The mid-week trial would follow Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s launch of ferry services between Wyndham and Docklands by the same company involved in the Portarlington plan.

Port Phillip Ferries conducted a â&#x20AC;&#x153;safety and speed trialâ&#x20AC;? of the Portarlington-Docklands run last month.

Bellarine Ferry Group revealed the impending Portarlington passenger trial in an email to members and local stake-

holders this week.

Port Phillip Ferries had sent a vessel to help Parks Victoria build a temporary berth to allow the passenger trial, Geoff Henderson wrote in the ferry group email alert. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We expect that a full passenger trial will take place before the end of July. The trial will be from Portarlington to Docklands and return.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Henderon said the trial would be mid-week on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;first-in, first-servedâ&#x20AC;? basis for anyone wanting to board the ferry.

Port Phillip Ferries said in June that a

passenger trial would â&#x20AC;&#x153;be conducted in the coming monthâ&#x20AC;?, subject to the speed and safety test.

The company was unable to confirm a trial date before the Indy went to press late Thursday afternoon.

But in May the Indy report that Port Phillip Ferries chairman Paul Little said the company would be â&#x20AC;&#x153;very happyâ&#x20AC;? to operate from Portarlington if demand was sufficient.

Port Phillip Ferriesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; began its Werribee service on 16 May following a trial run to Docklands.

Thousands of people shrugged off cold weather to wander Geelong’s waterfront this week in search of characters from a new mobile phone game.

The waterfront and central city emerged as local hotspots for Pokemon Go, which emerged as a national craze this week following the game’s worldwide release.

Players stalked the waterfront with smart phones during the day and after dark, trying to find and “capture” Pokemon cartoon characters such as Pikuchu, Psyduck and Squirtle.

The characters appear on phones as users wander into locations the game identifies as Pokemon hang-outs.

Geelong landmarks such as the waterfront Carousel, National Wool Museum, Johnstone Park and Steampacket Gardens were among numerous local sites where players encountered the characters this week.

Passers-by estimated that there were up to 500 players along the waterfront on Wednesday night alone despite cold, windy weather.

Players were even travelling “fair distancTHEY'RE EVERYWHERE: es” to central Geelong Jaimie Allotta with a Rattata at the Indy office. for its prolific population of Pokemon characters, said Paul Telfer, of city gaming centre Guf. “It’s absolutely going off,” he said.

“My children are playing it, my staff are playing it - it’s just getting people out of the house.”

Mr Telfer credited Geelong’s many “early adopters” of technology for delivering the city’s substantial population of Pokemon Go characters.

Geelong gamers were big users of Ingress, a predecessor location-based online game that provided geographic points for Pokemon Go, he said.

Mr Telfer expected interest in the new game to continue as new characters and features emerged.

“It’s phenomenal.”

Aboriginal ‘King’ invoked in cemetery tower battle Objectors have invoked the legend of an Aboriginal leader to stop Telstra building a tower in a Geelong cemetery.

The mobile phone tower would dishonour the gravesite of Willem Baa Nip, or ‘King Billy’, who was buried in a Western Cemetery tomb with six other Aborigines, a tribunal hearing heard this week.

The tomb was a “portal” to the region’s Indigenous past, wrote Ron Milligan in a submission on behalf of Geelong One Fire Reconciliation Group.

“We believe that the erection of what is basically a commercial project in this cemetery diminishes the sanctity of a space that should be reserved for quiet reflection.”

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) heard submissions over three days this week.

Telstra wants to build the 35.7-metre tower within the grounds of the cemetery to improve mobile coverage around western Geelong but has encountered widespread resistance.

The issue reached VCAT after Geelong’s council received more than 370 objections to the tower last year.

Geelong Cemeteries Trust signed a lease with Telstra to build the tower on a soil storage area within the cemetery but the dispute with objectors must be settled for the proposal to secure planning approval.

Mr Milligan’s submission said the tomb of King Billy, who died in 1885 as the last of the Barrabool tribe, was important to reconciliation.

Annette Xiberras, on behalf of Lara-based “cultural heritage planners” Urban Colours, also argued against the tower on Indigenous history grounds.

The “visual impact” would disrespect the cemetery’s Aboriginal graves, she wrote.

Thieves and vandals are “increasingly turning their attention” to Geelong car owners, according to a leading insurer. The city was Victoria’s worst for stolen-car claims after a 31 per cent increase last year, the RACV said.

The number of claims for vandalism of cars was unchanged but the value of repairs skyrocketed by 124 per cent to more than $200,000, the company’s 2015 figures revealed.

The car-claim figures follow the RACV last week reporting a hike in claims related to Geelong household burglaries that ranked Geelong second worst in the state.

The RACV data also indicated a link between car thefts and burglaries.

“More than 5 per cent of RACV vehicle theft claims last year involved the thief stealing car keys from inside a house before taking the vehicle.

“Don’t leave your car keys in plain view - even inside your own home,” said the RACV’s Mark Geraghty.

“In some instances keys were left in the ignition or elsewhere in a car in a locked garage, which makes it easy for a thief who has broken into the garage.”

“I add my voice to those locals against this,” he said.

Telstra’s Duane Dalton told the Indy in December that numerous factors determined where the company could site mobile base stations.

“It’s especially important to locate the sites as close as possible to the customers the site is intended to serve,“ Mr Dalton said.

“Due to the growth in demand in Herne Hill the cemetery has been decided as the best place, to provide the most coverage to people living in the area.”

VCAT will release its decision at a later date.

“Aboriginal graves should not be dismissed as being considered unworthy of your protection”, she advised VCAT. Ms Xiberras also raised cemetery trust regulations stipulating that cemeteries “cannot be built on until 100 years after the last person has been buried”.

The issue reached the floor of Federal Parliament late last year when Corio MP Richard Marles told colleagues that Telstra had made an “error or judgement” and must “listen to the community”.

“As part of the Armstrong Creek Growth Area project, developers are constructing a new signalised intersection at the corner of Warralily Boulevard and Horseshoe Bend Road,” a statement said.

“To enable the works to proceed Horseshoe Bend Road at Armstrong Creek will be closed to all traffic from Tuesday 19 July to Friday 16 December.

“Detours will be in place for the duration of the full road closure and will be signposted.”

An 80 per cent rise in number-plate thefts across Geelong has prompted police and SES units to offer free security upgrades beginning this weekend.

Four “Safe Plate” days would fit one-way screws to number plates free of charge to prevent further thefts, Victoria Police said.

The Indy reported in May that number plate thefts were increasing but the latest police figures indicated the trend was continuing around greater Geelong.

Police recorded 779 thefts in the 12 months to March, up nearly 80 per cent on the total for 2014.

Number plate thefts were often a precursor to other crimes including service station drive-offs and toll evasion, Geelong Sergeant James Constance said.

He urged vehicle owners to attend the Safe Plate events over the next four Saturdays, which police would host in partnership with the

Victorian State Emergency Service (SES).

About eight jobs at Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Australian Geographic store are under a cloud amid reports its owner could close the chain.

The 67 stores were likely to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;wound downâ&#x20AC;? after Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Myer family failed to find a buyer, Fairfax Media reported.

The family set a March 2017 deadline for lease-takeovers after the chain posted multi-million dollar losses in the past two financial years.

Staff at Australian Geographic in Westfield Geelong were â&#x20AC;&#x153;waiting to hear a bit moreâ&#x20AC;? from management, a team member told the Geelong Indy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty shocking. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all quite saddened by it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pretty much all we know is whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been released. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s understandable, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a business decision and we have to respect that. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the moment we seem to be staying open, hopefully through Christmas but there are no guarantees.â&#x20AC;?

She knew nothing about beauty pageants until just two months ago but country girl Siobhan Liston is learning fast.

The 23-year-old, who is studying an arts and law degree at Deakin University, will be among five entrants selected from 17 state finalists when she represents Victoria in a Miss World Australia National Final later this month.

Siobhan joined fellow Geelong models Brit Fowler and Kim Fyfe to wow judges at the state heat earlier this month. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was lovely that there were a few of us,â&#x20AC;? Siobhan said.

But she will be the only young woman from Geelong to compete for the title of Miss World Australia.

Siobhan, who had the support of family and friends on the day of the state final, described the experience of the competition as â&#x20AC;&#x153;surrealâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had a really enjoyable day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beauty pageants can have an interesting reputation but all of the girls there were really nice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were judged on three sections: the introduction, the evening gown, and the question-andanswer section.â&#x20AC;?

Siobhan recycled her year 12 formal dress to wear at the pageant then donated the savings to Variety The Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can imagine the price of dresses. I had a dress sitting around that I had, so I recycled it and used the money to put towards the Variety foundation.â&#x20AC;?

Siobhan, the oldest of four sisters, moved to East Geelong from country New South Wales five years ago to study.

A “citizens’ jury” to decide the structure of Geelong’s next council could be a front to deliver the Andrews Government’s preferred outcome, according to the State Opposition.

The government announced the jury this week despite receiving Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) advice earlier this year on the appropriate structure following months of public consultations.

The 100-member jury would reconsider the number of councillors and ward structure as well as “how” the mayor was elected and whether a deputy was needed, the government announced.

“This is ridiculous,” South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said.

“The VEC has already done the review, the government just needs to make a decision on the deputy. Governments are elected to make decisions, so they should just make one.

“This is the government putting in someone else to make the ultimate decision so afterward the government can turn around and say, ‘Don’t blame us, the citizens jury came up with this’.”

The jury would be either stacked or directed to make decisions the government wanted, Mr Katos claimed.

“What’s the selection process? Will the names be made public?

“Is the Labor Party going through lists of branch members and supporters to decide who will be on the jury?

“What information will be presented to the jury to make its decision? Who will choose the information to be presented?

“This is a genuine concern. This government sacked the CFA board and every water board in the state to install its own people - I don’t have any confidence in anything it does on these sorts of issues.”

The Triple P program is a four week program for parents of children aged up to eight years.

Mr Katos expected the jury to recommend against a directly-elected mayor, which the previous Coalition government introduced to Geelong.

The government’s announcement said only that the jury would consider “how” the mayor was elected, without any mention of a popular vote.

“Labor wants to go back to the bad old days of backroom deals among councillors to choose the mayor,” Mr Katos said.

“That way Labor can control what happens.”

The jury would be a “representative but random” sample of 100 residents, the government said.

All residents would be able to have their say so the jury was “fully informed” of community opinions about council.

State Labor wanted to “know what the people of Geelong think is best for their future council and to help design it,” Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said.

“The last council failed to deliver good governance and a citizens’ jury will help ensure that does not happen again.”

The state-appointed chair of Geelong’s council administrators was “strongly in favour” of the jury.

Dr Kathy Alexander had observed the “success of the concept” when she was City of Melbourne chief.

The system would provide “deeply informed participation in complex electoral decisions”, she said.

“This is an opportunity to hear the opinions from everyday people in all areas of the community, over and above the regular lobby groups.

It also provides an opportunity for community members to learn about democratic and electoral models and their impacts on civic leadership.”

Geelong’s redeveloped library and heritage centre is in line for an international award, City Hall has announced.

The centre was nominated for the Systematic - Public Library of the Year 2016 award, the City said.

Geelong is vying to win the award for the world’s “best new public library” against nominations from Western Australia, Denmark and Chicago.

City Hall’s Brett Luxford said council was “proud of the international recognition”.

“Reaching this global level is an outstanding accomplishment and one the whole city can be proud of,” Mr Luxford said.

“The design elements were the main contributor leading to the nomination, with the IFLA listing the architecture including the use of hexagons and colour palette as outstanding features.

“Sustainability also plays a part in the selec-

tion, with the construction suited to all weather conditions in mind.”

“The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre is one of the most significant buildings in Geelong’s history, providing the community with education, cultural and social benefits.”

Geelong Regional Library Corporation chief Patti Manolis invited the public to utilise the new building.

“If you want to enjoy the library in a quiet way and do some research, you can do that,” said Ms Manolis.

“If you want to come along and join a fun children’s story time you can do that as well.”

“The third floor of the building is dedicated to all things heritage. It’s a beautiful red room where you can do some genealogical research or read about Geelong’s history.”

The Library of the Year winner will be announced on 15 August in Columbus, Ohio.

Stitches in time for local artists

A unique exhibition will showcase a collation of distinctive textile art in Geelong this weekend.

Romancing the Stitch will feature the works of Angela Dower and her embroidery students.

Dower, a self-taught embroidery artist with a catalogue stretching back to her childhood, has taught the art in Geelong for 17 years.

The exhibition would be the “one and only” time she showcased the embroidery work, Dower said.

On display will be embellished pictures, blankets and cushions embroidered with beads, wools, silk threads and ribbons.

“The exhibition is going to have things that no-one has ever seen.

“I’m really proud of what my students and I create. A lot of people don’t understand what embroidery is and what embroidery can do.”

Dower has had images of numerous works published in Inspirations Magazine and taught interstate at an international embroidery expo.

“Some of the participants couldn’t even speak English but a stitch is a stitch and once you show someone how a stitch is done you just go from there,” she said.

Her long-term love of the art has apparently rubbed off on some students.

“Some of my students have been with me for longer than 15 years.

“My oldest student is 87 years old and she absolutely loves it and says it’s what keeps her going.”

Describing the craft as “more than a crossstitch”, Dower was convinced embroidery could have a positive impact on her students’ lives.

“One of my students used to be quite nervous and her hands shook, so someone suggested the classes to her. She’s a different lady now.

“Embroidery picks you up, you forget about your problems and just worry about how the next stitch will turn out.”

Dower has also passed the love of embroidery on to her 10-year-old granddaughter.

“She just loves it,” Dower enthused.

The only challenge to producing her art in Geelong was finding appropriate materials, she said.

“There’s nowhere in Geelong that sells the materials we need. I’m always on the computer looking at new threads and travelling to the other side of the bay.”

Geelong Art Society will host the exhibition with support from Geelong Evening VIEW Club.

Proceeds from the gold-coin entry charge will go to The Smith Family.

“The gallery was absolutely blown away with the work when they saw it, they couldn’t believe it was needle and thread,” Dower said.

Afternoon tea will be available at the exhibition on Saturday and Sunday for $5.

The exhibition will continue at Shearers Arms Gallery, Geelong West, until 22 July. The gallery is open 11am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and 1pm to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Local’s four-year federal term bid

The Federal Government should adopt Victoria’s set four-year terms to avoid “the archaic pre-poll circus”, according to a Geelong MP. Simon Ramsay called for a review of Canberra’s existing three-year maximum terms and backed the adoption of electronic voting to reduce the eight-day federal vote count.

The three-year term failed to give elected governments enough time to introduce their policy without being compromised by campaigning, the Liberal Member for Western Victoria said.

“Governments are now so reactive to the 24hour news cycle that they are always in campaign mode,” Mr Ramsay said.

“This makes it difficult for our leaders to have the courage to set good policy or stand on the strength of their convictions with the mandate the voters of Australia have given them.

“Victoria’s model with a four-year term and perhaps a rotation of senators would give governments time to fulfil their obligations of mandated policies without the interruption of campaign compromises.”

The pre-poll “circus” should be reviewed because voters were using it more as a convenience than a necessity, said Mr Ramsay, whose partner, Sarah Henderson, was returned as Federal Liberal Member for Corangamite last week.

“While I understand that some voters have a legitimate reason for voting early, many abuse the process or don’t realise it’s specifically to be utilised by those who cannot attend a voting centre on Election Day.

“Apart from tying up a huge amount of resources with the excessive three weeks of prepolling, we reach the ridiculous situation where Geelong’s Belmont early voting centre had more than 30 combined supporters and candidates crowding the doorway and besieging voters with how-to-vote cards and pleas for a vote.

“It is no doubt a popular method of voting, given about 30 per cent of voters used postal votes or pre-poll but it is getting out of control.

“With the age of technology, surely voters can have electronic access to how-to-vote cards electronically or available in voting centres without the melee we see every day outside the polling centre.

“If postal and absentee voting was online, a lot of paperwork would be eliminated.

“There would also be merit in using electronic voting to reduce the laborious process of counting votes for more than a week after Election Day. “Even with just 70 per cent of voters showing up on Election Day, lines at polling booths saw many voters, including senior citizens, standing in the wind and rain for more than an hour.

“With the potential for an additional one million Australian voters at the next Federal Election, this will only get worse.

“It is time to look at how we can enhance our democratic right to vote in Australia so our governments can govern without campaigning, our voters can be informed and they can utilise their right to vote using technological efficiency and a more productive use of resources.”

Army ‘in need of more like Jordon’ The Defence Department has highlighted the success of a Lara soldier as it seeks to enlist more residents of the Geelong region.

Lieutenant Jordon Klowss, 23, “officially become a leader” after recently graduating from Royal Military College - Duntroon, the department said.

He was now equipped to lead a platoon or troop of about 30 soldiers after completing 18 months of “extensive military training”.

Duntroon taught him that leadership had more aspects that he initially thought, Mr Klowss said.

“I learned a great deal about what I am capable of under pressure.

“I also learned that to be a leader you must not only be proficient and inspire others but you must also focus on the development of your team.”

Defence described Duntroon as where it developed “world-class officers, teaching them invaluable leadership, management and military skills, and equipping them to achieve results in

challenging situations”.

Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Micah Batt said the training brought out the “best qualities” of Mr Klowss and his classmates.

“It has prepared them to make decisions, think quickly, and motivate others,” Lt-Col Batt said.

“The men and women (who graduated) follow in the footsteps of generations of leaders who’ve had both successful military and civilian careers.

Our past graduates include State Governors, strategists, television personalities, politicians and Heads of Government Departments.

“They will now commence a range of exciting and rewarding jobs as army officers.”

The Defence Department said the army offered more than jobs, with recruits also enjoying “travel opportunities, personal growth and camaraderie".

The department said more information about army careers was available at dencejobs.gov.au/ army.

There’s no doubt that the refinery has been an important contributor to the Geelong and Victorian economy for decades. It supplies more than 50% of Victoria’s fuel needs and injects more than $200m in wages and services into the local region every year. We help Victorians reach their destinations and that’s a great motivator.

I have been in Geelong for just over a year now and, in retrospect, it was a pivotal time to join the community. Our employees and the community were celebrating the lifeline our new owners had given the refinery, while also being confronted with the need to transform from our historical ways of working.

I strongly believe that the refinery can be a sustainable business. That it can support itself and withstand economic factors beyond our control.

It’s inevitable that the Australian dollar and refining margins will rise and fall. Price volatility is a feature of our industry and I don’t try to make predictions! What I do is to encourage my team to think differently and look at how we can improve our competitive

position through performance, production and productivity.

It’s a challenge that the team is embracing with passion and enthusiasm. During the past year we have been preparing for and completing a number of big projects that form a key part of Viva Energy’s $1b investment across Australia, of which roughly a third is being invested in Geelong.

While our core business is to fuel our customers, the economic and

social flow on effects from running a long-term, successful business is undeniable. The most important way for us to contribute to the local community is to keep refining in Geelong. That’s my commitment. The Geelong refinery will continue to play an important role in Australia’s energy future and my focus is to work with employees, customers, suppliers and the local community to secure support for the changes necessary to ensure we’re here well into the future.

REFINERY NEWS

There’s a lot happening at the Geelong Refinery.

Over the five years leading to 2020 we will invest a billion dollars in our Australian operations, of which $350 million is earmarked for the refinery.

A new tank

Maintenance works

$50 million is being spent building a new crude tank that will increase the refinery’s storage capacity by 40%.

We’re committed to running a refinery that is safe, efficient and profitable. Every four to six years $100 million is needed to give the refinery a total overhaul. This massive task is called a Turnaround.

Located on Station Street alongside our other tanks, the new tank will be 21 metres high, 84 metres across and have the capacity to hold 100 million litres of crude oil. That’s equal to 40 Olympic size swimming pools!

Construction has already begun. When complete by the middle of 2017 the new tank will allow us to fully unload ships, increase production and optimise the types of crude oil the refinery processes.

Turnarounds can take 18 months to plan and up to eight weeks to complete. The next one is scheduled for September and October, when over 700 additional workers will swell numbers at the refinery to almost double.

Pipeline upgrade In the coming months a new fuel pumping station on the existing pipeline between Melbourne and the refinery will commence operations. This $23 million investment increases the capacity of our pipeline by 25% - which would take about 100 trucks to deliver every day. That’s traffic the Princess Highway can do without!

These projects will help increase production efficiency, reduce costs and keep the refinery in good health.

Role Model Grants Now Open Each year we invite Geelong’s not-for-profit organisations to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to role models from registered education facilities or nonprofit organisations working in mental illness, substance abuse or breaking the poverty cycle. A total of $50,000 will be available annually across all our heartland communities.

Welcoming bright sparks

Targeting unemployment with Northern Futures Northern Futures is also an important piece of Jigsaw. The Northern Futures partnership will help community members most at risk of becoming, or remaining, jobless in Geelong’s northern suburbs.

The Viva Energy Role Model Scholarship Program will subsidise participants undertaking a Certificate I, II or III training course, including associated expenses such as transport and meals.

Northern Futures CEO, Lou Brazier, said she was delighted Viva Energy was partnering with Northern Futures. “The Viva Energy Role Model Scholarships will allow us to deliver tailored training and education programs to people who face multiple barriers to employment,” she said.

On Friday 20th May, the Refinery hosted a group of girls interested in exploring careers in advanced technologies, design, innovative manufacturing and engineering.

GLaAM (Girls Learning about Advanced Manufacturing) is a program run by the Geelong Regional Vocational Education Council to educate and inform young people about the benefits of a career within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics) field.

The girls’ visit to the refinery was a highlight. One spoke of the value she received from insight into the manufacturing and engineering processes at Viva Energy and how career paths are forged. “Being able to talk to women in these professions and listen to their perspectives on the industry really helped me learn about how I should think of engineering as a career”, she explained.

Doing good deeds Viva Energy is proud to be the first Australian corporation to take part in Good Deeds Day on 10th April. In fact, we extended it to a week and over half of our people participated by doing something good to improve the lives of others.

750 Viva Energy employees contributed over 450 hours giving blood, helping out at headspace, collecting for the Red Cross, making packs for Camp Quality, White Ribbon and the Pyjama Foundation, and collecting food and clothes for organisations such as Sacred Heart Mission, Asylum Seekers and Geelong Food Relief.

In addition to donating their time our people raised $8,000 through fundraising barbecues and morning teas. One particularly intrepid group from the refinery did the Surf Coast Walk and raised over $6,000 for Give Where You Live. Viva Energy will match these donations dollar for dollar.

Letters Lyons good for Geelong

Cruelty myth milked

The unnecessary comments of serial critic Michael J Gamble (Letters, 8 July) about the mayoral duties and the significant contribution of Darryn Lyons to the Geelong region certainly weren’t the views of many of his former constituents.

Mr Lyons lifted the profile of the region in very difficult times and gave us front page in the media and exposure on TV, which no other mayoral candidate ever did.

Now Melbournians know where Geelong is and I am sure we have benefitted as a city and region.

It’s a pity Mr Lyons didn’t run as an independent at the federal election because he would have been of greater benefit to Geelong than its existing MPs, both federal and state.

There was another angle to be taken on Sarah Henderson’s milky photo call (Double Take, 8 July).

All the candidates were asked to choose a drink to hold for the photo shoot. They weren’t asked to drink their choice of beverage.

Ms Henderson chose milk in support of our local dairy industry.

Animal Justice candidate Andy Meddick doesn’t know much about cows if he thinks milking them is cruel. The cows are relieved and satisfied to get rid of the stuff - they come in voluntarily and line up at milking time.

Any of the other candidates, including Mr Meddick, could have drunk the fresh milk but apparently didn’t.

Australia feeling the heat Wow, what century is Tim Saclier (Letters, 6 July) living in?

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere passed 400 parts per million for the first time off the north west coast of WA earlier this year and for a brief period in February/March the average global temperature rise exceeded 1.5C. We have just lost a huge tract of mangroves in the far north of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef has suffered large losses of coral due to warmer sea temperatures.

Ninety-seven per cent of climate scientists agree global warming, as we are now experiencing it, is man-made from the burning of fossil fuels since the industrial revolution.

We urgently need to replace power generation from fossil fuels with power from renewable sources.

We have a climate emergency on our hands and we need our government to take urgent action.

Off the buses In regard to council’s mooted restrictions on cars in the CBD, readers must be aware of recent abysmal changes made to Geelong’s public transport.

If council is to talk about inner-city or any other Geelong resident becoming more reliant on public transport then the scheduling, routing and control of timetabling need to be seriously overhauled.

Geelong’s public transport is absolutely disastrous after the recent changes.

For a start, buses do not go anywhere anyone wants them to go, possibly for two reasons: timetabling and route creation are done in Melbourne by people who never use buses in Geelong or anywhere else; or the local bus companies do not get much of a say in organising the system.

A McHarry’s insider told me the company has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to make the system work, so far to no effect.

Council, State Government and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) have created a public transport disaster in Geelong that does the opposite to reflecting travellers’ needs.

Community consultation before the changes was a joke and this year’s review achieved nothing.

Until little old ladies with their shopping carts reappear on the buses, having disappeared because bus stops are too far away for them to walk to, then our system will remain a bad joke.

Geelong’s system was not broken before the authorities tried to fix it and should probably be restored to what it was, with a binding vote of townsfolk to approve any mooted changes.

Halal meat barbaric Last week Channel 9’s A Current Affair revealed that all packaged goods on supermarket shelves had to be endorsed with the Arabic word ‘halal’ for the benefit of adherents to the Islamic faith.

To alleviate any concerns among non-Muslim consumers, a Muslim doctor explained it was necessary to certify that the food marked halal did not contain traces of pork.

He was careful not to mention the barbaric practice of slaughtering cattle and sheep by cutting the throat in order to produce halal meat.

It can take minutes for the heart to pump all the blood from the body. During this time the animal is conscious and produces stress hormones that are secreted into the body.

If our legislators introduce laws to satisfy the demands of the Muslim minority, so can we, the non-Muslim majority, demand that all meat produced by this barbaric practice is also marked as halal.

We can insist that non-halal meat is available for our use and that it is also marked to this effect.

We refuse to eat halal meat.

Prince among men in purple haze

By Emily Robinson Prince hits will come to life through an Australian reality TV star at North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel this month.

The 2012 winner of Australia’s Got Talent, Andrew De Silva, from ‘90s R&B sensation CDB, will present his Purple Revolution tribute show just months after the death of the international music icon.

De Silva described Purple Revolution as “full on action” from the beginning.

“I’ve been playing Prince’s songs in my set now for nearly 20 years, it’s always been something that the audience relate me to.”

De Silva has previously opened shows for mega stars like Mariah Carey, Boys II men and Shaggy. He recently played the lead role in hit production Let’s Get It On, The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye.

Performing the Marvin Gaye show educated De Silva on paying tribute to beloved artists, he said.

“That show was such a success and got me thinking about doing another one with my band.

“I thought it was about time I did a full Prince show, so I rounded up my musicians who also love his music.”

De Silva and his band performed their first show in Albury just two weeks before Prince’s death.

“About two weeks after the show (opened) I woke up with the news that he had passed away, it was quite surreal.”

De Silva was surprised to recently learn that Prince had actually seen him perform one of his songs.

“In 2006 I sang on The Morning Show with Prince’s drummer. It was only recently that someone told me he actually saw the performance.”

“We’ve put a lot of time into this show. Prince always had the best musicians and the best live shows and we try to capture all of that.

“It’s a full, polished act, which it has to be, otherwise it’s not Prince.”

De Silva said his favourite Prince song changed nightly he always enjoyed performing opening song Let’s Go Crazy.

“Everybody loses their minds. Purple Rain is also always a big one.”

De Silva said his success on Australia’s Got

Talent reminded him that “it’s great to say yes to things in life.”

“Sometimes we can get to a certain age where we get comfortable,“ he reflected.

“That (Australia’s Got Talent) was something I would never dream of really doing but I jumped into it and ever since I’ve been jumping into other things with my eyes shut.”

If the reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem.

The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan.

And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss.

The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts.

The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals.

Owner Flora says although some meals are not

necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders.

A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service – and all at very affordable prices.

Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff.

After four years in busy Shannon Ave, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says.

Sakuratei also has a customer car park for eatin patrons.

The restaurant is open 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 10pm Sundays.

Compared with the Clio RS 200 EDC, the 1.6-litre engine of the limited-edition version has 10 per cent more power and up to 40 Nm of extra torque thanks to new engine mapping, a larger turbo, an intake system designed to minimise back pressure losses and a revised exhaust system to accommodate a Euro 6 catalytic converter.

Added torque is available thanks to a ‘torque boost’ function in fourth and fifth gears.

The vehicle’s EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission has been revised to achieve gear changes that are up to 30 per cent faster, with down changes made more rapid by reduced steering wheel shift paddle travel. There is now greater flexibility in ‘Sport’ mode to combine city and country driving.

Passive safety includes driver and front passenger airbags, plus driver and front passenger head and chest side airbag.

The car features the latest in anti-lock braking with emergency brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency warning lights, which are activated under heavy braking.

Also incorporated are electronic stability control, anti-slip regulation and hill start assist.

Surely the latter isn’t needed by any ‘real’ driver, indeed by anyone driving a car with an automatic transmission?

The test vehicle was finished in a vivid Liquid Yellow, which meant there was no hiding on pulling up to park, the colour attracting some enthusiastic comments.

Stop / start technology is standard on the limited edition vehicle, marking the first time in Australia Renault has offered this feature in combination with the EDC transmission.

Model range HORSES for courses - it’s a throwaway line to explain that particular strengths are suited to certain situations.

The Renault Clio RS 220 Trophy is a case in point. With its added ‘horses’ - power, that is - the special edition is not always at home on the street.

Compared with the Clio RS 200 EDC fivedoor hot hatch, the new limited edition features a more powerful engine with 15 extra kilowatts, up to 40 Newton metres more torque, a sportier chassis and an enhanced EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission.

The Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy - 220 is its horsepower output - comes with new design 18-inch wheels, carbon-look interior trim details and leather sports seats with integrated head rests and is available in a new body colour, Frost White matte finish with exclusive gloss black roof.

Cleverly from a rarity point of view, just 220 220 EDCs are being imported to Australia, priced at $39,990, plus on-road costs.

Design features that differentiate the limited edition from its siblings include 18-inch diamond cut Radicale wheels and Trophy badging on the front spoiler, door trims and individually numbered door sills.

The Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy also sits flatter on the road, the chassis having been lowered and stiffened.

It now squats 20 mm lower at the front and 10 mm lower at the rear unladen. Stiffer dampers have been fitted and are coupled with hydraulic bump stops.

The cabin is kitted out with an embossed leather trim steering wheel, heated leather sports seats with integrated head rests and a gear lever base plate and air-vent inserts finished in satineffect chrome instead of the anodised red in the standard Clio RS 200.

The gloss black centre console sports satin red inserts housing the 7.0-inch touch-screen navigation system, while the dashboard itself is made from prestigious soft-touch carbon with a Renault Sport logo inset.

The RS-badged steering wheel is wrapped in leather with sporty double red stitching. The seats are covered in dark carbon cloth upholstery and the RenaultSport logo on the headrests.

Driving performance information is carried over from the Clio RS 200 EDC with the latest onboard telemetry showing real-time driving data, including torque and power outputs, G-force diagrams, wheel traction figures, efficiency and much more on the 7.0-inch touch-screen.

The system can save driving data on a USB which can be uploaded directly to the driver’s account on the RenaultSport.com website. On the site, stats and laps can be replayed and analysed to

Have your say about health services on the Bellarine Peninsula Bellarine Strategic Area Health Services Plan: Project newsletter #1 The Department of Health and Human Services has engaged consultants Biruu.Health to develop a Strategic Area-based Health Service Plan for the Bellarine Peninsula. The Plan will consider the health status of the Bellarine population, their current and projected health service use and make a series of recommendations about the future delivery of health services in the local community.

The Plan will: • Examine the utilisation, need for, and organisation of primary care, community health, ambulatory acute and subacute services, preventative health care and aged care • Consider the way in which services could be delivered in the future including: community palliative care, outpatient medical treatment, community care and nursing, health promotion, renal dialysis, chemotherapy, community rehabilitation, mental health services, GP clinics and dental services.

• Consider access to aged care services including residential and home-based care.

This work is being undertaken in response to the recommendations made by KPMG in their report Review of Bellarine Community Health 2015.

The consultants will prepare a detailed analysis of available relevant data, consult with current service providers, and engage with local communities across the Peninsula.

During the month of July 2016, representatives from Biruu.Health will host a series of open community meetings to enable members of the local communities to share their experiences, views and preferences for the future of health service delivery in their local communities.

SPORT Scott backing Tomahawk to find form against Freo Geelong coach Chris Scott is “unbelievably confident" power forward Tom Hawkins can overcome his form slump to help the Cats return to the winners’ list. The big man has come under fire for lacklustre returns this season, which have left him averaging less than two goals a match.

He also failed to fire in last week’s loss at home to Sydney, ramping up the pressure for an improved performance this weekend against Fremantle.

Veteran Mackie is set to play his 250th AFL game, while Guthrie is on the verge of 100.

A return to form will have added significance against the Dockers as Andrew Mackie and Cameron Guthrie prepare for milestone games.

Scott stuck by Hawkins during the coach’s media conference this week.

“If you’re looking for big names to go out ... then I think you’ll be disappointed," he said.

Scott deflected some of the blame from Hawkins as critics also circled around Steve Motlop and Mitch Duncan.

“A big part of it is the way we’re playing collectively, that needs to be better and our delivery needs to be better," Scott said.

“I think we can kick the ball to him a little bit more. He’s still a dominant player one-on-one, even when he’s not quite at his best. Then there’s the part that he needs to play as well. We’d like him to be a little more involved in the game. I’m unbelievably confident and I’ve got great faith in Tom." Speedy Motlop accumulated 12 and 10 disposals respectively in the Cats’ losses to St Kilda and the Sydney Swans over the past fortnight.

“The work he’s doing with us strongly suggests that he’s really motivated to improve his game. He wants to be an elite player in the competition and we’re going to do everything we can to support him to get there."

Confident Jurcic finds the net in Warriors’ stirring win

By Josip Zilic Nick Jurcic’s quality finishes inspired North Geelong to its first win in over a month - in its 2-0 victory over Melbourne City last weekend - to put the Warriors back on track.

They now head off to Sunshine on Saturday to try and consolidate the turn in form.

Sunshine Georgies, who have recollected themselves somewhat from their disappointing start to the year, come off a solid performance where they managed a 2-2 draw against league leader Whittlesea.

Their seesawing contest saw them go down twice before clawing back into the contest and then step up to put Whittlesea under great pressure to narrowly miss several opportunities to come away with an upset win.

The Warriors will head into the contest with

renewed confidence after steadying the losses the week before against Werribee then collecting all three points at home to Melbourne City.

On a perfect winter’s day, the Warriors got off to a lightning start when Jurcic was put through on goal on the 4th minute by Kene Eze to beat his man and slot his 15-metre low drive past the keeper into the bottom corner.

With the momentum all theirs, the Warriors went about building opportunities while choking supply to Melbourne City’s midfield, causing several turnovers in dangerous areas.

However it was City that almost scored next, when two shots in two minutes from Marcus Demanche were well saved by Daniel Zilic to keep a clean sheet.

After the break the tempo was building and the tension got to Melbourne City’s Bailey Row, receiving a yellow card for a poor tackle, then his

second yellow seconds later for dissent towards the referee to receive his marching orders.

With the result heading towards a solid 1-0 win, Jurcic stepped up again this time, receiving a well weighted through ball from Matt Thorne - beating his man on the outside of the box and driving towards goal, he slammed his shot past James Delianov to put the result beyond doubt.

Coach Micky Colina was delighted after proceedings.

“Probably the most complete performance of our season to date,” Colina said.

Colina drew on the work the team put in to specifically address their transitional elements of the game which was evident on the weekend.

Fresh wave of salmon biting ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Local surf was again an excellent choice over the past week, with anglers finding worthy numbers of quality Australian salmon.

Casting lures out from the beach on the incoming tide accounted for fish to 2.5kg.

Productive locations included 13th, Bancoora and Jan Juc beaches, with lures of 25g to 30g working well on 5kg leaders.

Clifton Springs tempted anglers with good numbers of squid in 3m to 5m of water.

Whiting were taken a little further out on pippies, although a few moves were sometimes needed to locate good numbers of fish.

Corio Bay remained popular for its protection from strong winds. Anglers fishing land-based at both St Helens and Limeburner’s Point landed reasonable numbers of garfish and pinkies, with the odd larger snapper taken by dedicated types.

Swan Bay provided a mixed bag inside the channel, with whiting, salmon and squid on the chew for anglers fishing at the right time.

Jason Andrew and mates made the most of excellent conditions on Saturday, heading out to 40m straight out from The Rip. Fishing squid baits on the bottom, they boated three gummy shark to 12kg, releasing one, and a surprise legal-size kingfish.

Peri Stavropoulos, Micheal Stavropoulos, Daniel Baden and I ventured down to Port Fairy on Saturday for southern bluefin tuna. After covering some distance on the water, we located tuna willing to take diving hard-body lures in 63m.

After catching a few while trolling we found a school feeding on the surface and caught more on lures such as a Bass Day Bungy Cast and a Sea Iron Pelacus cast into the commotion.

Notably, we observed kingfish follow tuna to the boat on one occasion, along with some much larger tuna.

Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore and Adam Van Der Lugt travelled down south to one of the sea-run trout systems on Monday. Fishing though gale-force wind, Michael banked a well-conditioned brown trout of 54cm on a Rapala Spotted Dog lure.

A little further down west, Tony Hynds cast soft plastics in Lake Yambuk where he banked several bream to 33cm.

Lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri continued challenging anglers with temperamental trout. Trolling deep with downriggers produced a few Bullen Merri Rainbows and Chinook salmon.
