Saturday’s election saw the LNP both maintain and regain its stronghold in the Noosa Shire, with both the seats of Wide Bay and Fairfax going to LNP candidates.

While it is still unclear who will

be Prime Minister, both local LNP candidates Llew O’Brien for Wide Bay and Ted O’Brien for Fairfax have won their seats.

Llew O’Brien held on to the traditionally conservative Wide Bay seat previously vacated by former Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, while Ted O’Brien won the seat formerly occupied by Clive Palmer.

Mr Llew O’Brien said he was

happy with the result locally, but would eagerly await the national results so he can get started on LNP pre-election promises such as the $2 million road upgrade for the link between Noosa and Rainbow Beach.

“The key areas I will focus on immediately are the $2 million in funding for the link road. That will be great for the community and tourism in Noosa,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said he would also get busy boosting local employment rates in the Wide Bay Burnett region through the Coalition’s $20 million job package that will help local businesses expand and offer new jobs.

“I want to get employment up,” he said.

“I want to do my very best to reduce unemployment. I will take this on as an advocate. I’m here to

represent the people.”

Labor candidate Lucy Stanton has conceded the seat and said after “forcing us to a double dissolution in the promise of stability, (Prime Minister Malcolm) Turnbull has delivered chaos.”

“I would love to thank my campaign team who worked tirelessly on a shoestring budget,” she said.

Songwriter’s new creation

By MEGAN OGLE WELL-KNOWN Australian singer, songwriter and actor Wes Carr has left the hustle and bustle of the big smoke behind as he settles for a more simple life in the coastal town of Coolum.

Ready for a sea change, Carr, wife Charlotte and son Willow relocated to Coolum from Sydney late last year and haven’t looked back since.

“We love it up here. I’ve been up here a few times on tour, I love the place, and I have a few mates up here, too,” Carr said.

Wes said the move to the Sunshine Coast was spontaneous but was the right thing for his young family.

“For a long time, creatively and everything, I’ve felt Sydney wasn’t really home. After a lot of travelling and touring, I felt like I didn’t belong there anymore,” Carr said.

“Especially when you have a little man, you sort of become more insular and simpler. Being in the middle of Sydney it was hectic, you just feel like you’re going crazy.

“It’s just been the weirdest thing, this whole move has been so creative and everything has been such an advan-

tage for our lives and enriched our lives so much it’s like that old slingshot, you know, Sydney was like the pull back until it got so intense, something had to give and we just sort of blew.”

It was fate for the family to plant its roots in the relaxed coastal town as Carr wrote his latest smash hit from his home studio, Hummingbird Studios, inspired by the feelings of finally having found his “home”.

“It’s funny because Home was originally written for a TV commercial, for Kenwood, which my friends were in,” Carr said.

“My friend Gemma Lee, who was a director, rang me up and said she needed a song in an hour.

“I said OK and I voicememo’d this song, and it was Home, and it all just came out within the hour.

“I was pretty much being surrounded by the topic of the song in my life anyway so it all fell out pretty quickly, all the best ones do, that’s what I’ve found.”

The Kenwood advertisement was broadcast during popular TV timeslots where Home’s catchy tune and relatable lyrics soon caught the attention of many viewers.

“Before I knew it there were radio campaigns trying to find out who sings the song on the Kenwood ad.

“There were people trying to Shazam the song but they couldn’t because it wasn’t released yet, so sort of by popular demand I had to get it together and release it,” Carr said.

“I had a lot of major labels contact me and try to sign me but I said no, I wanted to do this independently.”

The family may be enjoying a slower paced lifestyle but both Carr and Charlotte’s professional lives are as busy as ever.

With the benefit of a home studio, Charlotte, a food and health blogger and co-author of Bubba Yum Yum: The Paleo Way for New Mums, Babies and Toddlers with celebrity chef Pete Evans and nutritionist Helen Padarin, has continued work as a voiceover artist and is currently working on a new cookbook in between beach dates with Willow.

Carr has also been busy having released his latest single and setting up Spirit Songs, an online creative coaching course and preparing for his role in Australian concert drama Rolling Thunder Vietnam later this month.

The talented family of Wes Carr, Charlotte and Willow now calls Coolum home.

Postal votes are still being counted by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and a final result may not be known for another week, or even a month, but experts say it is unlikely voters will be called back to the polls.

Gymnastics play payday THE Noosa Gymnastics Club has received a staggering cash injection thanks to a State Government grant.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said he was pleased to announce the club was receiving $512,567 in funding as part of the Get Playing Plus grant program.

Club president Barry Elphinston said the grant funding meant the club could now draw up plans and call tenders for construction.

“This grant, which we will match with club savings, will enable a doubling of the present training space with installation of more equipment and will allow us to extend our training programs,” Mr Elphinston said.

“The grant, sourced from

gaming tax revenues, works to make the impossible possible for invaluable not for profit groups and organisations such as Noosa Gymnastics, who contribute to the well-being of our community, in particular our young people who over the years have turned to their devices for fun and friendship instead of physical activities,” Mr Elmes said.

According to Gymnastics Queensland, only 44 per cent of Queensland children aged between two and 16 years meet the national guidelines for physical activity.

Mr Elmes said it makes sense for governments to invest in groups such as Noosa Gymnastics to help them deliver programs that teach children healthy habits to take

with them through all stages of life. If you are part of a community group and could benefit from funding, Noosa Council grants officer Kim Cummins says help is at hand with free advice available for community members.

“The community development team is happy to explain the range of grants available from council as well as state and federal governments. We can also provide advice on writing grant applications,” Ms Cummins said.

Ms Cummins says other groups too could be eligible for funding to cover all sorts of initiatives including construction and cultural development projects.

Festival deadline extended THE inaugural Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) has received its 150th short film submission – and more are rolling in.

According to the festival’s head curator Arnold Kopff, the number of entries for the short film competitions has exceeded all expectations and the standard is “exceptional”.

Entries have been received from 25 countries around the globe as well as most Australian states.

Entries include the full scope of genres – dramas, comedies, black comedies, horror, political satires, documentaries, hand drawn animations and music videos with original compositions.

The original deadline closed on Tuesday 5 July, however the final deadline has been extended to Tuesday 2 August.

Mr Kopff said while the deadline extension may increase the challenge for him and his team of 12 curators, it was aimed at enhancing the range of official selections and event screenings.

“We want to ensure that NIFF audiences will be thoroughly entertained and engaged by an eclectic mix of film subjects and styles,” he said.

This week the team of curators began the task of critiquing the short film entries.

Each film will be separately reviewed by each curator and films with the highest number of recommendations will be submitted to the judging panel.

The inaugural Noosa International Film Festival is set to kick off on Thursday 3 November and will run over four days in Noosa.

Hardman’s trigger for life

By JOLENE OGLE AFTER more than 110 days on the road, veteran Royce Hardman and his dog Trigger have made their way to the Sunshine Coast to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Royce and his American Staffy Trigger, who set off from Cairns in an ex-Army Land Rover, are roaming the country to encourage people suffering from PTSD to talk about the condition.

Royce developed PTSD after serving with the Australian Army in Afghanistan in 2009. After being discharged, Royce said he struggled with alcoholism, anger, depression, isolation and attempted suicide until he met his best mate, Trigger.

Credited with saving his life, Trigger has been by the veteran’s side ever since, and is now on the road to help Royce share his story.

Royce and Trigger started their trek in September 2015 when they walked 800km from Rockingham, Western Australia, but soon took up the ex-Army truck at the start of 2016 to continue their journey.

“The Land Rover is perfect,” Royce said. “Just like me, its 27 years old, it’s not pretty to look and it’s prone to occasional break-downs, but it’s tough and unstoppable.”

Royce and Trigger arrived in Mooloolaba on Monday 4 July and spent their time talking on the radio and appearing in local media to share the message, before hitting the road again.

Since first heading off on his once-in-a-lifetime journey, Royce has received hundreds

of messages and emails of support and from people sharing their experiences with PTSD. “I’ve been staggered by the amazing support and generosity I’ve received from all people around Australia,” he said.

“Tens of thousands of Australians and their families are affected by PTSD and they have come forward to share their stories with me, follow my journey and provide support to others who are also suffering.”

With PTSD affecting at least 10 per cent of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, Royce said it was important to encourage PTSD sufferers to seek professional counselling.

“I encourage them to share their stories on the Trigger’s Big Trek Facebook page as a way of giving hope, encouragement and support to others who are struggling to cope with PTSD,” Royce said.

Royce has received hundreds of messages from current and former ADF personnel, families of returned service personnel, widows and children of veterans who have lost their lives since returning from overseas deployment.

Royce said the messages of support and the encouragement he had received provided all the motivation he needed to continue this self-funded trek around Australia.

“ADF and the Australian Government have a moral obligation and duty of care to help these men and women recover from their wounds, whether those wounds are mental or physical, and if possible, give them an opportunity to manage their condition while continuing to serve their country,” Veteran Royce Hardman and his dog Trigger on the Sunshine Coast. he said.

On Thursday 30 June, a local man accepted drug diversion after drugs were seized from the granny flat where he lives.

At another local address, Noosa Head’s police seized over 2 grams of methylamphetamine when they attended the home to search for a stolen car, motorcycle, car keys and a registration plate. Police found the stolen car and then the offender, who was hiding in

Drug driving A NOOSAVILLE man has been charged with drug driving and driving an unregistered vehicle after he was found hiding in the bush by local police.

Police will allege the male driver was seen driving along Beckmans Road, Noosaville, where he did a u-turn and his car was later found in a carpark on Gateway Drive, Noosaville.

According to the police report, the male driver was then seen by local police to be “crouched down in the garden”.

A witness approached the police and said they allegedly saw the offender throw something in the garden.

Police will allege a camera case containing drugs was found at the scene.

The man has since been released on bail and is due to face charges for drug driving and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Offenders opt for drug diversion program LOCAL police have raided a number of properties throughout the Noosa Shire, seizing drugs, utensils and a stolen car.

The six raids were carried out over Wednesday 29 June and Thursday 30 June, and included a number of local addresses in Cootharaba, Noosa Heads and Sunrise Beach.

Officer-in-Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the raids “proved quite successful”, with a number of

Offenders risk a $73 fine and two demerit points for not indicating when entering or leaving a roundabout and a $97 fine and three demerit points for ignoring the arrows on the roundabout.

Snr Sgt McReight said too many drivers are “attacking” the roundabouts, entering too fast and forcing other motorists to give way as well as ignoring the arrows, crossing lines on the rounabout.

Hazard reduction burns after rains THE Rural Fire Service (RFS) is pressing ahead with bushfire mitigation activities in Noosa following a recent cold snap and wet weather.

RFS North Coast regional manager Peter Hollier said residents would notice smoke in the air in coming weeks as brigades and landholders conducted hazard reduction burns after a brief rain-induced lull in June.

The activities are part of Operation Cool Burn, which is a multiagency approach to reduce the threat of bushfires and will target areas such as Cooroibah, Doonan, Marcus Beach, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach and Tewantin.

“The RFS has been working proactively with landholders on the Sunshine Coast and in the Wide Bay Burnett regions since April, with more than 180 hazard reduction burns taking place during that time,” Mr Hollier said.

“Recent rainfall and cooler temperatures in the region pushed back some burns, particularly in areas that experienced moderate to high levels of rain. Weather permitting, these burns are scheduled to take place between now and September.”

Mr Hollier said more than 30 localities stretching from the Sun-

shine Coast to Bundaberg, including Noosa, had been identified as priority areas for mitigation activities.

“These areas may pose potential fire hazards during bushfire season, so the RFS has been working with landholders and government agencies to target these hotspots,” he said.

The burns will coincide with a suite of community education initiatives to equip residents with the information they need to prepare themselves and their properties ahead of bushfire season.

“Hazard reduction burns are one component of Operation Cool Burn. The RFS has visited a number of communities since April to discuss steps people can take to prepare for bushfire season,” Mr Hollier said.

“This work is continuing, and a series of street meets and door knocking activities are scheduled for bushfire-prone areas.”

Mr Hollier said it was important that residents removed fire hazards from their properties and developed a bushfire survival plan.

“It is essential for everyone to have a bushfire survival plan to detail how exactly you will prepare and what action you will

take if threatened by a bushfire,” he said.

“A well-prepared home will increase the chance of survival.”

Mr Hollier said the plan should be in writing, practised regularly and take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in the house including children and the elderly.

“Once a bushfire survival plan is in place, it is important for people to know what action to take when a bushfire approaches,” he said.

Mr Hollier said steps included monitoring the media for updates, wearing protective clothing, drinking water and moving loose furniture inside.

“On a severe, extreme or catastrophic fire weather day, the safest option for survival is leave well in advance of any fire,” he said.

“Vulnerable members of the community, including the young and elderly, are advised to leave well before bushfire strikes and not be part of any plan to stay and defend their property.”

Annie Grossman from Annie’s Books Peregian was shortlisted as Bookseller of the Year at the annual Australian Booksellers Association conference held at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Ms Grossmas was among four nominees from across the country, including Christine Gordon of Readings in Melbourne and joint winners Anna Low of Potts Point Bookshop in Sydney and Deb Force of The Sun Bookshop in Melbourne.

Although Ms Grossman didn’t take out the top spot, the local bookseller said he was happy to have been nominated.

“I was overwhelmed with my nomination for Bookseller of the Year; I didn’t win, but I was flattered and very proud to have been nominated, let alone shortlisted,” Ms Grossman said.

“I can’t take all the credit for this - my two friends and co-workers Rachel and Palmira are indispensable, and my customers make it a joy to come to work.”

The prestigious award also attracted national celebrities with actress, comedian and writer Magda Szubanski taking out the top prize in the Booksellers Choice Award category.

‘Bulldog’ would be proud Ron Lane’s

people ON Friday evening 24 June at the annual dinner and presentation of awards for the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, a major announcement and presentation was made. The announcement was that for the first time the Dave O’Donnell Memorial Trophy for the Patrol Captain of the Year was to be presented. The first reciperant of this very prestigious trophy was announced and the award went to Trevor Lansdown.

It is a sad but true fact that in our everyday society we usually wait until a person or group of people are deceased, before we take the time to publicly acknowledge their outstanding contribution to the community or organisation in which they serve. So be it with Dave O’Donnell.

With the creation of this award, kindly donated by family friends Ron Otte and Lenore Grice, it is to be hoped that this lifesavers outstanding contribution to not only the Noosa club, but also to Tourism Noosa will become and remain part of our heritage.

Sadly, Dave, a former captain of the club, passed away in 2013 after a long battle with cancer. It was in 1992 that Dave and wife Debbie joined the club, and after surviving much ragging about being Kiwis, Dave settled down into was to be a very successful career.

Dave was born in Taranaki, New Zealand, in 1952 to parents Jack and Marjory - two people of Irish decent. Born into a farming family of eight, three brothers and five sisters, Dave by the age of 12, was out driving tractors on the family property.

Educated at the New Plymouth High School, Dave quickly made a name for himself as an athlete. As a result of his aggressive and determined attitude to competition he quickly earned the nickname of Bulldog.

On entering the workforce Dave was employed by Shell Oil Refinery as a computer controller working among the big tankers.

Then in 1976 he left to join the Fire Department in Wellington, where he served as a fireman in the highly respected group known as the Blue Watch Team It was back in '69 that Dave met an attractive young lass named Debbie and their friendship blossomed. In the early '60s, Dave had embarked on a career as an amateur boxer and by the time they became a couple he career was established and going well.

“At one time,” said Debbie, “I saw more of him at boxing tournaments than anywhere else.”

With regard to his boxing career the highlight came when 1967 he won the New Zealand Junior Welterweight Championship. Despite finishing the year with seven fights for seven wins, he rejected several offers to turn professional.

When you look at his family background in boxing, Dave's career does not come as a surprise. His father Jack was a life-member of the N.Z. Boxing Council and his brother Peter was

Ron Otte, who donated the award, with widow Debbie O'Donnell and award recipient Trevor Landsdown. also a national champion. On retirement Dave became a boxing coach in the town of Oaukura and such was his success that kids came from all over to train under his expertise.

Then in '89, Dave reluctantly agreed that he and Debbie had eventually seen the light and along with their young son Brendan came to Australia, eventually settling in Noosa. Then in '92 he joined the Noosa Surf Club and for the next 12 years served as a patrolling member.

Dave passed his bronze in '93, and along with other awards, obtained his IRB drivers certificate and eventually his IRB examiners in '98.

It was this area that was to become the strong point of his career. It was on his insistence that examinations for all IRB personal be conducted at open beaches where the trainees would be exposed to big surf; thus ensuring that all that passed were of the highest caliber.

He once remarked: “Examination on open beaches will separate the men from the boys.

This type of rescue work can be dangerous, so our crews have got to be the best”.

Dave also held office as club captain from '97 till 2000, and following this 2000 till 2003 worked as club secretary. During this period he somehow found time to serve as a member of the Supporter Club Board of Directors, '96 until '98.

However the highlights of his career came in 1998 when he was named Sunshine Coast Club Captain of the Year. As if this was not enough, he then backed up in the same year to lead his club in being awarded the coveted

Buhks-Wilks Trophy, as the club of the year for the Sunshine Coast.

To receive one of these awards was a great effort but to be awarded the double was extraordinary. Now 18 years on, this achievement is yet to be repeated in the Noosa club.

Quoting from the Branch Annual Report it stated, “It was because of Dave O’Donnells leadership and drive that Noosa won the BuhksWilks Trophy. Also during his time he introduced and enforced the patrol system known as the Extended Bathing Area. This was a system where by the red and yellow flags were, when sea conditions allowed, placed up to 150 to 200 mts apart not the usual 50”.

One of the reasons for the success of this system was the high standard of the IRB crews.

With Extended Bathing these crews were on permanent patrol moving slowly out behind the bathing area, along the full length of the beach.

On one occasion during this period Noosa was hit with a spot inspection by officials from State Centre, Queensland's governing body.

“This is the best patrolled beach we have seen this season; this is exactly what we are looking for,” the group leader said.

For Dave the timing could have not been better. The state was looking for a better system to upgrade the patrolling and extended bathing was being thoroughly investigated. However this method could only work on selected beaches, a method for which Noosa was ideal.

It had been suggested in some circles that we follow the American system of fully open

beach, but because the Australian public had been raised on the bathing flag areas, this suggestion was quickly discarded.

Then in 2002 after 10 years of continual patrolling and leadership Dave was awarded his Long Service Badge, an award well deserved.

During several discussions that I had with Dave in my capacity as club president, he agreed that the major factor in his success - without a doubt- was his New Zealand upbringing.

First was his life on the farm, where as a young lad he quickly learned to make decisions for himself, then following was his life in the Blue Watch Fire Brigade, plus his sporting career as a champion amateur fighter.

To succeed in these ventures four virtues were essential. First was a tough frame of mind, second an acceptance of strict discipline, third the ability to embrace good team work, and fourth and probably most important of all, club loyalty.

Then in the year 2002, Dave and Debbie shifted to Rainbow Beach where they were involved in successful business ventures. Dave also continued his life saving career by joining the Rainbow Beach Club, where he was eventually elected to the office of club president.

With the ever-increasing number of visitations to Noosa's Main Beach and the outstanding patrol work of our IRB teams, one is constantly reminded of the outstanding contribution made by our past club mate, Dave “Bulldog” O’Donnell.

Far out, man

WITH reference to your story regarding “Fishing debate hits stormy waters” (30 June). Obviously these storms could have obscured the reality of the real situation on the Noosa North Shore. I was staying on the North Shore at a friend’s property on 21-24 June. Because I surf I was at the beach very early around 6.30am during these dates. At no time did I hear any firearms being used or excessive noise or anything which could be described as “lawless behaviour”. In fact I witnessed the mullet fishermen picking up heaps of rubbish left by the tourists of Noosa which was washed out from the river and deposited on the North Shore, after the recent heavy rains.

Lucy Stanton, who seems so concerned about the degradation of this environment, misses the obvious. Far more pollution is generated by tourists than the maligned fishermen on the North Shore.

I’m not affiliated with the these fishermen at all, I’m just someone who has lived here in Noosa for the past 30 years and has seen the difference between what tourism pressure has done to the environment compared to the impact of the fishermen who have operated here for so many years, yet for such a short time each year. My only concern here is that the story is factual rather than one which is politically advantageous.

THE most enlightening news on my TV coming out of the UK at the moment is seeing all the Wimbledon tennis players in the traditional whites. Admittedly some of the outfits worn at other tournaments are the vision of the player who also has a second career as a fashion designer. But I find it more entertaining to be able to watch the players’ skill than to have your eyes averted by a rainbow of colours and way out styles.

View from the north ALWAYS enjoyed Phil’s page even when he was on Sydney’s northern beaches, but he was off the mark with Brexit (30 June). If one takes Scotland and Ireland out of the vote, the leave vote percentage wise would have been much

higher. The only parts of England complaining now about the exit are those around the London area. Where I came from in the north/midlands the EU has turned my great homeland into a third world country. Phil was only there five minutes and lived in London; he should have lived and worked up north then he would understand the real problem.

I came here in 1970 but I wasn’t surprised by the exit vote at all, in fact I would have been very disappointed had they chosen to remain.

Hopefully now England can get back to eating Australian beef and NZ lamb and lots of Aussie fruit and not all the other rubbish that has been forced on it over the last 40 years.

Good luck, humans AFTER a long period having to put up with screeching humans trying to move us away from our campsites in Wallace Estate among the melaleuca paperbark native trees, we the greys, reds and other bats have had enough and moved away across the Noosa River to the North Shore. The trees there have regenerated enough for us to commence living there once again.

We are sorry the humans had to put up with us trying to live our normal lives in the small

cramped ghetto-like area we called home, but finding adequate places for our families, friends and relatives is becoming more and more difficult as humans take away more and more of our habitat. And when they do plant trees around their houses, very often they are not what we can survive on for food or living.

We know the trees in Wallace Estate were defoliated due to the large number of us congregating there, but in time the trees will naturally regenerate.

The human, K.L. Fielden suggested the existing trees be removed and planted with “gums and pine trees”. She does not understand that all species of “gum” trees produce flowers at various times of the year. Furthermore there is a suggestion that koalas, kangaroos and wallabies will return to Wallace Estate, but it is no longer possible, as the area is surrounded by human habitation, houses, roads and dogs.

Our thanks go to the Noosa Council for understanding that we do move around areas that are conducive to our way of life. Please understand that we try and provide a service to you humans by pollinating native and commercial trees for yours and our foods and even eating mosquitos and other bugs that annoy you.

Once the trees in Wallace Estate have recovered, maybe we will be back, unless you find other places for us to live our lives in peace and harmony with our friends.

Three year supply of funds A WIDE range of community groups are set for a cash boost in the first round of Noosa Council’s new Community Alliance Grants.

At its June Ordinary Meeting, council approved $133,500 of Community Alliance Grants as part of the revamped Community Grants Program.

Noosa Community Radio, disability support service Sunshine Butterflies, Noosa and District Landcare, and Noosa Integrated Catchment Association are among the 15 community organisations to receive a funding commitment that will run over three years.

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the new three-year Community Alliance Grants gave greater certainty to select organisation whose

ongoing work deserves support. “(The grants) relieve the groups from having to fill in application forms every year, and of course that also means less work for council staff. These longer funding arrangements are a great initiative,” he said.

Funds from this round will also support the good work of Cooroy Family Support Centre, which provides domestic and family violence support services.

The creative industries also get a look-in with $7500 in funding going to both Noosa Arts Theatre and Pomona Arts Inc. Other recipients to receive the recurrent grants include Cooroora Historical Society Inc who will receive $5000, the Shine Program that supports women and children flee-

New lease on life for pool THE Tewantin Pool is open again with local business Cowan Taylor Aquatics confirming on Monday 4 July they have taken over the lease.

In May, Tewantin State School principal Corrie Conners said the operating costs of the pool weren’t being met, and opened the pool lease for tender.

Business owners Andrew Cowan and Georgina Taylor are currently running the Cooroy (NDSHS) Pool and have expanded their business to include the Tewantin Pool.

“We have so much to offer the local community and are excited to get started,” they said.

“When Tewantin came up, we thought what a great opportunity for us to expand.”

Andrew and Georgina will be offering Learn to Swim, Squads, Adult Squads, Aqua Aerobics, General Lap and recreation use at the pool.

“In all of the programs we offer, Cowan Taylor Aquatics caters for all ages and abilities. We love to see the parents getting involved in swimming as much as the kids,” they said.

“Our Aqua Aerobics and squads have already begun, so come on down and meet the team.”

Over the holidays, the Tewantin Pool will be open from 3pm to 6pm Monday to Friday and 5.30am to 9am

Invitation to hack into the government NOOSA Council is again calling on local ‘hackers’ to join GovHack for a chance to win a share of more than $3000 in prize money up for grabs in 2016.

GovHack teams use public or ‘open source’ government data such as maps, statistics and other information sets, to produce innovative digital products and services that benefit the community.

Noosa Council senior economic development officer Carolyn Bullen said the council was thrilled to again sponsor GovHack, which will this year take place simultaneously in 39 locations across Australia and New Zealand on the weekend of 30 July.

“Teams taking part at last year’s Sunshine Coast event, held at Peregian Beach, produced some fantastic apps using local government data including Dogs Unleashed - a location-based app that uses park and beach access point data to direct local and visiting dog owners to local on and off-leash dog exercise areas,” Ms Bullen said.

“This year’s Sunshine Coast theme is ‘open for business’ and the judges’ focus will be on collaboration, com-

Canoe makes splash at Noosa gallery AN outrigger canoe illustrated with intricately hand-painted Indigenous art will make a splash at Noosa Regional Gallery this July in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Nandjimadji Art Group, a collective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living with a disability, produced the impressive piece.

Meaning “to lighten the load”, Nandjimadji artists meet regularly on the Sunshine Coast to paint, create and yarn together.

Gallery director Nina Shadforth said she was excited about the project.

“I am excited about the brightly painted outrigger canoe coming to the gallery, as it is not every day that you see sport and art combined in the same space, let alone as a collaborative project,” she said.

The canoe will feature among

some of the group’s other works, alongside a solo show of paintings by local Indigenous artist Hope O’Chin.

There will also be a small group exhibition of traditional paintings by artists in the Red Desert Gatherings Art Group, from Alice Springs (established by Steps Group Australia).

Ms Shadforth said the gallery would host an artist talk with Hope O’Chin as part of the Gallery’s Coffee and Conversation series, on Wednesday 27 July, at 11am.

The official opening for these exhibitions will be held on Friday 1 July, at 6pm, at the Noosa Regional Gallery, Tewantin, and is free and open to the public.

Works will be on show until Sunday 21 August, with free entry to the gallery.

BRIEFLY Register for rates switch TIME is running out for anyone who wants to switch to paperless billing for their rates notice as Noosa Council urges residents to register by tomorrow, 8 July.

The council’s corporate services director Michael Shave said receiving rates notices by email was not only convenient but better for the environment because it reduced paper use.

“It’s a simple process - fill out the online form, specifying the property or properties you own and the email address to be used,” Mr Shave said.

Ratepayers who make the switch by 8 July will receive their mid-year notice by email. Those who sign-up after this date will receive their first paperless rates notice in January 2017.

Mr Shave said more and more people prefer to receive their bills in digital format these days to avoid the need to keep hard copy documents.

“Council is pleased to assist ratepayers who wish to go paperless. It also helps council to minimise postage costs associated with mailing notices to ratepayers,” he said.

“By registering for emailed rates notices you’ll not only enjoy the convenience of receiving your rate notice electronically but you’ll be helping the environment.”

Sand pumping put on hold SAND pumping on Noosa Main Beach to repair the damage from the 3 June storm has been put on hold for the school holidays.

Noosa Council released a statement that said the restoration of Main Beach was progressing well with more than 10,000 cubic metres of sand pumped back onto the beach.

Pumping will now be temporarily shut-down for the school holidays, with work planned to resume on 11 July.

Noosa Council technical officer David Shing said despite the volume of sand lost, the beach profile is “very good” which means the team can stop pumping for the holidays.

“The downtime will allow us to carry out some much needed maintenance on the sand shifter, which has moved thousands of tonnes of sand since early June,” he said.

“We’ll be keeping an eye on the beach over the holidays and, if need be, we will carry out some grooming to improve the beach profile during low tides.”

Festive fun at gruelling mountain race THE countdown is on for the 38th annual King of the Mountain race, with strong crowd numbers expected for the 24 July event.

Known as one of Australia’s most gruelling and historic mountain races, the Pomona KOM festival is one of the Noosa hinterland’s most popular community events.

No drinks but water for 16 kids

By JOLENE OGLE DESPITE the lure of soft drink at class parties and slushies at the movies, 16 local students have drunk nothing but water for the month of June to raise funds for international water sanitation projects.

The children all attend the Cooroy Outside School Hours Care, and it was Paige Foley, 13, who encouraged her friends to take up the Water Aid cause after watching carer Lisa Hill and friend Ayden Foley complete the challenge last year.

year,” Paige said. “It seemed pretty easy! I will definitely do it next year.”

The 16 students, named the Water Aiders, are aged between 8 and 13 and set a fund-raising goal of $500, which they not only met but exceeded by a whopping $600.

Carer Lisa Hill, who hadn’t planned on doing the challenge again this year, said she was proud of the students who went without their favourite drinks for the whole month.

“The whole thing was organised by the kids this year, we just supported and helped when needed,” she said.

Lisa said the students even gave

up their weekly Milo and orange juice drinks at the school’s Chappy Breakfast.

Ayden, 11, tackled the challenge for the second year in a row, and said he enjoyed raising the money for people in need.

“I do it for people with no water.

It’s good to raise money for them,” he said.

As the challenge drew to a close for another year, the students knew exactly what they would have as their first special drink on 1 July.

“I’m having two bottles of ginger beer,” said Water Aider Erik Mahe.

THE Cooroy Kindness Club has been out sharing the love again these school holidays, paying a special visit to the residents of the Noosa Nursing Centre.

Led by carer Lisa Hill from Cooroy Outside School Hours Care, the group of students practised old-time songs such as Give Me A Home Among the Gumtrees to sing to the residents.

The club members also shared

morning tea with the residents.

Kindness Club member Erik Mahe, 11, said the visit to the nursing centre was a lot of fun.

“It was nice for the (residents) to have visitors and it was fun to sing,” he said. “The food was also good.”

The Kindness Club meets regularly to discuss ways of spreading kindness throughout the local community.

Kin Kin gets connected AFTER years of no mobile phone reception, Kin Kin residents and tourists can finally stay connected with the service switched on for the first time on Thursday 30 June.

Local resident Anita Poteri said it was “very strange” to finally have mobile phone reception.

“I was doing the working bee at Kin Kin State School on Saturday and my mobile rang twice; very weird,” she said.

“My son’s mate just rang me to say he is at the Kin Kin Shop and he just wanted to call someone as I’ve never been able to call in Kin

Kin before. Very funny!”

Anita said she saw lots of tourists at the Kin Kin General Store making the most of the new service.

“The good things were no tourists asked for directions as their GPS worked and people were tagging madly that they were in Kin Kin so for PR for our town it’s a positive,” she said.

“All the small businesses, entrepreneurs and real estate agents are very excited about this to be able to take their businesses to the next level.”

Buyers learning to vote with their feet CORE Logic RP Data has released the latest auction clearance results showing an upward shift compared to last week.

Preliminary results show 70.7 per cent of capital city auctions were successful, a higher rate than what was recorded over the first month of winter this year (67.1 per cent).

The number of residential

auctions held this week was 811, down substantially from 2218 last week. At the same time last year, 1674 capital city auctions were held with 76.8 per cent clearing.

As expected, Sydney was the strongest performing market with an 80.4 per cent clearance rate of the 215 reported results clearing. With last week posting as the busiest week

in over a month, Brisbane’s auction volumes fell from 175 to 66 this week.

Preliminary results shows 38.6 per cent of auctions were successful, down from 41.8 per sent over the previous week.

For the Gold Coast, there were 42 auctions held with a clearance rate of 41.2 per cent. No data was presented for the Sunshine Coast region.

The capital cities have recorded healthy auction clearance rates for the week, according to Core Logic RP Data.

One-act play underway THE curtains have been raised for the 39th annual One-Act Play Festival as three plays go head to head to take out top spot in the long-standing competition.

With nearly 70 entries from across Australia, New Zealand, USA and Papua New Guinea, three playwrights have been chosen to premiere their work in the competition which takes place over the Noosa Long Weekend.

The prestigious competition offers an $8000 cash prize pool, including the Nimmo Prize of $5000, generously donated by Dr and Mrs Nimmo of Noosa.

The three plays showcased the best playwrights and top local actors including Noosa’s own deputy mayor Frank Wilkie who portrays a dangerous thug in Richard Harris’ Dead Loss.

Crispy change for winter BUTTERMILK fried chicken with spicy corn and a crunchy coleslaw is an American classic that’s perfect to warm you up on a winter’s day.

Ingredients

· 600ml buttermilk. · 2 tbsp sea salt. · 2 tbsp Tabasco sauce. free-range chicken thighs or · 8drumsticks, skin-on. · 400g plain flour. · 2 tsp cayenne pepper. · 4 tsp mustard powder. · 2 tbsp celery salt. large free-range eggs, · 4beaten. litres sunflower or · 2groundnut oil for deep-frying, · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

plus extra for oiling for the lime and chilli corn.

4 sweetcorn cobs, blanched for two minutes in boiling water, then drained.

50g butter.

Finely grated zest and juice of a lime.

Pinch of chilli flakes.

For the slaw 1/4 red cabbage, very finely sliced.

2 large carrots, shredded.

1/2 red onion, very finely sliced.

1/2 fennel bulb, shredded.

2 tsp mayonnaise.

2 tbsp soured cream.

1 tbsp Dijon mustard.

1 tsp caster sugar.

Method 1. Mix the buttermilk, salt and Tabasco in a large, non-metallic bowl. Add the chicken pieces - make sure they’re completely coated, cover with cling film and marinate in the fridge for at least two hours or up to overnight.

2. Take the marinated chicken out of the buttermilk and shake off any excess liquid.

Mix the flour, cayenne, mustard powder and celery salt in a bowl, season well and toss the chicken in it. Dip them one by one in the beaten eggs, then back into the flour, and shake off any excess.

3. Half-fill a deep saute pan with the oil and heat until it reaches 160 degrees Celsius. Deep-fry the chicken in batches for 8-10 minutes until golden and crisp. Keep warm in a low oven while you cook the rest.

4. Mix together all the ingredients for the slaw, then taste and season. Set aside. Heat a griddle pan until very hot, oil the corn cobs and cook on the griddle for 5-8 minutes until lightly charred. Halve, then dot with the butter, squeeze over the lime juice and sprinkle with the zest, chilli flakes and plenty of sea salt. Serve the chicken with the slaw and corn.

Monday 31 October is the deadline for tax returns this year, but if you use an accountant you can often delay this until the following year. Conversely, if you’re due a tax refund, file asap and earn at least three months’ worth of additional interest on that money 4. To ensure you get more bang for your buck from the tax man, check out these top tips to maximise your tax return this year.

1. Check you are making all the workrelated deductions relevant to your profession. Most people are aware that you can claim deductions for home office expenses, work-related travel and professional memberships.

But did you know, for example, that people who work outside may be able to claim for their sunglasses and sunscreen.

The ATO is very specific about what you can and cannot claim and its website has more than 40 guides to “deductions for specific industries and occupations”, including in the less exotic fields of airline workers, factory workers, builders, cleaners, hairdressers, nurses, police, teachers, IT professionals.

2. Avoid being audited by the Tax Office by carefully considering how you claim your use of electronic devices this year.

The ATO is on the rampage, having noticed a big increase in people claiming deductions for smartphones, internet, computers and other devices.

Remember, you can only claim the proportion of your use of these devices that is work-related. You need to keep records so that if you are audited, you can produce evidence for work use. You’ll need phone records or a four-week diary detailing your work use of the equipment.

These can all be symptoms of depression or anxiety

and can be treated successfully by a health professional,� she said. “We know these conditions are common and we encourage everyone to pay just as much attention to maintaining good mental health as they do to remaining physically healthy. “It’s not a sign of weakness to seek help and older people shouldn’t feel they have to put up with doing it tough. “Life starts at 60. Answers needed for super certainty THE Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) has expressed its anger and concern at changes to superannuation announced in the 2016/17 Federal Budget.

AIR executive officer Sue Hart said people in this position were extremely concerned and angry at a number of the changes to superannuation announced. “The superannuation changes have again eroded the principle of stability and certainty and affect plans retirees have already made over many years,� she said. “The long-held principle of grandfathering superannuation changes to protect those who are in or are approaching retirement has been completely destroyed by the 2016 budget measures. To claim the budget measures are not retrospective is simply playing with semantics.�

AIR is calling on all political parties and candidates to strongly support the implementation of firm, unambiguous policy on superannuation and put an end to the continual change which Ms Hart said created an environment of fear and uncertainty for retirees.

Ms Hart said neither the current government nor the Opposition were without fault in this area and were increasingly seen to be “incapable� of reaching a bi-partisan agreement on superannuation and retirement incomes policy. “Successive federal governments have committed to encour-

age and support those who selffund their retirement. However, in practice governments have consistently failed to adequately support those in the retirement/drawdown pension phase by restricting benefits or not providing the support they have committed to,� she said. “Whatever the outcome of the election, it is imperative that the elected government undertakes a complete and holistic review of Australia’s taxation and retirement income system and legislates measures that will not be open to change at the whim of every future Treasurer trying to balance a budget.�

Sausage sizzle for soccer snag break

By JULES ROSENKRANZ THIS week while the Noosa Eagles Soccer Club players took a break from their soccer games, the parents stepped up to run a fund-raising barbecue at Bunnings Noosa.

The day started out fresh and soon warmed up as the first sausages hit the hot plate.

The sound of the sizzle

“tssss” and the aroma of the onions attracted loads of people as a wonderful bunch of volunteers sacrificed their time to raise some muchneeded money for the Noosa Eagles Soccer Club.

All in all, the day was a great success raising over $850 with a massive thank you to our local community if you were one of the wonder-

ful people who indulged in a sausage or drink, also thank you to our volunteers and, of course, to Bunnings Noosa who allowed us to be there.

It was a truly successful day and lots of fun for all involved. Great work to the Noosa Eagles Soccer Club parents who helped on the day.

I couldn’t help feel a little sorry for runner-up Joan Duru of France though. A dozen years ago Gary “Kong” Elkerton and I carted Joan all over Europe to compete in pro junior events with the rest of our Quiksilver grom team. While perhaps not the most naturally talented, he was always the most gracious of the groms. And he always retained his French composure when Gary would tell him, “Get a bit more mongrel into ya!” I guess the advice still applies, but it looks like he’s ripping here.

Here’s to Billy Wallace!

THE godfather of surfing in Noosa turns 90 very soon, but Billy Wallace is going to be celebrating in a new home at Ozcare Noosa Junction, following a nasty incident involving the ingestion of an amalgam tooth filling.

The episode rendered Bill a little bit weak and needy, so he’s finally decided to put his feet up and take it easy in care.

And, as it happens, he’ll be within cooee of old mate and surfboard industry colleague Ray “The Admiral” McKeon, also having a well-earned rest, so they’ll have plenty of time for a chin-wag.

It’s been more than 40 years since Bill pulled up stumps in Sydney’s Brookvale, where he’d been one of the famed “Brookvale Six” pioneers of the surfboard industry, and brought his craftsmanship to Noosa.

For many years he plied his craft in Noosaville, and then in retirement made a spectacular re-emergence as a wood surfboard craftsman, making replicas of his creations from the 1940s and ’50s.

I’ve been a mate of Bill’s since the ’70s, so it’s given me a great sense of pride and satisfaction to have worked with Shaun Cairns, of Tewantin’s Panga Productions, over the past year to produce a documentary film that celebrates and honours the true pioneers of the modern surfboard industry – Bill Wallace, Gordon Woods, Scott Dillon, Barry Bennett, Denny Keogh and Greg McDonagh.

Now that film is almost complete and will be screened on Foxtel’s History Channel over the summer.

The old boys are still all with us,

but they’re getting fragile, and it was wonderful to be able to screen an early cut of “The Men of Wood and Foam” for them at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in March.

Now the film really does them proud, and I hope Billy and all of the others are able to attend the premiere in December.

I REFRAINED from commenting on the Federal Election before the poll because I figured you would be getting those opinions elsewhere – and how! But now that everyone who cares has juggled that humongous Senate form and cast a vote as best they can, may I offer the opinion that we seem to have created the most ridiculous form of democracy seen since Federation.

As I write (on Sunday night) it appears Malcolm Turnbull’s LNP coalition will probably be able to govern in a minority with the assistance of pledges to support supply from a few people that we didn’t elect to have a casting vote, and whose policies we probably don’t like. True, we are not virgins in the matter of hung parliaments, but this one looks even worse than the last.

Not a great result for the Libs, but by the time you read this, the tide may have turned enough for them to govern in their own right.

However, across both houses in last weekend’s double dissolution election, we have seen a substantial increase in the vote for people who cannot directly influence policy, who

colleague and friend, but the “Human Headline” claims to have never voted in his life, so I’m afraid I don’t see why he should tip the balance on my vote or yours.

Pirates pull off do or die battle

There will be certainly no love lost between these two fierce rivals, so pack your picnic hamper, throw in a blanket and an odd beverage and head up the highway to witness what could be the turning point for both sides this season.

The U18s are in the middle of a well-earned break, but special thanks to Jake Bullen who played with the Big Boys against Nambour and acquitted himself very nicely.

The Pirates were victorious on the weekend, claiming their spot in the top 8.

LAST Saturday saw The Noosa Pirates travel south to take on long-time rivals Nambour in another match-of-the-day situation.

Both sides needed to win to stay in finals contention, and it showed with no “beg your pardons” throughout the game.

Nambour started well and raced to an 8-0 lead after just nine minutes of play, but the Pirates didn’t bow down to the pressure and some good lead-up work was rewarded when the “Raging Pom” Alex Clare scored in the 15th minute.

With goal kicker Lauchie Gladman’s radar firing on all cylinders, the Pirates bridged the gap to just two points. When big forward

Jon Broad crashed over the try line in the 21st minute, harmony appeared to be restored for the Pirates and they went into the long break leading 12-8. The second half didn’t disappoint the hardy supporters that travelled to watch the game. Nambour hit back hard and led 14-12 with 30 minutes to play.

Both sides threatened to score, yet defences stood resilient until fullback Aaron Locke calmly picked the ball up on his own 10 metre line and sprinted 90 metres to score under the posts. Lauchie Gladman converted to give The Pirates an 18-14 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Coming off a magnificent pressure-based victory over Caloundra at home the previous week the Tigers looked, for the most part, flat while their opponents were certainly up and about in their 28 point victory.

Their attack on the footy continues to impress the Tiger faithful each week and their consistency of performance is impressive also.

After Thursday night we had nine changes in the ressies. Six were away with work or holidays or sick and three went up into senior side.

I ask our group for effort and pushed our team structures and our style of play. We started the game with only 20 players, me and Crossy on the bench.

It was a real arm wrestle but the feeling out there was very positive.

We came out after half time and “wowee” our pressure and our blokes went through the roof. We were all starting to have fun! Our captain for the day, Scotty “PI Magnum” was killing it at full back while JMan in the midfield was hard at the ball all day.

Fishing families about

By JACK MANGROVE WITH the outstanding winter weather we have been seeing over the last couple of weeks, families have been out in force on the Noosa River. Bream have been the mainstay of mist junior anglers and the river is full of winter bream at the moment.

At the Fishing Gympie Terrace, kids have been getting nice fish on mullet, prawns, worms and cut pilchard baits. They are also seeing some quality flathead and trevally. Munna Point has also been a hot spot and some quality fish have come from the hole just in front off the Coast Guard Station.

Down towards the mouth the Dog Beach and the Frying Pan have also been fishing well for whiting and bream. Tailor and trevally have been in good numbers in the same area with the top of the tide the best time to plan your attack.

Luderick are also in good numbers around the River Mouth Car Park rocks, Coolum cabbage under a float has been getting the best results with some quality fish up to a kilo changelings anglers. The deeper holes upriver have been another spot that has been attracting anglers with some nice jew on offer. Paddle vibes have been the go to lures with the Thumper Tails from Samaki a favourite of mine.

Heading offshore, anglers have again been spoilt for choice with a lot of quality fish taken on the closer reefs.

Mackerel are still on offer with some larger Spanish and spotted mackerel still hanging around. This has to be put down to water temperatures still sitting around the 22- 23 degree mark.

The bay and jew shoals have produced some nice fish with snapper and tuna on offer. Chardon’s Reef has fished well for snapper, pearlies, moses, gold band snapper, tuskies, flat bream, gold spot cod and a solid bluefin tuna.

Fishing North Reef over the last week has also paid off with good numbers

Kaler and Saul Eaton with a couple of flathead and a bream. of pearlies, moses, teraglin jewfish and squire. For anglers with bigger craft making the run up to the reef off Double Island Point has also paid off with solid snapper up to 4kg, gold spot wrasse, hussar, moses, tuskies and pearl perch.

The beach has also been a great place to take the family with a lot of people making the run up the Noosa

North Shore either camping or day tripping. Tailor has been on most anglers' minds and they have not been disappointed, good schools of fish have been reported making the run up the coast with the deeper gutter and a run in tide the best options.

Bream dart and jew have also been on offer with the area north of Teewah fishing well. South of the Noosa River,

reports of good jew have come from Sunshine Beach with the night tide the best time. Off the rock in the Noosa National Park snapper have been reported as well as sweetlip and some larger tailor.

Thundercats in action THUNDERCATS are set to take over Coolum Beach this weekend as the fourth annual King of Coolum kicks off.

Coolum Beach is set to host the event, welcoming the nation’s top Thundercat crews in an epic battle to secure the prestigious title win.

The high-speed surf racing event will be held over two days with a predicted two to four metre swell promising plenty of spectator thrills and spills.

Coolum Business and Tourism As-

sociation president Malcolm Chilman said the event had become Australia’s premier Thundercat event and continued to attract the highest-ranking Thundercat pilots and co-pilots to Coolum’s challenging beach break as they put their skills to the ultimate test.

“We are very excited to have the Thundercats back in Coolum. They always put on a spectacular show with their high speeds and aerials,” Mr Chilman said.

“The timing of the event coincides with school holidays which

gives our tourists and locals something interesting to do, and another reason to visit Coolum.

“We’re hoping for great weather and maybe a bit of swell as well to make things interesting.”

Thundercat racing is a high-speed extreme water sport, featuring 4.1 metre-long inflatable catamaranstyle surf boats that can reach speeds of up to 90km/h and jump up to six metres in the air, providing plenty of thrilling action for spectators.

Jacob Gaby and Rob Van der Westhuizen racing in separate crews this year and the usual representation from New Zealand missing, Brisbane Coast Thundercats president and race director John Kerrisk said the 2016 title was well and truly up for grabs.

“It’s going to be an interesting weekend to say the least. Unfortunately, we won’t have any official Kiwi crews racing due to illness, but there’s a couple of ring-ins scattered through the Aussie competitors that will be flying the NZ flag,” he said.

“We’ve got several newly qualified crews racing at Coolum for the first time this weekend and, with the large swell predicted, they’ll certainly be put to the test.

The free King of Coolum event will be held in front of Coolum Beach Surf Club between 9am and 2pm on Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July, with boats competing across both A and B Grade divisions. It’s free, adrenalin-fuelled fun for all to watch and a perfect ending to the school holiday period.

Two local black hole stars shine bright at awards LAST weekend, members of the Rescue Water Craft section (Jet Skis, Jet Boats IRBs) met to celebrate the end of season and present awards.

Proud to say that two of our people, Chris Vaughan area 18 and Roger Aspinall area 19, operating out of Noosa, both received awards as operators of the year.

The main objectives of these patrols are to cover what is referred to by the crews as black holes. These are the regions that are not covered by lifeguards and lifesavers. They exist within the boundaries of districts such as North Shore to Sunshine area 19, and Noosa to Peregian, area 18.

It should not go unnoticed by the general public that both men performed 140 hours of patrols in their areas as well as 100 hours plus as normal beach patrolmen; giving noosatoday.com.au

Another strong point regarding these crews is that despite the fact they work out of Noosa they are made up of lifesavers from different clubs such as Noosa Sunshine and Redcliffe; clubbies uniting in teamwork-what lifesaving is all about.

These men and their patrol mates are the backbone of our organisation.

The annual general meeting of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club has been held, and for the

year ahead the two major positions of president and club captain are as of last season; Craig Law president and Scott Summers captain.

Other major appointments are deputy president Brian O’Conner, secretary Michael Smallman and Junior Activities chairperson Heather Mackay.

"The meeting was well attended, and I think that overall it has set the tone for the year ahead, said president Craig Law. "To all office bearers,” he said, “who have taken on responsibilities with their new positions, we wish them well and thank them for doing so.”

This weekend the State Pool Rescue Championships will be conducted on the Gold Coast and for this

Sunshine will be sending a team of 20 contestants.

Last weekend, in keeping with their policy of planning for the future, Noosas Youth Development officer Carolyn Lansdown, took a team of six youth members for a team bonding trip to Byron Bay. Billeted together at the Arts Factory Youth Hostel and going from Friday through to Sunday, the trip was seen as a success. “If we are to continue our successes of the last couple of seasons, we must keep up with our training sessions and bonding trips away,” said Carolyn. “This helps to create a feeling of harmony and this is vital for our future.”

Following this, last Wednesday at the Noosa club a Youth Development meeting was held for the members to organise a plan to cover all aspects of

their role in the season ahead.

Also during the week a team of 15 recruits continued their training for their SRC and bronze medallion. Regarding the State Pool Titles, Noosa will be represented by a small team of two.

We wish both Sunshine and Noosa good luck at the pool titles.

Continuing on from their success at the Australian titles where they won a silver medal, the boat section aims to form ladies open and under 23 crews; also an under 19 mens.
