$36,000 donation

By Monique Kuzeff MONEY raised locally stays local when it comes to the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group (BOCAG) who were thrilled to present the Border Medical Oncology Research Unit (BMORU) with their first instalment of over $36,000 accumulated in the Kelsey Watts Memorial Ovarian Cancer Research Grant.

The BOCAG thanked community groups who contributed donations in to the grant including Kelly Country Albury HOG’s Ladies of Harley ($2300), St Pats FC ($5000), and Wodonga Bulldogs FC ($2500).

Upon its establishment in 2012, BOCAG aimed to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and committed to funding cancer trials run by BMORU for the next three years, which would be achieved through fund-raising efforts.

BMORU business manager Fiona Tuthill said the donation would enable the BMORU to employ a Senior Clinical Research Nurse for two days a week over the next three and a half years.

“Research nurses and staff are our major cost so for us it’s something we wouldn’t be able to do without this funding,” Ms Tuthill said.

“The research nurse will help us recruit patients for gynecological trials so we can continue to try and develop new treatments that could improve local cancer sufferers lives.

She said she hoped the grant would help raise BMORU’s profile and activity throughout the area.

“We want to make people more aware that there are opportunities here to participate in cancer trials and hopefully improve treatment in the long run.”

Once the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre opens its doors, Border Medical Oncology will be able to operate in a patient room, Ms Tuthill said.

contributing to this grant and that the money is staying local and making an impact on their lives.”

Wodonga Bulldogs FC spokesperson Robyn Groat said the club raised its contribution over two years at its annual Ladies Day held in May.

“We wanted to support something we knew had pretty nasty statistics and there wasn’t much focus on so we wanted to channel in and help BOCAG,” she said.

Kelly Country Albury HOGs Ladies of Harley raised their contribution through their inaugural ride while

St Pats FC raised its through various fund-raising events across three years.

The three community groups said they would continue to raise funds for the Kelsey Watts Memorial Ovarian Cancer Research Grant to assist BOCAG in funding BMORU ovarian cancer trials and research.

FIRST time candidate for the Albury Council election is accountant and registered tax agent Emily Lightfoot heading a team ticket of two with retired Airforce and civil aviation officer John Lindner as her second.

Both are members of the Albury Citizens and Ratepayers Movement and are standing up to represent the community.

“I think that the community has not been well represented on council in the past,” Ms Lightfoot said.

“We want to see more of the decisions made by council to be more reflective of the community.”

This team aims to enhance community involvement and communication with council to nourish the future growth of Albury.

It is opposed to a rate increase saying that the high cost of rates is a major concern in the community.

Financial accountability, waste collection, and hard waste collection are some of the other issues it is focusing on.

“We’ve hear from a lot of people that they are concerned about the level of capital expenditure on big projects and also the level of borrowing.”

CURRENT councillors Alice Glachan and Graham Docksey have joined forces once again and will be running a similar race to the one they ran in the previous local government election with three others on the ticket.

Cr Glachan has previously served as both mayor and deputy mayor for Albury and was first elected to council in 2004, while Cr Docksey was elected in 2012.

Economic and sustainable development and a “long-term” vision for the future of Albury is what this team has its sights set on and advocates a holistic and integrated approach to policy and management for Albury City.

The team emphasised its focus would be on ensuring the “goals and aspirations” of the community, as presented in the 2030 plan, were achieved.

“What we are about is ensuring Albury’s future by focusing on a long-term vision, ensuring financial and community accountability and sustainable development,” Cr Glachan said.

Those also on the team ticket are three local business owners Vicki Gray (also a Rotarian), Jennifer Mamouney (lessee of Albury Swim Centre for 26 years), and Ann Mitchell who has also previously been on Cr Glachan’s ticket.

FARRER Greens federal candidate Dr Amanda Cohn has put her hand up for local council as head of The Greens ticket in the upcoming local government election.

The 26-year-old doctor, who will be running a ticket of five candidates, feels optimistic after attracting 3728 votes in Albury and polled over 20 per cent at some booths in the Federal Election in July.

This team stands on a platform with priorities to improve public transport services, environmental sustainability and public health in planning and development decisions.

The team also wants to engage more with the community through consultation and collaboration using “modern technology”.

“I put my hand up to represent our community in Federal Parliament, and in doing so met local residents from all walks of life to hear their concerns,” Dr Cohn said.

“It makes sense to continue that work in local government.”

Second on the ticket is Geoffrey Hudson, an environmental engineer and training officer with Albury SES, with the remaining three being a drug and alcohol counsellor (Pattinson), retired social worker (Harbutt) and former Greens Federal candidate (Sobey).

ALBURY’S ALP councillor Darren Cameron will once again head the Labor ticket for the upcoming Albury Council election.

This team’s focus is on representing the “working families” as well as “balancing” council’s budget and “reducing” its debt.

It is strongly opposed to the construction of a $50 million aquatic facility at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre and believes the city should instead retain the existing Albury and Lavington pools and upgrade them when the city can “afford it”.

This team is also opposed to a rate increase above CPI saying it will support any requests for special rate variation.

It is committed to doing a review of the Cleanaway contract and the re-introduction of a weekly general waste collection and an annual hard waste service.

Cr Cameron has a background in international relations consulting and his ticket consists of trainee doctor Christian Kunde, businessman Rob Marion, and managers Carolyn Hassarati and Leanne Cameron. All candidates reside in either Glenroy or Lavington.

ALBURY City deputy mayor David Thurley, who joined council in 2012, is again standing as a candidate at the September council election.

Having moved to Albury in 1980, Mr Thurley worked extensively in the field of environmental planning and waste management and treatment and was director of his own consulting company specialising in environmental matters for many years prior to joining the council.

With much involvement in different areas of the community in roles including Community and Cultural Committee chairman, and a council representative in other various committees and groups, Cr Thurley believes his acquired insight into what is happening in the community makes him a suitable councillor for Albury.

He and his team of five will focus on a long-term vision for Albury while tackling imminent issues that the growing city faces and also maintaining aging infrastructure, such as the sewer system.

STANDING councillor Kevin Mack will be leading a team of five with local surgeon John Stuchbery second on the ticket.

Cr Mack, who has previously been mayor, said the last four years had seen the council present the community with many “opportunities” and he would like to follow on with that.

“It’s been a privilege being part of this wonderful city and I want to be able to complete projects that I’ve started,” Cr Mack said.

This team’s focus is around improving public transport and the Thurgoona corridor, reviewing the three bin system and securing more government funding for projects.

“We need to address the Thurgoona corridor in the next four years - we need to find a solution.

Cr Mack said he would like to see the Lavington pool retained but would like for an aquatic facility at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre to be considered in the future.

“We need to ensure we secure funding from the government for our major projects including the aquatic facility and continued development of the Lavington precinct,” he said.

The team ticket also consists of local businessman Murray King, standing councillor Ross Jackson, and local business owner Josh Cale.

ALBURYCITY mayor Henk van de Ven last week lodged an application for re-election as head of a team ticket of five candidates.

On top of having been a AlburyCity councillor for 12 years, deputy mayor for four years and now mayor, he has also ran his own business for over 30 years.

His team is diverse, formed of members who have served the local community in various areas including business, sport and charity.

They believe that Albury brings significant opportunity to grow and expand the region and wants a council who gets its facts and figures around all issues and is confident in good “decision-making”.

Sitting second on the ticket is Helen Spittal, a well-known businesswoman in the area, who has managed and owned a large freight distribution business for many years.

Other candidates include his wife Sue, who is Albury Harness Racing Club president and Howlong Golf Resort director, Chris Marting who is Corowa’s QAF quality inspector, and Jeff Hogan, a well-known “tireless worker for many organisations” including Albury Show Grounds Trust and UPA.

SPLITTERS Creek resident Bert Eastoe has stepped up to lead a ticket of five to represent the business community of Albury.

With over 40 years of experience in the business industry Mr Eastoe sets out to be a voice for the business community as does those on his ticket who have each had significant experience in the business community over many years also.

Mr Eastoe considered joining council because as someone who has contributed to the community he considered this move as a “formal approach” to ministering change and assisting the growth of the city.

For this team, the key focus is on attracting and retaining businesses in Albury.

“It’s important that we have stable and growing employment opportunities and that will be the main thrust of what we will advocate for,” Mr Eastoe said.

“It must be done in a sustainable way which will maintain the quality of life in this region.”

Second on the ticket is business manager Hayley Franks followed by Teresa Emery who is also a business manager, and retail employee Brad Franks and lawyer Peter Simpson.

STANDING alone as candidate for Albury City Council is Ruth Davys, chairperson of the regional Aboriginal governance committee.

She has over 16 years in social housing and community services and is former co-chair of the Murrumbidgee Circle of Influence group.

Having been a board member of Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service and parent representative on the Albury City Council Family Day Care committee, it is clear Ms Davys is passionate about areas of education and health.

But her main aim on council is to be a representative for the Aboriginal community.

She would like to see the council “harness Wiradjuri knowledge and ways of being” and using them within the broader community.

Ms Davys also would like to see more diverse representatives on council including young people, women and Aboriginal people saying it is currently “heavy with businessmen”.

“I want people to vote for me as an individual that’s why I’m standing alone.”

EAST Albury resident and health and welfare professional Gerard van Emmerik will run alone in the race for a seat on council.

Mr van Emmerik wants his community to be “better represented” saying that candidates should “independently” represent their voters rather than doing it the group “block approach”.

He has worked in the public sector for quite some time including local government and state government affairs.

While Mr van Emmerik said he was aware of the current issues affecting the local area, he does not stand on any particular platform saying its “important that every issue is addressed on its merit”.

“I want council to consider each issue with all of its information provided and with an understanding of the legislation that may impact on those decisions,” he said.

“The community’s views are paramount in decision making as well as facts, legislation and the requirements that council must abide by.”

Mr van Emmerik believes that council should leverage as much State and Federal funding as possible in order to reduce the amount of burden on ratepayers to fund key projects.

“If it’s not in the realm with council’s financial situation, we should definitely be lobbying for as much State and Federal funding as we can.”

New home for dog rescuers

Big win for bins

By Monique Kuzeff WODONGA Dog Rescue is excited to call its new shop front on Sangster Street its new home after opening the doors to the community last week.

It’s been four weeks setting up shop since the WDR received the keys to their new base after having to vacate the renovated Wodonga Pound facility after council decided to move the pound operations across the Border.

The new place is in a central location on the corner of Sangster and Kelly streets, convenient for anyone interested and willing to adopt or foster an animal to come and chat with volunteers and get any queries answered.

The shop front also stocks and sells all sorts of products from cat and dog toys and leads, to knitted blankets, beds, balls and jewellery.

WDR volunteer Joanne Jones said the change had been good for the not-forprofit organisation which was now able to run its own show without restrictions and limitations imposed on them.

“We can be here anytime of the day if we want to be,” Ms Jones said.

“Prior to coming here, we had restrictions with council, so in hindsight it's great where we’ve ended up.”

She said the “one-stop-shop” was great as it enabled the volunteers to store equipment and donated goods at the one location rather than at different households of volunteers.

“One of the best things about being here is that everything is now in the one spot instead of having the trailer at my place with some of the stuff on it and other things at another carer's place,” she said.

Ms Jones said they had received a large amount of donations since moving in to the shop.

“Donations have really picked up again - initially a lot of people thought we weren’t operating anymore after we

The only disadvantage of the new building is that it is unable to house rescued animals.

“There’s no room or area where we can house the dogs and cats here so we are relying 100 per cent on our foster carers.

“But we are going to build a dog run along the green strip at the front so the community will be able to come in and meet some of the dogs during the day.”

SINCE the three-bin system was implemented in Wodonga a bit over a year ago, 475 truckloads worth of waste has not gone to landfill.

A recent report put together by Wodonga’s Business Services director Trevor Ierino shows a 44 per cent reduction in waste to landfill over 12 months.

That’s a 3465 tonne reduction in waste to landfill, having gone from 7896 tonnes to 4431 tonnes.

While previously the industry’s best bin contamination rate sat at 2 per cent, the new data shows that the number of contaminated bins fell to 1.14 percent.

“The willingness to actually abide by the conditions of what we put in our bins is evident in just 1.14 per cent of contamination rates,” Cr Rodney Wangman said at council meeting on Monday night.

He said the year had shown a “90-plus” success rate in either reclaim, re-use or recycle.

“That’s pretty remarkable from where we started, some 10 years ago, in my recollection at about 50 per cent and in those days we used to have a tip in Wodonga,” he said.

“This is the green and clean construct of our community - it is the single biggest contract that actually has that impact for our community.”

Cr John Watson acknowledged

the effort of the waste management group and outcome of the education program put in place.

“I’m really pleased to see the education program, put in place with our waste management group, is educating our primary schools, our secondary schools on waste management and resources,” Cr Watson said.

“A really important thing to remember is in the old days we just had the one tin can, so we have come a long way and we’ve got a long way to go.”

Mayor Anna Speedie also acknowledged the education program, saying that educating the community and schools on the three-bin system is key to success.

“I think the schools are to be congratulated on some of the initiatives that they have taken up themselves, “Trashless Tuesdays and Waste Wise Wednesdays creating names to get the kids engaged.”

Bin upsize requests was less than two per cent for both the red lidded and recycling bins, according to the report.

Cr Speedie noted that the commercial food organic waste collection was the “next big ticket item” that needed to be looked at.

Local commercial food organic waste collection is yet to be approached, however there has been smaller trial undertaken locally to determine any issues that could arise from it.

The search for Cameron

By Monique Kuzeff A WODONGA man has been reported missing after being last seen leaving his home address on Lawrence Street in a new white Holden Cruze on Friday 13 August at about 12 noon.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate the 31-year-old male, Cameron Kemshal-Bell.

Cameron’s family consider the disappearance to be out of character and hold concerns for his welfare, as he suffers from a medical condition.

He is described as being average in build, Caucasian in appearance, about 170cm tall, with straight brown/blonde hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark long pants,

grey beanie with wolf ears and black work boots.

New South Wales police located Cameron’s car yesterday at about 1.8 kilometres east of Kerr Road, Thurgoona.

Police have released a photo of Cameron and are urging the community to contact Wodonga Police Station on (02) 6049 2600 if they see him.

THIRTY new G-Wagon 4WD Ultra-Light tankers will be delivered to northeast Victoria in the coming months to boost the capacity of Forest Fire Management Victoria staff to protect local communities from bush fires.

The new wagons are being delivered to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) depots across the region including Bright, Corryong, Mitta Mitta, Mansfield and Marysville.

Shaun Lawlor, DEWLP’s regional manager forest and fire operations for Hume, said Alexandra and Broadford depots received 14 vehicles in March 2015 to which have already proved their worth during the autumn

planned burning season.

“The Ultra-Light tanker has several safety and efficiency features specifically designed for forest firefighting and planned burning needs,” Mr Lawlor said.

“These tankers have a 630-litre water carrying capacity, much bigger than the 400-litre capacity of older vehicles, which means our Forest Fire Management firefighters are able to stay longer on the fire-ground.”

He said the body of the wagons have been “ergonomically” designed to accommodate people of all sizes.

“We have also added electronic rewind to the hose reels, and repositioned heavy items so they’re lower and

more accessible,” he said.

“These tankers have a falling object protection structure (FOPS) above the cabin to help better protect our crews from falling trees and branches.

“Victoria is the first state to have implemented this level of falling object protection in its firefighting vehicles.”

The rollout of more than 300 wagons across Victoria is based on hazardous tree risk in each location and their area’s typography for bushfire response.

The Mercedes-Benz GProfessional 4WDs were chosen for the Ultra-Light firefighting fleet through an open, competitive tender process to deliver the most costeffective solution.

Fewer jabs for diabetes

By Monique Kuzeff AUSTRALIANS living with type two diabetes will only have to inject themselves once a week, rather than twice a day after the Turnbull Government’s investment in subsidising a further $70 million round of ground-breaking medicines.

Over 20,000 people will find it easier and cheaper to manage their condition now with the new medicines

listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Included on the list are revolutionary diabetes treatment Exanatide (Bydureon) and a round of new medicines such as Bevacizumab (Avastin) that will help save the lives of women with advanced cervical cancer.

Health Minister Sussan Ley said the new diabetes treatments were all expected to be cost neutral as they were an alternative to existing treatments.

Ms Ley said Australians living with type two diabetes would avoid up to 13 injections per week and would save over $1600 per year.

“As one of our most prominent chronic diseases, type two diabetes is placing a significant cost on the nation’s health and finances at nearly $1 billion per year,” Ms Ley said.

“Subsidising innovative medicines like these makes it easier for thousands of patients to keep on top of their dia-

How to keep pace with housing demand?

By Monique Kuzeff AS one of the fastest-growing regional cities in Victoria, Wodonga is expected to reach a population of 50,000 by 2033.

As Wodonga’s housing development sector expands at a rapid pace, with not only traditional buyers but also non-traditional buyers, including single people, single parent families and retirees, seeking suitable and affordable housing, Wodonga Council is focusing on a “housing strategy”.

A Housing Forum, which was delivered by Wodonga Council on Wednesday, looked at housing stock and diversity in Wodonga.

Strategic planners from Wodonga Council, real estate agents, emergency housing staff, housing service system staff, developers and financial services staff were among those who attended the forum, which followed one held in May. After the first forum, Wodonga Council partnered with Deakin University to develop a “housing system map”, a visual representation of the in-

terplay between factors such as housing affordability and development. The map assisted in further developing the housing strategy for Wodonga.

Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie said Wodonga’s “complex housing market” sees many buyers and renters “struggling” to afford suitable housing.

“To ensure we have the appropriate housing stock, it’s absolutely crucial that we work closely with the Rural Housing Network and other support agencies,” Cr Speedie said.

“It starts the conversation to consider the housing stock and our demographic and make sure it’s being delivered appropriately in Wodonga.

Cr Speedie said poor housing affordability and homelessness was a major and increasing concern in Wodonga.

“The figures for Wodonga alone show that in 2011, there were 364 people who were without a home.

“We will continue to work with partnering bodies to ensure we have the right stock at the right time for the right people.”

Tesla provides clean energy THE world currently consumes 20 trillion kWh of energy annually.

Enough energy to power a single family home for 1.8 billion years or supply energy to a nuclear power plant for 2300 years (or launch the Falcon 9 rocket 17 million times).

CHARLES Sturt University is Australia’s first university to be certified as carbon neutral under the government’s Carbon Neutral Program.

The Carbon Neutral Program is a voluntary scheme which allows businesses and other organisations, products and services, to be certified as carbon neutral against the National Carbon Offset Standard.

The standard provides a benchmark for organisations seeking to see their net greenhouse gas emissions equal zero.

Charles Sturt University has achieved this certification and

increased its energy efficiency through a range of measures, including installing more efficient lighting, upgrading airconditioners, and generating more energy on its campuses by installing solar energy systems.

Businesses and communities are becoming increasingly interested in demonstrating their leadership in moving towards a low carbon economy, and in turn playing their part in reducing Australia’s emissions.

It’s hard to think of a film in which women take the limelight, and mere males are left like totally marginalised dude, more than they are in this one.

And it’s an enjoyable ride, with some good dirty laughs along the way.

It’s a vibrant music scene ALBURY-WODONGA region has been fortunate enough to benefit from many quality concerts from all around the world, and the local live music scene is now as vibrant as we have had.

One of the outstanding concerts for many years was recently Albury’s own Northern Folk, playing to almost a full house in the Albury Entertainment centre.

The 11-piece Indie Folk group played original music from the past and a soon to be released album.

The proceeds of the evening assisted the district's homeless, a further acclaim to the Northern Folk’s spirit towards the local community. Follow this group - a huge future awaits if the right opportunities present themselves.

Also on the local front, the Ideas of North, a world acclaimed acapella singing group performed and provided a singing lesson in acapella choir to 90-odd singers last year, who later in the evening presented a fine rendition of Sting's song, Fragile.

A new return concert has been arranged and thanks to the Murray Conservatorium, in ad-

dition to last year have provided subsidised tickets for a limited number students at the training session and concert.

It will be held on 16 September, with the funds raised going to the Wewack Special Schools music program. A world-class performance highlighted by local talent. The show just past represented all styles of high-end hi-fi equipment, with each of the companies focused on performance first, the demonstrations were the key to this show's success.

Overall the show was the best attended hi-fi show to date, with stereo systems up to

$300,000 on display and along with a multitude of turntables, amplifiers and speakers no audiophile would have left disappointed.

The message was clear that quality audio equipment still has its place, and judging by the number of new entrants in this section, true hi-fi is alive and well.

The second show is from the UK-based Chester Group and it will be held in October - this show will focus on many of the more highly visible audio equipment brands.

Hi-fi shows are now attracting a new market - many of those curious about higher resolution music and combining streaming with other devices in the home or just seeking a understanding, or clarity after discovering the musical restrictions most theatre systems have when it comes to handling the full range of music.

WHILE home to some of the state’s most affordable locations, a number of towns in regional Victoria have median house prices to rival their city counterparts.

In the year to June 30, the everpopular Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula recorded the highest median house price in regional Victoria, at $835,000 - significantly higher than the metropolitan Melbourne median of $725,000.

With a median house price of $780,000, the Ballarat suburb of Lake Wendouree also outperformed the state’s capital. The suburb has experienced significant price growth of more than 25 per cent over the year.

High median house prices were also recorded in a number of coastal towns within commuting distance of Melbourne.

Growth in these areas indicates continuing buyer demand for locations which offer space, lifestyle and infrastructure with access to quality amenities.

In the 12 months to June 30, Lorne on the Great Ocean Road was also popular with buyers, recording

Nearby Jan Juc was another strong performer, with a median house price of $615,000.

House prices in regional Victoria’s largest city, Geelong, have also increased significantly over the year, pushing the median house price to a record high $668,000.

Riders gear up for spring classic

By Paul Ingwersen THE sky is light at 6.30am, birds are chirping, there is a westerly breeze, the sun draws a slight sweat and you hear that crack of magpie wings, and feel the bump on your helmet from yet another bombing bird.

Spring is here and with it comes the second half of the cycling season as we transition to some regional spring classics and mostly scratch races where riders race solely against equally graded cyclists, for victory, unlike the handicaps in the first half of the season which pit riders of all abilities against each other.

The first event will be the local King Valley Sam Miranda Winery Strade Nero race. A true classic event that will see the best domestic cyclists compete on the roads around Oxley, Whitfield and Wangaratta as the National Road Series (NRS) reconvenes.

In addition, the weekend offers a timed participation event for riders of all abilities, plus the hotly contested Victorian Road Series and masters’ grades, which all bring the chance of standing on the podium at the winery and taking a celebratory drink of some of the finest Snow Road wines.

The race is modelled on the Italian Strade Bianche and both races have been elevated in status with the Italian classic entering the World Tour in 2017, while the local event, was moved up to NRS status in 2015. The difference between Nero and Bianche is black and white. Both races are classics with dirt sections, designed to test riders’ skill, strength, bike handling and tactical nous. The Italian race,

While in Oxley and the King Valley we can get an Italian experience with the myriad of wineries producing Sangiovese, Barbera or other Italian blends, plus platters of gourmet antipasto, the Australian race covers three sections of dirt for 12.4 km in total.

The longest of these is 5km, climbing almost 300m over course black gravel in the mountains above Whitfield.

Many races with such a tough climb would exclude the bigger, stronger riders, and preference those barely nudg-

ing 60kg and with a strong power to weight ratio.

The Strade Nero however, still provides another 60km from the KoM point to the finish, with the third section of dirt introduced by the organisers this year around Cheshunt. All cyclists know that the light guys go well uphill, but can struggle on the downhill, flat and in the wind.

The course creates the challenge for the hill climbers to keep their gap to the finish, and for the big legged drivers to bury themselves in team time trial mode, to catch back onto the bunch.

For those with enough left in the legs the final run in is an opportunity to attack and again try and drop the lighter

More often than not, enough of the stronger riders regroup with the front of the race, and there is a medium sized bunch sprint into the Sam Miranda winery carpark. If, however there is an early breakaway, or a committed bunch working after the climb, expect a small group sprint. The patience and often 15-20km the chasers need to latch back onto the front group of the race can elude them.

The men’s NRS will finish around 10.50am on Saturday, and the women’s around 4.15pm. Sunday sees the Sam

Miranda classic covering the Warby ranges over both Taminick and Ryan’s Gap, with the women crossing the line at Sam Miranda around 11.55am and the men at 2.30pm.

It’s do or die time

By Ovens And Murray Football FIVE teams will take their 2016 curtain call this weekend in the Ovens and Murray Football League.

But which five teams will say so long farewell it’s been good to know you at the end of the home and away rounds?

Corowa, North Albury and Wangaratta Rovers are definite non finalists but Wodonga, Wangaratta and Wodonga Raiders are all genuine chances to fill fifth position.

There were a couple of real cliff hangers in round 17, Raiders may live to kick themselves after holding a commanding lead most of the day but their guard dropped in the final couple of minutes as Myrtleford came from

the clouds to win by a solitary point with an after the siren goal from Jarrod Hayse.

Scenes reminiscent of a Grand Final victory ensued as jubilant Saint Supporters invaded the Birralee oval to celebrate one of their sweetest victories.

What a finish as the young Saints stood tall to claim the win. Lavington Oval was the scene for another cliffhanger as the home team came from five plus goals down to fall agonisingly close to their Yarrawonga opposition, but at the end of the day they were five points shy of the Pigeons. Wodonga kept their hopes of continued season action when they flogged the hapless Hoppers by some 70 points.

Albury dismembered the Rovers with a 30 goal display with O’Halpin and Mellington each returning six goals apiece.

Raiders with a reality check from last week to contemplate and the real possibility they may be looking for the latest in mothball protection for their sweaters should results not go according to their plan.

The Hoppers haven’t been on the winner’s podium for a long long timeRound 10 in fact and the stakes are too high for Raiders to drop this one.

Yarrawonga will be at home to undefeated Albury Tigers and would love nothing better than to go to the Qualifying final with a morale boosting win over their nemesis of recent years, but ...... Tigers to get the points (not that they need them).

Wang Rovers will draw their curtain on 2016 at the City Oval with a visit from the Panthers who will look to find form pre finals engagement and should get away with the four points and maybe reclaim second position.

John Flower Oval will be the nerve centre of the League on Saturday when they play host to the Wangaratta Magpies who have been good when they are good and ordinary sometimes when they shouldn’t.

The Dogs could do their cross town rivals a huge favour and relegate the Magpies to the Moth Ball hunt.

A fine day could see Maggies swoop but with precipitation predicted the home town Dogs can finish their season on a high. The more consistent Bulldogs to win at home.

Great result for Falcons

By Tania Phillips FALCONS kept their Albury Wodonga Women’s Hockey League finals hopes alive with a victory over Wombats in the third-last round of the regular season.

The Falcons ran out winners 5-2 while Wodonga defeated Magpies 3-1 and Norths beat CR United 4-0.

Just two rounds remain with Falcons taking on Magpies next week in the early game, North playing Wodonga and Wombats facing CR United.
