Albury’s leading the way

By Monique Kuzeff NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian is feeling “very optimistic” about the future of Albury, saying southern NSW is “leading the nation” in terms of “economic growth and jobs and low unemployment figures”.

Ms Berejiklian visited Albury on Monday morning to meet with local MP Greg Aplin, Albury City councillors, business leaders and directors to discuss issues relating to local government, area development and the future outlook of the region.

She said five years ago before her State Government was elected, NSW was seen as the “economic basket case of the nation” but has now grown in to the “powerhouse of the nation”.

“If you look at every single economic indicator we are number one rather than the last and that is having a very positive impact on the regions,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The way in which Albury City Council approached it was extremely limited and didn’t look at grants and items that flowed across several electorates.

“In many ways we are ahead of the game in terms of asset replacement and I’m finding it very odd that council considered that negative.”

Asked about the distribution of funding to local government areas across NSW, Ms Berejiklian said that every part of the state would have an “equal opportunity” to obtain funding.

“We don’t believe in a onesize-fits-all approach to government,” she said.

“When there’s a project of merit that comes before you as a government you need to consider it on its merit.

“We put resources where we believe they’re needed most and we definitely will continue to ensure that southern NSW gets it fair share.”

She said one third of funding for state infrastructure would be directed to rural and regional NSW, with Albury getting its “fair share”.

“Since we’ve come into government, this area, Albury in particular, has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in State Government support and that will continue,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“As we unlock billions of dollars for infrastructure I want to assure the community that Albury will definitely continue to get its fair share.”

Mr Aplin disputed the recent issue of Albury not having received as much funding ($22.7 million) as other regional NSW cities such as Wagga Wagga ($385 million) and Tamworth ($351 million) as shown in new data, saying the figures were “incorrect”.

“The figures don’t take in to account a whole range of expenditure,” Mr Aplin told NewsWeekly.

You can’t dial up love

Some 18 per cent of young adult couples argue over the amount of time spent online, a study shows.

“Its extremely distracting and once people’s attention becomes more occupied by their phone, the chances of them having an affair increases because they start getting attention.”

According to a 2014 Pew Research survey as reported in the Australian Financial Review (AFR), 42 per cent of mobile phone-owning 18-to-29-yearolds in serious relationships say their partner has been distracted by a mobile device while they were together.

Partners kick off on campus

By Monique Kuzeff LOCAL footballers from Wodonga Senior Secondary College helped kick off a new partnership between La Trobe University and the AFL North East Border (AFLNEB) when they went up against university students in a friendly competition at the campus on Monday afternoon.

La Trobe University will host AFLNEB coaching and club programs through the partnership and will also sponsor the Tallangatta DFL U17s and the Oven and King FNL U18s competitions as they play for the La Trobe University Cups.

In return, the AFLNEB will increase awareness of local higher education opportunities for footballers and netballers in the region.

AFLNEB regions general manager John O’Donohue said the partnership had been a topic of interest for both organisations this year who share the objective of increasing participation in local higher education.

“It’s a great opportunity to have some promotion and create awareness of the new partnership leading into the finals,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“Through this we want to raise awareness of the opportunities that exist for students locally and in doing that encourage more kids to study locally.

“It’s about retention of players in the region so we have more kids staying and studying locally and it's better for our clubs because we lose a lot of kids to Melbourne for study purposes.”

La Trobe’s current and prospective students will be given the opportunity of work placement opportunities through its Work Integrated Learning program and AFLNEB and its networks.

Mr O’Donohue said the university offered many club development programs which targeted those involved with the clubs such as coaches and administrators.

“We want to make our club members aware of the facilities at La Trobe, whether its families or young people that might come through.

“It’s about introducing everyone to the campus and our local university supporting our local community and that what we are all about too, so there’s a lot of synergy between the two organisations.”

THE “holy grail” of relationship issues is made up of domestic power battles, financial battles, and more often than not the in-laws, according to Albury psychologist and psychiatrist Dr Brian Hickman.

But something else has crept its way in to the cup over the past decade - the smartphone - and Dr Hickman says “it’s only going to get a lot worse”.

Practically everyone will own a smartphone at some point in their life, and often you hear people saying it has become an “extension” of them or “an extra limb”.

You could almost say with the accessibility to Tinder, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook through the smartphone has compromised the roles of a boyfriend and girlfriend or a husband and wife.

Being attached to your phone can disrupt your attachment with your partner.

Dr Hickman said that technology disruption often contributes to dissatisfaction in relationships.

“Mobile phones are shocking bloody things when it comes to relationships,” Dr Hickman said.

“It’s a huge issue which has most definitely increased over the last 10 years and it’s because the internet became so popular quickly.

This is more than 25 per cent of all couples reporting such issue and 18 per cent of young adults argue over the amount of time spent online.

Furthermore, a study of “young married women” showed that 70 per cent reported that face-to-face conversations where stifled by “active texting” or “phone use” by their partner.

Dr Hickman said he often gets young people around 25 enquiring about ways to develop and maintain romantic relationships.

“I ask them what they’ve been doing for the past 20 years of their life!” he said.

“Young people don’t understand how mobile phones can contribute to reducing their ability to have a healthy relationship with healthy communication.

“It can reduce your ability to read feelings in other people, they don’t learn how to become charismatic or charming and instead go about it really clumsily.”

Dr Hickman’s advice was to “get back to the table” and live in “reality”.

“At 9pm put down your phone because the blue light will keep you awake.

“Secondly just get back to reality instead of staying stuck in cyber space because by remaining there it can directly contribute to depression and anxiety.”

Daffodils are the secret weapon

By Monique Kuzeff FRESHLY cut daffodils filled up buckets only 10 kilometres outside of Albury last week as local Cancer Council volunteers prepared to celebrate 30 years of Daffodil Day in Australia.

Vibrant yellow daffodils painted green paddocks right across the country just in time for the Cancer Council’s largest annual fundraising event, Daffodil Day on Friday.

Daffodil Day aims to awaken hope in those touched by cancer in some way or another and give people the opportunity to contribute funding towards Cancer Council Australia who is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Australia.

Since its inception in Australia, the fund-raiser has brought in over $133 million nationwide.

The proceeds raised each year are directed towards cancer research, advocacy, prevention programs and support services.

Breast cancer survivor Rae Gibbons, who has been a volunteer for Cancer Council NSW for four years, said each year she is “overwhelmed” by the contributions from the local community on Daffodil Day with her stall in Lavington Shopping Centre, having raked in $4000 last year.

“Cancer is so prominent ... everyone flocks for the fresh daffodils, teddy bears and pins,” Ms Gibbons said.

a symbol of hope. I think people really focus on that on Daffodil Day. “The funds raised for the Cancer Council go towards very valuable support services for people who are going through cancer.”

With one in two Australians predicted to be diagnosed with some form of cancer by 85 it is most certainly prominent disease in Australia.

Ms Gibbons said Daffodil Day can be quite a “personal thing” for many people in Australia who have been touched by cancer in some way, which is why the fundraiser has such a positive response.

“From personal experience, the treatments and other aspects of managing cancer have improved so much and that’s as a result of people donating,” she said.

“It’s a great reminder for those who may have lost someone from cancer and it’s also helping future generations.”

This year, Cancer Council stallholder volunteers raised funds through selling fresh daffodils and other daffodil merchandise including pins and pens.

Stalls were set up across Albury at Bunnings, Albury Base Hospital, Lavington Shopping Centre, Myer City Centre, West End Plaza, and Thurgoona Plaza.

While Daffodil Day proceeds are still being tallied, the Cancer Council hopes to reach its target of $6.7 million nationally.

Legacy counts the hours

OVER 1000 people flocked to Bonegilla’s Latchford Barracks on Friday to participate in the annual Legacy Eight Hour event that involved various endurance activities to help raise money for Legacy.

The event saw another successful year with over $15,000 raised, which will go towards caring for families of deceased and incapacitated veterans and widows.

Military personnel, Rotarians and community members participated in the event choosing to either walk, run or mountain bike ride as either an individual or in a team for the entire eight hours.

Warrant Officer Grade Two Brian Jones said the day ran “very smoothly” and he was pleased to see the involvement of businesses, groups and individuals in the endurance activities.

“We often get wrapped up in our day-to-day lives and spend so much time on technology and for a whole day people were off their phones and in-between laps they were talking to each other and developing that community connection,” he said.

“It's when people actually put their feet on the ground and commit themselves, their time or their money to something - that’s when

we can achieve.

“Often families and kids can get overlooked and it's Legacy that keeps them supported in the public eye.”

The Eight Hour event began in 2006 when two soldiers from the Albury Wodonga Training Centre decided to raise some money for a local family so they challenged themselves to 100-kilometre run together raising $8000 for Legacy.

Mr Jones said there were about 600 widows and families throughout the Albury and Wodonga regions who benefit from Legacy fund-raiser events each year.

“We still have many veterans from WWII, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea around in the area who have been through different wars and this money really helps them out,” Mr Jones said.

“For widows and families the contributions help them out as financial assistance or tutoring or day excursions for their kids because they may not be able to afford it without that extra income, so it helps a lot.”

Nationally, Legacy has assisted over 90,000 widows and 1900 children and dependents across Australia since its establishment.

Look to the stars

By Monique Kuzeff ALBURY High School (AHS) will be presenting its annual ‘Astra’ night on Thursday 8 September which will showcase the diverse achievements of its talented students to parents and the broader community.

Selected major works from all departments will be displayed at the event including musical performances, exhibits of art, furniture design, technology and textiles.

The name of the event ‘Astra’ comes from the school’s motto “Ad Astra Per Aspera” meaning “to the stars through difficult and challenging ways”.

This motto speaks of the school’s focus to guide and assist its students with the development of their individual skills and talents.

Through this event, AHS would like to showcase the

outstanding achievements of its students which they have produced through the school’s well-developed programs.

AHS music teacher Danny Cowan is pleased to give the school’s musically talented students the opportunity to perform in front of a crowd.

AHS Year 12 music students will perform the pieces they will execute in the following week for their HSC practical examination.

“Through this experience the students will get a positive reinforcement and public recognition of their achievements and of their work ethic,” Mr Cowan said.

“It’s the sort of thing that, hopefully, entices or encourages other students to do their best all the time.”

Green Army’s new recruits NINE young people from the Border region have joined the “Green Army” to kick off a local Slopes2Summit (S2S) Bushlinks biodiversity project in Yarra Glen.

Local participants from across the region including Holbrook, Albury-Wodonga, Thurgoona, Walla Walla and Uranquinty will be involved in the project, which was launched by Farrer MP Sussan Ley last week.

The Green Army will help the environment and local community through restoring and protecting habitat, weeding, planting, cleaning up creeks and rivers and restoring cultural heritage places.

Ms Ley said the “army” would redevelop wildlife tree cover through Woomargama-Morgan Ridge area and would address current habitat threats for squirrel gliders, woodland birds and other local wildlife.

“Over coming months we’ll see first-hand the real benefits and improvements that can be made to our local environment through activities undertaken by the Green Army,” Ms Ley said.

“Local participants for stage one of this S2S project come from towns across the region, including Holbrook and Albury-Wodonga.

“Not only will our local team generate environment benefits, they will also gain practical training and experience to help prepare for the workforce or further training and to improve career opportunities.”

The Green Army is a six-month Federal Government program for 17 to 24-year-olds to train and work in the environment, and is open to school leavers, gap year students, graduates and job-seekers.

The projects is managed by Holbrook Landcare Network on behalf of the Slopes2Summit and Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, in partnership with Murray Local Land Services.

Pottery will also be on display.

By Monique Kuzeff SILHOUETTED imagery and light wash will soon dance across the external facade of The Cube from a new Light Box Public Art Projection Project that will soon be introduced in Wodonga.

The project, which aims to increase visitation to the recently developed Junction Square and Cube Courtyard, will project a shifting canvas of imagery and colour, and graphic work of artists from across the region.

Indi MP Cathy McGowan congratulated Wodonga Council on Thursday on obtaining a further $18,125 in federal funding saying that the project would also “improve” safety through such ambient lighting.

The funding was provided through a federal grant under round two of the Stronger Communities Program.

Wodonga Council contributed $49,060 towards the project which cost a total of $71,235.

Ms McGowan also congratulated the Arts Wodonga, Gigs Gal-

lery, Arts Space Wodonga and the Albury Wodonga Artists Society for getting behind the project.

“The cultural economy is growing each year and is critical to the future of north east Victoria, employing people, providing entertainment and supporting our lifestyle,” Ms McGowan said.

“Arts, culture and heritage continue to boost tourism, and are viewed as amenities to improve our quality of life and attract and retain people in the area.”

Wodonga Council culture and tourism manager Simone Hogg said the project would come with a range of benefits.

“The main reason for it is to increase ambient lighting around the vicinity so that way it will foster safe visitation, support our local artists and provide a point of interest for visitors,” Ms Hogg said.

“It will activate the city landscape by creating visual and changing dynamics for visitors to enjoy.

“The imagery will change from time to time, utilising work by local artists in the region.”

A GROUP of young Border dancers from the Regional Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) were treated to a two and a half hour class with elite ballet dancers Radamaria Nazarenco and Arcadie Nazarenco from the Imperial Russian Ballet Company on Friday.

But that’s not all that they were treated to. The students got to perform with them on stage as well.

The professional dancers were part of a group of 40 other elite dancers who travelled from Moscow to Australia to perform the timeless production that is The Nutcracker.

They will travel to 21 locations to provide specialised classes to young students from major ballet schools in each area who will then join the elite dancers on stage in productions held right across the country from September to November.

About 30 young RAPA dancers will dance a number of parts in The Nutcracker including the opening Christmas party scene in the first act and will play a range of roles including mice, cavaliers and gunners.

“Of course when they go to the lounge with the sweets that’ll be in the third act with the Waltz of the flowers which is a scene everyone knows,” RAPA director Jennifer Podesta said.

Ms Podesta said she hoped the young dancers would “pick up a little bit more” of what they needed to learn for the performance acts they would be involved in.

“The children have started learning the pieces they’ll be performing in and so by having the elite dancers here today we make sure we are on the right track,” Ms Podesta said.

“While we’ve still got a little while to go before the performance it’s good to have this rehearsal to make sure we are doing everything correctly.

She said many of the children “aspire” to become professional dancers themselves so it was a great opportunity for them to work with dancers from a professional company.

“Usually they’ll perform alongside others students but for them to see what it’s like to work with a professional com-

pany is always very inspiring.

“It’s really good for them to see first hand what’s involved in that kind of careers as well.”

REMTRON Automation will be one of 45 exhibitors both national and international to showcase the newest and most innovative engineering products on the market at an annual technology expo, that will be staged at the Commercial Club Albury on Wednesday 31 August from 3pm to 7pm.

The Institute of Instrumentation Control and Automation Australia (IICA) is a not-for-profit organisation organising the expo.

The IICA expo is designed for those involved in the engineering field including designers, engineers, technicians and operators, purchasing and management.

The expo provides an opportunity for those people to also talk and network with manufacturers, suppliers and experts who have good knowledge of the products.

The last IICA expo held on the border was at Wodonga in 2013.

2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date?

There are so many, marriage, kids, travel, etc, of course but trekking Kokoda would have to be at the top.

It is something I think every Australian should do if time and funds permit. A moving experience indeed.

Would have to be an old school Aussie hamburger with the LOT, a real one from a fish and chip shop, not a trendy slider or the like and washed down with a beer.

There have been a few over the years but splitting my shorts at the gym while squatting was up there.

4. If you could witness any event, past, present or future, what would it be?

World peace - enough said really.

9. If you could live in a particular era, which would you choose?

Back to the ’70s, growing up was awesome then. No political correctness and common sense was common.

Not much of a TV fan but Rockwiz and Game of Thrones if I had to pick.

Elbows bend for hay runners

By Monique Kuzeff THE Bended Elbow Albury saw a full house upstairs in the beer garden on Sunday afternoon as a crowd flocked in to support a concert put on to raise coin for the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners.

With the weather putting on a sunny facade all afternoon, it made for another great social outing for friends, families and partners who got together to enjoy almost five hours of live local music.

A total of $1227 was raised through the event with tickets costing $20 per head and the help from six local artists who contributed their musical talent for the cause.

Musician and concert host Sami Cooke was excited to have been able to work alongside local artists including The Young, The Unique Horns, 8Ballz, Fistbump, SAMI, and The Ethanol Brothers.

“It was really a great show so I’m very happy,” she said.

“There were some brilliant raffle prizes to give away too, donated from people across Australia.”

Donated photographs, paintings, and hat vouchers by Akubra Hats were some of the items raffled off to bring in some extra money for the local cause.

Ms Cooke said the concert was a complete success, with the venue close to reaching full capacity.

“We had a full room upstairs ... with people dancing and having fun.”

All of the proceeds raised on the day went towards the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners to assist in trucking thousands of bales of hay across Australia to drought-affected areas.

By Amanda Garrett IF you are thinking about property investing to support your retirement, it would seem to me that the big question is “are you going to be a ‘hopeful purchaser or an educated investor’?”

The hopeful sort is all of us usually to begin with; maybe we purchased our home years ago, and think it is like that. But buying a home and buying an investment property are vastly different.

In truth, sometimes it is hard to find people to advise who actually know what they are talking about, who actually own an investment portfolio (more than one!) and who understand how it works and not just how to make a sale.

So the first and most important question when considering real estate as investment is “do I want to be a hopeful speculator or an educated investor?” Or do you want to just throw your money at someone else selling you a property and hope it turns out the way they say it will?

Go ahead - just make dad’s day ALTHOUGH the day dedicated to recognising the efforts of father’s throughout the world is allegedly not even 100 years old yet, the celebration still has an extensive history to it.

While it is believed that Father’s Day was first observed in Washington in 1910, some scholars say the celebration is much older than that, dating back 4000 years and traced in the ruins of Babylon.

The belief goes that a young child named Elmesu wrote a Father’s Day message on a clay card 40 centuries ago. The young boy wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life.

While there is no record of what actually happened to Elmesu and his father, the tradition of celebrating Father’s Day remained in many countries across the globe.

The other story goes that it was introduced by an American woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired by the Mother’s Day celebrations, and planned a day to honour fathers early in the 20th century.

Her mother died while giving birth when she was just 16, and Sonora received much affection from her father -William Jackson Smart, a Civil War Veteran, while growing up - and felt he was deserving of recognition of his affection for his children.

In this day and era in Australia, Father’s Day is openly celebrated on the first Sunday in September and just like Mother’s Day its purpose is to recognise the role of a father.

It’s that one day in the year in which fathers are particularly honoured by their children and goes a long way in strengthening father-

child relationship.

Traditionally, mothers were regarded as the sole nurturer of a child and fathers just consigned to a secondary status.

In terms of child development, fathers play a crucial role and are just as important as a mother.

Children depend on their father for their emotional, financial, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing.

For daughters, the father figure often becomes thought of as the “ideal man” and the first man they adore, while for sons, the father is an “idol” and the kind of man they aspire to become.

Children show their appreciation and gratitude for their father often through kind words and gifts. Many Australian’s may take their dad out to a place of interest including a cafe for breakfast, a restaurant for lunch or even a day out at the park.

Other ways Father’s Day can be celebrated include handmade cards, charity activities, holiday, and presents such as chocolates, gift vouchers, food baskets and equipment for hobbies.

Old-fashioned winter wheels away I BET we will all be glad to see the back of an old-fashioned winter with plenty of wet and cold weather and get back to some great riding weather and a very busy time in the Australian motorcycle scene.

Locally the taste of warmer sunny weather has seen many riders preparing their bikes and heading out to enjoy, and this is where I remind everyone to give their bike a basic health check before heading out.

Check the tyre pressures and tread depth and general condition of your tyres. Check the oil level, cables and hoses and have a look for oil leaks.

Make sure your drive chain and sprockets are in good condition and properly adjusted and your fuel is fresh

and most importantly your battery is in good condition.

By doing the basics, it should ensure you have a safe and enjoyable ride.

Spring also heralds a hive of activity in Australia with Henty field days happening in late September, followed in October with the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island and the Australian round of the speedway solo world

grand prix round run at Etihad stadium in Melbourne on the Saturday night.

November sees the Australian motorcycle expo return to the Melbourne showgrounds between 25 and 27 November.

Back in the shop we have been very busy gearing up for the exciting months ahead. All the new season MX clothing from Thor, Fox and Alpine Star is being unpacked ready for the

new season and it certainly looks good this year.

We also have our fun bike promotions starting for Christmas, with some super specials and great give-aways.

As I promised last month we were fortunate to avoid two of the wettest weeks of winter and escaped to Bali where we hired a small Yamaha scooter and ventured out onto the crazy pulsating chaos that is Bali.

One thing that amazed me is that in all that chaos there is courtesy and care and very little agro and road rage.

I found it liberating to be able to explore at our own pace, once you work out that the road rules really don’t apply. You just look out for each other and go with the flow and it all seems to work.

When the car coming up behind you honks his horn he is only letting you know he’s there, with no agro at all.

The people are friendly, the roads are good and the scenery fantastic - I would thoroughly recommend riding over there to any experienced motorcycle rider.

Pets’ peace WALWA Veterinary Practice is settled in the hills of the Upper Murray.

THE problem is this: why would a marauding killer shark choose Blake Lively over the world’s supply of whale meat?

And having made the decision that Blake is a tastier morsel - OK, hard to fault that logic - why would our chompy friend then pursue her in a truly psychopathic fashion?

But those quibbles aside, The Shallows does have the potential to become something of a B Grade monster movie classic.

Blake’s doing a little surfing at a remote Mexican beach when she blunders across the dead whale ... and along comes the chompster, who selects her surfboard as an entree.

Cue hours spent on a rock, watching the rising tide and avoiding our very bitey 3.5-metre friend.

Of course, many others are not so lucky so Blake spends a lot of time clinging to the rock like a limpet, with her dear friend Steven Seagull by her side.

A scene from The Shallows. wrung the bird’s neck and used it as a shark distraction but, to her credit, Blake sticks to her feathered friend like glue.

And so the battle with the pea-brained and very grumpy Noah waxes and wanes, but it’s pretty entertaining stuff, and well-shot.

It won’t trouble the Academy Awards much, but it’s about the best of the dross that’s floating around at the moment.

Warming it up with Adam MASTERCHEF favourite, cookbook author and TV host Adam Liaw will work his magic at the community wood-fired ovens in Albury on Sunday, 13 September, as part of the Write Around the Murray Festival.

Albury cooks will be among the first to get their hands on a copy of his new book Adam’s Asian Cookery School, because the festival has secured advanced copies that will be available for purchase and signing by Adam. Copies are already on sale at the festival bookstore in the LibraryMuseum.

Adam won the second series of TV’s MasterChef, in an episode that remains the most watched non-sporting event in Australian television history, and now hosts SBS’s Destination Flavour.

A qualified lawyer, Adam is UNICEF Australia’s National Ambassador for Nutrition. His previous cookbooks are Two Asian Kitchens, Asian After Work and Adam’s Big Pot. On Sunday at the wood-fired ovens in Albury, he will demonstrate three different dishes that combine his unique cooking style with the woodfired oven process.

AlburyCity’s Cultural Development Officer Narelle Vogel said the wood-fired ovens were a great community resource and she looked forward to seeing how Adam combined his spectacular Asian flavours with the outdoor ovens.

“Food is a great way to create a sense of community and the lovely thing about the wood-fired oven is that it’s outdoors and it’s informal,” Ms Vogel said.

“It will feel very up close and personal as Adam creates the dishes and everyone gets to try the food.”

Statewide median rental growth WHILE rents remained relatively stable across the state in the June quarter, family sized properties in a number of regional towns experienced solid rental returns.

New REIV data shows threebedroom homes recorded some of regional Victoria’s largest weekly rental increases with a state-wide median rent of $290 a week.

In the three months to June 30, Warragul, southeast of Melbourne, was one of the state’s strongest performers for this property type.

The median rent for three-bedroom homes there increased 3.6 per cent to $290 a week, up from $280 a week in the March quarter.

The June quarter also delivered good news for investors in the coastal town of Warrnambool in Victoria’s south-west. Three-bedroom homes in the town recorded a weekly median rent of $340 - an increase of about three per cent or $10 on the March quarter.

Other towns recording quarterly rental growth for similar sized homes included Bairnsdale in East Gippsland, up 2.7 per cent to a weekly median rent of $290 and

Torquay on the Great Ocean Road, up 2.3 per cent to $440 a week.

Three-bedroom homes in Hamilton and the Geelong suburb of Corio both recorded rental increases of two per cent, boosting the weekly median rent to $250 and $260 respectively.

Slight rental growth for threebedroom houses was also experienced in Lara, north east of Geelong, with the weekly median rent up about one per cent to $338.

Meanwhile, four-bedroom homes in Alfredton, on the outskirts of Ballarat, also recorded solid rental growth in the June quarter, up 2.7 per cent to a median of $375 a week.

Located west of Lake Wendouree, Alfredton is central to the city’s growth corridor and has a growing population with many new housing estates.

Rental growth was also recorded in Shepparton with the weekly median rent for two-bedroom units increasing 2.1 per cent over the quarter to $243.
