Gatehouse.

“Anyone can refer. Young people sometimes bring their friends,” she said.

The Young Women’s Project includes one-onone outreach and therapeutic support, mentoring through community volunteers, group work and more.

Ms Jeisman said the centre had just introduced secondary consultations.

“We don’t have to necessarily need to meet the young woman to be supporting the young woman,” she said.

“We only have two full-time staff, the rest are part-time.

“If we can help to build capacity in the village of that woman... through a grandma, school teacher, netball coach ...

“We hear their perspectives on things, then we consult and offer our advice.”

St Kilda Gatehouse CEO Penelope Smith explained that the Young Women’s Project was an extension of the St Kilda service, with the same objective but a different focus.

“St Kilda Gatehouse is going to have its 25th anniversary next year,” she said.

“It was born out of a real desire and interest around women and social isolation.

“It does focus on street sex work.”

But social inclusion and connectedness are behind the work at both services.

Ms Jeisman said social isolation affected every

part of society and was the biggest contributor to sexual exploitation. She said social inclusion was about consistency.

“The recruitment of volunteers can be quite a difficult task,” she said.

“We actually require long-term consistency and commitment.

“We’re all busy, which means social isolation has increased.

“To address that isolation we’re saying ‘we need your time and consistency’.”

Ms Smith said: “The young people need a village. It’s an old-fashioned idea that just rings true.”

“If you’re a young woman who has trust issues because adults around you have let you down... it’s like a no-brainer in my mind,” she said.

“The consistency is so important.”

Ms Smith said the girls the project helped ranged from “the stereotypes to next door neighbours”.

“Sexual exploitation is not about a race or a socio-economic status or an education level,” she said.

“It affects every area of life because it’s about power imbalance.”

George and Rosina Scaunich started Keysborough Egg Farm more than 40 years ago with about 40,000 chooks.

Today their son David is at the helm, the business is 900 metres from the original farm, and they have half a million chickens.

David said a third generation of the Scaunich family was now making its way into the business.

“Maybe one day they might want to take over, too,” he said.

“As a family business we just want to give that service to our customers, to our community.

“We’ve been here a while, we want to be here a long time.”

He officially got involved about 30 years ago.

“I’ve been involved all my life. I grew up in the business, I was born in the business,” he said.

“Mum’s still very much involved. Dad likes to overlook the week-to-week bits and pieces.”

Keysborough Egg Farm is at Greens Road and Pacific Drive.

“Our core business on-site is supplying the general public with the finest quality produce in the area,” he said.

“We distribute eggs state-wide and we distribute meat and poultry to local businesses - cafes, restaurants, takeaways, other butchers.

“This place has been here for five years.

“We had a farm there with well over 150,000 chickens laying eggs.

“It was established in 1973, 900 metres down the road.

“We had a shop there which was up and running. Many people knew of us.

“Suburbia’s caught up with us. We no longer have the farm there.

“We had to shut down pretty quickly.”

When they reopened eight months later, most

he said.

“We do dry-aged beef. That’s hugely popular.

“It’s 42 days old and aged on-site. People can see it in the cabinet downstairs as it happens.”

David said 60 per cent of customers were local and the rest travelled from further afield.

“I trust the customer to come in and try the stuff,” he said.

“If they’re happy, they’re going to come back.”

He said food-themed television shows like MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules were inspiring home cooks.

“We really do take notice of the cooking shows and try to supply what these shows are producing,” he said.

“In future, we’re going to have our own cooking demonstrations in-store and recipes.”

He said the local culinary landscape was evolving and that Greater Dandenong’s growing multicultural population was playing a part.

Customers and staff reflected the evolution, he said.

“My parents are migrants as well, so we wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said.

Keysborough Egg Farm employs up to 20 people on weekends.

“It’s pretty much the same staff that we’ve had over the last 10 years,” David said.

“It’s a family business. It’s family.

“You spend three quarters of your week at work.

“If you’re going to turn up to work and you’re not going to be happy it’s not going to work for you.”

David hinted that some exciting in-store changes were on the way, but wasn’t ready to reveal exactly what they would be.

London calls a young scientist

Cool cash for primary kids' classes Wallarano Primary School students will beat the heat this summer thanks to a Greyhound Community Fund grant.

Last October the school received $3000 for entertainment at its fete from the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and Greyhounds Entertainment initiative.

Fund-raising co-ordinator Debra Arztenhofer said the fete raised enough money to allow the school to provide air-conditioning in its new buildings.

“In the past if we had three or four hot days in a row the heat wouldn’t dissipate and it would just get hotter and hotter as the day wore on,” she said.

“It wasn’t very good for the children and their learning because they were so hot from the moment they arrived and couldn’t keep their attention.

“It was so bad at times that there were parents who would pick their kids up at lunch time because it was just too hot.

“Now the rooms are much more comfortable, which obviously greatly benefits the children and

staff.”

Sandown Greyhound Racing Club chairman Geoff Dawson toured the school and said it was a very impressive facility.

“We are happy to be able to provide assistance to the school community and we’re glad that it has made a real difference for the kids,” he said.

Cash from the Greyhound Community Fund is available to non-profit organisations that provide health, recreation and community events that benefit Greater Dandenong.

Other organisations that have so far received funding include Rotary Club of Noble Park, Multiple Sclerosis, Springvale Learning and Activity Centre (SLAC), Dandenong West Community Hub, 3rd Noble Park Scout Group, Keysborough Cricket Club and South Eastern Legacy Group.

Noble Park’s Jasmine Bower joined budding scientists from around the world at a knowledge and networking feast in London.

The Keysborough College Year 12 student and about 16 other Australians attended the London International Youth Science Forum from 27 July to 10 August.

The 17-year-old and almost 500 students from 75 different countries stayed in dormitories at Imperial College London and heard from Nobel Prize winners, watched debates and participated in question and answer panels.

“Every day we’d have lecture with everyone in The Great Hall,” Jasmine said.

“And we had a specialist visit. I got to go and see Oxford University and its department of zoology.”

There were social events and dances, and a little time for sightseeing, and Jasmine made plenty of friends and connections.

She was exposed to different areas of science and the interaction between science and industry.

“I spent a whole day at Airbus and got to see all the engineering, all the construction of some of the planes,” she said.

With help from the Rotary Club of Noble Park, in January Jasmine attended at two-week National Youth Science Forum summer camp at the Aus-

tralian National University in Canberra.

From there she had the opportunity to apply to attend an international forum.

“I’ve always been interested in science,” she said.

“My dad studied medicine as well.

“Dinner table conversations have always been about science and things like that.

“Being exposed to science from an early age definitely led me in that direction.”

Jasmine hopes to study a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University next year, and eventually complete a doctorate of veterinary medicine and become a veterinary surgeon.

“This trip helped me because I got to see a lot of zoology, which I’m really interested in,” she said.

“I think that’s sparked an interest for me in my career and tertiary studies.

“My new connections will help with placements and references.

“I have a lot of pets. My dad has a hobby farm with alpacas and sheep and stuff. I have two dogs and two cats.”

She’s looking forward to university life and is considering a semester abroad as part of her studies.

“I’d like to go to Germany,” she said.

“I don’t get homesick. I didn’t struggle at all.”

Police urge drivers to stay sharp

By Casey Neill Highway Patrol police have urged all drivers to be aware of road users around them.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts urged drivers: “When a light turns green, don’t just take it as gospel that nothing’s coming - take a look.

“You don’t want people getting paranoid, but these things do happen and the public has to be

aware of it,” he said.

Sen Sgt Roberts also told the Journal that there’d be additional resources from the State Highway Patrol on Greater Dandenong roads during spring.

“Greater Dandenong has been identified as a high risk area, particularly for bicycle riders and pedestrians,” he said.

Officers will be ensuring cars maintain a safe distance from push bikes when passing them and that they obey the speed limits.

“They’re as competitive as anybody but they are so supportive of each other, including opposition,” he said.

“They just want to see each other do well.

“It’s not all about sledging and ‘win at all costs’.

It’s about competing and the social aspects.”

Mr Guinane’s 25-year-old son has autism.

“For a lot of years there you just didn’t know where to go,” he said.

“You don’t know what exists until you have to go looking for it, I suppose.

“It was only five years ago that we discovered Special Olympics.

“He found his thing with his 10 pin bowling and that’s what he loves.

“You just wish you found it earlier, that’s all.

“It’s a real outlet for parents as well as the athletes. It’s a whole new world.”

There are Special Olympics organisations across Australia working to transform the lives of people with an intellectual disability through regular sport, competition and personal development.

It would have taken the Dandenong and Casey Special Olympians a year of sausage sizzles and chocolate drives to raise the cash it received from State Trustees last month.

“It came as a terrific surprise to us. It came out of the blue,” chairman Mark Guinane said.

“We’re very, very grateful. It was in excess of $5000.

“I believe it’s their workplace giving, which is amazing for the people that work there.

“The beneficiaries are our intellectually and physically disabled athletes that take part in bowling, athletics, basketball, tennis - a whole range of sports.”

The donation came through the State Trustees’ workplace giving program, Wholehearted Giving, which encourages employees of Victoria’s public trustee to make regular salary donations.

The Dandenong Casey Titans were one of three beneficiaries this year to share $16,200.

“I can’t say enough how grateful we are. It’s just marvellous,” Mr Guinane said.

“This sort of thing really blows you away.”

They put the money towards new uniforms and travel costs associated with the TransTasman tournament due to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, in November.

“Most of our money comes out of mums and dads’ pockets,” Mr Guinane said.

“We would be doing a heck of a lot of fundraising to achieve that.

“People have big hearts, is what it comes down to.”

He said the group recently rebranded from Dandenong Valley Special Olympics to Dandenong Casey Titans.

“We’ve got upwards of 100 athletes over various sports,” he said.

From basketball to bocce, 10 pin bowling, tennis and swimming, athletes take part in competitions across the state.

Members come not only from Greater Dandenong and Casey, but Cardinia and beyond.

“We recently had our state games, which involved ten pin bowling and basketball,” Mr Guinane said.

Scissors threat at supermarket

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A homeless man, unwelcome at his Narre Warren address, has been jailed for threatening to stab security staff with scissors at a supermarket in June.

Jesse Limb, 21, yelled “Oh my God!” as he was led away into the cells after receiving his eightmonth sentence at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 August.

According to a police summary, Limb threatened to stab a security guard if he didn’t “stop following me” in a Dandenong supermarket on 8 June.

About 6.50pm, the guard called police, and was approached by Limb at the supermarket entrance.

The accused pulled scissors out of his jumper and pointed them at the victim one metre away and said: “I swear, stop following me or I’ll stab you.”

Two hours later, Limb tried to steal sunscreen and an electric toothbrush from a Chemist Warehouse in Dandenong.

When a guard asked Limb about the suspicious bulge in Limb’s jacket, the accused screamed and yelled.

Limb was chased out of the shop, yelling out a threat to stab his pursuers. He returned the items

and ran away.

He then returned to Chemist Warehouse with scissors, yelling “I’m going to stab you” and kicked locked glass doors.

The court was told Limb, who claimed he had been recently bashed in a Dandenong boarding house over a drug debt, was being case managed for an intellectual disability.

He was due to become a father in several months, and had been working in Port Phillip Prison gardens since being remanded in early June.

“He’s keen to demonstrate he can comply (with corrections orders) and get out to take care of his family,” Limb’s lawyer said.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Limb was a young offender with mental health issues who had been incarcerated for several months last year and had absconded from a corrections order four weeks after his release.

Ms O’Donnell said she didn’t want to impose a crushing sentence and hoped he received mental health treatment before being released from prison.

Limb was jailed two months for breaching his corrections order and six months for the new offences.

Bypass chaos after vehicles crash A collision between two cars and a truck landed a woman in hospital and caused hours of traffic chaos on the Dandenong Bypass on Wednesday 31 August.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Sergeant Darren Barnard said the incident occurred about 7.40am. Sgt Barnard said a 29-year-old Bayswa-

ter North woman was travelling west, away from Dandenong, on the Dandenong Bypass in Keysborough. He said she was near Perry Road and moving slowly due to slow-moving traffic in front of her when another vehicle struck hers from behind. The other car impacted hers on the driver’s side and sent her left across two lanes of traffic.

Nurse bags two PapScreen awards A Springvale nurse has been applauded for her contribution to cancer prevention.

Van Dang took home two awards from the PapScreen Victoria Nurse Cervical Screening Provider Awards.

The first recognised that she completed the highest number of Pap tests in 2015, with 868.

She received additional praise because many of her patients at All Care Medical Practice and Dorevitch Pathology in Springvale were from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Ms Dang was also named the Quality of Practice winner, an honour she also received in 2013.

More than 97 per cent of the samples she collected were from the site where cervical abnormalities are usually found.

Ms Dang said the secret to her practice was to ensure her patients had regular screenings.

“For every woman I have seen, I always make sure that she understands the phrase, ‘every woman, every two years’ and to not wait for something

to go wrong then get checked,” she said.

The awards recognised the contribution nurse cervical screening providers made to cervical cancer prevention.

PapScreen Victoria program manager Hiranthi Perera said many women preferred to see a nurse, in particular another woman, for their Pap tests.

“Thanks to nurse cervical screening providers, women have more options and better access than ever to this potentially life-saving test,” she said.

“When a Pap test every two years can reduce the risk of cervical cancer by 90 per cent, nurses’ contribution to engaging more women to screen cannot be understated.”

Ms Perera said that about 80 per cent of women diagnosed with cervical cancer had either never had a Pap test or had not had them regularly in the 10 years prior to their diagnosis.

“There’s simply no better reason for women to make sure they are up-to-date,” she said.

Making community health care work Berwick Integrated Care (BIC) has been established by a team of well-respected surgeons, originally from Casey Surgical Group, who have worked in the region since 1980.

“We know from years of experience in the area that there has been a real need for a central healthcare resource for patients where they can access multiple specialists in one place and at one time,” said Leigh Reeves, breast and general surgeon and joint director of BIC. “BIC can assist local GPs when specialist management is required and make life much easier for patients.”

A $15 million program is offering TAFE places to 3000 asylum seekers and refugees over the next two years.

For the first time, refugees with temporary protection visas will also be eligible for the State Government’s Asylum Seeker VET Program.

The government currently provides funding for about 300 eligible asylum seekers each year and exempts them from the usual citizenship criteria so they can undertake training.

Under the new project, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) will refer asylum seekers and eligible refugees to do their training at Victorian TAFEs, private training providers and through the Learn Local network.

The ASRC will also provide additional support and professional development to training providers working with asylum seekers and refugees.

Customised language and literacy programs will be offered to participants to improve their reading and writing skills.

An Integrated VET Learning Plan will help them to attain qualifications in the community where they live.

Friends of Refugees spokeswoman Sri Samy said the initiative would assist people in limbo.

“Other states should also follow suit,” she said.

“This will give people seeking asylum and refugees on temporary visas to take part in the work force and lead an independent life rather than relying on charities and handouts to lead their day to day life.”

Ms Samy said that in the past, Dandenongbased Friends of Refugees had found that most funded organisations only assisted people with an English level over four with pre-employment and training.

“However, based on the people that we assist every day we find that over 40 per cent of people

seeking asylum have English skills less than level four,” she said.

“Friends of Refugees mainly fills in the service gaps that funded organisations are unable to do, so we have a small scale pre-employment training program for people with limited English.”

On its Facebook page, the ASRC said that for the past five years it had been pioneering the only TAFE program for people seeking asylum in Australia.

“We’ve placed 751 people into TAFE with a 92 per cent success rate,” the post said.

“On the back of this success they (the State Government) are now investing in a state-wide response.”

ASRC said the TAFE places would be in areas such as hospitality and aged care.

“The ASRC will manage 1000 of these places and also take the lead in strengthening the capacity of the Victorian TAFE sector by sharing our ground-breaking model through training and running a help line,” the post said.

“Victoria is the only state where people seeking asylum can access TAFE. “The challenge to other governments now is to follow Victoria’s lead and recognise that further education is a ticket to a better life and a stronger community.”

Victoria is home to about 11,000 asylum seekers and refugees with temporary protection visas.

Many of these people will soon transition to new visas that require them to work and study so that they can apply for further substantive visas.

Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said the training would help recipients to “get a proper job, to reach their ambitions and full potential so they can play a productive role in the Victorian workforce”.

“People come here looking for a fair go - and we’ll do everything in our power to give it to them,” he said.

Chisholm Institute automotive students are restoring a car to raise money for scholarships.

ACM Parts donated the Toyota Corolla, which the Dandenong-based students will repair and restore using ACM’s recycled and certified parts.

The finished vehicle will go under the hammer later this year.

ACM Parts CEO Mike Kirkman said the project would help to secure the future of the best and brightest in the automotive sector.

“ACM Parts has a responsibility as one of the largest car parts supplier in Australia to make sure the automotive industry has a steady supply of leaders in mechanical and collision repair,” he said.

“Education and hands-on experience are the crux of any career and we are thrilled to be able

to support the future of Chisholm’s automotive students with scholarships funded through this donation.”

Chisholm executive director Andrew Kong said the project was an excellent example of what a strong partnership with industry could achieve.

Rotary Club of Dandenong president Susan Collier built a hand that is now giving a 15-year-old Cambodian girl back her independence, confidence and self-esteem.

All it took was about $400 and an hour of her time.

The Rotary clubs have been involved with the Helping Hands project for just over a year.

They seek sponsorship and help to build artificial hands for landmine victims in Cambodia.

Dandenong’s Wallarians will return to the small screen this month.

The service provider for adults with different abilities has locked in a 30-minute slot on Channel 31 at 6pm on Tuesday 20 September.

It will host a live viewing for up to 70 clients, family members, and corporate partners at the Wallara Pop Up Shop at Dandenong Plaza.

It’s the fourth time Wallara has featured on television. The episodes shine a light on disability and the lives of their clients.

Nominations for the Indian Cultural Precinct taskforce are now open.

The Journal reported last month that Greater Dandenong Council was working with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship to establish the group to guide the project.

The council confirmed last week that nominations would open on Monday 5 September and close on Monday 26 September.

In a society scattered with new Australians, it seemed fitting for Casey students to debate a topic so close to home - refugees.

Students from five schools across the state took up the Model UN debating challenge on Friday 26 August at Hampton Park Secondary College.

Eighty students from Year 7 to 12 made up teams, as small as two people, to represent all the countries of the world.

The teams then debated the global issue of ‘Refugees: A Humanitarian Crisis’ from the stance of the country they represented.

Some students said they learnt more about politics than they had bargained for.

Hampton Park Secondary College, Year 10 student Allison MacCuaig said the debate was a great insight into politics, a subject her school did not offer.

“There was a lot of different perspectives that you must take on from different countries it was interesting to look at it from Syria’s point

of view,” Alison said.

The students discussed economics, population, infrastructure and political reasoning as to why certain countries couldn’t take on more refugees and why that wouldn’t be sustainable.

Students then debated other ways countries could provide help, such as financial aid.

Hampton Park Secondary College teacher, Anna Carrig, a former UN youth volunteer said the event developed more than just cleaner debating skills.

“It allowed students to learn and to develop an authentic and deep understanding of why in the current global climate a forum for collaboration between nations is so crucial,” Ms Carrig said.

“In a closing speech on the day the acting Secretary-General, the UNAA Victorian division’s Vice-President Ian Howie, spoke to the students about the significance of the purposes of the UN - to bring countries together to discuss and combat the most urgent global issues facing the world today.”

SPORT Break as good as a career boost Taking a break proved the most difficult but rewarding lesson Rosie Fadljevic ever learned.

The newest addition to the Dandenong Jayco Rangers WNBL roster - bringing her back to where it all began as a Dandenong junior - almost never returned as life-on-court took its toll.

At the end of the 2015 winter season, Fadljevic, 22, from Endeavour Hills had just finished up her Geelong Supercats SEABL duties, packed away her gear and... relaxed.

The relentless life of balancing summer and winter seasons, plus travelling around the country playing had taken a toll.

After leaving Townsville’s WNBL program that year - with her maiden WNBL championship victory in her back pocket - Fadljevic was ready for a break.

Then the phone rang.

On the other end of the line... legendary Canberra coach Carrie Graf.

“I was kind of in no-man’s land,” Fadljevic said.

“I finished off with Geelong in SEABL and I was convinced that I wasn’t going to play again to the point that I threw my shoes out as I thought ‘I don’t need these anymore’.

“I was all set - unpacked all my winter gear at home and said to mum that my cupboard had never been this full.

“But then three days into me being at home Graffy called me.

“I saw her phone call and thought ‘I don’t know if I want to answer this or not’ as I just wanted a change.”

And after six weeks in the WNBL system with Canberra, she was back to her relaxation.

“I came home and did nothing for five months - and it was fantastic,” Fadljevic said.

“I didn’t play, I only came and watched the Dandenong girls play after about a month.

“Didn’t play, didn’t touch a ball, but then I started shooting around after games and it all started to come back.

“That five months was probably the best thing I ever did.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of girls who have taken

“When she did it - she had a year off - everyone told her it was the worst thing she could do, but she came back and funnily enough she was in the Opals squad this year.

“She said ‘listen to yourself ’ and I did and I’m happy I did that.”

She returned to Geelong for another winter campaign... and is thrilled to return to her longtime home at Dandenong Basketball Stadium for the upcoming WNBL season.

“I do get to come home - I’m so excited,” Fadljevic said.

“Walking in here the first training session I had a weird feeling - it felt good to come back.

“Sara (Blicavs) and I played here when we graduated from the institute and she thought it would be a great idea - she loves to try and persuade me into things and, in this case, she has.

“Steph Cumming was the same - Steph and I lived together in Townsville so we are really close - and one thing led to another.”

For season 2015/16, that off-court joy she felt across last summer is something she wants to bring back to her game.

“Just to enjoy it, really. I think before I had that break that basketball had taken over my life a little

“I don’t know how long I’m going to play for but I don’t want my last years to be that I don’t enjoy it.

“Just want to do well with the team.

“They’ve come so close in the last few years and when I was in Townsville we actually knocked them out so, hopefully, we can knock Townsville out this year if that’s what happens.”

Rosie’s return to Dandenong begins with its WNBL season-opener away against UC Capitals on 8 October before hosting the first home game against Perth on Sunday 16 October.

The depth and breadth of the Dandenong Baseball Association (DBA) was on display in Pakenham recently for its junior grand final day - under-11s through to under-17s.

One of the association’s fastest-growing clubs the Pakenham Pumas - hosted the day at Toomuc Reserve, which was a roaring success but also highlighted the need for increased local and shire funding into the sport.

Currently the Pumas are operating out of a ‘clubroom’ not much bigger than a double car garage, and even then they have to share that with the neighbouring Pakenham Little Athletics Club.

Both clubs are desperately crying out for facility upgrades to cater for their member base, which in the Pumas’ case has grown rapidly now that they’ve got a wide range of teams across both winter and summer seasons.

A couple of weeks ago - on its two diamonds, plus an additional two makeshift diamonds - the Pumas hosted all four junior grand finals of the DBA, which extends far and wide throughout Melbourne’s east.

The event was a roaring success with hundreds gathering to cheer the under-11s, under-13s, under-15s and under-17s on.

That’s the power of the sport from a junior right through to a senior level.

Pumas volunteers were at Toomuc Reserve until late the night before the grand finals and back from 6am the next morning to prepare the area for the four grand finals.

The mateship and camaraderie on display at Pakenham for the DBA junior grand finals had to be seen to be believed.

The Keysborough Cougars basketball club has farewelled four of its champions who’ve pulled the pin on their stellar careers following the conclusion of their Big V Division 1 men’s season.

The Cougars finished their season with a 7-15 record from their 22 games, falling short of a playoff berth.

Steve Haddrell, John Constance, Adam Sliwinski and Aaron Stirton all came to the Cougars from other clubs but chose to play out their final Big V years at Keysborough.

“Admiration and determination are the first words that come to mind when it comes to these four guys,” said Keysborough Basketball president Gary Nichol.

“With the men’s team playing Big V finals each year from 2011-2014 and missing out on the chocolates each time, it would have been very easy for them to call it quits, in particular Hadders and Johnny after long-term injury and surgeries had them both on the sidelines, long term, during this period. But no, they all knew they had unfinished business.

“2015 looked the most promising year yet, and they all knew it - they trained liked men possessed ... running stairs for 30 minutes before training, hundreds of shots after training, I regularly sat around after sessions waiting to lock up while they did what I knew they had to do.

“All four played a vital part in winning the D2M Championship in 2015 and helped move the team up to the next level.

“The Keysborough ‘family’ culture that they all helped build brought them back in 2016 for one last year moving up to Division 1.”

Speed star puts in electric show Dundee Osprey confirmed his status as one of the country’s fastest sprinters with an electric performance on Thursday night, 1 September, at Speed Star at Sandown Park.

Dundee Osprey took on Burn One Down in the last of four match races.

Dundee Osprey gained control early and generated a three length break down the break straight.

Burn One Down, known for his phenomenal strength, loomed large turning for home but was unsuccessful.

The winning time of 29.266 was the fastest time of the four matches, enough to crown Dundee Osprey the Speed Star.

“I thought he’d lead by a couple of lengths. He got away by about three and I thought he had a big enough break to hold Burn One Down off.

“As strong as Burn One Down is to come from behind and get around a dog it was always going to be a big ask,” said trainer Geoff Scott-Smith.

“When he comes here to trial on a Saturday morning he goes about 29.25 - after Brockie set his time (29.292) I thought we were a chance to sneak under.

“It’s a big thrill, a great feather in his cap.”

Dundee Osprey trialled his way into the series with a 29.237 on the Sunday prior to his National Sprint task in Adelaide.

“Things have worked out like clockwork - with the week off before the National final I was able to trial him here and luckily qualify for the series.”

Scott-Smith was always confident of his charge’s ability though was uncertain if he’d one day be able to mix it with the best.

“Six months ago I knew he was a good dog and had a lot of ability, I knew he was going to eventually come up against all these good dogs but I wasn’t sure if he’d be able to handle it. Since then he’s proved that he can match and beat the best.”

The win further highlighted Dundee Osprey’s superb record at Sandown Park, his fifth from eight starts including a group 1 Harrison-Dawson win in May.

Along with $10,000 for winning his match and a bonus $15,000 for the fastest time, Dundee Osprey now gains automatic entry into November’s $50,000 winner-take-all Shootout.

“We’d have to have a crack at it.”

Despite being beaten in his match, Burn One Down registered the second fastest time earning connections $6000.

Earlier series favourite Zambora Brockie defeated young gun Dyna Boomer in 29.292.

In Speed Star match three the enigmatic Jesaulenko got the better of Shima Song in 29.480.

The opening match saw Allen Terminator defeat Polijuice Potion.

Andrea Dailly provided the other highlight of the night training a winning treble.

Dailly’s night got off to a flyer with Brandeen Plugger winning race two, got even better when Marley Bale saluted in race five, and was capped off by the win of Nessa Shim in the ninth race on the card.

Nessa Shim completed the 595-metre journey in 34.28 seconds to down Quasi Bale and the Jeff Britton trained Silky Sock.

St Johns Old Collegians will look to bring their first premiership cup since 2011 back to Thomas Carroll Reserve when they run out for Saturday’s VAFA Division 2 grand final.

The JOCs finished the home and away season at the top of the ladder, with a 15-1 record, and gave West Brunswick a 41-point touch up in the second semi-final a fortnight ago.

The JOCs are as well placed as they’ve been in the last five years to add a further pennant to that 28-point triumph over Glen Eira in 2011.

They were promoted to Division 1 in 2012, immediately relegated to Division 2 for the 2013 season where they finished fifth, before dropping to sixth in 2014.

The JOCs finished second last year but were bundled out of the finals series in straight-sets elimination.

Coach Ben McGee is proud of the way his side turned that disappointment around to make it to this year’s big dance.

wait for the grand final to come around,” McGee said.

“Our defensive effort in the third quarter of the second semi-final was as good as we’ve produced all year. Glenn Costas and Liam O’Connor are great leaders, but we’ve got another layer below them who really stood up when it counted on the weekend.”

McGee has some exciting talent at his disposal with Sudanese trio Guy Chuol, John Ayama and Emmanuel Jakwot at the top of the list “They’re genuine athletes and real torch bearers for Sudanese footballers around the region,” said McGee, who can sense a burning desire among his players.

“I think there are 16 players who haven’t played in a flag before so there’s some real hunger driving this group at the moment,” he said.

Six members of that 2011 premiership side will try to repeat history on Saturday, with skipper Glenn Costas, Adam Bourchier, Corey Ely, Kane Arnold, Keith Ash and Rohan Scott looking to repeat the triumph.
