Artists are out in the open OPEN STUDIO: Kin Kin alpaca farmer Karen Grady will be one of the local artisans who will open their studio to the public for the inaugural Noosa Open Studios event that will run from Friday 19 August to Sunday 21 August.

Karen, and her husband Gordon, farm alpacas and raise silkworms then blend their fibres to create handspun, hand-woven garments.

Weaving and spinning alpaca and silk are Karen’s passion, and she loves to create garments from these lightweight fibres that are perfect for most climates from Noosa’s sub-tropical weather to Denmark, Paris and New York.

Karen said she relishes watching the alpacas in their paddocks, knowing the characteristics of each fleece, and seeing the silk moths emerge from their cocoons.

She hand-dyes the silk and blends these gorgeous fibres, which are then woven in her studio gallery on the farm.

It is a unique paddock-to-garment concept and this weekend everyone can have a chance to peak inside Karen’s studio and see how the gorgeous garments are created.

Karen’s studio is one of over 30 professional artists and artisans studios open during the Noosa Open Studios three-day event from Friday 19 August to Sunday 21 August from 10am to 4pm daily.

Golf in the rough

By Jolene Ogle MORE than 500 Peregian Springs locals rallied together at a public meeting on Saturday (13 August) to object to their beloved golf course being turned into housing.

The meeting was originally called in response to developer Aveo’s application to develop sections of the course, but Aveo withdrew the application prior to the meeting.

Meeting organiser Greg Smith

said he believed it was still important for the community to meet and a motion to create a resident’s association received unanimous support.

Speaking to the crowd, Mr Smith said the community would need to be ready to ramp up its opposition if needed as many believe Aveo could make future development applications.

“We will have to go through this exercise again ... These developers don’t just go away,” Mr Smith said.

“We are not against development but it has to be appropriate development. The golf course is the heart and the lungs of this community and it has to be preserved. It will be over my dead body that developers develop one square centimetre of that.”

A statement from an Aveo spokesperson confirmed there are no current or future plans to replace the applications and there are no plans to lodge anymore rezoning or development applications for the golf course land.

Aveo has said they will continue to market land as golf course frontage. When asked if this is “disingenuous” due to the future of the club being unknown, the spokesperson replied with the following statement: “We have a number of years of land sales and we want to come to a restructuring solution in the near term that is a lasting solution for the years to come.”

Aveo has confirmed their intention is to maintain the course and to have play start again as soon as possible.

“We will support Holdings (current land owner) and that Holdings with the benefit of that support will be able to maintain the course,” the spokesperson said.

“One of the concerns people had is that the course won’t be maintained. It’s not in our interest for the course to become run down and so Aveo will assist Holdings because we would like to see the course to become active again.”

Eighteen months ago Noosa arts doyen Tricia Bradford and arts lover Christine Pritchard met and discussed establishing an Open Studios event that celebrated the uniqueness of the Noosa region subsequent to its de-amalgamation through showcasing the exceptional talent of the region’s artistic and creative community. One hinterland property has separate studios for its three creative family members – a timber craftsman’s shed with requisite machinery; a word artist’s studio; and a separate pottery building. And to truly put new meaning to ‘Open’ Studio, a natural fibre weaver shall invite you to her studio ‘in the open’ under the spreading fig trees.

Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, a day to stop and thank veterans for their service and to remember those who fell while doing their duty. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company 6 RAR who fought in the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. On the third anniversary of the Long Tan battle a cross was raised on the site of the battle by the men of 6RAR and veterans from the battle gathered at the cross to commemorate the fallen. Over time, all Vietnam veterans adopted the day as one to commemorate those who served and died in the long war.

“I’m sad to say we buried 245 enemy the next morning, we recovered 13 of our dead and two had remained overnight wounded. They were thought to be dead, but they were still alive when we went back the next morning.

“The enemy suffered further casualties. We found a mass grave of 48 bodies and a General ... recently has said for the first time that it was a ‘bad battle and we lost about 1000’.

The wounded (Viet Cong) were dragged away or carried away and I can still see the blood that was on all the bushes as they went out on their escape route. They had terrible, horrendous casualties. They eventually gave up when they couldn’t overrun us, thanks to my soldiers with their machine-guns and rifles and courage and gallantry that day.”

Lt-Col Smith said out of 124 soldiers in Delta Company 6RAR, 23

were killed and 47 wounded over a 12-month period fighting in a “war we shouldn’t have been involved in”.

“But we were involved in (it) and everyone who went to Vietnam did everything they could to fight for the government of the day, which we were told to do,” he said.

“I recall it was an adventure when we were posted to go to Vietnam. What a wonderful adventure it was going to be. But never did I believe that in a period of 12 months I was going to lose 23 killed and 47 wounded. It saddens me and it also saddens me to realise that we killed so many enemy.”

After the Battle of Long Tan, for the duration of the war the Australian Army was never attacked head-on by the Vietnamese.

to power in three federal elections while Australia had soldiers at war.

So a lot of voters must have thought we were doing the right thing,” he said.

“Regardless of the feelings of citizens towards the war today, we should all be supporting the men and women who did their duty and served as they were told to do.”

Mr Whisker said he hoped the people of the Sunshine Coast and the Wide Bay districts would visit the exhibition and learn more about the Vietnam War and from that understand the problems that Australian servicemen faced in Vietnam and their feelings when they came home.

“We hope more people, if they know or meet a Vietnam veteran, will turn to him and says thanks for your service and give him a pat on the back,” he said.

With so much controversy surrounding the Vietnam War, many of the men and women who served have become forgotten heroes but, thanks to Lt-Col Smith’s lobbying of

the government, many of the soldiers who fought at the Battle of Long Tan have finally been recognised for their bravery with a Commendation for Gallantry medal.

“The battle has been singled out as the iconic battle of the war and I’m very proud to have commanded my soldiers,” Lt-Col Smith said.

“They did a wonderful job and the only reason I’m here today is because they saved my life and they saved the lives of us who survived.

I’m not the hero, my soldiers were the hero.”

The Vietnam War commemorative exhibition is located on Maple Street, Cooroy, between the post office and memorial hall and is open to the public daily from 10am to 4pm until Sunday 21 August.

The exhibition features Vietnam War relics as well as photos and stories from those who served. The Vietnam Veterans Day memorial service will be held at the Cooroy War Memorial on Sunday 21 August at 10am.

THIS Thursday 18 August marks the 50-year anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan and while the blood that stained the rubber plantation has long been washed away, the emotional torment of the brave men who fought still remains.

The Battle of Long Tan has been described as one of the most vicious battles of the Vietnam War, where 105 Australian soldiers faced more than 2000 Viet Cong over a threehour firefight in monsoonal rain on 18 August 1966.

Then Major Harry Smith of 6RAR's Delta Company, who was 33 at the time, led his troops into the ferocious battle that would see 18 Australian lives lost and possibly hundreds of Viet Cong killed.

Speaking at the opening of the Cooroy Pomona RSL sub-branch’s Vietnam War commemorative exhibition last Thursday 11 August, Lieutenant-Colonel Smith recounted the horror of the battlefield on that day 50 years ago.

“We were sent out on a patrol to try and locate what we thought was 40 to 50 of the enemy that had mortared the task force base the night before,” he said.

Lt-Col Smith said a lack of communication meant the 108-strong company were walking blindly towards over 2000 Vietnamese soldiers.

“According to the enemy history that has now been published, they were going to set an ambush along the road from Long Tan to Long Phuoc to capture or torment the enemy who came out to, what they called ‘draw the tiger from the mountain’ after the mortaring of the base. They expected us to come out along there. We in fact went straight out to the east of the base, we didn’t go down there,” he said.

Lt-Col Smith described the ensuing firefight as horrendous and said many of the Australian soldiers were “clobbered” and were desperately awaiting ammunition supplies from air support.

“The air force brought in ammunition ... after that we had plenty of ammunition. We didn’t have to conserve rounds. Prior to that you would

PUPPIES were licking their lips when the local Peregian Springs community came together on Monday 15 August to raise funds for animals in need as part of the annual RSPCA Cup Cake Day. The fundraiser was held at the popular Pool Cafe in Peregian Springs and event organiser Julia Loaney said she was pleased with the turnout.

“The cupcakes were selling like hotcakes,” Ms Loaney said.

The morning tea was a sellout and the group was able to raise $661 for the RSPCA. Special guests included Noosa RSPCA centre manager Nicole Cleary, Dr Alice O’Hare from the Peregian Springs Vet Surgery, Sunshine Coast councillor Steve Robinson and the cast from the Coolum Theatre Players who were on hand to launch their play, Sylvia, about a pup that is abandoned in a park.

Ms Cleary said it was great to see the community turn out in support of such a great cause and said anyone looking to adopt a furry friend can be a champion and adopt from the centre.

The RSPCA Noosa Champion Sale is on now with cats only $50 and dogs only $125 until 25 August.

According to the Aveo spokesperson, a new owner may be possible into the future but no details were given.

“The course will be maintained to a good standard to enable it to quickly come up to playing standard once a user is identified,” the spokesperson said.

“Holdings is actively talking to a number of parties with the objective of getting play back across the course as soon as possible and this could take some months.

“The interested parties have experience in running golf facilities.”

But not everyone is convinced Aveo has plans to reopen the course.

Local resident Debra Bambrook said she believes the developers caused the closure of the club on purpose and has urged everyone to push for a quick sale of the course to secure the future of the community.

“We should really push now for a quick sale of the golf course to someone who wants it to succeed as a golf course, like Ian Baker-Finch, so that it does not go further downhill under any new management model that must be designed not to succeed,” she said.

“It appears it is not in Aveo’s interest for it to succeed long-term or even short-term or they would have supported the previous management model, that was succeeding, for another 12 months.”

Lend Mark a hand

To encourage Mark and let him know the community is cheering for him, locals have started to paint their little fingernail pink.

One of the first to have their nail painted was Mark, followed by a host of coworkers including Lindy McAskill, who many might recognise as the friendly face on reception at the Tewantin Noosa RSL. Mark’s wife Trish has also painted her pinky pink and now wears the colour with pride as she supports her husband’s battle with cancer.

Anyone who would like to show their support for Mark can paint their little fingernail pink and post the image to Noosa Today’s Facebook page.

HE'S been described as a local legend who is always willing to help a mate and now Noosa locals are coming together to lend a hand, well a pinky, to Mark Murphy.

Diagnosed with cancer more than four years ago, Mark has been the regular face in his store, Mark Murphy’s Bottle Shop in the Tewantin Noosa RSL, where he is always on hand to share a laugh, talk shop or point you in the direction of the week’s specials.

Just a day after arriving home from his honeymoon four and a half years ago, Mark was diagnosed with cancer and has spent the last four weeks in hospital.

Fisheries review launch MEMBER for Noosa, Glen Elmes, has just announced the release of the State Government’s Green Paper on Fisheries Management Reform and urges the public and stakeholders to have their say on the future management of Queensland’s fisheries resources.

“The Queensland Government has just announced a further $10 million towards the buy back of commercial fishing licences, an amount identical to that as promised by the LNP prior to the last election,” he said.

With tension rising among the community and commercial fishers in recent weeks, the Queensland Fisheries Review is timely for Noosa.

“This is a controversial issue in the Noosa electorate and I would en-

courage proponents on both sides of the issue to have their say prior to the close of submissions on 30 September 2016.

“The Green Paper has identified ten areas for reform which will be used in the development a strategic policy to ensure the sustainability of resources and the economic viability of the existing industry sectors.

Sea of blue creates a spectacle

By Hollie Harris BLUE Blubber jellyfish are making their migration through our waters in the tens of thousands.

Former marine mammal trainer and local member of the Australian Institute of Marine Rescues, Jonah Cooper, has been taking jet-ski tours out in Laguna Bay this week and was surprised by the arrival of the Blue Blubber swarms.

He has had to weave through massive blooms of the jellyfish which are making their way through the bay

on their migration.

Commonly known as Blue Blubbers, these jellies have arrived in masses and are beginning to wash up around our beaches.

“There’s thousands out in the bay at the moment. It’s quite a sight to see so many.

“Their brilliant blue colours combined with the clear waters we are experienceing at the moment provide a real spectacle.

“The schools of tiny fish which are piloting each jelly on their journey are fun to see.

It’s nice to know that our local turtle population will be

feasting at the moment,“ Mr Cooper said.

Recent research suggests that jellyfish populations are increasing and that abundances fluctuate with climatic cycles.

“I’m expecting to see many more. They can migrate in extraordinarily large blooms,” he said.

The sting of a blue jelly is not particularly dangerous but may cause irritation and swelling.

“If a sting does occur, the best way to treat the affected area is to wash it with warm to hot water,” Mr Cooper said.

Blue jellies are appearing in big numbers around Noosa as they arrive for their annual migration.

THIS weekend more than 40 local artists and artisans will be armed with paintbrushes, canvases and some of Noosa’s best tourism tips thanks to Tourism Noosa’s Welcome to Noosa program.

The Noosa Open Studios three-day celebration of local art starts this weekend and to be ready to welcome visitors to the region, the artists taking part in the inaugural event have completed the Welcome to Noosa program.

An initiative by Tourism Noosa, the Welcome to Noosa program arms participants with great advice for visitors and top tips for ensuring tourists have the best visit to the region possible.

The Noosa Open Studios event will run from Friday 19 August to Sunday 21 August and will see local artists open their studios to the public for a sneak peak at where their works are created.

For many years, parents have been taking their young children along for the music and fun time program at the Salvation Army facility in Noosaville.

Last Wednesday the group held a very special 10th birthday party to celebrate their long-standing place within the community.

Salvation Army officer Lieutenant Lara Sutcliffe has been leading this program for under-fives and their parents for the last five years and has watched the group grow in numbers. “We want to share what we do with the local Noosa community. “Some parents have been coming here for the last 10 years with their children. As each one gets older, the next ones join in. We have a couple of parents who have been here

ST THOMAS More Primary School Fete was held last weekend, and once again massive crowds from the local community attended.

Fete co-ordinator Donna Frey said it was a fantastic fund-raiser for St Thomas More Primary School. “I was so proud of what our school community can achieve, and I have to thank my fete team and stallholders for the amazing volunteer effort to make this fete happen,� Ms Frey said.

Kids converged MORE than 1300 kids converged on Cooroy Sports Complex last Sunday, 14 August, for the annual rugby league Sunshine Coast Mini Mid Carnival.

Youngsters from as far south as Bribie Island and Caboolture and as far north as Gympie played in a roundrobin style carnival alongside their idols, the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Queensland Rugby League operations manager Nathan McLean said 1350 kids registered for the event. “(It) is a fantastic response and it’s a great opportunity for the youngsters to meet and learn ball skills from the Sunshine Coast Falcons,” he said.

The event, once described as “the best carnival in Queensland for this age group” by the Brisbane Broncos, saw 15 fields in play at the same time with a total of 225 games played featuring under-sevens through to under10s.

More hot air THE letters by Steve Hall and Ken Lynn (Noosa Today, 11 August) convey a questionable understanding of the function of CO2 gas molecules in atmospheric energy exchanges. The change in global temperatures may or may not be due to CO2 gas. It could be due to other variables such as changes in cloud cover.

Science is decided by experimental evidence not by opinions. Malcolm Roberts is asking what is the experimental data showing CO2 gas molecules produced by human activities cause dangerous global warming. He is not asking for a review or the opinions of scientific societies.

In my experience as a former member of the AIP the opinions of these societies reflect those of their executives, not necessarily those of the members. It doesn’t matter what individual scientists think. What matters is what the laws of physics say. You do not have to be a research scientist to understand these laws. There is no law of physics called the greenhouse effect.

Changes in global temperatures are easily explained by the laws of thermodynamics - there is no need to invoke a fictitious greenhouse effect. There is no rational basis to waste billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on large scale (grid replacement) solar and wind farms when it could be used for other purposes such as providing cheap and reliable electricity to improve the standard of living for the world’s poor.

Interesting agenda THE agendas for Noosa Council’s recent August Committee Meetings provide interesting reading. The Planning and Environment Committee had to confirm the defence of two court appeals in Noosaville, one concerning signage and the other involved a medical centre carpark.

Considering staff reports for this council meeting have recommended to refuse additional conditions for a restaurant in Noosaville and a relocation application for a well-known radiology company, it’s likely there’ll be two more additions to the appeals list.

The meeting’s last agenda item was a confidential session to discuss their ongoing court appeal for a Cooroy Service Centre. The Services and Organisation Committee Meeting contained a recommendation by the CEO to refuse ratepayer funding for a proposed cultural centre and also reviewed proposals for significant changes to waste management services.

The Aquatic Centre, Noosa Leisure Centre and the ’J’ continue to operate at a loss, while confirmation their capital works program for the financial year finished more than two months behind schedule should have disappointed all concerned.

Climate of talk THE Palaszczuk Government has extended public consultation for the “Advancing Climate Action in Queensland” discussion paper. The discussion paper reveals some staggering statistics, including how we’re responsible for 30 per cent of Australia’s emissions and how land clearing in Queensland releases 36 million tons of carbon per year into the atmosphere.

The state policy response on renewable energy targets, vegetation protection and emission reductions deserve credit, despite timeframes for action (2050) being fairly unambitious. Unfortunately where it really falls apart is the Environment Minister’s clumsy attempt to endorse expansion of coal mines, such as Adani’s Carmichael proposal.

As the Great Barrier Reef cooks, the State Government cannot justify approval of a mine so massive it would be equivalent to the seventh largest carbon emitting country in the world.

The carbon dioxide stored in the Galilee Basin has the potential to warm the world beyond the maximum two degrees C average increase, agreed to at the Paris Climate Conference. Coal is internationally in decline and recent reports indicate Queensland taxpayers will be left with a $3 billion dollar clean-up bill, after the miners all bail out.

Koala trees pointless REGARDING (Noosa Today, 4 August) Kay Fielden’s statement regarding the planting of koala trees at Wallace Park. There are no koalas left there at Wallace Park, so planting koala trees there would be pointless, as they have been killed by pet dogs, the busy roads run over by cars and worst of all development, when the huge estate, Noosa Waters was built and hundreds and hundreds of koalas were killed when their home of trees was flattened.

One other issue is bats are our valuable world pollinators along with the declining bees - bats pollinate native trees and the gum and eucalyptus trees that koalas feed on - no trees, no koalas - China is already suffering the consequences of losing their bee colonies and you can see videos of people painstakingly pollinating the plants and trees, by hand individually, the job that bats and bees do for free.

There is a prediction of a dire future for our planet and our food, if we lose these essential pollinators it could wipe us out - with food shortages and starvation. Killing these valuable animals is putting our future generations at peril, not to mention the wild diversity of animals and birds that rely on the trees.

If Kay Fielden truly respects koalas as she states, then she should respect the bats as the koalas need the bats to survive.

Wrong target I AM confused why our local member Glen Elmes has had a meeting with his party’s big guns to discuss funding for the Beckmans Road upgrade.

When I last looked, Labor were in power in Queensland, so I would think he should be talking to them. I am not sure if he did any hard lobbying for Noosa projects when the LNP were last running Queensland, but he didn’t have much success (e.g. The number of public beds at Noosa hospital is now less than the number of private beds. It used to be the other way round!) Like some other letter writers, I don’t think Mr Elmes has been a very effective member for Noosa.

Different universe THE letter from Case Smith (Noosa Today, 4 August) is, itself, “empirical” evidence that we live in parallel universes. In his, evidence disproves the global warming hypothesis. In mine, casual observations and diverse scientific evidence all support a world that is rapidly heating due to anthropogenic CO2. My evidence includes that every month in the last 400 has been warmer than the previous 30-year average and every month in the last 14 has been a record high for that month. Partially due to this, species extinctions are occurring at a rate unprecedented in any mass extinction in the Earth’s history. Discomforting information to Google.

Case writes that we have to choose between absolutely ruining our planet for human inhabitation and having affordable electricity. Even if this were true, I see no problem. I’ll take the higher cost of electricity. When a person with gangrene is asked “would you rather lose your

leg or your life”, the decision is not an “insoluble dilemma.” Anyway, his information is out of date. Battery technology, solar efficiency and mass production have worked together to bring down the cost of solar electricity and make it possible to economically supply ALL of our energy needs. It is simply a matter of political will.

And it is at that level where we fail. Our leaders do not understand science. GW is not a matter of opinion or ideology. It is not concerned by economics or fashion or politics, all artificial constructs of the human mind. If anti-intellects like Mr Smit have their way, the Earth will continue to warm and we won’t like it.

Roundabout way I FIND it surprising that some drivers are complaining about our wonderful roundabouts.

Noosa Council should be congratulated for the decision to install roundabouts and stick with them.

I have driven buses, trucks and cars and have lived in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and here in sunny Queensland and regularly skite that I live in one of the best locations on the planet with only one set of traffic lights to be found in Noosa.

My travels have recently included going around hundreds of roundabouts throughout England, Wales and Scotland and they are fantastic for keeping traffic flowing and are a much more efficient use of intersections as stopping at lights slows traffic flow and are usually installed frankly because of poor driving by some causing accidents.

Please keep our wonderful roundabouts and perhaps those complaining should re read the traffic rules or get additional driver training, especially those that don’t use their indicators and/or stop at the roundabouts when there is plenty of time to merge with other roundabout users.

Giving your life over to anything but the Earth’s support system - Sol, air, water, complex molecules, harmonious social gatherings ... is like a respiratory patient refusing oxygen for the pills that the doctor has in his hand labelled “oxygen".

Money is that fake oxygen, and by using it we are starving ourselves of real air. Without air/ oxygen there is no clarity ... ask any mountain climber. Clear air also brings perspective.

Electric shock I’M ALL for better use of ratepayers’ money and am concerned about the messy potential start to using electric buses as the recharging facilities have not been thought through.

I further question what is the operational and financial viability of these buses - are we going to have drivers standing around for long periods while recharging is going on, has council done a full and openly available cost benefit study regarding the use of these buses, have other councils tried them and were the buses deemed a financial success in all respects.

These are the simple questions which council should answer before any trial commences - however I don’t recall any council announcement regarding the bus trial, has there been one?

Children are at higher risk of rabies than adults and three vaccine doses prior to travel could be life-saving.

To seek advice regarding all infections in Bali including malaria, zika, dengue and Japanese encephalitis can be discussed at DOT Travel Clinic before travelling.

Building approvals are skyrocketing THE Sunshine Coast is booming with the Sunshine Coast Council issuing a massive $1.29 billion worth of building approvals in the 2015/'16 financial year — the highest level in seven years.

Council has published its Development Indicators Annual Highlights report, which presents a selection of statistics on development activity during the last financial year.

Planning portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said good news for the region’s economy was evident throughout the report.

“For the second consecutive financial year, council has recorded building approvals with a value in excess of $1 billion,” Cr Dickson said.

“The $1.29 billion of building approvals issued in 2015/'16 is 11 per cent higher compared to the $1.17 billion of building approvals issued in the 2014/'15 financial year.”

Cr Dickson said not only was this the highest value of building approvals recorded in the past seven years, 2968 lots had been created through the plan sealing process, making it a record high for the past five years, and would stimulate further building activity.

“Building approval values during the last financial year included $701 million in new dwellings (up 15 per cent compared to 2014/'15), $203 million for multiple unit dwellings (up 19 per cent) and $156 million in additions and alterations (up 141 per cent),” he said.

Cr Dickson said development had increased significantly on the Sunshine Coast over recent years, with the 2015/'16 figures showing a 114 per cent increase in building approvals since the $607 million recorded in the 2012/'13 financial year.

A quarter of Baby Boomers employ a cleaner, with 27 per cent of Gen X forking out so they can skip the home duties.

And while gardening might’ve once been considered a retirement hobby, a third of Baby Boomers now hire someone to do their gardening on a regular basis.

ServiceSeeking.com.au CEO Jeremy Levitt says the survey is reflective of today’s busy lifestyle and the fact that many people are so time poor they need to outsource everyday services.

One in five respondents spend in excess of $150 a month on their hired help. The majority (49 per cent) spend up to $50 a month, while four per cent spend at least $400 a month.

Master Builders association regional manager Will Wilson said the Development Indictors Annual Highlights report indicated the economic outlook for the Sunshine Coast economy and building industry was very stable.

“Gone are the days when only the rich had a cleaner. It’s so commonplace these days that we have more than 11,800 cleaning businesses registered on our site who quoted on 4588 new cleaning jobs in the last month alone.”

While earning capacity had an impact on services used, at least one in five respondents with a salary of less than $75,000 still employed a cleaner (19 per cent) or gardener (22 per cent).

“The report shows us that business confidence in the building and construction industry consistently remained at a high level during the 2015/'16 financial year,” Mr Wilson said.

Those living in NSW are least likely to scrub their own kitchens with one in three outsourcing to a cleaner, while the weather in Victoria is the least gardening-friendly with 27 per cent opting to get someone else

“Steady and sustainable growth in development over the longer term has positive flow-on effects that contribute to increased economic activity across the region, including employment generation, business confidence and consumer spending.”

If the salary increased to $75,000$125,000, the likelihood of having a cleaner rose to 32 per cent, with further jumps to 39 per cent if the salary was up to $200,000 and 43 per cent for those earning more than $200,000.

The lowdown on rental THE REIQ has recently released data for the June quarter and the residential vacancy rate in Noosa has increased to 2.4 per cent. This is the third quarter in a row that the vacancy rate has increased, with the December quarter being 0.7 per cent and the March quarter being 1.4 per cent. At 2.4 per cent the vacancy rate is also the highest it has been since the September quarter in 2012.

Encouragingly, the Darling Downs and southwest Queensland had a strong month, increasing by more than 50 per cent - the highest monthly result in three years.

Central Queensland and Mackay and Whitsunday were the only regions not to see an increase over the three months to June.

“You don’t get anything unless you work hard for it and I have been working very hard. Owning your own business will do that. It’s all about keeping your ethics and working for the clients.”

David said it was exciting to be an independent sales agent and he loved having more freedom to help clients.

“My local knowledge helps,” he said. “And I have great contacts as well as the freedom to work with clients in a range of innovative ways, including marketing.”

For David, it’s been a busy year after taking the plunge and launching his own real estate brand David Berns Real Estate along with operations and marketing manager Meta Georgeson.

“It was a big step to go out on my own as an independent, but our feet are really on the ground and running,” he said. “In our first month we had record sales and some were above the asking price.”

Since launching a year ago, the David

Berns Real Estate team has expanded to include sales agent Heidi Woodman and large-scale developments, which are paving the way for a successful second year in business.

“We are excited to be working on some major deals,” David said. “We can’t say too much, but we’re working on a sale that will secure a record price for Eumundi. Offers have already come in.”

For David, the future is looking bright and he can’t wait to grow the already $20 million worth of real estate sold.

Alley in new experience

By HOLLIE HARRIS NOOSA Creative Precinct is proud to announce its next Junction Alley on 27 August which is set to be an experience that Noosa has never seen before.

Co-founders Brian Keayes and Roland West are committed to bringing to Noosa an impressive collaboration of music, visual arts and culture.

The third Junction Alley event will take big screen to a whole new level with an enormous light wall offering festival goers a new visual experience.

The light wall will be more than 10 meters wide and is made up by a staggering six projectors all working together to create a sensory overload of visual arts.

“It will be and incredibly immersive experience. We’ve been able to create this light wall to celebrate how visual arts and music can work together,” Mr Keayes said.

The festival has been a great success so far and on the verge of its first birthday organisers are due to announce a major line-up of music next

week to top off the bevvy of markets, food and arts filling the laneway.

“We were inspired by St Jerome’s Laneway in Melbourne and The White Night Festival.

We wanted to create the largest projection screen ever in Noosa and have been working with two local projection artists to bring it to life,” Mr Keayes said.

The co-founders have a vision to attract a more diverse crowd to the area and slowly build a network of like-minded people who are looking for new experiences.

“We are really excited about our next event. It has been a huge feat to bring it all together but we really want to show that this is for the community.

“We want to invite Noosa to come and experience the Junction in new light,” he said.

Finals set to launch career FOR the past seven weeks, the region’s best young talent has been duelling it out for a coveted place in the finals of The Battle of the Rising Stars at the Noosa Surf Club.

The winners from the last two weeks of semi-finals will now prepare for the Grand Final which will be held at the Noosa Surf Club this Sunday, 21 August.

Paradise City delivers two hours of classic Guns N’ Roses mega hits like Sweet

Child O’ Mine, November Rain, Welcome To The Jungle, Don’t Cry, You Could Be Mine and Paradise City.

Complete with a top shelf sound and lighting production and detailed costume design, this show will rock your socks off.

THE Noosa Jazz Party is back with 10 fun-filled days of swinging jazz from the Roaring Twenties and beyond from Friday 26 August to Sunday 4 August.

Now in its 25th year, the Noosa Jazz Party brings together music lovers and leading jazz musicians from around the country who are ready to entertain the crowds with classic jazz.

The centre-piece of the festival is the nightly entertainment from Thursday 1 September to Sunday 4 September that will see The J, Noosa Heads, come alive with a flurry of swinging tunes.

Organisers are urging locals to get in quick because early bird tickets are already being sold to interstate jazz fans.

Tickets for performances

at The J on Thursday 1, Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September are available now at $40 per night or $135 for the four-nights as an early bird special.

The music starts at 5pm and goes until 11pm. A shuttle bus will be available to The J theatre, plus a bar will be open and a lounge area.

Noosa Jazz Party events will also feature in a range of venues throughout the shire including the popular lunch series at the River Deck Restaurant, Rump House Restaurant, Hastings Street’s Miss Moneypenny’s and a free Sunday concert at the Lions Riverstage, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

The Noosa Jazz Club has also teamed up with the Noosa Chorale to present two concerts at The J, Noosa Heads

that will celebrate the Roaring Twenties.

The concerts will be held on Friday 28 August and Saturday 29 August with 70 of Noosa’s finest singers led by conductor Adrian King teaming up with the Australian Jazz Ensemble featuring Bob Barnard AM, Paul Furniss, Peter Locke, Nigel Date and James Clark, plus remarkable singer Juliarna Clark.

The audience is encouraged to get into the theme of the night and dress in their best 1920s gear as they dance along to Roaring Twenties jazz greats and all-time hits from Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin.

Restaurant skills come home Ingredients 16 lge raw king prawns - shelled and deveined with tail left on.

4 pickled onions peeled and cut in half.

100gm sea blight, picked, blanched, refreshed and put in fridge.

1 white onion peeled.

1 leek.

2 cloves of garlic.

300ml pure cream.

2 sprigs of thyme.

2 bay leaves.

1 tsp truffle oil.

Salt and pepper.

4 globe artichokes, peeled, cleaned and cut in half then blanched in boiling salted water with lemon for 5 minutes, chilled and set aside.

1 bunch woodland sorrel, leaves picked and washed.

200ml prawn oil.

120gm panko breadcrumbs.

6 tbls (heaped) malto dextrin powder.

300ml olive oil.

10ml white balsamic vinegar.

Method Peel prawns (keep heads and shells) keep 12 for serving with tails left on, the other 4 remove all shell and put aside for prawn crumb.

Take prawn heads and shells and roast in 180c oven for 30 mins, add 270ml olive oil in small pot, then the roasted shells put in stove on a gentle heat for 1 hour (strain and put aside).

To serve Serves four people. Smear 1 tablespoon of puree on each plate, place 3 prawns on each, separate onions into little half circles and place around the prawns, garnish with sea blight, sorrel leaves, dress with vinaigrette and lastly dust with prawn crumb!

Take four of the cleaned prawns, place in a shallow frypan with the prawn oil on a low heat and cook for 30 mins.

Remove prawn meat, place on tray in 100c oven for one hour until very dry. Keep prawn oil to one side.

Once prawns are dry, put in blender and pulse until fine crumb, mix with bread crumbs, add 3/4 of prawn oil and toast in 160c oven for 10 mins until golden brown and then put aside.

Take 6 spoons of malto powder, place in

bowl and slowly whisk in remainder of prawn oil until a nice orange snow forms, add to prawn crumbs and mix well. Set aside.

Place a fry pan on the heat until very hot, add onions face down with a little olive oil and seasoning and caramelise for 3 mins, then turn down heat and add 150ml white wine and place on a lid and cook for 5 mins, then remove from pan and set aside.

By Doug Mcconnell NOOSA'S golf pennant team travelled to Nambour for round 7 and came out the winners 6 games to 4. The hoops total told the story - Noosa 60 hoops to Nambour’s 51.

Individual performances were:

Noosa’s Niven Gugich lost to Theo Kleiberg 3-7 but defeated Max Kilmister 7-2; John Olsen fell to Bill Habner 3-7 but won against Nambour’s Pat Manser 7-2. Noosa’s Stewart McConnell enjoyed wins against Max Kilmister (7-4) and Theo Kleiberg (7-5) with Colin Hindson falling to Nambour’s Bill Habner (3-5) but winning against Nambour’s Pat Manser (7-3).

The doubles matches were split with Noosa’s Gugich/McConnell defeating Kleiberg/Kilmister 10-6. Noosa’s Olsen/Hindson combination went down to Habner/Manser 5-10. All in all a good win, putting Noosa in second place on the pennant table with Bedderim/Headland sitting comfortably on top.

By Lucy Whitehall Noosa Dolphins UNDER-8: The Noosa Fins defeated St Andrews 55-15. A fabulous opening try from St Andrews, having secured great ball from the breakdown, was met by a scratching of the head and several yawns as the Banditos tried to gather their wits about them. St Andrews schooled Noosa at the breakdowns with very well drilled clear outs allowing them, during most of the first half, to match each of our tries. Finally, the Peso dropped and the Fins began to play their normal game of ball stealing and talented open running to dominate the score line, running in 11 tries to St Andrews 2. Man of the match was James Walker who had a terrific second half of straight running, high work rate at the breakdown and some heavy duty tackling.

Under-8: The Noosa Reds defeated St Andrews 80-10. A committed effort at ruck time saw the Reds ease to a comfortable victory against St Andrews on Saturday morning. Defence was solid from the Reds as an improved effort was called for by the coaching panel. Zac in particular stood out as he chased to the final whistle. Player of the match went to Darcy Fairbanks.

Under-9: The Noosa Fins defeated the University team 11-2. A massive effort from the Fins left University floundering in a fast-paced, physical contest. Even the loan of Noosa Reds top players, Atticus, Oliver and Oscar, couldn’t

Under-10: The Noosa Fins defeated the Noosa Black team 17-7. It was anticipated that the match between the Noosa Blacks and the Noosa Fins would be a battle bringing everyone out to watch our boys play - slugging it out in a highquality affair. The match ended up being just that as each team gave their all. Our little champs lifted it to another level to dominate the first half. Our boys displayed amazing commitment and courage to only go down to the Fins 7 -17. Players of the match went to Caide, Tyler and Harry.

Under-10: The Noosa Reds defeated Maroochydore 49-7

in what was a superb display of a focused team. A hat-trick to Tom, a double to Josh and tries to Flynn, Smith, Pearl and Captain Oskar saw the Reds come out winners. Player of the match went to Oskar Hammersly.

Under-11: The Noosa Fins defeated Caloundra 49-nil in what was a physical match this week for the Fins coming up against a strong Caloundra forwards pack. Great match boys - you should all feel proud of how you are playing. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the 2 Caloundra boys who were injured during the match.

Under-11: The Noosa Reds defeated the Brothers 24-12. It was a great game to watch this week as the Reds took it to a determined Brothers team for the full 40 minutes. They remained committed and focused on the game which saw them secure the victory in the dying minutes. It was a super effort, and it is fantastic to watch the boys pulling together, and as a result coming out victorious.

Wombats ahead on many levels THE Olympics have created a lot of sleep deprivation in recent weeks, but they’re also inspiring a new generation of footballers through the play of our Socceroos and Matildas.

As the regular season winds down, a number of Cooroora United teams are getting ready to play the most important games of the season.

Last week, a few of the teams got together Cooroy Community Bank’s Geoff Edwards to say thanks. More than 200 club members are wearing training shirts supplied by the bank - one of the many ways Bendigo Bank continues to support the Wombats.

Cooroora United president Tony McCarthy took the time to thank branch manager Geoff Edwards for the Community Bank’s long-term support to the local club faithful for their part in a season that has seen the club move ahead on many levels.

“We all know that sponsors play a key role in supporting a team and the Cooroy Community Bank branch sponsorship of Cooroora United is one of many who continue to help us playing the game we love. NOOSA Eagles Soccer Club continued on their winning streaks this week showing the parents and coaches that all this hard work is truly paying off.

Under-8 Gold defeated the Buddina Sea Eagles 4-2. What a way to end the season, with no subs and all heart to take on the Buddina Sea Eagles. Montanah Ward and Bella Hillegers were great in goals, only letting one through each. Xavier Attard was awarded the player of the day for his big boot on the backline getting the nickname for the day

“the master of defence".

The leading goal scorer was Joel Fitzgerald who was all over the field and scored three goals.

Bella Hillegers also scored one goal.

Under-9 Black defeated the Stella Monsoons 4-0. What started out to be a very close game and almost a kick to kick scenario at one point, with the Eagles drawing at half time - nil all. Coach Andy had a quiet chat to the boys and they came out a different team with Charlie Drew showing some great skills and determination, putting through the Eagles first

goal. Alaska Rosenkranz followed up by scoring the next two goals and then Kieran Dow came through the pack in the D scoring our fourth goal for the day. Iggy Gerber, Josh Plant and Thompson Nimac all did a great job in defence. Nathan Hindmarsh, as always never slowing or giving up as a true all-rounder.

ONCE the shock of Midget Farrelly’s death had passed - we knew he was battling a life-threatening illness but seemed to be winning - I resisted putting down my thoughts until I’d seen the avalanche of tributes that came from all kinds of obituarists, from those who had known him well to those who worshipped him but never knew him.

It seemed there was not a lot left to say, but then I began to note the comments on the blog threads and news sites to the effect that this great champion’s passing was that much sadder because he had never been given appropriate recognition in his lifetime. It’s a popular line, trotted out from time to time, but it simply doesn’t weigh up with the facts. I think Midget’s memory and legacy is only strengthened by the truth, so I offer this.

He was a boyhood hero of mine and I knew him personally for 42 years, but I should point out that we were friends for only a small part of that time. I never regarded him as an enemy and I never stopped admiring his skill as a surfer and a surfboard designer, but like a lot of people, I was frozen out of his life for having strayed from his singular vision of how surfing should be, or should be presented.

From 1966 to the day he died, Midget believed that some people sought to deny him his rightful place in surfing history and exalt instead those who had led surfing down the path of drugs and destruction.

His resolve to distance himself and his surfing milieu from this was as strong as it was long-lived. Australia’s next great world champion, Nat Young, whom Midget had mentored, was only the most public face of the infidels, who stretched down the line through shaping guru Bob McTavish to the magazine and movie makers of the period to lowly hacks like myself.

From time to time, I found myself secretly admiring Midget’s unbending determination, but I also wondered why he couldn’t forgive and forget. For lesser offenders like myself, there were periods when we were released from the naughty corner. In France in 1998, for example, my wife and I were the Farrellys’ tour guides through the Basque Country, and Midget and I surfed together and shared some good red wine lunches.

Midget could be great company.

But by the following year, when I brought him to the Noosa Festival of Surfing for a rematch of the 1964 first world titles final, we were feuding again over some imagined slight.

About a decade ago, at the request of a group of Australian surfers who held the view that Midget had not been properly recognised, I wrote a long article for The Surfers Journal for which I carefully analysed the media coverage of Midget’s competitive career, roughly from 1962 to 1974. I found that for the first few years he dominated it and thereafter shared it with newer heroes, such as Nat Young. There were a couple of mildly questionable opinion pieces, notably John Witzig’s “End of an Era”, but there was no evidence of any concerted campaign to diminish his importance to the sport and culture.

What I did find, however, was that he was unquestionably the dominant competitive surfer of his era, from his win at Makaha in January 1963 to his win in South Africa as a professional in 1970. He won a world title in 1964, and finished a close second in 1968 and 1970. He might easily have won three world titles, but for a claim to greatness, he certainly did enough.

A complex and difficult man to some, he was also a loyal friend and mentor to many. I wish he’d allowed me to know him better, but I have lasting and cherished memories of those brief interludes when I think he did regard me as a friend.

Mr Chapman said the idea of the jogathon has spread throughout other schools and now, if all the Sunshine Beach runners were end-to-end in a relay they would run half way around Australia. Current health and physical education teacher Cameron Porter said the jogathon was an opportunity for Sunshine Beach State School to highlight the importance of physical activity and in particular the correlation between physical activity and academic achievement.

“The correlation between physical

activity and academic achievement is linked to a variety of factors,” he said.

“These include increased blood flow improving brain growth, improvement in concentration skills and better engagement with peers and teachers.”

Sunshine Beach State School students had a great day running laps in the beautiful weather with their friends and family members.

Priya in Year 2 said the Jogathon was fun because “I ran lots of laps with my friends. My parents ran some laps with me and they had a great time too.

I can’t wait until next year’s jogathon!”

The Rococos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers will face Caloundra at Caloundra in a knock out semi-final this Saturday afternoon.

It is the 17th time in the past 20 years the boys from Noosa have advanced to the business end of the season and take with them an encouraging two goal win over an improved Aspley in Brisbane last Saturday.

In fact plenty of positives about the Tiger performance with in-form guns Hill, Copeland and Moloney continuing their dominance throughout the midfield with youngster Corey Boardman again among the seniors best as he too closes in on what has been a magnificent season for the 18-year-old.

The return of young gun Jai Fitzpatrick to the seniors and of course the way he went about it would also boost the confidence of the Tiger brigade as they attempt to turnaround a 27 point loss to the panthers a fortnight ago.

Great also to see coach Sammy Faure booting half a dozen goals last weekend and the presence of big forward Jarrod Westell also a telling factor in the win.

Both will need to remanufacture similar performances if the Tigers are to proceed to yet another preliminary final.

Excellence rewarded sport Between the

SATURDAY evening held a large gathering of representatives from surf clubs from as far away as Darwin and Gove in the Northern Territory, right down to the Queensland border.

The occasion was the 2016 Awards of Excellence for Surf Life Saving Queensland.

The dinner was held at Twin Waters and those in attendance agreed that it was in deed a gala event.

In his opening address, state president Ralph Devlin welcomed honored guests. He then went on and extended a very warm welcome of encouragement to representatives of the Gove and Darwin clubs situated as they are in the remote regions of the Northern Territory.

In reference to all guests he thanked them for their outstanding commitment to, “what has now become a very complex organisation”.

For our clubs on the Sunshine coast there were several outstanding awards. Among those were the awards that went to members of Mudjimba. This was good to see. As one of our smaller clubs on the Sunshine Coast their contribution to our organisation for the 2015/6 season has indeed been outstanding.

At the recent Sunshine Coast Awards of

Excellence they received the Club of the Year and finished in second place for the very prestigious Buhk-Wilks Trophy.

Then on Saturday evening Michael Hughes was named Volunteer of the Year and Guy Tanner Assessor of the Year; and following this Peter Harvey received a special commendation as runner-up in the coveted Life Saver of the Year.

Closer to home Brock Redwood of Sunshine Beach was voted the Rookie Coach of the Year. With their progressive attitude to competition this was good to see. With a young member such as Brock receiving this award it speaks volumes for the seasons ahead.

Apart from those named as recipients there were many more from both Sunshine and Mudjimba who also made the finals of the judging – well done to all.

Toward the end of the presentations came one that was described by one veteran as being “what our job is all about.” That was the Dearlove Medal, presented for the most outstanding incident of resuscitation performed in Queensland during the season.

On this occasion medals were presented to four members of Noosa for their organised, precise and successful application of resuscitation on a 13-month-old infant on Noosa's Main Beach. The members involved were Steve Freckelton, Peter Langbridge, Yolande Hass and Bryce Grandemange. It was just one of those times when everything went well.

“All involved had a job to do and everyone performed spot on,” Mr Freckelton said.

The medal is named in honor of Jack Dearlove, life-member of Australia’s National Council, life-member of Queensland and Mooloolaba, his home club. He also has the rare honor of having been named Grand Knight of Life Saving an International award of the highest order. One of his many achievements was, on a hot November day in 1961, when he volunteered to be one of the guinea pigs for trialing expired resuscitation.

Thus it is only appropriate that the award for outstanding incidents of resuscitation should be named after this great clubby.

It is good to see people in emergency services being recognised for their hard work and dedication. Too often these people spend years, not only volunteering their service and skills but also when the situation demands, going in harm’s way.

However, happy to say last week Noosa patrol captain Carolyn Lansdown was awarded the National Medal. This comes as a result of her years of dedicated service to the Country Fire Authority and SES, in Victoria.

Add to this her years in the life saving movement at Noosa Heads and you have a remarkable total of some 25 years of service to the communities in which she has lived; so on behalf of our community, congratulations to Carolyn Lansdown National Medal.

Fighters struggle to make an international impact

By Ron Lane FOR the members of the Australian Amateur Boxing fraternity, one of the biggest tournaments on the calendar year will take place this month.

Starting on Wednesday the 24 August and finishing on Saturday 27 August, the tournament will be for the Australian Golden Gloves.

With the Commonwealth Games fast approaching fighters from both our local clubs, Israel Kani from Noosa Box Office (NBO) Noosaville and Mark Owens from Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, will be keen to compete in as many tournaments as possible.

Despite being some four years away, the Tokyo Olympics are also definitely a big part of the future plans for some of these fighters.

However, in the immediate future there is a big international tournament to be contested in Ireland and

Australia has been invited to compete.

This, however, creates a problem.

With Australia being so far away from Ireland and European tournaments, the cost of getting our representative in to these rings can be huge.

However, without international competition a lot of our fighters will never reach their full potential and, worst of all, our lack of medals on the Olympic stage will continue.

For these titles the Impact club will be represented by a team of 11 fighters and NBO will have a team of seven.

Following a very successful entry into the Wide Bay Championships, which saw the Impact club enter seven fighters and come home seven titles, preparation for the Golden Gloves has been good.

Teachers are very happy with the students’ attitude to the classes. The fact that it is in the fourth year speaks for itself.

This Saturday the NBO will host an open gym sparring session starting at 9am with clubs from neighbouring districts such as Deception Bay and Brisbane visiting.

“This will give all fighters the opportunity to get good quality sparring which is essential for those wishing to be in peak condition for the Golden Gloves,” said coach Kani.

Last year in mid-June, a similar event was held at the NBO and was a great success with teams coming from all over the state.

The sessions will be open to the public, so to any boxing fans interested in watching a morning of top sparring the NBO gym will be the place to go. Admission is free.

Noosa River is still the one

By Jack Mangrove IT’S hard not to be surprised with the amount of quality fish caught throughout the Noosa River each week.

Bream and whiting have been on the bite during the incoming tide along the Dog Beach and Frying Pan sand flats. Small Surface walkers have accounted for more than their fair share of fish lately with keen anglers outing in the time to get the results.

With quality trevally coming through the Woods Bays and back of sound, live baits such as herring and river prawns are worth their weight it gold and have been accounting for some seriously big fish.

Flathead have been active in the upper reaches of Weyba Creek - with drifted whitebait being their undoing.

Noosa’s north shore has been fishing a little hot and cold for tailor as of late, with reports of the odd big greenback (to 4.5kg) being caught. Try spending a good amount of time searching

for the better looking gutters before wetting a line.

Whiting, bream and dart are also reported to be present around the front of the Teewah Camp Grounds.

Fresh pipis and beachworms rigged on light line is the best way to get quality fish.

The winds has picked up lately along with the swell which means that anglers have to keep a keen eye on any window of opportunity at a chance of heading out.

Lately there have been some standout snapper taken on the in-close reefs like Little Halls and Jew Shoal along with the middle reefs like North Reef and Chardons Reef. Floated pillies along with lightly weighted soft plastics have been the key in getting a good size “knobby” to the boat.
