By LUKE VOOGT A lack of public transport could leave footy fans stranded tonight (Friday) after possibly the biggest Cats game of the year in Geelong.

A public transport lobby group yesterday (Thursday) slammed the absence of bus services after Geelong night games.

Lack of Cats services ‘shocking’ “It’s very disappointing that local politicians, the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong Football Club all seem to be ignorant or uncaring about the problem�, said Paul Westcott, the spokesperson for the Public Transport Users Association’s Geelong branch.

Wet weather that closed Kardinia Park to car parking at the last two home games had worsened the public transport shortage, Mr Westcott said. “The banning of car access due to the boggy surface of Kardinia Park has highlighted the totally inadequate local

public transport for night games. “Although access to the ground was drastically reduced, there was no effort at all to provide an alternative.�

Mr Westcott called for bus services at both day and night games in Geelong.

“That would help ease parking problems permanently.�

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) ran trial buses after Geelong began hosting night matches in 2012 but stopped the service after just two matches, Mr Westcott said. “We were shocked that, after only two night games, PTV abandoned the bus services without any publicity.�

Decade after horrific sex attack, city thugs beaten

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A high-tech strategy to reduce alcohol-fuelled violence around central Geelong nightclubs has achieved success, according to stakeholders.

Hospitality, police and council representatives have declared victory over drunken thugs almost 10 years after a brutal sex assault inspired initiatives to make the city centre safer after dark.

Corio’s Luke Benjamin Gill was sentenced to 17 years’ jail after leaving his bloodied victim for dead in an alcove off Little Malop Street’s mall in December 2006.

The attack heightened ongoing calls for action on violence in central Geelong.

Venues responded with licence-scanning technology, live-monitored CCTV, inter-venue communication and shared lists of banned troublemakers.

The initiatives built on a Geelong Liquor Accord which was established in the 1990s, bringing together licensees, police and council to work on harm-minimisation strategies.

The anti-violence technology had been a success, said prominent local hospitality figure Darren Holroyd, who was a key player in development of the strategy as a leader of Geelong Nightlife Association.

“At that time the parties all got together - liquor licencing, police, council and the safety committee - and worked very hard on these systems,” Mr Holroyd said.

“Over the last few years they have made a big difference to the safety of patrons.”

Other stakeholders agreed with Mr Holroyd’s assessment.

The combination of the technology and liquor accord had allowed stakeholders to prevent violence before it escalated, said City Hall investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford.

The technology allowed venues and police to act on violence in real time, Mr Luxford said.

“It has absolutely made a difference.

“Each night there are about 10 situations on average we can intervene before the violence gets out of hand.

The ability for stakeholders to work and communicate together was a big success of the antiviolence strategy, said Geelong Liquor Licensing Sergeant Tim Bennett.

“It enables police to have an open forum between accord members to discuss current local issues from all sides of the table and work together

to resolve these problems,” Sgt Bennett said.

“This can be anything from trends in crime and anti-social behaviour through to various venues sharing between them successful strategies for staff and security to deal with problem patrons.”

Sixty-eight individuals are on the strategy’s banned list after violent incidents in city centre venues.

Woman missing without medicine for almost a month A Corio woman has been missing for almost a month without supplies for her medical condition, according to Victoria Police.

The disappearance of 61-year-old Vicki Heseltine prompted police to issue a call for public assistance to help find her.

“Vicki was last seen leaving her Princes Highway home about 8am on Saturday 2 July,” a Victoria Police statement said.

“She was last seen wearing a blue jumper, blue pants, blue shoes and a grey jacket with a faux fur hood.

“Police hold concerns for Vicki’s welfare as she suffers from a medical condition (requiring medication that) she does not have with her.

Ms Heseltine was known to frequent Corio Shopping Centre and “local licensed premises” the police statement said.

The statement asked anyone with information about her to phone Corio Police Station on 5273 9555.

Double Take A wind-power turbine atop Surf Coast Shire’s flashy headquarters is broken again.

The cause?

Wind damage.

Apparently the device struggles with high winds, a regular feature of coastal Victoria.

It’s at least the second time wind has damaged the fancy turbine since the office opened around four years ago. Surely the issue should have been fixed the first time, given the likelihood of more gusty days in the future.

City sell-off for gaol, water slides City Hall will sell historic Geelong Gaol and the site of Norlane’s water slides to make way for new health facilities, council administrators have announced.

Barwon Health would buy the gaol for additions to nearby University Hospital Geelong while the State Government would purchase the Waterworld land for a “state-of-the-art” medical facility to service northern Geelong.

The gaol deal would allow tenant Rotary to continue leasing part of the building as a tourist attraction for a minimum of 10 more years.

City Hall had four offers for the gaol but Barwon Health’s was “the best for the community and the site”, council administrators chair Dr Kathy Alexander said.

“Barwon Health is the dominant land user in this part of the city and Geelong’s largest employer.

“It has the resources and expertise to invest in the property and maximise its use,” Dr Alexander said.

“The health industry is one of the strongest growing sectors of the economy and will play a significant role in Geelong’s future both in terms of providing health services to our residents and as our largest employment sector.

“Barwon Health is currently the main tenant at the gaol, with the majority of the other tenants providing human services.”

Dr Alexander acknowledged the gaol’s historical significance but said its ongoing costs and

risks outweighed any public benefit from City ownership.

Rotary proposed developing the gaol for offices, a cafe, parking and a child care centre at a cost of $34m.

The other two submissions wanted the City to retain the gaol for use as a museum or events facility.

But Dr Alexander said the costs of converting the site were too high and would fail to “provide a sustainable long-term solution”.

The Waterworld deal would mean the loss of recreational facilities but allow development of a new health centre on the state’s preferred site, Dr Alexander said.

The centre would grow over the next 10 to 15

years to include various health and community services in a facility called Northern Arc. “The City has undertaken extensive stakeholder and community consultation on the master plan for this site,” Dr Alexander said.

“The City recognises that the Waterworld slides are iconic in Geelong.

“After consultation with stakeholders and assessment of the condition of the slide, toddlers pool and outdoor area, it was agreed that the use of this land to provide a health care facility in the northern suburbs of Geelong is a priority for both Barwon Health and the City of Greater Geelong.”

The rest of Waterworld would remain operational during the Northern Arc development.

Representatives from Deakin University and partner secondary schools from across Geelong gathered at Waurn Ponds last week to acknowledge the Aspire program’s successes.

Aspire provides weekly on-campus learning at Deakin’s Waterfront and Waurn Ponds campuses for up to 250 students from Years 6 to 10 at Northern Bay, Bellarine and Newcomb secondary colleges.

The program was a win-win for the students and Deakin pre-service teachers working on Aspire, said the university’s masters of applied learning and teaching course director.

“The secondary students take part in a curriculum designed and delivered by pre-service teachers studying at Deakin University as well as Deakin academics, current Deakin students, and industry partners,” Kellie Tobin said.

“It gives us the opportunity to highlight pathways to further study and show the kind of amazing careers that can come as a result of university study.”

Police are investigating the money’s disappearance from Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society, a not-for-profit organisation that runs the event.

Society president Sheree Seiffert said the best way for locals to help would be to pass through the gates.

Supporters could also make donations and additional sponsors were welcome, she said.

“It always helps to keep the competitions ticking along. We’ve had to tighten the budget with certain things but it will still be well worth coming to our family friendly show.”

Ms Seiffert declined to comment on the loss until police had finished their investigation.

A source said the amount missing was more than $100,000 but that the society had a “recovery plan in process”.

Sell-out success for ferry on trial

By LUKE VOOGT The sold-out Portarlington ferry embarked on its maiden voyage for Docklands on Friday, much to the delight of campaigners.

John Rae and Geoff Henderson have been working for nine years to bring a ferry to the peninsula and announced its first passenger trial last week.

“We are absolutely delighted by the public support,” Mr Rae said.

“We needed to fill this ferry to show the owners and the Government that there is a need for it - and we certainly did that.”

Tickets sold out in just 14 hours leaving a large waiting list, Mr Rae said. He anticipated another trial in the next two weeks.

“The excitement in town is just amazing - everyone is ringing me wanting tickets,” he said.

“This is another positive step towards gaining a ferry service to operate between Portarlington and Docklands.”

Mr Rae said the ferry had been identified as ‘number one’ from hundreds of projects listed by Portarlington residents nine years ago.

He said the ferry won’t have commuters on board, as it can’t depart until 10.30am due to its commitments at Wyndham Vale.

“But that has always been our aim, to have a commuter ferry running in the morning and back at night.”

Four hundred people will travel from Portarlington at 10.30am, reaching Docklands in 88 minutes, Mr Rae said.

He said Port Phillip Ferries, which owns the vessel, is working with the State Government to make the trip faster.

“If speed restrictions lifted on parts of the slow area, they would be able to take 15 minutes off the 88.”

Singing out for somebody with soul

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A one-of-a-kind musical experience is available to high school girls with a leading Geelong school band.

Soul outfit Sweethearts has called auditions for musicians to join the only local school band that offers scores toward subjects for attending rehearsals and playing shows.

Sweethearts musical director Michael Fitzgerald said the combination of industry experience with education was invaluable for students.

“We operate entirely in a music industry setting unlike most other school bands,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“All our shows are based in live music venues or festivals and girls come out of Sweethearts with a lot more confidence and belief in what they’re doing.”

Sweethearts gigs have extended beyond local

and interstate venues to shows in counties like Italy, the USA and France.

Members receive formal musical instruction as they complete certificate four in music with rehearsal and performance time contributing to VCE scores for senior students.

“It’s the only certificate of that level offered in Australia to school-aged students,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College established the band but it was open all girls as a means of increasing women’s participation in the music industry, he said.

“There’s still a lot of under representation of female artists. There’s a lot of work to be done but Sweethearts provides young female artists with a good insight into how the industry operates and a structured start in the industry.”

As well as giving residents a route to work, Mr Rae said the ferry could encourage people to visit the Bellarine’s “lovely wineries and restaurants”.

Combined with the State Government’s commitment to a $15 million safe harbour in Portarlington, he said it could encourage more people to move to the Bellarine.

“When that is completed the Government wants to have 100 berths in there - I think it’s just endless opportunities.”

Unlike daily trains to Melbourne, Mr Rae said, each passenger is guaranteed a seat by law.

“There are 400 seats and 400 lifejackets,” he said.

“They can use the Wi-Fi if they wish, have a coffee and not have to stand up - as they do on overcrowded trains.”

Essendon chairman Paul Little, who runs Port Phillip Ferries, said the trial phase was scheduled to conclude in August.

He said the company would make a decision with the State Government later that month and that early signs for Portarlington were encouraging.

“Wyndham, on the other hand, has been disappointing as solid demand needed for a regular service has not been there.”

Council opposes quarry near Lara

Geelong’s council administrators have knocked back controversial plans for a quarry near Lara that could create 65 jobs.

The administrators’ decision contrasted the opinion of “various state authorities” that decided against opposing the Bisinella application, according to a statement from City Hall.

City Hall received 240 written objections against the plan to quarry sand on two parcels of land covering 168 hectares of You Yangs foothills.

The quarry site was zoned for farming and subject to a significant landscape overlay covering the foothills, said council planning and development general manager Peter Bettess.

Tuesday night’s decision was based on a recommendation from a council-appointed committee that heard submissions on the quarry, he said.

The committee considered the proposal unsatisfactory, “particularly in terms of the economic, visual, amenity and traffic outcomes”.

The committee also believed that the plan had failed to pass a “high level of scrutiny”.

Council believed the committee’s recommendation “should be accepted (because) it had heard submissions from all parties, including the applicant, objectors and council officers”, Mr Bettess said.

Objectors mostly argued on environmental and amenity grounds, including concerns about additional truck traffic through Lara. Objectors included television personality Catirona Rowntree and her family, who live near the quarry site on Wooloomanata Station.

CONTROVERSY: A Lara developer wants to mind sand in the foothills of the You Yangs.

Bisinella advertising in support of its proposal said Wooloomanata was the nearest private property to the quarry site but still 1.2km away. The quarry would supply essential materials for local projects while creating up to 65 direct and indirect jobs, Bisinella stated, adding that a “widely respected ecological expert” had determined the site "had no flora and fauna significance".

The Geelong Indy has sought comment from Bisinella, including on whether the company plans to appeal council’s decision at the state’s planning tribunal.

The proposed quarry site is off Sandy Creek and Bacchus Marsh roads, Little River.

A new program is giving Geelong secondary students hands-on work experience in the public health system.

More than 30 Year 10 students from across Geelong will complete the Barwon Health program this month and next.

The practical nature of the program gave them valuable insights into careers in health care, said Geelong hospital clinical education and training director Yvonne Hewitt.

“Students get involved in a range of simulation activities so they can test out their interest and make informed decisions about their future career,” Ms Hewitt said.

“They interact with some very life-like mannequins and attempt to resuscitate them or dress their wounds from the point of view of a nurse.”

“They handle limbs for amputees crafted by prosthetists. They even get to birth a (mannequin) baby under the guidance of expert midwives.”

The experience was an eye-opener for North Bay College’s Courtney Bottrell, who was now reconsidering her future career.

“I signed up for this program because I wanted to be a paramedic,” Courtney said.

“But now after doing this birthing program I’m really thinking of becoming a midwife – I really just want to help people.”

App-y days for wi-fi world An event challenging IT experts to produce new apps with data supplied from government agencies has produced a map of free wi-fi around Geelong.

Deakin University students Daniel McCarthy and Parham Hausler were one of GovHack’s winning teams last year for their Free WiFi Geelong app.

The product is now available online, with regular site additions and an invitation for business offering free wi-fi to register for inclusion.

Mr McCarthy welcomed the chance to access government data through the GovHack competition.

“Open data for us is about lots of opportunities to test our skills, explore potential projects that the data owners don’t have time to do and show others what can be achieved,” Mr McCarthy said.

“The Free Geelong Wi-Fi project gave us a chance to extend the original GovHack idea and produce a real outcome for the community.”

The app is available at freewifigeelong.net.au GovHack returns to Geelong this weekend, with organisers hoping it can produce as many great results as last year’s inaugural event.

Entry is open to registered computer programmers and software developers wanting to use their IT skills to develop apps useful to everyday lives.

GovHack teams comprise four to five designers, developers, analysts, testers and storytellers using open data sets to solve problems, visualise information and create applications.

City Hall digital, information and technology manager Andrew Downie said the event was an opportunity to find solutions within existing data.

“The opportunity to have a specialised fresh set of eyes go over existing data can produce some innovative ideas and solutions,” he said.

“Both local experts, along with participants from across Australia and New Zealand, will sift through the data and also respond to some specific challenges that we have set and may come up with apps that will make our everyday life easier and improve council services.”

“We encourage any and all organisations to open up data, and this site can accommodate so

The City has released 105 datasets providing information on events, wi-fi, pet regulations, street trees, public barbecue locations, garbage collection zones and other facilities and services.

A company’s controversial plans for a goat farm and milk processing plant near Geelong has hit back at allegations of animal cruelty in the industry.

Geelong’s council administrators have approved Nuchev’s application to house up to 14,000 goats in barns at Moorabool and a further 4500 at the milkprocessing plant at Lara.

City Hall received more than 400 objections while an online petition to ban the dairy attracted over 2000 signatures. Objectors mostly cited animal welfare concerns such as the goats’ living conditions.

Nuchev chief executive officer Ben Dingle denied the development would be cruel to goats.

“We’re farmers ourselves and all farmers know to be a good farmer you need to love your animals,” he said. “That’s the core value of our stringent animal welfare policies that we have in place.”

The barns met Australian goat-farming standards and allowed natural behaviours, Mr Dingle said.

“The goats will be protected from predation and parasites that they’re exposed to when grazing.

“Our goats will be in large, spacious barns that allow them ample space to roam, to act naturally and to socialise with herd mates.

“Our approach is commonplace across dairy operations worldwide. However, our facility exceeds the facilities of most others in operation and we have gone a step further.”

Mr Dingle said he understood concerns about agricultural practices but said systems were changing due to consumer demand.

“Agriculture as a sector is responding to the enormous demand for trusted food and I want to make it clear this is certainly not a battery-farming situation.

“I’m confident that, once we’re up and running and do what we say we’re going to do and people do business with us and see how we behave, those concerns will dissipate.”

Objectors have 21 days to appeal at the state planning tribunal.

Fraser’s the type to beat diabetes He recently travelled to Morocco, could turn into a footy star and dreams of leading Australia.

So learning that Point Lonsdale teen Fraser Richards also has type one diabetes could come as a surprise.

The incurable, unpreventable illness presents few obstacles as the 17-year-old pursues his goals.

“Occasionally (it) stops me for about five minutes because I happen to have a hypo (low blood glucose event) and have to sit down and devour some jelly beans,” Fraser said.

“But it really doesn’t limit anything that I have and wanted to do – I travelled to Morocco in December, I play sport and I’m happy.

“I’ve got some pretty big dreams, such as being in the AFL or becoming the Prime Minister because it’s always good to dream.

Fraser, a St Ignatius Year 12 college student and talented footballer for Queenscliff, was among young people with type one diabetes at an event in Geelong last week to provide them with inspiration to overcome their illness.

Barwon Health’s annual Dream, Achieve, Succeed featured speakers such as Cats players and medical professionals.

Barwon Health’s Paediatric Diabetes Services has hosted the event over the past five years with the aim of helping young type one sufferers to achieve their dreams.

Fraser’s advice was to personally manage diabetes as well as possible.

“Everyone is different and by controlling your own diabetes is doesn’t become a problem in the present and later in life,” he said.

“It’s always going to be a bit of a hassle, and I’ll admit to that, but if you manage it properly and do as much as you can right then type one is never going to stop you from doing anything that you want to do.”

People like Fraser sharing their stories went a long way to helping others in the same situation, Barwon Health paediatrician Dr Chris Cooper said.

“Our event allows young people who live with type one diabetes to

come together socially and involve their families in an evening that both informs and inspires them to continue with a can-do attitude, not only with regards to their type-one management but also with regards to

other aspects of their lives.”

Geelong has been identified as a hotspot for types one and two diabetes.

In 2011, Diabetes Australia reported 11,000 cases of either type in the region.

Behind some really sweet jobs is a noble Endeavour The boss of one of Australia’s biggest agriculture industry groups has praised a foundation putting disabled people to work packing his sector’s products in Geelong.

Sugar Australia chief Richard Roberts said his organisation was “delighted” to be part of The Endeavour Foundation’s work at Norlane.

The foundation was providing “meaningful employment opportunities” for local disabled people, Mr Roberts said.

“We couldn’t be more pleased by the great job being done by the Endeavour Foundation team,” he said.

“The fact that we’re receiving a great service while enabling people with a disability to get out into the workplace and explore their potential, means that it’s an ideal outcome all round.”

The foundation has a long-standing arrangement with Mr Roberts’ organisation to package CSR sugar sticks, used nationally in cafes, workplaces and households.

Endeavour Foundation’s commercial manager Anthony Tavelli said supported employment such as the work undertaken at Norlane was a “fantastic way for people with a disability to develop new skills, grow in confidence and make friends”.

“Endeavour Foundation has a proud history of providing opportunities for people with a disability to contribute to the local economy and enhance their level of community involvement,” Mr Tavelli said.

“Through on-the-job experience you can gain recognised qualifications and enhance your skill set. These new experiences and relationships are a critical part of how connected we feel to the world in which we live, and how valued we feel by our community.

Biggest sails fest Geelong’s Festival of Sails has changed dates and incorporated a cycling event to become “bigger and better”, Royal Geelong Yacht Club has announced.

The change would “optimise the benefits of an earlier event with a consistent calendar spot in January while increasing opportunities for nonracing activities, the club said.

The festival would now run over nine days, with the Southern Hemisphere’s largest sailing regatta on the first day and a Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on the last.

Festival chairman Peter Alexander said the growing relationship between the two “hugely popular” events would create a “unique offering” for sports fans from 21 to 29 January.

“We’ve now moved our event into an effectively fixed slot a little earlier in January. This offers the real bonuses of being closer to the timing of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and concludes well clear of families preparing to get children back to school,” Mr Alexander said.

“We believe this change will appeal to Sydney to Hobart competitors to now consider sailing in Geelong and, along with a raft of new additions to our program, we’re confident the festival will become bigger and better.”

The festival attracts sailors from around Australia for competition to win trophy honours on Corio Bay. The club said more than 100,000 patrons attended the annual event, which includes onshore live entertainment, market stalls, family activities and carnival atmosphere.

Soccer clubs aiming for shared goal

Shorten deploys Marles as army shadow Geelong’s Federal Labor MP has achieved what his Liberal counterpart could not: a post-election promotion.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten this week unveiled his shadow ministry with Richard Marles as Defence spokesperson.

Shadow Foreign Minister before the election, the Corio MP was elevated after achieving an increased margin in his safe seat at this month’s federal poll.

In contrast, Liberal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson was overlooked for promotion despite retaining her seat with a smaller swing away than the national result.

Mr Marles’ appointment as Shadow Defence Minister was a “great privilege”, he said.

“I look forward to working with Defence, the government and the various PROMOTED: Richard Marles. related community organisations and institutions in ensuring Australia’s security.

“Labor is committed to fostering a strong, viable and long-term domestic defence industry.

“We will continue to work to ensure Australia retains a world-class defence force and innovative defence industry.”

Mr Marles “always had the utmost respect for those who have served and are currently serving our nation”, he said.

“I am committed to ensuring our ADF personnel and their families are properly supported.

“I acknowledge my predecessor, Stephen Conroy, for his hard work in this portfolio and thank Bill Shorten for the opportunity to serve the Labor Party in this role.”

Mr Marles has been Corio MP since rolling Gavan O’Connor for pre-selection before the 2007 election.

Mr Marles was Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs and also for Foreign Affairs between 2012 and 2013 before his rise to a shadow ministry.

North Geelong Warriors is branching out to community development in collaboration with local clubs after an eventful 2015 in National Premier League Victoria.

The club has this year widened its focus to building relationships and identifying how to help clubs with operations both on and off the park.

New club Leopold FC was an obvious beneficiary, with Warriors figures Michael Anderson and Josip Zilic recently meeting Leopold’s Mitch Vials to discuss its opportunity to provide the town with a valuable community service.

The group discussed how the club’s reserve, in Leopold’s Estuary estate, could become a local sports hub with support from Football Federation of Victoria and City of Greater Geelong to deliver lights for training.

Vials said that in the meantime Leopold FC’s base for senior football would be Howard Glover

Reserve, while the town’s primary school could provide a temporary facility for juniors.

Further discussion centred on how the Warriors could help with training plans, coach education and advice on grants and fund-raising.

“Mitch and his team deserve and applause for the brave step of stepping into the administration of a brand new club,” Zilic said.

“It isn’t easy but when you can build these networks and align the initiatives to the regional planning then it makes life easier for all clubs knowing there are others there to help and listen.”

Vials said Leopold FC priorities included fund-raising, coach recruitment and education.

The Warriors planned to develop a shared list of information for Leopold and other clubs “wishing to leverage off our learnings”, Zilic said.

“Hopefully that’s a good start to initiate their development and take them to the next step.”

PTV deserts Cats fans When night football began at Kardinia Park in 2013 there was no local public transport available to footy patrons after night games finished.

The Geelong branch of the Public Transport Users Association ran a campaign to have bus services provided after night matches. At the very last minute, Public Transport Victoria (PTV) agreed to provide some services on a trial basis.

I was shocked to discover that, after only two night games, PTV abandoned the bus services without any publicity, apparently deciding that patronage hadn’t been sufficient.

The unacceptable lack of local public transport for night games has now been made more obvious.

The banning of car access to Kardinia Park due to the wet weather further limits transport options for football spectators.

It is incredible that an allegedly world-class stadium does not have usable public transport for all patrons, irrespective of whether events are during the night or day.

Jury unconstitutional I wrote in last week’s Indy about the proposed 100-person jury to adjudicate governance events around Geelong.

What I omitted, due to space considerations, was that this attempt at subverting our democracy might be cause for a constitutional challenge.

Any attempt to change the way we are governed must be via Section 128 of the Australian Constitution and its election process.

City of Greater Geelong has been duly informed that it does not have constitutional recognition, via the negative results of two referendums, and that it is not a lawful tier of government.

State Government has no right to attempt to subvert the Constitution, as it would in appointing newDemocracy Foundation to panel-beat a new way of governing.

All government is by lawful consent of the people, not by private arrangements, as I alluded to in last week’s letter.

And it must remain that way until a referendum of the people approves any such change.

After all, it is the hapless people who foot all the bills.

Shame of the goats Geelong’s council administrators again followed protocols and totally ignored 447 written objections and 20 or more speakers who covered a multitude of valid reasons why goat camps should not be set up in their proposed locations in Lara and Lovely Banks.

These innocent beings will be crammed 14,000 and 4900 into unsanitary sheds, repeatedly impregnated by force and have their babies taken away at birth and killed because they will be considered wastage.

This is how goat milk continues to be produced, as in other animal practices. It’s totally abhorrent.

Hole lot of conspiracy Tim Saclier is convinced global warming is a hoax (Letters, 22 July).

To prove it he invited readers to Google ’the 97% consensus myth’.

In truth, he was just funnelling readers to conspiracy websites, of which there is no shortage.

They are a whole alternative reality where everything and every claim by climate scientists are not just wrong but will destroy our economies if we even think about them.

And everything about spewing CO2 into the atmosphere and business as usual is right and will green the world and provide wealth for all.

How can the decades of climate science and mounting evidence, not to mention the basic physics going back to the 1800s, be so wrong?

There seems only one possibility: it’s a giant conspiracy perpetrated by elites, those in power, greens, reptile people or some other hidden people. Or maybe the science simply is right.

Real scientists and people with real skin in the game don’t waste their time arguing with conspiracy theorists in forums such as this. They simply get on with the job, just like researchers in other fields such as medicine.

But watch out: anyone who goes down a conspiracy rabbit hole might never come out.

It seems many don’t.

CO2 is not some sort of thermal blanket trapping heat, it’s a regulator of heat. We are constantly told about the positive feedback of CO2 but it also has a negative function, shielding Earth from the sun’s powerful rays.

The benefits of CO2 outweigh the negatives, it is necessary for life to exist and, colourless and odourless, it can’t be labelled a pollutant.

Australian’s CO2 footprint is 1.5 per cent of global emissions, equivalent to one molecule of atmosphere in 5.7 million. The carbon tax was meant to achieve a reduction to one in six million - crazy! All the hoopla on CO2 emissions and renewable energy targets might make tree huggers feel good but it won’t do anything for the planet, just send a wrecking ball through the economy.

Stress of war in compelling play The terror of war and its aftermath for soldiers shape the script of a confronting play on the way to Drysdale next month.

Foxholes of the Mind draws on the accounts of former servicemen struggling to cope with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from experiences in theatres of battle stretching from Vietnam to Iraq.

The play is the work of Bernard Clancy, a playwright, author and journalist with personal experiences of PTSD. “I originally wrote Foxholes because I wanted to highlight the tragedy of PTSD, to try to stop the terrible waste and destruction of the human spirit that PTSD entails,” Clancy explained ahead of its local performances.

Foxholes premiered at Carlton’s famous La Mama theatre in 2010, drawing virtually full houses.

The production had a “profound effect on veterans, wives and families”, its promoters said, while earning acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

This 2016 production has been rewritten to include the voice of younger veterans. “It’s a rough ride, however, as they fearfully face the demons of their past. And yet they still have a sense of humour, black though it may be at times,” Clancy said.

He described the impact of PTSD on Australian soldiers as a “compelling and somewhat frightening story”.

“After talking with younger veterans over the past few years I came to the shocking realisation

that the PTSD problem is getting worse, much worse,” Clancy said.

“I needed to include the voice of the younger veteran, to highlight the cry for help from our young men and women who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.”

Wolf Heidecker and his production company, Larrikin Ensemble Theatre, has returned to direct the updated version of Foxholes.

Most of the original cast who drew standing ovations at La Mama would also return, the promoters said.

The production has the support of Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service, whose director praised Foxholes.

“There’s a message of hope and strength that clearly comes through,” Ann O’Kane said.

“This is a key ingredient that will assist veterans and family members to have the courage to step forward to seek help. If the play is seen by more Australians, particularly health professionals, the raised awareness of the issues will be of immense benefit.”

Foxholes of the Mind also has support from Victorian Veterans’ Council, Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated Ex-Servicemen and Women Association Victoria, City of Greater Geelong, the RSL and private philanthropists.

The show plays Drysdale’s Potato Shed 7.30pm from 9 to 13 August, with a 3.30pm matinee on 14 August.

Local songwriters will come together next month to celebrate the history of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula through music and visual effects.

‘The Call of Home’ will feature live musical performances from Mike Whittle, Jill Meehan and Gypsy Smash with a historical photo projection show accompanied by spoken word history.

Focusing on the history of the people and places of the Geelong and Bellarine peninsula, The Call of Home will be a local folklore exploration across many musical styles.

Mike Whittle shot to fame in 2010 when he wrote ‘The Last Man from Dunolly’, a song about the men who served in the Battle of Fromelles who were being re-interred in a new cemetery in France.

Mr Whittle’s song was featured on the ABC

with Ian McNamara and made it onto Macca’s top 100 songs from 30 years of the ‘All about Australia’ program.

Since then Mr Whittle has written many more songs about the Geelong area and wanted a chance to perform them alongside other local musicians.

Mr Whittle said the three musical acts shared a love of local stories and aimed to tell these stories through their music.

“I thought there are fellow songwriters around here, why not get together have a great time and share the material inspired by the local scenario?” he said.

The Call of Home will be held at the Courthouse Theatre in Geelong on Friday 12 August, from 7pm.

Melt butter and cool slightly, add all ingredients together in a bowl and beat on high for 3 minutes. Pour into 2 greased and lined 20cm cake tins and bake in mod oven for 35 minutes. Cool cakes on wire then place in fridge to firm up for half an hour. Fill with whipped cream and make chocolate topping by combining 60gm unsalted butter and 60gm chocolate over low heat until mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool until it becomes spreadable then spread over top of cake.

Flavours of Europe Mauritius-born chef Bryan Seeborun is bringing the flavours of Europe to Croatian Club Geelong.

The club’s head chef says he’s inspired by his travels and working at restaurants around Europe.

Bryan’s family migrated to England in 2000.

He travelled across the channel, after graduating university in 2004, working as head chef at a Michelin Star restaurant in the south of France.

He returned to England a year later working as a chef in Kent, and cooking for the Ministry of Defence, among other jobs.

He travelled to Australia in 2014 and liked the country so much he moved to Broken Hill that October.

He moved to Torquay this year, starting at the Croatian Club in March.

“This place was a big opportunity to put my skills on show and so far I’m very happy,” he said.

Bryan says Croatian Fish Night on Friday is a

big event for regulars, with hundreds crowding the bistro.

“It’s a very friendly community and they really welcomed me even though I’ve got a different background,” he said.

Bryan’s created a new menu for the club, which includes Croatian favourites such as sarma, cevapcici and goulash.

He’s also got the Aussie pub staples covered, with schnitzels on Tuesday, steaks on Wednesday and roast on Sunday.

Bryan’s looking forward to this month’s Euro 2016 and hopes to watch a few of the games which the club will televise live.

“I played for my national (Mauritius) under 21 team, before I got injured,” he says.

The club is open Tuesday to Friday, 12pm to 2pm and 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and Sunday 12pm to 2.30pm.

Scott said the Cats were acutely aware of the psychological impact on teams from significant injuries, referring to plays like Daniel Menzel who “missed four years”.

“Players at AFL level are challenged daily. I imagine (the Bulldogs’) talk internally would be about being professional ... to move on and play the best footy.”

Cats coach Chris Scott expects an emotioncharged match when the Dogs play Geelong at Simonds Stadium this Friday night.

Scott acknowledged the excitement surrounding milestone games for Cat stars Corey Enright and Jimmy Bartel but believed the Dogs would also be “wound up” after two bad injuries last week.

Enright will set a games record for Geelong, in his 326th match for the Cats, while Bartel will play game 300.

“It’s fantastic in a way that two guys are sharing it (and) they’ve got some much shared experience,” Scott told Wednesday’s media conference.

“To enjoy so much success together (and) for the football world to acknowledge it on the same day is fitting.”

In contrast to the Geelong celebrations, the Bulldogs will be without young gun Mitch Wallis, who suffered a horrifically broken leg last weekend, or big forward Jack Redpath after he wrecked a knee for the third time.

Scott noted the likely emotional aspect of the match for both teams, although he expected “maximum effort every week”.

“Sometimes there is a risk that you get too emotionally wound up,” he said.

“But the Bulldogs have go challenges as well, so I would expect they’ll be wound up.

Salmon were caught along the coast, with Bancoora Beach the most consistent location. Bait anglers had success with blue bait and pippies, while lures that did the job included the Norestream Baitfish, Asari Mahi and Sea Iron Pelacus.

When the weather turned rough, Grey River offered a relatively sheltered rock platform that produced salmon to 3kg.

Tuna continued to feature down Portland way, with large 100kg fish taken when the weather allowed. The most productive area was between Capes Nelson and Bridgewater, with the tuna gorging on pilchards pushing into the bay between the two points.

Some of the more productive lures were the Tornado T7 and the Pakula Sprocket in the Fallen Angel colour.

Fishing the bottom in 40m to 80m produced some quality gummy sharks, snapper and assorted bottom fish that offered excellent table fare.

Winter snapper remained the target of many an angler. Andrew Tan took advantage of a day of

fine weather to fish around Mt Martha, where he was soon rewarded for his trip across the bay with an awesome fish of 10kg after a short tussle.

Corio Bay produced similar fish, with successful anglers fishing at anchor, laying berley trails of chopped pilchards and using silver whiting or pilchard baits with little or no weight.

Whiting showed no sign of slowing down between Queenscliff and St Leonards. The strong tide around Queenscliff requires leaders of 1m to 2m or so baits that can be presented as naturally as possible.

Fresh squid and cuttlefish were the most popular baits.

The Barwon River’s carp were a great option for Andrew Whitford, who took daughter Emily fishing with him. Using bread for bait, Emily landed an awesome fish of 5.8kg on 1kg line, while dad managed some to over 7kg in recent weeks. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing awesome fish. Tim Beusmans fished off the rock wall last Friday, lancing a brown trout of 57cm and 2.49kg after a short but spirited battle.

Redfin to 50cm were also taken on lures such as the Nories metal Wasabi and Strike Pro Bob n Spoon.
