Ice crime rate up 13,000% on 2008 Ice is challenging alcohol as the scourge of Geelong nightclubs after a 13,000 per cent increase in methamphetamine offences over the past eight years, according to stakeholders.

Greater Geelong had .5 methamphetamine offences for every 100,000 residents in 2008 but the

rate reached 65.7 per 100,000 in March this year, according to Victoria Police statistics.

The change had made drugs the focus of efforts to prevent nightclub violence 10 years after the introduction of a Geelong Liquor Accord to crack down on drunken assaults, stakeholders said.

In Brief Prisoners secured Prisoners posing “the greatest security and safety risk” have moved into a new 40-bed prison complex at Lara, the State Government has announced.

The Olearia unit at Barwon Prison was the only maximum-security jail facility outside Melbourne, said Corrections Minister Steve Herbert.

‘Rogue’ warning The prosecution of a “rogue” Geelong bus operator will serve as a warning to others failing to comply with safety obligations, according to Transport Safety Victoria (TSV).

Shirley Ann Styles, formerly trading as J & S Transport Geelong, was fined and placed on a good-behaviour bond after pleading guilty to operating a bus without accreditation and failing to comply with a prohibition notice, TSV said.

Theft threat Police are hunting a man for information over an attempted theft from a vehicle that ended with threats against its owner in the driveway of a Geelong West home.

Veteran trader welcomes call for 40km/h city limit

By Luke Voogt A veteran Geelong trader and former mayor has welcomed a proposal to cut the central city area’s speed limit to 40kmh.

Hayden Spurling, who has traded in Geelong for 45 years, said he regularly witnessed cars and trucks exceeding the current 50 kmh speed limit and running red lights.

“I think the 40 kmh is well overdue but it will only work if it’s policed,” he said.

“All we can do is encourage council to do it ASAP.” Mr Spurling said he saw two trucks “racing each other” moments before talking to the Indy at his CBD store on Thursday.

Inadequate policing of speed limits in the CBD encouraged drivers to flout the law, he said.

“Everyone races to get to the next set of lights.”

City Hall’s William Tieppo announced the proposal this week.

A reduced speed zone would improve safety for all road users and access for pedestrians, he said.

“In the past five years there have been 156 crashes in central Geelong. Of these, 52 people suffered serious injuries.”

“These could have been prevented or lessened with a reduced speed limit.”

Mr Tieppo said the speed reduction would only add 23 seconds to the travelling time on Ryrie Street from Latrobe Terrace to Swanston Street.

The time would likely be less because the average speed in the zone subject to the reduced limit was already less than 40 kmh, he said.

Other major Australian cities, including Melbourne, had successfully introduced 40 kmh limits, he said.

“Central Geelong is a place for people to shop, work study, live, dine and be entertained.

“Our streets are the focus of these activities

and vital for the CBD to a successful, vibrant and liveable city.”

Geelong’s council administrators will discuss the reduced speed proposal at their meeting next week.

Mr Spurling also welcomed a City Hall announcement this week that it would explore options to remove trucks from the CBD. “They create noise, traffic and danger to pedestrians and road users, which is not desirable in a CBD,” he said.

The City has been trying to force trucks out of central Geelong for more than a decade amid concerns about traffic snarls, safety and pollution.

Previous efforts have included limiting access to Malop Street and directing trucks to use McKillop Street when travelling east or west across the city.

The McKillop Street move led to the street’s residents complaining about additional truck traffic outside their homes.

About 120 people participated in a “robust discussion” at Lara for Geelong council administrators’ second in a series of community meetings Administrators’ chairwoman Dr Kathy Alexander said the meeting highlighted that a new municipal vision under development would have to acknowledge the “villages that make up greater Geelong”.

The Corangamite MP turned the project’s first sod on Wednesday saying the facility would be “an important community hub for seniors in our wonderful multicultural city”.

Cliff ‘risk’ Safety concerns over cliff cracks have forced the rerouting of Surf Coast Walk near Anglesea, according to the coast’s foreshore management.

Four-hundred metres of the walk at Demon’s Bluff was now further inland after an engineer’s report identified a “moderate risk” said Great Ocean Road Coast Committee.

Harry sees cognac glass as half full

By Luke Voogt Cats defender Harry Taylor still has a bottle of cognac he bought after the 2011 Grand Final which he hopes to open after his next premiership.

“That’s still tucked away ready to go,” he said ahead of his 200th game this weekend.

“I’m getting thirsty, if you like, and I’d love to be able to taste it.”

But he knew the Cats must improve if he was to taste premiership glory again.

“When we’re good we’re very good and average is pretty average.”

Despite the Cats’ inconsistent year, Taylor remained proud of his years with the club.

“I feel like I’m part of the furniture.”

Taylor said he was asleep when Bomber Thompson first called him ahead of the 2007 draft.

“I woke the next day and had 84 missed calls on my phone.”

Film-maker Miranda Nation is returning to her childhood home of Geelong so she can shoot a new film - with local talent.

“We’d love to collaborate with as many locals as possible,” she said.

“Not only actors but crew, businesses people or anyone who would like to get involved.”

Miranda recently finished the script for Undertow and will shoot the $2 million film in Geelong during November.

She described it as a dark psychological thriller about a woman who becomes obsessed with a pregnant woman after losing her own baby.

“I think it’s something that touches a lot of people,” Miranda said.

Miranda and producer Lyn Norfor had been working on the film for five years, she said.

They recently scouted locations at Geelong and the Surf Coast.

Miranda said Geelong had an “incredible mix of urban, industrial and coastal landscapes”.

“I just always pictured the film taking place in this part of the world. I find Geelong really fascinating.”

The 39-year-old filmmaker grew up in Highton but left Geelong in 1997 to pursue an acting career.

She played guest roles in Australian dramas including Stingers, Blue Heelers and the Australian film version of MacBeth.

Miranda moved into writing and directing in 2010 with “a passion to create strong roles for women”.

Her recent short film Perception won a Dendy Award for Best Short Film at the 2013 Sydney Film Festival.

Double Take An Indy reader was amused to find a new addition to her Geelong West streetscape this week.

Amid the usual bitumen, kerbing and signage, a three-legged barbecue had taken residence in the middle of a road (pictured).

Possibly the ‘keep left’ sign beside it was directing foot traffic to the snags and bread, Double Take suggested.

“And go right for sauce and onions!” replied our reader.

Whatever, it was certainly a roundabout way of hosting a barbie!

Why the anonymity? Was he worried the vendor would track him down for seconds?

However, the same courtesy was not extended to the alleged culprit.

In the interests of fairness, surely the description should have been: “A respected Mediterranean dish with a viscous vegetable condiment”.

The Cats might have handed the Bombers a lesson in footy on the weekend but perhaps an English tutorial would help as well.

According to a pre-match report on the Essendon website, young Geelong player Lincoln McCarthy was ruled out with an ‘Abductor’.

What, he was abducted? Was there a ransom?

Essendon later corrected the record in a matchday report documenting McCarthy’s ‘adductor’ injury.

Must have been a relief to mum and dad!

Witnesses, whistleblowers, undercover operatives – they’re often unidentified in news reports to protect their safety.

Fair enough, too, when they’re exposing issues of significant public importance. Think corruption, organised crime, sex abuse, cops on the take.

But diarrhoea?

Well, personal accounts of gastro now apparently warrant anonymity in Geelong at least.

According to a weekend news report, “a respected local businessman” was going from both ends after consuming dodgy takeaway at a recent soccer match.

Lobbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s return Committee for Geelong could seek an extended term for Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council administrators, according to its chairman.

The committee would â&#x20AC;&#x153;reserve the rightâ&#x20AC;? to call for an extension if it believed that the three administrators had more work to do at City Hall, Dan Simmonds said.

The scale of the job meant the administrators â&#x20AC;&#x153;must be given the timeâ&#x20AC;?, he said.

The Andrews Government appointed the administrators after sacking Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council in April amid claims of bullying at City Hall.

The government initially tried to sack the council until 2020 but a public outcry led to the Coalition and Greens blocking the move in the Upper House. The government then announced a new council election in October 2017.

The committee describes itself as an â&#x20AC;&#x153;indepen-

Koala chief supports call for Lara tourist drawcard

By LUKE VOOGT Australia’s leading koala group has thrown its support behind a plan to make Lara a tourism centre for the iconic marsupial.

Australian Koala Foundation chief executive officer Deborah Tabart praised the proposed intitiative to rejuvenate the species’ local population while creating a new international tourist drawcard on Geelong’s doorstep.

“We’re 100 per cent behind anything that can help koala populations recover,” Ms Tabart said.

The Geelong Indy revealed the plan in July after tourism operator Janine Duffy unveiled it as part of her bid to increase Lara’s koala population. She called for property owners near the You Yangs to plant trees on their land to support growth in the area’s koala numbers.

The idea earned support from Avalon Airport boss Justing Giddings and local tourism body director Roger Grant.

But Ms Tabart warned the project would require careful planning and could take decades for positive results.

“You could do a hell of a lot of work and not achieve anything,” she said.

The project would have to take into account factors that had slashed Lara’s koala population to about 100, Ms Tabart said.

“Certainly, Lara has got a lot of major roads around it and the vegetation is quite poor.”

Ms Tabart said she had witnessed “failed projects” to rejuvenate koala populations in the Otways.

A major problem in the Otways was the mass planting of one type of tree, whereas koalas required a variety of species for their nutritional needs, she said.

“I’ve been in my job for 28 years and I’ve seen a lot of wasted resources.”

Ms Tabart encouraged the people behind the plan to contact her foundation’s scientists.

“We’d be happy to give our advice,” she said.

Lotto luck win in divison one After 16 years in business, Norlane’s Robin Avenue Lotto outlet has sold its first Saturday night divison one-winning ticket.

The customer, who chose to remain anonymous, won a prize of more than $408,000.

Store owner Peter Grech was thrilled to sell the winning ticket.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” he said He said his dad owned a Tatts outlet and sold a division one winner about 30 years ago.

“I’ve always wanted to know what it’s like and have the same experience,” he said.

“We’re all retirees now so we are rapt.

The private syndicate leader explained she thought she might have won thanks to some good karma.

“It’s funny because I recently offered my car park ticket to a stranger looking for a spot, because I had another 30 minutes left on my space, so I handed it to him and he said, ‘I hope you win TattsLotto’.”

Community first for new top cop Fighting crime will be a “joint community effort” under Geelong’s new top cop.

Superintendent Craig Gillard said working with the community would be his priority as Divisional Commander for Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast.

“I have seen first-hand the quantity and quality of the work undertaken by our police members across the division and the effort they make to improve the safety of their local communities,” he said on Geelong Police social media.

“My strong view is that policing is a joint community effort; we need to support each other to reduce both crime and the impact of crime together with road trauma.”

Police and the community must work cooperatively to reduce both victimisation and the impact of crime, Supt Gillard said.

“To this end, I am keen to meet and work with other stakeholders in building upon the number of excellent initiatives already in place in our communities and to working together to ensure Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast areas are a great place to live.”

Making policing easier for officers would also be a “key component” of his role, Supt Gillard said.

“As a succession of Chief Commissioners have espoused, we cannot simply arrest our way out of rising crime rates.

“Although our police are well-skilled in the important roles of detecting and investigating

Supt Gillard said he joined Victoria Police more than 30 years ago after growing up in Mildura.

He worked in Melbourne and Mildura before spending time as Officer in Charge at Halls Gap in the Grampians National Park.

Supt Gillard later moved to Ballarat where his role as Local Area Commander for Colac and Corangamite area began his “connection” to the Geelong region.

In 2012 he was appointed Operational Support Division commander for Western Region, working from Geelong’s State Government offices and making a “sea change” to the Surf Coast.

Revised sail festival weighs anchor “Disquiet” about earlier dates for Geelong’s Festival or Sails has prompted Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) to deny that a bike race “bumped” the event from its usual schedule.

The festival will now run from 21 to 26 January before the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race the following weekend.

Festival chairman Peter Alexander revealed the date change on 22 July, saying it would allow for a “nine-day feast of sporting action” incorporating both events.

But in an emailed letter to members seven days later he sought to explain “the rationale for the move”.

“Firstly, let’s be very clear. The RGYC was not ‘forced’ to move the event, nor ‘bumped’ by the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR),” Mr Alexander wrote.

“The dates for the 2017 CEGORR were announced just two weeks ago as January 28 and 29 and clearly would have clashed with our original dates.

“We had been aware for some time that this may have been a possibility and had been proactively assessing our options.

“It would have made no economic or strategic sense, for either RGYC or Geelong or CEGORR for that matter, to run our event effectively in competition with the Cadel Evans event.”

The board and committee believed that the date clash “actually presented a positive opportunity to expand the festival”, Mr Alexander wrote.

“The new opportunity goes further in allowing us to lock in a set date for the event each year, being the second last weekend in January every year, regardless of what day of the week Australia Day falls on.

“Having certainty around our dates and being slightly earlier in January will assist in our bid to retain and attract sponsors, potentially capture more of the Sydney to Hobart fleet and will also be clearer of the end of school holidays across the country.

“Our new arrangement also allows us to expand the sailing action beyond the traditional four days and develop a broader range of competition, opportunities and attractions across classes.”

“Partnering” the Cadel Evans race would deliver enhanced economic benefits to Geelong and showcasing the region to an international audience, Mr Alexander wrote.

“We understand that not everyone will welcome the changes.

“However, we make no apology for making what we believe was a carefully analysed decision in the best long-term interests of the event and the club and which will underpin our future growth and prosperity.”

The Festival of Sails includes the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest sailing regatta as well as a series of other yacht races and various onshore activities, traditionally including Australia Day celebrations.

Commuters, tourists in ferry plan

Future of disused ferry still unclear

By Luke Voogt The owner of a ferry dumped on Corio Bay has failed to outline a future for the vessel, prompting Victoria’s channels authority to seek legal advice.

Victorian Regional Channels Authority (VRCA) gave the owner until 16 June to divulge his plans for the ferry but had yet to receive a response. The authority set the deadline after moving The Queen of Melbourne to Corio Quay in June. The vessel had sat disused at anchor on the bay for nearly a year.

VRCA chief Peter McGovern said the legal advice included how the authority could recover the expenses of the keeping the vessel docked.

“It’s a special area of law called Admiralty Law,” he said. “Meanwhile, it’s still tied up nice and safe in Corio Quay.”

The VRCA had set up a camera on board to discourage late-night intruders and was conducting routine inspections of the ferry, Mr McGovern said.

The owner could incur costs of several thousand dollars, he said.

In 2014 Farooq Qamar bought The Queen of Melbourne in Norway for $300,000 and brought it to Australia. A standoff between Mr Qamar and ship captain Stephan Tate left the ferry stranded on Corio Bay in May last year.

The service would need to attract 200 to 250 passengers a day to be viable, Mr Rance said.

to predict because commuters were less likely to book in advance, he said.

“I wouldn’t expect to be in a large volume in the first couple of days. We expect it to build over the coming weeks.”

Port Phillip Ferries has been in discussion with the State Government about the future of the service.

Daily commuter ferries began running between Portarlington and Melbourne on Thursday after the success of trial runs across Port Phillip.

Port Phillip Ferries carried more than 900 passengers on the three trials before introducing the trial commuter services this week.

Bellarine Ferry Group’s John Rae described the patronage as a fabulous result.

“It’s given Port Phillip Ferries the confidence to bring it down here.”

The group hoped to help the ferry continue running until summer so it could tap into the local tourist season, Mr Rae said.

“I think there will be ferries full of people coming to Portarlington to explore the Bellarine.

“One of the keys is bringing people back from Melbourne to enjoy our beaut beaches, restaurants, wineries and everything else.”

Mr Rae said the ferry could bring business to the Bellarine Peninsula and even alleviate some of its summer parking woes.

The ferry could also provide opportunities for winter tourism such as golf and winery tours, he said.

“We’ve got fabulous golf courses down here.”

Mr Rae said “public transport-starved” residents on the peninsula needed the ferry.

“Here’s a chance to go direct to Melbourne and not sit in a traffic jam or on a crowded train.”

The ferry group would send timetables to 22,000 homes on the peninsula to encouraging local support for the service, Mr Rae said.

“We’re now looking at the future.”

The ferry departs from Portarlington at 7am weekdays and from Melbourne on 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, with other daily trips also available.

The ferry will run until at least the end of August after the company extended an initial eightweek trial and updated its website on Wednesday to accept bookings.

By Luke Voogt A ‘Citizens’ Jury’ to shape Geelong’s next council could fail to represent the interests of residents, a former Geelong MP has warned.

Geelong’s “widely different communities” would be difficult for any single jury to represent, Peter Loney said.

“In Geelong, with this huge area we cover, it’s nowhere near homogenous.

“I’m not saying you need someone from Ocean Grove, one from Newtown and so on, but it needs to represent the different community interests here.”

The Andrews government last month appointed the newDemocracy Foundation to establish a jury to consider ward and councillor numbers and how to elect the mayor and deputy.

The group will mail 15,000 invitations to greater Geelong residents and then select 100 jury members

through a random stratified draw based on census data.

Mr Loney, Labor’s former Lara MP, said the jury had the potential to recommend an ideal council structure but only if it worked off a “true blank sheet”.

“This could give us an opportunity to develop a 21st century local government model that could be a pilot for the rest of state.”

But focussing excessively on questions such as “whether we can have a directly elected mayor” would be a missed opportunity for a process costing $222,000, Mr Loney said.

“A quarter of million is a fair bit. We’ve had a number of goes at this (council structure) in Geelong and we haven’t done it correctly.”

Mr Loney said the jury should also consider City Hall’s administration rather than just the councillors.

“The real big issue ... is the bureaucracy.”

Foundation executive director Iain Walker said newDemocracy had a proven record of producing representative juries.

Only jury recommendations with at last 80 per cent majority support would go to the State Government, he said.

But he believed that the government would need time to act on any jury recommendations.

“Could we create something that is the envy of the country and beyond? Yes, but it’s something that might take longer than October 2017 (Geelong’s next council elections).”

Mr Walker said the jury would focus on the area of “least trust” in councils, which was representation.

Last week’s Indy wrongly reported Mr Loney as saying changes to council structure should require a referendum. Gary Oraniuk made the comment.

Liberal MP Andrew Katos has raised concerns that the State Government could be using the jury to deliver the government’s preferred council structure for Geelong.

He questioned in the Indy last month why the jury was necessary when the Victorian Electoral Commission had already recommended a new structure for the council after months of review.

Mr Katos was also concerned that the jury could recommend removing residents’ right to vote for the city’s mayor in a return to the “bad old days” of councillors making the decision themselves behind closed doors.

But Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said Mr Katos lacked “faith in the ability of the Geelong community to decide how their council should look and work”.

“We want to listen to what the people of Geelong want and the Citizens’ Jury is a great way to do this.”

A fine idea for cyclists With increasing traffic, the problem of motorvehicle-versus-cyclist-rights becomes deeper with no easy solution.

This or something similar may have been presented before but my suggestion is that it should be compulsory for cyclists on any public thoroughfare to wear a light linen vest of a fluorescent colour, red or yellow, whichever is chosen, easily secured by Velcro strips with no signage allowed.

This would enable motorists a better vision of them. Persons found not wearing such should, on production of identification such as a driver’s licence, Medicare card, credit card or other, be fined on the spot, say $100. For those with no identification the fine should increase to, say, $150.

The front wheel of the bicycle could be removed until the fine was paid, when the wheel would be reconnected.

No children for old men

of humanitarian gesture why didn’t they adopt a theme of international brotherhood and working together for world peace at this time of so much terrorist activity?

While it’s good to be concerned about the environment, why not spend some of the obscene amounts of money spent on trying to combat climate change to instead help those in desperate need?

The world spent over US $1 trillion over the past three years for no significant impact on the climate.

It would seem to me that any man aged 78 who planned to have children may well already be on the slippery slope to dementia.

Men of this age are, realistically, on borrowed time – both physically and mentally – and highly unlikely to have the stamina and will to look after teenage children. To do otherwise would be the height of narcissism and irresponsibility and almost certainly condemn the child to a future without a father figure capable of making a contribution to its personal development.

His partner in the venture, although a little younger, was also clearly driven by factors other than the longer-term welfare of the child, including an over blown ego or sense of self-importance.

Rockabilly night going old-school

By Luke Voogt Rockabillies will descend on Geelong for day of old-school rides, hair and tunes at Rats, Tatts N’ PinUps next weekend.

Rockabilly bands and hot-rod owners have flocked to similar gigs in east Melbourne this year to belt out some tunes and show off their beauties.

Don Giovinazzo has played at several with his band Rosie and The Mighty Kings.

“This sort of event has never been held in Geelong before – it’s going to be massive,” he said.

“I love these events – you get to see cars you’ll never see again; it’s family friendly and it’s like a community –- that’s what the Rockabilly scene is all about.”

Don played on and off for 20 years with his band (then The Mighty Kings).

A surprise 40th birthday present from his partner and an odd coincidence got him back into music three years ago.

“I was expecting a recliner, and I got a double bass,” he said.

Just a week later, he got a call from an old band mate to get The Kings back together.

The band became Rosie and The Mighty Kings eight months later when Don invited his friend Rosie Conforto up on stage.

Rosie, already a known singer, belted out a rockabilly cover of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, much to the crowd’s delight.

“She put on her own twist on it everyone went crazy - she blew the crowd away,” he said.

“The light bulb went off. We had a chat and she was happy to jump on board.”

Don describes The Kings style as “rockin’, poppin’, pedal to the medal rockabilly”.

As well as their own tunes they play covers with a rockabilly twists, from Aerosmith to Elvis.

Rosie is powerful, yet sassy and sultry at the same time, he said.

“With a girl who can sing like she can – she can rock the stage” “We can all sing but there are not many female front singers in the rockabilly scene in Australia.”

Don will also be closing the night playing double bass in Anthony Petrucci’s The Elvis Presley Show.

He’s been working with Anthony for a year and a half now, playing the hits of early and “movie” Elvis.

“I’ve watched a lot of Elvis movies – when (Anthony is) on stage he walks and talks the same,” he said.

“He’s very true to his art.”

Along with its rockabilly line-up, the event includes tattoo comps, art galleries, barbers, and uniquely, said Don, rides for little rockabillies.

“I’ve never seen a rockabilly event which caters for kids like this,” he said.

Singlettes just fabulous

By Luke Voogt The Fabulous Singlettes will come to Geelong for the first time this month – and they’re ready to sing up a storm.

The playful, three-woman cover group will sing the greatest hits of the ’60s, ’70s and beyond at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 27 August.

The Aussie trio of Naomi Eyers, Melissa Langton and Diane Dixon have been playing together for almost 20 years.

Eyers helped found the group in 1986, at a time when there “weren’t many retro acts around”.

She said the powerful soul singers and iconic pop bands of the ’60s inspired her and “the original girls” to fill that void.

“I think we were one of the first ’60s tribute acts in Australia.”

“It was such a great musical era, a melting pot of blues, soul and pop – so it’s always been a fun show.”

The Fabulous Singlettes bring dance moves to die for, frocks galore and beehives that are “a triumph of hairspray over gravity”, Eyers said.

“It was a great era for hairstyles.”

But it is the Singlettes’ harmonies and sly, camp humour that have seen them perform around the world.

They have played in TV specials, Royal Variety Shows, and London’s West End, reaping awards and rave reviews along the way.

Signs of health in film festival An international film festival focussing on health issues has returned to Geelong this month after debuting last year, organisers have announced.

Reel Health International Short Film Festival will continue at various venues until 29 August after screening its first films for 2016 last week. The festival of 12 films from around the world provided an “innovative platform for film-makers and filmgoers to talk about genuine health issues and how they affect different communities” the organisers said.

Film festival director Jonathan Green said it redefined how people viewed health through the visual medium and ignited passionate and meaningful conversations.

“During the festival, audiences will see films that share personal journeys and family experiences, and that are truly inspirational, thought-provoking and breathtaking,” Mr Green said.

“The short film genre is a platform that has the potential to change the paradigm of health conversations by giving a voice to the voiceless and providing an avenue for great story tellers to tell their health stories.”

Film-maker Corinne Maunder was looking forward to being part of the festival.

“Short films are often a labour of love and there’s rarely a budget left over for marketing so I was thrilled to hear Barwon Health will be screening my film My Great Uncle Peter as part of the film festival. It involves sketches, taking photos for the pose and making a bozzetto (small model in wax or clay).

Sue makes a number of wax, clay and silicon moulds before finally filling a “negative” bricklike mould with molten bronze.

“Once the bronze has cooled the case is broken open to reveal the model,” she said.

“Many hours are required to ‘chase’ (clean up) the bronze, weld parts together, to bring it to a high polish before patination - the adding of colour - and then waxing to preserve this patination.”

“I just love the whole process.”

Sue’s showpiece sculptures, “After the Swim”, will be on display on the trail.

The Surf Coast Art Trail takes place 13 and 14 August, with 41 venues sprinkled across the hinterland and coastal towns of the Surf Coast Shire.

Some artworks will be on sale and trail maps are available at www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au

Fairhaven artist Sue Corbet will display bronze works created in one of the birthplaces of modern sculpture in this year’s Surf Coast Art Trail.

The 70-year-old sculptor has travelled to Italy every year since 2004, when she began sculpting “properly”.

“Beauty inspires me, human beings inspire me,” she said.

“Italy inspires me too with its wonderful art and history.”

The desire to learn Italian also motivated Sue to spend at least a few months every year in Florence.

While there she found a 'family-run’ art foundry to work on her own, while getting physical help for the heavy parts, mould-making and fusing bronze.

“I am surrounded by art of all genres and artists of many nationalities,” she said.

Sue said making sculptures is a long and complicated process.

Audi Avant still at the sharp end

By Ewan Kennedy AUDI station wagons, which they call Avants, are huge in Europe and particularly in their home market of Germany.

Avants are easy to spot, just drive on an autobahn at high speed, but keep out of the fast lane, pretty soon one will pass you at 200+ kmh.

It will probably be black and a sales rep of some sort will be at the steering wheel in a hurry to their next appointment.

Sounds like heaven? It is, but sadly not in Australia. The driving, that is.

The latest A4 Avant joined the sedan a couple of months ago.

It’s slightly longer and wider than the old Avant and sits on a longer wheelbase.

Most of the extra size has gone into significantly increasing legroom in the rear, although there’s also more elbowroom and headroom.

Audi Avant 2WD model starts with a recommended list price of $63,900, the quattro allwheel-drive $72,900. That’s $3000 over the cost of the equivalent sedans.

Styling follows the latest successful Audi theme of sharp lines and neat geometric angles.

The wagon’s rear has been neatly integrated into the front shape and profile. Overall, this certainly doesn’t scream out that it’s a station wagon.

The interior features Audi’s usual immaculate style and quality of finish. This is an upmarket stylish place in which to travel.

Audi’s new ‘virtual cockpit’ instrument layout is easy to use and can be tailored by the driver to show the most important displays according to different driving situations.

Two drivetrains are offered, both based around a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a seven-speed Audi dual-clutch automatic, tagged S-tronic.

The A4 front-driver develops 140 kW of power, and 320 Nm of torque from 1450 to 4200 rpm.

In the Avant quattro all-wheel-drive the engine has a sportier state of tune to bring it up to 185 kW, with 370 Nm between 1600 and 4500.

Our test vehicle was a quattro.

Audi’s MMI infotainment system is one of the most advanced currently on the market.

It is controlled through an easy to see 8.3-inch screen.

It has a DVD player, which can also operate through optional rear-seat tablet screen.

There’s up to10Gb of music storage. It receives live traffic reports and five free map updates are in included in the A4’s price.

Australasian NCAP has rated the Audi A4 Avant as a five-star vehicle.

In the cargo area there are safety rails on the floor and several straps to let you secure items in various ways.

The adjustable cargo cover looks to be able to take a fair bit of punishment in crashes.

The front seats are comfortable, though some may find them a little narrower than they like.

The rears are noticeably more spacious than before, with legroom for full-sized adults.

Two will be more comfortable than three in the back seat.

The luggage area has a volume of 505 litres

with the rear seat backs in place, and 1510 litres with the 40/20/40 split-fold backrests down.

They don’t fold completely flat but stop an irritating few degrees above where we would like them to be.

The sleek slope of the rear robs the wagon of some carrying ability as large boxy items won’t fit.

The turbo-petrol TFSI engine seems to have endless amounts of torque. There’s some minor lag before you get the full benefit of this grunt, but we have felt worse.

Driving modes are Normal and Sport. Changes to the engine and transmission characteristics are quite obvious.

Sport has the A4 down a gear or two most of the time, which chew up fuel. However, the gear selector is extremely easy to use so you can juggle performance needs in a moment.

Smoothness and quietness are very good, all the more so when you consider the added difficulty of designing a station wagon body. These Audis make excellent long distance cruisers.

Handling is neutral until the cars are pushed really hard, when the front-driver exhibits some safe understeer.

The quattro, with its added grip and lower profile tyres, can produce the sort of driving that keen punters love.

The new high-tech Audi headlight system darkens the LED lights only in the area where it would dazzle other drivers, either in front or ahead.

The rest of the lights remain on high beam giving a much broader view.

It works extremely well in country areas, providing almost the feeling of having daylight in front.

However, these Audi lights are whiter and brighter than conventional ones and may give the impression they are on high beam.

We found it best to use conventional low beam around town and only switch to the intelligent LED system on the open road.

Audi’s new A4 Avant quattro wagon gives sporting performance allied with added carrying ability and it looks good too, definitely one to add to your list of possibilities if you don’t want the bulk of an SUV. Note that the next cab off the Audi A4 rank is the Allroad version due early September. It’s a neat cross between the standard wagon tested here and an SUV.

SPORT Taylor-made for long haul Geelong star backman Harry Taylor will play his 200th game this Sunday, in another crucial match for the Cats top four chances.

Taylor has been one of the AFL’s best defenders in the past two decades, shutting down key forwards and generating run from the backline.

But Cats recruiting boss Stephen Wells said this week that Taylor was far from a standout in his teenage years in WA. “Harry wasn’t a readymade player in any way,” Wells said.

“He hadn’t dominated in the WAFL, but he’d shown a skill set that we thought would allow him to develop as an AFL defender.”

Wells selected Taylor as a 21-year-old in the 2007 draft, a speculative replacement for injured key defender Matthew Egan.

Taylor’s attitude during his first season in 2008 thouroughly impressed Wells.

“When he turned up, he was as professional as you can possibly be from day one,” he said.

Taylor developed his talents alongside club greats Matthew Scarlett and Tom Harley and be-

“Harry gives himself the best chance to perform well every week,” Wells said, The work paid off, with Taylor playing in two premierships and becoming a two-time All Australian.

In the 2009 Grand Final, he held St Kilda superstar Nick Riewoldt to one goal as the Cats won by 12 points.

A brilliant reader of the play, Taylor leads Geelong in intercept marks and remains one of the best defensive markers in the AFL. The Cats hope Taylor can nullify Jack Reiwoldt and Richmond’s forwardline in his 200th, to give them the percentage boost they desperately need.

They are locked on points with Sydney, GWS and Adelaide in the battle for a top four spot, with only the Giants playing a top-eight team this weekend.

GWS will host the Eagles, who have had a poor year away from home.

Also this week Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy signed a deal that will keep him at the Cats until at least the end of 2017.

McCarthy earned the deal by resurrecting his career following a series of injury problems.

After just five AFL games in his first four seasons with Geelong, he has played 14 this year.

“It’s a great club, and I just want to repay the faith they have had in me over the past four or five years,“ he said.

North Geelong Warriors notched up another win to propel themselves to second place, overcoming a difficult opponent in Springvale White Eagles.

The Warriors now head out for their third road trip in a row to face Box Hill away.

Box Hill have proven unpredictable throughout the 2016 campaign and recent form of two losses and a draw shouldn’t be taken into account as they are a tough unit at the Wembley Park home.

A few weeks back Box Hill was the first team to notch a defeat for the then runaway leader of NPL2 East, Dandenong Thunder, so the calibre of their performance needs to be seriously considered.

Sitting well away from promotion contention you can expect a free-spirited Box Hill ready to entertain its fans and allow their coaching staff a good insight into their talent pool for 2017.

In North Geelong Warriors’ encounter with Springvale White Eagles the visitors took only seven minutes to open the scoring when Michael Anderson who last was provider turned scorer punishing the white Eagles after meeting a precise cross from wing partner Nicholas Jurcic.

Springvale responded quickly though, five minutes later John Pykett latched onto a through ball to net past Daniel Zilic.

The remainder of the first half played out with nervy football where either side could have taken a lead but scores remained unchanged at the interval.

After the break North Geelong wasted no time to regain the lead when in-form striker Kene Eze put the visitors up 2-1 two minutes after the restart.

Having taken the wind out of the Eagles' wings, the Warriors marched further forward and dominated the match.

Anglers revel in ideal conditions ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Ideal conditions over the weekend provided plenty of opportunities for local anglers.

Australian salmon were caught on Corio Bay around Cunningham Pier and toward Western Beach as they erupted on the surface while feeding. Although not the largest specimens, they provided great sport on light tackle. Pinkie snapper remained schooled up in tight against structure in deeper water, with slowly sinking soft plastics catching fish to 45cm.

Clifton Springs continued fishing well for squid in good numbers and sizes. Peri and Michael Stavropolus and Damien Raven found a dense school while drifting slowly over the grass beds in 4m to 5m, boating 30 squid to 1kg on size 3 jibs. Other anglers reported similar catches around the same depth. Whiting were caught in 7m to 8m out from the old Dell on pippie and squid baits.

Deeper water off St Leonards and further south toward Mud Island produced gummy shark on fresh squid. Anglers fishing offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads caught snapper and gummies. Water around 20m to 40m was productive, especially around tide changes.

Bancoora Beach was a standout for surf fishing, with large schools of salmon over 1kg taking lures. Jan Juc also yielded salmon but the rock platforms around Lorne were better.

Tony Hynds travelled down to the Hopkins River, which was low and discoloured.

Tony found bream holding around the bridge near the entrance, catching eight while casing small vibes and Cranka Crabs.

The odd Hopkins estuary perch was also banked by anglers targeting bream.

Southern bluefin tuna were boated in 55m or deeper between Port Fairy and Portland.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore began fishing Lake Purrumbete before dawn on Monday morning after putting in numerous hours during recent week trolling the margins for trophy trout. Finally Michael boated a brown trout of 4.4kg on a Rapala F7 Spotted Dog lure after a good fight on the east bank.

With four weeks remaining to close out the automatic promotion, the top three teams are

separated by one point now having built a slight buffer on Melbourne City in fourth. Expect to see a very dynamic ladder in the closing weeks as all top three teams face some difficult fixtures to close out the year.
