“To get on the back of a superbike with a former Australian or World Champion road racer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m feeling the ‘need for speed’,” said an excited Cr Dobie before the laps.

Councillor Roberts was clocked at 240km/h during her lap - so did our own mayor go faster?

“I was so flabbergasted (after the ride) I didn’t think to ask,” she laughed.

However, she said she had passed

the challenge on to the Mayor of Benalla Justin King to do a lap when the Superbikes head to Winton later in the year.

“The Superbike rounds are held all around Australia, the mayor of Wanneroo challenged me, and I’ve challenged the mayor at Benalla in Victoria,” Cr Dobie said.

“I’ve already sent him a picture!”

A very happy Cr Tracy Dobie with former world champion Troy Bayliss.

Cr Dobie’s trip came after being challenged by WA’s City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts, who encouraged her Southern Downs counterpart to join her becoming the second mayor in Australia to ride superbike pillion.

The ride took part as part of Round Five of the superbike championship with Mayor Dobie relishing the challenge by Mayor Roberts and keen to get in on the superbike action. She said she’d never been one to shy away from a challenge or a little healthy competition.

SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie had a challenging and adventurous weekend. She took up a challenge and hurtled around Morgan Park on the back of a Superbike.

Admitting this morning that her “hands are sore” from hanging on, Councillor Dobie still sounded elated after her three-lap adventure on the back of a bike piloted by former World Champion Troy Bayliss.

“It is hard to put it into words,” she said of the experience at Morgan Park yesterday during a break in racing for the Australian Superbike Championships.

“I wasn’t anxious about it until the Superbikes started and I saw how fast they go down the track.

But Troy was so confident, calm and fun.”

Cr Dobie said she was a naturally brave person, and it helped that she had three-times world champion Bayliss as the rider.

“These guys grew up riding,” she said. “It would be a different matter if I was on the bike with a 10-yearold.”

Cr Dobie admitted to being a fan of bike racing in her thirties and forties and growing up with her brothers riding motorbikes.

“When I watched them, I didn’t realise how small the bikes are,” she said.

She said she’d been on BMWs big bikes and had been surprised that the superbikes were so powerful, but so small – cut down for speed.

Smart operator AN environmentally friendly change to operations at the Warwick Wastewater Treatment Plant has resulted in significant savings, according to the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Since July last year, the council has been working with Oceanic Bio to improve the treatment process at the treatment plant.

The project has involved the use of ‘EcoTabs’, an environmentally friendly proprietary product that keeps wastewater treatment plants running efficiently.

Southern Downs water and wastewater manager Tendekai Mapeza said that trialling the use of Eco-Tabs had been very successful.

“Using Eco-Tabs has improved the quality of our tertiary water,” he said.

“Not only that, but we have seen significant savings to the costs of our wastewater operations.

“An annual chemical saving of over $34,000 and electricity cost saving of over $11,000 has been achieved by using EcoTabs.”

Southern Downs wastewater treatment supervisor David Neal said that using the Ecotabs had reduced the need for frequent and costly operations at the plant.

“There’s been a reduction in bio solids being generated and there is also thicker sludge in the sedimentation tank,” Mr Neal said “It’s pretty clear that there has been an increase in the overall system efficiency.

“If the council continues to use this product, there will be reduced use of chemicals and electricity, and the recovery time of the bioreactor after sudden shock inflows from the catchments is also now eight times faster. Recovery used to take two hours before.”

Eco-tabs are simply dropped into the wastewater treatment tanks.

The tablets fall to the bottom of the tank and dissolve slowly over time to oxygenate the water, which then reacts with the toxic contaminants to turn them into non-toxic substances and remove odours.

THE sun shone this time as the horses ran and the fashionable were in their best outfits at Allman Park at the weekend for the annual Killarney Cup. It was a case of second time lucky as the cup, rescheduled after heavy rain in late June, was run in perfect sunshine.

Cr Dobie also acknowledged ratepayer concerns with the earlier issue of notices.

“During the 2016/17 budget deliberations, the council decided to bring the rates notice issue date forward to July, and it is our intention for future rates notices to be issued in July each year,” she said.

“The council does understand that some ratepayers may experience difficulty in paying this year’s rates by the discount due date.

“I would encourage those concerned to contact the council’s revenue team and discuss their options on a one-on-one basis with our staff.

Residents are being urged to pay their rates soon to claim their discount.

“The council is quite prepared to consider payment agreements, and anyone wishing to explore this option can drop into community contact centres, or call our 1300 number.”

THE deadline is almost here for the 2016/17 Southern Downs Council rates discount.

Payments must be made by 5pm on Friday 12 August for residents to claim the discount. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie said that almost 30 per cent of rates had so far been paid – but noted that many people choose to pay their rates closer to the discount deadline.

“We do remind people, particularly those paying by BPAY, to make sure their payment is received by the council by 5pm on the due date,” she said.

“Many financial institutions require a couple of days to process payments and send them to the council.

It’s 91 years of motoring

By TANIA PHILLIPS A HIGH-quality field of more than 200 cars spanning 91 years of motoring has entered for the 21st annual Historic Leyburn Sprints this weekend.

The entries range from a 1925 Austin roadster to a 2016 racing car called a Fly and represent every decade in between in an extraordinary cavalcade of motoring and motorsport history.

The round-the-houses time trials mark the 21st year since the community of the small Darling Downs village created an event to commemorate the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix on a disused wartime airstrip nearby.

Leyburn has become one of Australia’s longest-running and best-known grassroots racing events, with proceeds being returned to community organisations and projects.

Cars race one at a time against the clock in 55 classes covering sports, racing and touring cars. With seven runs per car scheduled across Saturday and Sunday, spectators will enjoy nonstop action.

Competition is expected to be closest for the outright fastest time awarded with the Col Furness Memorial Trophy - with nine starters in the prestigious Formula Libre racing car class including 2014-'15 winner Dean Amos in an English Gould specialist hillclimb car powered by a Judd Formula 1 V8 engine.

Amos’s usual close rival, 2012-'13 winner Warwick Hutchinson, won’t be here this year with his rotary-powered Van Diemen, but there will still be plenty of contenders.

Four Formula 3-based Dallara single-seaters, built in Italy, will be devastatingly fast around the one-kilometre course - on a conventional circuit, these cars are faster than V8 Supercars.

Danny “Showtime” Kenneally’s specially-built Nissan Skyvia will be a star of the tyre-smoking draft displays on both days at the Historic Leyburn Sprints.

A 1925 Austin Brooklands Special, driven by Russell Wright.

Drivers will be Vikki Paxton, Bruce McKenzie, Michael Von Rappard and Steve Woodbridge.

One of Australia’s most accomplished drivers, three-time Australian Gold Star Champion and Malaysian Grand Prix winner Paul Stokell, will make his second Leyburn appearance in a Radical sports car.

The outright field will be completed by Neil Lewis in the 1270cc Fly, George Brook in a Formula Renault and David Quelch in a Honda-powered Black Arrow.

More than 80 of the entries are for cars that did not contest last year’s event - meaning spectators will have plenty of exciting new machinery to follow.

New or old, the variety is fascinating. It covers everything from Holdens and Fords to Hillmans and Lotuses.

There are cheap cars and priceless ones, slow ones and fast ones.

For spectacle, it will be hard as always to miss Jamie Chant’s NASCARengined Falcon XY GT, Stuart Reid’s replica 1991 Audi quattro S1 Group B rally replica, or the regular flock of TransAm touring cars such as Mike Collins’ red Mustang.

Too fast and noisy? The field features two Goggomobils that might find it difficult to out-run a bicycle, but which nevertheless will be popular sights on-track.

Off-track, there’s plenty to see too.

Dam raises rates

I RECENTLY saw a bright yellow shiny car parked near the Taj Mahal, then I read it belongs to one of our councillors advertising as a councillor or her B&B. I think in the next couple of weeks we will see a lot of coloured photos of this councillor driving her sporty car around the Leyburn track. I understand this would probably be one of the reasons she took her council pay rise, as it is an expensive sport.

So I hope all the other councillors go to the sprints and get their photos taken and also we must not forget our superman CEO. I have been told the sprints are supposed to be a non-profit organisation. So would the mayor and CEO tell the ratepayers how much money the council puts towards the sprints such as labour, machinery and vehicles supplied by the council at the ratepayers' expense.

EMU Swamp Dam costs have increased rates for all ratepayers in the SDRC area. Any future costs will increase rates by up to $500 per annum for the average ratepayer, on top of extra water charges. Over 50 reports have been created in the last decade or more. These reports have shown that Emu Swamp Dam is not viable economically. The reports have shown that the dam is at the bottom of the list of possible choices for water supply to Stanthorpe township and Granite Belt irrigators.

Who is supporting the dam? The irrigators are not showing any support to pay up to $3,000 a megalitre, understandably. The ratepayers do not support rate rises when the council is already struggling financially. The only person supporting the dam is Councillor Pennisi.

Why are we choosing to put council support and costs behind yet another report? The only people who gain here are the ones paid to write the report.

Winery toasts a milestone CAMERATA of St John’s performance in the Swigmore Hall at Robert Channon Wines on Saturday 27 August will have special significance.

The performance by Queensland’s premier chamber orchestra at 5pm will be the 100th concert put on at the winery by Robert and Peggy Channon.

“Our concerts started in 2002 when we produced our Music Hall Show Victoria’s Ditties for the first time to raise money for Blue Care,” Robert Channon said.

“With Peggy at the piano and some wonderful local stars we belted out the old Victorian ballads with a lot of audience participation.

“From there we found ourselves putting on between six and 10 concerts a year and now in our 15th year we have reached performance number 100!

“In our Swigmore Hall, we have done opera with Opera Queensland, choral concerts with the Australian Voices, Canticum and the Birralee Blokes, orchestral concerts, recitals with strings, organs and harpsichords, brass band days, wind and brass quintets, piano recitals, jazz with the Caxton Street Jazz Band and, last year, Queensland’s first ever ophicleide concert.

“With the Granite Belt Choir we have put on the Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe and the first local performance of Karl Jenkins’ the Armed Man.

“There are just too many wonderful artists to name and thank but we are very grateful to them all for having performed here and helped us bring our music to the Granite Belt.”

Robert said Camerata was a world class string orchestra.

“Their sound will fill our Swigmore Hall,” he said.

“The concert, during which the audience will be voting for their favourites, promises to be a feast of best known classical pieces.

“This is to be a twilight concert

starting at 5pm and we will be putting on a bit of a party afterwards to celebrate our 100th.

“So dress up or dress down for the occasion but come along for some wonderful music and help us to celebrate this milestone.”

The concert is at Robert Channon Wines at Bradley Lane, Amiens, starting at 5pm on Saturday 27 August.

Tickets are $25 including a glass of wine after the concert.

Cunningham Polocrosse Club is also home to one of the best Under 21 lady polocrosse players in the world after Ryle Waugh and fellow club member Zac O’Leary starred in the Australian Intermediate Mixed Team competing in South Africa last month.

Number one for Tansey, Andrew Phillips scores in the Warwick V Tansey match.

Awards for individual positions were judged by all the players (men and ladies) and Waugh was judged the best number one from both the men and ladies teams.

She also won the Best Horse and Rider award and Champion Lady Player.

BUOYED by recent international and state representative selections, Cunningham Polocrosse Club put on a show of team strength at its second home carnival of the season over the weekend.

The carnival attracted 40 teams with many horses and riders at peak fitness as the season nears its end.

With only two more club carnivals in the South East Zone before the Queensland State Titles, the battle for club pride was fierce.

For the first time in three years, the host club made the A Grade final against Tansey 1.

Tansey 1, which has shown a lot of winning form recently, again showcased great horse power and riding skills to win the game with a final score of 23 to 7.

The Juniors showed that the sport of polocrosse has a strong future with many talented players taking to the field and in a repeat of last Cunningham carnival, the home juniors did the club proud.

Cunningham had traditionally been a club with a strong focus on juniors and that was evident in the results.

In the A Grade Junior final Cunningham 1 (Jnr) beat Warwick (Jnr) 14 to 10 and in the closely matched B Grade Junior final Cunningham 2 (Jnr) beat a combined junior team 9 to 8.

THE TAFE Queensland South West’s Agricultural and Rural teachers pride themselves in knowing their apples (and quadbikes and resources).

This month Linking Communication and Safety with Resources and Infrastructure Faculty director, Debbie Jackson was asked to give advice on basic safety rules for all members of the family when they are working around the property or travelling in a rural area.

“Safety covers such a broad area in the rural industry,” Debbie explained.

“But, some of the key points you should discuss with your family include communication, basic safety supplies, the safe use of equipment, what to do during breakdowns, and dealing with different weather conditions.

“Communication: Set ground rules around letting someone know when and where you are going somewhere, how you are travelling, and when you should be back by.

“Encourage having a message board that the family use to put details on, just in case the family member they’ve told isn’t around should concerns about your whereabouts start to arise.

“When working on the property make use of technology like mobile phones if you have service, two way radios or, in particularly isolated areas, have an EPIRB or satellite phone.”

She said basic safety supplies were very important.

Warmer days on the way WITH sea temperatures in the Tropical Pacific sitting in the neutral range still, it appears the El Nino/La Nina event for the coming season may stay the same.

This will give the eastern parts of Australia average rainfall and warmer daytime temperatures.

The past month has seen mild winter temperatures over the Southern Downs and Granite Belt with only a few mornings of frost recorded.

Some rainfall and the occasional storm have been reported during the last week or so of last month.

More falls are forecast in the next few days with the Southern Downs having the chance of a storm developing today (Thursday) as a surface trough moves through from the southern regions.

The next month appears to be following the same pattern with only mild temperature forecast.

After a month of some good rainfall in some areas, the next month looks to be a bit drier with only low fall forecast for the region.

Rain associated with cold front events may develop over south-east Queensland on 1519 August, 21-25 August, and 30 August to 3 September, with some light falls forecast near the beginning of next month on 9-13 September.

Cash to kill WALLANGARRA landholders under siege from one of Queensland’s worst rabbit infestations could benefit from financial rebates under a co-ordinated rabbit control operation.

The Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Barrier Fence protects high value cropping lands in the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley from rabbits.

However these pest animals are having significant impacts on agriculture outside the barrier fence in southern parts of the Southern Downs region.

In a bid to wage war on these rabbits, Southern Downs Regional Council is joining forces with the Queensland MurrayDarling Committee (QMDC) to offer incentives to landholders in Wallangarra to encourage participation in a program of coordinated rabbit control works.

Wallangarra was put forward by the council as one of the national release sites for the new strain of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), the K5 strain, which is set to be released nationally next year.

Pre-release monitoring has been conducted by Biosecurity Queensland over the past 18 months.

While the release is awaited, a program of mechanical control works will begin which will attract the rebates.

Southern Downs Manager Environmental Services Tim O’Brien said letters have been sent to all Wallangarra landholders about the financial rebates

which would be made available, but stressed that the rebates would apply in two stages.

“Landholders that undertake approved works will be able to claim back 30 per cent of the cost of control,” he said.

“Approved works will involve mechanical ripping of rabbit warrens, as this has been proven as the most effective and lasting rabbit control technique.

“In the first stage, only land located to the east of the Wallangarra golf course will be considered eligible at this time.

“This is because any mechanical-type control work undertaken within the immediate area of the release site, prior to the release, may hinder the effectiveness and spread of the K5 virus.

“However a second stage of similar rebates will be offered to other Wallangarra landholders for control works that are timed to occur immediately after the K5 virus release, which will be in March 2017,” he said.

QMDC’s Regional Pest Technical Officer Dr Dave Berman said the Wallangarra township area was considered to have one of the heaviest infestations in Queensland.

“Wallangarra is a source area for populations further afield,” he said.

“Genetic studies have shown rabbits that have breached the Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Barrier fence share DNA with Wallangarra rabbits.”

However, Dr Berman high-

lighted that the news was not entirely grim.

“The population is confined to a reasonably small area and effective control is achievable.

“The K5 strain of RHDV is not expected to provide 100 per cent control of rabbits which is why further mechanical control work is needed to achieve comprehensive and lasting control and offering financial rebates to landholders is one way to support this outcome,” he said.

Studies have shown that they can significantly alter the composition of native plant communities through selective browsing.

Very active August for seniors IT’S on for young and old this August, with ‘Seniors Month’ on in the Southern Downs offering up numerous events and activities right across the region, in celebration of the contributions that older people make to our community.

Enjoying company at Akooramak. was completed in 1978. The first stage was partially funded by the Commonwealth and State governments with a significant amount raised locally. Stage two was fully Commonwealth funded.

Stage three, a jointly-funded project between the Warwick Benevolent Society, Commonwealth Government and State Government, provided a 30bed high care wing. This stage was commenced in 1981 and was completed and opened in March 1982.

The society became an incorporat-

ed body on 2 January 1989.

The Warwick Benevolent Society Inc aims to provide quality residential and community aged care services. It remains a ‘not for profit’ organisation overseen by a Management Committee with day to day administration by the Chief Executive Officer.

The society started the provision of Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs) in August 1995 to 10 recipients. This service was extended to an additional six recipients in July 1997.

AKOORAMAK Care of Older Persons offers traditional but contemporary residential and community aged care services to the people of Warwick and District.

Director of Nursing Kym Farrell said Akooramak focussed on providing quality care of the elderly and meeting their specific holistic needs.

Built in 1972, Kym said Akooramak, at 267-269 Wood Street, Warwick, had compassionate caring, respectful and dedicated staff who aimed to provide the best care possible for the region’s older citizens.

Although only built in the ‘70s, Akooramak has a long history dating back to the foundation of the non-denominational body the Warwick Benevolent Society, in 1876.

The objects of the society at that time were principally to afford relief in cases of distress and sickness that could not be sent to hospital. It has therefore been over 130 years that people from the local community, in a voluntary capacity, have been serving the community through their work with the society.

The society’s first residential facility was Mill House, which was converted into accommodation for 12 aged ladies. This was in 1915, so it was understandable that in 1967, instead of undertaking major repairs, renovations or extensions, it was decided to replace Mill House with a modern new facility.

Each of the significant areas of the residential care facility have been named in recognition of the society’s life-members: Esme and Ken McCulloch, Les and Millie Northway, Hilda Bryant, and Bernice McKillop, together with long time honorary administrator/treasurer ‘Bin’ Bromley.

Effective July 2016, the residential care facility has been significantly refurbished and is comprised of 100 single ensuited rooms, with all but 10 air-conditioned.

BY the time this edition reaches your table, I will have been on the road for a couple of days on the annual Wanderers cricket pilgrimage this year to South Western Queensland. The boys from Warwick will have almost settled into the required routine, and my heart rate may just about have come back to normal after the excitement of the Women’s Rugby Sevens Gold medal game on Tuesday morning. What a great game and a huge thrill for team Caslick in Rio to support undoubtedly the number one player in the sport - Charlotte Caslick.

The 22-year-old now gold medal Olympian is the toast of the nation following the sensational win by the Pearls over the Kiwis. However, for keen readers of Spin we have been following Charlotte’s journey from a teenage Touch Football seas nation all the way to Rio. Among her cheer squad in Rio were aunts Leah Costanzo (Caslick), Jamie Caslick, grandmother Beryl Caslick her parents Don and Tracy and brothers Sam and Zac. With a strong Statnhorpe connection through her aunt Leah (herself a top class shooter) and father Don who played cricket for Stanthorpe in his younger days, there were plenty of Stanthorpians like myself glued to the television on Tuesday morning watching four years of planning and hard work come to fruition.

Prior to the gold medal game, Leah described the atmosphere as electric nervewracking and exciting. It is now well recorded how coach Tim Walsh headhunted this group of girls the majority of which are Queenslanders. Many had never even touched a football but were turning heads in their preferred sports of hockey, athletics, basketball or in Charlotte’s case touch football.

Two years ago, the group turned professional and went into this game with the weight of expectation on their shoulders.

Charlotte who has twice been nominated as the best Women’s seven Player in the World turned in a top class performance throughout the tournament. Wendell Sailor declaring her performance in the gold medal game akin to any JT master class - now that is high praise.

Here at Spin we’re thrilled to have watched and reported as this remarkable journey unfolded all the way to Rio. And as they say that is “Gold”.

- Casey ANOTHER MONTHLY MEDAL STANTHORPE golfer Darryl Boekholt collected another monthly medal last Saturday in the Stanthorpe competition sponsored by Gino’s Floor Coverings. Boekholt played a steady front nine but rushed home in the back nine with one over par off the stick for his round. His score of nett 67 giving him a two-shot lead over the field. After a three-way countback, Ian Harvey was declared the runner-up with a score of nett 69.

Lorraine Evans made it two wins in two weeks when she returned best nett of 70 for the ladies medal. Kay Webb claimed runner-up spot with nett 75.

Dylan Barraclough and Lyn Ludlow returned the best gross scores of 68 and 97 in their respective competitions.

Putting honours were awarded to Greg Fraser with 25 putts for the round. In the Ladies’ competition, Lorraine Ludlow had least putts in the event - 28 for the round.

Kev Rowling collected the pin at 3/12 and Matt Waterworth held the pin at 17.

Lyn Ludlow had best approach at 17. Pro-pins went the way of Rob Reeves at 1/10 and Grant Howard collected both 5/14 and 9/18. There was a four-way share for the birdies nest and the run down in the men’s competition went to scores of 70 and better. Madeline Jarman collected the run down for ladies with nett 76.

This Saturday the club has scheduled a single stableford sponsored by Madeline Jarman. Tee off from 11am and a time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse.

PURCELL COLLECTS MEDAL JAMIE Purcell proved too good in play for the Wallangarra Monthly medal on Saturday.

Steven Hampstead played consistently to place second. Hampstead, McMillan and K. Williams all claimed pin shots with Hampstead nailing the approach as well.

This Saturday is a single stableford and members are reminded that there will be a general meeting at 10am prior to tee off.

UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS FOR GATEBALL PLAYERS faced unpleasant and difficult conditions in Friday’s Gateball games. Cold but undeterred a good turnout of players took up both courts.

On court one, Effey Russell, Val Fancourt and Pat Schnoor, playing the white balls, took on Margaret Dickenson, John Draper and Carol Verwey. White recorded a narrow win 11-10 win in the first game. In game two, it was even closer with the two teams tying at eight-all. The White team grabbed a second win in the next game with a 12-10 score line. Margaret Dickenson and the red team members got on the board in the final game, scoring a 16-12 win.

On the second court, Grace Howard, Jenny Tunbridge, Les Williams, and Joy Newman, played the White balls against the Red team of Andrea Denkewitz, Bill Golding and Heather Widderick. The first game was tied at 13 points at the end of regulation time. However, the White team had their final shot to play shot. In a thrilling finish, Les Williams managed to hit his ball onto the centre peg to secure a two-point victory for his team.

The White team went on to win the next game, 11 - 6, with some good play from both Williams and Joy Newman.

After the break, the Red team came back in winning form, taking a 12-10 win. Heather Widderick executed a great ’slider’ in the last game, while Golding ‘sparked’ all the white balls off the court in the third game.

Gateball players are now spoilt for choice with games now also played on Saturday afternoons at 1.30pm. Anyone is welcome to come and try. The court is located at the Golf complex on Amosfield Road.

Conditions on Saturday afternoon were much better as Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dickenson and Val Shepherd teamed up against Les Williams and Bill Golding. Playing the White balls, Williams and Golding scored a 13-10 win over the ladies red team.

The tables were turned in the next game with the red team scoring a narrow one-point win.

In game three, the White team scored a convincing 13-8 win. In the final game of the afternoon, Andrea, Margaret and Val fought back to win by just one point. Les Williams was the most consistent player of the day.

IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR SPORTERS

Rose city fighters performed well in Bundaberg last weekend.

CONDITIONS were ideal for a hit on Sunday and after a week off there was a good field at Sporters on Sunday.

Danny McAuliffe played well to score a welldeserved and long-awaited win. Runner-up was Chook. The run-downs went to Bob Watts and Terry Byrnes with Paul Armstrong scoring the Best Gross.

Jim McPherson picked up the Pin Shot on the third, however the Pro Pin went a begging. Not so the meat trays which were won by Terry Byrnes and Ray Thorn.

Sporters will be back on the course on Sunday morning with tee off between 8am and 8.30am.

Same time tee-off next Sunday between 8am and 8.30am. Remember visitors are always most welcome.

SUCCESS FOR McMAHON ROSE City boxer Jacko McMahon won his third consecutive Wide Bay Title on Saturday night in Bundaberg when he outclassed Kiwa King from Albert Boxing Gym in Brisbane. McMahon outboxed King with movement and long left hand jabs to win by an unanimous decision.

In other results, Jake Wylie fought Sam Cameron Hands current Qld title holder in the 60kg division and a veteran of over 60 fights. In a bout where nothing was left in the ring there were some impressive punches from both boxers. It was a fight that could have gone either way - the eight count was put on both boxers at different stages. The final judges’ decision went the way of Sam Cameron Hands.

Charlie Sweedman was the first boxer up to represent the Rose City Boxing Club and fought Nathan Keioskie from Bells Boxing Club in a bout of three two-minute rounds. It was a tough hard fight and in a points deskin Keioskie got the win.

ASSOCIATION CROQUET NEWS PAT Schnoor arrived in the mood to play well in last week’s competition, and with Effey Russell as her partner the pair scored a 23 - 15 win over Val Shephard and Andrea Denkewitz. Schnoor was certainly on fire and had a tremendous break of 10 in the game.

In the other games, Grace Howard teamed with Heather Widderick, and the pair managed a tough 19-17 win over Margaret Dickenson. Jenny Tunbridge and Carol Verwey pegged out with 26 to win their game against Joy Newman and Val Richardson 19.

CLEARED FOR LANDING THE Hayne plane was cleared for landing last week on runway one at the Gold Coast and made a successful touchdown after stopovers in LA, Fiji Sevens via London, a brief dalliance with France and the Catalans and an obviously disappointing attempted landing in the Eels pond.

And so J. Hayne is now a Titan and the circus rolled into the Cbus stadium on Sunday along with 18000 fans in what was a cross between the second coming and the return of the prodigal son if you believed some.

Whether or not you are a Hayne fan, you must admit he is a class athlete. After two years away from rugby league, he made his much-anticipated

entrance into the game on Sunday after 20 minutes, and it was as though he had never left, well almost. His timing may have been a little rusty but his tackling technique, running, kicking and ability to read the play were close to spot on.

What I did not like was the lack of enthusiasm he showed for his new club in his post- signing press conference. While Titans CEO Graham Annesley may have wondered if the club’s multimillion signing was going to crash land after that press conference, he would have been far more relaxed I imagine after Sunday’s game despite the Titans 24-14 loss to the Warriors.

Named to play five eighth this week, all eyes will again be on the Hayne plane when the Titans take on the Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday. This game is a big test for both sides who are fighting for their spot in the eight with just four rounds to be played before the finals.

While the media circus will surround Hayne, the results of many of the games in round 23 could have serious finals repercussions and on many forlorn tipsters.

We kick off tonight with the Doggies and Eagles. Both have been in great form of late, and this will be a tough game. The tenacious Dogs will be out to cement their spot in the top four and that should be incentive enough for them to get the points.

Friday night is a danger game for the Broncos who take on the Eels. The Broncos turned the corner last week with a much-needed win and face a team with nothing to play for and nothing to lose at Suncorp. The Broncos need this win, and I for one will be hoping they are on song and back in the groove.

The return of Greg Inglis from suspension seemed to spark the Bunnies, and they all but caused the upset of the round last week taking the Storm to golden point. A tough outing for them this week as they travel across the ditch to take on the Warriors at Mt Smart. Playing to their potential, they could win this but the Warriors are one of three teams in the hunt for that eighth spot and will be hard to toss at home.

The Dragons host the Sharks at Jubilee in a local derby and while the Sharks winning streak came to a sticky end last weekend, they should be too strong for an underperforming Dragons.

The Knights host the Panthers at Hunter Stadium and cannot buy a win. In round 22 they played well against the Bulldogs but were out muscled in the end. The Panthers looked the goods on Monday night in their win over the Roosters and while everyone is waiting for the Knights to notch up a win, I doubt it will come here.

The Roosters host the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon and the NQlanders will be chasing a win here to try and force their way back into the top four. Thurston will be better for the run last week.

Kyle Feldt returns but Jake Granville is out. Cowboys should win this.

In the game of the round, the Raiders host Melbourne Storm on Monday night in a muchanticipated clash. The Raiders are flying but for me Melbourne will be too clinical, too good.

Local Sport MORE CHOICES AS the popularity of golf croquet grows, there are now more options for players. Players now have the choice of session on Wednesday morning or Thursday.

Despite the bitterly cold conditions on both days last week, both sessions drew good numbers. One visitor called, remarking “you lot are crazy playing in this weather”.

On Wednesday two groups of doubles were played, with one player in each group playing two balls. In the first game, John and Marion Castles paired up and played well. They played well and were narrowly beaten by just one point by Shirley Page’s two ball score of 11. Page had the top hoop score of seven.

Justin Liddy and Dianne Wren teamed up to play and won a tight game 13-12. Diane Wren top scored in this game with eight hoops.

In the second round of game, John Castle and Dianne Wren scored a 13-7 win over Justin Liddy and Marion Castle. Wren was again in good form, top scoring with seven hoops. In the other game, Elaine Brown played two balls to score a narrow 8-7 win over Shirley Page and Liz Ellway.

On Thursday, players welcomed a new starter Joan Potter and Elaine Brown put her through her paces in an instructional game. The experienced John and Judy Lock scored a good win over Justin and Marian Castles in a doubles game.

In the reverse games Justin Castle partnered newcomer Joan Potter in a game against John Castles who played two balls. Castles proved too strong, scoring eight hoops.

Marian Castle and Elaine Brown scored a 7-5 win over Judy Lock in a short game after play was cut short due to the conditions.

COWBOYS DRAW BUT STILL ON TOP A 31-ALL draw was the result at the end of the Cowboys round 20 clash against Brothers at Fr Ranger Oval on Saturday, however the Cowboys still sit at the top of the TRL table.

The visitors were bolstered by the return of Nick Patterson and stunned the home side with an easy four pointer in the fourth minute of the game when Adam Watterson scored.

Stunned into action, Warwick hit back two minutes later when centre Joe Fuimaono charged Brothers line and scored. A try from fullback Craig Donn took the Cowboys to a 10-6 lead before Brothers took control of the game scoring tries at will. Tries to Michael Witt, ZC Loxley, Nick Patterson and Matthew Cottee had the visitors holding a commanding 30-14 lead with 25 minutes left in the game.

The Cowboys dug deep and showed why they are leading the TRL competition. Inspirational tries from Matt Marshall and Ty Gardner lifted the Cowboys intensity as they got within striking distance. Sam Broomhall and Paul Cantwell scored as Warwick levelled the scores at 30-all.

With their season on the line, Brothers half back Matthew Witt looked to have wrapped up a win for Brothers when he slotted a field goal to give his side a one-point advantage with four minutes left in the game.

Jamie Abbas hit back with a field goal for the Cowboys to lock up the scores at 31 all in a quality game.

It was a thrilling game full of intensity, and both sides forced to defend their line for long periods. Brothers William O’Grady, was named Hutchies player of the round. Brock Croft, Joe Fuimaono and Matt Marshall had excellent games and kept the Cowboys in the game.

Tenterfield Tigers regained the Caldwell Cup with a making win over Stanthorpe Texas.

In Reserve Grade Warwick scored a 46-12 win and the Warwick Under 18 side had another win, defeating Burnett Blues 32-18.

In the second division game, Brothers had a 32-14 win over Warwick.

With just two rounds of fixtures left, Warwick hold a one-point lead over Pittsworth. This weekend in a danger game they take on fourth-placed Souths who suffered a 40-32 loss to Highfields last weekend.

Crowd numbers were almost double last year’s numbers for the event.

On the track there were plenty of big names in action across the weekend, however it was Golburn rider Troy Herfoss who led the way. Based on the Gold Coast, Herfoss rides for the Crankt Honda Racing team and showed all of his ability and class to secure pole position in both races on the weekend going on to win both events at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship.

In a thrill for the big crowd, Troy Bayliss a former World championship winner acted as team boss for Ducati at the weekend and made himself available to many of the fans over the course of the weekend.

During the lunch break, some lucky competition winners were treated to a spin behind Troy Bayliss, Shaun Giles and Steve Martin. SDRC Mayor Tracy Dobie accepted a challenge from the Mayor of Wanneroo in Western Australia and had her first taste of superbikes.

Organisers were thrilled at the turnout and support for the event.

LITTLE JOY FOR WATTLES THERE was no relief for Wattles supporters in Round 20 as they watched the home side go down to Goondiwindi 30-14 last weekend. After a great season in 2015, Wattles have been decimated by injury this season. The Boars executed their pays well and consistently won the ruck in the game.

There was better news for supporters with Wattles claiming a 52-20 win in Reserve Grade and a 38all draw in the under-18 game. This weekend Wattles take on Valleys.

KILLARNEY CUP MEETING TAKE TWO DALBY-TRAINED Le Max took out Saturday’s rescheduled Killarney Cup. Organisers were pleased with the crowd who turned out in numbers for the annual Killarney Day which was cancelled several weeks ago due to the state of the track. The Max Smith trained eight-year-old ridden by Cecily Eaton narrowly got the money in the main event ahead of Oakey visitors Hashtag Yolo and Our Clarky. The winner started at the good odds of $8 while the favourite Sam De Hero finished last in the big field.

The meeting opened with a win to Wehrman in the Killarney Coop Class B. Trained at Beaudesert by Ben Robinson, the Commands gelding ran home strongly for a 1.3 length win over the more fancied Turkana and Newcastle Dancer.

Race Two also went the way of the visitors when the Kevin kemp-trained Kel’s Shadow provided claiming apprentice Nicholas Keal with a winner. Sunshine Coast trainer John Zeilke made a successful raid on Allman Park with Stryking Stunnah in the third event the Shirl and Sandy’s Class 3 plate over 1200 metres.

The three-year-old filly put the writing on the wall with a fifth placing at her previous start on the Sunshine Coast. With the claim of apprentice Corey Bayliss, punters sent the filly out $2.70 favourite.

The meeting closed with the running of the Warwick Credit Union Open Handicap over the 1200 metre journey and was won by Toowoomba Galloper Smooth Talker.

TIGERS SERVE UP A MAULING THE Tenterfield Tigers bounced back from a loss in the BRL Patrons cup to trounce Stanthorpe Texas on Saturday at Rugby League Park. In the annual Caldwell Cup game, Stanthorpe Texas bolted out of the boxes to take a surprising 10-nil lead early in the game, however it was a shortlived moment as the Tigers rumbled into gear and embarked on a scoring rampage. When the final siren sounded, they lead 102-10.

The big win gives the Tigers much-needed points for any away against rivals Inglewood and also saw the Caldwell Cup returned to Tenterfield.

It was another big day for the Tenterfield with the undefeated Tigerettes also claiming another big win, outclassing their opposition 40-4.

The Tigers head to Charlie Andrews Oval this weekend for the final round of the BRL for a game they must win decisively to retain their spot at the top of the competition table.

In the other BRL game played at McIntyre Oval, Inglewood proved too strong for Killarney and notched up an 84-12 win. Full back Matt West had another outstanding game and was name dual players player with Ryan Donovan who has come back from an injury that many thought would finish his career.

The Roosters final fixture game of the season will be against Stanthorpe Texas, and they will be hoping for a big win to topple the Tigers off the top of the table.

Kathleen and Mick. Jeff got highest score of 156 in C-grade and Kyle got high peg of 123 in B-grade.

This Saturday coming, there is a social game against Stanthorpe RSL Darts. There is still few spots left for people who wanna play.

Southern Cross bowls Coming up this weekend, the Gladfield boys will be sponsoring their annual bowls day on Saturday 13 August, starting at 1pm.

This is always a popular day and social bowlers are welcome to come along and join in the fun. Also during the afternoon the SDRC councillors will be attending the club as a part of the Community Grants Project launch for the bench seating replacement. It would be nice to see all our members attend in uniform.
