Thomas on tour PUFFING Billy Railway’s ‘Day Out with Thomas’ is set to call Gembrook Station home after organisers sought a switch to a larger location.

The move from Emerald Station will also coincide with a rejuvenation of the event, a day out for children which has flourished and continued to grow since its introduction a decade ago.

The planned refresher will include a new imagination station and more room for activities.

Marketing manager at Puffing Billy, Nadine Hutchins, said the move needed to happen.

“Our long-term plan is to develop Gembrook Station into an events location,” she said.

“Emerald has served us well, but it was just getting too small ... we were bursting at the seams.

“We had 18,000 people attend last year throughout our spring and autumn seasons.

“The move will make it less crowded and more pleasant for guests.”

Ms Hutchins was confident there would be little opposition to the move and most would understand their reasoning.

She expected there would be a boost for local traders at Gembrook,

as well as the local market, with more guests being drawn to the town.

So far, Ms Hutchins said the move had little effect on projected crowd numbers.

“We’re already quarter-booked for next season, so that shows that people are willing to travel to Gembrook,” she said.

“However, there are still people who travel to Belgrave, because that’s where they think Puffing Billy lives.

“We’d just like to remind them that Thomas and his friends will, in fact, be in Gembrook.”

The planned activities next season will include ‘meet the Fat Controller’,

jumping castles, animal nursery, face painting, rides on Bulgy Bus and much more.

Ms Hutchins said with the extra space at Gembrook, there would be better photo opportunities with Thomas and his friends.

Meanwhile, Puffing Billy Railway Event Manager, Matt Collopy, said there was great scope to further develop the event in the coming years. “‘A Day Out with Thomas’ is one of the most popular events on Puffing Billy’s calendar, with the highlight being the 35-minute train ride with Thomas and his friends, Percy and Diesel, through the changing landscape of

O’Callaghan lands tourism role

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Yarra Ranges Tourism board has placed its faith in Simon O’Callaghan to help lead the region’s tourism forward.

The coming years are important for the board, as it seeks to help operators transition to an expected Chinese tourist boom.

A chief operating officer at Yarra Ranges Tourism since 2013, Mr O’Callaghan takes on the role in a full-time capacity, as a replacement for Julie Sampson who has worked as the

part-time chief executive for the past three years.

Ms Sampson will still be involved with the organisation on a project basis.

Mr O’Callaghan said it was an exciting time for Yarra Ranges Tourism, as they sought to help facilitate an expected increase of Chinese tourists.

“The tourism market is transitioning before our very eyes, right now,” he said.

“Traditionally, the Yarra Ranges is not used to the Chinese tourist.

“They have a different set of needs, so we need to make sure we’re equipped to give them a great experience.”

Mr O’Callaghan said there was much potential, due to the great tourism products on offer.

“We also have first-generation Melburnians, who have come here for the good education but are seeking a great experience on the weekend,” he said.

“We’re seeing a real cultural shift, especially given our close proximity to Melbourne.”

Mr O’Callaghan said one of the first

duties of the board would be a threeyear strategic plan, which he hoped would help further boost regional tourism.

“The Yarra Ranges does very well on the weekends, but mid-week visitation is an issue we want to address,” he said.

The chair of Yarra Ranges Tourism, Mark Lucas, announced the appointment on Wednesday 20 July.

Mr Lucas said the board decided now was the time for a fulltime chief executive and undertook

an extensive search.

“Simon was chosen following a competitive selection process from a strong field of candidates,” he said.

“His experience in tourism, marketing, digital and governance activities - his energy and collaborative leadership style along with his commitment to and support for the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges over many years all contributed to his appointment.”

Mr Lucas thanked outgoing chief executive Julie Sampson for her tireless work.

Festive take on multiculture

STUDENTS at Belgrave Heights Christian School enjoyed a special treat on Wednesday, 20 July, with renowned author/artist Graeme Base dropping in to visit. Base is the creator of ‘Animalia’, an incredibly detailed picture book which has sold over three million copies and is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary. During the visit, staff volunteered their time to provide voices for some of the ‘Animalia’ characters, as part of the brand new ‘Animalia’ education suite, with student Spencer Dam fulfilling duties as narrator. Base also attended a whole school assembly, where he presented the school with a limited edition, signed print of the ‘Lazy Lions’. COCKATOO’S bid for a premier festival within the township has taken a major step forward, thanks to $5000 funding secured from Cardinia Shire Council.

The Cockatoo Neighbourhood House has been successful in seeking support for plans to establish a significant multicultural festival, with the inaugural event due to kick off this year on Saturday 12 November.

The festival will feature a host of performances, including music and dance, as well as fun children’s activities.

Cockatoo Neighbourhood House coordinator, Hanny Schoen, who is of Dutch origin, believes the festival could turn into something special for the community.

“You don’t see too many other cultures in Cockatoo, so some don’t get to learn about others’ culture,” she said.

“We want the festival to be informative, yet enjoyable for those who attend.

“So they can get to know the differences in culture; so they can work together and understand one another.”

Ms Schoen said the town desperately needed a quality event and believed a multicultural festival would help to fill the void.

“I hope this will one day become the main festival for Cockatoo, and one that would be held annually,” she said.

“It would be great to see a big community event for the town.”

A meeting is set to be held shortly, which will include members of the Cockatoo Township Committee, during which an organising sub-committee is expected to be formed.

Ms Schoen said organisers still required significant backing and support from the community, particularly anyone who could volunteer at the event.

They are also seeking input, such as ideas for entertainment, stands/stalls, food and any other activities.

All multicultural residents are encouraged to become involved.

Police seek man

By PETER DOUGLAS DETECTIVES from Knox Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are seeking further information about a stalking incident in Upwey earlier this month.

Investigators have released an image of a man they wish to speak with, or are seeking someone who may be able to identify him.

The man was wearing a red hoodie,

grey T-shirt and blue plants.

Investigators have been told a woman was walking her dog from McNicol Road to Burwood Highway, Tecoma, when she was approached by a man.

He attempted to start a conversation with her, but she ignored him.

The man then proceeded to follow her for a further 1.5km, during which she observed him hiding and then reappearing ahead of her.

The woman finally arrived at her Upwey home, which she entered through the rear entrance via her neighbour’s backyard.

It is not know why the man was following the woman and she was not physically harmed.

In brief Parakeets stolen

Detectives are seeking to identify this man over an incident in Upwey.

POLICE are hunting for a thief who made off with four valuable parakeets from a Monbulk property earlier this month and are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said the parakeets were stolen from a property on Monbulk Road in Monbulk overnight between Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July.

He said an aviary was broken into and the four birds - two males and two females, worth $2000 in total - were stolen.

Sgt Berardi said the birds were “fairly distinctive” with the males bearing a black ring around their necks.

He urged anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au.

Tools taken A BELGRAVE South shop owner is reeling from the loss of $4000 worth of tools after a burglary earlier this month, and police are asking for public assistance to find the culprit.

Between 3.30am and 4.30am on Saturday 16 July, a hardware shop on BelgraveHallam Road in Belgrave South was broken into.

Chainsaws and power tools were among the items stolen and police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au.

By PETER DOUGLAS THE click-clacking of knitting needles isn’t what one would expect to hear at a protest.

But Knitting Nannas Against Gas members used the popular pastime as a form of peaceful protest last week outside the office of Monbulk MP James Merlino.

More than one dozen protesters voiced their opinions on Thursday 21 July in Belgrave’s main street along with grandmothers from Seaspray in Gippsland to urge Mr Merlino to support a ban on onshore gas mining in Victoria.

The group said Victorian communi-

ties have been asking for a ban for the past five years with 73 Victorian communities opting to ‘lock their gates’ to the industry.

They said, on average, 95 per cent of people surveyed in these communities wanted a ban on unconventional gas mining.

At the Belgrave protest, group members surveyed 123 community members.

The group said more than 96 per cent of people polled supported a permanent ban while the rest either needed more information or supported other forms of stricter regulation.

Spokesperson Di Flint from Seaspray said her community was at risk and im-

plored the hills community to get behind the cause.

“We came to Belgrave to protect our homes, our communities and farming businesses from the threat of onshore gas,” she said.

“We know the gasfields can’t exist alongside farming and tourism.

“Only a ban on onshore gas will protect our water and the future of our community.

“It’s fantastic to see so many local people in the hills supporting communities like ours in Gippsland and Victoria.

Spokesperson Merlin Brown said Mr Merlino needed to be made aware that people in his electorate are against on-

shore gas mining.

“The local community around Belgrave were supporting people in Gippsland and Western Victoria who are facing invasive gasfield developments in their communities,” she said.

“I’m shocked to see some of the terrible effects fracking and gasfields have had in Queensland and overseas.”

In response, Mr Merlino praised their efforts to protest in a peaceful manner.

“It’s great to see people who are passionate and engaged about different issues in the community and I’m always happy to listen to their views and concerns,” he said.

POLICE are searching for a would-be burglar who searched through an Upwey property earlier this month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said a burglar forced their way into a commercial property in the main street sometime between 10pm on Saturday 16 July and 7.30am the following day.

The next day the business owner found that while the premises had been searched, no items had been stolen.

Time to heal the rifts The state of

LIVING in the Dandenongs, we live with the threat of bushfires and we rely on the CFA to keep us safe.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of local communities like ours in the hills, and that will never change.

As the local member and Emergency Services Minister, I want to address portrayals in the media that give the impression that our fire services are divided.

There will always be legitimate differences of opinion about the future of emergency services - as a

government, we accept this.

However, talk of ‘war’ and of ‘conflict’ is divisive, dangerous, and just plain wrong.

I know it is wrong because it ignores what happens on the frontline in responding to emergencies each and every day - where we see both career and volunteer members working side by side to save lives.

My focus as Minister, and the focus of the Victorian Government, is on strengthening our fire and emergency services to keep our communities safe.

Since becoming Emergency Services Minister, I have been travelling around the state, meeting career and volunteer fire-fighters.

There is one thing every firefighter I’ve met has in common they all want this bitter dispute to end.

There have been many lies told about the new CFA agreement, and

these lies are causing unnecessary concern.

Under the agreement, CFA volunteer fire stations will continue operating as they always have - with their own independence, their own special connections to the community, and their own unique knowledge of their local area.

The agreement will specifically state that “the role of volunteers in fighting bushfires and maintaining community safety and delivering high quality services to the public in remote and regional areas and in integrated stations, is not altered by this agreement”.

To suggest it will destroy the CFA is irresponsible and fear mongering at its worst.

Likewise, there is no veto power in this agreement.

The other myth being peddled is that volunteer fire-fighters will be forced to stand around watching a

fire burn while they wait for career fire-fighters to arrive.

This is rubbish.

Fire-fighters first on the ground will tackle the fire immediately.

The need to dispatch seven firefighters to a fire ground only applies to 34 integrated stations in highly populated areas, like Frankston and Geelong.

This won’t apply to the other 1200 CFA stations around our state - that’s 97 per cent of them.

THESE grandmothers are fed up and they’re seeking to create change.

Although only in their fourth month since formation, the La Trobe chapter of Grandmothers against Detention of Refugee Children (GADRC) is seeking to effect great change within the political landscape.

Already with 100 members on their mailing list, and with many of those active within the group, the GADRC are making inroads into some lofty ambitions.

First on their agenda is a 2000-signature petition which they

will soon present to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tony Smith, as well as members of the Lower House.

The petition asks the government to re-consider its policies with respect to refugee and asylum-seeker children.

Member Virginia Schneiders said she has been thrilled with the enthusiasm of the group.

“I’ve been really surprised at how well it’s gone, we’ve hit the ground running and members are really passionate about this issue,” she said.

“Our prime goal is to change policy and inform the public.

“We’re finding many people are ill-informed and we hope to do something about it.

“We’ll send off this petition soon to the Lower House, with the Upper House to follow soon after.”

Ms Schneiders paid tribute to the Emerald Community House, with their assistance proving vital in helping to establish the group.

She said it had helped them to get on their feet and be pro-active within the community.

“We’ve attended the Belgrave Lantern Parade and undertaken street walks,” she said.

“We’ve received enormous sup-

port from the community, with very little opposition to our cause.”

Though, Ms Schneiders said there was plenty of work left to do as they hoped to affect genuine change.

With this in mind, she encouraged others in the community to join them on their quest.

Curtis down but not out

By PETER DOUGLAS WHILE it may feel like an eternity since polling day, the race for La Trobe 2016 has been run and won.

Labor candidate Simon Curtis officially conceded on Monday, 18 July, and congratulated incumbent MP Jason Wood on his victory, as well as all candidates who ran in the 2016 federal election.

Although not gaining La Trobe, Mr Curtis has made significant inroads into the seat and turned La Trobe into a truly marginal electorate.

On a two-candidate basis, Mr Curtis gained a swing of 2.51 per cent for Labor on the previous election and picked up 48.50 per cent of the vote.

Mr Curtis said he was proud of all who helped his campaign and was pleased by what they had achieved.

Post-election, he has begun teaching again in a part-time capacity with his previous employer, Beaconhills College in Pakenham, with a view to returning there full-time next year.

However, he said his political journey was not over.

“I’m enjoying teaching again at the moment, I’ve always loved that,” he said.

“But I will continue to be active in the political space, as you would expect.

“It’s disappointing not to win, but we can certainly be proud of our efforts.

“This was a campaign run by local people, for local people.”

Mr Curtis said he would be closely monitoring the Turnbull Government and Mr Wood, with the latter making numerous tourism-related election promises.

“They’ve certainly made a lot of promises and we’ll be looking closely at that,” he said.

“We’ll be also watching with great interest about the changes to the medical system - certainly the writing is on the wall - whether you call it privatisation or a death by 1000 cuts.”

Mr Curtis said he’d also observe the progress of the proposed plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

Meanwhile, on his Facebook page, Mr Wood thanked his rival.

“Thankyou to Simon Curtis, the ALP candidate who rang today to congratulate me,” he said.

“I personally wish him the best in his future as an educator, and I thank him for running what was a decent campaign.”

Although La Trobe continues its long run of Liberal victories, the minor parties enjoyed a strong showing in 2016, with most making up ground on their 2013 showing.

Perhaps the surprise packet came from Julieanne Lynette Doidge of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, who gained 3896 votes, or 4.23 per cent of the first preference count.

Leah Folloni from the Animal Justice Party also made a significant impact for the minors, gaining 2650 votes, or 2.88 per cent of the first preference count.

Jeffrey Bartram from the Family First Party also fared well, gaining 2.45 per cent.

Martin Leahy of the Sex Party picked up 2.26 per cent, which was a 0.53 per cent increase on the party’s previous performance.

Ms Folloni said she had expected the minor parties to do well.

“I’m not surprised by how well we

Call forensics HAVING read (La Trobe MP) Jason Wood’s analysis of the poor election showing of the Liberal Party in the ‘Mail’ (‘Our campaign stupid: Wood’; 12 July), I question his capacity for forensic analysis, so essential in his previous employment as a detective.

Sure, the Liberals' campaign was stupid compared with the carefully crafted, policy focused campaign followed by (Labor leader, Bill) Shorten and Labor.

Turnbull’s chopping and changing over an increase in the GST, negative gearing and state income taxation inspired no electoral confidence.

Abbott’s excruciatingly embarrassing Prime Ministership post 2013 was never forgotten by the electorate, especially as Prime Minister Turnbull failed to fully repudiate Abbott’s policies.

Antics of Liberals in high office, such as Bronwyn Bishop and Jamie Briggs, and the shameful incarceration of refugees on Manus and Nauru, added to the perception they were unworthy of government.

Now, as to Jason Wood’s claim that Labor’s ‘Mediscare’ campaign frightened votes away from the Coalition, Jason should examine the following: * The AEC had not even finalised the House of Representatives results before members of the AMA began campaigning for a revisit of patient co-payments for doctor’s visits. Any additional cost to patients for doctor’s visits is privatised Medicare by stealth - the very focus of Labor’s campaign; * Past Liberal campaigns are littered with lies such as ‘children overboard’ and ‘Iraqi weapons of mass destruction’; * The Coalition’s support for the big polluters of the fossil fuel industries and throttling of funding for renewables was not ignored by the electorate; Jason Wood, instead of calling for ‘union bashing and law and order campaigns’, you would be better advised to counsel the new Liberal Government to avoid further three-word slogans and to focus upon the families and their concerns.

Great sense of achievement

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A COUPLE from Monbulk who have roughly 40 years of environmental volunteering between them are encouraging more people to get involved in local groups.

Bill and Jan Incoll have worked over many years to improve their local environments and say they would love to see more people get out and lend a hand.

The Incolls said that the groups they have worked in have seen a declined in members over the years they have been volunteering.

“There are many volunteer groups around the Dandenong Ranges who all have the same problem,” Mr Incoll said.

Bill Incoll started his work as an environmental volunteer in 1993 as a founding member of the Friends of Ferny Creek.

Since then he has been involved in many more groups that have made vast improvements in restoring the native vegetation of the Dandenong Ranges.

Jan Incoll has been a member of the 58-year-old Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group, the oldest continuous friends group in Victoria, for 17 years.

Both Bill and Jan said there are many benefits to volunteering that go beyond helping to improve the environment for the native wildlife.

They say the social and learning aspects of volunteering are just as important as the work that gets done.

“We need committed people and people who are happy to lean, and you will learn a lot,” Mrs Incoll said.

“There are three streams of volunteering - work, education and social.

“It’s not just working for five hours and that’s it, there is a balance of those three streams,” she said.

Bill and Jan Incoll say it's fun to be involved.

Bill Incoll likened the friends groups he has worked with to that of “an outdoor men’s shed”.

“Most people enjoy the social contact and that’s the major benefit you get,” he said.

“You are in a group working together to achieve a thing you all think is useful and when you work all afternoon and look back at what you have done you feel a great sense of achievement.”

The Incolls said the environmental

volunteer groups in the Dandenong Ranges need more people to get involved to maintain the great results they have achieved.

“We want to keep people involved and give them something they would like to do so they keep coming back

because they like it and because they are involved,” Mr Incoll said.

When taxes won’t just go away YOU haven’t put in a tax return for a year or two ... maybe even four or five!

You’re probably the ‘only’ person in Australia who hasn’t, and, after all, the tax man is pretty busy.

He’ll probably never even notice!

You don’t even want to think about the massive interest and penalties.

So, the best thing you can do is keep a low profile and put it off for another year!

Right?

Wrong!

Wrong, wrong ... and, according to Healesville tax accountant, Michelle Labahn - wrong again!

As the principal of Michelle Labahn and Associates in Healesville, Ms Labahn is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), and a member of the National Tax and Accountants Association (NTAA).

Ms Labahn has good news; and good advice for tax procrastinators.

First: You are not alone.

“It happens to more people than you think,” she said.

Second: It’s never too late. Even with missing group certificates and other documents, it can be sorted “quickly, easily and painlessly”.

Third: Penalties, if any, are usually minimal.

“High penalties and interest are a bit of a myth,” Ms Labahn said.

“They usually work out to be very minimal and, if the person is a wage and salary earner, often there is a refund.

Don’t put off your tax return any longer. 157155 “If paperwork is incomplete, you can apply for a copy of your group certificate from previous employers, or from Centrelink, or you can do a statutory declaration.”

For parents on certain Centrelink payments, however, it is critical that a tax return is done every year.

Ms Labahn said; “As soon as someone goes one year (without putting in a return), they are in trouble. If they are on a child payment from Centrelink, they will be asked to repay any money they have received.”

But most of all, catching up with your tax returns, before the Australian

Taxation Office catches up with you, brings enormous peace of mind.

“Most people who are in that situation really worry about it,” Ms Labahn said.

“They think they are going to be in big trouble, but, really, it never works

out like that.“ Of course, there is some reason to worry.

The tax man is busy ... but not ‘that’ busy.

Sooner, or later, the letter will come and, some people end up in court.

Ghostbusters is frequently very funny, with some amusing cameos and clever in-jokes about the film’s various controversies, and the action scenes are exciting, particularly the creative, energetic climax.

There is an enjoyably loose, seat-of-the-pants flow to the plot of Ghostbusters, and there is a nifty parallel between the (female) characters needing to prove themselves in a society that frequently underestimates them with the film itself seeking to prove itself within the broader franchise - and succeeding.

The only major problems in Ghostbusters are the poorly-explained nature of the ghosts and the villain being somewhat of an afterthought.

Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I think this film is just as good as the original 1984 Ghostbusters.

Moussaka is a winter warmer

By KATH GANNAWAY Ingredients 500g minced lean beef or lamb 4 medium size eggplants 2 cans chopped tomatoes 1/2 small red capsicum, diced 1 red onion, diced 6 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves chopped 2 tsp tomato paste 1 glass of red wine 1 tsp dried, or 3tbs fresh, chopped, oregano 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp garam masala Salt and ground black pepper to taste.

Bechamel sauce 80g butter 80g plain white flour 600ml full cream milk 50g grated parmesan cheese 1/4 tsp nutmeg.

Saute garlic, onion and capsicum in 2tbs of olive oil until soft.

Add mince to the onion/garlic mix and stir until the mince is browned.

Add the wine, tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano and cumin and simmer uncovered for an hour. Stir to ensure even cooking. Season to taste.

Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees.

Slice eggplants into 1cm slices and sprinkle both sides with salt. Leave for 20 minutes, wash salt off and pat dry with paper towel.

Place eggplant slices on trays, brush with remaining olive oil and cook for 25-30 minutes.

Season with salt and black pepper.

Our gardens lift the spirits

By KATH GANNAWAY WINTER is a great time for Scrabble and DVDs, but enough is enough ... sometimes you just have to break out, recharge your batteries and go visit a garden ... or two.

From the Dandenong Ranges through to the Yarra Valley and up to Marysville, there are some truly beautiful winter gardens to lift the spirits.

Apart from the winter flowers that abound in a number of gardens, it’s a great time to appreciate the sculptural beauty of the tree trunks and branches left bare of their leaves, and the ferns and mosses that are at their most vibrant at this time of year.

Here are some suggestions for public and private gardens.

Among the Dandenong Ranges is the George Tindale Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke. The gardens offer something new each season but the flowering Hellebores are especially beautiful.

The Alfred Nicholas Gardens, also in Sherbrooke, and Pirianda Gardens and the National Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda feature wonderful fern gullies and, with sealed pathways, are suitable for all ages.

All about your colour scheme Q: HOW do I start the process of choosing my colour scheme?

A: For exteriors, some people like to be inspired by their surrounds; i.e. forest, beach, arty architectural city ... and select colours that are found there.

Those colours can be downplayed or enhanced depending on personal taste. Interiors can be inspired by a favourite artwork or piece of furniture, or often a picture from a magazine that makes them feel happy and we can build on that and customise the look to suit.

Q: I don’t want colour in every room. Are there some colours I can use as a ‘base’?

A: Yes! From soft whites to dusty French blues, and pale driftwoods and olives, there are many ‘neutral’ tones available.

Q: How do I actually prepare surfaces to begin painting?

A: On unpainted or bare surfaces, and places where a lot of repair has been needed, a light sand, wash with sugar soap and a good rinse before using an undercoat. Some pre-painted areas may only need a good wash and a light sand before painting. Ask questions! Your local paint shop will always be happy to help you and guide you through these steps.

Q: I like feature walls but how do I choose where they should be?

A: A general guide is to choose a wall that you often look at but find boring. A feature doesn’t always have to be a dark-colour paint; sometimes a soft white wall in a room of colour is a great feature to hang that favourite picture on. Wallpapers are also a fabulous feature; they can really ‘set a theme’ that can be followed throughout the home. A lot of modern wallpapers don’t even need to be wet to apply, and they can strip right off with no trouble when you wish to change the decor.

Q: What are the most important ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ when I am painting?

A: The most important point is ... don’t rush! Take your time and you will only have to do it once. Another tip is to buy the best quality paint you can; often the ‘cheap’ paints take twice as much time and product for a less than satisfactory finish.

With brushes and paint rollers, be guided to the correct tool by your experienced paint shop people and make sure it feels comfortable for you to use.

Remember to ask questions.

As you move through your home, you will gain more confidence and when you’re done, you will have a beautiful home that you can be proud of, knowing you did it!

Winter habitat for native insects DO you like insects?

They make some people uncomfortable, but I think they’re incredible.

Did you know that insects pollinate over 70 per cent of the world’s commercial edible crops and perform multiple roles to produce healthy soil types?

Did you know that without the nutritious food that insects help prepare for us, we would struggle to survive?

In turn, we can do more to help our native insect friends.

Their habitats are being increasingly destroyed in our post-industrial world, and native insects are often victims of invasive species or pesticides that are not meant for them.

One way we can look after our Yarra Ranges’ insects this winter is by providing habitats for them in our own backyards.

Ecologist Michael Smith A habitat needs the right mix of food, shelter and ‘landscape complexity’.

If you want to attract native bees and butterflies, introduce lots of indigenous flowering plants on the northern side of your property.

Aussie bees use their tongues, while butterflies have proboscises to suck food from native plants.

Take a look at the beautiful hop goodenia and flowering bluebells in Wesburn Reserve or the flowering

lobelia, heath and correa plants in Chum Creek to get some ideas as to what plants to introduce into your garden.

To attract as many species as possible, your habitat should also have landscape complexity – plant a diverse range of trees and plants with different heights and forms in clusters.

Insects have unique behaviors and each species will use the same space differently.

For example, resin bees like living in wooden holes, beetles enjoy hanging out among grasses, and honey bees will take nectar from tall trees.

Insects feel more protected in a complex habitat and the different plant species give them more options for food and shelter.

If you like, you can go one step

further and make ‘insect motels’ for your backyard, because this will help your insect friends protect themselves from the elements and hide from predators.

Here are some local plants that, when planted together and flourishing in winter, will give you a good mix of food, shelter and landscape complexity: Grasses: microlaena and indigenous poa species; Smaller plants: oxalis, bluebells and Brachyscome multifida; Medium plants: bearded heath, hop goodenia, hedge wattle, pomaderris and correa reflexa; Trees: golden wattle and lightwood wattle.

Best friend or worst enemy at the grates?

IS YOUR wood fire an indulgence or a life-threatening danger?

On a cold winter night it’s nice to settle down in front of a wood fire. But if that wood fire isn’t being properly maintained, it could turn into a big risk.

CFA Operations Manager Stewart Kreltszheim said: “All too often CFA members attend house fires which are caused by chimney fires or burning logs rolling out of the fire and starting a fire on carpets. Either source can often result in severe damage to, or loss of the house. The sad fact is that many of these fires are easily preventable.”

Mr Kreltszheim went on to say that chimney fires were caused by the accumulation of creosote and other products of incomplete combustion in the chimney. Over a period of months these products build up in the chimney as a coating and when subjected to strong heat from the fire ignite in the chimney with a real potential to start a fire in the roof.

There is a danger that these fires, burning in the roof space above smoke alarms, or in wall cavities, can go undetected until they are substantial, lifethreatening fires.

He said minimising the risk of

chimney fires was simple. Before you intend to start using the fire, clean the chimney and inspect the fireplace or firebox. You should also ensure that there are no flammable materials stored near the fireplace.

You may also do an additional cleaning in mid-winter to be extra sure that you won’t have to face a chimney fire.

You may be able to do this yourself if you can safely work on the roof and have a suitable chimney brush. If not there are professional chimney cleaners who can clean your chimney and check their integrity.

It’s also worth checking the roof space to make sure that there is nothing flammable close to the chimney.

Mr Kreltszheim added that chimney fires weren’t limited to houses. They could occur in commercial premises, including hotels and guesthouses. Indeed any premises with wood fires had the potential for chimney fires.

Protecting your house from a fire caused by burning logs rolling out is surprisingly easy. Having a fire guard in front of a fire keeps burning logs in and stops children from falling into the fire. Removing carpets and rugs from in front of the fire also helps.

Mr Kreltszheim concluded by asking some important questions. When you go to bed tonight are you sure that your wood fire won’t lead to a chimney fire? Have you taken care to make sure that your chimney has been cleaned to minimise the risk of fire? Have you taken a minute to smell for smoke or the smell of very hot metal? Do you have working smoke alarms?

Chimney fires are avoidable. Regularly cleaned and serviced chimneys and working smoke alarms could save your family’s lives.

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics competed at the little Athletics State Cross Country Championships over the weekend of 2324 July at a boggy Cruden Farm.

The historic surroundings provided extra motivation for the club athletes with every athlete performing exceptionally well.

THE talented team at 1812 Theatre Company is preparing to again delight audiences, this time with their stage version of ‘Driving Miss Daisy’.

The play is best-known for its film adaptation of the same name, released in 1989, which won numerous accolades, including numerous Academy Award nominations.

The film, which starred Morgan Freeman (as Hoke Colburn) and Jessica Tandy (as Daisy Werthan) is often cited as a modern classic.

Set against a backdrop of changing world events between 1948 and

1973, the narrative centres around a feisty Southern widow and her proud but soft-spoken black chauffeur.

The performance is described as a journey from suspicion and mistrust to respect and deep-rooted affection.

The final five for Division 1 has opened up slightly.

Wandin had a surprisingly big win over Healesville, Olinda completely outclassed Mt Evelyn, Warburton lost in the final minutes against Upwey, while Monbulk keep their final chances alive.

The final five for Division 2 is another story.

With only four rounds to go, it is anyone’s guess what the five will look like.

Yarra Glen, Kinglake, Gembrook and Alexandra share top spot, with Seville and Yea 8 points behind them.

Yarra Glen have a tough road home, having to play Seville and Gembrook which both had wins earlier in the season.

Division 1 Seniors Monbulk 23.13.151 d Belgrave 8.8.56 Monbulk got off to a great start, kicking 6.4 to 1.3 and had probably a match-winning lead at the first break.

They extended their lead at halftime to 38 points.

Yarra Glen attempted to get their running game, but Alexandra were far too strong running out 22-point winners.

Monbulk junior football results THE Monbulk Junior Hawks were greeted by beautiful winter sun.

It was a shortened program with two teams having byes.

The 9Bs were back to Mount Evelyn this week and they started off with great intensity around the ball.

They played well through the middle of the game.

During the last quarter and a half, the team played some great footy; tackling well, rucking well and turning the ball on quickly, which resulted in goals.

Tackling was terrific.

When the team got the ball moving, they looked really good.

THE last round of the threeround Winter Cup at Emerald Golf Club was played last Saturday, with Peter Glasscock (14) going in as leader followed by Ken Hill (17) 2 points in arrears.

The 22mm of rain overnight ignited the play of Hill when he stormed home for an emphatic win by five points by amassing 115 stableford points for the three rounds.

Glasscock was five points back on 110 while Leigh Morison (17) and Dean Shannon (15) another five back on 105.

The rest succumbed to the watery greens, mediocrity and a general torpor.

Hill won the daily comp with 42 and Peter Jones (23) was the king of the kids in B Grade with 38 points.

Of the stragglers, it was left to Shannon to score 38, Morison 37 and Ben Balfour

36 to head up the rest of the push.

John Fisher was nearest the pin on the fourth, Sepp Krummenacher the seventh, Hill the 12th, Balfour the 13th and Peter Jones grabbed the pro pin drachma on the 18th.

Glasscock powered a long drive down the ninth fairway to win the longest drive gong.

Brianna McCoy, once again, showed the ladies how to conquer the opposition with a clear win from Aileen Ecclestone back in second place.

Hill, who has hit a rich vein of form, won the bikkies on Wednesday when the Old a Forgotten Golfers turned up for a round of stableford.

He scored 40 points.

Sepp Krummenacher was next on 39, then Peter Clowes 37, while Ken Sumsion and Neil Whiteside played to their handicaps for 36.

Motoring Cars are for the trees YARRA Valley Toyota is excited to announce they will be supporting Schools Tree Day at Ruskin Park Primary School in Croydon on Friday, 29 July.

Tree Day was co-founded by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John in 1996.

Since then, more than 3.5 million

Aussies have planted some 21 million trees and shrubs across the country.

Cars keep catching fire VICTORIA’S fire services have attended an average of two accidental vehicle fires per day day over the past two years, according to the RACV. Cars were involved in the vast majority of accidental vehicle fires, but the figures also include trucks and recreational vehicles, some of which were towing caravans or camper trailers.

Electrical and mechanical problems, which for the most part are preventable, were the major causes of the fires.

In CFA’s District 8, there were 137 such incidents, which takes in Dandenong, Frankston, Portsea, Pakenham, Wonthaggi and Phillip Island.

MFB Commander Andrew O’Connell said electrical and mechanical problems, such as fuel leaks, were among the most common causes of vehicle fires.

“Most of these fires are extremely preventable,” he said.

“There was one case that I remember where the car battery wasn’t strapped down properly and the battery shifted and shorted out, sparking a fire.

“I’ve also seen plenty of cars that were leaking petrol through perished fuel hoses.

“It’s so important that people get their cars serviced regularly and make sure that any issues are rectified as soon as possible.

“Prevention is always better than cure.”

Tips on how to prevent vehicle fires (from MFB): Get your car serviced regularly and ensure that any problems are rectified as soon as possible; Never leave canisters of gas or other flammable products in the cabin of the car and ensure the car is well ventilated; Consider keeping a dry chemical fire extinguisher in your car and make sure you know how to use it before the fire starts; Be aware of the warning signs: cracked or loose wiring, electrical problems, fuel leaks, rapid changes in fuel level or higher than normal engine temperature, abnormal noises or vibrations or warning lights on the dashboard; Only replace a blown fuse

In the event that the fuse blows a second time, then it is a sign of a potentially serious fault and needs to be investigated by a qualified service agent; Don’t drive your car through long grass because the grass can be ignited by the heat from the engine and exhaust system.

When driving, if you smell burning or smoke, act immediately by pulling over as soon as it is safe to do so.

Once you have pulled over at a safe location, turn off the engine and get out of the car.

Walk away from the car and stay out of the smoke.

Call triple-zero to alert the emergency services.

Only use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small and you know how to use the extinguisher safely.

Only attempt to retrieve belongings from the car if the fire is small and you are not exposed to the smoke.
