WARWICK’S Paul McGrath has been named as coach of the Australian Women’s Polocrosse Team following a successful performance at Australian Squad trials at Morgan Park at the weekend.

McGrath’s Australian team will play against South Africa in April 2017 back in Warwick.

His selection capped off a successful weekend for the Warwick club which was chosen by the Polocrosse Association of Australia (PAA) to host the Australian Squad Series in conjunction with their annual IOR Rose Bowl Club Carnival.

Two men’s and two women’s teams from the Australian Squad went head to head at Morgan Park as players vied for a place on the National team to play against South Africa in April 2017.

Paul, himself a former Australian player - and the Qld coach for the past four Nationals, said he was honoured to be given the role.

“It will be very good, I’m quite looking forward to it to be honest,” he said.

Playing since 1978, Paul has a strong family background in the sport with his father and brothers and now wife and daughters all playing. Wife Sally played in the first World Cup while daughters Jordan and Keeley are already in the junior and intermediate squad.

Paul said he was pleased with the team selected, and they were currently working out the logistics of lead-up events and training with

the squad from around the country including two Western Australians.

The 32 selected players, drawn from all states in Australia, played three games each in front of the Australian selectors with the National Team being announced at end of play on Sunday.

Both the Men’s and Women’s Green Teams triumphed over the Gold Teams in the “best of 3” competition, with two nights of play under lights at Morgan Park and the final on Sunday.

Champion Lady Player of the Australian Squad Series was Suzette Thomas and Champion Male Player was Lance Anderson.

Not forgetting the importance of a good horse in the game of polocrosse, Champion Australian Stock Horse was Trent Mortimer’s Kirkby Stud Delight.

The two teams to take on South Africa will be captained by Hayden Turnbull from New South Wales and Suzette Thomas from Western Australia, with three Queensland players, Lauren Sillitoe, Tom O’Neill and Trent Collins, chosen for the teams.

McGrath will coach the women while fellow Queenslander Justin Hafey will coach the Men’s Australian team. South African National Polocrosse coach Bruce McLarty was in attendance and kept a close eye on the competition his players would be up against next year.

Third sprints win for Amos Casey’s tips

DEAN Amos didn’t need to get out of second gear to win his third straight Historic Leyburn Sprints outright title in record time at the weekend.

The Lismore driver rocketed back from a 10-month competition layoff to cover Leyburn’s 1.0 kilometre round-the-houses street course in 42.5447 seconds, lowering his previous best mark by 0.4 seconds on his fifth of seven runs against the clock.

“The car felt fantastic all weekend, and I obviously didn’t put wheel wrong when it mattered,” Amos said.

“My car is suited to these Sprints events. It won the British Hillclimb Championship three times before my dad brought it to Australia. I have a Judd Formula 1 V8 engine. Around Leyburn I don’t need to get out of second gear - but that’s good for 170km/h!”

Amos was almost 1.4 seconds faster than his nearest rival, North Queensland’s Michael von Rappard, who drove a Formula 3-based Dallara and improved on his own times from 2015.

Sprints regular Keith Carling claimed the fastest Historics time of 50.5878 seconds in a 1980 Tiga SC84 sports car.

More than 200 historic, classic and performance cars, dating from a 1925 Austin, to an owner-built single-seater called a Fly, contested this year’s Sprints in fine, warm weather.

Apart from the time trials, the many highlights included regular Leyburn attendees and 1981 Bathurst 1000 co-winners Dick Johnson, 71, and John French, 85, driving a parade lap in a replica of their famous TruBlue XD Ford Falcon.

“The weather was great all weekend, and we had fantastic on-track competition across more than 200 cars of all types. Although we’re still doing the final audit of ticket sales, we believe Saturday’s crowd was at least as good as last year’s record,” Ms Chant said.

“We also had up to 150 entries in the Shannons Show ’n’ Shine and Vintage Caravan displays. The Historic Leyburn Sprints continues to attract some of the best cars from the historic motorsport scene while providing the Southern Downs region with one of its most enduring and popular tourism events.”

A date for the 2017 Sprints is expected to be announced later this year.

Man dies in house fire POLICE are investigating a fatal house fire which occurred in Warwick on Saturday night, and an appeal has been started to help the family.

Around 6.40pm the house on Wantley Street was engulfed in fire and totally destroyed.

In the burnt out house, police have located a body, which is yet to be identified, but is believed to be a male resident in his fifties.

Scenes of Crime officers are investigating the scene to establish the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au which is operative around the clock.

Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

Donations are being collected for the family. For those wishing to donate goods, and clothes, size 18 to 20, the drop off point is 104 Horsman Road.

In brief Drivers charged TWO men have been charged with drink driving as part of traffic enforcement operation Five Alive in the Stanthorpe area this week.

Officer in charge of Stanthorpe police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said a 77-year-old man was intercepted on Friday afternoon in Caves Road, Stanthorpe, and later recording .10 per cent on a breathalyzer test.

And a 48-year-old man from Brisbane was intercepted about 3.30am on Sunday on New England Highway, Stanthorpe, and recorded .088 per cent.

Drug probe POLICE continue to investigate the discovery of a large quantity of cannabis seeds at Thulimbah late last week.

The discovery was made after Stanthorpe police executed a search warrant on a premises at Schumann Lane.

Taxi driver assault A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with assault following an incident with a taxi driver on Friday night in Davadi Street, Stanthorpe.

Police will allege that at about 11pm Friday evening a taxi driver was assaulted by a male patron when he stopped to drop off a group of people in Davadi Street.

The man exited the taxi and then punched the driver through the window to the right side of the face. He was later arrested by police and charged with assault. No serious injuries were sustained by the driver.

Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland of Stanthorpe police said the two units were “unlawfully entered” on Friday about 4am. He said the front doors of both units were believed to have been left unlocked at the time.

“The young female occupant of one of the units was awoken by the offender turning on a light in the unit, the offender decamping soon after,” he said. “In both instances the offender stole a pair of Adidas shoes.”

Shopping centre workers dig in MAJOR excavation work has begun on the $40 million redevelopment and expansion of Warwick’s Rose City Shoppingworld.

Queensland-based property developer McConaghy Group has started the bulk excavation for the basement carpark.

McConaghy Group Managing Director Robert McConaghy said the redevelopment was progressing well with works now signalling the start of the major construction phase.

“The transformation of Rose City will enhance the Warwick CBD and bring an exciting new shopping experience to the people of Warwick and surrounds,” Mr McConaghy said.

“Formal marketing for new retail tenancies is underway and we’re very pleased with the interest and enquiry received to date.”

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie welcomed the work.

“This is a great opportunity for Warwick and the Southern Downs Region right now,” she said.

“This will increase opportunities for local business people and during construction will also develop more opportunities for employment.”

In all, the redevelopment will see 25,000 cubic metres of soil being excavated for the basement car park, 200 tonnes of structural steel being installed and 16,000 cubic metres of concrete being placed.

A new sewer and storm water system is being installed on Palmerin Street and Fitzroy Street to allow the basement carpark to be dug.

New submains for three 1.5Kva padmounted transformers are being installed this week which will power the shopping centre and surrounding infrastructure.

The new main mall entry on the corner of Palmerin and Fitzroy Streets has seen the Westpac building being partially dismantled to allow for the construction of a new building for Westpac adjoining the current location.

The first concrete pour for the new Westpac building has just been completed.

The expansion will include more than 160 additional car spaces with a new basement entry off Fitzroy Street, 20 additional specialty shops, an enhanced food court with seating provided for up to 300 people and a new parent room and amenities.

opment is expected in mid-to-late 2017 and the project is expected to employ up to 300 construction workers.

Coles Supermarket will bring a new market-style full line Coles supermarket to Rose City in place of the previous Bilo store.

Other features include a new travelator and a new lift with access to the expanded undercover parking, and a new landscaped arbour adjacent to Leslie Park.

Rose City Shoppingworld centre management has been relocated onto Palmerin Street.

Start-up skills for the future AN EXCITING opportunity has emerged for young entrepreneurs across the Southern Downs to pitch their ideas, gain invaluable business skills and lay the foundations for their future.

Southern Downs Regional Council has partnered with Toowoomba-based consulting company Strategenics, to deliver a workshop for young people in the region aged 15-24, to develop start-up skills to help ideas and innovations become alternative paths of employment.

Organised by Strategenics, and with support from the Stanthorpe and Warwick Chambers of Commerce, the INCubate Start-up Workshop will be held on Saturday 22 October from 1pm to 10pm.

The workshop will offer individuals the opportunity to pitch their product or business idea and then learn practical business skills and start-up principles such as how to develop a business model and market an idea.

Participants will work in groups to pitch selected ideas to a panel which will decide on the most promising idea.

The chosen group will then receive a business coaching session from Strategenics’ founder and managing director Chris Mills.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said that she hopes the workshop will be the start of a local entrepreneurial movement in the Southern Downs.

“Ask any young person what is lacking in our region and they will tell you it’s employment opportunities,” she said.

“By investing in young people to become more entrepreneurial and innovative we can build the workforce of the 21st century and ensure the next generation has the

potential to become job creators.

“This project will ensure young people in our region are set up to drive new innovations and business opportunities for themselves and for our community.

“If we can better prepare young people to succeed in a rapidly changing world, the productivity and prosperity of the Southern Downs region will be assured.”

The workshop will be funded through the State Government’s Advance Queensland Young Starters Fund which has been developed specifically to help young Queenslanders turn their ideas into business plans, along with a financial contribution from the council.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Youth Development Officer Hailey Cosh-Rickard said the council’s Community Development and Economic Development units had partnered to secure the State Government funding.

“With $7000 in funding from the Advance Queensland Young Starters Fund, the council only has to inject just over $3000 to make this initiative happen,” Ms Cosh-Rickard said.

“This is a small investment for what we hope will achieve big outcomes.”

The INCubate Start-up Workshop will offer spaces for 36 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 who reside in the Southern Downs region.

A CROWD of more than 400 people went through the doors of this year’s Seniors Week Expo at the Senior Citizens Hall in Warwick on Thursday.

The 10th Annual Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo was held at the hall, corner of Guy and Albert Streets between 10am-1pm on Thursday.

The event showcased more than 50 information stalls dedicated to seniors’ health and wellbeing. There was also a barbecue lunch from Warwick Lions Club and local entertainment from Heritage Highlanders and Saxy Lady.

The Senior Citizens club supplied tea and coffee for a gold coin donation. The event was a major fund-raiser for the group which needs $600 a week to keep the club operating.

Don't speak for us I AM writing in response to a letter from W. Long, Karara, published in Free Times on 18 August.

While the Southern Downs Steam Railway volunteers appreciate the writer’s support of our efforts, the criticism of our councillors is both unfair and not supported by fact. The writer of “Steamed up” is not a member of our association, and is not empowered to make statements on our behalf.

The Southern Downs Shire Council has provided support of SDSR in many ways. On four separate occasions the council has provided a grant to enable us to engage a live band for the open day we conduct during the Jumpers and Jazz Festival.

Mayor Tracy Dobie, and Cr Yve Stocks, both made visits to our rail precinct prior to the council elections, to gain an insight into our operations and its benefit to the community. Cr Stocks has also donated a number of useful items to SDSR. Some of the councillors have already travelled on our train as paying passengers.

SDSR recently requested, and were granted, the opportunity to address a full council meeting to explain the development of our heritage railway and our perception of its benefit to the community. The object being greater promotion of our activity, not a request for an injection of ratepayer funding.

The council gave us a very good hearing, and this resulted in a recent visit to the precinct by Councillors Yve Stocks, Sheryl Windle, and Rod Kelly, to gain further insight into the scope of our operations. This group arranged for their visit and verbal support to be reported in the local press.

SDRC’s Visitor Information Centres at Warwick and Stanthorpe, and their band of hardworking volunteers, do a great deal to promote the Steam Railway and our heritage rail trips.

SDSR is run entirely by volunteers, and our main funding is from ticket sales on our heritage rail trips. Over the years we have received some financial support from Commonwealth Govern-

ment Grants, Gambling Community Benefit Funding, and the Work for the Dole Program.

We also receive a great deal of support, both in kind and cash donation from community members and local businesses, and this is very much appreciated.

So thanks to W. Long for your positive comments about SDSR, and thanks to our volunteers, local businesses, the community, and Southern Downs Regional Council, for all the support.

Touched by drugs THERE are probably many people living in our community who at one stage or another have been touched by the devastating effects of drug use. Whether it is a son, daughter, brother, sister, partner, friend, aunty or uncle, drugs do not discriminate and the Liberal National Party (LNP) understands this.

Maybe you have been the victim of a crime committed by a drug user? Crystal methamphetamine (ice), use in regional and remote communities has increased alarmingly in recent years.

We need a targeted, comprehensive plan, which complements the National Ice Action Plan, to tackle this issue and take ice off our streets.

The LNP has a solid record of tackling drug use in Queensland, through law and order measures such as policing and stronger penalties for offenders, and addiction treatment services that work.

We can always do more and the LNP recently released its ‘Taking ICE off Our Streets’ initiative which we will take to the next state election. We are fully committed to ridding our community of the scourge of this drug which is killing our youth.

An LNP government will implement a comprehensive, five-point action plan to take ice off our streets. Our plan includes dobbing in a dealer, keeping bikie clubhouses closed, delivering drug addiction services, law enforcement co-operation with state and commonwealth agencies and increased prevention through community awareness programs targeting high-risk people.

Drug use is an issue everyone in our community should be concerned about, before it becomes too late.

COMMUNITIES across the Southern Downs region will now have more clarity about the levels of service that Southern Downs Regional Council will provide for the mowing of open spaces, with criteria approved at the council's most recent general meeting.

Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie said that over the last six months the council had completed a review of the open space areas that it maintained.

“The review highlighted that over the years there has been a gradual creep in the mowing that is done along footpaths and in parks right around the region, over and above what the generally agreed locations and levels were.

“Now, the council has a guideline that clearly defines the areas that will be mowed, based on four zonings in the Southern Downs Planning Scheme, and sets out the extent of the mowing that will be done.

“The new criteria establishes fair and equitable, value for money open space service levels that are consistent for communities across the Southern Downs,” Cr Dobie said.

Sporting win says mayor in the Open Space Service Level Manual Version 1.0, 2012.

“So, what this means, is that the McGlew Street sporting complex will have its sporting fields maintained by council to the levels established for a Level Two Park,” the mayor confirmed.

The standards for a Level Two Park are as follows: Grass cut within 10 days of it reaching 100mm, 80 per cent of the time; Irrigation fixed within 10 days, 80 per cent of the time.

The mayor said that Southern Downs Regional Council acknowledged the work of the different sporting groups involved in the activities associated with the Stanthorpe Sports Association. “However, it’s important to note that the Stanthorpe Sports Association is the only association in the region that receives this level of service from council, with other facilities being maintained by committed volunteers,” Cr Dobie said.

New bridges of our dreams

By Tania Phillips THE Tummaville Road Bridge in Leyburn and the Sandy Creek Road Bridge south-east of Leyburn have been completed just in time for this weekend’s Historic Leyburn Sprints, one of the biggest motoring events in Queensland.

Southern Downs Community, Towns and Villages portfolio councillor, Cr Sheryl Windle, said that the new bridges couldn’t have opened at a better time and looked great.

“I’m sure that the Leyburn residents and visitors will be very pleased with the end result of these bridges, and particularly happy that the bridges have been completed in time for the Sprints,” she said.

It is anticipated that 15,000 people will descend upon the normally quiet community of Leyburn this weekend, bringing with them heavy vehicles and caravans as well as an array of historic motor vehicles.

The bridge and roadworks were completed within the timeframe and within budget at an estimated cost of $1,071,000.

The Sandy Creek Road Bridge opened on 9 August, a month later than scheduled due to wet weather conditions and a release of water from Sunwater.

Previously a single lane timber bridge, the new concrete structure sits at 34 metres long and 8.6 metres wide, now catering for wider vehicles and heavier loads.

This project was also com-

pleted within budget at around $1,177,000.

Transport and Infrastructure portfolio councillor, Cr Marika McNichol praised the local community for their patience during the construction works.

“I’d like to thank the local residents and regular commuters for their co-operation over the last four months during the Sandy Creek Road closure period, which made working on the project easier for all those involved,” she said.

The replacement of the Sandy Creek Road and Tummaville Road bridges has been made possible through funding from the Queensland Government’s ‘Royalties for the Regions’ program.

Council was successful in securing $2.64 million from the State Government under the ‘Royalties for the Regions’ program, which made up 75 per cent of the $3.52 million budget to upgrade four old timber bridges (Mullins Road, Bellinghams Road, Sandy Creek Road and Tummaville Road). The balance 25 per cent was funded by council from the 2015-'16 budget.

“With the renewal of the lease, clarification has been provided to the association to remove any ambiguity around roles and responsibilities.

“Southern Downs Regional Council has confirmed its obligation to maintain the sporting fields in keeping with council’s Open Space Service Levels,” Cr Dobie said.

What’s On Seniors take centre stage for maturity THE Granite Belt Seniors Expo was held at the Stanthorpe Uniting Church Hall, 111 High Street, between 10am-1pm on Wednesday 17 August.

The event, part of Seniors Week celebrations across the Southern Downs, offered a range of information, along with entertainment from

Country Music Bushies, free morning tea and lunch and a live broadcast by TenFM community radio.

Warren from Tunstall Health Care also demonstrated all the latest in health aids and safety gadgets.

Warwick RSL Memorial Club is excited to announce that multi-platinum selling Australian artist, Shannon Noll, will bringing his “We Only Live Once” tour to WARWICK.

The cast. tory clock and their nerves to finish on time. Judges Zumbo and Koo risk life and limb - OK, maybe cavities and diabetes - to taste and critique all their creations.

The two dessert makers with the weakest creations must then compete in the Zumbo Test.

Known as the Patissier of Pain, Zumbo will unveil a fantastical and challenging never-beforeseen creation from underneath the Dessert Dome, which the bottom two contestants must replicate. Zumbo and Khoo will

score the dishes out of 10. The lowest scoring contestant will be eliminated. It’s a baptism of fire with someone sent home every episode.

Just to sweeten the deal the winner of the competition will not only take home $100,000 in prize money but they’ll also have one of their creations in Zumbo’s stores.

Did we need another cooking competition show? Probably not but it looks to be a lot of fun none-the-less.

The tour will see Shannon perform a mixture of old and new songs.

CHANNEL Seven has started serving up a sweet treat for those with a sweet tooth and an addiction to cooking shows.

It was only a matter of time before photogenic and wellknown patissier Adriano Zumbo was given his own show to head up. Adding to the sweetness is the British chef (of Little Paris Kitchen fame) Rachel Khoo just to sweeten the deal further.

So what’s it all about?

An original Channel Seven concept (I know, refreshing right?) and from the makers of My Kitchen Rules - Zumbo’s Just Desserts puts Australia’s “most passionate dessert makers to the test”.

So think Great British Bakeoff meets Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

Under the watchful eye of Zumbo and Khoo, 12 contestants will put their sweet making skills to the test until the ultimate dessert king or queen is crowned. Their journey begins at the candy-coloured Dessert Factory, where they must make some magic. In every episode, Zumbo will set a Sweet Sensations Task.

Cooking to Zumbo’s special brief and theme, they’ll have to create a dessert using their imagination. Top pastry chef Gigi Falanga is Zumbo’s assistant on the factory floor, helping the dessert makers keep to time after they power up their dessert stations.

Cheryl said the project, assisted by the Southern Downs Regional Council Community Grants Program, enabled the club to have 24 new bench seats installed by local supplier Shellys Industries, around the perimeter of the lawn green.

“It is very exciting to have had this work completed in

time for our 70th birthday in 2017,” Cheryl said.

Looking back over the initial membership register with 114 financial members in 1948 to the current 64 financial members, Cheryl agrees that while some of the names and faces have changed over the years, the sportsmanship and long-time friendships have endured.

The clubhouse is used on a regular basis for community events and gatherings, with approximately $10,000 raised each year to support local, state and national charities.

New award for the Downs THE Southern Downs is set to have a brand new Australia Day award.

The award, for an overall Southern Downs Citizen of the Year, is part of a raft of changes made to the Australia Day civic events and ceremonies at the Southern Downs Council General Meeting this week.

Arrangements for Australia Day civic events and the Australia Day Award ceremonies have been streamlined with the council adopting a new policy, according to Mayor Tracy Dobie. She said the new Australia Day and Awards Policy outlines the process for the administration of Australia Day civic events and associated awards ceremonies.

“The new policy offers clarification around the civic events and awards process and highlighted a new award category,” Cr Dobie said.

“The council acknowledges that there have been various arrangements

in place for Australia Day celebrations across the region, of which the award ceremonies are a significant and important component.

“The new policy confirms clearly that two Australia Day civic events will be held in the region; one in the north and one in the south, and the venues will be determined by the council on an annual basis.

“These civic events will incorporate the official Australia Day Award ceremonies, and there will be a new process for nomination and assessment.

“And particularly exciting, is the addition of a new award category, the ‘Southern Downs Citizen of the Year’.

“Councillors will determine the winner of this award from the list of regional winners for the year, and we’ll hold a special separate event to present this award,” she said.

The mayor acknowledged that many smaller communities across the

Southern Downs also hold their own Australia Day celebrations.

“It is wonderful that year after year so many groups and volunteers bring their own Australia Day celebrations alive in their communities.

“The council commends these efforts and encourages these communities to continue their own celebrations.

“And, while these community events aren’t deemed to be the official civic events that the council co-ordinates and funds, community groups will have opportunities to apply for funding for their own celebrations through the council’s community funding programs, which will open for applications in the not too distant future,” Cr Dobie said.

I’M back home after watching the wheels on the bus go round and around as the Wanderers crisscrossed South West Queensland. Great tour and one of the finest groups of young cricketers I have been involved with for many years.

The Olympics have wrapped up, and for some of us we can now return to normal sleep patterns. It was a games of mixed results and while the debate is going to rage for many weeks over $$$ spent for return of gold medals, for us mere mortals there have been many lessons learned.

Take the Modern Pentathlon for instance - who of us knew the event existed - and how many could have explained exactly how it works. Now we have a gold medallist - Chloe Esposito. - Casey FINALLY FINDING FORM I COULD hardly believe it finally after a season to forget in the tipping stakes I cracked it for a perfect round last weekend - shame I could not have found that form earlier in the season much like a few of the NRL teams.

The raffle that is the top four still remains up for grabs, however Melbourne look likely to claim the Minor Premiership and have not put a foot wrong in recent weeks in true Melbourne fashion. Unlike the Storm, the Sharks are swimming in circles. Since their record breaking run of wins came to an end, their form has been questionable. They will be in the top four just whereabouts remains to be seen. The Dogs have dropped the bone as Canberra continued to terrorise their opposition. The Broncos are playing their way back into final’s form as we have come to expect but have some injury and discipline concerns. The Cowboys also redeemed themselves in front of their home crowd and will be fighting hard to make that top four. At the bottom end of the table it is also a derby with four teams vying for spots seven and eight. Things should be clearer after Round 25 - perhaps.

Thursday night the Cowboys head to Belmore for an important game against the Doggies. There will be no royal welcome JT, but I think the NQlanders will have the last laugh and go home with the goodies and more importantly the two points.

Blockbuster game on Friday night as the Broncos take on the might of the Storm at AAMI Park. This is a game that could go either way and will have all the feel of finals football. Corey Oates is under an injury cloud and while my heart says Broncos, I fear there may be a Storm brewing.

The Raiders will be looking to extend their winning streak at Brookvale on Saturday and perhaps get themselves into second spot on the ladder. It won’t be easy. The Eagles are flying

The Titans host the Panthers in an intriguing clash with both teams looking to cement their place in the eight and finals football. I’m sticking with the Titans who will draw a big crowd for this important game, but there is sure to be plenty of turbulence for the Hayne Plane and passengers.

The Roosters travel to Shark Park on Saturday night and the Sharks will be looking to get their premiership push back on track. Big danger game here as the Roosters have rediscovered their mojo and I think another upset might be on the cards.

The Tigers cross the ditch on Sunday to play the Warriors with the season hopes of both sides on the line. Home ground advantage should do

the trick here if the Warriors turn up for this game.

The Rabbitohs have restored some club pride in the past couple of weeks, and will add another win on Sunday when they travel to Newcastle to play the Knights. Newcastle will finish with the wooden spoon this season, but have shown some pleasing signs late in the season however I can’t see a win here for them.

Monday night we wrap up with the Eels and Dragons at Pirtek Stadium. Semi is back for the Eels and Benji looks likely to be sacked by the Dragons. The Dragons another mob who will be glad to see the back end of season 2016. Oh the comings and goings - a win here to the Blue and Gold, I think.

HOT BACK NINE SETS UP WIN LAST Saturday Hayden Smith had a hot round on a cold day. With 82 off the stick, Smith re-

turned a nett 65 to win the stroke event in Stanthorpe. Smith played the front nine fairly, but a hot back nine of 38 set up the win. Runner-up was Matt Waterworth after both he and sponsor for the day, Ian Pickering, returned nett 70 when Pickering opted out of a countback.

The ladies event was won by Helen Jones with nett 74. Lyn Ludlow and Nikki Rossow both finished with nett 77. After the countback, Lyn Ludlow got the nod for the runner-up while Rossow settled for a ball in the run down however she held the ladies pin at 3/12 while Ludlow had the Best Approach at 17.

Mike McAuliffe claimed the pin at 3/12. The other pin at 17 once again went unclaimed. Propins went to Fred Wharton at 1/10, Matt Waterworth at 5/14 and Keith Jones at 9/18.

In the run down, a ball each to Ian Pickering (70), Len Leigh (71) and Ian Harvey (71).

GREAT WEATHER GREAT SHOOTING ON the Inglewood range on Sunday, it was great weather and great shooting.

The day kicked off with the muzzle loading competition which was won by John Draper who outscored regulars Tom Donald and Ray Dudgeon.

Following lunch in the clubhouse an Action Pistol competition finished off the day’s competition.

It was a day of second placings for Tom Donald when he was beaten in this event by Iain Bowen. Peter Jones finished in third spot.

This weekend is dedicated to pistols with events commencing at 12.30pm on Saturday the earlier starting time of 9.30am on Sunday.

No doubt there will be people getting in some lever action practice in readiness for the State Lever Action Championships the following weekend.

Local Sport WIN FOR WATTS SPORTERS’ members enjoyed a round of golf on Sunday morning in magnificent conditions and it was stalwart Bob Watts who claimed a win. Runner-up to Watts was John Walsh. Rundowns went to Angelo Maugeri and Jim McPherson. Brendon Barker had the Best Gross and also took the Pin Shot on the third and the Pro Pin. Heading off with a meat tray were Ray Thorn and runner-up John Walsh.

Tee off on Sunday is once again at the normal time of 8am - 8.30am and Sporters always make new and visiting players welcome.

PLAYERS FINDING FORM SEVERAL players were in great form last week at the association croquet games played last week in Stanthorpe. Andrea Denkewitz pegged out 26 to 10 against the team of Val Richardson and Effey Russell. Included in her score were two breaks of two.

Also in good form were Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick who played very well in a very close game Widderick scored 20 with two breaks of three. Pat pegged out with 26 to win the game.

Her game included three breaks of three.

The other game was also a closely fought affair with Val Shephard and Carol Verwey scoring a close win over Joy Newman and Grace Howard.

Final scores in this game were 26-21.

ROSE CITY BOXERS BOUDN FOR GOLDEN GLOVES MEMBERS of the Rose City Boxing Club will be on the road again on Thursday when they compete in the Qld Golden Gloves Titles which will be held at Acacia Ridge. The titles are held over four days and organisers anticipate in excess of 500 boxers from all states of Australia as well as New Zealand and other countries will compete .

Five boxers from the Rose City Club will contest the titles.

Jake Wyllie 60kg division and Jacko McMahon 75kg division are in the open class. Teresa Poole 60kg Division and Charlie Sweedman 70kg division will compete in the B class while Luke Gillies will debut for the club in the C class at 42kg division.

The group of boxers have enjoyed a great preparation for the titles. There has been some quality sparring over the last couple of weeks at Nerang Boxing Club, All Star Boxing Club, Strathpine, Pony Shaw Boxing, Toowoomba and the Beaudesert Boxing Club.

PERFECT DAY TO INTRODUCE A NEWCOMER CONDITIONS were perfect for golf croquet during last week’s games on Wednesday. It was a great day to welcome Peter Harrrington who joined the players to try the game. In the first session, Elaine Brown put Harrington through his paces with a coaching session while the remaining players enjoyed a game of doubles.

Dianne Wren and Bev Sullivan paired for a 13 - 11 win in a close game against Teresa Pyne and Shirley Page. There was a hoop in one from Bev Sullivan while the top-scorer was and Dianne Wren with eight hoops.

In the other game, Val Fancourt and John Castles had a 13-10 win over Marian Castles and Justin Liddy.

Following the break the group divided into teams of six to play triples and four playing doubles. Marian and John Castles, and Bev Sullivan defeated Val FAncourt, Teresa Pyne and Shirley Page. 11 - 10 In the doubles group, new player Peter Harrington, played well to score an excellent four hoops, however it was Justin Liddy who top scored with seven hoops. Liddy and playing partner Elaine Brown won with 13-9 against the newcomer and his partner Dianne Wren.

There were a couple of noticeable awards. Another that went the way of the Waller stable was the Sydney Strapper of the Year Award which was won by Waller Racing strapper Ali Iftikhar.

It was one of the stories of the evening. Formerly a licenced professional jockey in Pakistan Iftikhar drew high praise from Waller who rated his horse handling skills as exceptional.

“Ali does everything with a smile on his face and is a bit of a character,” Waller said.

Waller revealed that since coming to Australia, Iftikhar lost his wife in 2007 and has since lost his father and one of his sisters. He has four young children between nine and 13 who still live in Pakistan and are being raised by one of his sisters.

Unfortunately, he rarely gets the opportunity to travel home however he sends the majority of his wage home and also funds a school bus to ensure local children get to school each day.

Waller went on to say, “Ali is a key member of staff and we feel privileged to have him on our team.”

High praise from the best in the business and a reminder that behind the stable doors there are many amazing stories.

Recently retired AJC chief steward Ray Murrihy was perhaps the most surprised winner in the room when he was announced as the NSW Racing Writers’ Personality of the Year. He also shared in the NSWROA’s ‘Industry Recognition Award’ with former ATC members Colin Tuck.

Not often stewards are rewarded for doing their job, but Murrihy who hung up his binoculars and famous range of pork pie hats at the end of June after a career spanning 40 years is widely recognised for his no nonsense but fair approach to one of the most difficult jobs in Australian sport. Murrihy joked that there were probably a few in the room who at one time or another would not have rated him Personality of the Year.

Meanwhile, at the Queensland Thoroughbred Awards a darling of the Queensland turf Buffering picked up the Horse of the Year gong for an amazing fifth time.

One of Queensland’s favourite sons, former champion jockey now trainer Chris Munce was inducted into the Queensland Hall of Fame.

Munce who fell fowl of the NSW Racing Personality of the Year on a few occasions is one of only seven jockeys to claim Australian Racing’s Grand Slam; the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Golden Slipper and Caulfield Cup.

ROOSTERS CROWING THERE has been little between the Inglewood Roosters and the Tenterfield Tigers all season and last Saturday in the BRL major semi-final at Rugby League Park Tenterfield that trend continued.

The Tigers had narrowly pipped the Roosters to claim the Minor Premiership on for and against points but on Saturday it was the visitors who were doing all of the crowing as the home side had their colours lowered. The Tigers must now find their way to the grand-final the hard way while the Roosters will take full advantage of a week off to help counter those niggling injuries that plague all teams at this time of the year.

In what both sides described as a tough encounter, the home side had plenty of opportunities in the final stages of the game with the majority of possession but had difficulty cracking the Roosters solid defence.

The strength and commitment of the Roosters pack has been one of the highlights of the team’s performance this season after a couple of years out of the BRL competition.

A big contingent of Roosters fans travelled to Tenterfield for Saturday’s game and with the grand-final to be played at McIntyre Oval on Sunday 4 September, you can expect to find Inglewood painted in Red and Black for the event.

Tigers Marc Mc Grady and Jarrod McIntosh both played well in the beaten contingent. The Tigers will now regroup as they host the Stanthorpe Texas side in the preliminary final in Tenterfield on Saturday. The Stanthorpe Texas side bounced back from two heavy losses to defeat Killarney 50-20 ending the Cutters season. Their task this weekend will be a much tougher assignment as the Tigers have been superior in all of their clashes this season. However, in a sudden death game anything can happen.

WALLANGARRA FINDS A REASON TO CELEBRATE IT has been a tough year for Wallangarra supporters after their Men’s side pulled out of the BRL competition and the closure of the Meatworks has had a damaging effect on the whole town.

On Saturday, however, there was some joy as the Ramettes defeated Stanthorpe Texas in the semifinal of the BRL league Tag competition.

The 10-4 victory was sweet for players, coach and supporters, who turned out to cheer on their players.

COWBOYS GALLOP AWAY WITH MINOR PREMIERSHIP THE Warwick Cowboys wrapped up the TRL Minor Premiership with an emphatic 78-10 win over Goondiwindi in their final fixture match of the season on Saturday night at Fr Ranger Oval.

With their closest rivals Pittsworth going down to Souths in a bit of an upset in their final game, the Cowboys finished clear on 33 points at the top of the table. It is the club’s first minor premiership in 29 years.

In Saturday’s game, the Cowboy’s outclassed the Boars. Winger Dan Watson starred, scoring four tries and kicking 11 goals as the Cowboys bolted away with the game.

The overwhelming win in A Grade capped off a great day for the club after wins in the Reserve Grade and under-18s ensured the club back-toback club championships.

The Cowboys get this weekend off as Souths and Highfields go head to head in the Minor Semi at Clive Berghoffer Oval on Saturday night and Pittsworth and Gatton face off on Sunday in the Qualifying Final at the same venue.

The job is not yet done for the Cowboys who must be favourites to take out the TRL premiership and they will be preparing for their semi final clash on 4 September.

WINNERS AND SURPRISES WITH the close of the 2015-’16 season, NSW and Qld Racing have celebrated all that was great. On Saturday night NSW racing identities celebrated at the NSW Night of Champions awards. Many of the Awards were predictable and had punters wishing winners were as easy to find on the track.

James McDonald claimed his second George Moore Award for the Sydney Jockeys’ Premiership with 89.5 wins for the season.

Rory Hutchings took out the Theo Green Award for leading Sydney apprentice.

Chris Waller blitzed the field to win another Bart Cummings Medal and also collected the T.J. Smith Award as Sydney’s leading trainer after his record-breaking 169-win season. Waller continues to raise the bar in racing ranks. His champion mare Winks was a shoo-in in the Horse of the Year while other stable gallopers picked up awards.
