A SOUTHERN Downs mechanic is on his way to the Queensland Training Awards state finals in Brisbane in September.

Southern Downs Regional Council mechanic, Brodie Ellery, received top honours, taking out the 2016 Apprentice of the Year award for the Darling Downs South West region to earn a place in the finals.

Brodie was one of three regional finalists selected as part of the 55th Queensland Training Awards (QTA), to contest the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, at the Darling Downs South West regional awards ceremony on 22 July in Toowoomba.

The Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year award recognises people of the highest calibre who have achieved great things locally in their apprenticeships.

Brodie completed his Diesel Fitter apprenticeship with council in November, achieving a Certificate III in Heavy Vehicle Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie congratulated Brodie on his success in the QTA regional round.

“Brodie is an outstanding young man who deserves this Award in recognition of his achievements throughout his apprenticeship, and council is very proud of him,” she said.

As a regional winner, Brodie will now progress to the state finals of the prestigious Queensland Training Awards at a gala dinner on 9 September in Brisbane.

Scooter theft Local thieves set a new low last week when the mobility scooter of a 77-year-old male resident was stolen from the rear of Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Folkestone Street at about 2am Thursday 14 July. Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said the vehicle had been left at the rear of the business overnight awaiting tyre repair. CCTV footage depicts a male person pushing the scooter northbound up Folkestone Street at about 2am that morning.

Police are seeking the assistance of the public who may have sighted the missing scooter, which is a beige coloured Pihsiang Shoprider that, at the time, was bearing registration 094CF.

A number of both drug offenders and drug drivers were charged over the past week with substantial quantities of drugs being located police said.

The drivers of two vehicles intercepted tested positive to drugs and were charged accordingly. One, a 30-year-old woman, was intercepted on the New England Highway Applethorpe and as well as testing positive to drugs, was found to be in possession of a quantity of cannabis resulting in her being drug diverted by police.

Another vehicle stopped at the same location resulted in the location of a bag containing a crystalline substance believed to be methylamphetamine and also a pipe used for the consumption of a drug. The 24-yearold male occupant of the vehicle was subsequently charged.

Police said another vehicle stopped at around midday last Wednesday produced a quantity of cannabis, the 21-year-old male driver being charged with possessing dangerous drugs.

Snr Sgt Ireland said police executed a search warrant on premises situated at Aplin Street, Stanthorpe locating a quantity of cannabis and resulting in the 50-year-old male occupant being offered and accepting drug diversion.

“Another warrant executed on premises at Sugarloaf Road, Sugarloaf resulted in the location of a large quantity of cannabis, both plants and seeds, an unregistered rifle and ammunition and a set of nunchakus, a restricted weapon under the Weapons Act,” he said “ A 58-year-old male resident was charged with eight drug and weapons offences. A 28-year-old male was also charged with one weapons offence.”

POLICE were kept busy with two accidents on the weekend, one tragically resulting in the death of a woman at Stanthorpe on Saturday afternoon.

Police and Emergency Services responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at about 3.30pm Saturday afternoon at the intersection of New England Highway and Wallangarra Road, Stanthorpe.

Officer in charge of Stanthorpe Police, Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said tragically the crash resulted in the death of a female passenger in the vehicle despite efforts by witnesses and emergency services personnel.

“The incident occurred when a Toyota sedan travelling northbound on the New England Highway, turned in the path of a Kenworth prime-mover that was travelling southbound at the time. Police and victims were assisted by a number of passersby at the time who stopped to assist,” he said.

“Police would like to thank all of those persons who stopped and assisted at the scene until additional emergency services personnel arrived.”

He said earlier in the day a man was cut from the utility he was driving after he lost control of the vehicle on Old Warwick Road, Glen Niven, rolling and coming to rest against a tree. Despite having to be cut from the vehicle, fortunately he escaped relatively unscathed.

“If you have observed a similar vehicle please contact Stanthorpe Police so that the offenders can be deservingly bought to justice,” Snr Sgt Ireland said.

Car lovers get motors runnin’ ALTHOUGH many would relish the opportunity to see the likes of Peter Brock, Allan Moffat and John Goss return to the road, it is the famous cars they drove during the glory days of Bathurst in the ’60s and ’70s, that returned -rolling into the Southern Downs at the weekend.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Aussie Muscle Car Run headed into the region at the weekend and saw legendary Aussie muscle cars including the Monaro, Falcon GT, Torana and Mustang take participants on a 2125-kilometre sweep of Queensland.

The run is being held throughout Queensland from 31 July to 6 August.

The cars in the region over the weekend included a 1972

HG Monaro GTS owned by David (father) and Grant (son) Stuchbury.

They initially did the 2013 run in SA in David’s yellow HK Monaro in memory of their father and grandfather who passed away after a battle with leukaemia.

Since then, David himself has been diagnosed with myeloma. Amazingly, Grant also works as a cancer biologist, searching for new cancer therapies, including childhood leukaemia.

Also on show was a silver 1967 Ford Falcon GT (red stripes) - from Jeff Gilbert and Pam Frith.

The money raised from the event will help fund life-saving blood cancer research and provide support for families impacted by blood cancer.

The Leukaemia Foundation receives no direct government support and relies on the generosity of the community to help patients beat their blood cancer.

Rodeo fund-raiser is far from trivial ASHLEIGH Grant, an entrant in this year’s Warwick Rodeo Queen Quest will hold a trivia night at the showgrounds as a fund-raiser for the competition.

The event will be held on 13 August and is $12.50 per person, with tables of eight and doors open at 6pm.

Ashleigh, a 23-year-old paralegal at Maxwell and Lancaster Solicitors, is taking part in the queen quest for the second time.

“In 2011 I entered the Warwick Rodeo Queen Quest; though I did not win I walked away with the title of overall fund-raiser,” Ashleigh said.

“Since then I have volunteered at the last five Annual Warwick Rodeos and Campdrafts. Starting off by helping enter scores or timing in the announcer's box for the campdraft and helping the cattle committee in the back yards.

“I also joined and have been actively involved with the campdraft, rodeo, Queen Quest, PR/marketing and NYE rodeo committees and have managed the society’s social media outlets for three years.”

She said after being heavily involved with the show society for so many years, I wanted the opportunity to be able to promote Australia’s most famous rodeo from a different perspective,” Ashleigh said.

What’s On Rummage for jazz and jumpers NUMBERS were up across the board for this year’s Jazz and Jumpers in July with organizers praising its success.

Event spokeswoman Karina Devine said this year’s 10 days of fun, frivolity and woolen goods proved a lot of fun.

She said many events were well up on previous years and she’d had a lot of positive feed-back declaring it the best

music and art in the event’s history.

Karina said everything was well attended with many visitors coming for more than just a weekend or one or two events.

On Saturday one of the highlights was the popular Suitcase Rummage market and photographer Terry West was there with his camera to capture all the fun.

Cooking some great barbecue food are Merrida Somes, Frank Paulo and Kathy Armstrong.

Entertaining the crowd on Saturday are Steamboat Jazz Boyz.

TWO weekends ago I attended the Texas Show, which is the last on the calendar for my electorate of Southern Downs for the year.

I was impressed by the investment made by the local show society throughout the year, with a brandnew set of campdrafting yards and new entertainment options for patrons.

There was a great atmosphere of community celebration and interaction.

Queensland’s show season kicks off in Stanthorpe in the last week of January and progressively moves throughout the state during the year.

In our area, shows have been a part of our community culture for almost as long as our modern communities have existed. Indeed, the Warwick Show commenced in 1867 and next year is its 150th year, a remarkable achievement in a state which only started free settlement three decades before that.

It is also encouraging that the numbers of people attending shows around Queensland are increasing.

This demonstrates that what they offer is as relevant to community today, as it was in Warwick’s case 150 years ago.

Even though technology, transport and communications have dramatically changed our methods of plying our chosen trade, or profession over those many decades, the culture and underlying values of our

State Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg has had another busy week including attending the Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce AGM on Thursday night at The Wine College.

The evening saw President, John Bylicki present Maddie Burton with an achievement award for Snowflakes in Stanthorpe and John Boucher (pictured with John Bylicki and Mr Springborg)presented with a life membership award. display quality produce and animals, arts and crafts, cooking and various demonstrations.

While agricultural shows in general have a central purpose and theme, they all have unique characteristics, which reflect the industries and communities that support them.

Art at the heart of humanity TWO art installations have been introduced into Stanthorpe this week.

The first ‘The Human Condition’ is the newest exhibition to grace the walls of the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and explores the traits that make us human, while “Before I Die” is a global art installation currently temporarily installed outside the post office in town.

In “The Human Condition” significant artists such as William Robinson are placed in dialogue with some lesser known personalities showing this universal theme affects one and all.

The works reflect happiness and suffering, hope and despair - and the juxtapositions shed light on abiding elements of the human condition.

The exhibition features works from the SDRC collection that was established in 1972 through the biennial art festival.

The collection has grown to over

900 pieces, representing the diversity of Australian art practice through the wide ranging mediums of fibre/textile, painting, ceramics, works on paper and sculpture.

A number of internationally recognised Australian artists are represented in the collection with selected works having great significance in their oeuvres.

William Robinson, Jon Molvig, Margaret Olley, Charles Blackman are present with artists such as Gordon Bennett, Barbara Schey and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott having pivotal works represented.

Generous donations from Pamela Bell OAM, and William Bowmore AM have added considerable depth to the collection.

In conjunction with the display, the gallery has created a temporary art installation outside the post office.

Olympic spirit set to rise The

ONLY a few more sleeps until the party really begins in Rio, and I am sure even the most ambivalent among us will be feeling the excitement of the Opening Ceremony on Saturday morning. Of course, I have to agree with a commentator who said earlier in the week the fun and frivolity for the Opening Ceremony and the vents for that matter will need to been right on time - even a little late rather than 15 minutes early in which case nothing would be finished.

It will certainly be a rush to the finishing line for the organisers, and the IOC must be holding their collective breaths, hoping that everything is finished in time and, of course, that what is finished stays together unlike the rowing pontoon.

Let’s hope for the sake of the athletes that all runs smoothly and that magical Olympic spirit rises to the fore.

While we wait in anticipation of all things gold at the Olympics, sports fans were treated to a feast of netballing goals and gold last weekend in one of the most amazing sporting finals I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky people to snap up a ticket to the final and had to settle for a court side spot in the lounge room as the Firebirds and Swifts went shot for shot and head to head in a Netball final equally as exciting as any State of Origin.

With big changes ahead in 2017 for the game, the final game of the Trans-Tasman series sets the stage for netball to climb to even greater heights in coming years in the new competition format.

Of course, the question on everyone’s lips is: “Will she or Won’t she?” - The “Retirement” question is now being asked of the Firebirds, Queensland and Australian netball captain, Allora’s own Laura Geitz.

Geitz has proven herself one of the most inspirational and outstanding captains in Australian sporting history, and while she hinted of perhaps retirement prior to the final she says she has made no decision yet and will take some time to consider her options after this historic win.

This young woman has done much for her sport and women’s sport in general. Let’s hope this great Queenslander does not decide to call it quits just yet.

- Casey Footnote: With one eye on the Olympics - especially the swimming and the progress of our Women’s Rugby Seven’s side, I will myself be preparing for the 2016 Wanderers South West Quensland Tour which for me kicks off next Tuesday. I will also be keeping a close eye on the two Warwick tourists David Walker and Carter Bilbrough who are joining us this year.

With the umpires gear packed and ready, I am looking forward to sharing some time with John Buchanan and Ian Healy to get their insight on the performance (or non-performance) of the Aussie cricketers in Sri Lanka. Will bring you all the news from the trip next week, bearing in mind “what happens on tour stays on tour”.

BUNKER BADNESS AND NRL MADNESS THE NRL officialdom must surely take a long hard look at the current state of play and perhaps shock horror they should lend an ear to their fans.

The drums are beating in fan land, and it is certainly not with a chorus of enjoyment or excitement. Fans are fed up with rule changes, indecision and incorrect decisions which are milking the game of its entertainment value and its roots.

The NRL must take heed of those who used to tune in to their TVs religiously and or attend the games, but who now frankly my dear “couldn’t give a damm” to borrow a phrase.

When the greats of the game are left scratching their heads and questioning what the #### is going on, then things are grim.

With only a handful of games left before the final series, would that we could blow up the bunker and return to the days of one referee, two linesmen with eyes that work and players that respect the referee. Sorry I just awoke and that is but a dream.

Round 22 awaits, and we will see what nonsense comes of these games.

The Broncos and Dragons get things underway on Thursday night at Win Stadium, and it is a win that Brisbane are desperately in need although after their performance against Penrith fans were left to wonder how. Brisbane have plenty of attack returning to the field in round 22 and this represents their final chance with me.

The Eels and Sea Eagles face off at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night. Reality seems to have hit the Eels while the Eagles are on a flight path to the finals. They should notch up another win here with Tom Trbojevic in flying form and DCE back to his best.

I gave the Knights some hope of winning against the Eagles last week, however Newcastle fans may have to wait a bit longer before they see the best of this young side. This week, they have the task of hosting the Bulldogs who are snapping at the heels of the top four and searching for the two points.

In what looks the clash of the round, the Sharks host the Raiders at Shark Park. The Sharks will be out for blood after their winning streak came to a halt at Cbus stadium on Monday night in the thrilling draw against the Titans. The Raiders have slipped under the radar somewhat and shot to third on the ladder one point ahead of the Cowboys and Doggies. The green machine is back, and means business. This will be a torrid affair and I am leaning towards a Raiders win.

The Storm host the Bunnies in what should be another two points for Melbourne. The return of Greg Inglis is sure to give the Bunnies more starch. Although an upset looks unlikely, Souths supporters can expect a better performance.

The Titans and Warriors are in seventh and eighth spots on the ladder and they meet on Sunday afternoon at Cbus stadium in what is an important game for both clubs. The Titans have surprised this season, and I think can upset the Warriors in another close encounter here.

The jury is still out on whether JT returns this week for the Cowboys game against the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. There will be plenty of local support for the Tigers- with or without JT, I think the Cowboys can win here.

Monday night’s game looks to be another thriller with the Panthers and Roosters going toe to toe at Pepper Stadium. The Roosters will be full of confidence coming off the back of an unlikely win over the Broncos while the Panthers will be looking for redemption after their loss to the Warriors in extra time. Perhaps, the Mountain Men with the home- ground advantage on what is sure to be a cold night. And finally, would it be too much to ask from fans that have one round of football where the bunker and refs don’t dominate the conversation - please.

WIN FOR BARNETT AND EVANS THE Stanthorpe Golf club hosted a 4BBB medley stableford on Saturday. A good field turned out for the event which was sponsored by club president Stephen Kay. The winning team of Keith Barnett and Lorraine Evans returned 49

There will be plenty of local interest in the Women’s Sevens Rugby games at Rio with the extended Caslick family cheering for Charlotte Caslick and her team-mates. points. Each contributed to the winning score.

Barnett had the better part of the out nine, while his partner took over on the back nine.

Slipping into second spot with a score of 46 points was the team of Kay Webb and Graham Tonkin with a score of 46 point. Their back nine of 25 points was just not quite enough to get them to the winner’s podium after they recorded 21 points on the front nine.

Rob McConnell had best pin shot at 3/12 and Bill Pyne collected the pin at 17. No one picked up the ladies pin at 3/12, however Lorraine Evans had best approach at 17.

Pro-pins went to Michael Thompson at 1/10, Rob McConnell at 5/14 and Dylan Barraclough at 9/18.

Congratulations to Dylan Barraclough who has worked his handicap down to plus one after returning a score of 67 off the stick for his 18 holes last Saturday. It is a great result for his hard work, however it makes scoring a little more difficult but he will handle that.

In Captain’s match play, Mick Thompson was successful in his match with Fred Wharton.

The month has rolled around and this Saturday is the August monthly medal and putting competition with tee off from 11am. Gino’s Floorcoverings is the sponsor for Saturday’s competition.

BOXERS ON THE ROAD TO B’BERG A TEAM of four boxers from the Rose City Boxing club is set to compete in the Wide Bay Boxing titles in Bundaberg this weekend.

Making the trip will be Jake Wyllie who will fight in the 60kg division; Jacko McMahon 75kg division, and Charlie Sweedman 70kg division.

They will be joined by Teresa Poole who will compete in the Ladies 60kg division.

Head trainer Damien Lawler says the team has had a very good and hard preparation for the titles. Lawler said that while he was not sure if the boxers would be matched for the tournament, judging by previous years he was confident that they would all get a fight.

Jacko McMahon is certainly clocking up the travel kilometres. Last he was in Cronulla for the annual Queensland NSW State of Origin, and this weekend he will be on the road again, heading north.

Unfortunately, there was not maroon glory for McMahon who fought the current NSW and Aus-

tralian No.1 in his division, Kobi Rugless. Despite losing the bout, McMahon fought well with his long reach and heavy hitting stunning Kobi at times, but it was not enough to secure the win.

After the fight, McMahon said he was happy with the bout but thought he could have done a little more at times. In the end, it was the experience of Kobi that won him the fight.

The Rose City Boxing Team train every afternoon from 3.30 to 4.30pm and all potential boxers or anyone interested in taking a look at the sport are invited to come down and meet with trainer Damien Lawler or give him a call on mobile 0415 186 269 for further information.

COWBOYS HEAD THE CHARGE THE Warwick Cowboys have charged to the top of the TRL leader board following their gutsy 1710 win over Pittsworth in Round 19 last Saturday.

The Cowboys did it the hard way in the Hutchies game of the round played in Pittsworth, trailing the home side 10-4 at the break. Pittsworth who were coming off a shock loss to the Eagles at their previous outing, had all the running in the opening stages of the game and took an early 6-0 lead. Warwick scored but with a failed conversion trailed 6-4 before the Danes crossed for another try to edge a little clearer at the break.

The second half saw the Cowboys take it up a gear when it mattered. They were sharp in attack and there was some bruising defence from the forwards. Trent Richardson back from Rep duties with the Queensland Rangers led the charge, managing to hold out the Danes persistent attack.

Richardson’s efforts earned him the Hutchies Mug for player of the game.

While the Danes failed to score in the second half, the Cowboys ran in two tries to give them a 16-10 lead before lock Jamie Abbas slotted a 30m field goal to put the game out of reach for the home side.

Pittsworth and Warwick sit on equal points 28 at the top of the table with the Cowboys edging to the number one spot with a better for and against, and the fight is on in earnest for the minor premiership. With just three rounds of fixtures left to play, Pittsworth have played 18 games to Warwick’s 17 and they have the bye this weekend.

In Round 20 the Cowboys host Brothers in a game where they will be looking to extend their lead over the Danes.

The Cowboys Under 18 side also did their bit in the club’s hunt for the Club championships with a 48-4 win last weekend in Pittsworth.

Local Sport NEWS FROM THE RANGE IN GREAT news from the Inglewood range - there were some spectacular results last week with not a shot fired. A working bee accomplished much.

With plenty of people on the tools, the group revamped the Single Action area so more cowboys can be accommodated. Others mounted an extensive search for mysterious leaks in the water supply.

After all the manual labour of last weekend, members will be looking forward to some action this weekend.

Clay targets have been scheduled for this Sunday and Single Action and Rimfire Rifle the following weekend.

FREE WORKSHOP WHETHER you are a professional athlete or weekend warrior, there will be something on the menu for you at the Free Nutrition Workshop South West Sport and Rec is holding at the Stanthorpe YMCA (Talc Street) on Tuesday 16 August. The workshop which will run from 6pm - 9pm will cover the fundamentals of sports nutrition focusing on how the correct diet can optimise your energy levels and help your body to recover quickly.

Good sports nutrition is about balancing the type and quantity of fluid and food taken by an athlete. Although an important part of many sports training regimens, it is most commonly considered in strength sports and endurance sports. However, whether you are a professional athlete or a ‘weekend warrior’, nutrition is fundamental to your athletic performance.

This workshop will look at food intake for training, hydration strategies, recovery practices and the Food for Sport program.

There will also be an opportunity to discuss sport specific questions and review related case studies.

CHILLY CONDITIONS RETURN IT WAS back to the chilly conditions for golf croquet last week, but despite the conditions the camaraderie and spirit of the games was warm.

Inglewood Roosters celebrated their first piece of silverware for two years when they overpowered the Tenterfield Tigers to win the President s Cup last Saturday. win. Golding’s good form continues and he top scored with seven hoops. He nudged out partner Marian Liddy who scored six hoops and shot one extraordinary hoop from a distance, skimming through the hoop without even kissing the sides of the hoop. This is something you rarely see in golf croquet as the hoop is only marginally wider than the ball.

In the second group, Val Fancourt and Liz Ellway scored a similar win with final scores 13-10 in their game against Shirley Page and John Castles. Val Fancourt had a remarkable eight hoop top score.

After the break, players were keen to get back on to the court for the second session.

Shirley Page partnered Liz Ellway in a game against Justin Liddy and Marian Castle and scored a 13-8 win. Liz Ellway top scored in this game with seven hoops. Bill Golding and Elaine Brown took on Val Fancourt and John Castles in the remaining game.

It was a win 13-9 win to Golding and Brown with a top score of seven hoops from Brown. It is pleasing to see our new members doing so well after a short time playing.

Those players that have recently joined the ranks are playing well. Members are looking forward to beginning a second session of games on Thursday afternoons. Members and anyone interested in finding out more about the game are invited to the courts on Thursday at 1.30pm.

The hardest worker at last weekend's working bee at the Inglewood Shooting Range was Ziggy on the job here searching for that leaking water pipe.

SPORTERS BACK WITH the Stanthorpe golf course closed last weekend for the invitation, only Landmark Golf Day Sporters were able to enjoy a morning of rest and relaxation and a lazy lie in last Sunday.

However, things are back to normal this weekend with tee off at the normal time of 8am - 8.30am.

Expect to see a big turnout of well rested golfers.

RUB OF THE GREEN FOR PLAYERS GATEBALL players certainly got the rub of the green when it came to conditions for mallet players last week with conditions on Friday ideal as players enjoyed the sun and no wind. Heather Widderick captained the white team, and with the support of Grace Howard, Bill Golding, Pat Schnoor and Margaret Dickenson just scraped home to win the first two games before the break.

The scores 9-8 and 12-10.

The red team of Joy Newman, Val Fancourt, Carol Verwey and John Draper with Les Williams as captain won the next game 14-9. The Whites were successful in the last game 17-9. Congratulations to team captains who did a great job.

Gateball is now being played on Saturday afternoon as well as the normal Friday morning games. Games kick off at 1.30pm on Saturday and new players or anyone interested in the game are always welcome to join the fun.

DAY OF FIRSTS IT WAS a day of firsts this week for the group at association croquet as six of the eight players successfully went through the first hoop. Val Shephard and Heather Widderick played Pat Schnoor who had four breaks of three in the pair’s score of 18, only to be overcome by a great game from Val Richardson who pegged out 26.

Margaret Dickenson and Effey Russell scored a 23-19 win over Carol Verwey and Joy Newman.

ROOSTERS CROWING AFTER a couple of seasons in the wilderness, the Inglewood Roosters were crowing loud and long last Saturday after picking up one of the most sought-after pieces of silverware in the BRL - the Patrons Cup. In a tough game, the Roosters defeated competition leaders the Tigers in a gutsy come-frombehind performance.

The Tigers looked to have one hand on the trophy at half time when they led 24-6 at half time.

Coach Brent Osbourne said after the game that the team lifted their discipline and intensity in the second half and the bench rotation worked well in the warmer conditions.

Tim West and Jamie Meddings were named the best on ground while Coedie Tandy again proved elusive for the Tigers who appeared to switch off in the second half and lacked intensity.

There are only two games left in the BRL fixtures, and this game looks likely to be repeated in the grand final.

Both sides will now be hunting wins in the final two games in an effort to host the major semifinal.

KILLARNEY CUP TAKE TWO OFFICIALS of the Warwick Turf club will be keeping a close eye on the weather forecast this weekend as they prepare for the rescheduled Killarney Cup on Saturday.

A beautiful morning greeted members today for the novelty fly shoot, with sunny skies and a light breeze. It was a good attendance with everyone enjoying the shoot and a barbecue afterwards.

A huge thank you to all who donated prizes for the multi draw raffle and to all who supported the cause as well as Debbie Wheeler who was the main organiser of the event. Her help was invaluable.
