Curlewis course growing strong IT’S official - Curlewis is the fastest growing golf club in the country. With more than 110 new members flocking to sign up since July last year, Curlewis Golf Club, the ‘emerald’ of The Bellarine is firing on all cylinders and leaving others in its wake. An ongoing suite of initiatives, innovations and improvements has seen Curlewis cement its status as the fastest growing club in Australia. It’s a stunning result for the local area. The course itself has recently catapulted up 10 places to a ranking of 78 in Australia’s Top 100 Courses. The much-loved Curlewis course itself is seductive yet deceptively challenging. Watered year-round via an onsite, state-of-the-art water reclamation plant, the large and true greens with undulating sand belt-like fairways are known to lull players into a false sense of security yet no one in their right mind should take Curlewis for granted. This
72 par, links-style playground commands respect and can take down even the most seasoned of golfers. Curlewis Club manager Brenden Caligari said one of the appeals of the club was its affordable membership fees and the in-house PGA pro Steve Brodie. “Both Steve and the Curlewis Pro-Shop team welcomes players of all standards. A passionate, talented pennant cohort as well as an innovative Junior Development Program completes the membership picture here,” Mr Caligari said. The introduction of GolfBoards - a very cool fusion between a golf cart, snowboard and Segway - has been an exciting addition for members and public access players alike. “GolfBoards are a unique, fun addition to a classic golf round, and Curlewis is one of the first golf clubs in Australia to have secured these hip transporters,” Mr Caligari said. The totally refurbished clubhouse was also a draw with punters.
Tom Jefferies (trainee professional), Steve Brodie (PGA Professional Club Pro), Rebecca Knight (hospitality manager) and Tara Thyer (head chef) are just some of the team that has made Curlewis a frontrunner in the state. 156191
Cops catching on By LUKE VOOGT CRIME statistics released for Drysdale last month have revealed a crime spike co-inciding with the partial closure of Drysdale Police Station in 2014. Offences recorded by Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) Victoria show overall crime has increased by 39 per cent from April 2011 to March 2016. But by-far the biggest spike, 21 per cent, occurred from April 2014 to March 2015. In August 2014, the then Coalition State Gov-
ernment reduced the operating hours of Drysdale Police Station to three days a week. Drysdale Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Leanne Stratford has been campaigning for CCTV in High Street for two years, but said nothing could replace police. “(The statistics) are proof to show we have a lack of police in the area.” In the 2014 election Bellarine MP Lisa Neville pledged extra police for the Peninsula. Ms Neville said the previous government not
only closed police stations, but also saw Bellarine police being rostered into Geelong. Last December, the Andrews government increased Drysdale Police Station’s operating hours to 9am to 3pm, seven days a week. Co-incidently, crime fell six per cent this year with 421 offences by March, compared 450 committed the year prior to March 2015. “It’s clear that by putting more police on the beat across the Bellarine Peninsula, and extending the opening hours of local police stations,
crime is falling,” Ms Neville said. However, Ms Stratford put this down to greater community awareness. “There’s no use putting one policeman at the station,” she said. “People are just being more careful protecting their property and looking out for each other.” Ms Neville said Victoria Police was adjusting counter service arrangements for Bellarine stations to get more police out in the community.
