Finals showdown By DAVID NAGEL and RUSSELL BENNETT A BITTER war of words has erupted - and an even bigger war is brewing - after the Pakenham Football Club launched an audacious bid to snatch this season’s Ellinbank and District Football League grand final. Pakenham, one of the South East Football Netball League’s flagship clubs, submitted a proposal to the EDFL in response to its failure to lure the SEFNL grand final to its home base at Toomuc Reserve. Officer will once again host the SEFNL grand final after conducting a very successful running of the event last year. If Pakenham’s proposal is successful, it will mean the two biggest football leagues in the region will host their showcase events on the same day - and just five kilometres apart. SEFNL chairman Kahl Heinze cut loose at Pakenham for what he said was a selfish attitude to football and netball in the region. “In my opinion their (Pakenham) behaviour in regards to this has been childish, petulant, selfish, and extremely disrespectful to all of the SEFNL clubs and the broader SEFNL community,” Heinze said. EDFL president Roger Gwynne made his own thoughts on the issue perfectly clear. “Why would we want Pakenham?” he said. “Why wouldn’t we use our own grounds? “They want the gate, the bar, and the canteen ... they don’t want much, do they? “They sent at least a 10-page submission to us and it will be discussed in about 15 seconds.” Gwynne said the matter would be raised at a meeting tonight (Wednesday), but he said - in his mind - “it’d

He said issues with transport, security and available police would pose no end of problems, adding “I’m not even suggesting we look at it”. Gwynne said EDFL fans could expect this season’s finals series to be played at a smaller section of grounds capable of hosting multiple finals. The Gazette understands that Garfield barring anything unforeseen - will host the 2016 deciders. The Pakenham Football Club has responded to Gwynne’s claims, saying they are factually incorrect.

“The Pakenham Football Club, after consulting with the EDFL, was well aware the finals beverage package had been awarded to the Dusties (Warragul Industrials) for the finals of 2016,” the club commented on its website. “In our submission, we noted that the Dusties could honour that contract and the EDFL would control the gate, security, and collect those moneys as per normal finals series. Lady tradie for sisterhood By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IF YOU’RE a Casey commuter, you’d know Danielle Kazi-Shedden’s face. She’s the Cranbourne tradie showing up the boys and catching the eyes of passersby in Berwick and Pakenham. She’s Chisholm Institute’s poster girl, for all the right reasons. Danielle, 25, is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She is living proof of the changing face of women in the workforce, on the sporting field and at the altar. A lesbian and soon-to-be mum, Danielle has a shelf dedicated to her trophies. Last year she won Chisholm’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was then nominated for a Master Builders’ award. To many people’s surprise Danielle, a shopfitter, keeps beating the boys. “I won the overall Joinery Apprentice of the Year, Metro Apprentice of the Year, and Victorian State Apprentice of the Year. That was last year, in April,” she said. “They were all clapping and being supportive at the awards ceremony but you could tell that when they called out my name everyone was a bit taken aback. “People said to me well done and everything but in that tone that they were really surprised, like I must have been very good to beat all of the boys - I just thought I worked to a winning standard.” Danielle met her wife, Alyssa on the football field - both of them, passionate about AFL, gay rights and starting a family. So much so that Alyssa has started a Facebook page for LGBT parents in the Casey region. “I’ve already got 60 followers,”

But the page is no laughing matter, Danielle and Alyssa both want to see a broader acceptance of same sex parenting by the time their son is of school age. “I don’t want other mums to say that they don’t want their child to hang out with my son because he has two mums,” Alyssa said. “I started the Facebook page two weeks ago to give gay parents a place to speak openly about things

without being judged.” The online parenting support page is called ‘The LGBT mums, dads and supporters’. Alyssa and Danielle have also used the page to respond to queries from other lesbian couples about home insemination. The couple were lucky enough to get sperm donated to them and inseminate at home, using a kit bought online from the US. Alyssa is six months pregnant.

Danielle also has an online presence through Instagram. “I made a photo blog to document our journey, it’s called ‘Life with 2 Mums’,” Danielle said. “It’s so we can share our highs and lows throughout the pregnancy and because people were so interested in the process of home insemination,” Danielle said. The pair are as close to being married as possible in Australia and had a commitment ceremony two years ago.

No go on servo By ALANA MITCHELSON MORE than 400 residents have expressed their objections to a proposed service station on Racecourse Road, beside the Cardinia Waters Village entrance. Plans show that, if successful, the development would feature a Liberty Oil petrol station, a convenience store, restaurant and 12 car parking spaces. The site is currently a vacant block of land directly adjacent to the Cardinia Waters retirement village. Cardinia Waters resident Valerie West said she was concerned that the petrol station’s proximity would attract undesirables to the retirement village. “It’s upsetting everybody in the village. Residents are quite irate,” the 71-year-old said.

“It’s so close to our major entrance - getting out is hard at the best of times what with the trains and the traffic, so I think that will be a nightmare. I’m worried that if there was a major emergency, we wouldn’t be able to get out. “We’re concerned about undesirable activity, and rubbish and safety. Everybody’s over 55 in the village and we might be vulnerable. “It’ll also affect the milk bar business down the road. Half the village goes there for the paper and the milk every morning. And there’s already a 7/11 being built just up the road.” Ms West said she presented the council with 404 signatures from Cardinia Waters residents against the planning proposal. “But council told me that signatures alone were not enough, which

was a real disappointment. Only petitions where residents had written their exact concerns down were counted as formal objections,” Ms West said. “Some people are happy for it to go ahead but the majority don’t want it.” Cardinia Shire development and compliance services manager Debbie Tyson said the council had recorded more than 60 objections and two letters of support for the proposed development. She said resident submissions could be lodged until a decision was made on the application. “Due to the number of objections, any decision made by the council will need to be done at a council meeting,” Ms Tyson said. “The application has not yet been determined and is still under consid-

Council is currently waiting on internal and external referral responses before proceeding. “The assessment process will consider the issues and concerns raised in the submissions lodged by residents.” The applicant, Ornoc manager Michael Israel, said the development would benefit the whole community in the long-term. “Pakenham is a growth area and we thought it would be a good idea to provide an essential service,” Mr Israel said. “It will create eight to 12 jobs, possibly more. “There are elderly in the area who will be able to walk to the shops which will be convenient. “We have very strict safety requirements.”

ALL number plates should be sold with one-way screws, according to a leading Cardinia crime prevention figure. Victoria Police crime figures show that number plate thefts increased by more than 70 per cent in Cardinia over the past year, with 170 plates stolen between April 2015 and March this year. Neighbourhood Watch Cardinia’s David Farrelly said the theft of number plates from parked cars was one of the most common crimes in Australia. “Stolen number plates facilitate so many more crimes aside from the theft itself, like burglaries and petrol drive-offs," Mr Farrelly said. “One-way screws secured to plates on cars could prevent so many crimes. And anyone can do it. “I’ve found criminals are generally quite lazy and go for the easy target. One-way screws are extremely difficult to take off. “Every number plate sold should be sold with one-way screws. I think we’ll see that one day. But until that does happen it will be up to individuals." VicRoads director of registration and licensing practice Helen Lindner said they were in discussions with Victoria Police to tackle the problem. “VicRoads is currently working with Victoria Police to understand the complexity around the misuse of number plates in Victoria," Ms Lindner said. “We have undertaken research both nationally and internationally on the use of tamper-proof plates and are also investigating other options." VicRoads advised that drivers should report stolen number plates immediately to Victoria Police to assist investigations.

Lights are switching on By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS UNTIL the light globe comes on, a lot of men and women don’t understand what family violence really is, says Hallam-based counsellor David Nugent. There’s a common myth that family violence is just about being a “wife basher” or “smashing up the house”. But it’s also non-physical abuse and manipulation which is often tolerated inside a family home, Mr Nugent said. “There’s a lot of men who know things aren’t right at home and are not sure what to do. “The wife and children are walking on eggshells around the man. “She makes the excuses for his anger that he’s stressed, tired or the kids are annoying. But it just gets worse and worse.” The cycle builds. The son moves back home in his 20s and starts abusing his mother. Or as Mr Nugent puts it: “Little Johnny is just like his father.” Mr Nugent and his Heavy METAL (Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life) group wants “mums and dads” to pack Hallam Senior College theatre next month for a full-feature version of a documentary Call Me Dad. The doco is a rare look inside Mr Nugent’s men’s behaviour change groups and women support groups. It shows more than a few light bulb moments when the men “finally get it”. Sometimes it’s when the man catches themselves during a domestic argument, such as a fight over buying new curtains. Then the man listens to his partner and they discuss the situation. She points out it’s OK for him to go to Bunnings and buy tools. Buying

Casey has the most reported family violence in the state, according to police statistics. Mr Nugent hopes the documentary will inspire many men and women to seek help and change.

“This is a community problem, and it needs to be solved in the community.” When the doco’s shorter version aired on ABC last year, men from around Australia called Mr Nugent to tell them they could relate to it. These were men who weren’t nec-

essarily physically violent but who broke down in tears when they realised what they’re doing to their partners and children. They couldn’t believe they were such manipulative “arseholes”. Mr Nugent describes himself as once a “violent and angry” person,

and still “working on it”. When he saw the light back in 1984, he founded Heavy METAL. His weekly men’s and women’s groups “soldier on” without government funding. Attendees come from as far as the western suburbs, one even flew in weekly from Sydney. There are men’s groups in Adelaide and Perth that are run through Skype. Women are also helped to build self-esteem, draw boundaries, and learn about the impact of emotional abuse. Mr Nugent, who also works with students at Hallam Senior College, has marshalled year 11s to raise funds for female victims of family violence. He wants to help educate teenage boys to express themselves better when they get angry or are not getting their way. He addresses those boys who call girls their “bitches” or request girls to send nude pictures of themselves before they go out with them – and then treat them like rubbish. He said boys think they only have an anger problem when they explode at their girlfriend for talking to other boys. They think their girlfriends are their property and this attitude is a seed for something worse when they are adults. “It’s best to get to them early,” Mr Nugent said. The screening is at Hallam Senior College on 26 August, 7-10pm followed by a question and answer community panel. difficult time puts lives at risk. “You can’t just say he was upset and wanted to do a burnout.” Another offender Luke Close on a suspended jail sentence at the time - had his sentencing adjourned. Due to a migraine, a psychologist was unable to testify on whether Close’s moral culpability was reduced due to a close family bereavement at the time. Both Stacey and Close face sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 August.

Casey Council's double-storey dilemma By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DEVELOPER is fighting Casey Council’s refusal of a 12 double-storey house development on the banks of a Berwick Springs floodplain. The site 75S Moondarra Drive is on the west side of the drive, between houses to the east and the wetlands, which is part of the Melbourne Water-controlled Ti Tree Creek retarding basin. Casey Council refused the development in April, primarily due to

the objection of Melbourne Water. Among the water authority’s criticisms was the reduction in the retarding basin’s flood storage capacity due to the development’s inadequate setback. The council also noted that the site was subject to Aboriginal cultural heritage, but the developer Grandrise failed to lodge an Aboriginal cultural heritage plan. Grandrise has since lodged an objection to the Victorian Civil and

Administrative Tribunal. In a preliminary hearing this month, the tribunal’s member Susan Whitney adjourned on the question of whether an Aboriginal cultural heritage management plan was required. “It was not in dispute that the proposal to construct 12 dwellings on the subject land triggered the requirement to prepare a (plan) as the subject land is within an area of cultural heritage sensitivity and the activity is deemed to be a high impact

Ms Whitney ruled Grandrise couldn’t rely on an earlier archaeological survey of a larger tract of land - that includes 75S Moondarra Drive - to be exempt from lodging the cultural heritage plan. She adjourned the hearing to allow Grandrise to decide on whether to pursue its opposition to the cultural heritage plan on the basis of alleged “significant ground disturbance” on the site.

A SOUTH East Skids hoon who performed fast circle burnouts with a passenger half-out the car’s window has been told by a magistrate it’s “one of the worst acts of driving” captured by Operation Regarder police. P-plater Jack Stacey, 21, told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 July that he couldn’t remember the identity of the rear male passenger during the 20-second burnouts - despite the passenger apparently filmed hanging out of the car at two separate meets. The passenger high-fived bystanders as Stacey’s 2012 Falcon exited the skid bowl in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South, about 1.08am on 9 December. At the time there were more than 100 drivers and spectators lining the public road bowl. On viewing covert video, magistrate Jack Vandersteen observed a passenger also hung out of Stacey’s car window during a different South East Skids meet at the same place on 18 December. “It looks like the same person.”

A MAN gained some notoriety for doing a runner in front of news crews after being sentenced to 14 days’ jail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 July. The man and his police pursuers sprinted from the courthouse, miraculously between moving traffic on Foster Street before the man’s shoes fell off. At the 200-metre mark, he took a fighting stance to the leading police officer, who tackled him to ground until reinforcements arrived. The Kilsyth carpet-layer appeared back in court that day, bearing a large scuff-mark to his temple as well as a greasy stare for his apprehending officer watching on from the gallery. His defence lawyer pointed out that the ADHD-afflicted man struggled to think through situations. If he had paused, he could have contested the jail term for repeated intervention order breaches and been out on appeal bail. Appeal bail was now unlikely since he was a proven “flight risk”, the lawyer conceded. The man was found guilty of escaping from lawful custody and sentenced to a further 31 days’ jail on top of his original term. The forementioned chase created a degree of chatter in the judicial ranks. Shortly afterwards a magistrate asked a police prosecutor why he hadn’t joined in the “running”. The prosecutor gave him a blank look, and motioned that the comment went over his head. A 17-YEAR-OLD boy was fairly confident of his chances of bail after being arrested after fleeing from a stolen car in Cranbourne East. A Children’s Court hearing heard the boy allegedly told police officers “he didn’t care what happens because he’ll get released anyway”. Suffice to say he wasn’t pleased when the magistrate refused to grant him bail partly because of a lack of supports to stop him re-offending. As the boy was led back to the cells, he screamed in frustration. Maybe the word he was looking for was “Doh!”. MEANWHILE two other accused car thieves had their Children’s Court hearing adjourned because at least one of them refused to get on the bus at their detention facility. The 16-year-old girls had been arrested in an alleged stolen car in Dandenong the day before. They were accused of several offences including aggravated burglary and robbery in Berwick, Dandenong, Lynbrook, Drouin and Longwarry in the past two months. The case was adjourned to the following day.

Lack of infrastructure THERE is an ‘urgent’ long overdue concern with the development of ‘Alira Berwick’ around Centre Road Berwick and the infrastructure required. For 10 years I have been an owner occupier in this area and I am totally shocked at the prospect of 800 homes with roughly two motor vehicles to each home (1600) and the lack of infrastructure planned by the responsible bodies. I wish to make it quite clear it is not the development that concerns me, it is the lack of forethought for the infrastructure to go with it! Congestion is a current problem; the addition of these 800 homes and 1600 motor vehicles without proper infrastructure is catastrophic! 1. Homestead/Clyde Roads – congestion; no right turn from Homestead Road (safety reasons). 2. Homestead/Centre Roads – Homestead currently unmade T-intersection into Centre Road. 3. Centre/Clyde Roads – traffic lights; congestion from Centre Road. 4. Centre/Cranbourne-Narre Warren Roads – traffic lights; congestion from Centre Road. 5. Domain/Greaves Road – congestion from Domain Road. 6. Greaves/Cranbourne-Narre Warren Roads – traffic lights: recently upgraded! 7. A WOMAN, wanted on an arrest warrant, made a slightly dopey error as she handed herself at Springvale police station. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that upon her arrest, the woman was found with ice in a syringe and cannabis in her pocket. The woman, who had been on bail at the time for trafficking ice, burglary and cannabis possession, told police she was “clean”. The drugs found on her were supposedly a reminder to her not to use again - an excuse that the magistrate found unconvincing. Taking into account her surrender to police, she was released on bail on strict night curfew and daily reporting conditions. CRIME fuelled by fuel has cops concerned. And they’ve spoken out on Facebook to help stop petrol station car thefts. Casey police have put out a reminder to anyone paying for petrol, to lock their car and keep their keys on them during the short walk to and from the register. The reminder posted on the Eyewatch Facebook page said: “Don’t leave your keys in your car!”

A NARRE Warren man addicted to synthetic cannabis has been jailed after strangling his wheelchairbound brother, trashing the family home and pawning off his mother’s belongings. The man flew into a rage at the family home in May after his mother left him $20 for cigarettes instead of $25, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 25 July. During his pique, he put two hands on his brother’s neck for about a minute, broke a glass picture frame, threw living room items and attacked a disability meal table and wooden cabinet with a hammer. The man then used duct tape to cover his brother’s mouth and nose and bind his hands. He poked the brother several times in the stomach with the “sharp end” of a broomstick and hit his brother in an area in which he had no feeling.

The man later told police that his brother was “no angel” and “the biggest c*** the world ever knew”. “He can’t use his legs but makes sure he can use his arms,” he told police. He bound the brother with duct tape so “he’d shut the f*** up”. The mother didn’t arrive home until half-an-hour after the tirade started. The man then tore down a dividing door in the hallway and started throwing half-lit cigarettes around the house. His mother told police she was awake until the early hours of next day, fearing the man would enact his threats to burn down the house. The man left for some time, sleeping in his car in public reserves and police were unable to find him. He returned to the family home in the meantime, removing a side sliding door, and kicking in another deadlocked door. On eight separate visits to a Cash

Converters store in April and May, the man pawned off about $2500 of his mother’s goods, including a camera, two vacuum cleaners, a TV and power tools. On several occasions, he received a loan of just $5 for the goods, including for his brother’s $200 disability exercise equipment. After his arrest in June, he repeatedly defied CREDIT bail by staying at his grandmother’s Menzies Creek house. He pawned off her $140 pressure-cleaner, $200 pruner and $310 of other garden tools. Despite a full intervention order, he also broke into his mother’s shed, and stole and pawned off her lawn mower. The man soon after admitted himself to Casey Hospital for 11 days before his arrest on discharge on 18 July. The man, diagnosed with depressive symptoms, told police he could

only remember “bits and pieces” from the past few weeks. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man had “very significant mental health issues compounded by your drug use”. “When you were first taken into custody you were very unwell, very erratic and not appreciating the seriousness of what you were facing.” Mr Vandersteen noted the mother lost an “enormous amount” of goods; the nature of the thefts meant they wouldn’t be covered by insurance. “I wish Cash Converters would stop you bringing all these things in. You would think it was obvious to someone there. “It’s that cumulative effect on your family. Your mother would just want her son back, your brother would just want his brother back.” The man was jailed five months and put on a 12-month community correction order, including drug and mental health treatment.

THERE ain't no mountain high enough for 33-year-old Berwick gym regular Colin Donald. Mr Donald, once a physical wreck, is registered for the world’s highest marathon on Mt Everest in May next year. It’s remarkable that he is on his feet at all after a critical motorbike crash 14 years ago that severed an artery, and shattered his leg and pelvis. The Belgrave tradie was told by onlookers on Eastern Freeway at the time that his bike was clipped by a car causing him and his bike to strike the rear of a hatch and launch metres in the air. As he lay in Royal Melbourne Hospital heavily dosed on painkillers, doctors advised Mr Donald’s mother that his left leg has to be amputated. Otherwise, he will not walk again, the experts told her. Fortunately, she refused. She said it was up to Mr Donald to make the decision. “I didn’t want to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life,” he says. “I was planning to walk again and that was pretty much it.” During a gruelling year of rehab, Mr Donald walked first on crutches. He then took what was at first a “very small step” unassisted. He recalls the intense pain as blood rushed down into his leg the first time he eased it off the side of his hospital bed. His scarred lower left leg, swollen by lymphedema, is a visible though painless reminder of the journey. Just two years ago, Mr Don-

Colin Donald is seeking the ultimate of challenges. 157312 ald had an idle life and reckons he wouldn’t have been able to run three kilometres let alone a marathon. Then he took another giant step. He booked himself into an intense regime at commando camps, boxing, kick-boxing and weights up to three sessions a day at Personal Performance Training Centre in Berwick. Mr Donald credits the gym’s brother coaches Lochlan and Marcus Burke at the aptly-named Intrepid Street gym for urging him on in his pursuit, dropping 39 kilos and now being the image of health. They are pushing each other in the midst of a healthy diet blitz termed the 12-week Challenge at the moment. In his training, Mr Donald is running plenty of steep kilometres

in the Dandenongs - including a 15-kilometre trek from Belgrave to Cockatoo and the Thousand Steps. He with another five Personal Performance regulars have just competed in a Spartan half-marathon, which is a 21-kilometere run combined with a commando obstacle course. An avid adventure-book reader, Mr Donald is also inspired by the travails of Australian explorers Cas and Jonesy, who have kayaked unsupported to New Zealand and Antarctica. He yearns to summit Everest and the 6000-plus kilometre Himalayan peak Ama Dablam. In neat symmetry, next year’s marathon will begin nearly 15 years to the day after Mr Donald’s crash.

During their undulating 42km run, they finish at Namche Bazaar about two kilometres below. The rocky route features many climbs, including a 523-metre rise. “I’m expecting it’s going to be hard. The last thing I want is to twist my ankle on the rocks in the first 500 metres.” In the lead-up, Mr Donald hopes to raise $50,000 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation. A Riding for the Disabled group in Doveton is calling for a hay bale-out due to a poor recent growing season. Hay prices have risen unaffordably for the 30-strong volunteer group that coaches and assists riders of all ages at Mynua Farm. As well as feed for its 11 horses, the group also requires more accredited or trainable coaches to help its riders. Its Wednesday riding session has been dropped and its rider waiting list has grown as a consequence. Coach Rick Beeby of Hampton Park has been helping the

national association for 15 years. He said he is “always happy on a horse” and started volunteering after a back injury caused him to give up his trucking job. “I was told by doctors that I’d have to change my vocation and I’d never ride again, or I’ll be in a wheelchair. “I told them OK for the first point, but you’re wrong on the second one.” He said the aim of the school was to help riders take the reins independently, if possible. It caters for riders of high needs, one that Mr Beeby remembers was 90 years old. “She’d owned horses all her life and was getting to the end of

it. This was her last wish.” The activity has layers of therapeutic benefit. Physically, the riders build up core strength, balance, co-ordination and motor skills, and emotionally bet the benefits of the joy of horse riding. “You concentrate on the abilities of the riders, not the disabilities. “It’s a really good working atmosphere. We have good people to get along with.” The group, which receives no government support, relies on fundraising and donations. Warriors turn the tables By RUSSELL BENNETT PAKENHAM Warriors have recorded one of their best wins of the Big V basketball Division 2 men’s season to date, toppling the hometown Breakers 89-76 in Mornington on Sunday afternoon. The result marked an impressive turnaround for Jeff Reid’s side, which had its colours lowered to the North East Bushrangers in Albury the week before. The Breakers led the Warriors 22-19 at the end of the first quarter on Sunday but the visitors turned the tables in the second to tie the scores at 47 apiece heading into the break. The Warriors struggled from the field in the early going, but bounced back to shoot a super-efficient 58 per cent in the second while turning the ball over just twice for the period. The Breakers responded in the third and led by the slimmest of margins with a quarter to play, but the Warriors responded - closing out the contest 25-11. Pakenham’s control and discipline was a standout all game, committing just 12 turnovers for the con-

test in contrast to the Breakers’ 23. Almost predictably, Mornington star Adam Ballinger finished with a big 22-point, 15-rebound doubledouble on 53 per cent shooting but, by and large, his team mates were well held. For Pakenham - which was without skipper Paul Phillips - Hayden Davey finished with 22 points and eight boards on 45 per cent shooting while Ben Gaze finished with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double despite struggling from the field. The defensive pressure applied by Mike Godfrey and Trent Lee was a standout throughout the contest. Simo Pajdic’s Youth League 2 men, meanwhile, enter this season’s finals series full of confidence after an imposing performance against Melton at Cardinia Life - storming to a 27-point win, 91-64. The Warriors raced out of the blocks with a 27-16 win and never looked back, restricting the Thoroughbreds to just 30 per cent from the field while forcing them into 22 turnovers. Tobie Dean finished with 20 points and five boards for the Warriors, while guard Lee Belton added

18 and eight, including three long bombs from three-point land. Lewis Newman also hit the glass with real purpose, finishing with eight points and 10 boards. Pakenham finished with an impressive 13-7 record in its debut regular season - good enough for second on the ladder behind Mornington. In the other local game for the round, Blackburn proved far too good for Pakenham’s Big V women - charging to an 86-24 win on Saturday night. In a clash that pitted top versus bottom, the visitors kept the Warriors to single-figure scoring in every quarter. PAKENHAM coach Steve O’Bryan is leaving his options open after announcing he will stand down as the Lions’ leader at the end of the season. O’Bryan met with club officials on Thursday night, and then informed his players after training of his decision to end his tenure after four years at the helm. O’Bryan confirmed the decision to himself while away on a recent 10-day trip to Chicago. “Being away it gave me time to think and it’s probably the best decision for both parties moving forward,” O’Bryan said. “I love the club, it was a really tough thing to do, but the message needs to be different if the club is to go forward with this group of players. It’s really disappointing to leave because I came to Pakenham trying to win a premiership, we haven’t done that, and it hurts to walk away being a very proud man. It’s frustrating, but what can you do, what’s done is done I guess.” The Lions’ leader joins Beaconsfield’s Clint Evans and Officer’s Brad Jones on a growing list of coaches to have already announced they will finish up at the end of 2016. Thriller of thrillers By DAVID NAGEL THRILLING results were the order of the day in the South East Football Netball League with no more than a straight kick separating all four games in round 14. But one - well it stood head and shoulders above the rest. No doubt the match of the day, and possibly the season, took place at Kalora Park, where Narre Warren rose to the top of the ladder with a stirring six-point victory over reigning champions Berwick. A huge crowd greeted both sides, the Magpies Past Players Day ensuring a cracking atmosphere for a classic game of football. Neither side could escape the other's clutches, with hard tackling and a ferocious attack on the ball, keeping scores close for the full four quarters. Scores were level at three-quarter time when Narre coach Heath Black gave a rousing address to his players. “You are not going to let these people down, we spoke about the history of this great club before the match,” Black said to his players measuredly, pointing to the past players, before raising his tone. “You have the opportunity right now to etch your names into the history books of this great club.” The Magpies certainly did that, with midfielders Josh Tonna, Trent Cody and Dean Kelly producing impressive last quarters to see their side home in a thriller. “It’s a great feeling, we tapped into the Past Players Day because it’s really important to recognise a footy club’s traditions, cultures, beliefs and values,” Black said after the match. Cody and Jake Richardson kicked a goal each in the final term and both finished with two, while Luke Nelson, Kurt Batt and Mitch Johnson slotted a couple each for the Wickers. Four vie for finals berth - what a ripper! By DAVID NAGEL NARRE Warren and Beaconsfield are safe, but the battle between Doveton, Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Tooradin for a finals berth in the South East Football Netball League looks set for a thrilling conclusion. Hampton Park showed it is not far off the pace of the top two, pushing Beaconsfield to the limit in a high-quality, 43-38, contest at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Beacy got the jump on the Redbacks, leading 15-9 at quarter time and maintained a similar advantage through to the final whistle. Rania Waller (goal defence) and Maddi Hanlen (wing defence) giving the Eagles their best shot, but

they just fell short in the end as the Eagles showed all the qualities of a top team. Danni Cameron (goal keeper) and Gabby Stinear (GD) dug their heels in at the defensive end of the court, while Mel Davies (wing attack) and Amanda McKenna (centre) were terrific in the clinches. Tooradin bounced back from last week’s thrashing at the hands of Doveton with a 46-35 victory over Pakenham at Westernport Oval. The Gulls did most of their damage in the first half, leading by nine at quarter time and 12 as they turned for home. Tara Smith (C), Holly Gillespie (WD) and Jess Whitford (GD) were at the top of their games for the Gulls while Olivia Hunt

(GD), Meaghan Musgrave (C) and Bec Cox (WD) tried exceptionally hard for the Lions. Doveton was forced to work hard against a persistent ROC, eventually claiming a 55-43 victory at Starling Road. The Doves just couldn’t break free in the first half, but built their six-goal lead nicely in the third term. A 16-8 third quarter put the issue beyond doubt to give the Doves consecutive wins for just the second time this year. The familiar faces of Aila Pera (GD) and Liz Edwards (GK) got busy in the third term to shake off the Kangaroos, while Rahni Samason (goal shooter) was once again dominant under the ring.

Tess Young (GK), Jaz Cross (GK/C) and Gemma Stacey (WA) gave everything they had for ROC. And finally, Narre Warren kept its unbeaten run intact with a dominant 60-26 victory over Berwick at Kalora Park. Leigh Taylor (C/WA), Bec Potalej (WD/C), and Demi Brettoner (WA) were driving forces for the Magpies who strode out to a 15-goal lead at the first break. But full credit to Berwick, they were outclassed but fought the game out strongly. The Wickers will gain some confidence from a tight last quarter, where Charlotte Tiplady (WD), Emily LaRoche (C) and Emma Clarke (GS) put their best foot forward. Cranbourne had the bye.

Package packs a punch By EWAN KENNEDY in Zurich, Switzerland THE Audi Q2 is a small-medium SUV which is set to arrive in Q1 in Australia. Its body is stylish, but retains a fair amount of practicality. Customisation is very much part of the Q2’s package which means it’s theoretically possible for 5 million variations of the vehicle to leave the factory. Sales of small and mid-size SUVs are booming worldwide, not just in Australia. Many are being bought by people with no desire to go off-road but who want something that’s easy to get in and out of. Station wagons are considered boring whereas SUVs are desirable. The Q2 is offered with several different petrol and diesel engines, all of them turbocharged. The smallest unit is a 1.0-litre threecylinder which we have driven and liked but Audi feels Australian buyers wouldn’t be keen on it so it’s not coming down under. The smallest Australian engine will be the 1.4-litre cylinder-on-demand one which is already seen on several other Audi models here and produces 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. The largest turbo-petrol, with a dis-

Finally there’s a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (110 kW / 340 Nm). Audi’s 1.4 engine drives only through the front wheels, the 2.0-litre units are connected to all four wheels through the company’s quattro AWD system. All Australia imports will have a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic (S tronic in Audi speak). The auto on the 2.0 quattro models

is a new design with faster shifts and smoother take-up during ultra-slow parking manoeuvres whereas the 1.4 makes do with the older version of the S tronic, at least for the time being. Our initial road testing was carried out in Switzerland during a global media event organised by Audi during which we were able to sample each of the engines being imported to Australia. There is good space in the front seats, they’re easy to enter and leave and the driving position is pleasing

high, without going to the extremes of a genuine 4WD. The rear seats are marginal in legroom for adults and some compromises will have to be made with those in the front if tall travellers are on board. Three grown-ups can sit across the back, but two makes more sense. Audi Q2 isn’t alone in this as most in the small and small-medium segments have the same problems. Boot space at 405 litres is good and the floor can be set at two levels to either provide security for smallish objects under it, or for tall cargo. Maximum capacity is 1050 litres with the rear seats down. Good aerodynamics aren’t easy to achieve in SUV bodies but Audi has managed an impressively low coefficient of drag of just 0.30. This results in low wind noise and we happily cruised at 130 km/h on European motorways with barely a rustle of wind from the door mirrors. After leaving the motorways and getting ourselves onto brilliant mountainous Swiss roads, complete with snow covered peaks above us, we found Audi Q2 quiet and comfortable to travel in. There were some relatively rough surfaces but these didn’t challenge the suspension. As usual, we will need to wait until we can carry out road tests in Australia

before coming to conclusions. Handling is competent enough with high levels of road grip, all the more so in the Q2 sports with its larger wheels, wider tyres and adaptable dampers. However this is obviously a small SUV not a sedan due to its higher centre of gravity. Feel through the steering is on the dead side. No attempt was made to take the Audi Q2 off-road. Ground clearance of 148 mm isn’t a lot higher than that of many hatches and sedans. However, it has very short overhangs so the models with quarto allwheel-drive may be able to tackle dirt road and fire trails if adventurous families want to get to interesting areas in the Australian bush.
