By ANEEKA SIMONIS A FAMILY of five including twin toddlers were run off the road and into an embankment after a long, terrifying road rage ordeal ending in Pakenham.

Police said the drawn-out incident was unprovoked and are urging anyone with information about the offending driver to come forward.

The incident began when the family, a 39-year-old Korumburra man, his partner, their three-year-old daughter and her two-year-old twin siblings, turned onto HealesvilleKooweerup Road from the South Gippsland bypass in Kooweerup and overtook a green station wagon about 5.45am on Wednesday 29 June.

They told police that a white ute had previously overtaken the vehicle without incident.

However the enraged station wagon motorist began tailgating the family car as it drove to Livestock Way, Pakenham.

From there, the station wagon overtook and dramatically pulled in front of the family’s car as they both turned inbound on the Princes Highway.

The victims told police that the reckless driver slammed on his brakes, causing them to take dangerous, evasive action to avoid colliding on the 100km/h stretch of road.

When they tried to change lanes, the station wagon driver swerved in front of them and slammed on their brakes.

Police said the family was eventually run off the road and ended up an embankment while the station wagon drove off.

No one was injured in the road rage attack but the incident is under active police investigation.

Sporting Shelley shining for Sapphires PAKENHAM sporting phenomenon Jaz Shelley has added “world champion” to her already impressive basketball resume. Shelley, 16, played her role superbly for the Australian under-17 women’s basketball team - nicknamed the Sapphires - at the FIBA under-17 world championships this week in Zaragoza, Spain. The Sapphires made light work of Italy in the grand final 62-38 to hoist the trophy. For Shelley, in a burgeoning career already full of amazing accolades, this achievement was the pinnacle. Sapphires coach Shannon Seebohm believes Shelley’s impact in the semi-final was critical to the Australians’ victory and she’s on the path to greatness on and off the court. “She was phenomenal - she’s a really talented player and one with a really bright future ahead,” Seebohm said. “It’s been unbelievable - the fact the girls were able to knock off the US in the semi-final and not the final itself, it’s an amazing achievement and credit to all the players for their time and effort over the years.

The drive to survive

By DAVID NAGEL TWO people had brain explosions in Brisbane on the night of 25 September 2012 - one sits in a prison cell while the other has decided to open up her life to help others.

Glenn Cable is the man behind bars, convicted and jailed for 15 years for the attempted murder of Simone O’Brien after he brutally bashed her with a baseball bat.

Almost four years later Simone was the guest speaker at the Doveton Football Netball Club’s White Ribbon Day luncheon on Saturday.

Cable’s vicious attack on Simone, who he had met online just seven months earlier, played out in front of Simone’s daughters, Gabby and Ash, and left her with horrific injuries.

Her top jaw was smashed. Her nose and right cheekbone were broken, along with both eye sockets and her skull was shattered, so badly, in fact, that her brain was exposed.

One of the first people to help, her neighbour Karen Roper, has since described Simone’s head as “mush” as she held it together until medical help arrived.

Simone now happily shares her horror story under the banner of the White Ribbon Foundation to help raise awareness in a national campaign to stop violence against women.

The story of Simone’s relationship with Cable goes like this.

She had been divorced from her husband Trevor, father of Gabby and Ash, and son Zac, for four years before deciding to go online.

She matched with Cable, the pair agreeing to meet and pretty soon they became an item. But that warm fuzzy feeling changed quickly.

He even lied about his finances.

Simone dumped him, he came back.

He later proposed to her in front of her children.

But the lies and jealousy continued to the point where Simone rang him to tell him their relationship was finished for good.

Within 10 minutes, in front of her own flesh and blood - she was almost

dead in a pool of her own.

“I remember one of my daughters asking ‘will he come to the house, mum,’ and I said ‘no’,” Simone said in front of silenced Doveton and Pakenham players.

“But he came back within five minutes and I was attacked.

“I woke up in ICU a month later, my children had to say goodbye to me twice because the doctors didn’t think I

would survive the first 48 hours.”

The bones in Simone’s left arm, which she had used as a shield, had broken through her skin, she had lost the sight of her right eye, her sense of smell, and couldn’t open her jaw more than two millimetres. She has since had her face rebuilt with titanium and has one more operation to go to complete her current objectives.

“It’s been a four-year recovery and I

still haven’t come to terms with a lot of things just yet,” she told her audience.

“My goal in life is to wake up every day, smile, and be positive and look towards the future. Telling my story is all about raising awareness.

“My main message to you males is that it’s very important that if you have a friend in trouble that you speak up and not let anyone else go through what I have been through.”

Simone has one other goal that is keeping her focussed.

“This year it’s to run a marathon in October and to never give up, to keep fighting each and every day of my life.”

Mother, toddler are shaken by intruders

By ANEEKA SIMONIS A TERRIFIED mum and her 14-month-old son were forced to barricade themselves inside a bedroom in their Pakenham home allegedly stormed by two women charged with assault and aggravated burglary.

Police allege the women, both aged 22 from Cranbourne East, smashed their way into the house after failing to coax the woman to let them in.

An ongoing spat is to blame for the violent intrusion, according to the victim who was, like her son, de-

scribed by police to be “terrified and distraught” in the wake of the alleged incident.

The women are alleged to have begun banging on the door of the victim’s Ashton Place, Pakenham, home about 7pm on Sunday 3 July.

The victim, aged 23, became extremely fearful for herself and her toddler and decided to barricade herself inside the house.

The women continued to bang on the door, wanting to speak to the victim about an ongoing dispute, but on learning she was not going to open the door - the pair allegedly forced

the locked front door open.

It is unclear how the women got into the home, but police who attended the home after the raid confirmed structural damage had been done to an internal plaster wall.

Police said both women allegedly made their way down the hallway leading to the bedroom, attempting to force it open to get to the mum and her child.

During this time, the victim called police.

The victim called out to the women, notifying them police were on

their way, and they fled.

Police said the woman and her 14-month-old son were uninjured during the invasion, but were very shaken up.

An investigation into the matter led to the arrest of two 22-year-old Cranbourne East women.

They were located at their home, interviewed and charged with aggravated burglary, criminal damage, unlawful assault, assault in company.

The pair were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a filing hearing on Friday 8 July.

Doggone! Theft via doggy door BURGLARS are thought to have crawled through a doggy door to get into a house to steal $50.

Police said a 79-year-old man and his wife were sleeping in their Pakenham home in Main Street when the raiders got in between midnight on Saturday 2 July and 8am on Sunday 3 July.

All that was missing when the couple woke up was $50 cash - but the laundry door, which they told police was locked before they went to bed, was found unlocked in the morning.

The victims said they did not recall seeing or hearing anyone in the house but woke to the sound of their dogs barking during the night.

Police are working on the theory that the offenders got in to the house through the doggy door and left via the laundry door.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

100 candles for Joan

By ALANA MITCHELSON A PAKENHAM woman celebrated her 100th birthday last week, receiving a letter from the Queen.

English-born Joan Armitage lost both her mother and father as an infant and spent 18 months in an orphanage before being brought up in the Taylor family in Birmingham.

Artistically minded, Ms Armitage joined amateur drama societies during her adolescence and later studied art at Mosley School of Art, where she met her future husband George.

She joined the Women’s Volunteer Service where her energy and foresight saw her rise through the ranks and become the area supervisor.

During this time, George formed a small printing business and, to add to her workload, she became the company secretary.

Life remained difficult in England and the family made the big decision to immigrate to Australia in 1955.

But 10 years later, tragedy struck the family.

Ms Armitage’s youngest son Anthony was struck by a car and killed a short distance from their home.

His loss greatly affected her and the couple decided to buy a holiday house in Beaconsfield.

This house became a country retreat for her and George to light a fire and paint Australian landscapes.

They loved the area so much that they made the permanent

Roy described his mother as a “great organiser”.

“She was always very active,” he said.

“She would go and talk to all the neighbours and she formed the Friendship Club in Beaconsfield. It became a gossip club.

“And with the help of dad’s printing press, she started the quarterly community newsletter The Beaconsfield Banner that is

still being printed today.

“Even after they both retired, they adopted roles at the Berwick Senior Citizens’ Club.”

Ms Armitage celebrated her 100th birthday at Millhaven Lodge on 28 June with a special visit from Lorna Dudley - her pen pal of 25 years - from England.

Roy presented each guest with one of Ms Armitage’s beautiful artworks as a precious memento of the occasion.

Wired brain is in motion

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS PARKINSON’S disease doesn’t stand still - but neither does Hallam trailblazer Anne Atkin.

Under a warm pink beanie, Ms Atkin is recuperating from a radical operation that wired her brain to an electricity-generating ‘pacemaker’ last month.

Dulled only by local anaesthetics during the six-hour procedure, Ms Atkin was awake as drills and screws bore into her skull.

“It leaves the dentist drill for dead,” a still shaken Ms Atkin said.

Two large frames were screwed on to steady her shaven head and also to help guide the electric wire into both hemispheres of her brain’s subthalamic nucleus.

Ms Atkin still sports two 10-centimetre scars on the left and right of her head. The 55 staples have just been removed.

Meanwhile, the ‘pacemaker’ - which will emit up to 1.7 volts to both brain hemispheres - bulges in front of her left collar-bone.

It is manually recharged once a week.

Ms Atkin said the gruelling procedure has brought her about five years of less medication, less fatigue and more movement until Parkinson’s “rears its ugly head again”.

“You can’t stay the way you are with Parkinson’s.”

Initially after the operation, she felt awful - worse than before the surgery. Nauseous and vomiting, she wondered “what have I done”.

Then the power was activated 30 days later on 30 June. The electric stimulation stopped her neurones “misfiring” and gave more movement to her slowing,

rigidifying limbs.

She has also since halved her dopamine-replacement medication as a result.

“I feel like I’ve defrosted.

“At the moment, I’m terrific but down below there’s Parkinson’s is progressing bit by bit.”

Ms Atkin has just put the finishing touches to her book - with her own cartoon illustrations - exploring life before and after the operation.

Channel 9 News will air her operation in coming weeks. Ms

Atkin is unsure if she really wants to relive that ordeal.

Ms Atkin, who formed the life-changing Painting with Parkinson’s group in Berwick, has just opened her latest joint exhibition in the City of Casey civic centre.

Her landscape pastels are of places she’s photographed, capturing dusk and dawn light and surging oceans.

Creativity is a major way of retaining quality of life, she says.

Ms Atkin is also ambassador for Walk in the Park - the main annual fund-raiser for Parkinson’s research and support in Victoria.

Last year was the first time she couldn’t finish the twokilometre walk in central Melbourne.

Thanks to her operation, she’s confident she’s got the distance covered this coming August.

“The good thing is every cent raised goes to helping people with Parkinson’s.”

Drunk pair’s PSO assault A MAN and woman escaped conviction after pleading guilty to a drunken assault on two Protective Services Officers at Cranbourne railway station.

Harley Michael Langhans had grabbed a PSO in a headlock, causing the officer to become “short of breath” during the assault, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 4 July.

The intoxicated Langhans was sprayed with OC spray three times and struck with a baton in an attempt to subdue him and two other drunk coaccused.

“I was pretty smashed and probably beyond drunk,” he later told police after sobering up in Cranbourne police cells.

Co-accused Nicole Wettenhall also appeared in court for striking a PSO trying to arrest her boyfriend surnamed ‘Morgan’ - another co-accused whose case is yet to be heard.

Wettenhall struck the PSO multiple times to the neck and face with an open hand.

The three co-accused had been drinking together all day before the incident on 21 May. About 6.45pm, Morgan and Langhans repeatedly pressed a train’s emergency intercom button as it approached Merinda Park station.

After being warned by the

station’s PSO about their behaviour, the three were allowed to continue travelling on the train to Cranbourne.

In full view of passengers, Morgan pulled down his pants and exposed his testicles to the PSO - who reported him to colleagues at Cranbourne station.

When approached by two other PSOs at Cranbourne, Morgan refused a direction to stop walking away and pushed aside one of the officers.

Langhans and Wettenhall respectively put on a headlock and struck the officer as he tried to arrest Morgan.

After being OC sprayed, the three drunks got in a fighting stance with the two PSOs. Langhans pushed away the hand of a PSO wielding a baton, and was sprayed a second time.

Wettenhall and Morgan did a runner, helped by a block from Langhans who was sprayed a third time and struck to the leg with a baton.

Police, who had then just arrived at the scene, chased and restrained the two escapees.

Morgan told police to “f*** off her, you f***ing wankers” as Wettenhall was handcuffed.

during the assault.

The other PSO had swelling to his neck and scratches to his face.

After hearing the case summary, magistrate Pauline Spencer asked Langhans if that was all he could remember from the incident.

“Yeah, pretty much,” Langhans said. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done. It won’t happen again.

“I had a few too many. I wasn’t counting ... It was a few.”

Ms Spencer asked Langhans what was a “safe drinking level”.

“I wouldn’t know,” the accused replied.

In a police interview, Wettenhall originally denied assaulting or hindering the PSOs .

She told the court she had been upset after being pushed into a fence and getting pepper sprayed for the first time in her life.

“I ran because I was scared.”

Ms Spencer noted Langhans and Wettenhall had no prior convictions, and Morgan seemed to have been the instigator of the trouble.

The pair received 12-month good behaviour bonds and ordered to donate $800 each to the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

MICHELLE from the City of Casey makes a very valid argument about the poor standard of reporting in the Berwick News recently (Some ‘Career’, 30 June).

I am amazed at the unbalanced reporting

by Cam Lucadou-Wells on Casey council’s special budget meeting (Magician No Match For Mayor’s Power, Tuesday 28 June).

This was a superficial report on a serious meeting and your reporter chose to completely ignore my submission.

Why? No mention was made of some very important facts.

1. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz attempted to control questions and argument about the 2016/17 budget plan by stating “no comments or references” were allowed to be made about council’s budget and the recent Essential Services Commission report which found Casey had the financial capacity to operate within the 2.5 per cent cap and did not need another 0.97 per cent from ratepayers.

2. My submission to council pointed out that Casey council doesn’t have a revenue problem, we have a management problem because our CEO Mike Tyler is more like a recluse than a leader.

Many thousands of dollars has been wasted on outsourcing work to consultants which could have been completed by the CEO and his department.

Ratepayers’ money was also used irresponsibly to complete a failed rate’s cap variation application to the commission.

Why did Mike Tyler approve a $250,000 payment to senior staff when other councils only paid between $10,000 and $40,000 for the same application?

3. The problem I have with Casey’s budget is the business model concealed behind the data. Cr Sam Aziz and CEO Mike Tyler appear to be influenced by the Wall Street business model that council needs to exploit its ratepayers for revenue.

4. There are alternatives to exploiting ratepayers and this includes using resources to achieve productivity offsets, developing ideas and becoming a more innovative council.

5. But to achieve this we need to move away from an anachronistic model of leadership to a more modern parallel, progressive council.

This cannot be achieved under the existing CEO Mike Tyler, Mayor Sam Aziz, and a local media which has failed ratepayers again by not providing a balanced coverage of this year’s special budget meeting. Cr Sam Aziz should stand down and Mike Tyler sacked by council.

Vote for deceit WHY does Anthony Byrne, at great expense, send a letter to all residents in his electorate with blatant lies regarding Medicare when I cannot receive a response from emails sent back in May regarding my concerns regarding age care facilities. FORTY American editors and journalists visited the News’ Pakenham head office on Friday 1 July.

The visitors were delegates at an International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors conference held at the University of Melbourne.

Following the two-day conference, the delegates and their partners took a road trip to East Gippsland stopping for morning tea at Star News Group’s headquarters on the way.

The visitors toured the News building meeting reporters, advertising representatives and production staff.

Regional editor Garry Howe gave them a presentation on the history of the company and its publications.

After re-boarding their bus, the delegates then stopped at the Warragul Gazette, a robotic dairy near Sale and a vegetable farm at Lindenow.

On Saturday they enjoyed a pie and beer at the local footy at Wy Yung.

A MAGISTRATE couldn’t quite believe his ears.

In a family violence hearing, the accused requested a couple of things back from the alleged victim. One was his mobile phone, the other was his dog kennel.

At the latter, the magistrate at first asked the lawyer to repeat themselves. Then there was the problem of delivering the kennel given the accused wasn’t allowed near the victim or her house.

The lawyer suggested the accused picked up the kennel while accompanied by police.

ANOTHER accused at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed a little too full of beans.

As he sat in the dock, he smiled and winked regularly at his child while his lawyer argued his case.

Then when asked to stand, the man starting pacing on the spot - as the multitude of conditions of a full intervention order were read out.

The incident occurred at 2.30pm just before the Cardinia Primary School turn off.

The car came out of a side street and decided not to stop causing the journalist to veer off the road to avoid an accident.

A POLISH senior citizen club in Doveton has shut down after its modest community group grant was not renewed.

The Polish Forty Plus Club, which has 15 members aged up to 92 years, was established, thanks to a Home and Community Care state grant in 2015’16.

A club petition to Casey council said the club was a “ray of light at the end of a dark lifetime” for one of Melbourne’s densest enclaves of residents of Polish background.

A Polish Community Council of Victoria team leader ‘Joanna’ said that as of 1 July, the funding ran out and the lights went out on the group.

The HACC funding is provided by the State Government and administered by Casey council.

‘Joanna’ said Casey had helped create a vital social outlet for the group members, many who don’t speak English and are otherwise isolated.

Casey provided a hall as well as a community bus to pick up group members.

The group met for exercise, games, crosswords, singing, art, crafts, outings and talks, as well as healthy meals provided by the PCCV. The club boasts that it is one of the most active of the Polish planned activity groups in the region.

“Casey council did an amazing job. They were fantastic to us,” ‘Joanna’ said.

Member Maria Trofimiuk said she found the fortnightly group “so relaxing, rewarding and rejuvenating”.

WHO knows how Doveton cyclist Michael Lynch is still alive?

The 68-year-old grandfather of 13 partly attributes his survival to his battered $400 bike helmet and - half-jokingly - his “solid” build.

He has little memory of the crash on 28 January 2015 that led to an extended stint in hospital and months of rehabilitation.

From what bystanders told him, he had been riding straight ahead on Princes Highway, nearing the Jones Street intersection, when he was struck by a Hi-Ace van towing a trailer turning left .

Mr Lynch went down and the trailer’s wheels went over him. He was able to give someone his wife’s phone number before he was hospitalised in The Alfred’s trauma section for five days.

He suffered a closed head injury with brain contusions, as well as fractured ribs and three broken vertebrae.

“I think I could have been killed. Every week you pick up a paper and read about a rider killed ... ” The driver was charged and fined $1000, according to Mr Lynch. The collision was part of a real annus horribilis.

Just before Mr Lynch’s crash, his granddaughter died at birth, he had his prostate removed due to cancer and his brother passed away.

Afterwards, his heart took a “turn” requiring a quadruple by-pass.

Every night, he takes antidepressants to help him sleep, to stop him thinking “stupid things”. The coccyx still “kills me”, stopping him from sitting on a wooden chair for long.

Then there’s the brand-new watch smashed in the crash. Mr Lynch says his wife always told him not to wear it while riding.

Mr Lynch had been riding a bike since he was 15. He took it up with renewed gusto when he retired from truck driving.

He joined Southern Masters riding group and made a lot of mates. But there was also a lot

of vitriol and road rage - not to mention bottles and spit - directed at him by drivers.

“I don’t think you’ll ever get people to like cyclists. There’s so many people who hate cyclists.”

Mr Lynch is back on the bike, riding in the Masters lower grades, but keeping it to the track.

He says there’s also too many long gaps in the off-road bike paths.

“It’s hard to ride on the road.

“Here’s the government trying to encourage people to ride to work. What if you live in Dandenong? How do you ride to Melbourne?”

“Collaborative research between the health, transport, and planning sectors has considerable potential to promote active travel further and to broaden the base for cardio-metabolic disease prevention initiatives.”

The study assessed the driving habits of 2800 adults from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study against health measures including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose and a range of cardio-metabolic risk factors.

CASEY Mayor Sam Aziz has warned residents of the health risks involved with driving for long periods after new research revealed that those who drive more than one hour each day are more susceptible to gaining weight.

He said this study was a reminder of the need for a dedicated national infrastructure fund to ease congestion on Casey’s major thoroughfares so residents arrive at their destinations sooner and spend less time in their cars.

The Australian Catholic University (ACU) study showed that those who drive one hour or more each day, on average, gain more than two kilograms in weight and are 1.5cm wider around the waist.

Those who spent 15 minutes or less in their cars did not show significant signs of weight gain or related health risks.

Men were also found to be more likely than women to put on weight due to prolonged time spent behind the wheel.

Cr Aziz said Casey had one of the highest levels of car ownership in the state.

“Car travel accounts for over 88 per cent of journeys to work,” he said.

“Time spent commuting means residents have limited time to prepare quality meals and exercise.

Weapons find

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CRANBOURNE tattooist whose home bungalow contained drugs, two sawn-off longarms, several machetes and a dagger has been put on a twoyear community corrections order.

Shane Hart, 24, was charged with trafficking after police seized 36.49 grams of ice as well as cannabis and 3.6 grams of amphetamines during the backyard bungalow raid on 2 October, a court heard.

Also seized were a sawnoff Winchester rifle, a sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun, cash and drug paraphernalia, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 4 July.

Hart, who pleaded guilty to all charges, told police at the time the drugs were for personal use and that he collected knives.

Defence lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson told the court Hart had been originally referred to the Dandenong Drug Court over the offences.

That course of action was aborted due to Hart attempting suicide with a gun in February. “He heard voices to shoot himself,� Ms Garde-Wilson said.

As a result, Hart was hospitalised for a month and had recently been discharged from rehabilitation, Ms Garde-Wilson said.

Hart, who had a “long-standing� schizoid disorder, was exposed to drugs and “extremely bad peer influences� at a tattoo parlour workplace.

He later worked as a fullyqualified tattooist at home, where the police raids took place, his lawyer said.

The court was told Hart was receiving drug and mentalhealth treatment, had moved in with family and started parttime work.

He had been drug-free since February, disposed of his phone and closed his Facebook account, the court was told. “All of the people who knew him think he’s dead,� Ms Garde-Wilson said.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said the combination of a “significant� quantity of drugs and weapons were of “great concern�.

Ms Spencer said she would normally order a “lengthy term of imprisonment� but for Hart’s young age, and lack of relevant priors. “You’ve never been in trouble with this sort of thing before. You got in trouble quickly and deeply.�

She said Hart may have been suffering an untreated mental illness at the time of the incident.

The suicide attempt may have been a “circuit-breaker� for Hart, who showed “strong indicators of a positive rehabilitation�.

Ms Spencer ordered the cash to be forfeited to the State, and the drugs and weapons destroyed.

Teen netted in carjacking crackdown warrant in James Wyman Place on Thursday 30 June.

The teen was charged with armed robbery, intentionally and recklessly causing injury, assault-related offences and theft of and from a motor car.

STREETS in the south-east could soon be under 24/7 police surveillance as residents with CCTV systems are enlisted to be the eyes and ears of criminal investigators working to drive down the rising rate of aggravated home burglaries and carjackings.

Residents in Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong are being encouraged to sign up to a CCTV database, as police ramp up their investigative efforts following a spate of attacks on homes in recent months.

Proactive Policing Unit Sergeant Brad Johnstone said the database would be invaluable to investigation, particularly as they work to quash an emerging opportunistic crime trend, where offenders try a series of homes and cars until they find their target.

“In our area, the intelligence tells us that in some cases offenders walk the street and attempt multiple houses or garages before they find one that is unlocked or easily accessible,” he said.

Recent figures revealed a rise in Casey’s criminal activity of more than 15 per cent on a per capita basis in the past year.

But more concerning is the increasingly violent attacks carried out by home invaders, such as the emerging Apex youthgang, known to use weapons on people caught off guard in their own homes.

Police want residents to provide them access to private CCTV system to help solve street crime.

New or under-development housing estates are working out to be a hard hit area in the south-east division, according to Leading Senior Constable Frank Bailey.

He said investigative and civilian forces were already uniting on the quest to solve and deter crimes, with a number of residents already signing up for CCTV access to police in the few days it has been since the initiative was launched.

Home surveillance installations are becoming a growing trend in the region.

Leading Sen Const Bailey said home invasion victims often went on to install security, including CCTV, alarms and sensor systems, at their home after their brush with intruders, and the same security precautions were often taken on board by surrounding neighbours.

Sweet winter treats greeted DIETS were swept aside for serious sweet-toothed sampling at Winter Treats in Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick on 2 July.

More than 24 speciality stalls gave away free desserts and snacks under a big marquee as part of the day's gourmet activities.

Among the decadent offerings were cupcakes from Cranbournebased Sargent Sweets, and Christmas cake slices from the Lioness Club of Berwick.

There were also demonstrations in making bread and chocolate, and decorating cookies.

Relay team scouting for new participants MONEY means life for these fundraising trailblazers at the Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life.

Last year’s event raised more than $67,000 for research and prevention programs of Cancer Council Victoria, and the team hoped to hit $105,000 this year.

Committee member Brooke Walford said the local relay events had raised $302,376 in four years, but the team had a more imminent goal in sight.

“We’re currently looking for passionate residents to gather their

friends to participate in the Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life,” Ms Walford said.

“We’re also looking for local businesses to provide support through sponsorships or donations.”

The next relay will take place at the Casey Field’s Athletics Track over the weekend of Saturday 5 November from 4pm.

The Cranbourne-Narre Warren event will highlight special ceremonies, including an honorary lap for survivors and carers.

Wastech’s Danish honour Business magazine continues to Grow

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HALLAM-BASED Wastech Engineering has added an international award to its rapidly filling trophy collection. On 27 June, the recycling manufacturers were presented by Danish Ambassador Borge Petersen and Danish deputy consul general Rikke Scheel Gamborg with the lofty His Royal Highness Prince Heinrik’s Medal of Honour.

The award recognises Wastech’s service to trade relations between Denmark and Australia.

The ties had been forged between Wastech director Neil Bone and Danish-based company Bramidan chief executive Henrik Dueholm Madsen during a chat at an expo in Melbourne in 2001.

Since then Wastech has distributed a growing number of Bramidan’s cardboard balers in a variety of sizes to supermarkets and other businesses in Australia. In that time, both partners have prospered.

Mr Madsen returned to Australia for a two-day visit especially for the formal medal presentation.

He told Star News he had chosen to partner Wastech 15 years ago on “pure stomach feeling”.

“We have grown together. Bramidan is now four to five times bigger.

“We have a very big market share in Australia, and (Wastech) are one of our best distributors globally.”

Mr Bone said at the time of the first encounter Wastech was in its infancy.

“We started with nothing. We were starting behind the pack.”

Now Wastech turns over $45 million annually - more than seven times the figure in 2001.

Mr Bone said Wastech had compared notes with its Danish partner on such things as quality standards and service networks.

Ambassador Petersen said the prestigious medal recognised a company that had achieved excellence in promoting Danish products over a number of years.

“It’s something one can be proud of,” Ambassador Petersen said.

How to experience the world IS THERE a world without borders? There would be, according to famous Scandinavian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl who championed the ethos of ‘experiencing your world’.

The famous explorer famously embarked on his 8000km Kon-Tiki expedition on a hand-built raft across the Pacific Ocean and showed that vast distances did not hinder ancient people from reaching faraway lands and cultures.

When it comes to bridging ‘different worlds’, Victoria based Southern Cross Cultural Exchange strongly believes that “a whole family, not just the individual, gains from the action of one youth living half a world away,” said Rob Lindsay, national director of Australia’s established pioneer in international educational student exchange.

Can anyone between the age of 15 and 18 venture from the comforts and known environment of his or her hometown to a vastly different part of the world while they are still in high school?

The answer from Rob is that they can.

The educational exchange organisation has successfully linked curious, motivated and adaptable high schools students who not only had a sense of geographical adventure but also a huge interest in knowing how their counterparts and families in different cultures live and learn.

This ‘switch’ of cultures happens not just to the exchange student but the host family which voluntarily opens its home and welcomes the student to live with them for a while during their program which includes attending a local high school close to the family.

Rob said July’s intake of students have all been placed with wonderful families, all of whom who are helping to making the dream of the exchange student they host come true.

For other families interested in the idea, there is still an opportunity to host a student from midAugust who is arriving later from France, Sweden, Finland or Germany.

Exchange students will soon swap the vistas of Scandinavia for the Australian coast and bush as part of a high school exchange program organised by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. 156301 “Our wonderful volunteer host families all come in different shapes and sizes - families often have similar-aged teenagers of their own,” he said.

“As well, we have families with younger children who look forward to having a ‘big brother’ or ‘sister’ from overseas.

“We also have to empty-nesters who are keen to host a responsible and adaptable teenager from a different country.”

Voluntary host participants are well-assisted

by SCCE. The not-for-profit organisation looks after students’ school enrolments, travel and insurance arrangements and offers guidance and support.

Annie the musical

South-east band, Wishbone need a new frontman. The rock band already has 30 covers under their belt from bands such as Grinspoon, Powderfinger, Screaming Jets, Matchbox20 and Presidents of the USA. They rehearse 2-3 weeks a month on Monday nights at Pony music in Hallam. They are of the 30-plus age bracket and are looking for a confident singer, whose voice can range from modern rock to mainstream metal.

A CONVERSATION with former Collingwood premiership skipper Nick Maxwell has helped to spark Pakenham teenager Jai Rout on his footy journey.

Rout, a lifelong Pies fan, had a nervous introduction to one of his childhood idols but the advice he received about leadership, maturity and being able to stand up when it matters has sparked him in a particularly strong month of TAC Cup football with the Gippsland Power.

The 18-year-old who now calls Cora Lynn his home club was dropped early this season at the Power but instead of letting the disappointment weigh him down, he returned to the Cobras and worked on the things he needed to win back his place in the side under Maxwell’s former premiership-winning Pies team mate Leigh Brown.

Rout credits the likes of Cobras coach David Main, gun midfielder Ricky Clark, and forward pair Anthony Giuliano and Ryan Gillis with helping boost his football development - in everything from mindset to forward pressure to displaying elite footskills in key stages of games.

And since re-entering the Power’s TAC Cup side in early June against the North Ballarat Rebels, Rout has been in the best every week - including a five-goal haul against the Western Jets at Morwell recently.

“The first half of my season wasn’t that great - they told me to go back and work on my pressure and tackling,” Rout said.

“I went back to Cora Lynn and worked really hard for four weeks and won my opportunity back.”

That happened in no small part due to the encouragement and coaching from Main who

helped him work on the exact areas of his game he needed to lift.

Now things like defensive pressure inside forward 50 are becoming strengths.

Rout models his style of game on someone like a Cyril Rioli, who doesn’t need a huge amount of possession to have an impact.

That describes Rout perfectly. Against the Jets he kicked his five goals from just 11 kicks.

“I want to make a career out of footy, but if I don’t I want to work my way into a VFL side and play as high a standard as possible,” Rout said of his game moving forward.

For now, he’s trying everything possible to improve his game at the Power, and his new home club Cora Lynn has embraced him with open arms.

Now that he’s got that spark, look out any small defender who tries to stop him.

Eagles bringing Wickers down

By DAVID NAGEL SCRATCH the idea that the South East Football Netball League is a one-horse race after Cranbourne gave the previously unbeaten reigning premier Berwick a 53-point lesson at Casey Fields on Saturday.

A vintage nine-goal performance from superstar full-forward Marc Holt was the individual highlight as the Eagles out-pressured, outmuscled, and totally out-played the 2015 champions in every facet of the game.

The Eagles led by three goals at half time but put the foot down in the second half, booting 11 goals to four to run out convincing winners.

Eagles coach Simon Goosey said his side would gain plenty from the win that reversed a two-game losing streak against the Wickers, including a loss in last year’s grand final.

“We’ll gain some belief that if we prepare ourselves properly we can match it with any team in the competition,” Goosey said.

“Premierships aren’t won in June or July and we’ve still got a long way to go, so we’re not getting

ahead of ourselves, but I was really proud of the effort and the way the boys prepared themselves for the challenge.”

Cranbourne’s pressure was enormous, forcing the normally freeflowing Wickers to play stop-start footy. Holt was unstoppable, having three opponents on the day, while midfielders Shaun Marusic, Max Gearon, Mat Fletcher and Ryan Jones had the ball on a string.

Mitch Johnson kicked three for the Wickers who had Ben Kearns try his best to lift his side from half forward. Michael Riseley held his own against Holt in a loss that will do the Wickers' premiership hopes no harm at all.

Doveton is all but guaranteed a finals berth after an emotion-charged 48-point victory over Pakenham at Robinson Oval.

The Doves farewelled one of their great characters and supporters, John ‘Meatloaf’ Calthorpe, hosted a White Ribbon Day Luncheon, and also celebrated the 200th game of current day president Aaron Henwood.

'Pies face streamrolling Eagles

By DAVID NAGEL REIGNING champion Narre Warren will face its biggest challenger on Saturday when Beaconsfield heads to Kalora Park for a round-12 South East Football Netball League showdown.

The Magpies are showing signs of being equally as dominant as last year, while the Eagles will hit the court after a six-game winning streak.

Both teams have brilliant midcourts. The Magpies have skipper Leigh Taylor steering the ship with Kaela Hughes the Beaconsfield trump card.

The Magpies warmed up for this week’s blockbuster clash with a dominant 67-30 victory over Tooradin at Westernport.

The unbeaten Magpies had their biggest scare of the season against the Seagulls back in round four, winning 44-43, but were back to their brilliant best on the weekend.

Regular playmakers like Kara Hargrave, Chloe Phillips, Erin Clark and Gabby Dwyer were missing, making the Magpies win all the more impressive.

Tayla Shannon (GA) and Mel Pansow (GS) combined beautifully for four quarters, while Demi Brettoner was the star performer of the day at wing attack. Ebony Dolan (GD) and Mary McGindle (GK) tried hard to plug the holes for the Seagulls.

Cranbourne made it back-to-back wins with a 47-31 victory over Berwick at Casey Fields.

The Eagles lost their first three games of the season, but have since won four of their last seven, with a draw against Doveton showing that Donna Wilson and her girls have what it takes to match it with the better teams in the competition.

“We’re getting better, we’re getting girls back from injury, they’re enjoying their netball and every-

thing’s pretty positive right now,” Donna said.

“The girls are starting to believe that they can win and once they have that belief they can achieve anything.”

The first quarter was tight, Cranbourne edging away by three before taking control of the match in the second quarter. The Eagles fired in a 13-7 second term, Ash Honan (C), Steph Ryan (WD) and Nat Sparks (WA) on top through the middle, with Tegan Stahl (GS) and Alanah Hardy (GA) cashing in up front.

Tara Cecil (GD) and under-17 Hailey Galpin (GK) complimented that group with sound play at the defensive end of the court. Berwick’s goalers Emma Clarke (GS) and Nicole Westmorland (GA) battled hard against that duo in the attacking ring.

Hampton Park bounced back to the winners list with a comfortable 51-41 victory over ROC at Starling Road.

This was the first time the Redbacks had returned to the scene of last year’s grand final - and they left on much happier terms this time around.

The Redbacks took their time to get warm, but a 13-5 second quarter put the issue beyond doubt.

Monalisa Groom (C) continues to flourish through the midcourt, while Brooke Kiely (GS) had a great day out with 40 goals for the winners.

Lauren Hargreaves (GS) and Sophie Tracey (WD) had great second halves for the Kangaroos.

And finally, Doveton has slotted nicely into third place on the ladder after a 27-goal, 65-38, triumph over Pakenham.

The home side was at its freescoring best, rattling on 18 goals to 10 in an explosive second term.
