“The parents left momentarily and the offender has taken that opportunity to steal it,” Supt Gillard said.

“What started as theft of a motor car has moved into a new arena, which is child abduction.”

Supt Gillard said the offender must have known the girl was in the backseat.

A five-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after her alleged abductor drove on the wrong side of Melbourne Road to evade a pursuit, police said.

Police hunted for the alleged child abductor in Norlane on Thursday morning after a car was stolen from Wyndham Vale with the girl inside.

They arrested an 18-year-old man about 1.30pm in Norlane the same day following reports of someone loitering suspiciously and said he was assisting with their inquiries.

Operational Divisional Support Commander Superintendent Craig Gillard was in Norlane that morning as dog squads, helicopters and 50 police officers searched for a suspect.

RACV slams 40km/h city plan, wants crashes data

By Luke Voogt A 40km/h speed limit in central Geelong would be ineffective in improving safety, according to the RACV. City Hall’s plan to cut the limit from 50 was a “blunt method” of preventing crashes and had little justification, said RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones.

“It (council) needs more work to identify the road safety issues and actually find solutions to them,” Mr Jones told the Geelong Indi.

City Hall has cited 156 crashes with 52 “serious injuries” in the city over the past five years as justification for the cut but Mr Jones said the figures would be “expected” of any busy central business district.

“We’d like to see a breakdown of that data to show how many were actually speed related.

“I’m guessing that many of those crashes were at low speed.”

Mr Jones said the council should instead concentrate on redesigning streets to influence driver behaviour and separate pedestrians and traffic.

“For speed limits to be credible drivers have to understand the reason why they have to slow.”

Speed limits would only be useful in accidentprone areas or at certain times of the day, Mr Jones said.

“It shouldn’t apply to the whole CBD. Down on the waterfront would make more sense.”

“There are roads in central Geelong that have very little night activity. When drivers get a wide open road, closed shops and no traffic, that’s when they ... end up speeding.”

Mr Jones said the RACV had opposed other “blanket” speed limit reductions, such as on Bell Street in Melbourne’s inner-north.

A study of the crashes on the street prior to the reductions found that most were unrelated to speed, he said.

“Lowering the speed limit in Geelong will make no difference to the crashes if it’s similar to what we found.”

Mr Jones also questioned the City’s justification that the speed cut would cause minimal inconvenience because the city’s average daytime speed was already less than 40km/h.

“If that’s the case, how can there be any road safety benefits from reducing the speed limit?”

Mr Jones said.

City Hall wants public feedback on the proposal between 25 August and 22 September.

In Brief Busy thief A thief who stole a Ford Ranger hitched to a fishing boat and trailer at St Leonards might have used the vehicle the same day to steal another expensive vessel from Highton, according to police.

Witnesses saw the Ranger towing the sixmetre wakeboard boat east on Portarlington Road just hours after the St Leonards haul, police posted on Facebook.

Fuel gone Lorne has been left without a petrol supply after its only service station closed for at least three weeks for refurbishments, a Surf Coast councillor has warned.

Clive Goldsworthy said the closest fuel would be 19 kilometres away at Airey’s Inlet as the former BP facility in Lorne underwent refurbishment to return as a Shell station.

Tender rare A lack of interest in a tender to build a pedestrian bridge over railway tracks at the end of Lt Malop Street is actually a “positive sign”, according to City Hall.

The absence of firms willing to undertake the project showed that Geelong’s building industry was “booming” said City Hall’s Brett Luxford as the council prepared to readvertise the tender this week.

Margaret Lupton’s North Geelong garden has transformed before her eyes at the hands of TAFE students over the past two weeks.

“It’s fantastic to see the ideas taking shape every day in the garden,” she said.

Margaret’s son Daniel nominated her for Gordon Institute of TAFE’s backyard blitz after his father Grant died of a brain tumour.

“Since my father passed away last year the backyard has gone into decline,” said Daniel’s nomination for The Gordon Rescue.

“It was dad’s love looking after it and while he was in the middle of improving it a brain tumour hit.”

Prior to Mr Lupton’s diagnosis in 2013, he cared for Margaret for 14 months while she recovered from two major operations and chemotherapy for treat breast cancer.

It was possibly an intriguing title for a roleplay game or perhaps a saucy new verb.

Whatever it was, 43 residents of Geelong West might seek clarification after a City Hall media release this week suggested they had “whorequested�.

They did what now?

Well, the statement went on to explain that the residents’ apparent ‘whorequest’ was in relation to a petition for renaming Dog Leg Lane to Timms Lane, in honour of a local family.

But how exactly does one whorequest?

Or is it something involving the adoption of an online character, like AdventureQuest, although somewhat more racy?

Most likely it’s something a little more mundane, like a typo that removed the space between ‘who’ and ‘request’.

And just to explain the renaming petition, the City said the 43 residents wanted something “more acceptable� than Dog Leg Lane.

The City complied, settling on Timms Lane in honour of a family that was instrumental in Geelong’s early wool-export industry.

The family also had significant property holdings in Geelong West during the 1840s, the City said.

Fair enough, although the name Dog Leg Lane probably had its own heritage aspect as well.

And dogs have other bodily parts less appropriate as a street name than ‘leg’!

Meanwhile, anyone who thrives on the challenge of absorbing reams of academic minutiae in just three minutes - and doubtless there’s a lot of you - would have enjoyed an unusual Deakin University event this week.

The uni’s Three Minute Thesis challenged 10 PhD students to present their years of research into just 180 seconds at the Waurn Ponds campus on Thursday.

That’s quite a deadline, given the average doctoral thesis averages around 100,000 words!

And then there’s the subjects, with competitors prattling on at high speed about everything from ‘harnessing the potential of nanofibre’ to ‘creating transparency with corporate codes of ethics’.

The audience, if there was one, must have been enthralled.

All Double Take can say is that it must have been the longest 30 minutes since TV flop Celebrity Splash.

stopped the car on Plume Street after the airbags deployed and fled on foot.

$25,000 fine for neck, skull harm Geelong Magistrates’ Court has convicted and fined an Ocean Grove plastering company $25,000 over an incident that left a sub-contractor in a wheelchair with severe spinal injuries.

Precision Plastering pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to ensure a safe workplace.

The magistrate also ordered the company to pay $5000 in costs.

The court heard that Vand Builders engaged Precision Plastering to assist in the construction of two adjoining double-storey townhouses at Ocean Grove in 2015.

Two workers began unloading more than 40 sheets of plaster from a truck after it became bogged, a WorkSafe prosecutor told the court.

The workers passed the sheets up a steel scaffold platform about 2.1m above the ground and 1m from the side of the townhouse but without protective guard rails, the court heard.

A subcontractor working on the platform for Precision Plastering requested fall protection.

Vand Builders added a piece of frame to one side of the platform but left the other three sides without protection, the prosecutor said.

One of the sheets snapped and struck the subcontractor, pushing him through the gap between the platform and the townhouse.

He landed on his head, fracturing his skull and breaking his spine, the prosecutor said.

The man’s victim impact statement said he now spent most of his time in a wheelchair and continued to suffer a range of severe medical problems.

WorkSafe’s Melinda Collinson said Precision Plastering failed in its duty of care.

“The lack of regard for worker safety by both companies has tragically changed this man’s life forever,” Ms Collinson said.

The conviction follows the prosecution of another Ocean Grove based-business, Vand Builders, over the same incident.

A new Geelong online comedy has more in store for fans after its creators began filming six new episodes this week.

Writer-director Ben Chamley said Rostered On’s audience could expand soon with television networks showing interest.

“For me, Netflix would be the main goal,” he told the Geelong Indy.

Chamley filmed a pilot for the show in April hoping it would reach 10,000 views. But it smashed the target on its first night, reaching 170,000 views last week.

“I always suspected people would relate to it,” he said “But I had no idea we would get the following we have in such a short amount of time.”

Chamley based the show’s main character Shaun, played by Geelong’s Paul Moore, on his eight years’ experience in retail.

He remembered “coexisting 40 hours a week” with the usual retail stereotypes - womanisers, backstabbers and “the guy who’s not a manager but pretends to be”.

“I hated the hierarchy of it and the corporate headquarters mentality.

“They expect your job to be priority but you’re just there to grab your cheque and get out the door.”

Chamley left retail to work in film, hoping to inspire young local film-makers.

“I’m just hoping people see what we’ve done with a very low budget and a lot of hard work.

“You don’t have to go to Melbourne to be part of the film industry.”

Paul Moore, who also appears in Winners and Losers, said Chamley’s improvisation brought out the best in his actors.

Jo’s turn for new ambition Geelong’s Jo Pittwood was pregnant with her third child when she had her first ‘turn’.

More followed before she discovered they were trans-ischaemic attacks, or mini-strokes.

After George was born, an MRI scan revealed that Jo had Moyamoya.

The rare, progressive disease was blocking arteries at the base of her brain, putting her at high risk of stroke.

Days after surgery in 2012 she had a major stroke, leaving her with right-sided weakness and speech defects.

“Over the next few months I worked with my speech pathologist, occupational therapist and physiotherapist to overcome my deficits and get back to my normal daily activities,” Jo said.

But when she was unable to find a community support group for Moyamoya sufferers, Jo began one herself.

“I felt like I’ve been given a second chance at life and it made me more driven to help other people in a similar situation.

“I began a Moyamoya Australia Facebook group to help other sufferers with Moyamoya disease and their families. I wanted it to be a place where we can share stories and know we’re not alone in living with this disease.”

Wanting to further pursue her dream of caring for others, Jo also began studying a Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University.

Jo’s efforts have made her a Courage category finalist at the 2016 Stroke Awards.

Her nomination was an honour that would help Jo raise awareness of Moyamoya, she said.

Stroke Foundation chief Sharon McGowan praised Jo as an “inspiration to other Moyamoya sufferers”.

“Through establishing an online support group, she provides a compassionate and understanding outlet for Australians living with this disease,” Ms McGowan said.

“Together, with the support of people like Jo, we can work toward reducing the burden of stroke in Victoria.”

The five category winners of the 2016 Stroke Awards will be announced later this month.

Fatally injured Two elderly men have died in hospital within two days of each other after separate crashes at Belmont.

An 85-year-old from Belmont died on Sunday 13 days after his crash, while a man aged 87 passed away last Friday following an accident the previous Wednesday.

The first smash involved a Holden Calais with four people on board who were travelling east on Breakwater Road, police said.

The 27-year-old male driver from Thomson lost control before the vehicle spun onto the other side of the road and collided with a blue Hyundai.

The 85-year-old, the only occupant of the Hyundai, was taken to hospital but died on Sunday morning, police said.

The driver and two passengers of the Calais were uninjured but the third passenger was taken to hospital.

In the other fatality, the 87-year-old was involved in a two-car collision at Belmont on 10 August.

The vehicles collided on High Street near the corner of Watson Avenue about 6pm.

The 87-year-old had been driving, police said.

He was transported to hospital but was unable to overcome his life-threatening injuries.

The male driver of the other car escaped uninjured.

Police investigating both crashes urged any witnesses of either accident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The national road toll at midnight on Monday was 188, up 16 per cent on the same time in 2015, according to TAC figures.

The TAC's figures show drivers over 70 have the highest death rate, although the 30 dead in the age group so far this year is the same number as at this time in 2015.

Geelong brigade gets hot wheels Geelong West Fire Brigade will purchase a new command vehicle after receiving $42,400 from State Government.

Brigade Captain Shayne Volpel said the money would pay for a modified Ford Ranger, replacing another vehicle due for an upgrade.

The Ranger would help a strike team leader co-ordinate Geelong CFA’s efforts during a large fire, he said.

Mr Volpel said the grant would also free-up funds raised by the community.

“We’re certainly grateful for the money. By getting the grant we’ve got spare money to spend on the other equipment.”

Geelong West businesses and volunteers raise money for the brigade with a barbecue every second Saturday.

Mr Volpel thanked the Geelong West community for their support.

Other government grants recipients included: Mannerim CFA, $100,000 for a light tanker; Wallington CFA, $2,000 for an alarm system; Bellarine SES, $19,000 for a new utility transport vehicle; Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club, $59,736 for an all-terrain vehicle; Ocean Grove Coast Watch and Marine Rescue Squad, $22,019 for a tow vehicle; Torquay CFA, $40,000; Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club, $20,329.

Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said the grants would the emergency organisations keep local communities safe.

Cops hunt ‘armed man in black’ over shop robbery A man in black armed with a gun has robbed a milk bar at Grovedale, according to police. Police posted an image of the alleged robber on social media this week as part of an appeal for public assistance.

Police said the offender was wearing a mask, gloves and black clothing when he entered the milk bar on the corner of Church Street and Sandalwood Court, about 8.15pm on Tuesday.

“When the attendant went to the counter the offender produced a black pistol and demanded money,” police said.

The attendant then handed over “an amount of money” before the offender fled on foot north along Sandalwood Court.

Police said they wanted to “speak to” the person pictured in security camera images from the milk bar robbery.

“If you have any information regarding this armed robbery or if you are aware of the person who may have committed it you are requested to contact Detective Senior Constable at the Geelong police Criminal Investigation Unit or 5225 3261 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” police posted on Facebook.

The Grovedale robbery followed two “good arrests” earlier this month over a series of unrelated thefts across Geelong, police said.

A 27-year-old Corio man will front court over six commercial burglaries committed over the course of a week.

“This male was remanded and is facing in excess of 20 charges relating to burglaries, thefts and deceptions,” police said.

Police also caught two youths and an adult after an unrelated residential burglary at Rippleside.

One youth was charged and remanded, while the others were bailed, police said.

A further unrelated arrest led to a 16-year-old from Norlane being place on remand over a recent spate of car thefts.

Viet battle’s long shadow

By Luke Voogt Geelong Vietnam veterans marked the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan on Thursday, with 50 former servicemen joining their comrades at a Melbourne service.

The battle on 18 August 1966 was Australia’s most costly battle in the Vietnam War. Geelong and District Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia president Rieny Nieuwenhof was with the group Geelong veterans in Melbourne.

“For us it’s a recognition of our service and sacrifice,” he said.

“It’s a day when we solute those 521 Australians who lost their lives during the Vietnam conflict, the 60,000 who served and their families.”

Mr Nieuwenhof said Vietnam veterans receiving recognition for their service over the past few decades was a fitting honour.

For years, politicians, RSLs and the public abandoned returning veterans as “political scapegoats” of an unpopular war, he said.

“Over time we have come to realise those young men and women were taken advantage of.

“They were told they were defending their country - but it was a political decision rather than the physical threat of communism.”

Mr Nieuwenhof served in Vietnam in 1971 with 131 Divisional Locating Battery.

He travelled to isolated fire support bases, which the Viet Cong frequently attacked with mortar and rifle fire.

Mr Nieuwenhof still remembers seeing battles in the distance at “Horse Shoe”, 15km south of Nui Dat. “There were a lot of attacks at night,” he said.

“Very often you’d see the tracer bullets from helicopters or artillery exploding.”

While conditions were tough for him at times, Mr Nieuwenhof had great admiration for infantry soldiers, who would spend up to six weeks in hostile jungle.

“For them it was a horrendous experience they were under constant threat of attack,” he said.

“They slept in scrapes of the ground, sat in ambushes and they were constantly wet because of the conditions.”

long Vietnam War Memorial on 14 August.

Peter Nash, the only Geelong veteran directly involved in Long Tan, attended the Sunday service.

They also remembered Gunner Tommy Simpson who is buried in Malaysia and is the only Geelong soldier who died in the Vietnam War.

Borough reprieve

By Luke Voogt Borough of Queenscliffe has received a reprieve after State Government backed down on its threat to sack 13 Victorian councils.

The Andrews Government announced on Monday it would disqualify the councils on 1 September for failing to properly sign a new Code of Conduct.

But acting Local Government Minister Richard Wynne said on Tuesday the Government would allow the councils to serve until the next elections.

An audit found that the councils, including Queenscliffe. had failed to correctly update the code by 4 July.

“The councils have admitted themselves to gross incompetence in not meeting this simple requirement,” Mr Wynne said.

“Our ultimate consideration here is ensuring residents don’t have to pay for the administrative mistakes made by their local councils.”

Borough Mayor Helen Cameron said her council inadvertently made a “minor technical breach”.

Councillors agreed at a special meeting on 25 July to adopt the code but failed include a formal declaration with all their signatures.

Council acted quickly to fix the mistake once the council notified of the breach, Cr Cameron said.

“At the moment we are still waiting for guidance from the State Government.”

Opposition MP Simon Ramsay blamed the Government for failing to communicate its signatures requirement.

“Each councillor needed to sign the declaration as well as the code, so the request should have gone directly to them instead of the council officers.”

The “mistake” could have left residents without local representation and reflected badly on councillors “who work hard for their communities”, he said The Premier’s office said the Government notified councils of the code requirements multiple times since the end of 2015.

ALP takes credit for surge in jobs

Unique exhibition celebrates ability The “outsider art” of disabled artists will feature in an exhibition opening at Geelong’s Gordon Gallery next week, organisers have announced.

St Laurence Community Services said A New Direction - Art Unlimited 2016 would feature a “highly collectable selection” of works with themes ranging from pop culture to current affairs and personal stories.

“A New Direction confirms our commitment to facilitating and celebrating the talents and diversity of artists with a disability,” Art Unlimited curator Elida Luciarte said.

“A key component of our studio is to provide a fully inclusive experience for the artists in all aspects from producing the work to exhibiting and sales and to provide greater opportunities for these gifted artists to find success in mainstream galleries.

“This unique exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to the Gordon Gallery to engage with powerful, intuitive and non-conformist works of art that celebrate each artist’s individual

Geelong’s “jobs resurgence”delivered 20,000 new positions last financial year, according to the State Government.

Andrews government spending on Geelong was behind the surge, said Labor’s Geelong MP Christine Couzens.

“We’re fighting for Geelong’s future,” she said.

Elaine Carbines, the chief of local municipal alliance body G21, praised the government’s commitment to the Portarlington safe harbour development, Barwon Water’s office redevelopment and construction of a Worksafe headquarters in Geelong.

The government’s $1 million commitment to G21 Regional Oppurtunities for Work project to find jobs for disadvantaged youths was helping improve job prospects in Geelong, she said.

But Liberal MP Simon Ramsay said Labor was claiming credit for Coalition projects, such as the Barwon Water project.

“I think it’s a bit rich of the Labor government to crow about job opportunities - most of the employment trends have been a result of investment by the previous government and the Federal Government.”

Ports’ ferry weathers tough start

By Luke Voogt Port Phillip Ferries cancelled its new Portarlington service on Tuesday in a tough first week for commuter trials.

A combination of strong winds and construction works at Portarlington's harbour forced the company to cancel the service.

The conditions meant the ferry was unable to dock safely at Portarlington Jetty, said Port Phillip Ferries chief Murray Rance said.

“They've closed the entry a bit tighter than we anticipated. With winds 25 knots and above that would have been a bit hairy.”

Services returned on Wednesday.

Port Phillip Ferries also cancelled the service

on Friday and Saturday last week for similar reasons.

Commuter trials began last Thursday with “single-digit” patronage.

But Mr Rance said the trial began only a few days after it was first advertised.

“There wasn’t too many on it but we expected that because it was the first day.”

However, the ferry had been gathering momentum, Mr Rance said, with about 50 people using it on Monday.

“That was a lot more encouraging than we thought it would be.”

Mr Rance said numbers on the Sunday service also looked promising, with about 200 passengers on the day.

Port Phillip Ferries had taken steps to improve safety at night and was working closely with Parks Victoria, he said.

Mr Rance thanked ferry support groups on the Bellarine Peninsula for promoting the service.

“We know there are going to be some hurdles but we are very grateful for the support we're getting,” he said.

Port Phillip Ferries will continue discussions with the State Government in the next two weeks, Mr Rance said, in hope of reducing the ferry’s time by 15 minutes.

“Letting the electricity of the city go and reconnecting with the country can be a really difficult thing,” says Yorta Yorta-Murani woman Andrea James.

“There’s a message in that for everybody, not just Aboriginal women,” she told the Indy between rehearsals of her new play.

Winyanboga Yurringa recountd the true-life tales of six Aboriginal women who left the city to reconnect to the land and each other, James said.

“It’s very intimate - audiences are really privileged to come and join us for a day and a night.

“The reason I love working in theatre and not film, it’s a real-life experience - it’s so empowering and beautiful.”

James wrote the play based on interviews with Aboriginal friends.

“I had to interview these women who I admired and who sometimes even intimidated me.

“These women are fiercely protective of their family and their cultures but very open with their time and their hearts.”

One of the storylines is based on Bindi Cole, a celebrated Wathaurong artist and photographer whose video portraits also feature prominently in the production’s design.

James drew inspiration from the indigenous 1980s television mini-series Women of the Sun. She was commissioned to write an episode for stage that captured the experience of the contemporary Women of the Sun. But when the idea fell through James decided to develop the episode into a full-length play.

“I had this little play in my back pocket,” she said.

“There’s such a need to get our stories out there and have our faces on stage and on screen.”

The play made its Victorian debut at Geelong’s Deakin University Theatre on Wednesday night, with two further performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

While Federal Transport Minister Darren Chester on a recent visit noted a regional tourism linkage upside, with the Great Ocean Road’s turnover exceeding $1 billion annually, governance vagaries and inaction together with the Andrews government dropping the rail spur despite increased Point Cook Jetstar patronage highlights the stage that Avalon has yet to reach.

And that relative inertia is a pity given the regional real jobs that would flow from inbound tourism and fresh food hub exports to Asian markets, should appropriate legislative accreditation and one-off infrastructure investment replace governance filibustering and small beer concessions.

Heritage of grabbing money If it is the case that alterations to a small weatherboard house can field a fine of $30,000 (Geelong Indy, 12 August), should council then not be fined a much greater amount for removal of Geelong’s roundabout at the intersection of Mercer and Malop streets, given it also had heritage values and appeared on the town’s postcards for decades?

The “heritage overlay” on the small aforementioned property looked suspiciously like a council money grab to me.

I agree with Alan Barron (Letters, 12 August) that we should alleviate poverty but cannot disagree more on how.

What is “obscene” is not the money spent on alternative energy but rather the profits of fossil fuel companies at the expense of the poor and indeed all of us.

Let me explain.

Those with the most to lose from climate change are the poor when hit by increasingly extreme weather events that destroy what little they have.

In part, the conflicts in the Middle East, home to large numbers of poor people, were triggered by one of the worst droughts in history, which was exacerbated by climate change and caused wheat prices to spike.

This caused wars as people resisted the regimes oppressing them.

Coal-burning power stations are centralised and the companies running them can charge exorbitant electricity prices.

Decentralising power generation with alternative energy begins to give back some power to consumers, keeping prices down.

Finally, in Australia fossil fuel companies receive $500 million dollars annually in diesel subsidies.

This is our taxes being handed over to companies that don’t need the money.

To protect their interests, fossil fuel companies have been spending huge sums of money to pull the wool over our eyes.

They have pressured and bribed governments.

They have muddied the waters in the climate change debate.

They want to keep burning coal for as long as they can and have hoodwinked many of us to do so.

This is the obscenity.

Creative hub for local art A group of Geelong artists will get “a little shop of their own” thanks to a concept by Armstrong Creek’s Laura Van Noordenburg.

Laura’s new shop leases individual spaces for local artists to display their wares.

“I’m so passionate about locally made products and business,” she said.

“I just want to get them out there.”

Laura has barely slept between setting up the store and raising her two children, including an eight-month-old boy.

“It’s a bit nerve-wracking but it’s very exciting seeing all the products in here,” she said on Thursday.

The ‘mumpreneur’ conceived the shop two years ago when she met fellow artists at the Little Creatures market.

At the time she was making dream catchers and pottery for her business, North of the Hill.

She started posting local artists’ products on Instagram and by December 2015 she had created an online hub which grew to

more than 110 members.

“People were loving it so I decided I might as well make something out of it,” she said.

Following its success she leased a space in an existing Newtown store to set up a “pop up” shop about six months ago.

Just recently Laura acquired a stop in Geelong CBD and said on Thursday it was about half full.

“I want everyone to feel like the space they’re leasing is their own little shop,” she said.

She will hold an invite only opening night on Friday 19 August and will open the store the next day.

Emma Rayson was in the store on Thursday arranging her space. She and her sister make prints, candles and home decor.

“It’s amazing for Geelong that we can have a shop for so many different creative people from the community,” she said.

“You can feel really good about supporting locals.”

Phil’s still got the blues

By Luke Voogt He might be an Australian blues legend, but Phil Manning still loves performing at a “quirky, little venue”.

“It’s very nice doing the intimate shows,” he said.

“There’s something special about doing a show when the audience is within a few feet. You can really communicate with them and you get a really good rapport.”

Still making music, the 68-year-old said he would have a couple of new songs to perform at Ocean Grove tonight.

It’s been five years since his last album, but Manning has wound back his live performing to give himself time to write, with a new album on the way.

“As you get older you tend to change your priorities a bit. My writing style has changed a lot over the years,” he said.

It’s almost impossible to talk about blues in Australia without mentioning Manning.

A founding member of blues group Chain, he has long been regarded as one of Australia’s greatest blues guitarists.

Chain are the only blues band to have an Australian number one with their hit Black’n’Blue. They also had a number two with ’Judgment’ and their album ’Toward The Blues’ went double gold in1971.

Chain are also the only band to have blues music awards named after them - the Australian Blues Music “Chain“ Awards, at the Australian Blues Music Festival in Goulburn each February.

Manning is also a renowned solo performer, and has continued to headline acts and play at festivals with Australian blues stalwarts.

He will appear at The Piping Hot Chicken Shop with support from Aussie blues duo Dog Gone South. Featuring Dave Dorman on guitar and vocals, and Eddie Boyle on harmonica, the busy duo clocks up around 120 gigs annually.

The Great Moscow Circus comes to Geelong next Thursday for two weeks of high-energy, death defying stunts.

This year the circus celebrates its 50th year in Australia with a line-up of new Russian and international performers.

Its three-year anniversary tour opened in Queensland in April and will visit more than 80 towns and cities in Australia.

The circus has a cast of 45 performers and 14 international acts in a production which will impress all ages, promoters said.

In 1965, Eric Edgley brought The Great Moscow Circus to Australia and since then more than eight million Australians have seen the spectacle.

His son, Michael Edgley has carried on the family tradition, and he described this tour’s lineup as the best yet.

He said the circus had “pulled out all stops” to wow families Australia-wide.

“The Moscow Circus has brought together the finest acts from around the world that have never been seen before under the big top in Australia.”

The circus will feature the ‘Globe of Death’, with six motorbike riders in a metal sphere - a never-seen-before feat in Australia, promoters said. Crazy clowns, trapeze artists and acrobats will also hit the ring during the two-hour show.

The circus will run for more than 20 shows at the Geelong Showgrounds from 25 August to 11 September.

The Bellarine Peninsula Strategic Services Plan will consider the health status of the Bellarine population, their current and projected health service use and make a series of recommendations about the future delivery of health services in the local community.

This newsletter provides a summary of the common issues and themes raised at community meetings held in Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Drysdale, Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, between 20 July and 27 July 2016. Close to 100 local residents attended the meetings and participated in lively discussions. The issues, themes and information will contribute to the development of the service plan.

The following service gaps were raised by members of the community in the meetings: • Early intervention for families with children with disabilities • Aged care services including home-based and residential services for people with dementia • Support for homeless people • Support for people with end-stage kidney disease who need renal dialysis • Support for people with cancer who are travelling to Geelong for treatment • Mental health services for young people • Palliative care and support for families and carers • Access to allied health services, particularly occupational therapy and podiatry, and dental servcies • Access to information about the range of services available • Accessible transport options 1224576-RC16-16

The following services were identiied by members of the community as working well: • Access to general practitioners in most locations. Use websites and existing email trees to back up the information with more detail and to provide links to services

SPORT Scrappy Cats set for fight Geelong will fight to stay in the top four this Sunday after breaking through with a lucky escape against Richmond.

The Cats salvaged a win against the Tigers on Sunday with a blistering last quarter after an abysmally inaccurate performance up until the last break.

They will want to avoid a similar scare against Brisbane which, despite sitting second last on the ladder, upset Carlton last weekend.

A win would see the Cats at least keep their place on the ladder, with the Bulldogs, Giants and the Eagles all battling for a top four spot.

A big win would be even better for the cats who need a percentage boost to secure a home final.

Big forward Tom Hawkins will look to add to the scoreboard and improve his form ahead of the finals.

Hawkins has kicked 44 goals this year but hasn’t dominated many games.

However his record against the Lions will bolster the Cats’ hopes for Sunday’s clash at the Gabba.

Hawkins averages more goals (3.1) and has kicked more (37) against Brisbane than any other team.

He booted a career-high seven goals in a win over the Lions in 2014 and slotted six at the Gabba in 2012.

At Simonds Stadium on Monday Hawkins admitted his form hasn’t been great.

“I’m probably not having he influence I’d like but I’m certainly trying to stay involved in the game,” he said.

Cats coach Chris Scott continued to back the key forward on Fox Footy on Monday night.

“We’d like Tom to be playing better but we’re really confident he’s got that footy in him,” Scott said.

Scott said Hawkins hadn’t got “to enough contests in good positions” and had been lacking the “movement to create space” before other players kicked to him.

“As a coaching group we don’t think we’re kicking it to him enough either,” he added.

Warriors in contention after four-game winning streak

The charge towards the NPL2 premiership remains tightly contested after the top three teams all won their respective matches in round 25.

Melbourne City and Moreland Zebras have all but spurned their chances of taking the title after a draw and a loss respectively, leaving St Albans, North Geelong and Whittlesea to battle it out with three rounds to go.

North Geelong did itself no harm by notching up it’s fourth consecutive win with a 2-0 result away to Box Hill and now setting their focus on Moreland City whose roller coaster year has seen it swing in and out of top two contention all year.

Moreland’s 1-0 loss on Saturday is the second time in four weeks they have backed up with a loss after taking a major scalp, previously taking down Whittlesea, which started their poor run of form, then in the East taking the wind out of Dandenong City’s sails.

The Warriors need to be wary as that trend has replicated for Moreland all year and - with striker Apai Ukuno having notched 17 goals - the imminent threat of an upset is lurking.

The Warriors got off to a cumbersome start last week against Box Hill and although never really threatened they had wasteful attempts and got themselves into a kick chase style of play that didn’t allow them to gain the ascendancy of previous weeks.

With the scores at 0-0 at the break, the Warriors came out in the second half with gusto and on 48 minutes Matt Thorne found himself back on the scorers list after heading a well-directed header across the goal mouth to leave the Box Hill keeper stranded.

That started a series of attacks where the Warriors piled on the pressure with several entries into the box however they weren’t able to control the final touch to impact the scores.

On 57 minutes Kene Eze latched on to a loose ball at the back of the box to drive past two defenders then smash his shot into the roof of the net to seal the win.

North Geelong is back home this week and kick off against Moreland City is 12.45pm for the under20s and 3pm for seniors.

Fish just can’t resist the lure ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Surf Coast beaches fished well again over the past week, with well-conditioned Australian salmon devouring metal lures.

Bancoora and Jan Juc were standout locations on the rising tide for anglers pitching out Sea Iron Pelacus lures.

Down the coast, Craig Varker fished the Wild Dog Creek area for Australian Salmon to 1.2kg. Craig also gathered some scrub worms and fished the Bahram River at Apollo Bay where he banked some nice bream to 33cm.

Queenscliff produced bag-limit captures of squid on the grass beds and further around to the mouth of Swan Bay. Whiting were also still about, with the average size nudging 40cm.

Clifton Springs kept anglers entertained with squid. Anglers who spent time searching the deeper sections in 4m to 5m caught the biggest specimens.

Drifting for flathead nearby also paid off, with numerous fish to 45cm on the chew for those fishing baits and soft plastics.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Luht fished the Geelong waterfront for snapper on Monday evening. Avoiding the temptation to hunt down Pokemon, he cast out a pilchard and soon caught a snapper of 82cm that was a serious challenge while fishing land-based.

Tuna anglers had plenty of options down the west, with Port Fairy and Portland producing school fish to 15kg on lures cast into feeding schools. With the feeding tuna sometimes hard to tempt, allowing lures to sink for a few seconds before retrieving sometimes made all the difference.

Also down west, lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri were generous for anglers who put in the time. Numerous brown trout to 3kg were trolled up on Spotted Dog Rapalas and Daiwa Double Clutches along the east bank at Purrumbete, while lightly weighted pilchard fillets during the middle of the day worked well on Chinook salmon to 3kg.
