MOUNT Evelyn is more connected than ever thanks to the completion of a new footpath connecting Evelyn Ridge to the main town.

Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy and residents from the Evelyn Ridge Retirement Village officially opened the footpath on Friday 12 August.

The new path stretches the length of

Clegg Road, starting at Evelyn Ridge, and meets existing footpaths along Monbulk Road.

At a cost of $200,000, the footpath is considered priceless by the residents of Evelyn Ridge and others who live along Clegg Road.

Gerald Overton is a resident at Evelyn Ridge and says the footpath has made a big difference in how residents interact with the wider community.

Commemorating Vietnam

By Jesse Graham RESIDENTS from around the Yarra Ranges and beyond gathered at the Knox War Memorial to pay their respects to fallen soldiers over the weekend, marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. On Sunday, 14 August, RSL representatives, MPs and residents gathered at the memorial in the Tim Neville Arboretum in Ferntree Gully for the Yarra Valley and Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Day. Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (OEMVVAA) president Aff Binnoore introduced the day’s speakers, Casey MP Tony Smith and Knox School Year 12 student Nathan Reed.

Nathan said the group had gathered to honour the Australian soldiers who served during the Vietnam War, especially during the Battle of Long Tan, which took place on 18 August, 1966.

“Thinking of the brave individuals who join us here today and those who are here only in spirit, one can’t help but feel awed by the enormity of what we encounter,” Mr Reed said.

“We find ourselves in the midst of patriots and the family and friends of those who have nobly served.

“Standing on the shoulders of giants, who have given us so much, we remember those who have sacrificed so much for their country.”

He spoke about the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Long Tan, where 108 Australian soldiers fought about 2000 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers in a rubber plantation.

Despite being outnumbered, the Australian troops’ fighting led the Vietnamese forces to retreat.

“Your presence here today and that of the people gathering across the country is a tribute to those troops and to their families,” Nathan said.

“It is a way to say we remember - to those soldiers who shivered, crouching in the rubber plantation at Long Tan, we remember and honour you.”

Feedback on planning scheme

By Victoria Stone-meadows YARRA Ranges Council is seeking public feedback on a proposed amendment to the shire’s planning scheme.

Amendment C148 went up for public viewing and submissions on Thursday 11 August, and will be available for viewing until Thursday 6 October.

The proposed amendment aims to update and modify the existing planning scheme for Yarra Ranges Shire to cover provisions the current scheme doesn’t.

“Replacing current obscure controls with planning overlays which makes it much clearer for landowners and prospective purchasers of land

for the removal of vegetation will be clear because the controls will be shown as planning overlays instead of other controls that are not always apparent to land owners or prospective purchasers,” he said.

Cr Callanan said all submissions received about the amendment would receive careful consideration before the amendment was voted on.

CFA plays a vital role in local communities THE CFA is one of the driving forces of our local communities.

We rely on the volunteers to assist us in our time of need.

In the Dandenong Ranges, we are lucky to have so many active brigades who respond 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Add to this mix across the Dandenong Ranges, we have the SES. The Emerald SES is one of the busiest units in Victoria.

With the current weather patterns, they will most likely get busier.

The support for the CFA and SES has always enjoyed bipartisan support; the construction of new stations and arrival of new trucks is important to ensure the communities in the Ranges are protected.

How long does the Emerald community have to wait?

The current building is not only inadequate but unsafe, failing to meet current occupational health and safety conditions.

The volunteers deserve better and it is time the Victorian Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, announces they will deliver the funding for this infrastructure in the next State Budget.

Briefly Man charged with trafficking ice A MONBULK man faces trafficking and weapons charges after being caught with a “significant” amount of ice and a handgun in town over the weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the 26-yearold man was arrested by Monbulk police in the early hours of Sunday morning after being found in possession of a handgun and more than 100 grams of methamphetamine (ICE).

Det Sgt Smithwick said the man had a “significant amount” of the drug, and was charged with trafficking ice and possession of a handgun.

The gun was not registered.

The man will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 17 August.

POLICE are seeking information about the whereabouts of Dean Baldry, who is known to frequent the Yarra Ranges area.

Baldry is 26 years of age, with green eyes and brown hair.

Mooroolbark break-in spree DETECTIVES are asking residents to report suspicious behaviour, after a trio of break-ins around the Mooroolbark area over the weekend.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Senior Constable Chris Moloney said that three breakins occurred between 9am and midnight on Saturday, 13 August, around the Mooroolbark area.

The first break-in occurred in Hayrick Lane, where jewellery and a mobile phone were stolen from a residential property. Shortly afterwards, a coin collection, jewellery and a computer were stolen from a Partridge Way property, before a break-in at another property on the street.

POLICE are on the hunt for a car thief, who made off with a $25,000 V8 from an Olinda property over the weekend.

In the early hours of Saturday, 13 August, a black Holden Calais was stolen from an unlocked garage in Monash Avenue, Olinda.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the car was worth about $25,000.

Chainsaws stolen from shed CHAINSAWS have been stolen from a Ferny Creek shed last week, and police are appealing for help to catch the burglar.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between Sunday 7 and Tuesday 9 August, chainsaws were stolen from an unlocked shed on School Road in Ferny Creek.

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges residents are now allowed to landscape their nature strips, within reason, with the council accepting a new Nature Strip and Roadside Guideline on Tuesday 9 August.

Councillors unanimously voted to adopt the new guideline at the meeting, after Chirnside Ward councillor Andy Witlox put forward a slight amendment to the document.

The guideline, he said, would give residents certainty about how they were able to landscape their nature strip with plants and rocks, with community feedback helping to shape the document.

“There’s a lot of good stuff in here around, basically, being able to plant on the nature strip – we’ve had a lot of feedback from the community saying this will be a great idea, so this will allow that,” he said.

“Yes, we’ve had some issues around letterboxes, wanting to not be the middle-man and dictate what a letterbox should look like – as long as it doesn’t pose a risk to pedestrians, cars coming in or out of driveways or coming down the street.”

The review to the guideline took place last year, after a Kalorama resident was forced to remove very large rocks from his nature strip in 2014.

The resident spoke to the Mail and said there was “no consistency” in how nature strip by-laws were enforced.

Under the new guidelines, the rocks would still not be permitted.

Plea for driver education

By PETER DOUGLAS ONE of the Dandenong Ranges’ most important driver safety initiatives is under threat due to a lack of interest.

Participant complacency on the Anthony and Travis Hall Driver Education Memorial Fund is threatening its long-term viability, with a lack of applications sparking a call for support from the fund’s dedicated committee of management.

Since starting 21 years ago, the fund, in partnership with Murcotts Driving Excellence, has helped to spread an important message to young drivers in the Dandenong Ranges, through offering recipients the chance to participate in a Level One Defensive Driving Course valued at $295.

But, despite committee members working diligently on the fund, it has been in decline for some years.

Fund convenor, Peter Marke, said they would fight to keep the initiative active within the Dandenong Ranges communities.

“We’ll keep this going, which means so much to the community and to those involved, but it’s really disappointing to see the lack of interest,” he said.

“It was very, very popular when it first started.

“Take the time to fill out an application – we know younger people are busier than ever before with academic and social pursuits, but the benefits should be obvious.”

Mr Marke said the fund was too important to ignore.

“I’ve been working with the fund since day one,” he said.

“On many occasions, drivers in the Dandenong Ranges have learnt skills which have helped them out of danger.

“It’s proven how much these courses have helped our youth.”

The teenagers, aged 15 and 13 respectively, died on 4 January, 1995.

They had accepted a lift to a milk bar from a friend, who failed to negotiate a bend and crashed into a tree.

Anthony and Travis were the sons

of the then senior Upwey Fire Brigade’s First Lieutenant Peter Hall and wife, Liz. Both were Upwey Junior Fire Brigade members, with Anthony being the Junior Captain when the accident occurred.

Peter Hall told the ‘Mail’ last year that he continued to mark the anniversary of the crash each year, when he visited the crash site to lay flowers.

“It’s the only time I ever go near there,” he said.

He said one of the silver linings of the boys’ death was the fund.

Applications for this year’s program close on Friday, 26 August.

To be eligible, applicants must be over 18 years of age, own their vehicle and reside in the Dandenong Ranges.

Letters In the dead of night I WAS pleased to read in your newspaper that council replaced the contentious bus shelter at 6am, so as to avoid impacting commuters, patrons and the morning peak traffic.

I would be horrified to think that it might have been done at that time so as to avoid any protest by the 150 mildmannered ‘Emeraldites’ who signed a petition opposing the bus shelter replacement.

I didn’t sign the petition myself, being more interested in democracy than bus shelters.

The democratic lesson I learned from the whole thing, however, was that ‘you can’t fight City Hall’.

MY DAUGHTER has brought to my attention an article by Peter Brennan on the villages of the Dandenongs that confirms much of my own experience of this once lovely area.

As a child, my family often visited the Dandenongs for the beautiful gardens, walks, scenery and picnics.

When I had my own family, we did the same and that became a tradition, with my daughters taking me to the Dandenongs for Mother’s Day and my birthday in October.

Nearly 10 years ago, we stopped going and Peter Brennan’s article clarified for me the reasons why.

The residents of the villages have been let down by the Shire of Yarra Ranges, the State Government and the Federal Government.

The article is absolutely correct: the public facilities are not maintained, and the once-beautiful gardens, buildings and autumn trees have been removed or allowed to fall into disrepair.

He points out how close the Dandenongs are to the city, yet there is a lack of sewage services.

The reliance – of so many – on tank water, grey water flowing into the street; and they do not even have dependable

power or technology services.

He is correct in suggesting that this sounds more like a third world than a first world community.

Peter Brennan and his band of volunteers deserve a medal for what they are trying to do in the Dandenongs.

But it is clear that with all levels of government failing to support them, and the shire’s economic strategy so clearly targeted against the beautiful little villages of the Dandenongs, they are fighting a losing battle.

I will take his advice and visit the Dandenongs again this spring.

If only to reflect on what once was and what could be.

If only there were more voices of clarity and vision in public office.

CFA ‘right-wing’ I HAVE been a CFA volunteer for the last 45 years.

In general, with a few notable exceptions, I have found the volunteer leaders of the CFA extremely right-wing in their politics (some even to the right of Genghis Khan).

The hierarchy of the volunteers loathes unions and the Labor Party, and never miss an opportunity to stick the boot in.

A union exists to look after the affairs of its members and has an executive that is voted in (or out) by its members, depending on how good a job it is doing.

Although I strongly disagree with some of the attitudes to volunteers exhibited by the United Fire-fighters Union, it presumably is meeting its members’ wishes.

As with the UFU, the volunteers have a union, but they call it an association.

It exists for exactly the same reasons as the UFU; but unlike the UFU has four statutory positions on the CFA Board.

I suspect that 99 per cent of the volunteers who are causing a ruckus at the moment have not bothered to read the draft EBA which is being negotiated.

I have read it and cannot find in it anywhere where the UFU is able to veto or

control the decisions of the CFA. Can anyone indicate where these provisions exist please?

What’s it about?

WELL I am wondering what the last three months have been about, politically? Eight weeks. Weeks we were subjected to such boredom. And what has it achieved for Malcolm Turnbull? A one seat majority. And he is still the prisoner of the right-wing factions back to where he started. Yet to hear the Coalition talk, they have a mandate. The campaign was too long; by the time it finished, I had almost lost the will to live (just joking).

On the other side of politics, well, we had Bill in his big bus and he looked as if he was enjoying himself. They were disciplined. They fought a good fight. The pundits said it would be tight, and it was on election night. As is usual for me, I watched the count. Within the first hour, three Liberal MPs were gone in Tasmania. Seven hours later, there was no clear winner. The Wentworth Hotel, where the Liberals gather for celebrations, well the room was nearly empty. I think the Howards were there, and perhaps their dog.

In came Malcolm, ‘it was Labor’s fault with the Medicare scare’ – they had lied.

Fancy that, a politician lying. The reason you gave was to sort out the pesky trade unions, but the ABCC was never mentioned, neither was same-sex marriage.

You blindsided retirees on their superannuation. On and on.

I sincerely hope that you keep your word, concerning the CFA and their fight with the Labor Party. You used these wonderful people as a political football – shame on you, they deserved better – just to get a couple of rural MPs over the line, and you did. I hope you have been in touch with the Fair Work Tribunal. I, for one, thank the fireys for everything they do for us all. So not a triumph for Malcolm, or the party. Pray tell me, what was it all about?

Long walk towards hope

By PETER DOUGLAS THREE Dandenong Ranges friends and avid walkers are preparing to undertake an epic Spanish pilgrimage, while aiming to raise awareness about the impacts of mental illness.

Cheryl McInnes of Belgrave, Kym Murphy of Kalorama, and Tony Whyte of Monbulk will later this month join walkers from over the world taking part in the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, an 884-kilometre journey from the French Pyrenees to the northwest of Spain.

Teaming up with Wellways Australia, a not-for-profit mental health and disability support organisation, the trio will undertake the journey for the ‘1 Million Steps for Mental Health’ event.

For the trio, the desire to walk the Camino again is about promoting a better understanding of mental illness.

Ms McInnes said the trio felt extremely motivated to complete the journey.

“We each know, from personal experience in our own family, about the impacts of mental illness,” she said.

“We also know what a difference the right kinds of support can make.”

Ms McInness has two adult sons, one of whom has a mental illness.

“I am grateful for the quality of life he has, and for the intelligent and beautiful human being that he is,” she said.

“I’ve learned so much about the serious stigma that exists in the broader community around mental illness, based on a lack of understanding.”

Ms Murphy, a mother of four who completed her first Camino in 2014, has a background in the community health sector and as an alcohol and drug counsellor in a maximum security prison.

“When I worked as a prison counsellor, I was surprised at the number of

“Sadly, the stigma associated with mental illness is enough to prevent people from sharing their plight.

“And often it’s too late that all is revealed.

“With the longing to walk the Camino again, came the desire to do it for something bigger than me, something that would benefit the global community.

“We’re ready to walk and make that happen.”

Meanwhile, Tony met Cheryl and Kym on the Camino in 2014, when they were each embarking on their first one.

They became good friends, having a common love of the Dandenong Ranges.

“We hope our Camino experience will inspire and help others understand mental health issues,” he said.

Tony will also use the time on his journey to reflect on a personal loss,

the death of his eldest daughter in 2005.

“She had a mental illness which we believe was bipolar disorder, undiagnosed, as she refused medical help or medication,” he said.

“She had this condition for about 17 years until she died, which ultimately affected the whole family in various ways.”

Several friends, along with other pilgrims, will accompany the trio from late August to mid-October.

In honour of Caz

By Russell Bennett “IF YOU didn’t know Caz, picture someone else - a friend, an uncle, a nanna, an aunty. Someone you know has passed away from cancer. Draw on their determination and their fight today boys and make sure we do not give up. We do not f***ing lose this.”

Gembrook Cockatoo senior footy coach Matt O’Neil stood in the middle of the huddle before his players went out on to the ground on Saturday. Like the rest of them, he had a heavy heart but a glint in his eye. It was only a home-and-away game worth just four premiership points. Except it wasn’t.

Saturday represented so much more than that ... it was for Caz. Carolyn Goodie, or ‘Caz’ as she was known by most, was the sort of person who makes sporting clubs tick and its people gravitate towards her.

When she lost her battle with melanoma last June at just 45, the impact was felt throughout the local community. While her husband Steve was the long-time figurehead or front man of the Brookers, Caz was doing all the tireless work behind the scenes to keep the club moving and did so until just a few short months before she lost her battle - leaving behind Steve and teenage daughters Alex and Chloe.

On Saturday at Gembrook, AFL Yarra Ranges marked its first ‘Carolyn Goodie Melanoma Cancer Awareness Round’ in her honour.

The Brookers hosted Alexandra in the footy and netball fixtures, with the home sides donning yellow armbands and the visitors blue - the colours synonymous with the Melanoma Institute.

Steve and the Brookers hosted a function in the clubrooms in the leadup to the senior game. It was understated, but its message hit home. Just the way Caz would have liked it.

Representatives from both sides of state politics joined local businesspeople and representatives from both Alexandra and AFL Yarra Ranges to hear from Steve and Dr Phil Parente Carolyn’s oncologist and the director of cancer services at Eastern Health.

“This is just the start of trying to get the awareness out there,” Steve said.

“The idea was probably to run the round for two or three years through AFL Yarra Ranges but talking to the experts, I think they’d love to make it bigger.

“The footy and netball at a local level is the exact age group we’re targeting - when you should be aware and checking your spots.

“It’s also the age group where, as you get to your late twenties or early thirties, you become parents and you’ve got kids to look after as well not just yourself. A lot of the damage is done at such an early age.

“It needs to be spoken about as much as we spoke about breast cancer, prostate cancer and testicular cancer 20 years ago - it needs to be a real topic of discussion.

“As more people get diagnosed with melanoma, it’ll start hitting closer to home.”

On Friday night, the ‘Carolyn Goodie Memorial Honour Board’ was unveiled at the club. Her name will be forever intertwined with the Brookers’ netballers.

“The support from AFL Yarra Ranges and the Gembrook Cockatoo footy and netball club, and from people I’ve just bumped into on the street has been amazing,” Steve said.

“I’ve spoken with people who have been affected and this needs to be done.

I could have easily not done it but there were a lot of people who pushed me along the way.”

Dr Parente congratulated Steve, Alex and Chloe for the courage they’d shown through a time of unbelievable sorrow.

“Steve and Carolyn were such an inspirational couple - the way they faced a terminal diagnosis with so much courage and dignity,” he said.

“Steve then turned his personal tragedy into a positive, and that took a lot of guts.

“We need a culture change. We know about slip, slop, slap but we need to move the momentum on. The culture change has to be that getting burnt

“If melanoma is caught early, there’s a 98 or 99 per cent cure rate and that’s unlike any other cancer. However, if it’s caught late the figures drop dramatically and if caught really late the chance of cure is only 15 or 20 per cent.”

On Saturday, Steve presented Dr Parente with a cheque for $7000 to go to Eastern Health for melanoma research. There’s also an online auction held by AFL Yarra Ranges that will run

until 21 August with all proceeds going to the cause.

Some incredible items are up for grabs including a signed Melbourne guernsey, a signed guernsey from Upwey favourite son and Adelaide gun Rory Sloane (who also recorded a special melanoma round video message), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti’s signed boots, and a 2016 signed (lithograph) Hawthorn guernsey.

As for the on-field action on Saturday - the footy gods were smiling. The Brookers won the senior clash by 14 points and the reserves by 30.

Getting it all together IT SEEMS like it was just weeks ago when the end of the financial year was closing in.

Now it’s here in earnest, which also means it’s tax time.

Here is a brief checklist of things to prepare for your accountant.

Lodging your tax return is easier when you have everything ready that you will need.

According to the Australian Tax Office, just begin with the basics of what you will need to prepare for your accountant.

For starters, you will need your tax file number, as well as your bank details (BSB and account number), so you can receive any refund owed.

If you have private health insurance, you will need your statement.

Please have prepared any details of your income and expenses; these could include details from payment summaries from employers, super funds, Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs statements from banks and financial institutions showing interest received.

Also, any details of foreign income received – receipts for gifts, donations and work-related expenses – or details of any child support payments made.

If you have a spouse, you will need details of their income and expenses to

complete the income test questions.

Investments If you have shares, units, managed funds or other investments, you will need details of dividend payments and distributions from managed funds, any investment gains or losses from the disposal of shares, units and rental properties.

Rental properties If you own a rental property, you will need details of rental income, earned interest charged on money you borrowed for the rental property; and other expenses relating to the property, including any expenditure on capital works.

Goods on offer included girdles, stockings, clothing, household supplied, beauty supplies, toiletry supplies, sewing supplies (haberdashery), shoes, hats - and much more in the style of the emporium.

The purpose-built store had two entries, one each for men and women, which navigated patrons to appropriate sections of the store.

As it was considered inappropriate for men to see, let alone purchase women’s ‘unmentionables’, the entry for men took them through sporting goods and men’s supplies.

Women were directed past eh women’s, children’s, men’s and household supplies counters before reaching the register.

The collection celebrates the 1950s beauty myth as stylised 1950s women promote toiletries, women’s garments and even vacuum cleaners.

This stunning marketing material demonstrates the context of the 1950s woman and the society they lived in.

The Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is located at 35-37 Castella Street, Lilydale.

The exhibition is open seven days until Sunday 23 October, from 10am to 4pm, except on public holidays.

Lost Cities win fans

By Peter Douglas LEGENDARY Australian frontman Ed Kuepper will be bringing his unique sounds to the crowd at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave on Thursday 25 August.

The co-founder of the punk bank The Saints is still highly active in the music scene and continues to entertain the masses, most recently during his ‘Lost Cities’ album tour.

On the tour, he has been performing solo and in duo-mode across Australia, during which he has reunited with collaborator Mark Dawson.

The pair collaborated most notably on the celebrated ‘Today Wonder’ and award-winning

‘Honey Steels Gold’ albums.

Between them, they feature two of Kuepper’s most recognisable tracks in ‘Everything I’ve Got’ and ‘The Way I made you Feel’.

Dawson will join Kuepper on stage for the Sooki Lounge show.

‘Lost Cities’ has gained rave reviews, while Kuepper’s performance of new and old material is sure to excite his band of loyal supporters.

DC has much to live for Suicide Squad (M) Starring Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto

SUICIDE Squad is another miss for DC Comics, but a promising miss nonetheless.

Government agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles a team of incarcerated supervillains to combat meta-human threats.

Like Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad contains plenty of good elements begging for a better movie.

Even though many of the members lack breathing room in the plot, the squad itself has outstanding chemistry. Margot

Robbie is endearingly unhinged as Harley Quinn, and fire-powered El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and honourable hitman Deadshot (played by the ever-charismatic Will Smith) undergo some engaging character development.

Davis is a cunning, amoral badass as Waller, and Cara Delevingne is appropriately entrancing as Enchantress, playing the millennia-old witch with sensual, malevolent gusto.

But Jared Leto’s muchtouted take on the Joker is all surface-level quirk, and the narrative structure is an absolute mess.

For much of the film, it’s frustratingly unclear where the squad is going or what they’re even trying to accomplish. As a result, the pacing feels slow and erratic. Enchantress’s plan is nebulous, and the action is short and uninspired, with few chances for the squad members to unleash their unique skills.

Suicide Squad isn’t a bad movie - it’s entertaining enough, if only for the fun, diverse characters - but isn’t the much hoped-for salvation of the DC Expanded Universe.

Keep your fingers crossed for Wonder Woman next year.

‘Emporium’, on display at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum until Sunday 23 October, explores the rise of the department store, readyto-wear clothing and advertising in the mid-20th century.

Department stores opened across Australia in response to a rise in wealth, the evolution of shopping as a pastime and the changing role of women from homemaker to active consumer.

The iconic exhibition features merchandise and picture-based advertising material from Albury’s iconic ‘Abikhair’s Emporium’, established by Syrian immigrants Saad Milham Abikhair and his wife, Shefia, in 1928.

When the Abikhair store was closing in the mid 1990s, Albury City was fortunate enough to acquire the complete merchandise and stock from the flagship Albury store for the collection.

This included original merchandise and advertising material from previous decades, especially the 1950s.

The store owners and operators, Saad and Betro Abikhair, immigrated from Mount Lebanon and opened their Swift Street store in Albury in 1928 after arriving in 1895 as hawkers from Melbourne.

THE AFL Pride Match between St Kilda and Sydney this Saturday night marks a high point in an incredible journey for Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball.

Ball, who was the first Australian Rules player at any level to come out as gay, has received enormous support from his club, which has now hosted three Pride Cups in the AFL Yarra Ranges league.

Over the weekend, the concept of a Pride-themed football match reached a wider audience than ever before, with the aim of celebrating the AFL community’s LGBTI fans, players and staff.

Ball said to the AFL’s credit, they had ensured the Yarra Glen football club had been included in promotion of the Round 21 match.

The club’s coach, Dean de Munk, has attended a St Kilda training session this week, as well as speaking with players, coaches and staff about the importance of the event.

Ball, too, featured on the front cover of the round’s AFL Record, as well as tossing the coin before the match.

“It’s an exciting time, so much work has gone into this and it’s great to see it happen on an AFL stage,” he said.

Ball said he couldn’t be more pleased with the AFL’s promotion of the event.

This had included St Kilda player Sam Gilbert taking on a spokesperson role, as well as coverage of the story of Saints’ legend Nicky Winmar and his gay son, Tynan.

Monbulk keep finals

All clubs embraced the Carolyn Goodie Memorial Cancer Awareness Round and Gembrook came home with a good win.

Emerald had their first win for the year and revived relegation stakes in Division 1.

Monbulk has kept their finals hopes alive with a win over Woori Yallock.

In Division 2, Yarra Glen enjoyed a big come-from-behind win in the last quarter against Seville to hold on to second spot on the ladder.

Gembrook and Alexandra share second spot, but sit third and fourth respectively.

Division 1 Seniors Football Emerald 13.19(97) d Belgrave 7.4(46) Emerald has registered their first win of the season at the expense of Belgrave. Emerald was able to get out to a great lead and was never headed all day - 4.3 to 3 straight gave them a ninepoint lead at quarter time. Their lead extended to 15 points at half-time with Emerald continuing to pepper the goals kicking 3.4 to one goal to increase their lead to 31 points at three quarter time.

The hosts continued to put pressure on Belgrave’s backline, having 13 scoring shots to three as they secured a very impressive 51-point win.

Monbulk were able to get out to an 11-point lead at quarter time and led at every change for the rest of the day.

They held Woori Yallock in the second and actually increased their lead to 23 points at half-time. A 3.2 to 1.2 third quarter gave them a handy break of 24 points going into the last. Michael Langworthy was a focal point up forward kicking five goals. Woori Yallock fought back in the last but could not manage to cut down the lead at the final siren as Monbulk were able to run out very comfortable 22-point winners.

Mount Evelyn took the early lead of three points into quarter time until Upwey came out to kick 5.5 to 2.4 in the second quarter to take a 16-point lead heading into half-time.

Mount Evelyn had no answers in the third, only managing to add one behind to their score while the Tigers piled on 5.3 to increase their lead to 54 points heading into the last quarter. Daniel Waters and Simon Mitchell had their kicking boots on bagging seven and

six goals respectively with UpweyTecoma kicking 6.7 to five behinds to romp away with a 92-point win.

Healesville have been beaten by Wandin and Olinda in the last four weeks and it’s looking ominous coming up to finals. Olinda were able to jump on Healesville in the first quarter, kicking five goals to one, holding the visitors to a total of 2.2 up to quarter-time; while Olinda had a handy 11.9 on the board.

Olinda was going to have to stop in the third if Healesville had any chance of catching them, but that was never the case as the ladder leaders were able to run out 67-point winners in the end.

Wandin were able to get their game going in the third quarter as they piled on 7.7 to 2.6 to shake Warburton off and take a 38-point lead heading into the last quarter. Matthew Polkinghorne was unstoppable kicking 10 goals for the match. Things evened out in the last with Warburton kicking 4.2 to 5.1, but the damage was already done as Wandin secured a 43-point win.

In the third quarter, Gembrook started to get the ascendancy on Alexandra kicking 4.5

Kinglake really were able to get away to a flyer kicking 8.3 to 3.2 in the first and really set up their win at the quarter time break. Josh Nixon was influential up forward, kicking nine goals with the support of Luke Forsyth kicking four himself. At quartertime, Kinglake’s lead was 40 points.

Kinglake upped their work rate in the third kicking 9.4 to 2.1 taking a lead of 85 points into the last quarter. Yarra Junction outscored Kinglake in the last kicking 5.2 to 3.4 but the game was well and truly over as Kinglake secured a very impressive 75-point win.

A big 7.4 to 3.3 second quarter had their lead extend to 54 points at half-time.

Powelltown had 11 goal-scorers for the day and Thornton just had no way to hold them. Powelltown kicked 12.13 in the last half to 3.6 to easily win the game.

Taking out the coveted title

By Dennis Fuller THE final of the 4BBB championship at Emerald Golf Club was played last Saturday.

Sepp Krummenacher and Peter Clowes took on Graham White and Mark Starick for the coveted title.

There was little between the two teams until Krummenacher and Clow-

es broke away on the 14th and 15th to be two up and held their nerve to be winners 3/2.

Krummenacher, the highest handicapper, played a blinder for the win, and when he was down Clowes stepped in to fill the gap.

Well done by all players, as it has been a great effort to get to the final.

There were some first-round games

played in the match play championship as well.

Leigh Morison defeated Peter Glasscock on the 19th hole and Ross Martin wore down Philip Crossley for a win 4/3.

While all this was going on, a group of golfers, not required for higher glories, played a stableford event.

John Keys (17) and Allan Eccle-

stone (23) both scored 37 points.

The top bananas in the club sat around looking serious and important and, finally, after lofty consideration, anointed Keys with the win on a countback.

John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Jones the 7th, Ken Hill the 12th, Steve Town the 13th and Mark Starick got the consolation prize

of the pro pin cash on the 18th.

Wednesday’s Obviously Fabled Golf (OFG) was a stroke event in fine conditions.

The judges could not split Ben Balfour and Sepp Krummenacher when they both had a nett 66.

Brian McCoy played a solid round for 67 while Philip Crossley came in next with 69.

Yarra Ranges bags Hills Challenge in the wet

By Jamie Strudley THE venue was Mountain Road Reserve, Cockatoo.

The event was the annual Hills Challenge, which is run by Cockatoo Little Athletics Club.

After overnight rain, the normally water-logged and muddy course held up fairly well, with no shoes lost this year.

One rival club, Pakenham, set the tone for the day by having their runners run in more than one race to maximise points in this points-driven event; so when asked to step up and take on multiple races, Yarra Ranges’ chargers were eager and more than willing to go above and beyond.

The club spirit was terrific as usual, and every runner was encouraged and applauded over the line; all this was enough to see Yarra Ranges Athletics win for the third year in a row and take home the perpetual Hills Trophy.

A massive thank you to all who supported this event.

Next week is the cream event for the club.

The club cross country championship day is at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn.

The first three runners in each age group and gender will win a medal.

Several athletes will be competing at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Canberra next weekend.

Good luck to Kiara, Maddie, Georgia, Lily ‘P’, Lily ‘T’ and Sam. Race with Yarra Ranges spirit.

The cross country season is nearly finished, with the presentation day to be held at Hedgend Maze on Saturday 27 August.

A great location and fun day for the whole family.

Motoring Bates, Jordan win through

By Dean Thompson ALEXANDRA Speedway Club is the only Victorian Speedway that runs events into August each season, with the annual three-hour enduro again giving 1500 speedway fans a muchneeded dose of action.

The speedway was decided in the protest room after the fans had gone home thinking somebody else had won.

The winners stand as Alexandra club members Lenny Bates and Andrew Jordan.

Sixteen heat races determined the actual starting positions for the long journey, with Pakenham brothers Damien and Brendan Miller qualifying in the pole position.

Most of the top 10 positions were secured by pre-race tips to win or figure well in the race.

During the feature itself, the Miller boys held the lead early.

Moule and Ramsdale held the lead before last year’s winners, Daniel Unternahrer and Darren Nelson, took over the lead and looked on track to defend their crown after Moule headed to the pits.

Combinations such as the Brad Warren and Russell Hill (flat tyres and axle damage), Colin and Corey Lincoln (blown engine in their second car during heats), and Scott Ellis and Darren Forrest (mechanical issues), were out of the running.

Nelson and Jordan and Brendan Miller began the last restart close together, and the battle in particular between Nelson and Jordan was side-byside for the last few moments.

Finally, a lapped car just ahead of them as they exited the dog-leg split the two, with Nelson going low and Jordan high and around the back marker before both lead cars came together.

Nelson continued on at full speed to cross the line first, Jordan in trying to catch back up got all crossed up in turn four and Miller ripped past into second before Jordan crossed the line.

Stewards were unsure of the outcome and debate began.

Nelson returned to the line and approach Jordan to say bad luck and Jordan’s teammate Lenny Bates came out for a potential presentation, however was already keen to appeal a result if the stewards did not make a call in Jordan’s favour.

The stewards, after discussion, awarded the win to Nelson and his teammate Unternahrer, and they instantly did a victory lap; as this occurred Bates and Jordan paid up to appeal.

No trophies were awarded and the teams headed back to the pits and then onto the appeal room.

After midnight, Bates and Jordan were installed as the winners with the Miller boys second, and Nelson and Unternahrer back to third place, as a

After the race, Jordan and Bates were pleased, while none too pleased with how the race finished.

“We are all race drivers, we just want to finish in front of the other guy when we hit the track,” Bates said.

“We appealed because we believe that we were impeded by the car that crossed the line to win the race.

“Not the way anybody wants to win a race, however we believe the right result now stands.”
