Ms Cash said the amendment to the Fair Work Act would not be retrospective, and that the draft legislation had been publicly released.

services workers to have clauses that override state laws, such as the CFA Act. Mr Turnbull said the current EBA, which will be discussed in the Supreme Court next month, would “demoralise” volunteers, and lead to fewer people joining the CFA. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said the Government had not been briefed on the Fair Work Act amendment, but that the change was unnecessary.

“The proposed enterprise agreement has a specific clause that protects the role of our volunteers, the vital role that our volunteers play in communities right around Victoria,” he said.

He said that Victorian Government officials had been briefed on the amendment on Monday by their federal counterparts, and that he would receive advice on any effect it may have.

“We’ll deal with federal legislation if and when it becomes legislation,” Mr Merlino said.

“I won’t deal in hypotheticals we’ll see what happens with this proposal.”

United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall said the announcement

was “all spin and no substance”.

“Turnbull and Cash’s actions are a disservice to volunteer and career firefighters alike,” Mr Marshall said.

“Career firefighters are putting their best foot forward and want a resolution and an enterprise deal.”

Federal Parliament will sit on Tuesday 30 August, and Ms Cash said the legislation would be introduced “as a matter of priority”.

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced changes to the Federal Fair Work Act in a Yarra Valley doorstop, responding to the EBA debate between the Victorian Government and the CFA. Mr Turnbull visited the Coldstream Fire Station with Employment Minister Michaelia Cash on Monday 22 August to announce that an amendment to the Fair Work Act would be introduced to parliament next week.

The amendment will add an “objectionable clause” to a list in the legislation, meaning any enterprise bargaining agreement clauses that “undermines or limits” firefighting or state emergency services’ abilities to manage volunteers would be unlawful.

“We will ensure that the federal legislation, which any agreement has to comply with, ensures, determines that your position cannot be undermined in the way that has been contemplated and proposed by the Andrews Government,” Mr Turnbull said.

A large group of firefighters from the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges attended the announcement, packing the meeting room of the fire station and cheering when the Prime Minister made the announcement.

Gruyere firefighter Don Bigham and Hillcrest CFA captain Fiona Burns were two representatives of the firefighters who addressed the crowd, along with Casey MP Tony Smith and Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. Mr Bigham, who started at the brigade at the age of 16, said the volunteers did not want to get involved in the EBA dispute.

“The EBA should be between an employee and the employer; their monies? We’re not interested in them.

That’s their business and their entitlement, and good luck to them ... we just don’t want to be interfered with,” he said.

Festive parade all lit up COLD weather wasn’t enough to keep away eager visitors from the Yarra Glen Festival of Light over the weekend, with many turning up to McKenzie Reserve with homemade lanterns for an evening of entertainment. The festival, now in its second year, saw performers and lanterns light up the reserve on Saturday 20 August.

The event followed a lanternmaking workshop last month, and a huge crowd at the 2015 event

which involved floating lanterns on the lake near the town’s IGA supermarket. This year’s theme of magical creatures was taken up by some visitors, many of whom carried different illuminated objects at the festival’s parade.

Ute driver behind bars

By Kath Gannaway A WESBURN man will spend a year in prison and do two years’ community work for his role in a 2014 incident in which two teenage girls were seriously injured.

James Brian Lennon was sentenced on Tuesday 16 August, in the County Court at Melbourne by Judge Hampel having pleaded guilty to two charges of Dangerous Driving Causing Injury and one charge of Reckless Conduct Endangering Person.

Lennon, now 22, was 19 and had had his probationary licence for less than nine months, when he drove a high-powered Landcruiser ute over rough terrain resulting in Ebony Dawson and Tarryn Rankin being thrown from the tray of a high-powered Landcruiser as it bumped and drifted around a bend.

The court heard in a plea hearing on Monday 9 August that Lennon had gone on a camping trip with friends for

the Labour Day long weekend to an isolated rural property on Woods Point Road at St Clair.

Around 7pm on Saturday 14 March, some of the group, in utes and on motor bike, decided to drive about 800 metres to a higher point on the property to get mobile phone reception.

As Lennon, who admitted to having been drinking for around two hours, drove from a four-wheel-drive track on to a dirt road, the vehicle started bouncing around, sending the girls sliding along the tray. A third person, Mark McLaren, had been able to hold on to the back rail.

The prosecution lawyer quoted witness statements telling of the desperate attempts by the girls to hold on to each other, describing how as Ebony began to slide, Tarryn had let go of her safety grip on McLaren in a vain attempt to stop her friend from falling off.

Judge Hampel said there were a number of factors to be taken into account in imposing a combination pris-

She said Lennon knew he was not permitted to drive the V8 turbocharged ute other than for work purposes, that he knew there the three people were on the back and that there were no side panels.

She said that Lennon’s estimated blood alcohol content at the time of the incident was closer to 0.82, than the 0.60 recorded three hours later.

“Witnesses estimated your speed at between 50 and 60km/h,” she said.

Recapping on the witness reports of the vehicle sliding and bumping, and of pot holes in the road, she said, “You were going too fast for the conditions.”

“It is not suggested you intended the victims to come to any harm; your driving involved creating a real risk that anyone on the tray would be killed or seriously injured and in the case of Miss Dawson and Miss Rankin, they were indeed seriously injured,” she said.

“It has been asserted you were unaware until you were told they had fallen off, but there is a considerable body of evidence that points to your awareness of people on back before you took off, while you were driving and before they fell.

“This is not a case where the dangerous driving arises merely from failure to check rear vision mirrors,” she said.

The families of both James Lennon and of Ebony Dawson were in the court for the plea and for the sentencing.

Miss Dawson was in an induced coma for a number of weeks and sustained an acquired brain injury that medical reports indicated she was likely to always require some supervision and support with even basic tasks.

Ebony’s mother and step-father, in victim impact statements, told of the heart-ache for them and for her three sisters, as a result not only of the physical changes but of personality changes in Ebony.

“Ebony was my friend and my daughter and at times my confidant,” she said. “I have lost all of that.”

She said in pleading guilty Lennon had accepted responsibility and spared others giving evidence in a trial, but said she remained concerned at what seemed to be a level of minimising his responsibility for what happened.

Addressing reports of incidents where Lennon had been ostracised by friends and the community, she said while that was difficult, it was not an extra punishment to be taken into account.

“It is a reflection of what’s seen to be a community response to driving in this manner,” she said.

She said Lennon had no previous criminal convictions and had good prospects of rehabilitation but that having regard to the nature of his driving, the number of victims and the seriousness of the injuries to Ebony in particular, a combination of imprisonment and community service, was appropriate.

Working in concert for the sake of our wildlife

By Kath Gannaway THE Little Yarra Ensemble’s Wild About Life concert in Healesville on 12 August was a three-way success.

The concert gave the ensemble players an opportunity to play to a live audience ahead of their tour of Hawaii next month, it raised awareness and funds for the Coalition to Save Wildlife, and it was another exceptional concert for music lovers in Healesville.

The Little Yarra Steiner School music ensemble has been working solidly on the Hawaii program and the concert was the first real opportunity to run the full program in a concert setting.

The program features folk, Latin, classical and world music, including a traditional Aboriginal piece featuring didgeridoo and will be released as a CD prior to the tour.

Peter Hannaford, manager of The Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association (JESWA) shop in Healesville, the organisation behind the newly formed Coalition to Save Wildlife, said they were delighted to join with Steiner on the project.

“It was good to work with young people and see

their enthusiasm and optimism, and their willingness to help wildlife and the environment,” Mr Hannaford said.

Introducing the coalition concept to the audience, Mr Hannaford said governments had shown that they would do little to save wildlife and their habitat.

“Environmental issues rarely feature in election campaigns,” he said, adding however that one million people did vote for The Greens.

“Imagine if those one million people united in a coalition how much could be achieved for wildlife and the environment,” he said.

He said membership cost $10 and all the money raised would go to projects whose aim was to save wildlife with all administration costs borne by JESWA. “If we can’t give up the price of two cups of coffee once a year then there can be no hope for wildlife,” he said.

We remember them all LAST Thursday, as a community and a nation, we commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War. The Battle of Long Tan was an iconic encounter.

It summed up the spirit of all who served in Vietnam and through it we reflect on the battles before and after it in the decade long conflict.

Of course, this August also marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Pozieres in WWI, one of the costliest in Australia’s history.

‘The Australian’ newspaper’s Editor at Large, Paul Kelly, summed up the battle and human cost in a piece about

the windmill at Pozieres marked a “ridge more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on Earth”.

This is why the half centenary of the Battle of Long Tan and the centenary of the Battle of Pozieres demand an intensity of national concentration and reflection that only both of these two anniversaries can summon.

Girls caught in porn ring

By Derek Schlennstedt GRAPHIC images of female students from Lilydale High School are reportedly being shared on an international pornographic website, where users can view and upload sexually explicit images.

Of the 70 Australian schools mentioned in the report, 16 were Victorian schools.

The site is believed to have targeted students from Lilydale High School, Ringwood Secondary College and Norwood Secondary College.

The website reportedly contains photos of the victims and details, such as their full name and home address, as well as giving users the option to find girls, depending on their school and location.

A spokesperson for the Victorian Department of Education confirmed they are providing support for those affected and are assisting police with their investigation.

“It is disgraceful to see Victorian students being targeted by this highly inappropriate website,” the spokesperson said.

“The online exploitation of young people is a very serious issue that can have serious ramifications for those involved.

“The department is assisting police with their inquiries.

“We are working with the schools affected to ensure support is available for any students or staff who may need it.”

So far, thousands of explicit images of nude schoolgirls have been reportedly uploaded to the pornographic swapmeet site.

Lilydale High, Norwood Secondary and Ringwood Secondary School, whose students were reportedly featured on the website, said in a joint statement they would be revisiting their cyber-safety programs and focusing on teaching students the importance of respectful relationships.

“We run a range of school programs designed to teach students about respectful relationships, cyber-safety and to help them respond to unacceptable online behaviour," the statement read.

“We will be revisiting these programs with students in coming weeks.”

The Lilydale, Norwood and Ringwood schools said they are concerned about the safety and well-being of their students and are offering support for students and families that have been involved.

“The safety and well-being of students is our top priority, and we have been working with staff to ensure support is available for any affected students and their families," the statement read.

All schools are assisting police with the ongoing investigation.

CFA still in limbo as fire season looms WITH the Victorian fire season just months away, CFA brigades in the Yarra Ranges face ongoing instability, with the contentious enterprise agreement again in limbo.

After the Country Fire Authority (CFA) board on Friday, 12 August, seemed to have finalised a pay deal through the EBA, their drawn-out efforts were halted, with the Supreme Court of Victoria deeming the agreement should be the subject of a trial.

In what is a temporary victory for Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV), the trial is scheduled to start on Thursday, 22 September, which will be just days before the fire season looms.

To put this in perspective for CFA brigades, on 30 September last year it was the beginning of a controlled burn racing out of control at Lancefield, as temperatures hit 30 degrees.

Meanwhile in the Yarra Ranges outbreaks began in early October, with a two-hectare fire in Yellingbo.

Meanwhile, the EBA dispute continues to plague the CFA, with the VFBV announcing its disappointment on the Friday, after it seemed the EBA would progress further.

“Today is a day of infamy that will burn into the memory of every CFA volunteer,” the VFBV told its members.

“It is the day that a CFA board decision, and those board members who voted for it, betrayed volunteers and ignored their responsibility and obligations to the public of Victoria.

“This evening, the CFA board, made up of a majority of the Andrews Government-UFU (United Firefighters Union) - ‘yes’ people, accepted the UFU’s EBA.” Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish, also hit out, labelling the deal a “stitchup”. “(Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews has stitched up the signing of the UFU’s checklist EBA by appointing his own hand-picked CFA board,” he said.

“This is yet another slap in the face to the 60,000 volunteers who are

being ignored.”

Ms McLeish also claimed the board’s approval of the EBA had been released before the board had even met to discuss the matter.

“The board met last Friday night, with the statement from the chair announcing that the CFA board had endorsed the EBA initially published, distributed and time-stamped at 10.36am - five hours before the board even met,” she said.

However, the VFBV was quick to reveal to its members the Supreme Court bid.

“Our injunction to suspend the processing of the UFU EBA, because it contains clauses contrary to the CFA Act affecting volunteers, will be considered by the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning,” the VFBV told members.

Ultimately, the VFBV was successful, at least temporarily, with the EBA vote being postponed until the conclusion of the trial, during which it is expected past and present CFA board members will be involved.

Meanwhile, the postponement earned the ire of the UFU, with UFU Secretary Peter Marshall offering a scathing response to the VFBV’s efforts.

“Victoria’s fire services are not a political plaything,” he said.

“Victorians rightly expect career and volunteer firefighters to get back to work, protecting them with the onset of another fire season.

“Instead, the VFBV continues trying to divide career and volunteer firefighters and undermine morale by spreading misinformation and launching politically motivated legal action.”

Also adding to the uncertainty around the agreement is the fact the Liberal Party made a federal pre-election commitment to block the enterprise agreement.

During a visit to Belgrave in June, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop used the opportunity to declare the party would not “stand idly by and allow a Labor Government to unionise a volunteer organisation of 60,000 people”.

I READ with interest Robyn Johnson’s tribute to (‘Mountain Views Mail’ founding editor) Mardie (Lambert) in the article ‘Newswoman’s passion for print’ (‘Mail’, 9 August).

But I have to disagree with her memory of how Mardie reported with compassion and care the “horrible accident” Robyn mentions.

Mardie’s headline of ‘5 local lives wasted’ taking up the majority of the front page was just trash journalism at its worst.

Six local lives were lost that day and the sixth family would have been grieving just as much as the other five.

And, as it was no secret about how it happened, they were probably grieving more.

Mardie lost all creditability on that issue.

Sticking the boots into a family at a time like that doesn’t deserve much forgiveness.

I agree with Robyn though about how good she was doing the softball or hello possums.

Unlike Robyn, who was elected to council, Mardie was self-appointed and that shouldn’t

have given her the right to use the pen as a sword.

What a helper TWO weeks ago, I took the opportunity to cut up some firewood from a fallen tree at the end of Ryans Road, near Chum Creek Road.

Being nearly 80 years old, I forgot to pick up my chainsaw when I was finished.

Once home, which is only one kilometre away, I realised my chainsaw was not with me.

I went straight back and, thankfully, someone had picked up my chainsaw to save it from being stolen.

Hopefully this Good Samaritan will read this letter.

PEOPLE make bad choices, and very often they, and others, suffer the consequences.

More than 400 people heard that message on Thursday 3 August, when the emergency services of theYarra Valley presented the fourth Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Woori Yallock.

The focus of the evening, held at Heritage Funeral Home, was on decisions and distractions.

The decision to attend the program, and to sign a pledge to adopt three good driving behaviours, are seen as key steps towards addressing the over-representation of young people injured or killed in road crashes.

Information was given by local police, ambulance, CFA and SES members and by guest speakers whose personal experiences illustrated the ripple effect on individuals and communities when someone is killed or injured in a car crash.

Daniel van der Hoek was in Year 12 and had had his licence for less than a month when he chose to drive with his best friend after they had been drinking. He collided with a truck in Wandin at 100km/h and sustained life-threatening, and lifechanging injuries.

Mr van der Hoek spoke of the effect on his family, his career, his sport and of the loss of a best mate.

“I can never take back what I put him through; he was my best friend all through high school and now we never speak,” he said.

Illustrating the danger of distraction, he invited everyone to take two seconds to turn to the person next to them and say ‘you look incredible today’.

But sharing the stories of three crashes where young people had died because of decisions they had made, or not made, he spoke as a parent.

He said Ebony Dunsworth was 16 when she died, thrown from a car driven by a drunk driver in 2011.

He rolled at an intersection in Nar Nar Goon and Ebony was crushed beneath the car.

“As a parent of a kid, the first think you want to do is drag them out of that cold earth, but there is nothing you can do, so they stay there,” he said, his voice faltering.

“Ebony was crushed under that car for about six hours before we could get her out,” he continued.

Paramedic David Hadj’s experience was equally emotional. He told a harrowing story of the night police came to his door to say his son had been in a car crash.

He had been drinking and was the driver. Two people were killed, two others severely injured and his son was injured.

Talking of the continuing nightmare of what followed, the court case, prison visits and the impact of that decision, he said he was not asking for sympathy, but urged everyone to think about the choices they make.

“If you know someone is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you all have a responsibility to stop them from driving,” he said.

“If you can’t, you have a responsibility to yourself and your family not to get into the car.”

Tours of Melba Estate

By Jesse Graham THE home of Coldstream’s Dame Nellie Melba will be opened up until the start of next month, with tours offering a once in a lifetime view of rooms never before opened to the public.

Coombe - The Melba Estate is running tours of Melba’s private home, Coombe Cottage, until 2 September, giving visitors the chance to see the private rooms of the famed opera singer.

Though the estate itself was opened to the public in 2014, with a restaurant, art gallery and cellar door, Coombe Cottage itself has remained off-limits to visitors.

From 6 July, limited places were made available for tours of the gallery, gardens, Melba’s music room, boudoir and bedroom.

Business Development and Melba Estate manager Daniel Johnson said the tours were originally meant to wrap up on 13 August, but more spaces were made available due to the tour’s popularity.

“We’ve had excellent feedback

from everyone who’s attended so far - we’ve got cards that we get back in, with people saying how much they enjoyed it ... which has been really lovely feedback,” he said.

The tours involve a co-ordinator telling the stories of Melba’s life and celebrity about 100 years ago, seeing the rooms as they were in the singer’s lifetime.

Mr Johnson said that Melba’s “valuable and interesting” private art collection would be on show, as well as letters from the King and Queen and her visitors’ book.

The music room at the estate once hosted celebrities and entertainers, including Charlie Chaplin.

“The rooms themselves are absolutely exquisite,” Mr Johnson said.

“Melba had a fantastic sense of taste and art and the furnishings certainly really show that.”

The tours cost $125 per person, and include the tour and a morning or afternoon tea, with a glass of wine, tea or coffee.

INTRIGUING artworks in many mediums have filled the halls of TarraWarra Museum of Art, with the venue opening its fifth Biennial exhibition, on Friday 19 August.

The TarraWarra Biennial 2016: Endless Circulation opened at 11am on Friday morning, with hundreds of visitors flowing into the gallery to see artworks that varied from paintings to installations, videos and photographs.

The gallery space has been fully utilised for the Biennial, with exhibition works not only adorning the walls of the gallery, but the floors, the storeroom (which need a torch to be seen) and even the cash register.

Visitors looked at the artworks, flanked by the artists themselves and took in the striking, at times emotional and powerful works, which address principles of edition, circulation, dispersion and continuity.

Founding director of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore Ute Meta Bauer officially opened the exhibition after a stirring Welcome to Country by Healesville’s Brooke Collins.

Ms Collins explained the Welcome to Country to visitors and said it was a modern version of “an ancient and timeless tradition”.

duce new work to a local audience, but also to introduce the local audience, the local works and the artistic production that’s happening right now to a wider framework,” she said.

“Art is an important voice and it’s crucial to understand its role in this orchestra called society - at times in harmony, and at times in dissention, art engaged with what is happening in our surroundings, both visible and invisible.

“To listen to these artists, to watch and reflect on what they focus on in their works provide us with a different perspective, one that cannot be attained from daily news or other media reports.”

After speeches from cocurators, TWMA director Victoria Lynn and Discipline art journal founding editor Helen Hughes, a performance by musicians and actors was held through the gallery.

Artists including Vernon Ah Kee, Robert Andrew, Janet Burchill and Jennifer McCamley, Sarah crowEST, Helen Johnson, Vincent Namatjira and Wukun Wanambi have their works featured in the Biennial, which will run until 6 November.

Entry is $7.50 for adults, $5 for seniors. Pensioners, students and children receive free entry.

Team is on the trail of art

By Jesse Graham FIFTEEN artists from the Yarra Ranges and surrounds will be gathering in Toolangi in November to create works of art, in a revival of the Toolangi Sculpture Trail after 20 years.

The Toolangi Sculpture Trail 2016 will see Victorian artists converge on the area around the Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre for a two-week residency from 5-20 November, where artworks will be created in the forest.

Project manager Sharon Plummer said the event was organised to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the International Sculpture Event, held in the same area in 1996.

At the ISE, nine artists from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region created sculptures using materials sourced mainly from the Toolangi State Forest.

Many of the original sculptures, of which few remain, were made to respond to environmental concerns and Ms Plummer said the same ethos was carrying on to the modern event.

“The idea is that every sculpture is responsive to the site, or to environmental issues that are pertinent to that artist,” she said.

Another aim of the trail, according to the event brochure, is to “challenge and stimulate” the artists to work in an environment and with materials that are different to traditional studio artists.

Artists Aaron Carter, Ali Griffin, Brigit Heller, Brooke Collins, Car-

mel Wallace, Christen Jo Stone, Forest Keegel, Gay Chatfield, Isadora Vaughan, Joanne Mott, Klara Kelvy, Marynes Avila, Mick Harding, Mike Nicholls and Scott Selkirk will be making pieces during the residency.

Site co-ordinator of both the 1996 and 2016 events Savaad Felich said a selection panel featuring himself, curator Maudie Palmer AO and Professor Rob Haysom chose the 15 artists.

Ms Plummer said the entire event would be open to the public, with events to be held through the fortnight.

“Throughout the two-week period, every day people can come and go on a guided tour to observe the artists at work and possibly have a chat,” she said.

Go ahead, make Dad’s day IN Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. On this day we celebrate the love and dedication of fathers, step-fathers, guardians, fathers-in-law, uncles and grandfathers and thank them for being our teacher, carer, friend and role model.

Father’s Day fast facts Can you say the word ‘father’ in another language? Father is ‘pere’ in French, ‘ojciec’ in Polish, ‘vader’ in Dutch, ‘vater’ in German and ‘padre’ in both Italian and Spanish.

There are over 4.6 million fathers in Australia.

The traditional flower of Father’s Day is a rose. Red roses are for living fathers and white roses are for fathers who have died.

Music at the heart of Healesville

By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE’S annual Music Festival will be returning in November, and organisers are putting the call out for residents to lend a hand with the show.

The Healesville Music Festival will be held from 11 to 13 November in streets and venues around Healesville, gathering more than 20 bands and performers for its sixth annual weekend of music.

The Healesville RSL, Terminus Hotel, Memo Hall and Healesville Racecourse will be some of the main venues at this year’s event.

Organising committee member Auriol Hannaford said musicians would also be performing in the streets on the Saturday afternoon, as with last year’s festival.

Ms Hannaford said the racecourse was a new addition to the event, and that weekend-long camping at the site would be available.

She said the racecourse would also give budding musicians the chance to bring along their instruments and play in groups.

“We’ll sit around here, and there’s eight of us, and we’ll sit around and learn a song from someone, perhaps even with the musicians that are booked at the festival,” Ms Hannaford said.

One of the highlights of last year’s festival was a bush dance held

at the Memo Hall on the Saturday evening, and Ms Hannaford said the show would “definitely” go ahead this year.

She said the weekend would be an opportunity for locals and visitors to explore the town and see music of all genres, including the USA’s Haywood Billy Goats - one of the headline acts.

“It’s a vibrant, colourful, really interesting place to come and listen to some music you might have heard before, or some familiar music, and find something new - and really immerse yourself in the heart of Healesville,” Ms Hannaford said.

“You can have a coffee, you can explore all there is in the outlying area and still come in and see some good music.

Ms Hannaford said that, with less than three months to go until the festival, the Yarra Valley Musicians Collective was looking for volunteers to come on board and help with preparing and running the festival.

She said interested volunteers can get in contact via the festival website, and that volunteers putting in four hours of work before or during the festival would receive a weekend pass.

A silly old sausage Sausage Party (MA15+) Starring: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig SAUSAGE Party has left me feeling conflicted, and not just because this vulgar film about talking food may be the best comedy of the year.

In a supermarket society of sentient food, sausage Frank (Seth Rogen) discovers the digestive fate that awaits them once purchased, and rallies the other foodstuffs to fight back against the humans.

The humour is hilariously, ridiculously crude, but like Deadpool, Sausage Party is

intelligently crude, full of silly yet cleverly-executed puns, sight gags and dirty metaphors.

But the laugh-a-minute gags are bolstered by quirky, sympathetic characters, vibrant visuals and some neat action.

The film is also a surprisingly lucid satire of organised religion, with the myth of the 'great beyond’ blinding the food to the reality of their situation.

Sausage Party is a sidesplitting and weirdly deep animated comedy, but damning allegations have recently sur-

faced about Nitrogen Studios, one of the animation companies behind the film.

Anonymous testimonies accuse Nitrogen of intimidating and exploiting its animators and forcing them to work unpaid overtime, and the film’s credits acknowledge just over half of the animators who worked on the film.

Of course, everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but if these allegations turn out to be true, it would be unethical to support Sausage Party, however fun it most certainly is.

They really lifted it up a notch in the second and kicked 7.2 to 4.3 and the game was all but over by half-time. Another 7.7 in the third to 1.2 gave them a lead of 88 points at three-quarter time. They took the foot off the pedal in the last but still came away with a commanding 97-point win. Twelve goal-kickers made it hard all day for Belgrave to set up an effective defence.

Monbulk outscored Wandin in the third, kicking 5.2 to 4.4 and reduced the margin to 14 points.

They were in with a chance in the last but Wandin held on and would be glad they got away with a win.

Healesville have struggled over the last five weeks, only getting wins over Emerald and Mount Evelyn and dropping games against Wandin, Olinda and Woori Yallock. Not the best form going into finals. Scores were all tied up after the first quarter. Woori Yallock piled on 6.9 to 1.4 in the second and the half-time margin of 35 points could have been much worse for Healesville.

Healesville really struggled to penetrate the back-line of Woori Yallock and only managed another 4 goals for the day while Woori Yallock kicked 7 to come away with a 56-point win.

Alexandra held a lead of 5 points at quarter time but Kinglake swung that around in the second, kicking 8.4 to 3.1 to take a lead of 27 points at halftime. Alexandra outscored Kinglake in the last half by kicking 7.7 to 6.6, but it was not enough to worry Kinglake in the end.

Yarra Glen found another level in the last and kicked 8.5 to 1.3 to come away with one of their best wins for the season and probably just at the right time to be hitting some form.

Successful runs for young sports

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS THE Yarra Ranges Athletics members were spread far and wide over the weekend.

Five athletes travelled to Canberra to compete in the Australian Cross Country Championships and there was a fantastic turnout of club athletes at the Club Cross Country Championships at Morrison Reserve.

It was a windy, bitterly cold day in Canberra for the Australian Cross Country Championships held on the purpose built Stromlo Park cross country course.

Teams from every state and territory in Australia plus a team from New Zealand produced big fields and some excellent races.

A deceptively tough course fully tested every athlete making the eventual winners very deserving.

Kiara Flavel was the best performed Yarra Ranges Athletics athlete with an excellent third place in the Under 11 Girls 3km race.

Maddie Laven was close behind in 8th place, leading their team to a third place and bronze medal. Sam Norton was in touch for most of his Under 14 Boys 3km eventually finish-

Bowlers ready to kick off season WARBURTON BOWLS THE Warburton Bowls Club is looking forward to the start of the 2016-17 Pennant Season, which is due to start in October.

The task, to be one of the first three runners over the line to win a medal, meant the heat was on right from the start.

With some runners away at nationals and other events, opportunities were there for the

taking.

Thanks went to all who helped out on the day to made it a huge success.

Next week is the cross country presentation day at Hedgend Maze.

An opportunity for the club and their families to get together for a fun day, recognise all the achievements over the cross country season, enjoy a fun relay, barbecue and all the fun and games available at Hedgend Maze.

That is because he is a 12-yearold ‘cadet’, learning about the game through the club’s growing junior program. His mentor is the ever-supportive Tony Bickley. Clearly, Tony’s tuition and support is getting results, as

this young man blitzed the field to score 38 magnificent points - a future pennant player in the making.

Parson only just won though, as the runner-up scored 37. That person was Tony Bickley; hence the ‘unique double’.

The balls went to 33. The NTPs were won by Shaun Nicholl (3rd), Allan Hubbard (5th), Neil Leckerby (9th), Dave Murch on the 12th; and to Alan Johnston on the challenging 15th.

Safety is back on track THE Victorian Government, rail operators, Victoria Police and transportfocused agencies are joining forces to encourage pedestrians, drivers, and train and tram passengers, to be alert and stay safe as Rail Safety Week 2016 activities get underway.

Rail Safety Week is an Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and TrackSafe Foundation initiative, which runs from Monday 15 to Sunday, 21 August, and serves as a reminder to the community and the need to be aware of the consequences of not paying attention or disobeying rules near levelcrossings and around trains and trams.

TrackSafe Foundaction Executive Director, Naomi Frauenfelder, said each year there were thousands of near-hits and trespass incidents on the network nationwide, as well as illegal

or risky behaviour at level crossings.

“By uniting with the rail industry, government, road safety education and police partners we’re able to deliver a strong message to the community to respect the safety measures put in place to ensure their lives and those of people around them, are kept out of harm’s way,” Ms Frauenfelder said.

Across Victoria, the State Government is continually improving safety on the rail network through a variety of programs and initiatives including the removal of level crossings in Melbourne (Level Crossing Removal Project), the upgrade of regional crossings (Safer Country Crossings Program) and pedestrian safety improvements along the metropolitan rail corridor.

Public Transport Minister, Jacinta Allan, urged all users of the network to

consider their own role in staying safe.

“Safety is our first priority. Being distracted, rushing or simply taking a shortcut across tracks can be deadly when trains are involved. It takes only a split second for tragedy to occur,” Minister Allan said.

“We’re getting on with removing Victoria’s most dangerous and congested level crossings and upgrading regional crossings to ensure people get home safely - but passengers, drivers and pedestrians all need to play their part and behave responsibly around the tracks.”

In Victoria, Rail Safety Week is being promoted by Metro Trains, V/Line, Yarra Trams, Victoria Police, Public Transport Victoria, VicTrack, VicRoads, the Level Crossing Removal Authority and the TAC with the slogan

‘It’s my responsibility’.

Participating Rail Safety Week organisations will be spreading the safety message through a variety of methods including face-to-face interactions with rail users, posters and signage on public transport, via social media and during a series of public activities.

These include visits by Metro’s ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ characters to Flinders Street, and Parliament Stations, and V/Line Rail Safety week barbecues at regional locations including Ballarat, Geelong, Seymour, Bendigo and Traralgon.

Police officers and Protective Services Officers from Victoria Police’s Transit Safety Division will be continuing their patrols on the rail network to encourage safe behaviour by passengers and road-users.

Public Transport Victoria Acting Chief Executive Officer, Jeroen Weimar, said despite the dangers, there continued to be accidents and nearmisses, with passengers and motor vehicles taking unnecessary risks on the rail network.

“Victoria has a complex rail network with metropolitan and regional trains, as well as the largest tram network system in the world. The constant interaction between cars, pedestrians, trains, trams and passengers means there is a critical need for people to pay attention, obey signals and put safety first,” Mr Weimar said.
