By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA local Elena Duggan has taken out the top title in the 2016 Masterchef competition, beating Noosa chef Matt Sinclair by just two points in a nail-biting finale.

The true spirit of the show shone through when Ms Duggan left her own cook to help Mr Sinclair in the final moments, but Mr Sinclair was “gutted” when his egg began to split in the last few second of the competition.

Despite an early three-point lead, Mr Sinclair wasn’t able to make the points to see the season out as the winner.

Ms Duggan, who grew up in

Tewantin, won the $250,000 prize by just two points and said she was “so grateful for the entire experience”, thanking Mr Sinclair for his friendship throughout the competition.

“I’ve learnt a lot about food from Matt,” she said.

On congratulating his fellowcompetitor, Mr Sinclair said she had earned the win and thanked her for helping him make it through the competition.

Noosa local Mr Sinclair walked

away with a surprise $40,000 prize as runner-up and has told local media he will put the money towards his food truck business, Ten Piece Cutlery.

Masterchef judges said they couldn’t wait to line up for Mr Sinclair’s street food cuisine, and Noosa locals might not have to wait for long with Mr Sinclair in talks to host a pop-up restaurant at Ricky’s River Bar, where he has been working for the past two months.

King of the Mountain The 38th annual King of the Mountain race was run on Sunday 24 July in Pomona, as over 90 runners ran up and then down Mount Cooroora. It’s no mean feat and while there were some impressive times made, local motherof-two, Hayley Townsend, 28, came through a hero finishing the gruelling race with her two sons by her side.

Hayley may have been the last runner to cross the line but she won the Anne Daly Trophy for the most gallant effort after charging to the finish line with her sons, who ran onto the course to join their mum. More on pages 6-7.

No bus route for mums PREGNANT women will have to travel two and a half hours to the new University hospital after TransLink failed to include a new route to the hospital for Noosa residents.

Councillor Ingrid Jackson has slammed the decision, saying TransLink has failed to consider Noosa’s needs and is leaving mothers-to-be vulnerable.

With the current bus routes, new mothers and pregnant women will have to travel to the new University hospital by catching a bus from Noosa to Maroochydore and

then changing to a direct service to the hospital.

Cr Jackson said the lack of a new route between Noosa and the new hospital would particularly affect mothers-to- be and people who need treatment for acute medical conditions.

“The present maternity ward and birthing suite at Nambour Hospital together with many facilities for people with acute conditions will be transferred to the new hospital next year, but no appropriate bus route has been established to cope with

the change,” she said.

Cr Jackson said ease of transport should be a major consideration in planning for access to a hospital, and was calling on the State Government to address the issue.

A TransLink spokesperson said Noosa residents had been considered in the planning of the new network.

“Customers from Noosa using their existing Maroochydore services will be able to change buses easily at Maroochydore station on the same platform and connect to

our new proposed service 611, which would take them directly to the hospital,” the spokesperson said.

The TransLink spokesperson said information sessions about the new network would be held in Caloundra, Kawana, Buderim, Sippy Downs and Maroochydore, but not Noosa.

Noosa residents can have their say via TransLink’s online portal that is open for public comment until 14 August. Anyone who would like to make a submission can visit www.translink.com.au.

Mumpreneur’s winning ways shine

Aimee is founder of The Powerhouse co-operative, which is a shared office space enabling parents to either grow their work from home business or establish their own work from home or small business.

Her plan is to set up a notfor-profit co-operative structure for parents to work while their children are nearby.

The innovative idea to create a collaborative workspace inclusive of training programs, short courses and mentoring has jagged Ms Sherriff a place in the finals for The Big Idea and Making a Difference categories.

Councillor Ingrid Jackson has slammed Translink for ignoring the needs of Noosa.

Council to court NOOSA Council is headed to court to defend its decision to refuse a development application for a service station that would be located next to a local school.

At Thursday’s (21 July) council meeting, councillors voted to defend the appeal that was lodged in the Planning and Environment court on 26 May by the applicants, Synergy Property Partners, who want to build a service station and shop on vacant land next to Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

Upon refusing the Material Change of Use application in April, council cited an “unacceptable risk to human health, safety and well-being, in particular to children using the adjacent school facilities”, insufficient buffers between the development and the school, and an inability to contain emissions within the site as the reasons for refusal.

In the submission to the court, lawyers for Synergy Property Partners said the allegation the development would pose an “unacceptable risk” to health was “contrary to the scientific evidence available to the assessment manager”.

Lawyers also said the development application included a proposal to build a “vapour protection fence”, claims the application is in conflict with the Noosa Plan are “erroneous”, and there is no requirement in the Noosa Plan that a service station must contain emissions.

Eagle Boys Cooroy and Tewantin wanted to thank the local community for their ongoing support, with stores across Australia reporting record sales in deliveries and pick-up orders over the past week.

Eagle Boys Tewantin franchisee Kathryn Authurs said this was a positive sign and their team was delighted with the local support.

Top ‘lyrical tenor voice’ honoured” to win in what was his second shot at the title.

“It’s the only opera prize like it in Queensland and the recognition from the name of the award, Dame Joan Sutherland, will open doors for me, particularly overseas,” Henderson said.

The Brisbane International Airport part-time sales assistant’s opera career is ready to take off as he plans to enrol in a young artist program with a major company.

“It’s taken a big load off my shoulders financially, giving me the freedom to pursue my goals and aspirations,” Henderson said.

Soprano Tabatha McFadyen of Wentworth Falls, New South Wales, came a very close second, winning the Margreta Elkins Award of $4000.

The patron of the award was one of the original judges of the competition until her death in 2009.

McFadyen said she was privileged to win the Margreta Elkins award, which was named after the famous mezzo soprano from Brisbane.

“Everyone revered and admired Margreta who sang with Maria Callas and Dame Joan Sutherland and was an example and patron to young singers,” she said.

“I feel honoured to have won her award.”

Rachael has wheel appeal

The resort kindly donated their room and services on Thursday which was put together by Ella Gerahty of Noosa DJ’s with the help of local celebrant Kath Tilly.

“We had many wonderful businesses and individuals contribute, and it shows what a wonderful community we belong to,” said Ms Gerahty.

Many people from the wedding industry attended, donating prizes and funds totalling $2700, which takes Rachael one step closer to the $40,000 she needs for a car.

BRISBANE tenor Iain Henderson’s top note and overall performance convinced judges he was worthy of the $15,000 Dame Joan Sutherland Award (DJSA) in Noosa this weekend.

Competing against five accomplished amateur opera divas on Friday 22 July, Henderson also won the audience vote for the People’s Choice Award and $750 in the bi-annual DJSA vocal competition hosted by Noosa Federation of the Arts (NFA).

The competition is regional Australia’s richest and most prestigious opera award which was founded to help further the careers of Australian opera singers aged 20-34 in all categories from soprano to bass.

Judge and NFA artistic director Brad Jarrett said Henderson possessed a beautiful lyrical tenor voice which allowed him to sing most of the romantic tenor roles in the opera repertoire.

“Iain easily reached and held the top C in Che gelida manina, which is the climax of the aria and always excites the audience if sung well,” he said.

“His rendition of the serenade from The Student Prince really struck a chord with the audience, and I think took them back to the days of Mario Lanza.”

Helping koalas bear bush life AFTER weeks of community feedback, Noosa Council has endorsed a 27-point action plan to better protect local koalas.

Mayor Tony Wellington thanked residents and wildlife groups for helping develop the Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan, which council is now rolling out.

Council is assisting with a koala health mapping project being run by scientists from the University of the Sunshine Coast. This important work is being funded in part by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation.

“This research will help us better understand the overall health of Noosa’s koala populations. We’re also talking with scientific experts from the Richard Branson Conservancy about using GPS tracking devices to monitor local koala movements. If we’re serious about helping the survival of our local koalas, then we need to understand much more about their health, whereabouts and threats,” Cr Wellington said.

“Council has included stronger tree protections in recent planning scheme amendments. We will also be looking at the effectiveness of our koala infrastructure such as

Residents, wildlife groups and other stakeholders answered council’s call for feedback on a draft conservation plan last year.

Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne said council revised the plan to include that feedback.

“There were a lot of calls for greater wild dog control.

We’ve included that in the action plan as wild dogs are one of the biggest threats koalas face,” he said.

Council received a wide range of suggestions during the public consultation process, from relocating koalas to preventing development in known koala areas.

Cr Wellington said coun-

cil had to work within State Government legislation and guidelines, particularly with regards to development issues or translocating native animals.

“Thankfully the state is increasingly aware of the need to protect the future viability of this iconic species,” Cr Wellington said.

“We will be calling on the state to include Noosa when allocating the $12 million it recently announced for koala conservation efforts.

“I thank the community and local koala activists. Their input has been critical to developing this conservation plan. We all have to work together to ensure koalas remain an essential component of Noosa’s biodiversity.”

THE Tewantin Commonwealth Bank branch staff stayed in their PJs on Friday 22 July to show support for The Pyjama Foundation’s work with children in foster care.

Branch staff said they loved staying comfy all day in their PJs and selling cupcakes to raise money for the Pyjama Foundation. Pyjama Foundation pens are also available for sale in the branch and will remain on sale until the end of July.

Pyjama Day brings muchneeded attention to the important work of the Pyjama Foundation, which offers a one-on-one mentoring program to children in foster care who desperately need assistance with reading, writing and building confidence.

In Australia, there are more

than 46,000 children currently living in foster care, 75 per cent of who are unlikely to finish school.

The Pyjama Foundation’s literacy and numeracy programs are designed to try and reverse this trend.

Branch manager Lauren Browne said it might feel strange staying in her PJs all day, but it’s worth it to help raise funds and awareness for the Pyjama Foundation.

“We are delighted to support this amazing foundation and the work they do with kids in foster care and we hope the local community get behind this great cause by coming into the branch and making a donation,” she said.

The Pyjama Foundation founder and executive director Bronwyn Sheehan said by offering mentors to children,

who visit them once a week to help them with their homework, literacy and numeracy, the foundation is helping them get a step closer to achieving their dreams.

“I am surrounded by fantastic volunteers, who are so committed to the child they visit,” she said.

“A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.

For many foster kids, their Pyjama Foundation mentor is that person.

“We’d like to thank the Tewantin Commonwealth Bank branch staff for supporting Pyjama Day and helping us to raise much needed funds so we can continue to support kids in care.”

Children joined their parents as they made the final dash for the finish line.

It was a tense start at the race line for Pomona school teacher Leslie Saunders.

The 2016 King of the Mountain, Mark Bourne.

It was a strong finish for 14-year-old Reagan Wilson who came runner-up in the junior boys division.

After a gruelling climb, finishing was sweet relief.

Feeding off the crowd's energy helped the runners conquer the last leg of the race.

By JOLENE OGLE MORE than 90 runners pounded the pavement and conquered the mountain in Pomona on Sunday for the 38th annual King of the Mountain race.

This year saw a new King crowned as 32-year-old ACT ecologist Mark Bourne crossed the line in an impressive 23 minutes and 53 seconds, followed very closely by New Zealand runner

Shay Williamson with a time of 24:40.

Pomona school teacher Leslie Saunders, 45, ran an impressive time of 31:19 to be the first female to finish the gruelling 4.2km race.

Ms Saunders said it felt fantastic to hold onto her crown for the second year in a row, and said she was inspired by the children who ran in the Prince and Princess of the Mountain race the day before.

Event organisers, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, couldn’t have asked for better weather as thousands of locals and visitors laid out picnic rugs and reclined in camping chairs to cheer on the runners.

Kin of the Mountain chairperson Heather Manders said it had been a great turn out for the annual event, and since the running of the race she had received wonderful feedback about this year’s festival.

Mal’s no cruiser MALCOLM Turnbull was never cruising in the polls, Dom Massoni (NT, 21 July). Yes, there was a bounce in the polls but that bounce became a ripple in a pond within the second week, dead flat in the third and a vortex going down the gurgler by the fourth week.

Malcolm Turnbull’s mistake was his absolute hatred of Tony Abbott, ego, lust for power and greed. This hatred, ego, lust, greed and lack of faith in a man who had won two elections and may or may not have won a third cost the Liberals 13 seats in the lower house and the loss of nine senate seats (to date).

The truth be known, Turnbull’s betrayal of Tony Abbott saw around 1.9 million Liberal Party voters abandon the party, vowing to never vote Liberal while the usurper Malcolm Turnbull is Prime Minister. Comments from the Liberal Party hierarchy (Mark Textor) “they don’t matter" further inflamed the Liberal base. As a result 1.9 million “they don’t matters" kept their promise and voted for the minor parties, Hanson, Christian Democrats, Family First and other conservative parties.

To suggest a stronger campaign on border security and immigration by Turnbull would have seen a better result is incorrect they would not have made an iota’s difference to the election result. The cause of this devastating result is Malcolm Turnbull. Any recriminations lie squarely on his shoulders, (mea culpa).

BEING someone with an interest in commercial fishing, please afford me this reply to Bruce Hallett’s letter (21 July). Over the 100 years he refers to, Noosa commercial fishing in the name of sustainability of the resource have allocated permanently closed areas. These areas are all waters north of the Sir Thomas Hiley information centre and waters east and south of the mouth of Lake Weyba from the f/b sign at the Noosaville boat ramp.

Secondly, we have a weekend time closure from 1800 Friday to 1800 Sunday (a 48-hour closure). This closure is now pretty much nationally accepted. Modern day commercial fishing is all about sustainability in management plans dictating total allowable catches, fishing allocations, net sizes, compulsory bycatch and turtle reduction devices, sizes by length and gender.

This is some of my commercial fishing’s contribution in the name of sustainability. By comparison, Mr Hallett’s recreational sector has given nothing (apart from size and bag limits) within our Noosa River and lakes system.

May I suggest to Mr Hallett to cease his headbutting and work on some no-take areas for his rec sector in the name of sustainability of our public resource.

BORN in 1938 and my father often joked I was the reason for World War II, I have only watched films from the 1930s and early 1940s of men and women behaving hysterically while listening to one man whip them into a frenzy under his influence.

Later on I have watched teenagers and adults reacting the same way to their pop idols.

Watching the Republican Convention from America and with the Democrats next week promising the same viewing I can only be thankful I was born in England and have lived in Australia for the last 48 years and that for you to witness that type of admiration for one person you have to be a sports fan barracking for your team.

I hope our politicians never resort to that type of political fervour for securing votes and followers.

I WONDER whether any of your readers have suffered from insomnia since settling in Noosa? Mrs Mudal and I never had any difficulty sleeping, but since moving to Noosa this has changed dramatically. I have been racking my brain for the reason and think I may have the answer.

My theory is that the Noosa roundabouts could be the cause of our insomnia. Mrs Mudal tends to spend some time on roundabouts and often circles them four or five times before finding the correct exit. Continuously driving round in circles must surely upset one’s equilibrium and sleep patterns.

It was recently suggested to my wife that when retiring she should lie on the edge of the bed. She was assured that she would drop off in no time. She tried this and fell off the bed, dislocating her shoulder. Fortunately she soon returned to normal, but we are both still sleeping badly.

Early one morning last week, unbeknown to me, Mrs Mudal attempted to restore her equilibrium by circling a Noosa roundabout anticlockwise. She managed to get round it twice without mishap but on the third circle a large truck approached her. He only avoided a headon collision by swerving across the roundabout and tearing up a good deal of the lawn and garden in the process. Mrs Mudal returned home in a highly strung condition and won’t be attempting that manoeuvre again.

If as I suspect a number of local residents are suffering from insomnia since moving to Noosa then perhaps we should get together.

We could probably mount a case to have all the roundabouts replaced by traffic lights. I look forward to your readers’ responses.

HINTERLANDHAPPENINGS

Put through their paces EACH weekday at 7am a group of active Pomona residents meet outside the Pomona Community House to pound the pavement as part of the Pomona Pacers walking group.

Started six years ago, the group walks for up to 60 minutes each day from Monday to Friday on a range of local walks.

There are currently 24 members in the group, who all enjoy a brisk walk while meeting new friends.

Long-time walkers Helen Randall and Denise Ruttley recently shared their stories as members of the Pomona Pacers.

Helen said she joined the Pomona Pacers Heart Foundation walking group in May last year and enjoys exploring the beautiful forest walking tracks.

“I joined the Pomona Pacers after my daughter (a marathon runner) kept nagging me to join the walking group.

I had been walking solo with my dog along the forest trails near my home and as it was rather lonely I thought my daughter had a good idea and as it turned out it was the best idea ever,” she said.

Helen said she is lucky to have good heart health and fitness at the age of 66 but a recent diagnosis of dementia turned her life around.

“Yes, it was a shock but believe me the lovely caring people in our walking group have made this adjustment so much easier,” she said.

“I was advised by the physician to keep walking and stay fit – and to keep up my social contacts. Well how lucky I am to have my Pomona Pacers buddies to walk with.

“The exercise is important but the friendship, chatter and laughter is what keeps me going. We walk and talk but it’s more than walking. We share coffee on Wednesdays when the group gets even bigger

with partners and friends popping in. We also have lots of other outings – moon walks, longer walks to lookouts and up hills (ouch, hamstrings) and many other celebration brunches and lunches for birthdays or whatever.”

Helen said she stays positive to slow down the onset of dementia but having the support of the walking group has been “fabulous”.

“I recommend that you get involved and find one near you, even if you think your heart’s in good shape you just don’t know what else is around the corner,” she said.

Fellow Pomona Pacer Denise has been walking with the group for several years after her neighbour encouraged her to give it a go.

Walk organiser Karen Gosling, who has been walking for four years, said in keeping with the spirit of the Pomona Pacers group, Denise keeps an eye on those who may be feeling down or

unwell, and kindly shares her and husband John’s produce with the group.

“One of Denise’s many talents is scrapbooking and we are very touched that Denise has produced a beautiful album dedicated to a year in the life of the Pomona Pacers,” she said.

“Denise has been collecting group photos and a few candid shots on our walks and outings for some months now as she builds a library of happy memories of our walking group.

“With great care and affection Denise has spent hours putting together this book of moments and memories of the Pomona Pacers.

“So, you might think of the Pomona Pacers as the local Heart Foundation walking group but really it is a walking group with a heart.”

Lapping up pool

90 years young still

By HOLLIE HARRIS JUNE Chant celebrated her 90th birthday, on Saturday 23 July at Cooroy RSL, with friends and family travelling from as far north as Townsville, west as Toowoomba and south of Melbourne to share her special day.

Born in 1926 in Rosewood, Queensland, she grew up in Grantchester. At age 15 June attended a dance where she saw a photo of a soldier, a Rat of Tobruk, on the wall.

She said I’m going to meet that man and marry him and in 1945, she did meet that man, Mr Ted (Edward) Chant and one month later they were engaged.

In 1987 June and her husband Ted moved to Cooroy, in search of a home in the sun, where June has lived ever since.

When asked what she likes most about Cooroy, June’s eyes light up and she answers: “Everything. It’s such a friendly town. I’ve never spoken to someone here I didn’t like. Such nice people”.

June is a mother of six – Don, Kerry, Greg, Ken, Denise and Glenda – and is affectionately known as ‘Nannie’ to her 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

THE Pomona School pool had a welcome makeover during the winter break and is ready to re-open in August.

The pool now has warm 28-degree water with a modern filtration system, a repainted pool surface, automatic pool vacuum and a new pace clock for squads, and passes will be part of the re-opening.

Pool lessee, coach and dual Olympian and medallist Greg Rogers said the school principal Alyson Covey had been pro-active and supportive of the makeover.

“Alyson and staff have been visionary for the school and the community and are to be commended for the project,” he said.

THE music of Africa came to St Andrew’s Anglican College last week when a group of visiting musicians performed as part of World Music Week.

Students clapped and danced to the wonderful sounds of the balaphon, a type of wooden xylophone or percussion idiophone which plays melodic tunes, and which dates back to the 14th century.

Enjoying the beautiful rhythmic sounds with a dance and music concert, the entire school of 1300 students and staff took part in an interactive clapping round which just sounded fantastic. Students then had the opportunity to join the group on stage to drum and learn some African dance moves.

Director of co-curricular music Andrew Eunson said the cultural experience was a real treat for the students, staff and parents.

“Music is the universal language that links us all together and it was fantastic to see our youngest children from Little Saints and our eldest students in Year 12 immersed together in a musical experience such as this,” he said.

By HOLLIE HARRIS WITH the Rio Olympics only a month away, many Australians are preparing to travel to Brazil and with a colourful experience ahead travelling to the region may also present some health concerns.

In the spotlight is the spread of Zika virus and the implications for any woman (or their partner) that is currently pregnant or planning to fall pregnant in the near future.

Local GP at Doctors of Tewantin (DOT) Dr Catriona Caddell has recently completed further studies in travel medicine and received the internationallyrecognised qualification from the ISTM (International Society of Travel Medicine).

For anyone planning an overseas trip, Dr Caddell would be delighted to see them to discuss the ways in which travellers can maintain their health, well-being and (of course) enjoyment while they are away.

DOT Travel Clinic also offers post-travel care for anyone who has been overseas and become ill on their return to Australia. It’s important to note that there are many diseases which may cause symptoms weeks or even months after being away, and so it’s essential to mention that for people who have been overseas if they do become unwell within 12 months or so of returning home.

Whether it’s just a few days in Fiji or six months travelling in Africa, Dr Caddell said it was important to become as informed as possible prior to departure and to consider an appointment with a travel doctor to discuss the relevant medical issues.

Seeking some medical advice far in advance of departure allows time to discuss and administer any relevant vaccines which could potentially take several weeks to complete or to trial an anti-malarial medication to assess any side-effects.

Dr Caddell said that many illnesses, such as Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis B and influenza can be avoided if a traveller has been previously vaccinated, including very young children.

There are also many non-vaccine preventable diseases which exist around the world that may be preventable if you talk to a GP before leaving.

Dr Caddell said that hanging out bare-foot at the beach, swimming or kayaking in freshwater lakes and rivers, exploring in caves, camping or biking in rural countryside can sometimes come with a consequence, and recommends pre-planning to safe guard health.

All these nasties can be avoided by getting some specific advice regarding how to reduce the risk of exposure may be worth those 20 extra minutes at a Travel Clinic before flying out.

Myth 1 – Clouds mean protection from UV rays.

Busted. Just because it’s a cloudy day doesn’t mean the sun’s rays can’t penetrate. You can still get sunburnt through cloud cover and it may be more intense due to reflection off the bottom of the clouds.

Myth 2 – Make-up with SPF is enough protection.

Busted. Generally makeups provide very little protection with SPF of 15 or less and need to be reapplied throughout the day to be effective.

Don’t forget the rest of your body either. Try to choose a sunscreen which doubles as a moisturiser and includes an SPF of 30 or higher.

Myth 3 – People with darker skin types don’t get skin cancer.

Busted. People of all

skin colours get skin cancer.

Darker skinned people do have a lower risk of skin cancer when compared to fairer skinned people but unfortunately diagnosis is generally at a later stage.

Myth 4 – Solariums are a safer way to tan.

Busted. By now most of us know solariums increase your risk of melanoma and should be avoided at all costs. There is never a safe way to tan, nor can a tan offer any protection from the sun.

Myth 5 – Wearing sunscreen will affect levels of vitamin D. Busted. Vitamin D is important for overall health but for the majority of skins, walking to the car, or simply hanging the washing on the line can achieve the required exposure needed to synthesise vitamin D. Riverside Beauty recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, screening the damaging effects of both UVA and UVB rays.

1. Tell us something most people don’t know about you?

I am an avid golfer, playing off a handicap of eight at the present time. I try to get out on the course every week either at Noosa Golf Club or Mount Coolum Golf Club. I also play rugby union for the Noosa Dolphins. I absolutely love being a part of the club and the mateship associated with being part of a team. Although I feel as though I may be getting a bit old for the rough and tumble now, it’s always hard getting out of bed on a Sunday morning after the games.

2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date?

A hard question to answer but, probably graduating university (BSocSc, Hon Buss Law), playing in a Noosa Dolphins junior team that went undefeated for nearly four years, and scoring my first hole-in-one at Tewantin Noosa Golf Club on the 12th hole.

3. What do you like most about living/ working in Noosa?

Noosa is the most beautiful place ever from walking on the beach or in the Noosa National Park every morning, to amazing cafes, bars and restaurants, no matter where I go in the world I always want to come back here. All of the above makes working here very easy indeed.

4. Where do you think Noosa property prices will go over the next few years?

I think we all want the prices to keep rising. Over the past two years we have seen phenomenal growth with some market places in the area reaching preGFC price points. The top-end waterfront and beachfront property prices that took the biggest hit in the downturn have been clawing their way back slowly but surely with some great results being achieved of late. The lack of available land in the area has been a key contributor to pushing our prices back up.

5. Where is your favourite part of Noosa and why?

Far too many to choose really, put me anywhere near the water and I’m happy.

Every sale is memorable that’s why I love selling, but any sale where the owners work with me to create a selling strategy that best suits their property and current needs at the time and we achieve above market results this makes me happy every time because it means I am doing my job effectively.

8. You are hosting a dinner party and can invite six guests, dead or alive. Who would they be?

Ernest Hemingway, John Wayne, Jim Morrison, My Grandad Jack Weller, Joaquin Phoenix and Hank Moody from Californication. We would have a good old fashioned blokes evening eating steaks, drinking plenty of good red wine and scotch. I couldn’t imagine anything better.

Tight rental market shows stresses THE REIQ March quarter 2016 Vacancy Rate Report has revealed the rental market in the south-east corner is operating in very healthy to tight conditions, with pressure building in some key areas for more investors and more rental accommodation to meet demand.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the data showed specific markets in south-east Queensland were crying out for greater investment and more housing construction.

“Gold Coast vacancy rates have been operating at less than 2.5 per cent for more than two years and this is clear evidence that there is continuing strong rental demand,” she said.

“The Sunshine Coast has had tight conditions for more than four years and rental accommodation can be very challenging to find - this area could support new dwelling construction.”

Finding a rental in Noosa or on the Sunshine Coast is likely to get harder as the market tightens.

QUALIFIED BUYERS WAITING

“We are clearly not oversupplied - at this stage.”

Outside the south-east corner, vacancy rates are weak, with most regional centres continuing to experience difficulties stemming from the mining downturn.

“Gladstone has pushed out to 11.3 per cent, the highest in the state, and this is concerning,” Ms Mercorella said. “The closure of the LNG project continues to have an impact as workers leave in search of jobs elsewhere.”

Bundaberg vacancy rate eased from 3.9 per cent to 5.2 per cent.

The results in Brisbane also confirmed the REIQ’s position that the inner city is not in the grip of a glut, with the CBD recording a drop from 3.1 per cent to 3.0 per cent.

Rockhampton has eased slightly, from 6.1 per cent to 6.9 per cent.

“The inner 5km ring is at 3.3 per cent and the middle ring is at 2.5 per cent - these levels continue to fall within what the REIQ considers the healthy range,” Ms Mercorella said.

Townsville has tightened marginally, from 6.4 per cent to 6.0 per cent.

Mackay vacancy rate has tightened, from 9.3 per cent to 8.1 per cent.

Ms Mercorella said negative gearing had been critical in maintaining a supply of investors to the market.

Areas such as Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Caboolture and Caloundra are all experiencing vacancy rates of less than two per cent, which is regarded as very tight.

The negative side of policy change IN A state-wide survey of its membership and their landlord clients, an REIQ survey has found 79 per cent of property investors would abandon property as an investment strategy if Labor’s negative gearing changes were brought in.

REIQ chairman Rob Honeycombe said the findings confirmed changes to negative gearing would be disastrous for the Queensland property market.

“We now know for a fact that 79 per cent of respondents will get out of property and find an alternative investment strategy that works more effectively and yields a better return,” he said.

“That will have a crippling effect on house values and on the rental market, where the private rental market plays such a critical role in keeping rents affordable,” he said.

Greenthief are coming to Noosa to celebrate the launch of their sophomore album.

Greenthief set to steal hearts at Villa Noosa MELBOURNE’S Greenthief are excited to stop in at the Villa Noosa as their national tour comes to an end later this month.

It has been five years since Greenthief crashed the indie scenester party with a unique blend of psychedelic rock.

Spreading their word with frequent trips around Australia, the band has broken sound barriers

and state lines while enchanting audiences with a sound akin to a lovechild of Queens of the Stone Age and Pink Floyd.

The trio have received airplay on Triple J, Rage and all key community radio stations. In 2012 they landed in Rage’s top 50 videos of the year and supported The Butterfly Effect on a massive 24-date national tour across Australia.

In 2013, Greenthief undertook their debut international tour, performing 20 dates across Eastern Europe as well as shows in the UK and Germany and in 2014 they dropped their Steve James produced debut record.

Greenthief are excited to announce the release of a brand-new single titled ‘Ship To Nowhere’.

The single is the first taken from

the band’s sophomore album tilted ‘Tremors’, which was released last month.

by WILBUR SMITH THIS is a swashbuckling page-turner of a novel. I have not read any of Wilbur Smith’s books for some years, thinking that his earlier works were his best.

That may well be, however I found it hard to put this exciting story of adventure down.

The youthful Henry ‘Hal’ Courtney is a successful master of his own ship, the “Golden Bough”, in the reign of Charles II. The war between the English and the Dutch is temporally on hold through an uneasy truce, though this has not stopped the odd skirmish when an unscrupulous captain scents an opportunity for gain.

The “Golden Bough” is running down the east coast of Africa, which for centuries has been home to pirates, vagabonds and slave traders.

Aboard is the beautiful Ethiopian Judith Nazet, a warrior in her own right and Hal Courtney’s lover.

Hal’s ultimate object is to retrieve the Courtney family’s stash of treasure which has

been secreted for years up a little known lagoon near the Cape at the base of the African continent, and then return with it to his ancestral home in England.

Trouble soon strikes when the “Golden Bough” is boarded and the crew must fight hand-to-hand to defend the ship and their lives.

Worse is to come when Hal discovers his ruthless and mortal enemy, known as “The Buzzard”, still lives after having been badly burned in a fire which sent his ship to the bottom.

A series of unavoidable events lead Hal to Zanzibar which is run by Omani Arabs, no friends of his as he was previously at war with their ships in the Red Sea. It is also home to “The Buzzard”, now a grotesque figure, and who is hell bent on revenge on Hal, and on purloining the Courtney treasure.

Hal, and separately Judith, are betrayed, captured, and end up in the seedy Zanzibar slave markets, neither knowing the fate of the other.

NOOSAVILLE Smash repairs owner Mal Favager has seen many businesses come and go during the 24 years since he and his partner Wendy purchased the workshop.

Mal said two major factors had seen the business stand the test of time - quality workmanship and an emphasis on customer service.

Muscle cars set to muscle up NOOSA locals will feel the ground shake and hear the rumbling of engines as hotted up muscle cars roll into Noosa next month.

The cars are part of the Australia-wide fund-raising rally for the Leukemia Foundation and will be in town for the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club’s annual Noosa Hill Climb event.

Noosa Beach Classic Car Club member Jay Bowden said the club welcomed the muscle cars to Noosa and the annual event.

Quigley fires up in debut

By DAVID ARNOLD SENIORS: On Saturday, the Noosa Pirates were on yet another journey south to Caboolture to take on Yandina in a must-win game to keep finals aspirations alive.

With numbers low due to unforseen circumstances, young Pirates Jake Bullen and first-gamer Tyler Quigley got the chance to show the crowd the skills they have been working on in the under18s. It didn’t take long for the scoreboard to tick over when

Quigley - starting in the number 9 jersey - crossed the line after just two minutes.

Lachy Gladman duly converted and the Pirates had a six-point lead. Yandina never gave up and their hard work was rewarded with a try in the 20th minute. But it was an outstanding team performance by all concerned - let’s continue this by getting to training this week. Next week’s game is in Maroochydore to take on Nambour at 1.30pm.

U18: On Friday night, the under-18s travelled to Beer-

wah to take on the Bulldogs.

U9 Blue: The Noosa boys continued to back each other up which led to lots of offloads and exciting runs. Our defence was also great, holding out full sets on our try line.

U9 Yellow: Under-9 Yellow blazed through the heat of Saturday and took on the might of the Coolum Colts, twice. Both games were enjoyable to watch defensively, especially in the middle.

U10: Our Blue team played at Palmwoods on Friday night with some of our Yellow boys coming to help out with numbers. The team played probably one of their best games all year keeping Palmwoods scoreless. Saturday’s game saw the Yellow team take on Coolum.

Excellent effort from all the boys with some standout performances from Ziah, Lochlan Johnson, Lachlan Neville, Jed Danton and Jhemi. Our man of the match and birthday boy was Cohyn North.

U12: The under-12 Gold boys played a fantastic game, defeating Maroochydore 44-0.

The Noosa boys were strong in their defence with the Maroochydore boys finding it hard to break through Noosa’s strong defence line.

U13 Blue: Noosa Blue met Beerwah at Beerwah. A surge late in the second half gave Noosa Blue some momentum but it was too late to get back in the game. Player of the match was Jacob.

U13 Gold: The boys decided during the week they are going to win the last four games of the year and today they started in the right direction by beating Beerwah 28-12 in a very entertaining game of footy.

U15 Gold: Noosa defeated Nambour 26-6 after their long break from footy.

U14 Girls: Well that wraps up the season for the under-14s. It was a physically tough match against a bigger well-drilled Caboolture team.

Sunday morning coming down IT WAS a beautiful Sunday morning in Bali after an unseasonal week of rain, clear and cool with the sun not high enough to hurt, and local families setting up for their ceremonies and games along the sand.

Out on the reef the tide was a bit low but it looked do-able, so I paddled out in the channel without really thinking about it too much.

Halfway out I did a double take as a set closed out the length of the reef a hundred or so metres farther out.

Magic Seaweed was forecasting five to eight feet, and this was definitely at the upper range of that, if not beyond. But the soupy trails diminished as I reached the line-up and it was calm and inviting again.

I picked up the second wave of a mid-sized set and rode it through to the end of the second section, about halfway back to the beach. Then I turned and paddled back. I saw the set feathering on the indicator reef and quickly changed direction, going wide to avoid it. This was my

first mistake. At low tide there is a keyhole section of the reef where the impact of the breaking wave is less, but I had paddled past it, and even as I streaked as hard as I could for the horizon, I knew I wasn’t going to make it.

The lip ripped my board out of my hands and I gave myself up to the washing machine effect, trying to conserve energy.

I popped up and the second wave was upon me. Down again, eyes open, swimming away from the light. The third wave ripped my leash plug out, and as I dived again to get under the fourth, I wondered what I could do for an encore.

I broke the surface and was relieved to find that the set had finished, but I was a spent force, gasp-

ing for air while trying to float on my back to relax myself. I knew that if I could drift south and get over the reef, the breaking waves would wash me in, but the current was taking me north, out into the middle of the bay.

I would have to go with it and hope that I could reach the beach in the next cove.

“You okay, mate?” He was a longhaired Aussie kid on a tiny board.

My pride, my 55 years of surfing experience wanted to say yes, I’m fine.

But survival trumps pride, any day of the week. Hell, I’m 65! I should be playing bowls!

“I need a rest,” I croaked, only then realising that I could barely speak. I slumped across his board as he unfastened his leash. “Is that pink board yours?” he asked. I nodded. “It’s floating out to sea. You take mine in and I’ll swim out and get it.”

He was stroking away from me before I could even acknowledge his kindness.

I struggled to paddle the little wafer into the impact zone where a wave picked me up and hurtled me towards the beach. I lay on the wet black sand, closed my eyes and counted my blessings. In no time at all, the young man was in front of me, holding my board. I thanked him and shook his hand. What else can you do?

“Ah, it’s nothing mate. Look after yourself.” He jumped in and began the long paddle back out.

I like to think I’m pretty fit for my age, but last Sunday was a bit of a wake-up call. The ocean is a fastmoving playing field, particularly here where Indian Ocean swells travel a long way and pack a real punch.

Things can change in an instant, and you have to be ready. I wasn’t. I don’t know what the current statistics are, but in the two years I was researching and writing my book, Bali Heaven and Hell, 11 Australian surfers over the age of 50 drowned in Indonesia.

That’s food for thought.

CRAFT (can’t remember a frickin’ thing) I WROTE last week about my problems of recall as I write a surfing memoir. Well, I thought I had my school days pretty much right, but this week I ran into (not literally) old school and surfing pal Tye Bronneberg in the surf and we got together over a good pinot noir dinner and compared notes from more than 50 years ago.

Turns out I have a different recollection of those years too! As we got into the second bottle, Tye remembered us being chased out of the water by a great white at our home beach, as well as all sorts of juvenile delinquency that was probably better forgotten. Seeing as he was a “headshrink” (his term, not mine) before seeking his fortune in the coffee business, and therefore well-versed in past lives therapy, I’ll have to go with his accounts rather than mine.

So as you read this, I’ll be in a jungle surf camp in West Java, revising, revising.

The Rococos Noosa Tigers went down to ladder leaders and arch rival Maroochydore last Saturday to the tune of 25 points in front of a massive Weyba Road crowd.

The day featured our first Ladies Lunch attracting a bevy of local beauties, a legends game that coincided with our 2016 past players day and a fitting tribute to a past Tiger great and life member Frank Bates.

It certainly made for plenty of action prior to the main game.

On a sizzling July day it was the favourites who dominated the home side with outstanding tackling and pressure and, if not for inaccurate kicking for goal, could have had the game down up by half time.

The Roos led Noosa by some six and a half goals at the main break with a boisterous Tiger faithful concerned we may be in for a blowout. However the Noosa side came out with plenty of heart and grunt and began making in-roads into the deficit as their pressure and general attack on the contest rose.

Once again if not for poor kicking for goal the home side may have even been closer than 22 points at the final change.

The last stanza was a scrappy, mistake riddled affair where neither side showed any real dominance with Maroochydore running out 26 point winners.

The most positive thing to come out of the game is our game style, which we think can match it with the best team in the comp.

After such a close match all day, the after-game comments were that reserves footy had improved a lot and that it had been a great game of football.

Lifesavers need a hand SUNSHINE Beach Surf Life Saving Club began patrols in the season of 1980-'81, making the club one of the youngest surf lifesaving clubs in Queensland.

The community organisation is run by volunteers who are dedicated to protecting members of the public who surf and swim at Sunshine Beach, one of the best open beach surfing breaks in Queensland, and now you can be a part of this great tradition.

Sunshine Beach SLSC is running a pre-season bronze medallion course for new lifesavers.

This six-week course is open to anyone 15 years or older who is interested in joining and becoming a volunteer lifesaver.

Training to become a lifesaver will challenge your way of thinking about the aquatic environment and provide you with the skills and knowledge you will need to help

keep our beaches safe.

You’ll meet others who share the same ideals and become a part of a dynamic surf club that believes in working and playing as a team.

Challenge yourself, meet new friends, get fit, learn new skills and more.

Join the club as an active member and receive a range of other benefits including free gym membership, discounts on club meals, access to professional coaching programs and more.

The course will run Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm and Sundays from 7am to 2pm over a six-week period commencing Tuesday 2 August.

By DOUG McCONNELL Become a volunteer lifesaver at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club.

Juniors on board MEMBERS of the Noosa Boardriders Club have been busy launching a new program for under-6 riders and taking advantage of near-perfect competition conditions.

With a current membership base of more than 120 competitive surfers and swag of social and family members the club is looking to secure its future with the introduction of a “coach and play” division.

The non-competitive coach and play division will be run on Boardrider Sundays and aimed at developing the under-6 surfers who are still on foam boards to ensure the next division up - the under-8s - are strong in numbers and ability.

When it comes to competitions, near-perfect conditions made for great waves at the first round at First Point alongside the Noosa Mal Club, on Sunday 17 July.

Over 70 surfers took part with strong numbers across all age groups.

Mitchell Peterson took out the under-8 division while Lander Smales won the under-10s.

In the under-12 and under-14 divisions, Luke Skelton and Ethan Trotman were winners, with Joe Markwell on show taking out the under-16 division.

Not to be outdone, the extremely competitive girls divisions saw one of the club’s youngest competitors Oli Taylor claim the under-8 girls division while in the under-16 girls the hard charging Georgia Lorentson claimed victory.

The club’s open men and women will be contesting BOQ Noosa’s round two of the extremely popular Shotgun Shootout, on 6 August, with 40 of the region’s best surfers battling it out for the $600 cash purse for the victor.

THE pennant and shield competitions on the Sunshine Coast continue with Noosa Croquet’s pennant team hosting Bribie Island at home.

The visitors came out on top winning six of the eight singles and splitting the doubles for a final result of 7-3.

Noosa managed to score 49 total hoops versus 70 for Bribie.

Noosa’s two singles winners were Colin Hindson and Brian Rudd. Noosa’s doubles winners were Brian Rudd and John Olsen.

The pennant team is slipping but remains in the top half of the table.

The shield team travelled to Caloundra with four players, which meant each player had to play two singles and a doubles match.

In a hard fought contest, Peter Richardson won both singles and his doubles. Margaret Lewins won one of her singles and her doubles. Galina Makarova won one of her singles.

Matches ended even at 5-all, but Caloundra took the day with 56 hoops to Noosa’s 53.

Sensational weekend weather for anglers

By JACK MANGROVE WHAT a weekend it was last weekend - with the breezes dropping and little swell, anglers headed offshore in droves.

There have been some great snapper and pearlies around North Reef and Chardon’s Reef, with micro jigs and soft plastics a great way to fish these areas.

Rigging your plastics on the Berkley Elevator heads is a great way to help tempt these fish from the bottom, in sizes 5/0 and 7/0 and up to 4oz these heads give the plastic a great realistic look.

Sweetlip have been well spread throughout most of the major reefs, with some bigger fish caught during the lower light periods.

Tuna and mackerel continue to be caught around Sunshine Reef with most fish taking live baits on a slow floater. We’ve seen an abundance of live bait on most of the reefs at the moment which always helps with the amount of quality fish on offer.

On the outer reef like the Hards and Barwon Banks, larger snapper, pearl perch, cobia and jew were all accounted for.

In the river, the river mouth and dog beach area have been producing great number of quality bream, whiting and flathead drifting both live and dead baits. Live herring and live worms have been the stand-out baits and pilchards, worms and fresh mullet have been the favourite dead baits.

the river mouth car park rocks sitting in around the eight-foot to 12-foot mark of water. Coolum cabbage has been the favoured bait.

Big schools of trevally have been prevalent throughout the Woods Bays and Noosa Sound area. They have been responding well to surface poppers as well as the Lucky Craft range

of lures. Prawn imitation soft plastics like the Squidgy Prawns have also been doing the job.

Along the Gympie terrace stretch, using live worms has been producing some good whiting as well as quality sized bream.

A little further upriver, the Tewantin stretch and the first ski run has seen school jew in the low lights of the morning and afternoon. Vibe style lures have been dynamite on the jew and the odd trevally.

Lake Cooroibah has been producing great numbers of pan-sized flathead fishing hard bodies in the shallow water as well as brightly coloured soft plastics.

On the beaches, the weather was perfect with a prevailing westerly, the surf was fairly calm and some nice whiting and dart were taken. The top end of the Noosa North Shore has been the place to be if you are chasing tailor. The rocks around Coolum and Noosa National park was also a great place to hook a nice tailor.

Trevally and larger bream have also been on offer in the same areas.

THE Noosa Tennis Club recently held finals after another bumper season of competitive tennis.

The finals came after 14 weeks of games that left only a small margin separating the top four teams that had to tough it out on both nights, Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 July.

Wednesday night saw the team of Nick Tudor, Dave Johns and Sam Sheppard get the best out of themselves with a convincing win over the experienced John Watson, Brett Kazakoff and Roger Lucas.

Player of the night went to Dave, who had an impressive 30 wins out of a possible 36 games, while the overall most valuable player award went to new competitor Sam, with 20 votes for the season.

The Thursday night competition saw a very tight semi-finals match to allow season-favourites Peter Bilton, John Ferguson, Arron Steiner and Laura Livingston to take on Dave McMahon, Adam Townsend, David Hanby and Georgia McMahon.

It was a surprise upset with Georgia winning 25 games out of a possible 36, leading the team to a win. Long-time member Brent Plasier won the MVP award with 18 votes.

With the season wrapped, the new season of night competitions will soon start and new players of all levels are always welcome.

Dolphins up for Kiwi sport today challenge in rugby NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand have an old rivalry when it comes to rugby, and this rivalry starts young.

The Noosa Dolphins have established a tradition of supporting their under-15 rugby team as they travel to New Zealand to learn, play and compete with the closest overseas neighbours.

This year, 20 players, two coaches, and two managers fund-raised over $30,000 for their trip.

The under-15 New Zealand trip has become an important tradition to the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Club because it offers the players a chance to step up and prove that they are now young men, capable of representing their club and community.

On the trip the players experience a different country, different culture, and different teams with different styles.

It’s not all serious business though, the players were also lucky enough to have a bit of leisure time to enjoy some of the sights and activities while they were away. Trips such as these are a very rare opportunity and the Noosa Dolphins certainly made the most of it, playing as hard as they could and taking the time to learn about the local culture, all the while packing in as much experience as they could.

The U15 Noosa Dolphins on a recent trip to New Zealand. they remain rare because without the generous sponsorships that the Dolphins received and the diligent fund-raising they each undertook, the trip would be very costly to the individuals.

Sponsors like Tewantin Noosa RSL, who kindly donated $2000 to the team, make it possible for small clubs and teams such as the Noosa Dolphins under-15s to participate in such big

opportunities.

Club supporters and parents are all looking forward to see the Dolphins put everything they’ve learned on their trip to good use.

Coming to grips with the game

This Noosa Dolphins team has taken to the field with a vengeance, winning all their games so far this season.

NOOSA DOLPHINS U6: Throughout the season, the U6 boys are continuing to learn and have come a long way from running in the wrong direction. Team player Conor Lee worked really hard this week, scoring an awesome try for his team. The passing and sharing skills are starting to form well and the boys are working as a team.

U7 Girls: The Noosa Dolphins had their first under-7 girls team this year and they are off to a flying start. They are so far undefeated after four games against Caloundra, Maleny and the university. Most players are new to

rugby but have taken to it with incredible speed, fitness and tackling ability, making them a force to be reckoned with.

U8: The Noosa Reds lost to the Brothers Rhinos 35-40 in what is the Reds’ first taste of defeat for the season. The deserved winners were skilful across the park with relentless tackling and precision attacking lines. The Reds fought gallantly and made the coaching staff proud with their never-say-die attitude as an exciting game came down to the wire. Player of the match went to Darcy Fairbanks.

U8: The Noosa Fins defeated the St Andrew’s Blue team 75-25. St Andrew’s began and finished strongly with some good cleaning out at the ruck driving through the

advantage line, however the Fins assembled well and with a very good defensive and tackling game they were soon in a position to apply solid attacking pressure. Player of the match went to Phoenix Ericson Wirth.

U10: The Noosa Reds defeated the Noosa Blacks 2012 in what was a match played with tremendous spirit. It was end-to-end entertainment as both teams threw everything at each other - in what really was a tribute to the coaching staff of Aaron, Glenn, Mark, Riccardo, Rob and Sean, who have managed to even out the players available to produce three competitive teams for our age group. Player of the match went to Flynn Charman.

Strength in numbers counts THE Cooroy Gymnastics Club sent a team of eight boys to the newly opened Caloundra Gymnastics Centre for their first competition of the year.

The competition fielded competitors from Wide Bay to Brisbane from levels two to six and for some of the boys it was their first experience of a gymnastics competition with all athletes competing for apparatus and all around placings.

Coach Jeff was very pleased with the team’s performance and especially with the team spirit shown by the gymnasts.

The podium results for the boys was fantastic with the level two boys finishing second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh in the all-round over the six apparatus, and Baylen Jupp finishing second in the all-round at level four.

Baylen also took out second place in the floor competition, the rings, pbars and high bar as well as third place on the vault.

Ashton Davis took out third place all-round as well as in the rings, plus second on the pommel and snagged first place on the p-bar and high bar.

Other placegetters included Jack Curry who won second on the floor

and first place on the rings, Mini Betteridge who took out second place on the p-bars, along with some great performances from Riley Brown and C.J. Connolly.

The team will now focus on the upcoming Sunshine Coast Regional Championships to be held at Maroochydore in August.

It was a hard slog for the Noosa representative netball teams at the recent Representation Netball Carnival with the teams having to battle the players and the weather.

From rain and muddy grounds to steamy courts and then brilliant sunshine, the girls worked hard to gain some great results.

The 13-year-old girls took out first place, while the 12-year-olds won second place and the U13s came runner-up.

By all reports, it was a great day. The last carnival of the representative season is the two day Country Carnival at Tweed Heads on 6 and 7 August.
