By GEORGIA WESTGARTH JANINE Greening wants to ensure some of the most vulnerable in Australia’s society never get forgotten.

Founder of the Forget me Not Foundation and a Casey resident, Ms Greening has been an advocate for victims of crime since 2005 – and she is the reason behind the Casey Council’s push for a Royal Commission to investigate the abuse and neglect of people in disability care.

Councillor Amanda Stapledon, whose son Pete is looked after in disability care, seconded Ms Greening’s request in council, and The City of Casey will write to the Prime Minister and state premiers to seek their support for a Royal Commission. “There needs to be stronger legal protections for people with a disability, mandatory reporting and zero tolerance,� Cr Stapledon said.

Ms Greening is known for speaking out after her mother was brutally raped and murdered in front of her disabled brother in 2000, and is passionate about giving a voice to victims of crime.

In light of a recent parliamentary inquiry into abuse in disability services, which made 49 recommendations for reform, Ms Greening said: “It’s the first time I’ve tried for a Royal Commission, but it is the right time. “We need to get it right because we’ve had so many inquiries into abuse in disability care and so many recommendations – it’s a waste of time, because nothing gets done,� she said.

The inquiry found abuse in disability services is widespread in Victoria.

The Family and Community Development Committee heard abuse took many forms, including neglect, physical and sexual assault and financial, verbal and emotional abuse.

Her brother, Peter, 62, who has been in care since their mother was murdered, has been assaulted in care. “I nearly lost Peter twice because of carers’ incompetence around medications,� Ms Greening said. “The United Nations has human rights for disabilities – why are we allowed to have people being treated like this?�

Cr Stapledon mirrored Ms Greening’s sentiments. “From a personal point of view I’ve had numerous friends whose children with a disability have suffered neglect, abuse and death of their children while in disability facilities and care. “I placed my son into respite on one occasion and they told me they

Ms Greening said an overarching, collective response such as a Royal Commission would be able to deliver a system that could be rolled out across Australia. “While these inquiries go on there are more unexplained deaths, more people are being abused and neglected in care,� she said.

Holding back tears, Ms Greening said: “My mother before she died asked me to never forget my brother. “We have to make sure it’s a safe environment for people with a disability to be in – we owe it to them, to the ones that have suffered and the ones it’s happening to now, we owe it to them.�

Bedroom hit in rubbish blast OCCUPANTS of a Hampton Park home were woken up when rubbish in their front yard was blown up and shattered their front bedroom window.

The explosion and subsequent fire at an address on Ellaswood Court was extinguished by the CFA on Monday 8 August about 1.15am.

Police and firefighters arrived at the scene to find a resident trying to put out the burning rubbish with a bucket of water.

Police believe an accelerant was used to start the fire.

The residents told police they saw a couple of people walking away from the scene.

Casey police and CFA are conducting an investigation into the explosion.

Highway closed for investigations

Hot horsey homes SPRING racing in Cranbourne never looked so neat, with two new on-course stables and a fast sand training track opened for use at the Cranbourne Turf Club.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula unveiled the first stage of the $6.5 million stables complex and a refurbished training track at the Cranbourne Training Complex on Wednesday 10 August.

CEO at the Turf Club Neil Bainbridge said refurbishment would

allow the complex to cater for the “increasing demand from trainers”.

The stables complex involves five separate sites and when completed will house almost 250 horses, with tie-up stalls and a mezzanine floor viewing platform overlooking the training tracks.

The remaining two sites are scheduled to be completed in October.

Around 275 horses use the track each day and the extensive wear caused the surface to break down,

making it unsuitable for training and unusable during wet weather.

The new track provides a safer and more forgiving surface, and improved drainage allows trainers to carry out track work in most weather conditions.

The State Government has contributed almost $1 million to the complex, courtesy of its Victorian Racing Industry Fund, with the remaining funding provided by the Cranbourne Turf Club.

The government has also pro-

vided $120,000 towards the rebuild of the fast sand track, with Racing Victoria contributing $100,000 and the club providing $20,000.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said: “The Cranbourne Training Complex is vital for the Victorian racing industry and we are proud to be contributing to this important project.”

“These works will set a new standard for on-course stabling and restore the sand track to optimal condition.”

Apex-style brazen crime is all over Casey

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SUBURBS right across Casey felt the crime wave over the weekend.

Cannons Creek, Cranbourne West and Hampton Park were just some of the locations that ’apex’ style offences were committed on Sunday 7 August.

In the wink of an eye, a woman’s Ford Futura was stolen right from under her nose as she ran inside to get something she had forgotten.

The Cranbourne West woman started her car in her garage on Raisell Road at 5am on Sunday, and while she let it warm up she opened the garage door.

As she ducked in to her home,

her burgundy Ford was snatched and driven away.

Police later attended the scene, but her car is yet to be recovered.

Just an hour later at 6am, a car went up in flames in the sleepy coastal village of Cannons Creek.

A stolen black Kia Rio sedan was set alight at the jetty car park in Irene Parade by unknown offenders.

Police told the News the car was completely engulfed in flames and destroyed.

Cannons Creek CFA extinguished the blaze and no other damage was done to surrounding property.

The male victim then went to the front door and security door and observed the offenders, one of who was armed with a pistol.

He ran deeper inside the house, locked all the doors and called the police.

The offenders were described as Caucasian, and in their twenties.

One was reported to be wearing a grey flannelette shirt and dark pants and a Triton or Hilux utility was used in the attempted burglary.

Multiple police units attended the scene, but were unable to track the three offenders.

The offenders didn’t steal anything from the home.

An investigation into the car fire is ongoing.

Earlier on Sunday around 3.30am, a family in Hampton Park braced themselves inside their home, as a gang of three offenders tried to smash their way inside.

The Ivan Crescent home had its electric front gate forced open by the gang before they attempted the same treatment on the roller door.

Significant damage was done to both the gate and garage door, and and the ensuing sound woke up the occupants.

SOUTHBOUND lanes on the South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne will be closed for about two hours this morning (Tuesday) during a Major Collision Unit investigation of a two-vehicle crash.

A 25-year-old woman received serious injuries during the “low-impact” crash near Thompsons Road about 1.40pm on 8 August, a Victoria Police spokesman said.

According to Ambulance Victoria, she was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. A woman in her thirties was assessed by paramedics at the scene and was not hospitalised.

A VicRoads spokeswoman said southbound lanes were expected to be closed until 10am.

She said southerly drivers could divert onto Thompsons Road, then Narre-Warren Road and re-enter the South Gippsland Highway south of Cranbourne.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S been the site of two fatalities and 17 crashes in the past five years, and now funding has been secured to build a roundabout at the notorious intersection at Pearcedale.

The State Government will pour $6.2 million into the Western Port Highway and Robinsons Road intersection to build a dual-lane roundabout.

It’s been more than a year since the death of 19-yearold Olivia Steadman-Meconi prompted a massive plea from locals for a roundabout to be built.

The planned roundabout will remove the problem of motorists

failing to give way at the intersection and failing to select safe gaps in traffic when crossing onto the Highway.

The upgrade will address the history of crashes that all involved vehicles colliding while travelling through the intersection.

Interim safety improvements were made to the intersection, which included banning turn movements, but it didn’t stop everyone.

The News reported on incidents of road users disobeying the interim measures in September last year. Planning work on the roundabout is expected to start this year, with construction

due to start in 2017.

Member for Hastings Neale Burgess said the roundabout will stand as a tribute to those who have tragically lost their lives at this intersection.

“The Robinsons Road site is one of the most dangerous intersections in the south-east, so it will be great to see this project take shape,” Mr Burgess said.

“Our local communities have won a great victory and should be very proud of their achievement. They fought long and hard to try and prevent any further tragedies from occurring at this intersection.”

A car to that description was found burnt out at Kurll Park Reserve on Brundrett Drive in Narre Warren North.

CFA attended and extinguished the car fire.

IN JUST 40 minutes, staff at two different drive-thru bottle shops were held at gunpoint in two terrifying armed robberies.

On a weekend where crime was rampant, two drive-thru robberies targeted the Lynbrook Hotel and the Central Hotel in Beaconsfield.

The two male offenders were armed with what was described as a meat clever or tomahawk and a small black firearm when they entered the Lynbrook Hotel on the South Gippsland Highway at 6.20pm on Sunday 7 August.

The men drove through, got out of their old blue Honda Integra and threatened the attendant behind the counter with their weapons.

They fled the scene with cash, cigarette lighters and alcohol. Soon after, the duo drove to the Central Hotel in Beaconsfield in the same car.

Again both males got out of the car, and one male swung the tomahawk around before demanding cash and alcohol.

The duo managed to pull off both armed robberies without being caught by police, and are still on the run.

I WOULD like to respond to Doris of Berwick’s letter ‘Lack of infrastructure’ (News, 28 July).

The author raises some valid concerns about planning for appropriate infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing city. Council understands these concerns, and is committed to (and has a proven track record of) adequately planning for growth with excellent infrastructure Alira at Berwick is covered by the Berwick Waterways Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) and Berwick Waterways Development Contribution Plan under the Metropolitan Planning Authority.

The PSP identifies a vision for the precinct as a new residential community that will integrate with the existing neighbourhood, and provide future residents with opportunities to live, work, shop and play locally.

Developers must submit plans within the PSP framework, which considers the road network and impacts on traffic flow, public transport links and pedestrian paths, as well as land for residential, employment, schools and community facilities.

Council continues to advocate to the State Government for investments into public transport and an improved arterial road network as many of the main roads surrounding the new estates are not council’s responsibility.

Socially speaking Poor state of emergency at hospital: The system wouldn’t be so stressed either if people didn’t go to emergency for everyday stuff like colds, flus and issues that aren’t an as the word says an EMERGENCY! If you are referred by your GP or have a genuine emergency no worries you need to be there but been to ED plenty and seen people and been told by nurses that a lot of cases are people that don’t need emergency which clogs the system when they can attend many 24 hours GP clinics around! People are just as much to blame with the stess on this hospital!

I was there most of the day but couldn’t fault the nurses or doctor who saw me and if there was to be a wait for anything kept me informed. The staff are clearly under pressure to keep clearing beds but I felt they were thorough in treating me. The department needs funding to run smoothly, it is a hospital right in the middle of a huge growth corridor. The government needs to help with the money needed for equipment or even to just be able to employ more staff. I wouldn’t want to be an emergency department staff member, that’s for sure.

Demand for the News has gone international with members of the Hampton Park Centre of the Victorian School of Languages asking if the newspaper could also be printed in French.

A member of the school contacted the News after Daniel Andrews visited last month but lamented that she had to go elsewhere to read the story in her mother tongue.

She pointed out that the Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Dandenong areas have a high proportion of Francophiles who would enjoy reading news stories to brush up on their language skills.

But the good news is that the News is available in not only French but a wide variety of languages from Afrikaans to Zulu.

THERE was something lost in translation in a Dandenong courtroom recently.

A Burmese interpreter - without qualifications - was reluctantly given the go-ahead to help an accused man on 8 August.

The interpreter assured the judge that he’d worked at courts for years, but seemed all at sea and strangely silent during the trial.

As the case meandered into lunchtime, the increasingly exasperated judge repeatedly prompted the interpreter to speak.

She had noted earlier - and rather presciently - that there was a reason why interpreters required qualifications.

“Sir, you just have to say what’s been said in court. If you can do that, that would be very helpful.”

At one stage the accused bypassed his aide and spoke his case to the judge himself in broken English.

“Can we make a note on this?” the judge asked her clerk.

DANDENONG Magistrates’ Court was sent back to the Stone Age when its computer systems crashed all day on 8 August.

As judges were forced to hand-write their sentences and orders, one quipped that they had gone back to “chisels and stone - and white-out”.

Magistrate Sharon McRae said the $1400-plus clean-up costs claimed by Casey seemed expensive.

“At the end of the day, there’s a large amount of rubbish in a public area.

“We have to send a message that you can’t be doing it.”

Dan’s Diggers faced a maximum of $70,000 for the offence. It was fined $1000 without conviction.

Casey Council was awarded $2500 in costs.

The council stated to Star News that it had issued more than $100,000 in fines for dumping in the past 18 months, but was spending more than $850,000 a year to collect and dispose 3000 tonnes of illegal rubbish.

Mayor Sam Aziz said the money could be better spent on roads, parks and community buildings.

“While the fines do not come close to covering the

clean-up costs, these penalties send a clear message that illegal dumping will not be tolerated in Casey.”

Cr Aziz said Dan’s Diggers could have properly disposed of the rubbish at a private landfill for $554.

Casey’s waste and recycling manager Michael Jansen said the council had done 1761 dumped rubbish inspections and issued 93 related infringements in 2015-'16.

Mr Jansen said the council was proactively targeting typical dumping sites such as isolated rural or semi-rural roads, building sites and new estates.

“People can dispose of their waste correctly by using a transfer station or reputable private waste collection company.”

A DEVON Meadows business has been spared conviction after illegally dumping 2.4 tonnes of home-renovation rubbish on a secluded road in Junction Village.

In July last year, Dan’s Diggers was paid $2100 to collect assorted rubbish - including carpet, plasterboards, a bathtub, timber frames and a door - from a Langwarrin address, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

The material was collected in a tip-top truck and then found dumped in Botanic Drive, Junction Village on 3 August 2015.

On inspection of the debris, Casey Council officers found a bank statement for ‘Harshan’ which led them to the accused business.

Dan’s Diggers owner George Horvat told the court on 8 August that a worker had disobeyed his instructions to take the material to a landfill.

“He was a drug addict just taking the money,” Mr Horvat said, adding that the financial position of his business was “not too good”.

“We didn’t have him for long.”

The council submitted for costs of $3215.11 - including about $1650 for legal fees.

Solicitor Chris Andrews, on behalf of Casey, said “serious general deterrence” was necessary due to rubbish dumping being a “huge problem” for local councils.

The agony and ecstasy of ice

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FORMER ice addict Bianca Hawkins offers advice to those thinking of trying the drug - “you can’t hate yourself that bad to want to do ice - because that’s all it is, punishing yourself”.

“At the start ice gave me a feeling like no other, at the end it was an anti-anxiety medication,“ Bianca said.

“It did the opposite to what it did in the beginning - I just needed it to survive.”

Bianca is another star graduate of former drug dealer and addict Glenn Munso’s Youth YOU drug rehabilitation program and gym in Hallam.

Bianca said Glenn’s program worked because decisions weren’t taken away from addicts like they were with other drug rehabilitation clinics.

“Youth YOU gives you the tools to make decisions for yourself, its empowering,” she said.

“I’ve been in rehab before and your choices get taken away from you, you’re locked away from the environment you are used to and when you are released back into that environment drugs are the first thing you want to do.

“With Glenn you have the choice, you either want to be there or you don’t.”

Bianca started taking ecstasy at 15. By the time she was 19 she had graduated to the harder stuff - crystal methamphetamine, or ice.

“I started on ecstasy at school, Ferntree Gully High, at parties,” Bianca said.

“Self-confidence plays a big part in getting on drugs, because they (addicts) don’t know who they are.

“Drugs don’t discriminate - anyone can do drugs and fit into a minority.”

Bianca was a dealer and a user and used certain tactics to keep the cycle turning over, tactics that didn’t involve stealing, but stuff she’d rather not discuss.

Debt soon accumulated, Bianca lost contact with her family and the drug became more like a medication than a bit of fun.

“I paid for my habit by selling ice, most people that are addicted to ice are also dealers - they can, basically, use for free,” Bianca said.

“Ice made me feel like my problems didn’t matter anymore, that nothing else matters, and I look back on them now and they weren’t even problems.

“Ice created them in my head.

Bianca, who now lives with her parents, has had five goals in her 26 years.

One goal was to help people - that’s why she worked in disability care before ice froze that future.

For the next seven years from 19 years old to 15 months ago, Bianca had the same goal - to get off ice.

She failed three times.

“I’ve been clean for 15 months now,” Bianca said.

That leaves just one last goal - to help others get off drugs for good through her course in life coaching.

“When I went clean I put on 20 kilograms in two and a half weeks which was a massive amount of weight gain. I’m about 164cm tall, I’ve never been overweight before,” she said.

Between the weight gain and the acne outbreaks Bianca was in hell.

“It was really hard to deal with, made me want to go back on ice, but I knew I had to hang it out,” she said.

At the height of her addiction Bianca said she didn’t eat much but once off the drug she couldn’t eat enough.

“All I was doing was eating and sleeping, my body was craving everything because it had been deprived for so long,” she said.

“My hair just started growing back, your hair falls out when you use. I destroyed all my internal organs.”

Bianca said the repercussions on the body isn’t something a user thinks about.

“You think you’ll just get off it and it’ll be fine, the last thing you think is that your body will need to recover from it.

“I knew my mind would have to recover from the addiction but not my body.”

Bianca recalls sleeping in cars around the south-east suburbs for eight months as hitting rock bottom.

“You surround yourself with people that you don’t know, everyone’s a stranger but they are all you have,” she said.

“The strangers are the closest people to you at that time, they are the people you sell to and deal with.”

These are now the same people Bianca has had to disassociate with completely to avoid relapsing like she has in the past.

Having pushed away old friends due to ice, and then pushing away the new wave of friends because of ice, Bianca can now say she has a new group of friends ... because of ice.

But they all have one thing in common - ice isn’t in their future.

Bianca Hawkins knows ice. Now 26 years old, she started taking drugs at 15. Now she has some advice for drug users.

How society failed Jesse

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IN the end, the thousands of state dollars put towards protecting Jesse Duncan-McGann’s life in disability care didn't count for enough.

Jesse choked to death in 2008 at 19 years of age, after eating while unsupervised at Peninsula Access and Training Centre in Langwarrin.

In 2010 coroner Peter White found that on the day Jesse choked, he appeared to be happy and in good health.

He ate his lunch while supervised but then later returned to the meals room. While staff were distracted by other clients, Jesse obtained food which he hurriedly ate alone.

The coroner found he did not properly chew his food and choked as a result.

Jesse was found lying unconscious on the floor and was resuscitated by paramedics, but two days later his life support was turned off.

The Duncan-McGann family from Cranbourne cared for Jesse on weekends and after hours and Jesse's mother Deborah has since spoken of her anguish, pleading for improved training services for disability carers.

Jesse’s grandmother, Anita Duncan had worked in disability care for most of her life and now older brother Matthew McGann does too.

Struggling to hold back tears, Matthew told the News why he must keep Jesse's legacy alive.

Jesse was severely autistic and suffered with Asperger’s syndrome and attention deficit disorder and required 24/7 care.

“Jesse was one of the most highly government funded clients in Victoria at the time,” Matthew said.

“Jesse had no awareness of danger."

Jesse had attended the centre for one and a half years, but six months before his death his level of care had been reduced from one-on-one, full-time care.

His family said they were not informed that his level of supervision had been changed.

Anita Duncan said the centre had received extra funding from the government to provide one-on-one care for Jesse, but the family later found out it had stopped because Jesse had

The coroner found that failure to ensure direct supervision of Jesse led to an increased risk of injury and contributed to his death.

After Jesse’s tragic death, Matthew fought depression and even suicide.

“I actually shut my heart down - losing Jesse was pretty tough on me,” he said.

Matthew told the News he supported Forget Me Not Foundation founder, Janine Greening’s call for a Royal Commission into abuse in disability care, “100 per cent”.

“Something needs to be done, there needs to be more awareness around these types of situations (in care) for other families,” Matthew said.

“People need to understand that this is actually going on, places use training shortcuts.

“I don’t blame anyone for Jesse's death, I blame the system that didn’t consider the lives the staff were looking after.

“Anything that can help save lives in care needs to be looked at - maybe Jesse's life and his testimony can help to save another life.

“And to be a voice for Jesse is an honour.”

BAND-AIDS don’t heal mental illnesses, nor do websites - but this one can put you on the right track.

It’s a site specifically designed for the outer south-east growth region and can link its users to the best local mental health services for them.

Developed by not-for-profit mental health service, Ermha in conjunction with Partners In Recovery, the ‘Mental Health Compass’ aims to beat the confusion around service providers.

Launched in May this year the website comes as the State Government boosts the mental health sector with $14 million for a revamp of Monash Children’s Hospital’s facilities.

The cash injection is set to go towards a ‘Early in Life Mental Health Service’ (ELMHS) to be integrated into the new children’s hospital.

The Victorian Government's 10-year Mental Health Plan has seen a State investment of more than $43.48 million, over four years, to support the mental health of children.

Mental health practitioner, trainer and project officer on Ermha’s new online tool, Tamara Stillwell understands firsthand how mental illnesses don’t discriminate with age.

“One in two people will suffer a mental health issue in their lives and one in five will develop a mental illness,” Ms Stillwell said.

“Mental illness is one of the most pressing issues of our times. Not only does it cause

Ms Stillwell said the site aimed to ease one area of the intricate issue.

“Mental health by its very nature is complex and our mental health systems are often difficult for clients and their families to navigate,” she said.

“The Compass was built because it was noted by consumers, carers and service providers that our mental health and social services system was often confusing and difficult to understand.”

A range of in-the-know professionals worked together to

build the Compass, which links users to regional on-the-ground services, websites, mental health legislation and helplines which specialise in a range of conditions including: trauma and abuse, homelessness, bullying, alcohol and other drugs, gambling and family violence.

Ms Stillwell said the Compass was originally developed for the City of Casey, the City of Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Shire, but was now being extended to include services in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.

“Local residents have a consumer-friendly tool that gives them an overview of mental health and social services, to empower them to make more informed choices for themselves, or the people they are caring for,” Ms Stillwell said.

A VAN allegedly full to the brim with cannabis plants has been intercepted by police in Cranbourne.

Casey Highway Patrol members stopped the white Mercedes van about 10.55pm on Tuesday 9 August on High Street after it was detected to have a suspended registration.

But upon inspection police allegedly found 78 cannabis plants and seedlings.

The two occupants of the car were immediately arrested.

The 22-year-old man and 40-year-old man, both Vietnamese nationals, were charged with drug offences and remanded to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

A CASEY man has claimed his house was trashed in retaliation for publicly releasing a sex video of his ex-partner, a court has heard.

The 29-year-old self-employed carpenter pleaded guilty to distributing material contrary to community standards and acceptable conduct at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 August.

He admitted to sending the mutually consensual sex video to two of his friends out of anger, and then contacting his ex-partner to apologise on 22 May. His lawyer said the accused had “exploded” when he found out his ex-partner had cheated on him for

“He immediately regretted his decision. He was angry; he wanted to get back at her.”

The lawyer said that after the incident, the man’s house was broken into and sustained $100,000 of damage to the extent that it was “unliveable”.

Casey police were investigating the property damage, the court was told. The man was living at a new address while still paying a $1600 monthly mortgage on the trashed house plus $1500 a month for a factory to store his goods.

“He has already suffered some form of punishment,” the lawyer said.

The man had also suffered posttraumatic stress disorder from another attack to his house in 2014.

The man, who had never before fronted court, was also seeing a psychologist over his anger issues, his lawyer said.

Magistrate Gerard Bryant retorted saying the submitted psychologist report didn’t address the accused’s offending.

Mr Bryant questioned whether the man’s apology to his ex was genuine remorse or “akin to crocodile tears”.

He said the man’s purpose was to shame his victim by sharing the “intimate” video with people not party to it.

“That is unacceptable behaviour.

We live in an age in which technology allows us to share information at the push of a button.

“We need to ... stop and think of the consequences before we say or share something online that can be deeply hurtful.”

Mr Bryant noted the accused’s plea of guilty and absence of prior convictions.

The man was put on a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction.

He was ordered to write a “heartfelt” apology to the victim, complete an anger management course and donate $300 to the court’s charitable fund.

Men at play HUNDREDS of dads flooded the Hillcrest Christian College multipurpose centre for an evening of fun activities at the school’s first Dads Mentors Date Night.

Dads, stepdads, uncles, grandpas and other male mentors were invited to join Hillcrest students for a night of games, prizes, snags, laughs and a special message for astronauts in training.

There was a selection of table-top and large-scale games set up along with basketball courts, giving participants the chance to share some special one-on-one time with their children.

Casey City Church’s Kevin Manning said the Blue Block Charades proved a popular game because it is run like

a game show.

It challenged players to work together to build specific objects out of life-size building blocks.

With a time-limit, the pressure was on and those watching in the audience sat together trying to work out what the item was, much like traditional charades.

A space presentation was delivered by NASA-trained space science teacher Mr Manning on the subject of ‘astronaut training’.

“It was a fun night enjoyed by all. It was fantastic seeing male role models getting involved with the children,” he said.

“Research shows that when a committed dad or male men-

tor participates in school activities and events, a child’s developmental outcomes improve in every area. Male mentors are important in children’s futures.

That is a fact.”

The free event gave attendees the opportunity to make a silver-coin donation towards supporting the men’s shed. Participants brought their five, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces that were found lying around their homes.

Due to its success, another Dads Mentors Date Night is planned in the coming weeks at Rivercrest Christian College.

The event was held as a joint effort between Casey City Church’s Kevin Manning, Andrew Austin of City of Casey’s Dad’s Matter and Hillcrest community development officer Melani Van der Westhuizen.

Saddling up CORAL Park Primary School is getting active for the launch of the Ride2School’s Active Paths program.

The Hampton Park school is participating in the Bicycle Network’s program and students can either walk, skate, scoot and ride to school along designated ‘Active Path’ routes to the school gate.

The riding and walking routes are identified by footpath stickers.

The program aims to encourage local communities to adopt healthy habits by helping students get 60 minutes of exercise a day and arrive at school alert and energised.

Coral Park Primary School Welfare Co-ordinator, Matt Brand, is keen to see Ride2School’s Active Paths build on the work the school has already been doing to promote healthy and active lifestyles.

“In recent years Coral Park has been working very hard with the help of teachers, parents and student leaders to promote active travel to and from school,” Mr Brand said.

“The introduction of Active Paths will further the school’s good work in getting as many members of the community active and healthy.”

Destroy your tax file number THE Australian Taxation Office is reminding Australians to protect themselves against identify theft this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said identity theft was more common during tax time because of the large number of people lodging tax returns.

“With the amount of personal information being exchanged at tax time, it is a prime opportunity for fraudsters,” Mr Whyte said.

“Highly organised crime networks use a range of methods to steal personal information in order to commit refund fraud.”

In 2014-15, 32,110 cases of identity theft were reported to the ATO. Of these, 22,200 were reported during the peak processing months from July to November.

Over the same period, 677 incidents of identity crime relating to refund fraud were dealt with by the ATO. Mr Whyte said there are a number of ways Australians can protect themselves against identity theft and refund fraud.

It can be as easy as putting a padlock on a letter box or ensuring computers have the latest software and security updates.

“My number one tip is to protect your tax file number by deleting or destroying any record of it from documents before throwing them away.

“When you contact us or submit a form, we use your TFN to identify you. Fraudsters try to steal TFNs and other personal information so that they can lodge tax returns and other tax forms.

“And just like you would with online banking, you should never share your passwords with anyone and ensure you change them regularly,” Mr

Whyte said.

“Although there are a few things you can do to protect your own identity, you can also be confident that we’re doing everything within our power to keep your personal details safe and secure.

“For example, just like your bank, the ATO will now send you a ‘Was this you?’ message via SMS or email when your ATO online account is linked to another myGov account.”

Mr Whyte said while the ATO had seen an increase in identity crime related to refund fraud, new technology is helping it to catch fraudulent behaviour earlier than ever.

“We’re using sophisticated analytics to uncover acts of identity crime and refund fraud, and consistently monitor our online systems to pick up any instances of unusual activity.

“Our systems help us stop incorrect, invalid or fraudulent refunds before they are paid out.

“This includes placing extra security checks on accounts or adding fraudulent bank accounts to watch lists so refunds will not issue.

“If we think a person’s identity has been compromised, we get in touch with them. Our Client Identity Support Centre provides support to taxpayers who have had their identities stolen, misused or otherwise compromised.”

Mr Whyte said that the ATO works with law enforcement and other agencies to take action when fraudulent activity is uncovered.

“We provide the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission with relevant intelligence and information on any suspected instances of identity crime.

“This is an ongoing relationship where we provide intelligence and support on a continual

basis, rather than formal referrals at a point in time.

“The ATO is often only a part of a much broader identity crime issue, and prosecutions reflect the broader nature of these crimes,” he said.

· The ATO recommends following a few easy steps to protect against identity theft: · Put a padlock on letterboxes; · ·Shred documents containing personal details before throwing them away; · Make sure passwords are strong. Use a combi-

nation of letters, numbers and symbols;

· Use legitimate and up-to-date antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware software.

A lost tax file number should be reported, even if misuse is not suspected, to 13 28 61 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday. Calls can also be made on Sunday between 10am to 4pm from 1 July to 31 October.

And if theft or misuse is suspected the ATO should be contacted on 1800 467 033 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.

Ms Popovic beat a competitive field of students and budding businesspeople with her concept for a portal - or online directory - for booking beauty services across Australia.

By chance, she was invited to fill a vacancy in the competition at the last minute.

She won a work space at the recently-opened Casey Cardinia Business Hub, with personalised mentoring, training and networking opportunities for 12 months.

Already selling taekwondo gear in a home-based online business, Ms Popovic and her sister Tijuana were hoping to launch the portal online and as a phone app by October.

She said the directory would help drive internet traffic to beauty specialists, many

“The model itself isn’t revolutionary. There are many online booking services like Uber and Airbnb.

“A lot of people book for services online and related to the idea.”

Ms Popovic found the shark tank judges Mary Agius, Ray Keefe, Simon Maselli and Ron Raju were in a feeding frenzy for the idea.

“It’s really good to get a fresh perspective from someone you can trust and getting a fresh set of ideas,” Ms Popovic said.

“They said, I was actually thinking too small by using just bootstrap funding. They said I could go further and seek a sponsor.”

One of the judges also suggested he could find an appbuilder for Ms Popovic at half her budgeted expectation.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz was not deterred that the prize went to a non-Casey resident.

He said Casey’s “aggressive strategy” was to both attract business into the municipality as well as develop local talent.

Both aims created local jobs, he said.

FEDERATION University Australia is excited to welcome prospective students and their families to its Ballarat and Gippsland campuses for the 2016 Open Day on Sunday 28 August.

At FedUni students learn practical, hands-on skills as part of a community, not just a university.

The Ballarat and Gippsland campuses will be open from 10am to 3pm on the Sunday.

Visitors will be able to explore the wide range of programs at Discovery Points at each campus.

An open evening for students, parents and teachers also will be held on Wednesday 17 August from 4-8pm at the new Berwick campus.

The university will deliver some programs there from 2017.

Masons comfort the kids

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A TEDDY-bear, a blanket, pyjamas and a few comforts - it’s a little significant something to help the thousands of kids taken out of the family home.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids founder Sally Ritter has delivered more than 1600 packs in Victoria and parts of NSW to kids going into foster care and emergency housing since she started the charity.

Such is the demand she’s moved the business out of home to a Camms Road factory - along with new $2500 monthly overheads.

She says the not-for-profit charity is in desperate need of donations for babies and children up to 17 years old - new soft toys, blankets, sleepwear, backpacks, baby bathing items - as well as cash.

In a bolt from the blue, South Eastern Masonic Centre arrived like a knight in shining armour.

It rang and offered to stage a rockand-roll dinner dance to raise funds for the charity.

“It was just amazing,” Ms Ritter said. “Someone rings and says we hold this thing - can we raise money for you?

“That would be great!”

Ms Ritter, a former foster carer, started the charity when she made inquiries to donate to a similar Queensland-based group.

When she found out some of the proceeds were wasted on shipping backpacks to Victorian kids, she forged her own organisation within eight weeks.

The backpacks give a child - who is in a situation of upheaval - a “sense of ownership”. It allows child protection workers and foster families to also focus more wholly on the child as they settle in.

The packs are distributed by the Department of Human Services, Victoria Police, foster care agencies and crisis accommodation providers.

Ms Ritter hopes to expand the charity to kit out thousands more children in need who don’t get a backpack such as children at-risk and those in transitional homeless accommodation.

“There’s so many children to reach - more than 3000 children placed in out-of-home care a year just in Victoria and tens of thousands that haven’t gone through the system yet.

“I just want to give them a soft toy and a blanket to cuddle.”

Giorgio Migliaccio, secretary of the SEMC, said the organisation said “it was an opportunity too good to miss” to back such a new, worthy charity.

“It’s helping children in those situations. It’s just something we had to support.”

The masonic centre wants to back worthy charities with further events in coming months.

Blockbuster double-header

By RUSSELL BENNETT THERE are regular season double headers, and there are playoff double headers. Anyone who heads along to ‘The Fortress’ this Saturday - the home of Casey basketball - will experience the difference first-hand.

The stars have aligned for the Cavs to host a Big V men’s and women’s double-header at the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre on BerwickCranbourne Road in Cranbourne after Stewart Baird’s Division 1 men’s side went down by nine points to Warrnambool on the weekend.

With the Division 2 women’s team finishing on top the ladder, it won straight through to the first semi-final against Blackburn this Saturday from 6pm. Baird’s men’s side will follow from 8pm in the second semi-final against Shepparton.

“In some ways, our spectators will be happy that it’s panned out this way,” Baird said with a laugh, referring to the blockbuster doubleheader.

He said his side threw everything at Warrnambool in its 98-89 defeat, but still could have executed better.

He said the Cavs were tentative early on both ends of the floor on Saturday night, with the third quarter in particular also posing a real challenge for the group.

The Cavs started slow and were outscored 28-14 in the first. The home side shot a whopping 61 per cent from the floor, while the Cavs could only manage 22.

Casey struggled to stop Warrnambool in the third as well, with the

home side piling on 30 points for the quarter, but with only 1:40 in the contest, there was only two points in it.

If the Cavs meet Warrnambool again in the playoffs, it’ll be in the grand final, and Baird is confident should that match-up eventuate.

“It was exactly the game I imagined, and it was played in the manner I thought it would be,” he said of Saturday night’s contest.

“I think we probably gained more than they did in terms of what we learned from the game.”

Baird said his quarter-time message to his side was simply to remain positive.

“I said to the boys to shoot it if they have a shot they like, but if you have to hesitate the moment’s gone,” he said.

There were plenty of promising signs from the Cavs on the weekend. They had more open looks from the field, and they also played an impressive team defensive game on Warrnambool star Nathan Sobey.

He finished with 32 points, 7 boards and 6 assists but shot just 35 per cent from the field - including 2-10 from beyond the arc.

“I couldn’t be happier with Ben Louis and a number of different players on the defensive job they did on (Nathan) Sobey,” he said, reluctant to say too much about Sobey’s game except that “they call it the charity stripe for a reason.

“A few calls left a few people scratching their heads, that’s for sure.”

Sobey shot 16-16 from the free throw line.

Baird said if his side did face Warrnambool in the grand final, it’d be much better off given the exposure it had to the likes of Sobey on the weekend.

But now it’s all about the Shepparton game.

“If you can have a traditional rivalry that’s only four years old, that’s what this is,” Baird said, pointing to the history the two teams share at both Division 2 and Division 1 level.

“There’s a rivalry built purely on respect.

“They’ve been such a stable group for a while now, and it’s always great to be able to play against them.

“They’re certainly a very proud club.”

Baird said the Cavs would be looking to lock in defensively on star Shepparton guard Matt Bartlett, and the team’s import for this season Reggie Fuller.

“We’ll be throwing a few different types of defence at them, which should really make them think,” he said.

“Offensively, it’s about playing to our strengths. We should have a bit of a size advantage, so we need to make the most of that in the post.”

The Cavs’ Division 2 women’s side has strong recent form against Blackburn, having notched a 24-point win on 30 July.

The other game with local significance this Saturday will be at the Mornington Basketball Stadium where the home side hosts the Cavs’ Youth League 2 men’s side.

Eagles unable to sustain momentum

VFL WOMEN - ROUND 16 SUSTAINING its best football for four quarters is the big challenge for Cranbourne after the Eagles wasted a flying start to go down to Seaford by 23 points at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Coach Kris Smith had built this one up as a “mini grand final”- and the Eagles played a premiership brand of football in the first term.

From the moment Hayley Wildes broke clear with the first centre clearance of the match, the Eagles looked the better side. They dominated possession and hurt the Tigers where it hurts most -on the scoreboard- kicking out to a 21-point lead.

Kirsten McLeod kicked the first two goals of the match, Bianca Jakobsson the next and the Eagles had opened up a three-goal lead. The dangerous Danielle Lawrence then returned fire for the Tigers, before the Eagles continued their charge.

Wildes converted after a handball from Shayla Marsh, and then Michaela Manning scrambled one through from the goal square to open up that 21-point advantage.

Katelyn Cox then capitalised on some sloppy defensive work from the Eagles to cut the margin to 15 points at the first break.

But that looked to be a minor hiccup as McLeod kicked truly at the start of the second term.

The Eagles were playing great football; Courtney Clarkson and Cara Moody were winning the ruck duels, while Wildes, Jakobsson and Corrine Cullis were having a massive influence around the ground.

It was hard to imagine at the time, but the Eagles would kick just one more goal for the match as the Tigers took command.

Goals to Cox and Emma Hall narrowed the margin to 10, before Hall marked strongly to bring the Tigers to within a kick. Amazingly, considering Cranbourne’s dominance, Cox put Seaford four-points up at half time with a clever rightfoot snap at the 20-minute mark of the second term.

The third term was an arm wrestle. Kim Ebb marked a great pass from Sarah Hosking at the fiveminute mark to kick the Tiges out to an 11-point lead, before McLeod cut the margin to five after some great ball movement from Jakobsson. But that was the end of the penny section for the Eagles.

Trailing by just four points at the final exchange, the Eagles clawed for 10 minutes, but then slowed to a walk as the Tigers piled on 3.2 to 0.1

Plapp said that one of his main aims when he joined the Scorpions was slowly coming to fruition.

“Probably the number one priority was bringing some respect back to this footy club,” he said.

“Those respect levels haven’t been great in recent times, but we’re creating a winning culture in a very competitive environment.”

VFL - ROUND 18 BREAK Essendon’s spirit early and then race away for a convincing victory -things went pretty much according to script for Justin Plapp and his Casey Scorpions on Saturday night.

The by-product of the ultraimpressive 86-point victory -under lights at Casey Fields- is the Scorps now find themselves perched at the top of the VFL ladder with just three rounds remaining.

But Plapp was more impressed with a fierce determination for the contest that set a standard that was too high for the Bombers.

“We really focused in on starting well, and we knew our hunger and exuberance for the contest was something we could use to our advantage,” the Scorpions coach said.

“They had experienced players like (Matthew) Stokes and (Ryan) Crowley who have reached great heights in the game, played on the biggest stage, and we needed to test their hunger early. We were elated with the way our players performed -we set it up early and really went on with the job.”

The Scorps were dominant from the start, but kicked a wasteful 3.5 to 0.1 in the first term before straightening up with a 5.1 to 2.2 second stanza.

The radar was dialled in even further with a third-quarter blitz that saw 8.1 to 2.0 sail through the big sticks.

But what made this victory even more impressive was the Scorps were missing some of their key players from throughout the season. Full-forward Sam Weideman was busy kicking two goals in his AFL debut for Melbourne, while Cam Pederson was a late withdrawal.

Clayton Oliver also received a call-up for the Dees, while the loss of ruckman Jake Spencer loomed as the biggest inconvenience of all.

But up stepped Oscar McInerney.

THE local sporting community has once again been rocked by the loss of a champion human being with Paul Schreurs losing his short battle with cancer.

The Tooradin Cricket Club F Grade premiership player was diagnosed less than a month ago but in that time still had the opportunity to spend time with his mates from the Gulls nest.

He is, truly, one of the most loved figures at Tooradin and his loss has deeply affected the club.

“Our club is devastated to lose such fun-loving, great bloke,” Gulls club president Kane Latham said.

“He was always smiling, and always making everyone else smile.

“Guys like Paul don’t come along often, and the world is much a poorer place without him in it.

“He was one of the true, genuine blokes.”

Schreurs made headlines in the Gazette in November of 2014 when he made the Cricket Snicks page after taking a selfie while wearing a French maid’s outfit. It was his punishment in the club’s famous dice game ‘Cat’s Craps’ - named after its creator Chris Brennan. Schreurs had just made ducks in consecutive games and could have opted not to roll the dice and face his punishment, but he never saw that as an option.

‘Rays top of the TAC

By DAVID NAGEL SITTING at the peak of the TAC Cup landscape would make it pretty easy for the Dandenong Stingrays to solely focus its attention on breaking a 25-year-old premiership drought.

Stingrays coach Craig Black is well aware that his club has an empty space in its trophy cabinet, but insists that’s not what it’s all about in the TAC Cup. “Look, if we made it to grand final day, we’d be trying to win, don’t worry about that, but it’s sort of a secondary consideration at TAC Cup level,” Black said.

“We’ve been very successful in terms of getting our players drafted, we had six drafted into the AFL last year, and that’s the sign that our program is working.

“There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before we get to that point (grand final) anyway, but if the players are improving then team success will be a byproduct of that.”

One of the great challenges that confront coaches at this level is getting the future stars of the game to put personal gain aside and to work together as a unit. Personal glory versus team success - Black says it’s always a constant challenge.

“That’s always a balancing act, and we encourage the players to play with attacking flair but make sure it’s done within the team structures,” Black said.

“There’s plenty of exposure at this level, there’s nowhere to hide, so if a player is being selfish it will stand out pretty quickly. We keep the players accountable and more importantly they hold each other to account.”

The Stingrays take on Murray at Shepley Oval this Saturday at 2pm.

This week we take a close look at the player statistics of Narre Warren during its 16.18(114) to 4.6(30) victory over Officer at Starling Road on Saturday.

Magpies’ coach Heath Black reacted savagely to his side’s Round 15 loss to Doveton, making seven changes at the selection table.

In came Mitch Dempster, Jarrod Dalton, Cory Machaya, Jack Wheeler and Nathan Foote, while Tim Mashado and Troy Mengler came in for their first taste of the big time.

The seven omissions were all dropped to the twos, with Chris Collins, Andrew Hunter, Grant Lofthouse, Tait Sabec, Nathan Reid, Hayden Stagg and Chris Johnson all paying the price for the previous week’s performance.

The Magpies’ pressure gradually wore the Kangaroos down on the weekend, having 139 possessions in the first half and a whopping 210 after half-time.

Clash for third spot hots up

By DAVID NAGEL WE WILL know a lot more about the premiership hopes of Hampton Park and Doveton this week when the Doves make the short trip down the South Gippsland Highway to Robert Booth Reserve.

The winner will almost certainly claim third place on the ladder and a double chance, while the loser will head into dangerous territory against the emerging Cranbourne in the elimination final.

There’s a lot to play for in this one.

Doveton rested its aching legs on the weekend, while the Redbacks warmed up for their do-or-die clash with an impressive 14-goal, 55-41, victory over Tooradin.

The Redbacks came out like a shot out of a gun, scoring at a rapid rate, with Brooke Kiely (goal shooter) and Birgitta Nemaric (goal

attack) unstoppable up front. Kiely scored 29, while Nemaric’s contribution far outweighed her 23 goals on the scoresheet.

Monalisa Groom (centre) was superb for four quarters for the winners, while Alex Duff (GS), Kelly Haynes (GA) and Emma Iacovou (wing attack) stood tall in a winning last quarter for the Gulls.

Cranbourne matches up very well against Beaconsfield and pushed the second-placed side all the way, losing 43-40, in the battle of the Eagles at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

Beaconsfield took a narrow advantage in the first quarter and -despite being pushed- never surrendered that lead throughout the course of the afternoon. Cranbourne has shown it can mix it with the big guns in the competition over the last fortnight and will learn a valuable lesson from this one - be switched on from the start!

Beacy was well served by its reliable strike force of Bianca Sanzaro (GS) and Andi Dickson (GA), while Kaela Hughes (goal defence/centre) transformed from a frugal defender in the first quarter to an attacking mid-courter in the second.

Danni Cameron (goal keeper) was the rock in defence, sharing the circle with Hughes and Gabby Stinear (GD) when things were at their most intense.

Cranbourne continues to impress, and coach Donna Wilson will be hoping that a tough run home -against Narre Warren and Hampton Park- won’t deny her girls a place in the September action. It becomes an extended finals series for Cranny who have been super-impressive in recent times.

The defensive partnership of Hayley Galpin (GK) and Tara Cecil (GD) continues to grow, while Nat Sparks (WA), Steph Ryan (WD) and

Mel Perrins (C) are providing Tegan Stahl (GS) and Alanah Hardy (GA) with plenty of scoring opportunities up front.

Beaconsfield can do Cranbourne a massive favour this week -defeat Tooradin, and Cranny will earn a finals berth.

In other games, Tayla Shannon sparked Narre Warren into action after a tougher-than-expected first half against a gallant ROC. The Magpies led 31-25 at half time, but found their compass after the break to win running away in the end.

And Berwick must wish it could play Pakenham every weekend, making it two from two over the Lions this season with a 45-40 victory at Toomuc Reserve. The Wickers will be confident, and keen to add another notch to their belts when they host ROC this week at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Wickers answer skipper’s appeal

By DAVID NAGEL REIGNING premier Berwick has sent out a timely reminder that its best football is still the benchmark of the South East Football Netball League with an emotioncharged 59-point victory over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve.

The Wickers fed off an ‘usagainst-them’ mentality after their co-captain Madi Andrews was suspended for four weeks last Wednesday. The Wickers appealed the decision to the AFL Victoria Country Appeals Board on Friday, with Andrews exonerated and freed to play the next day and for the remainder of the season.

Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet said the trials and tribulations of Andrews had inspired his team to one of its best performances of the season.

“It was sensational, that was some of the best footy we’ve played all year,” Nisbet enthused.

“We needed something to get our group going, and maybe this was the thing that needed to happen to get us going. Our intensity was right up from the first bounce, and that’s our barometer, our starts, and that’s as good a start as we’ve had in a fair while.”

Berwick really did hit the ground running, with the likes of Lucas Jellyman-Turner and Luke Sheppard scorching the turf with their hard running patterns.

Kurt Batt, Tim Gunn, Luke Nelson, Mitch Johnson, Ben Kearns and Mark Weekes applied terrific pressure in the front half, causing the Lions to cough the ball up with monotonous regularity.

The Wickers were at their most dominant in the first stanza, opening up a 23-point lead and were never headed.

Mitch Johnson finished with five, Kearns four, while Jo West, Michael Johnson and Luke Sheppard were brilliant in defence.

Cranbourne still has a ques-

tion mark hanging over its head despite a grinding 17-point victory over Beaconsfield in the battle of the Eagles at Holm Park Road.

The biggest question heading in was how Cranny would cover the loss of champion full-forward Marc Holt -who has a broken leg- and the answer was less than convincing. Cranbourne relied on a range of mid-sized types, with Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Jones kicking two, while speedy-types like Dylan Cavalot, Aaron Bower and Anthony Vella used the wide expanse of Holm Park to full advantage.

Beaconsfield ruckman Scott Meyer was simply superb, while full-forward Beau Dowler made the most of his opportunities to finish the day with three.

Tooradin survived a scare against Hampton Park, with the Seagulls rallying well after half time for a 35-point victory at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Redbacks should have buried the Seagulls in the first quarter, but kicked 4.7 to 2.0 to waste a plethora of opportunity.

The Redbacks kicked the first two goals of the third term, kicking out to a nine-point lead, before the Seagulls made their move.

The visitors kicked 7.10 to 1.2 from that point forward to record just their third victory for the season.

Andrew Dean kicked three for the winners, while Adam Galea and Troy Dolan were terrific four-quarter contributors. Kane White held firm for the Redbacks down back.

And finally Narre Warren made light work of Officer with an 84-point drubbing at Starling Road.

Jarrod Dalton kicked five for the Magpies while hard-ball extractors Trent Cody and Dylan Quirk went diligently about their work.

Audi Avant stays sharp

By EWAN KENNEDY AUDI station wagons, which they call Avants, are huge in Europe and particularly in their home market of Germany.

Avants are easy to spot, just drive on an autobahn at high speed, but keep out of the fast lane, pretty soon one will pass you at 200+ kmh.

It will probably be black and a sales rep of some sort will be at the steering wheel in a hurry to their next appointment.

Sounds like heaven? It is, but sadly not in Australia. The driving, that is.

The latest A4 Avant joined the sedan a couple of months ago.

It’s slightly longer and wider than the old Avant and sits on a longer wheelbase.

Most of the extra size has gone into significantly increasing legroom in the rear, although there’s also more elbowroom and headroom.

Audi Avant 2WD model starts with a recommended list price of $63,900, the quattro all-wheel-drive $72,900. That’s $3000 over the cost of the equivalent sedans.

Styling follows the latest successful Audi theme of sharp lines and neat geometric angles.

The wagon’s rear has been neatly integrated into the front shape and profile. Overall, this certainly doesn’t scream out that it’s a station wagon.

The interior features Audi’s usual immaculate style and quality of finish. This is an upmarket stylish place in which to travel.

Audi’s new ‘virtual cockpit’ instrument layout is easy to use and can be tailored by the driver to show the most important displays according to different driving situations.

Two drivetrains are offered, both based around a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a seven-speed Audi dual-clutch automatic, tagged S-tronic.

The A4 front-driver develops 140 kW of power, and 320 Nm of torque from 1450 to 4200 rpm.

In the Avant quattro allwheel-drive the engine has a sportier state of tune to bring it up to 185 kW, with 370 Nm between 1600 and 4500. Our test

vehicle was a quattro.

Audi’s MMI infotainment system is one of the most advanced currently on the market.

It is controlled through an easy to see 8.3-inch screen.

It has a DVD player, which can also operate through optional rear-seat tablet screen.

There’s up to10Gb of music storage. It receives live traffic reports and five free map updates are in included in the A4’s price.

Australasian NCAP has rated the Audi A4 Avant as a fivestar vehicle.

In the cargo area there are safety rails on the floor and several straps to let you secure items in various ways.

The adjustable cargo cover looks to be able to take a fair bit of punishment in crashes.

The front seats are comfortable, though some may find them a little narrower than they like.

The rears are noticeably more spacious than before, with legroom for full-sized adults.

Two will be more comfortable than three in the back seat.

The luggage area has a volume of 505 litres with the rear seat backs in place, and 1510 litres with the 40/20/40 split-fold backrests down.

They don’t fold completely flat but stop an irritating few degrees above where we would like them to be.

The sleek slope of the rear robs the wagon of some carrying ability as large boxy items won’t fit.

The turbo-petrol TFSI engine seems to have endless amounts of torque. There’s some minor lag before you get the full benefit of this grunt, but we have felt worse.

Driving modes are Normal and Sport. Changes to the engine and transmission characteristics are quite obvious.

Sport has the A4 down a gear

or two most of the time, which chew up fuel. However, the gear selector is extremely easy to use so you can juggle performance needs in a moment.

Smoothness and quietness are very good, all the more so when you consider the added difficulty of designing a station wagon body. These Audis make excellent long distance cruisers.

Handling is neutral until the cars are pushed really hard, when the front-driver exhibits some safe understeer.

The quattro, with its added grip and lower profile tyres, can produce the sort of driving that keen punters love.

The new high-tech Audi headlight system darkens the LED lights only in the area where it would dazzle other drivers, either in front or ahead.

The rest of the lights remain on high beam giving a much broader view.

It works extremely well in country areas, providing almost the feeling of having daylight in front.

However, these Audi lights are whiter and brighter than conventional ones and may give the impression they are on high beam.

We found it best to use conventional low beam around town and only switch to the intelligent LED system on the open road.

Audi’s new A4 Avant quattro wagon gives sporting performance allied with added carrying ability and it looks good too, definitely one to add to your list of possibilities if you don’t want the bulk of an SUV. Note that the next cab off the Audi A4 rank is the Allroad version due early September. It’s a neat cross between the standard wagon tested here and an SUV.
